By Daniel McKenzie Cuba – with its vibrant rhythms, varied landscape, and rich heritage of literature and dance – wins over many travellers, who return again and again. A Cuba trip provides an opportunity to explore this uniquely beautiful and captivating land and meet its friendly and open people.

Cuba, MY THIRD TRIP

I just returned from Varadero in Cuba, last week.

It was my third trip to Cuba. It may sound funny but this year I came back with a feeling that I might not see the beauty of Cuba again. The country is changing—the evidence of capitalism is everywhere.

Cubans will soon enjoy the accumulation of wealth and the spending that goes with it. And while this will change the Cuba I have come to know, I have no right to criticize this change. I am lucky to have a Canadian standard of living, while Cubans commonly live with shortages of many everyday items.

Towels, tooth paste and brushes, vitamins, paper, stationery, soap, cosmetics, even daily bread – everything is in short supply. Internet access is extremely limited; only a very select few can go online, but with only email access. Cubans cannot surf the internet.

For example, on the Yahoo site, only the email page is available. All other pages are blocked.

I was told that some people have computers, though older generation PCs (Celeron or Pentium 4 processors are the most advanced ones there. Can you believe that?). Still, they are enjoying downloaded dramas, music, and movies. YES, Cuba is changing. And the Cuban government can do little to stop it, I believe.

People in Cuba are complaining against the Cuban government. The people are now experiencing the inequality in the gap between the few rich and the many poor. This will become a serious social issue, we all know that.

But yet I see Cuba as a country of warm hearted people, clean water, historic architecture, rich culture, intoxicating rhythms and miles of sandy beaches. And most of all, Cuba is an affordable destination, especially with all inclusive hotel packages. I strongly recommend you to visit Cuba, because in Canada you can find excellent Cuban Tour Packages. Here are some tips for you.

1. Tour package information can be obtained from major travel agents or by visiting the following websites. You can get last minute discounts of 15 to 49% from regular rates, though you need to do a bit more work for that.

5. Currency: The Cuban convertible peso (CUC) is the official currency that travellers use while visiting Cuba. CUC’s can only be exchanged within the country—at an airport or at a kiosk conveniently located in most hotels and resorts. But (IMPORTANT!) I was told there is a rumour that the Cuban government may execute currency reform. Be sure to exchange CUC into Canadian currency when you leave Cuba. o

The VSO’s Inaugural Pacific Rim Festival celebrates music and artists of Korea The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra celebrates the cultures of the Pacific Rim in a new, annual festival beginning this February, and the second evening is a celebration of Korean culture and artists, featuring superstar Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang, internationally-renowned Korean soprano Youngmi Kim, and Vancouver’s own Zion Mission Choir directed by Stephanie Chung, on Sunday, February 9, 7:30pm, at the Orpheum Theatre.

Sarah Chang is recognized as one of the world’s great violinists. Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 8 she has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists internationally in a career spanning more than two decades. She will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the VSO. Conducted by Gordon Gerrard, the evening features composer Grace Jong Eun Lee performing her own composition, Song of Love for Kayagum and Orchestra. Her compositions reflect a combination of Korean, Chinese and Western instruments, and in this piece she will play the Kayagum.

Renowned soprano Youngmi Kim (known as “the Maria Callas of the east� for exceptional talent) will perform Verdi’s Pace, pace, mio Dio! from La Forza del Destino and De Curtis’s Non ti scordar di me.

She will then be joined by other vocalists, as well as Vancouver’s own Zion Mission Choir, for Korean Folk Songs including Long for Mountain Gum-Kang.

Vancouver Opera is pleased to announce a new composer for its latest commissioned opera, Stickboy. Neil Weisensel will create the music for this original work, based on the bullying experiences of internationally-recognized Canadian spoken word poet Shane Koyczan. Neil Weisensel is one of the most frequently-performed and prolific opera composers in Canada. His six operas (Gisela in her Bathtub, City Workers in Love, The Bachelor Farmers of the Apocalypse, Merry Christmas Stephen Leacock, The Master’s Stroke and Secret Service) have together seen 115 performances across Canada. He has also composed and arranged music for feature films, stage works, documentaries, and animation.

Events and activities across Canada support Holocaust remembrance, research and education Ottawa, January 23, 2014 — Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) are launching new innovative learning tools to help educators promote Holocaust remembrance and education. Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, made the announcement today as Canada and the world prepare to recognize International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, is an important occasion to remember the unique horror of the Holocaust and pay tribute to its victims.

To help educators learn new approaches to teaching the Holocaust, the NFB, in partnership with CIC, is organizing an International Holocaust Remembrance Day Virtual Classroom on January 27. A French language virtual classroom will follow on February 4.

These professional development events will help educators discover new approaches to teaching the Holocaust and its lessons on human rights, racism, genocide, democratic values and citizenship. During the virtual classrooms, which will run as live webcasts, educators will interact with Holocaust experts in addition to teachers such as the winner of the CIC Award for Excellence in Holocaust Education, Scott Masters, as well as award finalists Line DubĂŠ and Annie Frenette.

Educators will also have the opportunity to view NFB films and access innovative learning resources. The moderator of the English webcast will be Dr. Carson Phillips of the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre. The French language webcast will be moderated by Jacqueline Celemencki of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre.

CIC is also partnering with the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre to offer workshops on the Holocaust for newcomers in the Greater Toronto Area, Kitchener-Waterloo and Peterborough, Ontario. In addition, the Azrieli Foundation, an organization that publishes memoirs and produces videos by Holocaust survivors who emigrated to Canada, will provide resource

packages to newcomers participating in these workshops and to educators who register for virtual classrooms. These packages, available in English or French, include Holocaust survivor memoirs, a DVD and thematic questions.

•Canada has been profoundly shaped by approximately 40,000 Holocaust survivors, who resettled across the country after World War II. •In 2011, Canada was the first country to sign the Ottawa Protocol on Combating Anti Semitism, an international action plan to help nations measure their progress in the fight against anti-Semitism. •In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. • Canada joined the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2009 and was named Chair in March 2013. Canada’s New Asylum System a Success Total savings already over $600 million Toronto, January 22, 2014 — In the year since comprehensive reforms to Canada’s asylum system took effect, the number of new asylum claims from safe countries has decreased to historic lows, ensuring that genuine refugees – truly vulnerable people from some of the world's most volatile areas – receive faster and fairer protection, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced today.

Asylum claims from countries that historically produced high numbers of unfounded claims have dropped by a dramatic 87 per cent. The overall reduction in asylum claims has already resulted in greater than anticipated savings to Canadian taxpayers of more than $600 million in provincial and federal government welfare, education and healthcare costs. Overall savings are projected to be more than $1.6 billion over five years.

•In 2011, there were approximately 6,300 asylum claims from EU countries – more than from Africa or Asia.

•Under the new rules, annual asylum claims from Hungary – an EU country and the top source country for asylum claims in Canada over the past three years with already high withdrawal and abandonment rates- have declined by an overwhelming 97 per cent.

•Asylum claims from the United States have also dropped significantly - down by roughly 80 per cent from the year before.

•Countries in distress, such as Afghanistan, Congo, Egypt, Somalia and Syria, now rank among the top 10 source countries for asylum claims in Canada.

“The new system is working and we are providing faster protection to those in genuine need. By reducing the number of unfounded claims, we are able to focus our resources on refugees who truly need Canada’s protection. Canadians take great pride in the generosity and compassion of our immigration and refugee programs, but we have no tolerance for those who seek to take unfair advantage of our country. The success of the new system after a year demonstrates that we have reinforced the integrity of the system and are guarding against abuse of our generosity.”

Consultation to Right Historical Wrongs Continues

BC Liquor Stores collect $217,000 for Typhoon Haiyan relief BC Liquor Store customers donated more than $217,000 to support Red Cross relief efforts in the Philippines. One hundred per cent of these funds have been forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.

On November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan – one of the strongest storms ever recorded with wind speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour – destroyed thousands of homes and completely devastated parts of the Central Philippines.

Following a request from the Canadian Red Cross, BC Liquor Stores began accepting donations from customers and staff on November 12 to support Red Cross efforts in the Philippines.

The fundraising campaign took place in all 195 BC Liquor Store locations and ran until December 9.

The Province of British Columbia matched the first $300,000 donated by British Columbians through all donation channels.

In total, British Columbians contributed more than $3.68 million to the Canadian Red Cross.

The Red Cross is using donations to help provide urgently needed assistance in communities most affected by Haiyan. The storm left 4.1 million people displaced, and urgent, life-saving emergency services continue to be required in the forms of food, clean water, medical supplies and emergency shelter. o

Teresa Wat, Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism has begun meeting with the Chinese community in BC to identify wording for a formal apology for historical wrongs. Minister Wat will also consult with members of the legislature to work towards a formal apology which all parties in the provincial government can support.

The Chinese community in British Columbia faced inequality and discrimination between 1885 and 1923 when discriminatory legislation was imposed, including the Chinese Immigration Act. From 1923 to 1947 Chinese individuals were restricted from entering Canada under the Chinese Exclusion Act. In the next sitting of the

legislature, the government plans to introduce a motion regarding a formal apology to British Columbia’s Chinese community for historical wrongs. The government will consult with British Columbia’s Chinese community to work towards offering an appropriate public apology, to be read in the provincial legislature and supported by all parties in the BC

government.

Over the coming weeks, community-consultation forums will be held around the province to bring together Chinese community associations and individuals directly affected by historical wrongs. Their input will help develop an apology. These consultations will be open to the public. o

Racism: It can stop with you A Message from the BC Ministry of International Trade and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism “I’m not racist, but...� How many times have we heard people use this phrase to justify a racist comment or attitude? Many people think that racism is a thing of the past. But, in reality, racism does still exist in Canada, and in your community.

Racism is a set of mistaken assumptions, opinions and actions resulting from the belief that one group of people, categorized by colour or ancestry, is inherently superior to another. It can be experienced in many ways, including attitudes and behaviours, values and norms of society, and rules and policies of organizations.

Skills Training In the Oil and Gas Sectors Gets Boost As BC prepares for thousands of jobs in the oil and gas sector, the BC government is providing Northern Lights College (NLC) with $200,000 to provide British Columbians with training. “What we’re seeing at Northern Lights College is a great example of creativity and flexibility in our public post-secondary system,� said Amrik Virk, Minister of Advanced Education. “Our government has asked postsecondary institutions to make sure they are providing the training British Columbians need and NLC’s Centre of Training Excellence is doing just that.�

These destinations are popular with local visitors and have a higher proportion of international travellers than most other BC Parks destinations. By providing reservations for the entire season early in the year, visitors can properly plan while knowing a site will be available for their vacation.

In 2013, the Bowron Lake canoe circuit had 1,073 bookings and the Berg Lake Trail had 1,463 bookings, with approximately 25 per cent of bookings originating from outside of Canada.

Mount Robson Provincial Park is the second oldest park in British Columbia’s park system. At 3,954 metres, Mount Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. The Berg Lake Trail covers 23 kilometres and climbs 800 metres, offering scenic views and experiences for hikers of all abilities.

Bowron Lake Provincial Park is located in central BC, about 117 kilometres east of Quesnel.

The park’s canoe circuit can be reserved from May 15 to September 21. The entire circuit encompasses 116 kilometres of paddling across 10 lakes, and takes from six to 10 days to complete.

The West Side experience, which is less than half the circuit, takes two to four days to complete.

Those interested in paddling the Bowron Lake canoe circuit should have some wilderness canoeing experience.

Grandmothers Keep Kids Connected to Families, Culture Near Prince Rupert on BC’s North Coast, a group of grandmothers has been keeping Lax Kw’alaams children and youth connected to their culture and community, while giving them a voice in planning their futures.

Lax Kw’alaams is a First Nations community commonly called Port Simpson, in the traditional territory of the Tsimshian nation.

These Tsimshian elders act as positive role models who build trust with the children, their families and their community through communication. For example, the grandmothers contacted each child in government care from their community through video conferencing before meeting each child in person.

University a Reality for Young People in Care For many children and youth in government care, the thought of going to university may seem like little more than a dream. But it’s a dream that Thomas Murtland made a reality, and now he wants to mentor other young people so that they can also experience the rewards of a postsecondary education.

Growing up, Thomas faced some of the challenges common to many children and youth in government care. Having spent time in two foster care settings and at several family placements, he lacked the home stability and steady financial support that would help him move into postsecondary education.

Now, he is one of more than 1,200 young adults who have benefitted from the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s Agreements with Young Adults (AYA), a $5-million program that supports young people aged 19-24 who are making the transition out of government care and into adulthood.

Through AYA, Thomas got the support he needed, including advice, guidance and funding for room and board to attend Trinity Western University in Langley. He also received a separate tuition bursary through the Youth Education Assistance Fund (YEAF). After graduating earlier this year with a degree in general studies, he returned to Trinity Western, this time as an admissions counsellor who helps secondary school graduates with entrance into postsecondary education.

Thomas has since offered to work with the ministry to explore a formalized mentoring process that would allow those who have had success through the AYA program to share their knowledge and experience with others.

The AYA program provides financial assistance and support services to help young people finish secondary school, learn job and life skills, attend college or university, or complete a rehabilitative program. Under the AYA program, social workers work with young people to develop a written plan that helps them address their needs and goals as they approach adulthood.

Throughout the agreement, the social worker maintains close contact, provides advice and support, and helps youth make decisions that will enable them to achieve their full potential. o

Winter Hits East Coast The first blizzard of 2014 hit eastern Canada, causing flight cancellations and school closures. Up to 25 centimetres of snow mixed with strong winds caused whiteout conditions in Nova Scotia in the first week of the new year. In Halifax, streets were slippery and icy temperatures hit -25 C with the wind chill.

Power blackouts were reported in parts of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. PEI temperatures dipped to about -30 C with wind chill while New Brunswick forecasters predicted lows of -40 C. A blizzard warning for parts of Labrador warned of 25 to 50 centimetres of snow and temperatures of -45 C or colder.

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson back on A&E Phil Robertson, from the popular series Duck Dynasty, was suspended on December 18 for comments he made to GQ magazine that the Bible views gays as sinners akin to adulterers, prostitutes and swindlers. However, Robertson was reinstated by the network nine days later.

Robertson’s remarks were criticized by rights groups including GLAAD (Gay &

Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). But Robertson received a flood of support from those who share his views and others who defended his freedom of speech. A petition calling for A&E to bring him back reached 250,000 signatures in about a week.

A&E announced that they were reinstating Robertson after discussions with the Robertson family and consultations with numerous advocacy groups.

Rumours are that Robertson now plans to move his family -- plus millions of dollars of advertising and merchandise revenue -- to a Christian channel that is more in keeping with his views.

Ice storm cleanup continues Tens of thousands of people were without power for nearly a week after an ice storm struck Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada the weekend before Christmas.

Kiss to perform at NHL game The National Hockey League announced that the rock band Kiss will play during the pregame festivities and first intermission of the Stadium Series game between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks on January 25. Kiss is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of its first album and will also be inducted into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame this year.

Challenges treating mentally ill drug addicts Police and emergency workers are increasingly dealing with people whose brains have been damaged by drug addiction and who appear to be responsible for violence on Vancouver’s streets.

Drugs such as cocaine and crystal meth can damage the brain, but the effects of crystal meth can be permanent, sometimes leading to psychosis that won’t go away even after people stop using.

Earlier this year, Vancouver’s police chief and the mayor asked the provincial government for help. Police say 21 per cent of their calls involve someone who is mentally ill. St. Paul’s Hospital, because of its closeness to the Downtown Eastside, sees most of Vancouver’s psychiatric emergencies. According to police, the hospital has had a 43-per-cent increase in people with severe mental health issues during the past three years.

Many people with severe mental illnesses and drug addictions are unwelcome in the community and are also homeless. These factors make it harder for them to get treatment. People with nerve damage caused by crystal meth may have to take anti-psychosis medication for the rest of their lives. As well, they will need help with housing and intensive follow-up with a treatment team that generally includes a psychiatrist, family physician, social worker, case manager, nurse, occupational therapist and psychologist.

BC’s Health Minister Terry Lake has responded last November with a series of measures including nineto-12 bed psychiatric assessment and stabilization unit at St. Paul’s and two more Assertive Community Treatment teams. The ACT Teams include social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, addiction counsellors, police and outreach workers to help people discharged from emergency.

Russia bombing kills at least 16 A suicide bomber struck a busy railway station in southern Russia on December 29th, killing herself and at least 15 others. About 45 other people were wounded in the explosion, which occurred six weeks before the start of the Sochi Olympics.

Workers Program New rules came into effect December 31 giving government officials the power to inspect Canadian workplaces without warrants and to blacklist employers who abuse the country’s foreign worker program.

The regulations are part of changes to the country’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The program ensures foreign workers are only hired when Canadians can’t be found for a job.

“These changes are part of a larger reform of the program that demonstrates our government’s commitment to protect foreign workers from the risk of abuse and exploitation,” said Chris Alexander, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister. “One of the goals of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is to deal with labour shortages on a temporary basis, and these reforms will help ensure that the program is used as intended.”

Drugs in the water An investigative report by The Associated Press estimates that more than 113,000 tonnes of pharmaceuticals go down the drains from U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities each year. Add to this the expired medications we throw out at home, and we have a frightening mix of medication floating around in our water and soil. A study by the U.S. Geological Survey reports finding pharmaceuticals in 139 of the streams it sampled. Another study in France found that 31 of its 38 wastewater samples can mutate genes. This raises the question of whether such drug concoctions can increase the risk of cancer in humans.

Canada 150 - Have your say!

The federal government launched cross-country consultations to seek Canadians’ views on how they would like to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

“Canada’s 150th celebrations will give us the opportunity to reflect on all the things that make Canada the united, prosperous and free country it is today,” said Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “I invite all Canadians across our great country to tell us how they would like to celebrate in 2017.”

The consultations kicked off last month with a roundtable in Toronto. Canadians are invited to participate in the consultations through an online questionnaire at Canada.ca/150 or Canada150.gc.ca.

Over the next four years celebrations will mark key historic milestones that have defined the country.

In 2013 Apple iPhones came equipped with a fingerprint scanner with which users could unlock their phones.

Other manufacturers are following the lead, adding fingerprint scanners, voice recognition and eye scanners to their products.

These features allow the user’s unique physical characteristics to unlock the device. These unique characteristics—biometrics—may allow smartphone and computer users to do away with passwords in favour of their own unique physical traits. The typical person now requires 11 unique passwords for everything from online banking to social media.

CEOs ring in New Year with a bang Just after lunch on the first official work day of the year, Canada’s highest paid CEOs pocket what would take most Canadians all of 2014 to earn, says the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ (CCPA) annual CEO pay review. The review, All In A Day’s Work? CEO Pay In Canada by economist and CCPA Research Associate Hugh Mackenzie, looks at 2012 compensation levels for Canada’s highest paid 100 CEOs and finds they pocketed an average of $7.96 million in contrast to the average Canadian income of $46,634.

Increase in reported flu cases The number of flu cases in the Lower Mainland has more than doubled in the past two weeks. The latest B.C. Centre for Disease Control influenza surveillance report for Dec. 15 to 28 shows that at the beginning of December, 17 per cent of patients with respiratory illnesses tested positive for influenza. hHealth officials are confirming five people have died from an outbreak of H1N1 influenza in Alberta, where there have been over 960 confirmed cases of the flu; most of these are of the H1N1 strain, which is covered by this year’s flu vaccine.

Starfish Disease outbreak could be radiation Something is killing starfish off of West Coast. Marine biologists are calling the ailment “sea star wasting syndrome.” The mysterious illness first appeared in June off of Washington state has now spread from Sitka, Alaska, to San Diego.

Starfish first waste away and then seem to melt. A healthy group of starfish can die in just 24 hours.

Researchers believe the sea stars’ disintegration and death is caused by bacterial infection, but don’t know what is putting the sea stars at risk of infection. Some say nuclear pollution from damaged the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant could be partially to blame.

Large amounts of debris washed up on North American shores following the 2011 earthquake. Nuclear pollution could have come with that. o

Yet US regulators have delayed or failed to adopt measures designed to reduce deaths and injuries from acetaminophen overdose, which the agency calls a “persistent, important public health problem.�

The FDA has repeatedly deferred decisions on consumer protections even when they were endorsed by the agency’s own advisory committees, records show.

In 1977, an expert panel convened by the FDA issued urgently worded advice, saying it was “obligatory� to put a warning on the drug’s label that it could cause “severe liver damage.� After much debate, the FDA added the warning 32 years later. The panel’s recommendation was part of a broader review to set safety rules for acetaminophen, which is still not finished.

Four years ago, another FDA panel backed a sweeping new set of proposals to bolster the safety of overthe-counter acetaminophen. The agency hasn’t implemented them. Just last month, the FDA blew through another deadline.

Regulators in other developed countries, from Great Britain to Switzerland to New Zealand, have limited how much acetaminophen consumers can buy at one time or required it to be sold only by pharmacies.

The FDA has placed no such limits on the drug in the US. Instead, it has continued to debate basic safety questions, such as what the maximum recommended

But over more than three decades, the company repeatedly fought against safety warnings, dosage restrictions and other measures meant to safeguard users of the drug, according to company memos, court records, documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, and interviews with hundreds of regulatory, corporate and medical officials.

The US Food and Drug Administration has long been aware of studies showing the risks of acetaminophen – in particular, that the margin between the amount that helps and the amount that can cause serious harm is smaller than for other pain relievers. So, too, has McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the unit of Johnson & Johnson that has built Tylenol into a billion-dollar brand and the leader in acetaminophen sales.

But after the initiative failed, the company kept its experiments confidential, even when the FDA inquired about the feasibility of developing such a drug.

Later, McNeil opposed even a modest government campaign to educate the public about acetaminophen’s risks, in part because it would harm Tylenol sales.

All the while, it has marketed Tylenol’s safety. Tylenol was the pain reliever “hospitals use most,� one iconic ad said. The one “recommended by pediatricians,� said another. “Safe, fast pain relief,� its packages promised.

In written responses to questions for this story, as well as a pre-recorded statement by its vice president for medical affairs, McNeil said it has always acted to ensure its products were used safely. “McNeil takes acetaminophen overdose very seriously, which is why we have taken significant steps over the years to mitigate the risk,� the company wrote. McNeil has engineered safety packaging and spent millions on research, education and poison control centers that advise people who have overdosed.

The company said that science on acetaminophen had evolved over time and that it had implemented safety measures accordingly. Most recently, it announced it will soon add red lettering to the caps of medicine bottles saying they contain acetaminophen and that users should read the label.

to do so. The company then said it was taking such steps voluntarily.

McNeil also stressed that it has always followed FDA regulations.

McNeil objected to the thrust of questions from ProPublica and This American Life, saying they indicated “a clear bias� in favor of plaintiff’s lawyers who are suing the company.

The company declined to answer questions about individual cases of death or injury. “Our hearts go out to those who have suffered harm from acetaminophen overdose, and to the families of those who lost their lives as a result,� McNeil wrote in its statement.

FDA officials said the agency saw the benefits of keeping acetaminophen widely available as outweighing the “relatively rare� risk of liver damage or death. Some patients cannot tolerate drugs such as ibuprofen, and for them acetaminophen may be the best option, said one agency official.

The FDA has bolstered acetaminophen warnings as new science about the drug emerged, the agency said in a statement.

But FDA officials acknowledged the agency had moved sluggishly to address the mounting toll of liver damage caused by acetaminophen.

They blamed changing research, small budgets, an overworked staff and a cumbersome process for changing rules for older drugs such as Tylenol slowing them down.

The agency has greater authority over prescription drugs, and it has already slapped medications containing acetaminophen with a “black box warning� that says overdosing can lead to “liver transplant and death.� Paradoxically, the same medicine sold over the counter does not tell patients that death is a possible side effect. “Among over-the-counter medicines, it’s among our top priorities,� said Dr. Sandy Kweder, one of the FDA’s top experts on acetaminophen. “It just takes time.�

Many doctors believe in acetaminophen and some medical associations advise patients to take it for mild to moderate pain or reducing fever. “Given the number of doses given annually, the track record is incredibly safe,� said Dr. Bill Banner, a pediatrician and the medical director of the Oklahoma Poison Control Center.

Every over-the-counter pain reliever can cause harm. Even without overdosing, aspirin and ibuprofen can lead to stomach bleeding. In extremely rare cases, according to the FDA, recommended doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen can provoke a skin reaction that can kill.

But the FDA says acetaminophen carries a special risk. About a quarter of Americans routinely take more over-the-counter pain relief pills of all kinds than they are supposed to, surveys show. That behavior is "particularly troublesome" for acetaminophen, an FDA report said, because the drug's narrow safety margin places "a large fraction of users close to a toxic dose in the ordinary course of use.�

The FDA sets the maximum recommended daily dose of acetaminophen at 4 grams, or eight extra strength acetaminophen tablets. That maximum applies to both over-the-counter and prescription drugs with acetaminophen.

Taken over several days, as little as 25 percent above the maximum daily dose – or just two additional extra strength pills a day – has been reported to cause liver damage, according to the hagency.

Taken all at once, a little less than four times the maximum daily dose can cause death. A comparable figure doesn't exist for ibuprofen, because so few people have died from overdosing on that drug.

About as many Americans take ibuprofen as take acetaminophen, according to consumer surveys from the mid-2000s.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Association of Poison Control Centers collect data on the number of deaths associated with each drug, but the figures are incomplete, making comparisons subject to question. McNeil contends the databases do not contain the information needed to draw conclusions about the relative risks of different medicines.

The company and some epidemiologists maintain that these data sets undercount deaths resulting from chronic use of naproxen, ibuprofen and similar pain relievers.

Still, the data show that acetaminophen is linked to more deaths than any other over-the-counter pain reliever.

From 2001 to 2010, annual acetaminophen-related deaths amounted to about twice the number attributed to all other overthe-counter pain relievers combined, according to the poison control data.

In 2010, only 15 deaths were reported for the entire class of pain relievers, both prescription and over-the-counter, that includes ibuprofen, data from the CDC shows.

That same year, 321 people died from acetaminophen toxicity, according to CDC data. More than half – 166 – died from accidental overdoses. The rest overdosed deliberately or their intent was unclear. For the decade 2001 through 2010, the data shows, 1,567 people died from inadvertently taking too much of the drug.

Acetaminophen overdose sends as many as 78,000 Americans to the emergency room annually and results in 33,000 hospitalizations a year, federal data shows. Acetaminophen is also the nation’s leading cause of acute liver failure, according to data from an ongoing study funded by the National Institutes for Health.

Behind these statistics are families upended and traumatized and, in the worst cases, shattered by loss.

m sure that many of you are already committed to some kind of career path and are steadily building up your credits towards its fulfillment. I wish you all the luck in the world, but this article is an attempt to warn you about some possible minefields in your future if you do not choose a job which is, or will be, potentially computerisable. Recent advances in real-time software, machine learning, and dedicated robotics programming have already eliminated so many human occupations that the future of the jobs market begins to resemble a quicksand in an earthquake.

How many of you remember telephone operators? light rail engineers (i.e. train drivers)? automobile - (or any other mass product) assembly line workers? I know most of that last category were ‘offshored’ to countries with low labour costs, but that phenomenon is now slowly reversing as companies like Phillips (of Holland) bring the assembly work back home to be done by robots which are even cheaper than the dollar-a-day workers in Bangladesh, Myanmar, or wherever. For a start, they work 24-7 and don’t take sick days. They don’t complain or have kids or form unions.

Google has a fleet of Priuses that can handle city traffic by themselves, so, do you think it will be long before there are no more airline pilots, truck drivers, store clerks [of all kinds], bank tellers, ticket takers, bicycle repairers, [any repairers; who has things repaired anymore?]. The list goes on and on and keeps getting longer. I know you are probably saying to yourself that you are not planning on doing any of these jobs, but how do you know what is coming down the pike? [going to happen in the near future]. There is a strategy available to you to reduce your chances of being robotized. [roboticized?] Read on.

This phenomenon has, of course, a long history and we find the example of the knitting machine design which was shown by a certain William Lee to Queen Elizabeth 1 of England in the late 1500’s. She was horrified at the thought of all the hosiery workers (stocking makers) who would be reduced to poverty by this ‘monstrosity’. William Lee was obliged to leave the country.

300 years later, at the height of the newly industrial Victorian era, the writer Oscar Wilde, in an essay entitled ‘The Soul of Man under Socialism’, wrote: Up to the present, man has been, to a certain extent, the slave of machinery, and there is something tragic in the fact that as soon as man had invented a machine to do his work he began to starve. This, however, is, of course, the result of our property system and our system of competition. One man owns a machine which does the work of five hundred men. Five hundred men are, in consequence, thrown out of employment, and, having no work to do, become hungry and take to thieving. (terrorism? drug dealing?)The one man secures the produce of the machine and keeps it, and has five hundred times as much as he should have, and probably, which is of much more importance, a great deal more than he really wants. (really?)Were that machine the property of all, everyone would benefit by it. Machinery competes against man. Under proper conditions machinery will serve man.

The availability of big data was identified as a major trend that has given engineers huge amounts of complex data to work with; which has made it possible for computers to deal with problems that, until recently, only people could handle.

For instance, pattern recognition software applied to patient records, clinical trials, medical reports and journals makes it possible for computers to be used as diagnostic tools, comparing data to arrive at the best possible treatment plan. Fraud detection, pre-trial research in legal cases, stock-trading and patient-monitoring can now be handled by software after the arrival of big data. “Such algorithmic improvements over human judgment are likely to become increasingly common,” the study says. “Although the extent of these developments remains to be seen, estimates

by McKinsey Global Institute (2013) suggest that sophisticated algorithms could substitute for approximately 140 million full-time knowledge workers worldwide.

Hence, while technological progress throughout economic history has largely been confined to the mechanisation of manual tasks, requiring physical labour, technological progress in the twenty-first century can be expected to contribute to a wide range of cognitive tasks, which, until now, have largely remained a human domain. Of course, many occupations being affected by these developments are still far from fully computerisable, meaning that the computerisation of some tasks will simply free-up time for human labour to perform other tasks. Nonetheless, the trend is clear: computers increasingly challenge human labour in a wide range of cognitive tasks (Brynjolfsson and McAfee, 2011).”

So, the question becomes-‘which jobs are least likely to be replaced (automatized)?’

The paper does a good job of attaching probabilities to a table of about 700 occupations (go to link and see table at end of paper). Some of them are surprising.

Divided

Tyee article examines Canadian cohesion and fragmentation Canadians are more attached to their country than the people of any other democracy, according to Micheal Valpy in an article published by TheTyee.ca. Valpy cites Ottawa's EKOS Research Associates, which has examined the state of social cohesion in Canada. EKOS finds that foreign-born Canadians have a marginally stronger attachment to the country than do native born -- 77 per cent versus 75 per cent.

In fact, EKOS finds no differences in values held by native-born and foreign-born Canadians. The percentage of Canadians attached to ethnic identities is dropping dramatically -- down 20 percentage points over the past 20 years.

According to EKOS president Frank Graves, this bond to Canada has been high across all demographic cohorts for at least the past 15 years except for a modest decline among the young.

Quebecers' and aboriginals were unenthusiastic in their feelings for the country -- less than 40 per cent of Quebecers report a strong attachment to the country. If these sentiments are factored out Graves says Canadians' bond to their land would very likely lead the world.

On the other hand, EKOS and the research project sponsored by the Atkinson Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the Honderich family and the Toronto Star, conclude that the bonds that hold Canadians together are coming apart, leaving a nation profoundly divided along lines of age, education and work.

The percentage of young, highly educated and progressive Canadians that voted in the 2011 federal election was under 40 per cent and Graves predicts it may well slip into the teens within the next couple of elections.

This generation sees a nation shaped by public institutions, chiefly governments, that favour aging Baby Boomers.

Household Finances for New Canadians In a story published in the Globe and Mail last November reporter Romina Maurino looked at how immigrants sometimes underestimate the cost of their first year in Canada. Two challenges posed particular difficulty to new families: establishing a credit history, and the cost of university education for children.

The Canadian government

recommends that newcomers come to Canada with $17,000 in savings. But many find that this money doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go very far.

Newcomers often underestimate the amount of money that they will spend during their first year here. And it can take that whole first year for newcomers to find a job. So, financial planners advise, plan a budget and stick to it, especially during the first year.

Establishing a credit history is very important. Talk to a financial advisor about best ways to develop your credit rating. It is also very important to buy term insurance and illness insurance to cover expenses such as a mortgage or automobile payments, and to protect your family in case of an illness or accident.

Be sure to have cash put away for emergencies. If you can, find

investments that can make your money last longer, and purchase RRSPs. Once they begin making money, newcomers with children should try to set up RESPs. Newcomers have a large number of resources available to them.

There are a wealth of training, language, and government programs that can offer financial assistance and job searches.

Guidebook featured in online news magazine In an article titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;For International Students, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Guidebookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Breaks Down Lower Mainland Life - New monthly mag aims to help visitors become Vancouverites,â&#x20AC;? writer Katie Hyslop has profiled Guidebook in the online news magazine The Tyee.

Hyslop starts with some impressive statistics: About 94,000 international students were studying in British Columbia in 2012. This number is expected to increase 50 per cent by 2016. She also points to the federal governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement that it wants to nearly double the number of international students to 450,000 by 2022. As well, since 2006, an annual average of 42,000 new permanent residents started a life here. Over 80 per cent of residents and students settle in the Lower Mainland.

All this sets the stage for Guidebook â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a resource for area newcomers that gives summaries of local news, arts and cultural events, restaurant reviews, and a guide to shopping, eating, and studying in Vancouver.

Guidebook continues to welcome writers and editors, and encourages feedback from international students about their lives and what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to see in the magazine.

Find a community agency that works with newcomers to help you sort through these many resources and find the ones that will be best for your situation.

In a related story, reporter Dianne Nice highlights five financial tips for newcomers to make a successful transition to life in Canada: 1) Get information before coming. Before coming to Canada, look for information sessions in your home country. The Canadian consulate may help.

Projects such as the Canadian Immigration Integration Project can prepare newcomers for integration into the Canadian labour market while still in their home country. Before you leave for Canada, find out if there are free government services offered in the area where you will be living, and if you qualify for government benefits. Visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for a list of immigrant services in the area where you will be living.

3) Choose the right bank account. Speak with your financial institution about choosing the right account for you. Different accounts might come with different service fees based on your transactions and on your average monthly balance. Find out which type of account will work best to save you money on service fees.

4) Build your credit history. Many large banks now offer credit solutions to help skilled newcomers get started without prior credit history. Your credit history from your home country is not always accessible to Canadian financial institutions, so talk to your institution when you are setting up your accounts.

5) Make a budget and track your spending. There are many online banking tools that can help you manage your monthly spending so you can keep track of where your money is going. o

New Compass Card System

TransLink has recently released Compass -- a new way of paying the fare for public transportation. TransLink is expecting about 80,000 customers to be using this new system by the end of January this year.

With compass, using public transportation even including West Coast Express will be much more convenient. Customers simply tap their Compass Cards on the card readers located at the entrance and exit of the bus and at the fare gates. In addition, the old 90-minute transfer rule applies to Compass as well.

There are three types of Compass cards, Adult Compass Card, Concession Compass Card, and Compass Tickets. The Adult Compass Card is believed to be used most commonly and the Concession Card is designed for those who are below the age of 19 above the age of 65. The Compass Tickets are for those who occasionally ride public transportations and for visitors.

To use this convenient system, customers have to pay a $6 deposit and basically add Stored Value to the card to tap in and out of given locations.

The value has to always remain positive to tap in and out, so customers must reload their cards before the next trip. If anyone does not need the card, they can always return it to the Compass Customer Service Centre and get the deposit refunded.

TransLink proudly announces several main benefits of adopting this new Compass card system: 1. Compass Card replaces more than 150 different tickets to one rechargeable card that works anywhere.

2. Although Compass Cards are electronic, they do not require personal information, so identity safety can be guaranteed.

3. The system tracks all the transactions through the card to find out which

route is busier and how people transfer.

4. Compass Cards make it much easier for customers to pay the fare; simply just tap in and out with the card.

5. With the adoption of Compass, there will be many different adjustments for the whole system of TransLink such as station development and system improvement.

6. Compass Card can only be used for one person at a time, which means you cannot tap the card twice for you and other traveller. If you would like to pay for someone else, however, you can always purchase Compass Card or Compass Ticket using stored value in your Compass Card.

The new system of Compass offered by TransLink exhibits quite a lot of similarities with what is known as T-money in South Korea. T-money system, introduced since 2004, has been considered as one of the successful policies done by the Metropolis of Seoul. However, a diverse function of T-money is the biggest difference with Compass card. T-money card can be used to purchase things from every convenience store or bookstore. Moreover, with the card, people can buy a movie ticket in theater, have a meal in some franchise fast food restaurants, and pay for taxi even. With these functions, T-money card is considered to have cash value in most occasions.

TransLink allows existing fare tickets to be used bus. However, if you would like to travel on the SkyTrain, you have to purchase another fare ticket because the existing fare ticket cannot pass the fare gates which only work by tapping Compass Cards in and out. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged to use Compass Cards. Compass Cards can be purchased online, by phone, at every Compass vending machine located at SeaBus, West Coast Express, and SkyTrain stations. They are also available at 18 London Drugs stores.

As a newcomer to BC, it’s natural to have a long list of questions about life in your new country – especially if you have a family. The Settlement Workers in the Burnaby School District have compiled a list of questions that are often asked by new immigrants who have a school-age child, or children, attending a public school. Browse through the list of questions to get information to help you and your family.

APPRENTICESHIP BASICS If you’ve been thinking about a career in the trades, an apprenticeship can help you get there.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and classroom learning that leads to a trade credential – or “ticket”. Once you complete your apprenticeship and receive your ticket, you are qualified to work in a skilled trade. You can be an apprentice during high school or after you graduate.

Apprenticeship training helps you get a Certificate of Qualification (COQ), which is accepted across BC. About 50 trades also offer an Interprovincial (IP) Red Seal, which certifies you to work across Canada.

WHO CAN BE AN APPRENTICE? Apprenticeships are open to women, men, and youth. Everyone is welcome, even if you’re in high school, finished college, or simply want a career change.

ITA also offers several training programs for Aboriginal people, women, and youth interested in trades careers.

HOW LONG IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? Most apprenticeships take four years to complete, depending on the trade.

WHAT DOES CERTIFICATION MEAN? Upon completion of classroom training, on-the-job hours, and a final exam, a certified journeyperson will confirm your skill level and competence.

Once you receive your ticket, whether Interprovincial Red Seal, or BC Certificate of Qualification, you’ll be recognized by colleagues and the public as a skilled professional in your trade.

IS AN APPRENTICESHIP WORK OR SCHOOL? It is both. Apprentices spend about 85% of their time learning on the job. That means you earn money while you learn.

About 15% of your apprenticeship is spent in classroom-based training – also known as technical training.

WHO TRAINS APPRENTICES? Skilled trades professionals teach apprentices on the job and pass on their wisdom from years of experience in the industry.

In addition to this hands-on training, apprentices also receive classroom training at a college, university, or training institution. Class instructors are certified journeypersons with experience in the field.

ARE THERE EXAMS? Yes, each trade has a final written exam and some trades may also have exams for each level.

FIND AN EMPLOYER If you’re ready to start an apprenticeship, you’ll need to find a job with an employer who will sponsor and train you.

Q. How can I find information about universities in BC? A. Universities in BC offer a wide variety of undergraduate degree programs and a range of programs at the graduate level. Some universities undertake original and

Q. Why would my child volunteer at school and how can we find more information?

A. Volunteering as a young person makes meaningful contributions to the community while gaining valuable experience that will help in the future when applying to university and looking for employment. Q. What is the Advanced Placement Program (AP)?

A. The Advanced Placement program is a challenging academic program designed to provide motivated highschool students with the opportunity to take college level academic courses while still in secondary school. Q. What is the difference between a semester or non-semester secondary school?

A. Some schools are organized over a ten-month period that begins in September and ends in June. All students in secondary schools are able to enrol in eight courses during that period of time. Students in a semester secondary school, students take the same four courses each day for the first five months and then four different courses each day for the second five months.

In a non-semester secondary school, students take all eight courses through the full ten months, alternating between taking four courses one day (Day 1) and four different courses the next day (Day 2). A small restaurant on East Broadway serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine. All menu items are served with flatbread called injera and eaten with hands only.

A small, local Indian restaurant in the Hastings-Sunrise neighborhood. Offers an a la carte menu as well as lunch and dinner buffet.

Fassil is a fairly inconspicuous restaurant located on East Broadway near Fraser Street. It is a small restaurant with a bar, one large table, and several smaller tables.

The total seating capacity is roughly about 30 patrons. There is no waiting area, so when line ups start to form, you must wait outside, or a small group can stand at the entrance.

Situated on East Hastings near Slocan, Curry Zone can be easily missed if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t frequent the area by foot. Luckily, a friend of mine works nearby, and told me about it. Otherwise, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think I would have noticed it, in spite of being located on a heavy-traffic street. However, the aroma of fresh Indian spices really draws attention when you walk by. The restaurant seats around 25 patrons when the buffet carts are out, so it is a tight space. Tables are decent sized, and you are able to sit comfortably in an intimate setting with your party.

The owner is usually present; he is talkative and interacts with customers often. Service is average; the server who helped us seemed confused when we ordered our food. But our meals arrived within 15 minutes after ordering -- a big plus because we were hungry!

I confess: I am not familiar with Ethiopian cuisine, so I did not have any expectations, but I was surprised that the menu seemed to consist only of entrees: vegetarian, beef, lamb, and chicken dishes. All of the items were presented on a large dish, and they appeared to be what we would call â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or stews. My friend ordered the vegetarian combination, and I ordered the Gored Gored (beef sauteed in spices and butter).

All entrees are eaten by wrapping it in injera and eating it with your hands. The portions seemed small, but were filling and spicy.

Overall, I am not sure if this is representative of Ethiopian cuisine, but I found the menu rather limited, lacking appetizers, dessert, and starter salads.

I was surprised that the items were all served in similar fashion, as what we would call â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The injera bread was very filling, and I enjoyed the vegetarian combo. The restaurant is small and cozy, and a nice setting to enjoy a slow meal.

The no-utensils aspect of this was special, and made the experience more casual than other restaurants. o

Overall, Curry Zone has been consistent in their service and food, and that is enough for me to return. Their prices are more than fair, especially for the dinner buffet.

I like that it is a small restaurant, so it maintains that cozy feeling and noise level is not too high. While the tables may be cramped on a busy day, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother me too much. The selection of curries for buffet are a great way to sample all that is offered, and find what is best for you without having to come with a big party and share.

Curry Zone accepts orders online through their website, as well as phone orders. o

Service staff were all friendly and willing to answer questions. They always ensured our water was topped up, and were quick to replenish the buffet items.

From the a la carte menu, my favorite item was the chicken naan. For less than $7 you get two large pieces of naan stuffed with chicken, and dipped in butter chicken sauce. The naan is soft and chewy, and the sauce is just perfect- not too salty. It is a filling side order, so I order this on days where I know I need a snack before a late dinner. I also come for the buffets.

Lunch buffet runs from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm for a cost of $10.95 per person, while dinner buffet runs from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm for a cost of $12.95. In Vancouver, this is considered a steal! In general, the difference between the two menus is the number of dishes offered. Dinner buffet has more selection. The items offered are basically within the same variety: choice of salads, desserts, sides, and mains (curries). The buffet is self-served, and the waiter brings you a bread basket.

During lunch buffet, there were three salads, one dessert, three appetizers, two choices of rice, and seven varieties of main (including vegetarian curry, lamb curry, and butter chicken). I had second helpings of the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, Greek salad, and gulab jamun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sort of a dumpling soaked in a light syrup. While the buffet is restrictive in that you only get what they serve that day, the quality and variety more than makes up for it. You can also order from the a la carte menu if there are additional items you like that are not offered at the buffet.
