Short vowel a, /ă/ Chant It!
Say: I have an aaapple. Apple! Let’s take a bite. Crunch! Yum, apple! Act out: Pretend to bite into an apple and encourage students to join in. Model: Use a chant to say the sound and the spelling: Apple! /ă/, spelled a!
Break It and Match It!
Say: L et’s break off the beginning sound in apple: /ă/. Which of these words has the same beginning sound? Listen: lion, alligator, eagle (alligator).
