The official newsletter for Birmingham’s nonprofit organization improving lives through Animal-Assisted Therapy
We would like to introduce to you our future Hand in Paw campus, and how you can be a part of it. While Hand in Paw serves people of all ages in 100 sites throughout North Central Alabama, the difficult truth is that many, many organizations are awaiting our programs. Lacking the capacity to meet community demand, we embarked on a Capital Campaign to raise $2,000,000 in Phase I. The campaign will expand physical space and professional support to grow our volunteer corps and programs. “Ken Jackson’s gift of $500,000 to name the new headquarters after founder Beth Franklin, inspired an anonymous donor to give $500,000, and the community continues to rally around our efforts,” says Executive Director Laura Cardwell. “Thanks to these transformational gifts and donations from many other generous supporters, we are close to reaching our Phase I goal.” On October 24th, we broke ground (with help from some tenacious digging by a few of our furry friends.) This spring, we plan to begin renovating our existing building and constructing a large training
center, memorial garden, and gated dog path. This expansion will enable us to • Increase Therapy Team training, practice, and evaluation opportunities • Prepare volunteers to serve in complex medical settings by role playing in our simulation Children’s of Alabama hospital room • Provide programming on site, such as educational camps for children and youth • Host more interns, group service learning projects, workshops for practitioners, and grow our research department • Further engage our neighbors, expand partnerships throughout the region, and host conferences that will bring people from all over the country to Birmingham We envision our campus bustling with activity, and countless people walking, speaking, learning, and living more fully as a result. We hope you will help further Hand in Paw’s mission by supporting the campaign. Your gift will change lives.
