Hand in Paw’s Permanent New Home

Since 1996, when Hand in Paw was founded, we have rented office space at three different locations. Now, as of May 1st, we are excited to announce that we have purchased a building with plenty of space for the unique work that we do and have our first permanent home. We are now located at

617 38th Street South Birmingham, AL 35222

Our building sits on almost an acre of land, and has 8 offices, ample parking, and beautiful green space. We sit between Forest Park and Avondale Park. Check out the sketch to the left to see our plans for making the building perfect for Hand in Paw. On the list of things to come are a training room, lobby, dog bath area, and more.

Letter from the Executive Director Hello!

It’s been an exciting ten months for me as I have had the privilege of working with this warm hearted organization and all of the good folks who have made this place what it is today. So many wonderful things have happened. Our Therapy Teams made 77,000 visits in 2013!

There is a renewed spirit in the air about the good work of HIP. We feel it at every new event we experience. The support from the community has been overwhelming as we move forward improving lives through animal-assisted therapy and sharing our mission with people of all ages in all walks of life. The dedication of our kind staff and the commitment from our outstanding Board of Directors, Advisory Council and Jr. Board has been the fuel for our momentum!

Our new ‘Wags at Work’ program has been well received as we take Therapy Teams into corporate settings. Our friends at Regions Bank, Cadence Bank, Wells Fargo and FlexDigital have been most gracious to allow us to provide their employees with a ‘Coffee HIP Break’.

I guess the most exciting news is the move to our new location. We now have our first permanent home at 617 38th Street South. We are sitting on three-quarters of an acre with ample parking and a lush front yard. Our building will need reconstruction as we plan to create a large training room, dog bath, volunteer lounge and a place to have events to welcome everyone.

As we move forward, I encourage you to come see us, to attend our upcoming events and to spread the good news of Hand in Paw. Thank you so much for your support!

Proud to Serve Hand in Paw When HIP Executive Director Laura Cardwell called inquiring as to what day Chivas and I visited Spain Rehab Center at UAB and would I mind a group observe our session, I was thrilled be able to show what we do. After many calls to arrange for a convenient date for everyone, April 1st was the winner (no fooling). Les, my husband and Therapy Visit Assistant, and I tried to impress upon Chivas that he was going to be on center stage for this visit and to do just what he always does – motivate patients to work harder.

Everyone met in the lobby and after the introductions were made, the group went upstairs to begin the animal-assisted therapy session. While waiting outside the lab with Chivas patiently sitting at my side, there were numerous questions about the program and how the pets were used in the patient therapy and the needs of HIP. Once the session began, the UAB therapist incorporated Chivas in numerous ways to help the patients. When we were working with one therapist, others would ask if they could be next. This went on for the entire visit which ended only when the time was up. When leaving, other patients asked if they could just hold him for a minute because they missed their pet.

I believe the visitors saw firsthand the value of the services provided by HIP Therapy Teams and I could not have been prouder of the way Chivas responded to the many tasks he was asked to do that day.

As many of you know Chivas is our second therapy dog and had some big paws to fill. He has shown us that just like children, given the love and opportunity, they all have so much to offer!

On May 15th, Hand in Paw was awarded a $60K grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. We are so proud to have played a part in the process.

- Tina Currie Hand in Paw Therapy Team The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham’s grant of $60,000 over two years will be used to make our headquarters the ideal space for training new Therapy Teams. After renovations, we will be able to offer workshops and evaluations onsite, allowing us to increase the frequency of sessions offered and offer more opportunities for teams to practice for their tests. These changes will enable us to increase our volunteer corps and expand our Petscription program, so that therapy sessions like Tina describes are widely available to medical professionals and their patients.

No More Bullies! at UAB Engel School What would it be like if you could not depend on your emotions to guide you through the day?

What if every time that you thought about dogs, you remembered the time that you were viciously attacked? What would you do if things changed so often that you could not depend on whether your parents were going to be there to provide for you?

These questions and many more were in the minds of the students that HIP Therapy Teams served at UAB’s Engel School this year. Terri Jones & Katie, Boyce Turner, Susan Ragland, Millie Christopher & Darcy, Liz Young & Millie, Michele Pawlik & Cody, Susanne Webb & Dinah, and Sandy Hughes & Molly had a rare opportunity to serve in a highly emotionally charged atmosphere in this oasis from the very challenging school settings from which these young people came. They come to Engel every day to help them get their bearings and learn techniques that allow them to cope emotionally and behaviorally.

That is the beauty of the “No More Bullies!” Program that has been adopted by Hand in Paw. One day a week for six weeks, students could count on a furry friend to accept their petting and Therapy Teams who would listen to them. Really listen. These deserving young people told us at the end of the program that they had a new way of looking at pet care and safety, but more importantly, they saw a reason for what they were learning at the Engel School. Emotional outbursts were not uncommon, but the highly skilled Therapy Teams of HIP remained consistent and helped the children learn animal safety, reinforce techniques of self-control, respect, and responsibility in their school work as well as in their interactions with animals. It was an honor and a privilege to be included in this little portion of the education of these children. We all agreed that we came away with a new appreciation for the long journeys that these boys and girls have ahead. It was satisfying to know that they will carry the love of our HIP Therapy Teams with them.

Sit, Stay, Read! at Clay Elementary School In an article published in the Jefferson County Board of Education newsletter, Kathy Norris, Instructional Coach at Clay Elementary wrote: It (HIP Sit, Stay, Read!) has been one of the most positive experiences I’ve witnessed in twenty-four years of education.

Ywonna Whatley and Kobe went to Clay Elementary School on Wednesday, and Sweetie and I went on Thursday. Sit, Stay, Read! at Clay Elementary was, indeed, positive! From the time Sweetie and I walked in the school door through our last day, I experienced appreciation, good reading, and school spirit.

When Sweetie and I arrived the first day, we were welcomed warmly and thanked by everyone we met. Ms. Norris introduced us to fifth graders who read to Sweetie and me. These students were polite and respectful.

Being with them was a joy.

Each student chose a book to read and used phonics rules, context clues, and other reading skills. Comprehension was demonstrated by telling what the book characters had done and predicting what the characters might do next. While reading, the students gently petted Sweetie. School spirit was exhibited when telling about their teachers and happenings at school. School spirit was also shown throughout the school.

As Sweetie and I walked the halls, adults and children, with big smiles on their faces, asked questions about Sweetie. One Sit, Stay, Read! student saw friends and said, “I am reading to a dog! I am reading to Sweetie!”

One day, a school spirit event was occurring on the playground. As Sweetie and I walked across campus, we heard blasting over a speaker “Who let the dogs out? WHO? WHO? WHO? WHO?” I thought, “Hand in Paw let the dogs out! YEA! YEA! YEA! YEA!” Then all too soon, the last day to visit arrived.

As the students came to read for the last time, we said our “thank-you” and “good-bye”. To each Sit, Stay, Read! student, Ms. Norris gave pictures of Sweetie with the student, and I gave them a thank you note and Hand in Paw business card. The students’ reading will be missed, but Sit, Stay, Read! at Clay Elementary exceeded the goal of developing confident, fluent readers. It was a celebration of appreciation for Sit, Stay, Read!, dedicated teachers who taught excellent reading skills, and a positive school spirit!

When asked to return for the 2014-2015 School Year, I immediately replied, “I would love to!” When I asked Sweetie if she wanted to go back to Clay Elementary, she wagged her tail and said, “Ark!” I appreciate the opportunity of being part of Sit, Stay, Read! at Clay Elementary and look forward to the next school year.
