MAIZI MAKES A DIFFERENCE “My name is Rebekah Rickels and I have been teaching at Tuggle Elementary School for two years. Hand in Paw is extremely important to my class not only because of the behavioral effects it has on the students but also the emotional gains the students get out of having Maizi come to visit. I have always been a firm believer that animals can connect with humans in many interesting and important ways and have loved getting the chance to see this take place in my classroom this year. I have seen many
meaningful interactions with my students and Maizi but one I will never forget is a case where a student had many behavioral issues but would correct his behavior so he could participate, knowing that Maizi was coming to visit. I was able to use Maizi’s visits as a positive behavior reinforcement. Maizi has become a part of our class and helped teach the kids about responsibility, respect, and friendship. I plan to stay partners with Hand in Paw throughout the duration of my career in the classroom.” - Rebekah Rickels Special Education Teacher // Tuggle Elementary School
