HOW A 300 YEAR OLD INSTRUMENT CAN MAKE MUSIC SOUND BRAND NEW. Standing at the forefront of the historically informed movement, H+H delivers audiences a unique listening experience by playing on period instruments. Woodwinds are made of wood, not metal or plastic. Brass instruments have no modern valves. Strings are crafted of gut, not steel. And while the instruments make for a striking difference in the sound of the music, there are other reasons. The orchestra is smaller, 25 to 50 musicians as opposed to the 100 found in today’s conventional orchestras. Sharing the stage are 25 to 30 members of the chorus. This is just as when the music was written several centuries ago. Simply said, there is no better way to preserve the artistic intentions of history’s greatest composers. Harry Christophers launches our 204th season with a banquet of Bach’s greatest showpieces—from the sublime tapestry of his Double Violin Concerto (remember it from Children of a Lesser God?) to the exhilarating exuberance of the Third Brandenburg Concerto and the soaring majesty of the G Major Mass. This is the must-see concert for lovers of Bach, showcasing the H+H Orchestra and Chorus doing what they do best—bringing alive the spirit, energy, and beauty of Bach.
Experiencing Beethoven’s epic Emperor and Schubert’s Great Symphony played with H+H’s expert virtuosity, vigor, and vitality is a revelation. In the latest installment of a multi-season cycle of all the Mozart violin concertos, Aisslinn Nosky performs the Violin Concerto No. 5, bringing out its sparkle and spice. The Orchestra’s acclaimed cycle of Haydn symphonies continues with Symphony No. 99, whose delightful humor and joy is on full display; hearing it performed on period instruments is the next-best-thing to being at the London premiere. The fabulous H+H Chorus adds luster to one of Haydn’s greatest Masses—the richly and colorfully scored Harmoniemesse.
