ANNUAL REPORT 2021+22
On August 27, 2021, H+H returned to live performance for the first time in 18 months, presenting Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9 at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell for more than 10,000 listeners. Marin Alsop made her H+H debut, conducting soloists Susanna Phillips, soprano; Taylor Raven, mezzo-soprano; Issachah Savage, tenor; and Dashon Burton, bass-baritone as well as members of the H+H Youth Choruses and the H+H Orchestra and Chorus. For the final movement, a text adaptation by former U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith from the original German was used for the first time ever, making for an even more special event.

DEAR FRIENDS + SUPPORTERS,
The Handel and Haydn Society’s 2021–22 Season will be remembered for our return to live performance after a significant absence due to the pandemic. And what a joyous return it was! Following our DCR Hatch Memorial Shell grand opening, we welcomed audiences back to Symphony Hall in the fall. We are so grateful to our entire H+H community for your support and enthusiasm as we navigated these uncertain times together.
Alongside our in-person concert series, we launched H+H Plays On, an upgraded digital platform that featured every subscription concert along with other programs, including interviews and commentary from “host extraordinaire” Emily Marvosh and others. Whether you enjoyed H+H from the comfort of your home in Boston, somewhere else on the globe, or from your seat in Symphony Hall, NEC’s Jordan Hall, or one of our other venues, we are glad you are part of the H+H family and we look forward to connecting you with vibrant musical experiences each and every time our musicians take the stage.
H+H believes that music can connect us all through our shared humanity. We are committed to engaging with diverse communities across Boston and being a welcoming and inclusive organization. In January we established a new Audience Development Manager position, focused on building younger and more multicultural audiences.
This annual report is a tribute to the generosity of an ever-growing family that made transformation through music possible in new and innovative ways, and educated the next generation.
We have accomplished so much together, and through the strength of our community, we face the future with renewed vigor and sense of purpose.
Thank you for making it possible for H+H to uplift and bring joy, even in challenging times, as we have for more than two centuries! We look forward to seeing you at the concert hall and on screen in the coming year.

2021-22 SEASON: FROM PAUSE TO PLAY
The 2021-22 Season began with concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky directing and serving as soloist for Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and leading the live premiere of a commissioned work by Jonathan Woody. Conductors Laurence Equilbey (Beethoven and Louise Farrenc), Raphaël Pichon (Bach Christmas), and Václav Luks (Beethoven and Joseph Bologne) made their H+H debuts. Aisslinn Nosky and Associate Conductor and Principal Keyboard Ian Watson co-led an All-Bach program of Brandenburg Concertos and Orchestral Suite No. 2 at NEC’s Jordan Hall in February.
Harry Christophers’s final season as Artistic Director included Messiah, a live recording of Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 and Theresienmesse in January, and an emotional Haydn Creation to close out the season.
In addition to the subscription season, H+H made its debut at Carnegie Hall when the H+H Chorus joined with Bernard Labadie, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and La Chapelle de Québec for a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. H+H also performed a chamber Messiah at Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA, led by Ian Watson. In June, H+H made its debuts at the Naumberg Bandshell in New York City’s Central Park and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, MA.

INTRODUCING H+H PLAYS ON
H+H began streaming concerts on a new video platform, H+H Plays On, during our 2021-22 Season, allowing audiences to access the transformative Baroque and Classical music of H+H at any time, from any place.
We presented on-demand concert streams, including a trove of free concerts and educational sessions. We also featured “subscription only” content, including our eight 2021-22 Season concerts. Free digital subscriptions were given to H+H in-person subscribers and donors of $100 or more as a special benefit, ensuring they were able to enjoy the music they love, long past the live performance. All other music lovers were able to subscribe to the digital platform directly.
H+H Plays On has over 3,000 subscribers, and over 11,500 views were enjoyed in the first season by visitors from 65 countries.
You can find H+H Plays On via your browser at www.playson.handelandhaydn.org. You can also find this platform on select apps on your smartphone or smart TV, including iPhone and Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION CONCERT
In 1863, members of the H+H Chorus took part in the joyous celebrations in Boston at the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This season, Resident Conductor of the Chorus Anthony Trecek-King led H+H’s annual performance commemorating this event at Trinity Church, Boston in collaboration with the Museum of African American History. People around the world marked the new year viewing this streaming concert, which included readings by spoken word artist Regie Gibson and music with messages of freedom and hope for the future.
MUSICALLY SPEAKING CONCERT PREVIEWS
This season, H+H introduced a new digital format for learning content related to our subscription programming: Musically Speaking Concert Previews. These free half-hour webinars hosted by Emily Marvosh and Anthony Trecek-King featured programming insights by Historically Informed Performance Fellow Teresa Neff and Q&A discussions with members of the orchestra, chorus, and guest artists.

LANDMARK $10 MILLION GIFT CELEBRATES HARRY CHRISTOPHERS
In November 2021, H+H received a transformative anonymous gift of $10 million in honor of Artistic Director Harry Christophers, to help create the Harry Christophers Fund for Artistic Excellence. H+H announced the gift before the opening performance of Handel’s Messiah at Symphony Hall. At the same time, H+H also named Harry Conductor Laureate, a title that took effect after he concluded his tenure as Artistic Director in May 2022.
The $10 million donation is the largest single gift in H+H history and will have a lasting effect on America’s oldest performing arts organization. The donor said in a statement, “Harry has fulfilled the mission of the Handel and Haydn Society. I wish to ensure that the next artistic director propels the magic, joy, and learning Harry Christophers created to new levels. I want the new artistic director and H+H to ensure it is the best in the U.S. if not the world as to what it does, transforming lives with unsurpassed excellence.”
Harry was appointed Artistic Director at H+H in 2009, and during his tenure, the organization grew to be regarded as one of the finest Baroque and Classical ensembles in the nation. The Harry Christophers Fund extends his extraordinary legacy in perpetuity. The Fund supports conductor and guest artist expenses, H+H Orchestra and Chorus compensation, audio and video recording and distribution, and touring.
The 2021-22 Season featured special highlights as H+H bid Harry a fond farewell after 13 seasons as Artistic Director. The celebration culminated in May with Harry’s final performances of Haydn’s The Creation, Harry throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park, and other memorable gatherings with family and friends. On May 9, H+H held a celebratory gala at Symphony Hall. Neary 400 attendees enjoyed a performance by the H+H Orchestra, Chorus, and Youth Choruses in Harry’s honor.

LEARNING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
H+H YOUTH CHORUSES
One hundred and twenty-eight singers participated in our seven ensembles for young people in grades 2-12. Through HHYC, these singers experience a positive, affirming community where they can develop their vocal and music literacy skills, collaborate in performance, connect with professional artists, and build friendships with role models and peers from throughout the region. Our singers gave a compelling All-HHYC Winter Concert that streamed online and then wowed a packed house at Roxbury Community College’s Media Arts Center with their All-HHYC Spring Concert.
8 2021 + 22 ANNUAL REPORT
HIGH SCHOOL SOLOISTS
H+H supported ten singers on full merit scholarships as High School Soloists this season. In addition to participating in HHYC ensembles and musicianship classes, Soloists receive weekly private voice lessons and group diction classes at the New England Conservatory. This program opens doors for singers to deeply pursue pre-collegiate vocal studies in a supportive environment. We were thrilled to present two High School Soloists’ recitals for audiences at NEC this season and our singers benefited from a compelling masterclass by Indian-American soprano Gitanjali Mathur.
NEW VOICES SUMMER CHORUS
Nineteen singers from the Boston area participated in our New Voices Summer Chorus, in collaboration with the Titi Ta Children’s Chorus in Popayán, Colombia. The students gathered for a mix of in-person outdoor rehearsals and online learning sessions via Zoom, and gave a joint streaming concert of music closely tied to the identities of the ensembles and their homes. The program included introductions to the repertoire by the students, in English and Spanish, and accompaniment on several of the pieces by members of the H+H Orchestra.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS
H+H collaborates with Boston elementary schools to expand access to music education for students during the school day. This program grew dramatically this season! We began a new partnership with the Mason School in Roxbury, welcomed Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester back to the partnership program, and expanded our reach at the Hurley K-8 School in the South End, Michael J. Perkins School in South Boston, and Winship Elementary School in Brighton. Through these partnerships, 785 students who otherwise would have not had music at school experienced the joy of creating music together, learned about other cultures through exploration of musical traditions, developed music literacy skills, and connected with accomplished artists of many genres and time periods. We were thrilled to present end-of-year performances in several schools and host guest musicians so students could engage with practicing, professional artists.
MASSART PROJECT
HAYDN: THE CREATION
H+H continued a partnership with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design this season and delighted in exploring Haydn’s The Creation with the juniors in the MassArt Illustration Department. These students were introduced to the piece by HIP Fellow Teresa Neff and members of the orchestra and then created original illustrations inspired by the music. In the spring, a professional jury reviewed all the artwork created for this project and a dozen works were selected to be framed and exhibited at the Symphony Hall performances.

We are grateful to the members of the 2021–22 Planned Giving Subcommittee: Jane Carlson, chair; Frank Clark; Joe Flynn; Carrie Hammond; Peter Manson; Bonnie Wax; Susan Weatherbie; and John Winkleman.

— H+H Donor
“H+H provides the most consistently satisfying experiences of all the events I attend.”
IN MEMORIAM
Father Thomas W. Buckley (1929–2022)
Father Thomas Buckley was a kind H+H donor and member of our 1815 Society. A native of Abington, “Father Tom” spent his life in the priesthood after attending St. John Seminary. He later served on the faculty of the seminary, and retired from service in 2003.
Terry O. Decima (1943–2022)
Terry Decima was a loyal H+H subscriber, donor, and avid performing arts attendee whose presence in Boston’s concert halls and theaters will be greatly missed. A career musician and educator, Terry lived a life defined by his passion for music. His influence on Boston’s classical music community was profound. He had a five-decade career on the faculty of the New England Conservatory and was on the staff of the vocal program at Tanglewood. He was also head organist at First Parish Church in Weston for more than 50 years.
Martin M. Hale (1941–2022)
Martin Hale was a longtime supporter of H+H and Conductor’s Circle member. Martin and his wife Deborah regularly attended H+H events. Martin had a successful career as an investor, and worked for Hellman Jordan Management in Boston. He was also an avid art collector, reader, and traveler, and served on the board of the MFA Boston.
