DEAR FRIENDS + SUPPORTERS, It is no understatement to say that the 2020–21 Season was unprecedented for H+H and indeed the world. The prolonged pandemic required all of us to be creative and flexible, and many have dealt with personal losses and challenges. Yet through it all, H+H and our musicians persevered, even thrived, thanks to your steadfast support.

With concert halls and schools closed, we doubled down on our mission — to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect us all with our shared humanity — by moving all our activities online. For the first time in our 206-year history, the entire concert season was presented digitally and our education programs were fully virtual. Viewers tuned in from Greater Boston and around the globe. H+H’s reach expanded 10-fold from a typical subscription season, with more than 330,000 people experiencing a streaming concert. Most notably, Handel’s Messiah for Our Time, in partnership with GBH, was a significant achievement and an emotional shared experience.

H+H believes that all people should have access to transformative experiences with music. We are committed to bringing Baroque and Classical music to people in ever more diverse communities across Boston, encouraging their involvement, and being a welcoming and inclusive organization. In 2020–21 we highlighted more artists and composers of color, including the performance of a world premiere by Jonathan Woody and the addition of conductor Anthony Trecek-King to the artistic leadership team.

2020-21 SEASON: UNPRECENDENTED, DIGITAL H+H’s 2020–21 Season became a digital concert season with releases spanning from September 2020 to May 2021.

Following the vision of Artistic Director Harry Christophers, H+H offered four programs recorded at GBH’s Fraser Studio and seven programs recorded at three other venues: St. Cecilia Parish and Symphony Hall in Boston and Cary Hall in Lexington.

H+H orchestra members Aisslinn Nosky, Susanna Ogata, Guy Fishman, Ian Watson, and Emi Ferguson recorded three chamber programs at Fraser Studio, each devoted to a single composer (J.S. Bach, Handel, and Telemann), and were joined by local star soprano Amanda Forsythe for a fourth program of music by Vivaldi. These concerts were released from September 2020 through March 2021.

The H+H Orchestra returned to performing as an ensemble in November 2020 with the recording of Glories of the Baroque at St. Cecilia Parish, led by concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky. Also recorded at St. Cecilia Parish were A Baroque Christmas, led by Associate Conductor Ian Watson in December, and Glories of the Baroque: Vivaldi, led by Nosky in February. Mozart, C.P.E. Bach + Friends was recorded at Cary Hall in Lexington in March (led by Watson).

The following program, also recorded at Cary Hall, included the world premiere of the Suite for Orchestra after the Works of Charles Ignatius Sancho by Brooklyn-based composer Jonathan Woody.

The final two video releases of the season were recorded at Symphony Hall. Nosky directed a program of Mozart’s Serenata notturna and Eine kleine Nachtmusik and then Watson conducted a program of Bologne and Haydn to close the season.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH FOR OUR TIME H+H partnered with GBH on a very special television presentation of an hour-long portion of Handel’s Messiah. With the help of a team of epidemiologists and a brain trust of artistic and production departments on both ends, Handel’s Messiah for Our Time came into existence to allow for a performance for the 167th consecutive year of Handel’s masterwork. The 10-person orchestra, 16-voice chorus, and four guest soloists were recorded separately to ensure the safest environment possible, and through the magic of production, a seamless experience emerged with accompanying visual imagery depicting dramatic scenes of Boston during the pandemic. It all made for a truly compelling, once-in-a-lifetime video experience.

INNOVATIVE DIGITAL OFFERINGS In addition to the digital concert series, H+H produced a number of other digital offerings in 2020–21. During the summer of 2020, H+H released more than 30 videos produced from the homes of H+H musicians. H+H celebrated the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with two specially produced mini-documentaries on the connections between Beethoven and H+H, and re-released archival audio of all nine Beethoven symphonies. H+H also started a new podcast hosted by principal cellist Guy Fishman entitled “Tuning In.”

TUNING IN H+H also started Radio H+H, a 24/7 audio stream offering two channels, one with all H+H recordings, and one with only instrumental music. Two chamber programs were livestreamed, the first from St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, Maine, in July 2020, and then from the Lyman Estate in Waltham in November 2021.

CD RELEASES H+H’s commercial recording releases continued with the 14th and 15th commercial releases under Harry Christophers. Haydn Masses Vol. 2 was released in November 2020 and Mozart Violin Concertos Vol. 1 in February 2021, both on the CORO label.

EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY YOUTH CHORUSES In a year when singing was prohibited in Boston due to public health concerns, the H+H Youth Choruses (HHYC) nevertheless continued to be a source of connection, joy, and musical discovery for 192 young people. The 2020–21 Season was held almost entirely online, with singers gathering via Zoom on Saturdays. Our faculty and students were amazingly resilient throughout this season of singing apart—embracing what can be done remotely and leaning into those possibilities, especially emphasizing small group work, individual vocal development, repertoire study, community building, and engagements with guest artists. Singers in our seven ensembles prepared 26 “virtual choir” recordings that were shared across multiple digital channels throughout the season and showcased in a season finale concert that included the world premiere of Laura Nevitt’s “Hope Is the Thing with Feathers,” commissioned for the occasion by HHYC. All HHYC singers connected with professional H+H musicians this season and collaborations with other choral ensembles also offered opportunities for students to feel part of a wider musical community. The season concluded with an Exploratory Session, when singers had the opportunity to gather for outdoor in-person rehearsals on the lawn at First Church in Roxbury or participate in online classes on a range of special interest topics like songwriting and improvisation.

Messiah Aria Project This season, the Chamber Choir took a deep dive into arias from H+H’s signature work and Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah. These talented young singers were guided by Artistic Director Harry Christophers, Chamber Choir conductor Alyson Greer Espinosa, and a quartet of professional singers from the H+H Chorus who coached them over several weeks of small group rehearsals. The singers recorded the complete arias, which were shared as video compilations accompanied by illustrations created through the MassArt collaboration Project Handel: Messiah.

New Voices Summer Chorus Nurt Villani led a tremendously successful eight-week online series for singers in New Voices (grades 2–4) titled “Songs Inspired by Nature / Canciones Inspiradas en la Naturalez.” On September 5, the students gave a wonderful joint virtual concert of English and Spanish repertoire with the Titi Ta Children’s Choir from Popayán, Colombia.

“Hands down, the best part of the Messiah Aria Project was the opportunity to work with Dr. Zavracky and Ms. Greer. They taught me the meaning behind the words, construction of the aria, and the technical details. Also, I enjoyed collaborating with the other members of the Chamber Choir. Despite the virtual setting, we got to know one another and perform this aria together. H+H’s Chamber Choir has made a deep impact on me and I am forever grateful to have been welcomed in this Society.”

HIGH SCHOOL SOLOISTS

EVERY VOICE

Ten students were selected as High School Soloists this season. The tuition-free High School Soloists program is an opportunity for dedicated and curious singers to immerse themselves in vocal study and deepen their understanding of their instrument in both solo and ensemble settings. In addition to participating in HHYC ensembles and musicianship classes, Soloists receive weekly private voice lessons and group diction classes at the New England Conservatory. In June, the Soloists presented a virtual recital, with each singer performing some of their favorite repertoire accompanied by introductory comments to frame the selections.

H+H continued a partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry and presented our annual Every Voice performance as a streaming concert on November 8. The program celebrated female composers in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Director and countertenor Reginald Mobley, cellist Shirley Hunt, and pianist Julia Carey pre-recorded musical selections at First Church in Roxbury and the program included introductory remarks by Mobley, a Q&A hosted by Emily Marvosh, readings by Boston’s poet laureate Porsha Olayiwola, and “virtual choir” performances by the Youth Choruses Concert Choir and members of the H+H Chorus.

SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

MASSART

H+H collaborates with Boston elementary schools to expand access to music education for students during the school day. This season, H+H teaching artists taught 30 music classes each week for elementary students in three Boston Public Schools: Hurley K–8 School in the South End, Michael J. Perkins School in South Boston, and the Winship School in Brighton.

These classes, though taught virtually most of the year, were sources of great joy and connection and contributed significantly to the social and emotional well-being of students and their academic and artistic growth.

Our ongoing collaboration with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design moved online this season, with H+H Historically Informed Performance Fellow Teresa Neff and members of the Orchestra connecting with MassArt classes via Zoom to explore Handel Messiah together and discuss the piece’s lasting relevance and impact on listeners. MassArt students then created original illustrations inspired by Messiah which were juried by professional artists and shared in a digital gallery.

THE 1815 SOCIETY

The Handel and Haydn Society thanks the following donors for including H+H in their long-term financial and estate plans.

1815 Society Members

During the 2020–21 Season, the 1815 Society continued its steady growth, increasing membership to a total of 127 estate commitments.

Under the leadership of subcommittee chair Jane Carlson, the planned giving program increased its visibility across the breadth of H+H’s activities, and continues to provide surety of support for H+H’s future.

During the 2021 fiscal year, H+H was grateful to receive $85,000 in realized estate gifts.

IN MEMORIAM Willma Davis (1946–2021) Willma Davis was a vice chair of the Handel and Haydn Society Board of Governors for 25 years and touched nearly every aspect of the organization. Among her numerous committee assignments, she chaired the Nominating and Governance Committee, served on the Artistic Director Search Committee, and led important efforts to build and diversify H+H’s board. We are grateful to Willma for her outstanding commitment to H+H, as well as her extraordinary generosity. She was an important leader, and her loss is sorely felt by all who knew her and learned from her.

Beyond her service with H+H, Willma served on the board of the Hyams Foundation and was a member of Womenade Boston. She had a long career in finance and was retired from John Hancock where she had worked for 26 years. She was a graduate of the Boston Public Schools and held advanced degrees from Boston University and Northeastern University.

Howard Fuguet (1937–2021) Howard Fuguet was a member of the H+H Board of Overseers for 17 years. He was an avid fan of H+H and a generous donor. In fact, his very first date with his future wife Darcy was our Messiah in 1957. They attended Messiah every single year thereafter. In 2017, H+H honored Howard and Darcy as they celebrated their 60th year attending Messiah.

Howard was a partner with Ropes & Gray from 1971 until his retirement in 2004, and he continued of counsel for years beyond that. He was a corporate and antitrust partner concentrating in corporate representation of public companies, and industry corporate mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. He also concentrated on antitrust matters, pricing, distribution, and marketing matters, and the representation of clients before the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.
