“We aim to create a live experience where the music can be felt throughout the hall. H+H is all about connections, among the musicians and between us and the audience. Through each performance, we strive to bring the music to life and make it as meaningful as possible for every audience member.” — AISSLINN NOSKY, H+H CONCERTMASTER

2018 + 19 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends and Supporters, If we had to sum up the Handel and Haydn Society’s past year in just one word, it would have to be “Wow!” That simple, yet profound exclamation by a young boy at our season finale concert caught the world’s attention, and proved that not only can music transform a life, but that live classical concerts should be welcoming to all. How can we make sure moments like these keep happening? It is through the support of our donors. Because of the generosity of so many, over the past year H+H was able to: + Give joyous, uplifting performances of the masterpieces of music at Symphony Hall and beyond, starring one of the nation’s truly great choruses and period instrument orchestras; + Inspire the next generation with the joy of music through our Youth Choruses, our music literacy programs in Boston public schools, and our collaborative concerts with area high school choirs; + Share our music with a broader audience, from free concerts in Boston area community centers, to touring performances in New England, New York, and beyond, to recordings, broadcasts, and webcasts that bring the music of H+H to the world. In 2018-19, under our amazing Artistic Director Harry Christophers, H+H achieved new heights of artistic accomplishment, evidenced by critical acclaim, growing community support, and an increased national presence. We are reaching more people than ever before. Over the past two seasons, H+H’s paid attendance has grown 29%, paced by a remarkable 26% increase in subscriptions. In the spring we returned to New York with a superb Dido and Aeneas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and performances at the Morgan Library and Museum, sent our Youth Chorus kids on a life-changing tour to Ireland, and enjoyed an outstanding Gala.
W. Carl Kester
CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS
Our Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program is thriving. The impact of this work is significant; many of the students we reach do not otherwise have access to in-school music programs. Because of Karen and George’s generosity, and gifts from so many of you, this program and our other Education and Community Engagement initiatives have flourished. H+H is committed to bringing its music and resources directly to local populations with limited arts access, and we continue to partner with many local organizations to bring our music out of the concert hall and into the communities around us. H+H extends heartfelt thanks to our patrons and donors. Your generosity was crucial in making this year a success. We look forward to sharing many special moments together in the year to come.

2018-19 SEASON A DELIGHT FOR THE SENSES
People who attended H+H concerts in 2018-19 have called the experience “truly joyful,” “fresh and fun,” and “thrilling.” Harry Christophers opened the season with a Bach extravaganza of concertos and choral works and followed that program with Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 and Harmoniemesse (recorded live for commercial release), a semi-staging of Purcell’s brilliant opera Dido and Aeneas directed by Aidan Lang of the Welsh National Opera, and to end the season a smartly crafted program pairing Mozart’s Requiem with works that inspired him by Allegri and J.S. Bach. Richard Egarr conducted H+H’s first performance of Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 since 1865, Bernard Labadie led three rousing renditions of Handel’s Messiah, and Matthew Halls brought the audience to its feet after a raucous Beethoven’s Fifth. H+H showcased its own with concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky directing a program of Italian Baroque showpieces and Associate Conductor Ian Watson rang in the holiday season with Baroque holiday gems. The 2018-19 Season also featured numerous performances beyond Boston, including the Morgan Library in New York; the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT; Sanibel (FL) Music Festival; and the Arizona Early Music Society in Tucson.
WOW, WHAT A YEAR! Our Sunday, May 5 concert of Mozart’s Requiem has become known as “The ‘Wow’ Concert,” for an uninhibited exclamation from 9 year-old Ronan Mattin. That single word truly went viral, reaching more than 70 million people worldwide with the joy, wonder, and awe contained in Ronan’s single, delighted exclamation. The story was shared by media including CBS Evening News and USA Today. Ronan’s “Wow” was a refreshingly unfiltered, inspiring reminder of the magic of music.

DIDO AT THE TEMPLE OF DENDUR
NEW H+H RECORDING
In March 2019, H+H returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a performance of Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas in the glorious Temple of Dendur. In addition to the sold-out live performance, more than 22,000 people viewed a stream of the performance on the museum’s Facebook Live page. The concert was made possible through the generosity of individual donors, one of whom remarked, “H+H is a world-class organization, and I am happy that my gift made it possible for them to present their work on the national stage.”
With the support of the Peacewoods Charitable Fund and Peter Manson and Peter Durfee, H+H continued the succession of critically-acclaimed recordings for the CORO label with the release, in January 2018, of Haydn Symphonies Nos. 49 and 87 and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.

EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT H+H believes that all people should have access, at an early age, to transformative experiences with music, and that these experiences can take place anywhere – from Symphony Hall to neighborhood venues and schools.
HIGH SCHOOL SOLOISTS
VOCAL ARTS PROGRAM This season 212 students from more than 60 communities came together for weekly choral rehearsals and musicianship classes in H+H’s Vocal Arts Program (VAP). The six VAP ensembles gave 28 performances, including seven appearances in collaboration with the H+H Orchestra and Chorus highlighted by Mozart’s Requiem at Symphony Hall.
”
Performances also brought the VAP ensembles to venues throughout the region including the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, NEC’s Jordan Hall, Faneuil Hall, Newbridge on the Charles, and Boston Children’s Museum, and included collaborations with ensembles ranging from the Texas Boys Choir to The Women’s Chorus of the Eureka Ensemble. The VAP season concluded with a week-long concert tour of Ireland.
“In the last six years, I’ve grown a lot as a person. H+H has been this one constant, everyone’s so committed to our repertoire, and to the whole community.”
For students who show great commitment to their vocal development and the desire for further musical study, H+H partners with the New England Conservatory to offer the highly-selective High School Soloists program. The ten young artists in this ensemble receive merit scholarships for their VAP ensemble participation and receive weekly voice lessons, diction classes, and numerous recital and masterclass opportunities. “H+H has redoubled its efforts in reaching out to diverse communities throughout Greater Boston. In my role as Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee I have been delighted to join with other supporters in identifying new audiences and concertgoers who can enjoy choral and orchestral music at H+H concerts and programs. Also, it is especially gratifying to note that H+H is increasingly involving artists of color in its concerts.” — James Hoyte Member, H+H Board of Governors, Chair of Diversity + Inclusion Committee
— Dina, Young Women’s Chorus BOSTON SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS COLLABORATIVE YOUTH CONCERTS Every season for 32 years, H+H has brought together public high school choirs to study Baroque and Classical repertoire and perform with their peers, professional soloists, and the H+H Orchestra. This season, Emily Isaacson led students from Boston, Kingston, Lawrence, Lynn, Norwell, Wellesley, and Yarmouth in performances of Handel’s Coronation Anthems.
”
Across the city of Boston, H+H teaching artists engage elementary school students in building their musical skills and fostering their creativity and self-expression through weekly in-school music instruction that emphasizes the development of the singing voice. This season, we continued partnerships with the Sarah Greenwood K-8 School in Dorchester, the John F. Kennedy School in Jamaica Plain, and Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester, and began a new partnership with the F. Lyman Winship School in Brighton.

EVERY VOICE
NIGRA SUM SED FORMOSA
This season our annual Every Voice concert raised voices from the LGBTQIA and Latinx communities and those of veterans and people impacted by war. H+H again collaborated with the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry, and added new partners, Union United Methodist Church and Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, to present these free performances led by Reginald Mobley in both Roxbury and the South End on November 3 and 4.
On April 27, H+H collaborated with Castle of Our Skins to present a free concert titled Nigra Sum Sed Formosa - I Am Black But Beautiful at Roxbury Community College’s Media Arts Center. The concert celebrated the work of black composers across two centuries and the performers included members of the H+H Chorus under the direction of Reginald Mobley, our VAP Concert Choir, the Castle of Our Skins string quartet, and Marlon Carey, a spoken word artist. L’Merchie Frazier, Director of Education and Interpretation at the Museum of African American History, gave a preconcert talk open to all attendees, which was part of ArtWeek. The centerpiece of the program was the world premiere of Nigra Sum Sed Formosa, a fantasia on microaggressions, by Jonathan Woody. Over 400 people attended the concert.
FIRST NIGHT JUBILEE CONCERT H+H returned to Trinity Church in Copley Square for our seventh annual Jubilee Day Concert presented in partnership with the Museum of African American History on New Year’s Eve. Scott Allen Jarrett led members of the H+H Orchestra and Chorus in the free performance that celebrated the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, remembered the work of abolitionists in Boston, and called for the more than 1,200 people in attendance to continue to work for justice and peace.
MASSART PARTNERSHIP Throughout the season, H+H partnered with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, working with the junior class illustration students to create works of original art in response to Mozart’s Requiem. In April, a professional jury including Harry Christophers and MassArt President David Nelson selected 12 of the more than 50 pieces created this year to be displayed at the Requiem performances at Symphony Hall.
TICKET EQUITY PROGRAMS H+H welcomed 3,067 people to concerts via the Heartstrings ticket equity program this season. This initiative makes H+H’s inspiring performances accessible to students and low-income individuals through free and discounted tickets. H+H is also a founding participant in the Card to Culture program, a collaboration among the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and many of the Commonwealth’s cultural institutions, which offers discounted concert tickets for individuals holding EBT cards.

CHALLENGE FOR EXCELLENCE FORTIFIES H+H AND NEW INITIATIVES
When the H+H Board embarked on the important work to develop a new strategic plan, they did so knowing there would be significant growth for the institution’s future. Their first task was to review and reaffirm our mission: to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect all of us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music. Several new initiatives were carefully planned to underscore the fundamental direction of the institution – initiatives which required added support as H+H increased its creative, human, and financial resources. A core group of Board members came together to fund a challenge pool of $1 million to inspire others to contribute to secure the growth of H+H during the next several years. Some specific highlights are: + Increase H+H’s national profile through performances at major national venues in New York City, throughout the Northeast, and beyond + Increase the diversity of communities where we present our concerts and programs + Deepen our partnerships with Boston Public Schools and strengthen our H+H youth choruses + Build our staff capacity to manage growth in programming The Board has made great progress with its Challenge for Excellence fundraising, and many other donors have responded, raising $1,925,000 toward the goal of $2 million. Some funds have already been invested, in concerts in New York City, expansion of education and learning programs, expanded marketing, and implementation of a new customer relations database system. We are confident that the $75,000 yet to raise by the December 2019 deadline will be achieved on time, and perhaps, over goal. Our special thanks go out to everyone who participated, and especially the original eight board members who stepped up to “challenge the very best in us to pledge support over and above our annual gifts to H+H.” Thank you Amy Anthony, Julie Cox, Willma Davis, Carl Kester, Michael Scott Morton, Rob Shapiro, David Weaver, and Kathy Weld.

”
When I founded the Ramsey McCluskey Family Foundation 20 years ago, I knew that a major focus of our giving would be in arts education because that was something that was so important to me growing up. If my school had not offered free instrumental music lessons, I would have missed out on some of the best and happiest experiences in my life to date. Our Foundation’s mission of supporting arts education projects aligns so well with the work that the Handel and Haydn Society is doing in Boston Public Schools to provide engaging, inclusive, and accessible vocal music education to thousands of students every year.

H+H has been enriching our lives since we attended our first performance over 30 years ago, filling our ears, hearts, and spirits with beautiful music. Subscribing year after year is a gift we have given to ourselves. Remembering H+H in our estate plans is our gift to future audiences, and our thank you to the Society for the joy they have given us. — Peggy Sagan and Mike Simons

TRIBUTES
MIGUEL CANIZARES (1966-2019) AMY ANTHONY (1944-2018) Amy Anthony, groundbreaking affordable housing leader in Massachusetts and beyond, was a member of the H+H Board of Governors for 16 years. As chair of the Bicentennial Committee, Amy led the two-year celebration to commemorate H+H’s impressive 200-year history. We are grateful to Amy for her outstanding commitment to H+H, as well as her extraordinary generosity to our Instrumental Voices capital campaign and Challenge for Excellence. We also recognize Amy for her important work as one of the nation’s foremost experts in affordable housing policy. She was active in the industry for more than 30 years, and was founder and former President and CEO of Preservation of Affordable Housing, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and steward affordable rental housing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.
Miguel Canizares was a classical music enthusiast and supporter, and had served on H+H’s Board of Governors since 2015. He was very active on the Finance and Audit Committee, Major Gifts Task Force, and Strategic Planning Task Force. Born and raised in Mexico, Miguel came to Massachusetts for college, attending Clark University and then earning an MBA from Babson College. For the past 21 years, Miguel worked for Fidelity Investments, most recently serving as a Vice President. His career at Fidelity fed his love for travel, as he had the opportunity to visit over 40 countries for work during his life. He previously worked for Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. and The Boston Company, and served on the board of directors for the Waldorf School in Lexington. Miguel was a truly inspiring person who touched all of us at H+H with his generous spirit. He will especially be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, courage, and devotion to family.
