INSTRUMENTAL VOICES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN + 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

1

Ian Watson conducts H+H in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Copley Square, July 2015

“We feel a spark of insight and a lifting of the spirit in Handel and Haydn Society performances. The same electric energy flows to young performers and audiences from the education programs. This is powerful artistry. It changes the way we understand the world and ourselves.” - Rob Shapiro, Board of Governors

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

D

ear friends and supporters,

As I reflect on my first year as Chairman of the Board of the Handel and Haydn Society, I am struck by how careful planning and enthusiastic participation over the past five years from you, our patrons, donors, board, musicians, staff, and volunteers has come to fruition this year, transforming our organization. Five years ago, we launched an ambitious effort to celebrate our history and provide a sound financial base for our organization. This report provides testament to the hard work and true excellence we sustained these past several years as well as to the incredible achievements made during the 2015-2016 Season.

We wanted to increase the reach and impact of our Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, which creates opportunities throughout Greater Boston for more than 10,000 students, many of whom do not have access to music programs. Because of Karen Levy’s generosity and gifts from so many of you, we achieved this goal.

201st Season. Artistically, we have never been stronger, and there were so many incredible concerts at Symphony Hall and elsewhere. On the administrative side, we welcomed David Snead as President and CEO in October 2015. His energy and insight are positioning H+H among the top musical organizations in the country.

Through the dedication of campaign co-chairs Todd Estabrook, Bob Scott, and Kathy Weld, and due to the generous response from supporters like you, we exceeded our original $12 million campaign goal, reaching $13.5 million. Thank you! When we began our campaign in 2012, we envisioned bolstering our endowment to help sustain key strategic initiatives, program expansion, and artistic innovation and excellence. Today, the endowment is in a position to do this.

Endowed funds also sustain our artistic excellence. I want to especially acknowledge the leadership of Wat Tyler, a longstanding member of our board whom we lost this spring, and his wife Jane, for their early and generous support by endowing our chorus and catalyzing the campaign. Wat’s passion for H+H was inspiring and his legacy will live on through his philanthropy.

I want to thank Nick Gleysteen, board chair from 2010-2015, to whom much credit is due for our extraordinary success. The entire H+H orchestra and chorus, staff and volunteers, and each and every board member should take great pride in their roles as well.

At the same time we were completing our campaign, H+H moved boldly forward with a memorable

Most of all, I want to thank you, our patrons and donors, for your generosity and loyalty. You played a pivotal role in making our campaign, as well as this season, a success. Your gifts will be well stewarded, and

we will strive to make you proud of your association with H+H. Please let us know how we are doing and challenge us to achieve greater heights. Together we will take the Handel and Haydn Society to new levels of artistic and educational excellence! Sincerely yours,

W. Carl Kester Chairman, Board of Governors

For nearly four years, Bob Scott, Kathy Weld, and Todd Estabrook, all members of the H+H Board of Governors, steered the Instrumental Voices Capital Campaign through its successful completion.

Q+A WITH THE CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIRS What does the successful completion of the campaign mean for H+H? H+H has arrived as a major player on both the national and world stages. With the increased press coverage throughout this campaign we achieved greater recognition for our exceptional music making, and we now have an even stronger reputation as a leader in historically informed performance. We tripled the size of H+H’s endowment and can attract and retain the best artistic talent and extend the breadth of our education programming. We are also doing more touring and recording and exploring different formats for bringing our music to new generations of listeners. The more people who can grow to love Baroque and Classical music the better! - Kathy Weld

This was the first time H+H attempted a fundraising effort of this size and scope. How were we able to meet, and exceed, our goals? H+H has enjoyed tremendous artistic success in recent years. We have had an enthusiastic response from audiences, on tour and “at home” in Boston. Our musicians, instrumental and vocal, are of the very highest quality. Harry Christophers and our guest conductors perform a wonderful, carefully planned series of concerts that are entertaining, educational, emotional, and appropriately challenging. People like to support a successful organization. In addition, we have a wonderfully committed and strong board. Our audiences are diverse and the average age of our attendees is lower than that of most comparable organizations. With support from others in the Boston community, we have been able to complete the campaign, exceed our objective comfortably, and underpin the financial structure of H+H.

We named the campaign Instrumental Voices. Were there in fact “instrumental voices” for this effort? Many! Our volunteers come to mind first. We had a great group of dedicated H+H supporters and board members who gave personally, and then took time to attend meetings, talk with new donors, and tell our story to others throughout the community. Local and national foundations were key to our success at a midpoint in the campaign when we were able to leverage a challenge grant to “raise the bar.” Most of all, it was our staff, chorus, orchestra, and Artistic Director Harry Christophers who truly gave “voice” to the campaign. Whenever we tired, or needed to be reminded of our mission, we only had to take in the next concert for a renewed sense of purpose. - Todd Estabrook

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS THE HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE GENEROUS DONORS TO THE INSTRUMENTAL VOICES CAMPAIGN.

John and Susan Morris, campaign donors, have been consistently impressed with how H+H raises the level of excellence with each performance. This motivated them to learn about the organization, how H+H builds community around the music, and how to support H+H. John and Susan said, “To feel welcomed as part of that community has been an unexpected pleasure and adds a very social component of the overall H+H experience that has made it unique in our lives.”

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

“To see a couple of my students who are extremely shy and introverted stand in front of 20-25 people and perform was very impressive. To also see a struggling reader who is reading significantly below grade level participate in The Soup Opera with such confidence was inspiring; the play required him to read words that were above his reading level and he did so flawlessly because he was invested and wanted to perform” – Mr. Chery, Grade 2 teacher at Michael J. Perkins Elementary School

KAREN LEVY In 2012, as H+H approached the Bicentennial, Karen Levy, a longtime member of the Board of Governors, made one of the first gifts to the campaign. At $1 million, Karen’s gift was among the largest in H+H’s history. Karen’s milestone gift to permanently endow the education program positioned the campaign for success and enabled H+H to expand its education programming. Each year, the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, established in 1985, reaches more than 10,000 students in Eastern Massachusetts through public school visits, chorus partnerships, in-school music instruction, and the Vocal Arts Program which includes six youth choruses. With Karen’s campaign support, H+H established music literacy classes in Boston Public Schools with little or no music education, ensuring that music is accessible to all. Karen’s generosity will have a tremendous impact on the education program for many years to come.

MARIE-HÉLÈNE BERNARD ENDOWED FUND FOR EXCELLENCE During her eight years as Executive Director and CEO of the Handel and Haydn Society, Marie-Hélène Bernard provided vision and leadership through the celebration of H+H’s 200th anniversary in 2015. During her tenure, H+H established itself as a national player in early music and engaged with Boston communities by establishing diverse partnerships and education programs. H+H experienced substantial audience growth and diversification due to Marie-Hélène’s extraordinary vision and tenacity. She oversaw one international tour, two domestic tours, regular local and national broadcasts, and the release of eight recordings. In the spring of 2015 “MH” (as she is known by her staff and colleagues) accepted a new appointment as President and CEO of the St. Louis Symphony. To honor her dedication and service to H+H, the board voted to establish an endowed fund as a tribute. The Marie-Hélène Bernard Fund provides a platform for the current CEO to continue projects that MH championed, with an emphasis on artistic and organizational excellence, community involvement and education, as well as the exploration of new initiatives and opportunities.

THREE “INSTRUMENTAL VOICES” Willma Davis, member of the Board of Governors, was introduced to H+H 20 years ago by a colleague. She was impressed by the musical and education programming. Having grown up near Symphony Hall, Willma was exposed to music at an early age. As a retired Senior Managing Director for John Hancock, Willma knows the impact the campaign will have on H+H’s future. She says, “A well run, fiscally responsible organization like H+H needs an endowment to provide resources for new programs and a cushion in challenging times.” H+H is grateful for Willma’s generous donation in honor of her mother, Alberta Davis. One of H+H’s close friends and exemplary donors, Board of Governors Vice Chair Julie Cox, brings a deep love of the music, keen analytical and financial skills, and a passion for community service. Her generous campaign gift to support the endowment will help ensure that H+H can continue to thrive for many years to come. “I believe endowments are set up to benefit current and future generations,” says Julie. “These funds can ensure that H+H carries on beyond our lifetime.” Julie strongly believes in the artistic merit of H+H. “The music is so energetic and full of life, it takes you beyond yourself and is good for the soul.” Board of Governors Finance Committee Chair David Elsbree was introduced to classical music by his parents on phonograph records as a child. When he and his wife, Lorraine Gilmore, first came to H+H for Messiah they were so impressed that they soon became subscribers. As campaign donors, David and Lorraine were inspired by other wonderful donors and all the great things happening at the organization. David says, “I believe that H+H is at one of the most significant moments in its history. This is a very exciting time to be a part of H+H.” 13

BICENTENNIAL: 200 YEARS OF BRINGING MUSIC TO LIFE, 1815-2015

H

+H reached the 200th

anniversary of its founding in 2015. Festivities marking the occasion were highlights of the past two seasons.

More than 6,000 people heard the Orchestra and Chorus perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under the direction of Ian Watson outside in Copley Square on Sunday, July 26, 2015. The free concert began with a performance by students in the Vocal Arts Program.

“The H+H Bicentennial provided an exciting opportunity to broaden awareness throughout the Boston community about H+H’s longstanding dedication to sharing music through performances and education. The celebration brought Baroque and Classical music to diverse audiences, including families and students throughout the city.” - Amy Anthony, Chair, Bicentennial Committee

KING’S CHAPEL BICENTENNIAL CONCERT BICENTENNIAL CONCERT SUPPORTERS

THE BICENTENNIAL EXHIBITION (March – September 2015) at the Boston Public Library featured important objects, facsimiles, and items from the archival collection of H+H as well as interactive listening stations where visitors could hear music important to H+H’s history, compare the sound of period and modern instruments, and listen to the “Hallelujah” chorus using the instrumentation and voicing heard at the first H+H concert in 1815. More than 86,000 people from at least 114 countries visited the exhibition while it was on display. In conjunction with the exhibition, H+H performed on the BPL’s Concerts in the Courtyard series and gave pop-up concerts in venues along the Freedom Trail throughout the summer.

INSPIRING ARTISTRY “Today’s H+H is among the best ensembles in the world. We are able to give our audiences a more powerful, compelling, and inspiring musical experience than ever before. Thank you to all the donors who help make this excellence possible.” - Harry Christophers, Artistic Director

F

or more than two centuries, the Handel and Haydn Society has distinguished itself as one of the world’s preeminent music ensembles. From the dedication of our late Conductor Laureate Christopher Hogwood, who transformed H+H into a period instrument orchestra using historically informed performance techniques, to the passionate and expressive partnership of current Artistic Director Harry Christophers and Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky, H+H exhibits the highest standards of artistic excellence at every performance.

Harry Christophers brings expertise and an unmatched passion for the music, and under his direction, the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus have achieved new artistic heights. Since his appointment as Artistic Director in 2008, Christophers and H+H have embarked on an ambitious artistic journey beyond the organization’s 200th anniversary with a showcase of works premiered in the US by H+H since 1815, broad education programming, community engagement activities and partnerships, and the release of a series of recordings on the CORO label.

RECENT H+H RECORDINGS

“There is a magic moment in every H+H concert when the performance transcends the sum of its parts and something truly inspiring happens, something just a little different from the way we rehearsed it, when everyone on stage makes a decision at the same second, moving like a school of fish. Even after seven years as a member of H+H’s chorus, it still makes my heart flip every time.” - Emily Marvosh, Alto

“Our adaptability as an ensemble and our wide-ranging repertoire can ensure that listeners will be enlightened, entertained, and moved. Being a member of the Handel and Haydn Society gives me a great deal of pride – pride in our storied past, pride in my colleagues for their ability and their spirit, pride in the role we play in our city, and pride for our future.” - Guy Fishman, Principal Cello

Longtime Board member Winifred Li and her husband, Bill Oliver, have been attending H+H for more than 20 years. Through their commitment to support H+H’s recording projects, Winifred and Bill are enabling H+H to reach a broader audience and grow its reputation outside of Boston.

2015-2016 SEASON: MUSIC TO TRANSCEND THE CENTURIES “A confluence of superb conducting, splendid singing, and orchestral distinction made it the finest performance of ‘Messiah’ in years … Both the standing ovations and shouts from the audience were the loudest I’ve heard in many years.” - NewBostonPost, Dec. 1, 2015

“It would be hard to imagine a more original Mozart Requiem, or a better one.” - The Boston Globe, Oct. 3, 2015

T

he 2015-2016 Season opened with Mozart’s Requiem and concluded with Handel’s towering Saul. In addition to subscription concerts at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and Sanders Theatre, H+H appeared at the Boston Athenæum, in Westport, MA, and continued its multi-year partnership with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with performances of J.S. Bach’s complete Brandenburg Concer-

tos and an instrumental program of Mendelssohn. The ensemble performed regularly on the King’s Chapel recital series and also gave concerts at the Museum of African American History’s African Meeting House and the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center. Harry Christophers took the H+H Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus on tour to California in Oc-

tober 2015. The program of Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel was performed in Aliso Viejo, Northridge, Davis, and Stanford. Ian Watson led a small group of players and singers in Bach cantatas at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in September 2015, and Harry Christophers and the ensemble performed in Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC in February 2016.

2015-2016 GUEST ARTISTS AND SOLOISTS

Project Handel: Saul H+H was proud to continue a creative partnership with Massachusetts College of Art and Design this season. Under the instruction of MassArt faculty members, junior class students in the Illustration Department created works of art inspired by Handel’s Saul. A jury selected 12 works to be displayed at Symphony Hall during the H+H performances of Saul. “The sharp and jagged sounds of the instruments along with the overall dramatic tone really appealed to me. This inspired the creation of King Saul’s royal portrait, illustrating the dark and evil path of his envy.” – Alyssa Carvara, MassArt student

H+H promoted Ian Watson (above left) to Associate Conductor and appointed Scott Allen Jarrett as Resident Conductor, Chorus. Both will serve as valuable advisers to Harry Christophers on artistic matters going forward.

EDUCATION: ENGAGING HEARTS AND MINDS

H

+H is deeply committed to educating people of all ages in order to strengthen the community and develop future generations of Baroque and Classical music audiences and performers. In 2015-2016 the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program provided music education and vocal training to more than 10,000 students of all ages.

20

Music Classes in Boston Schools H+H continued its commitment to making music education accessible to students in the Boston schools, serving 405 students with its in-school music programs at the Michael J. Perkins Elementary School in South Boston, the John F. Kennedy School in Jamaica Plain (expanded this year to include grade 3), and Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester. H+H also provided 54 students at the Joseph E. Lee School in Dorchester with after-school music enrichment classes. Vocal Quartet In-School Programs The Vocal Quartet presented 62 free, interactive performances of Voices of America to 48 public schools in the Greater Boston area, reaching more than 9,000 students. In addition, the Quartet performed at WGBH’s annual Classical Cartoon Festival at Symphony Hall, the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, and various Boston Public Library branches.

Collaborative Youth Concerts This season, 412 student singers from Boston Arts Academy, Boston Latin School, Lawrence High School, Lunenburg High School, Lynn Classical and English High Schools, Marlborough High School, and Peabody High School gave performances of Mozart and Handel with the H+H Vocal Quartet and Period Instrument Orchestra under the direction of guest conductor Andrew Clark. The concerts took place in February at Lawrence High School, Boston Latin School, and Whitman Middle School in Marlborough. In addition, 75 young singers opened the February H+H subscription concerts at Symphony Hall.

“Many of the larger towns in Northern Europe have outstanding choirs made up of young men, some such groups even enjoying a worldwide reputation. Boston should have one as well! The Handel and Haydn Society, with its outstanding VAP program including its Young Men’s Chorus already in place, is in an excellent position to produce one, an effort I enthusiastically support!” - Lucas Wegmann Vocal Arts Program (VAP) VAP provides young people from diverse backgrounds with opportunities to develop skills and nurture an enduring love of music through the power of their own voices. H+H enrolled 177 students during the 2015-2016 Season with notable increases in H+H Singers, Youth Chorus, and the Young Men’s Chorus. This season was also marked by the founding of the new Concert Choir for middle school students. Twelve students were enrolled in the High School Soloists, all of whom also partici-

Highlights of the VAP season included student performances at Springhouse Senior Living Center in Jamaica Plain, Boston Children’s Museum, St. Paul’s Parish in Cambridge, and on the Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall stage with H+H. The Young Men’s Chorus performed at a Providence Bruins game. VAP choirs partnered with the Cape Cod Children’s Chorus, Metropolitan Chorale, and Heritage Chorale for special concerts.

VAP choruses performed with the H+H Chorus and members of the Orchestra at the festive Holiday Sing at Faneuil Hall.

HEARST FOUNDATION GRANT The Hearst Foundation identifies and funds outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the U.S. have the opportunity to build healthy, productive, and inspiring lives. This year, The Hearst Foundation is supporting H+H’s Vocal Arts Program (VAP), which makes vocal arts training accessible to all students in Greater Boston through financial aid and targeted outreach to underserved communities. As this pioneering program grows and continues to evolve, funding from Hearst will support H+H’s efforts to provide financial aid, ensuring that VAP is financially accessible to all students; increase VAP’s level of diverse participants; and sustain high-quality vocal arts programming that keeps pace with student needs.

Scholarship Awards The Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award went to VAP senior Hannah Klein, who is attending the Curtis Institute of Music majoring in vocal performance and opera. The Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence was presented to Jessica Toupin, who is currently at UMASS/ Amherst Commonwealth College studying vocal performance and mathematics. Precious Perez was awarded the Evangelyna Etienne Award; she will be attending the Berklee College of Music as a music education and voice major. Arpita Joyce was recognized with a VAP Outstanding Achievement Award; she plans to pursue a career in music therapy.

“H+H’s Vocal Arts Program has shaped my high school years and paved the way for what I want to pursue in the future. In the Young Women’s Chorus, I discovered the power of choral music and thought to myself, ‘This is it – I want to have a career in the world of music.’” - Jessica Toupin, Young Women’s Chorus

1815 SOCIETY APPRECIATION LUNCHEON: MAY 2016

H+H held the second annual 1815 Society Appreciation Luncheon to thank those who have included H+H in their estate plans. The event, attended by nearly 50 people, was generously hosted by Nancy and Rob Bradley and Kathy and Wally Weld. Members of the 1815 Society, along with those interested in joining, gathered at The Country Club in Brookline to hear a brief musical program. H+H Planned Giving Committee members Mary Nada and Peter Manson recognized new members with a special commemorative lapel pin.

“Under our eyes and ears, Handel and Haydn has become a worldclass organization, as good as anything in the world. We have made a provision in our will and established a Charitable Gift Annuity with H+H to ensure that this tradition of excellence continues for future generations.” - Art and Elaine Robins

TRIBUTES

WAT H. TYLER JR.

(1937-2016) Wat Tyler, businessman and philanthropist, was a Vice Chair of the H+H Board of Governors, having served for 20 years and chaired the Development Committee. He was an original founder of H+H’s Instrumental Voices Capital Campaign, where he and his wife Jane established a permanent endowment for the H+H Chorus. H+H is extremely grateful for the service and generosity of Wat, Jane, and the Tyler family.

FAY MARTIN CHANDLER

(1923-2015) Fay Chandler, artist and philanthropist, rarely missed an H+H concert at Symphony Hall. She always came on Sundays and sat in the front row of the balcony. She gave generously throughout her life to support our music and help make it available to school children in Boston. In her estate planning, she gave consideration to H+H and her gentle hand is still felt today.

ROY A. HAMMER

(1934-2016) Roy Hammer served on the H+H board for 25 years, and his keen financial and legal advice served the organization well. Roy practiced law in Boston for nearly 50 years at Hemenway & Barnes, focusing on corporate law, estate planning, and administration of trusts and estates.
