Coincidences fill our daily life, they amaze us, sometimes upset our plans or change our lives.

But often, we insist on ignoring them.

A few days ago, bombed by media inputs, I was reflecting about the use (and abuse) of the word "outdoor". About the evolution of a market that increasingly combines fashion, lifestyle and technical aspects.

About the growth of festivals and citizen events dedicated to sports that have nature as their field of action. About the fact that now these activities have become an always less marginal economic resource for territories that have a heritage to be valued and proposed. Often in an environment not structured to accommodate large numbers of people and that must be set in an essential way, taking into consideration its fragility. Now the “living in a different way", the "moving into the open air" have become a necessity that involve large parts of the population, on every social level. Just think about the automotive sector, now studded with acronyms like all space, active tourer or cross country. We are increasingly creating an extremely functional and prepared situation. And there’s no more that typical charm of mystery. No more that simple unexpected.

You might say: and what does coincidences have to do with it? It is precisely with these thoughts in mind, sitting on a train, that I came across a conversation between Walter Bonatti and the climber/writer Silvia Metzeltin. These words are coming from 30 years ago, and you can find them at the end of this magazine.

Take that text, and try replacing the word "adventure" with "outdoor". I do not believe in meaningless coincidences. I think that these are messages, indications linked to the aspects of our daily life that deserve a closer look.

BURTON AND NITRO IN THE EUROPEAN OUTDOOR GROUP Burton and Nitro, two well-known names in the snowboarding world, have joined the European Outdoor Group. Their entry into the EOG, as the first active members exclusively in the field of

board sports, opens a new reality and highlights a relationship of synergy with the traditional outdoor industry. "The EOG is pleased to welcome Burton and Nitro as members," said Mark Held, EOG general secretary. "This expansion is a clear reflection of the evolution of the term outdoor".

Salomon is also in the process of adding the snowboard category to its current membership status.

ADIDAS RENEWS THE MANAGEMENT FOR WESTERN EUROPE The activity of the Adidas group had a slowdown in the second quarter of 2018. It also seems to have been greater than expected, with a contraction in sales of 0.1%. The colossus of Herzogenau-

rach reacted to the stagnation of economic data nominating Arthur Hoeld as new the Managing

Director Western Europe. The 48 years old German man, leader of Adidas Originals since 2011 and already responsible for the strategy and development of the Adidas brand globally, is replacing

Alain Pourcelot, who has taken over the role of Director of the Training Unit. At the same time, Guillaume de Montplanet has been promoted to Senior Vice President for Western Europe.

RAIDLIGHT FOOTWEAR COLLECTION In a press conference held in Chamonix Mont Blanc during UTMB, Raidlight presented a preview of its new collection of trail running shoes. It was the same Benoit Laval, pioneer of off-road running and founder of the brand, to illustrate the 4 models for men and women developed in Montebelluna, in the R&D footwear facility of the Rossignol Group: Revolutiv (for the most difficult conditions), Responsive XP (for fast routes), Responsive Ultra (ultra comfort, ultra performance) and Responsive Dynamic (aggressive, and not just in the look). A S I C S S U P P O R T S 5 S TA R T U P S W I T H T H E T E N K A N -T E N PROGRAM Five start ups in the sport and wellness sector have been selected by ASICS for the Tenkan-Ten

program, a Japanese expression that means "turning point". The aim is to help those who work in

the innovation of products and services to grow so these companies will work, until January 2019, at the ASICS Innovation Center in Barcelona. Each of them received a financial support of € 30,000

to develop their project, as well as the possibility to communicate directly with the ASICS executives. The five start ups are: Runnin’ City (France), Curv (Canada), A-Champs (USA), Entrenarme (Spain) and Pyrates (Switzerland).

At the World Water Congress 2018 in Tokyo, ECCO Leather presented a new technology designed to revolutionize the whole industry. The impact that the mineral water industry has on our planet is not negligible. Just in Italy, 12.5 billion liters of water are bottled each year, 81% of them are sold in polyethylene containers. These numbers require the production of 330 thousand tons of PET. To produce 1 kg of PET (about 25 1.5-liter bottles) we need 2 kg of oil and more than 17 liters of water.

So for every liter, two are wasted. In addition to this we must consider the impact of the transportation. Only for the packaged water market are estimated around 300 thousand trucks put into circulation with an average distance of 1,000 km and a total emission of 265,000 tons of carbon dioxide. To put things shortly a bottle of water emits the amount of CO2 of a car driving 1 km.

TERNUA AND ARCHROMA TOGETHER THE NUTCYCLE COLLECTION

There are a good 55 thousand pounds of nuts consumed every year in the Basque cider houses during the cider season. Thanks to Archroma's patented EarthColors technology, a manufacturer of chemicals with a strong focus on sustainability, Ternua presented a dyed capsule collection with a new dye derived from these shells. Through a project that also involved the Environment Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, Mondragón has realized the idea of collecting and reusing food waste. The shells, sent to the Archroma structures in Barcelona, have been converted into fully traceable biosynthetic dyes to be used in a collection of recycled cotton shirts and sweatshirts.

PROJECT CLEAN RUN

Trail running means above all love and respect for nature. But trail running shoes are not yet able to keep up with the environmental awareness of its users. Mineral oils, chemicals, rubber compounds and poorly biodegradable materials in favor of comfort and performance. Project Clean Run is an open source platform created by the collaboration between Icebug, Dynafit and On Running to accelerate the development of sustainable high performance footwear. It is the first international collaboration between competing brands in order to fight big challenges together and not just as a single company. A community survey has already laid the foundations of the project. Next deadline is set for March 2019.

This time we are going to analyze the new Elica technology presented by Aku. To ensure a more uniform distribution of the foot pressure, the Italian brand introduced Elica: an integrated system consisting of shape, mounting insole, midsole and tread that traces the anatomical shape of the sole of the foot and supports the inclination of the heel and forefoot, greatly reducing the impact and effort.

The Cerism, the Sport Montagna Salute of the University of Verona research center, declared, after careful laboratory tests, that compared to a traditional shoe, Elica footwear guarantees a more uniform distribution of the plantar pressures during the support phase and that the load is more central in the support phase of the heel on the ground. This means a considerable improvement in terms of comfort.

Thanks to this innovation, you will have more comfort during all the phases of the walk. The insole, inclined towards the outside, supports the laying of the heel while the increase of the shock absorbing thickness improves the absorption of the impact and the greater contact surface increases its stability. In order to facilitate adherence, Arctic Grip lugs are put on the areas of greatest contact with the ground. This sole, which was been developed exclusively for Nitro, combines together the Arctic Grip inserts and lugs made

Today we see more and more talks about environmental sustainability and many outdoor apparel brands have taken this topic seriously.

PrAna, the Californian brand, has become one of the leading companies in the clothing sector in terms of sustainability.

Always searching for new ways to produce eco-friendly clothing, the founders of the brand discovered hemp in 2004. Hemp is a sustainable and fast growing crop that can create resistant fabrics they found to be apparel perfect for climbing clothing. Since then, PrAna has steadily increased the share of hemp styles in its collection. We asked Rachel Lincoln, PrAna Director of Sustainability, to tell us more about the benefits of hemp and the #SustainableClothingMovement.

When blended with other materials, hemp can take on additional performance features. The best example is the Cardiff fleece we introduced this fall. Cardiff Fleece is an innovative hybrid fleece made of 55% hemp, 25% recycled polyester and 20% Tencel. Those three fibers are not only kind to our planet but also work together perfectly.

Can you explain us why hemp is such a sustainable alternative to common fabrics like cotton? There are a lot of reasons speaking for the use of hemp in the apparel industry. Hemp doesn’t have any natural vermins and therefore has little to no need for pesticides and other chemicals. Additionally, it is very gentle to soil. While other plants need cover crops and fertilizer, hemp actually puts nutrients back into the soil, extracting toxins and pollutants at the same time.

Tencel gives the fabric a buttery soft feel, hemp caters to an eco-friendly production and recycled polyester adds in performance attributes like lower weight and quick drying times.

What is the #SustainableClothingMovement? We all need to wear clothes, that’s for sure. But the modern apparel industry has caused massive damage to global waterways, soils and human health. We want to mitigate and reverse this damage by raising the bar for sustainability. PrAna wants to do the right thing for people and the planet and obviously we are not alone. There are other companies making major strides when it comes to sustainable sourcing and production. We also see that consumers are asking more and more questions about the clothes they purchase in the same way they ask about the food they eat. From farm to factory to their closets: The #SustainableClothingMovement brings together people who are committed to social and environmental responsibility, transparency and fundamental changes in the way clothing is made.

Eventually it leaves a healthier soil. It also produces more fiber per acre. Compared to cotton, hemp needs roughly 50% of the water and space to grow. That results in higher crop yield while using fewer resources, which allows farmers to make more profit.

ransparency, courage and responsibility are the three main aspects on which today lie all environmental strategies of companies that want to pursue eco-efficacy through concrete and structural actions.

More and more people share the sense of "deep ecology" described by the philosopher Arne Naess, which implies a complete renewal of the relationship between man and nature, that is the transition from an anthropocentric perspective to an ecocentric system of environmental ethics.

The second step is looking for responsible lifestyles that allow us to become an active part of this change and to pay more attention to the parts of the products and the communication that accompanies them.

In this historical moment, brave policies are more necessary than ever in order to guide companies towards a circular production system and, through communication, to actively involve the 'consumer', or rather the people in this passage. To be truly effective, environmental communication must be based on a solid and transparent policy that can help the establishment of a relationship of trust between the producer and the user.

However it is still complicated to be able to find a way in the vast multitude and heterogeneity of information on the environmental and social costs of products and producers, and therefore to make concrete purchase choices.

Communication, together with the product, is the privileged way used by a brand to convey its values and strategies, becoming a source of inspiration and identification for those who follow it. What’s being sold is not only a product, but a lifestyle, a value, an emotion: also in this lies the strong responsibility that companies have today towards the environment.

Environmental communication changes depending on whether the object is the brand or the product. In the first case there are various instruments including Sustainability Reports (CSR) and certification systems (eg B-Corp) that help the company to plan and monitor improvement actions over the medium term, defining its targets. In the second case, however, the situation becomes more complicated because the types of instruments available are a lot more. In fact, there are various levels and types of environmental labeling regulated by the standards of the ISO 14020 series that identify 3 types of environmental brands:

the "Single Market for Green Products Initiative" program that uses the methodologies of Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and Organization Environmental Footprint (OEF) with the aim to standardize the rules and measurement criteria for the environmental footprint of products throughout their entire life cycle.

- environmental labels, based on principles of excellence thanks to their respect to certain requirements verified by third parties (eg the European Ecolabel);

The ambitious project should be completed by 2020 when the environmental label will officially enter the market.

Transparency is at the base of this labeling system, but it is also the center of today's environmental communication. The greater awareness of the risks associated with a production system that cares about the environment and towards the workers leaves no room for grey areas.

Within this initiative, Sustainable Apparel Coalition took part in the pilot phase of the project promoting the development of an environmental label that highlights the efficiency of environmental performance of the product through an "environmental score" similar to what is currently happening for household appliances.

s usual I’m late, the sun is setting and the day is coming to an end, I quickly check in at the hotel, imagining that the first day of the Flow Festival has already gone.

I head to FinalBorgo in the hope of finding a place still open in order to eat something.

As soon as I arrive in the beautiful old town, I can see with my own eyes what other people told me before, the Flow Festival is not just like any other event.

An entire city celebrating, all the people who love the outdoors, all in one street enjoying aperitifs, music and DJs. Out of the well-known flagship shops of the most important outdoor brands you can meet a lot of friends, drink, dance and in a short time it’s already 2 am.

Ok. I really don't know exactly what I came here in Finale for, but certainly it was not just to drink beers, even if I’m particularly good at it. I get up early on Sunday morning, and from the window of my room, which is right above the main square of the Bike event, I can see that there are already a lot of people having breakfast.

I go down, and after a quick walk to the sea, I realize that the 25,000 people that the press office of the event had actually budgeted are all present.

So, you would ask, what is the Flow Outdoor Festival? Explain that from just one point of view would be simplistic, because in these 4 days a lot of things happen. We would need to have a point of view of a biker, a climber, a runner, a hiker or of those who love sea activities. From my point of view, I really loved the events like Finale For Nepal and the Bluegrass FinalEnduro. But I have also appreciated how the Finalese community, now one of the capital city of the Italian outdoors, has welcomed with serenity and kindness all these fans, with an atmosphere of simplicity and lightness to be enjoyed.

There were many activities offered by the organizers located in an extraordinary natural landscapes made of rock walls, sea, coasts, inlands, mountain biking trails. This event just emphasized to all people its potential and the value of a territory naturally voted for the outdoor activities.

I’ve almost forgot. At the FinalEnduro, after 8 races around the world, the new world champion of the Enduro World Series 2018, the Australian Sam Hill, has been crowned.

In the splendid setting of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Finalborgo, in addition, thousands of people have acclaimed some of the strongest Italian and international climbers.

Together with the best Italian newspapers in the sector, their distributors, their athletes and dealers coming from all over Europe, we had the opportunity to learn about the new strategies that will be adopted regarding the marketing sector and we had the chance to see a preview the new winter 2019 collection proposed by Salewa and Dynafit, two of the independent big brands that are part of the Oberalp group together with Pomoca and Wild Country.

Thanks to the Alto Adige’s brand invitation, in the early afternoon we had the opportunity to view the entire collection for mountaineering, trekking, speed hiking and alpine life and to see in detail together with Giulia Gamba, Junior Product Manager, the innovations that will be presented in 2019 and the technical improvements made to existing items, such as the expansion of the products made in Alpine Wool.

The wool will be used as base layer, as well as an insulating intermediate layer and as an insulating jacket, it will also be combined with other fibers such as polyester and technologies like the Celliant that comes from the medical world.

In this way, Salewa is trying to minimize the environmental impact, using the Tyrolean sheep's wool, in addition of supporting local farmers and using a shorter production chain, reducing CO2 emissions but at the same time ensuring excellent heat, a great breathability and a remarkable capacity in term of thermoregulation and insulation.

And there could not be a better task for us. We are long time friends and admirers of the brand, we share its values and goals and have always felt inspired by it. We love sports that are practiced in silence, away from the crowds and immersed in nature. This is why we believe that its protection is fundamental. Since its creation, the Californian company has adopted an alternative business method aimed at protecting the environment, and it has been a great challenge for us to have the opportunity to tell its story, its initiatives and its constant commitment to aware information that all its brand ambassadors also carry on.

The first in program could only be a Patagonia History Night, an evening to discover the brand told by an exceptional guest, Norbert Sandner, European Alpine and Climbing Manager, who made us discover unpublished stories and anecdotes of the Californian brand.

October 9th was the night of Greg Long, world-renowned surfer, who inaugurated the conference “A night of surfing and activism” at Base Milano. At the end it was projected Never Town, the last film of Patagonia shot along the Australian coast, which explores what these places mean for surfers and what they are willing to do to save them.

After the presentation was shown Mountain of Storms, the movie about the extraordinary story behind the name and philosophy of Patagonia that shows the crazy adventure of Yvon Chouinard and four friends who left on an old van traveling six months from California to Patagonia.

The following evening the focus moved back to Europe thanks to Mauro Mazzo, a well-known fly fisherman, who has been the protagonist of an evening called “Tight Lines” with stories about fly fishing and the changing of European rivers over the last 40 years. At the end of the speech, was projected Blue Heart, the Patagonia documentary that tells the fight to protect the last pristine rivers of Europe from the threat of 3,000 hydroelectric projects.

Saturday, October 6th was the time to inaugurate the Patagonia Thrift Shop, a second-hand clothes shop open for only one day, aimed to encourage all citizens to make informed purchases.

The temporary shop in via Tortona has given people the opportunity to buy a branded product at a special price and all the earnings of the day have been entirely donated to Italian non-profit organizations that Patagonia has been collaborating with for years.

At the conclusion of the Milan campaign, Saturday, October 13th took place “A day of adventure and activism”.

The commitment of the brand to share the idea that it is essential to take care of our garments and repair them when necessary also translates into trying to realize durable and long-lasting products that should not therefore be replaced frequently.

For an entire afternoon at the Tac space in Milan, personalities like Fabrizio Giraldi and Manuela Schirra, photographers of the National Geographic, Luca Albrisi, videomaker and splitboarder, and Zoe Hart, a Patagonia ambassador, discussed and organized workshops on this difficult but important issue.

According to this philosophy Patagonia launched in 2013 the Worn Wear program. A way to encourage people to keep their clothes in use as long as possible. After the Worn Wear Tour, that traveled through all Italy and Europe, the Worn Wear Truck has arrived in Milan for several days

The North Face Mountain Festival 2018 TEXT AND PHOTOS

I must admit it. I have always had a weak spot for the Val di Fassa. Moena, Vigo, Campitello, Canazei. And yet I had never traveled that road that leads to Malga Crocifisso, in Val San Nicolò. A romantic valley that goes from Pozza towards the Monzoni and the Marmolada chain. A valley that I’ve always looked at. From the top of Cima Uomo or from the Costabella’s peeks.

Starting from the desire to encourage a new generation of explorers, Marion Hearty and Evelina Nilsson, the new entries of the international team, talked about freeride and what it means to be a woman in an environment that has always seen male figures prevail. The same stage, the same sofa and the same thread also for the interesting four-way conversation between Rory Bosio, Tamara Lunger, Caroline Ciavaldini and Fernanda Maciel.

In 2016, our weekend had begun in Wassen, on the northern Gotthard wall, and it went on in the clouds of the Sustenpass, in the Urane Alps, continuing slowly towards the Bernese Oberland, the Stein glacier, the Gadmer valley. Interlaken direction. Lauterbrunnen direction. But that was another story, another context. The curiosity this time has lightened up at the San Pellegrino Pass, it touched the borders of the Val di Fiemme and it revived seeing the Catinaccio.

It’s here in this Dolomite scenery that the third edition of the Mountain Festival has found its place, the first one in Italy.

Three days of climbing, hiking and running that have given emotions and moments of conviviality to over 600 enthusiasts ready to be guided by The North Face athletes in an extensive program of experiences for all levels.

Ideas for reflection that in the second evening gave way to a mix of humor and drama. A charge of adrenaline and adventure introduced by the usual, overwhelming, Keith Byrne. It started with the Pou brothers, just returned from the Island of São Tomé, in Central Africa, where they managed to open Leve Leve, 8b +, a new climbing route on the Pico Cão Grande and the third stage of their personal 4 Elementos project. Soon after, it was time for Walk The Line, the compelling documentary film that tells of the attempts of the strong team David Lama-Conrad Anker to ascend the Lunag Rto.

Oh yeah. Because the real protagonists of this event are the athletes. Their driving power, which makes the Mountain Festival a unique event. They are the ones that excite the heart, cheer the spirit, make people smile and excite. They are the ones who transmit humanity, energy and courage, showing weak sides and fragility. The first evening opened up under the sign of She Moves Mountain, a global initiative that the Californian brand laun-

Activities that would have gone on until the early afternoon of Sunday, and that would have been the highlight of this Mountain Festival: a paragliding launch from Col Rodella. We waited impatiently for our turn while the other guys, one at a time, flew from the ground along the meadows of Pedonel, towards the south, towards the Gran Vernel. We were surrounded by a 360° view of the Sassolungo, the Sella and the Marmolada. The Dolomite chain appeared as stone giants and flying through them became an unforgettable experience.

A panorama of rare splendor and incomparable scenarios. But it was time to hurry, the blue sky was leaving room for clouds coming from the north and a strong breeze started to rise from Val Gardena. It was our turn, a takeoff at 2300 and a planar flight to Campitello di Fassa.

During the 2018 Mountain Festival, The North Face unveiled an exhibition of exclusive items put up for auction in a high-altitude temporary space.

T

he inauguration of the very first The North Face store was unforgettable. On October 26th, 1966, in a small shop in North Beach, San Francisco, an eclectic crowd of climbers, beatnick, activists, members of high society and simple enthusiasts gathered.

This enthusiasm also spread to the legendary band The Greatful Dead, which animated the evening with an exciting improvised show. That night the true spirit of The North Face was born. After more than 50 years, as a tribute to that day, The North Face has

inaugurated the most extreme and iconic of its temporary space, at 2,100 meters high, in the heart of the Dolomites. The Bivouac Zeni, in the grassy terrace at the foot of the Vallaccia, has hosted for ten days the exclusive collection of bags and jackets worn by 8 of the most famous explorers of our time, giving the opportunity to touch with hand some historical symbols of their sports challenges.

The proceeds of the auction of these items were donated to the SAT of Trento in favor of projects for the protection and promotion of the mountain.

I have a poster of James rolled up in my room and this thing gives me to think. It's a strange feeling.

I know all these athletes from the hundreds of photos and videos I saw on the internet, but most of them do not even know my name.

rossing Catalonia you realize that the sunsets are infinite and infinitely lit. The sunlight filters through the large double window of a thick sheet metal coach, creating an unusual optical effect: you see two suns, infinites and infinitely lit, indeed. This tin box is slow and noisy. We are heading to the autonomous community of Aragon, in the almost uninhabited village of Rodellar. The sun has now reached its maximum intensity.

An orange and red fire. There are not so many mountains behind which it can hide: we all talk to each other with narrowed eyes, with faces that turn into grimaces. We chase the sun until late at night.

There is also my dear friend Silvio Reffo, with whom I traveled from Bergamo together with the marketing and r&d office of La Sportiva. I say hi to Federica Mingolla who in the meantime is getting to know everyone else. Then there are Nalle Hukkataival, Jorg Verhoeven, Katharina Saurwein, Anak Verhoeven, Iker Pou, Eneko Pou, Patxi Usobiaga, Kilian Fischhuber, Caroline Ciavaldini, Roger Schaeli, James Pearson.

but there is a silent ferment on who will first try the routes. There is a healthy competitiveness in all this: it is nice to see how everyone gives the best for the first ascent of the two routes.

I’ve never been to Rodellar. It has always been a climbing destination that I have largely avoided. Maybe that’s because of convenience or prestige I have always preferred the cliffs in the areas of Siurana and Margalef. Guilt or merit of the photos and videos on the internet maybe, but it does not matter. As soon as I see the imposing walls of yellow and gray limestone, I can not help feeling like a stupid fool.

Jorg and Silvio are the designated ones.

"Hashtag Bandits" (8c hard) and "Run Daddy Run" (8b / +) are born.

The air you breathe is motivating. It is a continuous exchange of suggestions and "alè alé". The hands rise in the sky to repeat a move while someone rests following an attempt in which he gave one hundred percent. Climbing is not the only topic of conversations between climbers.

Limestone, limestone everywhere.

I’m amazed even more in front of the miles of canyon with virgin rock still to be spiked, in a place so famous on paper, but that has not yet met the sharp points of the drills of serial nailers. Citro, our local guy, has equipped in the famous sector of Surgencia two new routes to free specifically for the meeting.

It’s nice to hear talks about future projects, travel to distant places, politics, family, things to remember and memories to build. Not just climbing, in short. That’s what La Sportiva is: not just climbing, not just performance.

We know that repeating a hard route is nice, but freeing one is even better. Respectfully, the climbers talk to each other,

ometimes I find myself answering the question "how did you get this idea?”, in a very simple way, I'm almost a bit ashamed to say that it seemed a completely normal thing to me.

A happy island that has a special energy, and when I'm no longer feeling good with myself up here in the north, it's where I go to take a break, while looking at the sea from the top of a volcano.

I realized how much desire and need of normality there is out there in this historical moment where everything is moved by envy. I crossed Italy passing through Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and finally Sicily and I would never have thought how powerful human goodness could be.

I left home, Cesana Torinese, near the French border, and I pedaled south, 2200km of pure poetry.

I needed to take care of myself.

I'm not a professional cyclist but the bike has always been a good cure for me. Maybe it is because of its rotary motion, pushing forward sweating every meter of the road, that makes you think about how everyday life works. And so, without thinking about it too much, I took Brigitta, my golden retriver, and put her in our legendary Jhonny cart and then left.

Human beings are still capable of great gestures of beauty and goodness and this journey to the discovery of my land has confirmed that. What am I talking about? Simplicity, because the simple things are also the right things, especially the smiles, but not the ones I received, but the ones that people have pulled out of me.

I had never tried to ride with her behind and little thing I know it was for the best, because otherwise I would never have left: Brigitta, the cart and the "suitcases" were a baggage of 50kg. Over the kilometers, I have heard our language change accent, I have seen our people undress of all possible clichés, I have learned that if there is one thing that unites north and

When I think back to my trip and I always repeat this sentence: give yourself permission. I gave myself permission to look stupid on a bike with a cart and a dog, I gave myself permission to cry, to be afraid, to embarrass myself and to feel beautiful.

For me it was a simple journey, I have nothing to teach and if ever I had to find some heroes in all this without a shadow of doubt they would be the people who hosted me, those who encouraged me, those that I inspired and those that moved me to tears.

I gave myself permission to get out of my comfort zone in order to grow a little more. Twenty-seven days with myself, me and the most intimate part of me in the most beautiful country in the world. It sounds like a movie. It was a journey in the journey.

Today I would like to know what she thought during this adventure.

Just before leaving I posted my itinerary on my social channels and I asked my friends or friends of other friends if by chance they were on my way and if they wanted to host me and Brigitta having in exchange a hug and a beer.

A journey inside me, a journey through places, colors, seas, our history and our art. A journey with Brigitta and just myself.

From there it was an explosion of human warmth, people started to follow us and support us. Many people have written me what a nice adventure, but I would not call it like that.

I established with Brigitta a new relationship that I had never had before. It was not easy for here to get used to being in the cart, at first I had to force her but after some times we found our balance. Brigitta self-regulated herself.

For me it was a simple journey, I have nothing to teach and if ever I had to find some heroes in all this without a shadow of doubt they would be the people who hosted me, those who encouraged me, those that I inspired and those that moved me to tears.

At the first bark I knew I had to let her out to do her things, then I just waved a hand to make her settle quietly in her new house with wheels. I often felt her move behind me, I checked that she was fine. I apologized to have taken her on this journey.

The real heroine, perhaps, is Brigitta that understanding more than anyone else has accompanied me in this crazy but at the same time normal adventure.

Every now and then she was standing, but that position, especially uphill, made me work harder and so I asked her to sit down, I spoke to her as if was talking to my best friend in front of a coffe and she gently laid down and let herself be pulled. She was funny, she put her face out and let the wind mess her hair up. Maybe it's just looking at her that I understood what it means to enjoy life by letting the wind mess up your hair.

I recommend a trip like this to everyone, especially to women because it has made me aware of how much I love my being a woman and how beautiful, independent and strong we can be.

Adjectives that perfectly adapt to this incredible expedition of freeride and mountaineering in the heart of the Karakorum chain.

Adjectives that are also absolutely suitable for the mountain itself, a peak of 5850 meters that has never been climbed before then. Maybe. A five-week journey through Pakistan began, in search of the most spectacular mountain face on the planet to ski.

An incredible adventure but so remote, so high, so committed that no mistakes were allowed. It all started with a photo that Thomas Delfino saw while flipping through a library book, «Les Plus Belles Montagnes du Monde» (The World’s Most Beautiful Mountains).

That photo was about a mountain so steep, so icy and inhospitable, but a face so beautiful and eye catching, that he almost became completely obsessed.

He researched day and night to figure out the mountain’s name and its exact location, Biacherahi’s North Tower in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range. Had it ever been climbed? No one knew.

What he certainly knew, however, was that he wanted to reach the top. He immediately talked about it with his freeride snowboarder friend and buddy, Zak Mills, and he remained mesmerized too.

The project started taking place and Thomas went on putting together a top-notch group of mountaineers and skiers to plan an expedition to at least reach the base of the mountain, even though the hope was to ascend and even ski the face.

In addition to Thomas e Zak, there were also the athlete Leo Taillefer, the mountaineers Helias Millerioux and Yannick Graziani, the cameramen Pierre Fréchou and Julien Nadiras and the photographer and film director Jérôme Tanon.

To access the incredibly remote face, their approach started on foot from the small Pakistani village of Askole, and then traversed the vast yet relatively little-known Nobande Sobande Glacier. The crew initially received help from Balti porters before heading off on a three-week self-sufficient adventure, pulling sleds full of freeze-dried food, tents and propane to melt snow, solar pa- nels for the camera equipment, sleeping bags, and mountaineering gear.

Five weeks, more and more deeply into Pakistan, 150 km in complete autonomy, facing the many and complicated challenges on their own including moving camp almost every day, acclimatizing to the high altitude, managing the batteries, gas, and food, dealing with the frigid nighttime temperatures and the extreme mental and physical fatigue, avoiding crevasses and avalanche hazards, and of course skiing beautiful, steep, and committing lines without any room for mistakes.

“When we crossed the Skam La Pass at 5660m elevation” as Jérôme Tanon remembered, “we felt like we were the only people on the planet. In fact, if I had to summarize in just a few words our 3-week, completely self-sufficient experience at 5500m, I would say remoteness, adventure, and camaraderie. Never in my life have I experienced anything like it!”

After arriving at the legendary and difficult Skam La Pass, the expedition reached the Sim Gang Glacier and the Snow Lake basin, one of the most beautiful places in the world. To return to Askole the crew slid down the entire Biafo Glacier, completing their 150km loop on foot and skis.

The experience has been a real adventure and to impress it well in memory all the team members kept a personal travel diary for the entire expedition.

The film's narrative, available for free on YouTube starting from December 2018, is based on their personal thoughts and reflections.

The film, supported by the clothing brand Picture, will start its international tour at the beginning of October, with a sneak-preview showing during the prestigious High Five Festival in Annecy, France. Zabardast will then be shown at renowned film festivals in close to two-dozen countries, covering the entire 2018-2019 season.

I really enjoyed it. I traveled through Japan and Canada all January and February but always following the weather in the Alps. For 5 years now our mountains have been left with little snow and so much wind and I couldn’t wait to finally return to explore our playground.

We found excellent conditions in Alagna at Monte Rosa where we filmed a project with Red Bull, but also in Austria and Switzerland we had so much fun with all the snow that was there.

* You are developing many projects on the communication front about yourself, can you tell us something about it? I’ve been interested in film making for many years now, not only as a skier in front of the camera, I also like being behind the lens and taking care of the editing.

Filming with many different video production teams during my career, especially the 5 films with Matchstick Production, taught me a lot.

Both in terms of riding but also in terms of filmmaking and how to put ideas and dreams into practice.

My first project started in 2016, slowly, and this year I was followed all the season by film director Alex Meliss. We are very proud of how it came.

Talking about contests: any project and goal? After the second place Overall in the Fre-

eride World Tour last season, I would really like to finish on top of the podium this year. It will certainly be very hard as the level is growing so much from year to year. You need not only be physically strong but also mentally. At every race you have only one descent, which must be studied in detail through binoculars and photos.

If something unforeseen should go wrong in that one descent (for example, just landing in someone else's track or hitting a snow-covered stone) it can be very hard mentally. I hope that fate will be on my side this winter. I look forward to the first good snowfalls to go back training.

You are living the mountain at 360° and you are visiting the most incredible places in the world. What left you more puzzled during these trips? I would say that the experience on Mount Ushba (4700) in Georgia in 2017 left the deepest mark in my mind. The goal was to make the first descent of the north wall. We made two trips, one in April to do heliskiing and plan our next expedition, and then the real expedition in the summer.

Nobody knew what to expect during the first trip. It was a new territory, we had no preconceptions. In the end it was like skiing in Alaska, and almost better. During the actual expedition,

however, it was already summer in the valleys and on the mountains. Only the northern walls above 4000m usually still have fresh snow during that period. Unfortunately it was not our case. The whole descent was pure ice but we managed to reach the top of Ushba, the Cervino of the Caucasus. A beautiful mountain in a country full of culture, traditions and friendly people!

You’re basically a skier, but we know you're practicing other outdoor disciplines, what are your favorites and why? I

do a lot of climbing, walking in the mountains, skating and surfing in the summer. I'm a big fan of these disciplines, almost like skiing. For example, when I skate I always try tricks a thousand times until I close them and then continue until the movement becomes automated. It’s the same in climbing and other practices.

When you learn new movements and find solutions for new routes it is a huge satisfaction. I'm not one of those people who is comfortable in the gym so I try to combine my hobbies with skiing, training balance, resistance and tension of the body. I also jump on the trampolines and I do slackline. My theory is that by practicing what I like, I naturally do a lot more and it does not seem like a real workout even if it is tiring. In autumn, however, I still have to go to the gym.

You will be in Milan for the Milano Montagna Festival & Fuori Festival powered by Vibram, can you explain us better what you will do and when? I’ve

been 5 years in a row at the Milano Montagna Festival. I'm very interested in growing the Italian scene as we have mountains and crazy snow close to home here. This year I will present the Alptopia project I shot with Red Bull at Monte Rosa.

Then I will share my experiences during the FWT races and how we spent our time between races, always through videos. I am waiting for you on Saturday 27th of October from 9.30 to 10.30pm.

Any future project? My big goals for next season are again the FWT and to continue to shoot videos for the #Roadshow, my social media project. Then I will film again with Matchstick Production. In general, however, I like to be spontaneous and take opportunities as they come, following the snowfalls and the perfect conditions.

The main goal is definitely to have fun!

I arrived in Chamonix late at night, maybe around 11pm, I thought I would meet the classic desolate, nostalgic and lonely mountain village. I was wrong. In every street, in every corner and everywhere I found runners who started or ended their races, someone sad for the defeat, others in fibrillation for having crossed the finish line.

I looked at them with admiration because they had tried, they had fought, suffered and celebrated. With all their strength and their smile they had step up in the play, in a society where the comfort zone seemed to have become a necessity. Their legs were wounded, their faces full of mud and their hands trembling, but they were free at last, just for a lap, an hour or a minute they were heroes, and in the end they didn’t care if they had won or not, they had received their due applause.

The Pill often tells about the one that arrives last rather than talk about who wins, who sets his personal best or who gets on the podium. Because each one of us, in the end, competes for and against himself, each one of us has his own personal challenge to win.

Tell me about you.

F. I’m Regional Director Europe South of Columbia Sportswear, always traveling not only for work, and I have been working in the sport world for over twenty years. I consider myself particularly lucky because I work in a sector that has always identified me. I practice many sports, some of them on a competitive level like skiing and running.

G. My name is Gian Maria I am 37 years old, I was born and I still live in the beautiful Turin. Since I was a child I have always practiced sports, from judo to hockey, but also mountain biking, canoeing, squash, skiing. I love playing sports.

When and why did you start running?

F. I’ve always run, but I have moved from road running to long distances in the mountains only in recent years and with a lot of satisfaction. In 2015 I was in Chamonix for work because Columbia began its collaboration as a partner of the event. As a mountain lover as I am, I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere that gravitated around the races.

G. Around 30 years old, tired of having to depend on others to train, I bought my first pair of running shoes. I perfectly remember my first walks and runs in the Valentino Park in Turin and my first goals: 5 km in 30 min and then 10 km in 1h. After a short time, the Valentino's park, no matter how amazing it is, started to look small to me. The alternative was beyond the river Po, exactly 300m from me there was a new world, made of hundreds of kilometers of paths.

When and why did you decide to face this race?

F. Seeing these athletes challenging themselves in fantastic paths in the midst of nature made me start thinking that I would also have liked to try to live this kind of experience.

I also wanted to challenge myself, in a particular moment of my life where I lost a person very close to me. This event gave me the impulse and motivation to start competing again.

G. For trail running enthusiasts like me, the UTMB competition represents a chimera. It is like the trail running olympics! When Denis Piccolo from The Pill contacted me to offer me this adventure in collaboration with Columbia, I thought I was dreaming! I did not even think a single second before confirm my availability!

You are not a pro, but you must still train. Where do you find time to do that and what are your daily workouts?

F. That’s the beauty of this sport. You can run everywhere, there are beautiful places in the world and since I travel a lot for work, I can always find some time to train, even if that means waking up very early in the morning.

G. No, I am not a pro at all, neither am I a strong athlete. During the year I train every Monday and Thursday evening with "Sentieri della Collina", the amateur sports association dedicated to trail running I am the president of. To prepare this run to the best of my ability I decided to spend the summer holidays in Val Gardena in order to mix business with pleasure.

What did taking part in the UTMB CCC mean to you?

It meant a significant step forward in my competitive journey because in 2017 I had already faced the OCC (54 km) and now finding myself, after only one year, competing in a race with double the kilometers and altitude, was a challenge that I could not refuse.

What was the most exciting moment on the race?

F. There have been many of them. First of all the start that, without a doubt, was one of the most exciting moment.

The spectators were waiting for the athletes to start with almost more excitement than ourselves, then I loved to exchange opinions with other runners, the music and the speaker who always cheered us up.

G. The arrive in Chamonix for sure, it was incredible! Thousands of people applauding you was a crazy emotion!

What was instead the hardest one?

F. When I had to take the decision to stop, it was a moment that I never thought I would have had to deal with after having already run ž of the race.

G. At the 20th km, in a mountain pasture at the top of the first ascent, while filling the water bottles, some other runner took my poles. I fell apart. I looked for them everywhere without finding them, in the end I swallowed that sadness way deep and left. The descent went well and my mood improved and then fell again during the second monstrous climb. I was literally devastated. At the 40th km on the edge of the retreat, a volunteer (Antoine), lent me his poles, this gesture gave back me all the energy lost and with all the interests and the last 20 km flew allowing me to reach the finish line fresh and with a smile.

Francesca the weather conditions have changed dramatically during the race.

How did you deal with this problem?

Any difficulties?

When you start this kind of races, you never know what conditions will be waiting for you. Let alone that these races are run in the mountains at high altitudes, even in the dark.

This increases the risk of never being completely prepared.

This edition has been, from the meteorological point of view, very hard and many unprepared athletes have been caught off guard. I was one of them. After 35 km all of a sudden, the cold and the rain caught me by surprise, causing me stomach problems that I could not handle.

Francesca not finishing a race means for many people not a defeat but just postponing the appointment. Will you try it again?

I can’t deny that at the beginning I felt a bit defeated but then I realized that not accomplishing the goal is part of the race itself or at least is one of the possibilities. You’re asking me if I'll try it again? Of course! I'm certainly not the kind of person who leaves something unfinished. At least I'll work harder. In the meantime, I have already registered for the 90 km of the Trail del Cinghiale on November 24th.

F. Of course being a finisher at the CCC 2019.

G. Being so crazy to try and accomplish the 2019 CCC.

Above Everything ...

vinced that ours was the right strategy. As very often happens, after many hours of movement and a few slept, time becomes liquid and it is increasingly difficult to perceive its flow. The traditional distinction between day and night no longer exists, some moments last an eternity while hours seem to fly away in a few seconds. We crossed hills never crossed by anyone before, we climbed stones so steep that we must proceed far away from each other to not collapse on ourselves, and we descended valleys in the midst of plants of blueberries so high that we needed to get on our knees. We saw so many wonderful things that our brain struggled to memorize them all.

don’t like to know the plot of a movie before going to the theatre or the reviews of a book before reading it. I have so few occasions to be amazed, that I don’t want to lose the surprise by knowing in advance what awaits me. I do the same thing with races. I collect superficial information and I do a mental project, just to plan my training in order to face the difficult direction. It is a very subjective training method (also called #cazzomannaggia); sometimes it works, other times it can lead to epic failures.

When it came to PTL I followed this strategy. On the other hand, how to prepare a race of more than 300 km and 26,500 m of positive elevation? Fortunately, my anxieties and fears calmed down a few days before the start when what I could have done was done, and an insane curiosity to discover what was going to come assaulted me. In Chamonix there were not many people, the big circus had yet to open its doors and at the briefing managed by the PTL committee everything was calm, it seems a country-like air.

I am not a very nostalgic persone but I can’t do anything about it: starting from Place Triangle de l'Amitié is always a great emotion. Even for three old and worn trailers like us. Yes, because this adventure has to be run as team and we are three.

With a few hours of delay on our spannometric calculations we arrived in Val Veny, at the first of the two life bases. We were glad for having reached this goal and then we moved towards the most technical part of the whole route, the old railway that leads to the Monzino Refuge. In the darkness, Mont Blanc was big because of its huge mass. It was not easy to find the start of the railroad, in the dark, between old dangling ropes. When our ascent began, it was nice to be pushed by the force of our arms, lightening the weight of our body on our tired legs.

Fear of emptiness and adrenaline drove us to climb fast between rocks, bolts and steps. The wall was so overhanging that we saw other teams taking advantage of the way indicated by our front lights. The full moon began to glimpse over the de Bruillard glacier, we ate something happy to be there, halfway between the sea and the summit of Mont Blanc. We continued the journey but we could not find the path to reach the refuge, the obligatory waypoint.

We could see it on our screens but it seemed to be beyond an insurmountable wall. I looked for a signal to call the shelter; incredulous and a bit dulled by fatigue we followed the indications of the refugee towards that wall that had seemed impassable to us and magically we found some old yellow trail signs that guided us to our destination.

Immediately our love for adventure was evident: we have never met before the start and we have never looked at the route map. My backpack, thanks to the experience gained at the Marathon des Sables, was heavy but manageable, Roberto had a big hiking backpack that I've never seen before and Luca, well, Luca could easily compete for the prize for the heaviest backpack. Other teams had backpacks just bigger than those for the UTMB, they have tested almost the whole route, and they passed us without hesitation where we got lost. Right from the start the race revealed in all its essence: between two paths, when there are, the trackers always chose the most impervious one. In a certain way, we appreciated the perverse taste of putting competitors in continuous difficult situations.

We signed the billboard and found out that we were in fourth place. We knew that it had no value and that we were just at the beginning but we run to the feet of the downhill.

We left the competition with the other teams and entered a sort of psychological challenge with the organization of the race. It seems stupid but this change of perspective helped us to remain vigilant, always ready to take decisions.

We proceeded forward when, while looking for Roberto, Luca and I illuminated the void under our feet, we were walking only on a metal rod stuck in the rock. The legs began to tremble in a mixture of fear and fatigue. With a stupid smile we reached Roberto and together we put our feet back to the bottom of the valley.

We didn’t sleep on the first night. It was a beautiful night, warm and clear, the starry sky was beautiful and I was con76

We alternated moments of extreme lucidity, stimulated by tension and fear, and moments of clouded tranquility. What seemed to be simple, crossing of the Miage glacier, proved to be a nightmare. We were not very agile on unstable disarray and we struggled a lot to get out of it.

ted by the front lamps, and that brought us back to a state of dreamlike drowsiness that made our decisions very difficult. The situation was complicated by the numerous signs of other races. It was raining, we were cold, we dressed up, we changed our front lights, but we could not find the route and so we lost a lot of time. Another team joined us in search of the hill to cross. Once passed that hill the scenery changed, the earth replaced the stones, we breathed a sigh of relief, but it lasted very little. The mud has made very little walkable the ridge we had to pass. We were more than halfway through race and on that route I was literally collapsing. I could not stand, I kept walking and falling without realizing it. And the instant I fell I immediately woke up and pointed the pole. Another two steps and I collapsed on the opposite side. I saw myself from the outside asleep on the edge of the path.

I strongly suggested a pause to rest, but the icy air that came down from the ice on the Lac Combal prevented it.

We arrived at the Elisabetta refuge at dawn of the third day, had a fast breakfast and the decided to take a 45-minute sleep break. I was afraid, with so little time available, that I could not sleep but when I lifted my feet off the ground after three days, I fell in an intense sleep. At the sound of the alarm we quickly got ready, and in what seemed to us an absurd confusion produced by the hikers who prepare their big backpacks, we resumed the journey finding peace.

Our life had been reduced to the essential: eating, sleeping (a little) and following the route. We soon acted as a single-celled organism, the needs of one of the three are those of all three. The experience is so intense that it is difficult to put thoughts in line.

Memories and memorized images mixed and surfaced in random order. Some pieces were instead a black hole.

I'm out of my comfort zone. It's a new experience that I've never tried. I do not know how long this nightmare really lasted, but I know I could not stop in the mud, in the rain. I had to reach the next shelter.

We tried to look for the right direction. Another team joined us, using poles as ice axes, they managed to pass us. The mud was now a molasses and to not risk more we put the crampons on. We were short behind and we were about to lose contact with the group. I run forward to wake up and tried to make visual contact with the others.

The way that leads to the Robert Blanc Refuge was very beautiful but the weather was changing and storms were expected. When the first one arrived to us, we all together extracted our secret weapon, the poncho. Quickly, without stopping, we wore it over the backpack and immediately felt protected like a snail with its shell. This ritual would have been repeated an infinite number of times from there to the end. There was no race direction that could take decisions in case of bad weather, we were the ones that had to decide independently. We were alone, there were no volunteers telling us which hand to put on that rock. We passed into lost areas that even the classic mountain men became a mirage and those few that appeared to us, were in fact the remains of some landslide without any value.

By day, in good weather, this ridge must be wonderful. At night, in the rain, I could not wait for it to finish. I reached the group but I didn’t see my friends, I stopped and as I waited for them the dawn of the fourth day arrived. It's always a magical moment that helps you stay awake. I tried to calculate the hours of sleep and I stopped at four. I could not calculate the days passed instead. In theory, we could have arrived in Chamonix on Friday afternoon.

We had imagined a triumphal arrival one hour before the departure of UTMB, with all the public applauding. But dreams are often very far from reality. There were still more than 100 km and 10,000 m of climbing to go.

It was useless to act like the superheroes that we were not, the tiredness began to be felt, the joints cracked but our feet were the things that were affecting us more than the kilometers and hours. They hurt, especially in the points that are normally not stressed by the race. From here on we would evaluate our ability to withstand pain. The race was so complex that we explored almost all our physical and mental limits.

In Beaufort (the second and last life base) we had something to eat. I do not know why, I even took a shower and slept those 45 minutes, that was now our standard. In the middle of the fourth night we left regenerated; it seemed that our body had adapted and were happy with very little. Getting back into nature after being indoors for a few hours was almost liberating. We had become like those vagabonds intolerant of conventions.

Thanks to some small stops, at the Refuge de la Balme we ate and in the middle of the third night we walked towards the Pierra Menta. The fog was thick and humid, illumina-

The race had then been so long that the experience accumulated in the first days was useful for us in the following days. We climbed quite well and our navigation technique is tested: we followed the track on the Garmin of Luca and I, when in doubt, opened up my app Cartograph and headed in a different direction from the one in which he was moving to. In this way we quickly realized what was the right path. We were not as fast as those who had already tested the route but we managed to get away quickly enough.

changed our uncomfortable situation. We arrived to a point where the erosion had carved a magnificent hole in the rock from which we saw the whole next valley and we understood why the organization wanted us to do so much effort.

We had to climb down but we tried to do it fast because in the distance we saw a storm coming. We couldn’t understand how far the shelter was far. We had to follow a cross that became steeper and therefore slippery. There was a light on the other side of the valley but the track didn’t seem to go in that direction. I turned around to see if the two teams we had indicated the passage were coming this way and I saw, I was sure, hundreds of lights descending along the paths and heading towards the light in the valley.

We were stable around the fourth position, for little this may count, since there is no official ranking, but we needed a goal to stay focused. At the magnificent Rifugio du Petit Tetraz we slept our 45 minutes, while Roby stayed awake to chat in the hall. We left fast, optimizing the break as much as possible. We realized we were being much slower than expected due to the difficulties of the route and we tried to cut the dead times. In the next climb Roby asked for a time-out, we were about to switch off and we sat on one of the rare benches on road. I didn’t have the time to fall asleep that he rose suddenly to his feet, he walked a little more then sat back indefinitely. He didn’t want to talk, he proceeded alone with his demons. We followed him trying not to lose him. Seen from behind, he looked like a disarticulated puppet that was about to fall at any moment. Then came the dawn and we regained a good pace.

There were hundreds of torches that run like a swarm. That show left me speechless and I called the others and tried to give them a scientific explanation of that phenomenon.

A country festival magnificently orchestrated by the shepherds of the valley who put small LED lights on the sheeps’ collar as they returned to the fold.

Roby and Luca nodded but they were focused on finding the route because the weather was getting worse. We saw lights above us and some of those seemed to come towards us. It was difficult to understand which way to go. We decided to follow the trail even if the slope on which it passed has collapsed. It seemed impossible for us to keep going.

We sent our position with the GPS spot and called the organization; the guides were coming up to divert the route and avoid the landslide. We were in the middle of it. We screamed and barked against the lights that were approaching us. They shouted us to go on and get out of there.

Easier said than done.

Near Col Des Aravis we tried to buy food without success.

As we continued, I felt my Achilles tendon burning and something swelling under the sock. Until that moment, the pains and problems had always been manageable, but from there on I knew it would only get worse. There were about seventy kilometers left, which in a PTL rate translate into a day and a half. I saw the possibility to finish the race fading in a second. The stakes were very high, normally I would have stopped but I decided not to leave. I knew that I would pay the consequences. I tried to find a little relief using the pole together with the right leg and blocking the tendon excursion with the calf muscle. The pain was so pungent that I lost lucidity, I no longer knew if I had to eat or to sleep. I completely trusted my two companions for the simplest decisions.

I couldn’t take it anymore, I was the first in line and I concentrated not to slip but one foot out of two didn’t hold me, I used my poles as ice axes but they were not enough. I would have liked to stop putting crampons on but I could neither sit down nor raise a foot without slipping. I increased the power of the front light and unfortunately looked down: there were only overhanging walls.

I am afraid of heights and often in situations of precarious equilibrium I think that rather than continue to suffer it is better to jump down, but these are only fleeting thoughts.

I had to do something to get out of it, my legs were trembling. I tested the ground at each step before loading the weight over it, I tried to distribute my weight on the poles in the best way possible before lifting the other foot. I didn’t think about anything, I didn’t think I could fall and slip, I was totally focused on the repetition of those elementary gestures that I didn’t feel the creek that screamed beneath us, I didn’t see the rain and the mud flowing, there was nothing but the cone of light that illuminated my feet.

We were stuck on a standstill, I woke up from my bad thoughts when I saw Roby going in one direction and Luca in another one. I went on towards a third one, but we just could not figure out where we should have gone. We evaluated all the possibilities by thinking about all pros and cons and finally agreed for the path that went through a channel, in the hope of not having to come back. The passage was narrow and mangy but we were happy to have

After a period of time that seemed interminable, the slope decreased and I started running to escape from the danger just passed. When I reached the path I turned to see where Luca and Roberto were, but darkness was all I could see. I was sure they were behind me. I screamed in their direction but my voice got overwhelmed by rain and wind. I didn’t know what to do. I stood still, I didn’t feel like going back to that hell.

into fantastic animals and I seemed to see, on the white stones scattered along the valley, drawings that seemed to be made by ink with a Captain Harlock style: pirates, skulls, cobwebs, one more beautiful than the other. I imagined the shepherd painting them in the long hours of waiting while the flock was grazing.

We entered the shelter and didn’t say anything about the accident, we decided to stop for a few hours to leave behind the memory of that bad night. The day after the sky was clear and we continued our journey with a renewed serenity. We wanted to finish our tour without haste, enjoying every meter of the last km. After what we have gone through, the normal difficulties made us smile and we joked as we were heading towards the 2000 meters of altitude that awaited us at the 260th. The tension vanished, time no longer existed, the pains disappeared.

It was just the three of us and the mountain. We knew that sooner or later we would have arrived at our destination.

We began to visualize the arrival, or rather, that image that often works much better than the banner: a nice lunch under the sun, with a good beer, taking all our time to rearrange the thoughts.

I shouted and sent signals to the guides who were going to divert the route to avoid the landslide from which I just came out. They didn’t hear me. Maybe they had gone back, maybe I had gone too far. I had to get back on my feet, we could not lose ourselves. Finally I saw a light coming towards me, it could only have been one of them. I illuminated Luca's face and I saw the fear drawn on his face.

He, who is always gravely impassive, was pale white and seemed very tired. Neither of us could speak, we didn’t see Roby. After what seemed to us an eternity he finally came out from the darkness. He had crampons on his feet, he mumbled something about the limit, about death, he told us that his life has passed before his eyes.

The difficulties were not over but the accumulated experience was useful to face them with irony. Yes, because to climb on the Passage du Dérochoir, half frozen, in the fog, but laughing like idiots takes a certain dose of irony. The trails before and after the Refuge de Plate are the fifth essence of the Trail, a perfect #Todaysplayground. Despite the 280 kilometers that we had on our legs, we run all of them. I felt good, apart from my tendon, but I excluded that from my thoughts, it was a problem that I would think about in the following days.

We looked at each for a moment, illuminated by our front lights, and we understood that we ran a huge risk and fortunately came out alive. It was a dramatic moment but also very intimate. We were on the edge of a ravine, in the rain, with an icy wind blowing on our heads and we were happy to be together again.

As soon as we reached the path we saw other teams climbing down after having passed through the ridge, we said goodbye, we didn’t even need to tell ourselves but our race ended at the Col de Doran. In religious silence we went down and sadly headed towards the refuge. Everyone was absorbed in thoughts. The tension slowly dropped. Sometimes, at night, due to tiredness, the shadows transformed

A beautiful sunset welcomed us and pushed us towards the last climb to the Col de la Brévent. On the other side Chamonix was waiting for us, there, during our absence, the arrivals of all the other races had alternated.

We were almost afraid of abandoning the silence and loneliness of what had been our world for almost a week.

Once again the magic of the ultratrail was accomplished: what seemed impossible at the start, it turned into a great experience of life.

t literally means "cheers" in Scottish. That’s what a little bit drunk gentleman told us on the one night we entered a pub after a very rainy day. If we lived this short-but-intense experience, it is all thanks to the curious and creative nature of Thomas and to that little bit of luck that never hurts.

That day had rained continuously and we were in a pub to try to shake off moisture. It had been a strange, fine rain, which, depending on the wind, became more or less sharp, like little blades that cut us. Thomas, Stefano and I had spent the day in a kind of tent fixed between the stones at the base of The Old Man of Storr in order to protect us from the rain, but the gusts of wind came in all directions, and with them also the water. In the meantime Benni and Mattia worked in the rain to fix the highline in the best way on a basalt of poor quality.

We had almost underestimated this part of the plan. We assumed that the rock pinnacles were steady and reliable. In addition the thick fog certainly did not improve the situation: we had to stay in radio contact all day but only because we did not see more than a few meters from the tip of our noses. Looking back at it, it was almost better that way.

The Old Man of Storr is a very touristy place on the Isle of Skye.

Visitors come and go to admire these giants that rise up like nothing out of the lawns of a truly intense green. Yet, despite this vivid color, I seemed to perceive a presence, as if this place was inhabited by some spirit. Maybe I'm just susceptible because of the legends I’ve read about this place.

The legend told that in the early years of Christianity in Scotland, a dispute raged among the people who inhabited the city about the exact date of Easter. To put an end to the controversy, the priest of Skye decided to go to Rome and talk to the Pope himself. Climbing the Old Man of Storr at dawn, just as the sun began to rise, he made a spell that made the devil appear and turned him into a flying horse.

During the crossing, the devil questioned the priest about the reason for the trip. The priest had to use all his wits to answer the questions truthfully but at the same time to avoid mentioning the name of "God", which, if pronounced, would have broken the spell with the consequent disappearance of the devil and the fall of the priest in sea.

The priest succeeded, arrived in Rome, learned the date of Easter and returned safely to Skye. The devil was so impressed by his intelligence that, disappearing, he uttered the threatening words: "until we meet again".

From the radio I hear Mattia saying me that the highline is fixed: 110 meters long, about fifty meters from the ground. In that dark and gloomy atmosphere the Old Man inspires fear. It's almost scary.

The forecast remains uncertain for the next day and a half, we do not know if Benni and Mattia will be able to walk the highline. Thomas and I are not sure to get all the images we wanted.

But sometimes it's strange, you have the feeling that things get better, without a reason, even when the science of weather forecasting seems to thinks otherwise.

You feel optimistic. You feel lucky.

You feel that everything will be all right, even though you’ve arrived to a place where the words "good weather" can not mean much more than "maybe today it won’t rain". The following morning the clouds that initially covered the sky had slowly cleared away. As we climbed up to The Old Man, I saw that long line that seemed to hold those almost immobile pillars that have been together for hundreds of years. The good weather had attracted many tourists who tried to understand the usefulness of that "line", what it was, why it was there.

The closer we got, the more we were careful to see if there were any cops ready to ambush us. I was in the middle of this situation that belonged only to us, something that we had built for the only desire to do that, to complete something of our own. The more time passed, the more the elements began to blend harmoniously. Initially the light filtered through the clouds and then, at the end of the evening, illuminated all the visible things. In the end, Benni walked the line, staying in balance for almost fifteen minutes crossing it in its entire length.

But the night never came because of our close distance to the north pole while the moon played above our heads. It was one of the few occasions in my life I felt privileged, like I were in the right place at the right time, as if it were the only and last chance to be able to really shoot what I was experiencing. We have immortalized one of those rare shows that for two outdoor photographers represent a true whole and intimate conjunction with Nature.

The landscape is always stunning, but the fall colors and the beautiful light make it even more breathtaking and perfect for photography. For this reason, and many more, we´ve decided to spend a day on the Mount Plose, that offers a wide range of activities for those who like the adventure, but also for the ones who want to enjoy the spirit of the mountain. The spectacular view of the Peitlerkofel, the peaks of the Geisler/Odle and the beautiful hiking paths are the primary characteristics of this area. After a nice and not so difficult stroll you can easily reach the top.

The panoramic path of the Dolomites offers images of landscapes which are among the most beautiful in the entire area.

The climb to the Plose mountain hut on the other hand promises a 360 degrees panorama that’s difficult to find anywhere else in South Tyrol. There you can also find the Panoramic Table that explains all the beautiful mountains in a clear and simple way.

Silvia Metzeltin: “What is the adventure for you or in your opinion?”

Walter Bonatti: “Nowadays everyone is talking about adventure. Adventure is a word now present in

every speech, it has become a bit like the parsley of everything in life. Indeed, too many meanings are attributed to it, often losing sight of the real one. For me adventure is all that is not organized and that gives space to imagination, inventiveness, chance, to our imagination.”

Silvia Metzeltin: “In that case, then we can notice with horror that our society today allows

very little adventure. What is no longer organized nowadays?”

Walter Bonatti: “Perhaps it is precisely for this reason that adventure is often named,

this term is abused just because we can have very little of it.”

Silvia Metzeltin: “So it is almost used at the manipulation level. We are offered an adventure on the

biscuits’ boxes, but they basically want to take the real adventure away from us."

Walter Bonatti: "Well, we should get back to this dimension: because every man is born Ulysses.”
