There are two different forms of nostalgia. Two antithetical forms, yet responding to the same name. There is a positive nostalgia and a negative one. It is a distinction that should be remembered for not falling into a sterile melancholy. Negative nostalgia looks at something unreachable and lost, induces you to regret the past that will never return leading to an irremediable sense of powerlessness. Positive nostalgia, on the other hand, reveals itself in the desire for what is still achievable, it recalls a joyful and happy moment that lives into the world of possible things. You just need to wait for it. And it is from the last one that drives us when the snow season is about to end, when we are preparing to put the skins back in the cellar. "You can smell the scent of the earth in love and the manure on the lawns," said Mario Rigoni Stern in his book Uomini, Boschi e Api. And we live that feeling in the limbo of waiting, in that kind of indolent time in which we begin to draw the conclusions of the past season. A time of indecision and doubt, when you’re divided between directing your desire of open spaces to other practices or abandoning yourself to the hope of a last storm, looking for some slopes that can still satisfy your desires. “Have I done enough?" is not a question that should be asked today. The important thing is to have filled every available moment with awareness and exciting living joy. Without regrets, without resentments, only pervaded by this positive nostalgia. And you? How do you evaluate your winter?

LOST IN PREALPS 2019 A global call to exploration on two wheels, an invitation to get lost in the natural territory of the

Treviso Pre-Alps, an adventure that will allow you to discover remote places of historical importance. The first edition of Lost in Prealps, a bike trail dedicated to gravel and mountain bike enthusiasts, will be held on the 13th and 14th of July. Six points of interest that everyone will plan to

their liking, without support and without time limits. An experience that will write the personal

history of each one in these wonderful and wild mountains. Next to the main event, the village

set up at the lakes of Revine (TV) will be the fulcrum where two days of collateral activities will converge such as SUP, canoeing, trekking, E-bike and paragliding.

DC ACQUIRES THE LICENSE OF THE STEP ON FROM BURTON DC Shoes has acquired the license for the Step On technology, a fast locking system thanks to which it is possible to lock snowboard boots in bindings without the classic ratchet strap. Thanks

The collaboration with Burton on a revolutionary product could only be the next step, "said Bobby Meeks, director of marketing at DC Snowboarding. "The new Step On system enhances the snowboard experience and we are proud to be the first brand to take advantage of this opportunity."

Created by the Dutch Fiction Factory, Wikkelhouse is composed of 24 layers of honeycomb cardboard assembled together using ecological glues and anchored to a wooden skeleton that keeps them in place during the assembly process. Thanks to its lightness, it does not need foundations and can be built on any surface, while resistance to atmospheric phenomena is guaranteed by the special film that covered it. GORE FABRICS AND ITS EFFORTS FOR THE S U STAI NAB I LIT Y O F 2018 The Fabrics division of W. L. Gore & Associates has recently published the Responsibility Update 2018. The document once again underlines the constant search for innovative materials that are increasingly respectful towards the ecosystem. The main goals achieved in 2018 include the significant progress made towards the elimination of PFCs from the entire life cycle of products, an aim fixed at 2023. At the beginning of 2018, the Fabrics division had reached the first fundamental step of this roadmap by introducing the first laminates with a new DWR treatment. In the document, Gore Fabrics also states that more and more GORE-TEX products will be made with recycled and dyed-through fabrics. The update is available on the site: www.gore-tex.com/responsibility.

F R I DAYS F O R F U T U R E – O N 2 4 M AY T H E SECOND WORLD STRIKE

On August 20th 2018 there was only her, still fifteen, in front of the Swedish Parliament. "I will strike for the climate until election day" she said. When the newspapers started talking about Greta Thunberg, more and more students embraced her cause. On March 15th, a million and a half people took part in the world strike called by the student movement Fridays For Future in over 125 countries. Next May 24th, the day when the second global climate strike will be held, students will find support from over 23,000 scientists, whose research demonstrates how the currently applied measures for climate protection, biodiversity, forests, sea and soil are far from sufficient. Greta is the demonstration that, as she herself said, "you are never too young to make a difference”.

Activists, politicians and athletes are supporting the Big Oil Don’s Surf movement. "The Australian Great Bight is a paradise for birds, marine mammals and all invertebrate ecosystems," says Belinda Baggs, surfer and Patagonia ambassador. “Thousands of species are in great danger because of the risky drilling in deep waters. All of us, as surfers, love the sea and we depend on the health of the oceans". If Equinor will get the confirmed permission to proceed the damage to the ecosystem will begin and the risks of future spills will increase.

Gore-Tex Surround Comfort and protection. Every foot needs these two characteristics, especially when the temperature rises, kilometer after kilometer. Gore-Tex Surround footwear is exactly designed to offer you this, an unbeatable climate control and a guaranteed waterproofness.

G

ore-tex sorround product technology offers a 360° climate comfort for the feet, allowing heat and sweat vapour to go out in all directions. They are in fact breathable in every part without compromising the waterproof protection that lasts over time. The feet remain dry and comfortable even at high temperatures. Some of these shoes have a construction with sole opening easily recognizable thanks to the wide vertical openings in the tread sole that allow excess heat and sweat vapour to go out. The total breathability concerns also the sole through which heat and humidity are channeled to the outside. The breathable structure of the sole exposes about 30% more of the surface area of the skin to remove moisture and heat from the feet to give you more comfort. Without compromising the impermeability, this feature guarantees you always fresh and dry feet even indoors and at higher temperatures, all day. At the same time, a special Gore-Tex laminate wraps the feet on all sides and prevents water from penetrating from the outside. An extremely resistant layer also protects the feet and the laminate from stones or sharp objects. Gore Fabrics. 1% END OF LIFE

USE PHASE 35%

Gore Fabrics constantly strives to act with the highest integrity and responsibility and has an ongoing commitment in order to meet or exceed all applicable health, safety and environmental regulations and respect all the voluntary standards that has adopted.

F

or the Gore Fabrics Division acting responsibly is a natural consequence of the Gore culture that translates into respect for the environment and in treating its employees and partners correctly. The W. L. Gore & Associates Fabrics Division has recently published the Responsibility Update 2018. A document that once again underlines the constant search for innovative materials that are increasingly respectful of the ecosystem. Gore Fabrics has in fact put together a real environmental responsibility program based on three key fundamentals that do depend and therefore also build upon each other. Gore strongly believes hat its decisions and programs must be based on the principles of sound science. Moved by the desire to use science based and globally standardized tools, they have chosen to apply the so-called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in order to measure the overall environmental impact.

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is applied as the main scientific methodology to understand the areas in which it is possible to reduce the environmental impact more effectively. It is important to emphasize that Gore was one of the first companies in the sector to begin a process aimed at reducing its footprint on the environment. The LCA results have provided scientific evidence that the single most significant lever to minimize the environmental footprint of a Gore outdoor product is to enhance its useful life. From 2010 all Gore Fabrics manufacturing sites were certified to comply with bluesign system, a highly demanding and comprehensive environmental and safety scheme for the textile industry. To strengthen consumer confidence in the safety of it products since 1996 Gore Fabrics has been adopting the OEKO-TEX Standard 100. OEKO-TEX is an independent test and third-party certification system for raw, inter-

mediate and textile end products that regards its Standard 100 as “the most widespread and best known label for textiles tested for harmful substances on a global level. In addition Gore is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) that, among other activities, develops and promotes the Higg Index, a suite of tools to exchange reliable information on the environmental and social performance of facilities, products and brands. In its Responsibility Update 2018 Gore Fabrics states that more and more Gore-Tex products will be made with recycled and dyed textiles. Although the use of mechanically or chemically recycled fabric has a rather small impact on CO2 reductions, using recycled materials will allow Gore to contribute to the reduction of plastic waste that generally ends up in landfills or in incineration.

Patagonia celebrates the 20th anniversary of the R1

B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

“Aiming for improvement, we always tend to add something. On the contrary, we have made it better by simplifying it. And it works so well that we never had to abandon its basic concept”. ERIC RICE

Patagonia's iconic R1 fleece is now 20 years old. In fact, this year we're celebrating two decades of wild adventures, first climbs, history and hundreds of in-credible stories to tell. Versatility, tradition and innovation. These are the key features of the R1, the famous light and breathable cross layer, an extremely technical product that the Californian brand has always realized, but never stopped improving and perfecting over the years. The iconic garment was born in 1998 by a group of designers and testers gathered in the Patagonia ware-house in Bozeman, Montana, with the aim of developing a better technical product than others fleeces on the market at that time. At the end of the 90s, in fact, the existing models had already demonstrated their limits. They were heavy and bulky to use as a cross layers. The Patagonia designers therefore decided to work by subtraction. Back in the days, to obtain the soft consistency and the high bulkiness typical of the garment the traditional fabric was “brushed twice”, a process that broke both sides of the knit loops of the raw fabric. But that at the same time that was what caused most of the problems. The team has decided to solve the problem by modi-fying the mesh structure to create a one-sided brushed pile with a grid of pillars and passages, where the pil-lars provide bulkiness and lift the fabric from the skin, while the pas-

sages move the moisture and the air and improve compressibility. Eric Rice, director of the technical clothing and equipment design, started working for Patagonia in 1997 and was a member of that team. “When we started testing the first versions of the fabric” he remembers “we tried to make one half piece in R1 and half using double-sided stacks. When you go out and use it, you im-mediately understand which side is most comfortable, or which side is better compressed. It was quite obvi-ous that we had a good intuition”. A year later, in the autumn of 1999, the Regulator line was launched, and immediately had a resounding success, becoming a staple for all types of outdoor technical activities thanks to the perfect balance between functionality and multi-functionality.Over time, Patagonia has always made improvements to the product such as the addition of a hood, greater elasticity, the transition to recycled polyester, a removable tear-off horse, wider steam passages in the model and stitching made in Fair Trade Certified factories. The R1, on the other hand, has proved increasingly per-forming. During the last 20 years it has been field-tested in almost all the most imaginable conditions and all over the world while still remaining a cutting-edge classic, as well as one of the most popular product by Pa-tagonia. “Aiming for improvement, we always tend to add something,” concludes Rice. “On the contrary, we have made it better by simplifying it. And it works so well that we never had to abandon its basic concept”.

26

In the last 20 years, the famous fleece has never gone out of fashion, becoming a sort of “cult” object in the outdoor world.

Radicality. Are you a radical runner? Ask this question around. Most people will not understand the meaning. Some will answer you by listing the races they have run, but it is very likely that those who have a lot of miles in their feet, the real radical ones, would just shrug and say "nah, I like to run and that's it". Or at least, it usually happens to me. 1974. These were the years when in the United States you saw people walking on the beaches with surfboards on the roof of camper vans and the great American West was a land of promises, of regaining individuality, of reappropriation of your own personality, but above all of bets . You were use to do things just because someone told you that it was not right or not possible to do them. Unlike what you might think, ultrarunning is not a sport born among the athletic fields, neither in cool military environments in the weight rooms of the gym, like the Spartans and not even from a bet about “who is the strongest one” as the distance of Ironman in the triathlon - even if it must be said that the original bet of the boys of San Diego in '74 was genuinely naive and very different from the atmosphere and the economic interest that moves this sport nowadays. Ultrarunning was born and spread among hippies, punks, former drug addicts and misfits of various kinds. People who by vocation, by attitude or to escape the convenient chemical alternatives of the pleasure of drugs - very popular at the time, like today - found themselves spending a lot of hours running and suffering. History tells that, again in 1974, the founding father of the discipline, Gordy Ainsleigh, presented himself at the Tevis Cup, that was a horses race back then, in shorts and sneakers (and without a horse) becoming the first athlete to cover the distance of 100 miles in less than 24 hours. His 100mile run lit something in other people's minds. In 1977, first official year of the 100 miles, 14 people were lined up on the starting line. Among them there was the 22 years old Andy Gonzales, a guy that Gordy met just the day be-

fore the race, who was running for his own business. Gordy told him to participate in the 100-mile run, advising him to start off calmly and see what would happen. The boy who listened to him was hesitant but at the same time excited. Gordy told him the truth, that would be a great experience, and just go for it: Gonzales accepted. In 1977 people were not so afraid of failing as we do now. He should not have written a post to explain to his followers the reason for his failure. Failure was what it was, a possibility; people back then were less obsessed with appearing always perfect. Gonzales spent the night sleeping on the ground near the departure in a cheap sleeping bag at Squaw Valley, 3.000 meters above the sea level. He bought some apples to eat in the race and left with 5 dollars in his pocket and a bottle of water for the hot day. The run started from the ski resort at high altitude, descended into canyons with more than 40 celsius degrees, crossed rivers and ended at the remote athletics track of Auburn. At mile 50, with 80 km in the legs, only three people remained standing among the sixteen pioneers who left at 6 am. Gonzales and two marathon runners in their fifties with experience. Andy felt good, or rather, gritted his teeth and continued to give his best; he was a conservative party, exactly as Gordy had suggested, and on his arrival he found himself alone in the lead. Gonzales was the only one to break down the 24-hour wall, a full day of running, the real challenge of the Western States Endurance Run and he was the first real winner of the race. That same race that nowadays has more than 6000 applications in the lottery just to be lucky enough to participate. That race that every ultrarunner dreams of running at least once in his life.

Gonzales accepted. In 1977 people were not so afraid of failing as we do now. He should not have written a post to explain to his followers the reason for his failure. Failure was what it was, a possibility; people back then were less obsessed with appearing always perfect.

The Clean Outdoor Manifesto LUCA ALBRISI INTERVIEWED BY DENIS PICCOLO I L LU ST R AT I O N M AS S I M O M A R Z U C C O " I ' M A T E E N AG E R "

Where and when was the “The Clean Outdoor Manifesto” project born? The project was born during the days of Milano Montagna 2018. Between a documentary, a beer and a chat, Davide “Zeo” Branca and I ended up, as often happens, discussing about environmental issues related to the outdoor world. We agreed that it was necessary to have a more active participation to make the outdoor world aware of environmental issues, but founding a new association or “import” one from abroad seemed a bit too “imposed” as a process. We wanted to proceed step by step so we decided to start with the drafting of a MANIFESTO that would summarize the vision of a clean outdoor and at the same time be a declaration of intent. What is it actually about? At the moment there is the page you are reading and the Manifesto that is about to be published here and on a lot of Italian outdoor magazines. After all, what is more powerful than a vision and a sharing of intents? The most important thing now is to share the will to stand up and act in the name of a vision that can create a concrete bottom-up movement, pushing people first to think and then to act.

On what basic concepts is this project based? The Manifesto is fundamentally based on a vision of existence that puts nature at the center of human life, and therefore also of outdoor activities, as a primary element. But above all, the same human is a part of the natural reality and not just above it. The outdoor experience in nature is therefore a way to get closer to what we are. Who are you exactly? You can clearly read who we are at the beginning of the Manifesto: we are all that is outdoor. The names that you can found at the bottom of it, instead, are the ones who collaborated in its writing, the first 12 signatories of the document. The Manifesto, however, is not only ours but it belongs to everyone, and everyone can sign it and use it in the name of his vision. Talking about active participation, how will you move and what projects do you haven mind? The Manifesto proposes a vision but real actions must come from everyone. For this reason it does not belong to anyone. We are not an association. The Manifesto can and must be used by anyone who has in mind concrete actions in line with its philosophy, in order to spread it further. So make it your own and take action!

30

Our next step will be to publish the Manifesto online in order to make it accessible to everyone who shares the same principles and to start building a real network of reflections and actions. Against whom and what do you fight? We oppose an anthropocentric view of the world that puts man above all things. We fight against the exploitation of nature, whether it is for economic purposes or to satisfy the human ego. We oppose the arrogance of exploitation that reduces nature to a mere resource. We fight a vision of the outdoors that is not able to recognize the natural component and its active protection as fundamental within its own experience. What will be your first goal? Our main aim is to inspire our community in order to create a CRITICAL MASS of outdoor practitioners who are able to identify problems, propose concrete actions and bring them to life. What does the word outdoor means to you? Outdoor is what we are. Outdoor is where it all started and where it all will end. Outdoor is what we will fight to defend.

Kouichi Okamoto x Canada Goose B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

Canada Goose celebrates rain in all its forms thanks to a special capsule collection, the four men and women waterproof jackets, engineered from high-tech Gore-Tex fabric, are the Nomad Jacket and the Nomad Hybridge Lite Jacket models. The Canadian brand chose to collaborate with the extraordinary Japanese artist and sound designer Kouichi Okamoto, who tried to capture the essence of rain in its purest form.

32

33

How was born your collab with Canada Goose? I Initially I got the opportunity to work with Canada Goose thanks to an agency in Tokyo that has a lot of ongoing collabs with the brand, so in the beginning we just planned a project concerning sound design and a shooting for the Nomad Capsule Collection. But when we went to shoot in Wakayama for the campaign film, another idea came to my mind, I wanted to realize an artwork about water and rain and concerning Japanese culture as well. I presented it to Canada Goose and they really liked it so starting from there it kind of expanded into a larger project that led to an exhibition at last Milan Design Week. It was an amazing opportunity and unique experience! What do you mostly like about the brand and its philosophy? Personally I’m very interested in outdoor, I love nature and I have a little expertise about outdoor brands, about designs, forms and functionality. But what I like most about Canada Goose is the fact that they use the highest quality materials always combined with great functionality and perfectly mixed with design.

[...] I wanted to realize an artwork about water and rain and concerning Japanese culture as well. I presented it to Canada Goose and they really liked it so starting from there it kind of expanded into a larger project that led to an exhibition at last Milan Design Week. It was an amazing opportunity and unique experience!

Can you briefly tell us about the Nomad Capsule Collection? And what is you favorite product from this line? For the Nomad Capsule Collection we shot on location in Wakayama during an icy week in winter, we found ourselves immersed into the woods, in nature and in the mountains but we also passed through towns, all through thick fog and spring rain. In that occasion I had the opportunity to test both jackets, so it’s not that I like more the HyBridge Lite or more the Rain Shell. The first one really keeps me warm and it has a high functionality which allows me to move easily. The second one completely protected me from getting wet inside thanks to its right amount of ventilation. It is al-so very light and that allows me to wear them both simultaneously in order to stay dry and warm even in the mountains and in the worst weather conditions. Where do you get your inspiration from? Does Japan and its culture influence you and your work? In Japanese culture, there is fondness for simplicity and to express oneself in a minimalist manner. That’s why, my aesthetic and motifs are also minimal as I try to match the original elements that ma-ke something exist. All my art pieces and products realized in the past had a central theme: embodying immaterial things or natural phenomena that are not necessarily visible to the human eye. Trying to embody them into some particular forms has been my lead motif throughout my whole career. I love seeing and experimenting objects and using them to create something that deviates from the norm, trying to express products and phe-nomena always under a different light and in this way giving a new perspective to the audience. How and where do you choose the materials and objects your work with? When using a new material for a work, I think about a method of linking the characte-ristics of the material to a familiar phenomenon. It really depends on the project itself, the right materials and objects are often based on my past experiences. For example I like working with new technologies and unique and innovative materials, just like in this installation. I like their fusion which becomes a sort of starting point for me.

34

In Japanese there are 50 different words to describe the rain. In your opinion, what is the true es-sence of rain? Japan has four very distinct seasons that change as the rain changes, following the passage of time and the variations in topography. What I really like about rain is its cycle in nature, the water evaporates and it be-comes first a cloud and then rain. I think this mutability is the true essence of rain and I like it. Then I believe that rain is also very emotional, you always see it under a differ-ent perspective based on your own emotions you are living at that time. For ex-ample if you’re sad the rain is sad as well, it drains you. If you’re happy rain be-comes something very joyful, a celebration. So the emotions that rain evokes are something that I really like. We know you have an outdoor brand called Field Record. What does the word outdoor mean to you? Outdoor is something that I was very interested in and I liked a lot since I was a little child. Nowadays as a product designer I believe that the biggest thing I can realize is a shelter, something that people can go inside of. So that’s how I es-tablished Field Record, I created products that could be like shelters, something that protects the living. There have been a lot of collections lately closely related to the urban and lifestyle world, in your opinion why is this trend picking up? Is it just marketing or will it go on? I think that all this will go on because as humans we always look for something that is more functional, more technological, more advanced. Even my work as a product designer goes in that direction. At the same time I think that I also need to be more delicate especially about the environment and its consequences. As a designer, I always try to find a balance between functionality, technology, innovation and being more aware of the environment and of the risks it under-goes today, it is a topic that concerns not only the future of the market but also our present as consumers.

35

Markus Eder: a champ, a friend, an artist.

Some people were born to make music, some to cook, someone to write. We all express our creativity in our own way. But people passionate about mountains, climbs and descents, untouched nature, like us at The Pill, know that there is also an art in dealing with a snow-covered descent, more or less steep: the important thing is that it’s fun, enriched by some nice jumps and elegantly managed from the beginningto the end. Doesn't all of this look like art? 36

ARTICLE BY S O F I A PA R I S I

W

e talked to Markus Eder, a real champion of this art called Freeride who, the past March 23rd won the most important competition in the world, the Freeride World Tour 2019 in the ski freeride men category. Markus, a Vibram, The North Face, Smith and Dalbello athlete, is 28 years old. Needless to say, he had skis on his feet since he was 3, because he was born on the mountains (the Tyrolean ones). He is now one of the most popular freeriders in the world, and for years he’s been one of the most active one with a lot of shooting and ski-movie projects, but also in the competition world, especially if we take into considera-tion the incredible winter that has just passed. Markus, tell us what you did this winter. Last year was full of projects concerning movies and competitions, this winter instead I’ve been focusing almost exclusively on the Freeride World Tour, looking for the victory so much that it really arrived. It was an incredible season for me at the Tour, the best one. I was in a really good shape. All the races went very well, apart from Andorra’s: the fall physically destabilized me, I had to ski for the last month under pain-killers. And without this failure I would have arrived at the final much more relaxed, without any pres-sure. But it went well anyway, thrills and adrenaline accompanied me until the last stage, which went great. And what about your activity on social media and in the shooting? This winter we had the #ROADSHOW project, with my friend and video maker Alex Meliss, with whom I had been collaborating for years: the idea was to travel the world on skis, sharing our trips "on the road ". I must say that, apart from the mandatory return to Austria, given the exceptional snow that was there, we had the freedom to ski in incredible places. Where exactly? We went to Japan ten days before the Tour, we filmed around Hakuba, and then we had a stopover in Hawaii, before reaching Canada.

We stopped there for four, five days, because we wanted to ski the Mauna Kea, a volcano more than 4,200 meters high. There was not much snow there, but we managed to ski on the sand: it was very interesting because the place is one of the most important in the Hawaiian mythology and religion. A local park ranger, before we descended, explained us a bit about local beliefs and it was a very intense moment. We also prayed together. It was magical. What do you prefer between competitions and shooting films? In general I like filming more, because you can do whatever you want, look for the perfect place, build the jump of your dreams, and make the line you have in mind. And you can do all this not for the judges but for yourself, for the gesture itself. But I also like competitions, I have been competing for a long time and I really care about doing good, especially at the Freeride World Tour. It's very hard and it’s easy to do some mistakes on a line. All emotions are amplified, when I do well I feel like a hero, but when I make a mistake I tend to isolate myself for a week. Winning the Tour has been an indescribable satisfaction. In Verbier there was the whole Vibram team, the complete Bramani family, cheering for you: what does this sponsorship mean to you? I've known Vibram for a long time. Since I was a child, that little yellow sign on the sole has always been a symbol of technicality. What I did not know, and I discovered in recent months, is that behind that symbol there is an Italian company, with an international success but still run by

37

the same family, after four gen-erations. The most beautiful thing is the passion that these people, everyone in Vibram, put in their work. Seeing their faces at the finish line in Verbier, receiving hugs and sincere smiles, it was like being part of a family. Another cool thing is the collaboration in the product development. It is not the first time I devel-op products with a company, and I have to say that I like to test them, and give my technical advice. I have some experience and I feel useful and specialized in this field. To help in improving and developing new technologies satisfies me, and with Vibram this happens regularly. Currently we are working on the Arctic Vibram adaptation for ski boots. What plans do you have for the summer? As I was saying, being a freerider I really like the part of video making and shooting. In the last few years I have worked a lot with the best professionals in the field, in particular with Matchstick Productions. With Alex Meliss there is always an exchange of ideas and creativity. I have never been just in front of the camera. Over time I’ve developed some skills and above all a passion: I would like to create my own mov-ie, something more important than the previous projects. In particular, I am now working on a documen-tary with two friends photographers who work a lot on nature and wildlife. I can say that I know the world of action. What I would really love would be to do something with more quality. I’m usually inside the sto-ry: now I would like to see if I'm also able to tell a story.

Danilo Callegari. The limits are just in our mind. Running through the Atacama Desert, cycling across entire continents, swimming for 50 kilometres in the Indian Ocean and jumping off a plane on the Polar Cir-cle. Do any of these challenges seem titanic to you? What if we told you that just one man accomplished all these tasks, often combining them into one single adven-ture? His name is Danilo Callegari, born in 1983 in Friuli, a mountaineer, parachutist and much more. In 2011 he gave life to the 7 Summits Solo project, now at its fourth stage, Antarctica. The center of his adventure this time has been parachut-ing from a place, reaching the geographical pole on foot and climbing the highest peak on the continent, Mount Vinson. We met Danilo when he came back after more than two months in the land of the ice to know how it went.

You never know how the al-timeters and emergency opening systems of the parachute will respond, if there will a hypothetical freezing of the hands and therefore an impossibility to open the parachute, or a potential fainting etc.

Hi Danilo, what is the genesis of the Antarctic project? The Antarctic expedition is part of a much larger scheme, the 7 Summits Solo Project, a plan totally conceived by me in 2011 and very unique on the interna-tional scene. The name 7 Summits refers to the seven highest peaks in the world, one for each continent. What makes this project unique are the adventures I cre-ate around these great mountains, it pushes me crossing deserts on foot, conti-nents on bicycles, paragliding, parachuting from planes, kayaking and much more. The mountain remains the center of every single adventure, a 360 degree project that is certainly the most difficult part to prepare but, at the same time, also the most fascinating one. I tend to get bored easily, so I like the idea of al-ways inventing something new and extreme in which to find the will to go on, the strength to carry out these adventures.

7 Summits, next stages? I still have on my list Oceania, North America and Asia. Asia will certainly be the last stage because Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is like a symbol. As for the other two continents, I am still considering which one will come first, but it will not be an imminent adventure. I’m still working on it! What is your relationship with fear? I believe and I am sure that fear is the most beautiful feeling you can experience. Fear allows you to overcome difficulties, it often saves your life and helps you to understand how far you can go. Fear is that emotion that keeps you alert, aware about what you are doing and if it fits your preparation. Obviously an incident can happen to everyone, even to the most expert and prepared ones, but I think the accident that happens by doing something consciously is different from what can happens when you are not afraid at all, when you don’t see the difficulties. The fundamental problem in my opinion is not the fact of being or not being afraid, because facing certain things it is normal and right to be, the secret is be-ing able to take control of it. When you’re able to do that, you can take the right decisions about the situation you are facing. On the other hand, it is important that fear does not take control of you leading you to panic because when you are in panic, then it is a mess!

How did the 7 Summits project start? It all started in South America with South America Extreme, 120 days through Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, 4500km by bike across two deserts (Salar de Uyuni and Atacama), 300km kayaking, crossing the whole Lake Titicaca at 4000m of altitude and then paragliding on the Chilean Pacific coast, cycling back to Argentina and climbing the Aconcagua following the Polish route. In 2012 it was the moment of Europe Extreme in which I climbed the highest mountain in Europe, in Russia, near border with Georgia, Mount Elbrus. A mar-velous volcano with spectacular views of the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, even though it is very cold and chilled by freezing winds in winter. From there I re-turned by bicycle to Pordenone through Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary and Slovenia. The third stage of the project was Africa Extreme in 2015, I swam for 50km in 23h nonstop from the island of Zanzibar to the African coast of Tanzania to reach the roof of Africa, the Kilimanjaro. I faced these 50km in the middle of the Indian Ocean aware of all the risks associated especially concerning sharks and, once I arrived on the African coast, I rested for three days and then crossed al-most all of Tanzania passing through its most beautiful and fascinating places, running 27 marathons in 27 days. When I arrived at Kilimanjaro I climbed and then descended from the opposite side in 20h and 56min. Antarctica Extreme was the last challenge, the fourth of my project. Mount Vinson was the center of the adventure, to be reached after crossing to the geo-graphic south pole where I unfortunately failed to arrive due to adverse environ-mental and weather conditions. I went back to the American base and from there I climbed the peak reaching the summit on a spectacular day. Then I parachuted from

You’ve recently become a Smith Optics ambassador, the brand accompanied you on your last adventure. What do you think about the products you te-sted? I have tested some Smith products in extreme conditions and found them very performing, especially the mag I/O goggles and the Flywheel glasses. I used two goggles, one for the crossing and the other for both climbing the Vinson and par-achuting. Both were perfect for me, the type of lens helped me a lot because in the Antarctic summer there are 24 hours of light a day every day and the light glare on the snow is very strong. The fundamental aspect of the other goggles is instead the fact that it is magnetic so it allows you to quickly change the two lenses (one for the sun and the other one for the arctic fog) without always having to remove the gloves with lot of ef-forts. These were the two particularities that made the products unique.

The strong goat Tom Beltz

Tom Belz, since he was a child, has always had only one dream: climbing Kilimanjaro. But as everyone knows, life does not always go as planned or hoped and at the age of 8 Tom was unfortunately diagnosed with a bone cancer which later led him to live with one leg with only the help of his inseparable crutches. Klaus Siegler, the doctor who had operated on him had been clear: “We must cut”. Tom still perfectly remembers that day.

Thanks to the support of his friends and Mammut, the brand he became ambassador of, last August 2018 he finally succeeded in his venture. An ambitious project that required the German 31 year old teacher and social worker blood, sweat and tears. In addition to an unshakable confidence and perseverance. “When I was a young boy, it would have felt great if someone had told me that there was a crazy guy out there climbing mountains with just one leg. My personal success can now serve as an inspiration for others, that makes me feel very happy and proud.” Tom, since he was a child, was repeatedly told all the things he would not have been able to do due to his physical impairment.

“The night before,” he says, “I was in my hospital bed, talking with my leg, I told it I would miss it.” Tom then spent a year and a half in that same hospital, refusing the use of a prosthesis, too heavy for him, “not for him”. He decided to live without it and use crutches instead, and with those he went back practicing sports. “I discovered that by balancing myself with my arms and back, I was able to maintain stability and do lots of movements. I started playing soccer, riding a bike, working out in the gym”. And at the same time he never stopped pursuing that dream he had since he was a child.

And yet, after having refused the idea of a prosthesis, he had nevertheless been able to practice various sports as well as mountaineering. A way to prove to himself what he was capable of, but also to encourage others to go beyond their own limits, real or presumed, and to give their best.

When I was a young boy, it would have felt great if someone had told me that there was a crazy guy out there climbing mountains with just one leg. My personal success can now serve as an inspiration for others, that makes me feel very happy and proud.

Climbing the highest mountain in Africa was therefore a dream come true for him and once he reached the summit he raised his inseparable crutches to the sky. “It’s unbelievable! When I reached the summit, I felt completely overwhelmed and amazingly proud! The climb was a great physical and mental challenge. When I actually achieved it, I simply felt happy and extremely exhauste.”

African guides gave him strength and encouraged him not to give up. They called him “Mbzui Dume”, which in Swahili means "brave goat”. Tom never lost hope, motivated by an unshakable motivation and finally succeeded in completing his greatest dream and goal, he stood on the summit of Kilimanjaro, overwhelmed by joy. The journey of his life has been filmed by a team of filmmakers who managed to capture all the emotions and impressions of this great adventure. “The strong goat” is the documentary that takes its name from the nick-name given to Tom, and it shows the challenges that the 31 years old had to face and the way he pushed himself beyond his limits. This incredible documentary took part in last year’s European Outdoor Film Tour in October. The German teacher and social worker wanted to show himself and the world what he was capable of. A challenge whose main purpose was also to encourage others with his own story. “By climbing Kilimanjaro, I wanted to show that a physical impairment does not necessarily need to be a disability.”

After a long preparation time, including a successful training tour on the Äusseres Barrhorn (3,600 m) in the Swiss Alps, Tom started his big project. With him there was the same Klaus Siegler, the doctor that more than 20 years ago had operated on him and saved his life and whom Tom expressly wanted with him. The whole challenged lasted for several days, starting on August 2nd at Lemosho Gate (2,200 m) and reach-ing 5,895 m on August 9th. A seven days lasting ascent walking 7-8 km every day. With the atmosphere becoming increasingly rarefied, the rough path, the rocks, the cold of the night, the snow. Tom wondered every day if it was really worth it. But the

Chris Sharma Interview Chris Sharma, 37 years old, was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, and he’s known throughout the world for being a very strong climber, the father of two girls and the owner of a climbing gym in Barcelona. For years he has lived in Spain with his wife Jimena Alarcon and their two girls, balancing between a job, a family and his passion for climbing.

Chris tell us something about you. My name is Chris Sharma, 37 years old and I was born in Santa Cruz, California. I started climbing in 1993 when I was 12 and and I had the opportunity to experience a lot in my life and to meet different people, I am really grateful for this. I believe that the real purpose of my passion for climbing is to be an inspiration for other people.

How do you train both your mind and body? I've never trained seriously, I've tried a couple of times, but my approach to climbing, to life, to my style of climbing depends on how I want to emerge in all the things I do, I follow my passions, my heart and if I see something that inspires me, that motivates me, then I dedicate myself completely to it. For me the process consists in seeing something that inspires me, which makes me motivated to the point of wanting to devote all my time and energy to achieve it. I behave like that for every single aspect of my life

What do you feel when you climb? When I started climbing many years ago it was a very natural feeling for me and I think I have that same feeling still today. For me it is the perfect connection to movement, I have always loved climbing anything, such as trees, and I think it is a natural activity for any living beings in general. When I was a child I tried practicing different sports, soccer, baseball, surfing and I felt really incapable in all of them. Climbing is something really pure, it is only you with the rock element, it is something basic that I’ve always been good at.

Is that the reason why you opened a climbing gym? For me climbing is part of a true creative process, having an idea, a vision of something possible and trying to achieve it, to make it come true. I consider myself a creative person and I like to see my ideas realized for real. For example, when I am on a cliff I visualize the line I intend to climb. After opening the gym in Barcelona, we decided

I started collaborating with Prana when I was 14, for me Prana is now like a family. It has a very lifestyle approach and I like it a lot. The founders are really importantpeople in my life.

to open a new one in Madrid by the end of the year. I think there is always something that pushes you to exceed your limits and that makes you feel alive. For me it is not important to climb the next grade, but it’s essential to see a beautiful line, beyond my limits, and work hard to improve myself and to reach the goal I set myself. It is a creative, artistic and athletic process at the same time. I love finding new lines in nature, visualizing the line and realizing it.

You are a father, a husband and a very strong climber, how do you find the right balance between all of this? It is not that easy to find the right balance in everything I do, I am still working on it. Luckily for me climbing is also my job so I can say "I'm sorry but I have to go to work" every now and then which sounds like an excellent excuse to me! Seriously, it is difficult, but I’m currently working on a new project that is just 40 minutes from Barcelona and I can dedicate at least three to four hours a day to it, so I think I have achieved an excellent balance. But sometimes I train more and others less, but in this sport you have to work a lot if you want to maintain a high level. If you stop for six months you lose everything, so I try to keep myself in good shape and when I have some free time I go climbing.

What kind of climbing attract you the most? I love all types of climbing, but I'm really in love with deep water solo. It's the kind of climbing I prefer 100%. It is a very abstract practice because it makes you feel free to follow the line where your imagination takes you. It's my perfect combination: feeling free to climb and do it over the sea.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope I will do the same things I do now, have more free time to climb and still do it at high levels and definitely do it together with my daughters.

What's your favorite spot? Absolutely Mallorca. I’ve been in many different places to practice deep water solo, but I always return to Mallorca, although I would very much like to go to Sardinia and open new lines by the sea. Where does your collab with Prana come from? I started collaborating with Prana when I was 14, for me Prana is now like a family. It has a very lifestyle approach and I like it a lot. The founders are really important people in my life. We are both Californians and we created a very nice relationship immediately. I am really proud to be able to represent them and receive their support even today after many years.

I love all types of climbing, but I'm really in love with deep water solo. It's the kind of climbing I prefer 100%. It is a very abstract practice because it makes you feel free to follow the line where your imagination takes you. It's my perfect combination: feeling free to climb and do it over the sea.

Do you feel connected to a particular Prana product? I actually love all their pants and jeans. In each collection they use new materials, in particular for the SS19 season that will be more products focused on climbing, and I'm very happy about it.

Rewoolution inside the factory T E X T S I LV I A G A L L I A N I PHOTO DENIS PICCOLO

Rewoolution was born in 2011 thanks to Reda, leader in the textile industry for 150 years, to promote a revolutionary concept of activewear. The Rewoolution line is dedicated to athletes, professionals and mountain and outdoor enthusiasts who do not want to give up Italian craftsmanship and lifestyle but at the same time devoted to cutting-edge technological innovation. Nine years of constant commitment and the highest standards that have brought Rewoolution to its 18th collection, the F/W 2019-20, and to be the brand with the widest line of merino wool with exclusive fabrics and colors. All their products are 100% Made in Italy, the wool is in fact exclusively manufactured in the historic Reda factories, in Piedmont, in one of the most important world districts of the textile industry, using renewable energies and virtuous processes of recycling and reducing emissions. Reda is also the only complete chain woolen mill in the world to be EMAS certified (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) which indicates the compliance of a company with the provisions of the European Regulation aimed at favoring a more rational management of the environmental aspects of the organizations, based not only on respecting legal limits, but also on the continuous improvement of its environmental performance, on the active participation of employees and on the transparency with institutions and the public. All Rewoolution garments are made of pure Merino Ethical wool, from New Zealand farms with ZQ certification, a very high quality certificate created by New Zealand farmers and breeders who have joined together to continue to pursue high quality standards: all accredited companies indeed are subjected to

47

48

inspections and recurrent checks by third-party experts to examine all their components. Ethical wool means that it is selected and produced through sustainable management of environmental, economic and social resources, safeguarding the well-being of people and animals. Each product of the collection has a fully traceable path: from the farms in New Zealand, where the sheep from which the wool comes from are breeded, to Reda factories, near Biella, where more than 5,400 employees work. Here the raw material is processed using renewable energies and virtuous processes of recycling and reducing emissions.. 50kg of wool bumps ydirectly arrive at the Reda factories where three types of substrates are dyed in pressure cookers that work on the fabric in three separate phases. Then each bump is processed by squeezing the fabric with additional washes. Reda employees are very attentive even to waste and recycling, in fact the scraps are used to make pads such as those of down jackets because wool is a very insulating material, perfect for this purpose. Afterwards the wool is dried in an oven. An important detail concerns the characteristics of the humidity itself, maintained at a steady 10%. This aspect is fundamental from the point of view of sustainability because the vapors are reused afterwards. All the garments then pass through various highly specialized production phases.

What more than anything else differentiates Rewoolution fabrics is the exclusive spinning system with which they are produced: the CompACT3 technology. Developed in the Reda laboratories, this process enhances the unique natural characteristics of pure Merino wool, ensuring 15% resistance, 30% elasticity and 20% more softness than traditional Merino wool. Processed with CompACT3 technology, the noble raw material increases its insulating, breathable and thermoregulating power. The yarn is free from hairiness, does not sting, protects from UV rays and prevents the formation of unpleasant smells, it is also easy to treat and it dries quickly. But above all, during sporting activities it guarantees excellent elasticity, extraordinary wear resistance and extreme lightness ensuring well-being, comfort and performance. The wool strips are then removed and the coils inserted into spinning machines. Thanks to the steam the yarn does not curl and is wrapped around the cone. Afterwards we move on to the twisting. The cones are placed one above the other and twisted together as the warp must be double to withstand the stresses of the weft. An aerial robot takes each rock and carries it to the distribution chain where it is vaporized again to stabilize it, then a mechanical arm checks the weight and prepares the various pallets, which are not made by plastic but by cardboard because they are more robust and environmentally friendly, then they are stored into the warehouse. The process goes on with the warping: 130 meters per minute of warp are processed by innovative machinery that automatically performs some steps. The most problematic parts are instead controlled by the human eye to guarantee even greater quality. We move onto the weaving, the factory has got 107 looms almost all air (in which the thread is "shot") and some with pliers (in which the thread is "carried" by a mechanical hand meaning that it is slower). Then there is a rough mend: the fabric is controlled by the human eye to evaluate if there are any possible defects that can then be repaired by hand with needle and thread. In these phases the human being is fun-

damental and cannot be replaced by machinery even ifs highly specialized. In the end there is the finishing. In this phase the fabric should relax and is then washed in swimming pools to eliminate all possible impurities and finally dried. Wool is a living fiber so you have to be careful during the washing because it could be felted, meaning it could become shorter. We are now ready for the last two processing phases: drying and ironing.

All Rewoolution products, thanks to meticulous and careful workmanship, guarantee superior sports performance and techniques. All this thanks to the thermo-regulating capabilities of the fabrics, combined with their high breathability and natural softness, elasticity and wear resistance.

Merino wool is in fact particularly suitable for sportswear not only for a matter of beauty, wearability and durability, but also for its technology. The Reda woolen mill has developed an innovative fiber system that enhances the lightness and elasticity of merino wool, without affecting its renowned resistance. This, during sports practice, translates into greater comfort because the fabric naturally follows every movement. Wool is one of the best technical fabrics as it absorbs sweat leaving the body dry and fresh. The quality of a natural product, certified and manufactured with care gives a fit that makes any outdoor activity pleasant, without forgetting the benefit due to the breathable properties of this fabric, the natural protection that guarantees from UV rays and the thermal regulation, one of its greatest merits. All Rewoolution garments are made in Reda Active, the Reda line of highly performing fabrics, which includes various proposals, starting with an ultralight Jersey with a weight of 140 or 190 grams in single-stitch non-reversible fabric, ideal as a base layer . Soft on the skin, does not pinch, does not smell and is resistant and very easy to wash. Particularly suitable for athletes, especially those active in the running and cycling sectors, dthat look for compression. Then the Mesh: an ultra-light jacquard fabric with a double weave, highly breathable beehive structure that offers exceptional performance. With a weight of 180 grams it guarantees excellent thermoregulation and total comfort. In the end there is the Punto Roma, a uniformly smooth, medium-weight, double-weft fabric. Soft on the skin and with extraordinary thermoregulation and breathability features, particularly suitable for giving life to warm clothes, suitable for outdoor activities in changing weather conditions. At the moment the brand's products and the style of their collections are studied in the Rewoolution style office by established designers and emerging talents. On the market there are 140 styles and in about 3/4 different colorways with an online sales and distribution throughout the world, especially concentrated in the Alpine arc. But Rewoolution’s future aims and challenges are many because the brand’s main purpose is to get in touch more and more with the final consumer. One of the short term goals concerns the world of athleisure. The mountain and performance scene remains the brand's core business: skiing, ski mountaineering, trail, ultra trail but also hiking, running and cycling. The desire, however, is to bring the product even in the everyday world, in the post-race or after sport activity.

This is Biking Man Oman BY S O F I A PA R I S I P H OTO B I K I N G M A N D I DAV I D ST Y V

W H O SA I D T H AT A C O M P E T I T I O N CANT NOT BE AN ADVENTURE?

If someone thinks that having a path to follow precludes the possibility of experiencing a real adventure, he should speak with one of the participants of Biking Man Oman, the first stage of the Biking Man circuit 2019. What is Biking Man? If you have to give a definition, it is a circuit of non-assisted races, which allows participants to explore, in almost complete autonomy, some of the wildest and most extreme countries in the world, such as Taiwan, Peru, Corsica and precisely Oman. In Oman, from the 24th to the 28th of February, coming from 24 different countries, arrived eighty-three cyclists, all bike lovers, but above all lovers they were adventure and exploration lovers, outside and inside of themselves.

The adventure is an opportunity to travel through these unknown landscapes, riding day and night on your bicycle: the protagonists of Biking Man have explored a part of this amazing country, the wind on their skin and their look on the horizon. In fact, the long and arduous route winds through the northeastern region of the country that from the capital Muscate, overlooking the Gulf of Oman, rises up on the rocky mountains of the Al Hajar massif. It is a relatively small part of the country, but that sums up most of the Omani landscapes: the most important city, Muscate, culturally active and avant-garde, with its buildings no taller than a few floors by law, traditionally elegant and modern, strictly cream-colored or pink, like the landscape. The mountains, arid, impressive, often scary, crossed by endless canyons and winding roads. The desert, with its golden or white dunes, moved every day by the wind, the only lord of the region. The coast, with its long sandy beaches and fishing villages, the squared and white houses. Only the minarets of the mosques and their colored domes rise up in the clear and bright sky of Oman.

That’s because the adventure is of course about dealing with 1,039 km and more than 7,500 m of vertical drop, alone or with a partner, knowing that for the whole race there will be no technical assistance. But the unknown is not just outside: it is also within us. The unknown is the human being himself, his ability to advance, to test himself, to manage fatigue or fear. It is investigating within ourselves, in extreme conditions, while exploring wild territories of the world.

One of the most interesting features of Biking Man is that, not having the assistance of the organization along the way, the riders are often obliged to interact with the local population, to get food, water or a place to sleep, which often it is not a hotel, but a private home.

becoming, from year to year, a large family of special human beings, with special stories to tell and incredible energy to share. " And we, as journalists, can only confirm it: during a week in the jeep, following race, with the windows open and the sand everywhere, we met incredible people. People as Rob Packam, 70 years old in a few months! Rob is a man who after the loss of his wife decided to continue traveling, as they used to do together, by bicycle, with his eyes and heart open to the world. Or Georgina Panchaud, 26, a child's face and the energy of a lioness, a full-time vet, but part of the feminine team aqua green colored, Bianchi Dama.

Biking Man is a journey of a thousand kilometers where is possible to observe the bewitching beauties of this country, awakening that curiosity and that attention that organized trips often leave dozing. Furthermore, one of the most interesting features of Biking Man is that, not having the assistance of the organization along the way, the riders are often obliged to interact with the local population, to get food, water or a place to sleep, which often it is not a hotel, but a private home.

Another important guy is the winner, Rodney Sonnco, at the finish line after only 38 hours from the start. Born in the Sacred Valley of the Incas 29 years ago, Rodney moved to Italy at the age of twelve to find his family, emigrated from Peru due to inflation. In his everyday life he manages a small pizzeria with his brother, not far from Monza. He discovered cycling in 2017, and today he races and wins with his big smile the most difficult ultra-biking races in the world.

And so the meeting with a unique and fascinating population takes place, modern people, but in at the same time proudly linked to their own culture: thanks to the oil first, and then to tourism, the Omani population has lived, in the last fifty years, an incredible economic growth. Despite this, thanks also to the enlightened government of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said, in power since 1970, Oman has managed to become an advanced country, open to modernity and at the same time tied to its own tradition: one of the best examples of stability and wellbeing on the Arabian Peninsula.

Almost as energetic, Steven le Hyaric, back from a crash a month before the race, was still able to pedal all the 1039 km in less than 60 hours. Nice and strong, the two components of the first team at the finish line: the Italian Christian Auremma and the Canadian Jeff Webb. Before the departure, they confessed us that they had not trained at all, and that they did not know absolutely what was waiting for them. At the finish line, amazed, they continued to laugh at their undertaking.

The most beautiful thing about Biking Man is that all you have to do is sign up and go for it: you don’t have to be an athlete, you just need, of course, a bit of training and a strong will.

The two Belgians, Helene Vandendriessche and Jan Versyp, friendly and talkative, from the beginning have decided to live the race in a relaxed mood, sleeping in a real bed during the night, and enjoying the experience without stress.

"It is the pleasure of travel and adventure, which lies at the origins of the concept of these races" tell us Biking Man founder Axel Carion. "This is why Biking Man attracts different kinds of people, or maybe it is better to say characters, who want to get involved and compete, but above all who want to explore and live this experience, sharing it with similar people. Biking Man is

What can we say, in one week we also became part of this family of crazy people, of all levels and of all ages, lovers of saddles and pedals, of roads and gravel trails, of cities and villages, of sea and mountains. Passionate of sport and adventure. In the end, just like us.

Salewa Get Vertical. Earn your turns TEXT BY GIULIA BOCCOLA P H OTO BY TO N I B R AY

A

fter a more than 7 hours long journey, together with my friend Stefano Lentati, I found myself catapulted into one of the most beautiful valleys I have ever seen: the Ötztal, a small pearl of Tyrol famous for ski mountaineering. I didn’t have the time to look around because my 15 companions, from all over Europe, already have put their skins on ready to go.

feel my body exhausted after spending a whole day with skins on, I am happy and proud to have completed another little adventure. And it is precisely this beautiful adventure that I want to talk you about: the Salewa Get Vertical. That crazy desire to take part in it has resounded in my head for some time, that unbridled desire to be able to experience this adventure, to test myself and see how far I could get; and finally that long awaited moment knocked on my door.

Destination? Langtalereckhütte, a splendid mountain hut, located at 2,450 meters high, isolated from everything and everyone, reachable only by ski and away from the ski lifts. Just a dream.

A mix of adrenaline and terror took over me. Questions such as “will I be able to get to the top?”, “will I be up to the task?”, alternated with statements like "I can't wait to leave", "even if I am slow, I will do new experiences", “POWDER”.

Ski mountaineering, for my personal experience, is very tiring but despite everything, when I'm in the mountains I feel at home. It may seem trivial, but when I struggle a lot and

* days and even if we didn’t know each other, there was a friendly situation that made everything much easier. We were all young snow and mountain lovers, someone coming from Italy like me, others from Germany, Spain and even Ukraine. We were really a nice group and with pleasure I noticed many girls between us, strong and ready to start. There were also three Austrian mountain guides, Matthias, Anton and Gabriel, expert of those areas and with faces completely burned by the sun, and even Simon Gietl, a Salewa athlete, was there, a very strong mountaineer who helped us a lot. Unfortunately, due to bad weather and heavy snowfall, we were forced to spend all Friday at the shelter, but in reality it was not so bad at all: in the morning we had the opportunity to practice with the arva, the shovel and the probe, simulating real danger situations, trying several times both the rescue of a single person and multiple bodies submerged by an avalanche; then we had time to get to know each other better and everyone could tell their stories while having a good beer or a glass of Himbeersaft, the typical raspberry juice. There was complicity and the desire to face some lines. The following morning the conditions were fantastic. Sun, a meter of fresh snow, little wind and a very clear sky, a postcard landscape. Everyone wore a brightly colored Salewa outfit, ranging from coral red for the girls to acid green and blue for the boys. With loads of adrenaline we left for our first summit. 1200 meters in altitude, more than three hours of climbing, but after a good sweat I was ready to earn my line: we were the first to climb. A lot of effort, shortness of breath and the heart seemed to want to explode, but the desire to arrive was great and pushed me to reach the goal.

Ski mountaineering, for my personal experience, is very tiring but despite everything, when I'm in the mountains I feel at home. It may seem trivial, but when I struggle a lot and feel my body exhausted after spending a whole day with skins on, I am happy and proud to have completed another little adventure.

And after a rich dinner, spiced up with nice chats and good wine, we all went to sleep, trying to get some rest for the last day before returning home. We left the shelter at 7 am in a single file, we started zig zagging up the mountain, for over 800 meters in altitude. Our aim was a rather steep pass to climb over and then descend from the other side on a via ferrata. Nothing to say, despite the strong wind and tired legs, the landscape that opened up before us was really breathtaking. A long descent in fresh snow accompanied us towards the end of our journey, happy and enriched by new memories. Then we said goodbye, hoping to see each other again soon and share new adventures together.

The sun had just risen when, moving the first of an endless series of steps, my dream began: running across Australia. More than a year of self organization, about 1500 e-mails sent to find out who could help me in this project, so many permits and bureaucratic and logistic problems to face. But above all a life of physical preparation. I have been practicing sports since I was a child, but I knew well that what I was going to face was beyond sport. It would have been a great adventure, a challenge for my body and mind and the ones of my fellow travelers; Riccardo and Mattia, respectively a photographer and a physiotherapist. I hired Riccardo Monti on a hot July day, after a few rings he answered the phone hesitantly. I simply said to him "Hi Ricky, I'm Michele Evangelisti. Would you come to Australia with me? I'm going to run 3113km along the Stuart Highway . At first he was frightened by my words that sounded like the begin of an adventure movie, but then Ricky ended up accepting, the idea of testing himself with two other unknown people for so long and in such an inhospitable place intrigued him. His job would have been to shoot the whole adventure but we both knew that the experience would not be limited to that, it would have been a real test of survival. Mattia Fedele, the second member of my makeshift team, is a physiotherapist from Abruzzo but transplanted with his studio in Como. His expertise as a physiotherapist would have proved invaluable even though he had to adapt to a new environment, unknown since the day before. In particular, prevention in that context would have been very important. Mattia, helping me to immediately manage a problem, would have allowed me to solve it in a short time, avoiding slowing down or, even worse, stopping the run. On November 9th we left Milan for Darwin, where Claudio, a member of the Italian association in Darwin, was waiting for us at the airport. The days before the official departure of the expedition we got a van, the necessary gears and made some food shopping for the first days. We also had to find a stretcher for Mattia's work and a bicycle to follow me during the run. Once we got to Darwin, we placed all the gears in the remaining space of the van, already loaded with basic necessities and technical gears. Given the need to optimize space and costs, we put Mattia's stretcher on the roof of the vehiThat cle tied up with towing straps from road trains also found along the route. The official departure was set on November 13th, in front of the Parlament House of the city and my first step was a real emotion for everyone. That day began an exploration inside and outside of myself, in a territory that had always fascinated me and that I strongly wanted to "meet", in the deepest sense of the word. But above all it was the occasion for a fundraiser, to help those less fortunate than us. The non-profit organization AUS, Spinal Unit Association of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, has been our company, our thought, our strength. "Running for those who can't" has been our motto. After that first step, many others followed up to travel 3113km in 45 days, with an average of 70km per day. The Outback was the backdrop and undisputed protagonist of this run and gave us moments of great emotion, of enormous effort, of indescribable solitude and profound reflection. I ran for more than a month, every day, under a burning sun and with a strong

... wind, almost always against me. In some rare circumstances the rain cooled the air, giving relief to the muscles and the mind. Completing the daily stages was not always easy, but never, not even for a second, I thought I would not make it. An inner strength pushed me forward, gave me the ability to continue even when my tiredness was almost taking over. My pace was so slow that I noticed the landscape’s changes after about ten days. The eyes were always on the white line, the line that accompanied me from Darwin to Adelaide, along the Highway, and that allowed the soles of the 8 pairs of shoes I used not to melt because of the over 60°C of the asphalt. I was running 10 to 15 hours a day, depending on my physical condition, constantly monitored by Mattia's attentive eyes, and on the weather conditions. I remember that in the first days, due to the irregularity of the ground on which I was running, it was necessary to cure my lumbar area and, subsequently, the attention shifted to the tendons, mainly the Achilles tendon, so overheated by the proximity to the hot asphalt and so under stress that it became painful if touched.

One of the most exciting moments of my life. And not just because I, indeed, we made it, but because I had just lived 45 days out of time and space, in close contact with the wildest nature, which I love so much and that knows how to bring the best and he worst out of each of us.

The nights never guaranteed a real restful sleep: the mats absorbed the heat of the earth and the tent was full for insects. A lot of days we woke up at 4 am to enjoy the few cooler hours. About every 5 km I had to stop and reach the small van used by Mattia and Riccardo where I drank, ate and then left again. In front of me a long, endless road surrounded by the unmistakable red earth of the Outback, a desert so fascinating and at the same time rough and inhospitable; but when you have your own dream and an important mission to accomplish everything can be overcome. The kilometers that separated us from Adelaide were reducing and I proceeded more and more determined towards my goal. Hydration and nutrition were my sources of energy, Mattia tried to monitor both of them during my run and once at rest. At nightfall, the temperatures became more favorable and it was the right time to work with Mattia for muscle drainage and stretching, aimed at speeding up the recovery and reducing the perception of fatigue the following day. More than two years have passed since I arrived in Victoria Square on December 27th, holding an Italian flag in my hands that two perfect strangers, two Italians on vacation, gave me in the desert. Finally Adelaide. One of the most exciting moments of my life. And not just because I, indeed, we made it, but because I had just lived 45 days out of time and space, in close contact with the wildest nature, which I love so much and that knows how to bring the best and the worst out of each of us. I had lived silences, fatigue, sometimes light, other times heavy thoughts like stones, images, wonderfully captured also by Riccardo's camera. But even more it had been 45 days of meetings, of incredible human exchanges with perfect strangers who met us in the middle of the desert, supporting us, smiling at us, giving us money for our fundraising. When my feet stopped, my eyes were already out of tears of joy from a few meters before. I was so excited that I still now remember the feeling: I was demonstrating to myself that so many sacrifices, so much passion and a stubborn and indestructible tenacity had brought me there and with me I had carried a deep message, on behalf of such an important reality as AUS Niguarda Onlus. Wonderful landscapes, deafening silence, aboriginal encounters, indescribable starry skies and blinding colors: the Outback gave us 45 days of a real training for life.

In the land of the Vikings HOKA ONE ONE EXPERIENCE BY DENIS PICCOLO

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. As happened in other places around the world, this island had various names throughout history. According to the tradition transmitted by the Landnámabók, a manuscript that narrates the first settlement of the place, it was the Viking navigator Naddoður who discovered this wild land and to name it for the first time ever. «It is said that some time ago a group of men left Norway for the Fær Øer Islands; some claim that Naddoður the Viking was also among them; but these went too far west on the high seas and there they found a very large land. After disembarking in a fjord on the east coast, they climbed a high mountain and looked around, in every direction, to see if there was any trace of smoke or any other sign that the territory was inhabited, but they could not see anything at all. In the autumn they sailed back to the Fær Øer Islands and when they returned they found a lot of snow covering the mountains, which is why they named that land Snaeland.»

main Icelandic airport, then headed to the hotel, near our first spot, the Sólheimajökull glacier. Arriving late at night, I didn’t immediately realize the incredible place where I was, in the morning, as soon as I got up I took a look at that desolate and fascinating plain and together with the Hoka team I got ready for the day of hiking on the ice. Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the great Mýrdalsjökull, directly on top of Mount Katla, the most powerful volcano in Iceland. A few steps to the west there is the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, that erupted for the first time in 2010. Here the contrast between the snow white, the electric blue of ice and the black from the dust of volcanic eruptions creates a perfect scenario for testing the Hoka Sky Toa and for our photo shooting.

Iceland is the second largest island in Europe and is covered by glaciers, including the largest one of the whole continent, for the 10% of its entirety. Its surface is made by volcanic rocks and much of its territory is occupied by mountains that reach discrete heights up to a maximum of 2119 meters. Its beautiful coasts, rich in creeks and deep north fjords, appear, to the south, sandy and low, and here are concentrated most of the cultivable areas, in total about one fifth of the intere land.

It was late in the afternoon and time to go back to our hotel, on the long bus ride, I could only admire the magnificence of these endless lands, the pastel colors creating contrasts that were barely perceptible to the human eye, as if it were a place frozen by cold, where the time seemed to flow slower, without haste. Day two. New day new shoe, it was time to test the Hoka Sky Kaha. We headed to Thorsmörk, one of the rare places where vegetation can be found, most of which is composed of crooked and dry birches, mosses and ferns. In fact the name of this spot is quite evocative, it means "forest of Thor". The site was very vast and to reach its heart we needed powerful off-road vehicles, the roads were inaccessible with regular cars, and the great amount of snow found did not make our arrival easier. Our hiking route led us to walk on not very high mountains, and once we reached the top, as expected, the show repaid us of all our efforts. What appeared to my eyes was an unusual scenario compared to our Alps, I realized in that moment why this island is one of the most important place for outdoor photographers. We couldn’t stop long to admire the landscape, the return was going to be long while the sunlight faded away, on the way back we met ice, rocks and a lot of snow, which did not facilitate our steps, testing our shoes to the limit, but I could not be more than positive about them.

Who are the inhabitants of this incredible land? Today, of course, the Icelanders, but initially this island was uninhabited and the first colonizations, Irish and later Norwegian, took place in the 9th century. In those early days the population did not exceed 25,000 people. Today there are about 330,000 Icelanders and almost all of them live around the only place that can be defined as highly inhabited, the capital city Reykjavík. A peculiarity of this population is being one of the very few in the world not having an army but only a local police, made of few units, and that clearly highlight the place’s low criminality. Up to this point, you may be wondering what we are doing here. The Hoka One One team, a brand leader in the market of running and trail running shoes with an unmistakable style, invited us on this adventure to test their new Hiking and SpeedHiking models, shoes with the typical design and technology made in Hoka. But we are going to discuss later on with Christophe Aubonnet about all the details of the news and the philosophy that have always distinguished the brand. Let's go back to our adventure.

Day three. We went back to Reykjavík, and before our last dinner and goodbyes, I had the chance to chat with Christophe Aubonnet, Hoka Director of Advanced Product Development, who told me in detail the brand's philosophy and their interesting new products.

Day one. I landed late in the evening in Keflavík, the

that the rubber area is 6 times heavier, so opening the foam a bit and exposing it to the ground while having the rubber in the right places is clearly a way to save a lot of weight. It’s also important to have a natural easy flex. For a long time people have thought that hiking shoes should be stiff, because for them it meant protection and durability but on the other side we knew it was not so protective. It constrains your body and it pushes it to adapt to the shoe while our philosophy is that the shoe should adapt to your body. Having some flex helps to have a natural and easy walking which is the best way to forget about the shoes when you’re using them.

Let’s have a brief presentation of Hoka One One. Can you briefly tell me about the brand and its philosophy? The original intent of Hoka was to give easier access to sport activities. It started with running and trail running but now we’re also focusing on hiking, always trying to give people more comfort and more natural progression. When someone tells us “I really felt good and I forgot I had shoes on” we know we’re doing it right. And that happens also in hiking: “I was only looking at landscapes, taking pictures, discussing with friends and I totally forgot I was wearing shoes”. That’s what we love to hear because it just shows us that our shoes are good enough for people, they perfectly answer to their needs. That’s what we’ve been trying to do over the years. We tried to satisfy people’s needs with our products in order to give them more pleasure and an easier access to running. Sometimes running can mean suffering, and we are not happy about that. Both in running and hiking we would love to receive some good feedbacks such as “I’m super happy and I really would go on hiking for hours! I enjoyed the activity a lot because your products helped me live only the good side of the sport”. That’s what we look for.

You’re facing a new challenge, you’re launching a model of hiking shoe. How and when was this project born? The project started at the beginning of the brand itself ten years ago. We received the first prototype that was meant for running and trail running and we tested it outside. It was February 8th 2009, we walked outside and the feeling was already really nice and super interesting. We thought that the benefit we perceived just walking would be interesting for ladies doing shopping in the city, for people hiking in the mountains or in the country as well as for people having injuries or difficulties. Since that first day in 2009 we had the feeling that we could do some business even in the outdoor world. But it wasn’t the right time so at the beginning we decided to just focus on running and trail running but we’ve always thought about some models of hiking as something complementary. Later in 2014,15,16 we thought about hiking again. We wanted to investigate the outdoor world much more, the validation took a bit of time and it came a year and a half later. We were working a lot with running and it was and still is a constantly growing market, so it was about time to officially start with the outdoor. We decided to do a full range of products, not just one or two, and we jumped in putting on a marketing campaign: that’s how it started. We approached the outdoor world with the idea of starting from the beginning, of course we would have liked to go quite fast, to use our arguments and our trust from what we had already done in running. We certainly didn’t expect to jump in first or second floor directly. We knew we had to go step by step and that’s one of the message I want to convey, I want us to stay really humble. The way to address outdoor should be done with our eyes really open to people’s feedbacks, their expectations and what they want. We should acknowledge the trust they already have in us and in

Your products are very popular in the running world, why are Hoka shoes different from other competitors’? Our key difference is the fact that we take into consideration the different benefits and needs you look for in a shoe. The needs are always the same but the way your answer to the them can change. The key needs are usually grip, performance in terms of riding and moving forward, stability, comfort and waterproofness. People giving us feedbacks about what already exists in the stores can change the game a lot. For example we really focus on the weight of a shoe. You can walk for an hour or for five hours, in this amount of time you would take many strides, many steps and an additional one hundred grams on one foot translates in calories, less pleasure, less comfort. This is why we decided to reduce the weight dramatically. After doing this we had to maintain the right level of stability, grip and so on. Sometimes you have the chance to increase other parameters like cushioning or comfort and that could become another source of pleasure. We achieve all of this thanks the bottom unit of the shoes. In hiking shoes you generally have an almost full bottom unit, the surface is just covered by rubber for the 75 percent and the remaining 25 percent is not rubber. If the rubber density is 1 or 1.2 while the foam density is 0.2 it means

The original intent of Hoka was to give easier access to sport activities. It started with running and trail running but now we’re also focusing on hiking, always trying to give people more comfort and more natural progression.

the products from our range that they already use.

you have on your ID, but the age in your mind. 15 years ago there was a switch in hiking, people that were used to wear classic shoes moved to trail running and multifunctional shoes. They switched to much lighter models with a low key profile. At the same time, other people remained more conservative choosing stiff and heavy but super durable shoes. With these three models we would like to reach everyone, from the extreme lover of trail running shoes to the one who was not ready to change its references in hiking. With our trail running models we are trying to reach all of them.

You have 3 new models, can you briefly explain them to me? The first one, the TOA, is meant to be used for a few hours or for a short weekend trip hiking with light to moderate backpacks. It is a shoe with all the necessary key features but also with a great look, its colors and tones are natural. The TOA key features are, like all Hoka’s, flexibility, lightness and comfort. It is also a very responsive shoe, meaning it gives you something back. Then we have the KAHA. This model can be used for more than a weekend, longer hikings, many hours per day and several days. It is the perfect shoe if you carry a heavier backpack thanks to its high comfort. It also has a good return of energy in a more stable and durable way. Speaking about look and design, it really respects the code so it’s not as shocking as the first model of running of Hoka.

In a moment of creative flatting of hiking shoes in the general market you focused a lot on colors and design. Why? It’s true that we focused a lot on design and colors but at the same time we paid attention not to go too far. In the past we were used to push things. Now, we’ve decided to voluntary moderate ourselves and not to offer a product that in terms of look would be too much. It would be too strange for the classical hikers we speak to because they would not understand it. In terms of design and colors we really realized something that would be more easily accepted by a wider spectrum of people.

The last one is the ARKALI. I would say it is the more Hoka type of model. It is a very innovative shoe because of its technical material and the great features on all of the bottom unit. It is meant for all people that love hiking as well as running and going fast, people that like to go off track sometimes and maybe to climb a bit and put their hands on the rock.

Any Hoka future projects? Today on the market you only can see three new models, but our outdoor range will be extended in the future because it is one of the new strategies that we are focusing on. We would like to live a similar story to the one we had in running but maybe with a faster success, that would be tremendous!

What kind of target do you want to hit and what market are they destinated to? Our targeted age is not necessarily the real age, the one

Hielo Norte BY LUCA SCHIERA

The Campo de Hielo Norte, one of the largest glaciers in the world, is located in Patagonia just north of the larger and better known Hielo Sur. The Pacific Ocean borders it to the west while further east the plain extends to the Atlantic Ocean. In between there is only a few small estancias or townson the Carretera Austral. From the first time I was there I’ve always wondered why this glacier was so little known in the mountaineering world, there are mountains and walls but if we exclude Mount San Valentin, the highest peak in Patagonia, very few people try to enter the field of Hielo Norte. Curiosity was getting stronger, I needed to know more. ...

Southern summer 2017

The occasion happened just when Paolo Marazzi and I were traveling around Patagonia to climb, a photo of a granite tower appeared on the internet and it seemed to have sprung directly from the ice below, it looked very big but we had no way of verifying how much, it didn't even have a name. It only took us a few moments to understand that the following year we would have been under his shadow.

Christmas 2018

We set things up with a gaucho living in the Soler valley. Going back up the Soler river we would have gained access to the Nef glacier, a strip of ice that descends from the Hielo Norte, and from there we would have climb towards the wall. It sounded simple, but we did not delude ourselves, we knew it would not be. We arrived in the city of Coyhaique, if we were to be lucky the wind that we found upon our arrival would have calmed down before the return of another storm, we had to absolutely take advantage of it. The gaucho however continued to postpone our departure therefore we would have lost the window of good weather. The only solution seemed to be to take a boat ride on Lake Bertrand and walk up the valley with our climbing equipment hoping to take advantage of the two days of good weather. He would horse ride the rest of our food and material the following days. We agreed on where to deposit the gears and with a good dose of confidence mixed with hope we left. The first day was the longest, ten hours on feet under the sun with a heavy load on the shoulders. We arrived in the evening to a wooden hut, we could not ask for better but the rest did not last long.

Day 2

Our aim was to reach the glacier even if we couldn’t see it but we just imagined its position by looking at the map. We reached a mountain pass and went down to the Nef glacier, which was huge. We proceeded but the crevasses were always higher and led us to completely deviate our direction until we could no longer move forward, we had to stop. We left the labyrinth of crevasses late in the afternoon and got ready for the night. A little wind rose in the meantime, a bad sign.

Day 3

We left at dawn even if the hopes of exploiting the window of good weather were drastically lowering. The wind became really strong and we were forced to stop to wait a few hours for it to fall. The window of good weather was shrinking, even if we were to reach the wall it would be too late, so we decided to leave the climbing gears under a stone and left only to see the mountains and understand the approach. We began to see some granite walls even if the lack of references gave us the impression of never approaching them. We reached the 800-meter climb that led to the pass and we found ourselves on a huge frozen plain, finally we were on the Hielo, at an altitude of 1600 meters. Suddenly the gusts of wind stopped, the wind became laminar and very strong. Anything, including our voice, was wiped out and we would have been pushed away too if we didn't have our crampons on. We were surrounded by walls between 600 and 1000 meters tall, it seemed like we were on another planet, everything was white up to the horizon, broken only by granite giants planted in the ice. We had never seen anything like it. The wind, however, was too strong, we quickly took some photos to study the walls and then we run away again back to where we spent the night before.

76

77

Day 4

The following morning we went back to the forest where we miraculously found the storage of food and gears left by the gaucho on horseback. We had been walking for four long days in a row, a hundred kilometers in total, we set up the tent and finally laid down to rest. We woke up the next day under a heavy rain, we were sheltered in tents and had food for three weeks, we just waited for the rain to stop a little in order to go down the valley but in the end we got stuck for another five days. On the third day of forced rest we had the need to move around a bit. Two days later the sun came out and unexpectedly we got a weather update that announced a day and a half of beautiful and windless weather: we knew that this would have been our chance and we carefully chose the gears to bring with us, we couldn’t fail. After two nights we left again towards the glacier with a clear idea of the path to follow. We were definitely going faster, we had no doubts about which valley to choose to descend to the glacier and we knew how to avoid the labyrinth of crevasses. We arrived to the hut in the afternoon and settled down as covered as possible. Just before the alarm went off it started to snow, we watched the sunrise in the sky and then left with all the load on our shoulders, a little late on our schedule. A couple of hours later we stopped as the previous time at the turn of the Nef glacier, the wind was too strong. We tried to find a possible hole between the boulders until we found one that was fairly sheltered, we crawled inside and waited. The clouds went by fast, the weather improved but the gusts had to stop if we wanted to climb to Campo de Hielo. At the first sign of truce we started to go uphill, we traced our track in the fresh snow and again we were on the Hielo. Despite being our second time there once again we were amazed. The environment was different, it was evening, it was quieter and we could relax. We found the most logical line of the mountain and without having enough time to study it better it became dark, we entered our hole in the snow where we spent the night. With the first daylight we climbed the hill that leads to the top of the edge we decided to climb, lucky enough the route was simple and we gained a hundred meters of altitude. Climbing The more we we met the first rays of sun that warmed us and together with the surreal wind calmness they created a climbed the more magical atmosphere. In a few hours we were already the difficulties grew, high on the mountain and we found a hot weather neeven if they were never ver imagined. The more we climbed the more the difexcessive every route ficulties grew, even if they were never excessive every climbed was an effort route climbed was an effort to find the right way or to overcome some icy or overhanging fissure. In the to find the right way end we arrived under the last rock wall, a vertical or to overcomesome 60-meter granite wall. A few moments later we were icy or overhanging both on the mountain, on top of an obelisk on a comfissure. pletely flat glacier in a day of surreal calm. We were In the end we arrived feeling really good but after a few minutes we started thinking about how to go down: we decided to go for under the last rock the edge. We arrived at the base miraculously without wall, a vertical rope joints, we felt lucky and went back where we had 60-meter granite wall. left the bivouac material. We left almost immediately

to take advantage of the last hours of light, we supported each other to try to keep walking to the camp and sleep a few hours. In the morning the weather was still beautiful, we returned to the valley and in the evening went back to the hut. Unfortunately the bad weather finally reached us. We decided to try leaving the next morning anyway, we didn't know how much it could have got worse and for how long, we had ten days of food available and it might have not even been enough. Before leaving we had decided to go down the stream with inflatable dinghies to be independent from the gaucho on horseback, at that moment however it no longer seemed like a good idea but the decision was taken. As soon as I entered the river I realized that I underestimated the situation, the rapids were not dangerous but in a hurry I loaded the weight too high. After an hour what I had feared suddenly happened, Paolino was in front of me in the rapids, I saw him almost disappearing and reappearing a couple of meters later, [...] I was slowing down in order to not get too close when a gust put me sideways. I already knew what was going to happen. I felt the hit and I found myself turned upside down, I stood up and luckily could hit the bottom but the dinghy has been filled with water. With the strength that comes out only in the most tragic situations I turned the heavy dinghy full of water. I saw our most important waterproof bag being carried off by the current, Paolino managed to retrieve it on the spot and saved a few thousand dollars, cameras and documents. It went well.

I already knew what was going to happen. I felt the hit and I found myself turned upside down, I stood up and luckily could hit the bottom but the dinghy has been filled with water.

I was afraid of going back in the water, but I had to do it immediately or else I would have frozen, I was completely soaked and cold. We continued for a few more minutes then we reached an area too low to navigate, so we went down. We knew that almost all the difficulties of this journey had passed, but this ending still put us to test. We left the boats and continued on feet. From then on everything went better, I found a little bit of confidence, we warmed up and the stream accompanied us with a pleasant current up to the lake. We waited a few hours for the boat of the gaucho on the shore of Lake Bertrand, at the end he arrived looking a bit drunk while bringing us some beers, we got on the boat and in a couple of hours we were again like normal tourists.

[...]IT SEEMED LIKE WE WERE O N A N O T H E R P L A N E T, E V E RY T H I N G WAS W H I T E U P T O T H E H O R I Z O N , B R O K E N O N LY BY GRANITE GIANTS PLANTED IN THE ICE. WE HAD NEVER S E E N A N Y T H I N G L I K E I T.

The area I am in is called the Lofoten. It lies within the Arctic circle all the way up in Northern Norway.

I

stop and hear nothing but my own breathing and the fresh snow cracking underneath my skins. Every step I take, another crispy cracking sound. I slowly move forward and look around. One small tree stands tall in a big landscape of mountains and fjords. One tiny small tree, alone by itself, on a hill surrounded by snow and rocks. How can one tree be so stubborn and hang on in this immense landscape? The area I am in is called the Lofoten. It lies within the Arctic circle all the way up in Northern Norway. This group of Islands is the ultimate destination to get back to nature and enjoy human powered snowboarding. Being here, touring here, riding here makes you realize again and again how we humans are part of nature, we are both the stewards of the earth as well as its inhabitants. As much as we sometimes have the arrogance to think differently, we are nature. Most peaks are relatively low and have amazing views on the fjords. Despite the lower altitude you can find all sorts of terrain to ride, from super fun tree runs to steep couloirs next to blue iced frozen waterfalls. It is heaven if you like to experience the elements and the whole theme park mother nature has to offer. There is one road, just the E10 in or the E10 out. It has small branches which just like natural rivers flow in the landscape to get you to the small local communities. There is an alive and great snow scene and a hidden but alive surf community in and around

a little town called Unstad. Arctic cold waves but crystal clear water with wildlife everywhere. The last few days we surfed clean overhead surf, but today I find myself walking up with my splitboard, looking at Nicholas Wolken in front of me. I try to guess how much longer it will take to summit. I both love and hate the walking up, often at the same time. The Lofoten is traditionally an area with communities founded on fish. Local fisherman would go out on their traditional boats where the fish are and not come back till there was enough fish caught. The cod, the fish they mainly live off, is their main export product. Unlike most communities in the world, they live in harmony with nature and the fish they catch, so they take really good care of cod swimming in their Fjords. If cod does not per se ring a bell when you hear it, bacalao might do. When you eat bacalao somewhere in Southern Europe while enjoying a good wine, the chance that it has been caught in these fjords around here is pretty big. I am not here for the fish, as a matter of fact, I do not even like eating fish. I am here to ride my snowboard, but while skinning up, I can’t help but think about the story Oslo local Ingrid from the local Lofoten NGO Folksaksione told me yesterday. Norwegian oil company Equinor has been planning to drill for oil in this area for 10 years, but a small group of locals have been able to block this from happening. Golliat and the Giant is pretty much where I drifted off to, while liste-

How can a small community fight a giant like the oil industry and win? Don’t we use a lot of oil in our daily lives? Does it not make sense to let them drill there to make sure we humans can survive? Those were all questions I have struggled with, but spending time there made me realize even more that we are stuck in a system and the only way out is a system change. Our climate is changing rapidly, it is scary when you read the facts. 97% of scientist say this change in climate is because of human behavior. We are the first generation that feels the climate changing within our life and we are the ones creating this change. When I talk to Maren from the Lofoten Ski lodge (a little hidden gem on the Lofoten where we stayed) if the seasons are changing up north, she explained me how the winters and the summers used to be. They live in a place where the impact from climate change is really felt and visible. It was mid March and I walked wearing nothing more than a merino layer and a R1. 71% of this change in our climate comes from just 100 companies. Statistics like that just blow my mind, but they also give hope, hope that is hard to find when you hear Ingrid talk about those early days 10 years ago when the local community came

in action to stand up against an oil giant. Most of these 100 companies are into fossil fuel extraction, so my hope comes from the fact that we just have to change 100 companies, to have a huge impact. Like many of us, I also struggle thinking that I fly to places, as a matter of fact I fly more than most Europeans do, I occasionally do eat meat, more than often use single use plastic. I do my best to limit this, but also want to live my normal life. Governments and big companies seem to put the change on individual choices. “Use less of this”, “use less of that” and I agree, I should use a lot less of things. But I’m just a part of a whole human population, what does really change when I stop eating meet, stop flying and stop accepting single use plastic? Then I think again about these local fisherman, afraid that their cod will change their path after drilling for oil or testing like in many other parts of the world have happened. These local fisherman and communities fighting to keep their coastlines clean and their ecosystems healthy. Ingrid and they all were also a small part and yet they have managed to change the system and get this oil giant out of their region. Our personal changes should create a system change, with that we should put pressure on our governments to change, on those 100 companies to change. Me and 600 million of people should not take one flight from Amsterdam to the Lofoten to save approx. as much emissions as one coal plant produces a year. It is just scary to hear how many of those exist on our little planet we call home. 60% of all species have become extinct the last 40 years. And if that is not enough, air pol-

If there is a spark of hope, it is within us to put pressure to create that system to change. We can vote with our money, with our choice of energy provider or at elections. Shouldn’t we create this change one step at the time? lution caused by our addiction on fossil fuels, that reason we think we need to accept as offer to live our lives, that air pollution is fast becoming the number 1 cause of death in many countries including many of our western countries. We are not there yet, but for many things there are alternatives already available. Wind and solar energy are available everywhere. Electric cars, you name it. They might not be perfect yet, but they are progress. Isn’t it all about progress over perfection? If there is a spark of hope, it is within us to put pressure to create that system to change. We can vote with our money, with our choice of energy provider or at elections. Shouldn’t we create this change one step at the time? Focus on one obstacle at the time and fix the biggest causes of the issue first? I take another step and get closer to that little tree in the middle of the Lofoten. Nicholas is already on the top and I am here all by myself between rocks and snow next to a little tree. This tree is stubborn enough to hold on, can’t we be all as well? I slowly move forward again, one step at the time. Forward. When one step does not feel solid, I take a little step back and try another step to see if snow and ice hold my edge better. Step by step I reach Nicholas on the summit. I take off my bag, put my jacket on, change my touring setup into a riding setup and put away my skins. Nicholas drops in and I look at his smooth style and flow crushing through this untouched landscape. Pure poetry. There is nothing

better in the world that getting outside and play in nature. I strap in and can’t help but think that I am just a hypocrite by saying or thinking all of this. But aren’t we all? While dropping in I decide I am rather a hypocrite that is part of a change than one that does not do or say anything. My first turn is kind of icy, bit of hard work, I almost slide and lose my edge, but find it back just in time to stay up, the second and third turn are rough and I almost lose an edge again, but then my edge slices through the thin layer of ice and the turns slowly get better and better. At turn 12 I spray my face and can’t help but scream and smile, I look around and hit a small windlip, soft as butter and smooth as sugar. In the lower part the little trees get closer to each others but far enough to manoeuvre smoothly through them. I hit a pillow and fly through the air for a second and then land in deep powder. The run takes me all the way down to the Fjord. With burning feet and a smile like a banana, I make my last turns before hitting the flat on the beach. Warm, happy and smiling like a child in a candy shop. Within a second, I realize there is only one thing to do and look at Nicholas. I strip off all my gear, drop it in the snow and run butt naked in the freezing cold water. I feel as if small needles stick in my skin but I ignore the cold and keep running and take a dive. This is cold but man, it does feel great. Just like the struggle against climate change, it hurts, the start is not too smooth, but man, it will be all worth.

ranziska and Martin are both originally from Innsbruck and yet they had never met each others before. Their first meeting took place in Laces, in Val Venosta, on the border between Italy and Austria. Not far from Merano and from the Adige river, the place is surrounded on the south by the Ortler Alps, while in the north stand the Ötztal Alps. A part of the territory is included in the Stelvio National Park and the highest peak is the Hasenöhrl, with its 3,257 meters high.

They both tried to escape from the cold winter, even though it was already coming to an end. But in Austria the snow was still high and thick. The ski mountaineering season was coming to an end, and they both decided to leave the cliffs near home that were still icy and wet, cross the Brenner Pass and reach Italy, to finally say goodbye to winter and, why not, also to enjoy the Italian weather and a good pizza after the climb. Although the day was not the sunniest, it seemed like springtime has already arrived in South Tyrol. The location, in fact, squeezed between the two high mountain ranges, makes the climate drier than the regional average (about 500 mm of rainfall per year compared to the 900 mm of Innsbruck) and allows everyone to benefit of a greater number of hours of sunshine per day than to the average of the entire Alpine arc. Thanks to the southern exposure, even in December it is possible to climb in the sunlight until 3 pm. That’s why it represents an ideal destination for sunny winter days. This translates into a large number of outdoor activities that can be practiced over there like running, hiking, skiing, and then ending the day with some nice drinks in Merano where, even if the sun is low on the horizon, you can still sit quietly just wearing a tee shirt. But Franziska and Martin were there to climb. With its spectacular peaks above 3000 m of altitude, Val Venosta is a paradise for vertical lovers. A favorite destination for many climbing and via ferrata enthusiasts since it always offer unmissable experiences. Laces, in particular, provides a real rock gym with 78 different paths, strips, holes, plates: all made by a thick gneis. The Laces cliff is one of the largest and most popular of the entire valley and is divided into two sectors. "Alpingeschichte" suitable for less secure climbers and the "Latsch Vegas" for more experienced ones. This place for Franziska and Martin was a real playground where they trained and had fun until darkness fell over the valley. It was time to go back to Innsbruck but with the promise of meeting again in South Tyrol or, why not, even close to home, in Ötztal or Zillertal, Tyrol, to climb together again.

It is like a real dancer, meaning it wraps you foot blocking it during the heeling thanks to a Velcro band. The construction of the heel is very innovative, it uses a very snug and anti-neckline ultra adherent rubber with shell construction features but with the sensitivity of a traditional construction heel. It is ideal for heeling and back hooks, the ultra-tight rubber is also in the front part of the foot pocket to better face the top hooks. SA L E WA WILDFIRE EDGE This shoe redefines the Approach category. Its system, the Switchfit, allows you to climb with precision and walk comfortably. And to go back to the excursion setting, just bring the strings back into the standard eyelets, in this way your fingers will have more space again, ready to walk. To emphasize climbing skills, the sole incorporates a plate just under the fingers, for greater rigidity, while the rest of the sole is flexible, to ensure the natural movement of the foot. It can be used on any terrain, dry or wet, thanks to the Pomoca Speed MTN sole that guarantees an excellent grip and clutch.

S CA R PA ARPIA A multi-purpose climbing shoe that can be used in any situation, from indoor climbing to multi-pitch climbing. [...] The charm of Murazzi has never died. The contrast between the placid and uncaring flow of the river and the crossed clubs alternating on its banks creates a singular but at the same time fascinating effect. Running there produces special and unexpected results.

Murazzi, or Murass in Piedmont dialect, historically are the landings, the arcades and the remittances of the boats on the west bank of the river Po, near the center of Turin. These historical “walls” have been abandoned and neglected for years until the 70s, when a plan to redevelop the area began. Murazzi was then relaunched by offering, among other things, the granting of licenses to open pubs and clubs in order to attract young guys in the area, especially during night time. Within a few years, Murazzi have therefore become one of the Turin's nightlife place to be, one of the most important places for young people, so famous that it crossed the city's boundaries and reached national and international fame due to its unique and atypical nature on the European scene. There people gathered just for one reason, to party. Until 2012. From that year an investigation by the Turin judiciary led to the gradual closing of most of the clubs due to various administrative and sanitary irregularities, as well as the risk of floods and downpours, that raising the level of the river, would have involved the flooding of the clubs on the banks. Still, most of them have not yet reopened. But the charm of Murazzi has never died. The contrast between the placid and uncaring flow of the river and the crossed clubs alternating on its banks creates a singular but at the same time fascinating effect. Running there produces special and unexpected results. Today, at Murazzi, are running Francesco, Marco and Gianmaria. Francesco Allemano is a 32 years guy living in Saluzzo. His story, however, begins in Ecuador where he was born and then adopted at the age of 2 by his Italian parents. In 2017 he graduated as a professional educator, a job he still practices in a social cooperative in Cuneo. In the future he would like to take care of the organization of events and maybe even open a center where face different social issues following the educational method. Francesco, during his life, has practiced many sports, from skiing to judo to athletics and now triathlon. Running means lightness and a sense of freedom, practicing sports helps him to relieve the stress of the working day and at the same time get to know new people and new sports realities. He tries to find the right balance both in life, in sport and in nutrition “but sometimes indulging in a bad habit does not hurt!” Traveling makes him feel free, just like running, a sport that would open everyone’s mind in his opinion. Marco Lingua is from Savigliano, near Cuneo, he loves pizza but hates waste in all its forms. In his everyday life he divides himself between his engineering studies at the Turin Politecnico univeristy and his sports career as a cyclist and amateur runner. He started running almost as a joke when he was 7 because he loved to immerse himself into nature. His dream is to work in the field of sports gears. Gianmaria Piutti instead is 37 years old and was born in Turin. He loves all the outdoor sports and tries to combine them with healthy foods, with a particular predisposition for desserts, “better an ice cream than a pizza!” Looking for his own space and a place where he can feel well is what he pursues in practicing outdoor sports, whether it is an early morning run or a late at night stroll in the middle of a forest, Gianmaria lives for this. Therefore he does not like when this does not happen and those who get in his way when following his goal. He started running, like many others, to get back in shape. Now he simply runs because it makes him feel good and allows him to get a sense of peace and freedom leading to reflection. What will he do in the near future? “I don't know, I'm still building the answer.”

H O K A O N EO N E CLIFTON 5 Hoka One One is a brand that offers very durable products favoring comfort and performance. True to their award-winning heritage, the Clifton 5 are light, comfortable and very fast, ideal for those looking for durable shoes for long trips and lightness at the same time. The design focuses on the famous geometry of the Hoka One One midsole in addition to a reliable foam rubber package that ensures constant cushioning during the life of the shoe. Your run will be soft and fluid. In the end you can find a revisited upper, including reinforced eyelets, fewer overlapping layers and a new mesh designed to improve perspiration. The midsole features a full-length Eva foam and rocker geometry. The foam is designed to be soft and responsive, while the rockered shape helps the forward boost. Fast and comfortable, it is the ideal shoe for your daily run.

UNDER ARMOUR

HOVR INFINITE

A neutral running shoe, with cushioning, rebound, durability and efficiency. Ideal for any occasion, for any kind of run and for every distance up to recovery days. It is the perfect choice for those looking for the right balance between flexibility, cushioning and versatility; and for those who want to improve their performance. UA through the Record Sensor technology records, analyzes and stores all data relating to the run. The structured mesh upper, very light and breathable, provides excellent support at strategic points and has many reflective elements for running in low light conditions. While the die-cut EVA midsole adapts to the shape of the foot in order to prevent slippage and offer optimal comfort to the sole of the foot. It is a high-mileage shoe featuring a sole with rather thick rectangular blocks under the feet to ensure support and deep grooves that cross the shoe to increase flexibility. In addition, the UA Hovr technology helps the return of energy, reducing the impact on the ground at every single step.

NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM 1080V9 Characterized by a Fresh Foam midsole, more cushioned than the previous model, the 1080v9 is ideal for those looking for a soft and high quality run. The Fresh Foam of the midsole, is a soft foam that adapts to the shape of the foot, produced with a single mold and in a single compound, it is also laser-cut to remove superfluous weight. It has a wraparound construction that helps maintain a snug fit, a knitted double jackard upper and an Ultraheel construction on the back of the foot for greater breathability and better support. When you want to slow down a moment, the wide and flat forefoot offers a stable platform to push on. The comfort is remarkable and the run, besides being soft and cushioned, remains light and rather reactive. There are some news even on the outer sole, where the Blown Rubber material has been incorporated: a compound that offers extraordinary lightness and flexibility and that increases the cushioning capacity of the shoe.

«We all strive for safety, prosperity, comfort, long life, and dullness. The deer strives with his supple legs, the cowman with trap and poison, the statesman with pen, the most of us with machines, votes, and dollars, but it all comes to the same thing: peace in our time. A measure of success in this is all well enough, and perhaps is a requisite to objective thinking, but too much safety seems to yield only danger in the long run. Perhaps this is behind Thoreau's dictum: “In wildness is the salvation of the world”. Perhaps this is the hidden meaning in the howl of the wolf, long known among mountains, but seldom perceived among men.»

“Thinking like a mountain” is one of the most powerful text contained in "A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold, a manifesto of modern environmentalism. An exhortation, addressed to today’s man, in order to transcend the anthropocentric point of view and contemplate nature and the creatures that live in it as an organism endowed with balance, harmony and beauty - from which depends our own integrity and health. This collection of texts was conceived during an intense life, dedicated to the practice of the wild and the forest. Forester, ecologist and environmentalist, practicing a "wilderness" that became a world philosophy, a popularizer of the ethics of the Earth, Aldo Leopold describes how the balance between nature and humanity lies in conservation, not in senseless exploitation of resources. A revolutionary reading, even today and above all today, sixty years later. Not having listened to masters like George Perkins Marsh or Henry David Thoreau, John Muir or Wallace Stegner was a serious mistake. Let's try to change our culture, our way of thinking, our actions. In respect of the Earth that hosts us.
