I’ve never seen Shaun White crying. In that beautiful reaction, in that crying, in that emotion release and relief was everything that he had to swallow down after his fourth placement at Sochi 2014 - for a competitive athlete like Shaun White that fourth place was like dying inside. You do not expect a fourth place after winning two consecutive gold - you expect to win anyway, no matter what. But four years ago Shaun had everything wrong: the preparation in slopestyle had been rushed and he never reached the same level of his other opponents, in fact he had retired (retired! One like him who retires, who figure) after the first day of training complaining that the features were too much “big and dangerous” (and many made fun of him), so he then went training in the pipe but it was too late... in short, he got just everything wrong. He had trusted himself too much and other people who had misdirected him. At that time, who among us had not thought “OK, Shaun White is over.” He became a musician, he did something else, the entrepreneur, he bought the Air&Style company, a resort in California and all that went with it.

Instead he came back, stronger than before. And even more humane, if you want.

In those tears there is all his desire to show the world to be the best - of all time. He returned to doing what he had begun to do: winning. Back to the Roots, for real.

DC presents this new boot with a classic lacing and an original shape. According to DC, designers were inspired by 90s snowboarding, where tweak was everything; the asymmetrical lacing is therefore desired to give the rider a greater possibility of bending without compromising the lateral support. Tucknee is also equipped with a comfortable upper strap to implement the seal at the top of the knee-highs.

Another novelty in terms of bindings is that of Nitro, which introduces its quick attack based on the Clicker platform. For the most successful, Clicker is a technology that had already given rise to several rapid systems a decade ago. Well, this technology has been resumed and now, thanks to a totally new design and updated to the needs of modern snowboarding, it is ready to get back on track with the historic brand of the viewfinder.

K2 enters the Split Board bindings market with this Far Out. Despite being the first model for touring, it has been really well designed and adopts a quick and safe release system, based on two slides placed under the chassis within which the interface fixed to the board flows. Even the Highback is collapsible outwards to facilitate the ascent. The total weight is contained thanks to the minimal frame and the straps reduced to a minimum.

Famous Canadian Glove company Auclair drops the first pro Model dedicated to Canadian Champ and Olympic athlete Max Parrot.

The Parrot mitt comes in two different versions, MP 50-50 Camo and MP Stoked Camo.

Both of them are made with Thinsulate Type J membrane for granted waterproofing and breathability. Max wanted a camo pattern because he’s always hunting for titles.

1.SALOMON 6 PIECE X CRAB GRAB Following a trend that seems to be in style in these last years of revival, Salomon presents the 6 piece, a board with a shape inspired to the 90s and designed by Chris Grenier, created in collaboration with Crab Grab and designed by David Steigerwald. The board features a rockout camber with accentuated rocker sections for better presses. Of course, the Crab Grab traction pads are included.

4 . BATALEON X BYNDXMDLS BYNDXMDLS, contracted form of Beyond Medals, is a project born almost as a joke by Bataleon rider Tor Lundstrom and his friend Kevin Backstrom. This growing project has become a phenomenon of custom and a series of videos that have won a TWS award, a line of apparel that boasts collab with different brands, last of which with Bataleon who presented the Goliath with custom graphics and the Claim Vacation Forever in an insole.

Other notable collab for the 2018/19 season is the one between ThirtyTwo, authority of snowboard footwear and Santa Cruz, skateboarding legendary brand. The skate background is the guiding thread, as Thirtytwo was born as spin-off snowboard of the Sun Technology group (Etnies, E’s, Emerica, Altamont) and is realized in boot lashed and a series of apparel and outerwear with the legendary Screaming Hand.

Austin Smith and Bryan Fox are the minds behind Drink Water, a bit of a product and a lot more movement against the advertising and abuse of energy drinks and more generally to encourage riders to consider a healthier lifestyle. Being both Nitro riders, the collaboration was born almost spontaneously; for the next season a Team Binding branded with the famous “tap” will be available.

The historic bindings company from the land of the rising sun not only presents the new line of boots signed Flux, but fielding four different juicy collabs: the first with the historic Californian Punk band Pennywise that has made the soundtrack to countless snowboards movies, the second with the skateboarding legend Christian Hosoi, then with the Aussie Motorcycle Custom House Deus Ex Machina and finally with the pro surfer Tyler Warren: there is something for everyone.

The Austrian boot company Deeluxe brings out this interesting collaboration with the Japanese crew WOW (weekly of Weird), famous for their fun way of understanding snowboarding and life in general. To celebrate this collaboration, the freestyle boot ID 7.1 was chosen, which in addition to showing the crew logo on the upper, is made up of two different and opposite colors: one black and one white. In your face.

But Roxy went further, using the Silky Smooth Bio Fiber in the Torah Bright and Smoothie models, which in addition to being an organic material, optimizes the absorption of vibrations and increases the elasticity of the core, which translates into better reactivity.

ARBOR RETURNING TO ROOTS Since its inception, Arbor Collective has always donated part of its income to associations that work for the protection and restoration of forests. Which was the reason that brought you to you opened a snowboard shop? We opened our shop for the love of the sport! We opened our first store in 1989 after ordering to our garage for two years pretending to be a store to get the boards we wanted which hardly were available in Switzerland then (snowboards and then skateboards). We never really thought of opening a shop, but then the shoplife chose us!

Which are the next thing in snowboarding in your opinion?

I think the next big thing is making snowboarding fun again! We’ve been closely following and supporting the trends of banked slaloms (Suddenrush Laax), supercarving (Korua), strange shapes and side hits. It’s my opinion that people are taking up or returning to snowboarding because it is just so much more fun than other wintersports.

Which are the activities you propose to your customers? We have a lot of activities, from small releases and exhibitions in-store to on-snow tests and alternative contests like the banked slaloms or our Snow Safari which build on taking part and having fun rather

than winning. Have a look on our Instagram or Facebook accounts for some of the fun!

Web Shop VS Brick&Mortar shop. Which is your opinion? We believe strongly in brick&mortar and that is our background, but you need a good webshop to complement and support the experience.

Nowadays you need both to drive sales, but nothing beats visiting a store to get the proper advice to buy the right equipment Your 5 top brands? Volcom, Burton, Capita, Gnu, Lib Tech but it all depends on which category.

Which is the social-cultural meaning of a snowboard shop in 2018? We always see the shop as a melting pot, a meeting point of the scene, be it skateboard or snowboard. Every day kids come by to see the newest gear, have a chat, watch a video or just meet up before going on a session. So yes, I would say that the shop is an important cornerstone of the scene, both snowboard and skateboard.

Which was the reason that brought you to you opened a snowboard shop? We were travelling and doing a season snowboarding in Queenstown, New Zealand in 2004 and were amazed and inspired by the shops over there. Shops such as Quest in Queenstown seemed to get the balance of style and accessibility right and we thought we could bring something similar back home.

Web Shop VS Brick&Mortar shop. Which is your opinion? The internet is obviously a great way to access information but for anyone lucky enough to have a shop local to them then its bricks and mortar all day long. To be able to get advice, try stuff and be part of a community is invaluable. As for our business 80% is Bricks and Mortar and we hope it continues this way. We enjoy helping customers get exactly what they want and need and have met many amazing people since we opened in 2006.

Which are the next thing in snowboarding in your opinion? It’s cool to see brands pushing each other to come up with new innovations. Burton’s new Step On system is a great example of this and we’ll be excited to see how it changes the market. As for snowboards, interesting directional shapes designed for stylish hard carving are the future!

Which is the social-cultural meaning of a snowboard shop in 2018? It’s all about community. Most people only get to go away for a week or two a year, but spend so much more time thinking about it than that. Your local shop is somewhere you can go to get excited and keep the stoke going.

Which are the activities you propose to your customers?

The majority of our customers are snowboarders but we also have plenty of skiers who shop with us. In the summer months surf and wakeboard is where it’s at.

The tree family in the Burton house is always growing: five new models in the new Family Tree division for the 2019 season. Here we have the Stunt Gun, whose name already clearly describes what this board is dedicated to. The Short Effect Edge together with the hybrid camber that sees rocker in the rear section and camber under the front binding make it a fun medium for all terrains, beaten or not.

The Shtik represents a new concept of a park board that refers to solutions well known in the 90s, i.e. long effective edges and very short tips, but with a shape suitable for modern riding, so to be agile and versatile to perform even in conduction. This board should be chosen 5-6 cm shorter than the one you are used to riding. The Cam Out camber and soft flex make it extremely playful.

The Team is absolutely the most versatile board in the Drake collection, and is back in 2019 with a brand new sober suit and a load of technology that makes it the ultimate Pro Choice: Sintra 8000 base and a shape with a fast but stable edge change for particularly deep landings.

Manifest can be defined as a board for “searchers and seekers�. This is because it feels at home on all the terrains where you will bring it. The directional camber that combines rocker areas on the tips offers floatation and conduction on both smooth or beaten tracks, while the Triax ICG20 and Carbon DarkWeb make it stable at high speeds. An all-mountain par excellence.

The flagship board of the American company, the National is the favorite weapon of the legendary Bjorn Leines for any terrain, from powder to Snowbird groomers through park laps in Brighton. The fate of Fredi Kalbermatten and Nicolas Mueller have always been linked by a subtle but tangible “fil rouge”. Grown up both in the same team, they got divided for a while and then found themselves both at the Mervin house. Fredi’s board is designed for big mountain charging a bit like Nicolas’, to face the whole mountain like a snowpark.

The directional C3 camber guarantees pop and forgiveness at the same time and on all terrains, with an elongated nose and rocker for powder.

Company of the Mervin house, which guarantees quality, credibility and sustainability in the production processes, Gnu has always proposed boards of great character. This Mullair, pro model of the big mountain freestyle legend Nicolas Mueller, who wanted a stick to bring his unique style all over the mountain, does not fail.

Directional shape and camber owner C3 for a board to grind powder but not only, just as Nicolas does... well, you sort of.

That the Pig was a special board we had already noticed during the Hintertux test last October. For the 2019 season, Ride returns with an entire “Pig Collection”, which includes this MTN Pig, which aims to be an even more performing version of the older sister Warpig, thanks to the carbon slimewalls that make the handling stable and precise. The Twin Pig, a more freestyle version of the original, is also available.

by Romain De Marchi and Benji Ritchie team riders, this board features a Cam Rock 2-42 profile (a lighter rocker than the classic banana) and a Carbon Powerdrive core to take on powder, groomers or park and take off at every side hit. The underbite profile ensures an effective edge grip.

Capita emerges victorious again from ISPO 2018 thanks to the Springbreak SB twin.

The Nidecker Area is called the board for carvers who want to have fun all over the place.

The radius of the sidecut is not exasperated so even the new initiates to the art of the turn will find themselves at ease, moreover the board is suitable for both the beaten tracks, but it works well in powder too, with optimal riding performance and floating properties. The design was created in collaboration with the Swiss photographer David Carlier.

The very much Italian Funky, a European snowboard pioneer in the early 80s and a promoter of quality since the day zero of her second life, presents an increasingly complete line among which there’s one of the most successful boards in the collection, the Spray. For creative freestylers, the Spray is a fun board but at the same performance, either for flat tricks, power turns or days in the park.

New board but also new concept for Korua with this Otto. This one was created for creative carving towards freestyle, and is equipped with the longest tail and the least setback of the Korua range, a symptom that is perfect even for a park use. You read it correctly, always remaining faithful to their origins, Korua now also approaches those who want a stick to have fun turning but do not disdain two lines in the park.

Stone is a very interesting French brand with the right ideas to float on the modern market, just as Barrel is made to float and have fun on any terrain, tons of fresh snow or just a splash, icy groomers or spring snow.

Barrel is short and squat, floats and bends quickly on any terrain.

A California-based core company founded in 2002, Academy has always carried forward the concept of producing in the US and supporting the local scene. That’s why in these days you see Anthony Mazzotti going nuts at Bear Mtn aboard this flat camber board with a design that recalls a famous American chain. Ah, the Academy is built in Never Summer, Colorado.

Born from the minds of the founders of Never Summer Tim and Stacey Canaday, the Shaper Twin embodies the essence of riding. By their own admission the Shaper Twin is a really different board for how it handles entering the corners, exiting and the riding in between, all in the name of smoothness. That said, however, it is also a board suitable for all terrain.

Borealis is a small company born in the French Alps in 2013, with some English blood. Their boards are all made of high quality materials and a special eye for sustainability. The Shaman is their do-it-all board, equipped with the sidewawes 5.0 system that guarantees an edge grip, bamboo topsheet to absorb vibrations and optimize the pop and finally hybrid camber with parabolic rocker on the entire length and camber under both bindings.

The Salomon Assassin is back even more versatile with a directional shape and a huge list of technologies making it an al 360° freestyle machine. Quadralizer Sidecut, Popster Eco Booster and Royal Cork Rails, along with wide and lifted tips make the Assassin fairly good in powder, park or groomers. Available in two different colorways.

The CTP Achab of the Swiss brand West is a board designed for technical freeride or big mountain freestyle, however you want to define it. Basically this board is made to float in powder but has enough pop and responsiveness to get some trick done in case of lips or cliff during the descent. The shape is twin so you are not in trouble if you land in fakie, but do not be fooled by the outline, because this board is a real powder slaughter in the DNA.

LAAX OPEN The Laax Open is one of the most popular and interesting events to watch, but above all - to live.

Especially this year there was one more reason for spectators and riders: it was the last qualifying event before the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games: for this reason all the best riders in the world rushed to Laax, sure it would be an unforgettable sight. But the Laax Open, unlike many other events of the genre, are not only a week of high-level contest, but a real 360° show that starts from the top of the mountains and ends in the village, with events every night in every corner of the village based on live concerts, art exhibitions, aperitifs, dinners, tightrope walkers, parties with internationally renowned DJs. All events respect the quality standard required by a place like Laax, one of the best resorts in the world but with a young and engaging freestyle soul. The structures that characterize Laax are flashy and absolutely trendy, like the Gondelhalle, restaurant and bar, which is renewed every year with a different theme, offering a high-level

cuisine, evening shows and lots of fun; or like THE Galaaxy, shelter on top of Crap Sogn Gion, which looks like a camouflage spacecraft from Star Trek, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view seasoned by live shows, all inserted into a frame based on aliens, three-meter-high robots that autonomously play musical instruments and all that weirdness that can get through your mind.

In Laax there are places for everyone, like the famous Indy Club, where snowboarding lives on walls and tables and not just in the name, a meeting place for a beer after the day at the park or on the slopes, or in the evening for live music... or for a Beer Pong tournament. POWDERSURFING

A NEW FRONTIER I would say that we all agree more or less on the fact that rediscovery of fundamental values ​​and the origins of snowboarding is an important reality nowadays.

The shaping of the boards was the first sign of this trend: at first the blunted tips (ie noses and square tails, back in vogue in the early 90s and originally form that remained from sawing noses and swallow tails as they used to do first freestylers who wanted a snow skateboard), then slowly the rocket shapes were rediscovered from powder (and from there they went back to study the arrangement of the volumes for an optimal float, obtaining the technology that K2 calls Volume Shift) and to the side powdersurfing has also grown, otherwise defined by some no-boarding.

In the end, what is powdersurf if not the embryonic version of snowboarding? When the good Sherman Poppen (or whoever before him - the debate is still open) came up with jumping off the slope with an axle to which he had fixed a string on the nose, he had done it on what was in the end a powdersurf: clearly the technology has evolved and today the powdersurfs are much more than wooden boards, borrowing a bit of technology from surfing and a bit from snowboarding. Wolle Nyvelt, a long-time pro Salomon, was one of the first European names to believe in powdersurfing and created his Äsmo brand. In Japan, the official homeland of powdersurfing, the pioneer Taro Tamai - also owner of Gentemstick – gave a cultural and philosophical

foundation, as well as technical, to powdersurfing. Then there have been many others: Grassroots, Konvoi, Pogo (also a historic German snowboard company), Nadasurf, Stoney, the Italian Footprint: it is in fact a discipline that is catching on and certainly a completely different way of slipping across the snow.

But how does a powdersurf work? Let’s start by explaining that powdersurf is a board for fresh snow and is not suitable for hard snow, because it does not have any edges. In powdersurf there are no bindings, so the foot is free and held back only by the friction that the boot makes on the pad; normally a leash ensures the board to the leg in case of falls. Practically the riding sensation is very similar to surfing, in fact the powdersurf is designed just to float on the snow.

We mentioned the boots: what boots in powdersurfing? Of course it goes without saying that quite soft snowboard boots can do well, but given the growing interest in boots companies, they have come to the powdersurfing market, creating shoes specifically designed for the purpose: we mention K2, which since last season offers the pro model boot of the Japanese legend powdersurfing pioneer Taro Tamai, complete with closing Boa,

What’s the difference with snowboard boots? Consider that the movement of the ankle in the powdersurfing is essential to correctly set carving, so the specific boots admit a greater flexion for a better control of the board. The second difference lies in the insole, which must be designed to maintain optimal grip on EVA pads rather than on snow.

Finally, the pad, ie the upper material that provides grip with the boots: there are those who use real pads EVA (same material of the pads of snowboard bindings) with studs or who, like Footprint, layers of neoprene (the material of surfing suits) that remains much thinner as a skate griptape and does not bond with the snow, making it perfect for the purpose.

And finally, how are these powederboards made? We asked Lorenzo Boutall of Footprint, with whom, among other things, Sequence Mag will perform a collaborative powdersurf. “Unlike snowboards, which are usually made more or less with the same technology, with powdersurf a whole new world opens up: for the most part the cores are made of wood, but there are brands that use fiberglass. For the base there are different currents of thought: those who use the P-Tex (same material as snowboards) or who, like us at Footprint for example, who makes their own wooden boards, for greater sustainability and harmony with the nature element. MAKING A POWDERSURFING

SEQUENCE X FOOTPRINT We discovered the process of building the Sequence board in the lab, where the Footprint team create their powdersurfs, 100% handmade, how it should be done.

1. Glueing and Bonding: First of all we spread the glue on our wood layers and place one layer on top the other to create our horizontally laminated board sandwich. The sandwich then goes into the press at high pressure for 24 hours allowing the mould to define the rocker and the bottom contours. When it is ready we release the press and extract the blank board.

2. Drawing the Outline: We mark the centre line on the blank boards.

With the help of pre-cut templates we hand draw the board shape we want. In this process we define the nose and tail type, length and width.

Once the drawing is ready, we make a rough cut out of the blank board.

3. Cutting and Shaping: We take the rough-cut blank board to the shaping stand and we define its shape using exclusively hand tools. To create the best rail shape we use hand planes, rasps and files.

4. Carving the Channels: On the bottom of the shaped bo-

ard we draw the channel placement with the perfect angle.

Most of our boards have a quad channel setup that increases their manoeuvrability and edge control. We hand engrave and shape the channels into the bottom layer of the board using sharp chisels.

5. Treatment and Graphics: We treat all our boards with non-toxic, environmentally friendly, anti-deterioration agents that protect the wood from wear. We apply the protecting agent by hand to ensure it penetrates fully into the wood pores. We brush paint the graphics one by one to give them an extra handmade feel. We only use water based paints that we mix in our lab. We screen print the logo directly on the top layer.

6. Protection Finish: After completing the graphic and printing the logo we apply several layers of protective top coat for a smooth and clear finish.

Where does the collaboration with the illustrations of Will come from? First time I met Will maybe four years ago, he was not really drawing or anything. That’s when we went to Japan two years ago that I saw a little sketch book where he was drawing funny characters, faces and daily skate life objects. Then we went to Moscow last winter for the new Vans First Layer project. He was drawing every day and I could see the progression he got over the years, he has kind of his own style now so I just said “Hey Will let’s do a collab for the new project! Are you keen on it?”. He was stressed at first but really happy about the proposal I think. I’m glad we got something nice like this!

Explain to me the project in detail. Did the collaboration go well? I wanted to have a DIY feel, because we were in Russia and everything was a bit ghetto so I was looking for a similar vibe. I made a 30-shot selection that I printed with a black and white xerox and organise them as a “Zine”. I sent all the paper sheets to Will to play around with them. Two weeks later he sent me back everything and that was it pretty much. The only direction I gave him was just to do a work that doesn’t look like what Lucas Beaufort is doing. It doesn’t make sense if it’s too similar or in the same vibe.

What kind of person is Will? Will is very shy at first and doesn’t look like the American Will Smith. He is pretty much the opposite, not very tall, super white (yeah, he is English) and he has a strong English accent that you need time to understand well. He is a talented rider and I can say now that he is also very talented at drawing things.

In your works you often go besides photography. For this project what does it mean to you collaborate with an illustrator? Yeah I just think we are surrounded by great people in our different “sports” like snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and a some riders make great arts, there is a good energy from travelling around the world. So whenever it’s possible I think it’s nice to do some collabs and mix stuff together. I like analog photography and I like crafted stuff, far from computer and pixels, so I’m very happy when we can do some real things that exists in real life, like this collab. Every page is a painting itself, and there is only one in the world.

Do you have any similar project in progress? No collabs on the pan but I’ll keep writing or scratching or destroying some of my photos by hands or with chemical product like bleach etc.

Two names, two of the biggest stories that made snowboarding one of the most-viewed and debated sports at these Olympic Games 2018.

Two main characters who can’t possibly be more distant one another, yet so similar in some way. Shaun and Ester. Back to the roots (Shaun) and beyond (Ester).

And then Jamie Anderson, who collected other two Olympic medals in four-year span (and now she’s up to three in total).

And Torgeir Bergrem and his switch bs 5 to method – absolutely the sickest trick of the entire Games.

And Anna Gasser with her backside 10 double cork and cab 10 double cork. Never attempted before by a girl in the same contest. Never been such a good, good female contest. On this topic, what happened in ladies’ slopestyle was a shame (too wind yet not too much for the organisers to call off the contest), a pity and most of all a loss chance for everyone.

And Mark McMorris going from bed with a life-threatening injury to bronze in less than one year. Grateful, forever.

But I don’t want to annoy you with my thoughts about the Olympics. I just want to let them speak. You might understand more of the characters involved.

Imagine being one of the losers to Ledecka. One of those skiers. You train for most of your life and then somebody else comes from a hatred sport like snowboarding and wins your event. “When I’m with the snowboarders I say ‘damn skiers’ and when I’m with the skiers I say ‘damn snowboarders’ (laughs).” On looking like she is having fun when she is competing: “For sure, I feel this is one of my biggest advantages. As long as I have fun, it’s very special. Not all the girls have this every time.”

In typical fashion, Billy Morgan celebrated by cracking open an imaginary can of beer - or “frosto” as he called it - to salute his snowboard teammates who had flocked to the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre to cheer him on. Some were reduced to tears, which in itself quite appealed to Billy’s sense of humour. “Weird, isn’t it?” he chuckled. “I started snowboarding for the sheer love of it, on the plastic, went and did seasons away, developed my skill without knowing it and joined the British team with a great bunch of mates who would cruise around the world together doing super-fun stuff,” he reflected. “We get to snowboard for a living. It’s been a wild ride and to finish it like this is the best.”

Interesting quote with Shaun White while being interviewed: Can we call you the greatest snowboarder of all times?

“Yeah, you can do that. I wouldn’t disagree with that.”

Well, I would. There are surely greater snowboarder-snowboarder like Travis, Nico, Gigi and so on.

Shaun is instead surely the greatest athlete-snowboarder of our “sport”, if we can call it like this. Nobody has ever gone through that kind of pressure, and come out shining on top so many times on the biggest stage. Shaun has something about winning or dying for like the greatest of any sport in general (Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, Valentino Rossi, Roger Fderer... these kinds of demi-gods). So, yes, I would disagree with that, but I didn’t tell him. I’m not that kind of demi-god. I wanna stay alive.

Shaun: ““Man, three gold medals. My fourth Olympics. Thank you, I’m feeling blessed. I was very upset by my performance in Sochi and I had to wait for so long to get to these Olympics with ups and downs along the way.”

On the differences between his Olympic Games golds: “I wanted this really bad. I still have stitches in my tongue. I think the first time I went to the Olympics, it was amazing because it was the Olympics. I was so happy to win and I cried because of all the hard work from my childhood when people were telling me I wasn’t going to amount to anything and suddenly I was Olympic champion.”

“After that it was all about cementing that ‘I’m the guy’. After the second gold won at the Vancouver 2010 Games, it was really tough. I was trying to win after winning and I decided to join a band, I took on slopestyle all in the same year that I was slowly losing motivation and it was rough. I’m thankful I was able to then find the love for the sport again.”

On the future and the possibility of competing in skateboarding at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: “I think I will carry on. My big choice now is whether to go for the Summer Games or not.

I’m excited about it. The motivation will be there. Yeah, I really do think I could be competitive.

It’s like this muscle memory. A lot of tricks here are very similar to skateboarding. I really think I’ve got a great shot.”

Tell us how did the idea of producing a snowboard team video right now come out? To be precise, the first ever Vans snowboard team video? For me, it all started out when Jake Kuzyk got on the team. I was filming with Jed Anderson at the time for Crazy Loco and Jake asked me put together a “Welcome to the Team” clip for Vans. It was super mellow, Vans kind of just let us do our thing. We filmed for the welcome clip for over a month or so in Montreal and Minnesota. That was a really cool experience, and it helped get my foot in the door at Vans. The following winter, Vans put on a bunch of new dudes on the global snow team – Mike Rav, Blake Paul, Dillon Ojo, Sam Taxwood, and Danimals. Those guys are the best.

They rounded out the team that Vans already had going with guys like Pat, Darrell, Guch, etc. Cole Navin was a last minute addition as well. Once they were on the team, it was like yeah we need to make a movie, the time is right. I think Vans had been thinking of doing a snowboard video for quite some time. Especially with Propeller coming out it just seemed inevitable for them to make a full-length snowboard video. It seemed really natural how the whole thing came together.

even know what a landline is, because they just have cell phones, which I think is super funny. To me, that’s sort of what the full length snowboard video is nowadays, just some old school way of communicating with people. Everything comes out so fast with the internet and Instagram. There aren’t as many full-length snowboard films coming out as there used to be. Maybe it doesn’t even make sense for there to be a whole bunch of snowboard videos, but I think it’s important that they exist on some level.

More than anything, we wanted the title to give a feeling of some kind. To me, the idea of a landline is nostalgic, it reminds me of growing up. We wanted to movie to feel nostalgic in that same way, we wanted it to feel like something that could have been made 15 years ago.

What about the absolutely radical idea of filming with 16mm in the digital era? Every snowboard movie I grew up on was shot on film. All the old Robot Food movies, Absinthe, Kingpin, etc. It looks so sick. I don’t really keep up on movies the way I used to, but I still go back and watch those old ones all the time. We really wanted to emulate those old videos and go for that same feeling. All the filmers including myself, Jake Price, Harry Hagan, Hayden Rensch, and Skylar Brent, wanted to shoot 16mm and luckily Kodak and Vans were down to support that.

And what about its name, Landline? I honestly can’t make a connection with a snowboard video... Landlines are this weird old school ways of communicating with people. Maybe some people still have them in their home, maybe they don’t. Some kid growing up now might not

Which have been the main issues about going for the analog way?

Besides film and time waste? It was really mellow overall. There were a few hiccups with camera equipment being old and not working properly in the cold, but by the second year we had everything super dialed. For some of the riders it was a funny transition, not being able to watch the clip right away and make sure it’s all good. They were trusting though and once we started to get everything back from the lab they were hyped.

The movie features a wide range of riders, from legends like Bryan Iguchi till youngsters like Mike Rave. Are you trying to leave a Vans legacy with this movie? That’s the best part about Vans in my opinion, they are down to support it all. We wanted the video to represent that for sure. It’s a trip filming with guys like Guch. I love picking his brain and hearing all about the early days, filming with Seone, all that stuff. He’s the sickest dude to have around, he always brings the best energy to a session.

Guch and all those guys being involved is just natural, they all ride together anyways. I wish the video could have shown more of that to be honest.

Have you ever calculated the total amount of meters of film you used for the movie? I’m not sure the total length of film. I did ship all the negatives back East after filming last winter and it was a little over 100 lbs.

Why did you go for a 50-minute full movie instead of episodes like many others do now? Don’t you fear millenials attention span? It sort of goes back to what I was saying before. Overall, the pacing of the movie is pretty slow, at least compared to other things that I’ve made. Making a movie is the one opportunity you have to make someone wait and draw things out a bit more than usual. I wasn’t concerned with anyone’s attention span.

All your riders seem to have something special, but each of them in a different way. Which are the traits you look for when picking up a new team member? I feel super lucky to have filmed with all these guys. I admire the way they approach snowboarding, it’s really genuine and interesting to me. What they’re doing doesn’t seem corny, which I can’t say for every side of snowboarding. They aren’t trying too hard or putting on an act, but at the same time they all have a crazy awareness for aesthetic and what will look good on film. And beyond snowboarding, they are just really good people, that’s the most important thing for sure.

Social media spamming vs years-long movie projects: which is your position? I think both are cool. I love watching Blake’s edits on Instagram and seeing what people are up to. I’m not super motivated 67

When was your first approach to photography? When I was a teenager going to summer camp with a disposable camera so I could keep some souvenir, but in general my first approach to image or photography in a way is when I was collecting and selling basketball cards at school. Chicago Bulls era with Michael Jordan, Denis Rodman, Scotty Pippen etc. Such a nice time!

Do you think that at many photographers’s eyes you will seem crazy shooting still in film? Yes, of course!

I know so many guys that don’t really understand or even worse they never shoot on film. Hopefully it’s trendy so people loves it again and shoot more films, I think it’s a nice thing because at the end they actually enjoy it. Maybe I’m gonna sound old school but for me someone would call himself a photographer and never shot any roll in his life is a bit of a joke! It’s like a painter who only work with his computer and never touch any really paint or pencil. It’s real life, come on, it’s important!

What was your first camera? When I started to take photos more seriously of my friend skateboarding, I used the Nikon FM2 of my parents. I still shoot with it today really often, it’s indestructible!

The image of the photographer ten years ago and today. What has changed? Ten years ago you could live alright only with magazines, now it’s not possible anymore, you have to work more with brands because there is not so many magazines anymore and the few little that survives don’t pay really well. Also the social media era didn’t exist before so we had to adapt a lot and build our network and community. It’s almost another extra job, it really takes a lot of time but I think it’s great, you can show your work to the world so easily. Of course now they are thousands and thousands photographers who shot pretty good with their phone and have thousands of followers, so it can be complicated for us, but I just think it pushes you even more.

You still often take a picture on analog supports, for which reason? Just because I like the way of shooting, you take more time to think, to work on your frame. Also because I like this period of waiting and forgetting time. You just discover what you shot and sometimes you don’t remember all the photos you took. It can be either way a nice or bad surprise if you killed it or fucked up. I really enjoy playing with chemical process too such as polaroids, cyanotypes, bleach etc. It’s more a craft process and I like to be away from the computer.

What do you mainly miss about the analogic romanticism? Oh, I don’t really miss it, I’m half French half Italian so I’m full of romanticism and I still shoot analog! Hahaha :)

Markus Rohrbacher When was your first approach to photography? My first serious approach to photography was back in 2008 when I began my architecture study and needed a camera for my projects.

What was your first camera? It was a Canon 40d, which did a great job, I later used it as my backup cam next to a Canon 5dm3 until 2013.

How much has digital photography changed the work of a photographer? Well I started in the digital age but as I use both types I can say that in my opinion, it is definitely more exciting to shoot with an analog camera. But since the the workflow has changed drastically since digital photography has been introduced, most of my clients expect the work in a certain time or even want to see the first results on location, which would be impossible with analog photography. I don’t want say if digital is better or worse because both have it’s advantages and disadvantages.

You still often take a picture on analog supports - for which reason? On snowboard trips I always bring couple of analog cameras and for private usage I often even leave my digital cameras at home. It’s just more fun to shoot analog. I often like the mix because each of my cameras, analog or digital created a special look or has some digital features which I don’t want to miss.

What do you mainly miss about the analog romanticism?

Today everybody runs around with camera’s and shoots with them as if it is a machine gun. So many people just don’t think about the framing or the right moment anymore, because when you shoot 10 frames per second there is always one picture that might work, and the rest you can fix in photoshop ;) So I miss the slowness, where you come home and you might have taken four or five photos and then you go into the darkroom when the film is full.

Do you think that at many photographers’s eyes you will seem crazy shooting still in film? Actually not. Most oft the people I meet are stoked and interested in what I do. Some younger kids I have to explain what a Polaroid cam is, but there is definitely a hype at the moment, which can be seen since “impossible” started producing Polaroid films again.

What has changed? Basically everything I guess. Everything got faster. The photography itself but also how photos get consumed. Today you consume on Instagram in five minutes some content which actually fills a magazine that people would read in a months time. And this also what can affect the quality of your photography. One client wanted that I shoot everything in portrait format, close and with intense colours; cause that works best for Instagram. I think that’s sums it up pretty good, this is how lots of people think today, instead of looking for outstanding photography. Btw, I didn’t take this job ;)

When was your first approach to photography? I remember looking through the view finder of my mamma’s old Nikon and playing around with the focus and the depth of field.

You don’t have to have the photos processed anymore and just beam them up to your computer. Obviously the possibility to look at a photo right away has made it much easier which is great for commercial jobs for example but I also think this fact can make you a little more lazy and not pay attention to nailing the shot as you have endless opportunities sometimes.

A big advantage is for sure that you can get the photos to your clients in split of a second.

Do you think that at many photographers’s eyes you will seem crazy shooting still in film? I know a couple that can’t really comprehend that and if you look at it strict commercially I could agree on some level but from an artistic point of view it’s definitely not crazy.

What has changed? With all the Instagram bullshit nowadays I think photographers are taken a little less seriously by the avarage Joe than 10 years ago, probably because they think it’s so easy to take good photos. The kids from today think having a shit ton of followers makes you a photographer but they often don’t know that there’s way more to it than just the photography itself like for example knowing a little bit about the history of photography like important artist from the past or contemporary artist (and I’m not talking about Chris Burkard) but also organizing and producing shootings, dealing with clients and costumers.

You still often take a picture on analog supports, for which reason? There’s obviously the look and feel of analog photos that makes me shoot analog. The grain, the bokeh, more character, it’s usually a little rougher opposed to sterile and overly sharp photos you can produce digitally.

One of the main reason though is that I just tend to think a little more before I push the trigger. I makes the actual

Frederik “Fredi” Kalbermatten and Nicolas “Nico” Mueller are two living legends of snowboarding.

From contests to freeride adventures, Fredi and Nico have always been two similar souls who have been indistinctly and invisibly connected by a fil rouge – snowboarding at its sheer best interpretation.

Basically born and raised in the same environment (the Swiss Alps, more precisely Fredi’s own backyard: Saas Fee glacier) in the past 10-15 years they have shared not only the same sponsors and brands, but also the same media exposure and the same career trajectory.

Your friendship story could fill a whole book. I already read something about the way you met each other, but I would really love to hear once more... Fredi: Nico’s family booked an apartment in the legendary Dorfblick, which is the house my grandfather built and where I lived. He came to train in Saas-Fee, and we saw each other at the halfpipe, but it wasn’t until the last day of his holiday that I found out where he was staying and laughed about it to-

gether. After that we saw each other often at contests and really became friends.

What about your debut in the pro league riding for the same brand, and lately you met up in the same company again?

Fredi: We got on Burton together, sort of like a double pack, so now to be teammates again on Mervin is rad, sort of like things coming full circle. I appreciate it, being on the same team.

How would you describe each other in five words: Fredi: Nico is creative, natural talent, dreamer, kind, organic (with double meaning, food and the way he lets things happen naturally) Nico: Fredi is quiet but determined, thinker, efficient, loyal, funny, a true friend.

How do you feel being part of the new 32TM program? Nico: A dream come true! And so another season is gone. Another season of photoshooting, competitions, filming, contests, fresh snow, lots of fresh powder, tons of powder, Olympics, more fresh snow, more comps, more shootings. I do not know what this season left to you, personally to me it has left many indelible memories. Once again, apart from some days around minus 25 degrees in which I still wondered why the hell I had chosen this job instead of just being a surf photographer or a surf media officer, I’m happy with how things went. Snowboarding has gone nuts again on the international level at PyeongChang 2018: those very few cavemen who lived in their golden towers between 2006 and 2010 have finally discovered Shaun White, while we have discovered him again, the “normal” world has known an old sport like Red Gerard, has seen the joy of living of Jamie Anderson, an Englishman on the podium of the big air, an Italian who takes home the first ever gold medal of snowboarding at the Olympics (thanks Miky for just being up there). We will see what is going to happen in the future, but the present is way better than the not too bright expectations of the last, difficult, seasons.
