Kevin ha girato un pò in tutti i terreni: pipe, park, rail e da qualche anno ha iniziato a gustarsi atterraggi soft in fresca invece dei soliti landing ghiacciati. Sarà l’età che avanza ma quella giornata in fresca a Madesimo con il suo amichetto di merende Marco Grigis l’ho visto molto divertito. Soprattutto nel giretto turistico finale in motoslitta!

Kevin has been riding any kind of terrain: pipe, park, rail e since few years he started enjoying soft landings in powder instead of the usual icy landings. Maybe I’m getting old but that day riding powder in Madesimo with his friend Marco Grigis I’ve seen him really enjoying the day. Mostly during the snowmobile trip at the end of the day!

Sono Ilaria, appassionata di action sports come immagino tutti voi! Amo la natura e quello che mi regala mentre sfreccio tra i pini in fresca o mentre sono in acqua nell’oceano in attesa di prendere un’onda! Non potrei vivere senza queste sensazioni, senza questa libertà, senza il rischio di osare sempre di più! Ho un altra passione: la fotografia! Ho la fortuna di conoscere diversi rider italiani e stranieri e la fortuna di poterli seguire e di poterli fotografare in action, potrei trascorrere ore e ore guardandoli girare, aspettando l’attimo giusto per scattare. A volte mi capita di trascorrere intere giornate in paesaggi meravigliosi, a contatto con la natura, fino al calare del sole, che per un fotografo è il momento più incredibile della giornata, l’attimo che riesco ad ottenere gli scatti più incredibili. Ho sempre raidato per passione con piccole soddisfazioni e ahimè qualche incidente di percorso tra cui un importante frattura dell’omero sinistro che mi ha costretta a 6 mesi di fissatore esterno e completo riposo, qualche capitombolo in neve fresca, qualche centrifugata in acqua e qualche tavola in testa! Insomma con il tempo sono riuscita a combinare entrambe le mie passioni e quando Denis mi ha proposto di collaborare con Sequence chiaramente ne fui subito entusiasta. Avere la possibilità di poter seguire questo mondo, questa nicchia da così vicino è meraviglioso! Ora mi trovo qui a scrivere l’edito del numero 47, una bella soddisfazione per chi, come me, fino a poco tempo prima era una fan di questo giornale. Il mio piccolo sogno si è realizzato, quest’esperienza mi ha aiutato a capire che con la costanza e la determinazione si possono raggiungere i propri obbiettivi, piccoli o grandi che essi siano.

I’m Ilaria, a passionate of action sports like all of you I guess! I love nature and all the emotions I get from it while I ride powder between the pines or while I’m floating in the ocean waiting for a wave to catch! I couldn’t live without all these sensations, without this freedom, without the risk or trying more and more! I have another passion: photography! I’m lucky enough to know various Italian and foreign riders and I’m lucky enough to be able to follow and photograph them in action, I could spend hours and hours looking at them riding, waiting for the right moment to take a photo. Sometimes I spend whole days in beautiful landscapes, in touch with nature, till sunset time which is the best moment of the day for a photographer, the moment where I can get the most incredible pictures. I’ve always been riding for passion with little satisfactions but unfortunately I had some accidents and one of the worst was the fracture of my left humerus that forced me to wear an external fixative for 6 months and to completely rest, plus some tumbles in powder, some whirlpools in the water and boards hitting my head! Hence, with time I managed to mix both of my passions and when Denis asked me to collaborate with Sequence I was really enthusiastic. Having the chance to be part of this world, see this niche from the first line it’s amazing! Now I’m here writing the edit of the issue 47, a great satisfaction for someone like me that till some time ago was just a fan of this magazine. My little dream came true, this experience helped me to understand that with tenacity and determination you can reach your goals, either big or small.

Eravamo in giro da ore con Stefano, Nicolò Pezzato e la crew di Cold Focus, alla ricerca di qualche spot innovativo e sopratutto inedito. Il problema di Helsinki che quasi tutti gli spot “famosi” sono visibili dalla strada, quindi sono molto sfruttati e ahimè sopra ci hanno chiuso l’impossibile, se ti vuoi avvicinare e sfidare chi ci ha girato prima devi essere super incazzato o è meglio starci lontano se non vuoi essere deriso da mezza europa. Spazio alla ricerca ed alla creatività, con il furgone di Matteo giriamo mezza Helsinki fino a trovare questo spot proprio dietro il cortile di una scuola, era perfetto, l’edificio era deserto, illuminato e la neve non mancava. Ci mettiamo subito al lavoro. Dopo pochi minuti inizia a nevicare a bomba, talmente tanto che la neve dovevamo toglierla invece che metterla, incredibile, decidiamo di aspettare che terminasse, in queste condizioni era impossibile girare e filmare. Non sembrava che volesse proprio smettere, ma ad un certo punto ci dà una piccola tregua. Piazzo i flash, Matteo posiziona la telecamera, Ste fa un paio di speedcheck e boom: Nose Stole Indy Pop Out chiuso perfettamente, trick semplice ma di notevole impatto, la foto e la ripresa ci hanno da subito gasato, potevamo andare a berci una bella bitta! Ero da 5 giorni a Helsinki, ma questo era il primo giorno con Stefano e Nicolò, prima stavo lavorando con dei riders australiani, devo dire che i 10 giorni totali di lavoro sono stati molto produttivi sia con una crew che con l’altra, non mi era mai successo di portare a casa due spot al giorno e con un livello così alto di fotografia e trick. Oggi alla resa dei conti posso dire Italia - Australia 0 a 0.

We’ve been around for few hours with Stefano, Nicolò Pezzato and the Cold Focus crew, looking for some innovative and inedited spots. The problem in Helsinki is that most of the “famous” spots are visible from the street, so they’re really popular and all the tricks has been already landed, if you want to challenge who has been riding it before you must be really hyped or don’t even get close to it if you don’t want to be derided by half of Europe. Space to research and creativity, with Matteo’s van we cruise around the city of Helsinki till we find this spot just right behind the backyard of a school, it was perfect, the building was empty, illuminated and there was snow enough. So we start working on it.

After few minutes it starts heavily snowing, that much that we had to remove the snow instead of putting it on, incredible. So we decide to wait till it stops, in this conditions it was impossible to ride and film. It seemed like it didn’t want to stop, but at some point it finally did. I place my flash lights, Matteo place his video camera, Ste tries some speed checks and boom: Nose Stole Indy Pop Out landed perfectly, simple trick but of significant impact, the picture and the shot got us really hyped, we could have gone to drink a beer! I was in Helsinki for 5 days already, but that was the first day with Stefano and Nicolò, I was working with some Australian riders before. I have to say those 10 days of working have been really productive with both crews, it never happened to me to bring two spots a day and with such a high level of photography and tricks. Today, at the day of reckoning I can say Italy – Australia 0 to 0.

Con i ragazzi del team Drake & Northwave Italia ho trascorso 2 giorni di camping tra Cervinia e Zermatt, immersa nella natura ed i suoi splendidi colori autunnali, pic-nic sulla riva di un torrente, skate e bmx sulla rampa di Cervinia by night e due giorni di sole sul ghiacciaio! Ma facciamo un passo indietro. Devid de Palma, team manager ha organizzato tutto alla perfezione e nei minimi particolari per dare la possibilità di produrre materiale fotografico con i ragazzi del team. I rider Mauro Bisol, Luigi Malfer, Mario Gulli, Elena Sassi, Alexander Reiner ed il nuovo arrivato in team Emiliano Lauzi, partono tutti il venerdì tarda mattina per arrivare la sera al parcheggio dei camper di Cervinia e pernottare direttamente lì ognuno nel proprio furgone. Qualcuno fortunato ha il riscaldamento all’interno dell’abitacolo, qualcun’ altro invece deve arrangiarsi tra termica e coperte per tirare la notte con qualche grado sotto lo zero! La mattina l’aria è bella frizzantina, sveglia presto, colazione all’aperto con splendida vista del Cervino e pronti per salire in ghiacciaio! Una volta visto il set up del park si decide su quali strutture girare, anche se siamo ad inizio stagione le motivazioni non mancano ed i trick chiusi sono molti. Dopo la snowbordata il pomeriggio picnic in mezzo al verde, sulla rive di un torrente, panini, carne sul barbecue, birrette, fionda e tante risate! La sera prima di cena ci ritroviamo tutti allo skate park per una piccola session sotto le stelle con mini illuminata ovviamente dai fari dei furgoni... indimenticabile! Pizzata in compagnia e notte ancora in furgone!

Uno splendido weekend divertente e a stretto contatto con la natura, con il vero spirito “libero” e “puro” dello snowboarder. Da provare ve lo consiglio!

I’ve spent two days of camping between Cervinia and Zermatt with the guys from the Drake & Northwave Team Italy immersed in the nature and its beautiful autumn colors, picnic on a stream side, skateboarding and bmx on the ramp of the Cervinia skatepark by night and two sunny days at the glacier! Now let’s take a step back. Devid De Palma, the team manager, has organized the everything in a perfect way with all the minimum details in order to give the chance to produce a lot of photographic material with the guys of the team. The rider Mauro Bisol, Luigi Malfer, Mario Gulli, Elena Sassi, Alexander Reiner and the new fresh meat in the team Emiliano Lauzi. They all left on Friday late morning in order to get to Cervinia’s campers parking got in the evening and sleep in each one’s van. Some were lucky to have heating inside the van, some others had to provide warmth wearing warm clothes and blankets to survive the cold temperatures below the zero! In the morning the air is chilly, early awakening, breakfast outside with fresh air and the view of Cervino mountain, then ready to go up the glacier! Once we checked the set up of the park we’ve decided which obstacles to ride, even though we’re at the beginning of the season we don’t lack motivation and the landed tricks are a lot. In the afternoon we had a picnic after snowboarding in the green areas, on the side of the stream, with sandwiches and grilled meat on the barbeque, beers, slingshot and many laughs! In the evening before dinner we all meet up for a small session at the skatepark under the stars with the ramp illuminated by the vans lights…memorable! Pizza for dinner and overnight in the van again! An amazing and fun weekend in touch with nature, with the real “free” and “pure” spirit of a snowboarder. I suggest you do the same!

Nico da dove nasce l’idea di partire durante l’’estate per snowboardare in Nuova Zelanda? Due anni fa a Chiesa Val Malenco un mio amico Andrea Coatti mi disse “perchè invece di lavorare qui non te ne vai a lavorare in Nuova Zelanda così snowbordi?”. Pochi giorni dopo sono partito.

Da solo?! Ehehhe si solo! E non avevo nessun contatto sul posto.

E quando sei arrivato a destinazione? Per prima cosa ho imparato un pò di Inglese, poi mi sono diretto a Wanaka, mi sono cercato un lavoretto come lava piatti e dopo pochi giorni visto che mi davo da fare mi hanno passato come aiuto cuoco. La paga però restava un vero pacco!

Com’è il park? Secondo me il park è il migliore che puoi trovare durante l’estate, c’è una bella linea di jump da 10, 15 e 18 metri. La Jib Line è da paura, divertente e molto tecnica. La cosa incredibile che ogni giorno la crew degli shaper modifica qualcosa in park, lavorano veramente bene e sono molto disponibili se hai qualche richiesta.

Pro ne hai incontrati? Si, potrei dire quasi tutti, quelli che erano in NZ sono passati tutti da Cardrona, anche perché ci sono stati un sacco di eventi.

Gli hai rubato qualche consiglio? Guardandoli girare ovviamente impari moltissimo e riesci a tirare fuori un sacco di idee e di ispirazioni. Un giorno a contatto con loro è come 100 da solo. La cosa principale che ho capito è che bisogna sapere fare un po’ tutti i tricks, bisogna adattarsi ad ogni tipo di condizione, sono migliorato molto sopratutto nelle rotazioni Switch Backside e quelle in Frontside. Ma la cosa più interessante e che mi sono portato a casa le basi per il Triple!

Programmi per la prossima stagione? Farò il circuito della coppa del mondo e qualche shooting per i miei sponsor. La prossima estate vorrei tornare in Nuova Zelanda oppure provare l’Argentina.

Nico where does the idea to go riding in New Zealand during the summertime comes from? Two years ago at Chiesa Val Malenco my friend Andrea Coatti told me: “Why don’t you go to New Zealand to ride instead of working here?”. Few days later I left.

On your own? Heheh yes, on my own! And I didn’t know anyone over there.

What about your arrival to the destination? At first I learned some English, then I headed to Wanaka, I found a job as a dishwasher and after few days they’ve rewarded my effort and promoted me as the assistant chef. But the salary was still bad!

How’s the park? I think the park is the best you can find during summertime, there’s a nice line of 10, 15 and 18 meters kickers. The Jib Line is sick, fun and really technical. The incredible thing is that every day the shaper screw modify something in the park, they work well and they’re really kind if you have any special request.

Have you met any pro? Yes, I could say almost all of them. All those who were in NZ have passes by Cardrona also because there have been many events.

Did you get any advice from them? Looking at them riding you can learn a lot and get many ideas and inspirations. A day spent in contact with them is like 100 days alone. The main thing I learned is that you have to be able to do pretty much every trick, you have to adapt to any kind of condition, I improved my riding a lot in the rotations Switch Backside and Frontside. But the most important thing is that I learned all the basics for the Triple!

Any plans for the next season? I’ll do the World Cup circuit and some shooting for my sponsors. Next summer I’d like to go back to New Zealand or maybe Argentina.

Raggruppiamo altre due teste calde come Sergio Bolla e Andrea Dodaro detto Dollas e si parte! 23 eterne ore di viaggio tra voli e scali, placabili solo con tutti i mini whiskey e le tette delle hostess! Ancora non sappiamo cosa ci riservava la nostra prima avventura negli States, ma siamo pronti. Presa la macchina ci mettiamo in viaggio da San Francisco verso il primo resort, Boreal Mtn; non è uno spot famoso e quest’anno non è stata una stagione fortunata, ha nevicato poco, ma questo piccolo resort a bordo strada era pazzesco: una sola seggiovia aperta e un park unico con rail e jibbate di ogni tipo e forma… con poco hanno creato un piccolo paradiso. Il nostro viaggio continua verso Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe e poi attraverso Reno ed Emerald Bay. 10 giorni trascorsi in questi resort vicini a Lake Tahoe ci hanno letteralmente tolto il fiato, ma una mattina arriva la notizia che a Mammoth Mountain nevica…e allora vamos!!! Appena arrivati troviamo un’atmosfera magica tutt’intorno; ci sono i Grenade Games, una sorta di Iuter Games solo che a girare c’è gente spessa! Il park è impressionante, kicker perfetti, rail in ogni dove, unico problema che lo skipass costa 100 verdoni. Giornate pazzesche volano come le birre, risate memorabili con gli amici, posti stupendi, powder, feste e molto altro, potrei scrivere per delle ore ma sono convinto che non basterebbero un milione di battute per questa emozionante avventura. L’unica cosa che posso consigliarvi è che anche se non siete dei pro come me, il vostro prossimo viaggio deve essere qui, non ve ne pentirete e vedrete lo snowboard sotto tutta un’altra prospettiva.

I take my mobile, I open Whatsapp and text my party mate Matteo Pagliero better known as Spillo: “Do you want to go riding Cali in April?”, after 30 seconds the answer comes automatically: “Sure! I’m stoked, buy the tickets!”. We form a little group and call two other friends Sergio Bolla and Andrea Dodaro known as Dollas, and we’re ready to go! 23 never ending hours of journey between flights and stopovers, surviving only thanks to the mini whiskeys and stewardesses boobs! We still didn’t know what to expect from our first time in the States, but we were ready. After renting a car we start travelling from San Francisco towards the first resort: Boreal Mtn; it’s not a famous spot and this season they haven’t been that lucky with the snow, but this small resort next to the highway was crazy: only one opened chairlift and an unique park with rails and jibbing structures of every kind and shape.. they’ve created a paradise with anything.

Our trip continues to Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe and then through Reno and Emerald Bay. Ten days spent in these resorts next to Lake Tahoe were breathtaking. But one morning comes the news that is snowing in Mammoth .. so let’s go! As soon as we arrive we find a magic atmosphere around, the Grenade Games are going on, a sort of Iuter Games but with really sick riders shredding! The park is impressive, perfect kickers, rails of any type, only bad point is that the lift pass costs around 100 bucks. Perfect days just fly away as the beers, fun times with friends, beautiful places, powder, parties and many more, I could write about it for hours but I’m convinced that even a million words wouldn’t be enough to describe this amazing adventure. The only thing I can suggest you is that even if you’re not a pro like me, your next trip should be here, you won’t regret it and you’ll see snowboarding from a different point of view.

PreparaZIONE Questo trick è bello da vedere e anche da fare, ma richiede due trick di base. Half cab e Fs boardslide. Quindi prima di provarlo in street il mio consiglio è quello di fare qualche run in park concentrandosi su questi due trick e poi provare il trick completo, soprattutto se devi anche superare un ostacolo prima di agganciare il rail come in nella sequenza di Max.

Preparation This trick is nice to watch and to do but it requires two basic tricks. Half cab and Fs Boardslide. So before trying it in street my advice is to take few laps in the park concentrating on those two tricks and then try the complete trick, mostly if you’ll have to overtake an obstacle before hitting the rail like Max did in this sequence.

Approccio Prepara bene il set up facendo attenzione a costruire un dente che abbia abbastanza pop da superare il primo ostacolo. Quando è tutto pronto fai qualche speed check per capire da dove devi partire. Droppa e arriva sul dente a tavola piatta, gambe piegate e il peso leggermente sui talloni.

ApPROACH Prepare the set up taking care of making an in-run that will have pop enough to overtake the first obstacle. When everything is ready make some speed check to understand where do you have to start from. Drop and reach the inrun with your board flat, bent legs and the weight a bit concentrated on the heels.

Manovra Durante lo stacco distendi le gambe per ollare e contemporaneamente ruota le spalle verso sinistra per creare lo spin necessario a ruotare le gambe di 270°. L’ollie dovrà essere abbastanza alto da non sbattere contro la struttura durante la rotazione. Quando le gambe hanno ruotato di 180° le spalle rallentano la rotazione, mentre la tavola completa la rotazione di 270°. Se avete eseguito tutto per bene vi trovate in Fs boardslide e per uscire correttamente in fakie dovrete continuare la rotazione con sguardo e spalle alla fine del rail.

TRICK During the take off extend your legs to ollie and at the same time rotate your shoulders towards left to create the necessary spin in order to rotate your legs in 270°. The ollie will have to be high enough to in order not to hit the structure during the rotation. When your legs have already made a 180° rotation your shoulders slow down the rotation while your board complete the 270° rotation. If you did everything well you’ll find yourself in a Fs Boardslide position and to land properly in fakie you’ll have to keep on rotating with your look and your shoulders at the end of the rail.

Atterraggio Se hai eseguito tutto alla perfezione e la posizione sul rail era corretta, le gambe e le spalle faranno ruotare la tavola in uscita e vi troverete quindi in switch. A questo punto piegate le gambe per diminuire l’impatto sulle articolazioni. Puoi sempre buttare un pò di neve in più nel punto di impatto per rendere l’atterraggio più morbido.

LANDING If you did everything well and the position on the rail was right, your legs and your shoulders will let your board rotate at the end of the rail and you’ll find yourself in switch. At this point bent your legs to reduce the impact on the articulations. You can put a bit more of snow on that point in order to have a softer landing.

Preparazione Prepara bene il set up, con il dente in stile street (stacco basso a lato del rail) e butta un pò di neve in più nel punto di atterraggio per renderlo più morbido.

Preparation Prepare the set-up with a street style in-run (low take off from a side of the rail) and put a little bit more of snow on the landing to make it softer.

Approccio Quando è tutto pronto fai qualche speed check per capire da dove dovrai partire per centrare il landing nel punto migliore. Droppa a sinistra della ringhiera (destra per i goofy) e arriva sul dente a tavola piatta con le gambe piegate.

Approach When everything is ready make some speed check to understand when to start from in order to center the landing on its best point. Drop on the left side on the rail (right for goofy riders) and reach the in-run with a flat board and bent legs.

Manovra Olla abbastanza da portare la tavola sopra al rail e aggancia la struttura in Bs 50-50 con il peso il più centrale possibile. Mantieni la posizione, piega le gambe e solo a fine struttura ruota spalle e testa in backside distendendo le gambe per staccare dal rail.

Maneuver Ollie enough to bring the board over the rail and hit the structure with a Bs 50-50 keeping the weight balanced as much as possible. Maintain the position, bent your legs and only at the end rotate your shoulders and your head in backside extending your legs to get off the rail.

Landing Appena vedi l’atterraggio blocca le spalle e lascia che la tavola finisca la rotazione di 360°. In street, per evitare infortuni, è importantissimo ammortizzare bene con le ginocchia, il landing solitamente è piatto.

Landing As soon as you see the landing stop your shoulders and leave the board end the rotation in 360°. In street, to avoid injuries, it’s really important to amortize well with your knees because usually the landing is flat.

Il signor Jake Burton Carpenter e il suo team direzionale sono venuti qui nel Bel Paese fin dal Vermont, dove ha sede l’ headquarter di Burton Snowboards, per celebrare i vent’anni di Pietro Colturi alla guida di Burton Italia (pietrocolturi .com). In quest’occasione abbiamo avuto la possibilità d’intervistare il “padre” della tavola da snowboard.

Mister Jake Burton Carpenter and his directional team came here to Italy straight from Vermont , where the Burton Snowboards headquarter is, to celebrate Pietro Colturi’s 20th anniversary leading Burton Italia (pietrocolturi.com). In this occasion we had the chance to interview the pioneer of snowboarding.

Tutto è iniziato in un bar nel Vermont, perfezionando uno Snurfer. Cos’è successo quel giorno? In realtà all’età di 14 anni, quando già andavo sullo Snurfer, sentivo dentro di me che quello era uno sport vero e proprio, non solo un gioco venduto a 10 dollari. In quel periodo mi dicevo “un giorno io farò snowboards”, ma come al solito difficilmente queste cose accadono subito, infatti avevo il forte dubbio che qualcun altro si impegnasse in questa direzione; poi, quando sono uscito dall’università a 23 anni, ho realizzato che nessuno ancora ci aveva lavorato e, finalmente, mi sono convinto! Inizialmente realizzai 100 prototipi con differenti tipologie di costruzione: costruzione surfboard, skateboard, ispirata alla lavorazione delle barche… ho anche rischiato di uccidermi due volte, perché professionalmente non era di certo il mio campo all’inizio! Poi ci fu davvero un lungo periodo di prove per i materiali.

Everything started in a bar in Vermont, refining a Snurfer. What happened that day? Actually when I was 14 and I was already riding a Snurfer I felt that what I was doing was a real sport and not only a toy sold for 10 dollars. In that period I was telling myself “one day I’ll make snowboards”, but this kind of things don’t happen immediately and I had a doubt that someone else will take on that way. Then when I graduated at University at the age of 23 I realized that none else thought about working on it, so finally I convinced myself! At the beginning I realized 100 prototypes with different construction typologies: surfboard construction, skateboard construction, inspired by the boats manufacturing.. I even almost killed myself twice, because at the beginning it wasn’t really my field professionally! Then there was a really long period of the materials trials.

ho anche rischiato di uccidermi due volte, perché INIZIALMENTE non era di certo il mio campo!

I even almost killed myself twice, because at the beginning it wasn’t my field OF profession!

gname per la curvatura: inserivano la tavola in un grosso forno a vapore, a gradazione altissima, e subito dopo veniva messa sotto una potente pressa per dargli la forma curva al nose. Era davvero una tavola grezza, super tosta!

Successivamente realizzai qualche prototipo in legno marino compensato a multistrato, ma anche questi erano poco reattivi; passai alla costruzione navale, in sostanza piccoli pezzi di vetroresina incollati l’uno con l’altro, ma il prodotto finale era davvero pesante. Questi furono i passaggi più importanti, durante i diversi anni di studio, prima di andare a trovare il mio carissimo amico John Mel - fondatore dell’azienda produttrice di tavole da surf Freeline Surf Design a Santa Cruz California; rimasi li per due settimane, partendo dalle stesse tavole da surf per rifinirle fino a una tavola da snow… c’era foam dappertutto! Il risultato era buono, ottimo flex e look perfetto, ma non avevano resistenza. Passai automaticamente alla costruzione skate, in sostanza legno resistente laminato, e quello era perfetto… non era velocissimo, mancavano ancora diversi dettagli, ma la base era in poliuretano e il flex era azzeccato, oltre ad essere molto resistente! Oltre questo percorso, la cosa di cui vado più fiero sono gli attacchi… sono un “Binding guy”, è quello in cui Burton Snowboards ha rivoluzionato più di ogni altra cosa questo sport.

ally big wood carving company to realize the shape: they putted the board in a steam oven with a very high temperature and right after they putted it under a powerful press to give the nose a curved shape. It really was a rough board, so determined! Afterwards I made some prototypes with marine plywood, but those were not really reactive either; then I switched to naval construction realizing small fiberglass pieces attached to each other, but the final product was too heavy. Those were the most important passages during the various years of research before going to visit my dear friend John Mel – the founder of the surfboards company Freeline Surf Design at Santa Cruz California; I stayed there for two weeks, working and restyling surfboards up to turning them into snowboards.. there was foam everywhere! The result was good, great flex and perfect look but they were not strong enough. So I automatically switched to skateboards construction using resistant laminated wood, and that was perfect.. it wasn’t fast, there were some missing details but the base was made by polyurethane and the flex wasn’t only resistant but exact too! Besides that field, a thing I’m really proud of are the bindings.. I’m a “Binding guy”, and that’s what Burton Snowboards has revolutionized most than anything else in this sport.

Avresti mai pensato che dopo solo qualche decennio lo snowboard diventasse una realtà così importante a livello mondiale, con tutti questi appassionati? No, devo essere sincero, quando cominciai a costruire tavole non avevo la minima idea… le utilizzavamo io con dei miei amici, non certo nei resort che risultavano troppo cari per dei ragazzi giovani; all’inizio le tavole erano pensate per la fresca, si snowboardava solo quando aveva nevicato da poco, non sulle piste. Ogni tanto andavamo dai gattisti dei resort e con una cassa di birra ci facevano fare qualche risalita… è stato in quelle occasioni che avevamo capito di dover studiare delle tavole adatte alle piste. Questo fu il vero inizio dello sport in se, dal punto di vista delle persone… quando le prime tavole entrarono sulle piste!

Have you ever thought that after some decades snowboarding will become a so important worldwide reality, with tons of fans? To be honest when I started making snowboards I had no idea it would be like that.. I was using them with my friends, of course not riding too expensive resorts for some young guys; at the beginning the boards were conceived for powder riding, not for the slopes. Sometimes we were going to the snow cat drivers with a box of beers hoping they will give us a ride to the top of the mountain.. that was the moment we realized we had to make boards suitable for slopes. That was the real beginning of the sport looking from the point of view of the people… when the first boards entered the slopes!

Sappiamo che la storia di Burton è senza dubbio una storia lunga, ce la puoi raccontare brevemente nelle sue fasi principali?

Il primo step fondamentale nella storia di Burton fu sicuramente lo sviluppo delle prime tavole; a seguire quando riuscimmo a coinvolgere i resort, cosa non facile inizialmente per un forte scetticismo scaturito dalla paura del nuovo, oltre che dal timore di essere citati in giudizio in caso di infortuni sulle piste.

Questo aspetto lo abbiamo vissuto soprattutto negli USA, devo ammettere che in Europa avevano un’attitudine molto più aperta e disponibile, dove c’è molta più storia e cultura legata alla realtà della montagna! Un altro gradino molto importante è rappresentato dai supporti sul retro degli attacchi, questi cambiarono completamente la concezione di guida della tavola rendendola più semplice e portando lo snowboard a un livello ancora superiore. Infine le ultime due fasi importanti furono l’avvento del Freestyle, fondamentale, e per chiudere le Olimpiadi.

We know that Burton history is beyond doubt a long story, but could you explain us the main phases? The main step in the history of Burton was certainly the progression of the first boards; to follow, the moment when we managed to involve the resorts which wasn’t that easy at the beginning because of their strong skepticism towards new things and the fear of being arraigned in case of accidents on the slopes. We have experienced that aspect mostly in USA, I have to admit that in Europe there was a more open-minded attitude and a richer culture connected to the mountain reality!

Another important step is related to the back supports of the bindings, they completely changed the concept of riding a board making it simpler and bringing snowboarding at a higher level.

Eventually, the last two main phases were the advent of freestyle and the Olympics.

In questi anni sei sempre stato prima di tutto uno snowboarder: quanto è grande la tua passione e che emozioni provi ogni volta che vai a snowboardare? Per intenderci, il mio obiettivo principale durante l’anno è quello di snowboardare almeno 100 giorni. Se non ci riuscissi dovrei cambiare mestiere! Non so come spiegarlo, devo farlo per forza, non riuscirei a vivere senza lo snowboard perché lo snowboard è la mia vita! Come il primo giorno che ho messo i piedi su una tavola, ancora oggi mi diverto un sacco, sono felice quando sono sulla neve, lo associo al non andare a scuola! Lo snowboard è divertimento puro in mezzo alla neve fresca, e così è per me quando sono in montagna insieme alla mia famiglia.

During these years you’ve always been a snowboarder first: how big is your passion and what do you experience every time you go snowboarding? Put simply, my main goal during the year is to snowboard at least 100 days. If I wouldn’t be able to make it, I’d have to change profession! I don’t know how to explain it, I just need it, I couldn’t live without snowboarding because snowboarding is my life! Noi ovviamente non ci siamo fatti scappare l’occasione di fargli un piccola intervista!

In occasion of the promotion of the Capita Snowboard video “Stay Bad Ass”, Cale Zima and Dan Brisse passed through Italy too thanks to the California Sport organization and the support of Lm Snowboard Store of our friend Manuel Pietropoli.

Obviously we didn’t want to miss this occasion to take an interview to Dan!

Ciao Dan, raccontaci un po’ com’è andata l’ultima stagione? Tutto sommato è andata molto bene, ho girato alla grande e ho gareggiato al Real Snow contest degli X-Games... siamo andati bene ma per sfortuna, dopo solo una settimana, sono caduto e mi sono fatto male ad una spalla.

Hi Dan, tell us how has your l ast season been? All in all it was really good, my riding has been great and I’ve participated to the Real Snow X-Games contest… it was good but unfortunately after just one week I fell down and hurt my shoulder.

te street, e ho saltato l’altra metà del trip basato sul backcountry... ma fino all’incidente è andato tutto alla grande! Adesso ho ripreso al 100%, mi spiace solo che la mia stagione sia finita un po’ troppo presto!

Hai trascorso l’estate con la tua famiglia a Mt. Hood, com’è andata? Come mai proprio questa location? Fantastico, specialmente durante l’estate è un posto davvero magnifico!

La famiglia di mia moglie è di quella zona, e mentre tornavamo da Salt Lake City siamo andati a trovarli e abbiamo trascorso un po’ di tempo tutti insieme.

Parlaci di Stay Bad Ass e soprattutto della tua part. Penso che sia andata bene in fin dei conti, il film nella sua totalità è una vera bomba, ci sono molte part dei miei compagni davvero accattivanti!

I missed the other part of the movie based on backcountry.. but before the accident everything was just going well! Now I recovered 100%, I’m just sorry that my season ended a bit too early!

You’ve spent the summer with your family at Mt Hood, how was it? Why did you choose this location? It was fantastic, especially during summertime it becomes a magic place! My wife’s family comes from that area, so when we were coming back from Salt Lake City we went to visit them and spent some time all together.

Tell us something about Stay Bad Ass and mostly about your videopart I think that it went good at the end, in its entirety the movie is sick, there are many great parts of my fellows! As I said before, unfortunately my video part has

Come dicevo prima, purtroppo, la mia si è interrotta al momento dell’incidente ma fa parte del gioco... devo dirti la verità, credo che il mio footage in street sia stato forse il migliore di tutta la mia carriera.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti per questo inverno? Ho in ballo un paio di opportunità interessanti... forse dovrei filmare con Pirate Video, lo spero! Inoltre dovrei prendere parte ad una Web Series da sei episodi... vedremo! Per quanto riguarda i contest credo che parteciperò solo agli X-Games.

Cosa viene dopo lo snowboard per Dan Brisse? Sono nato e cresciuto in Minnesota, dovrei essere un pescatore appassionato... invece è strano, non ci crederai, ma sono entrato nel giro del Real Estate: compro e vendo proprietà, per molti non sembrerà divertente ma per qualche ragione assurda lo è per me!

What comes after snowboarding for Dan Brisse? I was born and raised in Minnesota, I should be a passionate fisherman… but it’s weird, you won’t believe it but I joined the Real Estate: I buy and sell properties, for most you it won’t seem fun but for some weird reason I like it!simple, because every time there’s the chance to eat a cheeseburger I eat tones of them.

Per questo motivo non è raro incontrare durante i mesi invernali esemplari di alci all’interno delle strade cittadine. Oslo è circondata da verdi colline e montagne, che con l’arrivo dell’inverno vengono completamente nascoste dalla neve, potete ora solo immaginare quanti spot esistono e quanti se ne possano inventare all’interno dei confini di questa stupenda città. Per questo trip la nostra crew era formata da me, il filmer Marco “Jhonny” Morandi, Juan Polanco rider spagnolo, il nostro Max Zebe e ovviamente il padrone di casa Oivind Fykse. L’intenzione era di sfruttare una prematura nevicata di inizio dicembre per fare un bel trip di street e tirare su

Oslo is surrounded by green hills and mountains that during the winter get completely covered by snow, so you can now imagine how many spots you can find around the surroundings of the city and how many spots you can create yourself. For this trip our crew was formed by the filmer Marco ‘Jhonny’ Morandi, the Spanish rider Juan Polanco, our Max Zebe , obviously the master of the house Oivind and myself. The intention was to take advantage of the first snowfall at the beginning of December to have a trip to film some street riding and get some tricks for the new Different Vision Production video Octopus.

Dopo le presentazioni di rito abbiamo voglia di snowbordare e di shootare quindi, dopo un’abbondante merenda, giusto per passare la serata ci buttiamo nel rail park privato di Oivind proprio davanti a casa, un piccolo park con qualche struttura divertente, ottima per allenarsi e imparare qualche nuova combo… ora capisco perché questi Norvegesi sono così forti! Il problema di questa regione è come sapete la luce, infatti diventa giorno molto tardi e scende il buio molto presto, circa alle 15.00 del pomeriggio, se sei fortunato e trovi una bella giornata di sole forse hai 7 ore per snowbordare senza illuminazione artificiale. Ci adattiamo subito alle esigenze del luogo, sveglia alle 8.00, colazione veloce e si parte alla ricerca dei primi spot. In un parcheggio di un market ci aspetta una leggenda dello snowboard internazionale, Danny Larsen, in questi gior-

After the introductions we’re all hungry to snowboard and shoot, so after a generous snack we hit the private Oivind’s rail park just next to his house, a small park with few fun obstacles, perfect to train and to learn some new combos.. Now I understand why all these Norwegians are so great! As you know, the problem of this region is the light, the day starts late and the sunset comes really early, around 3pm.

If you’re lucky and you find a good sunny day you have more or less 7 hours to snowboard without artificial lights. So we immediately adapt to the location needs, alarm clock at 8am, fast breakfast and ready to look for the first spots. In a market par-

ni girerà con noi e finalmente avrò l’opportunità di fotografarlo e godermi i suoi trick e il suo stile in prima persona. Danny è una persona molto umile, nonostante rappresenta uno dei rider più rispettati della scena e un’artista emergente, da subito si è messo a disposizione nella ricerca di spot e, quando è ora di palare non si tira mai indietro, anche se non ha idea di girare nello spot. Il nostro street shooting è durato soli cinque giorni dove siamo riusciti a girare in media due spot al giorno, al nostro arrivo la città aveva mezzo metro di neve fresca sul suolo, ma poco dopo Oslo e’ stata investita da una perturbazione atlantica calda e gran parte della neve caduta e’ stata pian piano sciolta dalle piogge… questo evento atmosferico ci ha modificato non poco i piani di lavoro ma allo stesso tempo ci ha permesso di visitare meglio la città e i suoi stupendi paesaggi circostanti. Alla fine sembra proprio che non sia andata male, no?

king lot an International snowboarding legend is waiting for us, Danny Larsen, who’s going to shoot with us during these days and finally I’ll have the chance to take him some photos and enjoy myself his tricks and style. Danny is a really modest person, even though he represents one of the most respected riders in the scene and an emerging artist. He was always ready to look for spots and always the first one to prepare the spot even though he wasn’t thinking to ride it. Out street shooting lasted only five days where we manages to ride two spots a day, at our arrival there was half a meter of fresh snow around the city but after few days Oslo has been invested by a warm Atlantic perturbation and most part of the snow just melted because of the rain.. That glitch has pretty much modified our working plans but at the same time gave us the chance to visit the city and its beautiful landscapes. At the end it wasn’t that bad, was it?

La scorsa stagione è stata come trovare la pentola in fondo all’arcobaleno: quasi ogni due giorni su tre c’era una perturbazione in arrivo. Le Alpi nostrane sono state letteralmente sommerse dalla neve e stazioni come Madesimo e Passo del Tonale sono addirittura entrate nella top-cinque mondiale delle località più innevate, praticamente impraticabili a causa della quantità di neve scesa. Lo snowboard è uno sport strettamente legato all’elemento “natura”. Non si può comandare al meteo di essere clemente o generoso. Imparare a godere del momento è basilare, dare sfogo alla propria fantasia consigliato. Se continua a fare brutto, e buttare neve, c’è una sola scelta da fare: sorridere, uscire, inventarsi linee, sfruttare al meglio le condizioni e godere della montagna. Aspettare assiduamente la propria condizione ideale è controproducente. Arriverà, ma per il momento goditi quello che c’è! La stagione scorsa è stata portatrice di questo pensiero. La mattina presto una leggera brezza che muove i cristalli di neve appena caduta mista ai raggi di un sole che ancora si sta alzando, creano quell’atmosfera dove tutto intorno a te luccica; man mano che aumenta la luce inizi a pregustarti con gli occhi i contorni e le superfici che ti chiamano e invogliano! Veloce check all’attrezzatura: Arva c’è e funziona, pala c’è, sonda c’è, acqua anche, siamo pronti! La “Banda Pastori” è al completo: Il “chirurgo” Stefano Munari, il “bomber” Lorenzo Buzzoni, il fantasioso e solido Lorenzo Barbieri , l’intramontabile Tato Chiala ed il sottoscritto. Che dire, un gran bel gruppo riunito con un solo obiettivo: snowboardare e divertirsi. Le tre giornate a disposizione vengono decise e organizzate secondo un preciso ordine. Last season was like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow: there was a perturbation coming almost every day. Our Alps have been literally overwhelmed by snow and resorts like Madesimo and Passo del Tonale even joined the top 5 of the most snowy resorts in the world, impracticable because of the huge quantity of snow.

Snowboarding is a sport extremely related to the element “nature”.

You can’t impose the weather to be clement or generous. Learn how to seize the day is a standard, give vent to your creativity is recommended. If it keeps on being bad weather, keeps on snowing, there’s only one thing to do: smile, go out, create lines, exploit the conditions as your best and enjoy the mountain. Waiting assiduously for the right condition is counter-productive. It will arrive, but for the moment enjoy what you have! Last season was the bearer of this philosophy. In the early morning a light breeze that moves the fresh snow crystals together with a bit of sunshine creates an atmosphere where everything around you is shining; when the light is gradually growing you start enjoying all the outlines and surfaces that are just waiting for you! Quick check at the equipment: Arva checked and functioning, shovel checked, probe checked, water checked, now we’re ready! nei boschi. La ricerca degli spot è incessante, pillow, cliffs, ollie giganti si susseguono tra battute veloci nei pochi momenti di pausa. Negli occhi di tutti c’è entusiasmo, quell’entusiasmo che solo certe giornate riescono a trasmettere. La neve è decisamente ideale! Quel suono sordo, inconfondibile, negli atterraggi o negli slash scandisce ogni secondo che passa interrotto solamente da brevi “yahoo” urlati tra gli alberi. Il secondo giorno lo abbiamo dedicato alla ricerca di un punto adatto per un kicker e la sua costruzione. Nonostante le condizioni siano cambiate rapidamente e il sole abbia iniziato a “scaldare”, la vastità del comprensorio ci ha permesso di trovare un punto ideale in quel piccolo scorcio di paradiso che è Artesina. Costruire un kicker è sempre faticoso ma piacevole, ogni colpo di pala è sempre seguito da piccole e brevi fantasie su come sarà il risultato finale. Il terzo giorno si vola! Lollo apre le danze con un Bs7 e butta un Bs9 perfetto subito dopo, chiudendo il best trick della giornata al secondo giro! Era il primo kicker della stagione per tutti e funzionava bene: è stata una gran bella giornata trascorsa tra battute sulle cadute e “yeah” lanciati per ogni bel trick chiuso. Il tempo complessivamente è passato fin troppo velocemente tra scherzi, piccole incomprensioni, granate nel bosco, bombe sul kicker e qualche cartella divertente. Questo raduno è stato produttivo, coinvolgente e sicuramente da rifare. Prato nevoso è sempre un’ottima scelta, ideale per divertirsi in fresca (con le dovute precauzioni); inoltre gode anche di una bella scena locale e di un’ottimo park! Nei tre giorni, abbiamo potuto fare anche una session notturna nel park rifatto ad una velocità incredibile da Gherry e la fantastica organizzazione che ha creato negli anni.

take some lines and cliffs in the woods. A never ending research of spots, pillows, cliffs, huge ollies, followed by quick jokes during the fast breaks. Everyone is full of enthusiasm, that kind of enthusiasm that only some special days can hand down. The snow is definitely perfect! That unvoiced sound, unmistakable, during the landings or the slashes is interrupted only by the brief “yahoo” screamed in the middle of the trees. We have dedicated the second day to the research of a good spot for the construction of a kicker. Even though the weather conditions changed so fast and the sun started “heating up” the snow, the huge extent of the resort allowed us to find the perfect spot in this little Artesina heaven. Building a kicker is always tiring but satisfying, every hit with the shovel is followed by new ideas on how the final result will be. The third day we fly! Lollo starts with a Bs7 and right after lands a perfect Bs9, stomping the best trick of the day at his second run! It was the first kicker of the season for everyone and it was working well: it was a great day, full of jokes on the bails and many “yeah” at every good trick landed. Time definitely flew so fast with jokes, little misunderstandings, huge bails in the woods, bangers on the kicker and some funny bails. That reunion has been productive, captivating and definitely to be redone. Prato Nevoso is always a great choice, ideal to have fun in powder (with the right precautions); in addition, this resorts offers a great local scene and an awesome snowpark! During these three days we had the chance to have a night session in the park remade by Gherry and the awesome team he created during the years in a really fast way.

In una vecchia intervista su Sequence 33 avevi aperto sostenendo che “Le crew non servono a nulla, Gnarcolate è solo un gruppo di amici”... Ora che è anche un business, la pensi allo stesso modo? Gnarcolate non è nata con l’idea di fare business, ma con il tempo, l’evoluzione e la maturità del gruppo - ma sopratutto con l’esigenza di crearci un lavoro, abbiamo evoluto la crew in un brand. Man mano che invecchiavamo gli sponsor ci hanno sempre dato meno budget per raidare, così ci siamo stati costretti a inventarci qualcosa che ci permettesse di pagare le nostre giornate sulla neve.

In an old interview in Sequence 33 you were saying that “Crews don’t mean anything, Gnarcolate is just a group of friends”.. Now that you started a business with it, do you still think in this way? Gnarcolate wasn’t founded with the idea of making a business, but over time, evolution and maturity of the group – and mostly with the need of creating a job, we have turned the crew in a brand. As we were getting older sponsors gradually started giving us less budget to ride, so we were forced to invent something that would have allowed us to pay our riding excursions.

Sei sempre stato un viaggiatore alla ricerca di esperienze e spot. Qual è stato il luogo che ti ha dato e da cui hai imparato di più? Sono estremamente legato alla Finlandia, esattamente a Helsinki; sono stato accolto come in una famiglia da questa città e dalla sua gente. Questo Paese ti insegna cosa vuol dire fare snowboard in street, i ragazzini non hanno le montagne e quando vogliono raidare sono costretti a fare rail... prendere o lasciare! Se non fai un’esperienza a Helsinki non sarai mai un vero street rider.

You’ve always been a traveler looking for experiences and spots. What was the place that gave you more emotions and taught you the most? I’m extremely connected to Finland, to Helsinki to be exact; I has been welcomed by this city and its people like in a family. This country teaches you what street snowboarding really is, all the kids don’t have mountains and if they want to ride they’re forced to ride rails.. take it or leave it! You’ll never be a real street rider if you don’t do an experience in Helsinki.

Quest’inverno sono rimasto impressionato da Max Zebe, un piede e uno stile così ad un ragazzino non li avevo mai visti da nessuna parte. Dico alle nuove generazioni di prendere il primo biglietto aereo e di andare fuori dall’Italia se vogliono spaccare.

What do you think about the Italian snowboarding general level? We have interesting riders, I’m talking about new generations… the ones we have now missed their chance, too late for them.

This winter Max Zebe really impressed me, I’ve never seen a kid with such a style at any place. I’m saying to the new generations to take the first flight ticket and to leave Italy if they really want to kick asses.

Socio di Funky Snowboards insieme a Isacco Mantegazza e Luca Cozzi, avete riesumato un marchio storico e potente come questo. Come procede il progetto e che difficoltà state incontrando? Il progetto è super, il mood storico di Funky è attuale tutt’oggi; noi lo stiamo riproponendo, funziona, piace! Il problema è produrre tavole in Italia con la nostra qualità, cosa che risulta molto difficile ma siamo sicuri della strada presa.

Associate of Funky Snowboards together with Isacco Mantegazza and Luca Cozzi, you have resurrected a historical and powerful brand. How’s the project going and what are the difficulties you’re facing? The project is great, the historical Funky mood is still the same; we’re proposing it again, it works and people like it! The problem is producing boards in Italy with our quality, a thing that seems to be really hard but we’re sure about the choices we made.

Perché in Italia lo snowboard non esplode? I motivi sono infiniti, il 90% delle persone che gestisce lo snowboard in Italia non capisce nulla, a partire dalla Federazione e tutto quello che ci gira attorno; si impegnano ma non hanno le competenze per farlo, servirebbe un’immediato cambio di rotta. Ultimamente qualcosa si è mosso, infatti stanno inserendo degli ex snowboarder nelle posizioni importanti.

Why doesn’t snowboarding explode in Italy? The reasons are endless, 90% of the people who work around snowboarding in Italy doesn’t understand a thing, starting from the Federation and all the things around it; they try hard but they don’t have the competences to do it, we’ll need a big change. Lately something changed, in fact they ‘re giving some ex snowboarders the main positions.

Sono stato in Giappone una volta, più di dieci anni fa. Passai una settimana a Tokyo ai tempi, e quando stavo tornando in Giappone a gennaio di quest’anno pensavo di saper già cosa aspettarmi. A parte che, questa volta, stavo andando in Giappone e non a Tokyo. La destinazione del mio biglietto aereo era Sapporo, sull’isola di Hokkaido nel vero nord del Giappone. I giapponesi sono molto gentili. Estremamente gentili. Così gentile da far male. E il loro obiettivo principale nel comunicare con gli stranieri è dargli la miglior impressione possibile del proprio paese. Quando andammo al noleggio auto a prendere la nostra Toyota Hi-Ace, la signorina dietro al bancone non solo ci ha dato le direzioni su dove andare a prenderla, ma ci ha addirittura accompagnato, spinto i bottoni dell’ascensore e fatto sì che salissimo sul bus dalla porta giusta.

Il rappresentante del noleggio auto è stato così gentile da inserirci la destinazione nel GPS in sola lingua giapponese – abbiamo poi realizzato che spingere qualsiasi tasto è una cattiva idea, in quanto solo tornare sulla mappa di partenza è un operazione che necessita di una persona locale. I‘ve been in Japan once before, more than ten years ago. I spent one week in Tokyo back then, and when I was heading to Japan again in January this year I thought I knew what to expect. Except that, this time, I was heading to Japan and not to Tokyo.The destination on my plane ticket was Sapporo, on the Island of Hokkaido in the very North of Japan. The Japanese are very polite. Extremely polite. They´re so polite it hurts.

And their main goal in corresponding with people from abroad is to give them the best possible impression of their country. So when we went to the rental car desk to pick up our Toyota Hi-Ace ride, the girl behind the counter didn´t just give us directions on where to pick up the car, but walked us there, pushed elevator buttons for us and made sure we got on the bus through the right door.

The representative of the rental car company was kind enough to enter our destination in the Japanese only GPS - and we soon realized that pushing any button on this thing is a bad idea, since only finding your way back to the map once lost in the menu is a task you will need local help for. It was late at night when we arrived at our base in the Asahikawa area.

Occidentali in un hotel pieno di turisti locali, ma abbiam trovato due stanze tradizionali giapponesi per la nostra crew di Gigi Rüf, Elias Elhardt, il Pirate filmer Flo Eckhardt ed io. L’espressione “tradizionale giapponese” significa solo una cosa: sono talmente piccole che i letti, sottili materassini stesi a terra, devono essere ripiegati al mattino e messi via se si vuole far qualsiasi altra cosa a parte dormire. Sarebbe stata la nostra casa per due settimane.

Nel mattino ci alzammo presto e ci deliziammo della colazione giapponese. Stando seduti di fronte ad una zuppa miso, una bowl di riso e pesce crudo imparai un’altra lezione sul Giappone: la colazione è pranzo è cena. Il cibo è quasi sempre lo stesso.

Accendemmo la Hi-Ace ed alzammo le temperature, mentre ci fermammo al Seven-Eleven locale a prendere un po’ di sushi box. Uno stop di rifornimento che sarebbe diventato un rituale per la nostra crew nei giorni a venire. E non era solo la nostra crew a seguire rituali, anche quella di Seven-Eleven sembrava averne uno proprio – come tutte le mattine, alla stessa ora, delle cover strumentali di canzoni pop americane si udivano dallo stereo del piccolo shop. We were the only Western people in a hotel packed with local tourists, but found two traditional Japanese rooms to fit our crew of Gigi Rüf, Elias Elhardt, Pirate crew filmer Flo Eckhardt and myself. The expression “Traditional Japanese” rooms refers mainly to one thing: They´re so tiny that the beds, a thin mattress lying directly on the floor, has to be rolled up and stowed away every morning to make room for any activity besides sleeping. It should become our home for the following two weeks.

In the morning, we got up early and treated ourselves to a Japanese breakfast. Sitting in front of a miso soup, a bowl of rice and raw fish I learned another lesson about Japan: Breakfast is lunch is dinner. The food is almost all the same. We fired up the Hi-Ace and let the temperature inside slowly creep above freezing level, while we stopped at the local Seven-Eleven store to stack up on Sushi in a box. A supply stop which should become a ritual for our crew in the days to come. It was not just our crew that followed daily rituals, but the crew at the Seven-Eleven store seemed to have their own - as every morning, at the same time, the same instrumental covers of the same well known

crew, nel profondo backcountry sulle colline dietro Asahidake. È meglio se ti porti le ciaspole, perché questo è solo territorio di arrampicata, che può essere una bella impresa avendo 20km di attrezzatura sulle spalle. Ho visto un sacco di neve nella mia vita, ma penso di non aver mai visto qualcosa come quello che ho visto qui. Ma la neve non solo copre il suolo qui. In quest’area del Giappone, con la sua prossimità all’oceano, i fiocchi di neve non solo cadono ma si accumulano e crescono virtualmente. La neve non è più un manto di neve che copre il suolo qui, ma va sugli alberi e i lati delle case. Tutto diventa snowboard abile in questo paese delle meraviglie bianco. Abbiamo portato Gigi ed Elias, due dei più creativi freeriders al mondo, su questo set up in una sacra foresta giapponese piena di neve. E dal primo giorno hanno accolto il potenziale di questo posto, portando lo snowboarding dal suolo agli alberi. Risalivano linee, girando sopra e intorno agli alberi come se il suolo e la gravita non esistessero qui. Come se ci fossero leggi diverse in questo posto nelle deserte foreste, galleggiavano tra perfetti campi di powder sopra le nostre teste. It was time to head to the hill, to a secret zone courtesy of the Pirates crew, deep out in the backcountry in the hills behind Asahidake. You better bring your snowshoes, because this is hiking only territory, which can be a hard task with 20 kilos of camera gear strapped to your back. I have seen a lot of snow in my days, but I´m not sure if I´ve ever seen anything like we experienced there. But the snow doesn´t just cover the ground around here. In this area of Japan, with its proximity to the ocean the snowflakes do not just fall, but they accumulate and virtually grow. The snow is no longer one sheet covering the ground here, but it runs up trees and the sides of houses. Anything becomes rideable in this wonderland of white. We brought Gigi and Elias, two of the world´s most creative freeriders, to that setup of a ghostly snowed-in, sacred Japanese forest. And from the first day they harvested the potential of the place, taking snowboarding from the ground to the trees. They hiked lines, riding up and over trees as if ground and gravity did not matter here. As if there were different rules in place here in these de-

cia. Una delle tre pozze Onsen del nostro hotel, piscine comunali, fatte di terme naturali e molto popolari in quest’area del Giappone scaldarono le nostre povere ossa. Quando fu il momento di preparare le valigie, ci rendemmo conto di aver fatto molte amicizie nel nostro piccolo paese. Conoscevamo lo staff del nostro hotel e i ragazzi del parcheggio. Conoscevamo la polizia con la quale comunicammo attraverso un traduttore istantaneo su una app dell’iPhone, e conoscevamo i vigili del traffico locali. Sulla strada del ritorno, io e Gigi ci fermammo a Tokyo per 24 ore. E per quanto pensassi che Tokyo rappresentasse il Giappone prima di questo viaggio, sentii come se avessi già lasciato il paese quando partimmo via dal Narita Airport. Abbiamo fatto uno scalo divertente, ci siamo goduti tutti i benefici che una grande città può dare, abbiamo addirittura beccato degli amici e passato una serata insieme alla crew. Era il modo perfetto di terminare un viaggio, ma in qualche modo, per me il viaggio è finito quando abbiamo lasciato Hokkaido. Perché nonostante sia geograficamente che politicamente siano lo stesso paese, ora so che il Giappone è molto di più che una settimana a Tokyo.

serted forests, they were floating through perfect powder fields above our heads. We headed back to our hotel, tired and beaten, but with a smile on our face. One of the three Onsen baths in our hotel, communal pools, fed by natural hot springs and very popular in this area of Japan, warmed our weary bones.

When it was time to pack our bags, we had made quite a few friends in our little town. We knew the hotel crew and the guys at the parking. We knew the police who we communicated with through an instant translator iPhone app, and we knew the local traffic wardens. On our way back home, Gigi and me stopped over in Tokyo for 24 hours. And as much as I thought Tokyo represented Japan before this trip, I felt as if I´ve already left the country when we touched down at Narita Airport. We had a fun stopover, and treated ourselves to all the benefits of a big city, we even ran into some friends and had a night out with the crew. It was the perfect way to end an amazing trip, but in some way, the trip had already been over when we left Hokkaido. Because although geographically and politically the same country, I knew now, Japan is more than a week in Tokyo.

Il valore dell’amicizia è sempre difficile da valutare, è quasi impossibile capire quanto sei amico di una persona e quanta fiducia gli puoi donare. Nello snowboard questi valori vengono amplificati in modo esponenziale, ti trovi a condividere emozioni fortissime e delusioni pesantissime, con un amico che fino a qualche settimane prima non sapevi neanche di avere. In questa foto siamo stati da poco cacciati dallo spot dai vigili di Sestriere, Max ha chiuso il suo trick perfettamente, Andrea purtroppo non ha avuto il tempo necessario per portarlo a casa. Ore di macchina, ore di attesa, ore di pala per costruire lo spot, resi vani per lui.

Questo però non gli ha permesso di non essere felice per il suo compagno di crew e di non condividere questo momento di felicità che Max proprio non riusciva a nascondere. Il giorno dopo Max è stato il primo a mettersi sotto con la pala e a motivare Andrea, spronandolo a cacciare le sue paure e le sue titubanze, Max è stato anche il primo ad andarlo ad abbracciare quando finalmente Andrea ha chiuso il suo trick. Forse quest’inverno che non filmeranno più insieme, probabilmente si perderanno di vista, ma la loro amicizia sarà indelebile per tutta la vita, perché certi legami difficilmente vengono distrutti, certi legami sono per sempre.

The value of a friendship is always hard to evaluate, it’s almost impossible to understand how big is your friendship with someone and how much confidence you can give him. In snowboarding these values get amplified exponentially, you find yourself sharing strong emotions and huge disappointments with someone, with a friend that you didn’t even know you had few weeks before. In this picture we’ve been kicked off from the spot by the Sestriere police, Max has landed his trick perfectly, Andrea unfortunately didn’t have time enough to bring it home.

Hours of driving, hours of waiting, hours of shaping to prepare the spot turned to be useless for him. That didn’t stop him from being happy for his crew fellow and from sharing this happy moment that Max just couldn’t hide. The day after Max was the first one to start preparing the spot and motivate Andrea, encouraging him to escape from his fears and his hesitations, Max was also the first one who hugged Andrea when he finally landed his trick. Maybe this winter they won’t shoot together, probably they’ll lose sight of each other, but their friendship will last forever, because this kind of bonds can’t be easily destroyed, this kind of bonds are forever.
