Assignment 1: LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATIVE DIMENSION OF INTERIOR DESIGN

[20% Group]/ 5 weeks

As future Graduate Interior Designers, students must possess a broadvocabulary and understanding of contractual, professional and legislative terms used daily whether amongst clients, contractors, peers, authority or the general public. This assignment serves as an introduction to the standard of Professional Conduct and Practice. It aims to outline the general Professional Conduct and self-discipline expected of Interior Designers registered with the Board of Architects (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia). Students are required to refer documents that relate closely to the legal and regulatory framework in practice such as the Architects Act 1967, Architects Rules 1996, Uniform Building By-Laws 1984, PAM/MIID Contract and other regulatory provisions related to the profession. At the end of this exercise, students will engage in knowledge transfer amongst their peers to understand, question and later apply in their individual projects.

FORUM 1 : Architect’s Act Time: 12.00NOON-2.00PM TOPIC: Interior Design Licensure ABSTRACT : An interior designer’s work is not simply beautifying an interior space, it includes a blend of art and scientific studies in order to achieve a pleasant and functional space based on the users’ needs. It is a work of field which requires professional practices and training; however, a drastic quantity of unlicensed interior designers and firms can be found in the society nowadays. This can lead to doubts regarding the importance and the rights of having a license. Is a license really a necessity for practicing interior design?

FORUM 2: UNSDG Time: 12.00NOON-2.00PM TOPIC: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ABSTRACT : The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) serve as a high-level platform for collective policy creation and decision making. There are a total of 17 goals in the UNSDG and it consist of factors such as ending poverty, quality of education, economic growth, gender equality etc. These 17 goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The 2030 Agenda launched in the 2015 is aimed to end poverty and hunger, realize the human rights of all, achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women, and ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources. Discuss its importance and how it impacts policy makers, architects & interior designers. How can you play a role?

FORUM 3 : Fire Safety Time: 12.00NOON-2.00PM TOPIC: The extent of responsibility of a designer regarding fire safety ABSTRACT : Ultimately, fire protection design in buildings is provided to protect users in an event of a fire or to reduce the risk of property and human-life loss. However, if the public users do not have a clear understanding of the design, or are unable to perform as designers’ expectations in an emergency, will the design serve its best purpose? For instance, a public user who does not fully understand how a fire extinguisher works, or users who failed to understand instructions during an emergency. In other instances, public users who lack knowledge or do not follow the rules on fire safety, therefore resulting in great harm. How much can a designer do to ensure the safety of the public? In fact, fire safety design can only reduce risk, and it requires public cooperation to work effectively. On one hand, strict UBBL-laws are important for designers to follow strictly, on the other hand, should public users’ understanding of fire prevention and awareness to follow rules strictly need to be strengthened?

01 Accessibility & Universal Design Project Implementation ZaSve Universal Design SUMMARY -

Professor. Naziaty Mohd Yaacob explains in depth of her fundamentals and definition of “Universal Design” The design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people (the user) regardless of their age, size, ability, and disability. An environment (or any building, product, or service in that environment) should be designed to meet the needs of all people (the user) who wishes to use it. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the population, it is a fundamental condition of a good design.

Naziaty Yaacob talks about functionality of design with disability access in mind. The “Stramp” combines a unique combination of ramps for the disabled, seating units, stairs with complementing rails. With that being said, she exaggerates that good design with practicality can definitely be made that’s accessible to all. After explaining the complications that came along with the housing development previously, Prof. Naziaty explains the critical dimensions and anthropometrics and ergonomics of the disable and is used as a tool to go about their interior design. It is important to avoid future complications that often occurs during constructions. I very much appreciated her topic of interest as I, too, was working on the same subject matter that is the Disabled Community and the by laws to ensure they too receive the same rights and accessibilites in the city like everyone else. She is very passionate about it and it shows!

The dos and don’ts of financial habits to “tell your money where to go” 50/30/20 Rule of Budgeting is DISCOURAGED for fresh graduates, especially post pandemic Expense’s tracking is a hassle! New apps that are useful to track spending are Moneylover, MAE and Spendee Budget

The above screenshots explain the do’s that Mr Fairuz Izwan has highlighted in his talk. I find them very useful as I wouldn’t exactly know where to start with managing my finances, independently, after I graduate in a few months’ time. He was very kind to answer each question and relate them back to his personal experiences he has faced before his marriage. The engagement he had by carefully a ddressing the floor’s question was adequate. I will be sure to follow these rules as I step into my career life in the near future as a foundation to my personal finances.

03 Working on World Class Projects in Game & Entertainment Industry Passion Republic SUMMARY -

How content is made in a game briefly (drawing, design, and development) The script of the game is thrown at the game makers, and they create frames of the storyline from the brief. Look for references!

Reminding us nothing comes easy and hard work is always required in the working world. Constantly evolving in your study techniques and finding a way that works best for you and your client. Overall, I think the talk was quite alright. Although I was expecting more in-depth presentations of how the process to create these beautiful images and his thought process rather than work experience. But I did however get the chance to listen in on his confidence and perseverance working in renown gaming companies, which is pretty cool.

04 Best Practices and Personal Branding Strategy Using LinkedIn LinkedIn COURSE CONTENT/REFLECTION -

Aegene Ong, mentions that LinkedIn is a platform which we connect and look for new career and job opportunities. Present yourself like how you support your favourite brand from their product advertising. Nike and Adidas have a good brand strategy for examples. Include your values and goals when you describe yourself and make sure it’s positive!

There is a difference between LinkedIn profiles and your resumes. We could reach out to many potential companies at once. It also shares our networks and past experiences. Aegene shares a few hot tips to boost up your chances of being selected like using a suitable profile picture, providing sufficient detail in your description, keeping it straight forward and limit it to 1-2 sentences to share ourselves as a person. Building our professional network is crucial as well as company recruitments are most likely to select you based on your connections by 50%. We should also be mindful on how we can expand our networks strategically such as common interests, similar companies we’ve worked with, engagements, referrals, etc.

It was a great sharing session and LinkedIn indeed sounds useful even for a fresh grad. Its interface is straight forward and the strategies Ms. Aegene has listed for us has been really helpful!

W05 Best Practices In Curating Architectural Design CV & Portfolio Veritas Design Group SUMMARY -

Alif Arif explains that it takes an average recruiter 7.4 seconds to view a resume, that makes 8 seconds to make an impression. Include mission statements/objective at the top of the resume Clear flow with appropriate title and heading size Some simple rules are to keep it only on a page and keep it all relevant experiences. Moreover, keep it within 5 – 10 past year experiences, and include pictures of personal projects.

06 Enhancing Your Business Acumen Through Creative Arts Enfiniti Academy COURSE CONTENT/REFLECTION Joanna Bessey from Enfiniti Academy touches the term creativity and how pivotal it really is for businesses. Creativity typically means the use of imagination, an ability to form a picture in your mind or even concepts. But the creative arts develop our soft skills, builds our confidence and increases our charisma. Thus, it is not limited to just creative streamed students rather it broadens out to all other fields as well.

She made a lot of sense by applying how necessary it is to develop personal character while aligning it to professional industries while tying it back to creativity. I really appreciated her talk and would definitely be interested in attending her workshops to further improve my soft skills as I branch out in my future job opportunities.

Assignment 3: Formation of Design Practice

[20% in pairs]/ 6 weeks

Objective: This assignment sets the scenario for students to embark on an ENTREPRENEURIAL journey. In deciding the desired business context, students need to evaluate critically the data obtained in Project 1. In doing this assignment, students will be clearer of their own vision and mission in forming their own design company within the business context. This isachieved through reflection of one’s own action and learning in applyingeffective business practices. MLO 2: Differentiate the types of a business formation, process of setting up a design practice and standards of professional conduct. Task: Students are to apply their knowledge in Assignment 1 & 2, relating back toActs & Legal matters. This assignment will be a basic working paper for setting up a design practice. Students are required to plan, organize & form their own envision of a design practice (Sole Proprietor, Partnership or Body Corporate) with a realistic approach. Students will have to be creative and resourceful in planning and forming their very own design business. Students are advised to obtain information with related professional bodies and institutions (via online, example websites & facebook) for information and procedures as well as engage in peer discussions.

FINAL PROJECT: BY-LAW APPLICATION AND PREREQUISITES FOR BUILDING PLAN SUBMISSION [40% Individual]/ 6 weeks

Objective: This assignment allows students to apply their knowledge gained in Project 1 into their individual projects in AIDP2. Each regulatory, legislative, and technical provision must be illustrated into an informative report presentation with dimensions, drawings (including isometrics) and materials where necessary. Students will be assessed based on their ability to explain and apply knowledge and understanding to their Final AIDP2 Project. This exercise serves as a working paper for AIDP. Students’ design shall not change or be influenced by the laws due to both module’s time constrain factor, instead, it acts as an overall guideline to address the next forthcoming steps before finalizing the building plans. Thus, students are asked to identify non-compliance by marking an (x) and describing the next course of action for design rectification. This rigorous process is essential to ensure compliance with the law before the drawings can be submitted to the Local Authority.
