Jesse Frohman speaks through the lens

Smile! Today with talk with famed New York based photographer Jesse Frohman. Jesse has shot for the likes of Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vogue, Estee Lauder, Def Jam Records, and a multitude of celebrities. One of those celebrities was the lead singer of the band Nirvana-Kurt Cobain. Jesse took the last extensive photos of Kurt before his untimely death. Those photos are documented in his book, Kurt Cobain, The Last Session. In addition to this book, Jesse’s other works can be found in a multitude of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the National Portrait Gallery, along with exhibits in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Moscow.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Roslyn Heights.

Q: What do you love about Long Island?

A: I love Long Island’s beaches.

Q: How did you get to photograph Kurt Cobain.

A: I was commissioned by The London Observer’s Sunday Magazine to photograph Kurt and the band at the height of their popularity right before a concert at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC.

Q: You wanted to do the shoot in NYC’s Central Park, but his management nixed it, why?

A: His management said Kurt wasn’t able to go outside but we could shoot in the conference room.

Q: So, was Kurt alright?

A: He was 3 hours late, not feeling well and his management only gave me thirty minutes to get it done when I originally had five hours. The photos came out great because it was one of those moments when you are under pressure, you just start taking candid photos without giving the talent too much direction. This turned out to be one of my most important shoots.

Q: When Kurt passed you were contacted by just about every magazine out there and they wanted a cover photo from you from the shoot. What happened with that.

A: Plain and simple. Kurt wasn’t feeling well the day of the shoot and he never took off his sunglasses so, all my photos of him had him wearing his sunglasses. In the magazine business you need ‘eye contact’ for a cover shot and I didn’t have any photos of him without his sunglasses so, no cover shot.

Q: What went through your mind when you heard he passed?

A: I was shocked! I found out via a call from the New York Times asking me my thoughts on his death.

Q: Who would you like to photograph?

A: The Dalai Lama.

Q: How did you get into photography?

A: I went to the University of Michigan, I took business and economics, thinking I’d work on Wall Street. I took a few photography electives to wrap up my degree and when I took time off to contemplate going back for my MBA, I started assisting other photographers and caught the bug. I happened to get to work for the legendary photographer Irving Penn. He became my mentor and here I am.

Q: What makes for a great photographer?

A: Have passion for what you are shooting.

Q: Hamptons hide-a-way?

A: The beach. Be inconspicuous in a conspicuous place.

Q: The Hamptons in three words?

A: Memories, beauty, and fun.

Q: Besides Kurt’s shoot, what are some of your other favorites?

A: That’s too difficult to answer but, I like to shoot advertisements, editorials, and still life.

Q: Words to live by?

A: Always have gratitude.

Q: IG or X?

A: IG.

Q: What are you listening to now?

A: 60’s LA folk rock.

Q: Color or B&W photos.

A: Both. They each have their place

Q: Music on or off during a photo shoot?

A: Off

Q: Anything coming down the pike from you?

A: Yes. I’m working on a retrospective book and a book about still life and landscape. Currently, I do have a book out about Kurt titled, Kurt Cobain: The Last Session.

Keep up with Jesse on IG and X

BOSTON Hello

Frasier has re-entered the building. Everyone knows his name because he’s listening, especially when it comes to beer. We caught up with TV star Kelsey Grammer of Cheers and Frasier fame to talk about life and his new entrepreneurial endeavor, Faith American Brewing Company, located right here in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Coming up on the 40th anniversary of Frasier’s debut on Cheers and the 30th anniversary of his aptly named show-Frasier, Dr. Crane …. I mean Kelsey Grammer, is once again reprising his Frasier character with the reboot of his character’s namesake show Frasier. The reboot is scheduled to air on Paramount+ on October 12th but for those who don’t subscribe to streaming services, CBS TV will air the first two episodes on October 17th.

In a nutshell, the iconic Seattle skyline is replaced with that of Boston’s, the Blues are still calling, and he still doesn’t know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs, but in Frasier fashion he heads-full force-back to Boston to reconnect with his son Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, and attempts to make new friends, forge new relationships and tries to fulfill a dream or two.

We first ran into Kelsey at 75 Main restaurant in Southampton, where he was promoting his new endeavor-beer making-via his Faith American Brewing Company. Kelsey radiated a passion for his business that was infectious. He mingled, pressed the flesh, and poured his heart and beer out to the excited and gleeful crowd.

Q: When and why did you found Faith American Brewing Company?

A: The company was founded in 2015 and it’s somewhat of a homage to my grandfather. He wanted to buy a Miller beer franchise in Texas but never did. So, in someway I’m fulfilling his dream.

Q: Why New York for the brewery?

A: I have this land, an old dairy farm, and I

thought it would be the perfect place to start a brewery.

Q: How did you come up with the company name?

A: It’s named after my daughter Faith, along with me having Faith, and having Faith in America.

Q: What’s been the hardest part of being in the beer business?

A: The red tape of getting the necessary approvals to produce and distribute the product.

Q: What inspires you?

A: My Faith.

Q: Three foods you always keep in your fridge?

A: Pickled okra, cocktail onions, and salami.

Q: What makes you smile?

A: My kids, wife, people, and life.

Q: Last person you text?

A: The septic system guy.

Q: Who’s been the most supportive of you in life?

A: My mom.

Q: Favorite vacation spot?

A: Upstate New York.

Q: What do you like to drink besides Faith American beer?

A: Coffee-latte.

Q: Glass half full or half empty?

A: I’m going to quote my wife, “people who say the glass is half full or half empty are missing the point that the glass can be refilled.”

Q: Any new projects in the works?

A: Yes. I’m working on a book about my sister Karen called Karen. She was taken from us in 1975 at the age of 18 due to a robbery gone horribly wrong.

Q: How can we learn more about Faith American beer?

A: Visit our website: Faithamerican brewingcompany.com and if you don’t see it where you shop, please let your local grocer or beer distributor know and ask them to carry it.

Latin Ignition: Magic of Art - NYFW SS24 Fashion Show at the Guggenheim

Every September in NYC, the Art and Fashion worlds converge creating a spectacular array of colors, culture, & couture. What better venue to host the fabulous “Latin Ignition: Magic of Art” Fashion Show than the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Latin Ignition was a style & fashion extravaganza produced and hosted by Grammy Awardwinning producer Emilio Estefan Jr, and Entrepreneur & Philanthropist Consuelo

Vanderbilt Costin for Soho Muse. Soho Muse is a Vertical Social Network for the Creative Industry, founded by Vanderbilt, who sparkled in a gorgeous gold studded, black cutout gown by Marc Bouwer.

“We came together because 18% of the U.S. market is comprised of Latin Americans, but it’s not given enough attention.” Vanderbilt said. So, on Friday, September 8, 2023, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Ignition featured four Latin designers: Cesar Galindo, Nabys Vielman, Laura Garcia, and Alvin Valley. Galindo’s show consisted of bold prints, & flowing fabrics. A plunging back, multi-colored sequin jumpsuit caught my eye. Vielman’s timeless elegant designs are inspired by color as demonstrated by the shocking pink outfits in both the men’s and women’s collections. Garcia, a sustainable designer showcased timeless silhouettes with unique details that were

feminine with an edge. Valley, showed caftans, minidresses & bikinis. Aussie pop star, Natasha Bedingfield graced the runway for Valley, who made his triumphant return to NYFW after a 10-year absence.

Latin Grammy Award-winning band Los Rabanes & DJ Hex Hector energized & engaged the crowd with pulsating Latin rhythms at the after party, held in the rotunda of the Guggenheim. The Latin Ignition experience was an epic explosion of energy, fashion & fun; everyone had a blast. Kudos to Montgomery FrazierCreative Director of the show and Lawlor Media who handled PR.

Montgomery & Ben: More than an Alzheimer’s Story, A Love Story

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This isn’t just a story about Alzheimer’s and dementiarelated illness, but a story of love and commitment, devotion and resilience.

I have known Montgomery Frazier and Ben Mindich for more than a decade; we met at several charity events and bonded over our love of fashion. Montgomery & Ben were fixtures on the NY Social scene. Montgomery is an Image Guru, and former Fashion Director at MTV. Ben was dubbed “the peacock of Saks 5th Ave” and led the fine jewelry division in over 20 million in sales during his Saks tenure.

Montgomery & Ben have been together for 12 years and got married in 2015 at Consuelo Vanderbilt’s summer camp in the Adirondacks.

I had a chance to speak with Montgomery recently to see how he & Ben are coping with Ben’s Lewy Body Dementia diagnosis. He said “it hit like a thief in the night; they didn’t see this coming.” Dementia has no respect for persons, and can befall anyone at any time. Montgomery noted that he has found the CaringKind organization to be a

valuable resource in learning more about the disease & providing support for caregivers. New developments are always happening that’s making us more hopeful in battling dementia but we must remain vigilant and be a strong advocate for our loved ones; paying keen attention to prescribed medication and their effects is vital. After a recent revelation that Type 3 Diabetes can be a precursor to dementia, Montgomery recommends dietary changes; he saw a big improvement in Ben’s clarity when they decreased intake of sugar & processed foods.

As with any life altering illness, coping with the financial aspects is a major challenge; to offset some of the costs, Montgomery launched a GoFundMe campaign, & more recently started BenMo-2.0 – an online e-commerce Athleisure & Homegear Boutique on Shopify b90751. myshopify.com. Please visit & support.

VICTOR dE SOUZA NYFW SS24 FASHION SHOW

Over 200 exhilarated and stylishly attired folks filled the opulently chandeliered ballroom at 3 West Club on Tuesday, September 12, 2023; they were eagerly awaiting the Victor dE Souza Sirens & Muses SS24 Collection. The lavishly appointed room was configured so that almost everyone had a front row seat to witness the brilliance of a Victor dE Souza NYFW Show. The energy & electricity in the room were palpable. His show was met with excitement and glee as 31 delectable looks sauntered through the room; each one as fabulous as the next. It was a show of sustainably made, well-constructed, perfectly fitted garments inspired

by Coastal Dreams; from micro shorts paired with structured print embroidery tops to a midriff bearing striped 2-piece gown. It was a smorgasbord for the eyes; a feast for the senses.

I have often described Victor dE Souza as a meld between the late greats: Oscar de la Renta and Alexander McQueen. His keen attention to detail & sumptuous fabric selection perfectly paired with edginess and elements of surprise, make dE Souza’s garments true works of art. In their swag bags, attendees were treated to the divine scent of Navitus x Victor dE Souza; a sexy, captivating, & magnetic new perfume by the couture designer. “The Joke Man”

as they say, the rest is history.

Q: You embraced technology (1970’s version) to propel yourself. Why?

A: I saw comedians like George Carlin and Robert Klein make comedy albums, so I did as well. I worked in a recording studio, so I knew how to do it and after six months as a comic I made my own comedy album and sold it after my shows. This was in 1979, a full ten years before other comics/artists did the same thing.

Q: Speaking of using technology, in 1979, you started a joke line 516-922-WINE (9463), why?

A: First, the joke line is still active and going strong all these years later. Second, I wanted to get my jokes out and I want to make people laugh.

Q: Why the documentary?

did you plan out what you were going to do when you left?

A: No. I just winged it and went with the flow.

Q: Is it true that you can remember every joke you ever heard?

A: Yes! I can remember every joke and who told it to me.

Q: What comic(s) did you look up to?

A: Rodney Dangerfield, a fellow Long Islander.

Q: Favorite moment from the show?

A: When we went to the Abbey Road studios in London (where the Beatles recorded) and did our show there for a week.

Q: Is there anyone you’d like to meet?

A: I’d like to meet Sir Paul McCartney. He’s a joke junkie like me. He came to the studio six months after I left. As usual I’m a day late and a dollar short……

Q: Favorite moment from the show?

The pages of Hamptons

Storyboard welcome Long Island legend and the comedic genius behind some of the funniest skits ever heard on radio, Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling. We sat down with Jackie to talk all things comedy, his famed “dial-ajoke” phone number, and his new documentary “Joke Man”.

Q: Who is Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling?

A: I’m a guy who loves to tell

jokes and make people laugh.

Q: What made you become a comedian?

A: My whole family is funny and are jokesters. I always loved music and jokes and after graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, I joined a band, worked in construction and after a bit, I decided to come back to New York and try my hand at comedy at an open mic night at Catch a Rising Star in NYC and

A: I want people to know, from me, what I did on the Howard Stern Show. Many people that know me told me that I have a great story to tell and that I needed to do a documentary to get my story out and set the record straight. Go to Jokemanmovie.com to read all about it, view the trailer, and find out where you can watch it.

Q: Who were some of the guests in the Joke Man doc?

A: Billy West, Artie Lange-who replaced me on the show, Sean Young, Penn Jillette, and Willie Nelson.

Q: Why did you leave the Howard Stern Show?

A: I believe, with my contribution to the show, that I should have been better compensated. We couldn’t come to an agreement, so I left.

Q: Before you left the show,

A: That’s too hard to answer but, I was always impressed that people who came on the show knew who I was. Since you’re telling me that Kelsey Grammer is on this issue’s cover, I can say he’s one of the nicest people I’ve met on the show. One time when he was on, and after the show was over, he came back behind the console to shake mine and Fred’s (Norris) hand and tell us how funny we are. Super nice guy!

Q: Any upcoming shows?

A: Yes! 10/7 @ Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club in NJ, 10/14 @ The Razz Room in PA, 10/19 @ the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville, NY, 10/21 @ McGuire’s Comedy Club in Smithtown, NY, and on 12/8 @ the Palm Beach Kennel Club in WPB-FL.

Q: How can we follow and keep up with all that you’re doing?

A: Go to Jokeland.com to keep up with all that I’m doing. Follow me on IG and X @Jackiemartling and book me on Cameo.com for a personalized message.
