Winter Pet Tips

TURN UP THE HEAT WITH CHEF SOUTHAMPTON animal shelter FOUNDATION

• If it’s too cold you for, it’s probably too cold for your pets! Shorten their length of outside time and outfit with coats or sweaters if appropriate. • Wipe pets off with a towel after coming in from the snow. Get the little snowballs out of long fur, as those can cause frost bite. • Use pet-safe ice melt. When going to public places with your pet, be sure to wipe their paws after walks. Certain ice melts contain chemicals that are hazardous if they remain on the skin or if they’re ingested. • Check your cars for cats or small animals before starting it. Bang on the hood to make sure no animals tried to seek shelter in your car. 102 Old Riverhead Rd WEST • Hampton Bays, NY 11946 www.southamptonanimalshelter.com • 631-728-PETS (7387)

Yachties

Elizabeth Frankini

Shane Coopersmith

A

yachtie with a mission to teach us about the importance of sustainability. We all know Shane Coopersmith from Below Deck, season 8, with Captain Lee on the yacht-My Seanna. Shane was cast as a deck hand who is an expert on sustainability. For him, this was an epic and once in a lifetime experience. Shane grew up being sustainable, for which he credits his mom. Shane has seen how humans can destroy our planet by polluting it and how they can protect it by recycling. His dedication to protecting our planet runs so deep that he enrolled at UC Berkeley and graduated with a degree in sustainability. He’s using his knowledge to make a difference in the world by teaching about sustainability in a high school in Southern California. “It feels good to teach the next generation about sustainability.” There are plenty of ways to be sustainable, from using reusable items such as: bottles, coolers, utensils, and cups to helping to protect the environment by using a reef safe sunscreen. Shane suggests Live Sunny sun-care sunscreen, a product line of sun protection made by his friend Maddie. IG: @livesunnysuncare Shane is always on a mission to learn and his stint working on the high seas offered him an abundance of opportunities to add to his knowledge base. A few lessons stuck with him, put in a solid day’s work, power through those moments of exhaustion and work as a team. Teamwork makes the dream work! IG: @Sustainable.shane

went dockside with Bravo TV’s Below Deck season 8’s Yachtie, Elizabeth Frankini. Like many of Bravo’s yachties, she grew up on Long Island-Malverne, and is proud of her roots and is excited to talk all things Below Deck. We dropped anchor and chatted away. What have you been up to? I recently started to film a new docuseries with Camille Lamb from Below Deck season 10. What do you miss about Long Island? I miss the pizza, bagels, and the beach but, I really miss my fav restaurantUmberto’s in Elmont. You’ve been to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, what do you love about the Hamptons? Well, I love the Hamptons for being luxurious, oceanic and vibie and I enjoy the East End’s overall open space, farms and of course the ocean. Who’s the last Bravolebrity you text and if you could staff your own Below Deck yacht, who would be on it? I last text Chef Rachel and I would have her, Captain Sandy, Kate Chastain, Camille Lamb, Jessica More, Ciara, and Ross on my yacht. You originally worked with Captain Lee, what did you

learn from him? I learned that it is important to be authentic both on and off camera. Now, with all the talk about the new Barbie movie, what type of Barbie are you? I’m a cosmic Barbie. Up next is everyone’s favorite game, Cyn’s This or That! Are you ready? Yes, I am! Is it Long Beach or Jones Beach?-Long Beach, Roosevelt Field or Americana Manhasset?-Roosevelt Field, Mermaid or Unicorn?-Mermaid, Cover of Cosmo or Cover of Vogue?-Vogue, Long Island Iced Tea or Sex on The Beach?-Long Island Iced Tea and finally, what’s your tagline? “There is a reason why, always.” IG @Bettabird

Anastasia Surmava

on Motherhood and life after Bravo’s Below Deck By Maureen Patricia

W

e caught up with Anastasia Surmava from season 4 of Bravo TV’s HIT series, Below Deck Mediterranean. We discussed being a new mom and her Below Deck experience. As with anything else, Anastasia states, being a new mom has its learning curve and motherhood is no different. Anastasia stresses being patient, be good to yourself and others and never discount what others may be going through. For her post-partum recovery, Anastasia used recovery drops from ANYA. They’re a vitamin C and energy B-12 drop that you add to your water. She also used the Hands-Down app. This is a community that recommends products that moms and primary care givers might like to use. She also listens to the owner of Hands-Down, Jenna Sereni’s podcast, Mommy Needs A Minute, where moms get together and discuss motherhood. Besides mommy duty, do you get a chance to speak with any other castmates? I recently texted Hannah and we met up in London. Even though we speak every day, this is the first time in 5 years we’ve seen one another in-person. Being a world traveler, have you ever been to the Hamptons? Yes, I met up with the Summer House cast and went to one of their parties, it was super fun.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Speaking of, how would you describe the Hamptons? The Hamptons are salty, sexy, and spicy. There’s always something fun going on. What did you enjoy most about being there? The beach! I love it! Being that you spent most of your time in beachwear, while on the show, what’s your go-to Summer style? I like to wear a giant oversized t-shirt, biker shorts, and Birkenstocks to lounge around. When I do get ‘dressed’ I like to wear a Summer dress, cute hat, and sandals. As for a bathing suit, let’s just say it was a bikini before the baby came along. Would you ever go back to being on Below Deck? I would go back only as a guest. I would want Mathew Shea to be the chef because I really want to try his cooking. I’d also want Hannah and Aisha there. Alex Radcliffe would be the deckhand so I could mess with him and of course I’d want Captain Lee to be at the helm. Since so many people have taglines on various reality shows, what would be yours? My tagline would be, “Keep up, otherwise you are going to be left behind.” Since Barbie, the movie, is the talk of the town, what type of Barbie would you be? I would be a business Barbie. I would wear a power suit, high Louboutin’s and I would not take crap from anyone. IG @Nastiasurmava

Embrace the Chill for a Fitter You!

Staying active and healthy in Winter!

By: Stanislav Kravchenko

I

’m Stanislav Kravchenko, the Founder of ONEFIT Plan-a virtual fitness program that provides customized workouts and coaching support. The most important thing I’ve learned in my work, 12+ years as a NYC-based personal trainer, is that health isn’t seasonal. Those who lead the healthiest lives understand that our physical well-being is more than just prepping for our “beach bods” throughout the Spring. That’s why I’m here to help you stay fit, as the leaves fall and the air chills, so that we can avoid the annual anxiety of March madness. We’ve heard it before: Winter is coming! For many, this may signify a time to take your foot off the pedal. A time that we naturally find comfort in a sedentary lifestyle and tasty comfort foods. Winter means gathering with family and friends for the holidays, partaking in social events, consuming alcohol and high caloric meals, and staying inside which leads us to taking less steps than usual. It’s vital to find balance and it’s quite possible to do so in a manageable way. All it takes is a little preparation for the change of seasons, and you can decrease the typical stress associated with the drop in temperatures and motivation. Prioritizing your health by staying active throughout the winter is crucial to combatting the seasonal blues and maintaining an overall wellbeing. Let’s look at some practical tips and activities that can help you embrace the chill and stay energized, fit, and healthy, even amidst the dark winter days. Embrace the change with strength. Use the shift in seasons to your advantage. Instead of fighting it, prepare yourself with appropriately aligned goals. Winter is a great

time for us to focus on lean muscle mass and strength training. Gone are the days of summer cuts and restricted calories. Set yourself up for success and plan around the inevitable increase in your caloric intake and pair it with heavy strength sessions. Winter is a great time to take a little rest

Challenge yourself with new movements and reignite your boring cardio routine with those classic winter favorites. These seasonal sports are fantastic! They not only burn calories, but they are also a great way to improve your stability, mobility, balance, and coordination along with strengthening your core and

from dieting and center our goals around gains in the gym. I suggest strength training 2-4 times per week during the winter. Include an indoor sport or cardio activity to keep your body moving. Lean into Winter Sports: Winter isn’t all moody and dark, it can actually be a lot of fun! Snow sports, like skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating are things we certainly can’t do in the warmer weather. Take advantage of the season and participate in winter sports.

improving your cardiovascular system. Discover at home fitness. As we all learned the hard way during COVID, just because we’re stuck at home, doesn’t mean we’re stuck being inactive. With technology today, we have so many options for how we can stay active from the comfort of our own living rooms. Explore fitness apps, and virtual programs that have a variety of classes you wouldn’t typically take during the warmer weather. Very little

equipment is generally required and learning body weight exercises, that you can tap into at your convenience, is a life hack for the books. Free trials and app access normally trend during the holiday season. Sign up and find your favorites or hire a virtual coach to guide you in the right direction. Still uncertain? If you are looking for a more personalized workout that is based on your location, equipment availability, schedule, past injuries or simply want a bit more guidance, see www.onefit.com. We are a truly personalized online program. ONEFIT Plan even provides you with a coach, which may be the extra support you need to get you through the winter. Sign up online and we will schedule an assessment and free trial. Prioritize Hydration. Surprisingly enough, becoming dehydrated in the winter is quite common. Though it may not feel as hot as summer, staying hydrated remains essential. Remember that drinking water isn’t reserved for warm days only! The cold, dry air can further lead to dehydration, so ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Embracing the chill and staying active during winter is vital for a well-balanced lifestyle and overall wellbeing. By exploring indoor fitness, enjoying winter sports, staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, and trying various activities, you can keep yourself energized and motivated throughout the colder months. With these tips and advice, you can make the most of the winter season and nurture your physical and mental health. If you would like me to plan your program it’s as easy as signing up today at www.onefit.com. So let’s get your free trial going and let me help you get fitness cozy this winter. The Quiet Grace of Crystal Therapy By: Kathryn Leary

I

A

s a yoga teacher for over 15 years and a regular practitioner for more than 20 years, I’ve now added crystals and earth stones to my yoga practice. Holding a stone between my palms when hands are in prayer pose; or allowing crystals to rest in my palms during savasana—the moments when the body absorbs the benefits of the posture—I am also absorbing the benefits of these earth treasures. Out of a desire to help people calm their minds, move their body, and nourish their soul, in these challenging times we face, I co-founded a wellness company, OneFirelight.com— that streams yoga, meditation, Pilates,

cardio, strength training, balance, and mobility classes. Our wonderful, gifted instructors have created unique classes using crystals and earth stones to round out our offerings. Used as weights, the stones support muscle toning, strengthening, as well as restoring and nurturing the body through their natural properties. The quiet grace of crystal therapy promotes the idea of savoring life just a little more deeply. Why not gaze at a lovely crystal basket on your desk and smile, feeling its warmth and positive energy? Sit still, hold a crystal, take deep inhales, and allow the radiant energy of that crystal to flow through you. As you exhale, feel gratitude for life and the empowering divine energy that is truly all your own. About the Author

’ve loved earth stones all my life. I remember sweet times as a little girl, collecting rocks on my walks through parks and playgrounds. Later at home with my brothers, we would break open my stone treasures, with a hammer, to marvel at the sparkly crystalline centers. No wonder, decades later, I’ve become an avid collector of gemstones and specimens of our wondrous planet earth. Not only do I cherish and celebrate their exquisite beauty; I have studied and come to deeply appreciate the benefit their vibration brings to us. Sitting still, holding a crystal or earth stone in my hand, I am almost instantly able to rest, re-set, and renew my spirit. Sitting long enough, focusing on my breath to quiet my mind and deepen my presence with this stone, I eventually feel the pulsing of my heartbeat through my hands. It is a wondrous feeling to connect with the earth in this way, and to engage with the properties and energy this crystal is returning to me. All stones have a vibration and qualities that can enhance the beauty of life in many ways. Baskets with crystals are visibly present in my home to add more grace, style, and comfort to my everyday life. Stones that I especially love working with are Rose Quartz, Selenite, and Copper. Rose Quartz is a crystal of compassion, of love for self and others, offering gentleness, release of stress and soothing vibrations. Selenite helps to clear energy blockages and negativity, to cleanse and purify within, and to promote enlightenment. Copper is an earth stone that encourages vitality, focus, initiative, and optimism. It also promotes circulation and is thought to soothe arthritis and joint pain.

arrying sustainability with traditional perfumery, Fragrance Du Bois is a renowned French luxury fragrance brand known for its commitment to creating exceptional perfumes of the highest quality. With a global presence across 45 countries, Fragrance Du Bois collaborates with renowned perfumers to utilize scent ingredients in unique and unfamiliar ways, creating an olfactory journey like none other. In response to the increasing demand for its exquisite fragrances in North and South America, in June of this year, Fragrance Du Bois announced the opening of its new office and company in New York. Joining their U.S. based team, there are two industry professionals: Gandy Bahsas, as the Vice President of the Americas and Luis Mario Pinedo Lewit, as the Marketing Manager of the Americas. With the support of this new team, the brand has started strengthening relationships with its different retailers and partners around the Americas by supporting them with events and campaigns, and by providing resources to help them grow Fragrance Du Bois within their points of sale. As part of these efforts, Fragrance Du Bois decided to work with Osswald NYC, to organize an event to celebrate their new partnership with this store as well as to celebrate the launch of their new fragrance Lovers, the third addition to their For Lovers Collection. Tanja Dreiding Wallace, owner of Osswald, and Dustin Lujan, Manager and Business Partner of Osswald in the United States, were key players in the planification of this successful event. Osswald was founded 102 years ago in Zurich, Switzerland, by Tanja’s grandfather. Once head of the company, she then decided to open this prestigious store in NYC. Being a long standing and renowned business, offering the greatest quality fragrances and beauty products, both parties knew that Fragrance Du Bois was an ideal fit for this store, located in the heart of Nolita, in NYC. With the opening of this new Osswald location, their team agreed that it was the perfect time to do an event with their new fragrance partner, as a celebration for this new beginning, and as an official introduction to all the exciting plans that Osswald and Fragrance Du Bois have coming up. Fragrance Du Bois’ For Lovers Collection tells an unfolding love story with fragrance, from the dizzying woody flirtation of Cavort at first, to the sweetly irresistible clandestine affairs of Secret Tryst, and arriving finally in the passionate and joyous throws of the latest release, Lovers. Lovers is a perfume built on the sweetness of true love, an aphrodisiac coupling of fruits, spices, and floral woods. The For Lovers Collection has been incredibly popular with a story everyone can relate to; after all, everybody loves somebody. The recent release of “Lovers” completely sold out within five days and has helped Fragrance Du Bois drive global sales and demand, with a waiting list already in place for the next production.

Celebrity Chef Stuart O’Keeffe

By Joseph Palmisano

L

et’s get our SIZZLE on!!! Today, we go behind the apron with celebrity Chef Stuart O’Keeffe. He’s spilling more than tea, he’s filling our plates with all things food, fun, Housewives, and Hamptons HAUTNESS! Q: What made you decide to become a chef? A: My journey into the culinary world was

ignited by countless joyful hours spent cooking alongside my mom and aunt. The delight I found in this experience was undeniable, so I seized the opportunity and embarked on a path that led me to enroll in a comprehensive 4-year culinary arts degree program at the D.I.T Institute of Technology situated in the heart of Dublin, Ireland.

Q: How long have you been a chef? A: I have been a chef for over 20 years. Q: Describe food in 3 words? A: Satisfying, aromatic, diverse. Q: Do you prefer to cook at home, eat out, or take in? A: When it comes to meals, my heart is all

about home-cooked goodness. But you know what really gets me excited on a lazy Sunday night? Indulging in some takeout magic, and without a doubt, it’s Chinese food that always hits the spot for me! Q: Favorite meal to order in a restaurant? A: Hands down Steak Frites with a

peppercorn sauce.

Q: Favorite take-in meal? A: When it’s time for some take-in comfort,

my ultimate favorites are Chinese BBQ ribs that are just finger-licking good, paired with a hearty cashew chicken and fragrant fried rice. It’s a takeout combo that never fails to satisfy those cravings! Q: Favorite meal to cook? A: Oh, I’ve got this go-to dish that’s an

absolute winner–red wine braised short ribs, tender and succulent, served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes, with glazed carrots that add that touch of sweetness. Perfection! Q: Favorite food? A: BBQ spare ribs, ALWAYS! Q: What ingredients should we all have in the kitchen? A: Essential kitchen ingredients: Olive oil,

garlic, onions, my LOVELY SEASONINGS, and a variety of fresh herbs. Q: Chef secret we can all use in the kitchen? A: Here’s a pro tip for roasting veggies to

perfection: Make sure your oven is preheated to a toasty 375°F, and don’t forget to preheat your cooking tray too. That sizzling hot start is the secret to achieving a beautiful sear

when your veggies hit the pan–pure roasted goodness every time! Q: Tell us about your products and books? A: I currently have two cookbooks out

“The Quick Six Fix” and “Cook it, Spill it, Throw it, The not so REAL HOUSEWIVES parody cookbook. I also have a new line of seasonings, called LOVELY SEASONING, all available on Amazon. Just search “Chef Stu Seasoning.” Q: How did your book, Cook It, Spill It, Throw It come to be? A: The idea for the book “Cook It, Spill It,

Throw It” dawned on me during an evening spent lounging on my couch, engrossed in a Housewives episode. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in my head–why hasn’t anyone ever crafted a cookbook that playfully teases the Housewives while offering their fans delectable recipes to savor? Q: Favorite meal to cook from your cookbook? A: Favorite meal from the cookbook would

be “Scary Island Skirt steak with a Jill Zarinade.”

Q: If you could invite 3 housewives to dinner, who would it be? A: I would like to invite Jill Zarin, LeeAnne

Locken and Margaret Josephs to dinner for an evening filled with laughter, great conversations, and exceptional food.

Q: What housewife would you like to stir the pot with, in the kitchen? A: I’ve got this playful idea of teaming up

with Jill Zarin in the kitchen–she’s a riot and shares my love for cooking! I can just imagine the laughter and the delicious chaos we’d cook up together. Plus, I’ve got a sneaky suspicion she’d drop some awesome cooking tips my way!

Q: What housewife would you like to have a food fight with? A: Emily Simpson from the OC Housewives!

I’ve seen her embrace the mess on the show, and I think she’d be an absolute blast to join in with. She’s definitely got that fun and adventurous spirit, and I’m all in for some lighthearted culinary chaos alongside her! Q: Do you enjoy a table flip or a drink throwing tantrum? A: I prefer a fun and lighthearted table

flip to release tension, rather than a drinkthrowing tantrum.

Q: Last Bravoleberty you texted? A: My last text was to Jill Zarin, discussing

doing a cooking demo together at her home in Boca. Q: Life with Jeff Lewis in 3 words? A: Entertaining, unpredictable, and lively.

“That’s “T hat’s just lovely lov ely”” Q: The Hamptons to you in 3 words? A: Serene, upscale, and coastal. Q: What do you love about the Hamptons? A: I love the Hamptons for its stunning

beaches, fresh seafood, and vibrant culinary scene.

Q: Go to Summer style. A: I love to rock a white jean with stylish linen

shirts. I love the Hamptons/New England look! Q: Tell us about Milo? A: Milo is my lovable and mischievous West

Highland Terrier who sometimes enjoys tastetesting new recipes. He keeps me on my toes. Q: What superpower would you like to have? A: I would love to have the ability to instantly

know the perfect flavor combinations for any dish, making my culinary creations even more exceptional. Q: Something we’d be surprised to know about you. A: I was a semi-pro tennis player while

growing up in Ireland.

Q: Life motto? A: “If something doesn’t move you forward in

life then leave it behind.”

Q: Life lesson learned? A: Embrace each “NO/REJECTION” as a

valuable lesson, a stepping-stone to growth. Learn from it, let it fuel your improvement, and remember, dwelling on the past won’t pave the way forward. Q: What’s your tagline? A: “That’s just lovely” I seem to say this a lot

after I taste good food.

Q: What’s next for Chef Stu? A: I’ve had the thrill of shooting a couple

of shows and even a fresh infomercial. My passion for creating content keeps me constantly pitching new show ideas. Guess what? I’ve got big plans to broaden my horizons–envisioning an expansion of my seasoning line and product offerings. Oh, and stay tuned, because there might just be a new book cooking up in the near future! Q: How can my readers find, follow, and keep up with all things Chef Stu? A: For all the latest updates on my culinary

escapades, you can catch me on social mediaInstagram, Facebook, and X-formally Twitter @CHEFSTUARTOKEEFFE. And of course, don’t miss out on the tasty action over at my website TASTYBITES.NET, where you’ll find fresh recipes. Location: 75 Main restaurant, Southampton, NY. Courtesy of Zach Erdem

E

l Turco restaurant is the Hampton’s newest ‘must dine’ experience. Overseen by visionary real estate guru, Cagri Kanver, El Turco is the new ‘Hot’ spot in the Hamps! An off shoot of El Turco Miami, this Hamptons eatery boasts fresh locally and ethnically sourced ingredients, authentic recipes (as in what Mom would make), and dishes that set off the senses and please the palate. The atmosphere is fresh, fun, open, and inviting. The staff is on-point, courteous, and knowledgeable, but it’s the food that draws you in. We started off with the Meze sampler. A

tasty platter filled with humus, cacik, baba ganoush, kisir, muhammara and warm pita bread. Next up the El Turco salad. Made with feta cheese, freshly cut steak tomatoes, Persian cucumber, red onion,

Inspired by his own commitment to projects, he is constantly developing fresh concepts and innovative ideas in the market. With his remarkable and eclectic background, and adapting to and impacting the global landscape, he is an industry leader. The perfect example is his newest development in East Hampton, New York – the wildly popular El Turco. The Miami-transplanted restaurant soared this summer with rave reviews and was applauded for accomplishing the task of turning an old nightclub spot into a hot new restaurant in less than a month. The entrepreneur’s projects, combined, reached a magnitude in excess of $100 million of project costs. More importantly, they have provided major returns to the investors which he brought into the deals. In that project Kanver brought in millions of dollars of equity and sourced a significant amount of the construction materials from Turkey.

green peppers, beetroot, and extra virgin olive oil. The combination of amazing flavors and textures makes this one of the best salads I’ve ever had. We also sampled the burrata salad. It was simply dressed with oil and vinegar and topped off with a ball of soft, succulent, and milky burrata cheese. The delicate interaction between the salad’s dressing and the milky burrata made for a delicious experience. The main meal consisted of fish and kebabs. We ordered Branzino which was prepared perfectly with its delicious sauce of capers and lemon. A must have for you fish

aficionados. Accompanying this were delectable orders of the El Turco Kebab and Antep style chicken shish kebab. Both seasoned perfectly and accompanied with yogurt sauce. Both were succulent, tender, and very tasty. As dinner came to an end, we found just enough room for a side or two of dessert. The baklava with its flakey phyllo sheets drizzled with honey and nuts along with the silky-smooth Halvah are must haves. THE ACQUIRED SAVANT By Christopher Marvin

The end of the world seemed like the perfect place to earn my new ability. Now that it’s too late, I think this platform might be too high to jump from. My toes have left the abandoned radar tower off Montauk Point and I’m still stretching toward the clouds

past the bluffs. Gravity hasn’t quite taken ahold yet. I originally came out here to take my swan dive off the lighthouse but realized that wouldn’t produce any extraordinary abilities, just a mess on the pavement. I’m still thankful to the lady at the gift shop who chased me off the railing saying she’d call the cops.

Physical attraction seems to be the primary driving force in your connection. Which is totally cool as long as you’re honest about it. Some people enjoy a casual thing too, you just have to be honest about what you’re looking for. Make sure you’re on the same page because you don’t want to hurt someone or lead them on, especially when it’s totally avoidable. Lust is primarily driven by physical desire and lacks the depth of emotional connection found in love. 10 to 14 points: It indicates a balance between physical and emotional connections, possibly leaning more towards love. There is potential for

a deeper relationship. You may not be ready to share everything or lean into serious intimacy yet, but you wouldn’t rule out the possibility. Physical attraction is an essential aspect of both love and lust, love involves a deeper level of intimacy, lust gives you the chance to opt out. You’re open to both, either, neither, but you are not the kind of person who is motivated by sex alone. Even when it’s just a casual thing, you need something more than just a great ass to get you interested. 15 to 18 points: It suggests a stronger inclination towards love. Emotional connection, long-term commitment, and shared goals play significant roles in your connection. Usually if it’s going there, it’s because you’re getting those same signals back. Sometimes you go into something casual and then life just surprises you that way. Love often involves a selfless concern for your partner’s well-being and happiness. You get that. It is about giving and supporting each other through the ups and downs of life. You’ve been there before, so you know the roads that lead there and you’re ready to be that person for someone else.

R

elationships can involve a mix of love and lust, and they may evolve and change over time. It’s essential to communicate openly with your partner, understand your own emotions and motivations, and reflect on the overall dynamics and qualities of your relationship to gain clarity on whether it is driven by love, lust, or a combination of both.
