memberSPOTLIGHT Butch & Monica Hunyadi

O

ne year ago, Hampton Hall welcomed Butch and Monica Hunyadi to the community. From where? You guessed it, Ohio! Over the past 30 years, Butch and Monica have traveled to the Lowcountry for countless vacations. Travel sports and collegiate competitions took them from coast to coast. Even after traveling around the country, they always knew Hilton Head was the place they wanted to call home. After talking with residents and making countless spreadsheets, they made the decision to move to Hampton Hall. The Hunyadi’s were planning on staying in the community for three to five years before deciding if it was the right fit. However, it only took eight months to realize they were home. They have sold their first home and are now building in Hampton Hall on Wicklow Drive. Before moving south, Monica was a human resources and operations professional working in both the private and public sectors. Monica’s experience began in the Japanese auto glass industry followed by director level positions with the Ohio Consumer’s Counsel and the Supreme Court

of Ohio. Butch devoted thirty-five years to the criminal justice field. He began his career in law enforcement as a State Police Officer in New Mexico. He moved back to Ohio where he worked at the state level in law enforcement training, community corrections and prisons. Both Butch and Monica hold graduate degrees, served as adjunct professors, and hosted professionals from all over the world for cultural exchanges. Monica and Butch have known each other since high school in Findlay, Ohio. They participated in various sports and still recall competing in track and field together for their high school. After initially going their separate ways for college, Monica joined Butch at the University of Toledo where he had a successful collegiate

memberSPOTLIGHT football career. They still stay in touch with their friends from UT and enjoy returning for MAC championship team get-togethers.

“ Pete’s Grill is a favorite for lunch, and they enjoy having a nice dinner at the community clubhouse.” In Dublin, Ohio, Monica and Butch raised two daughters who both won state championships in high school soccer and went on to participate in collegiate sports. Their daughter Brittany attended the College of Charleston and their daughter Kelsey attended the University of Kentucky. After working as a college soccer coach, Kelsey took a position with a division of Johnson and Johnson in Miami, Florida. Brittany and her husband, Hayden, have three children and live in Bluffton after relocating here from Oklahoma City. Butch and Monica find themselves very busy outside of Hampton Hall with their grandchildren. Their grandparent duties include carpool, pre-school, swim lessons, boat days, dance…we all know the list! Since their relocation to Bluffton in the past year, the Hunyadi’s were thrilled to celebrate their first Christmas and Easter in the Lowcountry.

“ Whether the setting is the golf course, dining facilities or pickleball court, everyone is courteous, respectful and helpful; qualities that Butch and Monica look for and appreciate.” When the Hunyadi’s have time to themselves in Hampton Hall, Butch spends time with his newfound buddies on the golf course at least two to three days a week. He also participates in pickleball, workouts, and lap swimming at the indoor pool. Monica enjoys a leisurely bike ride around the community combined with an early morning walk with Butch…when he doesn’t have an early morning tee time! Pete’s Grill is a favorite for lunch, and they enjoy having a nice dinner at the community clubhouse. Their favorite aspect about Hampton Hall is sharing this great place with their friends. Whether the setting is the golf course, dining facilities or pickleball court, everyone is courteous, respectful and helpful; qualities that Butch and Monica look for and appreciate. hamptonhallclubsc.com | 7

golfCORNER Playing a Quick Nine? by Brent Carlson, PGA Head Golf Professional

O

ne of my favorite questions to get asked is, “Do you want to play a quick nine?” This probably stems from my youth, because growing up I played a nine-hole course. The course itself is nothing special, but for me it is hallowed ground. Even though the course will not appear on any top 100 lists, I still hold that golf course in extremely high regard. Whenever someone asked to play a “quick nine” the answer was always “YES.” When I get the opportunity to play today, I am happy to play 9 or 18 holes depending on the time window– boy do I like big windows. My roots give me a soft spot for golfers who enjoy our golf amenities for a “quick nine.” If you have been looking to get out but are not sure how much time you have for golf, come join us for a quick nine. We have many members that enjoy nine holes on a regular basis, and we also host a Nine Hole Championship each year during the Club Championships. If you are limited for time, but still want to get some golf in, I would encourage you to grab a friend and ask them, “Do you want to play a quick nine?”

The Golf Pro’s Book Report

O

n a recent vacation, I had the chance to dip my feet in a lake and read a book, given to me by a thoughtful member. The book was about golf in Scotland by Tom Coyne – it was a kind gesture and fun to read. It got me wondering, “What golf books do you enjoy?” I read books primarily for entertainment (think Bill Murray’s Cinderella Story), but I do like a few books meant to help golfers or to give them insight into our great game.

fit&HEALTHY Self-Care: Creating a New Normal! By Christina DeVoe, Sports, Recreation & Activities Director

O

ver the past few decades, there have been many events which have created “new normals” in our daily lives. We’ve witnessed tragedies, which have had great impacts on everything from national and international travel to simple gatherings with family members. This fall let’s challenge ourselves to create a NEW NORMAL of self-care for ourselves as we head into the holiday season.

SELF-CARE TIP 3: Nutrition Goals

• We can improve our gut health, hearts, muscles, and minds all through good nutrition. • Certain foods can even help with memory loss, inflammation, and energy loss. • We recommend trying foods such as fatty fish, blueberries, nuts, green leafy veggies, and brassicas. SELF- CARE TIP 1: Get Outside

• Richard Louv coined the term Nature Deficit Disorder. Evidence suggests we suffer from “Vitamin N disorders. Spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, ADHD, depression, and more. • By getting sunlight, we are getting Vitamin D which helps with Immunity. Sunlight energizes our T-cells which help us to fight infection. SELF-CARE TIP 2: Sleep

• It is important to have a nightly routine. By staying consistent, your body becomes aware of when it is time to shut down. • Calm your body and mind however you need to! This can be done through baths, white noise machines, meditation, limiting blue screens, or whatever else works for you. • Make sure you sleep with little distractions. Create an environment you can truly relax in. 16 | Fall 2021

• You can also improve nutrition by making a menu for the week. This will help you plan better and avoid impulse eating. SELF-CARE TIP 4: Fitness

• Exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety. • It is important to move for at least 30 minutes daily. This does not have to be intense and can just be a leisurely stroll or trying a fitness class. • Physical inactivity was labeled a global pandemic in 2012 and accounts for 11% of US healthcare expenditures. • Walking regularly lowers all-cause mortality in older adults. SELF-CARE TIP 5: Schedule it!

• Keep a schedule to help you stay on top of things. Make sure to reserve some time for yourself. This will help ensure you are engaged when spending time with others. Remember, it is okay to say no! • You can start by scheduling five minutes with yourself.

fit&HEALTHY SELF-CARE TIP 6: Volunteer

• Giving back to your community can improve your mental health as well. Volunteering shows we can be useful, helpful, and provide happiness to others. The smile you see on someone else’s face, can turn your day around. SELF-CARE TIP 7: Posture

• By having good posture, you are not only helping your muscles, but displaying confidence.

SELF-CARE TIP 8:

Detox from Technology • Limit your screen time. • Put your phone on “Airplane Mode” occasionally so you don’t receive a high volume of texts and calls. SELF-CARE TIP 9: Ditch the Scale

• Focus on a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you are getting the proper nutrients and feeling good. A low number on the scale or a lowcalorie intake does not necessarily mean a healthy lifestyle. SELF-CARE TIP 10:

Schedule a Massage • Hampton Hall has an onsite spa. You can contact Tara Gabriel to set up your appointment now and relax your muscles and mind.

Bocce—That’s How We Roll! by Christina DeVoe, Sports, Recreation & Activities Director

Personal Training

• Do you find machine and free weights boring and repetitive? • Do you struggle to find the time to exercise? • Do you see your waistline increasing? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then we have the solution for you! You can have FUN while you are able to achieve serious results, increase confidence, lose weight, and feel great!

B

occe, also known as Italian lawn bowling, is a Hampton Hall member favorite and one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. We currently have two bocce ball courts here at Hampton Hall and multiple teams playing weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly. It may surprise you to know that there are 130 players here in the community playing on a team! Over the past year, we have had several informational events led by the Bocce Club group, giving new players the opportunity to learn to play and join a team. One of the best things about bocce is that it is a very social game. You don’t have to be good to have a great time! While pickleball and tennis require some focus and athleticism, bocce allows for conversation. Many players enjoy a glass of wine or beer while taking their turn on the court, as only one hand is required to throw the ball.

Rules of Play: Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called a pallina. There are four balls per team, and they are made of a different color or pattern to distinguish the balls of one team from those of the other team. Traditionally, the game is played with two teams, with each team having one, two, or four players. Go to usbf.us for more information on bocce in the US. Bocce sets are available for member use. You can sign out the bocce sets from the Fitness Center. Please reserve your court on the website. You can also join a team. Contact Sig Borkoski at sborkoski8@gmail.com for more information.

HAMPTON HALL CHARITABLE FUND Hampton Hall Charitable Fund Members Amy Lyons, Lucille French, Lori Desing and Maureen Dvorak preparing to deliver the school supply donations. The principals of both schools sent their heartfelt thanks and noted that both students and teachers need support now more than ever as they continue to struggle with the financial effects of the pandemic. Looking ahead, the HHCF has planned a great lineup of activities. We’re hosting our first-ever Tiffany Style Luncheon and Fashion Show on Wednesday, September 22. The event gives you a chance to put on your prettiest clothes, enjoy a fabulous meal and be treated to a runway show featuring clothing from one of the most fashionable local boutiques. It also will include lots of special surprises, including lovely giveaways and raffles for filled-to-the-brim gift baskets. Look for details on page 20 and register early as seating is limited.

We knew we could count on you!

F

or the fourth year in a row, Hampton Hall friends and neighbors stepped up to help local students get a head start on the school year. The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund’s (HHCF) School Supplies Drive brought in van loads of pencils, pens, binders, backpacks, crayons, markers and so much more that were donated to Red Cedar Elementary School and Bluffton Middle School just as classes started. 20 | Fall 2021

On October 13, we’re happy to be bringing back our Mahjong Marathon. It’s been one of our most successful events, attracting players from inside and outside Hampton Hall and offering a full day of fun and friendship. More information will available in the next few weeks.

And on December 5, get ready to tour some of the most beautiful Hampton Hall homes decked out for Christmas. The first Holiday Home Tour in 2019 showcased decorating themes ranging from coastal to contemporary, and of course included lots of sparkle and shine. We’re hoping this year’s event will be even merrier. Proceeds from all of these events go to our annual Grants Program, which provides funding to a variety of local non-profit agencies that work to meet the needs of underprivileged children and families in our area.
