Spring is right around the corner, and I am heading to the

Club Management Association of America (CMAA) National Conference. It is an extremely informational week of meetings and seminars with various educational and networking opportunities. I look forward to bringing back many new ideas and best practices from industry professionals and other clubs. Additionally, I am honored to be recognized for obtaining my CCE designation as a General Manager/Chief Operating Officer from the Club Management Association of America at conference.

In many professions, a successful career is marked by an appropriate degree of professional development, verified by a credible certification program, and recognized by both the public and one’s peers. Since 1965, the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation has been the “hallmark of professionalism” in club management and is the cornerstone of CMAA’s certification program. The certification programs available from the CMAA association are a valuable and widely-respected mark of a manager’s commitment to professional development and the club industry.

CMAA’s certification program is a dynamic, continuing process. It includes two levels of further recognition: CMAA’s prestigious Honor Society and the Certified Chief Executive (CCE) designation. The Certified Chief Executive (CCE) designation was developed to recognize those managers who have shown the ability to successfully serve as the most senior executive in a club. It is my honor to be receiving both the CCE and Honor Society designations at conference this year, while representing Hampton Hall Club and its path forward.

Welcome Wendy Wagner

W

HOA Director

endy Wagner has joined the Hampton Hall team as Homeowner’s Association (HOA) Director. With more than 20 years of experience in the building industry, she brings extensive knowledge and operations acumen that will serve our community well. Wendy oversees all day-to-day operations of the HOA, including the Architectural Review Board (ARB).

The HOA Director is responsible for management and enforcement of covenant compliance, the Dwelling Live system, RFID tags, and maintaining the overall beauty and maintenance of all common ground areas, including the Cottages.

Wendy also chairs the Community Services Advisory Group.

Most recently, Wendy served with the ARB at neighboring Berkeley Hall Club for the past 13 years.

She is well-versed in covenants compliance, project management and ARB operations. Over the years, Wendy has established professional relationships with a number of builders and vendors that currently build in Hampton Hall.

Originally from North Carolina, Wendy is now happy to call the Lowcountry home. She has lived in the Bluffton area since 2007 with her husband and their two children.

Hampton Hall Club’s Ambassador Program is in place to welcome and engage new members.

We are encouraging enthusiastic members who are positive advocates for Hampton Hall Club, both inside and outside of the community, to serve as Ambassadors.

Ambassadors are called upon to greet and engage new Social and Golf members for the first 3- 6 months of their membership through social and/or sporting activities. Ambassadors may also assist in acquainting prospective members with the Club.

Being an Ambassador is all about having fun, embracing new or prospective members, and helping them experience what you enjoy as a member of Hampton Hall Club.

memberSPOTLIGHT Dennis & Jean Arnold

D

ennis and Jean Arnold have been active members of Hampton Hall since June 2014, having built their house on Farnsleigh Avenue in 2012.

Dennis grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York (approx. 75 miles north of NYC) and graduated from Wagner College on Staten Island. He retired as a financial advisor from Merrill Lynch in 2014. He has two daughters and grandchildren living in the Wilmington, NC area.

Jean grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island, NY. She graduated from Akron University undergraduate, and received her master’s degree from St. Rose College, Albany, NY. Jean has children in Oldsmar, FL (2 grandkids), San Rafael, CA (2 grandkids) and San Diego, CA (3 grandkids). Before retiring, Jean was a special education teacher in the Arlington School District in New York.

Dennis and Jean met in 2003 and married at Jean’s family beach house on the North Fork of Long Island in 2005. They lived in Millbrook, NY and Pleasant Valley, NY prior to moving to Hampton Hall.

Nearly 10 years later, the Arnolds couldn’t be happier with their decision to make Hampton Hall their home.

memberSPOTLIGHT In 2007, Hampton Hall residents, and longtime friends of Dennis, Chip and Dee Rawson, attended Dennis’ daughter’s wedding on Seabrook Island (next to Kiawah).

While at the wedding, the Rawsons spoke enthusiastically of a new home they were building in a great community in South Carolina called Hampton Hall.

The Arnolds are especially grateful for the delicious meals prepared by the culinary team and the first class experience provided by the Club’s Golf Professional and staff.

In 2011, as Dennis and Jean contemplated retirement, they searched out communities along the North Carolina shoreline and in the Tampa area. Following through on the Rawson’s offer to see the Bluffton area, the Arnolds met with the Rawson’s realtor, Tim Peirce.

In June 2012, Tim reached out to say that a builder the Arnolds liked was building a house in Hampton Hall in the style that they preferred, with a floor plan similar to their home in NY. Despite Jean’s concerns, Dennis thought the house was perfect for them. They ended up purchasing the house…sight unseen.

Nearly 10 years later, the Arnolds couldn’t be happier with their decision to make Hampton Hall their home. They cite the many fantastic people they have met and the great friendships they have developed over the years. Both avid golfers, they are also regulars at the fitness center. They are looking forward to again getting involved in bocce and taking up pickleball. Dennis and Jean also enjoy traveling, gardening, and working on household projects.

Strong proponents of giving back to their community, the Arnolds have served on many community committees.

Dennis served on the Men’s Golf Society (MGS) board,

and on the Membership, Marketing & Communication Committee from its inception in 2018. He has volunteered for several non-profits in the area as well. He currently serves on the Greens Advisory Group and the Golf Course Renovation Ad Hoc Committee.

Jean has served on the Ladies Golf Society (LGS) board and chaired the 9-hole ladies “Fun Group” and the 9-hole Golf Exchange group. She also served on the Racket Sports Advisory Committee. She is currently serving on the Recreation Facilities Ad Hoc Committee, Fitness & Aquatics Advisory Group, and the Master Plan Ad Hoc Committee.

When not in Bluffton or at Jean’s family beach house, the Arnolds often travel to various parts of the country to see their children and grandkids. They have also traveled extensively to the western part of the country and Canada.

They are working on whittling down their travel bucket list, including a trip to Alaska this summer.

The Arnolds would like to thank past and present members of the Board of Directors, the GM, management team and staff at Hampton Hall. They have seen multiple improvements and enhancements that Hampton Hall has incorporated for the benefit of all residents. The Arnolds are especially grateful for the delicious meals prepared by the culinary team and the first class experience provided by the Club’s Golf Professional and staff.

The Arnolds look forward to many more fun-filled years at Hampton Hall and to all the pending improvements in the amenities that are under consideration.

golfCORNER “The Nicest Man I Ever Met.”

O

ur membership is so wonderful. You were so kind to me and my family as my dad passed away over the holidays. We were overwhelmed by the number of cards, calls, thoughts and prayers during some our most difficult days ever. THANK YOU! My dad was a musician who loved golf. I’m a golfer that loves music. Isn’t there an expression about apples and how far they fall from trees? As most of you know, my dad had one of the largest golf appetites of anyone that plays our awesome game. A golf course was paradise for him. He usually played at least once a day and got more enjoyment from the game than most.

I have a habit of calling my parents on the way home from work. There were three questions that he asked me the most when we would catch up on those calls.

Did you get to play today?

I think days were rated for him in terms of if he got to play golf. If he got to play, it was a good day; If not, he was hoping for tomorrow. It’s definitely a good day each time I get to play. He could tell how busy we are at the club and how hard we try to provide members with the best golfing experience, but he could not resist asking if I had a chance to play each time he called.

Who did you get to play with?

Some of my dad’s best friends have golfing ties. Golf can bring together strangers who meet, play, and begin long standing friendships. I hope you feel that way about our club and that you meet folks who become longstanding friends.

My dad would always start his golfing stories with who he played with and what made them fun to be with.

Did you enjoy it?

People enjoy golf for different reasons. What about this game brings you the most enjoyment? My dad was a good golfer — single digit as long as I knew him — but his greatest enjoyment of the game had little to do with a scorecard. He greatly enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. The last round of golf I played with my dad was during Thanksgiving with two of his grandchildren – pure bliss.

As you get to play your next round, like me, I hope you take a moment or two to really enjoy it. Golf can be difficult and lead to frustration, but I hope we can keep the proper perspective on our games as we try the best we can.

I hope you are enjoying our wonderful group of fellow golfers we have at the club.

Did you enjoy it?

I hope so! I hope you take the time to see what a glorious place this is and that your footprints are left on the fairways of what many would consider to be paradise.

My dad was the nicest man I ever met. I heard this numerous times following his passing from family and friends. A legacy of kindness…Wow! Thank you again for your kindness in this time!

I

n the golf maintenance industry, we use a term known as “sustainable golf course”. A sustainable golf course requires a low input of water, fertilizer, chemicals, and mowing. This benefits the environment and the Club.

promotes wildlife. There are 58 blue bird houses and 28 duck boxes located around the golf course. The Club also grows a butterfly garden and flowers to promote pollinators.

The Golf Club has also purchased equipment that will reduce costs and benefit the environment.

Our newest purchase of a woodchipper uses low horsepower, increases productivity, uses less fuel, is more durable, results in less debris, and ultimately saves money. We can now chip 98% of our branches into the wood line, which reduces input and helps environments that are far outside the confines of Hampton Hall.

We are continuing to work hard to keep our golf course sustainable to better the environment.

There are many ways to ensure a low input sustainable golf course. Some clubs spread their food waste on their fairways as fertilizer and some courses are using effluent water to irrigate their golf courses.

Hilton Head was one of the first areas on the east coast to use effluent water to irrigate a golf course.

Courses also use diverse types of grasses to be more environmentally friendly. These include tall or bunch type grasses that are planted in the rough. Courses also switch to low input grass such as paspalum.

We try to ensure Hampton Hall is a low input and sustainable golf course. This is done by keeping our rough at four to five inches, reducing the amount of chemical and fertilizer used, using cordgrass as mulch, planting bunch grasses by the lake banks, and using equipment that reduces fuel. Hampton Hall is also a certified Audubon Sanctuary Golf Course that

laying tennis, having fun, meeting new people? Sign me up! As the Hampton Hall Head Tennis Professional, I set out to create a monthly social play date for 2.5/3.0 level ladies that gets back to the simple roots of tennis—fun!

I have been in the tennis industry for the last 20 years in many different environments, and whether it is a club, a vacation resort, or public tennis facility, one thing is always consistent. Not everyone wants to play to win and be competitive. Many players love the simple camaraderie of hitting some tennis balls, meeting new people, and relaxing afterwards with a nice glass of wine.

Whether your child is just beginning their tennis career, or an advanced player looking to continue improvement, Hampton Hall Club Junior Tennis offers your child a fun and friendly environment! Each month we have a different host site and the home Tennis Professional runs a round robin, in which everyone gets a chance to play with or against everyone else from a different club. It’s a great way to meet like-minded tennis players in the Hampton Hall and Bluffton community and not worry about letting your teammates down, as score is not kept.

courtSIDE Bocce Update

By Hampton Hall’s Bocce Lead Member Sig Borkoski Bocce’s popularity continues to grow among the membership at Hampton Hall! Back in 2007 we started with about 20 active participants. After organizing and facilitating “Beginners Bocce” sessions over the past couple of years, we now have over 180 regular players among thirteen teams. Each team has a captain to coordinate of times to play, procurement of bocce balls, social activities to include dinners, and so forth with their team members.

We are planning our next Beginners Bocce session for April 2022 and we look forward to welcoming even more members to play. Details will be published on the club website and announced in the Tuesday Highlights eblast.

Bocce is a fun and easy sport that any age can enjoy.

A small white ball called a pallina is rolled. Players then compete to roll their ball closest to the pallina without touching it. The closest ball wins! Bocce is simple, sociable, and even leaves one hand free for a drink.

pring is my favorite season for creating new and fun cocktails. If you are like me, you may be pretending you are a fantastic gardener and are planting your spring fruits, vegetables, and herbs. While I may not have a respectable green thumb, I take my wonderful produce and turn it into a fun afternoon sipper by the pool. The recipe I am sharing with you today is simple, tasty, and is perfect for a warm relaxing afternoon.

Introducing the “Strawberry Basil Lemonade Cooler”!

Drink what makes you happy with friends who make you laugh.

STRAWBERRY BASIL LEMONADE INGREDIENTS INGREDIENTS

METHOD:

3-4 Strawberries

Muddle the strawberries and basil in a cocktail shaker thoroughly.

3-4 Fresh Basil Leaves 0.5 oz. Simple Syrup 2 oz. White Rum (I really enjoy Daufuskie Island Silver Rum for this recipe)

Lemonade Club Soda

Add a scoop of ice, white rum, desired amount of lemonade (depends on the size of the glass you are pouring into), and 0.5 oz. of simple syrup (If the lemonade is already sweet, you may not need the simple syrup).

Shake the cocktail shaker for about 15 -20 seconds.

Strain into a glass already filled with ice.

Top with club soda.

Garnish with a lemon wheel, strawberry slice, and/or basil. Enjoy!

ichele DiCarlo has joined the Hampton Hall Club Team as the new Sports, Recreation & Activities Director.

Michele studied Sports, Fitness and Leisure with a concentration in Athletic Training at Salem State College and was part of their women’s soccer team.

After moving to Bluffton from Massachusetts, Michele managed operations, taught fitness classes, and was a personal trainer at Benchmark Fitness Center for 14 years. She is certified as a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and sports nutritionist. She was most recently the Fitness Director at Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club.

Michele loves spending her free time traveling, taking photos, working out and spending time with her family.

As the Sports, Recreation & Activities Director, Michele will be responsible for fitness, aquatics, activities, and programming. This will include class instruction oversight and development, directing personal trainers, managing the indoor and outdoor pool operations, and coordinating bocce and recreational activities. She will also chair the Fitness and Aquatics Advisory Group.

D

o you feel like your food is just sitting in your stomach for hours after you eat? Or is the opposite happening, and you are running to the bathroom before you have even finished your meal? You are not alone, and there are things you can do improve the situation. Here are ten steps to take now to get things moving properly through your gut:

1. Food Combining – When foods are combined

properly, they do not sit in your stomach and rot. That rotting food feeds the bad bacteria and yeast that everyone has residing in their digestive tract. To combine food, you eat protein with vegetables or grains with vegetables, never proteins & grains together. Also, fruits should be eaten alone on an empty stomach.

2. Fermented Foods – These are naturally fermented

foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, etc., that, when eaten, will feed the good bacteria in your gut and balance your inner ecology.

3. Enzymes and Probiotics – I suggest that everyone

take digestive enzymes and probiotics to help with the digestion of their food and build up their immunity.

4. Water – We all know we need to drink plenty of water.

A little known Ayurvedic trick is to drink a glass of water 15 minutes before your meal. This will get your digestive juices flowing and your food will get digested better.

5. 80/20 – This rule is to eat until you are 80% full.

That leaves 20% of the room left in your stomach for your digestion to work. No one likes that uncomfortable full feeling and your tummy will thank you if you stop just before you are full.

6. Eat Loads of Fiber – Your body needs fiber to carry

out toxins, excess hormones, and junk. Eating lots of water-soluble fiber, found in veggies, will ensure that you get plenty of fiber. Just don’t forget step #4! Drink lots of water, too, so that you don’t end up with bulky stool.

7. Short Fasting Period – Don’t worry, I am not

suggesting that you don’t eat for a day. What I am suggesting is that you take some time between meals.

Give your system about 3 or 4 hours to let the food get assimilated. When your gut is constantly bombarded by food all day long, it gets confused and doesn’t work properly. Give it some time to work on that last meal before you head to the kitchen for a snack.

8. Cut Sugar and White Carbohydrates – These

foods will feed the bad guys in your gut. Avoid them for less gas and bloating – and you don’t want the insulin spike that comes with them either.

9. Gluten – A large percentage of Americans are gluten

intolerant and do not know it. Try going without and see if your digestion works any better.

10. Bone Broth – This is soothing and healing.

Homemade bone broth contains nutrients you need to heal your gut if it is leaky and also provides the minerals you need for strong bones. It’s a win-win, must-consume food!

DETOX PESTO INGREDIENTS 1 cup cilantro ½ cup parsley ½ cup mint ½ cup pumpkin seeds 1 garlic clove 1 lemon, juiced ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and black pepper to taste 18 | Spring 2022

METHOD: Combine the cilantro, parsley, mint, pumpkin seeds, and garlic in a food processor or highspeed blender. Blend until finely chopped. Add the lemon juice and slowly add extra virgin olive oil in a steady drizzle. Blend until the mixture becomes a smooth, light paste. Add enough olive oil to keep it moist and spreadable.

Season with sea salt and black pepper. Cover tightly and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.

This is absolutely amazing as a veggie dip or spread on your favorite wrap.

y reasons for working with a personal trainer were twofold: first I thought it was about time that I work on getting myself in better shape, especially considering my age (78); and second, due to some medical issues, it was important to increase my overall strength. I saw an article in the Bridge introducing several personal trainers working at the Hampton Hall Fitness Center, including Lisa. I signed up on the spot after speaking with her as she totally understood my goals and said she would design a program for me not just relying on the machines in the center, but also using additional exercises as well. I am in my third month now and am extremely satisfied. She is working on the areas I requested and I can see results. The icing on the cake is that Lisa is a delightful individual, she makes it so easy to work with her. I should note that I referred Lisa to a friend and now he and his wife are working with Lisa as well.

Another successful Hampton Hall Holiday Toy Drive!

HAMPTON HALL CHARITABLE Strengthens Its Ability to Help Those in Need The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund (HHCF) would like to sincerely thank our friends and neighbors throughout the community who stepped up to support us in 2021. Last year was our liveliest and most successful year ever when in raising funds and fulfilling our mission of helping children and families in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

W

e collected more school supplies in September and toys in December than we could have imagined.

Our Holiday Home Tour also drew over 120 visitors, who had the opportunity to see seven beautifully decorated homes throughout Hampton Hall.

As a result of our work and your generosity, we were able to provide funding through our annual Grants Program to eight local nonprofit agencies that have a track record of success in offering a host of essential services.

The grants are an important lifeline for these agencies and help them make a difference in the lives of many people in our area.

In writing to thank us, the director of Bluffton-Hilton Head Meals on Wheels noted, “Please know that your grant will be used to acquire meals for ill, disabled and homebound people. Without the kindness and support of individuals and organizations like yours, we would not be able to serve our clients.”

The HHCF is now looking forward to a new year and a new calendar of events, starting with our annual Par 3 Golf Tournament — Tee Off Against Cancer in the Lowcountry in March. This year, we have some surprises in store as we continue to carry out our mission and put the fun in fundraising.
