Season’s Greetings to all Hampton Hall Members, he start of the holiday season is upon us, and I want to express my gratitude to every one of our members.

Thank you for supporting our Club and our staff, especially through your contribution to the Holiday fund.

This has been a rewarding year for our Club. During the past 12 months, Hampton Hall received recognition for being a “Top Ranked Racquet Sports Facility” and having a “Top Ranked Patio” from Club & Resort Business Magazine.

The community was also recognized by Ideal-Living as one of America’s 100 Best Places to Live, and locally Hampton Hall received honors for Best of Bluffton Gated Community and Private Golf Course. Our revenues in the ARB and annual passes exceeded our expectations. Food & Beverage numbers continue to rise from a la carte revenues and members utilizing the dining services. Additionally, the Management Team is working to achieve the designation of “Healthiest Clubs of America” and will complete this quest by the end of the year.

As we prepare for another busy season, I have been reflecting on something that has been paramount to our team and community this year. CULTURE. For Hampton Hall Club, culture is defined as a Community United by Leadership and Teamwork with Unique, Relavant and Engaging member experiences. Hampton Hall is well on its way to living up to this definition.

I would also like to thank the Board, Committee Members, and Advisory Groups for their service during 2021. These individuals have worked diligently on numerous endeavors and opportunities for the Club. These members are volunteers and generously give their time, energy, and heart for the best interests of our great community and its future.

Please pay close attention to our weekly emails, newsletter articles, and monthly calendars, as we have many social events scheduled for everyone in the family.

Some of my favorites are the Lighting of the Tree, the Community Parade and Brunch with Santa.

I sincerely hope you are gifted time with family, friends, and neighbors to give thanks and enjoy time together during this festive season. Please know I am thankful for my continued relationship with you, our member.

e thank you for your help as you graciously reach out to fellow members, making sure they are enjoying their new club.

Your Club’s Ambassadors warmly greet new members and make them feel at home. Their role is essential in the Club’s mission to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and comfortable environment.

While the pandemic has presented some challenges, your Ambassadors have continued efforts to make sure new members are engaged in the community.

memberSPOTLIGHT Tom and Rosanne Millan

T

om and Rosanne Millan have been active members of Hampton Hall for five years, but their lives began in Brooklyn, NY. Tom was born to immigrant parents and Rosanne was born into a traditional Italian-American family. Despite both being born in Brooklyn, they did not meet until almost 20+ years later at a young adult’s Bible study in Staten Island, NY. It was love at first sight for Tom, but it took Rosanne almost a year to have the same revelation!

It only took nine months of dating before they were married in July of 1986. After five years of living in Staten Island and having two children, they moved to a six-acre horse farm in Monmouth County, NJ. There in NJ, Tom and Rosanne raised two wonderful children, Nina and Thomas. On the family farm, they raised sheep, goats, chickens, horses, cows, birds, turtles, dogs, and cats. There always seemed to be an adventure ensuing that kept them busy for the next 25 years.

Tom completed his degree in business management at Saint Peter’s University. Tom pursued a career as an electrician with the Port Authority of NY and NJ, while operating his own electrical contracting business in New Jersey. His life experience exposed him to many work settings and opportunities; two of which involved working at the World Trade Center in Manhattan for both bombings. The Lord

memberSPOTLIGHT worked mightily and protected Tom during these sad, hard times for our country. He was an encouragement to many facing difficult times. Tom worked for 27 years at The Port Authority of NY and NJ. Additionally, Tom has led a Bible study in their home for over 20 years.

“ The Millans consider Hampton Hall a ‘melting-pot of people and collection of amenities that meet their social and recreational needs.’ ” Rosanne completed her master’s degree in reading/ literacy at Wagner College. Her teaching career began in Brooklyn at a Head Start Pre-K Program. She was able to graduate to teaching Kindergarten when the couple relocated to Staten Island. Teaching Kindergarten was her favorite grade, but the Lord had other plans for her in the educational field. She went on to teach reading to every grade through 6th grade. As her children arrived, they made the decision for Rosanne to home-school the children for the next 14 years. During that time, Rosanne had the opportunity to lead the homeschooling support group at their church and aided in the founding of Calvary Christian School (CCS) in Middlesex County, NJ. She successfully built the Pre-K, Kindergarten, and high school Biology programs amongst other positions held at the school. While employed at CCS during the years, she was a supervisor for teacher’s Pre-K through 2nd. Rosanne taught at Brookdale Community College. Today she is an Online Assistant Professor of Teacher Education for Liberty University and a Clinical Supervisor of Student Teachers for Western Governors University.

Tom and Rosanne’s daughter, Nina, now lives in NJ and works for JP Morgan as a VP Senior Recruiter, while their son, Thomas, resides in Charlotte, NC. He is employed by Duke Energy as a Senior Software Architect.

The Millans vacationed every year to enjoy the beaches of Hilton Head Island. After 17 years of visiting the area, Tom decided to retire. The Millans looked at neighborhoods for three years, but as soon as the realtor drove them into Hampton Hall they were captivated by the beauty of the community. They sold their NJ house on December 30, 2015 and came to Bluffton on January 1, 2016. Their lot was purchased on January 4, 2016 and they began the building process immediately.

In Hampton Hall, you will find Tom and Rosanne walking and biking together. Additionally, Tom swims at the indoor pool, while Rosanne does a workout in the gym.

As a couple, they enjoy bocce, playing games, swimming,

The Millan’s love dining at the Club for monthly special events. Tom and Rosanne also attend local festivals, explore the Lowcountry, and travel. The Concourse de Elegance is their favorite car show to attend.

The Millans have been Hampton Hall Ambassadors for four years, and they consider the community a “melting-pot of people and collection of amenities that meet their social and recreational needs.”

beverageCORNER Changing of the Seasons

Q

uite often, we can be creatures of habit. I have my go to beverages that I enjoy year-round. There is no seasonality for me to enjoy a pale ale, pair a nice cabernet with a steak, or have a classic martini with some hors d’oeuvres with my friends. In the same breath, we can be creatures of habit to change those beverages of choice by what season it is. There is something about a nice brown ale and bowl of chili while I am watching some football in the fall or relaxing by the pool with a refreshing gin and tonic in the summer. For this winter season I know myself well enough to make sure I go to the store and stock up on all the ingredients that make my favorite winter old fashioned. Here I will share with you how I enjoy my bourbon in the winter. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I tend to stick with the same bourbons for my old fashioned.

Generally, I lean right in the middle price point of selection of bourbon. If I am spending some high dollar, I generally drink it neat or with 1 small ice cube. I usually like Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, Jefferson’s Reserve, or Bulleit (I like the rye whiskey for this recipe as well).

I primarily use Luxardo Cherries for this drink. I strain all of the syrup out of the jar and leave the cherries in. Save the syrup as that comes in handy later. I fill the cherry jar with a strong rye whiskey and let it soak for about a week before I use them. This adds another flavor complexity to the cherry for the cocktail.

ALEX’S WINTER OLD FASHIONED INGREDIENTS

METHOD:

Build in a rocks glass and do not muddle ingredients.

Stir this cocktail gently for about 20 circulations

Place 1 large ice cube or sphere in the rocks glass Add 2oz. bourbon of choice 1 dash Angostura Bitters 1 dash Angostura Orange Bitters 1/4 oz. Simple Syrup ¼ oz. Luxardo Cherry Syrup

Peel an orange for a large twist, hold the flame of 1 lit match over the cocktail and pinch the orange twist to that the citrus oil squirts over the fire and into the cocktail. This is called ‘flaming’ and will produce a small flame into the cocktail.

Add the orange twist and 1 bourbon-soaked cherry to your cocktail and stir 4 more times. Now Enjoy!

Moneyball

A

while ago, I saw a baseball movie that I enjoyed tremendously— Moneyball. There were many bits of wisdom in the movie that can be applied to golf.

In golf, you always want to hit your best shot, but by understanding your game’s tendencies and using those to your advantage, you can be successful. When you play, what percentages do you see on the course? Can you see percentages when comparing two types of shots to the green? Will you pick the type of shot that has the highest percentage of positive outcomes?

If you have a natural shot-shape, I encourage you to “play it” while in competition. Understand what has the highest probability of happening and go with that. Play the percentages in stroke play as much as you can. For example, if the pin is tucked in the back left, but you have been playing a fade all day, aim at the pin and watch your ball fade to the right and stop in the middle of the green.

The percentages should favor that result, as opposed to aiming left of the green and hoping it will work back to the flag. Play the shot you know you can hit and have the most confidence in.

Just like in Moneyball, the percentages pay off in the long run.

ome people say, “Why have a clock when you have a phone?” Clocks are a part of the American landscape. Based in Cincinnati, OH, Verdin started building clocks in 1842 and they are the oldest American manufacturer of street clocks in the country. Verdin sells 200 to 300 post clocks a year.

The next time you visit the Golf Clubhouse, take a walk out to the driving range to see the beautiful new Verdin post clock. You can’t miss it! The four-sided, custom state of the art clock is used by golf courses, towns, colleges and small businesses from coast to coast. The clock is not only functional for golfers, but is a great place to take group photos. It is now a part of the Hampton Hall Club experience, and will be the backdrop for creating memories for years to come.

JULIE KRUGER

H

ave you been to the Hampton Hall tennis courts? If yes, then you have probably already met Julie Kruger.

Three years ago, Julie and her husband, Dale, moved to Hampton Hall from Lake Norman, NC. Julie was raised in West Virginia close to Washington, DC. She started playing tennis when she was only eight years old. Julie continued to play through high school and mentored children learning to play tennis. After high school, she didn’t pick up a racket again for 30 years.

When she wasn’t playing tennis, Julie raised two children. She worked in advertising and sales for 17 years. Julie always liked the thought of becoming a yoga instructor, so she began training. Once Julie accepted a job teaching yoga at a tennis club, she could not resist the game! She has now been teaching yoga for the last 7 years in Lake Norman, Bluffton, and Hilton Head.

Julie loves all the new friends she has made playing tennis. She plays with the ladies of Hampton Hall and plays mixed doubles with her husband and another neighborhood couple. Julie loves a match of ladies versus men! While tennis players may think they know Julie, something you may be unaware of is her love for Kid Rock!

WINTER JUNIOR TENNIS SESSIONS Hampton Hall Club Junior Tennis offers a fun environment for children of all skill levels Mini Shots

Ages 5-6 Mondays and Thursdays 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM $48 for one day or $90 for two days

The lesson will focus on the basics, hand eye coordination, balance, movement.

Red Ball

Ages 7-10 Mondays 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM $60

This group for beginners will focus on form, strokes, serves, rules, and rallying.

The focus will be on placement and score keeping.

This group is for intermediate players that can play an opponent with points. The lesson will focus on stroke development, spin, footwork, and strategy.

Bocce is a fun and easy sport that any age can enjoy. A small white ball called a pallina is rolled. Players then compete to roll their ball closest to the pallina without touching it. The closest ball wins! Bocce is simple, sociable, and even leaves one hand free for a drink.

A

s the weather turns chillier, the days get shorter, and cold and flu season approaches, our minds and bodies can find it difficult to adjust. Side effects such as the winter blues, achy joints, dry skin and more can all begin to affect the way we live, work and play. Here are some helpful reminders to ease into winter and thrive!

1. Don’t forget to eat your greens!

A healthy diet with lots of vegetables will help you get all of the nutrients your body needs. Leafy green vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, reducing the risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and mental decline.

2. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated will help you maximize your physical performance, affect energy levels, and brain function.

Drinking water also helps you stay moisturized! If your skin and lips are chapped, you may not drink enough water!

3. Take Vitamins and Supplements

Vitamins and supplements can help you cover nutritional bases that you may be missing in your diet. They can help support your immune system, boost your cardiovascular health, improve your eyesight, and promote healthy aging.

4. Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly is always beneficial, but even more so in the winter months. Exercising raises your body temperature, which heats you up naturally and has a soothing effect on your body. (Think of it like a nice relaxing bubble bath, only with exercise!) Regular exercise also strengthens your immune system, which helps you fight off colds and flus.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 large yellow onion, chopped 2 apples, chopped ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 (3-4 pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage ½ tablespoon minced fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 tablespoon cinnamon 3 to 4 cups vegetable broth Freshly ground black pepper For serving, optional Chopped parsley Toasted pepitas Crusty bread 18 | Winter 2021–22

METHOD: 1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and several grinds of fresh pepper and sauté until soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the squash and apples and cook until it begins to soften, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes.

2. Add the garlic, sage, rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

Stir and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant, then add 3 cups of the broth.

Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

3. Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, working in batches if necessary, and blend until smooth. If your soup is too thick, add up to 1 cup more broth and blend.

Season to taste and serve with parsley, pepitas, and crusty bread.

All the ingredients can be dropped into a crock pot and cooked slowly all day while you’re at work or play. Add lentils for added protein!

Tiffany Style Luncheon and Fashion Show

HAMPTON HALL CHARITABLE Luncheon Tiffany Style!

It was an event that Holly Golightly would have loved.

The September 22 Tiffany Style Luncheon and Fashion Show hosted by the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund (HHCF) offered a touch of elegance, lots of excitement and an important opportunity to offer support to underprivileged children and families throughout our area.

T

he affair attracted more than 140 people and brought in over $16,000 to benefit the HHCF’s annual grants program, which for the past 12 years has helped fund an increasing number of essential programs offered by local nonprofit organizations. This year’s grant recipients will be announced in December.

Tiffany Luncheon Preparation

“The luncheon was our most successful event ever, and we’re thrilled not only by the amount of money we raised but also by the overwhelming support of our business sponsors, our committed volunteers and our wonderful community as a whole,” said HHCF Chair Denise Cadres.

As an added attraction, guests were able to buy tickets and try their luck at winning filled-to-the-brim raffle baskets that included an overnight stay at the Montage in Palmetto Bluff, a pair of glittering diamond earrings, a massage from the Hampton Hall Spa, a gift certificate from Lux Spa, Spode table accessories, crystal serving pieces, and a variety of gifts to accessorize a home or entertain friends and family.

The clubhouse sparkled in Tiffany blue and white, and guests were dressed in their best with many wearing little black dresses and white pearls, of course. The setting served as a perfect background for the highlight of the afternoon: a fashion show sponsored by Cocoon in Bluffton, with Hampton Hall “models” walking the red carpet wearing dozens of pretty dresses, tops and slacks all designed for life in the Lowcountry.

“We started planning the luncheon and fashion show in late spring, hoping it would increase our grants budget and offer our guests a pleasant afternoon,” said Sandy Rak, HHCF board member and the driving force behind the event. “Instead, our imaginations took over as did our desire to work as hard as we could to create an unforgettable experience for everyone who attended. The result was something we never expected but are very proud of.”

FUND Now, as the holidays approach, the HHCF has two more events planned — our annual Toy Drive beginning in late November and the Holiday Open House Tour on December 5. Then on March 18, the Par 3 Golf Tournament: Tee Off Against Cancer in the Lowcountry takes place. Look for more details on these activities on our Facebook page.
