n a day and year where time is a precious commodity, it’s important to find the right words to thank volunteers who take time from their busy lives to serve in both our club community and the greater Lowcountry. Volunteering takes commitment, energy and, to state the obvious, giving and heart-felt support.

We have countless volunteers at Hampton Hall, and in addition, the Board, committee members, advisory group members, and community activity club leaders add value, making Hampton Hall the great place it is to call home. These volunteers strive to bring us together and do their best to serve the greater good and growth of our community in all aspects.

On Wednesday, July 20, Hampton Hall will host the Community Club Fair event, which showcases the variety of ways you as a member can become involved in your Club and community. This event will take place at the at the Community Clubhouse from 5:30-7:00 PM.

Next, I would like to recognize the Hampton Hall Club Staff. In a time where dedicated personnel are hard to find, we are but a small group that perseveres to raise the bar for our membership.

The team continues to receive positive feedback from the members, which reminds us our staff contributes to the overall experience and provides a wonderful value to our community as well.

From my perspective, our team at Hampton Hall is phenomenal!

They work endless hours from season to season and the Club has been busier than ever with events and activities on the golf course, at the fitness center, on the courts, and in the food and beverage arenas. We are grateful for those who come to work every day to provide us with the services and unlimited opportunities we can participate in here at Hampton Hall.

member MOMENTS Mix & Mingle Tables

Mix & Mingle tables are designated at dining events, such as Prime Rib & Pasta Night and Wicked Wednesday, throughout the year. Members may request the Mix & Mingle table to be seated with other Club members at the 6:30 PM seating. The Mix & Mingle tables are a great way to meet your community neighbors while dining at Hampton Hall. Look for Mix & Mingle announcements on the Club website and in the Tuesday Highlights eblast.

Ladies’ Mix & Mingle Luncheons

The Ladies’ Mix & Mingle Luncheons are small, informal gatherings that provide the opportunity to get to know other members of Hampton Hall. Ambassadors facilitate an icebreaker activity in the Hampton Room and afterwards everyone enjoys lunch together at Pete’s Grill. It does not matter if you have lived here 10 months or 10 years, come to lunch and meet the ladies of Hampton Hall! Upcoming luncheons are scheduled for Wednesdays, July 20 and August 17. Registration opens 30 days in advance. Be sure to register early as the luncheons do sell out!

memberSPOTLIGHT Gene & Karen Balerna

A

ll the way from Massachusetts, Gene and Karen Balerna made Hampton Hall home in 2015.

Gene grew up in a neighborhood in Boston, MA. He graduated from UMass Lowell with a BS Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance.

While working at Fidelity Investments, he pursued his Masters Degree in Finance from Bentley University, graduating in 1999. After graduation Gene opened his own Registered Investment Advisory firm to serve the needs of high net worth individuals.

Karen grew up in a small suburb in MA. She received her BS degree in Nursing from Boston College and worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Boston Harvard Medical teaching hospital, for over 26 years. Karen saw a need for patients to have better communication with an understanding of what their doctors were telling them regarding their health care needs. They need to understand all their options so that they can make the best decisions 6 | Summer 2022

for themselves. In 2013, she started a patient advocacy business, Nurse Advocate Partners, to help fulfill this need.

Gene and Karen met in 1987, while working at the same summer job during college. They got married in 1993 and built their first house in a new community in Norton, MA. This was their first introduction to a neighborhood with an HOA, and Gene was treasurer of the board for six years.

After having 3 children, they decided they had outgrown their home and moved to a neighborhood in Walpole, MA. They thought this would be their forever home, but after taking several vacation trips to Hilton Head to visit with friends who moved there, they started putting it in the back of their heads that this might be a nice place to retire! Well, an opportunity arose before they were ready to retire. Gene received a job offer from an investment firm in Ridgeland, SC, where he could take his current clients to the firm and work with new clients. This accelerated their plan to move South before retirement. Gene moved to Hilton Head and lived with friends, while Karen stayed in MA with the 3 kids to pack up and sell their house.

A few years before making the decision to move, the Balernas went out with a Realtor to get a sense of some of the neighborhoods in the Bluffton/Hilton Head area.

Karen and Gene have 3 children. Scott is 24 years old and is currently in nursing school, Craig is 22 years old and graduating from Clemson with a degree in Animal Veterinary Science and Courtney is 19 years old and currently finishing her freshman year of nursing school at UConn.

In addition to busy careers, the Balernas are also involved at Hampton Hall. Gene enjoys volunteering and was a member of the Finance Committee for 3 years and is in his second year on the Long Range Planning Committee. Karen likes to play bunco and enjoys participating in the Ladies with Ladies activities. They both enjoy going to the outdoor pool in the evening after work in the summer, eating out at the Club and biking or walking around the neighborhood to enjoy the sunset, friendly neighbors and wildlife.

Hampton Hall was one of their favorite neighborhoods that they looked at. Initially, it was the beautiful landscape as you come over the bridge. They also liked how every house is different and not “cookie-cutter.” The tour of the clubhouse, the indoor and outdoor pools and the gorgeous golf course also made Hampton Hall a favorite neighborhood for their family. When the time came to house-hunt, Hampton Hall was the main focus. We were so happy when we found a house in Hampton Hall that the whole family loved! The kids said that one of their requirements was that it has to have a palm tree! There are several palm trees on their lot on Hampton Hall Blvd where they purchased their home in June 2015.

In their spare time, Karen and Gene enjoy traveling and spending time with their family. They have taken trips to FL, Gatlinburg, TN, Italy, Turks and Caicos and Aruba, as well as trips back to MA to visit family and friends. They also enjoy exploring Savannah and the Lowcountry.

golfCORNER The Member Guest

T

wo of the coolest events at our Club each year are the Member Guest tournaments. It is so fun to see all of the guests that come and the stories that they bring along with them. The events are typically held in the spring and take place over multiple days.

Our Ladies’ Member Guest theme this year was Pearls, Putts and Pars. The first day was a fun day format with players competing in teams of 4 followed by an evening cocktail party. The second day was team best ball with 8 flights competing. The event wrapped up with a luncheon and awards ceremony. There were plenty of pearls, laughs and good times at this year’s event.

The Men’s format features 6 teams playing against each other in one of eleven flights. Each team plays five matches over the weekend – one match against each of the other teams in the flight. The matches are nine holes and the event concludes with a shoot out and dinner with music and dancing.

One of the most fun things for me is to watch the teams that stick together year after year. There is a unique conversation between teammates that have played together many years. They finish each other’s sentences and move together like a finely tuned instrument. Fathers play with sons…I love it. The shootout had some good play in it this year with a very large gallery following the event.

H

ampton Hall Club has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Course since January 2013. Audubon International’s certification process is quite complex, requiring various projects to enhance the environment for wildlife as well as a lengthy application.

Our main Audubon certification project on the golf course and in the community was installing wood duck and bluebird boxes. The 40 bluebird boxes fill up with birds every year and the 27 wood duck boxes typically house a few ducklings as well.

Annette and Mike have spent countless hours over the years helping Hampton Hall Club maintain its Audubon certification.

The certification process also requires the club to establish a Resource Advisory Group. Members of the advisory group help identify potential wildlife projects to keep our course certified, perform a bird count every year, maintain bird and duck boxes, and are teachers of good environmental stewardship.

Hampton Hall’s Resource Advisory Group has included Annette Hausman, Mike Rambo and me since 2013.

Annette and Mike have spent countless hours over the years helping Hampton Hall Club maintain its Audubon certification. They have cleaned out all bird and duck boxes annually, listed which boxes needed repairs, provided wildlife counts of all

boxes, and provided ideas and advice. Many, many thanks to Annette and Mike for their contributions to this program.

We are now in search of new volunteers to assist Annette and me, since Mike is no longer serving on the Resource Advisory Group. Please consider joining us. If you are a bird lover and enjoy our Lowcountry environment, you will enjoy it!

fit&HEALTHY Exercising Outdoors in the Summer Months Michele DiCarlo, Sports, Recreation and Activities Director

W

hether you are jogging to the Fitness Center, riding your bike, or playing tennis, be mindful of how your body feels and stay ahead of heat related issues.

Exercising in hot weather puts added stress on your body.

Letting your core body temperature rise significantly can put you at risk for heat related illnesses. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate. If the humidity also is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. That pushes your body temperature even higher.

Take care of yourself through the summer months and stay well ahead of dehydration by drinking more water than usual as you will be sweating more.

Some heat related illnesses to be aware of: • Heat Cramps – Heat cramps can be painful, involuntary

muscle spasms that usually occur during heavy exercise in hot environments. The spasms may be more intense and more prolonged than are typical of nighttime leg cramps.

Fluid and electrolyte loss often contribute to heat cramps.

With heat cramps your body temperature may be within normal limits.

• Heat Exhaustion – Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of the water and salt, usually through

excessive sweating. People most prone to heat exhaustion are those that are elderly, have high blood pressure, and those working in a hot environment, so be kind to your landscapers.

• Heatstroke – Heatstroke is caused by the body

overheating. This is a condition marked by fever and often by unconsciousness, caused by failure of the body’s temperature-regulating mechanism when exposed to excessively high temperatures. A person’s core temperature is usually above 104. A person will usually be pale and may not be sweating.

Watch for warning signs and symptoms including: • Excessive sweating

• Increased heart rate

• Visual problems

• Low blood pressure

• Muscle cramps

• Irritability

• Nausea

• Dizziness

• Vomiting

• Confusion

• Cramps

• Weakness

If you feel any of these symptoms, you will need to lower your body temperature right away. Stop exercising immediately and get into an air-conditioned area and drink water immediately. Remove sweaty clothing. You can place cool towels, fan your body, apply ice packs to neck, drink sports drink or water. If you don’t feel better within 15-20 mins call 911 or seek medical attention.

Evaluate the weather before exercising, wear appropriate clothing, drink plenty of fluids, avoid mid-day exercising as it is the hottest time of day, wear sunscreen and knowing your fitness level are all ways to avoid heat related illness.

You can always workout at the Fitness Center indoors in the luxury of air conditioning. Your workout doesn’t need to be ruined by the heat. If you are training in the heat, ease into your workouts. Stay in the heat for a period and then incrementally increase your workout time. Again, drink plenty of fluids and stay safe.

SPINACH AND RICOTTA CHICKEN INGREDIENTS

METHOD:

FILLING

Preheat oven 350 degrees.

1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese

Prepare filling, combine all filling ingredients.

1/3 cup reduced-fat Parmesan cheese

Prepare chicken, place each chicken breast between 2 sheets heavy duty plastic wrap; pound to ¼ inch thickness using meat mallet or rolling pin. Divide and spread filling evenly over chicken. Roll up chicken. Tuck in sides; place chicken, seam down in 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Pour wine over chicken. Cover dish with foil.

Bake for 30 mins, basting chicken with wine every 10 mins. Uncover and bake an additional 10 mins or until chicken is done. Remove chicken from pan; keep warm. Strain wine mixture through a strainer over a bowl; discard solids. Serve wine mixture over chicken.

ampton Hall Charitable Fund continues to grow and support our mission of assisting families and children of Beaufort and Jasper Counties. This is all due to the outstanding participation and dedication of our Hampton Hall Community and the planning and work of our Charitable Fund Board and volunteers.

Thank you Hampton Hall residents!

This year on March 18, the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund “teed off” with our very popular “Par Three for Cancer Tournament”. This event sold out, thanks again to the support of our community. Contributions, hole sponsors, raffles, silent auctions and an awesome 50-50 raffle raised another record amount of $12,000. The funds were donated to Beaufort Memorial Keyserling Center. Kimberly Yawn shared the appreciation of our donation, “We are honored to be the recipient of the proceeds from this year’s Tournament! The money you have raised will go to improve cancer services throughout the Lowcountry. Your support allows Beaufort Memorial to continue to provide high-quality cancer care close to home.”

We welcomed spring by hosting our “Game Day Tournament” on April, 26. Ladies from Hampton Hall gathered to play mahjong, canasta and bridge.

Chef Jared and his team served a lovely “Southern Luncheon” enjoyed by all participants. Prizes and donations allowed us to once again donate the proceeds to our yearly grant program.

Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated at our events.

Continuing into the Fall, we are planning a Big Surprise event. The details are still in the development stage. However, it will include wine and beer, and of course, lots of fun “fundraising”. Mark your calendars for October 8 and 9.

courtSIDE Summer Tips to Stay Hydrated on the Courts Paul Tollefson, Head Tennis Professional

I

t’s that time of the year again where summer temperatures in the Lowcountry can easily reach the mid-90s with heat indexes well into the 100s. Staying hydrated is not only crucial for your performance on the tennis and pickleball courts, but also important for your health.

Dehydration can dramatically impact stress on the body and this process can significantly decrease performance.

Dehydration of as little as 1-2 percent of body weight (only 1.5-3 pounds for a 150 lb. athlete) has been shown to reduce performance. Dehydration of 3 percent or more of body weight increases a tennis player’s risk of heat-related illness (heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke). There have been a number of cases of players not being able to finish matches due to dehydration at the highest levels all the way down to the local club player.

Here are a few tips you can follow during the hot summer months: 1. Aim to drink at least one 16-20 oz bottle of electrolyte enhanced sports drink at least an hour or two before the match/practice. Limit the number of caffeinated beverages you intake.

2. During every changeover, aim to drink at least 10-12 oz of water. If match play is expected to last more than an hour, a sports drink is a better option diluted with water.

3. Wear loose fitting and light clothing. Change shirts at least once per match/practice if possible.

4. Drink consistently, not just when thirsty. The body may be 2% dehydrated by the time thirst is experienced.

After the match/practice: 1. Drink at least one normal sized bottle of a sports drink.

Adding extra sodium to the beverage will also speed rehydration by allowing the athlete to drink more fluid and retain more fluid in the system.

2. Try to get 10-20 grams of protein into your body with an hour after play as this will aid in recovery.

Athletes increase their risk of heat illness as they become dehydrated. It is not uncommon for athletes to put themselves at risk for dehydration in as little as an hour of exercise. This can be even sooner if the athlete comes into the practice or match already dehydrated.
