THE DIGNITY OF WORK

W

hen I was first starting out in my career, I read an article on the Dignity of Work. At the time, I really did not understand it all, but the basic concepts stuck with me. Now, many years later, I think regularly about this.

While work is necessary to simply pay the rent and buy some food, it is so much more than that. Work allows us to participate in something bigger than ourselves. It pulls us out of our narrow personal vision and puts us into the wider world, allowing us to contribute to the greater good. I think about this in terms of our 500 employees at Hammer and the over 1,800 people we support in some way.

For many, if not all, there is a desire to work and contribute to the world. At Hammer, we work hard to provide a dynamic and satisfying work environment for our employees. In our strategic plan for the next three years it is one of the central issues we are focusing on.

For the people we support, work is also a central issue. More and more, we work with and advocate on behalf of the people we support to help them find meaningful jobs. We are very concerned with the difficulty that all providers of work supports are having in our new disability services financial structure.

While a lot of lip service is given to helping people find and maintain work, the reality is that cuts in funding make the necessary supports almost impossible to provide.

While Hammer has never provided many formal work supports for people with disabilities, we have long partnered with providers of these supports to ensure that people have the opportunity for a quality, well-rounded life. We will continue to advocate for people with disabilities to get all the supports they need.

As we move into summer, I hope you enjoy this issue of Discoveries. Please know that we are grateful for the many ways you partner with, encourage, and support us.

JULIE WESLEY-WONG: CONTINUING THE FAMILY LEGACY

O

ne of the newest members of Hammer’s Board of Directors is Julie Wesley-Wong.

Julie is continuing the family legacy of service started by her loving parents, Mary and Dick Wesley, who raised ten children, including her brother Mickey, who lives at Hammer. “They are a hard act to follow, but I think they’d be really happy to see how the next generation has carried on,” says Julie.

Today, in addition to being a Hammer board member and on the Reach for Ralph committee, Julie is an early childhood special education teacher and evaluator for the Osseo School District.

“Mickey was a big part of my chosen profession, and I even worked as a Hammer DSP for a couple of years when I graduated from college,” she says.

Julie’s first connection with Hammer was when Mickey moved into Hammer’s Boys Floor in 1978, when he was 11 years old, and Julie was 12. “It has been more than 40 years since that big day, and I’m glad to say that Mickey leads a happy life

at Hammer,” says Julie. “He has a life he could not have at home. He is active in the community, and with the support of his caregivers, he is able to pursue the things he loves and enjoys.”

Mickey lives in Hammer’s Wentworth home with three housemates, including two men from the original Hammer dorms, Murray and Mark. The home was designed and financed by Mary Wesley in 2000. It features wide hallways and doors, accessible bathrooms, and an entryway ramp. Knowing Mickey had a home for a lifetime provided her mom with peace because she knew she would not be around forever. Through her vision and commitment to Hammer, Mary’s gifts live on today and without end.

When asked what she likes about her job, Sarah says, “I like the work, the people, and the hours.” Some of her responsibilities include folding, stacking, delivering, along with collecting towels and washing and folding capes, gowns, and blankets. Sarah works most afternoons and has started to develop friendships with her co-workers. “I appreciate her steady work and sweetness,” says Marlene, her new co-worker and friend.

Juut is a very busy salon and that is how Sarah likes it. She is a hard worker with a good work ethic. The people have been kind, welcoming, and appreciative. Arriving early every day has given Sarah time to visit 4 | Hammer Discoveries

Her mornings are open for pursuing other interests and activities. She will often go on walks, exercise, and go to art classes or open studio before work. This has helped her feel more a part of her local community.

Sarah is now in a place where she is growing, thriving, and happy. She consistently rates her days a “ten.” It has been moving and rewarding to be there with her and witness her transformation. We are all excited to see Sarah soar to new heights in her job and in her life.

urses at Hammer provide medical support to individuals so they remain healthy, safe, and as independent as possible in their supported homes and apartments.

Our health care team consists of five full-time nurses, along with a full-time department coordinator. Nurses provide 24/7 on-call support to the individuals served by Hammer.

The nursing team stays busy, making regular visits to our 36 homes and 10 apartment programs and overseeing treatment and coordination of medications.

In May, 2019 we honored our nursing team during Nurse Appreciation Week. Below are a few of the comments we hear quite frequently about the quality of services our nursing staff provides the individuals in our homes and apartments.

HAMMER TRAVEL

TEN YEARS OF OPPORTUNITIES AND DREAMS

H

ammer Travel’s story really begins in 1923 when Hammer Residences opened its doors. The concept was simple: “Be a community of people who respect an individual’s abilities, whose collective spirit makes dreams come true, and whose innovations lead the way.” Hammer Residences has stayed true to this concept and continues to be a well-respected service provider for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, thus making Hammer Travel a natural extension to Hammer’s mission.

It was in 2008 when two of Hammer’s program managers, Tom Ryan and Josh Senso, realized that Hammer possessed the staffing resources, passion, and commitment to deliver a quality and safe travel experience for people needing support.

They approached Hammer’s late CEO, Tim Nelson, with a business outline. Tim, excited about expanding Hammer’s mission, and understanding the importance of travel as a life experience, presented the idea to Hammer’s Board of Directors, who then gave the go ahead. Tom and Josh immediately began bringing all the pieces together. Josh took the lead on organizing the business requirements such as creating the articles of organization, filing for a business license, creating spreadsheets, and mapping out marketing strategies. Tom focused on the company's policies and

procedures, recruitment and training of staff, and making travel industry contacts. Neither Tom nor Josh had ever run a business before, or dreamed of working in the travel industry, but because they believed in themselves and the service they were providing, they dove headfirst into the project. On July 14, 2009, Hammer Travel officially became a licensed LLC.

The first years had their ups and downs as any new business would, however, Hammer Travel had the support of a dedicated Board of Directors, all of whom had business backgrounds. Their sound advice and insights, combined with Tom and Josh’s commitment, formed Hammer Travel into an established business. As the business grew, so arose the need for more help in the office. That is when Ann Martinka joined the team. Ann’s experience in the travel industry and her sincere and warm disposition made her the perfect candidate to fill the customer relations role. With Ann on board, the company was able to fine-tune its service, while building relationships in the community and with its travelers and their caregivers.

Over the next few years, Hammer Travel continued to evolve as a company. By learning from past experiences, focusing on customer satisfaction, and having a fun, yet professional staff team on each trip, Hammer Travel grew in popularity and has served an average of 250 people each year. Today,

the company consists of Tom Ryan, Ann Martinka, and Katie Pease, along with roughly 60 travel staff and volunteers. The whole team strives for high-quality standards on every trip they run and have enjoyed plenty of positive feedback, such as: “Great trip itinerary and fun places to visit, staff are very focused on each traveler and their needs” and “Our sister just loves, loves, loves going on trips with Hammer!”

Hammer Travel was formed on the idea that travel plays a crucial role in the quality of one’s life and promotes individual growth by enhancing social inclusion, providing learning opportunities, and strengthening self-confidence. Ten years later, this idea is still the core of Hammer Travel’s vision. Like its parent company, Hammer Residences, Hammer Travel is committed to putting the goals, needs, and individuality of the people being served at the forefront, and will go into the future continuing to be the best it can be.

SUMMIT ACADEMY

A PATHWAY TO SUCCESS

A

t Hammer, we believe that the most important role in the organization is that of the Direct Support Professional (DSP): They carry out our mission of helping the people we serve live life to its fullest.

We are always recruiting DSPs, and one of the ways we do that is by partnering with local educational and vocational institutions. One of the valuable partnerships we have is with Summit Academy OIC, whose mission statement reads, “We exist to assist individuals in developing their ability to earn and to become contributing citizens in their community.”

Our fundamental belief is: “the best social service program in the world is a job.” Summit Academy’s vision is to be recognized as a regional leader in the evolution of workforce development educational services, initiatives, and policy. Summit Academy offers training to adults who want careers in the fields of construction, healthcare, and information technology at no out-of-pocket cost to the student.

Our relationship with Summit Academy’s career services department allows Hammer to attend healthcare career fairs and participate in mock interviews with their healthcare students who are approaching graduation. This targeted approach puts me as the recruiter face-to-face with students who have completed 20 weeks of training in a field they are passionate about. We are able to discuss what they’ve learned, as well as what Hammer has to offer in a career.

I’m proud to say that we have hired four Summit grads who all came on board as assistant program managers (APMs) in Hammer’s residential group homes. Their training at Summit prepares them for both the important direct care aspects of their job, as well as the administrative responsibilities that require excellent communication and organizational skills. Our APMs assist with administrative tasks related to the medical, financial, and activity-related needs of the people we serve. APMs are in a prime position for promotion to leadership roles within the organization, and I hope to see our Summit recruits on that track.

ADVOCACY

THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIPS

B

uilding relationships is key. In our current landscape, legislators control so much of the funding that impacts the disability services industry. This is why your advocacy efforts are crucial.

People often get caught up in the technical aspects of advocacy.

While these details are important, it is just as important to tell our stories. When legislators make decisions, they are influenced by what they know. For example, every legislator knows what a nursing home is, and many times they have a personal connection to one as well, whether it’s through an aging parent, family member, or friend. When they make a decision, they have a clear picture of what a nursing home is. Most of the time, this is not the case regarding knowledge about our group homes or apartment programs.

Raising awareness about Hammer starts with you. Contact your legislator. Make sure they know who you, and the individuals who are supported by Hammer, are. Oftentimes, legislators don’t know that we as a sector are their constituents. You can change that!

One of the most valuable experiences you can initiate is inviting a legislator to visit one of our group homes or apartment programs. If they don’t respond right away, don’t get discouraged. Persistence and patience are key when advocating. Once the legislator visits, they get a visual of what we do and who we serve. This is crucial when they are making decisions that impact our industry.

Joel Amundson, the father of one of the individuals who calls a Hammer apartment home, recently hosted Representative Kristin Bahner at our Lawndale home. It was a successful visit, as Rep. Bahner met the individuals who live at the home and spent the evening discussing Hammer’s goals and how staff make a difference in the lives of the individuals they support.

Please contact your legislators and share your stories. By doing so, you can truly make a difference in the lives of the individuals we support here at Hammer.

A TAPESTRY OF VOLUNTEERS

By Cathy Thoma, Director of Volunteer Resources

V

olunteers are the threads that are woven throughout the fabric of Hammer, making us stronger and enabling us to help those we support live life to the fullest. Our volunteers give their time and talents in a variety of ways, each having a positive impact on those we serve.

By utilizing volunteers, Hammer Travel has been able to offer trips at a reasonable cost.

Volunteers are also an integral part of our Community Life program. We depend on our volunteers to take the helm by coaching Floor Hockey and Fitness Connection (formally Iron Man team), leading walking groups and book clubs, hosting our monthly Bingo games, and assisting on the annual fishing trips. The Community Life volunteers ensure that all of the participants are enjoying themselves while staying fit and active.

Hammer’s Central Office volunteers, self-named the “Thursday Ladies,” are indispensable, and are frequently sought after to help with mass mailings, scanning, medication disposal, and other projects. Their specialty, however, is designing and creating Hammer’s handmade cards. You will know you have received one because they are beautiful and have “made by a Hammer volunteer” stamped on the back.

Hammer Travel volunteers bring their sense of wonder and adventure on each trip. They are needed to accompany our travelers on their vacation and provide supports to enhance their travel experience. Volunteers assist Hammer Travel staff with transportation, trip activities, social and community interactions, finances, and self-care.

Our Reach for Ralph gala and Family Day Picnic require 100 volunteers each in order for the events to run smoothly.

From the planning committee to those helping the day of, our special event volunteers are the ones who make that happen. During Reach for Ralph, volunteers decorate the venue, friendly faces greet our guests and register them for the evening, and others work tirelessly behind the scenes, packaging silent auction items and readying them for check out. The Family Day Picnic sees volunteers helping at check in, painting fingernails, serving food, directing the famous cupcake walk, and leading a variety of carnival games. It’s a joyful experience for all.

These include our Board members who share their business acumen with us and help to develop our long-term goals and strategic framework. It also includes our seamstresses who repair and alter clothes for those we support, photographers who attend our events and capture the excitement of the day, and pet therapy volunteers. Our pet therapists visit our homes and apartments with their dogs (and cats!) and help our individuals by alleviating stress and getting exercise by walking a dog. Sometimes, just petting a dog that is wagging its tail is all that is really needed.

Our corporate and church group partners are a cornerstone of our volunteer population. They assist us by participating in Hammer’s Fall Yard Clean Up, driving those we support to church, socializing with individuals in our homes and Day Support program, and hosting parties and picnics. They often lend a hand at our special events.

Our tapestry would not be complete without our Direct Service Volunteers. These individuals are paired with someone we support who is looking for a friend. They are matched based on mutual interests and spend time together doing things they both enjoy. This social connection greatly enhances the quality of life for those we support as well as for our volunteers.

F

ist pumping the air a player’s head tilts skyward and a loud celebratory cry rings out across the court. “YAHOO!” It doesn’t matter who scored, the cheer is the same and always uttered with an enthusiastic consistency that propels the others on the court to exchange high fives and congratulations with each other.

This is Hammer Floor Hockey. It’s fun. It’s commitment. It’s teamwork. It’s exercise. It’s community. It’s excitement. It’s belonging.

The Community Life department at Hammer focuses on providing opportunities for community engagement, personal wellness, fitness, and nutrition for all individuals supported by Hammer. Hammer Floor Hockey has become a staple in the Community Life programming, and with the dedicated support from volunteer coaches, Andy and Sarah, the participation in this activity has been outstanding. For those who may not be familiar with floor hockey, it’s essentially just like ice hockey but played without the ice and skates and more focused on the recreational aspects of the game.

Meeting for fall, winter, and spring sessions, Hammer Floor Hockey happens on Sunday evenings at the Hopkins Activity Center. Over the last several seasons, those who participate on a regular basis have formed bonds with each other and the coaches. Everyone has a place in the game. Support is given freely from cheers of “you can do it” to “great job” and “keep it up.” For those who come to watch the players in action, it’s always a fun time. Seeing a player get their first goal of the game is exhilarating. As you watch the players work the puck across the court and toward the goal, you see teamwork along the way. You see strategic passing of the puck from player to player and an intentionality to ensure everyone has a chance to be part of the action. Everyone has their own style and preferences, but everyone comes together to play. Then, you get to hear that YAHOO! When I think about living a full and happy life, I think about the importance of activities like Hammer Floor Hockey. Having a place to belong, a place to be yourself, a place with friends and support — all of these things contribute to overall happiness and are part of what Hammer Floor Hockey offers to its participants.

PASSION FOR ART AND HAMMER Ellen Timmerman Borer, Chief Development Officer

he said yes to a simple request and never looked back.

In 2005, Sue Gregor was asked to come to Hammer to help frame some artwork created by individuals served here. As a newly retired art teacher, that seemed like a pretty easy request to fulfill. Sue came to her first meeting and has been a member of the Hammer family ever since.

JJ Hill Days parade brings out the best of Hammer.

Her passion for art fueled those who have the same passion at Hammer. Some have become friendly acquaintances and others dear friends. Sue’s deep commitment happened over time, like when our Art Committee excitedly chose artwork for cards with quotes that were sure to sell at JJ Hill Days. Sue was all in. She even joined us in the parade, walking side-byside and lending a hand whenever needed.

As a committed artist and volunteer, Sue was among the first to really get excited about our Ralph statues. For over two years, she helped to plan and implement our Ralph statue projects: soliciting artists, sponsoring, moving and celebrating everything Ralph. Building awareness about Hammer — and the individuals that Sue now calls her friends — was easy for her. It was about art and Hammer.

She also painted a Ralph for her church, St. Phillip the Deacon, connecting Hammer more deeply to her community.

With each new project that Sue said yes to, she connected with individuals served at Hammer, like Beth and Sarah. She knew early on that art was a great way to encourage individuals at Hammer to express their emotions, dreams, and desires. She sat beside many artists, helping them understand their art and themselves.

We tend to remember the big events like the art show that Sue made happen at Your Arts Desire, a local art gallery Sue with Beth at her solo art show.

A real dream come true for Beth.

But Sue would say it is the little things such as simple, quiet times of sharing her passion in her home and one-on-one time with Sarah that develops the deepest relationships. That is the most important!

As we reminisced about art ­— her true passion — and lasting friendships, Sue pointed out, “It is my good fortune to have found Hammer.”
