GIVE, ADVOCATE, VOLUNTEER Recently we came across a document that is a collection of letters from earlier days of Hammer Residences. These letters remind us that “Give, Advocate, Volunteer� is not just a tagline created by a marketing department. It is part of who we are at Hammer and who we have been from the very beginning.

Reading these letters also reminds us that the core of Hammer has not really changed in 93 years. We focus our energy first and foremost on the people we support. We do this by providing daily support but also by giving a voice to people with disabilities in the larger community. Advocating can be anything from helping a person voice their concerns about a matter at home or work to talking to a legislator about voting for increased funding.

We do our work by building a circle of support that includes you, as well as professional staff, neighbors, friends, family, and volunteers.

At Hammer we are privileged to have over 500 volunteers who roll up their sleeves and join us in this important work.

We also rely on the financial gifts of many friends of Hammer. There was a time when society (government) provided all the financial support needed. This has not been true for some time. Like the early decades of Hammer, we rely more and more on financial gifts from you, along with our families, friends, and neighbors to do our work.

We are very grateful for the over 1,000 donors who supported our work in 2015.

A New Beginning: In 2015, Hammer was approached by Hennepin County to open a children’s home. Lisbeth Place will open in the spring of 2016.

•

Independence: 11 individuals supported by Hammer at our Broadmoor Apartments moved into our new Parkway Apartments in November 2015.

•

Advocating for Change: MA-EPD (Medical Assistance for Employed People with Disabilities) 2014 Premium Increase was repealed in 2015. Hammer self-advocates, parents, and staff worked hard to help repeal that increase by giving testimony, meeting with legislators, telling their stories and rallying at the Capitol.

•

Making Our Voices Heard: 6 Hammer self-advocates participated in the Faces of Disability campaign at the Capitol. 60 Hammer staff and family members wrote letters to Governor Dayton requesting he support a 5% rate increase.

17 Hammer families attended town hall forums to testify or to hear testimony. 4 Legislators came to visit Hammer homes.

Matt is a huge country music fan and his dream was to travel to Nashville/Memphis. He celebrated his 30th birthday in Nashville on a Hammer Travel trip. “It was the best birthday EVER.” said Matt.

The Houstons recognized Hammer as being a very important part of their lives, especially in the life of their daughter and only child, Kerry. They knew that leaving their estate directly to Kerry wasn’t an option; Receiving a significant inheritance would disqualify her from the benefits that make it possible for her to be supported

by Hammer.

They wanted to express their gratitude and appreciation for the services and support Hammer has provided to Kerry and many others who live with disabilities.

After heartfelt reflection and discussion, Pat and Michael chose to establish the Patricia and Michael Houston Home Accessibility Fund as part of their estate plan.

Since Kerry moved to Hammer’s Carlson home in 1995, she has developed independence and gained self-confidence with the support of her staff team. She feels empowered to advocate for herself. The Carlson staff have encouraged Kerry to explore her own interests. She enjoys music, attending theater and musical productions, and sporting events. Kerry loves participating in a bowling league and exercising at the YMCA. “This gift is intended to benefit all individuals supported by Hammer. It will help sustain the future of Hammer and enhance their ability to serve people with disabilities, especially the challenges that face adults as they age,” says Pat.

JOE AND KATHY REIS Joe and Kathy Reis began volunteering for Hammer more than 25 years ago. Through their service at Holy Name of Jesus in Medina, they became good friends with many of the people Hammer serves.

In 2010, Joe joined the Board of Directors soon becoming a member of the Executive Committee and Finance Committee chair. Joe’s board service is guided by Hammer relationships developed, in part, during Sunday morning worship, fellowship, and rides to church.

Joe’s board service will come to an end this year, but he and Kathy will continue their volunteer work through Holy Name. Joe will also continue as a member of the Hammer Finance Committee. Thank you Joe and Kathy for your service and dedication to Hammer!
