FROM THE DESK OF STACY TURNER, HEAD OF SCHOOL

As I walk through the halls of Hamlin Robinson School each day, I am reminded of what makes this community so extraordinary — the people, the passion, and the shared purpose that guide everything we do. Each corner of our school tells a story of generosity, growth, and the power of learning that lasts a lifetime.

This fall, we are honored to create the Hayden Hall Math Resource Center, a space inspired by the late Hayden Hall, beloved former math instructor. Filled with his collection of games, manipulatives, and creative teaching tools, this center will offer students opportunities to explore math in new and joyful ways. It is a living tribute to Hayden’s belief that learning should be hands-on, engaging, and full of wonder.

We are also grateful to the Foster/ White Gallery for their recent donation of a fabulous Paul Vexler sculpture. This piece will be part of the Hayden Hall Math Resource Center and honors the relationship between mathematics and art.

We hope this piece will brighten this shared space, spark curiosity, and remind us that creativity and expression are at the heart of how our students see and shape the world.

As our Middle School continues to grow and thrive, we see every day how transformative these years can be. Middle school is a time when students discover who they are as learners, thinkers, and friends. At HRS, we provide a supportive, dynamic environment where students can take risks, build confidence, and prepare for what lies ahead, both academically and personally. Each level builds upon the one before, helping move students toward high school.

Our Lower School brought that same joyful energy to life during the annual STEM Night on October 30. The halls buzzed with excitement as students dissected owl pellets, built and launched bat planes, and explored hands-on activities that blended curiosity, collaboration, and discovery. It was a wonderful reminder of how

powerful learning can be, and how much joy our students find in exploring the world around them.

The HRS Learning Center continues to extend Hamlin Robinson’s impact beyond our own campus.

By training educators, supporting parents, and providing professional development for schools across the region, the Learning Center helps ensure that effective, evidencebased instruction reaches even more students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

And of course, none of this would be possible without you, our incredible community of parents, families, and friends.

Your advocacy, volunteerism, and generosity are the foundation of our success. To all of the donors listed in our Annual Report, please know how deeply your contributions are appreciated. You are helping us advance our mission, support our teachers, and open doors for every HRS student.

Mathematics

As our community continues to mourn the loss of beloved former math instructor Hayden Hall, we are reminded every day of the joy, curiosity, and wonder he brought to learning. Hayden had an extraordinary gift for helping students see mathematics not just as numbers on a page, but as puzzles to explore, games to play, and patterns to delight in.

This summer, family and friends of Hayden gathered at Hamlin Robinson School to celebrate his life and the countless ways he inspired those around him.

During that gathering, the school gratefully received a remarkable donation — Hayden’s personal collection of math games, manipulatives, and teaching tools. Each piece reflects his lifelong passion for making math hands-on, accessible, and fun.

In his honor, we are creating the Hayden Hall Math Resource Center, located in the Commons on the first floor of the Middle School. This inviting new space will soon be filled with Hayden’s collection, where students can explore math before school, during lunch, or in class, guided by their teachers. It will serve as a place where creativity, collaboration, and the spirit of joyful learning live on, just as Hayden would have wanted.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hall family for this generous and meaningful gift. Through these resources, Hayden’s love of learning will continue to inspire generations of HRS students.

A CONNECTION BETWEEN

Art, Math and Memory Sometimes, the most meaningful connections happen by chance.

When a parent of a Hamlin Robinson School alumnus was flipping through a recent edition of The Scoop, inspiration struck. She knew that the owners of the Foster/White Gallery were looking for a school to house one of their sculptures. She immediately thought of HRS, a place that had profoundly shaped her daughter, now thriving at San Diego State University.

That spark led to a conversation, a connection, and a gift.

Not long after, gallery employee Zoe Hensley reached out to Head of School Stacy Turner to share information about a piece by artist Paul Vexler — a sculptor known for intertwining art, mathematics, and the natural world.

Vexler, who studied physics before turning to sculpture, was fascinated by the mathematical beauty found in nature — spirals, helices, and geometric forms. His pieces seem to twist and breathe, capturing motion and pattern in wood.

Vexler passed away in 2022 at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of wonder and precision.

As Mr. Turner considered this generous offer, it reminded him of another connection: the memory of former math teacher Hayden Hall, and the school’s work to create the Hayden Hall Legacy Math Resource Center in the Middle School Commons. A sculpture born from both art and mathematics felt like a perfect tribute, a meeting point of creativity, intellect, and inspiration.

After thoughtful conversations with the Foster/White Gallery, the school gratefully accepted the donation of Vexler’s piece, Endless Knot. Crafted from hemlock, Endless Knot measures 120" x 48" x 46" and weighs 77 pounds — a mesmerizing ribbon of wood that loops and folds in harmony, never quite ending. The donation of the sculpture was made jointly by Sonia Siegel Vexler (Paul's widow) and Foster/White gallery.

Soon, the HRS community will be invited to view the sculpture in its new home, where it will stand as a lasting reminder: that art and mathematics are not opposites, but partners in beauty, curiosity, and endless discovery.

Discovery & Enrichment

$10K Challenge!

“Joan’s leadership taught us that discovery doesn’t stop at the edge of the curriculum. It lives in every experience that opens a student’s world.”

— Stacy Turner, Head of School When former Head of Hamlin Robinson School, Joan Beauregard, retired in 2018, the HRS community wanted to create a legacy of her leadership. Her desire was to establish an endowment that would ensure the students of HRS would always have access to enrichment opportunities beyond the four walls of the classroom.

With a donation from Joan and husband Jim — and buoyed by donations from scores of other HRS community members — the Joan Beauregard Endowment for Discovery and Enrichment was founded.

And because endowment gifts support a purpose in perpetuity, the endowment creates opportunities for our students every year!

Since its founding, the Beauregard Endowment has brought learning to life by funding special guests, visiting artists, authors, scientists, and performances that enrich the HRS experience.

These moments spark imagination, inspire confidence, and remind every student that the joy of learning reaches far beyond textbooks or lesson plans. From hands-on science presentations to storytelling workshops and live music experiences, these opportunities help our students see themselves as creators, thinkers, and explorers.

Now, thanks to the generosity of Joan Beauregard & Jim Woeppel and Andrea & Jon Archer, we have the extraordinary opportunity to grow this endowment even further. Up to $10,000 in gifts made to the Joan Beauregard Endowment for Discovery and Enrichment by December 31, 2025, will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

That means every gift, no matter the size, will have twice the impact, creating more opportunities for students to engage, imagine, and dream big.

Growth Confidence: Transforming into

THE HRS MIDDLE SCHOOL JOURNEY “Middle school is not something our students just get through—it’s a time they truly grow through.”

When people hear “middle school,” it often brings a knowing smile, or even a groan, recalling the whirlwind of adolescence. But at Hamlin Robinson School, we see these years as a remarkable opportunity. For our students with dyslexia and language-based learning differences, middle school is more than just a transitional phase, it’s a transformative journey. It’s where self-awareness grows, skills sharpen, and confidence takes root.

Why Middle School Matters Research tells us that the middle school years represent the second most significant period of growth and development in a person’s life, second only to early childhood.

This adolescent period can be both challenging and transformative, particularly for students with learning differences. At HRS, it becomes a time of discovery, empowerment, and identitybuilding.

Every element of Hamlin Robinson School’s Middle School program is designed intentionally. Our classrooms are safe, responsive environments where students feel understood and capable. We blend rigorous academics with targeted skill development in: • Executive function and organization • Self-advocacy and independence • Empathy, leadership, and collaboration Middle school at HRS isn’t just about academic content—it’s about understanding how students learn and who they are as learners.

A Journey in Three Parts Level 6: Building Independence The journey begins in Level 6, where students transition from the familiarity of Lower School to navigating multiple teachers, classrooms, and expectations.

With guidance and structure, they learn to manage schedules, assignments, and materials, building personal responsibility and a sense of capability.

Through the Caring School Community curriculum, students explore topics like inclusivity,

friendship, and well-being.

Enrichment classes—art, music, P.E., technology, and media arts— offer opportunities to stretch their creativity and grow their interests.

A two-night overnight at Camp Seymour early in the year helps students connect as a community, explore the outdoors, and build confidence in a new environment.

“Entering Middle School is a big shift for Level 6 students, especially learning to manage going from class to class and learning different systems in each class. At the beginning of the year, teachers spend a lot of time explicitly teaching students how to manage all of this. By the end of the year, I can enter the classroom a few minutes late... and find everyone following the routine, ready to go.”

Level 7: Discovering Identity and Voice

By Level 7, students are ready to go deeper—academically, socially, and personally. It’s a year where students begin to develop a clearer sense of who they are as individuals and learners. They take increased ownership of their learning, experiment with new ideas, and strengthen their peer relationships.

The Caring School Community curriculum continues with new themes, including peer influence, creativity, wellness, and conflict resolution. In the classroom, students explore Washington State History and Physical Science, often through projects and hands-on investigations that spark curiosity and critical thinking.

A two-night overnight at Camp Colman brings classroom learning into the natural world and further strengthens friendships, independence, and resilience.

“Level 7 is such a special time for students. They’ve gained the confidence and skills to move through school on their own, but they’re not yet weighed down by the pressures of high school. It’s a beautiful stage of discovery. It is a place where they can explore new ideas, genres, and skills without fear getting in the way.”

Level 8: Leadership and Launching Forward Level 8 is the capstone year—a time for reflection, leadership, and preparation for the next chapter. Students have opportunities to step into visible leadership roles across campus, model positive behavior, and support younger students. It’s a year where all their prior learning—academic, social, and personal—begins to come together with clarity and confidence.

Weekly high school transition classes support students in exploring different school options and help them understand what environments will best support their learning. These sessions also focus on tools and strategies for success beyond HRS, such as time management, study habits, and navigating new academic challenges.

One of the most meaningful experiences is writing a personal letter to their future high school teachers. In these letters, students describe how they learn best, what supports help them thrive, and what they’ve discovered about themselves. The process empowers them to speak with clarity and confidence about their learning journey—and marks a profound step toward self-advocacy and ownership.

In May, students spend a week at NatureBridge in Olympic National Park—an immersive outdoor learning experience that blends science, adventure, and reflection. This final trip becomes more than just a celebration; it’s the culmination of their transformation—a powerful experience that closes one chapter and opens another.

“I love watching students grow in confidence and skill over the course of the year. In Level 8 students are pushed to develop their self-advocacy and public speaking skills. Over the course of the year students become more comfortable utilizing and advocating for their accommodations. Additionally, we intentionally weave in opportunities for them to speak publicly. They read their work aloud to peers and other members of the community, they complete mock interviews that challenge them to speak confidently about their accomplishments and growth areas, and at the end of the year they write and deliver a speech to a live audience at graduation. That growth is so powerful to watch!”

For many, it’s in this final year that the full scope of their HRS journey truly comes into focus.

The habits, relationships, and insights built over time crystallize into a readiness that patiently and persistently is earned. Completing the eighth grade year allows students to step into high school not just as prepared learners—but as confident, whole individuals.

At graduation, each student writes and delivers a speech in front of more than 500 community members. These speeches often reflect on personal growth, friendships, and challenges overcome, offering a window into how far they’ve come since their first days in Middle School.

By the end of Level 8, students walk away not only with skills and strategies, but with a belief in themselves that is deeply rooted. They’ve learned how to set goals, pursue them with purpose, and adapt when things don’t go as planned. They know how to advocate for themselves, and they carry forward the assurance that they can handle what comes next.

Middle School at Hamlin Robinson is more than a bridge between childhood and adolescence. It is a transformative journey that is built over three years. Our students emerge with the confidence, skills, and self-awareness to thrive in high school and beyond. They’ve learned how they learn, who they are as learners, and that they can overcome obstacles to achieve the goals they set for themselves. These are lifelong gifts that grow out of a rich middle school experience. •

MEET AND GREET WITH

Rod Walton Director of Outreach & Learning Center

At HRS, we believe knowledge should be shared, not contained. That’s why the school launched its HRS Learning Center more than a decade ago.

When students, families, or educators need to learn, connect, or find support services, the HRS Learning Center provides key resources, including: • Tutoring and screening services for students • Parent education opportunities • Educator workshops • Resources about dyslexia • Student-centered initiatives • Inspiring speaker series events Rod Walton is currently in his third year at HRS and is actively expanding the work of the Learning Center. We sat down with Rod to learn more about his background, passion for education, and what excites him about serving the community inside and outside our walls.

Q: Tell us about yourself and your professional background.

Originally from Texas, I received my undergraduate degree from Baylor University before attending NYU for graduate studies. My career has spanned education, technology, and public service — including consulting work with global law firms, tech and telecom companies, and government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, FBI, SEC, and the European Union.

I’ve also served on several boards, including Sitike Counseling Center, the Department of Housing for San Mateo County, Samaritan House, and the Sierra Club of California.

I remain actively engaged in advocacy through my work on the board of People of Color in Independent Schools (POCISNW) and the Washington Poor People’s Campaign. My goal is to champion equity and meaningful change in every space I serve.

Q: What inspires you about the services and outreach work done through the HRS Learning Center?

Our vision in the HRS Learning Center is rooted in equity and access. We’re building a program where every student and family is seen, heard, and supported. We want to ensure that our services can reach those who need them most — not just those who can more easily find or afford them.

I love that we’re committed to meeting every student, parent, and educator where they are in their learning journey, helping them grow, thrive, and reach the next level. This is not just our mission – it’s our responsibility.

Q: What do you think people might be most surprised to learn about the HRS Learning Center?

Within the HRS community, there is high awareness of our tutoring program, including IEP/Service Plan support. I don’t know how many people know that we offer online tutoring services to students through a regional and nationwide network of tutors.

People might also be surprised to learn that the HRS Learning Center is teaming with the Benjamin Banneker Association, an equity affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), to open the first West Coast school site Math Room in the association in conjunction with the Hayden Hall Math Resource Center. This will be a monthly experience where the community can drop in for math support and engagement.

Q: What are your biggest projects for the coming year?

Thanks to a grant from Pitch Your Peers (Seattle), Literacy Quest connects King County families with free literacy screenings and reports, benefiting from the expertise of Hamlin Robinson School. In its pilot year, over 100 families participated in screenings — demonstrating the program’s impact and potential.

We anticipate at least that many again this year. As part of the grant, we have also developed and offered a related (and highly attended) teacher workshop for King County educators. We will offer two additional workshops this year, helping educators

statewide strengthen their literacy instruction and better support students with learning differences.

programs as we continue to build impactful, equitable opportunities together.

The Parents of Adolescents and Teens (PAT) Program, Next Steps Program (focused on supporting students with learning differences as they transition to higher education and the workplace), and our expanding work around executive functioning support are three initiatives we’re focused on growing this year. Each program is designed to meet the evolving needs of students and families through targeted skillbuilding, personalized support, and inclusive learning strategies.

A Legacy of Leadership: Trustees Reflect on 43 Years of HRS On a drizzly November afternoon, the Middle School was buzzing with history, gratitude, and vision.

Twenty-two past and present trustees gathered alongside three former heads of school and our current Head of School for a special luncheon honoring more than four decades of Hamlin Robinson School’s journey.

Laughter and conversation filled the room as guests reminisced about the many places HRS has called home over its 43-year history—beginning in borrowed classrooms in Bellevue, moving

through South Park and Capitol Hill, and ultimately growing into the two vibrant buildings we now steward on North Beacon Hill.

Former Trustee Leroy Lewis offered a moving reflection on his childhood experiences with dyslexia and the pivotal role his mother played in his path to becoming an engineer at Boeing.

Stacy Turner highlighted our school’s remarkable evolution and shared excitement about the strategic planning process now underway to chart HRS’s next chapter. Former Head of School Joan Beauregard spoke of the impact that these trustees have

had on shaping the future of so many students’ lives. And Alan Robinson, son of founders Hamlin and Mary Helen Robinson, spoke with pride about how far the program has come and how joyfully his parents would have embraced the school’s growth.

The photo captures the trustees and school leaders who were able to join us this year, a powerful snapshot of the dedication and legacy that continue to shape HRS. For those who couldn’t attend, we look forward to gathering again next year and continuing to celebrate the community that built, sustained, and believes in our mission.
