Dr. Olaf (Ole) Runquist

DR. OLAF (OLE) RUNQUIST, 90, passed away April 28, 2021. He taught chemistry at Hamline for 41 years. He wrote over 50 scientific articles during his career, many in collaboration with Hamline students, and earned a well-deserved reputation as one of Hamline's most beloved instructors.

Ole earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University and, eventually, his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Minnesota before coming to Hamline in 1957.

His students meant a great deal to him. Ole often told stories about his old students and his great pride in their accomplishments.

Away from the university, Ole enjoyed his cabin on the Whiteface Reservoir and being outdoors. He often attended opera performances and loved classical music. He was also an accomplished woodworker.

He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Jane Ann, five children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His legacy will live on at Hamline, but he will be sorely missed.

Alexandra “Sandy” Klas LHD ’08 (hon.)

ON TUESDAY, MAY 31, Hamline University, Minnesota, and the world lost a treasure: Alexandra “Sandy” Klas LHD ’08 (hon.).

The life she lived and the work she did on behalf of others stands as a testament to her generous heart and her commitment to helping people—to doing good. She used her artistic gifts, verbal acumen and interpersonal skills to effectively ameliorate inequities in education and promote opportunities for people living with disabilities. She did everything her way and we all took notice.

Sandy was a true Piper, supporting Hamline not only financially but also with her unforgettable presence. She and her late husband, Robert “Bob” ’52, LHD ’08 (hon.), were both Life Trustees and proud benefactors of Hamline University; Klas Center is named after them. Three of their six children attended Hamline: trustee Bob Klas Jr. ’75, Elizabeth (Klas) Polome ’78 and Tom Klas MBA ’08, MNM ’16.

Sandy will be missed by us all. Graduate
