Hamilton College COMMENCEMENT
CLINTON, NEW YORK May 19, 2024
          ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia derive much of their general style and symbolism from the gowns, cowls, and caps of the medieval universities of Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge. In 1895, most colleges and universities in the United States agreed to a common intercollegiate code. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves, and the master’s has long squared sleeves with a slit for the arm. The doctor’s gown is faced with velvet and has three velvet bars on each sleeve. Historically, the gown was black, but many degree-granting institutions now allow gowns in their own colors. The president and the dean wear caps and gowns designed for Hamilton College. The president also wears a medallion created as a symbol of his office by Ralph Menconi ’36. The academic hood, a descendant of the medieval cowl, indicates the wearer’s degree and field of study, as well as the degree-granting institution. The width of the velvet facing indicates the degree and its color the field of study: white for arts and letters; dark blue for philosophy; scarlet for theology; golden yellow for science. The lining of the hood is the color of the degree-granting institution: Hamilton’s is blue with a buff chevron. A poem popular in the 16th century says of the cap that “’Tis square like scholars and their books.” Some organizations and academic departments may choose to provide adornments for graduates such as stoles, cords, medallions, pins, and tassels from groups officially recognized by Hamilton College.
          THE HAMILTON DIPLOMA
The Hamilton diploma, written in Latin, is in the medieval tradition that considers undergraduates as apprentices. Once their apprenticeship is complete, they are allowed to “commence.” Here is an English translation of the diploma, as if it were being presented to Alexander Hamilton himself: Hamilton College in the State of New York extends its most cordial greetings to all who witness this document.
Know ye that ALEXANDER HAMILTON has studied the best of the sciences and arts with sufficient enthusiasm to be recognized as someone worthy of receiving the customary rewards of distinction.
Wherefore Hamilton College declares and appoints this person BACHELOR OF ARTS and by virtue of this diploma confers upon him the power to enjoy the rights and privileges unique to that title.
In witness whereof the trustees of this College have caused their seal and the signatures of the president and dean to be affixed at the foot of this document.

    David Wippman President

    Ngonidzashe
Munemo Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

Bestowed in the chambers of the College on the 19th day of May, 2024, the 212th year of the College.
For those who have done exceptionally well, the diploma reads BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH THE HIGHEST DISTINCTION (summa cum laude), BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH GREAT DISTINCTION (magna cum laude), or BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH DISTINCTION (cum laude).
Diplomas will be mailed to each senior who completes the requirements for the bachelor’s degree and should arrive in four to six weeks.
          WELCOME
Welcome to Hamilton College’s Commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2024.
Hamilton College was chartered by the Regents of the State of New York in 1812. The first formal Commencement ceremony was held in 1815 for six seniors, although two students who had transferred to Hamilton became the College’s first graduates a year earlier. In 1816, 17 students received their diplomas, representing the first graduating class to attend Hamilton for four years.
For about 70 years starting in 1815, every senior spoke at Commencement, a ceremony that lasted all day and was held in the church on the southern end of the Clinton Village Green. As reported in On the Hill: A Bicentennial History of Hamilton College, most of the students who attended Hamilton in its early years were from Oneida County and elsewhere in New York, with the rest coming from New England, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
We congratulate the graduates and are delighted to welcome their families and friends from around the country and the world to the College’s 212th Commencement ceremony.

          DOCTOR OF LAWS
          Doug Jones
Presented by Lea Haber Kuck ’87, P’24, Charter Trustee In 2017, Doug Jones won a special election to fill the vacated seat of Jeff Sessions and became the first Democrat in 25 years to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate. He subsequently earned praise from his fellow lawmakers for his bipartisan commitment to finding common ground on difficult issues. An attorney, Jones served earlier as staff counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, in private practice, and as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, during which time he successfully prosecuted two former Klansmen responsible for the 1963 racially motivated bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four young Black girls. His book, Bending Toward Justice: The Birmingham Church Bombing that Changed the Course of Civil Rights, is based on that landmark prosecution. He is currently a distinguished senior fellow with The Center for American Progress, a commentator for CNN, and an attorney for ArentFox Schiff.

          DAVID G. BAILEY
Dave Bailey is the Winslow Chair of Modern Science and professor of geosciences. His current research focuses on the history of igneous and tectonic activity in the northeastern United States and the mineralogy of New York State. The recipient of National Science Foundation ILI and CCLI grants and a research associate of the New York State Museum, he has twice served as president of the New York State Geological Association. Bailey has written numerous peer-reviewed papers, conference abstracts, and field trip guides. Before joining the faculty in 1990, he earned his doctorate at Washington State University, master’s degree at Dalhousie University, and bachelor’s degree at Bates College. Throughout his years at Hamilton, he has served as a Miami Posse mentor, chair of the Geosciences Department and Geoarchaeology Program, and on several committees. He is the recipient of both the Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching (2020) and the Dean’s Scholarship Achievement Award (Notable Year, 2013).
          DEBRA L. BOUTIN
Debra Boutin, the Samuel F. Pratt Professor of Mathematics, joined the faculty in 1999 and studies graph theory, geometric graph theory, and group theory. In particular, she works with graphs, their drawings, and their symmetry groups. She has presented at many professional conferences and written numerous articles for publication in competitive research journals, in addition to a dozen classified papers that resulted from work with the Institute for Defense Analysis. Boutin, who served as a chief petty officer for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve from 1975 to 1995, holds a doctorate from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She has earned two Dean’s Scholarship Achievement Awards (Early Career Achievement, 2008, and Career Achievement, 2023), and has participated on several College committees, including terms as faculty chair and chair of the Campus Planning Committee. Boutin also has served as a dedicated mentor to many junior professors during her time on College Hill.
          HERMAN K. LEHMAN
Having joined the faculty in 1996, Professor of Biology Herm Lehman focuses on the development and function of neurotransmitters. His research, which has involved dozens of students and been published in several professional journals throughout the years, has resulted in the identification, characterization, and functional delineation of a novel group of monoxygenases structurally similar to dopamine and tyramine B-hydroxylase. He has also conducted extensive analysis of traumatic brain injury on learning and memory. Lehman holds a doctorate from Florida State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida. His list of service to Hamilton includes time as a Miami Posse mentor, director of the Senior Fellowship Program and the Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Public Health and Well-Being Program, and chair of the Biology Department and Neuroscience Program. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he volunteered as a contact tracer for Oneida County.

Bill Salzillo, the Kevin W. Kennedy Professor of Art, began teaching on College Hill at Kirkland College in 1973 and joined the Hamilton faculty in 1978 when the colleges merged. A painter and printmaker, he was founding director of Hamilton’s former Emerson Gallery, serving from 1982 to 1992. His work has received numerous prizes and been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the world, from the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) centennial exhibition in New York, to the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, to national exhibitions of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, to name a few. His most recent pieces explore the landscapes of California and the American Southwest and Italy. Salzillo, who has served as chair of the Art Department, holds a master’s degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art and bachelor’s degrees from Rhode Island School of Design and Middlebury College.
          DAVID WIPPMAN
David Wippman joined the faculty in 2016, the same year he was named Hamilton’s 20th president. A recognized authority in international law, he has taught public international law, international criminal law, international human rights, and ethnic conflict. He received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, his master’s degree from Yale University, and his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. After practicing law for nine years in Washington, D.C., he became professor and associate dean at Cornell Law School and vice provost for international relations at Cornell University. Wippman took a year away from Cornell to serve as a director in the National Security Council’s Office of Multilateral and Humanitarian Affairs, where he worked on war crimes issues, the International Criminal Court, economic sanctions, and U.N. political issues. In 2008, he was named dean of the University of Minnesota Law School. He has co-authored several books, including International Law: Norms, Actors, Process: A Problem-Oriented Approach and Can Might Make Rights?: Building the Rule of Law After Military Interventions. In 2019, he was named to the Advisory Council of Refugees International.

        THE COLLEGE SEAL
Among the first tasks of Hamilton’s original Board of Trustees in 1812 was to create a College seal that called for “the emblematical figure of a Celestial Being or angel, raising a veil from the vision of a pupil or novitiate.” The angel’s other hand rests on the “Book of Knowledge,” pointing to the Latin Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). The College’s motto, Know Thyself, appears above the figures in Greek.
          THE SENIOR CANES
The senior cane is awarded to each graduate and is intended to serve as a tangible reminder of the Hamilton experience and as a token of the College’s affection. The head of the cane forms a Continental tricorne hat in honor of Baron von Steuben, who served as drillmaster of Washington’s Continental Army and who laid the cornerstone of the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1794. Funding for the canes is provided by the Lee H. Bristol, Jr. ’45 Canes Fund, established by his wife, Louise Bristol, in memory of her husband.
          THE FLAGS
The flags on the Commencement stage symbolize the diversity of the campus community. In addition to the flags representing the United States of America, the Oneida Nation, and Hamilton College, others represent the countries of students in the graduating class, as determined by those studying at Hamilton on student visas and flags of countries requested by our graduates.
          THE GREEN APPLE PINS
Kirkland College was founded as a women’s college in 1968, and until it merged with Hamilton a decade later, it offered alternative educational opportunities for both women and men on the Hill. Built on an apple orchard, Kirkland College took the green apple as its emblem.
