The Hamilton and Alexandra College is a regional, independent, co-educational day and boarding school for Early Learning to Year 12 students.

In 2023, we purchased a property in Mirranatwa at the base of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, just 40 minutes from Hamilton. This location provides a flexible, outdoor learning facility where students are immersed in the natural environment.

We have a comprehensive pastoral care program in place that provides support, help and guidance throughout students’ time at College. Each student is assigned a mentor, a key member of staff, who will know them, their interests, goals, areas for development students overall wellbeing.
The Pastoral Care system at College is
made up of four Houses – Berry (red), Laidlaw (blue), Learmonth (gold) and Young (green).
Your House becomes your school family, with House and mentor meetings starting each school day.
The Heads of House and Heads of Middle Years and Year 12 also work together to ensure that all students are given continued support, working closely with their mentor as well as the wider pastoral care team, including the school nurse, counsellor and Deputy Principal.
The Head of Junior School works with year level teachers and Heads of House to ensure continuity of pastoral care for students in the Junior School.

The Early Years program is inspired by the philosophy of Reggio Emilia, where each child is considered to be strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge.
The ELC play-based program invites children to be involved in a wide range of indoor or outdoor experiences, which aim to develop their curiosity and a love of learning. Activities are flexible and open-ended.

JUNIOR SCHOOL
The Junior School curriculum is designed to build a strong base for life-long learning.
The classroom program is focused on developing a solid foundation in the competencies of literacy and numeracy. Students are assisted with the provision of extension, enrichment and support as required for their learning.
An appreciation of tradition, culture, self-expression, personal identity and communication is fostered through the specialist program. Specialist subjects are delivered by teachers with expertise in their area of the curriculum, including Art, Physical Education, Music, Mandarin Chinese and Drama.
TRANSITION YEAR
Year 6 students also participate in a transition program, accessing specialist lessons in Music, Science and Chinese at the Senior School.
This year-long program supports their successful transition to secondary schooling, exploring new subjects and engaging with Senior School students and teachers.

We want to be providing a rich offering. An important part of that offering is opportunities for our high achieving students who are looking for extension and enrichment. Our programs are designed to stimulate and challenge and have a strong focus on developing students’ creativity, collaboration and confidence.

As a non-selective school, our classes are made up of a wide range of learners. EMERGE: YEAR 10 - 12
The Emerge years are designed to ensure exceptional student futures by recognising that senior students are young adults ready to take responsibility for their own learning. Emphasising choice and agency, the three-year Emerge program focuses on remarkable learning outcomes, student leadership development, and a variety of educational pathways.
In Year 10, the core curriculum (English, Maths, Science, PE, and Health and
Wellbeing) is complemented by an additional 25 periods chosen from diverse subject offerings, including VET courses and Unit 1 and 2 subjects. Our senior staff work closely with students, their mentors, and parents/guardians to help them select the best course of study. Through consultation with career teachers, conversations with subject teachers, and careful review of student reports, we assist each student in determining their Emerge learning program.

We offer a range of programs run by organisations such as the APSMO, ICAS and the CSIRO. These programs have a strong evidence base and allow our students to compare themselves to the best of the best from across educational sectors.
Junior School students have the opportunity to participate in various prestigious competitions, including the ICAS (an international competition involving 16,000 schools from 41 countries), the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad, the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, and events organised by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. In the Junior Division of the Maths Olympiad, our Year 6 students tackle challenges at a Year 7-8 level.

SLEEP, NUTRITION, EXERCISE
To be the best version of yourself, a positive focus on sleep, nutrition and the right amount of exercise is vital. We enforce strict sleep times which are staggered across age groups. This is because we know that sleep is key to learning and wellbeing. Trained chefs prepare quality meals and cater for individual dietary needs. Boarders are encouraged to join an organised sport through school and in the community.
SUPPORT AND CARE
Dedicated boarding staff are trained to care for boarders and contribute to their academic, social, co-curricular and pastoral care. Academic staff members supervise study sessions during the week, so boarders receive additional help when they are doing their homework. House Parents are dedicated to Year 7 and 8 boarders and deliver a Life Skills program. The College nurse is available to care for boarders when they are unwell and the College counsellor is onsite each week.
CAMPS AND EXPERIENCES
Our students learn valuable life skills through participating in age-appropriate outdoor education experiences during their time at College. Our camps are a significant part of our school culture – a time for students to bond together, step outside their comfort zones, test resilience and learn new skills.
YEAR 6 - CANBERRA
Experiencing the capital of Australia and its many attractions is a wonderful experience for the final year of Junior School. Students learn about Australia’s parliamentary system, visiting the AIS and the Australian War Memorial.
YEAR 9 - EXPERIENCE
Programs includes a two-day Grampians Retreat, a week in Melbourne and 19 days in Vietnam. This is a full year of experiences that encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones in many different situations and environments and participate in service work.
YEARS 1 - 5
One-night camps for students in Year 1, build to three-day outdoor education camping programs for Year 5 students.
YEAR 5 - SOVEREIGN HILL
Year 5 students take part in the Costumed School Program at Sovereign Hill, in Ballarat. This is a unique three-day, fully immersive, costumed school experience.
YEAR 7 - GLENELG RIVER
The four-day canoeing trip is the concluding journey following the study of Outdoor Education as part of the Engage curriculum. Students camp in tents and cook on trangias.
YEAR 10 - CENTRAL AUS
The Central Australia Experience is an optional eight-day adventure through the centre of Australia. This is a challenging and rewarding program of cultural immersion, service opportunities, and the chance to experience the spectacular Central Australian landscape.
YEAR 8 - MITTAGUNDI
The week-long Mittagundi expedition and base camp in the Victorian High Country involves snow camping, skiing, pioneer skills and outdoor challenges.
YEAR 12 - RETREAT
This three-day retreat in a tertiary environment is a great team building, goal setting and preparation time for the year ahead. The retreat is held at Deakin University to give Year 12s exposure to a university setting.

Supporting College’s offering, Greater Hamilton hosts a range of sporting, physical education and outdoor education opportunities available to students.
The Schools’ outdoor education programs discover the great outdoors with Grampians National Park, the
Great Ocean Road and Naracoorte Caves right on our doorstep. These vast landscapes offer endless opportunities to explore and learn, including at the world heritage-listed Budj Bim cultural landscape and Grampians National Park.

A weekly bus service is provided from Naracoorte (South Australia) to Hamilton (Victoria), departing SA on Sunday afternoon at 4pm and returning after school on Friday, making stops at Penola and Wando Vale.
An externally operated bus provides access to College from Dimboola, Horsham, Charam, Harrow and Balmoral on a weekly bus (dependent on seat availability).
This transportation offering allows students from Year 7 to Year 12 to access the College’s academic and co-curricular opportunities during the week while maintaining strong familial connections on the weekends.
In our ongoing efforts to serve the broader region, we are exploring the possibility of an additional service from Mt Gambier, subject to student demand. This potential expansion aligns with our mission to nurture locally so that students can excel globally.
DAILY BUS
College buses travel from Portland, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, and Mortlake directly to Junior and Senior school. Regional students also catch local Government buses, which requires a transfer at the Baimbridge College bus exchange.
A teacher supervises the transfer procedure early in the year until routines are established, as well as overseeing the bus boarding each afternoon at both the Junior and Senior Campus.

It is possible to utilise a College or Government bus on an ad hoc basis, however travel approval depends on bus capacity. Students and parents/ guardians can request a casual bus pass from Reception at the Junior or Senior School.

At College we pride ourselves on attracting the best and brightest students to our school.
Academic Scholarships are awarded on demonstrated performance in the examination administered by Edutest and supporting documentation e.g. school reports, external competition reports, NAPLAN results.
All students who are short listed for an Academic Scholarship will be invited for an interview to discuss and explore their academic interests, their approach to learning and how they will contribute to the strong learning culture at College.
TOWER SCHOLARSHIP
Years 4 -12
College promotes opportunities for students of excellent character to make a significant contribution to the life of the College and beyond as confident citizens.
For all Tower Scholarships, families will be required to demonstrate that their present and likely future financial circumstances would not allow them to finance their children’s attendance at The Hamilton and Alexandra College.
Families will be asked to complete a confidential financial questionnaire. This would include copies of recent taxation returns, statement of assets and liabilities and a Statutory Declaration attesting to their financial position.
In assessing each application, weight is given to the range of a student’s achievements.

College has a long history of supporting regional and rural families to access an independent education. We understand that the tyranny of distance can limit access to quality education, and Ivy Scholarships are available for students who would like to join the Boarding House community.

This would include copies of recent taxation returns, statement of assets and liabilities and a Statutory Declaration attesting to their financial position.
In assessing each application, weight is given to the range of a student’s achievements.
The bursary will be tenable until the student has completed their secondary education.
BOARDING BURSARY
Years 7 - 8
Dedicated boarding staff work closely with the teaching staff to ensure boarders fulfil their potential and achieve ‘personal best’ learning and wellbeing outcomes. Year 7 and 8 boarders are closely supported by dedicated House Parents.
Boarding offers an amazing array of opportunities and facilities that may not be available to children at home.
However, the benefits of a boarding school are not limited to the boarding students themselves. The positives that boarders bring to a school community are significant.
The College Board acknowledges the important role that our boarding program plays across the whole school and has endorsed 100% boarding bursaries for any Year 7 child intent on boarding at College for six years.
Furthermore, Year 8 boarders are entitled to receive a 100% bursary off their boarding fees if their family residence is more than 100km from Hamilton.
