The development of Smithfield Market and the continued growth of the cotton industry helped to foster economic activity in the Northern Quarter. - The area attracts different types of groups locals, tourists and workers. - The area is famous for its creative community.

Challenges
- Providing a building that serves all group types, brings people together regardless of their age group, gender identity, classes, locals or tourists. - Designing a place where Quarter's community work could be displayed.

WEAKNESS
-The location is bustling with bars, shops, busy restaurants and some of the city's liveliest music venues, as well as hotels and commercial buildings, so traffic is often busy. - The site is well connected by transport located in between the two biggest train stations in Manchester, Victoria and Piccadilly. - The site is well accessed on all sides . - Designing a building that could be recognizable in this busy area .

The women's shelter and rescue home was designed to provide non-institutional support for women and specifically for domestic servants, thought to be at risk, in the industrial district of Ancoats. There was both temporary and semi-permanent residential accommodation, training and recreational facilities, notably a ground floor coffee tavern, providing an alcohol-free was a mission centre for the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which recognised the need for a 24 hour refuge for women in addition to the permanent rescue home established by the church.

Major changes How is the building defined and identified ?
The interior of the building was altered and the original plan form was disrupted by the removal of some internal partitions. The former ground floor shop frontage is now blocked up, but retaining decorative tile work to stall risers and tiled canopy above. The building has now become residential. The bulding is identifid by its location.Located within the popular Northern Quarter the location is busy with vibrant nightlife,bars, restaurants and local shops. The building is located The building is located near to a connector road which has an important role in making sure people can access city center by walking and cycling, it also has a role to play in supporting the movement of buses
