Welcome to a special issue of Professional Hairdresser – one in which we are proud to bring you the fruits of a labour of love that has been long in the planning and thanks to co-projecting with LWPR (shout out to @laura_lwpr and @lwprteam), we finally managed to get five of the UK’s top hairdressers together round a table in their hometown of Barnsley for a good old chinwag! It was a very special day and when you read the interview on page 12, I think you’ll agree there is something rather unique about this unexpected hairdressing crew. During our conversation, the guys spoke a lot about recruitment and apprenticeships and this happens to coincide with a series of business articles also in this issue that look at various aspects of recruiting in hairdressing… In the first article on page 32, Caroline Sanderson suggests you need to look for people who share your values and will support you in achieving your goals. In the second article on page 33, Phil Smith thinks going back to basics and targeting school leavers will lead to loyalty and longevity and finally on page 34, Sean Dawson insists that it’s important to get the right balance of hairdressing types. Are we heading for a recruitment crisis? The sands are definitely shifting in these strange times…

THE LATEST FROM THE INDUSTRY

In memory of Janet

KAO Salon Division welcomes new President, Dominic Pratt, who will lead Goldwell, KMS, Oribe and VARIS brands worldwide.

Thousands raised in memory of hairdressing hero goes to charitable causes. Local and national charities are benefitting from donations made to honour the life of hairdressing legend Janet Maitland, owner of Janet Maitland Hair Excellence who passed away earlier this year. In the eight months since Janet’s death, a wave of family, friends, clients and colleagues have contributed to a fund that has reached an amazing £5,000. Janet’s legacy is gifting support to local, national and international charitable organisations in support of people and pets. One local beneficiary is Stray Aid, chosen because Janet was a huge lover and supporter of

the organisation who provide homes and shelter for dogs. At the beginning of the year Janet and husband Peter McDermott adopted their dog Molly. Molly quickly became a huge part of their lives and is a great companion for Peter. Two national charities, The Hairdressers’ Charity and Marie Curie are also beneficiaries of the fund. The Hairdressers’ Charity, linked to Janet’s life-long career of hairdressing received a donation which will help to make a huge difference to support colleagues in the industry who are financially struggling or in crisis. The gift to Marie Curie supports them in their continued and incredible work of support and care and is another charity that Janet supported during her lifetime. Janet’s husband, Peter McDermott says, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their wonderful generosity and kindness. We are thrilled that the money is able to go to such worthy causes, Janet would be so pleased. We would like to send a huge heartfelt thank you for everyone’s continued support, kindness and love over what has been a very difficult time.” If you would like to make a donation please visit: WWW.RDR.LINK/HD001

NOT JUST A HAIRCU T

HAIRCUTS 4 HOMELESS ANNOUNCES CELEBRITY HAIRDRESSER ADAM REED AS NEW TRUSTEE. Haircuts 4 Homeless is a charity set up by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts to provide haircuts free of charge to homeless people. Homeless people have many challenges to face, one of them often being a low self-esteem. A haircut can have a great effect on someone, giving them a real boost. It’s often way down on a homeless person’s priorities with a lack of money so the service proves to be very popular. Having been involved in the past, Adam Reed will certainly be a proactive member of the Haircuts 4 Homeless family in the future. Commenting on his new position, Adam said: “There are honours and there are

honours – honours for what you have done, honours for what people think you’ve done and honours for what people hope you will do. Today I received an honour from someone who deserves an honour. It’s the tireless, generous, giant of a man who is Stewart Roberts – founder of Haircuts 4 Homeless. Stewart who goes out there with his team, gets on with it and gets enough satisfaction and joy from doing what he does on a daily basis that he goes out there and does it all over again and again and again. Stewart who brings light in what could only be deemed as pretty dismal lives. He’s highly regarded, respected and what’s more is welcomed at homeless refuges throughout the country. Stewart thank you for making me your Trustee – I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do. It may be “just a haircut”, but it’s the kindness shown that makes a homeless person know that people really care.”

ADMIRABLE ACTION Action for Children youngsters graduate with Level 1 Award thanks to Rainbow Room International.

As we mentioned back in the pages of our June issue, Rainbow Room International were teaming up with charity Action for Children for some two-way training. After an intense eight-week programme including time spent with the Scottish salon group, combining theory, practical and work experience elements, the young people at Action for Children have successfully graduated with a Level 1 Award; Introduction to Hairdressing and Barbering. The Rainbow Room International and Action for Children partnership came about when Leigh Kerr, Academy Director at Rainbow Room International, was researching mental health training for the Rainbow Room International team. Action for Children reached out as they were looking for barbering training for their young people to give them life and work experience and at the same time also to improve their confidence and wellbeing. The partnership was a match made in heaven; in return for Rainbow Room International providing the youngsters at Action for Children with the Level 1 Award, the Action for Children team would provide Rainbow Room International’s Director’s, management and salon teams with training sessions focussed around First Aid for Mental Health and ‘Ask Tell Save a Life’ training. To celebrate the success of the partnership and the youngsters, Action for Children arranged a Graduation Day, held at Glasgow’s award-winning seafood restaurant, The Finnieston. The day started with teas, coffees and networking before Paul Carberry, Action for Children Director, welcomed everyone to the event before discussing the partnership, how delighted he was with the Action for Children team for everything they had done to make the partnership a success, how proud he was of the youngsters for their commitment and also sharing his thanks to the Rainbow Room International team for the invaluable training and support they had provided throughout the eight weeks.

In 1993 the Fellowship launched a platform for young people in the industry, offering opportunities not seen anywhere else with the aim to build their skills, knowledge, confidence and profile. The Fellowship Academy for Merit and Excellence – the F.A.M.E team – was born. Since then, some 118 stylists have passed through the one-year long programme – many of whom have gone on to be household names within the industry. A look back at the industry alumni is like a who’s who of hairdressing icons today. Zoe Irwin, Adam Reed, Lisa Shepherd and so many others started their careers as part of the F.A.M.E team. From session stylists Kathryn Dartnell and Paul Merrit, to industry ambassadors Errol Douglas and celebrity hairdresser Chris Appleton, they have all passed through the F.A.M.E team’s illustrious doors. “The F.A.M.E team was created to spotlight and champion young people in the industry,” explains current President Ken Picton. “They enjoy a fulfilling and busy year-long mentoring programme unlike any other, they learn to work as a team and support each other and build relationships that they will take throughout their career. Many past members are now some of the industry’s biggest mentors themselves.” Award-winning Gary Hooker and Michael Young are the current F.A.M.E team leaders. “We’re delighted to be the leaders of the F.A.M.E team for 2021 - we’re always up for a challenge and this year has thrown us more than ever!” says Gary. “But, there are so many opportunities that have come from this and with this incredible team, there’s never a dull moment. There have been some incredible members of the FAME team over the years and it’s a great legacy for the industry.

Fame and Good Fortune As the Fellowship for British Hairdressing celebrates its 75th Anniversary, we take a look back at one of the biggest successes of those 75 years – The F.A.M.E Team….

I was part of the 2010 F.A.M.E team and it was a dream of mine to be part of it. There were such incredible names I looked up to which were previous F.A.M.E team members that I could see what how it had helped them achieve their success. When I become a team member, it really opened my eyes to what was possible in this amazing industry. The biggest memory for me was being mentored by Errol Douglas and Bruno Marc, they took me under their wing and helped me grow. I learnt so many new skills and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. It’s an experience I will never forget.”

Jake Unger “As part of the 2013 team, I was at the start of my hairdressing journey with the HOB Creative team. It was the perfect time to be involved with the FAME team as I could evolve my skill set

as an educator and platform artist. I auditioned the previous year before getting into the F.A.M.E team and it’s experiences like that that really help to motivate you and an opportunity to learn, rather than taking it for granted. We did some great shoots, shows, and events, from going on a cruise to fashion week. But I suppose I enjoyed mainly the fact of spending time with industry icons and seeing them work up close and personal, from people like Bruce Masefield, Richard Ashforth and Gary Gill. Everyone is different and it was an opportunity to understand different people and different brands.”

“I was in the F.A.M.E team in 2009, alongside Kathryn Dartnell, Chris Appleton and Indira Schauwecker. I had seen how it had changed peoples careers and the icons in my industry had all been part of the team before. I don’t think I’d be where I am today without the F.A.M.E team, it was a huge learning curve, not easy – it was hard work, you have to put in the time and effort but the rewards are incredible. Everyone from my team has gone on to do the most amazing things. We had so much fun, I jumped out of a plane with my team which has to be a highlight! It helped my weaknesses and made me realise what I was good at.”

I was the salon manager at the Charles Worthington salon and was in the first ever F.A.M.E team in 1993! I wanted to progress my creative and stage career in hairdressing and it was an opportunity to be part of something brand new in the industry. As we were the first team for the Fellowship, the excitement around it was incredible and we did a shoot and a few shows together and loved being together on stage and learning together. It’s so wonderful to see how the F.A.M.E team has grown and what they do now, but to be in the first team was very special. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN

TOWN

Pro Hair’s Editor Nicola Shannon headed up the M1 to meet a very special group of hairdressers and to discover how one northern town has produced such a wealth of talent…

THE BARNSLEY BOYS Andrew Barton, Robert Eaton, Chris Moody, Simon Shaw and Josh Wood. First off Josh Wood gives us a potted intro to Barnsley.. “It’s a historical mining town surrounded by beautiful countryside: the Lake District, Yorkshire Moors and Snake Passage to Manchester. It’s the oldest market charter in the UK and was the first town to be given this. Because of its geographical location it has a long history of traders. It’s built on a past of hard work and ingenuity.

Robert Eaton

Nicola: What is it about Barnsley and why is it that you think this town has produced some of the biggest names in hairdressing? Chris: I think it has something to do with the relative hardships of growing up in kind of a distant northern town, in so much as, everything you do to make anything happen you have to work that bit harder, seek it out. I think for me, and I think Andrew will probably relate to this, growing up in the early eighties and being a male hairdresser wasn’t an easy journey in this area because there were a lot of stereotypes about what you ‘should’ do as a young lad. So, I think you probably had to strive that little bit more and work that little bit harder and perhaps that is what gave you a little bit more drive and focus. Rob: I think as well, obviously now everything is so much more accessible, when we started hairdressing it was a way away from that, so it was a case of being decisive and getting a train to go to London... making the effort to go and see things, to network with people, whereas now it’s different as everything is accessible everywhere and to everyone. You can get anywhere in the country, even the world, and you feel you know someone a bit more as you’ve seen their lives on social media. Whereas, certainly in the early days of my career. I was very much going down to London on the train and watching my hairdressing icons, learning from them. Simon: I think it’s a bit of an enigma, as I don’t think there is any secret potion that us Barnsley boys took. I just think I’m looking around the table at five or six winners, the people who had a desire, and all of us sitting around this table made that decision that this wasn’t good enough and we wanted to take our careers further. Josh: Yes, I think also we can’t lose sight of the fact that in the early eighties it was a very prosperous economy. The miners earned a fortune, most of them were married, and there was a hospitality and a night life scene like you have never, ever seen anything the like of it in all their

Chris Moody living days. So, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night everyone was getting dressed up to go out, they wentt out early and they stayed out late. People wanted to look different every night of the week, there were braids, fishtails, tonging, blow drying whatever it was, so there was really a demand for hairdressing and a demand for the work. So, a prosperous economy and certainly I wanted to get out of that council flat I was living in, and there was no question I wouldn’t get out. I didn’t go to London, not until I moved there and the first time I went to London I went on the bus, because I couldn’t afford the train. Andrew: I think Josh is right, I came similarly from a council estate and a working class family. There was never much money in the family, my father died when I was fifteen and then I got an apprenticeship. My mum said ‘if you are going to do hairdressing you need to get a proper apprenticeship’ and it turned out Chris and Stephen’s mum was the only person in Barnsley still doing traditional apprenticeships. So, I paid her, well my mum paid a bond for me to train, and I’m forever grateful, because it was tough as an apprentice but she pushed me and drove me to believe there was opportunity. So, for me it’s not necessarily about Barnsley it’s about the nurture I had here in Barnsley as an apprentice. Josh: I had the opposite, I couldn’t get an apprenticeship so I ended up on the Youth Training Scheme. My mum was a single mum, my dad had died when I was five, so we were a single parent family. I couldn’t find an apprenticeship. So I got on the Youth Training Scheme, and after the year, I was working at Lesley Francis and they said that they didn’t think hairdressing was for me and that they weren’t going to keep me on.

in education. It’s our 60th year this year, we opened in 1961 and we celebrate this year and still education is driving everything we do, education’s all I do now, Dimensions had an amazing national training scheme with Lesley Francis, Russell and Rob and what they do with education and Andrew with his ABLE stuff – so maybe it is the fact that we all come from places where education was just paramount. Andrew: You and I were presenting education for international manufacturer, Redken, at 19! In wholesalers’ warehouses, we were young boys and we were up on platforms and stages, so for you and I, I definitely think that training has been part of our whole career, and that has also created more aspiration. Rob: I think the thing is in Barnsley, people haven’t really been competing with each other as such, so there’s always been a great relationship, that’s my experience with it. We still send our apprentices to Lesley Francis. In some towns, there are lots salons that are like enemies, they don’t really work together or speak to each other….. Nicola: Is there anything you want to add about what was it like growing up here?

Andrew Barton

Simon: It was tough. When I look back at it and this is probably the same for anyone coming from any area, there are rough, harder areas in Barnsley like anywhere. Josh said about the night life being unbelievable in Wellington Street and it was like a strip in Vegas. People used to travel a long way to Barnsley, there were three or four night clubs in Barnsley – there is one just across the road from here. Andrew: I think Josh touched on it earlier, it’s that we all have that working class thread, where people wanted to party and dress up, feel glamorous with their hair and make-up. They worked hard and when they weren’t working they wanted to dress up and go out. It was very glamorous. Josh: The layer on top of this though, was also it was a big time of coming to terms with sexuality, it was virtually impossible to be gay in Barnsley in 1984... Andrew: Oh I got some action! Josh: Lucky for you mate. I wanted to look different and to be different and to feel different and that was not easy, but you know, I’m a tall bloke and I’m pretty tough, I could give it back as much as I got it really. There was a shop up the road called Pollyanna ran by an incredible woman called Rita Britain and I got really close to her and it opened my eyes that someone like me, who felt different, who didn’t fit in at all in this town, could find somewhere to fit. But, I am incredibly proud that I’m from Barnsley. It wasn’t easy and there are parts I didn’t like at all, but I’ll never not be proud of being a Barnsley lad.

Simon Shaw Chris: I remember you going to London and I remember you specifically aiming for Sassoon’s, and I even remember you saying words to the effect of ‘London here I come!’

Simon: There is only me who still sounds like he’s from Barnsley. I don’t know what’s happened to the rest of you! Josh: I was gone at 19... Andrew: When I went to London I purposefully tried to change my accent and then I did some TV work and they were keen for the regional accent and they encouraged me to keep it. Nicola: You’ve mentioned the nightlife, did it set its own fashion scene?

Josh: I was terrified! Chris: There were certainly places that attracted certain people. Simon: As you say we all come from these shops in Barnsley who have trained hundreds of hairdressers: Lesley Francis, Moody’s, Russell Eaton, Dimensions and they are still around and all of us have come from those backgrounds and they are still producing. Chris: I think you have hit on something there, really hard, because all of those salons are deeply embedded

Josh: There were tribes. Chris: There were certain pubs where certain people went, and depending on how you looked and how you dressed you went into these pubs, nothing would happen if you veered off, but people would stop and look...a bit like the scene from ‘American Werewolf in London’ when it goes really quiet and they miss the dart board and they all stare and look at you, that kind of thing.

Nicola: Aside from hairdressing what was your first ever job? Andrew: I was going to be a surface pattern designer, so I’d enrolled at Barnsley college and wanted to learn to design fabric, material, carpets, curtains, furniture… And in a way I still did become a fabric designer it was just a different fabric, hair. Chris: I was an 11 year old shampoo boy but when I left school my intention was to go to art college but I couldn’t decide which college to go to and my mum rather sneakily said why not work in the salon for a year until you’ve made up your mind, and 35-37 years later... Andrew: She was quite persuasive! Nicola: So all the hard work started in the salons then? That doesn’t necessarily happen today. Rob: Mine was a traditional apprenticeship, I went to Lesley Francis to do an NVQ whilst I was still at school, I did it after school so then then I was ready to start as soon as I left. Simon: I was placed on YTS at Dimensions and in one of their salons. On a Saturday you’d be neutralising 15 perms, just as a junior! Most of them were on guys having perms on the back of their heads...no hair on top!! Josh: I have to say bring on the perms and the neutralising! Having that work ethic I definitely learned here, mine has developed into harder work not easy work. It was also the emotional element of what we were going through, as Chris said, whatever one’s sexuality or gender it wasn’t easy to be a bloke in hairdressing in Barnsley. I mean it was probably a bit easier if you were in your own businesses. Simon: I got the nickname of Vidal. ‘Cos they were all working in pits and all wearing smart clothes, I used to play local football with them and you took some stick, it was tough, you know. Chris: You got Vidal, I got ‘Pink Rinse’! Simon: I think I won on that. Josh: In our day, what we went through at that stage, it wouldn’t be right for a young person of 17 now to go through that! It wasn’t right then really, but for me, starting my own business in 1999 and working in incredibly stressful situations, I wouldn’t have been able to cope with that without the background I come from, if my emotional ability to be strong hadn’t been kind of built

brick by brick at that stage. And I think that is a big difference to today’s world. Andrew: My apprenticeship here in Barnsley has absolutely been the foundation. And I sometimes find myself in a situation, something I find stressful, and my apprenticeship comes into my head and I still stand in front of the mirror and I see Steve and Chris’s mother’s flick of the wrist, and it shows how fundamentally it formed me, my apprenticeship. Rob: What I notice in Barnsley is the loyalty in the town – a lot of people in Barnsley are so happy when they see people doing well. It’s the clients and the people and the town want to see Barnsley people doing well. Josh: I had a terrible situation in lockdown whereby the Daily Mail said I had broken lock down rules. I was doing an actress’s hair, I had not done anything wrong, clean as a whistle. Daily Mail printed a front page story calling me all the names. I didn’t look at the Daily Mail.com comments, best not! It was interesting, I had to have lawyers as they got it all wrong, but one of my team said to me that there were two messages, two people from Barnsley, one from a YTS friend who I hadn’t seen for decades and another one saying come on lad, you’re alright don’t worry. There is a solidarity. We will not be judged. Nicola: What career path might you have chosen other than hairdressing? Simon: Looking back I might have done things a bit better sport-wise and looked after myself a bit better and gone down the football route. That’s the only career I would have done looking back. Josh: I might have been an architect but with the one and three quarter O’ Levels I had...that wasn’t possible. I have learned a new career, I am a businessman. I’m not formally educated at all, but today I’m building a business, our products are in 14 or 15 countries and you know, it’s challenging as I don’t have the nature, it’s not necessarily brain-power, but the learning. Andrew: For me it’s about diversity in my work. I spend one day a week behind the chair with clients, and I am as happy on that day as I am in the boardroom running a salon group of a thousand staff and 55 salons. And as Josh said with a product range as well, that was a really quick learn for me as it is 13 years since we launched now, and I had to learn about warehousing and distribution and all those things, at the beginning. I just thought it was about picking the fragrance and the colour of the packaging – it’s been a massive learning curve, but I wouldn’t change anything about what my career’s given me. Josh: I am not naturally wired that way, I have had to go to college again and learn things. I went on a year’s business course to be honest with you, to try to learn management accounts, I had to figure it out quick and I’m having a second wind in this long wonderful career I have had. Nicola: Do you have any surprising, hidden talents? Simon: I don’t know if mine is a hidden talent but I’m moving more, more in the next two to three years into presenting, so I think my career will eventually move into that, and unless I lose weight it’ll be radio!

012_PHR_SEPT21_Layout 1 18/08/2021 17:30 Page 17

Nicola: In any particular field? Simon: Umm, I think I wouldn’t mind go into acting at some point. Andrew: Corrie?? Simon: I wouldn’t say that but I have some things in the pipeline that I’ve been put forward for, I’ve always been a bit dramatic as you know! Andrew: For me, I guess it sounds a bit saintly and holy, but it’s the work I’m doing around charity, like the Little Princess Trust, collecting hair to have wigs made. I also work a lot with the British Association of Adoption and Fostering work, creating awareness around the need for fostering and adoption, so more time around that sector. Rob: Work is just such a big part of my life, hairdressing is such a big part of my life. It’s way of life rather than just a career. It feels everything. It’s a family business not just a job. Nicola: What would you consider the most rewarding part of your job? Andrew: For me it is just that every day is so different – shoot, boardroom, salon, teaching, so it’s the diversity. Josh: I love the day-to-day, I love running the business, I love my time behind the chair, and I feel proud as a colourist. I’ve just finished a couple of shows in Milan and Rome for Valentino and Dolce – when they think hair colour they think me, that is a pretty proud moment! Rob: For me is the variation of what we do that I love. That I can work in Barnsley every Wednesday and then Leeds managing the team, seeing who is coming through. I still love it as much as I always have, in fact I think even more so, I never have a day I think ‘ugh it’s work’, I feel positive. Simon: Shall I be cynical about this? I never imagined, as a welder’s lad from Barnsley, I would earn the money I earn first and foremost, and it’s really important we try to raise the profile. Everyone sitting round here has nice lifestyles, nice houses, cars and hairdressing and barbering has helped me to have that. I would never have dreamt that and it’s a really important part of it. Out of the job the thing I most like is that when I go into a room and you are there, and I’m teaching you and you’re better when I leave you. When you inspire someone to be better, it’s a fantastic feeling! Chris: I’ll latch onto what Simon said there, it was educators that really got me into hairdressing in the first place. I thought it was all blue rinses and perms and then I saw these educators and what they did, and it’s what I have dedicated 90% of my work to. Education transforms how people feel and transforms their lives. In this age of consumerism when everyone can buy anything and everything, what people are missing is a sense of self work, their mind-set is different. We have come out of the pandemic and people have lost their

confidence in themselves, and what we all do around this table is, through education, or hairdressing, we transform how people feel about themselves. We don’t just deal in hair, we deal in self-worth. It’s an amazing legacy and gift, we change lives. (Round of applause from the room!) Nicola: Is there anything you would change about the industry? Chris: Can I just jump in again? I think we have to start valuing ourselves, and taking pride in what we do and stop this mind-set – no one around this table has it – but it’s endemic in our industry. It is a mind-set of ‘I’m just a hairdresser’ and we’ve got to change this perception of hairdressing as something that’s a bottom rung of the ladder occupation. Josh: I uphold what you are saying and as an industry it’s hard. I am on the executive board of the British Beauty Council, representing the whole of British beauty, we have done a study of the economy of British beauty and as a whole, the economy is bigger than the car industry, but we don’t get the same representation in Government. There is no minister for culture and beauty. So yes, bottom up we have to fight to change what we need to change, to inspire people to come into the industry and this has to start at the top as well as the grass roots. £27.5b is taken as revenue in the beauty industry in the UK every year! Andrew: Josh is right, we need some form to protect our industry as professionals, and I have to say Professional Hairdresser has been so supportive of what I’ve been championing – the success of the salon-based hairdresser as well, because I believe as an industry certain parts of it have propelled session hairdressing as the ultimate career level. It is for some, but hairdressers also can earn a great income standing behind the chair, having a great life and earning a great income right here in their own towns living in their community, being part of the community. Chris: Exactly, that’s the engine that drives the industry at the end of the day! It’s the hairdressers working behind the chairs that goes and without that nothing else exists, so Andrew is 100% right. That’s the role that should be valued and aspired to. Rob: I think actually, when I think of salon life, hairdressers genuinely are happy people in their careers. It’s a happy environment where they make people look and feel great, as Chris was talking about earlier. I think it’s about getting people to recognise that as a career choice, it’s a career that has longevity as well as one where you can collectively create things that are really special together in the salon and I think that is getting a bit lost somewhere.

012_PHR_SEPT21_Layout 1 18/08/2021 17:30 Page 18

Andrew: That is one of the biggest challenges apart from session hairdressing being promoted as the ultimate, freelance hairdressing is now being promoted as the ultimate as well! So we are all faced with this challenge in business now when our teams have got access to all their clients data, they can contact their clients, they can see them at home and what COVID has done as well, is got people thinking they can work two or three days in the salon and I’ll have those clients and have cash in hand... Robert is right and what we are doing at Headmasters part of a three year campaign, is how do we really celebrate hairdressing as a career in a salon, and in a company, rather than being alone. Rob: I also think young people are looking on social media and thinking that sometimes you can become famous, busy and successful but you need that grounding, which we have all talked about. A grounding of a really solid apprenticeship in the salon is a platform for building a career, and then of course you can go off and do lots of other things, but the problem is that everything is wanted so fast now. Simon: I am glad we’ve gone around the table because if you’d asked me first, I was going to say the thing I don’t like about the industry is ‘egos’. If someone asks me who is your hairdressing hero, I’ll answer with people you may not even know, like Linda Joyce – she’s booked up for 6 weeks in advance, 15 clients a day, no one will have heard of her, a hero! When you go to shows, you meet guys who have got huge egos, they have done about 10 minutes training on barbering and 8 followers on Instagram and the f*****s come out and walk around as if they are God’s gift! Rob: It’s a bit like what happened with session styling making that sexy. You need the product houses and the trade magazines to focus on salons, a bit like some of them have with session styling, making it sexy and desirable. Josh: And I think that is, as an industry, where we stand. I can do 15 colours a day, I still do them, I’m like the f*****g old donkey I am – I go in there on a Tuesday and a Wednesday and I can do 20 colours. They look at me like ‘he’s a lunatic’, they want to do two colours a day, 15 strands of Balayage! I say crack on you have beans on toast for supper, I’m off out for dinner! Dare I say it maybe they have the right idea and I have the wrong idea in today’s world. Rob: Josh that is so true. Josh: I think they want the lifestyle but not necessarily the same hours. Rob: I hope the apprenticeship is protected and I hope it stays in this country and doesn’t get too diluted, because it is important that the next generation of hairdressers has the same grounding that we did and I hope it doesn’t change too much, as those full skills we have learned are essential and it is that which will follow through to the next generation. Chris: What Rob said there about this all-round thing, it’s great that people are specialising in niching, but as we all

well know with 30 odd years plus experience it will all change, and right now everyone is buzzing about perming hair and yet many salons don’t even own a perm rod. Let alone be able to put the things in. And I fully support what Robert said there, about protecting the apprenticeship and it’s one thing that worries me about standardisation and regulation – I’m not entirely sure that regulation and creativity can live in the same room. Creativity comes from breaking rules and the more rules we have, you know, maybe the less creativity we have. I think it has to be monitored really carefully. We talk about standardising our education, but we don’t talk about to what standard do we standardise it? We have a standardised education system right now, but it’s not compulsory, it’s not legally enforced but it exists and it’s likely that will be the one that’s adopted. We have to be really careful about protecting our autonomy and protecting our right to make mistakes because, maybe and I may get thrown out of the room, but maybe the reason the UK has constantly lead the world in creativity is perhaps that it is one territory where we have been allowed to break the rules more than anywhere else. Josh: It’s not so much for me about bending or breaking rules, it’s about quality. Chris: Yes, I agree. Josh: It is about consistent quality and through this comes confidence and then we can create rules. My challenge is that someone sets up next door to me and they haven’t done anything whatsoever, actually, it’s eroding the quality of our industry, then young people then don’t want to come into it, ‘cos they know they feel they can’t get to our level and earn what we earn.

012_PHR_SEPT21_Layout 1 18/08/2021 17:30 Page 19

Rob: I did something for Wella – we created live events it was really interesting being involved in that and how many people that actually reached. Although I miss actually seeing people’s reactions. Chris: For me the last time in front of people, actual physical people was January 2020 at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, probably about 2,500 people or so, but I’ve never stopped, from March, like Simon we picked up and went online. Josh: I’ve been working just now, I’ve been doing menswear, I do couture, I did a colour show – the first time I ever coloured hair remotely! So I had two people I used to work with at Sassoon’s both in Italy and I was in London, I was trying to help them and support them get the look. But yeah, I’ve just finished a load of shows, well not a load of shows, really as normally I would be booked for five or six, Prada in Sardinia, Valentino in Rome, Marc Jacobs in New York. Very odd. Simon: It’s nice that, ‘cos just when you think you are doing well, you hear Josh and realise there is a bit more to do actually!! Must do better...! Andrew: Yeah last live show, Pro Hair Live! Had the best time! Nicola: Which celebrity, model or influencer do you think helps to promote the industry best with his or her style? Chris: I think it’s Simon!

Chris: I agree with you it is about the level of consistency, but I just feel we have to be careful about how we go about regulating that quality. Josh: Regulation is the wrong word and that is what I’ve been saying on the British Beauty Council, it’s not regulation in any way shape or form, but there needs to be some recognition of quality of the craft and skill in the UK, as it’s different to anywhere else in the world, as we’ve always been pioneers and leaders, we should be leading in what recognition looks l like.

Simon: Easy one from a male grooming point of view and obviously I’m a hairdresser too, but working with WAHL, I thought about this one and over the last maybe two decades, there is one person who has done so much for the hair industry and has had so many different styles and has looked fantastic with every single one so it has to be David Beckham. He’s been the biggest icon, he’s influenced so many guys who come in and want his hair, from a mohawk to just two tramlines, he has been great, looks good and has done really well. No one has been copied as much as Beckham has. Rob: It’s more about influencers now isn’t it, there are so many out there inspiring clients now and hairdressers now.

Chris: Yes I think recognition is a better word

Nicola: When was the last time you appeared on a stage in front of a live audience? Or in front of a camera or backstage at a show?

Josh: It’s a spirit of change, I struggle with this as I don’t like the digital revolution that we are in, but we are in it and so I have to react to it. I think Gigi Hadid, Bella, Kaia Gerber, all of those girls that are in their early twenties and they do different things to themselves with their hair and it might be weaves or extensions and the client in the chair doesn’t necessarily understand that, but the genesis of change with those kind of girls is good because they move it on so it brings life blood into the creative. But no one particular person, I think it’s an age group of people.

Simon: Live show was yours – Pro Hair Live in February 2020 and then after that we have done stuff online but it doesn’t feel anything like working in front of 50 or 100 people at Pro Hair. That’s the last show I did, everything else has literally been virtual!

Chris: I think some people have a positive effect don’t they, in the same way you were saying about David Beckham Simon. I was happy when Billie Eilish posted pictures of her mid-transformation and she was quite

Rob: A lot of the stylist in our business who are the real money-takers are the ones who just quietly get on with it, they don’t mess about taking pictures, there are two in particular and I wish I had a salon full of them. Actually they are the ones who the clients are always happy with, they never get complaints, they aren’t thinking about what it’ll look like on Instagram, they are in the moment making sure they get it right for their clients and concentrate on what’s in front of them. They are the life-blood of salons.

happy to sit there with her hair not at its best saying ‘look this is what I’ve to do to go from green and black to whatever colour I’m going to next’. And I think that had a positive effect as it’s often that kind of young person who comes in that show these vivid colours. You’ll know Robert and Josh, these vivid transformations and colours that they want, and of course they don’t know that you don’t just take a bottle of green and put it on top of purple like paint. Josh: The only thing about that transformation, and I get involved in some of these, and they aren’t really transformational enough, and what I don’t like about that is that it represents to the customer there is an easy transformation, and it is much more challenging than that showed. Chris: Do you think she promoted that though, she did that by showing that it goes yellow first, do you think it was a good thing? Josh: But it wasn’t as straightforward as just yellow so there were a lot more factors that went into that, it minimised the many processes involved. It was a mainstream title, so it was a good thing, but there were lots of other factors that went into that. Chris: But it opened the door for a hairdresser to show it isn’t as straightforward and can take some time. and gives a hairdresser something to springboard from in terms of the conversation. Andrew: I am just thinking about the whole influencer thing and I think we are going through a really interesting time around influencers. Certainly at Headmasters we have had a focus on influencers over the past 10 years and we are now changing our strategy completely. We are also focussing on a much more local level, rather than international or national level, so most of our salons are in Surrey and are looking at influencers who mean something to our clients. We are more interested in getting to the influencers of the ladies’ golf club and we have already seen an impact with this relatively recent change of strategy over the past six months. Whereas the previous strategy didn’t really put bums on seats. We are

already seeing the benefit. Josh: It seems there is an anti-influencer feeling certainly amongst the big brands. Andrew: I think it goes back to this whole thing about celebrating the success of the salon-based hairdresser because what we are trying to do with our teams is get them to be the influencer. It’s them who are in the salon everyday giving this honest advice to their clients and taking them to the next step. And some of those old-fashioned elements we learned here in Barnsley it was about retailing products, rebooking, recommending other services is a massive initiative for us as we get our teams focussed on delivering the best standards for our clients. It comes back to word of mouth. Rob: Word of mouth is the best form of recommendation; nothing beats the clients who bring other clients on the same wavelength. Andrew: Clients giving feedback is a lot more influential than influencers giving feedback. It’s what drives new clients to us and that, my friends, is what we all want! The Barnsley Boys could have spoken for hours! It was fascinating to hear their stories and discover the threads that join them and this town together. Education, hard work and ambition shone through aside from what was obviously a room full of exceptional creativity and talent! There was so much mutual respect around the table and a bond that comes from being ‘Made in Barnsley’.

PEOPLE

IN SESSION WITH... WE CAUGHT UP WITH BABYLISS PRO BRAND AMBASSADOR SYD HAYES TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT HIS STAR-STUDDED CAREER.

BEGINNINGS Where did your career in hair begin? My dad is a hairdresser and has had a salon for 36 years. I started out originally at Nicky Clarke’s in Mayfair and that was incredible. I trained and qualified there and started doing photoshoots and assisting Nicky. At one point I was the youngest assistant to assist Nicky. Then I left and went to Hershesons and retrained slightly with Daniel and Luke. Next I went to work for Guido for three years as one of his assistants. That was amazing, that was when it really all ramped up. I packed a suitcase and left London and started living out of a hotel in New York. I was doing all the big fashion shows and photoshoots with him. We were away all the time going from LA to New York, London, Milan, Paris and back round again. That was really good fun and was such a cool vibe.

Favourite photographer? Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Best location you’ve ever worked in? A tiny little desert island off of Mozambique, Mnemba.

International session hairstylist Syd Hayes ranks among fashion’s most exciting talents, creating looks inspired by London’s youth-driven culture. Travelling the world with lots of suitcases doing hair in sometimes glamorous and sometimes gritty locations, he collaborates regularly with some of the most established and respected photographers in the industry. His work has been featured in Vogue, i-D, and Love, and for clients including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Missoni, and Givenchy to name a few. He’s also Brand Ambassador for BaByliss PRO.

LOCKDOWN As you’re normally so busy, how did you find the last year of lockdown? I am a bit of a workaholic because I love what I do, so it was actually a great and interesting time. Sometimes in life when you take a step back and you pause and reflect, it’s a really good thing. I am always on the go, always working and travelling, always have a million things going on and I work best like that. As a salon owner I had responsibilities of hairdressers and people that work for the company so I had to make sure that they were happy and knew as much as I did about what was going on with the situation and that kept me busy. I did lots of work for the brand, creating content for them and coming up with ideas for how we could engage the hairstylists that work with babyliss and how we could inspire them to create content. I did silly things, like I bleached my hair on camera…it enabled me to step back and enjoy life and think about what I would do when work starts again.

024_PHR_SEPT21_Layout 1 18/08/2021 16:11 Page 25

TOOLS... Favourite tool? BaByliss 9000 Cordless Waving Wand because I can use it literally anywhere from a beach to a skatepark.

How does BaByliss PRO fit into your work as a session stylist? I have to use hair tools. I have to use hair tools in my business, and being linked with a brand works really well because you support each other. They support me, and I help them with vision and creative guidance as well as feedback on products that are launching. Like all things, if you speak to the experts they often can help because it puts a different angle on it.

A brand you’d love to work with? My wife says Isabelle Marant because it’s her favourite brand. I think she just wants a discount. Who do you turn to for support? My wife and my dog, his name is Clive.

FUTURE ADVICE Any advice for hairdressers wanting to get into the session world? It’s a funny old business, the session world. It’s an amazing industry but a hard one to crack. I think the more experience and the more you work with others the better it is. So the more assisting that people do the better because then you get to work with the best in the business.

Best piece of advice you ever received? You’re only as good as your last job.

Where do you see your career going in the future? One of my big things at the moment is trying to inspire new youth and new culture and bring new hairdressers into the business. I really want to inspire new young people from school to come into this world because it’s an amazing career. You’re only as good as your team and I think that reflects in anything. I’ve got people in my team who are amazing and I want to inspire the younger lot coming through and get them to come and work with me and help because then it doesn’t get old and stale. I’ve got to a certain level that I’m happy with in my career and I don’t want that to go, but as you get older in life you start to look back and think about what you can give back to the industry to inspire others and you get positivity from that. I don’t think you get old then because you’re constantly around young people.

The Foreplay

(inspiration)

Thomas Hills

YES! The Shag is definitely something we’re seeing become more popular in the salon. I think a lot of it is as a result of lockdown and people wanting a more low-maintenance style. It’s really trending on TikTok right now, it’s super cool, easy and something really different. The “Wolf Cut” is definitely what the younger generation is calling it. It’s layered to various different lengths and feathered round the crown and fringe. Super textured and choppy. Older clients prefer a shorter, less dramatic look. KATE DRURY, MODE HAIR, CHIPPING CAMPDEN – NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Colin McAndrew

The Shag was also a huge hit on the A/W21 runways, especially at Isabel Marant and David Koma, where natural, textured shags took centre stage. The versatile style was also seen at Marni, teamed with micro fringes for an even bigger 70s vibe. There’s always a myriad of incarnations of this versatile style, but apart from the fact it’s low maintenance and easy to maintain, it’s great for boosting the volume and texture of short hair, and works well on most hair types. It also has a very retro appeal for all age groups, too, from Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez (whose curly Shag was styled to perfection) to one of the most iconic Shag styles – Debbie Harry’s platinum Shag – showcasing how this look can be modernised with a simple root stretch for some rock and roll or French-girl chic. THOMAS HILLS TH1

Casey Coleman

The Shag is a beautiful, unstructured haircut and it’s perfect for those with busy lifestyles. It works well with the majority of face shapes except round, and is best suited to those with some texture in the hair. It is a great shape to upsell colour as adding highlights will accentuate the shape. Billie Eilish wears it well and for those who want to keep a bit more length, the “Wolf Cut”, which has become a TikTok phenomenon is ideal. COLIN McANDREW, DIRECTOR, MEDUSA

Shags have been and are currently a big trend. With an increasing amount of requests from clients for the infamous shag, hairdressers are flocking to educators to learn all about how to create these super cool, textured locks. But beware, there is also a trend on how to cut your own Shag, or as they’re calling it on TikTok, the “Wolf Cut”. There are masses of people using the video based app showing how to cut one, all by putting your hair into a bobble at the top of the head and cutting it off…. So be prepared to fix some Shags too. With celebs like Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish rocking the trending haircut, it’s pretty impossible to not ask clients if they “fancy a shag”. HAIRDOTCOM’S CASEY COLEMAN

We had another question for our industry friends…is the ‘Shag’ really making a comeback? It was met with a resounding YES, so we’ve broken down their inspiration, cutting and styling tips for you to use when those clients come knocking.

The Main Event (cutting) The Shag is back with a vengeance which is brilliant news for hairdressers. It’s a great haircut to work on for clients who don’t want to lose all the extra length they grew during lockdowns, but are looking for something that is more fashion led, multi-layered, low maintenance and effortless. The AW21 Shag is soft through the perimeter, the fringe is full and eye skimming, while textured layers frame the face. We’re seeing more clients coming into the salon asking for a variation of the Shag – and the best news is it suits all hair types. It’s best to ditch the irons for this look and manipulate the natural texture of the hair for the most natural, effortless finish. COS SAKKAS Cos Sakkas Jack Merrick-Thirlway

The Shag is a great way to add texture, volume and movement to hair - a modernised take on the 70s classic. This haircut definitely looks better when worn with movement, a slight wave or even undefined curls. It’s a good way to offer something to those clients who love their long hair but want something new. The Shag could be a great way to introduce a different style without losing all of the length, do be careful though as lots of layers and texture are needed to be added, which as we all know will remove a bulk of weight from the ends, so be sure your client’s hair is the right density to go for the full Shag. JACK MERRICK-THIRLWAY, NEVILLE HAIR & BEAUTY

The Shag is definitely making a comeback this year and is one of the most on trend looks of the year. This hairstyle has a very lived in and natural feel and works best worn very relaxed with the client embracing their natural hair texture. When creating this look in the salon, we love to add some texture to the hair via layers, giving the hairstyle a choppy finish with some graduation to modernise the look. Adding a fringe to this look also looks particularly great, taking this a bit shorter to add shape and to give the hairstyle an edgier look and rock star inspired vibe. SUZIE MCGILL, RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL

We’ve seen a massive surge in client requests for the Shag in our London salon. So much so that our Artistic Director, Jamie Benny recently held a training evening dedicated to the Shag. The appeal is that it is a reasonably low maintenance cut that embraces the hair’s natural texture and is super stylish. When cut properly it frames the face beautifully and enhances the client’s features. Another reason we are seeing a spike in requests is that the mullet is a popular trend in the fashion world. Filtered down, the Shag offers a great commercial alternative for clients. SAM BURNETT, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, HARE & BONE

The Big Finish (styling) Mid-length hairstyles are incredibly on trend at the moment and the Shag hairstyle is one of the most on trend, mid-length styles that clients are requesting in the salon. Clients are looking for more effortless, low maintenance hairstyles this year and the Shag haircut is great, as it incorporates layers and texture into the cut that add texture and movement, allowing the hair to require little to no styling at home from the client. A matte styling product, mousse or texturising spray can simply be applied into the layers to give the style further volume and body and those serious ‘cool girl vibes’. CALLUM STANDEN-MAY, CO-OWNER OF STANDENMAY AND CREATIVE STYLIST AT BOND SHOREDITCH

I’m loving the fact that the Shag is making a comeback, more and more clients Emma Simmons are opting for this style, it’s so versatile and customisable that it suits most hair types. It’s perfect on wavy and curly textures, as well as medium to thick hair, as the layering technique really enhances natural movement and frames the face to accentuate features. It’s a soft feminine look that’s super easy to maintain, blow-dry with a round brush and volume products, diffuse or air dry. The Shag is super low maintenance and easy for clients to style at home. EMMA SIMMONS, SALON 54

Thomas Hills

Emma Simmons

For styling, the key is that this hairstyle looks undone and effortless. Mousses can be used and scrunched into the layers to add texture, volume and hold and finishing products such as volumising sprays like sea salt sprays can be used and scrunched into the hair whether it’s damp or dry to add further texture, enhance volume and add grit to the hair. Beware to not overdo it with the hair products, as you want the overall finish to still look very soft and natural and as though little to no product has been used. RECRUITMENT 1

MIND-SET & RECRUITMENT AWARD-WINNING SALON OWNER CAROLINE SANDERSON HEADS UP THE SALON JEDI COACHING ACADEMY. HER NEW BOOK, MIND-SET, MAGIC & MIRACLES IS SET TO PUBLISH IN LATE SUMMER. THIS MONTH CAROLINE TACKLES THAT AGE-OLD HEADACHE FOR SALON OWNERS – RECRUITMENT… CLARIFY YOUR VISION: Your vision for your salon needs to be incredibly strong, with a clear purpose and mission. Where do you want to be in 3-5 years time? Why do you want to be there and what’s your purpose? What are you going to do to help others, which, in turn will also help you achieve your goals? Who are you going to help (who’s your ideal clients) and whom do you need help from (who’s your ideal team)? Once you’re clear on this, creating a set of core values you can all align with will help you to make decisions and choices that align with your purpose and mission to help you reach your vision. Having a strong purpose and vision is important for a number of reasons, but it can be especially beneficial when it comes to your recruitment process, and anyone you hire should be aligned with your purpose. Having a different set of values to a team member doesn’t make either one wrong or a bad person, it just means this can cause conflict and hold you back from your mission. The clearer you are about your purpose and vision, the easier it will become to find other people who share your values and therefore support you on your journey to achieving your goals. You may fear that if you lose a staff member they might take all the customers with them, which would lead to losing money. Even if losing them does cause you pain in the short term, if they weren’t aligned with your values and weren’t working with you to achieve your salon vision, they would only have caused you greater pain in the long term. Get a marketing plan in place for any eventuality of the actions you will take if you do lose a team member. It’s crucial to do this and will give you greater confidence knowing you don’t need to feel the impact of a stylist leaving your business. It’s also important not to fear confrontation or communication so as to

not lose control of your salon business. Your mind-set plays a big part in this. When you have a growth mind-set with a firm purpose and vision, you’ll know exactly what you want and where you’re going. You’ll have the inner strength to deal with an issue caused by someone who doesn’t share your vision. A growth mind-set allows you to recognise when someone or something is going against your core values, giving you the strength to ensure you deal with the situation head on. Banishing fear helps you achieve your mission. This is a huge part of what I teach salon owners through my numerous courses. Success is 90% mind-set and 10% skillset, which is why I have dedicated 11 years to this work and share it so widely. It is so important I have even dedicated my second book (Mind-set Magic and Miracles) purely to mind-set and emotional intelligence. This is key to building a successful salon business and leading a high performing team.

FOCUS ON LONG-TERM GAIN: When we make decisions based on short-term gain, we’re looking for a quick fix. Within salons, it’s common to be short-staffed, but by focusing on short-term gain we make so many recruitment mistakes.

When you’re short-staffed, the short-term gain option is to hire someone based on skills alone to get them into the salon as quickly as possible. It may be that you even have a gut feeling they’re not the right fit for your salon, but you ignore the red flags to get away from the short-term pain of having a lack of staff. Hiring someone when in this state of mind will cost your business more money in the long run. The alternative is to endure the short-term pain for a little longer and accept you’re going to be short-staffed for a little while. Take the time to recruit someone who is the right fit for you and aligned with your values and you’ll create a better long-term future for your business.

BE PERSISTENT: Persistence is an important element of a growth mind-set. We can all get knocked off track from time to time, that’s life. It might throw you a curveball in your personal or work life, but the difference between someone with a growth mind-set and fixed mind-set is how you deal with those curveballs. Be persistent and look for solutions to problems rather than focusing on the problem itself. Research shows recruiting the wrong person can cost 6 figures on average through lost revenue, lack of productivity and even loss of business. So before you think of hiring someone who isn’t right for your business because you are short staffed and think you can’t afford not to…. ask yourself, can I afford to make a recruitment mistake and hire the wrong person? Listen to your gut and hire on values. Shout about who you are, your vision and purpose as a salon in your recruitment campaigns so you attract the right staff and repel the wrong. RECRUITMENT 2

FIT FOR BUSINESS

AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED NAMES IN THE HAIRDRESSING WORLD, PHIL SMITH HAS BUILT SALON EMPIRES, LAUNCHED MULTI-MILLION SELLING HAIRCARE RANGES AND WON COUNTLESS AWARDS FOR HIS BUSINESS ACUMEN. HERE, HE TACKLES YOUR TRICKY POST-PANDEMIC BUSINESS ISSUES... “I’m struggling to recruit good stylists. I find that most candidates either have unrealistic salary expectations or the wrong work ethic. How and where do I find good people. And how can I hang onto them?”

PHIL SAYS: “You are not on your own here. The recruitment picture in the hair industry has changed and at the moment it’s especially challenging. If you ask me, this is partly driven by the rise in self-employment. Latest statistics show that 54% of people who work in hairdressing and barbering are self-employed.* This figure has grown significantly. Add to that the fact that there are less people starting apprenticeships (a drop of 13%* according to latest research) you start to understand what’s fuelling the problem. It wouldn’t be overly dramatic to suggest that there is ‘a recruitment crisis’. As well as a shortage of people, as salon owners we are completing for staff with the right skills. And yet, we need good people now more than ever as our businesses recover. The question is, how do we find them? I took a decision around eight years ago to alter my business model. Rather than a fast-paced, target driven, high pressure environment, my goal was to create a salon where service and standards – rather than profits – came first. I decided there must be a better way to achieve and measure success. This touched all areas of the business and more recently I’ve begun to consider how and where I recruit new staff. In fact, the answer for me has been to go back to basics. By reaching out to schools and targeting school leavers, we’ve managed to find young, keen candidates. My current team all joined me as juniors. Yes, it takes more investment in training, but I’ve been rewarded with loyalty and longevity. Rather than a three-year apprenticeship, we complete our training in 18 months. I believe in paying a decent salary from the outset and the rest goes into a pot which funds further education. At the end of the 18-month apprenticeship, all recruits go on a

course that polishes up their skills. The pace of life – not just careers, but clothes, cars and lifestyles – applies to training and we have to accept that there are very few people who are prepared to spend three years folding towels and sweeping floors. It doesn’t mean that I’m willing to compromise on high-quality candidates. Recruiting from ground level means your team members are joining without any technical hair experience. But rather than being a disadvantage, I see that as an opportunity. For me, talent spotting has never been about who can do the best haircut. The right junior is always the one with the best attitude. I measure potential in staff by their conversation, work ethic, commitment, enthusiasm and initiative. I’d say you can tell almost instantly whether a recruit has what it takes to make it to the top. Once you’ve attracted the right staff, it’s as much up to you as them to keep them there. Don’t assume it’s just about salary. What do YOU offer above and beyond any other salon on the high street? I’ve always had a philosophy that as soon as someone decides to work for you, you work for them. When anyone comes on board, it’s my job to make sure each person has what they need. Everyone has different driving forces and I make it my business to find out what they are. If staff know you’re working for them, I’ve found they’re far more likely to come to you with what they need and be open about any issues. At Smith England, we also keep the team motivated with opportunities for growth and development such as awards, photoshoots and experiences outside of the salon. It develops their skills and drives their ambition. In today’s world, staff are more and more focused on flexibility and being in control of working when and how they need to. Rigid structures are a thing of the past and I’ve had to adapt my business to accommodate this. Longer holidays and time off based around school terms are two areas that come up time and time again. Similarly, I allow the team to run their own columns. They know their capacity and I trust them to find their own limits. If you have someone good who works hard, you need to find a way to strike a balance. In short, you have to see your team as your salon’s greatest asset. Investing in finding the right people and keeping them with you does pay off. And, don’t forget, by listening to your team and creating a job they enjoy showing up to, they get what they need and – importantly – so do you. * Statistics according to NHBF 2019

DAWSON’S CUTS SEAN DAWSON, GENERAL MANAGER AT ADAM REED LONDON, GIVES HIS TAKE ON THE HOLY GRAIL OF RECRUITING THE RIGHT TEAM. Whether you are an established salon or just starting out…. ’Teamwork makes the ‘dream work’ and having an incredible team is what we all strive for isn’t it? Well putting together a great team is the easy part, its keeping them together that often creates the biggest problems but it’s actually easier than you think… once you have the right ones. We often feel that utopia would be a salon full of ‘Superstar’ Stylists who are all future British Hairdressers of the Year but you

LET’S START WITH THE FIRST CATEGORY THAT I LIKE TO CALL THE ARTISTS. ■ The Artists are normally ‘last in and last out’ when it comes to salon time keeping. ■ They are passionate about the craft and are at their happiest when being creative or just doing hair. ■ They usually have ‘too much month at the end of the money’ meaning they are not financially focused and often won’t even look at their payslip but just go to an ATM to check they have been paid. ■ They will be obsessed with fashion, art and lifestyle and spend more time online researching trends than wasting time watching TV, and socialising is an important part of their culture. ■ Their haircuts, colours and creative work is everything and they will often run behind if their creation needs more time or that even more important Instagram shot needs taking. ■ They don’t really believe in retailing products and feel that their skill and creativity is enough to keep the clients coming back… They are neither salesmen or women. They will stay behind or come in on their day off without complaint if it’s for something that gets their creative juices flowing. ■ When quiet, you will often find them with their head buried in their phone looking at the new trends, watching hairdressing videos or working on a block head.

NOW FOR THE SECOND CATEGORY THAT I LIKE TO CALL THE MONEY HUNGRY. ■ The Money Hungry are never late and very rarely sick, in fact they would come in if they had chronic flu if it meant still making the money. ■ They are financial experts and often know their salary packages better than you and will pull you up immediately if their pay packet is light. ■ They see their relationship with clients as purely transactional and are the salon experts at upselling and retailing to increase their average bill. ■ They are obsessed with target figures and you will always find them at the top of your weekly taking reports, and if you run an incentive with a financial prize, then expect these team members to fight it out. They love winning! ■ They are miserable when they are quiet and will hang around the desk to make sure they capture that walk-in client into their chair, often before the receptionist has even opened their mouth. ■ They are usually great hairdressers with amazing ‘work ethics’ and will squeeze any client in, but that can sometimes mean that they have to compromise on service to do so, and they do tend to kidnap the assistant team for themselves. ■ They are often unwilling to give up time for creative projects or attending shows as they see hairdressing more of a job than as a career, and don’t be surprised if they ask to be paid for giving up their personal time.

couldn’t be further from the reality. Recruitment is a skill that you have to learn and develop like any leadership skill but I want to share with you something that will give you the best chance of ticking ALL the boxes. Let’s start with identifying who and what you need. I always say there are only three types of hairdresser, and getting an even mix of all three is the key to leading a strong achieving salon business.

THE THIRD CATEGORY THAT I LIKE TO CALL MR AND MRS RELIABLE. ■ Mr and Mrs Reliable are very rarely late or sick and when they are, you would never question their excuses. ■ They are usually very good at what they do and most importantly very consistent. ■ You know that every client will be well looked after and that nearly all your service boxes will be ticked with these team members. ■ They often watch a lot of TV and go to the cinema and love to talk to clients about what’s happening in their favourite soaps, their family and their pets. ■ They also tend to eat a packed lunch although you will notice this will probably be the same sandwich with the same flavour crisps and favourite biscuit. ■ They are at their best when in their comfort zone and when you try to squeeze something in with them they tend to get a bit panicky and although they will deliver it on time, they won’t be happy. ■ They will love attending a show or creative night as they find it really exciting and they will take new techniques they learn into their hairdressing skills once they have practiced them a few times. ■ They are a pleasure to manage and take up very little of your time and for this reason sometimes get a little overlooked whilst you are dealing with issues from the previous two categories.

OK, so I bet as you were reading these you had different team members popping up in your head for each category? Of course you did, and that’s great as it will help with the next part. So now we know the three types of hairdressers you may have guessed how important it is to have an even balance of all three. If you had that team full of

RECRUITMENT 3

‘Salon Superstars’ or ‘Artists’ that we talked about earlier, then you would have a real problem where they would clash because they would all be competing to be the salons most creative. This can lead to bitchiness and of course, your salon retail business would be non-existent. Now imagine the atmosphere if you had a salon full of ‘Money Hungry Stylists.’ The competitive nature, although profitable would be a nightmare, wouldn’t it? OK so now you are thinking that a salon full of ‘Mr and Mrs Reliables’ would be a dream to run as think of all the extra time you would have to get on with what you need to do. Although your life would be far easier, your salon would grow exceptionally slowly and would lack the energy critical to a successful salon. A successful salon thrives when we have an equal split of each of our three categories above and each is as IMPORTANT as the other to your growth as a business. Each category acts as a counter balance to the other and having this harmony allows each person to grow and develop in the roles that their ‘core traits’ benefit your business. The key phrase here is ‘core traits’ as the above are just personality traits that although you can improve or modify you can NEVER change.

LET ME EXPLAIN… As we get more experienced as hairdressers we will naturally take on certain traits from those around us and add them to our work ethic. For example an ‘Artist’ will eventually, with time, realise that being more financially astute will help them live a better life. This will never make turn them into a Money Hungry Stylist because the Artist is at their ‘core’ but people do adapt and take on new traits with experience. So now next time you need to recruit a new team member make sure you identify WHAT TYPE OF HAIRDRESSER DO YOU NEED. Make a list of your current team and identify which category they belong to. Add them up and you will see what you’re needing. Now word your recruitment ad to suit the role you’re looking for. If you need an ‘Artist’ then talk about your creative opportunities and how dynamic you are. If you need a ‘Money Hungry’ say you need a ‘Busy, hungry, hardworking Stylist with great earning potential’ If you need a ‘Mr and Mrs Reliable’ then talk about your salon friendly, caring and safe way. Setting off some lightbulbs?…. Good, well there is one more point I want to add. Once you have your balanced team make sure that from now on, if you run incentives

that are attractive to all of them. There is nothing worse than when a team member thinks that there is no point in trying as they know who will win, and yes its usually a ‘Money Hungry’ stylist. Maybe have 3 different prizes that each category will be attracted to and want to win and set the three different objectives for winning each one. So have three prizes: ■ Cash for the highest taker or achiever – for the ‘Money Hungry’s,’ ■ An Artistic Prize for the most improved – for the ‘Artists,’ ■ Cinema or Theatre Tickets for the most consistent – for the ‘Mr and Mrs Reliables.’ I can guarantee that if you use this system every team member will be more engaged from the outset, will try harder to win their chosen prize and ultimately your incentives will be far more successful.

KEEPING THE FAITH THOMAS HILLS, DIRECTOR OF TH1 HAIR, OXTED THINKS A MORE HYBRID APPROACH TO BUSINESS IS THE WAY FORWARD. Each and every one of us will have seen our businesses, careers and family lives disrupted in ways we could never have imagined in recent times, making it hard to continually keep calm and carry on. But carry on collectively we have. And while some businesses will of course have fared better than others, the industry’s fighting spirit has helped push us through to the other side, while we’ve pivoted our offerings, re-evaluated our business models and redesigned our visions of the future as we go. But just what is the future for business owners now? We’ve always been risk-takers and dream-makers, offering myriad opportunities to our teams, cheer-leading them as they go, but the business landscape has irrevocably changed, and conventional strategic thinking hasn’t been enough to help us plan for a new normal. Instead it’s highlighted the need for more of a hybrid approach to business, taking elements from before, while fusing them with a more innovative approach in both practice and mindset. The most critical question for us all now is how will the landscape have changed for our industry long-term, and not only that, but how will our clients’ behaviour have changed in a post-pandemic world? Because while the pandemic is of course temporary, the ripple effect it has caused most definitely won’t be. Many of us, myself included will have had moments where we have felt it’s impossible to plan for the future when it’s proved to be so uncertain, but taking time to tackle issues head-on is key – there’s no longer time for brushing problems under the carpet, they need to be assessed and addressed as and when they arise. Managing risk has always been at the heart of any business, but now risk has presented itself in so many others ways that keeping faith in the future and trusting the recovery is key.

HERE’S SOME LESSONS I’VE LEARNT TO HELP ALONG WITH WAY… ■ Keep your perspective. The first lockdown was one of the hardest moments in my career. It became a time of survival, which pushed me to my limit both emotionally and financially. Since then, however, I’ve learnt to hold my nerve, to address issues as they arise and to try not to worry about a future I can’t control – however hard this may be. ■ I’ve learned that surrounding yourself with exceptional people is the best ring fence to your business, making growth more sustainable, and developing a true team spirit that means you can work collectively through the tougher times. ■ The customer has changed, post pandemic, and if your mindset stays the same your business won’t be sustainable. With this in mind it’s important to encourage a growth mind-set among your team to allow speed of response to your clients’ ever evolving needs. ■ Over the last year, I’ve learnt that authenticity, transparency and staying true to your passion and vision is paramount to your business moving forward. It’s about a laser vision and staying focused on the end goal without distraction. None of this is easy but I’m still trying to enjoy the journey – even if it did reroute itself along the way. ■ It’s not always what happens to you but how you react to it that matters. I can’t lie, the last year has been the toughest year for me both personally and professionally, there have been times when I’ve considered changing my whole life, but at the core of everything is the fact that I still love what I do, and that brighter days will come. ■ Caring will become the most powerful business advantage and one we should use to ours. Customers may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel. ■ Focus on a positive mind-set, on team morale, and on engagement with both staff and clients. What worked yesterday is unlikely to form the business blueprint of the future, so adapt and react to a new normal, and reframe your understanding of your business as you go.

YOUR WELLBEING GURU KEEPING HAIRDRESSERS HEALTHY WITH A NEW SERIES AIMED AT MAINTAINING THE BEST POSSIBLE YOU! AUTHOR OF THE BEST POSSIBLE YOU, AND FOUNDER OF THE GUT CLINIC, HANNAH RICHARDS, NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST AND LIFESTYLE COACH HAS SPENT OVER A DECADE MAKING IT HER MISSION TO MAKE NUTRITION AND HEALTH SYNONYMOUS. HER ADVICE – KEEP IT SIMPLE, EAT ORGANIC AND EAT SEASONALLY IS HER HEARTBEAT – AND CAN SO EASILY BECOME YOURS. EATING: IT’S OVERRATED, AND ANYWAY, WHO HAS GOT THE TIME? If I got a pound or even a penny for the number of times someone whined at me that they do not have time for anything, especially ‘eating’, I’d be in early retirement writing, swimming and eating for a living. I try to explain to these people that they find time for other things equally as important, perhaps that’s the issue; eating isn’t as important as brushing your teeth; your hair, looking after your image, your phone, your car, and yet without it, we end up like Nigella, with silk PJs slumped in the SMEG with half a bottle of prosecco and tiramisu at midnight, and it’s only Tuesday. Time is a collection of the past, the present, and the future. All rolled together as one entity. Have you ever thought about what you ate yesterday and what you won’t eat today, affecting how pleasant you are tomorrow? Food and the quality of food make up your emotional status; it helps you be more confident to make better decisions, to have more energy to think out of the box and most importantly, not let your monkey out of the box (monkey mind). Think of yourself like a bathtub except with holes in the bottom. The water is constantly pouring out, and you’ve got to keep the water running to keep submerged. The holes represent your stress. For example, not eating breakfast, skipping lunch, and eating dinner too late - all these actions create body anxiety. If you don’t plug the holes in the bath with good nutrition soon, the plasters will lose their stick and fall off, leaving you exhausted and having to take time off from work to start the healing process.

SO PERHAPS YOUR DIET LOOKS LIKE THIS:

• • • •

Instant black coffee on waking and multiple cups throughout the day. Snacks on plain rice cakes, dried fruits, the boiled sweets/toffees at reception, more coffee, maybe a fizzy drink and all consumed on two feet! After all, who’s got the time to sit? Lunch: what’s lunch? Dinner at 9pm following a long day and maybe some alcohol, both suppressing your appetite and then increasing your need for food, and that’s when you find your best friend, the one that doesn’t judge you and doesn’t answer back, and is your emotional support: food and lots of it!

Suppose dinner is your biggest meal, having fasted unintentionally throughout the day. Your blood sugars, in that case, hormones, digestion, bowels and sleep, will potentially start to become problematic as you create a stress rollercoaster – rob Peter to pay Paul.

SO HOW CAN I GET OFF THIS EMOTIONAL FOOD FRENZY ROLLER COASTER AND CREATE SOME STABILITY IN MY NUTRITION AND HEALTH? It starts with asking yourself what you want and if what you do have is what you need. Then you can begin to make some changes. For me, these are my top actions to take to create a happier mind and body. Take your time and implement one at a time; once one step feels natural, take another. 1. Have a glass of water on waking (room temperature so it’s not a shock to your stomach where you hold anxiety). 2. Never drink instant coffee, predominantly black, on an empty stomach. Again it will dry up the acid that lives there, which is not only your first line in defence but helps you break down all that food, especially protein. Max out on two cups a day and make sure you have milk in it and some honey if you care for it. 3. Start the day with some fruit and protein; this will reduce the stress physiologically in your body, and start closing up those bath holes! 4. Drink coconut water and orange juice mixed to get your electrolytes and vitamin c in throughout the day, supporting your nutrition. 5. Be present for lunch outside, with a friend not on your phone and enjoy life; the scissors will be there when you return!

ARE YOU LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE? If not, then you are the only person that can change it, step by step; with a bit of help and support along the way, you too can become the best possible you.

LOOK & BOOK WITH MORE AND MORE CLIENTS BOOKING ONLINE, CO-FOUNDER OF THE HAIR UNCUT COMMUNITY AND FOUNDER OF SALON EDGE, PHIL COLLINS SAYS GIVE YOUR CLIENTS THIS OPTION. In a world where everybody is so busy, it can be tricky to remember to book our necessary appointments during the daytime whilst everything is open. This is where the ‘always on’ mentality not only comes in handy but is becoming an expectation of customers

everywhere around the globe. Giving your customers the chance to book their hair appointments in at their own leisure, whether you’re open or closed is an absolute no-brainer and a necessity in today’s world. Here’s why…

OVER 30% OF BOOKINGS ARE MADE WHEN YOU’RE CLOSED…

could see them regularly looking at your other services, as well as recommending them because they’re more informed on your full range.

If a business analyst came into your business to improve it, and could increase your income by 10-15%, you’d be over the moon. If you look at your current revenue and add 30% to that which you could generate through offering an online booking system, you’re looking at a significant difference. For instance, a £10k per month revenue is now £13k which certainly isn’t to be sniffed at. The beauty of this is that it doesn’t require additional staffing in order to implement everything.

IT PUTS THE CUSTOMER BACK IN CONTROL… When your customers can see the availability of appointments, they can check this against their own commitments without feeling pressured. We’re a very polite country so customers may politely accept suggested appointment slots when you offer them in person, only to cancel afterwards which is happening a lot recently and is incredibly damaging for any business. Customers will prefer to look at availability while they are more relaxed and have the time to pay attention and work out the very best appointment time for them. This also reduces how many cancellations you’ll receive, because they’ll already know how quickly spaces get booked up from seeing how many slots were free when booking. If they can see it’s going to be weeks before you can fit them in again, they’re less likely to miss their booked appointment and will start to really see the benefit of re-booking when before they leave the salon.

REDUCED NO SHOWS DUE TO ACCEPTING CARD PAYMENTS…

THEY’LL HAVE MORE TIME TO EXPLORE OTHER TREATMENTS THEY CAN BOOK IN FOR… When booking their regular hair or beauty appointment, it will be easier for your customers to check out your other services and treatments too. They won’t feel ‘sold to’ which it can sometimes feel like when we try to tell customers what else we offer that they may like. If you sell your retail lines online it may also encourage them to make a purchase. It also gives them the chance to read about them in as much detail as they like and book something in which fits with their timings and budget. For instance, a family wedding in a few months could see them booking in a few treatments along the way which they may not have otherwise paid attention to or felt they could afford. The freedom to ‘look and book’ with no pressure can be a powerful sales tool. When they’ve done this once or twice, you

If your customers can pay for their appointments when they book them or at the very least a deposit, it helps everyone. They are far less likely to cancel and lose their money if they have already paid for it or indeed a part payment. And your worst-case scenario is that you have an empty seat, not an empty bank balance. With any small business, cashflow is paramount to its success, so anything you can do to improve this is going to make a difference to the ease of your finances. Being able to accept card payments could also see an increase in bookings generally over time, as customers will be inclined to book and pay ‘while they have it’ such as after payday etc. They’ll love being able to keep tabs on their ‘beauty money’ knowing that it’s all booked in. You can see now, how being able to book online appointments really does help your customers manage booking your services far more easily. You’ll have happy customers literally just breezing in when their appointment is due, rather than calling in a panic because they forget to book in getting their roots done – yet again!

DO YOU REALLY WANT IT ALL? A MINDFUL SAM BURNETT, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF HARE & BONE GETS PERSONAL ON WHAT HE REALLY REALLY WANTS. Before the pandemic I used to want it all...Before the pandemic I used to do it all. I travelled internationally working with artists such as Dua Lipa and Charli XCX. I was backstage in Paris, Milan and London assisting with every fashion show I could. I launched, operated and worked in my two salons. I collaborated with manufacturers. I held press events. I worked on editorial shoots. I mentored. I designed educational courses. I networked as often as my schedule allowed. I presented on stage. I entered awards – creative and business. And I loved every, fast-paced minute of it. Then the pandemic hit and forced us all to stop. And to reflect. Since I was three years old, all I have ever wanted to be was a hairdresser. 38 years on I still want to be a hairdresser. My drive and passion for hairdressing and our industry has never faltered, but recently, I have been asking myself if I really need to do it all. For as long as I can remember I have rushed from salon to shoot, from

press appointment to award ceremony and the lockdown allowed me to stop and take stock of what is important to me. And what came out on top was my health and that included my emotional, physical, spiritual and mental health. To make this a priority I am beginning to realise that maybe I don’t have to do it all. As with many of us the enforced lockdown made me think about what I do and what I want in life. For the first time I had a routine that put my health as priority. I ate better, slept better, created morning routines that nourished my mind and my body. I exercised more. I read more. I stressed less. All of this allowed me to become the best Sam Burnett I can be. Focussing on gratitude has allowed me to feel the most content I have in a long time. The desire for more – more fun, more work, more money, more respect, more awards, more credit is a whole lot less than it was 18 months ago. And I think I like it. The difference is now I have the head space to figure out what I like and what I don’t like without the fear of being overlooked by an industry that means so much to me. I wonder if others feel the same, but are too scared to speak up? It feels a little nerve wracking to say “I don’t want it all” but I believe it is important that we reset the expectations - and the pressure that comes with them. I’m starting to realise that you don’t need it all to be ‘successful’ and that success come from within. Before the pandemic we lived in a culture where success was often determined by how busy you were. I see now that I was part of that culture. Rushing around, saying yes to everything that came my way. I loved it and it helped build the career I have today, so I am not complaining but I am realising it doesn’t have to be that way. Today I am happiest when I’m behind the chair, where it all began. It doesn’t mean that I don’t love editorial work, or I am in anyway less inspired or driven – because I am, in many ways even more so, but for today I am most content by working in the salon, reconnecting to my clients. More than ever, I appreciate that one-on-one time we missed during the pandemic. I’m not closed to opportunities and in no-way am I taking a backseat, I am simply prioritising my own health for the first time in decades. I am taking my time to consider what is important to me, my career and my business. So far, this has given me more energy, confidence and clarity. Maybe in another 18 months things will change again, and if that is the case then I’ll be ready but for now, I’m going to focus only on the things that bring me happiness.

LOCKDOWN MAKEOVERS Check out two stunning salon renovations that happened over lockdown.

RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL, GEORGE SQUARE, GLASGOW This stunning salon is one of the Rainbow Room International group’s city centre locations based in the iconic area of George Square, surrounded by architecturally important buildings, shops, bars and restaurants. Salon Director Dylan Brittain loves the area of the salon and the history of the building and all the original features that the salon has, and this is something he wanted to keep when refurbishing the salon. Dylan wanted the new design to highlight the period of the building, yet still have a very elegant and luxurious feel. “Since opening the salon in 2000, we had not undertaken a full refurbishment due to the high standard of workmanship and the classic design of the salon. Whilst the previous classic style had stood the test of time with us making small updates through the years, we felt it was time to update the salon to reflect who we are and the journey we’ve been on these last 20 years,” says Dylan. “With the salon’s design we wanted to bring something International to Glasgow. We took inspiration from places we had been to and loved around the world, including Paris and New York. Our vision was for the salon to look timeless and to have an expensive feel that we had experienced in a Parisian salon or a New York loft. The new design features a colour bar within the backwash area of the salon, a waiting area with an original fireplace and green leather armchairs and a bar in the reception area of the salon with high backed stools and fridge to serve cocktails.”

TOMMY’S HAIR COMPANY, RUTHIN, WALES Tommy’s Hair Company, situated on Clwyd Street in Ruthin, has been a well-established salon for 16 years, with Dutch owners Tommy and Esther Van Der Veken opening the salon in 2005. The salon has built up a longstanding and loyal clientele and is known for exceptional hairdressing skills and a high standard of customer service. In January, Tommy’s along with many other neighbouring businesses were left with a trail of destruction following flash flooding throughout the town centre, with the salon under a large amount of water. Once they had assessed the situation, Esther and Tommy took the decision to fully renovate the salon, taking the interior back to the bare brick and rebuilding their pride and joy. Since then the salon has undergone a total refurbishment and the team re-opened the doors in June, with the team bursting with excitement and ready to get back to the salon. Esther explains, “After a long lockdown and many salon closures following the global pandemic, we were devastated that our Ruthin salon was destroyed by the flash flooding – along with many other local businesses we had to start from the beginning and rebuild. We have worked so closely with our team of tradesman and insurance and cannot wait to show off and introduce everyone to our newly refurbished salon – it’s been a long time coming!”

THE POWER OF PINK ghd has raised over $20 Million for breast cancer charities globally and in July launched the 17th annual limited-edition pink collection and campaign in support of breast cancer charities. An evolution of 2020’s successful Take Control Now campaign, the 2021 collection features the campaign messaging ‘TAKE CONTROL NOW’ on the limited edition styling tools, providing women with a regular reminder to self-check for signs of breast cancer. EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH

‘DO IT FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES’ This is a hero message within this breast cancer awareness driving campaign, because sometimes hearing the impact that an illness like breast cancer could have on your loved ones, makes you stop and TAKE CONTROL NOW. ghd partnered with eight incredible muses for the campaign, to communicate a powerful and emotional message around the importance of self-checking for both yourself and your loved ones. They invited four young women who have never self-checked to read the intimate stories of people who have been affected by breast cancer, in the hope that hearing these stories would encourage them to start self-checking on a regular basis. The personal breast cancer stories were shared by four muses: a mother, Lesley, whose daughter Hatti has breast cancer; a husband, Asad, whose wife Sania has breast cancer; a sister, Medina, whose younger sister Nadia has breast cancer; and a young lady called Jen, who has been living with breast cancer for 10 years. After hearing these emotional stories, the young women’s views of self-checking were transformed and all four women, who had never self-checked, committed to checking their breasts EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH. Discover the incredible stories on ghdhair.com or ghd YouTube for more information. £10 from every pink limited-edition purchase goes to Breast Cancer Now in the UK. #ghdpink #takecontrolnow

Each tool in the pink collection has been designed to feature the Take Control Now message, so that EVERY. SINGLE. Recovery Hair Care

H

air loss can be one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy, so it follows that its regrowth should be cause for celebration. However, hair growing back in after chemotherapy can be deeply sensitised and needs to be handled with care. It may also have a very different look, feel and texture to before, and require new products and regimes to feel at its best. Clients coming through chemotherapy have already faced a lot; as their hairdresser, providing some practical advice for caring and styling and effective techniques to encourage healthy hair regrowth is a brilliant way to bolster their confidence and show your support as they navigate the next step in their recovery. As ghd launches their 17th limited edition pink collection in aid of breast cancer charities, ghd Global Ambassador Zoë Irwin shares her advice for caring for post-chemo hair. The main thing to know about post-chemotherapy hair is that the texture changes. I’m passionate about the benefits of scalp massage, which can stretch the cells within the follicles to nourish the hair and encourage blood flow to the area. This not only encourages growth but can also improve the quality of the hair – plus, it’s incredible for de-stressing. Open your hands up, place the finger pads on the scalp and gently move in a circular pattern; remember that you’re trying to move the scalp and not the hair. Work from the temples up, spreading your hands to move over the top of the scalp, sliding across and repeating the circular motion over the whole head. You can also focus on the back of the neck, by gently leaning the head back into your fingers. It’s important to really focus on caring for the hair as it grows in. When you come out of chemo, it’s advised that you don’t wash your hair for a couple of days. It shouldn’t get too oily at this stage but look at using a good quality dry shampoo if you feel you need it. After those initial few days, I recommend using a good mask once or twice a week as the hair grows back– particularly those with lots of

protein and conditioning benefits to maintain optimum health. It’s not always necessary to shampoo the hair at this stage, particularly when it’s more textured. Instead of shampooing, washing through thoroughly and conditioning is a great way to add more moisture, rather than cleansing the hair too much.

Styling Support

I also really recommend ghd Curly Ever After, which is a curl hold spray but incredibly hydrating. It’s a great styling product to add moisture into the hair and achieve a nice finish.

“When hair first grows back in after chemo, it’s often very brittle and prone to breakage. A silk pillowcase is great for slide and is much gentler on the hair, so it won’t get tugged and snapped.”

When it comes to styling, turn the heat of your hairdryer down to medium. I encourage clients to work with the texture of the new hair, rather than against it and to focus on creating a nice head shape. Hair tends to grow out very rounded, so try to lift the top and the sides out and brush the bottom in to create a nice shape. Warm the hair gently to style, then use the cold shot to set it. If you’re using a brush, make sure it’s a gentle bristle brush. The ghd comb attachment is very good on shorter hair that’s growing out. Putting it on at the roots, with the dryer on a medium setting, allows you to gently pull away and stretch out the root area very gently.

Using a silk pillowcase is a great way to support healthy hair regrowth. When hair first grows back in after chemo, it’s often very brittle and prone to breakage. A silk pillowcase is great for slide and is much gentler on the hair, so it won’t get tugged and snapped. Accessories are a great way to dress up your hair as it grows out, and they’re really on-trend. There are lots of fantastic hairbands available, and I love silk scarves which are extremely gentle on the hair and very stylish.

Launched and developed by hairdresser and salon owner Matthew Smith in 2009, EcoTowels was the answer to Matthew’s need for getting rid of wet and dirty towels that kept piling up in the salon, let alone the time, money and storage he was wasting with laundering his traditional cotton towels. Over 12 years later, Matthew and his wife George are still in the salon and still using EcoTowels every day, making sure the towels are of the best quality and affordability they can be for their business and other salons across the UK.

Natural Solution For a disposable salon towel that is being constantly tried and tested by salon staff and clients, look no further than EcoTowels.

Made from all-natural, biodegradable materials, EcoTowels are a mix of wood pulp and plant materials (viscose) that are bound together through hydroentangling to create super-soft and super-absorbent hairdressing towels. There are no chemicals or preservatives in EcoTowels, which allows them to be disposed through regular refuse collection or through partnership with The Green Salon Collective, who EcoTowels have worked with on developing their disposable solutions for salon towels.

“I am in love with EcoTowels. They are a game changer and after 30 years of taking home bags of laundry, I am converted… I just love these towels” Judith, The Hair Gallery, Belfast “My team love EcoTowels and it’s taken the massive headache of me going to the laundrette in Soho. £15 a wash… it was rinsing me (if you pardon the pun!)” Victoria, About This Place, Soho London

“EcoTowels felt better than my previous brand and have been very absorbent and strong. They have proved really popular with my staff and clients – some clients have even asked to purchase them for when they go away” Jacqui, The Village Salon, Harefield

Available in a variety of sizes and styles, including smooth towels (ideal for wet work at the basin), and textured (loved by Matthew’s staff doing colour work), EcoTowels are an eco-friendly, budget-friendly and space-friendly alternative to cotton towels.

Sustaining your Business There’s no escaping the fact that daily life has changed in a big way in the past 18 months, and nowhere more so than in the salon. Alongside Aveda’s sustainability credentials which have been at the forefront of everything they do since they first launched in 1978, Aveda is also the perfect salon partner to help boost your business: More Salon Guests Recruiting new guests is one of the biggest challenges salons face today. Aveda's newest partnership with Powered by Flossie, will put Aveda at the forefront of the salon industry, with pioneering technology enabling Aveda to drive new guests into salons. Aveda.co.uk receives on average 4000 visits per day, and with this new platform integrated into Aveda.co.uk, the brand is able to drive loyal online & retail guests into salons for services in just a few easy clicks. Not just that, however, every time Aveda runs large media campaigns, increasing the traffic to the website and recruiting new consumers – they are then able to drive them into Aveda salons through their journey online to help continuously drive service revenue for salons.

“Flossie has been such a support for our business since using it to help us open back up again after the 18 months we’ve had! To be able to benefit from Aveda’s consumer customers at such a local level is game changing for us, especially when it comes to welcoming new guests to the salon” MICHAEL MACLEOD, FRESH LIFESTYLE SALON, FITZROVIA

More Retail With consumer shopping behaviour shifting towards online, Aveda launched another industry first initiative, A-Commerce, to help salons boost their profits through online sales. It’s super simple to get started without training sessions or stock management. Salons earn commission on all retail sales sold via their salon on aveda.co.uk to give you the chance to earn between salon visits, and your clients the opportunity to purchase retail from you when they’re not in the salon. The site clients see looks just like your brand, but Aveda handles all of the fulfilment and costs related to postage and packaging, so you can concentrate on using your expertise to advise rather than thinking about the smaller details and costs that go into selling online.

More Client Loyalty

“Salon A-Commerce has been invaluable for us, enabling us to sell to our customers while the salon has been closed. It was so easy to set up, and the fact that everything is fulfilled by Aveda means it’s hassle-free for us! And we don’t miss out on any Aveda offers now as these are all included” GARY INGHAM, GARY INGHAM AVEDA LIFESTYLE SALON AND SPA, HAMPSTEAD

Underpinning these two digital initiatives, is an industry leading reward program, Aveda Plus Rewards to ensure clients stay loyal to your salon. Members earn points on product purchases and hair colour services, which they can redeem against seven tiers of rewards from best-selling products to salon/spa experience vouchers, which increase your customers urge to stay loyal. And the best bit is you don’t have to do a thing to offer your own salon loyalty scheme! Aveda creates all the marketing and emails for you, including birthday gifts for clients and promoting Aveda salons to their loyalty members to help drive new business.

Expert Help As well as future proofing salons digitally, Aveda also understands the importance of upskilling salon owners in business. Aveda Business College started 15 years ago and offers a full 360° learning experience with a complete toolbox to help upskill salon owners in business. The collection of classes, events and toolkits focus on helping salon owners become sustainable and successful in leadership, recruitment, training and development, social media and much more. Set the base for beautiful hair SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL EXPANDS ITS FIBRE CLINIX HAIR CARE REGIME WITH THE LAUNCH OF NEW SCALP CLINIX.

With awareness towards scalp care increasing, clients have more understanding of different scalp issues and know that having a healthy scalp is a major contributor to healthy hair. Just like skin, each scalp has different needs that require an individualised approach in order to be treated effectively. Brand new Scalp Clinix from Schwarzkopf Professional is a completely customisable scalp care regime from salon to home care maintenance that helps to re-balance the scalp’s microbiome – because healthy hair starts at the scalp. The result? A balanced scalp and beautiful, healthy-looking hair.

SCALP CLINIX BIOTIC IN-SALON SERVICE: Purely dedicated to scalp care, this service is suitable for clients that experience scalp imbalances and who are looking for solutions to address their scalp concern; it consists of three simple steps to re-balance the scalp’s microbiome and to set a base for beautiful hair. It can be used as a standalone service, or included in the Fibre Clinix Tribond Service for those with scalp imbalances and compromised mid-lengths and ends. Prep – the Scalp Clinix Pre-Shampoo Scrub with Biotic Technology gently exfoliates dead skin cells to prepare the scalp for cleansing, leaving it feeling refreshed with a cooling effect. Cleanse – the Fibre Clinix Tribond Shampoo with Triple Bonding and C21 Technology cleanses the hair and scalp in preparation for treatment. Treat – the Scalp Clinix Biotic Base helps to re-balance the scalp’s microbiome, for improved scalp condition. AT HOME CARE COLLECTION To maintain the improved scalp condition at home until the next salon visit, hairdressers can prescribe the most appropriate home scalp care routine for their client: Scalp Clinix Soothing – soothes dry, delicate scalps, with a treatment containing Allantoin, Bisabolol and Panthenol to help strengthen the scalp’s protective barrier, leaving the scalp with a calming and moisturised feeling. Scalp Clinix Oil Control – deeply cleanses oily scalps, with a treatment to unclog pores and remove excess sebum when combined with a gentle massage leaving the scalp feeling refreshed with a cooling effect. Scalp Clinix Flake Control – removes and prevents new dandruff flakes gently and effectively, with a treatment containing Octopirox, providing a soothing feeling to itchy and irritated scalps. Scalp Clinix Anti-Hair Loss – a regime for thinning hair, with a shampoo and a serum that, paired with a massage, promotes the scalp’s blood micro-circulation and strengthens the hair follicles, reducing non-pathological hair loss after 6 weeks*. *When the Anti-Hair Loss Shampoo & Serum are used together

Each Scalp Clinix home care regime contains a Shampoo and Treatment/Serum formulated with Biotic Technology, developed with dedicated skincare-inspired ingredients to support the scalp’s microbiome balance, prolonging the effect of the Scalp Clinix Biotic in-salon service.

Get on track Salon Tracker enhances its app within the brand new Editable Siteview feature. Founded in 2008, Salon Tracker started out as software programme ‘Studio Tracker’. Over the past decade, the programme has continued to be developed by professional software engineers, now supplying management services to salons and groups of different sizes across the UK and Ireland. Siteview has been a Salon Tracker customer favourite for several years, and so during the lockdown the company decided that they would further better this feature by making it editable. Since COVID, many salon clients have adjusted to the new way of life and so the company decided to make running a salon even easier, whilst not having to be there. Siteview is available on the software’s Enterprise package, allowing salon owners and their staff members to view the calendars and reports straight from their phone, tablet or PC. With the new upgrade to this feature, bookings can now be made directly from the app! Perfect for all types of salons, it means that staff can log in and check their appointments from home, as well as being able to make any further bookings if required. The Siteview app can be downloaded directly from the app store, making it as easy as possible to get an overview of the salon without staff actually having to be there. For salon owners, the dashboard gives you the perfect overview of the day, week or month, giving you insights into number of sales, bookings, new customers as well as some easy to view graphs.

Siteview is available on both IOS and android devices and is included as part of the company’s Enterprise software package, starting at £90pcm. For more information please contact Salon Tracker on info@salontracker.co.uk or 0113 350 8230, or visit: WWW.RDR.LINK/HD021

“Throughout the lockdown, it became apparent very quickly that salon owners required a flexible app that allowed them to manage their businesses whilst away from the salon location. Our developers worked hard to provide an editable app, meaning client bookings could now be amended and updated without having to be altered on the main system. Providing a much more beneficial solution for our clients over that time and also going forward in to the future too.” Nicola Soanes, Sales and Marketing Manager

UV light technology is one of the most effective sanitation tools available today to destroy COVID-19 and all other viruses and bacteria. The technology is not new; companies such as the 125-year-old Tungsram Group have an almost century-old history with UV lighting. The brand has recently launched the UV Sanitizer series boasting two affordable, efficient and easy-to-use tools for your salon.

Protect your employees and clients with the power of UV technology from Tungsram.

WITH TUNGSRAM TUNGSRAM UV-C SANITIZER

The first in the series, the Tungsram UV-C Sanitizer offers an environmentally friendly way to sanitise items handled frequently by you, your members of staff and your clients, reducing the risk of cross contamination in your salon. Using UV-C light, the Sanitizer eliminates pathogens on brushes, clips, scissors, towels and more in just five minutes. It’s also super-easy to operate, with no special training required.

TUNGSRAM UV AIR PURIFIER CUBE

This brand-new product is an essential purifier system based on the photocatalytic degradation of chemical pollutants and microbes, such as formaldehyde, hydrocarbons, bacteria, fungi and viruses. Its Nano Ti02 coating of nickel mesh oxidises and decomposes organic substances into harmless products such as C02 and water, disinfecting and sanitising the air in areas of your salon.

home What they’re watching, reading and doing. This month it’s everyone’s favourite double act Gary Hooker & Michael Young…

The Playlist /Album

The Boxset Michael – Halston We both loved this!!! It’s a biopic (Netflix series) about the American fashion designer Halston, who became famous throughout the 60s and 70s before spiralling out of control through a life of debauchery. This is another gem from Ryan Murphy and definitely worth a watch. You don’t want to watch it with your parents though (hahaha).

The Book GARY – Think Like A Monk I love motivational books that make me think about life which in turn helps massively in making business decisions. So – I’m not training to be a monk (hahaha) but rather training my mind to be less anxious – it really works!

Michael – We both have a very eclectic taste in music – I guess at home it’s always more easy-listening or chilled vibes. I like a bit of Will Young, I’d probably say the ‘Echoes’ album would be my go-to choice.

Gary – I tend to play more uplifting music when I’m in the car, puts me in a happy place. But I’ve just re-discovered and downloaded a Sade playlist which I love when I’m at home – it’s so chilled.

The Film Michael – Moonlight This is one of those movies that we had planned to watch for ages! But just never got round to it – so five years later we finally got to see it and it was worth the wait. What an incredibly powerful film – a young African-American man who battles with his own identity and sexuality whilst experiencing the struggles of adolescence. Loved it!

The Exhibition/Dog Show Gary – I have finally been back to a dog show!!! Because of COVID all dog shows ground to a halt, which was strange as it’s been a huge part of my life for so many years. Peterborough Championship Dog Show saw my return to the show ring and it was definitely worth the wait – I won the Dog Champion Certificate and Best Of Breed! It felt so good to be back!

Revolve and evolve Creatively I love working with different people and teams from around the world. I’m genuinely interested in everyone I meet – I strongly believe that by putting the right energy out there – it truly attracts genuine connections. To be a friend means encouraging strengths in others and accepting their weaknesses, in other words, accepting people for who they are without judgement. Everyone you meet knows something you don’t know but you need to know, so listen and learn. To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be their world. We are here to help each other evolve 100%.

Let’s focus on F.A.M.E Being part of the Fellowship for British Hairdressings’ F.A.M.E team was truly monumental for my career. It gave me a platform – which told the UK hairdressing scene that by being part of this team – I was most definitely one to watch. I look back on that year as one of the happiest in my life – not because I was kicking my heels and having a ball – I think it was the year in which I learned the most I ever have! It was majestic – absolutely loved it. The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence is an annual initiative created to nuture, encourage and promote an elite group of young, up-and-coming hairdressers in all aspects of the industry. Offering unique exposure and a possible platform for future stardom, the F.A.M.E Team is the UK hairdressing industry’s original, and still the best independent launch platform for young creative stylists. Whenever I can I now take time to mentor the current F.A.M.E team. I have the honour of coordinating the F.A.M.E teams’ 2021 shoot with photographer Chris Bulezuik. Look forward to showing you the results. This year’s team is made of four incredible talented individuals – follow their journeys @br00ke.evans @nowayjoseuk @caseyc_hair and @brandonmessingerhair.

Under pressure It can feel like such a hectic lifestyle – we are always busy and always under so much pressure. By giving myself 10 minutes of meditation each day has really helped me to relax, restore some perspective and “My Calm, My Family” achieve that meditative state. Do something nice for yourself today, find somewhere quiet, sit in stillness, breathe. Put your problems on pause. You deserve a break. Go for a walk, a massage, a swim – get your hair done – do something that ticks your box – something for you. Stop caring about too many things and start listening to one thing – YOU!

Have a heart to heart People across the country are being encouraged to have a ‘heart to heart’ as part of a new campaign to get people from Black and Asian backgrounds talking about blood and organ donation. I became a ‘Heart to Heart’ ambassador because there is a shortage of black donors giving blood for transfusions. I now give blood frequently – and it makes me feel good because I feel like I’m doing my bit in respect of humanity and the @givebloodnhs.

Please help save lives.
