The Alan Howard team completes a 127 mile canal walk from Liverpool to London. A dedicated team of hikers from Alan Howard braved the 127-mile canal walk from Liverpool to Leeds in just 4 days. The team completed the challenge between Friday September 10 – Monday September 13 and endured over 40 hours of walking along the canal towpath. The team have raised over £3,000 so far for the Hair & Beauty Charity which offers financial support to individuals and their families facing difficult times due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, bereavement or financial hardship. Paul Brooks, National Sales Manager, said “despite the aches, pains, bruises and blisters still being present, I know I speak for all of the team when I say we are very proud of our achievement.
Andrew Smith of Andrew Smith Salons has been announced as the Global Artistic Director of Z.One Concept, parent company of Milkshake UK.
The 127 miles challenged us mentally as much as they did physically, but we got through it due to some great teamwork and a lot of laughter. A huge thank you to everyone that sponsored us and sent us messages of encouragement, it helped enormously.” You can still donate to the Alan Howard team challenge by visiting WWW.RDR.LINK/HE001

Haircuts4Homeless HAIRCUTS4HOMELESS CHARITY THAT PROVIDES THE HOMELESS WITH CONFIDENCE-BOOSTING CUTS HOLDS POP UP EVENT. During September’s British Beauty Week, Haircuts4Homeless held a pop up event giving haircuts free of charge to the homeless, providing a relaxing experience and a look to boost their confidence. Hosted at the new Electric Salon by Mark Woolley, the celebrity hairdressers who kindly provided their time and skills were Leigh Keates, Louis Byrne, Richard Ashforth and Nicola Harrowell. Stewart Roberts, Haircuts4Homeless founder commented on the event: “Today was an amazing event, bringing together the top of the hairdressing industry in the beautiful surroundings of Electric Space London. We had some great clients including Anne who I found starting to bed down on a nearby corner. I spoke to her for a while when she said it is her birthday this weekend so I walked her to the salon and Louis Byrne gave her a beautiful makeover. Jack Eames was on hand to take some shots for the upcoming Haircuts4Homeless book. There were goodie bags from L’Oréal and Beauty Banks and full body wipes from Mammoth Wipes. It was so good to be part of British Beauty Week again, I’m grateful for everything they do.”

The 2020/21 F.A.M.E Team have had a bumpy ride during their term – but these four guys are resilient and weren’t going to let a pandemic stop them! We have had the pleasure of mentoring them throughout this year and it’s been a blast! Say hello to Brooke Evans, Casey Colman, Brandon Messinger and José Domene...
Brandon: I always remember as a young junior reading about the FAME Team in industry mags and thinking ‘I want to be one of those people – but I didn’t really get into the creative side of things till much later – at which time I’d missed the cut off age to enter. It wasn’t until the Fellowship opened up the entry to under 35’s – that I thought, okay I’m ready to do this! However, it wasn’t that easy – I entered two or three times and didn’t make it. I was then 35, so my last chance to make it happen.
progression. I did however take a year out from the creative side to open my own salon which ended up being incredibly stressful as the salon flooded but that’s a whole different story! I guess in my head – opening a new salon and going for FAME Team in the same year just didn’t seem do-able for me but my PR convinced me otherwise, so I thought, what the hell – I’ll give it a go, I won’t get on anyway. The semi-finals weren’t great for me – I had a model turn up with the wrong hair length and I just wasn’t happy with my work, so to make the finals was incredible. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d actually make it onto the team, it’s hard to put it into words. I cried a lot! Hahaha!
Michael: Did you feel the pressure in that final year? It must have been intense!
Gary: That’s a pretty amazing journey – bet you’re glad you took the advice and entered.
Brandon: Yeah massively! I gave it everything I had and worked really hard to produce my best work, but that said I really wasn’t happy with my hair-up look so that planted a seed of doubt. I remember sitting at the Fellowship Luncheon listening to the names being called out, José, Brooke, Casey waiting for that last name was torture. When Ken read out my name I was in tears, it was so overwhelming.
Brooke: OMG absolutely! It was worth putting myself through the process – even getting grilled in the interview stage! Hahaha!
Michael: So guys – FAME Team, it’s been a bit of a journey for you four. The first team to ever do two years – what was it that made you go for it?
Brooke: I had previously been part of the Club Star Art Team and Project X within the Fellowship, so for me going for FAME Team felt like a natural
Casey: I think out of the four of us I tried the most times to get on FAME Team, actually four times! My first two attempts I was 27 and 28 – actually made the finals the second time but didn’t make the cut. For the next two years I had work commitments, travelling and teaching which meant when I came to give it another go, I was over 30 and too old to enter. So much like Brandon when the cut off age changed to 35 I

was able to go for it again. I was 31 when I entered for the third time and I believe to this day created some of my best work and because of this went into the final feeling over confident, didn’t practice on my model and the hair fell to pieces! I hadn’t prepared and looking back I went into the finals with the wrong mindset – believing I was already on the team. I was so disappointed in myself and ran off the stage in tears, it really was horrible – I felt so embarrassed but it really humbled me and brought me back down to a level where I thought, okay – what do I need to do to improve. Gary: Did this experience not put you off wanting to enter again? Casey: Absolutely yes! I 100% thought, I cannot do this to myself again – but you know what, I’d wanted it for such a long time, for six years I’d wanted to be on FAME Team, so I couldn’t not do it! That would just be stupid to give up and not reach my goal. So, the next year I came back with a stronger mental attitude, made the final and pulled out a showstopper which ultimately gained me my place on the team. Michael: A showstopper? Tell us more. Casey: I’d become very aware that you needed to do more than interview and present well – you need to put on a bit of a show. Having my model rip of her own wig and hack her own hair off on stage was probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my life! At that point I thought – I’ve done enough and I’m happy. That was a really long way of telling you guys that I entered four times and finally got on! Hahaha! José: My story is a little different – I moved to London 14 years ago – it takes a while to find your feet, working in different places, exploring the city and learning the language. I guess I always knew I had it in me to do something like FAME Team but I struggled to find the right kind of mentoring and people who would invest time in me. It wasn’t until I joined the team at Hare & Bone and started working with Sam Burnett that I realised my potential, but I was also 33 by then so when the age limit changed to 35 I knew it was my time to do this. I tried out twice, obviously the first time I wasn’t successful and didn’t make the finals, but it was an amazing experience which made me want to go for it again. I feel really lucky to be surrounded by such talented people in the salon who have mentored me to success and helped me achieve my place on the FAME Team.
Michael: We live in a world now where we encourage people to love themselves for who they are, without judgement. When you put yourself through a process like FAME Team, you have to take the knocks as well as the successes. Did the process make you a stronger person? José: It humbles you! You have to enter knowing that it may not go your way. We all have an ego whether it’s big or small and in that moment you need to leave it at the door. For me, I got good feedback which helped me grow and elevate my skill set. Casey: The word FAME stands for ‘FELLOWSHIP ACADEMY OF MERIT AND EXCELLENCE’ I think part of the journey is to be put through a judging process which ultimately makes you a better person. It’s worth going through every stage, taking every knock back to finally get to where we are now. Gary: Your time on the FAME Team is pretty unique – two years together instead of one and you’ve lived through a pandemic together. Would you change anything? Brooke: I wouldn’t change anything - I just wish we had started our year with you guys without any lockdowns and obstacles – when we’re all together it’s a scream! It’s been amazing since April – it just feels too short.

José: The experiences we’ve shared together are invaluable! It’s been different to what I’d imagined, but the world has been different for the past two years - I wouldn’t change a thing. Casey: I wouldn’t change a thing – literally not a thing. We all came into this wanting a human experience that would change us as people. Brooke is like my little sister, José is like my gay best friend and Brandon the straight brother that I never had! Now we also have two gay Dads! Hahaha! What’s not to love! We are like one big family and have been on our journey together. Brooke: I fully agree with Casey – my only wish would be to have more time with you guys mentoring us. The last six months have been amazing – it just feels like its gone to quick. Michael: What piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to try out for the FAME Team? Casey: I think first all you need to ask yourself why? Why do you want it – what do you want
to get out of it. I guess people have their own reasons for wanting to enter – some will want ‘fame’ and may see it as a golden ticket to get their name out there - looking back that was me at 27 when I first entered, I wanted that instant validation, but it doesn’t work like that. I’d say – use the experience to grow as a person and improve your skill set as hairdresser – it’s an incredible opportunity. I think I speak for the four us as I know we all feel the same ‘just make sure you’re doing it for the right reason – whatever that reason might be – be your authentic self and hopefully you will influence others to go for FAME Team because you had the best experience of your life’ Stay calm – don’t panic – PREPARE – be confident. Gary: Has the FAME Team experience changed you in anyway? Brook: We’ve overcome a lot of obstacles in the past two years – some of which could’ve potentially broken us as a team, but all of this has made me realise that you should never
give up on your dreams. There’s literally nothing I wouldn’t face now. Brandon: I’d never really done much as a team and was a bit of a control freak! So, for me – I’ve learned to let go, be a team player and chill out which has definitely made me a better person. José: The whole process has made me much more focused and determined to succeed. I have much more drive now and want to plan the rest of my career path. Casey: The FAME Team process has taught me people skills and made me more appreciative of work that I wouldn’t normally get. I just feel incredibly lucky to have shared this experience with all of you. Our time with Brooke, Casey, Brandon and José has been short – but we have laughed loads, created some incredible work together, made some amazing memories – but most of all forged friendships that will last a lifetime. F.A.M.E TEAM we salute you! xxx

MARKETING TO GREEN CLIENTS TREE PLANTING
Going green isn’t just good for the environment – it’s good for business and can save you money. A typical salon creates a tremendous amount of waste every day. But with a few adjustments and some smart choices, salons can curb water waste, energy use and chemical by-products to make a big impact on the earth, and a lasting impression on clients. A great resource that Salon Success partners with is Green Salon Collective, a network that helps salons nationwide find the path to sustainability. Founded by environmental experts, hairdressers and eco campaigners they are the original authority on salon sustainability throughout the UK and Ireland, focusing on finding circular solutions for salon waste.
The Tea Tree brand partners with REFOREST’ACTION to plant trees around the world, an initiative that speaks to the hearts of eco-minded clients. Committed to planting 1 million trees by the end of 2022, Tea Tree helps green the globe and makes a lasting impression on eco-conscious clients. Tea Tree partner salons are encouraged to plant a FREE tree online.
Salon Success suggests great ways to ‘green up’ your salon.
RE-PURPOSE Collect salon waste and re-purpose it instead of putting it in a landfill. Gather hair clippings to help soak up oil spills. Recycle used foils into energy and new metals. Neutralise residual dye waste with salts and water, while solid components are diverted to a hazardous waste area.
MERCHANDISING
Communicate your salon’s eco efforts. Utilise sustainable POP, shelving and display units alongside eco-friendly and recycled salon furnishings to highlight Tea Tree’s support of REFOREST’ACTION and how clients can help green the globe. Decorate the salon with succulents and plants to set the tone. Hand every client a Tea Tree Wash House Menu featuring multi-sensory experiences for a spa-like retreat they can’t get anywhere else.
EVENTS Host a VIP event in your salon that includes Tea Tree product giveaways, digital tree plantings, organic refreshments, and on-site yoga or wellness experts. Invite local influencers and offer clients a voucher to return for 10% off their next service.
DIGITAL Download the Tea Tree digital toolkit which includes social media assets and product images to help you promote the brand in your salon. Keep guests and potential guests updated on your events, promotions, sales and the salon’s latest green sustainable developments or offerings.
SAVE ENERGY Implement energy and water-saving systems, which save resources and money.

dispute or expensive legal action if things go wrong. You also need to make sure that any arrangements don’t fall foul of the HMRC rules. If your chair renter appears to have similar rights as an employee, you could be liable for back-dated tax claims and benefits. At this stage, it’s worth pointing out even more potential pitfalls… When working out the length of the contract, you need to have an open discussion about how long you both see the arrangement lasting. Some freelance stylists are in it for life and they just want a safe haven to work from. Others will use this as an opportunity to grow their own client list and with open access to your booking system and database, there is the chance your chair renter could soon be out the door with a whole load of your clients in tow. Think about how you will work out access to your products and equipment; for instance, the multitude of stock required for colour services and how you will manage and incentivise product sales. This is usually accounted for in a rental agreement, but it can get complicated and controversial if not properly considered. On another note, will your self-employed stylist be involved in team activities – industry events and exhibitions, awards, getaways and social gatherings? Possibly most important of all, how do you maintain consistency in your services and protect your salon brand unless your entire team are on board with you? As you won’t be funding their training and development, you can’t guarantee any future development in the same way as you can with a team member. If this is all beginning to sound like a bit of a headache, that’s because – if you ask me – it is. I’m going to be totally honest and say that renting a chair in my salon would not be an option for me. Our job as salon owners is to provide an environment where our teams know they are receiving more benefits than going it alone could ever provide. Doesn’t matter if it’s a budding stylist or someone with loads of experience who has been with you for years – ambition should still be rewarded at any stage of a hair career. At Smith England, for instance, I make sure that everyone is motivated with opportunities for growth and development. Loyalty to my business is reciprocated with a commitment to their careers. If that same person became self-employed, it would turn things a little too grey for my liking. Please think carefully before you go down the path of chair rental – there are some great resources on the NHBF website if you need further information. When all is said and done, I honestly don’t think anyone comes out of it better off. To me, you will only ever maintain your salon standards, guarantee your clients the best experience and build your brand with a fully invested and fully employed team.
As one of the “Does it make good business sense to most respected names rent out one or more of the chairs in in the hairdressing world, my salon? Since the pandemic I’ve found more and more staff are Phil Smith has built salon considering going self-employed. empires, launched multi-million Maybe this is the best solution for everyone?” selling haircare ranges and won PHIL SAYS: countless awards for his business “I built my career on taking risks, acumen. Here, he tackles your grabbing opportunities and making bold business choices. It’s true when tricky post-Pandemic they say that risk comes with great business issues... reward. Not always opting for the ‘safe option’ can result in a positive outcome and when you put yourself out on a limb, the gains can be huge. Stepping out of the comfort zone of being an employed stylist and making your own way in the hair world as a freelancer is perhaps seen as a sure path to success. But – there’s a massive ‘but’ – I always tell anyone in our industry who asks me about going self-employed to think very, very carefully about it. Let’s look at the pros and cons. For many people, the tipping point for going self-employed is when they’ve built a bit of a private client list and as well as maybe wanting a better work/life balance they also want greater financial gains for the service they’re providing. I understand that. In addition, a self-employed stylist will imagine they can be their own boss, choose their hours, set their prices and many other things that imply total freedom. Yes, less hours or taking annual leave whenever you like may feel like a bonus, but don’t forget those hours not worked will be unpaid. There is no sick pay or staff benefits and there are plenty of additional costs besides. An accountant to file your tax return, indemnity insurances, pensions, equipment and training will suddenly need to be covered by you. Take all that into account and the picture starts to look a little less appealing. So now, from a salon owner’s perspective – does renting out a chair in your salon to a freelance stylist make good sense? Well, it offers you a passive income from their takings, of course, and you’ll minimise staff costs such as sick pay, holiday pay, pensions, maternity cover and National Insurance. There are a variety of set-ups to consider including a percentage agreement where you receive a cut of the takings or a fixed rent based on an agreed monthly income. Some salon owners choose to do a mix of both and take a rental fee plus a percentage. In all cases, you need a watertight contract to avoid any

YOUR WELLBEING GURU Author of The BEST POSSIBLE you, and founder of The Gut Clinic, Hannah Richards, Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Coach has spent over a decade making it her IT STARTS mission to make nutrition and WITH YOU... health synonymous. Her advice – I have a client who keep it simple, eat organic and eat goes to the hairdressers or did seasonally is her heartbeat before COVID five days – and can so easily a week. She would become yours. invariably go for a blow-dry. When her hairdresser moved from around the corner, so too did she. A trip to the hairdressers may also be a manicure or a pedicure, but most of all, it is a beautiful venture of self-care. A day out, something to look forward to, a date in the diary, a relaxing treat, an event! The experience starts with a smile from the receptionist, welcoming you into the hub that may be your home for the next hour or three! Your coat’s hung, and you’re led to a comfy armchair and offered a drink. It’s the little things like the biscuit or the chocolate on the side that make you feel immediately unique. You know what we need, what style suits, which tone will complement and which cut will marry our personality. The hairdresser’s work begins. As we sit down in the therapist chair, a sigh of relief exhales whilst you, gorgeous clever you, do your magic. You are listening to every movement of our week and advising at every step of the way. As we, the customer, waffle on about the trials and tribulations of our lives looking for advice and pearls of wisdom, as you, the hairdresser, effortlessly and delicately carve our new look and outlook for the next six weeks.
A day on your feet means an evening on your bum! Plan well after a long shift at work—dinner with a friend or cook for a friend.
Empty the bone: Perhaps your shift has felt like you are a therapist. Don’t go home with this on your shoulders. Instead, go to the gym, do a dance class, have a swim or a walk in the park. It is always a good idea to separate work and play and not filter into each other.
Keep it fruity: Get your boss to order a daily box of fruit for the staff, so there is always something quenching and nutrient-dense to keep your energy levels up. The meal of kings and queens: Never leave the house without eating breakfast. It will set you up for the day and will most definitely take care of your endless snacking or sugar cravings. Get an early night: You will be at your best if you are in bed by 10.30 pm. It is the time that we physically repair. The hours after midnight will only leave you feeling tired and irritated the next day.
Have something to look forward to in the week: It may be a girls or boys night out at the weekend, an open water swim, a new pair of shoes or dinner at a new restaurant. Whatever tickles your tail feather, make sure you are looking after yourself!
Try a new recipe once a week. Increase your culinary skills.
Batch cook: This is a great Sunday evening activity. Throw a load of chicken wings and drum sticks in a dish, scatter with seasonal vegetables that bake well, grate ginger, peel the garlic, add a tin of tomatoes and basil over the top and bake.
Always have a bottle of water with you and if you Do you care for yourself as much as you do your clients? You may well be the exception to the rule, but if you are not, let me give back to you on behalf of all the men and women out there who have sat in your chair; looking for answers to their woes, just needing someone to listen, being touched, looked in the eye, told they are beautiful and mainly just heard.
don’t like water, add a dash of elderflower cordial. It is easy to drink too much tea and coffee, which will dehydrate you and make you anxious. Health must be the top priority in our life’s. It’s a gift, and there is so much more you will see if you prioritise it! Here’s to you. x

DRESS TO IMPRESS
BEST INTENTIONS… Talking of ‘fake it until you make it’, if you know you’re going to make an effort, even if for no particular reason, you’re setting an intention to step up. Whether it’s for a day in the salon or an occasion which requires you to smarten up, or simply that you want to feel better today, you’re making a deliberate choice and change in your behaviour. It’s a bit like segmenting your day, or drawing a line in the sand. You’re saying ‘that was then, this is now’ and your clothes will make that statement far more clearly than a half-hearted decision. If you’re smartening up for a day in the salon, it gets noticed so you’ll feel much more like you’re playing the part of someone who makes an effort, rather than just going through the motions of every day salon life
Phil Collins says how your grooming and clothing show you mean business to your clients.
With TV shows like The Apprentice being popular on our screens, they are the epitome of sharp suits implying the presence of a sharp mind. That’s probably not what you’re aiming for on a Saturday down the pub watching the footy, but even then, how you dress is far more than just a fashion statement. Your appearance gives your secrets away – your personality, values, attitudes, interests, goals etc can all come through in how you dress and carry yourself. The cliché of ‘cloned professionals’ who take themselves uber seriously can suck the life out of us but there’s definitely something to be said about making a bit more of an effort...
FIRST CLASS THINKING... We all know that feeling when we get suited and booted for a special occasion – if we have made that extra effort we feel fantastic for it. It all starts with you, so if you think you are worth making a bit of an effort for, it will filter through in everything else that you do – from how you value yourself, through to how you walk and talk your way through your day and indeed with your clients. If you want to feel that little bit extra special today, start with your clothes and of course your hair!
FEELING FABULOUS... It may seem like it’s the same thing as first class thinking but the emphasis here is that making that effort will have you feeling far better than if you didn’t. More to the point though, if life is feeling a bit ‘meh’ at the moment, it’s too easy to slip into a place where you kind of stop caring so much about your self-care. Whether it’s a case of ‘fake it till you make it’ or simply a way of cheering yourself up, stepping up a notch with your appearance will really help to lift yourself on the greyest of days and your colleagues. Not only will you have achieved something that day by getting yourself looking sharp, you’ve taken control of the start of your day instead of it taking control of you. The compound effect of this is pretty powerful too, because once we’ve completed one thing, we tend to want to move onto another and it creates a great momentum which you’ll not want to waste. Start as you mean to go on and all that…
STAND OUT IN A CROWD… Rightly or wrongly, appearances matter and you are definitely judged on your appearance, especially in the hairdressing world. Whether you care about this or not is a different matter of course but you’ll never avoid it happening. They say you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, so make sure your appearance matches how you want to be seen. Look at yourself through other people’s eyes to see how you are perceived by others. Think about how you want your clients to see you. For instance, if you are looking to get promoted at work, being seen as someone who regularly makes an effort with their appearance shows a reliability and presence which will serve you well when it comes to potential promotions in your salon. Nobody is saying you need to be in Gucci every day, but if you’re naturally creative for instance, which most hairdressers are, then making an effort will mean that little pieces of your personality make it into your grooming and outfits and people start to really get a feel for who you are underneath it all.
AN EXPERT OPINION… Last but not least, as you are a hairdresser and work in a salon, it is essential that your hair, nails and make-up are on point at all times. Remember great hair gives you the confidence to rule the world! As a stylist, changing your hair cut or colour is a fantastic way of injecting some energy into your appearance and behaviour. Your regular clients will notice so it instigates conversations and interaction – it shows your clients that you take pride in your appearance and you like to pack a little punch. creative@hairuncut.com https://hairuncut.com

ONE PRICE FITS ALL CALLUM STANDEN-MAY, CO-OWNER OF STANDENMAY SALON
Genderless pricing is a hot topic at the moment. Is it something you are considering if you haven’t made the move already? We asked two successful salon owners for their thoughts on why they have opted for genderless pricing,
Many salons are now starting to look at genderless pricing structures and at STANDENMAY we are delighted this is something we decided upon for our salon. From doing this we are able to simplify our cuts to make sure our clients only pay for how long our stylists spend on their hair. A ‘short cut’ means any style that’s pixie length or shorter, sculpted around the head or cut with clippers, and a ‘long cut’ means anything longer than a pixie length look, including BRIAN ‘LEO’ McCALLUM, technical cropped bobs. OWNER OF ROAR HAIR AND BEAUTY At STANDENMAY gender is irrelevant to us and we From the day we opened we offered want to better reflect a modern society, whereby the gender-neutral pricing. When working structure allows us to base the price on the client’s on our salon in the planning stages, needs rather than their gender. With us having a one of the most important things was genderless pricing structure, we are able to take into our decision to offer gender neutral account what needs to be done to their hair in terms of pricing – it was a perfect fit for us at ROAR Hair and Beauty. As a cutting and styling judging by the length and price this brand we believe wholeheartedly in inclusivity, respecting others accordingly for the work that has been carried out and and encouraging and celebrating individuality. It’s 2021 and in the time of the stylist, which is a lot more fair on both our opinion, it’s time we changed how we do certain things as the clients and our stylists. an industry. For us, our price list was one of these things. Lots of For some time many salons have had separate gents have long hair and lots of ladies have shorter hair. THE PRICE IS RIGHT Creating a pricing structure and communicating your pricing with clients can be uncomfortable. With inflation steadily rising month on month, and with supply shortages, regular price changes are set to continue. Brexit and COVID are getting the blame however salon owners don’t want to keep changing their prices every time a supplier imposes a change. Victoria is calling for a change in our mindsets about how we price and more education for the consumer. Back in June she shared her IGTV post (click to watch video) explaining why the price rises are happening and broke down the many factors that go into their pricing as well as quarterly reviews from their own suppliers. Everything from the small things like cardboard for packaging, the processing from labour to electricity rises through to the shipping costs with fuel rises and increasing demand for freight. “Everyone wants to look their best and feel good about themselves and treat themselves to hair and beauty. However, they need to expect that it comes with a price tag in the same was as any luxury brand. The end user is the one that will be paying for the accumulation of all the price rises right through the supply chain.” She continues to explain; at the heart of everything is the quality and sourcing of the hair as the raw material. To have the longer, and lighter shades, customers need to appreciate that this is an organic, natural material that is grown. For example, the popular 24” length extensions can take at least seven years to grow. Hair is becoming a scarce commodity. The hair processing is with skilled labour and a long process to gently work with the hair and so very labour intensive to ensure the hair quality and create all the different shades and products. The clients wanting this hair need to understand that this commands a higher price tag. If wearers can invest in the best hair quality they can afford, then combined with an impeccable aftercare routine, they should be able to get more wear from the initial investment. As an example, their Elegance hair range recommends that with good aftercare they should have at least 12 months wear from the hair. The brand has even introduced their Hairsurance® scheme which guarantees the product to reassure stylists and consumers. This would also mean that wearers become more mindful to look to only purchase new hair annually, or even longer, and for stylists to support them with good homecare advice and maintenance appointments to re-fit and re-tip hair when needed. This refreshingly transparent approach resonated with stylists encouraging them to share this information too. Chantelle Rason, a Remi Cachet Super Stylist from Unbeweavable Hair Salon in St Osyth, took to social to explain to her clients Chantelle Rason too (click to watch video).
Increasing your pricing is a conversation you need to have.
Victoria Lynch, founder of Remi Cachet, feels we need to talk about and educate our clients about the value of the products and service we offer here in in the hair industry. CLICK HERE TO WATCH VICKY’S VIDEO OR GO TO WWW.RDR.LINK/HE010
“Let’s not forget the time, effort, and process that goes into growing amazing quality hair. People don’t see all your other business running costs such as card transaction fees, insurance, accountancy fees etc. The list really does go on. Please respect the prices a little more and be more mindful for the hair you are buying to make it last longer.”

commodity. For example, the Elegance Hair range lasts up to 12 months with good care, and Luxury Hair range lasts at least nine months with care. This is reflecting in the pricing. Quote not only for the hair fitting but the ongoing maintenance costs so they understand the complete commitment. They need to appreciate the work, time and skill that goes into making them look good when they leave the salon. Spend time educating clients in good aftercare with the correct products and reasons to return on time for maintenance appointments. This would help keep their hair for longer and where the initial costs will then seem more reasonable over time. Different stylists and salons will command different pricing structures depending on their costs and locations. The value of the hairdresser, the service they offer in terms of time and skill level, needs to have a change in mindset from the consumer to appreciate this more too. The hair extension sector, like other industries, will continue to see volatility in their pricing and this will all be passed down to the consumer and possibly in steep rises hikes on those a handful of products that take more time to create. Sharing what you know and what goes into the pricing will help justify the costs to your clients. It’s also a chance to be more creative with the budgets they have, to encourage them to opt for shorter lengths or take much better care of their hair so that it lasts. BUSINESS
TRIPLE THREAT “I knew from research I undertook before opening that clients don’t like being passed from person to person during their appointment,” says Melissa. “So since day one, we’ve guaranteed that every member of the team does it all. They stay with their client from start to finish, which means they can really build a relationship and enjoy a relaxing appointment.” As well as providing a point of difference in the salon, Melissa’s ‘do it all’ approach has benefits across the board for both clients and the team.
At Melissa Timperley eponymous salon in the heart of Manchester, every member of the team is a triple threat: they cut, colour and style.
The Personal Touch The client/hairdresser relationship is a special one, and by staying with the same person throughout your appointment, you’re able to make it even better and stronger. No matter who you book in with, they’ll do every element of the service: cutting, colouring, washing the hair, doing the head massage, styling and blow-drying. You’re together for a longer period of time, which helps develop a trusting, intimate partnership. In turn, this means clients are happier, better looked after and often more open to new services or styles.
A Bespoke Service When one person is responsible for every aspect of the service, it means there’s less confusion and miscommunication. You don’t need to explain to another member of the team what you’re doing – or have the colour you’ve just applied cut out! It also means no-one feels they’re getting short changed; sometimes if you book in with a salon owner, someone else will wash the hair and another person will blow-dry – it’s just the cut that’s with the person you booked with. With us, whoever you book with does it all.
Team Benefits The personal touch is a staff perk as well as a client benefit. It means nobody is rushed off their feet and they have some downtime while a colour develops. They might just sit down or have a proper lunch break, or use the time to do client notes or some social media. By not expecting them to multi-task, they have better balance and more time and energy. It also means they might only see two or three clients a day and still be fully booked, so they feel more relaxed and focussed.
Creating An Atmosphere A more relaxed team means a calmer, more peaceful atmosphere in the salon. Because we aren’t juggling multiple clients at once, things run really smoothly and ensure the atmosphere is calm, laidback and relaxing. Clients can really switch off and feel pampered, because they know they’re the centre of attention.
COVID Safe In the wake of COVID, our personalised approach also feels safer for everyone. You’re with one person from start to finish, and not moving around different stations, so there’s an enhanced sense of security and peace of mind.

As a team we all have our own strengths and I really believe you can see this in the collection! The energy and the day flowed perfectly it was so much fun! The images are above any expectation I had!
CASEY We’ve already made history as the first FAME team to be together for two years… but going through the pandemic together has definitely given us a bond that will continue for life. I didn’t really think we’d become so close, especially over zoom/WhatsApp, but coming back from being in lockdown and having our first date together on set with Gary and Michael was like we had never been apart. There was a vibration of positive energy on the shoot, helping each other when needed, and all on the same level of creativity – it just worked! I mean… proof is in the pudding hun! We’re finalists for Artistic Team of the year at the British Hairdressing Awards. I feel like we’ve earned our place throughout our time together. I’m just gutted it’s coming to an end.
JOSÉ Working together under the guidance of Michael and Gary was amazing, especially after so much time apart – it felt like we work together all the time. We all complement each other really well and our styles fit perfectly. We had the best day – we laughed loads and created some amazing looks. The whole team was felt super inspired and everything just flowed. We are beyond thrilled with the collection – it’s a great representation of who we are as a team but also as individuals. Becoming finalists for Art Team in the BHA’s is simply the icing on the cake!
BRANDON I loved working with Hooker & Young, I’m familiar with their work and standards so I instantly knew we would produce something special. Michael and Gary are a dream to work with and amazing mentors. COVID hasn’t been the best to everyone but boy oh boy did we make the most out of the hand we were dealt. So much so we are up for BHA Artistic Team of the Year! What an achievement.

Technique
STEP 1: Prep with Defy Damage ProSeries 1. Shake the can vigorously and then spray in short bursts to 2-inch sections and comb for even distribution. Make sure to spray away from the face for client comfort.
STEP 2: Defy Damage works right away. you will see immediate shine and softness. ProSeries 1 is an easy one step spray that requires NO formula changes, NO mixing, NO developer changes and NO timing changes. This step will help provide greater and more even lift and colour deposit as well as make the hair 5x stronger while providing 80% less breakage.
STEP 3: Apply Formula 1 to the base throughout the entire head.
STEP 4: When applying colour at the front, make sure you take diagonal back partings so that all sections stay nice and clean and away from the face.
STEP 5: Section a triangle out from the fringe. Take a horseshoe section out from the arch of the brows that extends below the crown in the back.
STEP 6: Working on one side of the fringe at a diagonal, take weave partings and apply Formula 3 below the regrowth formula through the ends.
STEP 7: Continue working with weave partings, adding babylights. The amount you add should be based on client consultation, hair type and density and the fringe length. Adding too many babylights on a short fringe will create spots or a banding look.
STEP 8: Working with a fine weave parting that starts at the ear to the horseshoe parting, apply Formula 3 from growth through the ends. Don’t overlap the two formulas.
STEP 9: Continue taking diagonal back weave highlights working off the horseshoe section.
STEP 10: Repeat on the other side

STEP 11: Apply Formula 2 to the rest of the hair melting into the base.
STEP 12: Process for 35 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo.
STEP 13: Apply Formula 5 in a teardrop method and Formula 6 through the mids and ends.

STEP 14: Process for 5-15 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo. Apply Defy Damage ProSeries 2 on damp and process for 5 mins. Rinse and style as desired.

home What they’re watching, reading and doing. This month it’s Jack Merrick-Thirlway, Creative Director of Neville Hair & Beauty…
The Boxset The Sopranos One of the best TV series ever with the most accurate cast. I have watched this boxset three or four times at least and love it the same every time. A New York crime lord leading his gang through the city whilst dealing with his own anxiety and problems.
The Playlist /Album The Book I kill by Giorgio Faletti This book was recommended to me by a friend when I lived in St Barts. Set in the most glamorous of destinations, Monte Carlo, a crime investigation about an enigmatic FBI agent cracking down on his most harrowing case to date.
My music taste is very eclectic and can change from R&B to 80s to soul all within the space of three songs. At the moment I love Jack Harlow and JP Cooper: Two very different artists but incredibly talented. Depending on the mood these would be my two go-to albums of the moment.
The Film Point Break
The Game Rummikub A brilliant game introduced to me by my sister-in-law during lockdown, a numbers game, simple but fun! I now think all members of my family and my fiancé’s family have it. The Rummikub bug is a must!
This film has been a favourite since I was very young. Patrick Swayze plays the coolest bank robbing/surfer whilst Keanu Reeves is the young cop trying to break into Swayze’s gang to bring them all to justice. Little does he know he would enjoy the buzz and become a part of the crew.

Errol Douglas MBE needs no introdu ction! Pro Hair are delighted to have this ‘man about town’, on our team for 2021. He brings us just what we need, a little ‘eye on theprize’, a smattering of ‘ones to watch’ and some very meaningful motivational tools that we can ado pt to make this year happen for each and every one of us. Follow him on Instagram: erroldouglashair
Thank you Can you remember when July and August were a time for meeting up with family and friends and travelling to far flung places – not anymore! Doesn’t seem to be a month in the year now when things quieten down, relax a little and give you time to re-adjust, renew, revive. Madness! Having said that, hopefully with the pandemic now behind us – or well on its way – we can celebrate the fact that the majority of us have got our businesses back – and that feels so good! It’s not been easy – in fact it’s hard to believe that this time last year we were all sitting at home waiting for the world to tell us what to do… I thank God daily that is in our past. I am not alone I’m sure by being truly thankful on a daily basis to the fact that we live where we live and have the team that are the NHS truly supporting us.
Back on platform I’ve been so privileged to educate around the globe – can’t wait until that time comes around again! I’ve done shows in Austraila, Italy, the USA and Russia and I’ve really missed the buzz of it all! My advice to all you budding presenters – stay focused, believe that you can achieve the highest level and surround yourself with others that believe in you and don’t ever stray from your goal. It’s so important to have a vision when you are on your journey.
Back on set OH WHAT A FEELING! Absolutely fabulous to get back on set to do my entry for British Hairdresser of the Year. Never gets any easier – and you’d think, blessed with so much time on my hands I’d have had it all sorted (in my mind). Fellow creatives will understand it when I say – we all want to be game changers – and to be asked to present your thoughts, ideas and vision to carry through in 2022 – for the British Hairdressing Awards is no mean feat. You are literally laid bare – open to criticism, open to applause – in your attempt to win this coveted title. Having just shot my collection – I’m delighted with the results – but couldn’t have done it without the collaboration of a strong team of makeup artist, stylist and photographer. Teamwork doth make my dream work.
AFRO Workshop I’m passionate that all hairdressers should be proficient in all hair types. It was great to spend the day with the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s F.A.M.E. Team for an Afro Workshop held at my Errol Douglas salon. My hat goes off to F.A.M.E. Team members Brooke Evans; Casey Coleman, Brandon Messenger and José Domene and a big thank you to Jacqui McIntosh for joining us as the educational expert from Avlon UK.
Wedding belles At Errol Douglas we have our own Head of Bridal, Anna Baker, who ensures the smooth running of each event. What salon doesn’t love a wedding! Welcome back to the Wedding Season! Over 264,000 weddings were postponed due to the pandemic in 2020 alone – this including the 278,000 recently engaged couples who are planning to marry in 2021 and beyond – that’s a lot of people wanting their hair done! If you consider that each wedding on average invites 100 guests – this constitutes one hell of a lot of people that will be wanting their hair looking good to celebrate this occasion. Are you ready for Wedding season?
Infringe Great to be able to take a step back in time with my feature for Infringe magazine in which I credit my father’s creativity as the driving force behind my early interest in hair. He was such a visual person – always bringing home magazines, books, and was really into the arts. I was the only kid in my class that poured over magazines. I’ve got a lot to thank Dillon Churchill Douglas for – he opened a whole new world to me.
Always remember people that have helped you along the way.
