And just like that, we’re back! With Auld Lang Syne still ringing in our ears, we find ourselves in 2022 – let’s hope it’s a good one for everyone! It’s a New Year and a new look for us. Professional Hairdresser has been refreshed with a cleaner design including new logo, new fonts and exciting new layouts, all created for easier navigation if you are reading the magazine on a phone or tablet. Reacting to reader behaviour, attention spans and your precious time, our new visual identity will still deliver professional, hair-related content that will be cross fed across all our media channels. To give you an example – we will still be bringing you current and relevant business articles but in a more condensed and easier-to-read format on the pages of the magazine with a click through to our website where you will find a more in-depth version of that article to read at your leisure. We’re easing you into January with a somewhat black & white issue – all the inspirational collections have been shot in black & white as we discuss the benefits of doing so. To work alongside this, we look at grey hair and ask the question “is grey hair becoming a badge of honour?” Has it has finally shaken the stigma that has long been attached to it? The industry has said yes and clients seem to be following suit. Enjoy the new look!

Luncheon goes live and celebrates 75! After a virtual Awards in 2020, the Fellowship was back with a glittering Luncheon & Awards at its new home, The Londoner, in Leicester Square. President Ken Picton and Chancellor Ashleigh Hodges welcomed some 420 guests to the Ballroom, to celebrate the past 75 years and get ready for an exciting future. “We have faced the worst, but we came out as the best,” Ken said. “What doesn’t challenge you doesn’t change you and we have embraced the changes while living by our core values.” Chairman Barry Stephens paid respect to those in the industry we had lost this year, while presenting a special Fellow of Distinction to Chris Williams from Rush Hair & Beauty, accepted by Andy Heasman. He also
presented a cheque for £3,720 to the Hair & Beauty Charity for money raised through the special 2021 Yearbook.

Melissa Timperley
If the closure of salons last year didn’t get your mature clients thinking about trading in the hair dye for the natural look, the number of celebs who’ve taken the plunge surely will have. Andie MacDowell, Jodie Foster and most recently Dawn French are all embracing their silver strands with pride and it got us thinking about how you guys approach the tricky subject of going natural in your salons. Here, some champions of grey impart their wisdom on talking to clients, transitioning from colour, and of course how to care for grey hair.
Are the reports true? Are your mature clients proudly embracing their natural colour? Melissa Timperley
“Having grey/white hair on my older clients definitely isn’t as much of a concern as it used to be,” says Terry Longden, Matrix Artists and salon owner. Barry Maddocks, Creative Director of Haringtons agrees, “I love that we are seeing more and more clients embracing their natural grey. As hairdressers we must understand that the transition to that stunning grey can be very daunting, especially when growing out an existing colour. We see a lot of celebrities embracing their grey especially after lockdown so it’s no wonder we are finding our clients are asking for this too.”
Barry Maddocks
Melissa Timperley
How do you approach a consultation involving transitioning to grey? Do you have any tips for talking to clients? Melissa Timperley of Melissa Timperley, Manchester advises, “Transitioning to grey doesn’t have to be difficult for clients. Reassure them by talking them through the process and the aftercare needed to get them to their dream grey. They need to know that it’s a process that won’t happen overnight. They need a super good haircut to carry off grey hair and they need to invest in great aftercare products to keep their hair in good condition, but most of all they need a hairdresser they can trust!” “Don’t categorise and don’t make assumptions,” says Inanch Emir of Inanch London. “Even if a client’s hair is ageing, make sure they don’t feel categorised as anything other than themselves. It’s all about suitability and individuality – never assume what they want, listen and go from there. Some client’s choose to cover
their greys to feel their best and others feel empowered when transitioning to grey – where often we’ll add a mixture of highlights and lowlights to give the most flattering look. It’s also a misconception that as a woman ages she must opt for a shorter cut. Extensions whether for volume or length can have an instant age-reversing effect whatever the colour.” “When I talk to my clients about transitioning from full coloured hair to a softer colour, I talk about introducing some of their natural sparkle…aka grey! I started calling it natural sparkle as clients need to enjoy the journey of growing out their colour and embracing their natural tone,” says Peter Mellon, Salon Partner with Medusa. David Corbett of David Corbett Hairdressing adds, “We don’t refer to it as grey, we always refer to their hair as natural.”
13
012_PHR_JAN22_Layout 1 23/12/2021 12:33 Page 14
How do you go about the process of transitioning from coloured hair to natural? “There are a few options,” says Terry Longen. “The first is to just go for it! This can be a full day in the salon, stripping colour out, then bleaching then toning then a strict regime of salon and at-home maintenance to keep this new silver hair looking expensive and in peak condition after all it’s been through. The initial outlay is expensive for the client and you will need all your hair knowledge at the ready to execute this and constantly explain what you’re doing and why. This will instil client confidence and assure they’re in good hands and will adhere to the aftercare advised.” Peter Mellon
Peter Mellon
“Or you can cut a lot off and keep growing the roots through and show your client how to be creative with how they wear their hair, using wash out root retouch products when they want to feel their best at important meetings or nights out,” says Carolyn Newman, HAIRDOTCOM’s Educational Manager,“You can soften the regrowth line by adding highlights and lowlights thoughout.” Terry also champions the ‘Ease In’, “This is probably the longest but easiest option for your client to transition to their natural grey. Basically, match up the depths and tones that are in the natural and old colour, then put lowlights of the fading tones in at the natural areas and highlight the remaining areas to give a more balanced result. My tip is each time you lowlight make sure to match up to the new ‘faded’ tone and not the original, this will help speed up the process.”
Inanch Emir
What about at home maintenance? “It’s definitely important to educate your clients on looking after mature hair,” says Inanch Emir. “Whatever the client’s age, beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp. Grey hair doesn’t mean unhealthy hair and it should still be radiant and shine. Grey hair can be prone to picking up unwanted tones from pollution and often moisture needs to be packed back into the hair and scalp through oils and deep conditioning which all need to be part of the tailored aftercare programme.” Carolyn Newman adds, “If your client has a warm skin tone they will need to have a toner or gloss over their grey to add a beige or honey tone otherwise it can drain their complexion. If they have
a cool skin tone they can wear it naturally grey or have ash or steel blonde tones.” “And the silver-grey client should be going home from the salon with a bag-full of retail products for upkeep between visits,” says Victor Pajak of Headquarters Hair Salon. “Grey hair is coarser in texture, so I advise a rich, nourishing hair mask once a week. I also advise a purple shampoo to help keep unwanted brassy tones under control between toner applications. And, finally, I always advise heat-protecting oil – grey hair is more susceptible to heat damage. With grey hair it’s all about keeping it hydrated, so that it has a healthy youthful shine.”

Going Grey TIM SCOTT-WRIGHT is an award-winning hairstylist, known for his editorial hair looks, creative colour and unique collections. However, in his salon, Tim is the master of the mature client.
Embracing any natural hair colour has grown in popularity over the last year or so. We’re working with more clients to incorporate their natural tones. With our mature clients, lockdown made them more comfortable with their grey hair, and we are helping them to transition without losing their identity or feeling ‘old’.
Tim’s Top Tips 씰 When deciding when to ‘go grey,’ Tim believes it’s all about timing. “It’s not a one size (or age) fits all solution and different people will reach that point at different times, depending on the growth pattern of the hair. Ideally, clients should be around 50% grey to really commit to growing out colour completely.” 씰 Tim suggests that clients and stylists should look at celebrities for inspiration, such as Prue Leith who has a white hairline and incorporates that into her hair style with a darker hair towards the back. Helen Mirren is also a great example of embracing natural white hair in a modern way. 씰 The transition to grey all depends on the base colour and in Tim’s experience, if someone wants to grow out a full head colour, then leaving longer between appointments is recommended. While growing colour out to reveal natural white or grey hair, Tim says that highlights and low lights are a great way to break up solid colour and create a more seamless transition. Clients with longer hair may want to go for the chop to speed up the process.
씰 A ‘power cut’ as Tim calls it is a great way to embrace natural grey hair without feeling too old, think Sharon Stone or Jane Fonda. Along with this Tim encourages his clients to think about styling. With any hair colour change, clients may want to adapt their make-up and clothes. Dressing in bold or block colours look great with grey hair and can help clients feel like they are making a statement rather than fading away. Tim says that there is a financial impact to clients no longer wanting colour but believes that the most important thing is treating your client as an individual, listening to them, and creating hair that makes them look and feel great. This thoughtful style of service breeds loyalty and loyalty means a successful, busy salon. He adds, “Of course, colouring hair is one of our salon’s biggest sources of revenue. However, as one client decides to embrace their natural grey, another client walks through the door. It’s all about balance and the most important thing is that we are offering the services and expertise for each individual client, no matter which stage of their hair journey they are currently on.”

A moment in
In this special black and white issue, we have carefully chosen all the imagery to suit and we speak to award-winning photographer and hairdresser Michael Young about the difference between working in black and white as opposed to colour. What is it about black and white photography that makes it so different to colour? Black and white pictures can be far more interesting to look at – you are forced to focus on the image without being distracted by colour, making the pictures more emotive – it’s just something that happens when you strip away the colour from an image. Your eyes are no longer drawn to any specific part of the picture, allowing you to imagine what the colours might be – makes it more subjective I guess, everyone can see something different. There’s a truth to black and white that’s hard to capture in colour a colour photograph. For decades portrait photography has largely been black and white due to the raw emotion you can capture within in the image – it has a real honesty and authenticity to it, I think.
Q
David Corbett
Which of your black and white photographs is your favourite? I haven’t taken it yet – I always strive to be better.
Q
씰 Black and white imagery can still
have a feeling of colour, imagined through the many shades of grey seen in a picture. The use of colour within the hair, styling, and make-up will help create a multi-layered feeling of depth and texture. Josh Goldsworthy
Do you prefer to shoot in black and white? No, I wouldn’t say I prefer it as commercially I shoot more in colour – however, I feel black and white photography can be far more thought provoking. It’s less about what you first see and more about how you see it. When you think about it – black and white are the opposite of each and both represent very different emotions. I like to capture a feeling rather than a look within a picture, I think this is easier achieved when shooting in black and white.
Q
Things to consider when choosing to go black and white
씰 Monochrome photography cannot
be achieved by simply removing the colour from an image. You really need to have all your elements in black and white to get that high contrast result. 씰 Decide what it is you’re shooting
for – although black and white can be very beautiful, it can also be more intense and not always suitable for what you want. 씰 Make sure you have a great team
on side – it’s vital that everyone involved is onboard with the concept and brief. Story boards are vital for this and can be used as reference points on the day.

ollection
As its name suggests, Jonathan Turner’s Achromic collection is deliberately devoid of colour for a focus that’s purely on shape and texture. Perfectly in tune with the make-up and styling, the texture, shape and finish of each hair look is the focal point that defines the image. Without the use of colour, Jonathan relies on skilful styling techniques on well-crafted haircuts to deliver this visually strong collection.

Six contemporary images which live up to their individualistic name tag. The three cuts show bold shapes featuring internal texturising, revisiting classic looks from bygone decades, and giving them a modern twist through the cutting techniques used and contemporary styling.

FITfor BUSINESS Here, Phil Smith tackles another of your tricky post-Pandemic business issues...
I’m nervous about putting up the prices in my salon, but with costs rising and the pressures of paying my team enough to keep them, I feel like I have no other option. What are your thoughts on charging more so I can afford to pay competitive wages?
PHIL SAYS:
Let me start by saying you’re not the only one facing this dilemma right now. Directly after the Pandemic there was a lot of uncertainty about how our businesses would recover. To a degree we’re still finding out what the long-term effects will be. Many things went on hold – pay rises being one – but as we look ahead and work out what 2022 will bring, it’s time to focus on making money rather than just surviving. Here are my tips….
씰 Be on top of costs and outgoings in your business and think about all the costs you know you can control. For instance, if your rent isn’t fixed, negotiate it now. Landlords want secure tenants and you want certainty for your business. 씰 Your stock should also be factored as a controllable cost. Know what your salon uses and sells on a monthly basis and investigate and negotiate on your current deals with suppliers. I’ve talked about it before but be rigorous about wastage and make sure your team are on board with that too. 씰 After all of your other costs, the next and usually biggest outgoing is your wage bill and there is no magic formula to work out what you should be paying someone. Loyalty works both ways and I
strongly recommend looking after your team. Which brings me back to the original question. Should you put up your prices? 씰 You must price for profit, ie; 10 to 15% profit margin after your other costs have been absorbed - and that includes leaving enough in the budget to make sure your team are getting a fair reward. 씰 After considering all of the above, it may well be time to charge more for your services so you can pay your team more. 씰 My suggestion is to give everyone – your team and your clients – time to adjust rather than make the change overnight. 씰 I strongly believe that when you charge more, you should give more and there are some relatively low cost ways of instigating this that will appear priceless. 씰 My final point is if your staff are leaving, you need to ask why. Very rarely is it due to money, so you need to dig a little deeper to find out the real reasons and fix them.

THE hybrid HAIRDRESSER Leicestershire salon owner Barrie Stephen reveals how to offer a flexible salon role post-pandemic, without compromising your business and by valuing the salon stylist in new ways.
RE-THINK THE TRADITIONAL SALON WORK WEEK This is an opportunity to build back in a way that is better for everyone. Look at the shape of your week and determine where there are gaps or where things could be rearranged. Everybody is working more flexibly now – staff and clients alike – so being open minded and reworking the salon diary could be more effective – both from a time and cost perspective.
RE-ASSESS SALON ROLES
As with so many industries, hairdressing is constantly evolving and consequently, so too are our roles. It’s vital to acknowledge new ways of working that benefit the salon in the long term, as well as new elements of roles which are key to the success of your salon but can be done remotely. For example, creating content for the salon’s social media is now an essential part of any hairdressing business but can be done from home. And participating in session work and shoots away from the salon helps build your salon profile and helps your business remain relevant. Recognising the breadth of a stylist’s role is not only essential in planning the working week but is also important in gaining their loyalty and respect.
MAKE THE SALON AN EXCITING PLACE TO BE
ENSURE YOUR SALON CULTURE IS ON POINT
Give your employees a reason to stay loyal – and attract new stylists to help grow your business. Provide regular, relevant education in trending techniques and products with the support of your manufacturer. Encourage your team to enter industry competitions and showcase salon mentors who have done great things. This not only serves to motivate the team but can also attract a buzz – both locally and within the industry – helping grow your profile.
Are you a welcoming, inclusive space where people feel safe and inspired to do their best work? Much has changed in the space of a few years and the future of any salon business relies on an open-minded attitude and a positive and proactive approach to embracing people’s differences. Take pride in the diversity and individuality of your team – a stylist that feels ‘seen’ is far more likely to stay loyal.
To read Barrie’s article in full click here.
COMMUNICATE!
Showcase how your salon is different publicly. Use social media to celebrate the things that you do away from the salon – for your employees, for the community, for your clients. Communication is also essential within a successful salon team. Sit down regularly to discuss what they want from their career and how you can help them achieve it. Investing in an individual is only a risk if they don’t see a future at your salon. Give them reasons to stick around!
HOW I’VE MADE IT WORK Almost two years on from the beginning of the pandemic, I believe that the ‘Hybrid Hairdresser’ model provides security and flexibility in an ever-evolving and fast-paced industry. Making changes to your business and opening yourself up to new ideas can feel intimidating and risky but I truly believe that a new level of flexibility is imperative to the ongoing success of both a salon business and the industry as a whole.

CLIVE’S client
CONFIDENTIAL Your column is your business
Much of the business advice given by industry experts is aimed at salon owners, but it’s important that every stylist in a salon takes control of their own column and sees this as a business within a business. Just like a salon owner, stylists need to have objectives and financial targets to spur them on to be the best and busiest they can be. Clive Collins, one of the founding directors of HOB Salons, offers some top tips on building a successful column.
APPEARANCES DO COUNT Within the first seven seconds of meeting, people will have an impression of who you are and some research suggests a tenth of a second is all it takes for them to determine traits like trustworthiness. Needless to say, pay particular attention to your hair and always dress to impress. You are working in a fashion, trend-led industry so you need to dress accordingly. Remember, you are an ambassador for yourself and the salon.
BE PROFESSIONAL
As a hairdresser, you are a skilled professional and your conduct should reflect this. From the moment your client enters the salon, you should behave professionally and with good manners. This doesn’t mean being stuffy, but just remember this is a client who is paying you for a professional service. Look after every client, give them the best possible service throughout their visit – from the refreshments you serve to the conversation you have. Treat them as a valued guest that you want to return again and again.
DON’T NEGLECT THE CONSULTATION The consultation is the most important part of any client visit; it is your chance to get to know your client, their hair goals and aspirations and start working towards helping them achieve these. However well you think you know a client, carry out a consultation before every appointment. Don’t assume they still want the same as they did on their last visit.
During any consultation, always discuss the three Cs – cut, colour and condition - and don’t be afraid to make recommendations for additional services and take-home products.
BOOK THEM BACK IN Always advise a client to rebook before leaving the salon. Make a suggested time and talk about the next stage towards achieving their ultimate hair goals. Clients will feel like you are on a journey together and rebooking will become second nature for them.
TIPS ONE Don’t be afraid of your column - as a stylist, your column is your business.
TWO Keep an eye on your column and the work that you are getting booked in. If you never do short hair, try adding in some clients who want something shorter. This will attract new clients as well as stretch your skills.
THREE Make sure your working station is clean, fresh and has the right products on it. No one wants to sit in a messy area for their appointment. Your chair and styling station is your responsibility.

THE mindful
HAIRDRESSER In part 1 of his new series, Sam Burnett of HARE & BONE discusses his mindful approach to running a salon. Let’s begin by defining what is means to be mindful. It’s a relatively new addition to our everyday vocabulary and can be interpreted in various ways but primarily being mindful means to be present. It’s about being aware of your emotions and state of mind in that moment. Not what’s gone before or what the future holds but acknowledging what you are feeling right now, without judgement.
What makes you happy? We know busy salons pay the bills but there has to be more that just paying bills and surviving. I love our industry and I love being a hairdresser and when I started to analyse what my purpose was I realised I didn’t need to do it all all of the time. Session stylist, educator, mentor, brand ambassador, salon owner, creative director and salon stylist, I love it all but rather than chasing a dream or overly planning for the future I decided to focus on what makes me happy today. The answer; mentoring my team.
Why be mindful in business? Mindfulness involves noticing what is happening without evaluating or analysing the situation, which as a salon owner seems impossible. However, since I have adopted a more mindful approach to business I have noticed that the team too have altered their attitude. Increased communication and creativity, empathy, acceptability and flexibility are just some of the positive changes that I have witnessed within both HARE & BONE salon teams.
Mindfulness has also been proven to increase job satisfaction and reduce work place stress. All of this and it doesn’t cost a penny to integrate into the business.
So what’s the catch? Mindfulness isn’t something that happens overnight. It takes a conscious effort to put into practice, to stop slipping into old habits. Living in the moment is harder that it seems but if you can begin to change your mindset you will quickly see the benefits. Another habit instilled in a lot of business owners is that we are often busy being busy. Introducing a more mindful approach allows you to strip away the noise. Training your mind to be consistently present helps make clearer and faster decisions. By accepting the moment for what it is means that you accept yourself, those people and practices around you. Adopting a more mindful approach to my salon over the last year has had positive impacts on myself, the team and the business. You don’t need to go on a course, invest money or lots of time. Simply by training your mind to focus on the now will positively impact your business. THE master BUILDER Colin McAndrew is the Managing Director of Medusa, one of Scotland’s fastest growing salon groups. Why building an honest environment is important to build team loyalty? Colin’s Four Top Tips Never before has team loyalty been so crucial. The movement of self-employed has highly impacted the shape of our industry but there has been a lot written about that so I’ll not go over old ground. In a time when every human being, not just clients or team members but every single person in the world is feeling anxious as a result of the pandemic it is essential that the space you provide is a safe one. This is the first building block in creating loyalty.
1. 2. 3. 4. SAFE SPACE The role of a salon owner is to take the pressure off the team, to give them security and confidence so they can excel in what they do best – provide our clients with the highest hairdressing experience. I strongly believe in honesty - even when it’s hard to say and hard to take. I’m not scared to say I don’t know something, or ask for help. This has instilled an environment of openness in the business. It allows everyone to be honest, and ask for support.
CONNECTION Focus on listening, really listening. It is essential that as a salon owner you take the time to really listen to what your employees and team are saying. Some might be asking for a reduction in hours, a change in the way they work or even reconsidering their career as a hairdresser. Rather than react, listen. What is really going on behind the scenes? Have they lost confidence? I find that a good ear followed up by a plan of action demonstrates how seriously you are invested in your team. Getting to the route of the problem will always be better than losing a good member of the team.
To read Colin’s article in full click here.
SOCIAL MATTERS It is important to support your teams mental health. This can be a sticking area for some business owners who have never had to consider the mental health of their employees. To them I say – educate yourself. Having open conversations with your team will help them communicate their concerns. At Medusa we are also raising conversations around social issues often not discussed in the workplace such as menopause, fertility and gender matters. By leading strongly your team will respond.
CONNECTION Finally, loyalty occurs when there is a connection. Belonging is crucial to our happiness. It gives us purpose and meaning so make sure your team feel that bond. As I have mentioned, I am always honest with my team. I have an open door policy and work incredibly hard to make sure everyone feels that connection to each other, the salon, the clients and the brand.

STEP INSIDE PALMER FISHER LONDON HUSBAND AND WIFE DUO NIKITA AND JONATHAN FISHER ARE THE OWNERS OF PALMER FISHER IN LONDON. LET THEM SHOW YOU ROUND THEIR DREAM-COME-TRUE SALON. How did you decide on the style of your salon interior? We wanted to create a calm and tranquil space for our clients to escape whilst they enjoy their salon visit. We also wanted to create a super-premium, clean and functional space for both us and our stylists. Where did you find the inspiration for your design? We looked at a lot of design ideas, but we love the clean, airy minimal feel, inspired by the feel in Ibiza and LA. The overall inspiration for the design came from our branding/logo. We chose the colour turquoise as it is calming but also one of our favourite colours and grey as this complemented well and we wanted to keep it neutral. It wasn’t until we chose those colours that we realised
they were actually the colour theme that we had at our wedding, so it has in turn became quite sentimental too. Did you use an interior designer? No, it was all Jonathan! Describe the vibe created by your interior... Clean, bright and premium with a warm, welcoming feel. What do you hope is your clients’ first impression when they walk in? We want all our clients to feel a certain wow factor when they walk in, a real premium feel that adds to their excitement of getting their hair done, but most importantly for us is making sure our clients feel welcomed.

salon profile
Tell us what are the key elements of your salon design? I think the key element is the vibe our salon design creates – we wanted the salon to flow well, both for function and energy, whilst always representing us a brand. We have used the brand colours throughout the salon as well as our trademark neon signs. Do you have any curated pieces or special features/areas in the salon? Definitely the light-up back washes, they are our statement piece. How have you embraced sustainability within the design? We use Scrummi towels which are sustainable, biodegradable and disposable. They save on replacing cotton towels, as well as using less electricity and water. All our lightbulbs are LED, saving on electricity and constant changing of the bulbs, even all of our neon signs in the salon are actually handmade from LED lighting. We also re-used and upcycled as much as we could too, I used a friend’s old flooring that again was going to be thrown away to create our feature wall as you walk into the salon, he was having his floor redone, and the old flooring was exactly what we were looking for, so it worked perfectly. We also rehomed the back wash basins that would have been thrown away. What salon software do you use and what feature of it do you find most useful? We use Salon IQ as our salon software. I would say our favourite features among many would be all the automated services, including text messages and email appointment reminders. You can have emails and text messages sent out straight after a client’s appointment to recommend a friend or to leave a review, it saves so much time and a huge benefit the salon’s growth. Did your product brand/colour house influence your style of interior design? No, not at all. We wanted our salon to be a reflection of us and our ethos, regardless of our product brands.
What salon furniture have you chosen and why? For our salon chairs we used Salon Supplies, I have a great contact there who has always been super helpful and the products are very affordable and great quality. We got our reception desk and climazones from a salon that had closed down in the area we used to live in. It’s gutting to see a salon close down, but we were very glad to have been able to give some of their old fittings a new home. Do you have dress code/uniform for your team? No uniform for our team. Style is such a great form of self-expression and identity, and we want all our stylists to be able to have that in the salon.
