MOT MOMENTUM Looking outside my window, I can see water falling from the sky. I have vague recollections of this phenomenon, as does my grass, which now resembles the fifth day at Lords. I know some readers won’t have experienced the scorching summer as I have down in Cambridgeshire, so my complaints are unlikely to gain much sympathy from those where rain has been a frequent companion over recent weeks. We return from the summer recess ready to go, with MOT season upon us. The next few months will likely see a surge in tests and, consequently, failure repairs. Suppliers, factors, garages, and motorists need to work together to ensure unnecessary ramp time is at a minimum and vehicle throughput is at maximum. However, according to Diana Whetton, of PW Auto Repairs and PMF columnist, having a fully booked diary is not actually that helpful (page 14). She explained: “If every hour is pre-sold, there is nowhere for a failed vehicle to go. We retain some capacity for emergencies throughout the year, but it is especially important during MOT season. We also plan staff holidays carefully to avoid leaving the workshop understaffed.” She also revealed that a knowledgeable parts advisor adds real value, like recommending fitting kits, bolts, wear leads, or other related components. This ensures one vital missing item doesn’t delay or stop the job. Expanding on the important relationship between garage and factor, she shared one particular story: “A strong relationship with a motor factor is vital – and it goes both ways. Parts advisors and delivery drivers can feel like an extension of our team. “Recently, when one of our service advisors mentioned that he had run out of coffee, a local factor sent a small bag with our next parts delivery. It was a simple gesture, but it summed up that relationship perfectly.” In the meantime, industry organisations are advocating for MOT changes (page seven). The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has urged the government to introduce a statutory minimum MOT fee. While it doesn’t want a £95 fee – even though the federation argues inflation would justify it – it does support a minimum fee of the current maximum charge of £54.85. The IAAF believes that introducing a statutory minimum MOT fee, fixed at the existing rate, would remove cost barriers towards introducing PN and NOx testing. While the current price cap would remain unchanged, garages would no longer be able to discount MOTs, which the IAAF claims would restore the income needed to invest in the specialist equipment required for PN and NOx testing. The Independent Garage Association has secured a meeting with the Department for Transport to discuss the fee. Continuing on the MOT thread, as the trade prepares for one of the busiest periods in the service calendar, MEYLE believes the season is an opportunity to highlight automatic transmission maintenance (page 27). Even though the MOT doesn’t check the transmission oil, MEYLE points out that the yearly test often gets car owners thinking about other maintenance needs. This makes it a great opportunity to spread the word about automatic transmission servicing – a sector that is growing but still not being used as much as it could be, according to MEYLE. Finally, the Automechanika Frankfurt preview – or the cleverly titled Frankfurt Focus – is here (page 29). Some of the runners and riders have produced some teasers, giving clues as to what they’ll be shouting about at this year’s event. PMF will be there throughout, so email pmf@hamerville.co.uk if you’d like to meet up for a coffee or something stronger! Have a great September.

IAAF PUTS FORWARD CASE FOR MINIMUM MOT FEE AND PN TESTING The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) is calling on the government to introduce a statutory minimum MOT fee to enable, what it calls, the long-awaited introduction of particulate number (PN) and NOx emissions testing for diesel vehicles – without increasing the maximum price motorists can be charged. The IAAF believes that introducing a statutory minimum MOT fee, fixed at the existing £54.85 maximum charge, would remove cost barriers towards introducing PN and NOx testing. While the current price cap would remain unchanged, garages would no longer be able to discount MOTs, which the IAAF claims, would restore the income needed to invest in the specialist equipment required for PN and NOx testing. IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field, said: “Inflation alone would justify an MOT fee of around £95 today. We are not asking for that. We are asking for a floor at the price that has already been frozen since 2010, so that the garages carrying out these tests properly can afford the equipment they need. This isn’t about increasing costs for motorists; it’s about removing the only reason the government itself has consistently given for delaying implementation.” Furthermore, the IAAF claims that the current MOT emissions regime is “no longer fit for purpose” when it comes to identifying modern diesel emissions tampering. It says existing smoke opacity testing and visual inspections can be bypassed through illegal software-only diesel particulate filter (DPF) deletes or by modifying the filter housing while maintaining its original appearance. The federation says a vehicle with a tampered or failed DPF can emit particulate pollution equivalent to between 10 and 20 compliant vehicles, with PN testing representing the “only reliable method” of detecting these failures during an MOT. Mark continued: “If protecting public health justifies charging motorists to drive into a city, it surely justifies introducing
the test that identifies the highest-polluting vehicles wherever they are driven. It makes little sense to penalise motorists for emissions while failing to introduce the technology capable of detecting those vehicles during the annual MOT.” The IAAF continued by arguing that introducing PN testing would significantly reduce the illegal DPF delete market by removing the loopholes that currently allow modified vehicles to pass an MOT. It is also urging the government to commit to NOx testing as a second phase, tackling illegal AdBlue and SCR emulator deletes in line with new European roadworthiness requirements due to be introduced between 2027 and 2030. The IAAF has put forward six recommendations to the Department for Transport and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency: 씰 Commit to a firm implementation date for PN testing within the GB MOT. 씰 Adopt the EU PN testing methodology and limit of 250,000 particles/cm³ for post-2013 (Euro 5b) diesel vehicles and newer. 씰 Introduce a statutory minimum MOT fee at the existing £54.85 cap to fund the equipment required, without increasing the maximum price motorists can be charged. 씰 Retain the previously modelled twoyear implementation period to allow garages sufficient time to invest in equipment. 씰 Coordinate implementation with Northern Ireland to ensure a consistent UK-wide testing regime. 씰 Commit to introducing NOx measurement as a second phase alongside PN testing.
The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has confirmed it has secured a meeting with the DfT to discuss the MOT fee. The meeting follows, what the IGA describes, as sustained industry pressure over rising operating costs and concerns about the long-term sustainability of the UK’s MOT testing network. IGA Chief Executive, Stuart James, said: “We welcome the opportunity to meet with government officials to discuss this vitally important issue for the independent garage sector. The MOT fee has been overlooked for far too long now, which undermines the financial viability of the MOT test.” The IGA believes a “fair and realistic” increase in the MOT fee would help protect the long-term resilience of the MOT testing network, enabling independent garages to continue investing in their businesses, staff, and equipment while maintaining high standards of vehicle safety inspection. The IGA says it looks forward to its forthcoming meeting with the DfT, and remains committed to working constructively with government and industry stakeholders to support a sustainable future for MOT testing while continuing to prioritise road safety.

GSF PLEDGES SUPPORT TO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT WITH PURPOSE COALITION COLLABORATION GSF Car Parts has partnered with e Purpose Coalition – which aims to improve social mobility – to boost technical skills, workforce development, and opportunities across the automotive aermarket. e government has revealed a new blueprint for technical education, employerled pathways, and better alignment between training and labour market demand. Under the new plans, Year 10 students will be given the opportunity to combine core academic subjects with technical education. It is hoped this will generate work experience, create partnerships with local employers, and, ultimately, boost youth employment and long-term career prospects. e Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) forecasts a shortfall of more than 30,000 EV-
qualified technicians by 2032, alongside widening gaps in diagnostics, ADAS calibration, and digital vehicle systems. Meanwhile, youth employment is at its highest level in over a decade, with approximately 743,000 16 to 24-year-olds out of work (16.4%). According to GSF, Driving Opportunity explores how national and regional priorities can be applied across the aermarket, bringing employers, educators, and policymakers together while highlighting the sector’s contribution to social mobility, local economies, and the UK’s future workforce. GSF Chief Executive Officer, Steve Horne, said: “Garages across the UK are looking for technicians, apprentices, and future leaders. rough this partnership, we
can help address some of the industry’s biggest workforce challenges while supporting the future of technical education and skills development.” Over the coming months, the partnership will deliver research, stakeholder engagement, and policy development, culminating in the Driving Opportunity report to help address the skills gap and deliver practical recommendations for employers, educators, and policymakers.
JAYAR CAR PARTS OPENS THREE NEW BRANCHES IN ONE MONTH Warminster, Spalding, and Brackley are the three newest locations for Jayar Car Parts branches. Jayar Warminster welcomes both trade and retail customers, including a retail space for walk-in customers. e Spalding branch marked half a century of Jayar sites – fitting given 2026 marks 50 years of the family business – while the three-floor Brackley branch took the entire network to 73 with the addition of Independent Motor Factors’ sites. Brackley was the most recent branch to open, and its branch manager, Adam Pitcher (pictured with members of the
team), is optimistic that Jayar will be a hit with local garages. He said: “Prior to opening, we approached garages to inform them of our presence and what we’re striving to bring to the town. anks to the experience of our team and listening to garages’ feedback, we made a positive impression and opened many accounts. “We’re confident that word will spread, and those account numbers will grow over the next few months. at said, we have to ensure we provide good availability and quality parts, a fast delivery service,
competitive pricing, and a personal customer experience.” Jayar Car Parts General Manager, Tom Curtis, added: “We are continuing to invest – but invest sensibly. We are focusing on areas where we believe garages require a motor factor presence, and that is a strategy that is proving correct so far, with branches opened earlier in the year showing encouraging signs.”

800 garages across the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and LKQ says the UK launch will build on that success. LKQ reports AUTOFY will focus on reducing the time and complexity involved in managing a garage, helping owners spend less time on day-to-day administration and more time developing their businesses. Members will receive access to LaunchControl, a garage management system. LaunchControl brings workshop bookings, customer and vehicle records, job cards, invoicing, payments, and reporting together in one place. e integration with LKQ Euro Car Parts also allows garages to
order parts directly from a job card without switching between systems. LKQ UK and Ireland Head of Concepts, Louise Davies, said: “AUTOFY already has a strong foundation within LKQ’s European workshop network, and we’ve shaped the concept for the UK around helping developing garages to grow and thrive. “It’s designed to make life much easier for garage owners – by bringing together practical tools and support to make the work around each repair simpler. at means less time dealing with administration and more time helping customers and getting vehicles back on the road.”

Q&A
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY: HOW TOM AND BEN CLARKE ARE CREATING THEIR OWN LEGACIES Tom and Ben Clarke are brothers. They both manage a motor factor. They have different approaches. But they both have the same ambition: Carve out their own legacy.
P
MF visited David Clarke back in March 2025. At the time, there was no hint of any potential sale of Autosupplies Chesterfield, but only a few months later, the announcement was made that he had sold up. While David spends more time by the lake fishing than he used to, he continues to keep his eye in – after all, he still owns Leisureways and Butlers – by supporting sons Tom (left) and Ben (right) in managing their respective branches. PMF ’s visit to Rotherham and Barnsley, however, was a chance to see how the next generation of the family business is honouring their dad’s legacy while carving out a future of their own.
LEARNING THE ROPES Immediately stepping into Leisureways, it appeared little had changed from the last visit – except for the significant stock
expansion downstairs and David’s fishing trophies and industry awards crammed into the boardroom – but Tom admitted that was intentional. Well aware of his father’s shadow, there was “no need to make drastic changes” and “the foundations were already in place”. Tom continued: “The most important thing was getting the basics right – I didn’t want to change much straight away. Once you lose a customer, it’s hard to get them back.” Tom’s branch serves over 120 garages daily and is on course to see a 40% increase on year-on-year sales. Stepping into Butlers Automotive – not on the PMF road tour last time – obviously it was impossible to make a comparison, but Ben did concede that he has introduced his own measures, tightened processes, and added a dedicated sales rep on the road. His branch now serves around 70 garages daily and has seen sales rise 40% year-on-year. Ben said: “If service improves, it is likely to improve outside. Customers get their parts quicker. That’s what matters most.” Both brothers credit their dad for teaching them the value of hard work and letting them make their own mistakes. His advice was simple: learn by doing, and lead by example.
BUILDING BRANCHES FOR TODAY’S MARKET Tom, having managed Butlers Automotive before moving to his current site in Rotherham, quickly realised that local markets can be surprisingly different – despite there only being 14 miles between the two.
I
10 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2026
He said: “In Rotherham, the priority is availability and price competitiveness; whereas, in Barnsley, quality is top of their list.” Tom’s response was to double down on stock and efficiency, reorganising the warehouse to ensure that when a garage calls for parts, it’s ready to go. Ninety-five percent of deliveries are delivered within the hour of order. Today, Leisureways holds around £1.7 million worth of stock, while Butlers has around £1.1 million, with both businesses continuing to increase their stockholding to meet customer requirements. At Leisureways, plans are also being drawn up to extend the building. The branch operates from a five-acre site, providing scope to expand the business and future-proof its operations as the stockholding continues to grow.
RECRUITING AND RETAINING TALENT It is no secret that finding and securing talent is hard; PMF has spoken to and heard from representatives from recruitment specialists, garages, and colleges – all echoing the same message – and that is the same story for Leisureways and Butlers: “It’s the biggest challenge of all,” said Ben. That said, PMF was told during several conversations with members of Leisureways staff that they were happy and enjoyed their role, relationships with colleagues, and management of Tom: “Best job I’ve ever had,” one customer service agent said! That enthusiasm was matched in the warehouse too; speaking to staff that have racked up years of service, they praised Tom’s leadership style. When asked what he looks for in a new member of staff, Tom replied: “As long as
010_PMF_SEP26_Layout 1 20/08/2026 02:33 Page 11
PEOPLE & INDUSTRY
they’re willing to learn and are a good person, we can teach them. Whatever a candidate’s age, they come with their own unique and positive attributes. Most importantly, we want a good attitude and someone that will fit into our culture.” Ben echoed that philosophy, accepting PMF’s suggestion of forging relationships with local colleges and schools to unearth raw talent and potential. He added: “Building a workplace that feels like a family is key to retention. Open communication, quality-of-life improvements, and clear standards create the right environment for everyone.”
Q&A
STAYING AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION Competition is rife; there is no shortage of rivals in their respective areas, but both Tom and Ben – absorbing the mantra that David always followed – are only focusing on themselves: “What else can we do?” asked Tom rhetorically. “Thankfully, we have loyal customers, but we have to ensure we deliver a consistent, all-round quality service to maintain that trust.” By doing that, the result will be sustainable growth – even in a highly competitive environment. Both branches are aiming to double their turnover in the coming years. Furthermore, Leisureways expects to reach around £2 million in stock by the end of the year and Butlers around £1.3 million. While that may be ambitious, the brothers’ belief stems from the solid foundations of the past, the steps taken so far in stamping their authority on their respective branches but also plans for the future. While neither would give too much away, Tom summed up the vision: “One day, I want my branch to be as big as Dad’s
– maybe even a bit bigger! We’ve got the space, the team, and the drive to do it.” From long hours and lessons learned to thriving branches and ambitious growth plans, Tom and Ben Clarke are mastering the ropes – in their own way. While their dad, David, continues to offer guidance when it’s needed, it is very much of a case of go for it!

AUTOMECHANIKA FRANKFURT BECKONS FOR BM CATS BM Cats is set to return to Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 – taking place between 8 and 12 September. The company aims to use the international trade fair as a platform to “further strengthen relationships” with partners across Europe, while showcasing its product portfolio. Visitors can find BM Cats in Hall 3, Stand E30, where a brand-new exhibition stand will be on display. The “fresh, modern-looking stand” is equipped with a new layout, flow, and gamification that the company says is in keeping with its ambition to set the standard within the aftermarket. The stand, therefore, is seen as the ideal environment to highlight the latest product developments, as well as discuss BM Cats’ continued commitment to supporting the European aftermarket. A major focus for BM Cats throughout the five-day exhibition will be DPFs within the European aftermarket. Since the introduction of particulate number (PN) emissions testing requirements across the continent, the company says the demand for DPF replacement units has continued to increase, as vehicle owners seek to maintain compliance with increasingly stringent regulations. Mark said: “Automechanika Frankfurt remains one of the most important events in the aftermarket calendar, providing us with a fantastic opportunity to meet with partners from across Europe. “As we move to continue expansion with the region, we’re looking forward to strengthening existing relationships and developing new partnerships that support our long-term commitment to the European market.” For more information about BM Catalysts, www.rdr.link/FBE003

LEISUREWAYS OF ROTHERHAM

OT season brings additional pressure on garages, with failed vehicles needing to be repaired and returned to drivers quickly. This creates a familiar surge in demand for replacement parts, particularly those associated with common MOT failures, and puts the efficiency of the supply chain under the spotlight. For motor factors, meeting this demand isn’t necessarily about making significant changes to stock levels, but about staying prepared all year round. Significant changes aren’t required to stockholding for MOT season. With minimum and maximum stock levels maintained throughout the year, a factor can consistently support garages when MOT failures come through the door. At Leisureways, we focus on maximum stock levels throughout the year, rather than making significant seasonal changes. Stock levels are continually reviewed, with particularly slow-moving products identified and, where appropriate, returned to suppliers. This helps ensure stockholding capacity remains focused on products garages are likely to need. Keeping on top of new-to-range products is also important. By continually reviewing and adding new references, factors can supply parts for newer vehicles, including applications that may not yet be as widely covered elsewhere in the market. Having the right products available is important, but once a vehicle has failed its MOT, speed is also critical. Responding quickly to orders and making sure parts can be picked and delivered without unnecessary delays helps garages minimise vehicle downtime and avoid tying up garage space. With garages managing multiple vehicles and customers expecting repairs to be completed quickly, the motor factor’s role is to make sourcing the required parts as straightforward and reliable as possible. However, keeping the process moving depends on more than the factor alone. When a garage is waiting for a vehicle to be repaired, delays further up the supply chain can have a knock-on effect on the factor, garage, and the motorist. Suppliers and delivery partners play a vital role in ensuring parts reach the factor when expected. One of the biggest challenges we face is suppliers not dispatching orders on time, as well as couriers failing to deliver parcels on the next-day services agreed with suppliers. Ultimately, the best preparation for MOT season is being ready before it arrives.

DIANA WHETTON PW AUTO REPAIRS
F
or us, September and October are peak months for MOT demand. Every day already feels busy, and unfortunately autumn does not magically bring extra hours. It is not simply about fitting tests into the diary – but the repair demand that follows – inspection processes, parts identification, estimate creation, customer authorisation, delivery, fitting and retest – often within the same day. Customer expectations for an instant fix are increasingly high. The COVID pandemic changed the pattern drastically. Although it is gradually evolving, we still feel the peak at this time of year. We use a real-time data platform and benchmarking service to give us an early warning of the wider independent workshop cycle. We compare this with our own reports, historical workshop trends and the MOT reminders recorded for existing customers over the following 12 months. Although the reminder dates are maintained manually, we use them as an indicator rather than a guaranteed booking forecast. Our data supports the wider pattern of demand building through late summer, peaking in September and October, and remaining strong into the final months of the year. It seems counterintuitive, but a completely full diary is not helpful. If every hour is pre-sold, there is nowhere for a failed vehicle to go. We retain some capacity for emergencies throughout the year, but it is especially important during MOT season. We also plan staff holidays carefully to avoid leaving the workshop understaffed. We use an online portal to help ensure the part we identify matches what our supplier is looking at. A wrong part can block a ramp and turn a same-day repair into an overnight delay. A knowledgeable parts advisor adds real value by recommending fitting kits, bolts, wear leads, and related components, preventing one vital missing item from stopping the job. Honest stock information and realistic delivery times are equally important. If there are different fitment options or a delay, we need to know early enough to adjust the plan and manage the customer’s expectations. A strong relationship with a motor factor is vital – and it goes both ways. Parts advisors and delivery drivers can feel like an extension of our team. Recently, when one of our service advisors mentioned that he had run out of coffee, a local factor sent a small bag with our next parts delivery. It was a simple gesture, but it summed up that relationship perfectly. MOT season exposes every weak point in the chain. With shared data, early conversations, and dependable delivery, busy does not have to become chaotic.

WINDSCREEN REPAIR
IS OFFERING A WINDSCREEN REPAIR SERVICE WORTH CONSIDERING? Evenings are drawing in and mornings are becoming that little bit darker. And now the long, hot days of summer are finally coming to an end. Esprit believes now is the time to start talking to customers about how they can help their customers prepare their cars for autumn and winter.
W
hile tyres and brakes often take priority, Esprit believes the vehicle windscreen is just as important for driver safety, and it’s an area where garages can support customers while creating additional revenue. Victoria Evans of Esprit Windscreen Repair Equipment said: “One of the best things that garages can do before winter is check for chips or cracks. Poorer driving conditions and potholes make these very common, and if left, a small chip can quickly spread into a large crack. This often means a costly replacement. “Carrying out a simple repair now saves customers money and prevents future issues. If your garages aren’t already carrying out windscreen repair, this is a great time to talk to them about adding repair as a service.” Fresh chips are always easier to repair, with less dirt or debris to remove, as Victoria explained: “A quick repair leaves the windscreen looking and performing as good as new.” Victoria believes that when customers bring their vehicles in for MOT or other repairs, garages should look at their screen. If they’ve got small chips, or even cracks, these could be repaired. The Esprit kit comes with a long curing lamp which allows curing of cracks in one go. Victoria added: “Sometimes technicians worry that repairing cracks is difficult, but with training and a bit of practice, it’s not hard.”
I
16 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2026
If new to windscreen repair or would like refresher training, or training on how to repair cracks, this is available at Esprit’s Staffordshire headquarters or on-site. Esprit also provides free online videos.
CONCLUSION Victoria insists offering windscreen repairs is quick to learn, profitable, and saves drivers’ money while building loyalty. As the weather turns, driving is likely to become that little bit tougher. By upselling windscreen repair, motor factors can add another important but also potentially lucrative service to their repertoire.
WINDSCREEN TECHNOLOGY “NO BARRIER” TO REPAIRS Victoria says that with an Esprit kit, garages can repair heated screens and windscreens with ADAS technology, helping drivers avoid the inconvenience and cost of replacement. For garages and motor factors, this should bring benefits and opportunities – like adding windscreen repair to servicing.

MOT UPSELLING
TURN MOT FAILURES INTO OPPORTUNITIES AND REVENUE, SAYS JRP DISTRIBUTION JRP Distribution is confident MOT season will generate plenty of upsell opportunities that will also offer value to the end-user.
T
he company says there are many products that can be offered to customers if they fail an MOT. Citing research by Halfords, lights are the leading cause of MOT failure with poor emissions and chips in the windscreen also common reasons. JRP Distribution is confident many of these failures can be resolved there and
then in the workshop, like those identified, and the company is urging workshops to take it upon themselves to fix the problems. JRP’s Ollie Page said: “The MOT season can be a stressful time for a driver, as a lot can happen to a car in a year! Yet, workshops can also make the most of this time by having solutions to common MOT failures in stock and even calling customers
before their MOT to see if there’s any work that needs doing beforehand. “Many MOT failures are small fixes; checks to the windscreen, tyres, wiper blades and headlights can be done swiftly, and even resolved quickly with the right equipment on hand. This can lead to a lucrative revenue stream and also ease customers’ minds in the lead-up to their MOT.”
LIGHTS Common issues include blown bulbs, cloudy headlight covers, and faulty brake lights. JRP says many of these issues have a simple solution, whether that’s restoring the headlamp unit to its former glory or replacing a bulb. Simply

MOT UPSELLING
WINDSCREEN It’s not only cracks or chips in the windscreen that can cause failures – but also wiper blades! Wiper blades that do not effectively clear the windscreen will result in a fail. Simply Brands has a competitively priced range consisting of both multi-fit flat blades and traditional conventional blades, which will cover the vast majority of the car parc. The multi-fit flat blade offering will cover 98% of the car parc and consists of 15 SKUs with eight OE fit adaptors that cover the 10 most popular OE arm types. This will include a retro fit hook adaptor to upgrade older vehicles to the latest flat blade technology. The conventional blade range has 11 SKUs in lengths 280mm to 780mm, and all are a metal vented frame design with a universal pre-attached adaptor to fit all
hook wiper arms, as well as legacy side pin and 7mm bayonet wiper arms. Alternatively, the recently launched brand, SBxPRO, has a wiper blade range that comes as twin packs and consists of 110 SKUs that are direct OE replacements, covering more than 95% of the beam and hybrid car parc. Ultimately, a cracked or chipped windscreen impacts a driver’s visibility, and, therefore, is another reason for failing an MOT; however, this could be remedied with a windscreen repair kit, rather than replacing the windscreen. The QUIXX kit includes all the special tools required and an effective, transparent resin, enabling users to repair damage to the windscreen. Simply Brands also has an option using a patented syringe and resin procedure.
EMISSIONS An MOT failure that continues to plague drivers is the emissions test. EcoMotive’s Clean Drive DPF Regen (ECR1000) is formulated to regenerate the DPF by removing the soot build-up, thus increasing the airflow through the DPF and reducing emissions. For more information about JRP Distribution,
As the product works across all diesel vehicle types, JRP says it’s a helpful and convenient product to have on the shelf, as it also assists with DPF blockages, EGR valve issues, cleans NOx sensors, and lubricates the entire DPF system.

FILTRATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILITY MOVES INTO THE FILTRATION AFTERMARKET, SAYS MANN+HUMMEL Sustainability in the automotive aftermarket is no longer limited to EVs, tyres or waste oil disposal. It is increasingly influencing the everyday parts fitted during routine servicing – that includes filters, as Product and Marketing Manager – Aftermarket, Gary Winslow, explains.
F
iltration may not always be the first category associated with environmental progress. Yet filters are replaced in high volumes across the UK car parc, and they sit at the centre of vehicle reliability, cabin comfort and engine protection. That makes the category an important area for incremental but meaningful sustainability gains.
SUSTAINABILITY SHIFT ACROSS FULL PRODUCT JOURNEY Manufacturers are looking at how filter media is produced, what raw materials are used, how much energy is consumed in production, how components are packaged and how efficiently products move through the supply chain. At the same time, the aftermarket has to balance environmental improvement with the realities of vehicle servicing: parts must remain available, affordable, easy to identify and fit-for-purpose. This is a critical point. A more sustainable filter will only gain traction if it delivers the same performance, durability and fitment confidence as the product it replaces. Workshops cannot risk customer dissatisfaction, repeat repairs or uncertainty over whether a part meets the required standard. For vehicle owners, sustainability is welcome, but not if it appears to compromise engine protection, air quality or service value.
MATERIAL INNOVATION AN IMPORTANT AREA OF DEVELOPMENT
WIDER OPPORTUNITY: MAKE SUSTAINABILITY TANGIBLE
Traditional filter media often uses fossilbased resins to provide strength, stability and resistance to heat, oil or moisture – but at MANN-FILTER, we are now exploring alternatives that reduce reliance on fossilderived inputs, while maintaining the technical characteristics required in automotive filtration. One example is the use of lignin-based impregnation in selected filter media. Lignin is a natural polymer found in wood and is available as a by-product from the paper and pulp industry. In filtration applications, it can partially replace conventional resin systems used to stabilise cellulose-based media. This type of technology has been introduced into selected air and oil filter ranges, positioning it as a way to improve the sustainability profile of established service parts without changing workshop processes.
Rather than broad claims, workshops need credible examples, like reduced fossilbased raw material content, lower-impact manufacturing, recyclable packaging, longer service life where technically appropriate, and dependable performance aligned with OE expectations. For vehicle owners, the message is just as straightforward: choosing a more sustainable filter does not have to mean changing driving habits or paying for unfamiliar technology. It can simply mean selecting a quality replacement part that has been designed with lower environmental impact in mind.
SUSTAINABILITY NEEDS TO BE EASY TO ADOPT If a filter can be ordered under the same part number, fitted in the same way, and supported by the same quality expectations, it becomes a practical improvement rather than an operational burden. Clear packaging identification and straightforward customer messaging can also help workshops explain the benefit without overcomplicating the service conversation.
CONCLUSION With the UK car parc set to include millions of petrol and diesel vehicles for many years to come, sustainable improvements in conventional service parts should not be overlooked. Filtration may be a mature category, but it is evolving. For the aftermarket, the next step is to combine proven protection with more responsible materials, manufacturing, and supply practices – and to make that change easy to deliver. CHINESE CAR IMPACT
VALEO UNLOCKING ASIAN VEHICLE REPAIR POTENTIAL Valeo Service UK says it is helping the trade capitalise on the growth of Asian vehicle brands across the UK aftermarket, providing both factors and workshops with an extensive OE quality transmission range, stock availability, and technical support.
A
ccording to recent year-to-date data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Chinese carmakers are accelerating their UK market share at a record-breaking pace. Valeo says that as these modern passenger cars enter the critical three to five-year-old aftermarket “sweet spot”, independent workshops risk missing out on valuable revenue due to concerns over part availability or technical complexity. Valeo Service UK Division General Manager, Andy Swann, said: “Asian
manufacturers have reshaped the UK car parc, creating a significant commercial opportunity for independent garages. However, a garage can only capture that revenue if it has two things: immediate access to high-quality parts and the technical confidence to fit them. “At Valeo, we don’t just supply OEquality transmission components that match factory performance. We provide free technical support through Tech Assist and direct access to our UK technical hotline, helping
independent workshops take on more Asian vehicle repairs without delays or unnecessary downtime.”
IMPORTANCE OF RECEIVING PARTS QUICKLY Valeo says a key challenge for workshops servicing newer Asian applications is securing replacement transmission components quickly – pointing to possible main dealer backorders, which can leave vehicles occupying valuable ramp space, affecting productivity and profitability.
WHAT’S IN VALEO’S RANGE? Covering up to 90 percent of the Asian vehicle parc, Valeo’s offering includes more than 1,900 part numbers, supporting popular applications, such as the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, MG HS, Toyota RAV4 and Corolla, and Suzuki Swift. The range includes conventional clutch kits, hydraulicbearing kits, DMFs, FullPACK DMFs, dual dry and dual wet clutch systems, torque converters, clutch-by-wire systems and actuators, supporting the latest Asian powertrain technologies.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IMPACT
As the trade prepares for one of the busiest periods in the service calendar, MEYLE is confident MOT season is an opportunity to highlight the importance of automatic transmission maintenance.
MEYLE: CAPITALISE ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING OPPORTUNITY
A
ccording to data from the global market research company, GiPA, and the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation’s industry intelligence report, MOT testing volumes in the UK are expected to increase. The report expects that in August, the estimated test volume would be 2.48 million, which would be 2.5 percent higher than 12 months earlier. MEYLE acknowledges that while the MOT itself does not specifically assess transmission oil condition, the company says the annual test often prompts vehicle owners to address wider maintenance requirements. This makes it an ideal time for workshops to raise awareness of automatic transmission servicing – a growing but still underutilised area for workshops, according to MEYLE.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS: WIDESPREAD BUT OFTEN OVERLOOKED Automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly common across the UK vehicle
parc, yet regular transmission oil changes are still frequently overlooked, says MEYLE. Despite the ‘lifetime fill’ misconception, as MEYLE describes it, transmission oil degrades over time as a result of heat, friction, and contamination from wear particles. Left unchanged, this can lead to reduced lubrication performance, harsher gear changes, increased wear, and, in some cases, costly transmission damage.
UNTAPPED REVENUE POTENTIAL MEYLE’s recent survey of independent workshops, conducted with market research institute Innofact, underlined the scale of the opportunity. While 73 percent of UK workshops recognise the need for automatic transmission maintenance, only 40 percent say they carry out the service regularly. The company says the findings point to a “significant gap” between awareness and execution, suggesting many workshops are still missing out on a valuable source of revenue. The survey also highlighted the barriers holding workshops back, with respondents
citing a lack of technical information, insufficient training, and difficulties sourcing parts as key reasons why automatic transmission servicing is not carried out more consistently. MEYLE Head of Technical Training, Patrick Stüdemann, said: “Automatic transmission servicing remains a key untapped opportunity for independent workshops. MOT season brings customers in and creates the ideal moment to discuss preventative maintenance. By raising awareness of transmission oil changes, technicians can help motorists avoid costly repairs while strengthening their service offering.”
WHAT DOES MEYLE OFFER? To support workshops in delivering these services, MEYLE offers a range of automatic transmission oil change kits, with the aim of simplifying the repair process and making servicing more efficient. The kits contain the components required for the oil change. MEYLE says it is also investing in training and technical support to help the trade build confidence in this area. Through dedicated
training initiatives and practical guidance, the company is working to remove some of the barriers identified in its research and help aftermarket stakeholders turn automatic transmission servicing into a routine part of their maintenance offer. For more information about MEYLE, www.rdr.link/FBE014

EXHAUSTS & EMISSIONS
EXHAUST DIAGNOSTICS: THE IMPACT OF BACK PRESSURE European Exhaust and Catalyst Technical Trainer, Stuart Still, reveals what exhaust back pressure is all about and why it matters in today’s aftermarket. emissions compliance, and component reliability. When exhaust flow is restricted or incorrect, it can affect engine performance and drivability, fuel economy, CAT and DPF lifespan, lambda sensor operation, and exhaust valve and EGR system protection. Understanding these issues will help when advising customers on the correct replacement part and identifying possible causes of premature failure.
M
odern exhaust systems are no longer simple replacement parts. From Euro I through to Euro VI emissions legislation, exhaust components have become highly engineered systems designed to work alongside complex engine management technology; therefore, understanding common exhaust issues is essential. Furthermore, providing customers with the correct component – along with accurate technical guidance – helps prevent repeat failures, reduces unnecessary returns, and builds trust with workshops.
WHAT IS EXHAUST BACK PRESSURE? Correct exhaust back pressure is important for maintaining vehicle performance,
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW BACK PRESSURE? High exhaust back pressure is a restrictive bottleneck that forces the engine to expend energy expelling spent gases, thereby reducing horsepower and increasing heat. Conversely, low back pressure allows exhaust to flow freely and rapidly, maximising power output.
HIGH BACK PRESSURE: A SIGN OF RESTRICTION High back pressure is often caused by blocked CATs, overloaded or failed DPFs, collapsed internal pipework, or restricted exhaust flow. Common symptoms include loss of engine power, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, or warning lights and fault codes.
If the restriction is not addressed, excessive pressure can place additional strain on other engine and emissions components. When supplying replacement CATs or DPFs, EEC says it is important that the customer checks the vehicle’s condition and diagnoses the reason for failure before fitting new components.
LOW BACK PRESSURE – WHAT’S ESCAPING? Low back pressure is commonly caused by corrosion holes or exhaust leaks, damaged gaskets or seals, or internal silencer deterioration. When exhaust gases escape before reaching the end of the system, it can affect exhaust flow, emissions readings, and engine management performance. In some cases, this can contribute to the CAT overheating and its premature failure. A common issue within the aftermarket is replacing a failed CAT without identifying the original cause. This can result in repeat failures, unnecessary warranty claims, and unhappy customers. At EEC, we encourage technicians to inspect the complete exhaust system before replacing emissions components. Identifying leaks, damage, or underlying faults helps ensure the correct repair. For more information about EEC, www.rdr.link/FBE025
EEC’S TOP TIPS Ask the right questions. Understand the vehicle application, symptoms, and reason for replacement. Encourage correct diagnosis. Replacement CATs and DPFs should only be fitted once the cause of failure has been identified. Check the complete exhaust system. Leaks, damaged flexi
sections, and mounting issues can contribute to premature failure. Supply quality components. Reliable parts reduce warranty issues and improve customer confidence. Use technical support when needed. Our experienced team is available to assist customers with product and application queries.

Kalimex Managing Director, Mike Schlup, is keen to spread the word about in-house DPF cleaning – a task that has a “silver lining” for the trade and end-users.
KALIMEX: KEEP THE DPF ON THE VEHICLE
G
iven an active DPF warning light now constitutes an automatic MOT failure, motorists can no longer ignore it. This usually results in a hastily arranged visit to their mechanic. It’s frustrating if the warning has come on – just before the MOT, giving them little time to find a remedy. It is, however, a cloud with a big silver lining for motor factors, mechanics and their customers. In days of old, mechanics had no choice other than to remove a DPF from the vehicle and either clean it using expensive kit or send it away to a workshop specialising in DPF cleaning. A process that could take anything from several hours to days. With DPF cleaning products and professional toolkits available, like those by JLM Lubricants, the task of cleaning a DPF can now be reduced to minutes, or if it’s badly blocked but recoverable, to a few hours. This all without removing the DPF.

Happy days! The workshop keeps the DPF business in-house resulting in high margins, significant time savings and lower bills for customers.
KEEP THE DPF ON THE VEHICLE For some workshops, the days of removing the DPF are not yet behind them, which is why the team at Kalimex is on a mission to spread the word – it no longer has to be this way. It’s a process that can take a few days at high financial and time cost to the motorist, with inconvenience for the workshop that’s usually making a small margin on the job.
DPF SOLUTIONS FROM JLM LUBRICANTS At Kalimex, we supply JLM professionalgrade, chemical solutions. We are confident these will help workshops clear DPF issues quickly, so a customer’s car can pass its MOT or they’re simply grateful to be back on the road. Workshops can now make a considerable profit from offering inhouse DPF cleaning too, with their

professional motor factor benefiting from the steady stream of repeat sales. The JLM ReGen Plus and DPF Cleaner additives are in-tank treatments with powerful concentrations of precious metal catalysts (platinum and cerium), which help
to promote low-temperature regens in the DPF, clearing blocked soot and the dreaded dashboard warning light. For direct DPF cleaning, JLM offers a rapid aerosol DPF Cleaning Spray – suitable for both diesel and gasoline particulate
filters – which uses a foaming action to break down trapped soot inside the filter. This is a popular seller for motor factors. For badly blocked DPFs, the professional tool kit with the two-stage DPF cleaning system tackles even the worst blockages.
Alan Landale, founder of multi-award-winning AJ Fleetcare and the AJ Fleetcare DPF Fundamentals training programme, is a long-standing user of JLM DPF cleaning products. He said: “Turning our customers’ vehicles around quickly to get them back on the road is crucial not just for them but for us. That’s why we need repair products we can trust to do a good job every time. We only ever use JLM DPF Cleaning products. They’ve served us extremely well for seven years, helping to establish ourselves as the go-to DPF specialists in our area.”
Many motor factors now stock and recommend JLM Lubricants products, including the DPF range. CR Marks Banbury Manager, Matthew Perring, reported: “As the manager of an independent motor factor, I’m responsible for ensuring I stock products that sell and do what they say. I want my customers to keep coming back to us. With JLM, I’ve found such a brand. The feedback was incredible to the point that my customers,
mainly garages, started to order these products in multiples because they deliver on their promises.” For more information about Kalimex, www.rdr.link/FBE016 For more information about JLM Lubricants, www.rdr.link/FBE017

BRAKES & CLUTCHES
COMLINE UNVEILS BRAKE PAD RANGE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Comline has announced the launch of EVLine, a dedicated range of brake pads engineered specifically for EVs. The British aftermarket brand says this new line can meet the demands of the growing EV market in the UK.
I
n April 2026, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced the registration of the two millionth battery electric vehicle (BEV). This marked approximately 5% of the UK car parc. A month later, the SMMT revealed BEVs had captured a record monthly market share of new vehicles at 27.3%, highlighting the accelerating adoption of EVs.
INTRODUCING EVLINE… Comline says its Business Line team has been consistently expanding its product offerings to include EV and hybrid references, analysing VIO data to do so. With over 3,700 part numbers currently available and new additions added monthly, EVLine is a direct response to the growing number of EVs. The company says EVLine brake pads are R90-approved and engineered so they are quiet when in use and offer consistent
stopping power. This is further helped by an additional scorching process after curing, which stabilises the friction characteristics at higher temperatures. Comline’s blue livery appears on the CEM115 friction material too.
WHY IS EVLINE NEEDED? Although regenerative braking handles the majority of deceleration in EVs, the brake pedal remains an essential part of driving. Brakes are still required for emergency stops, driving in extreme weather, and when regenerative braking is limited, such as when the battery is at a high state of charge. However, because friction brakes are used less frequently, Comline says brake pads and discs can be exposed to rust, debris, and corrosion during prolonged periods of inactivity, increasing the likelihood that they will eventually require replacement.
HOW MANY PART NUMBERS ARE IN STOCK? Currently, 69 Comline EVLine references are in stock, with more in development. Recent additions include part numbers for the Fiat Ducato (2020-2023), Ford Tourneo Custom (2024-onwards), and Transit Custom (2024-onwards), Maxus Edeliver (2020-onwards), and Mazda MX30 (2020-onwards). Comline Director, Dr Keith Ellis – known affectionately as Dr Friction – said: “As the EV market continues to expand, the need for specialised products, like EVLine, becomes increasingly important. “Our new brake pads are designed to support safe, reliable braking and help independent workshops meet the evolving needs of their customers.”

BRAKES & CLUTCHES
FIRST LINE OFFERS BRAKING MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL BRIEF First Line Product Director, Kelvin Olds, provides an overview of braking maintenance. To begin his masterclass, he explains why failing to replace brake pads and discs together can lead to uneven wear and reduced braking efficiency.
K
elvin began: “Brake pads naturally wear down over time, but if they are replaced without also installing new discs, the old discs’ worn surface can cause the new pads to wear unevenly. “This uneven contact reduces braking performance, increases stopping distances, and can lead to noise and vibration during braking.” First Line’s product director acknowledges that although it may seem cost-effective to only replace brake pads, this often leads to greater expenses down the line. Uneven wear caused by mismatched components shortens the lifespan of new brake pads and forces premature replacement of the discs. Kelvin believes that by replacing both components at the same time ensures the brake system works at its best, reducing overall maintenance costs and enhancing long-term reliability.
DON’T OVERLOOK ANCILLARY COMPONENTS Brake replacement isn’t just about discs and pads either; supporting components, like brake hoses, hardware, and brake fluid play an important role in braking performance. Kelvin warns that neglecting these ancillary parts during a
I
40 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2026
brake service can create both safety and performance issues. He says that brake hoses, for instance – which carry hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder to the brake calipers – can degrade over time. Cracks or brittleness can lead to fluid leaks, while swelling under pressure can reduce braking efficiency and create a spongy brake pedal. In extreme cases, deteriorated brake hoses can burst, resulting in a sudden loss of braking power. Brake hardware, Kelvin says – including springs, clips and pins – ensures accurate alignment and function of the brake pads and shoes. Kelvin added: “If worn or damaged hardware isn’t replaced during a brake service, it can lead to noise, uneven wear, and poor braking performance. Loose or misaligned pads will reduce stopping efficiency and increase the frequency of pad replacement.” Brake fluid is another critical factor often overlooked during brake maintenance, reports Kelvin. He says that over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and can lead to brake fade under heavy use. Contaminated fluid can also cause corrosion in brake lines and calipers, leading to leaks and diminished braking efficiency.
“Regular brake fluid flushes, ideally every two years, are essential to maintain reliable braking performance and extend the life of the entire system,” Kelvin said.
THE RISKS OF LOW-QUALITY BRAKE COMPONENTS Using substandard brake components is one of the most common causes of poor braking performance and increased maintenance costs, Kelvin insists, with low-quality brake pads and discs likely to wear out more quickly, resulting in shorter replacement cycles and higher overall costs. Kelvin concluded: “Cheap brake components may save money initially, but they often lead to uneven wear, increased noise, and reduced stopping efficiency. Inconsistent friction can cause vibrations and longer stopping distances, which poses a safety risk, especially in emergency situations.” Sub-par components can also cause further damage to the braking system. Poor-quality pads and discs may lead to premature wear of calipers and rotors, resulting in costly repairs and vehicle downtime. For more information about First Line, www.rdr.link/FBE019

What's New? SCHAEFFLER VITESCO EXPANDS After launching the Schaeffler Vitesco brand with a range of NOx sensors last year, the company has expanded the portfolio. Sensors, actuators, purge valves, reductant dosing units, high-pressure pumps, transmission control units (TCUs), plus diesel and petrol injectors, are all included in the update. Transmissions, like DSG and PowerShift, use a TCU to control gear shifting accurately. Mass air flow (MAF) sensors calculate the optimal air-fuel ratio for efficient combustion, while NOx sensors set standards for accurate nitrogen oxide measurement, supporting efficient exhaust aftertreatment and global environmental compliance. Temperature sensors provide precise data for efficient fuel consumption, reliable emissions management, and a long engine life, while pressure sensors detect potential issues, like leaks in the intake or fuel evaporation systems, acting as early warning systems. The Schaeffler Vitesco actuator range includes electronic throttle control (ETC) and air control valve (ACV) for diesel engines. ETC regulates airflow to control engine load and speed, while ACV manages fresh air intake, optimises exhaust gas recirculation, and prevents ‘shut-off shaking’. Schaeffler says Vitesco products are all manufactured to genuine OE quality standards. WWW.RDR.LINK/FBE022
MORE THAN 150 NEW HENGST FILTER REFERENCES HELLA has introduced 184 new Hengst filter references. The latest update includes new applications for electric and hybrid vehicles, plus HELLA’s premium activated carbon and Blue.care+ filters. Hengst filters are now available for the likes of the BYD Dolphin EV, ATTO 3 EV, SEAL EV, HAN EV, and TANG, alongside hybrid models, such as the Honda Civic XI 2.0 e:HEV and ZR-V e:HEV. Designed to deliver fit-first-time performance, HELLA says the expanded programme is manufactured to OE standards, helping reduce the risk of repeat repairs and supporting efficient workshop operation. HELLA says vehicle occupants can be exposed to up to five times more airborne pollution than pedestrians, making effective cabin filtration an important consideration for passenger comfort and interior air quality. The new range includes 10 activated carbon cabin filters together with five premium Blue.care+ filters. The latter features a threelayer construction combining a bio-functional and antiviral layer, an activated carbon layer, and an ultrafine filter layer. HELLA reports this design helps filter nitrogen oxides, viruses, and allergens, while reducing fine dust entering the passenger compartment and providing resistance to mould, bacteria, and viruses. WWW.RDR.LINK/FBE023
VALEO SERVICE UK Valeo Service UK has launched its new NOx sensor range, introducing 71 new references to the market and providing coverage for more than 40 million passenger cars. By matching European fleet composition across a wide range of makes and models, Valeo says the new range helps reduce catalogue gaps and should give the trade “greater confidence” when sourcing replacement components for complex exhaust systems. NOx sensors play a critical role within SCR systems, measuring nitrogen oxide levels and helping ensure the system can convert harmful emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. The new references complement Valeo’s existing sensor portfolio, which now includes more than 2,000 sensors. WWW.RDR.LINK/FBE024
