GOOD OL’ FRANKFURT Automechanika Frankfurt is behind us, but the stories continue to hit my inbox – celebrations of product launches, details of innovations, and analysis of trending conversations between exhibitors and visitors. With over 112,000 visitors from 173 countries walking through the doors, truly, it was an international show. In this issue, I bring you a first-hand report from the German city – the country’s major financial and transportation hub – where I was invited to several press conferences, briefings, and encounters. As always, there was plenty of emphasis on the future – but there were plenty of insights and takeaways that will apply now. I always enjoy my trip to Frankfurt – the buzz, the culture, and the people – and this year was no different, even if a couple of dramas threatened to at the beginning. You can read my take on it (page 26), and I hope you can take something useful from it. Closer to home, it’s been another busy month in the trade; GSF has opened a new regional distribution centre – its largest branch to date – AAG has acquired the e-commerce platform, MicksGarage.com, and Jayar Car Parts has completed its Poole branch relocation. New appointments continue to be made too; professionals either earning promotions or securing a new role elsewhere. The wheels of industry continue to turn. On that subject, the automotive charity, Ben, recently announced a new chair and four trustees. Jonathan Hewett has been appointed to the top job, while Darren Edwards, Georgina Hoare, Damian Oton, and Pia Wilkes CBE, have all been named trustees. With the Ben Ball – the annual festive extravaganza – only a few months away, and me wanting to know how the charity is maximising its impact on the trade, I interviewed its CEO, Rachel Clift (page 14). When asked about how the structure of a chairperson, trustees, and her job of CEO works, Rachel responded: “The chair is my direct point of accountability and leads the board of trustees, who operate in a voluntary, governance-focused capacity. I act as the conduit between the board and the executive team, ensuring strategic plans are developed, approved, and implemented effectively.” Ben’s mission is to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Whether supporting someone in a crisis, providing care, or working with industry partners to improve the health and wellbeing of the workforce, the philosophy is the same. The charity also provides guidance and resources to help workers manage physical ailments and maintain general wellness. Financial support is also available. On whether this strategy is working and how it is measured, Rachel said: “We measure our impact, not solely by volume or the number of people we support, but by the outcomes we achieve and the difference we make to people’s lives. We also focus on the systemic change we aim to bring to the industry around health and wellbeing.” Ben says it is here to support the lifeblood of the automotive industry – its people – providing support to anyone who works or has worked in the automotive industry. AAG ACQUIRES MICKSGARAGE.COM GSF OPENS LARGEST BRANCH TO DATE GSF Car Parts has opened a new regional distribution centre in Bromford – making it the national motor factor’s largest branch, with over one million parts stocked. The Birmingham team now operates from an 11,360sqft facility, located at Unit 1, Bromford Central, Bromford Lane. GSF says the site is now its biggest stockholder outside its national distribution centre. Previously based at Fort Industrial Park in Castle Vale, the new RDC serves branches across Birmingham and the wider Midlands, providing the capacity needed to “support future network growth”.
GSF continues to increase its network, with the RDC move in addition to openings in Coventry, Leamington Spa, Leicester, Derby and Burton upon Trent. GSF Birmingham – Bromford Branch Manager, Kieran Fitzpatrick, said: “Birmingham is one of the longest-standing locations in the GSF network, and this move marks an exciting new chapter for the team. By supporting 12 branches across the Midlands from a larger, more modern facility, we’re enhancing the service, availability and delivery performance we can offer our customers.”
JAYAR CAR PARTS FINALISES POOLE BRANCH MOVE Jayar Car Parts has announced that its Poole branch has completed its relocation. Located on Fleetsbridge Business Centre – less than a mile from the previous site on Albany Park – the new site is double the size of the old building. As a result, Jayar says it has been able to increase the amount of stock available, and because of its modernisation, staff will be able to pick “quicker and more efficiently”. Jayar Car Parts General Manager, Tom Curtis, said: “Poole is an incredibly popular branch, and it became clear that we needed to upsize to ensure we continue to meet the demand of garages in the area. “The new site provides us with exactly what we need – size, location, and accessibility – so I am confident this move will see Jayar Poole go from strength to strength.” Jayar Poole is managed by Darren Francis, who is in charge of a team of 20.
Alliance Automotive Group UK and Ireland has announced the acquisition of Irish e-commerce platform MicksGarage.com, one of Europe’s largest online retailers of car parts and accessories. AAG says the acquisition reinforces its e-commerce capabilities while expanding its presence in the Irish automotive aftermarket. MicksGarage.com is a €15 million turnover e-commerce business employing 52 colleagues. Founded in 2003 by Ciaran and Michael “Mick” Crean in Northwest Mayo, MicksGarage.com has grown from an initial catalogue of 3,000 products to more than 10 million parts and accessories. NAPA Auto Parts Managing Director, Lewis Selby, said: “We are delighted to welcome MicksGarage.com and its colleagues to AAG. Their strong ecommerce platform, customer focus, and established position in Ireland make them a strong addition to the AAG family. “This acquisition strengthens our digital capabilities and supports our ambition to offer customers across the Irish automotive aftermarket even greater choice, convenience, and access to quality parts.” AAG wishes Ciaran and Mick every success as they continue to develop WaveOMS, an order-fulfilment software business.

AUTOTECH TRAINING HIGHLIGHTS MOT MANAGEMENT PRESSURES AFTER MOT AUTHORISATION WITHDRAWAL FIGURES ANNOUNCED New DVSA figures showing more than 400 MOT authorisations withdrawn during the last financial year highlight the importance of giving MOT management sufficient focus within increasingly busy workshops, says Autotech Training. The latest DVSA data reveals that 145 Authorised Examiners (AEs) and 288 MOT testers had their authorisation withdrawn during 2025/26. A further 247 AEs and 176 testers received warnings. However, Rob Walsh, the head of MOT at Autotech Training, says the figures should not be used to suggest there is widespread noncompliance within the sector. Instead, they highlight the responsibility MOT businesses carry and the challenge of maintaining effective oversight alongside the everyday pressures of running a workshop. Rob said: “The vast majority of MOT businesses and testers take their responsibilities extremely seriously. These are busy businesses, often operating under considerable pressure, and compliance is just one of many things a workshop manager may be dealing with on any given day. “That’s why I don’t think these figures should be used to scare garages. They should prompt a conversation about whether the people responsible for an MOT operation have the time, knowledge, and processes they need to manage it effectively.” The scale of that management responsibility is also evident in the latest DVSA figures. There are now 781 more nominated MOT testers than there were two years ago, with numbers rising from 66,144 in 2023/24 to 66,925 in 2025/26. Over the same period, the number of
private MOT testing stations has remained broadly static, standing at 23,092 in 2025/26. While this does not in itself indicate a compliance issue, Rob says it reinforces the importance of effective management at VTS level.
GARAGE HIVE FOUNDER: AI AGENTS COULD TRANSFORM INDEPENDENT WORKSHOPS Autonomous AI agents can now take on some of the most time-consuming frontof-house tasks in independent garages, from handling customer enquiries and routine quotes to managing bookings, according to Garage Hive Managing Director, Ray Dilsons. Speaking on The Blend Podcast, Ray spoke about the changing role of technology within garages and, specifically, how he believes AI is “moving beyond a buzzword” and is delivering practical benefits at the front of house. Drawing on Garage Hive’s latest developments with APIs, Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), and automated communication tools, Ray claims autonomous AI agents may increasingly take responsibility for repetitive, labour-
intensive tasks – including handling initial enquiries, quoting routine jobs, and managing bookings. Ray said: “AI is great at writing code, but that alone doesn’t transform a garage business. The real breakthrough is AI agents boosting productivity to help busy workshops serve more customers without burning out existing staff.” Ray did urge caution too; he stressed the importance of data security, reliability, and understanding of who is behind third-party technology being introduced into garage businesses: “When you plug third-party software into your business, you’re effectively handing over the keys to your company. You have to know who is behind the tools and ensure your core foundation is robust.”

HALFORDS JOINS IAAF The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation has welcomed Halfords Group as its latest member. Halfords says joining the IAAF is a “natural step”, as it continues to play a “bigger role” in shaping the future of the automotive aftermarket. Adam Pay (right), the managing director of Autocentres and Mobile Network at Halfords, continued: “This is a sector that keeps the nation moving, and it’s one we’re deeply committed to strengthening. By working closely with partners across the industry, we can help raise standards, tackle shared challenges and make sure motorists continue to benefit from trusted, expert care at scale.” Halfords says it will also work closely with the IAAF in areas such as lobbying and strategy, as the Federation looks to intensify

its efforts through the Right to Repair campaign. IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field (left), added: “We’re delighted to welcome Halfords to the IAAF. As one of the UK’s most recognisable and trusted automotive service providers, Halfords brings significant expertise and scale to our membership. Their commitment to supporting the future of the aftermarket aligns closely with the IAAF’s mission to strengthen and champion the independent sector.”
YOUNGER AFTERSALES CUSTOMERS FAVOUR SELF-SERVICE OVER SPEAKING TO SERVICE STAFF, CLAIMS SURVEY A new nationwide survey commissioned by Tjekvik and conducted by OnePoll in March 2026 revealed that the majority of younger car owners prefer using a selfservice kiosk for car checks-in rather than waiting for a service advisor. The survey involved 1,000 UK car drivers who use main franchised dealers for servicing and repairs. While 35% of UK car owners as a whole would favour the self-service option, that proportion jumps to 71% among those aged 25 to 34, and 60% of those aged 18 to 24. Persistent queues are the primary reason for car owners to favour self-service solutions when checking in their car at a dealer aftersales department, with 43% of respondents citing “avoiding queues” as the main reason, compared to 31% because it would give “greater flexibility about when I can drop-off and collect my vehicle”, and 18% because it “would give me more time to provide information and select options”. Tjekvik’s survey also found that most aftersales customers prefer to be notified

about a scheduled service, repair, or dealer update via digital means, with 67% preferring to be contacted by email. Those wishing to be contacted by SMS stood at 48%, 32% via mobile or landline, and 23% via app notification. Just 15% would rather be notified in person when visiting their dealer or workshop. Tjekvik CEO, Martin Nørgaard Høgh, said: “Digital solutions are playing an increasingly important role in the daily running of dealerships. By combining digital convenience with the expertise of their aftersales teams, dealers can deliver a more flexible and customer-focused experience to a wide range of age groups with varied expectations.”
Ring has consolidated its headquarters into one building – to improve operational efficiency. Previously, Ring Automotive had two buildings on the same site: Volvox House was a purpose-built, modern warehouse, with office facilities and was used to store finished goods, while Nina Works was the second building on site and used to contain the production facilities, the Quality department, and its sister organisation. All have now been moved and integrated into the one building of Volvox House. Ring Marketing Director, Henry Bisson, said: “This plan has been in motion for some time, as it’s much more efficient strategically and logistically to have everyone and everything in one building. To accommodate the move and ensure we are maximising the space and capacity of the building, production areas and mezzanine floors have been erected, plus new office spaces added. What is amazing is to see how the whole Ring team has embraced this change and continued to deliver for customers while change is happening all around them.” The new offices were opened with representatives from parent company, OSRAM, attending to see the changes for themselves.

INTERVIEW
BEN REVEALS ‘TRANSFORMING’ PLANS TO STRENGTHEN SUPPORT TO INDUSTRY After announcing the appointment of a new chairperson and four trustees, PMF sat down with Ben CEO, Rachel Clift, to ask about these appointments, discuss how the automotive charity is changing its approach to maximise impact, and learn of any exclusives ahead of the annual Ben Ball.

onathan Hewett has been appointed as the new chair of Ben, alongside trustees Darren Edwards, Georgina Hoare, Damian Oton, and Pia Wilkes CBE. The chief executive of Thatcham Research, Jonathan brings “extensive leadership experience” to the role and has a “strong track record in strategy, innovation, and organisational development”. Meanwhile, Darren is the former chief executive officer of Sytner Group, Georgina is the chief executive of the PDA Society, Damian is the chief commercial officer at Motability Operations, and Pia is the chief executive officer of the Vehicle Certification Agency. When asked about how the structure of a chairperson, trustees, and her job of CEO works, Rachel responded: “The chair is my direct point of accountability and leads the board of trustees, who operate in a voluntary, governance-focused capacity. I act as the conduit between the board and the executive team, ensuring strategic plans are developed, approved, and implemented effectively.” Rachel also spoke about her confidence in Jonathan and believes the two of them will work well together: “Jonathan, with a

volunteers, people who give their time back to an industry that has supported them. Rachel said those that serve as the chair or are trustees allow senior leaders to contribute purposefully and make a “tangible difference” to the lives of industry professionals.
HOW DOES BEN MEASURE IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY?
Ben’s mission is simple: to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Whether supporting someone in a crisis, providing care, or working with industry partners to improve the health and wellbeing of the workforce, the philosophy is the same. Whatever the department, whatever the role, Ben is here to support the automotive family – here for employees and their families. But what does support look like in practice? Ben provides health and wellbeing support for life, including helping people with their mental health, physical health, finances, home life, relationships and so much more. Ben offers a free helpline as a first port of call for anyone needing support, SilverCloud – a digital CBT platform to support mental wellbeing, counselling, talking therapies, and life coaching for support with confidence,

The charity also provides guidance and resources to help workers manage physical ailments and maintain general wellness. Financial support is also available with assistance with money worries, debt advice, budgeting, and emergency financial grants for essentials, like food and utilities. On whether this strategy is working and how it is measured, Rachel said: “We measure our impact, not solely by volume or the number of people we support, but by the outcomes we achieve and the difference we make to people’s lives. We also focus on the systemic change we aim to bring to the industry around health and wellbeing.”
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER
One of Ben’s campaigns is the Summer Families Project. Now in its fourth year, the project is designed to support families through the school holidays, helping to ease financial pressures, enabling them to make happy memories. Through the programme, Ben offers eligible automotive families help with food costs, bills, back-toschool essentials, and a paid-for family day out or activity. The project was well underway when PMF interviewed Rachel, so it was an appropriate moment to ask how this particular campaign was progressing. Rachel answered: “Feedback from those who have engaged with the project is phenomenal, but awareness remains a challenge. Many families in the industry

could benefit more if they knew the support was available. We also run a similar project at Christmas, which tends to reach a wider audience.”
WHERE’S THE MONEY COMING FROM?
Initiatives, like the Summer Families Project, are time-consuming and costly. Rachel acknowledged a balancing act is required to ensure more money can be raised to facilitate the additional projects that Ben wants to achieve. She said: “We will need to grow our fundraising and engagement team to handle individual giving, corporate partnerships, and community events. Laying strong foundations over the next three years will allow us to increase our reach, double net fundraising, and triple our charitable impact by 2030.” That means raising awareness to increase demand; Ben’s goal is to increase brand awareness from one in six to one in three industry professionals. The charity focuses on “lifetime connections” with individuals who can act as donors, ambassadors, and advocates for health and wellbeing. Rachel explained further: “While raising awareness increases demand, we rely on a combination of fundraising income and returns from our reserves to support services. We also aim to provide preventative education and resources to minimise crises and influence employers to improve workplace wellbeing.” One way Ben is increasing its awareness is by reinventing its event programme – by modernising and being progressive as a charity. This includes exploring regional events, new types of fundraising activities, and potentially hosting a health and wellbeing conference for the industry. When asked about whether she and Ben wish to work closer with automotive aftermarket stakeholders, like motor factors, garages, and suppliers, Rachel was emphatic: “Yes! We are keen to work with people and businesses, providing talks, resources, and training to help them understand that Ben is here and they can utilise our support services for the benefit of themselves and their teams.”
BEN BALL NOT FAR AWAY NOW!
For PMF, there are several events that mark the end of the year – Ben Ball is one of those. One of the most anticipated celebrations on the calendar, over 600

people will gather in the name of celebrating the sector and raising vital funds to help the charity continue but also expand its services. This year, it will take place on Tuesday, 15 December, at the iconic London Hilton on Park Lane. Rachel revealed the 2026 event will highlight the real-life impact of Ben’s support, feature the return of Charlie Ross for the fundraising auction, live entertainment, and traditional 12 Days of Christmas song. Rachel continued: “Ben Ball has a longstanding heritage of over 100 years and is a key fundraising event. It brings the industry together to celebrate, raise vital funds, and mark the beginning of the Christmas season. It is about connectedness, community, and raising awareness of the
impact of the industry’s support.” Beyond Christmas, though, what is Ben’s long-term vision? Rachel concluded the interview by responding: “Our strategic goals include raising awareness to one in three, doubling net fundraising, tripling charitable impact, and embedding health and wellbeing support throughout the industry. “Achieving this requires internal transformation, external engagement, and consistent community building.” Rachel acknowledged this would not be an easy task, but Ben’s leadership, experience, and knowledge mean it is wellplaced to give it a good go! UFI: HOW WE OVERCAME HESITATION WHEN WE ENTERED THE UK MARKET At Automechanika Frankfurt, PMF sat down with UFI Sales Director and General Manager UK and Ireland – Aftermarket, Karl Ridings. The company is “still young” in the UK but has made gains thanks to its strategy. How are you keeping pace with the competition in such a congested marketplace? First, it’s important to know how we started. We launched the business in March 2017 with just myself and one other person in the office, no customer base other than those I knew from my background in the industry. Next year marks our 10-year anniversary, which is still young for the UK market. We’ve kept pace by targeting the top premium level, working closely with motor factors and offering products with strong OE content and patented technology. This gives motor factors something to sell against the heavily saturated mid-market and maintain a competitive edge.
quality products. We offer a range of materials – from leaflets to technical brochures – covering all product details. While we don’t rely on paper catalogues anymore, high-quality printed materials still make an impact when explaining products to mechanics.
Karl, I believe you used to work in the motor factoring sector? I started as a branch manager and later became a business development manager for Central Auto Supplies, which had 16 branches. That hands-on experience helps me guide my team today, stressing the importance of regular visits, stock cleanses, and face-to-face interactions with garages.
Which products are most popular with garages? General service items – air, oil and cabin filters – are the core. In fact, here at Automechanika Frankfurt, we have launched a new range oil filters for automatic transmissions. Fuel filters are also important due to increasing technology and cost implications, while cabin filters are also tied to clean air and sustainability, which we take very seriously.
Q A
Q A
Despite your knowledge and experience, was there hesitation from motor factors when UFI entered the market? Certainly… Early on, we relied on unique products that no-one else had, which opened doors. Over time, we developed a strong relationship with the customers increasing the range of UFI on their shelves and earned trust by doing things the right way – supporting factors with marketing, training and high-

How has data and accuracy in selecting parts for garages evolved? It’s crucial, so we ensure our catalogue data and listings are precise. Garages must be confident they’re fitting the correct part, and building that trust in the UK market required specific adjustments compared to the European setup.
Q A
Q A
How do you incorporate sustainability into your business? We’ve minimised plastic use in packaging, switching to paper tape that’s stronger and more sustainable. Globally, our company publishes full sustainability reports, but even locally, we focus on small, impactful changes. One example being the change from using PVC plastic tape on our boxes
Q A
to reinforced paper tape. Has filter technology evolved in recent years? Yes! While some think “a filter is a filter,” we’ve introduced innovations, like UFI Multitube engine air filters for the Fiat 500. and Porsche. These help keep moisture out of engines and protect fuel injection systems. EVs are another area. Many, like Teslas, have multiple cabin filters including innovative HEPA filters. This means six filters are needed for a service.
Q A
What do you think the aftermarket’s view of electrification is? There is apprehension, especially among “everyday” garages, which may not yet be confident servicing EVs. Specialist EV garages will likely handle this segment, but education is key.
Q A
Finally, what challenges are motor factors facing today? Technology and the need for ongoing education are major challenges. Trade shows and training events are increasingly important post-COVID, as they allow factors to engage garages directly and build trust.

Let’s be honest… there are the ones you genuinely look forward to seeing, despite the 10 others you’d happily hide under your desk from the moment you spot their car pulling into the car park. Either way, you’ll often be dealing with them. Sometimes you’ll spend 20 minutes helping someone with a service kit that your regular trade customer would order in a 30-second phone call. And, of course, you should always be prepared for the inevitable: “Oh, and also...” just moments after you’ve sent the invoice to print. You have to admire their confidence, though. Whether they’re asking for a “rocket cover gasket” or the “rear headlight”, part of being a good parts advisor is learning to translate what a retail customer actually needs rather than what they ask for. Sometimes it’s less about knowing the parts catalogue and more about speaking ‘fluent retail’. It’s worth remembering that these people don’t live in our world. They don’t care about part numbers, VINs, or sales codes – they just want their car fixed and as quickly as possible. They’re spending their own money, not buying on a company account, so every pound feels personal. That’s why they’ll almost always ask the question you dread: “Can’t you do any better on the price?” In most cases, it isn’t because they can’t afford it; they simply
want to leave feeling they’ve been looked after. Over the years, I’ve found you can give customers that feeling without compromising on price. Instead of selling parts, sell value and confidence. If you’re recommending a premium product, explain why. Tell them “we never have any problems with this brand” or “this is the same manufacturer that supplies Mercedes” or “these wipers will last three times longer than…” Before they realise it, you’ve reinforced that they’ve made the right choice – and people like feeling they’ve made a good decision. The reality is that retail customers can be funny, frustrating, aggressive, or completely confused – sometimes all within the same five minutes. Your job isn’t to change them; your job is to stay professional, control the situation, and supply the right parts with as little drama as possible. If you can do that consistently, you’ll outlast most people in this trade.

PEOPLE & INDUSTRY
Q&A
LEADER SPECIALIST COMPONENTS MARKS FOUR DECADES IN THE TRADE Leader Specialist Components supplies a variety of parts for a range of makes and models – from glow plugs and TPMS sensors to radiator coolant hoses and fuel primer hose pipe assemblies. Celebrating 40 years and recent integration into TecCom, PMF chats with LSC Managing Director, Mark Belcher, to delve into the company’s origins, its ability to supply all makes and why sticking with the UK market is the way forward. Can you tell me about the origins of Leader Specialist Components? My dad, Lee, started the business with Derek Freeman. They both worked for a competitor before setting up as a Vauxhall specialist, selling only to Vauxhall dealers in the UK. That lasted nearly 20 years, with some export into Europe. We are a family business; I am a primary shareholder and two of my sons work for the company. My business partner is Matthew Farmer, while the children of former director, Barry Westwood, are also shareholders. Among the 20 staff, there are several generations of family and close friends. I like the bond and it also resonates with customers. The team has two directors, a general manager, two in B2B sales, six administrative staff handling purchasing, data and accounts, and 10 in the warehouse for picking and packing. We operate from a double-unit warehouse with offices in Surrey.
Q A
How has the company evolved over the years? We gradually expanded into European exports but also into the broader UK market. After I took over with my partner Matthew, we moved into all makes, still keeping under the radar. We sold heavily to Andrew Page, but in the last seven years, we’ve begun selling more to buying groups and independent motor factors – we recently joined TecCom too. We’ve adapted at least five times in 40 years. The most recent change was due to Brexit, which made exporting genuine parts harder and less profitable. We pivoted towards the UK market, aftermarket parts and online sales.
Q A
I
20 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR OCTOBER 2026
Who are your main customers now? We work with a mix of independent motor factors and larger buying groups. We work with the likes of AAG, Euro Car Parts, Rapid Group, IFA and Dingbro.
Q A
What is your primary product range? We are a middleman distributor, filling gaps in the market rather than focusing on one product category. We source small ranges across multiple categories, supplying the parts people can’t get elsewhere. If it sells online and motor factors need it, we try to stock it! We are still well-known as a Vauxhall specialist, but we’d like to come away from the tag – we offer more than that! A lot of customers ask us to find parts when their usual suppliers have issues. We
Q A
can source across Europe, but our main suppliers import from China. How do you manage quality control? We rely on strong supplier relationships and experienced partners, like D2P and Hajus, to personally visit factories. We act quickly on any issues, removing items from sale and working closely with suppliers to resolve problems.
Q A
Are you preparing for EV and hybrid markets? We’ve dipped our toe in, but demand is low because most EVs are still too new. As the market matures and cars age into the aftermarket, we’ll expand into EV parts.
Q A
What makes LSC an attractive partner for motor factors? We offer late cut-offs for next-day delivery, low minimum order thresholds (£100 for free carriage), and flexible, customer-focused service. We let customers build gradually rather than forcing big stock buys.

MODERN TECH
SIMPLY BRANDS ON WHY IN-CAR ENTERTAINMENT IS A GROWING MARKET The motor factor and retail market has changed significantly in recent years, according to Simply Brands. While traditional categories, like bulbs, mats, and air fresheners, still have their place, today’s drivers are increasingly looking for technology that improves convenience, connectivity, and the overall driving experience. This presents Portable Apple CarPlay screens provide a simple and cost-effective solution, a growing opportunity, allowing drivers to add modern according to Business functionality to older vehicles without expensive modifications or head unit Development Manager, replacements. M
otorists are keeping their vehicles for longer, but they still want many of the features found in newer cars. As a result, demand is increasing for affordable in-car technology upgrades that make older vehicles feel more modern without the cost of replacing the car itself. Products, such as portable Apple CarPlay devices, MagSafe phone holders and chargers, and dash cams, are becoming increasingly popular, with consumers looking to modernise their driving experience.
offer several advantages: Strong perceived customer value Growing consumer awareness Higher average selling prices compared to traditional accessories Broad appeal across multiple age groups Excellent upselling opportunities alongside charging and mounting accessories As drivers continue to use smartphones as the centre of the in-car experience, this category is expected to keep growing.
WHY THE POPULARITY?
Phone mounting solutions have evolved quickly over the last few years. Consumers increasingly expect simple, convenient, and clutter-free ways to keep their devices secure while driving. MagSafe compatible holders and wireless chargers have become especially popular thanks to their ease of use and clean appearance. Drivers can securely
Many vehicles currently on the road still lack built-in infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality. However, drivers have become used to having instant access to navigation, music streaming, voice assistants, and hands-free communication through their smartphones.

mount and charge their phones with minimal effort, making them ideal for navigation, hands-free calling, and everyday commuting. Unlike older mounting systems that often relied on awkward clamps or suction cups, magnetic mounting solutions provide a more modern user experience that many consumers now actively look for when shopping for in-car accessories. These products benefit from: Strong impulse purchase potential Modern packaging and shelf appeal Compatibility with daily smartphone usage Growing customer familiarity with MagSafe technology Opportunities for bundled sales with charging cables and adapters As smartphone integration continues to shape the driving experience, demand for convenient in-car charging and mounting solutions is only likely to increase.

security, more drivers are recognising the value of recording their journeys. Dash cams are no longer viewed as specialist products. They are becoming mainstream purchases for everyday motorists. For these reasons, dash cams can help strengthen a modern technology offering while also increasing average basket value. Customers are often drawn to products that offer peace of mind, safety benefits, easy installation, smartphone connectivity, and compact, discreet designs. As vehicles become more connected and technology-focused, dash cams fit naturally alongside other in-car tech accessories, like charging solutions and smartphone integration products.
CONSUMER EXPECTATIONS ARE CHANGING
Today’s drivers expect more from their vehicles, even when driving older models. Convenience, connectivity, and smartphone integration are becoming standard expectations rather than premium extras. Motor factors who adapt to these changing consumer habits have an opportunity to benefit from a category that continues to grow in both popularity and
value. In-car technology accessories are no longer niche add-ons; they are increasingly becoming core convenience products for modern motorists.
LOOKING AHEAD
As consumers continue to modernise existing vehicles rather than replace them, demand for practical technology upgrades is likely to remain strong. Factors who expand their offering to include products, such as portable Apple CarPlay devices, MagSafe holders and

AUTOMECHANIKA FRANKFURT PROVIDES FRONT-ROW SEAT TO PRESENT AND FUTURE PMF is back from this year’s Automechanika Frankfurt, which, as always, was full of intrigue, enthusiasm, hustle and bustle, and a few dramas!
I
t’s the drama where PMF will start actually; there is always potential for a journey to go wrong – it might be delayed or cancelled flights, luggage ending up in a different city or country, or the hotel in reality being different to that seen on the booking pages. This year, it was Frankfurt’s self-service biometric kiosks. After a smooth journey out of Heathrow into Frankfurt, the PMF team thought the journey couldn’t get any easier upon finding these empty self-service machines, ready to scan passports, faces and
I

fingerprints. Upon finishing these checks, we were asked to proceed to a border control desk where an officer would verify details – straightforward, should be in a taxi for the hotel in no time… Turn around a corner to find a queue that stretched the length of the building, continuing further to a left, then to a right, then another left – it was incredible, something never experienced before. The line was moving at a pace that even a snail would be frustrated by. The team was playing games to stay entertained, chatting to growingly impatient passengers – some of whom were anxious about whether they’d make their connecting flight – before a decision was taken to open more desks in a different area. Some walked quickly while others ran as fast as they could to get to the front. It was a chaotic scene, with little guidance from the staff that were on hand. In the end, it didn’t make a difference to the trip – but could this make some visitors think twice about visiting Automechanika
Frankfurt again if this was their experience? Attending the event is a significant investment for a lot of people and businesses, so could this turn them away? Perhaps it was a one-off, but either way, it’s not the way anyone would want to start their trip. Some were also impacted by the air traffic control issues at UK airports – but the PMF team, which arrived at the departure terminal at Frankfurt Airport earlier than planned in case of problems, managed to pass security, catch a slightly delayed flight, and arrive back at the intended destination of Heathrow only half an hour later than scheduled.
OPENING DAY
To the event itself, beautiful warm sunshine greeted visitors on the opening morning, and there was curious anticipation as to what this year’s event would have in store. There had been plenty of build-up material, teasers from exhibitors, but until the doors swung open and stands were seen in

person, there was an element of mystery and surprise. There was an immediate feel of familiarity; PMF has been to enough Automechanika Frankfurt events to know where the halls are, the media centre, the best places to eat and catch a breather! PMF’s commercial team filled gaps in the schedule with meetings with suppliers, while press conferences were scheduled over two days. Ultimately, the objective is to come away with information, news, and stories that will interest readers. Like two years ago, Schaeffler was the first press conference on the bill – where it announced that LuK, INA, and FAG brands will transition to fall under the one Schaeffler brand. Starting with FAG in the second quarter of next year, the company is confident that by uniting its aftermarket portfolio, it is simplifying access to a “broader ecosystem of products, services, and digital solutions” and that it will make the lives of customers easier because they will be able to “identify the right solutions, navigate the portfolio, and benefit from the full expertise of one
AUTOMECHANIKA FRANKFURT REVIEW
trusted technology partner”. However, Schaeffler says the product quality, specifications, part numbers, agreements, day-to-day business processes, and online catalogues will remain unchanged – as well as product labelling. Sales tools, training, and communication will be provided before each rollout step. Brembo was next up, with its Greenance Plus Kit the main talking point. Comprising a new brake disc and pad designed to help reduce environmental impact, particulate emissions, and disc wear. This also included a brake fluid, developed with 84% bio-based materials and a reduced carbon footprint. Brembo’s caliper portfolio has also been
strengthened, with its remanufactured range now featuring an anti-corrosion treatment that, the company says, increases salt-spray resistance to 240 hours. This is in line with OE standards. ZF Aftermarket presented several new solutions but also wanted to emphasise how “close partnerships, a broad technology portfolio, and a connected ecosystem” can help customers respond to a “rapidly changing market”. ZF wants to help customers “resolve issues faster” and “manage increasing complexity more effectively”. It believes this can be achieved by combining remote vehicle data, diagnostics, workshop operations, and parts procurement.

From ZF to OSRAM, which presented a ‘road ready’ theme. Journalists were squeezed onto the stand, with a comprehensive round-up of its lighting and accessories displayed and demonstrated by company experts on a makeshift but well-lit garage. OSRAM’s NIGHT BREAKER LED H11 ECE bulbs received an Automechanika Innovation nomination, recognition for how the company is assisting the change in vehicle lighting and move to road-legal LED bulbs. After racking up 22,000 steps and 16km of walking – some of which were clocked up mistakenly after taking a wrong turn out of the hotel that morning – PMF was glad of a rest and a ‘hydration break’. Step forward, UFI Filters, which offered an aperitif courtesy of the UFI chairman to the automotive media. UFI used Automechanika Frankfurt as a platform to launch transmission filters to the market. An integral part of the gearbox system, transmission filters protect the hydraulic circuit by capturing particles and impurities that may accumulate over time. This ensures transmission oil remains clean and the system runs smoothly. UFI is confident its transmission filters optimise operating costs, comprise reliable technology, boast extensive OE replacement coverage, and offer great performance. This marked the end of a long and intense first day.

THE DAY AFTER
Following a hearty meal and more hydration at a local German restaurant the night before, breakfast was a light and muted affair – but the walk to Messe Frankfurt, again bathed in warm sunshine, and subsequent cup of coffee in the media centre brought energy levels back up. The day began with another press conference – this one at ALLDATA Europe, the provider of original VM repair information. The company announced enhancements to its ALLDATA Repair platform. Among them was Quick Specifications, which allows users to find commonly used vehicle data – information like torque settings, oil grades, fluid capacities, tyre pressures, and timing configurations. This information can now be accessed from any diagnostic device, laptop, tablet, or phone

with an internet connection. ALLDATA also introduced Diagnostic Intelligence to the assembled press. It combines original VM repair information, real-world repair intelligence, and AIassisted insights into one single diagnostic workflow. The hope is that this will create a more structured, faster, and more confident diagnostic process, which will create quicker, more accurate repairs.
EVERY DAY IS A SCHOOL DAY!
While meetings and press conferences are always scheduled, some of the best conversations are actually those that are spontaneous; for example, the sight of an alternator being sprayed with water on SEG Automotive’s stand prompted a quizzical look and a laugh from a member of staff! He explained that this was a 48V boost recuperation machine water spray test – an
important validation procedure that ensures the unit’s environmental resilience. Every day is a school day! With Suplex the destination of PMF’s final meeting – look out for this company in the coming months – the long walk back to the media centre was a time for reflection. Automechanika Frankfurt is a place to get business done; walking through the halls, it was clear from handshakes and deals being signed that the biannual event remains a pivotal part of the automotive calendar. More than 112,000 trade visitors from a staggering 173 countries visited over the five days – a reminder that face-to-face, personal interaction is still very much wanted. Automechanika Frankfurt is indeed the industry’s meeting place. What’s more, over 4,600 of those that entered the Messe were students and apprentices. In an era of AI, software, connected cars, driver assistance systems and alternative drive systems, these are the technologies the next generation need to see, feel and engage with. With the industry crying out for new, young talent, it was great to see the stars of the future immersed in what Automechanika Frankfurt had to offer. Back to the present, this year’s instalment of Automechanika Frankfurt served as a reminder why this international show exists. It gives motor factors a frontrow seat to change. It is the perfect forum to stay informed, competitive and inspired for the future. For more information about Automechanika Frankfurt,

BATTERIES & IGNITION
DENSO DIVES INTO SPARK AND GLOW PLUG TECHNOLOGIES As well as being an OE spark and glow plug manufacturer, supplying many VMs globally, DENSO is also a technical partner of Toyota Gazoo Racing and several other motorsport teams. The company says this puts it in “prime position” to identify and supply distributors with a solution to suit their needs.
D
ENSO says materials used in its spark plugs – such as special ceramic insulators and the precious metals used in the iridium and platinum alloys for electrodes – can withstand very high temperatures in the engine and combustion chamber.
REDUCING IGNITION LAG INCONSISTENCIES
DENSO says the delay time for the ignition lag period can be inconsistent and can vary from one combustion cycle to the next. These inconsistencies will then shorten or lengthen the whole combustion process, which will advance or retard the exact time that the maximum cylinder pressure occurs. Engine manufacturers must, therefore, provide a safety margin for the ignition timing calculations to ensure that ignition timing and combustion do not occur too early. DENSO reports its spark plug technologies include the use of fine electrodes that help to reduce the inconsistencies of ignition lag, and this then allows engine manufacturers to build in smaller safety margins for the ignition timing so that it can be closer to the optimum setting, which improves combustion and engine efficiency.
ELECTRODE SHAPE
DENSO produces a range of spark plugs with different electrode shapes and sizes
I
30 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR OCTOBER 2026
that help to reduce the ‘quenching effect’ for different engine applications. DENSO says bigger electrodes block more of the flame growth, whilst the smallest electrodes will enable improved 3D growth. The company says with its 0.4 mm centre electrode and Twin Tip (TT) technology, smaller electrodes improve ignition and, subsequently, engine performance.
HIGH VOLTAGE SOLUTIONS
To help overcome the challenges associated with needing increasingly higher voltages to create a spark, DENSO produces a range of spark plugs with smaller electrodes – manufactured using precious metals such as iridium. The smaller electrodes reduce the voltage requirement, and the iridium provides a high-temperature-resistant and hardwearing surface for the electrodes. For many vehicles, DENSO’s range allows the standard specification spark plugs fitted to be upgraded, which reduces the required ignition voltage and provides
an “easier life” for the ignition system and should improve engine performance. What’s more, DENSO says it produces a range of spark plugs with electrodes manufactured using precious metals that help to reduce electrode wear. The company says that by applying advanced technologies, like the DENSO TT, it results in better performance over a longer period.
WHAT ABOUT GLOW PLUGS?
Due to the fact that the fuel/air mixture in a diesel engine spontaneously combusts when under high pressure in the combustion chamber, it requires no spark; however, the primary role of the glow plug is to aid the starting process by heating up the mixture – when the engine is cold. Developed in the 1920s, the design remained largely unchanged until the 1970s when external coil technology was superseded by a covered coil, which persists with modern glow plugs today. The single coil glow plugs of the 1970s were gradually replaced by double coil versions in the 1980s. Ceramic glow plugs then took over in the 1990s and instant heating glow plugs became the standard in the 2000s, a design that remains popular today. Unlike spark plugs, which are subject to VM-specified replacement intervals, glow plugs generally have no such stipulation, so how do technicians know when they should be replaced? As with any vehicle component, the
030_PMF_OCT26_Layout 1 23/09/2026 13:07 Page 31
BATTERIES & IGNITION
glow plug has a lifespan, which would broadly be defined by the number of heat cycles it can go through before it starts losing performance. DENSO says this is very difficult to correlate with the distance a vehicle travels annually, because it is associated with the number of engine starts – and latterly diesel after-treatment cycles – the glow plugs have to activate for, rather than the distance the vehicle has travelled. DENSO believes post-pandemic driving habits of fewer journeys and of a reduced distance have had a disproportionate impact on diesel-fuelled cars over their petrol-fuelled cousins, and this is largely because of the thermally efficient nature of the diesel engine and the time it takes to reach its designed operating temperature. As it is fundamentally the temperature of the oil that accurately defines the temperature of the engine, and the oil can often take more than 20km of driving to reach its optimal temperature, this has big implications on the performance of the engine, including the glow plugs. DENSO says the more ‘cold starts’ they make without then reaching their designed engine operating temperature, the faster they will wear out.
To make matters worse, because the glow plug now has a role in the DPF regeneration process, to temporarily raise the temperature of the exhaust gases so they can burn off the soot captured in the filter, DENSO says they have to work extra hard on vehicles that only travel short distances to activate the process that would happen naturally during the course of its use in a vehicle that travelled longer distances. In short, although vehicles are typically being used less, the glow plugs are having to work harder, which means they need to
be replaced more frequently. Consequently, warning signs of potential glow plug problems range from having trouble starting the engine from cold, to an inability to successfully regenerate the DPF. So, despite being a relatively small component, glow plugs have a big influence on the performance of the engine, which is why, DENSO believes, having premium-quality products is important. VELORIS ON WHY 12V BATTERIES ARE HERE TO STAY In this latest insight from Veloris, the battery distributor’s group marketing and product manager, Andy Waite, emphasises the importance of equipping motor factors with the tools they need to meet customer demands – and how it achieves it so 12V opportunities can be realised.
T
he 12V battery remains a high-volume aftermarket component, but with the increasing adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles, some question whether it will remain so. Addressing this question head-on, the answer is yes – but it’s important to understand why and what that means, to best exploit the ongoing business opportunities they provide.
TECHNOLOGY PRIMARY DRIVER OF CHANGE
The 12V battery follows this model, with the introduction of AGM and then EFB batteries, to cater for the requirements of vehicles fitted with a start/stop system. Sales data over the past decade confirms the shift. This change has seen the starter/lights/ignition (SLI) technology, once almost exclusively a replacement option in 2016, now split almost evenly 50/50 with
I
32 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR OCTOBER 2026
AGM/EFB batteries. Although the rate of change in the early years was relatively slow, over the last five years it’s been much faster, which has prompted the fear that when these inherently longer-lasting batteries become the dominant technology, sales will take a significant downturn with profits following suit. However, although the number of batteries that need to be replaced over the next decade may drop, because AGM/EFB batteries are more expensive, the profit that both factors and workshops enjoy from battery replacement is likely to be protected. When it comes to the battery types that make up the bestsellers, we can confirm from our VARTA sales data, the familiar 096 remains at the top; however, reflecting the technology change previously mentioned, it’s the AGM version that is the biggest seller, with the EFB variant in fourth and the SLI in fifth. In second and third places are
the 115AGM and 019AGM respectively. Another factor that is likely to influence the expected downturn in battery sales is the hybrid and EV market, which, at first glance, may look to exacerbate the trend but, on further analysis, could slow it down. Although hybrids and EVs have tended to stay with the VM dealer networks for service and repair, because the majority have been purchased by fleet providers to businesses, rather than to private buyers, many are now close to or at the end of their contract period, so there will be a big increase in private owners, who historically favour independents.
LASTING THE DISTANCE?
As previously highlighted, irrespective of whether they are hybrid or electric, each of these vehicles has a 12V battery and data has revealed that, for several reasons, these batteries typically do not last as long as the AGM/EFB batteries fitted to purely combustion-engined vehicles. Endorsing this position, some VMs now class 12V auxiliary batteries as a three-year replacement item, although many fail even before reaching that date. So, there are many positives to take away from a market that at first glance looks like it’s in decline.
032_PMF_OCT26_Layout 1 24/09/2026 15:56 Page 33
BATTERIES & IGNITION
HOW TO CAPITALISE ON OPPORTUNITIES
Whether it’s the factor supplying or the independent workshop putting in the order, making sure the correct part for the application is delivered and fitted is crucial to both. Although not as complex as many components, the same principle still applies to replacement batteries, particularly as modern vehicles place such a high electrical demand on them. To ensure that both parties get what they need, we are continuing to update our Lucas and Numax references on MAM Autocat, so factors receive accurate reference information. Using the registration look-up option through our website not only confirms the vehicle’s details, but it also reveals the options for Lucas, Numax, Exide, VARTA, and Bosch. In addition to information, like the part number and date range, it provides further useful descriptions, like whether it’s a start/stop battery, its Ah capacity, and an image, to allow for a visual check. Furthermore, we’re confident our branded catalogue underlines how the
company stands out. In our vibrant green branding, there is no missing it! The first to be produced under our new Europeanwide branding and comprising 184 pages, there is no shortage of battery storagerelated information. It also showcases the charging solutions and solar products.
PRODUCT RANGE AND SUPPLY
The practical support we provide includes coverage of the 12V batteries required for electric and hybrid vehicles, from familiar Tesla, Hyundai/Kia, and VAG applications to the emerging Chinese brands in the market. Many modern vehicles now rely on dual battery systems. In models such as the Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport, both batteries contribute to correct
start/stop operation — meaning both need testing and, when required, replacement. As the primary supply partner for Exide, we ensure reliable access to OE-spec products, like the EK151, used across multiple Jaguar and Land Rover applications. We also stock a range of auxiliary batteries, allowing a like-for-like swap during servicing. By providing depth market knowledge and support, we’re confident that we are demonstrating our objectives of delivering energy with certainty, connecting manufacturers to end customers, and providing the best advice and access to new innovations. NISSENS CONFIDENT NEW IGNITION COILS WILL IGNITE TRADE INTEREST With a century-long reputation in thermal management, Nissens is confident it has the expertise, experience and after-sales support to ensure its ignition coils are an aftermarket hit.
S
peaking to PMF, Nissens Head of Marketing and Group Content Director, Jan Zieleskiewicz, explains how the company is supporting motor factors through this expansion: “Complete product master data for fast, secure product identification. “As an acknowledged and certified TecDoc data supplier, we deliver all necessary information for proper cataloguing, including OE crossreferencing, technical drawings, and product images wherever possible. Socalled A++ content is also available for online sellers needing a well-prepared package for their digital audiences.” Jan says the company has gone beyond data provision to boost confidence in a potentially high-risk, high-return category if diagnostics are incorrect. He said: “After-sales and technical support are key parts of our strategy. Ignition coils have been fully integrated into the Nissens Experts programme, so we can offer both online and onsite training. Valuable diagnostic and installation resources are accessible at www.rdr.link/FBF013, providing workshops with the tools they need to reduce misdiagnosis and minimise warranty claims.”
STOCKING STRATEGY CRUCIAL With over 300 references covering more than 2,000 OE applications and 80% of the
European car parc, stocking strategy is critical for distributors. Jan continued: “We work closely with motor factors, using local car parc and VIO data to plan effective stocking profiles. Our European production and robust warehouse network, including UK depots, allow us to ensure fast-moving parts remain readily available.” On how motor factors should present the range, Jan was emphatic: “Our ignition coils are not just another market brand. They feature in-house engineered solutions, advanced materials and undergo rigorous testing. They are engineered for excellence while remaining highly competitive.” Technical engagement is another key pillar of Nissens’ approach, as Jan explains: “Education and communication are vital to building trust. Our experience with turbos, EGR modules and high-voltage AC compressors taught us that proper technical support drives correct market perception and business growth. REASONS TO BE WARY? NO, SAYS NISSENS
Market hesitations around ignition coils often centre on return risk and newcategory uncertainty, Jan claims, but he is confident Nissens has countered this with a
robust, long-term strategy. He said: “We expect this product line to deliver robust revenue and drive tangible commercial success for our aftermarket customers for decades to come. “The ICE car parc is ageing, averaging 12 to 13 years, which ensures strong aftermarket potential. Our ignition coils are part of a broader portfolio of critical engine components, allowing motor factors to offer a single, trusted point of supply for high-performance parts.”
CONCLUSION
Jan’s concluding message to motor factors is clear: “Trust the experts, trust the premium brand, and ignite with confidence with a product line designed, manufactured and tested for exceptional reliability and supported with complete aftermarket solutions.” For more information about Nissens www.rdr.link/FBF015

BATTERIES & IGNITION
RING: WHY THE CORRECT BATTERY SUPPORT EQUIPMENT IS VITAL As the hot weather can damage a battery the same, if not more, as the cold weather does, according to Ring Automotive, the company believes motor factors and technicians should work together to ensure the battery care solutions in the workshop are efficient and ready to tackle servicing.
R
ing says heat generated from the sun evaporates the vital fluids in a battery, so it will send out a weaker charge to other areas of the vehicle. It is also suggested that the warm temperatures also speed up the corrosion process in a battery. The damage this causes to the battery can remain for months at a time, meaning that when the weather turns colder, it’s likely the battery will fail due to the effects the sun had on it. With batteries being a common issue for drivers, Ring believes technicians should have reliable equipment at hand to test and assist with any battery problems that enter the workshop.
BATTERY CHARGER
Ring says there should always be a powerful battery charger on hand at a workshop. Its Professional range of smart chargers, for example, will not only charge
the battery, but due to the nine-stage charge cycle for lead acid/gel/AGM/ calcium/EFB batteries and seven-stage charging for lithium batteries, they can be left connected on a permanent basis – compared to traditional trickle chargers. Ring’s RSCP5024 (top) is a battery support unit, suitable for 12V and 24V vehicles with mixed battery types, including lithium and start/stop. Slim and light, the company says it is suitable for intensive use in garages, as it also has test functions that provide battery and alternator diagnosis, which is crucial to find out the health of the battery. Using the power supply function, technicians can maintain a constant battery voltage level at both 12V and 24V for when appliances, programming, and vehicle diagnostic equipment are connected and drawing power. The multi-chemistry and charging level selection allows the user to set the specific charge required for different battery types.
BATTERY STARTER
There are occasions when a battery just needs a jump start – and Ring’s JUMPSTART PRO 3000 (RJST3000 (bottom-left)) can help. It is a powerful, portable lithium jump starter designed for workshops, mobile mechanics, and fleet operators who need
reliable performance for a wide variety of vehicles. Ring says the RJST3000 is 12V and 24V compatible and will jump-start all petrol engines and up to 13L diesel engines, which makes it suitable for a wide range of vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks and tractors. The unit has been designed to not only be tough but simple to use, so jobs can be done quickly. The interface uses easy-tonavigate lights to signify the different modes and battery status. There is also a warning light that alerts the user if there is an issue with the connection. A solid light indicates reverse polarity protection and a flashing light for temperature protection. Auto voltage detection ensures safe use across different vehicle types. The RJST3000 also has a ‘boost’ function which revives flat batteries, reducing downtime for customers or fleets. With a compact design, RJST3000 only weighs 3kg, while the built-in clamp holders are helpful for storage and keep the wires tidy. Another option is Ring’s ULTRABOOST 2000A (RJS040) jump starter (bottomright), which is capable of jump-starting 8L petrol and 4L diesel engines. The company says it is suitable for the vast majority of the car parc and a handy addition to a workshop. It also has a ‘boost’ button. The ULTRABOOST 2000A is easy to use, Ring claims, taking just 60 seconds to connect and start the engine. It also has a large colour screen that has a battery indicator and colour status, so the health of the battery is easy to determine. For more information about Ring Automotive, www.rdr.link/FBF016

WORKSHOP ESSENTIALS & CONSUMABLES
For 15 years, Kalimex has been the UK’s master distributor of JLM Lubricants and consistently pushed the ‘premium additive’ message. Its managing director, Mike Schlup, reveals if that ethos has made an impression.
KALIMEX ON IMPACT OF ‘PREMIUM BRAND’ MESSAGE D
o you remember when Gerald Ratner made his now-infamous comment about a pair of earrings in one of his stores, supposedly selling for the same price as a prawn sandwich – and not lasting as long? The remark became the defining moment in the collapse of his brand. To this day, Gerald still makes fun of the comment that made him infamous. But strip away the humour and there was a serious point buried in it: quality matters, and products that are built to a price aren’t necessarily built to last. Nowhere is that more apparent than in automotive consumables. At JLM Lubricants, the brand is built on pillars – high percentage of active ingredients, evaluated by technicians, wedded to the Lean philosophy of ‘right first time, on time, every time’ and delivering value for money – and we hope our customers and their customers reflect the same brand and customer service ethos. Research tells us that motorists expect their garage to use premium quality additives – and they will purchase these products for use in-between visits, if the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ is explained to them.

WORKSHOP ESSENTIALS & CONSUMABLES
IT BEGAN WITH THE DPF CLEANING RANGE
JLM Lubricants has built an internally renowned reputation for quality, starting with the now global success of its DPF Cleaning range – using cerium and platinum as the catalysts in these formulas. These products are now being used in workshops daily, in 36 countries. The range is now joined by workshop sprays and car care products: Multi Spray is a versatile light oil designed to clean, lubricate and protect a wide range of surfaces and materials. Shock Spray Freeze and Release is a bestseller with mechanics because it helps to loosen stubborn injectors, glow plugs, and bolts – without having to resort to heat. The spray freezes the metal down to -40°C, and the resulting shock cracks the bond, helping to release the injector or bolt. Importantly, Engine Oil Flush is safe to use with wet belt engines, as it uses a soft detergent-based formula. It is strongly recommended to use an oil flush at each oil change, especially for diesel engines, before adding fresh oil.

With air conditioning systems having worked hard this year, it’s more important than ever to give the system some tender loving care. The JLM Airco Foam Cleaner allows a technician to quickly and effectively clean, freshen, and maintain a vehicle’s air conditioning system. The staple of every workshop is brake cleaner. Traditionally a price-sensitive product, workshops need to consider the health and safety implications of some of the chemicals they are using. The JLM Brake Cleaner is free from carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxic substances. For more information about JLM Lubricants,

FILTERS WITH RECYCLED COCONUT-BASED ACTIVATED CARBON
strengthen material cycles. www.rdr.link/FBF023
At Automechanika Frankfurt, MANN-FILTER showcased new FreciousPlus cabin air filters with recycled coconut-based activated carbon – saving natural resources, reducing carbon dioxide, and strengthening the circular economy. In future, part of the activated carbon used will come from recycled production residue from its own filter media. The brand is the first aftermarket provider to introduce this innovation in series production and reduce the use of natural resources. With the gradual transition of its series products, MANN-FILTER says it is making sustainability “simple for workshops and customers”. Activated carbon in cabin air filters is traditionally derived from the shells of matured coconuts. The shells must first be carbonated and then activated – a process that requires a lot of energy, water, and agricultural resources. Producing one kilogram of fresh, activated carbon requires about 8kg of coconut shells. MANN-FILTER says the use of recycled, activated carbon, therefore, helps to preserve natural raw materials and
