COLLABORATION OVER COMPETITION It’s events season with Mechanex Harrogate and Automechanika Birmingham taking place in May and June respectively. I’ve just received an e-mail to inform me when the annual Ben Ball will take place too – 10thDecember, by the way! After donning my Great Gatsby 1920s black tie attire last year and sharing a 12 Days of Christmas music video that, even if I do say so myself, went viral, I expect my invitation is already in the post!

After the pandemic, trade exhibitions, in particular, took a while to get going again. For whatever reason, confidence dropped, attendances dipped and the hard work to bring them back to life began. Some events continue to struggle while others have come back even stronger.

Instead of just exhibiting, some have bucked the trend and created their own event; I had the pleasure of attending ALLDATA Europe’s Repair Excellence Event at Shaikly Motor Company back in March and Schaeffler’s REPXPERT conference last year. Both events were aimed at uniting the sector, creating collaboration and emphasising that the trade is much better when it is working together.

Unity is one of the messages that the organisers of Automechanika Birmingham are emphasising in the run up to this year’s event. There is a focus on recruitment and retention, specifically apprentices and college students – but will this really bring in and keep new talent?

The event director, Joanna Knowles, told PMF: “Without question, the biggest issue facing businesses is skills and recruitment, and we’re looking forward to presenting our Motorvate initiative to support the sector in addressing the skills challenge. Motorvate is a dedicated initiative for automotive careers, skills and recruitment. It’s aimed at students from schools, colleges and universities, workshop owners, apprenticeship providers, apprentices and mid-career changers.

“Exhibitors within the dedicated area will highlight career paths, as well as training and recruitment options, connecting attendees with some of the UK’s most forward-thinking employers in the automotive aftermarket.

“The event lineup, in terms of exhibitors and our expert panel of speakers, is more diverse than it’s ever been before, reflecting the changing nature of the automotive sector and also the challenges businesses are facing in general.”

NEWS LKQ EURO CAR PARTS EXTENDS PARTNERSHIP WITH HALFORDS LKQ Euro Car Pars has renewed its ‘preferred supplier’ agreement with Halfords’ Autocentres chain, extending its decade-long partnership by a further three years.

Halfords Autocentres support over three million motorists-a-year and has 639 workshops in its network.

RIDGE WEST GARAGE PLACES ORDER TO HELP DRIVETEC PASS MILESTONE DriveTec, available exclusively from GSF Car Parts, has named Ridge West in Hastings as the garage to push the brand over £100 million in sales over the last 12 months.

Ridge West placed the order on 31st March, with a set of brake pads for a Ford Transit Courier.

In recent months, the brand has introduced calipers, rotating electrics, radiators and EV brake pads.

Ridge West Garage Director, Simon Trevena, said: “We’ve used DriveTec and GSF Hastings for over 20 years. is is

DUCKHAMS PART OF 2025 PORSCHE CARRERA CUP GB AND SPRINT CHALLENGE GB LINEUP Duckhams Oils, with its partners at Duckhams Yuasa Racing, has announced it will support Max Coates and Jacob Tos in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Sprint Challenge GB respectively.

Max is an experienced driver who first appeared in the Carrera Cup GB 11 years ago.

A race winner in the Ginetta GT Supercup, Renault Clio Cup, Britcar Endurance Series and Mini Challenge, he finished as runner-up in the Sprint Challenge GB last year.

Jacob, meanwhile, is a relative newcomer to motorsport but clinched the RS Clubsport Am title in the Sprint Challenge last year,

ZF AFTERMARKET Alex Gelbcke has been appointed as head of Europe at ZF Aftermarket.

In a statement, ZF Aftermarket said Alex has been entrusted with “strengthening the European region by elevating customer relationships, boosting employee engagement and driving business growth”.

Alex has moved from LKQ Europe, where he held the position of CEO Benelux and France. He has also held management positions at Tenneco.

Dally Singh has been recruited as key accounts manager – automotive diagnostics and equipment by Thinkcar UK, with the company set to add more members of staff as its range grows.

Dally is accountable for the North of England, Scotland and North Wales. He joins Thinkcar UK following three years with JM Butt & Co.Ltd, where he rose to the position of area sales manager. He brings with him 16 years of experience across the garage equipment sector, including roles with LKQ Euro Car Parts, Andrew Page and The Parts Alliance.

Dally said: “I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into my new role. I will be working with Thinkcar UK’s distribution partners to help them maximise every opportunity. With my existing relationships across the sector, I will also be bringing new partners on board.”

James Shippen has recently joined Ring Automotive’s sales department after being the company’s senior marketing executive for the last three and a half years.

Primarily, James is managing accounts in the Northwest of England, seeking out new opportunities for business development and growth and arranging workouts with customers.

James has more than 12 years’ experience in marketing, three of which have been at Ring Automotive, giving him useful product knowledge and understanding of the aftermarket.

James said: “While I’m sad to be leaving the marketing team, I’ve been helping out in the sales department for the past year alongside my marketing responsibilities and I really enjoyed it.

“There’s a lot of transferable skills from marketing to sales; I always had an interest in the sales aspect of marketing, especially as I specialised in managing stands at events for Ring Automotive. Getting out on the road, meeting new and existing customers, building relationships and explaining our products is something I thoroughly enjoy, so once the sales opportunity came up, I had to take it.”

Our editor, Tom Henman, recently took a trip down memory lane by visiting David Clarke, the owner of the Autosupplies Group. He first encountered the UAN motor factor 12 years ago, so what’s changed?

T

he Professional Motor Factor LinkedIn page is followed by more than 2,000 individuals, and most posts receive decent levels of engagement, but, every so often, a post takes off. That is precisely what happened when PMF shared a photo of David Clarke and his two sons, Tom and Ben, posing outside of the recently renovated Leisureways of Rotherham branch, part of the Autosupplies empire.

The image represents legacy, hard graft and the future of a family-run business that stands tall in an increasingly busy arena of conglomerates. Behind the image is a story

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY: THE CLARKE LEGACY POWERING ONE OF THE UK’S TOP INDEPENDENT MOTOR FACTORS spanning 45 years, one that begins with paint pots and is currently standing as a £22 million turnover business stretching across South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

FROM PAINT ROOM TO BOARD ROOM David began his working life in the trade at just 16, mixing paint in what he describes as a “room about this size”, gesturing to his office – one that is bordered by silverware. Trophies that even the most successful, famous Yorkshire sports teams would be proud of.

In 1990, he opened Autosupplies Chesterfield before acquiring, revamping and changing the fortunes of Butlers Automotive in Barnsley and Leisureways of Rotherham in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Those two branches are managed by Tom and Ben, along with the support at Leisureways from Tom’s partner, Georgia, and David’s daughter, Ebony, and while it would be easy to assume that they’ve simply slipped into the roles, under the supervision and guidance of Dad, they’ve endured a tough path to get to where they are, clocking up the hours and

learning quickly how to manage existing staff and recruit personnel that fit into the Autosupplies culture.

THE CLARKE CULTURE Curious as to the ‘Autosupplies way’, David gave PMF a glimpse of that within the first 10 minutes of our conversation: “I’ve never had a day off in 45 years (apart from holidays)! It was the same through my school life, I never took time off and always attended even when feeling unwell. I had flu before I went to Cambodia recently, and I still worked through it. It’s ingrained in our family. My dad was a railway man – proper working class. He said to me: ‘David, I’ve done 38 years without a day off sick – you’ll never beat that.’ Well, I have. But unfortunately, he’s not around to see it!”

That work ethic and refusal to be beaten are two traits that Tom and Ben have absorbed: “Tom had a really tough first year,” David conceded, “as we had staff that were used to working for the previous regime.

“I remember when I bought Leisureways, and I called a staff meeting.

Somebody asked if their job was safe, and I told them that if they come to work, do a good job, they couldn’t work for a better company. Alternatively, if they didn’t want to come to work and create

“We found a couple of people thieving, another taking regular trips to bookmakers, two taking two hours for lunch. They were getting away with it because the previous owners weren’t interested. We needed to bring in the right profile of person – and quickly – to replace those individuals. Things are much better now.”

Ben, meanwhile, practically lived at Butlers for 18 months. It wasn’t just a

facelift; the transformation was dramatic, with skips of junk removed, walls repainted, branding installed, and stock systems overhauled.

David added: “Ben was lucky to have great staff in place already.”

Both businesses are now thriving, with Butlers and Leisureways recording tidy profits and on the way to another successful year. After putting in the graft – staying up until 3am some days to get the job done – the rewards are now being seen.

David is a proud father: “I’m not just saying this because they’re my lads, but they’ve done fantastically well. I’ve left them a lot of the time to do it themselves, to see how they can overcome challenges and difficulties, because they can’t keep tapping into my knowledge (laughing). Whether they think I leave them to it is a different matter!”

The two lads simply smiled as they tucked back into their lunch. Digging a bit further on this point, I was curious to know if work went home or if they were able to leave professional conversation to within the four walls of the branches.

A pensive David replied: “For me, it’s an obsession – it always has been, and I’ve never seen it as a job. It’s something I love. Sometimes I lose track of time, and I am guilty of wanting everyone to be like me, but they’re not.

“Do I expect Tom and Ben to work the same hours as me? I would have to say ‘no’ because I’m on my third marriage. I want my two boys to work hard and make a success of their life – but maybe not to

the extent that I’ve sacrificed everything to get where I am today.”

Letting go hasn’t always been easy, no matter how hard David tries: “I still want to step in and fix things, but I know I have to pick and choose the times to do that.”

MOTIVATION AND NURTURING While Butlers and Leisureways are part of the Autosupplies family, Chesterfield will always be his first love: “I wanted to have the biggest single motor factor in the country. That was the goal. And I achieved it. But I’m not resting on that.

You’ve got to keep setting goals. It keeps you motivated.”

On the subject of motivation, David is reflective, practical – and a little frustrated. Echoing many a concerns about attracting young people to the trade, David is particularly worried about it on the factor side, not just from a workshop perspective: “We’re interviewing for two telesales roles right now – in Rotherham and Barnsley – but the right people just aren’t

coming into the trade.”

Pressed into why that might be: “Money, mostly,” he said bluntly. “People can earn more working on computers. It’s cleaner, trendier. When I first started, everyone wanted to find a trade; now, they want to be IT experts. It’s not glamorous enough.”

Once the ideal candidate is found, the bigger task, arguably, is keeping them: “We try to bring people in at ground level and train them up, create a positive culture and reward hard work. It’s hard, but that’s the only way.”

Autosupplies has tried different approaches – colleges, schools, placements – but doesn’t believe colleges and schools are supportive enough. Apprenticeships have long been seen as a pathway in, but David’s not convinced by that route: “Chesterfield College used to have a paint department. They’d call me if they had any good students – that’s how we got to know Jade and Ellie – now one is a paint supervisor. But that course has now

been shut down. We’re now working with Barnsley College, and we try to take on young people from a local school for work placements.”

On apprenticeships, David said: “Both of my lads came through apprenticeships, but Ben dropped out. He was doing the same job as someone else but getting paid a lot less, which was not fair.

“While I’ve told my kids that money isn’t everything and they should never chase the cash – find a job you love, work hard and the rewards will follow – there needs to be a middle ground. If employers can show a clear future, something to aim for then that’s a platform to build from. Unfortunately, we (the industry) don’t always show that career ladder.”

COMPETITION: DON’T WORRY ABOUT THEM, MAKE THEM WORRY ABOUT YOU Competition in the motor factor space has intensified — names like GSF and Euro Car Parts have reshaped the landscape.

But David’s stance is firm: “Don’t worry about the competition. Make them worry about you.”

He continued: “When I started, every street had a motor spares shop. Most of the poor ones have gone. What’s left are the best of the best. People like us.”

pandemics and aggressive competitors.

The key? Focus on the business, not the noise: “You can spend two hours worrying about what your competitor is doing or two hours improving your own business. I choose the latter.”

EVs IN YORKSHIRE? There’s been a lot of noise around EVs over the last decade – and it’s only getting louder. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the UK saw a record number of EV sales last year. EV registrations accounted for almost one in five new car registrations in the UK, with 382,000 electric models sold.

But according to David, that buzz doesn’t reflect the reality on the ground, at least not in the areas Autosupplies Group motor factors serve: “We keep hearing EV is the next big thing, but from what we’re seeing, it’s not happening – not yet anyway.”

David recalls being asked years ago to write an article about the shift toward EVs: “Someone said to me: ‘EV is the next big thing’. And I told him it isn’t – not for us anyway. We’ve got to live for today, tomorrow and the day after that. If we don’t get the next few years right, we won’t be around in 10.”

Currently, across its customer base, David estimates there are only three workshops equipped to handle EVs: “And even those

But around here? No.” The demand – or lack of it – speaks volumes: “A supplier tried to sell me EV charging cables,” David says with a shake of the head. “He spent half an hour on it. I

told him he was wasting his time. No one’s asking for them. We’re not getting requests for EV parts. If I were missing sales, I’d know.”

Instead, the business remains focused on vehicles that are coming through the doors – traditional petrol and diesel cars, especially as consumers hold on to vehicles longer during this economic squeeze:

“Let’s be real,” David said. “EVs are expensive. The range still isn’t where it needs to be. And people are tightening their belts. In this mini recession, people aren’t rushing to buy electric – they’re repairing what they’ve already got.”

FINISHING ON A HIGH? Last year was Autosupplies Group’s best year on record – and 2025 looks to be even better – so why is business only getting better for this UAN member?

“We try to improve every day without really stopping to think about it. If we see something we want to change, we do it.”

From adding new product lines daily, to refining van runs and streamlining stock flow – it’s a constant process of evolution: “Last week alone, we brought on over 20 new customers,” David reported. “And when I ask them why they use us, they nearly always say the same thing: ‘You’ve got it in, and you get it here quick. And that’s it.’”

So, is it just service that sets Autosupplies apart? “It’s a mix,” believes David. “Service, availability and price.

Some customers want one more than the others, but that’s usually what it comes down to. Add in product knowledge and a bit of old-school customer care, and that’s what keeps people coming back.”

FACTOR FOCUS

That customer loyalty often spans generations: “There are garages still dealing with us now that I first supplied 40 years ago,” David smiles. “Sometimes it’s the sons or even grandsons of the people I started out with. They’ll say: ‘You used to supply my dad… or even my granddad.’”

It’s a full-circle moment: the Clarke family growing a business that's now supplying third-generation customers, many of whom first met David when he was a teenage paint mixer. The irony isn’t lost on him either: “People think we’re a mechanical factor. But this all started with paint. Just paint. In a room about the size of this one.”

That early experience — hands-on, small-scale and hard-working — laid the foundation for everything that followed.

The commitment to service. The focus on getting things right. The relentless pursuit of improvement, even if it doesn’t always get noticed in the moment.

David concluded: “People see the growth now — the turnover, the profit, the new branches — but they don’t always see the layers of graft underneath it.”

arts supply has improved significantly, compared to the turbulent period following Brexit and the pandemic but challenges still remain. We’re no longer seeing the shortages of a few years ago but delays and unpredictability are still more common than I’d like.

These continue to have a knock-on effect on day-to-day operations and customer expectations.

One of the key issues for workshops is inconsistency. Some parts, especially for older or less common models – and even the latest vehicle models – can still take days, even weeks, to arrive. While core service items tend to be more readily available, anything outside the norm can impact the ability to complete a job, and, as a result, affect our customers. It affects our workshop planning, causes scheduling headaches and can damage customer confidence, especially when we’re left waiting for a part with no clear timescale.

It’s not all bad; it can be much worse for dealer-supplied parts, with longer delays and, in some cases, no ETA available. We’ve got an intake manifold on order with a dealer – nothing is available in the aftermarket – and it’s been four weeks, now superseded and no date at all, other than information that it will take up to 14 days to manufacture… once we’ve got a date!

Communication from suppliers can be hit and miss; some factors have stepped up, providing accurate updates about backorders, delayed delivery or supplier issues. Others still fall short with poor transparency or overpromising on delivery times.

The most frustrating situations are when we’re told a part will arrive next-day or on the first van, only to find it’s been missed off a delivery van or potentially not ordered. We’ve become adept at a ‘shuffling’ work around, because we schedule our ramp and technician time based on what we are told to expect from these suppliers. If it’s missing off a delivery van, we need to move jobs around wherever we can which affects our workflow. That kind of inconsistency not only affects our service levels but also strains the trust we have in those suppliers.

As a result, relationships with factors have had to evolve. Factor supply is only as good as the local branch. We’re lucky in the main, but we’ve become more selective about who we work with. It’s no longer just about price; it’s about reliability, communication, quality and support when things go wrong. Some have strengthened their positions by being proactive and customer-focused, while others have lost business by being slow to adapt or communicate. To me, the latter feels like they have lost sight of what’s needed for a modern supply relationship.

n recent years, the UK automotive aftermarket has faced its fair share of supply chain challenges, as Tim has mentioned; however, Car Spares Factors (CSF) is experiencing a steadily improving landscape. While occasional supply issues remain, many suppliers are making progress. This period has created opportunities to strengthen partnerships with workshops through clear communication, flexibility and a proactive, consistent service focused on customers’ needs and satisfaction.

Compared to the disruptions of 2020 and 2021, parts supply has become far more stable. While certain specialist or electronic components can still experience longer lead times, the availability of most mainstream parts has improved. Suppliers have worked hard to streamline logistics and address backlogs.

Brexit-related customs processes have also become more predictable. Although there are still occasional delays, businesses have adapted, with many suppliers now better equipped to manage cross-border challenges. This stability is helping factors and workshops plan their operations with greater confidence.

One of the most encouraging shifts has been the improvement in supplier communication. Many manufacturers and distributors are now offering more accurate lead time estimates, regular updates and clearer stock availability information. This transparency makes it easier for us at CSF to manage expectations with the garage, fleet and mobile mechanic customer base.

While there is still room for improvement, the trend towards greater openness is a welcome development. Reliable information allows factors to provide better service, helping workshops plan their repairs with more certainty and reducing the likelihood of unexpected delays.

The challenges of the past few years have also highlighted the value of strong relationships. For CSF, maintaining regular, open communication with customers has proven essential. By keeping them informed of potential delays or offering alternatives, we have strengthened our reputation as a dependable partner, which, in turn, generates repeat business and positive referrals.

Despite the earlier disruptions, the evolving parts supply landscape has brought several positives for the business. The increased focus on stock management and supplier diversification has made the company more resilient. By holding larger quantities of fast-moving parts, it can meet demand and reduce the risk of shortages.

Strengthened supplier relationships have also improved our ability to source parts quickly – even in cases where availability is limited.

“What should I hold in stock?”: That’s a question that Ben Kendrick from EEC has been asked countless times over the last 20 years. A simple query that opens the door to a larger conversation about strategy, customer needs and realities of the trade.

TAKING STOCK: HOLDING THE RIGHT PARTS, AT THE RIGHT TIME

T

o hold a wide variety of stock, to cover the vast array of vehicles on the road today, this means covering emissions products, like exhausts, catalytic converters and DPFs. These are critical to completing a comprehensive offering to customers; however, they come with their own unique set of challenges: emissions products are often large, heavy, awkward to handle, and not exactly the most attractive items on the shelf. Let’s face it, no one is going to put a DPF on display for its good looks.

Despite their higher price point, emissions products tend to account for a smaller percentage of overall turnover when compared to faster-moving parts, such as filters, brake pads or spark plugs.

That makes them a bit of a conundrum: important to have, yet not always the easiest to justify in bulk.

On the other hand, service items and braking components are typically easier to store, quicker to sell and come in stackable, uniform boxes. They fly off the shelves in higher volumes and contribute significantly

to your cash flow. Logistically, it’s much more convenient to fill a warehouse with boxes of oil filters than it is to dedicate racks of shelving to variously shaped exhausts.

THE SPACE-TIME-COST TRIANGLE Warehouse space is finite, and the more emissions stock you hold, the less room you have for high-turnover items. This balancing act is the foundation of good stock management. Get it right, you’ll have what your customers need when they need it; get it wrong, you risk tying up capital in slowmoving stock while missing out on faster sales elsewhere.

So, how do you decide what to hold? At EEC, we’ve spent years fine-tuning this process. We use a combination of car parc data, historical sales patterns and national pareto performance to make informed recommendations to our customers. This data-led approach means that the parts chosen are not just popular nationwide but are also relevant to the specific area and customer base any factor serves.

One rule that remains consistent in the UK is the traditional 3:1 ratio of exhausts to catalytic converters to DPF sales. This serves as a good starting point for building an emissions inventory. But what’s more important is understanding how customer demand has changed over time. In recent years, we’ve seen the pareto curve – the 80/20 rule – become even more pronounced in the emissions sector. A handful of part numbers are now responsible for a much larger portion of total sales.

Whereas in the past, some factors would carry 3,000-plus exhaust SKUs to cover over 90% of the car parc, today that same level of coverage can often be achieved with just a few hundred part numbers. In some highly targeted setups, customers are successfully operating with only a few dozen core SKUs and still achieving consistent turnover.

In addition, the advent of same-day suppliers also made this easier as they offer a distress purchase, often across the

Although a premium is paid for this service it allows you to reduce stock holding; however, they can sometimes be relied on too much, affecting margin.

STOCKING IS JUST THE BEGINNING Getting the right stock in the right place is step one – but having it sit on a shelf collecting dust defeats the point. Active stock management is just as important as initial profiling. At EEC, we work closely with our customers to monitor stock performance and ensure that what goes in also goes out.

After a reasonable settling period – usually a few months – we’ll review the customer’s sales data alongside updated car parc insights and national pareto shifts.

If something hasn’t moved, we ask why – has demand shifted? Is the part still relevant? If not, we pull out non-movers and replace them with newer high-demand

parts. This reprofiling process keeps the stock lean, relevant and profitable.

THE FUTURE OF EMISSIONS With the industry talking more and more about electrification, you might be tempted to hold less emissions products. While EVs are growing, petrol and diesel cars still dominate the road. According to recent data, the majority of UK vehicles remain ICEbased, meaning the demand for catalytic converters, DPFs and exhausts is going nowhere – at least for the foreseeable future. In fact, as these vehicles age, the demand for replacement emissions products could increase in the short to medium term. Well-managed stock in this area will continue to deliver strong returns.

Stocking emissions parts doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. With the right strategy, data and support, it can be a reliable source of both turnover and profit.

The key lies in understanding your customer base, tracking what’s working and being willing to adapt when it isn’t.

Redundancy is a difficult experience for any employee to face and also one of the

The first episode covers the importance of selecting the correct engine oil for cars out of warranty. Guy and Adrian reminisce about the ‘not-so-good-old days’ of seasonal oil changes – with thinner and thicker monograde oils for each season – take a tour though turbo and supercharged engine designs before getting down to the main factor affecting engine oil choice, that people are holding onto their vehicles for longer.

With that comes the temptation and danger, according to Morris Lubricants, to switch to a cheaper engine oil that does not meet the correct specifications to save money since the vehicle is no longer in warranty.

Adrian explains why this is a “false economy” and how selecting a cheaper oil with the wrong manufacturer specifications can cost a lot more in the end. As Guy put it: “Penny wise, pound foolish.”

If you do one thing, selecting the correct quality engine oil that meets the vehicle’s requirements, no matter what the age of the vehicle, will help keep it on the road and away from the scrapyard.

The second episode considers which engine oils should be used for newer cars that are still under warranty. With Euro 6 and emissions’ control, engine design and technology all evolving rapidly, there are many important factors to think about when selecting an engine oil.

This includes how the engine oil must work with the wide variety of aftertreatment devices available, as well as some of the demands that go hand-in-hand with the latest hybrid engines with their more challenging intermittent stop-start regimes.

In the third episode, Guy and Adrian chat about the progression towards EVs and the common misconception that these full EVs do not require any lubricant. No petrol, no diesel – but there’s definitely oil in them!

There are actually a lot of similarities between current hybrid cars and EVs. With requirements including coolants and transmission oils. Adrian and Guy delve deeper and examine the lubricant requirements of EVs and also the potential power options for cars in the future.

Antifreeze coolants are the topic for episode four. Monoethylene Glycol – that sounds like it should belong squarely in the chemistry laboratory, doesn’t it? – has an important role to play in antifreeze coolant technology.

Adrian unravels the complexities of the key jobs antifreeze coolants have to perform to maintain a vehicle's optimum running temperature, and how these products also stop freezing and prevent rust and corrosion in the engine.

Also, if you think choosing a car's antifreeze coolant should be based on colour, think again. It has no bearing on the performance and is purely a cosmetic factor!

VIDEO SERIES

Ade and Guy discuss that some passenger cars are being developed with as many as 10 gears, which clearly impacts the evolution of gear and transmission oils in cars. They review how these sophisticated gear systems are a vital element in improving a car's fuel efficiency and help to reduce the emissions of a vehicle, but only if the correct oils and lubricants are used.

To conclude the series, the sixth and final episode takes a look at the range of ancillary products that should be on the shelves of every workshop, which, aside from oils and lubricants, are the ideal ‘go to’ products for tough situations. This includes screenwash, greases, rust inhibitors, brake fluid, MD4 maintenance spray – which Guy admits to using tins of! – and solvent cleaner, to name a few.

The UK automotive aftermarket experienced a challenging start to 2025, according to new data from Factor Sales, the industry’s leading market measurement provider.

AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET ENDURES EARLY DECLINE IN 2025 A nalysis of transactional data from participating motor factors revealed a 3.1% year-on-year (YoY) drop in unit sales and a 3% decline in value for the first nine weeks of the year. This follows a period of growth in 2024, where value rose by 5.5% and units by 0.8%.

Traditionally, Factor Sales excludes the first week of trading from early weekly analysis, as varying opening hours can distort growth comparisons. After this adjustment, though, the weekly tracker showed that only three categories recorded an average value increase: Engine parts posted growth in both value (2.1%) and units sold (4.28%), driven by increased demand for ignition parts and gaskets & seals. In contrast, categories like brakes and miscellaneous showed steep declines. Notably, sales of in-car entertainment systems fell by over 50% in value and 66% in units.

In the report, research claimed that, overall, 38% of drivers reduced their spend on cars – including servicing – is this correlation now being seen in sales figures?

Factor Sales also wonders if advancements in brake technology might be extending component lifespan, and EVs with regenerative braking systems could be further dampening demand for traditional brake parts – did you know that, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 381,970 new BEVs were registered in 2024? That is a YoY increase of 21.4%, compared to 4.4% and 13.6% decreases in petrol and diesel cars respectively.

Did you know that Ivor Searle supplies more than 1,500 distributors in the UK? Perhaps you’re one of them. Feedback and analysis is telling the remanufacturer that demand for its customer own unit engine reman service is high.

WHY THE DEMAND FOR CUSTOMER OWN UNIT ENGINE REMANUFACTURING IS RISING W

hile the market for the remanufacturer’s ‘off the shelf’ car and LCV engines remains strong, Ivor Searle reports that its customer own unit (COU) remanufacturing is also expanding, especially for late model engines and hybrid units where there’s limited or no core available. COU solves the availability problem by providing a solution to workshops when an exchange unit is not immediately available.

Extended vehicle replacement cycles and leasing terms are key drivers behind the growth in COU remanufacturing, according to David Eszenyi, Ivor Searle’s commercial director: “Factors across the country, as well as our customer service team, are reporting an increase in enquiries from leasing companies for late model replacement engines and hybrid powertrains for vehicles that have had their leasing periods

extended beyond the typical 36-month term and are no longer subject to OEM warranty cover.

“Because these vehicles are still comparatively new, sourcing old core is highly challenging and the supply of OEM parts is also limited. This has significantly increased demand from factors for COU engine remanufacturing, helping them to support workshops in getting their customers back on the road.”

HOW IS IVOR SEARLE MEETING DEMAND? In order to meet this demand and providing parts are available, Ivor Searle has reduced the turnaround time for COU engine remanufacturing from 20 to 15 working days from receipt of the failed unit, as well as deploying more engine builders to the department, fully

utilising the remanufacturer’s inhouse skills and engineering ability.

The COU service is a straightforward process which involves collection of the original failed engine from the customer’s workshop and returning it to the Ivor Searle factory in Cambridgeshire where it undergoes the same inspection, cleaning and remanufacturing processes as the ‘off the shelf’ range. Remanufacturing is carried out in accordance with BSI AU 257:2002, the British Standard Automobile Series Code of Practice for the remanufacturing of internal combustion engines. Ivor Searle COU engines are also provided with a 12-month unlimited mileage warranty.

EQUIPMENT FOR SERVICING EVs AND HYBRIDS – WHAT SHOULD YOU BE STOCKING? The first is the 9051 EV tool kit… It contains the necessary requirements for emergency EV service and repair work: high voltage PPE, safety signage, an insulated tool kit that includes sockets, pliers, screwdrivers and spanners, plus a voltage absence tester to ensure the vehicle is safe to work on after the main battery has been disconnected. All designed for safe operator use on live voltages up to 1000V AC / 1500V DC.

Next up is the 9052 EV technicians pro tool kit, which contains what’s in the 9051 kit but with the addition of two high-voltage test meters: a 1000V digital multimeter, complete with insulation function test, together with a 1000V milliohm tester. This is suitable for testing and checking resistance in high-voltage circuits, where even a small resistance issue can cause fault codes and component failures. Useful for diagnosis of motor-winding and cabling resistance issues, where the resistance measured is much lower than the standard multimeter can show. Also included is an EV warning wing cover.

Laser Tools hasn’t long introduced three EV safety tool kits, all supplied neatly in heavy duty tool bags.

The 9053 EV recovery operators’ safety kit has been created for roadside recovery operators, and includes high-voltage PPE, including a cartridge facemask to protect from gas emissions from the battery. Also included are safety signage and warning signs to identify the vehicle as being a high-voltage risk area. The voltage absence tester is also in this pack together with a useful thermal imaging camera to verify that the EV battery is at a safe temperature. This can help the operator spot heat build-up on the external battery casing, which could be an indicator of the start of thermal runaway.

Its function is to improve the quality of the air that occupants breathe, removing dust, pollutants, pollen, allergens, bacteria and mould.

UFI claims this combination not only blocks pollen, dust – including that from tyre wear and brakes – and road dirt, but also prevents the growth of fungi, mould and block substances, like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

ARGENTIUM also includes activated carbon, which gives a filtration efficiency of over 98.5% for particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns. This eliminates harmful gases and unpleasant odours. UFI reports that this is also effective against microbial growth throughout its life cycle of up to 12 months.

HEPA filters for EVs UFI is ready to produce high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters – currently destined for OE of BEVs and will be available to the aftermarket soon.

UFI says its HEPA cabin filters have an efficiency of 99.975% for particles smaller than 0.3 microns: one thousand times smaller than the diameter of a hair. This means the filters trap atmospheric particulates and fine dust particles, as well as most bio-contaminants in the air.

INSPECTION LIGHT OSRAM has launched an inspection light that has three separate attachments, creating a three-in-one solution.

Coming in a handy and compact case, the LEDinspect 3-in-1 inspection light kit (LEDIL417) is the first of its kind in the OSRAM portfolio. The three attachments are a standard torch attachment, a thin inspection lamp attachment – with two hinge positions, which rotate 180° and 230° respectively – and a ‘gooseneck’ light attachment that can bend and twist to illuminate hard to see locations across the whole car.

The handle base can be used for every attachment; each comprises of four lighting modes: high, medium, low and flash. There is also a magnet on the handle base for hands-free, while the end of the gooseneck light attachment is also magnetic. OSRAM claims this is helpful if the user needs to retrieve screws or small objects in hard-to-reach places.

Its all-in-one solution provides everything the technician needs to carry out a professional clutch and flywheel replacement.

Whenever a dual mass flywheel (DMF) or double clutch (2CT) is diagnosed as worn by the workshop and needs replacing, Schaeffler engineers always recommend renewing both at the same time. The two components can work together, via a toothed flange, so replacing only one could lead to mismatched wear and performance issues, risking possible future problems and additional costs through early follow-on repairs. TECHNICAL BRIEF AUTOELECTRO REVEALS COMMON ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS Communication faults, clutch pulley failures and a lack of software updates are among the most common reasons for modern alternators to fail on vehicles, according to rotating electrics remanufacturer Autoelectro.

AEC1777: Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2 1.4 models (2003-onwards) A three-pin ECU-controlled alternator – often referred to as Ford Smart Charge – this is supplied with a warning notice advising that there could be a 3.5A discharge fault. If the battery fitted to the vehicle is a standard lead type battery and not the recommended sliver calcium, then the alternator will not function correctly.

AEK2971: Honda Civic/CR-V/Accord 2.2-2.4 models (2006onwards) The old cores are often returned because of clutch pulley failure. Consequently, this part number is supplied with an advisory notice that a replacement belt should be fitted and the guide pulley removed. This will reduce the pressure and torque on the clutch pulley.

AEG9005: Peugeot Partner/208/3008/5008, Citroën Berlingo/DS3/C3/C4 1.6 diesel models (2010-onwards) The note packed into this alternator’s packaging advises that the part must be fitted with an AGM battery as it is an iStARS (integrated Starter-Alternator Reversible System) alternator. Whilst these vehicles are fitted with a traditional starter motor for cold starts, this iStARS alternator replaces the conventional alternator and starter motor to provide the combined function of the two components for a better drive.

AEG9023NU: Audi A6, A7, A8, SQ5, SQ7, Q8 3.0 diesel MHEV models (2019-onwards) Autoelectro is currently offering a genuine OE 48V MHEV Belted Starter Generator (BSG). It is connected to the vehicle via a five-pin plug.

The first piece of technical advice Autoelectro offers, before even touching the BSG, is to make sure the vehicle software is up-to-date. If the firmware on the vehicle is not consistent with the BSG’s ECU signal, it can cause communication and charging issues.

WHAT CAUSED ‘JERKING’ WHEN ACCELERATING? A diagnosis was required for a 2020 Škoda Karoq 1.0 TSI after the vehicle’s owner brought an unusual problem to the workshop – ALLDATA Europe, via ALLDATA Repair, came to the workshop’s aid.

The customer reported ‘jerking’ when accelerating, but, despite clear symptoms, the vehicle’s fault memory did not show any corresponding indications.

The technician took the vehicle out for a test drive, where it was confirmed that, at higher speeds, significant vibrations were felt throughout the vehicle, particularly in the steering wheel.

A quick diagnosis would be tough because there were no error codes or messages displayed on the dashboard – but the technician was confident that the cause would be mechanical, rather than electronic.

Solution The technician turned to ALLDATA Repair. A targeted search for “vibrations” led the professional to the technical product information from the VM. The data showed ‘incorrect wheel balancing’, ‘rim damage’ or ‘tyre deformation due to prolonged inactivity’ as common causes of wheel vibrations.

Consequently, the workshop technician inspected the wheels and tyres, with a measurement showing that two wheels had a significant radial and lateral run-out – a problem that is not immediately visible but can cause severe vibrations.

The professional was able to balance the two affected wheels and position the tyres accurately. Upon another test drive, the jerking had stopped, and the vehicle ran smoothly once more.
