Discovering solutions When many people think about plumbing and heating, thoughts will often turn to larger items such as boilers, baths, toilets, showers and radiators as these are often the most visible products around the home. From an installer’s point-of-view of course, the less visible items hold just as much importance: fittings, valves, pipes, clips etc... Equally vital are consumables – things like solder, flux, solvent cement, sealants... the list goes on. And then there are all the tools that are so crucial to everyday work. While it is second nature to use tried-and-trusted methods and products to complete jobs, from time-to-time it is worth looking about to see what alternative solutions have to offer. Anything that can help to improve results, and/or reduce time spent on a job is worthy of consideration. One example is press fittings. Already being used by many installers, this method removes the need for hot works while promising time savings. Of course, there is also the investment in tools, jaws and fittings to consider. There are details about the Novopress ACO 103 press tool on page 44. Another area in which a different solution could be gaining traction is in the bathroom. As an alternative to tiling, bathroom wall panels come in a growing range of designs to suit a client’s requirements and could help installers deliver faster retrofits. A survey by one manufacturer recently found 58% of fitters citing quicker installation and better all-round value as the reason they started using panels. You can read more on page 8. A recent innovation from Arctic Hayes by DiversiTech UK is a new Smart Freeze Clamp, which together with an app can help installers monitor the ice plug the company’s Pipe Freeze solution creates in a pipe. Find out more on page 32. Discovering solutions designed to make jobs quicker and more straightforward can in itself be time consuming. Each month PHPI aims to keep you across new solutions in one handy read. Alternatively, head across to the PHPI website to keep up-to-date with the latest details.

SURVEY REVEALS IMPACT OF SUMMER HEAT

TRIANCO INTRODUCES HEATING SYSTEM DESIGN SERVICE UK heating manufacturer Trianco says it is reinforcing its commitment to installers with a comprehensive package of technical support services, including a free heating system design service. Trianco has developed a dedicated in-house Design and Specification team to support installers – and according to the company installers can submit property plans, and ‘Trianco’s experts will design a complete, tailored heating system at no cost’. Trianco’s Managing Director, Peter Beighton, said: “We understand that today’s installers are under increasing pressure, not only to deliver projects efficiently, but to get complex low-temperature systems right first time. Our free design service is all about removing that burden. By providing a complete, tailored system design from plans, we give installers the confidence that every element, from heat pump sizing to radiators and pipework, has been specified correctly.”

More than half of UK tradespeople (58.8%) say their work has been disrupted by this summer’s heat, according to new research from Rhino Trade Insurance. The survey of 1,079 sole traders and small trade businesses found that soaring temperatures have slowed work down, forced early finishes, and in some cases led to heat-related illness on site. Rhino surveyed tradespeople across the UK, including plumbing, gas and heating engineers, electricians, carpenters, builders and gardeners, to understand how this summer’s heat has affected their work, their health and their outlook for the future. The most common impact was a slower working pace, reported by 70.8% of tradespeople, followed by finishing work early, reported by 46.7%. Over a quarter (27.4%) finished work early on four or more days this summer, including 6.6% who did so on more than ten days. Troy Stevens, CEO at Rhino Trade Insurance said: “Tradespeople are the backbone to the country, and there is serious concern amongst the self-employed on the effects that the heat is having on them now, and in the future. Jobs are already being postponed due to the heat, affecting productivity levels, as well as hitting tradespeople in the pocket. Nearly one in five tradespeople telling us that they, or someone on their team, has been unwell from the heat is alarming.”

BRITAIN’S TRADESPEOPLE ARE BUILDING £2MILLION BUSINESSES

Michael Steckler, CEO, Tradify

Drawing on data from 3,271 UK trade businesses, analysis by Tradify, which provides job management software for tradespeople, reveals that tradespeople are successfully scaling from sole traders into sizeable companies employing teams and generating multi-million-pound revenues. The new Tradify research suggests some are building trade businesses that generate up to £2 million in annual revenue. Overall, average revenue across the six major trades analysed has increased 14% year-on-year. Among larger businesses employing 13 or more staff, average annual revenue exceeded £2 million in both Electrical & AV (£2.09m) and Property Maintenance (£2.02m), while Plumbing & Gas businesses approached the same milestone (£1.99m). Commenting on the findings, Michael Steckler (pictured), CEO, Tradify, said: “Our data shows tradespeople across the UK building multi-million-pound businesses, creating jobs, and growing successful companies from the ground up. The trades shouldn't be seen as an alternative to academic success, but as another route to achieving real financial success – one that can lead not only to skilled employment, but to business ownership and long-term growth.” For more information and full report insights please

IDEAL HEATING CELEBRATES £325,000 MACMILLAN FUNDRAISING

GRANT UK’S NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH BATH RUGBY

Ideal Heating has invited representatives from Macmillan Cancer Support to its headquarters to celebrate the milestone of £325,000 raised for the charity. The heating manufacturer has raised funds for Macmillan since 2018, supporting the charity with its work to help people living with cancer and their families. Miriam Moore, HR Director, Ideal Heating and Groupe Atlantic UK and Republic of Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to have reached the £325,000 milestone, but we’re not stopping there. Our colleagues continue to find new and more creative ways of raising money, which reflects the community spirit and ethos we have embedded within our business.”

After over a decade since it first sponsored Bath Rugby, Grant UK has announced a new three-year sponsorship deal supporting the club. As an Official Partner and Club Sustainability Partner, the new partnership will see Grant UK supporting the Blue, Black and White on the field while also working with Bath Rugby as it embarks on its next chapter with the redevelopment of The Rec.

AIRCON DEMAND SURGES – MYBUILDER.COM DATA REVEALS

New chapter

According to MyBuilder.com, requests on their platform for air conditioning installation in the UK has grown by 150 per cent year on year. The increase comes as the UK has faced a number of summer heatwaves. Andy Simms, a home expert from MyBuilder.com said: “Unfortunately, many of our homes are just not equipped to deal with extremely hot weather. Historically, homes in the UK have been built more with the idea of keeping heat in than letting it out.” He continued: “We’re seeing a rise in demand for these systems as the heatwaves continue, and more Brits than ever realise that air conditioning may be becoming a necessity as temperatures continue to rise.”

The agreement includes the placement of Grant branding on all three match kits and the replica shirts as well as pitch-side advertising during home fixtures. “This three-year sponsorship deal marks an exciting new chapter for Grant UK’s partnership with Bath Rugby,” commented Anna Wakefield, Head of Internal Sales and Marketing at Grant UK.

NEW EUA PRESIDENT Energy trade body, EUA (Energy and Utilities Alliance), has announced its new President as Henrik Juhl Hansen, Managing Director of Vaillant Group UK & Ireland. Henrik Juhl Hansen said: “I look forward to the fresh challenge of being President of Henrik Juhl Hansen, Managing Director of EUA, a trade body that can look back over Vaillant Group UK & Ireland 100 years of history and looks forward to meeting the challenges of the energy transition. Working with over 250 member companies is a privilege and a great responsibility as we drive forward with the changes the UK needs in adapting to a low carbon future.”

SPECIAL REPORT

RAPID PROGRESS Need for speed drives surge in bathroom wall panel demand, new Wetwall survey reveals.

H

omeowner demand for quicker bathroom renovations has led many professionals to choose wall panels over traditional tiles, according to the results of a new installer survey. A study of 250 professional bathroom fitters, commissioned by Wetwall, found that every installer surveyed has used them, and almost 99% still use them today, indicating that wall panels are no longer an unfamiliar option but an installer go-to essential. According to the survey, 59% of installers say they first began using wall panels because customers specifically asked for them. That interest from homeowners has surged in recent years, according to the survey, with 87% of installers reporting increased customer uptake in wall panels over the past one to two years.

The need for speed The research shows that speed is one of the strongest forces influencing this product choice. 58% of fitters cite quicker installation and better all-round value as the reason they started using bathroom panels, while 55% adopted the product because wall panels allow them to complete projects faster than traditional tiling. And while speed may be the main catalyst for installers, quality is a major factor in the decision process for their customers. Installers report that durability and reliability are the top priorities for homeowners (62%), followed closely by a premium finish and visual appeal (59%).

Commercial growth The data also reveals that wall panels are no longer confined to residential refurbishments. While this remains the largest area of use, installers report an uptake across commercial and contract projects. Joanne Mailen, Product Lead at Wetwall, said: “This research highlights a clear shift in the way installers and homeowners are approaching bathroom projects. Wall panels are playing a significantly more important role in bathroom renovations,

8 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

delivering clear benefits for both installers and homeowners. “What was once seen as a relatively inferior alternative to tiles has become a first choice solution for many installers and that shift is being driven by homeowners themselves. The increased breadth of decors combined with quick, straightforward installation and product reliability, clearly appeals to homeowners who want to achieve their dream bathroom with minimal disruption. Designed to ‘fit and forget’, wall panels also remove concerns around ongoing maintenance, such as the constant upkeep that grout joints require. “Homeowners are also beginning to use panels far beyond the bathroom environment. Installers tell us that customers value being able to instantly update and transform multiple rooms throughout the home; including utility spaces, boot rooms and cloakrooms. It’s the same for commercial clients where speed of installation, design and long-term performance are key. It’s these factors that are driving category growth and encouraging more customers to opt for wall panels over traditional tiling.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pcd002

WHAT’S IN A PUMP?

Adam Ferneyhough, UK Country Manager at DAB Pumps, looks at what goes into a quality pump.

L

ook at any pump and you would be forgiven for thinking they generally look the same. But often, the difference lies beneath the surface. It’s not just about the outer casing, it’s about the internal workings, the precision engineering, and the technology that drives the system. Take a look at the cut-away of the Divertron, a submersible cold water automatic pressure booster pump that combines the pump, electronic control and automatic operation into a single unit. As with all quality pumps, it's what's inside that makes the difference. Designed for use in wells, rainwater harvesting systems, tanks and cisterns, the Divertron automatically starts and stops in response to water demand, maintaining a dependable supply for domestic use, garden irrigation and light pressure boosting applications. By integrating the electronic control system within the pump, it removes the need for separate external controllers, helping installers achieve a quicker, cleaner installation while reducing the number of components on site. Precision-engineered hydraulic

components, durable materials and intelligent electronic controls work together to deliver dependable performance, minimise maintenance and provide years of reliable operation. For installers, that means greater confidence that the job will perform as expected long after they've left site.

12 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Compact Pumps The domestic market is also driving another significant trend: smaller, quieter pumps that can be installed inside the home without compromising on performance. As modern homes continue to shrink plant room space – and homeowners increasingly expect systems to be discreet – compact booster sets have become an attractive solution for installers. The DAB Esybox Pop has been developed specifically for these applications. Its compact footprint makes it ideal for boosting water pressure in houses and apartments where space is at a premium, while its low operating noise means it can be installed in utility rooms or other occupied spaces

without becoming a nuisance. For families struggling with poor shower performance or inconsistent pressure at multiple outlets, a compact booster such as the Esybox Pop can transform day-to-day living by delivering consistent water pressure throughout the home. Compact size is only part of the story. Pumps are becoming increasingly intelligent, giving installers greater visibility during commissioning and maintenance while offering homeowners more control over their systems. DAB's H2D app enables compatible pumps to be monitored and managed from a smartphone, providing quick access to operating information, performance data and system settings. This not only simplifies commissioning but can also support faster diagnostics should an issue arise. The NG Panel builds on this connected approach, providing an intuitive interface for system setup, monitoring and management. Together with the H2D app, it demonstrates how modern pumping solutions are becoming smarter and more connected with both installers and

Manufacturing

homeowners. As expectations around connected homes continue to grow, intelligent pump technology is becoming just as important as hydraulic performance.

Scaling Up For larger residential or commercial projects, the demands are higher, but the principles of quality remain the same. The Esybox Max is our integrated pumping system designed for these exact scenarios. Looking at its internal structure, you can see the robust electronic vertical multi-impeller pump, the advanced display, and the Wi-Fi module. Esybox Max also features a modular design. The support base (Esydock) and wireless communication between the pumps mean you can easily assemble single, double, triple, or even quadruple systems directly on-site. This O.S.A. (On Site Assembly) concept is a game-changer. It means one person can often handle an

intelligent pump technology is becoming just as important as hydraulic performance installation that would typically require a team, saving time and reducing labour costs. The Esybox Max also utilises a water-cooled permanent magnet motor. This choice of material and cooling method makes the pump incredibly quiet, a crucial factor when installing in residential buildings where noise can be a nuisance.

The quality of a pump is intrinsically linked to how it’s made. Our manufacturing facilities in Italy are a testament to this. We produce over two million items annually and each one must meet our exacting standards. It’s this dedication to quality control that ensures when you install a DAB pump, you’re installing a product built to last. So, why does all this matter to installers? Because a quality pump is an investment in your business. When you choose a pump with superior internal components, like those found in the Esybox line, you’re choosing reliability. You’re reducing the risk of breakdowns, which means fewer emergency callouts and more time to focus on new jobs. For more information please www.rdr.link/pcd003

KEEP DRY

Chris Haycock, Technical Support Engineer, Altecnic, provides some insight into company’s Dry Trap Tundish.

E

very unvented hot water system requires a safe means of discharging water from pressure and temperature relief valves. A tundish provides a visible air gap, allowing installers and homeowners to identify when a pressure or temperature relief valve has discharged. Conventional tundish installations often require connection to a trapped gully to prevent foul odours travelling back into the building. The Altecnic Dry Trap Tundish offers a compact solution by combining the functions of a tundish and dry trap into a single product. This article explains how it works and highlights the key features.

Inside the tundish, an internal stainless-steel spring-loaded disc automatically opens under discharge pressure and closes once the flow has stopped, creating a dry trap seal that prevents foul odours from travelling back up the discharge pipe.

WFHA LAUNCHES

New Trade Association for the UK’s Wood Fuel and Heating Sector.

T

he newly established Wood Fuel and Heating Association (WFHA) has launched with a commitment to strengthen representation for businesses across the UK's wood fuel and heating sector. WFHA Chairman Terence McCracken said the association was created in response to growing concerns that parts of the sector lacked effective representation and that the industry's contribution was increasingly being overlooked. "The wood fuel and heating sector is built on a fully integrated supply chain, but over time many parts of that chain have become disconnected. There was a clear

need to bring the industry together, provide stronger representation and ensure our voice is heard." “We're here to listen, represent and champion the sector," said Terence. "Our goal is to ensure businesses operating within wood fuel and heating have a voice in the conversations that shape their future.” “What excites me most is the opportunity to build a stronger, more confident and better-represented sector. It's time to bring our industry back into the spotlight and ensure the expertise, innovation and positive contribution it delivers are properly recognised.”

VOKÈRA PINNACLE BOILER

Neil Mattock, Marketing Director at Vokèra, takes us on a deep dive into the company’s Pinnacle boiler range.

W

hen we set out to design the Pinnacle range, the brief wasn’t just to “build an efficient boiler.” Efficiency is no longer a point of differentiation in its own right; every manufacturer in this market can point to strong ErP data. What we wanted to know was where installers lose time, and where do potential callbacks come from? The Pinnacle was engineered around the answers to those two questions, and it's worth discussing what that looks like in practice.

Matching output to demand Every Pinnacle model runs a 1:13 modulation ratio, enabling the boiler to match its output to demand. This reduces cycling, lowers energy consumption, and maintains more consistent indoor temperatures than a boiler that repeatedly fires at full power and cycles off. This is paired with soft-start ramping logic. Rather than restarting at full bore, the Pinnacle begins at a reduced output of 60% of the range-rated capacity for the first 15 minutes, only stepping up if demand continues.

16 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

It’s a small thing on paper, but with typical UK heating patterns calling for short bursts of heat rather than prolonged operation, less frequent restarts reduce strain on components, minimises unnecessary energy consumption and cycling losses. Active Combustion Control (ACC) uses adaptive electronic combustion technology to ensure consistent, efficient operation, automatically adjusting the air-to-gas ratio even where gas quality varies. The boiler is supplied ready for natural gas, and the same ACC system allows conversion to LPG without any conversion kit.

Like-for-like A lot of installer time on replacement jobs is lost to pipework that doesn't line up. The Pinnacle's hydraulic connections use a universal DIN layout, specifically to support straightforward like-for-like replacement and consistent first-fix alignment even in the restricted spaces so many UK boilers end up living in, helped along by a compact chassis. A built-in filling loop is standard across the Pinnacle combi models too, simplifying system pressurisation both at commissioning and for homeowners topping up afterwards. A built-in seven-day screed drying programme is also included as standard, supporting safe, controlled drying of newly laid floors during commissioning.

016_PHPI_OCT26_Layout 1 04/09/2026 17:19 Page 17

Flow rates Since launch, the Pinnacle range has established itself as a cost-effective solution, combining high efficiency with components designed for longevity and reliability, such as the advanced stainless steel heat exchanger. It is backed by a newly engineered DHW plate heat exchanger on the combi models, which deliver strong flow rates at a 35°C rise (10.2, 12.3 or 14.3 litres per minute depending on model), for consistent hot water performance even across multiple outlets. For added safety, every Pinnacle includes CO monitoring with automatic shutdown, alongside a DHW temperature lock which reduces the risk of scalding and prevents accidental adjustment.

Smarter servicing There is an option for the installer to set a ‘Call for Service’ alarm, which alerts the customer at 48 weeks that a service is imminent, while the boiler continues to operate as normal. Alternatively, setting

the ‘Stop for Service’ feature causes the boiler to cease operation at 52 weeks, until a full service has been carried out. The Pinnacle retains a condensate record, another useful diagnostic feature for the installer. The boiler’s software logs periods of condensing in the main heat exchanger that exceed 30 seconds and calculates a running total, accessed via the touchscreen menu, to guide the engineer on whether a full or interim service is required. At 2,500 hours, the boiler displays an alarm to indicate a full service is required, while continuing to operate normally.

Simple commissioning The Pinnacle's full-colour touchscreen interface uses icon-led navigation, and it's designed to achieve two things: it makes commissioning faster to work through, and it gives installers a genuinely useful handover tool, with an on-screen guided

tour of the boiler’s features that homeowners can be walked through directly. Preheat settings, date and time, choice of metric or imperial units and a choice of twelve on-screen languages can all be configured during installation. To support all of this in the field, we worked with our technical trainer, David Iszchak, to put together a series of fifteen video tutorials, available on Vokèra's YouTube channel. Rather than a single generic walkthrough, the series is broken into specific tasks, such as gas type conversion, range rating, pump cycle adjustment and condensate record settings, so an installer on-site can go straight to the two or three minutes that answer the question they have at the time. The Pinnacle range is backed by a 12-year warranty as standard. For more information on the Pinnacle range please www.rdr.link/pcd005

TRIANCO’S ACTIVAIR INDOOR HEAT PUMP

Following the introduction of Trianco’s Activair Indoor Heat Pump, PHPI caught up with Peter Beighton, Managing Director, from Trianco to find out more about the new range.

We've designed the system to accommodate ducting runs of up to 10 metres, giving installers much greater freedom when deciding on the most practical location within the property.

Q

Can the Activair R290 also provide domestic hot water?

Absolutely. The system can be paired with a hot water cylinder, enabling it to provide both space heating and domestic hot water from a single renewable heating solution. This makes it suitable as a complete home heating package and allows installers to offer homeowners an integrated system capable of meeting both heating and hot water requirements efficiently.

Q

What types of property has the new Activair R290 Indoor Heat Pump been designed for?

Q

Where do you envisage the unit being installed within a property?

The Activair R290 Indoor Heat One of the key advantages of Pump has been developed the Activair R290 is that it is specifically for homes where installed entirely indoors. installing a conventional Rather than requiring a outdoor heat pump can be separate outdoor unit, it Peter Beighton, Managing difficult, impractical or simply connects to outside air Director, Trianco undesirable. Q

Because the heat pump is located indoors, noise is likely to be a key consideration. How have you addressed this? Noise performance was a major focus throughout the development process. To minimise sound levels, the unit incorporates a fully enclosed compressor design, which significantly reduces operational noise. The Activair R290 achieves a sound pressure level of just 31dB(A) measured at one metre, making it exceptionally quiet in operation. We also offer a range of noise attenuation accessories that can further reduce audible noise, ensuring the system is suitable for a wide variety of installation scenarios.

Q

What is the weight of the 3.2kW wall-hung model?

The 3.2kW wall-mounted Activair R290 weighs 73kg. Despite its robust construction and integrated components, we've worked hard to maintain a practical form factor that simplifies handling and installation.

Q

What control options are available to homeowners and installers? Connectivity and ease of use are extremely important today, so all Trianco Activair High Temperature heat pumps can be controlled via a dedicated Smart App. The app gives homeowners convenient

access to their heating system, allowing them to monitor and adjust operation remotely. It also provides valuable information, including energy consumption data and system status information. In addition, every unit incorporates a built-in SIM card, enabling secure remote monitoring by Trianco. This allows our technical team to assist installers with

commissioning, identify and diagnose issues more quickly, and where necessary even make adjustments remotely on behalf of the installer or homeowner. This level of support can help reduce site visits and improve customer satisfaction.

Q

Are there any onboard diagnostic or safety features?

Yes, the Activair R290 includes a comprehensive range of diagnostic and safety features. Through the Smart App, users and installers can access power consumption data and system information codes, providing useful insight into the unit's operation. In addition, the integrated SIM connectivity enables remote diagnostics and support from Trianco's technical specialists. From a safety perspective, the unit incorporates both a gas separator and an R290 refrigerant leak detector. Should a refrigerant leak ever be detected, the system actively discharges the gas as part of its built-in safety strategy, providing additional reassurance for homeowners and installers alike.

Q

Can the Activair R290 be used for cooling as well as heating?

Yes, it can. When installed with compatible fan coil units rather than traditional radiators, the Activair R290 can provide cooling as well as heating.

Q

What do you see as the biggest benefit of an indoor heat pump solution? The biggest advantage is flexibility. By eliminating the need for an outdoor unit, we're opening up heat pump technology to a broader range of properties that may previously have been difficult to retrofit. The Activair R290 combines renewable heating, hot water capability, smart controls, remote monitoring and optional cooling in one compact package. For installers, it creates new opportunities in properties where conventional heat pumps may not have been viable, while for homeowners it offers an efficient, discreet and future-ready heating solution.

DOMESTIC HEATING

Dean Heathfield, Commercial Director at Talon Manufacturing, looks at how quick and easy pipework finishing details, from pipe seals to skirting covers, can help deliver a successful domestic heating installation.

FINISHINGTouches A

well-designed heating system can be technically excellent and still disappoint a homeowner if the finish lets it down. Customers might not recognise what is impacting their energy bills but they may notice a rough patch around a boiler flue or bare copper pipework against a wall. Many domestic heating installations involve a series of holes drilled for pipework, waste runs and boiler flues. Left unsealed, or even sealed with traditional mortar, expanding foam or silicone, these penetrations become a direct route for warm air to escape and cold air, moisture and pests to get in. None of those materials age particularly well either: mortar cracks, foam shrinks and discolours, silicone peels and achieving a neat finish externally or at height is not always straightforward. Sealing penetrations well is more than

good practice too, since the 2022 update to Part L made airtightness around pipe and flue penetrations a formal requirement rather than a recommendation.

Pipe collars Purpose-made pipe collars avoid all of this. PipeSnug, for instance, fits directly into a standard core-drilled hole around a pipe, forming an immediate airtight seal in seconds and comes in enough sizes and colours to disappear into most finishes. FlueSnug does the same job around a 152mm core-drilled flue hole and because it can be fitted from inside the property, there’s no need for ladders or scaffolding. The newer FS5 version is sized for five-inch flues and lines up with existing core holes on like-for-like boiler swaps, so there's no redrilling or making good required at all. The Snugs also preserve the wall itself and can be removed without damage if needed.

Clipped and tidy Hinge clips are one of the easiest places to cut corners but one of the quickest to detract from a job. Some clips can be brittle and break, lose their grip or visibly yellow, undermining work that's otherwise first-rate. When choosing hinge clips, the basics matter. A clip that grips a pipe through a full 360° spreads the load evenly rather than creating stress points that lead to sagging or rattling as the system heats and cools. Material quality counts too: UV stabilised plastics, used in Talon's Hinged Clips, resist the yellowing and brittleness that sunlight and temperature swings can cause. For longer runs, a linking system that keeps clips aligned without extra measuring, like Talon's interlocking Dovetail design, saves time and keeps spacing consistent along the whole length.

Colour Colour has a practical role in installations as well as an aesthetic one. Clips that come in red for hot, blue for cold and yellow for gas let installers, and anyone following behind them, identify a pipe run at a glance rather than tracing it back to source. On a busy job with several trades moving through a property, that can save real time and avoid costly mix-ups, while still leaving a tidier, more considered finish than a row of plain white clips.

Covering up Not every domestic job allows pipework to be chased into a wall or hidden under a floor, particularly in retrofit and refurbishment projects. Exposed copper can undo an otherwise tidy job too, especially around radiators and heated towel rails, where the customer has often chosen the surrounding finish carefully. Pipe covers that clip directly over existing pipework create a smooth finish without any painting. Talon’s uPVC Snappit pipe covers won’t chip or flake like paint and the kits for radiators and towel rails include matching collars as well as covers, so the last few inches of pipe don't get left bare. Skirting-level covers solve the same problem over longer surface-mounted runs, concealing pipework neatly along a wall or skirting board, indoors or out, while still allowing access when it's needed. A decent system should be easy to keep clean, resistant to the knocks of daily life and rated to UL94 V-0 for flame spread, with fixing brackets and inside, outside and flat corner pieces plus stop ends so a run looks continuous rather than stopping and starting at every corner. Talon’s over-skirting and direct-to-wall skirting covers can also connect directly into skirting systems, giving installers a continuous finish rather than a mix of exposed sections, awkward joins and visible clips. None of this is complicated or expensive and it needn't add much time to a job. But together, these details can be the difference between an installation that's merely compliant and one that looks like it too.

Final details Customers can't always judge pipe sizing or system design, but they can see a neat seal, a straight run of clips and a skirting line with no rough edges. Getting those details right is a small investment that pays off in a job that looks every bit as good as it performs. To view the Talon range please

DOMESTIC HEATING

CONTROL STRATEGY As heat pump installations continues to rise in the UK, Ian Little, UK Business Development Manager at Resideo, considers the opportunity for installers to explore heat pump control strategies that could help enhance system performance and comfort, and strengthen long-term customer relationships.

H

eat pumps are increasingly establishing themselves as part of the UK's low-carbon heating future, with DESNZ recording 51,000 retrofit heat pump installations in 2025. As highlighted in Resideo's white paper Practical Approaches to Controlling Heat Pumps, growing deployment of heat pumps is creating new opportunities for an increased focus on how systems are controlled and experienced by homeowners. As the market inevitably matures over time, the success of this transition may not be defined simply by the fitting of a heat pump, but how the overall system supports the comfort and user experience homeowners expect.

No one approach As the white paper highlights, there is no single control strategy that suits every property. The most appropriate approach depends on factors including property type, system design and homeowner expectations. Manufacturer-supplied controllers are typically used as the default solution, often managing the entire property through a single thermostat or control point. And, for many suitable homes, this approach can work well. However, as installers encounter a wider variety of property types and customer expectations, a one-size-fits-all control strategy may not always help optimise the outcome.

Different occupancy patterns, varied room usage, and changing lifestyle requirements all influence how homeowners want to heat their homes. If the controls cannot respond effectively to these needs, customers may perceive the system as underperforming - even when the heat pump itself is operating exactly as designed. Rather than viewing controls as simply an accessory, they should be considered a part of overall system design, bridging the gap between installation and the day-to-day user experience.

Understanding the different roles One of the clearest findings from the research is that there is no universal control solution. The most appropriate approach depends on the property, system design and homeowner requirements, and understanding the separate roles played by the heat pump controller and dedicated comfort controls comes into play. While comfort controls and zoning can help homeowners tailor heating around occupancy patterns and room usage, they should always be implemented in line with

024_PHPI_OCT26_Layout 1 04/09/2026 15:00 Page 25

manufacturer requirements and appropriate system design. As the white paper highlights, achieving the right balance between comfort, efficiency and system performance requires consideration of factors such as hydraulic design, minimum flow requirements and the specific characteristics of the property. The manufacturer's controller is responsible for managing the heat pump itself. It oversees critical functions such as flow temperature, weather compensation, and compressor modulation, ensuring the unit operates as efficiently and reliably as possible. Comfort controls perform a different function. Instead of determining how heat is produced, they manage how that heat is delivered throughout the home. Scheduling, temperature adjustment, zoning, and room-by-room control all sit within this layer, allowing homeowners to tailor heating around their daily routines and individual comfort preferences. Separating these responsibilities could help generate a more balanced system.

Resideo Academy has been developed to help installers build confidence in both heating controls and their application alongside heat pump systems The heat pump controller focuses on generating heat effectively, while comfort controls can help align heat demands with homeowner lifestyle patterns.

Supporting outcomes When correctly specified and configured, smart controls can support improved comfort and help reduce unnecessary energy usage. Yet these benefits are only realised when controls are specified, configured, and commissioned correctly. A deeper understanding of control strategies enables installers to specify

systems more accurately, commission them more effectively, and have more informed conversations with customers from the earliest stages of a project. Training is central to achieving this. Resideo Academy has been developed to help installers build confidence in both heating controls and their application alongside heat pump systems. Through instructor-led courses, online learning and the Resideo Academy app, professionals can access flexible training that fits around busy working schedules, supporting every stage from specification through to commissioning and customer handover. By putting control strategy at the heart of heat pump system design, installers can put themselves in a stronger position to support positive customer outcomes and long-term business growth. BUSINESS & TRAINING

Q& A

REDUCE THE ADMIN BURDEN

With business admin an issue for many installers, PHPI caught up with Benjamin Dyer, CEO and co-founder of of Powered Now, to find out some steps installers can take to reduce the burden.

Q

Business admin can be a significant part of running a small trades business, what is your take on the amount of time and energy it takes up? It's worse than most people outside the trade realise. Our NOW Report found tradespeople spend an average of five hours 20 minutes a week on admin, more than 277 hours a year, and nearly a third spend over seven hours a week on it. Almost two-thirds do this work in the evenings, and over 40% at weekends. That's not a minor inconvenience. That's a business owner's personal time getting eaten away by paperwork that has nothing to do with the trade they're actually good at. Nobody gets into heating and plumbing because they love invoicing. They get into it because they're good with their hands and take pride in a job

done properly. Admin is the tax you pay for running your own business, and right now that tax is too high.

Q

The NOW Report indicates that while 51% of business owners and self-employed tradespeople remain confident about the next 12 months, quoting remains an issue, 55% of respondents indicated they have definitely or probably lost jobs because quotes were sent too slowly. How does this impact a business and what can be done to help?

26 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

That statistic should worry every installer reading this. Only 4% get a quote out the same day, and more than a quarter take longer than three days. In that gap, the customer isn't waiting patiently. They're getting quotes from two or three other installers, and whoever answers first usually

wins the job, regardless of who'd have done the best work. Slow quoting doesn't just lose you the job in front of you. It loses you the relationship and any repeat work that would have come with it. The fix isn't working harder, it's removing the friction between finishing a site visit and getting a quote in front of the customer. Quote from your phone or tablet on site, with templates and pricing already set up, rather than waiting until you're back at a desk that evening. The businesses quoting within hours rather than days are the ones consistently winning the work.

Powered Now brings the whole job lifecycle into one place, from first enquiry through to tax return

026_PHPI_OCT26_Layout 1 04/09/2026 15:19 Page 27

Q

Another key takeaway from the report is that late payments remain an issue, with 67% experiencing customers delaying or disputing payments. How can installers ensure they are getting paid for completed work?

This is one of the most damaging findings in the whole report. Tradespeople are currently owed an average of £5,901 in unpaid invoices, and more than a quarter are owed over £10,000. Three in five have simply written off money because chasing it felt like too much hassle. That's money installers have earned, sitting unpaid, because the system for collecting it is too slow or too manual. Three things genuinely help. Invoice immediately, ideally the same day, from the van or on site, rather than waiting until you get round to it. Our research found invoicing speed and payment speed are almost identical, the quicker you invoice, the quicker you're paid. Be clear about payment terms upfront, before the job starts, not after. And use a system that chases automatically, reminders that go out without you having to make an awkward phone call. Most non-payment isn't malicious, it's customers deprioritising an invoice that isn't in front of them. Automated reminders solve a lot of that quietly.

Q

Where can installers find the NOW Report?

The full report is available now on the Powered Now website. Please www.rdr.link/pcd009. It covers quoting speed, payment behaviour, stress levels and the industry's outlook for the year ahead.

Q

How can Powered Now help installers remove some of the admin burden? Powered Now brings the whole job lifecycle into one place, from first enquiry through to tax return. Quoting, invoicing, scheduling, customer records, digital certificates and forms, supplier expenses and Making Tax Digital compliance all sit in

277

Slow quoting doesn't just lose you the job in front of you. It loses you the relationship and any repeat work that would have come with it one system rather than scattered across paper, spreadsheets and separate apps. It works across mobile, tablet and desktop, and works offline too, which matters when you're in a customer's basement with no signal. Do the admin once, on site, in minutes. Not later, at a desk, after a full day's work.

Q

The NOW Report found tradespeople spend an average of five hours 20 minutes a week on admin, more than 277 hours a year

In which other areas can Powered Now assist installers?

Team scheduling and GPS tracking for businesses running more than one engineer. Digital certification and compliance forms, so paperwork for gas or electrical work gets done properly first time. Full customer management, so job history, notes and previous quotes sit in one place instead of in someone's head or an old text thread.

Q

Powered Now has recently launched an AI Receptionist. How can this help installers? It answers calls when an installer can't, up a ladder, under a boiler, mid-job with no way to stop and pick up the phone. Instead of sending the caller to voicemail, where most people just hang up and ring the next name on the list, it has a proper conversation, asks the right questions for the job, and books the appointment straight into the diary. By the time the installer checks their phone, they're not chasing a vague missed call. They're looking at a job that's already confirmed. It's a direct response to one of the report's clearest findings, that the moment between a phone ringing and someone answering it is where a lot of work quietly disappears. B uil d ing CONFIDENCE

As heat pumps move into the mainstream, installers face growing expectations around quality, transparency and customer care. Harry Budd, Digital Marketing Director at Logic4training explores evolving consumer protections under the Warm Homes Plan and how installers can meet higher standards and build trust with consumers.

However, as the technology begins to spread to the mainstream, one of the most significant barriers is consumer confidence. improve consistency and raise confidence in the sector, rather than create unnecessary barriers. For installers who are new to heat pumps or not yet ready to commit to full MCS, there is still the option of working through an MCS umbrella scheme. Umbrella providers support installers with system design, compliance and certification, allowing them to gain experience, build a track record and develop the processes needed before progressing to direct certification.

Trusted advisor As the market moves beyond early adopters, installers will increasingly be working with homeowners who are less interested in the technology and more concerned by practical questions. How much will it cost? Will the house stay warm? Will it save money in the long term? For the first time, consumers have a choice about their heating system and they need honesty and transparency to help them make the decision.

Installers will need to communicate clearly and avoid jargon Installers will need to communicate clearly and avoid jargon, while providing reassurance and evidence that a heat pump is the right solution for their home. Schemes such as Nesta's Visit a Heat Pump allow prospective customers to see heat pumps operating in real homes and provide a valuable peer-to-peer perspective.

Investing in knowledge Of course, technical competence will remain essential, but the ability to build trust and deliver a positive customer experience will also be a key differentiator. Formal training and qualifications provide the technical foundation and when combined with ongoing professional development, helps installers stay current with changing standards, new products and best practice.

Manufacturer training is also a valuable knowledge stream for installers, providing free insight into specific systems and controls. Industry events and trade shows are another low-cost option, giving installers the chance to share experiences with peers and hear first-hand about the challenges and solutions emerging across the sector.

Building confidence Stronger consumer protections under the Warm Homes Plan, together with MCS's evolving standards, have the potential to rebuild trust in home energy improvements. By combining high-quality installations with clear advice, ongoing training and a strong focus on customer experience, installers can help overcome the barriers of uncertainty and position heat pumps as a trusted, mainstream heating solution.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

WINTER-PROOF YOUR

WORKWEAR As temperatures begin to drop, staying warm, dry and mobile on site becomes a daily challenge for engineers and installers alike. Carhartt explains how to layer up and choose the right clothes for the conditions.

P

lumbing and heating engineers bear the brunt of the cold weather more than most. Staying warm will obviously make you more comfortable, but comfort isn’t the only consideration; cold, stiff hands and numb fingers make for slower, less accurate work and a higher risk of injury. The good news is that modern workwear has moved a long way past piling on jumpers and hoping for the best.

Go for layers The most effective way to stay warm on site isn't always one thick coat. Several thinner layers will often work best as air trapped between layers acts as natural insulation

and if you start to overheat, removing a layer releases that warm air and cools you down again. It's a system that works with your body rather than against it. Everything starts with the base layer. Cotton might feel soft against the skin, but it holds onto moisture, so once you start sweating in a plant room or crawling around in a loft, a cotton t-shirt turns damp and cold fast. A synthetic fabric like polyester is a better bet: lightweight, quick-drying and effective at wicking sweat away from the skin. Carhartt's Force™ Series range, for example, uses FastDry™ technology to move moisture and includes anti-microbial properties to stop odours building up over a long shift. The mid-layer's job is to trap the warmth the base layer lets through, without adding bulk or restricting movement. Fleece and flannel both do this well: fleece stays warm even if it gets damp, while flannel offers a softer, more breathable option. Stretch fabrics such as Carhartt's Rugged Flex™ build give into the fabric itself so a mid-layer moves with you rather than fighting you.

The mid-layer's job is to trap the warmth the base layer lets through, without adding bulk or restricting movement 30 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

030_PHPI_OCT26_Layout 1 04/09/2026 16:54 Page 31

The outer layer takes the brunt of wind, rain and cold, so it needs to be tough as well as weatherproof. Canvas and ripstop nylon are both strong options, but you also need to consider waterproofing. Carhartt's Rain Defender™ helps light rain bead and run off, while Storm Defender™ adds a fully waterproof, breathable membrane for heavier or more prolonged exposure, so you stay dry from the weather without getting clammy from your own body heat.

Getting warmth right Not every winter jacket needs to do the same job and it's worth thinking about outerwear as sitting somewhere on a scale, from a light layer for a chilly morning through to serious protection for the depths of winter, rather than reaching for the heaviest coat you own every time the temperature dips. For a first line of defence against the cold, look for a lightweight jacket in duck canvas or denim, ideally with a soft blanket lining. These styles aren't heavily insulated, but they're perfect for a cool morning, a late finish or worn as an extra layer over other kit when needed. The Iconic Detroit Jacket is a good example: a cotton duck jacket with a warm blanket-lined body and quilted nylon sleeves, built to be a first line of defence rather than full winter armour. Once the cold is setting in regularly and you need a warmer outer layer, sherpa lining is what to look for. The soft, fleece-like pile

traps warm air against the body than a standard blanket lining, so it delivers a noticeable step up in warmth without much extra bulk. The Washed Duck Bartlett Jacket and the women's Rockford Insulated Jacket both fit the bill here. For properly cold, exposed conditions, look beyond the lining to dedicated insulation. Fabrics like 3M™ Thinsulate™ trap warm air within thousands of tiny fibres rather than relying on bulk alone, so they add serious warmth without the weight of old-fashioned wadding. The Washed Duck Active Jac uses heavyweight 12-ounce washed duck with a quilted nylon lining and 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation, along with Cordura®-reinforced cuffs for durability, while the women's Iconic Washed Duck Sierra Jacket brings the same tough, washed duck canvas together with a sherpa-lined body and hood for warmth without sacrificing mobility. At the extreme end, for sub-zero mornings, exposed sites and long hours outdoors, look for jackets that combine several forms of protection at once: heavyweight synthetic-down or featherless insulation, a sherpa-lined hood and upper body and technology that blocks the wind as well as trapping heat. The Montana

The outer layer takes the brunt of wind, rain and cold, so it needs to be tough as well as weatherproof Loose Fit Insulated Jacket ticks every box, combining synthetic down insulation with a sherpa-lined upper body and hood, plus Wind Fighter™ and Rain Defender™ technologies, for all-day cold protection. Thinking about outerwear this way, working out roughly how cold and how exposed a job is likely to be, makes it much easier to choose the right jacket, rather than defaulting to the heaviest one in the cupboard.

Kneepads, boots and more... It's worth applying the same thinking to the rest of the kit too: kneepads for cold concrete and frozen floors, insulated boots with a decent grip for icy surfaces and gloves that still allow enough dexterity for fiddly connections all matter just as much as the coat on your back. Get the layering right underneath, the outer layer right on top and the details sorted everywhere else, and there's no reason winter should slow anyone down on site. hrough its Pipe Freeze solution, Arctic Hayes by DiversiTech UK has six decades of pipe freezing expertise. The company is now adding digital monitoring to Pipe Freeze via its new Smart Freeze Clamp. The company says the move represents, “a significant step forward from traditionally disruptive, costly and messy drain-down methods, combining the best in precision freeze technology with digital intelligence, via real-time app monitoring and ultrasonic sensing.” The new solution provides plumbing and heating engineers live feedback on what is happening inside the pipe as it freezes. app, connected via Bluetooth, the Smart Freeze Clamp provides real-time temperature monitoring, visual countdowns and alerts throughout the freeze cycle, allowing installers to see when an ice plug has formed and when it begins to thaw. This is made possible by an integrated ultrasonic sensor that confirms freeze formation by measuring the actual temperature of the pipe itself, rather than relying on estimated times or ambient conditions. The result, the company says, is a more accurate and repeatable process, eliminating the guesswork that can lead to premature cutting or failed freezes. The system provides audible and visual confirmation when a solid ice plug has been achieved, ensuring it is safe to begin work. It also alerts users if the freeze begins to weaken and additional refrigerant is required, helping to prevent any costly mistakes and unnecessary disruption.

The sealant used on a kitchen or bathroom job can make a big impact on the final result. Here, Stuart Ruffles, Product Marketing Assistant at Geocel, looks at what professionals need to consider when choosing these products.

Sea l OF APPROVAL K

itchen and bathroom projects remain among the most popular renovations for homeowners. While only a small part of a bathroom or kitchen job, the choice of sealant has a big impact on the finished result. Using an unsuitable or low-quality product can result in adhesion issues that are not only unsightly but lead to leaks and water damage if not addressed. It can also increase the likelihood of mould forming and allow bacteria to grow. All of this will have a significant impact on the customer’s satisfaction with the work overall, increase callbacks and even harm your reputation among potential new customers. When it comes to the choice of sealants for plumbing jobs there is no one-size-fits-all solution and there is an array of possibilities.

while only a small part of a bathroom or kitchen job, the choice of sealant has a big impact on the finished result 34 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Selecting a sealant

The first way to narrow down the options is to choose a product from a brand you know and trust. There is a reason why brands such as Geocel have been around for decades; generations of professionals have relied on their products every day. In the case of Geocel, customers also have the reassurance of ‘Powered by Dow’ on the packaging, with the knowledge that all these products benefit from premium grade silicone from Dow. It is also important to choose a product that is right for the application. It is worth having a multi-purpose silicone sealant in your kit for general sealing tasks. One that is waterproof and has mould resistant properties is ideal. A good quality multi-purpose silicone sealant can be the ideal all-rounder, generally available in a variety of colours too. If opting for a general-purpose product, ensure that it still has the performance characteristics you need – waterproof, flexibility and anti-mould are three of the key ones.

Specially formulated However, for kitchen and bathrooms, it is generally advisable to go with a sanitary silicone product as these will have been

034_PHPI_OCT26_Layout 1 07/09/2026 09:43 Page 35

formulated specifically for the demands of the environment. Among the key features to look for is excellent unprimed adhesion to a range of non-porous surfaces, such as tiles, basins, sinks, toilets, showers and kitchen worktops. High flexibility is also essential. Fixtures such as baths and shower screens will be subject to movement with use, as well as a degree of expansion and contraction with changes in temperature. Without flexibility the sealant will be susceptible to cracking and loss of adhesion.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD Peter Lawson, Brand Manager at Overland Shoes, explores the latest innovations in safety footwear and why they can make all the difference to the day-to-day working lives of busy plumbers.

M

ost people have probably seen first-hand the technology-driven transformation taking place across the footwear market. Whether you’re buying a new pair of shoes or trainers, innovations such as adaptive cushioning, wellness-focused design, energy-return foams and personalised fits are becoming increasingly commonplace. The impact goes far beyond aesthetics, with these advances delivering tangible benefits including enhanced comfort, improved performance and greater customisation. Why then, you may ask, should the safety footwear category be any different? The answer is simple – it

Today’s safety footwear has moved well beyond the clunky, chunky boots of the past

footwear starts with considering the challenges you face day to day and the type of protection you need. In the Bobcat Safety Footwear range, for example, each series has been designed with specific trade applications in mind. If you’re often working at height, the Forge series delivers precision Peter Lawson, Brand Manager at Overland Shoes performance with ladder grip technology to help provide Are you regularly climbing ladders or stability when working from ladders. If your working on wet or slippery surfaces? Do work takes you between indoor and you tend to carry heavy materials or move outdoor environments, the Rapid and between indoor and outdoor jobs? Toledo series offer the versatility you need. Today’s safety footwear market is For tougher conditions, the Keystone jam-packed with a host of features and series provides heat-resistant protection, benefits tailored to the diverse while the Bastion series delivers environments and hazards modern heavy-duty protection for the most tradespeople face. Whether you’re a demanding applications. In this way, the domestic or commercial plumber or right fit should always start with matching installer, this means choosing the right the shoe to the job. shouldn’t. The good news is the safety footwear category is experiencing a wave of innovation across comfort, wearability and design, giving busy workers options that work as hard as they do. So, what should you look for when stepping up your safety footwear game?

1 I Bigger Benefits

2 I Comfort is King

As comfort-first brands continue to raise the bar in the wider footwear market, it was only a matter of time before the same level of all-day wearability was expected from the workwear category. The good news? The industry has responded with huge advances in comfort technology designed to last, protect and ensure wearability, shift after shift. Key features to look out for include lightweight materials, flexible soles and ergonomic footbeds that support all-day wear without compromise. Some more advanced safety footwear ranges, while still available at a mid-market price point, even include advanced technologies that have been proven to reduce strain on joints, tendons and the risk of plantar fasciitis, a condition all too common among tradespeople who spend hours on unforgiving surfaces.

The upshot is not just all-day wearability, even for the longest workdays, but better posture, alignment and reduced injury risk with every step.

3 I Female Fit

Women are one of the fastest-growing demographics in plumbing and installation. It is also well documented that attracting more females into the sector is critical to bridging the skills gap and safeguarding the future workforce. It may appear surprising then that historically women’s safety footwear has followed an approach that has overlooked the stark anatomical differences between men’s and women’s feet – leaving female workers with inadequate, poorly fitting options. That’s changing with leading manufacturers stepping up with women-specific designs built around female foot shapes – not simply scaled-down men’s styles. Bobcat Safety Footwear’s women’s collection, for example, uses anatomically correct, gender-specific lasts across five equally stylish application-specific designs, combining jobsite-ready protection with comfort and style.

4 I Distinctive Design

Remember the days when you’d swap your safety shoes before heading out after work because they were, well, less than easy on the eye? Not anymore. Today’s safety footwear has moved well beyond the clunky, chunky boots of the past, with streamlined silhouettes, edgy detailing and contemporary colourways — including popular neutral tones – that are just as stylish as mainstream footwear. Many collections also feature popular styles, from trainer-inspired designs to hiker-style boots, that look just as at home off site as they do on it. For more information please

WAVIN OSMA HEPvO Waterless trap On a project where two unvented cylinders are being installed, Jay uses the waterless trap from Wavin OSMA as part of the discharge pipework. Explaining how the product can be used Jay notes: “Okay, so what is in the box? You get the waterless trap and you also get the adapter to go onto an unvented cylinder. If you've got a really long run to get your discharge out from your cylinder, but you've got a bathroom or a waste nearby, you can run that discharge from the cylinder through this trap. And because it's got the membrane inside, you don't get any smells coming back up from the drain, because obviously the other side of here will have a tundish.” Commenting on the compact and versatile nature of the trap, Jay notes: “it's nice and slim line. It can fit in a vanity unit or under a bath.“ To watch the video… www.rdr.link/pcd018

Jay finishes up the installation by highlighting some of the standards which the Waterless Trap from Wavin OSMA meets: He says, “It's got a 15-year guarantee. NOVOPRESS ACO103 PRESS TOOL

In this video on the PHPI YouTube channel, Jay from J.W Watters Plumbing & Heating, reviews the ACO 103 Press Tool from Novopress, putting the tool through its paces on a new-build project.

W

ith many installers now using press systems on a regular basis, Jay takes a look at the ACO 103 Press Tool from Novopress. He runs through the components of the kit, which along with tool includes jaws in different sizes, batteries and a charger. Exploring the versatility of the press tool Jay notes: “As you can see, the head will rotate 180°. So, if you can't get it into a certain situation or a scenario, you can move the head all the way round. To fit the jaws, you take the pin out. You place the jaws in like that, and put the pin in. That's how quick it is.” Using the additional angled jaws available from Novopress creates the ability to press in tight spaces. Jay describes one of the main advantages of using a press system noting: “The advantage of using press to solder is the speed. We can be a lot quicker on our installation and it is also a lot cleaner because we're not using any solder or flux.” Jay then uses both 28mm jaws and the 35mm jaws to show how straightforward pressing can be. Jay says: “And just like

that, I know all of those fittings are pressed. Just think if you were soldering, how long would that take you to do that?”

App support The Novopress ACO 103 comes with an App that users can install, which includes functions like a log book and tool maintenance. Jay explains: “And one of the key features is the log book. So, we can go into this and we can have a look to see the performance of the press gun. And, as you can see, it's performed the press adequately. It gives you all key dates about

44 OCTOBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

when the cycles have been, and timed. You can also use the tool check feature to stay on top of the maintenance, so you know your gun's ready to use and calibrated. Just a really handy little app to go alongside a press gun.” Jay concludes: “It's eliminated a lot of soldering in my work. You can use this gun under a bath. You can use it under the floorboards with the angled jaws. So, it's actually sped up my installation time.” To watch the video please www.rdr.link/pcd025

LIGHT

TIME

Effectively illuminated workspaces can help installers complete tasks efficiently and accurately. PHPI finds out about some of Makita’s latest options.

M

akita has expanded its cordless lighting range with the 40VMax XGT® ML013G and 18V DML819 LXT Magnetic Work Lights. These lights can be attached and fixed to metal surfaces and have been designed to enhance visibility, productivity and jobsite flexibility. According to the company, the cordless work lights both deliver a maximum luminous flux of 1200 lumens to provide high visibility for maintenance tasks and demanding worksite environments. The lights offer varying runtimes depending on the battery capacity used. When selecting the 4.0Ah 40V Max battery on the ML013G, the run times offer 12 hours of power on the high setting, 18 hours on medium and 29 hours on low. When selecting the 6.0Ah 18V battery on the DML819, this delivers nine hours of continuous operation on high, 14 hours on medium and 22 hours on low. Both lights provide a warning when the battery is running low, indicated by a reduction in illuminance.

Reduced glare Both Makita work lights are equipped with a LED head with a diffusing lens to soften

the output, reduce glare and provide widespread illumination. The LED head also rotates 300º horizontally (90º right and 210º left) and 180º vertically, which the company says makes it both practical and flexible for awkward work areas. When not in use, this can be folded down, resulting in the automatic shutdown of the work light to reduce its overall size.

Memory function The work lights join Makita’s new DML817 - a compact LED light which features three lighting modes, as well as a memory function, so users can pick up work from where they

left off. The DML817 has been designed for a variety of uses including a stationary light and handy portable hanging light. It also features a USB lighting port, to double up as a portable power bank.

Convenience Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK, commented: “All new work light additions deliver powerful illumination, impressive runtimes and versatility. They also offer ultimate convenience as they can be moved around easily in the workspace, helping users to stay productive, safe and efficient from the start of the job through to completion.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pcd026

NEW POLL TOWEL RAIL FROM THE RADIATOR COMPANY

DAB PUMPS INTRODUCES EVOSTA 3 RANGE EVOSTA 3 is the latest circulator range from DAB Pumps. The company says it has been developed “to give installers a high-quality, efficient pump that is straightforward for them to fit, set up and leave working with confidence.” Building on previous generations of EVOSTA models, the company says EVOSTA 3 brings together improved functionality and ease of use with the manufacturing quality and pump expertise associated with DAB Pumps. EVOSTA 3 uses electronic control and a permanent magnet motor to enable the circulator to respond efficiently to system demand, helping avoid unnecessary energy consumption. Rather than simply running at one fixed output, EVOSTA 3 can be configured to provide the performance required by different heating installations. DAB Pumps has also sought to reduce complexity. It features a clear user interface designed to provide straightforward access to settings and operating information, helping make commissioning quick and intuitive. The company says EVOSTA 3's compact design makes it suitable for installations where available space is restricted, while attention has been paid to simplifying electrical connection and set-up. An automatic degassing function provides another useful feature during commissioning. The dedicated function helps remove air from the circulator, giving installers another practical tool for getting the system running correctly before leaving site. For more information please

The towel rail features 30mm square collectors and evenly spaced 22mm round cross tubes. It is certified to BS EN442 and comes with a ten-year guarantee. Richard Lister, National Sales Manager at IRSAP commented: “We are excited to introduce the new Poll towel rail to our range, as it brings together high-performance heating with refined specification led design. VILLEROY & BOCH ECORA SHOWER TRAY

WERNER ENHANCES TELESCOPIC TOWER Werner has announced the launch of a re-engineered Telescopic Tower. The company says the upgraded design offers greater versatility and now features integrated rung bumpers, helping to prevent fingers from becoming trapped during assembly and adjustment. Dave Elson, Werner’s Compliance Manager, said: “As a business, we continually review our products to identify opportunities for improvement. The Werner Telescopic Tower is a popular choice among trade professionals, and these latest refinements make it even safer and easier to use. “The integrated rung bumpers create additional spacing between the rungs, helping to reduce the risk of pinched fingers during set-up. While seemingly minor, finger injuries can be painful and disruptive, so this enhancement provides an important additional safety benefit. “The tower can be erected by one person in as little as three minutes and is available in five platform heights: 1.1m, 1.3m, 1.55m, 1.75m and 2.0m. Designed for quick and simple assembly, it can be adjusted to provide a working height of up to four metres. “Portability is another major advantage. The tower folds down into a compact size, making it easy to transport and store, even in smaller vans.” For more information please

A new shower tray has been introduced by Villeroy & Boch. The new Ecora shower tray is made from the PureBase composite material which is made from recycled granulated marble, calcium carbonate and reclaimed production surplus. The company says the range contains around 45% less resin than conventional acrylic shower trays and is completely fibreglass-free. Residue from production process is crushed and used as a filling agent in new shower trays – a closed circuit that reduces material consumption. At the end of its service life, the company says Ecora can be completely recycled and used as a high-quality secondary raw material in applications such as road building and the construction of high-rise buildings. Ecora features a rimless design and a 35mm profile. An oval outlet cover is flush with the surface in the same colour as the shower tray. It has a drainage rate of around 48 litres per minute. For additional flexibility, there are three installation options: flush-fitting in the floor, slightly raised on tiles or as a deliberately raised feature. For more information please
