Trusted tools
phpi@hamerville.co.uk
Without a varied collection of reliable tools available to hand when needed, plumbers and heating engineers may struggle to fix customer problems and fit the required products during a job. From pliers to pipe benders, installers rely on the tools in their work bag – alongside training and experience – to undertake heating and plumbing jobs day-in, day-out.
Whilst many installers will have a selection of tried and tested tools, most manufacturers are continually enhancing ranges and developing new solutions to aid accuracy, reliability and enhance efficiency. Comfort is another factor considered by many tool manufacturers: with installers using their hands continually, how a tool feels in the hand is important.
Unfortunately, tool theft is an issue most installers will be all too aware of. Remaining vigilant and keeping trusted tools secure is paramount: their loss can lead to disruption to work and have a heavy financial impact – not to mention the anguish any loss can cause, alongside the amount of time it can take to arrange replacements.
Maintaining tools in good working condition is another issue to consider. It is unlikely that a worn out or rusty tool will do good job.
A recent survey by WD-40®hasrevealed the impact that rusted, seized and poorly maintained components have on productivity across the construction and trade sectors. Although focused on components and not tools, its results help to highlight the value in keeping equipment in good condition. The research showed that just over half of tradespeople (51%) say stuck or rusted parts are one of the most common causes of delays on site.
However, the research also highlighted a culture of preventative maintenance among tradespeople, with 87% stating they carry out maintenance such as lubricating parts, cleaning equipment, or protecting components either regularly or occasionally. You can find out more on page 7.
Of course, from time-to-time replacements will be required, which also allows professional plumbers and heating engineers the opportunity to invest in the latest technologies available. Taking time to research the features and benefits may well pay dividends over time.
To help, PHPI regularly features some of the latest tools and equipment available to professionals in the sector with in-depth Q&As with manufacturers to highlight key features and benefits.
Readily available to perform key tasks at a moment’s notice, trusted tools are a vital part of an installer’s inventory.

FMB WARNS HOMEOWNERS UNDERESTIMATE COST OF NEW BATHROOMS
New research carried out by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has found that 71% of homeowners expect their bathroom renovation to come in under £10,000. However, professionals are warning that skilled labour, quality fittings, plumbing complications and unforeseen structural issues can push the final bill far higher.
The FMB says the data exposes a widespread misconception that puts homeowners at risk: a quarter (26%) believe a full bathroom renovation can be done for under £5,000, while only 14% expect to pay £10,000-£15,000 and just 3% anticipate costs of £15,000 or more.
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said: “Bathroom renovations are one of the most common home improvement projects, but our research shows homeowners are walking into them with unrealistic expectations about both costs and timelines. The gap between what people think they’ll pay and what they actually need to budget is setting them up for disappointment –or worse, pushing them towards rogue traders offering unrealistic quotes and timelines.”
The findings come as the FMB intensifies its campaign for a statutory licensing scheme to help protect homeowners.

BUS UPLIFT FOR OIL & LPG HEATED PROPERTIES
The government has announced an increase to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant for properties heated by oil and LPG, taking the total grant to £9,000. It says that this move will help those households and small businesses in England and Wales most impacted by rising energy prices, particularly in rural areas, to electrify their heating and provide greater certainty over energy bills.
Heat Pump Association UK, Chief Executive, Charlotte Lee, said: “The Boiler Upgrade Scheme plays a vital role in supporting households and small businesses to adopt heat pumps. Many who rely on heating oil have faced significant price uncertainty in recent months and lack the protection of the energy price cap.
“The £1,500 uplift for oil users will make the transition to heat pumps more affordable, helping to shield families and small businesses from volatile fossil fuel costs in the years ahead.”
Paul Rose, CEO of OFTEC, and Ken Cronin, CEO, UKIFDA, commented:“We welcome the government’s recognition that off-grid households using heating oil face unique challenges and higher costs to transition to heat pumps. Increasing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to £9,000 is a positive step.
“However, the fact remains that, even with this additional funding, oil heated households still face a significant financial shortfall. The government’s own estimates put the switching cost at nearly £20,000. Most oil heated households simply do not have the disposable income available. Unfortunately, it will therefore often be wealthier households who will most benefit from this increase in grant funding.
“That’s not to say these households should remain on kerosene. Far from it, we want the government to support a wider range of low carbon technologies to ensure households have a choice that suits their current circumstances. Importantly, we need options that do not include the high upfront costs associated with heat pumps.
“Renewable liquid fuels, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), therefore need to be part of the mix.”
RENOVATE OR MOVE?
According to a new report, The Renovation Nation Report 2026, published by MyBuilder.com, more than a quarter of homeowners (26%) say the current financial climate is making them more likely to renovate rather than move.
It also found that 27% of homeowners say they are more likely to invest in home improvements in 2026.
Andy Simms, from MyBuilder.com, said: “The Renovation Nation Report is a fascinating snapshot of how UK homeowners are shifting their priorities to investing in their homes, rather than moving on. It also reveals that demand for skilled tradespeople is likely to be higher than ever, as more homeowners choose to renovate or extend, rather than move.”
IMPACT OF SEIZED OR RUSTED COMPONENTS REVEALED
A new survey of UK tradespeople has revealed the impact that rusted, seized and poorly maintained components are having on productivity across the construction and trade sectors, with nearly 6 in 10 (57%) encountering these issues at least weekly.
The research, commissioned by WD-40®, shows that over half of tradespeople (51%) say stuck or rusted parts are one of the most common causes of delays on site.
Cleaning and preparation work is also a major contributor to inefficiency, with 48% of respondents highlighting it as a regular cause of delays, alongside tools or equipment not working smoothly (46%).
The research also highlights a strong culture of preventative maintenance among tradespeople, with 87% stating they carry out maintenance such as lubricating parts, cleaning equipment, or protecting components either regularly or occasionally.

NEW POLL INDICATES INSTALLERS EXPECT LOW-CARBON HEATING TO BE GROWING REVENUE SOURCE
Heat pump installers and heating engineers across the UK expect low-carbon heating to become a growing source of revenue – with 1 in 4 (25%) anticipating that between a quarter and half of their income will come from low-carbon heating sources by winter, new polling from Nesta finds.
The survey of 200 gas heating engineers and heat pump installers, conducted by Censuswide in March, found that 70% of respondents expect heat pumps will deliver between 10% and 50% of their revenue by the winter.
Madeleine Gabriel, Nesta’s Director of Sustainable Future, said: “Low-carbon heating is becoming central to how heating engineers make a living, so we need to make it easier for them to get hands-on with the technology, build skills that pay and feel secure as demand grows. Our existing heating workforce will help to drive a low-carbon future in homes across the UK - but we have to ensure they are well equipped in order for this to happen.”
Heating engineers interested in a funded heat pump can find and register for a scheme that works for them at: startathome.org.uk. Nesta’s programme brings together companies across England, Scotland and Wales that help heating engineers fit a government-funded heat pump at home.
Through Start at Home, Nesta is providing up to £2 million in funding to companies that supply heat pumps for heating engineers to install in their own homes.
Vaillant has partnered with English Heritage to further the charity’s Sustainable Conservation goals and help upgrade the heating systems across a selection of the holiday cottages in its estate.
Installations of Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump systems have already been completed at Coastguards Cottage, a three-bedroom property on the island of Lindisfarne (pictured), and at Fort House, a two-bedroom cottage at St Mawes Castle in Cornwall. A further six properties within the English Heritage are scheduled to receive upgrades as part of the ongoing programme.
James Fowler, Marketing & Strategy Director at Vaillant, commented: “Working with English Heritage highlights how heat pump technology can play a central role in decarbonising properties. These projects at Lindisfarne and St Mawes show that with careful specification and system design, renewable heating can be integrated sensitively and effectively.
“Ease of control and reliability were critical factors. Holiday guests expect comfort without complication. The systems installed are designed to operate efficiently in the background, delivering dependable heating and hot water while helping English Heritage significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels. At the same time, guests gain first-hand experience of a low carbon technology that is increasingly relevant for homes across the UK.”

HEAT PUMPS DELIVER SUSTAINABLE HEATING AT CHESTER ZOO
Mitsubishi Electric air source heat pumps are now providing renewable heating to the zebra, ostrich, and roan antelope habitats at Chester Zoo’s ‘Heart of Africa’ zone, as part of its ongoing partnership to support the zoo’s decarbonisation journey.
The latest project involved the installation of two Mitsubishi Electric CAHV commercial heat pumps which help keep the habitat of the zebra, ostrich and roan antelope as warm as the African savannah. The heat pumps deliver 80kW of heat capacity to the building, with radiant panels heating each area, and providing the ideal temperature for each species, ranging from 18 to 24 degrees.
“We’re able to deliver different temperatures to different parts of the habitat to make sure that each animal has got the right environmental conditions to exactly match their needs,” explained Chris Newman, Net Zero Design Manager for Mitsubishi Electric. “Our partnership with the zoo is not just about decarbonising existing buildings on the estate, but also about making sure that any new buildings are also designed and built with sustainability in mind.”
Mitsubishi Electric has also supplied air source heat pumps, air conditioning and ventilation to The Square, the zoo’s conference and events venue. Additionally, six Ecodan air source heat pumps have been installed in the habitat for the endangered Eastern Black Rhino, with a further seven units fitted at the zoo’s purpose-built butterfly habitat.

PREPARING FOR THE summer
Lee Halstead, Technical Sales Engineer at RWC, explores some of the typical challenges installers encounter over the summer – and how they can prepare to tackle them.
For plumbing and heating professionals, the winter months are often considered to be the busiest of the year, with frozen pipes and heating troubles prompting frequent callouts from customers. But, with the summer months soon upon us, plumbers continue to be in high demand, ensuring plumbing systems are operating efficiently and reliably.
Longer, brighter and warmer days mean many people are spending more time outside. Barbeques shape the weekends, and garden maintenance jobs drive usage of appliances like hosepipes and sprinklers. Even inside the home, renovation projects pick up pace over the summer as homeowners capitalise on the longer days to get improvement jobs underway.
For installers, all of this can make for busy summer periods. Whether it’s outdoor or indoor jobs, one thing installers must keep in mind is efficiency. Water is a scarce resource and, as summers get warmer, water companies are under increased pressure to manage resources to fulfil the needs of every home. Often, this means regions become subject to supply restrictions such as hosepipe bans in order to manage consumption.
To support households to prioritise efficient water usage, installers can promote the efficient performance of plumbing systems and even maximise
Outdoor plumbing
As more time is spent outdoors during the summer months, outdoor plumbing systems come into greater focus. From garden taps through to sprinkler systems, keeping everything in check will help to maximise the efficiency of these systems and ensure everything is working as required.
Forward-thinking homeowners may have proactively readied their outdoor systems for the previous winter season, such as disconnecting sprinklers from the water supply, isolating outdoor plumbing and removing hoses. While these steps are typically sufficient to protect outdoor systems, natural wear and tear –particularly following extremely cold winters – can still take its toll.
Plumbers can support their customers by taking the opportunity to inspect outdoor systems and appliances – including the valves installed to them – for cracks and leaks, alongside checking the pressure to ensure efficient performance. As increased usage of outdoor systems increases the risk of backflow contamination, these checks are crucial to safety.
Additionally, advising customers to clean the heads of appliances such as sprinklers
will help to enhance performance and minimise water wastage – an important consideration during summer months when the majority of water suppliers have to manage supply and conserve volumes.
Managing leaks
Both inside and outside the property, conserving water wherever possible is essential, making the management of leaks essential. While strong systems and watertight connections are an essential part of protecting against leaks, technology also has a role to play. Systems such as the MultiSafe Leak Detector from Reliance Valves can support the early detection of leaks so that action can be taken swiftly to put them right.
By constantly measuring water flow rate, pressure, temperature and hardness, the MultiSafe system actively monitors water consumption within a property. A regular micro-leakage monitoring function even detects small changes, preventing smaller leaks from creating bigger challenges down the line. An in-built isolation valve can also shut off the water supply in the event of unusually high water usage. As well as conserving water, this feature can
The summer is an ideal time for the maintenance of plumbing systems to be carried out, often causing less disruption to customers
protect properties when a leak occurs, cutting off the supply to prevent further damage.
When paired with the Reliance Valves MultiSafe app, users can remotely control and modify the device’s detection control valve, as well as view statistics on their water usage, effectively putting them in control of their consumption.
While technology can support installers to deliver watertight systems that promote all round efficiency, it is just one part of the solution – alongside strengthened systems.
Futureproofing systems
The summer is an ideal time for the maintenance of plumbing systems to be carried out, often causing less disruption to customers – particularly with heating systems largely being out of action during the warmer months. Likewise, installers may find themselves carrying out more improvement works throughout the summer period, with homeowners typically choosing to get projects completed when the weather is more predictable and school holidays free up more time.
Whether it’s maintenance jobs or renovation projects, installers have an opportunity to deliver reliable systems that optimise performance and efficiency, including through the prevention of leaks. Here, push-fit pipes, valves and fittings can help installers to create strong systems, while also saving them time on the job by reducing complexity.
From plastic pipes and fittings through to valves that underpin system performance, push-fit technology ensures high quality every time a connection needs to be made. Removing the need for soldering, push-fit technology is engineered to provide reliable, leak-free connections – all without the need for tools. This makes installations quicker, as well as supporting professionals to work easily in tighter, hard-to-reach spaces.
Equipping installers with a range of solutions to deliver leak-proof systems, JG Speedfit brings together pipes, fittings and valves. Combining familiar push-fit technology with Twist & Lock® technology also means installers can maximise durability and performance without the need for specialised tools.
Whatever plumbing and heating challenges are encountered over the summer months, installers can lean on the expertise of JG Speedfit to maximise the potential of every job and deliver consistently high standards for customers.

George Knowles, Project Engineer at Zilmet, chats with PHPI about buffer vessels and the Zilmet Zil B.
QWhy can installers run into issues with a heat-pump system design, even when the heat pump itself is correctly specified?
Because the heat pump is only one part of the job. A system can still underperform if the water volume is too low, the flow rates between primary and secondary circuits are not well matched, or zoning and controls allow the heat pump to see unstable conditions.
In those cases, you can have the right heat pump on paper but the wrong system behaviour in practice. Industry guidance notes that where minimum volume cannot be maintained, hydraulic separation and sometimes additional volume are required to prevent short cycling and protect efficiency.
QWhat problem is a buffer vessel actually solving on an ASHP job?
At its simplest, it adds water volume and stabilises the system. On a heat-pump job, that matters because the unit needs a sensible volume of water in circuit and stable flow conditions, especially when demand is low or zones are closing down. ZIL-B is positioned specifically to maintain minimum volume, improve operating efficiency and reduce compressor short cycling.
QWhen does a buffer vessel earn its place, and when is it just being fitted by habit?
It earns its place when the system genuinely needs either extra water volume, hydraulic separation, or both. Typical examples are highly zoned systems, mixed emitters, systems where minimum volume cannot be guaranteed, or situations where
ZIL B BUFFER VESSEL
primary and secondary flow conditions are unlikely to stay stable.
It is less about following habit and more about whether the system design will behave properly without it. Guidance for zoned heat-pump systems is clear that where minimum volume cannot be maintained, hydraulic separation and sometimes a buffer tank are likely to be required.
ZIL-B is positioned specifically to maintain minimum volume, improve operating efficiency and reduce compressor short cycling
QZIL-B is described as both a buffer and a hydraulic separator. What does that mean in practice for the installer?
In practice, it means one vessel is doing two jobs. First, it stores additional water volume, which helps system stability and reduces short cycling. Second, it can provide hydraulic separation between the primary heat-pump circuit and the secondary heating circuit, so the heat pump can see the conditions it needs while the distribution side can do something different if required.
QHow does the wrong buffer setup show up on a live system?
Usually through poor system behaviour rather than one dramatic failure. You may see frequent compressor cycling, unstable temperatures, awkward control behaviour, flow mismatch, or a system that technically runs but never seems settled. If the system volume is too low or zoning keeps changing conditions, the heat pump can end up starting and stopping too often. Zilmet’s own positioning for ZIL-B is that it maintains minimum volume and reduces compressor short cycling, which is exactly why correct setup matters.
Q
How much does insulation on a buffer vessel really matter once the system is running?
It matters because any heat you lose from the vessel is heat you paid to generate. If the buffer is there to help stability and retain useful energy in the system, it makes little sense to then let that energy leak away unnecessarily. ZIL-B uses premium polyurethane insulation and is explicitly positioned around minimal heat loss and retained surplus energy, so insulation is not just a cosmetic feature. It is part of overall system efficiency.
QZIL-B is available in 25, 50, 80 and 100 litres. What should guide the choice between them?
The right size should be guided by the system, not by habit. The key considerations are the heat pump’s minimum volume requirement, the layout of the heating system, zoning, emitter volume,
flow conditions and whether the vessel is being used mainly for added volume, hydraulic separation, or both.
ZIL-B is available in 25, 50, 80 and 100 litres, so the sensible approach is to match the vessel to what the system actually needs rather than defaulting to the same size every time. 12L & 18L vessels are being added to the range
QWhy is short cycling such a problem on heat-pump systems, and how can the right buffer help prevent it?
Short cycling means the heat pump starts and stops too often instead of running in longer, steadier cycles. That is bad for
A correctly applied buffer helps by increasing the water volume in circuit and smoothing out conditions so the compressor is not constantly reacting to small swings in demand
efficiency, bad for stable operation and not what you want for longevity either. A correctly applied buffer helps by increasing the water volume in circuit and smoothing out conditions so the compressor is not constantly reacting to small swings in demand. Zilmet explicitly positions ZIL-B as reducing compressor short cycling and improving heat-pump efficiency.
Q How does a buffer vessel help when emitter volumes and heat-pump flow requirements are not naturally well matched?
That is one of the classic cases where a buffer earns its place. If the heat pump wants one set of flow conditions but the emitters and controls create another, a buffer with hydraulic separation can help decouple the two sides and maintain more stable operation. Industry guidance for zoned systems notes that hydraulic separation is often needed where minimum system volume has to be protected, and a buffer tank can provide both separation and extra volume in one component.
QWhat are the most common mistakes installers make when adding a buffer vessel to a heat-pump system?
The biggest mistake is fitting one without being clear what job it is meant to do. If it is there for extra volume, hydraulic separation, zoning support or control stability, the rest of the design needs to reflect that.
Other common mistakes are treating the buffer as a generic box rather than part of the system design, not thinking through flow relationships on the primary and secondary sides, and underestimating the importance of correct connections, venting, drainage and insulation. ZIL-B includes additional venting and drainage connections, an adjustable wall bracket on the smaller models, and a design specifically aimed at heat-pump efficiency and short-cycling reduction, so the product is meant to support good practice rather than compensate for poor design. Also our foot accessory lets you drain 100% of the buffer.

PRESS AHEAD
Manufacture of valves and fittings, Conex Bänninger, has been at the forefront of promoting the benefits of press-fit fittings for more than a decade. Lee Nicholas, National Key Account Manager, outlines why installers are moving over to press-fit technology.
Whilst there is clearly a place for brazing, there are various factors that have attracted so many installers to adopt press-fit. Newcomers can quickly learn this system in a single training session, whereas welding is a skill that can take longer in which to become proficient.
Using press-fit speeds up installation time – saving both time and money and requires less preparation time than hot-works, which needs the pipes to be dry, flux to be applied and, once the joints are heated, time allowed for them to cool.
From an aesthetic point of view, press-fit joints are uniform and reliable and can be installed in tighter spaces and within occupied buildings where hot-works could prove disruptive.
Health and safety
With ever tighter health and safety regulations, hot works is viewed as a fire risk, and its use is increasingly restricted in cities across the UK. Press-fit helps reduce on-site disruption – as its flame-free and doesn’t need gas bottles or consumables to be moved around. Press-fit can be used within public sector areas such as hospitals or airports, where flammable materials maybe stored.
Companies undertaking hot-works face higher insurance premiums, as well as additional costs for the purchase of such items like flux and gas bottles and incurring extra labour costs for post fire watch activity.
In summary, press-fit is a clean, fast and efficient way of joining pipes and, being flame-free, can be safely used and suitable for many applications.

GEBERIT DUOFIX
PHPI catches up with Sonia De Gioia, Sales Director (Showrooms) at Geberit, to discover more about the company’s Duofix solution.
QWhat applications has Geberit Duofix been designed for?
Geberit Duofix has been designed as a flexible installation system that supports a wide range of bathroom applications. While it’s most commonly used for wall-hung WCs, it can also be used for washbasins, bidets and urinals and more, making it a complete solution for modern bathroom design.
It’s suitable for both residential and commercial settings, from private homes through to hotels, healthcare and public washrooms. As it’s a modular system, installers can use it across multiple projects and applications with confidence, knowing they’re working with a consistent and reliable solution.
Q
What are the key features of the solution?
At the core of Duofix is a robust steel frame, designed for long-term durability once installed behind the wall. It’s
combined with our integrated concealed cistern, which is factory-tested to ensure reliability and consistent performance.
We’ve focused on making the system as installer-friendly as possible, with adjustable height and depth, clearly marked fixing points and components that fit together easily. Acoustic performance is also a key consideration, helping to reduce noise transfer, which is particularly important in multi-occupancy buildings.
Duofix works seamlessly with a wide range of Geberit products, including our ceramics and flush plates, giving complete flexibility from both a design and installation perspective.
QCan Duofix be used with various wall constructions?
Yes, and that flexibility is one of the key strengths of the system. Duofix works easily with drywall and stud wall
installations, but it can also be installed in front of solid walls or as part of a pre-wall construction.
This allows installers to adapt the system depending on the structure they’re working with and the overall bathroom layout. Whether it’s a full-height installation, part-height wall or something more bespoke, Duofix integrates easily without adding unnecessary complexity.
QWhat type of WCs can be used with the system?
Duofix is compatible with all standard wall-hung WCs that meet common fixing standards, which gives complete freedom when it comes to ceramic choice.
That includes our own ranges, such as Geberit Acanto WC and Geberit ONE WC,
both of which feature our Geberit TurboFlush technology.
TurboFlush is designed to deliver a powerful, precise flush that cleans the pan thoroughly while keeping noise to a minimum. When combined with a Duofix frame and concealed cistern, it creates a high-performance, hygienic and very quiet WC solution.
Our concealed cisterns feature dual-flush technology as standard, allowing users to select between a reduced and full flush
QAre there any features that allow for simplified installation?
Making installation quicker and more straightforward is a big focus for us. Duofix frames come pre-assembled, which reduces time on site and helps installers work more efficiently.
We’ve included features like adjustable feet, clear fixing points and simple alignment options so the frame can be positioned quickly and accurately. The system is designed to minimise the need for complex adjustments, helping reduce the risk of errors or rework.

SHOWER DRAINAGE
explains how to install appropriate shower drainage when gravity isn’t enough.
Level access showers and wet room-style installs are now a regular part of the job, whether it’s a refurb, extension, or adaptation. The finish might look straightforward, but behind it sits one of the most important elements of the install: drainage.
Limited floor depth, solid floors, awkward layouts or long pipe runs can all make achieving the correct fall difficult, if not impossible. That’s where a pumped solution becomes essential. But selecting the right one is what keeps a job running smoothly and avoids the dreaded callback.
Flow rate handling
The first thing to look at is flow rate handling. Electric and mixer showers deliver very different outputs, so the pump needs to cope with both without constant adjustment. A system that can automatically respond to changing flow will outperform one that relies on manual setup.
Triggering and response time are just as important. A pump that reacts instantly to water flow helps prevent water build-up in the tray, particularly important in level access installations where there’s no margin for error.
Installation flexibility
This can make or break the job on site. Compact units, multiple inlet/outlet options, and the ability to work within tight voids all help reduce installation time and headaches.
Don’t overlook access for maintenance either. If you can’t get to it easily, it becomes a problem later, for you or someone else.
And finally, noise levels. In domestic settings especially, a quieter system can make a noticeable difference to the end user.
Pump performance
Solutions from Whale are designed with these challenges in mind. The Instant Match Premium range automatically adjusts pump performance to suit the incoming flow, removing the need for manual calibration and helping ensure consistent drainage across both electric and mixer showers.
Paired with Whale Sense, a smart wireless flow sensor, the system can also detect loss of pump performance or power and automatically shut off the water supply. It’s a simple but effective safeguard that helps prevent overflow and protects both the property and your workmanship.
Get the specification right from the start,
TIPS FOR SPECIFYING SHOWER DRAINAGE PUMPS
✔ Match the pump to the shower type – Don’t assume one setting fits all
✔ Prioritise automatic operation – Less setup, fewer issues later
✔ Check installation space early –Measure twice, avoid surprises
✔ Plan access – If it can’t be reached, it can’t be serviced
✔ Consider noise – Especially in flats or family homes
✔ Build in safety – Shut-off protection is becoming a must-have
and everything else falls into place. When gravity won’t cooperate, the right pumped solution keeps the job simple — delivering reliable drainage, a clean finish, and confidence that once you’ve left site, it stays sorted.

Joanne Mailen, Product Lead at Wetwall™, explains how wall panel systems offer an alternative to traditional tiling and can support installers in growing and protecting their businesses.
Advances in paneling technology mean today’s systems are available in large-format, grout-free designs, with installer-friendly features such as rapid-fit tongue and groove joints and post-formed edges. This allows for a clean, professional finish without the need for additional trims.
The outcome is a streamlined fitting process that significantly reduces time on site. For homeowners, this means minimal disruption and faster project completion. For installers, it delivers improved customer satisfaction while creating capacity to take on more work and increase overall turnover.
Fitting process
One of the key strengths of wall panels is their efficiency-focused design. They simplify the fitting process, so additional training or specialist expertise isn’t required. This makes them a practical option for sole traders and smaller teams. With fewer variables to manage, the risk of errors is reduced, and project costs are easier to predict.
By fitting seamlessly into existing workflows, wall panels allow installers to maintain consistent working practices while benefiting from leaner material use and better control over labour costs.
Panels can be installed using everyday tools, removing the need for specialist equipment or additional training and making the switch simple, familiar and low-risk. The result is a dependable, cost-effective solution that supports margins without
FASTER FITS
compromising quality or finish.
Low maintenance
For homeowners and property managers alike, long-term performance is increasingly influential when specifying bathroom materials. Many are seeking a true ‘fit-and-forget’ solution that will withstand daily use without demanding ongoing maintenance or remedial work. Durability has therefore become a critical factor, and one installers must address clearly when advising customers.
Wall panels provide a strong point for this discussion. They are durable and moisture resistant, with a construction well suited to the demands of bathroom environments, where constant humidity can put finished surfaces under strain. Their seamless design eliminates grout lines that can crack, stain or
discolour over time, helping them maintain their appearance for longer.
Maintenance is refreshingly simple as a result. A wipe with a cloth and mild detergent is usually all that is required to keep surfaces clean and presentable.
For installers, these long-term benefits translate into fewer callbacks and reduced aftercare demands. Reliable performance helps build customer confidence and strengthens professional reputation, while the ability to deliver a robust, hygienic and low-maintenance solution supports repeat business.
Versatility of design
Wall panels are no longer chosen solely for their practicality. Today’s systems offer a wide and continually expanding range of decors, allowing installers to guide customers through design decisions with greater confidence. From warm, wood-inspired finishes to bold colours and striking patterns, panels make it easier to reflect individual tastes while achieving a cohesive overall scheme.
Large-format designs unlock aesthetic possibilities that are difficult to achieve with traditional tiles. Premium effects such as marble, quartz, onyx and natural wood are now accessible at a more manageable cost, thanks to advances in surface
One of the key strengths of wall panels is their efficiency-focused design
technology and design realism. Alongside these, contemporary colour palettes and textured stone finishes offer genuine design choice without adding unnecessary complexity.
Panel systems have also evolved in how they’re constructed. Options are now available that don’t require trims, allowing the design to flow uninterrupted for a more seamless, high-end look. For homeowners, this creates a showstopping finish; for installers, it removes the need to buy and fit trims, speeding up installation with simple tongue-and-groove joints.
Panels are equally versatile in how they can be used. Beyond shower enclosures and bath surrounds, they can be installed horizontally as bath panels, used as half-height wall finishes, or specified as coordinating splashbacks. This flexibility allows installers to recommend design-led solutions that bring visual continuity to the entire bathroom, rather than treating wall finishes as a stand-alone element.
Breadth of choice
For installers, this breadth of choice creates an opportunity to add value through expertise and guidance. By helping customers refine their options and develop a balanced design, installers can deliver a more tailored result while reinforcing their position as trusted professionals. In a competitive market, this combination of design confidence and reliable performance can be decisive when securing new work.
Wall panel systems strike a balance between style and practicality, enabling installers to meet aesthetic expectations while keeping costs and timelines firmly under control. Brands such as Wetwall™ have responded to these priorities with collections that are visually appealing, waterproof, durable and straightforward to install. By adopting versatile, design-led panel solutions, installers can differentiate their offering, enhance customer satisfaction and boost business margins, delivering bathrooms that look as good as they perform.

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
TAKE CONTROL
As expectations around heating system performance continue to rise, the role of effective controls has come into sharper focus. Merlin Millner, Product Owner for Water-based Systems at Drayton, explores how control packs are helping installers simplify specification and installation, while also improving the way heating systems are explained and handed over to customers.
Heating systems sit at the heart of system performance but remain one of the least understood elements for homeowners. Alongside this, we are seeing regulatory expectations continue to increase, placing greater focus on zoning, time control and overall system efficiency. For installers, this creates the needs for a balancing act. Systems must meet compliance requirements and perform as intended, but they also need to be delivered in a way that is straightforward to install and easy for the end user to understand. Increasingly, installers are turning to control packs as a solution that addresses both challenges.
By bringing together the core components of a heating control system into a single, pre-configured solution, control packs provide a more structured approach to specification and installation, while also supporting clearer communication at handover.
A complete system
Specifying heating controls component by component offers flexibility, but it also poses risks around variability and interoperability. This means that compatibility between programmers, thermostats, motorised valves and wiring centres must be considered on every job,
with even small inconsistencies leading to issues during commissioning.
Control packs remove much of this uncertainty. Each pack is designed as a complete system, with components selected to work together in defined applications. For installers, this creates a more consistent starting point and reduces the likelihood of mismatched parts and the need for on-site adjustments.
That’s why Drayton have developed control pack for common system configurations, which allow installers to select solutions that align with typical domestic heating layouts. This supports a more standardised approach across multiple projects, which can improve efficiency over time.
Supporting compliance
The introduction of heating controls specific amendments to Part L regulations in 2022 further reinforced the importance of heating controls. Requirements around zoning and time scheduling are now well established, but delivering them consistently across different properties can still present challenges.
Control packs provide a practical route to compliance by incorporating the key elements required for modern system design. Rather than assembling these
elements individually, installers can work from a solution that already reflects current regulatory expectations.
This approach reduces the risk of omission and simplifies the specification process, particularly in projects where similar systems are being installed repeatedly.
Installation efficiency
In today’s busy working environment, time on site remains one of the most critical metrics for installers. The more streamlined the installation process, the easier it is to maintain programme timelines and protect margins.
With control packs, procurement is simplified and installation becomes uniform. There is no longer a need to coordinate multiple components from different sources or resolve compatibility questions during the job, because the system has effectively been pre-engineered.
Of course, this does not eliminate the need for technical expertise. Instead, it is more important than ever for that expertise to be applied more efficiently. Installers can focus on correct installation and commissioning, as opposed to system assembly; ultimately helping improve their efficiency.
Streamlining handover
One of the ongoing challenges with heating controls is ensuring that homeowners understand how to use them effectively. Poor understanding often leads to inefficient operation and, in some cases, unnecessary call-backs.
Control packs support a more structured handover process. Because the system is defined and consistent, it is easier to explain how it operates as a whole. Installers are not required to describe a collection of individual components, but can instead present a single, integrated control solution.
This helps shift the discussion towards outcomes. Rather than focusing on technical detail, the conversation can centre on how the system manages heating and hot water, how zoning works in practice, and how this contributes to enhanced comfort and efficient energy usage.
Effective control
With global uncertainty showing no sign of abating, energy costs look set to remain a primary concern for homeowners for the foreseeable future.
This makes the role of heating controls in managing consumption more prominent than ever before. Control packs provide a clear platform for demonstrating this value.
Each pack is designed as a complete system, with components selected to work together in defined applications
Zoned control, in particular, allows heat to be directed only where it is required, supporting more efficient system operation. When explained effectively, this can help homeowners understand the link between control and running costs.
For installers, this creates an opportunity to position controls as an integral part of system performance, rather than merely a secondary consideration.
Reducing call-backs
A proportion of post-installation issues relate not to system faults, but to how controls are used. Inconsistent setups or unclear explanations can lead to confusion, which in turn results in return visits.
By standardising both the components and the way they are presented, control packs can help reduce this risk. Installers are working with familiar configurations, and homeowners receive a clearer
explanation of how their system operates. Ultimately, this consistency can contribute to fewer avoidable call-backs and more efficient aftercare.
A solid foundation
As heating systems continue to evolve, particularly with the increasing focus on low-carbon technologies, the importance of effective control will only grow.
Control packs provide a reliable foundation by ensuring that core control functions are correctly implemented from the outset. This creates a platform that can support both current system requirements and meet future developments.
On one level, control packs are a practical means of simplifying specification and maintenance. But looking at them more broadly, they can also deliver real value by bringing structure to heating control as a whole.
By reducing variability, supporting compliance and enabling clearer communication with homeowners, control packs help installers deliver systems that are both correctly installed, and also properly understood and effectively used by the homeowner.

SYR FILLING STATION 3228ALL-IN-ONE CONNECT
One of the latest innovations from water technology manufacturer SYR is the Filling station 3228 All-in-One connect.
The company says the All-in-One+ Connect guarantees the smooth and effective operation of the heating installation – with automatic monitoring of the filling and water conditioning, determination of the conductivity, special leakage protection and an integrated RPZ valve to protect against backflow up to fluid category 4.
Automatic filling process
Thanks to electronic pressure monitoring, and the integrated pressure reducing valve, the filling process is stopped once the desired system pressure has been reached or the system has been refilled with conditioned water in case of pressure loss.
The filling frequencies are recorded, displayed in statistics and can be called up at any time. The initial system filling may also include the display of the total filling volume.
The built-in leakage detection system will monitor the frequency of top ups to the system, and the amount of water used and if this falls outside pre-set parameters alerts are triggered.
Wi-Fi enabled
The 3228 All-in-One Connect is Wi-Fi-enabled: the built-in access point creates a local Wi-Fi network. The SYR app can then be used to create, monitor, check and control a project. For example, the smart valve informs installers/operators via push notification that the connected cartridge will soon be exhausted. That way, the company says, replacement granules can be provided in good time.
Demineralisation
Installers can connect the 3228 All-in-one connect to the SYR demineralisation
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
• Built-in Wi-Fi and LAN connection
• Control and monitoring via SYR App
• Messages via push notification/email (in online mode)
• Electronic pressure monitoring and pressure reducing valve
• Control of conductivity
• Blending device
• Continuous monitoring of the filling water quality
• Motor-driven stop valve automatically interrupts the filling process when the demineralisation cartridge is exhausted
• On board digital display
• Upstream and downstream isolating valves.
cartridge system. The correct sized cartridge for the system can be selected
based on the result of the heating water analysis and the requirements of the system manufacturer.
Cartridges are available with different granules, HVE to completely demineralise it and HVE Plus for heating water demineralisation with pH stabilisation. The digital capacity control continuously monitors the filling level of the cartridge and displays the remaining amount of filling water. Cartridges come in various sizes and the company says they are easy to refill with the appropriate replacement granules. If the connected cartridge is exhausted, the motor-driven stop valve automatically interrupts the filling process. This prevents the heating installation from being filled with water that has not been conditioned.

NEWARK CYLINDERS LAUNCHES PANCAKE BUFFER VESSEL
Newark Cylinders has launched the Aquinox Pancake Buffer Vessel, a stainless-steel buffer vessel designed for heat pump installations where ceiling height or available space rules out a conventional unit.
Starting from 200mm tall and available in diameters up to 600mm, the Pancake Buffer Vessel is designed to stack directly above or below a hot water cylinder, allowing installers to make use of otherwise dead space in the plant room.
Tom Sharpe, Technical Sales Manager at Newark Cylinders, said: “Customers kept telling us the same thing. Stackable buffer vessels on the market were making their installations too tall. So we developed a solution for one customer, and once we saw how well it worked, we turned it into a standard range. The Pancake starts from 200mm tall and stacks above or below the cylinder without adding unnecessary height. It fits where nothing else will.”
The vessel is available in three diameters (475mm, 550mm, and 600mm), with an overall height range from 200mm to 410mm, and is rated to a maximum working pressure of 3.0 bar.
other higher-demand settings.
