New opportunities Towards the end of last year, just prior to the Budget, the government announced that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) would be extended. A key scheme to encourage the uptake of low carbon heating technologies in place of fossil fuel heating options, the BUS will now include air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries, alongside Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps. The grant for installation of Air-to-Air Heat Pumps – a technology which can provide both heating and cooling is to be £2,500, while Heat Batteries will beneﬁt from a similar level of funding. The Scheme already provides a £7,500 grant for the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps. You can read some industry reaction to the announcement on page 10. For households that are off-grid, often rural properties heated by oil, moving to heat pumps can throw up particular challenges. Here, the government has announced a consultation on renewable liquid fuel options, welcomed by industry associations OFTEC & UKIFDA. For more on this news turn please to page 11. Soon after the BUS announcement, in the November Budget, there was an announcement that some green levies would be removed from electricity bills from April 2026, a move designed to lower bills for many, including those using electricity to heat homes. Whilst gas boilers remain at the heart of the majority of heating systems in the UK, through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and moves in the Budget, the government continues to encourage consumers looking to change their heating system to consider alternative solutions. Throughout the sector there are already a wide number of low carbon heating solutions, and both the tools and the training to install, commission and maintain these systems are increasingly available. In this issue we take a closer look at Baxi’s new HP60 Heat pump (turn to page 22). Whilst many heating engineers will spend the winter working ﬂat out to help ensure customers stay warm, as the year progresses, a closer look at the growing variety of low carbon alternatives now included on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme could result in additional business opportunities.

News SURVEY INDICATES IMPACT OF TOOL THEFT When asked about the cost of replacing stolen tools following tool theft, the average financial loss was £3,092 – just one of the findings of a recent survey by temporary business van experts, Tempcover. The survey also found 88% of tradespeople are concerned about tool theft, and 72% reported having had their tools stolen. 28% said they usually store their tools in a vehicle overnight. Of those who had experienced tool theft, nearly all (96%) said they changed their security habits, including taking tools inside overnight. The survey was of 500 UK tradespeople and designed to explore how concerned they are about tool theft, what impact it can have and whether they are taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves. Claire Wills-Mckissick, temporary business van insurance expert at Tempcover added: “Our research highlights that while most tradespeople are concerned about tool theft, many are still leaving themselves exposed. Whether it’s your own van, a company vehicle, or a borrowed van with temporary insurance, leaving tools unattended or overnight can put them at risk, and potentially invalidate an insurance claim. Simple measures like taking tools inside, using lockable toolboxes, keeping a detailed inventory, and marking equipment, can make a real difference. Planning ahead and taking these precautions doesn’t just protect your tools; it can also help prevent costly delays and ﬁnancial loss.”

BAXI DOUBLES REWARD POINTS Baxi has launched a double points promotion through its Baxi Works loyalty scheme, enabling Baxi, Main and Megaflo installers to claim more rewards when they fit and register qualifying heating solutions. The campaign runs from 6 January to 2 March 2026 and applies automatically when members register eligible products – this includes the Baxi 400, 600 and 800 ranges, the Main Eco Compact range, Baxi Platinum combi, Baxi Megaflo system and Duo-Tec combi boilers, Megaflo Eco cylinders, pre-plumbed ASHP cylinders, ASHP cylinders and the HP40 and HP60 units. Rob Pearse, Residential Solutions Director at Baxi, said: “This promotion boils down to ‘work done; points doubled,’ and is our way of saying thank you to installers. Doubling points helps convert the essential work of Baxi engineers into useful kit and professional development, and it sits alongside the dependable product ranges and training we provide to help jobs be completed right first time.” Baxi describes the process as ‘simple’, noting: install a qualifying product and register it on Baxi Works by 2 March, and the doubled points will be applied automatically to the account. Members may track their points and redeem them through Baxi Works.

GET A FREE GILET WITH SANIFLO The warranty campaign Saniflo ran previously is making a short-term return after several installers requested a Gilet in time for the cooler winter months. STIEBEL ELTRON UK ACCELERATES HEAT PUMP TRAINING Heat pump manufacturer, STIEBEL ELTRON UK, says that since January 2025 more than 500 installers have registered for training courses, both at the company’s Bromborough headquarters and online. Of those, 222 have already completed in-person sessions. Another 62 participants have successfully completed the online Heat Pump Pass course. Additionally, the company reports that over 100 installers and homeowners have attended its hpnext and Heat Pumps for Homeowners webinars in the past year. The two-day Advanced Heat Pump Service, Repair and Commissioning course remains the most popular choice. Strong foundation To meet the demand, the company has invested £750,000 to expand its training facilities. It says that the addition of a 20,000 sq ft space brings the company’s total investment in its training capabilities to more than £1million in the past year. D-CARBONISE WITH DAIKIN LIVE EVENT LAUNCHED Daikin has launched D-Carbonise With Daikin Live, a nationwide series of evening networking events which the company says are designed to connect, inspire and empower the professionals that are shaping the future of low-carbon buildings across the commercial HVAC sector. Taking place in cities throughout the UK, including London, Leeds, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle, the events look to bring together HVAC professionals, building designers, developers and construction industry leaders to explore how smarter design and innovative technology can drive meaningful carbon reduction.

The SkillPLUMB 2025 UK Champion and gold medal winner has been named as Dillon Newton of the Cornwall College Group. The silver medal was awarded to Jackson Gill of New College Durham and CGE Yorkshire Ltd; while bronze medal went to Jack Fenton of Belfast Metropolitan College and Ian Reid Heating. Across two and a half days at Bridgend College, competitors had to tackle a complex plumbing installation task and also demonstrate low carbon knowledge in a heat pump task developed in collaboration with Ideal Heating. SkillPLUMB is organised by industry charity BPEC and is part of the WorldSkills UK competition framework. The event has Ideal Heating as its headline sponsor and is supported by other industry sponsors including SNIPEF, Water Safe and CIPHE. Speaking of his win, Dillon said: “It feels absolutely amazing to have won. It was the most nervous I’ve been for a very long time but the entire week was such an incredible experience.” SkillPLUMB is open to plumbing apprentices and Level 2 or 3 plumbing students. BURTON SMITH INVESTS TO SUPPORT RISING DEMAND Burton Smith Group, which provides a range of plumbing and heating services, has invested £900,000 to expand both its fleet and workforce as it responds to significant growth in reactive commercial repairs and maintenance. The Bedfordshire based business has added 20 new vans to its fleet and recruited 10 qualified plumbing and heating specialists, increasing total headcount to just over 50. Prior to the investment, the company operated 25 vans across core service areas including plumbing, water supply, drainage and leak detection. Founder and Company Director Toby Burton said the investment directly reflects growing demand from both homeowners and commercial clients. He said: “More multi-national chains are turning to us for nationwide emergency callouts, as many simply can’t afford to wait days or even weeks for their own maintenance contractors to respond.”

HEAT PUMP ASSOCIATION HOSTS INAUGURAL CONFERENCE On the 26th of November last year, the Heat Pump Association (HPA) celebrated its 30th anniversary with its first-ever Conference, bringing together members, policy makers and industry leaders. Held at the British Library in London, the event followed on from the HPA’s Annual General Meeting, at which the Association presented its AGM report, providing an overview of progress over the past year and key priorities for the year ahead. The event gathered professionals from across the heating and energy sector under the theme ‘Heat Pumps: How to go further, faster…’. Reﬂecting on the event Charlotte Lee, Chief Executive of the HPA said: “It was fantastic to see so many members, stakeholders, and policymakers come together to celebrate the Association’s 30th anniversary and look ahead to what’s next. The discussions throughout the day showed the strength and diversity of our sector, and the shared ambition to make low-carbon heating a reality for homes, businesses and industry across the UK.”

SHOWERSAVE LAUNCHES HOT WATER CYLINDER SIZING REPORT

FIREANGEL DONATES CO ALARMS TO WINTER WARMTH INITIATIVE Fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide safety technology manufacturer, FireAngel, is once again supporting Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) Winter Warmth Pack initiative by donating carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to help protect vulnerable residents during the colder months. Between December and February, a total of 75 Winter Warmth Packs will be distributed across Northamptonshire. Each pack contains a selection of cold-weather essentials, including a pair of thermal socks, a fleece scarf, thermal gloves, thermal hat, torch and fleece blanket, as well as a FireAngel carbon monoxide alarm designed to help protect residents from CO exposure in homes where heating may be unsafe or used irregularly. The packs are distributed by NFRS community prevention teams during fire safety visits and targeted community engagement sessions. Tina Collett, Prevention Team Leader at Northampton Fire and Rescue Service, said: “These Winter Warmth Packs make a huge difference to the wellbeing and safety of vulnerable residents during the colder months. We are incredibly grateful for FireAngel’s continued support and partnership in helping us protect those at the highest risk.”

Showersave has published a new report and executive summary exploring hot water cylinder sizing for domestic heat pump systems with showers. The report, titled ‘Hot water cylinder sizing for domestic heat pump systems with showers: Accounting for Waste Water Heat Recovery and Instantaneous Electric Showers’, explores how WWHRS and IES can reduce hot water demand, how WWHRS can lower electricity consumption by pre-heating the incoming cold water, and why improved hot water cylinder-sizing models are needed to accurately reflect the impact of these technologies. Tony Gordon, Managing Director at Showersave, said: “Our customers, including housebuilders and housing associations, face several challenges when installing heat pumps, particularly finding space for a hot water cylinder in homes that previously didn’t require one. This report demonstrates why the current guidance on hot water cylinder sizing must evolve to reflect new technologies such as WWHRS and IES.”

BUS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL SOLUTIONS

The Government has announced the expansion of Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), now to include Air-to-Air Heat Pumps and Heat Batteries.

he Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has been expanded to include air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries. Through the broadened scheme, £2,500 is available to support the installation of Air-to-Air Heat Pumps – a technology which can provide both heating and cooling. The installation of Heat Batteries will also benefit from a similar level of funding. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, part of the Government’s Warm Homes Plan, continues to see both Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps receive a £7,500 grant. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey said: “Air-to-air heat pumps offer the best of both worlds – keeping you warm in winter while cooling you down when summer comes along. “With heat pumps more popular than ever, we want to make sure as many people as possible can benefit, especially those in flats or small homes without central heating, so they have greater choice when upgrading their property.”

Vital role Commenting on the move, Charlotte Lee, Chief Executive of the Heat Pump Association said: “The Heat Pump Association welcomes today’s announcement to expand the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries. Since its launch, the BUS has played a vital role in accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating, giving thousands of households access to clean, efficient technologies and helping to build the UK supply chain. “Broadening the range of supported technologies is an important step in offering consumers more choice. To maintain this success, an ambitious budget allocation under the Warm Homes Plan will be key to ensuring that the scheme continues to deliver for households and industry, supporting jobs and long-term investment.” Paul Smith, MD at NIBE Energy Systems Limited commented: “One of the most signiﬁcant changes for our industry is the decision to include Exhaust Air Heat

Pumps (EAHPs) within BUS eligibility. EAHPs are a highly efficient solution for many modern homes, particularly apartments and new builds, where their ability to recover waste heat and provide consistent, reliable heating and hot water makes them extremely effective. Their inclusion under the full hydronic heat pump grant of £7,500 is a positive and forward-thinking step that will give homeowners and developers another robust option in the move towards electriﬁcation.” Iain Bevan, Daikin’s Residential New Business Director commented: “The inclusion of air-to-air heat pumps in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is great news for the industry and householders. The inclusion of air-to-air units is a clear recognition of the important role that this technology has in the UK’s decarbonisation journey. Daikin has long championed sustainable heating and cooling solutions, and has lobbied the government to include it in the scheme.”

Welcome Signal Russell Dean, Residential Product Group Director at Mitsubishi Electric described the announcement as, “a welcome signal that the UK is serious about making heat pumps mainstream, and expanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include air-to-air systems is a smart step that will open the door for more households to adopt more environmentally friendly heating and cooling.”

Heat batteries Heat battery manufacturer, tepeo has welcomed the announcement that heat batteries will become included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, enabling households to access a £2,500 subsidy towards installation. “Millions of homes in the UK are not suitable for heat pumps,” said Johan du Plessis, CEO of tepeo. “We have always believed that a one size ﬁts all approach does not work and by including heat batteries in the subsidy scheme, the government has acknowledged the need for practical solutions that make decarbonising home heating achievable for everyone. We look forward to continuing working closely with policymakers, installers, and energy suppliers to unlock the full potential of heat batteries as part of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.” tepeo’s ZEB heat battery allows homes to electrify heating using off-peak electricity. It stores energy as heat, to be used on demand. The company says the ZEB can have similar running costs to a gas boiler or heat pump.

Further consultation welcomed

The government has announced a new consultation on the role alternative heating systems, such as storage heaters, infrared panels or renewable liquid fuels can play in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Industry associations OFTEC & UKIFDA have welcomed the news. Paul Rose, CEO of OFTEC, and Ken Cronin, CEO of UKIFDA, commented: “We are pleased that DESNZ is asking for evidence to inform future OFTEC CEO Paul Rose (left) and UKIFDA decisions on a potential renewable liquid CEO Ken Cronin heating fuel obligation. The consultation will explore the use of renewable liquid fuels for oil heated buildings and recognises that consumers could reduce emissions from their heating whilst keeping their existing boilers. This avoids the disruption and high upfront cost of transitioning to an alternative heating system which survey data shows is supported by consumers. “Our industry has demonstrated the viability of this approach and we welcome the recognition in the consultation of our proactive role. This includes the readiness of the sector to work with officials, and our industry project over three heating seasons which saw Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) successfully used in 150 oil heated buildings across the UK.” The consultation closes on 10th February 2026. lumbing jointing compounds (or pastes as they are also known as) have been a trusted part of water system installation practice for decades, which is applied to the threads of compression fittings to create a watertight seal, these jointing compounds still remain widely used in domestic hot and cold water systems, commercial buildings, and healthcare environments. As standards evolve and our awareness of water safety improves, so too must our approach to these jointing compounds. Over recent years there have been changes to WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) testing and certification for these products, alongside some concerns about potential bacterial contamination issues linked to compound overuse, meaning that installers and project / estate managers must now think more carefully than ever about product selection and application. This article explains what has changed and why knowing exactly what jointing compound is being used on a domestic hot and cold water system matters for compliance, performance, and public health.

WRAS Testing: From 85°C to 23°C What’s Changed?

For many years, WRAS approval testing for jointing compounds was carried out at up to 85°C, a temperature chosen to reflect typical domestic hot water systems, this assured installers that a product approved by WRAS was safe for contact with potable water in both cold and hot systems. However, WRAS’s testing laboratory has now revised its testing methodology, reducing the test temperature to 23°C. This shift aligns with European standard testing protocols, which traditionally uses room temperature conditions when assessing whether any substances may migrate into drinking water.

Why the change matters

he UK government has set ambitious targets to increase annual heat pump installations from 55,000 in 2021 to 600,000 by 2028 which will make the UK one of the largest heat pump markets in Europe. For many gas installers, this transition to a new technology may feel challenging but it also presents an exciting opportunity. For those eager to futureproof their business, now is the moment to fully understand how heat pumps operate, where they deliver the greatest value, and how to conﬁdently guide customers through the beneﬁts.

The opportunity Homeowners are becoming increasingly aware of both carbon reduction goals and the long-term energy savings that can be achieved with renewables. Rising gas prices and the volatility of fossil fuel markets have made electric and renewable heating solutions more attractive. However, historically the biggest barrier to switching to heat pumps has been the cost of the product itself and installation. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has now been extended until 2028, which means homeowners can access grants of £7,500 towards the installation of an air or ground source heat pump, signiﬁcantly reducing ﬁnancial pressure for homeowners. Whilst homeowners understand the need for the transition to heat pumps, they do not necessarily understand how the technology works and again this is an area where installers in the know can capitalise by educating their customers.

How Heat Pumps work Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) do not generate heat in the way a gas boiler does. By extracting latent heat from the air or ground and amplifying it through a vapour compression cycle, they provide space heating and hot water at a fraction of the carbon cost.

Modern systems are far more capable than many people realise. Today’s heat pumps can operate efficiently even when outdoor temperatures drop to -15°C, dispelling one of the most common misconceptions among potential adopters. For heating engineers, performance metrics are key. While the coefficient of performance (COP) is a familiar measure, heat pumps are better assessed using the seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP). SCOP reﬂects average efficiency across an entire heating season, factoring in ﬂuctuating outdoor temperatures and real-world usage. This makes it a more accurate indicator of how a system will perform day to day in UK homes. Most air-to-water ASHPs, including the Ariston Nimbus range, now achieve SCOP ratings of 3.0 or higher. In practical terms, that means for every kilowatt of electricity consumed, the system delivers around 3kW of usable heat.

Not a direct swap Although heat pumps share some principles with traditional heating systems, installing one is not a direct swap for a gas boiler. As heat pumps operate at lower ﬂow temperatures, typically between

35–55°C, it’s crucial to ensure radiators or underﬂoor heating are correctly sized and to also bear in mind that heat pumps work best in well-insulated properties. Effective system design is equally important. Accurate heat loss calculations are essential, and heat pump installations require a more detailed approach than conventional systems. Installers must take into account insulation quality, thermal mass, room-by-room heat losses, and ﬂow temperature curves to guarantee that the system performs as intended. Controls also play a central role. Beyond giving homeowners an easy way to manage their heating, modern intuitive controls provide installers with powerful tools for commissioning, servicing, and troubleshooting.

Upskilling requirements The UK currently faces a considerable skills gap, with too few qualiﬁed professionals to meet the Government’s 2035 heat pump installation targets. Why has Baxi introduced the new HP60 Heat Pump?

The transition to low-carbon heating is gathering pace, and installers need products to get ahead of the curve. Legislative changes are something to keep an eye on – in the EU, all air source heat pumps must use refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) of 150 or less from 2027. Call-out windows have tightened, customer expectations have risen and the UK’s mix of ageing, complex and heavily modified heating systems means even simple jobs can become unpredictable. Installers are looking for ways to protect their time and avoid the spirals of disruption that come with draining and reﬁlling systems. One shift that has taken hold over the past few years is the move towards pipe freezing as a fast, clean and dependable way to isolate pipework without emptying an entire circuit. What was once seen as a specialist intervention has now become part of everyday practice. Many installers are discovering that by avoiding a full drain-down, they remove a signiﬁcant amount of uncertainty from the job.

From there it quickly moved from an occasional tactic to a routine part of his workﬂow. He now uses freezing for radiator moves, valve replacements and localised heating issues where disturbing the wider system risks triggering air locks, shifting debris or opening the door to faults he didn’t create. ool storage has changed a lot over the years but one of the simplest options has held its ground: the tool roll. While boxes, bags and rucksacks all have their place, there’s a strong case for keeping a tool roll in the van or on the job. They fold down small, weigh very little and keep everyday tools secure without rattling around. For tradespeople who like to work with a pared-back selection, a roll also helps to build a personal kit that’s easy to grab at the start of the day.

A tool roll makes sense where space is tight. Once unrolled, everything is laid out clearly so you’re not digging to the bottom of a box or patting every pocket to ﬁnd the right tool. Holding tools in a fabric wrap also stops tools from wearing through jacket linings or trouser pockets, something anyone who has carried pliers loose can relate to. Electrical safety remains a critical issue for heating engineers. With safe isolation, the right tools and careful verification, tradespeople can prevent accidents and protect lives, stresses Steve Dunning, Managing Director at Martindale.

STAYING SAFE

AROUND ELECTRICITY E ngineers in heating, cooling and plumbing environments routinely face electrical hazards, often without being fully aware of the risks. Whether installing boilers or working close to live circuits, even a minor slip can lead to severe injury. Because electricity can be an unseen danger, proper safe isolation procedures are essential for anyone working near electrical systems. Effective isolation prevents accidental contact with live parts – protecting both engineers and anyone else nearby – by ensuring all relevant circuits and equipment are fully de-energised before work begins.

Lockout kits A complete lockout kit is central to carrying out safe isolation correctly. At minimum, it should include a selection of locking devices for miniature circuit breakers and other breaker types, a padlock with a unique key or combination, a hasp for use when more than one person is working on the same system, and a range of lockout tags and warning labels.

The key or code must stay with the person performing the work or an appointed representative, preventing anyone else from removing the lock and accidentally re-energising the circuit. Once the breaker is locked off, a clear warning tag should be attached to conﬁrm that the circuit is isolated and work is in progress.

Proving dead Correctly locking off the circuit is only part of the process. Before any work starts, the circuit must be proven dead using a dedicated voltage indicator compliant with BS EN61243-3, such as the Martindale VI-13800 or VI-15000. Indicators used for proving dead must function without relying on a battery, eliminating the risk of a depleted battery giving a false reading. To prove dead, check the voltage indicator on a known source, preferably a proving unit, then test the circuit. After testing, conﬁrm the voltage indicator again on the known source to ensure it has not failed during use. Although a live source could be used, a matched proving unit is safer, more reliable and always accessible.

Kits for gas engineers To help gas engineers working near electrical systems comply with Gas Safe Register Technical Bulletin 118 (TB118), Martindale Electric offers two dedicated safety kits. THE VALUE OF APPRENTICESHIPS

Kevin Wellman, Chief Executive Officer of the CIPHE, provides his thoughts on the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget and the impact it could have on the plumbing sector.

‘‘W

hilst there is still a need for stronger, long-term support for the heating and plumbing sector, the CIPHE supports the government’s focus on funding apprenticeships and pathways into the industry announced in the Autumn Budget. Reeves’ announcement of apprenticeship support for SMEs signals that the government is ﬁnally recognising the value of apprenticeships. It’s now critical that it engages and collaborates with the sector to turn promises into meaningful action. “Additionally, the continuation of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is welcome and brings stability and certainty to the industry despite the growing uncertainty in the run-up to the announcement. Levies are still required to support the transition to low-carbon heating. “Supporting young people through apprenticeships and training in tandem with long-term policies on low-carbon heating is the best way to guarantee the success of the sector. Only then can the plumbing and heating sector thrive, attract new talent, and play its leading role in the UK’s energy transition. “The CIPHE Manifesto 2025–2027 makes clear that without sustained support for skills and low carbon initiatives, the sector risks being unable to meet the UK’s energy transition and Net Zero targets.”

Under pressure “Demand for qualified plumbing and heating professionals continues to rise. No

more so during the colder months when many heating systems fail. Ageing infrastructure, the need to meet modern building standards, and the move towards low-carbon technologies are all driving the requirement for skilled professionals to enter the industry. “However, the number of skilled workers entering the industry is simply not keeping pace. We are hopeful that Reeves’ funding for apprenticeships will help drive skilled professionals into the sector.”

The BUS scheme “The expansion of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a positive outcome that increases the choice for many in the installation of an air source heat pump. A coherent, long-term framework is needed if the scheme is to make the impact the government intends in the years to come.”

Investment in skills “Aside from additional funding, the government must take a strategic approach to building technical skills in the workforce. Offering high-quality apprenticeships, like those which incorporate our Level 2 and 3 Plumbing Standards, and supporting retraining for those who wish to move into the sector later in their careers are both critical for the future. Colleges, training providers and employers all need stability if they are to deliver the plumbing and heating installer workforce that the UK relies upon.”

Supporting young people through apprenticeships and training in tandem with long-term policies on low-carbon heating is the best way to guarantee the success of the sector Changing perceptions “Whilst Reeves’ funding into apprenticeships is welcome, efforts also need to be focused on changing perceptions around heating and plumbing as a trade. “Modern plumbing and heating roles require technical skill, problem-solving, and precision. Jim Lacey, from JLN Plumbing and Heating, runs through some of the features of the SYR filter before installing the device on a heat pump system. Insulation

iltration is an important part of heating systems, helping maintain water quality, maximise efficiency and protect the system. The SYR Advanced Pro Heating Filter is a German-engineered solution designed for both boiler and heat pump systems which offers dual-action protection. The magnetic element traps ferrous debris whilst the integral 100-micron mesh strainer catches any additional non-ferrous material. While installing the SYR filter onto a new heat pump system, Jim Lacey notes: “The filter comes as a 28mm connection, but within the box there are adapters to reduce this down to 22mm if you need them. Also, we have the insulation jacket, which is an optional extra to insulate the whole body and connections of the filter.” Talking about the installation Jim says: “You’ll see an arrow on the filter body,

which indicates the direction of flow of the water through the filter.” After demonstrating how to connect it, Jim notes: “Bear in mind that if you are using 22mm pipe work, you’ll use the reducing sets that come in the box with the filter.” Explaining the versatility of the filter Jim says: “the pipe work to the filter can be on any angle as the filter will turn to suit its downwards orientation.”

Commenting on the purpose-made jacket designed for the filter Jim notes: “It literally just clips together, onto the filter with a top and bottom cover for the back section and a cover for the front section, and you’ll find the whole filter is fully insulated along with your pipe work. Then there’s just a clip-on cover that goes on and holds the insulation in place.” Jim continues by explaining the importance of fitting a filter to a heat pump system. He states: “In modern heat pump systems, filtration is vital. It all adds up to the efficiency of the system. In a new video, Chirag from CP Utility Solutions, puts the JetFlush Rapid+ from Sentinel to work cleaning a heating system in Essex.

he Sentinel JetFlush Rapid+ power flushing unit has been designed to quickly and safely remove sludge and scale from central heating systems, restoring thermal performance. It can be used in conjunction with the Sentinel range of cleaning additives and is also a point from which to dose inhibitor. Chirag explains: “The JetFlush can achieve up to 90 litres per minute which is fantastic for getting rid of sludge and debris in the heating system. It’s also got reversible flow as well so you can shift the flow back and forth and agitate any

WORCESTER BOSCH LAUNCHES NEW FLOOR-STANDING BOILER Worcester Bosch has announced the introduction of its new floor-standing boiler, the Greenstar 8000 F. The gas boiler is available in combi and regular variants, with outputs of up to 50kW. The boiler features touch buttons and the ability to connect wireless controls. For the installer, it has a pre-piping roller jig, designed to enable a straightforward switch-out from Worcester Bosch’s previous ranges – Greenstar CDi Highflow or FS CDi. It also includes space for a 22mm Greenstar System Filter in the combi variant. Martyn Bridges, Director of External Affairs at Worcester Bosch, said; “Our ultra-powerful new floor-standing boiler is built with convenience, control and comfort in mind. UNICO SYSTEM HVAC REPLACEMENT

large bungalow has undergone a new type of HVAC replacement that has combined UNICO’s 3-in-1 heating, ventilation and cooling system, with a Vaillant Air Source Heat Pump and its supporting controls. The two integrated systems achieved a heat rating of 4.4 Coefficient of Performance (COP). The Unico System’s 3-in-1 heating, cooling and ventilation capability were noted by the homeowner, whose research led him to local contractor JLN Plumbing Heating & Electrics, a registered Unico System Specialist Partner (USP) with over 25 years' experience in the industry. The company’s accreditation under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme enabled the homeowner to take advantage of the financial incentive

offered through the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which supports the decarbonisation of homes and the installation of heat pumps. JLN is also an accredited Vaillant Advance Heat Pump installer, which enabled this combination of technologies.

The system achieved a heating rate 4.4 Coefficient of Performance (COP) in March 2025, a 3.2 hot water COP in May and a 4.8 cooling COP in July, with the heat pump producing 4.8 units of cooling for every one unit of electricity consumed. CLIVET INTRODUCES FULLNESS HEAT PUMP Clivet has introduced FULLNESS, an all-in-one air-to-air solution without an outdoor unit for single and multi-family applications. The FULLNESS air-to-air heat pump features R-454C refrigerant (GWP < 150). The company says the decentralised system is capable of satisfying: ‘heating, cooling, domestic hot water production, mechanical ventilation with thermodynamic recovery and electronic filtration, dehumidification’. The unit is designed to maintain the temperature of the domestic hot water contained in the optional tank that can be installed under or beside the heat pump module. GRUNDFOS GO range In this new video, Chriag from CP Utility Solutions is changing a integral pump at a house in Essex. He uses the Grundfos GO app to determine the correct replacement pump before ﬁtting a new Grundfos pump at the property. Chirag then uses the GO app to ensure the new pump is running at the correct load. He notes: “Then the app. It couldn’t be simpler. Scan the pump, follow the prompts on the app. It’s super simple, step-by-step guide, replicates it straight onto the new pump and you are away.” Explaining why he always keeps both the Grundfos UPS4 GO and ALPHA2 GO pumps on his van, Chirag notes: “Having these two pumps on the van, it just makes it easier for me. SYR Advanced Pro Heating Filter In this video, Jim Lacey, from JLN Plumbing and Heating, runs through some of the features of the SYR filter before installing the device on a heat pump system. Jim notes: “In modern heat pump systems, filtration is vital. It all adds up to the efficiency of the system. RF SOLUTIONS Mainslink Chirag from CP Utility Solutions demonstrates how to use a Mainslink by RF Solutions to fix a heating system pump overrun wirelessly. Running through the components of the solution, Chirag says: “You’ve got two units in here, one unit we are going to fit here by the boiler. The other unit is going to go upstairs where the pump is.” Chirag explains that the installation will, “send a wireless mains switch from that pump to the boiler, and vice versa, so that the boiler can actually talk to the pump wirelessly without us having to run any cables.” The unit is IP68 rated and made in the UK.
