We can all dream a little in 2021 Having failed dismally to predict a global pandemic, you’ll not be surprised to hear that we’ve taken a rather large sledgehammer to our previously trusty crystal ball.

Instead, for 2021, we have decided to break with tradition and present our very own wish list for each coming month. Who knows, like some of our most outlandish predictions over the years, a few may actually come to fruition.

June Finally the powers that be take a mighty scalpel to the onerous amount of red tape and bureaucracy hampering the growth of so many small companies.

January No debate about it, a global roll out of the best clinically proven COVID-19 vaccine arrives, completely eradicating this horrible virus for good. We can then all get on with the proper business of living our lives to the full once more.

August A summer-long heat wave arrives as millions of ‘staycationers’ enjoy everything this unlocked country has to offer for a perfect holiday.

February It’s consistently fallen on deaf ears since it was first mooted more than a decade ago, but there has never been a more opportune moment for the government to cut the current VAT on repair, maintenance and improvement work to just five per cent. With the added bonus, of course, that – at a stroke – it will remove the cowboy operators’ cash advantage.

March An extension of the Stamp Duty holiday to help the backlog of home sales, and the frantic rush to complete before the end of month deadline would provide a shot in the arm to an uncertain housing market.

April One extension that has been secured is to the Green Homes Grant, a move that should herald the arrival of a much wider retrofit strategy. Energy saving home improvements can be a huge source of work for electricians and wealth for the economy.

May Two bank holidays and at last the penny seems to be dropping as hapless DIYers decide that it’s best to spend the day on the beach rather than in A&E as a result of yet another unmitigated DIY disaster.

July At last, the England football team lives up to expectations by winning Euro 2021 in style following a comprehensive penalty shoot-out victory over Germany!

September The late payment burden is confronted with genuine penalties for the worst transgressors, and more protection for the small business owner.

October One of the largest oil fields ever discovered is located just a few miles off the Kent coast in the now post-Brexit (clearly defined) British territorial waters. The potential revenue could make the COVID-19 tax bill quite literally look like a drop in the ocean.

November Having resumed this year after a COVID-19 ravished 2020, our highly popular ELEX exhibitions sign off with a record attendance at the newly added Bolton Arena as thousands of tradespeople look for a pre-Christmas bargain on the very latest tools and equipment.

December After being confined to the North Pole last year, Santa and his socially distanced elves return in all their former glory, and the nation can look forward to a truly magical 2022.

Have a good month and, who knows, one or two of those predictions may just come true.

SECTT and ESF deliver lockout kits to apprentices The Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) has once again teamed up with Electrical Safety First (ESF) to give free lockout kits to Scotland’s trainee electricians.

Now in its 12th year, the partnership saw SECTT training officers visit colleges and training centres across the country to hand out more than 650 of the kits to 3rd Stage apprentices and adult trainees, observing physical distancing at all times.

Worth £30 each, the kits save lives by ensuring that electricity is turned off – and stays off – until work is completed.

This fundamental process is essential in helping to prevent serious or fatal electric shocks.

Among the recipients were trainees at Ayshire College, Ayr Campus, Dundee & Angus College and Perth College UHI, with other apprentices presented with their kits at all 21 SECTT Approved Centres.

Anne Galbraith, CEO of SECTT, said: “Adopting safe working practices and procedures is essential and embeds the right approach at the start of an electrician’s career is key. The kits not

only provide crucial safety equipment but also promote safe practice throughout these trainees’ working lives. Everything we do at SECTT is safety-critical, so as an organisation we're proud to do all we can to support this message.”

Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of ESF, added: “It’s vital that safe working procedures are undertaken across the industry, but to be properly effective they need to be established at the start of an electrician’s career. These free kits don’t

Employers urged to 'keep skills alive' JTL is launching a new campaign to urge employers to take advantage of government grants and take on an apprentice.

The ‘Keep the skills alive and the lights shining’ campaign encourages employers to utilise the cash incentive being offered by the government and to take on an apprentice before January 31st.

In recognition of the value apprentices can bring to our economy, an incentive payment of £2,000 is being offering to employers who hire an apprentice between the ages of 16 and 24, while £1,500 will be paid whenever an apprentice aged 25 and over is taken on.

There's no limit on the number of incentive payments that an employer can claim for apprentices eligible to receive funding, providing each apprentice meets the eligibility criteria. Employers will need to set up an account on the Apprenticeship Service portal in order to access the funding, which JTL can assist with.

Ideal helps students get data terminations right

A partnership between Ideal Industries and Coleg Cambria has helped to set the next generation of electricians on course to faster, more consistent data cabling installations.

Coleg Cambria is one of a number of colleges benefiting from Ideal Industries’ knowledge sharing approach to working with the further education sector, which has seen the global electrical products manufacturer demonstrate a number of its products to students.

Amongst them is the innovative FT-45 Feed Thru modular plug and Crimp Tool system for the termination of CAT5e, CAT6 or CAT6A. The system has delivered on Ideal Industries’ promise for ease of use and consistency, enabling many of the students to complete terminations correctly every time.

Retrofit lighting is the key to the government’s ten-point plan Tamlite also believes that retrofitting of outdated lighting systems will be key to improving energy use across the public sector, following the release of the Prime Minister’s ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution.

Boris Johnson’s announcement will see £1 billion in funding allotted to making new and existing homes and public buildings more efficient as part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Whilst innovative technologies will form part of the blueprint to allow the UK to work towards its 2050 net-zero target, some may have forgotten the impact lighting can have on saving energy and reducing carbon emissions, and by replacing outdated lighting systems, coupled with intelligent lighting control, it will go a long way to making public buildings more efficient.

John Allden comments: “The UK government has set in law its net-zero targets, so the Prime Minister’s latest announcement on how this can be

achieved must be welcomed. Yet, whilst innovation and new technologies form part of the overall decarbonisation plan, we can’t forget the simple steps those in charge of running public buildings can take to make sure they reach carbon reduction targets.

“Lighting can be a huge source of energy consumption in the public sector, and small changes can make a big difference. Replacing outdated lighting with modern LED systems can effectively reduce energy use and carbon emissions.

Such retrofitting upgrades are easy to do and should be seen as a key component of the government’s green strategy, allowing public sector organisations to make a long-term commitment to net zero carbon emissions.”

HAL makes light work of safety testing at NET LED NET LED has improved the electrical safety testing of its commercial and industrial LED lighting products by using low power multi-function LED testers from Seaward.

NET LED invested in two HAL LEDs which, so far, have been used to verify the safety of more than 30,000 units manufactured at its factory in Cambridge before they're distributed to electrical wholesalers across the UK. It also uses the equipment to batch-test any products sourced from other manufacturers as part of quality control procedures.

Each tester provides power measurement readings with a resolution of 0.2VA below 1,000VA and performs continuity and ground/earth bond tests alongside AC/DC Hipot (FLASH/Dielectric Strength). This ensures NET LED’s products guarantee the quality, performance and reliability required and are safety compliant with EN 60598.

Function testing is also undertaken to check each unit effectively switches on/off, performs correctly at the required power consumption levels and that any ancillary equipment operates in accordance with technical specifications.

Test results are stored automatically by the HAL units, giving full traceability. This ensures all products are proven to be quality assured before leaving the premises. NET LED uses this data to produce a test record for all manufactured units in the event of any damage during distribution, or to track and trace any product returns, in line with the company’s customer service policies.

Oliver Bubb, MD at NET LED, said: “We've invested in improving our testing with the HALs, which offer far more rigorous capabilities and have significantly reduced the time it takes to complete a test, as we have ramped up our own manufacturing capacity. Ultimately, the two testers provide the reassurance and peace-of-mind that every unit leaving our facility is 100% safe-to-use and operates as required, Seaward has provided us with a first-class aftersales service”.

ECS urges card holders to renew

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is recommending that ECS Card holders renew their cards in order to show their competency level on-site.

Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment centres have been re-opening since the middle of last year as measures are put in place to make these COVID-secure. If your card has expired or if it has less than three months left, then it’s time to renew – and it’s never been easier.

Existing cardholders can register for a MyECS account and renew online. On MyECS you'll see any specific messages relating to your card such as new criteria or if you need to renew with an ECS partner organisation.

Employers can also apply or renew on behalf of their employees through the ECS Employer Portal. This service is free to access and there are almost 3,000 contractors using this UK-wide to manage their workforce’s ECS cards, qualifications and health and safety awareness.

A CLEAR ROUTE TO ZERO CARBON Luke Osborne, ECA Energy & Emerging Technologies Solutions Advisor, looks at some of the detail behind the government’s recent 10-point plan and how electrical professionals will need to react to take advantages of the new opportunities it could present.

A

lthough COVID-19 dominated global and national headlines in 2020, the ongoing prospect of climate change is also being taken seriously by policy makers.

This is evidenced in the government's recent 10-point plan for a 'green industrial revolution', which will aim to help tackle climate change by getting the UK to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Carbon reductions The 2030 ban on internal combustion engine vehicle sales in the plan is clearly a positive step, but collaboration between industry, government and DNOs will be vital to make it work.

The extension of the Green Homes Grant was a useful response also, but there is much work to be done to enable a skilled and trained workforce that can deliver results.

Meanwhile, we look forward to more detail on how the 10-point plan will be achieved, in addition to the release of the energy white paper and the next iteration of the Building Regulations and the Future Homes Standard, both of which will be key to future carbon reductions.

Industry vs climate change Evidence shows we have little time to usefully mitigate the increasing effects of global warming. ECA is heavily focused on supporting the electrotechnical and wider engineering services industry in delivering the technologies and skills

needed to help meet the UK Net Zero Carbon 2050 targets.

To this end, ECA and partners have been looking for significant improvements in policy and fiscal support for clean energy and energy efficiency measures, enabling us to ‘build back’ better and deliver lower carbon economic recovery.

Tools for success ECA, working with government and industry stakeholders, will be looking for the adoption at scale of low-to-no carbon energy systems and energy efficiency measures. This needs to include the delivery and installation of: ● Solar Photovoltaic (PV) ● Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) ● Heat pumps (air-sourced, groundsourced, water sourced and air-to-air) ● Direct electrification of heating (infra-red, underfloor and storage heating) ● Wind turbines ● Hydropower ● Energy efficiency measures ● Smart building controls ● Electrification of transport Skills for the future We must ensure that low carbon installation is carried out by a suitably trained and competent workforce. This means practically useful and properly scoped training for new entrants, notably

in the form of apprenticeships, but also for the very much larger cohort of existing installers who also need to upskill for the low-carbon economy.

In order for Net Zero Carbon 2050 to be achievable, full support and commitment for the necessary skills is needed by both government and industry.

Long term market confidence and policy direction is also vital to ensuring companies have security and can invest in their workforce.

There's never been a more exciting time to be a part of the UK electrotechnical industry, nor a time that requires such urgency for the skills, products and systems that our sector can deliver.

This is only logical because there’s still a huge mountain to climb in making our homes energy efficient. UK households account for 40% of our emissions, according to the UK’s independent Committee for Climate Change, so they’re bang in the front line of carbon reduction in this country.

Energy performance improvements After the recent announcements regarding the phasing out of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, it’s hard to see something that will involve such structural change in the motor industry as greenwash. In other words, the government surely means business, and that’s a good thing. Right?

That said, we must also make sure they look beyond the big industry and headline infrastructure projects such as HS2 and Hinckley C, and the ‘usual suspects’ of loft and cavity wall insulation and insist that cash and policy support, as a minimum,

So, despite having relatively cheap energy, we still have some of the highest energy bills and there are 21 million homes out there just waiting for clear guidance from the top to give them sufficient confidence to invest in improvements.

Once that happens, few people have the sort of reach to those millions of individual homes that electrical installers do. So, what can you, as an individual, do to cut the carbon footprint?

This age of technology-enabled services is fast paced now and social media is helping to keep individuals informed and updated instantly about what is happening in the world around them. Additionally, it can also play a big part in their happiness (or lack of it) and overall wellbeing.

When I first entered the electrical industry (a few years ago now), I remember being stood in a house on my own, wiring a kitchen and a new consumer unit and having zero concerns that the outside world would ever see my workmanship. I’m sure it’s something that wouldn’t have ultimately bothered me, but the thought was never there.

Now, there’s that thought at the back of your mind that says: “Someone could post a picture of this on social media, I must make it look nice and ensure it’s correct.”

Social media adoption has some really strong benefits to it, but one of the downsides is that it has given the world the ability to negatively impact an individual’s business and personal life. The level of

critique we used to experience is now a thousand times greater.

There are now many different types of social media platforms that people can use positively to promote who they are and what they do. My personal preference (at the moment) is Instagram but only because I have my own account ‘locked’ so that family and close friends have access. It’s not a ‘waffle’ platform but more a visual one.

Even though we have multiple platforms from which to choose, some statistics and profiling has been done to show how people interact with social media; this is universal and can be attributed to any platform. The favourite bit research that I’ve read up on is in relation to the ‘10 types of social media users’, which I’ll summarise for you.

If you use social media in your daily life, a fun challenge is to write the name of an individual who falls into each of the following category types: The Listener This person flies under the radar and very rarely interacts with 'likes' or 'shares'.

They’ll rarely/never post content, but you still know they’re there.

The Activist They understand the reach of social media and strive to have their voice heard to make a difference.

The Spammer This person constantly posts and will likely believe that their content is of a high quality and that sending multiple messages regularly is the ‘cool’ thing to do.

The Passionista These users are very passionate and like to share their views on things that they believe in. These people don’t force their opinions on you, but they have views that in most cases you agree with.

The Social Butterfly These users are the type that will post pictures with people you know and can make the world seem smaller than it is. If you want to see how popular these users are, simply click the ‘media’ button on their profile.

The Troll This user type will post unpleasant content and portray a view that everyone has an opinion, yet they’ll insult and generally

throw the gauntlet down when folk oppose theirs. The best way to deal with this type of user is to simply block or remove.

Beware though, they’ll still try to find you.

The Influencer A very small percentage of users would fall into this profile category. They create high quality content and are happy to share their knowledge with everyone.

They’re passionate about what they do and its obvious they’re motivated by seeing others succeed.

The Early Adopter These individuals are the type who’ve been on social media before everyone else. They had a Facebook profile first or were one of the first to embrace Instagram. In my experience, they also love to remind folk of this.

The Black Booker This one is a more interesting category, as the individual will use the platform to connect themselves with others to improve their business prospects or personal wellbeing. There’s no malice here, just a need to connect with people and interact positively.

The Family Person Literally this user is only here because it gives them a way to better connect with family who may be based in different parts of the country or world.

Understanding what type of user you are, and the different personalities that you aim to connect and interact with on social media, can really help to grow your horizons and ensure you’re engaging with the right people in the appropriate manner.

We can use social media to promote what we do and target great content to wider audiences. Many manufacturers utilise social media daily and they should form part of your following so you can ‘tag’ them in on posts. Very often they’ll share the message to their crowd of followers, which is known as ‘synergy’ or 'sharpening the sword'.

One of the problems that seems to be quite specific to our electrical industry is the issue around opinions, or as some like to call it: ‘engineering judgement’. What we have to accept here is that people's

levels of experience are different and the things they’ve seen and learnt mean the decisions they make are focussed around THEIR experience, NOT YOURS. It definitely feels like a lot more time is wasted on the argument rather than understanding the reasons for the debate.

Let me give you an example I’ve seen recently: Spark 1: “I bond everything because that’s what I was trained to do. EEBADS and all that mate.”

Spark 2: “You’re wrong, you need to understand that in the new world of electrics, bonding extraneous parts of the installation may cause issues when ‘prosumer’ installations come around. So EEBADS isn’t safe in every situation.”

When I read this conversation, the first thought in my head was all about Spark 1 and the potential customers he/she has worked for over the years who may see this. Spark 2 has (deliberately or not) instilled a question mark over Spark 1’s competence for no other reason than to show Spark 2 is better/more intelligent than Spark 1. Sometimes having an understanding of and showing compassion towards an individual’s level of skill, experience and knowledge can help both people to grow.

For example, here’s how the conversation could’ve gone instead: Spark 1: “I bond everything because that’s what I was trained to do. EEBADS and all that mate.”

Spark 2: “Ah mate, EEBADS is great (now ADS) and definitely provided the level of safety we’ve looked to offer for years. It might, however, be worth reading up on ‘prosumers’ and self-generated power in domestic dwellings, which is soon to come into force. In the near future, bonding is going to need more thought.”

As you can see, a subtle change in the

wording of the response can make a big difference.

We’re fortunate to have a mass of great content available to us all and we’re also seeing some of the leading organisations and bodies interacting more with the outside world.

Through social media, we have an amazing opportunity to grow ourselves and our businesses.

You should, however, always remember to use it responsibly and never forget that your words can impact an individual in a far greater way than you ever imagined.

CODEBREAKERS PAUL TIPTON: THIS CABLE DAMAGE IS THE RESULT OF A FAMILY OF SQUIRRELS GETTING INTO A LOFT SPACE! The threat from vermin damage of any kind is always a problem. As winter approaches, a squirrel's natural habitat will become more scarce, with less tree cover for dens, food, etc.

With cold weather snaps, the warmth and comfort of a modern insulated loft can be almost irresistible for a squirrel looking for a place to stay. As squirrels aren't confined to rural areas, expect to see this kind of damage anywhere.

When inspecting lofts, under floors, outbuildings, or external locations, great care should always be taken before accessing and potentially coming into contact with live exposed damaged cables.

If there are exterior signs that squirrels and other vermin are present (damage to facias, etc.), take extra precautions to keep yourself safe. Remember that it's not only squirrels that have a taste for electrical installation wiring; rats and mice are also happy to help with the removal of insulation.

Along with the risk of electric shock in these cases, the inspector must also be aware and take precautions from the diseases carried by these kinds of vermin such as, but not restricted to, the following:

Lyme disease Salmonellosis Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease) Tularemia If you've worked in an area that obviously has had vermin present, it's good practice to wash your hands before diving into your sandwich box.

From an electrical perspective, the observations are pretty straight forward.

Where vermin damage can be expected, careful choice of the wiring system to limit or deter vermin should always be considered.

Where damage has been found, especially in extreme cases such as this one, the potential for fire can be high, as well as an increasing danger due to access to live parts. The use of metal/plastic conduit systems, trunking, and armoured cables are all useful in protecting against vermin but not always practicable, especially in domestic scenarios.

After repairs are carried out, the installation of Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) could disconnect the circuit before any future damage could initiate a fire risk. AFDDs, however, won't remove the vermin, so a call to a reputable pest controller would also be a good idea for the client.

ROBERT LAMBERT: WHILST UNDERTAKING AN EICR I CAME ACROSS A BROKEN FUSE CARRIER AND THIS NOVEL WAY OF USING THE LIVE CABLE TO SECURE THE SEAL. I CALLED THE DNO WHO WERE UNIMPRESSED AND A NEW CUT-OUT WAS INSTALLED. It's always difficult to code a cut-out fuse; the requirements of BS 7671 are to inspect only and pass comment or code accordingly.

The problem we face is that the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) use a different coding system to BS 7671, which is more complex and descriptive. Codebreakers has a selection of these for reference.

Where the inspector encounters something that they don't feel is correct and needs to contact a DNO, it's always best to try and use the DNO coding system if possible, as this helps to relay the findings and potential risk to them in a way they can act promptly.

Given this isn't the client's equipment, and there is no way of knowing what an individual DNO will do or what their timescales are, we can only code this for further investigation.

Although we know it's not acceptable and obviously has potential for risk, this equipment isn't ours to touch without permission from the DNO, so we legally have to inform them and allow them to undertake any repairs in their own way. As long as the inspector highlights any prospective defects, that's all that is required with regards to DNO equipment.

The inspector has stated that the fuse carrier is damaged, but we can't see if this gives access to live parts, and the tape seems to have been used as a temporary repair. This should never be done, and any damage must always be reported to a DNO. Working on damaged DNO equipment – even taping it up – can result in severe injury.

Remember, an FI code is still an unsatisfactory outcome and will need to be evaluated and corrected if necessary.

SCOTTISH FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS: HOW DO THEY WORK? Andy Greenhorn, FireAngel’s Specification Manager for Scotland & Ireland, advises how contractors can support clients in achieving efficient and cost-effective compliance with the updated Scottish Tolerable Standard.

What types of housing will be affected by the new standard?

The latest regulations will affect all households across Scotland, including new build developments and existing dwellings.

This includes both private and rented properties, which must comply with the new standard by February 2021. An extension for the deadline to be moved to February 2022 is currently being reviewed by the Scottish government.

Please explain the requirements of the new standard The updated Scottish Tolerable Standard requires all properties to have an interlinked fire and smoke alarm system. This must be supported by adequate carbon monoxide (CO) protection if there is a flue-burning appliance or flue present within the property. Any existing alarms must also be reviewed under the new guidance to ensure they meet the revised criteria.

How many alarms will be required per property to achieve compliance?

In order to achieve compliance, a property must have one smoke alarm installed in the room most frequently used for general living purposes, such as the living room.

An additional smoke alarm must also be fitted in every circulation space on each storey, including hallways and landings, while a heat alarm should be installed in each kitchen. To comply with the latest regulations, all smoke and heat

alarms should be ceiling mounted, long-life and interlinked.

Finally, a CO alarm must be installed in every room where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance, such as a boiler, fire or stove.

What type of alarms should you specify to facilitate interlinking?

Under the new regulations, both mains-powered or 10-year sealed long-life lithium battery powered alarms are suitable, as long as they facilitate either hardwired or wireless interlinking. To remain in line with the latest Scottish Regulations the mains-powered alarms must comply with a Grade D1 Specification, while the battery powered alarms must meet the requirements of a Grade F1 Specification.

Why is this new standard being enforced?

The improved legislation outlined within the Housing (Scotland Act) and Scottish Housing Quality Standard is being enforced in response to the Grenfell Tower fire to help reduce deaths in household fires. It aims to provide individuals living within all types of properties with an increased level of protection.

HOT TUB INSTALLS: HOW TO STAY OUT OF HOT WATER Paul Chaffers, NAPIT’s Technical Events Manager, offers advice on hot tub installations and what's required to comply with the Regulations so that you can provide a safe, practical installation.

BS 7671 Requirements BS 7671 doesn't have any specific requirements for hot tub installations (unless it’s a commercial type of tub, like those located in a swimming pool or leisure centre).

Electricians will, therefore, need to use engineering judgement and apply the general requirements of the Wiring Regulations when designing the installation. In some cases, comparisons can be made with BS 7671 Part 7 special installations or locations.

Where hot tubs are located inside a room, Section 701, “Locations containing a bath or shower”, could be consulted, as this is the nearest parallel. For commercial hot tubs or tubs of a permanent construction built into the ground, Section 702, “Swimming pools and other basins”, should be consulted.

Within the scope of Section 702, it

states that some pools are designed within the scope of an equipment standard and are outside the scope of Section 702.

Where there is any doubt, Section 702 for swimming pools could be used as a basis for a safe design. Hot tubs will either be the 'plug-and-play' type, fitted with a standard BS 1363 13 A plug (as is illustrated in Fig 1), or will require a 32 A or 40 A supply.

Socket-outlet and/or isolator positioning BS 7671 Fig 702.2 provides zone dimensions for basins above ground level. A representation of this can be seen in Fig 2.

Section 702 permits socket-outlets or switches to be installed in zone 2, providing the supply circuit is protected by one of the following measures:

● SELV ● Electrical separation ● Automatic disconnection of supply (ADS) with 30 mA RCD * Note: see Regulation 702.53 for full requirements.

In most cases, the most popular choice will be Automatic Disconnection of Supply (ADS) using a 30 mA RCD. Where a 13 A socket-outlet is required, it's recommended to only install a single socket-outlet (see Fig 1). This way it will be left sealed and not disturbed, unlike a double, which may provide an opportunity for the customer to use the spare socket close to water.

In order to meet the zone requirements, the socket-outlet or isolator needs to be mounted 2 m away from the

The temporary junction box (JB) shall be weatherproof with stuffing glands used to prevent the cable being pulled out, and also preventing the ingress of water.

The material of the JB should be able to take medium impact in case of any knocks. The lid of the box should be labelled with a caution that the circuit is live if switched on by the isolator.

This way every effort has been made to minimise any accidents occurring (remember, in most cases the hot tub installer will only have limited electrical skills). It may be worth a note on the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) that the final connection of the hot tub has been made by others.

Isolation requirements Different earthing systems require different measures to be taken regarding isolation, however, by installing either a socket-outlet or rotary isolator, no further action is required because all live conductors can easily be switched or disconnected.

By installing the switchgear adjacent to the hot tub, as illustrated in Fig 1 and Fig 3, the requirements of Regulation 132.15.201 have been met regarding an effective means of isolation.

Manufacturers’ instructions Most manufacturers will have data sheets so that the design current can be obtained ready for the cable design. They may also specify requirements, such as type of socket or cable tail length needed, etc.

BS 7671 Regulation 510.3 requires equipment to be selected and erected in accordance with the Regulations but also enforces the importance of taking manufacturers’ instructions into account.

Conclusion Hopefully this article shows that hot tubs are nothing special and no different to any other type of equipment. It’s the presence of water that worries most, however, you wouldn’t think twice about installing an electric shower, would you?

It sounds like you may possibly have harmonics being generated in the system. These are produced by non-linear loads like variable speed drives, computers and LED lighting systems, all of which are becoming increasingly common. HARNESS THE POWER OF ONLINE LEARNING

T

echnology has transformed the way we learn – from online classes during lockdown to ‘how to’ videos spanning every imaginable topic.

However, for people wanting to get into the building services engineering sector or those already working within the sector but looking to upskill, learning from non-credible sources is a real risk.

Striking a balance In my opinion, online learning doesn’t drive down the quality of teaching or the ability to learn, it instead provides versatility to the sector. Every individual learns differently, so using digital technology as a means of learning provides a greater level of flexibility – allowing individuals to learn at their own pace and at a time that is convenient to them. Although technology hasn’t compromised the traditional values in our sector, we still have some way to go to catch up, and I know first-hand how difficult this is to do.

With my background as a Chartered Accountant and within the financial training sector, I’ve come from an industry that had to change significantly. I

remember back to the time when you originally wanted to become a qualified Chartered Accountant – the process involved you going into a classroom and learning with a calculator and pen/paper.

Nowadays, thanks to advances in technology, large firms can run simultaneous classrooms in 72 countries around the world at the same time.

However, wherever there is change there are challenges.

Whichever sector you’re in, there’s always going to take a degree of persuasion and convincing when it comes

to setting out modern changes – there’s a cultural challenge, whereby you need to adapt without undermining a sector that’s been doing it successfully in a particular way for decades.

Championing credible sources YouTube and social media are great platforms for individuals to generate their own content – you only need to type ‘how to’ into Google to see the plethora of videos that are available.

But, despite these ‘how to’ videos being a fantastic source for some basic electrical jobs, there are challenges when it comes to monitoring consistency and safe practice that can be associated with this type of content. So, how do practicing and would-be electricians know where to turn?

Trusted sources and providers should be the go-to, which in turn will provide greater confidence to both the sector and the market. For example, the videos and content produced by JTL are in association with the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA), so you can be assured that the content has been created using the correct approach, appropriate equipment, and is health and safety compliant.

SURGE PROTECTION FOR ESS:

CURRENT TRENDS

As demand for electricity becomes ever greater, the need to store energy (as well as produce it) also does. Like all electrical installations, energy storage systems need application-specific protection. Switchtec’s Technical Director, Jeremy Lester explains why.

E

nergy Storage Systems (ESS) are now a mature technology.

ESS is installed at sites to improve energy management control, such as peak management or frequency regulation, or for renewable energy storage for photovoltaic or wind generated energy applications.

The importance of such equipment makes interruption of their service unacceptable, so measures must be taken to limit damage due to external influences.

One of the risks to be taken into account is possible damage due to transient overvoltages generated by lightning or by switching operations.

The deployment of ESS has demonstrated the limited robustness of these equipments, including battery systems. Specialists in this technology have ascertained that their low impulse voltage withstand (Uw) may lead to critical system failure.

Surge protector for ESS Surge Protection Device (SPD) technology is widely used in AC power networks to protect equipment connected to them against transient overvoltages. Test standards (IEC61643-11), and selection and installation guides (IEC61643-12, IEC60364-5-534) have been in existance for many years. They define reliable products as well as their selection and implementation.

However, regarding DC power networks, neither standardisation is available at the time of writing. In fact, the standards for surge protection for DC power are ongoing at international level (IEC). It is, however, expected that by the end of 2021 that the following standards will be in place: ●

IEC61643-41: Test methods for surge protection for DC low voltage powerlines

●

IEC61643-42: Selection and installation of surge protection for DC low voltage powerlines

This forthcoming standard IEC61643-41 will be extrapolated from existing standards of surge protection devices for AC networks (IEC61643-11) and the sizing parameters (In, Uc, Imax, Up…) and test procedures will be similar because they will be grouped in a new document, common to the two documents.

The IEC 61643 series is moving towards a new philosophy. A new document (IEC61643-01) will gather all the definitions and tests common to the various applications of SPDs (AC power, PV power, Dataline, DC power) and the dedicated standards (IEC61643-11, IEC6163-21, IEC61643-31, and forthcoming IEC61643-41) will focus only on the specific tests for the application.

Regarding safety tests that simulate the end of life of the SPD – such as thermal

runaway or short circuit behaviour – the procedures are similar as well as the necessary means to achieve requirements, namely the use of internal disconnectors to withstand the thermal runaway tests, and associated fuses to withstand short-circuit tests.

The current situation Regarding the obligation of protection against transient overvoltage for ESS equipment, the current standard for electrical installation IEC60364 doesn’t give information, requirement or recommendation on this point.

The reason for this is because IEC60364 addresses only low voltage installations connected in AC power applications (not DC current), and it enforces protection requirements against surge voltages solely at the entrance to the outside network. This isn’t the case for the localisation of the DC part of ESS. Transient overvoltages Specialists in ESS equipment have noted a reduced robustness in impulse overvoltage of these equipments – particularly in battery systems – and due to the imperative need for continuity of service they recommend the use of surge protectors at their terminals. Surge protection on the AC part is also recommended.

For the following reasons and consequences, the critical point is the

protection of the battery storage system. When the maximum DC operating voltage is very high (1,000 Vdc and more), in such cases a specific SPD is necessary, it being compatible with these voltages and in conformity with the future IEC61643-41. In cases of potentially extremely high short circuit current (100kA and more), the surge protector must withstand the short-circuit test being associated with a fuse sized accordingly.

To manage the short-circuit test, it is imperative that the surge protector is used with an external fuse. The fuse must be rated high enough to conduct 5kA at 8/20μs impulse current without opening, but rated low enough to protect the surge protector during its failure on the short-circuit test.

Regarding the breaking capacity, this is the likely short-circuit current calculated at the time of installation. Provided by the surge protection manufacturer, these requirements can make fuse rating selection somewhat difficult in the case of very high power DC installations.

Existing upstream fuse It could be considered to use the existing AC power SPD overload

protection fuse upstream (see figure 1 fuses in the diagram, top left) as protection of the SPD. This is only possible if its rating is equal to or less than the value declared by the manufacturer of the SPD. For high power installations, the figure 1 fuses have very high ratings, making this option a non-starter.

ESS surge protector selection In conclusion, the key criteria for the selection of DC SPDs, extrapolated from AC standards is: Type 2 Surge Protector (no proven risk of direct lightning discharge) Uc (max. operating voltage) is greater than Umax of the DC network + 10% In (Nominal discharge current) is greater than 5kA Isccr (admissible short-circuit current) with associated fuse is greater than Icc at the installation point.

I'm after an energy-efficient lighting solution for a primary school maintenance project, with the establishment in question preferring 'batten' style fittings throughout. Do you have any options in OVIA's portfolio that could cater to this requirement?

FIRE TRAINING DEMAND HOTS UP FOR ZzEUS Zzeus Training, the dedicated bespoke fire alarm technician training and examination centre, is going through a significant growth period as demand for upskilling of electricians and fire system technicians continues to rise.

CAN I SEE SOME PROOF? Paul Dawson, Niglon’s Commercial Director, explains why he's calling on the electrical industry to interrogate claims of product quality further, and why reputable manufacturers will always prove their worth.

W

hen electrical components are being made and sold, they're ultimately going to be installed within homes and businesses. The people who live in, work in or visit those buildings are trusting that those products are safe, and rightfully so. Yet, worryingly, at Niglon we're seeing that some of those people are being left vulnerable because of untested components.

The consequences are terrible should one of these products fail – right up to and including the risk of mass fatalities. We've already sadly seen the impact of electrical equipment failure in recent times with the Grenfell Tower fire which tragically claimed the life of 72 people and was deemed likely by experts to have started due to faulty wiring in an appliance.

For this reason it’s all the more concerning that we're seeing a number of circuit protection products being sold

which haven't been independently tested by a reputable third party. And that’s why we're calling on the entire industry to take responsibility for the safety of end users!

A whole market message It's vitally important that all elements of the electrical supply chain – from suppliers and wholesalers to electrical contractors and installers – don't just assume that the onus is on the manufacturer. Every single individual involved in a component’s sale or installation has a legal duty, as well as a moral obligation, when it comes to safety.

And it’s not just about championing third-party independent testing as standard for these important devices; it’s also key to have total transparency around which products have been tested to this standard.

One idea that we believe could be introduced to stimulate this culture change is for it to become standard protocol for proof of certification to be requested EVERY time a new product is sold to a wholesaler or contractor.

Circuit protection devices should be clearly marked, online and in brochures, so the reader knows exactly which organisations/bodies they've been tested by (SEMKO, VDE or TUV, for example) and then proof of that certification should be made available, if requested.

If adopted across the industry, we believe this process would drive

standards up and ensure wholesalers could buy in confidence from suppliers, with this product safety reassurance being passed down the supply chain to contractors and end users.

You can't leave things to chance Let's be clear, this isn't something which can, or should, be left to chance; you have no way of predicting when a substandard is likely to fail, and it should never be a case of doing nothing until something eventually goes wrong – especially when this risk can be eliminated with proper testing.

Individuals and businesses rely on contractors to install electrical devices in their properties, and they place a great deal of trust that those devices are safe.

With so many products out there that still fail to carry third-party certification, it’s surely only a matter of time before there are devastating consequences.

The industry needs to act now to ensure that the process of third-party testing and producing proof of certification becomes a matter of course, rather than the exception to the rule.

ur daily routine has changed considerably during the past several months and humanity has adapted swiftly to protect themselves and others around them.

The few extra minutes to apply your face mask and the regular application of hand sanitiser really does 'save lives' in the fight against COVID-19.

Many individuals working in the electrical industry, including myself, have spent years campaigning to help make our working environment a safer place. As a manufacturer of electrical test equipment, I feel that myself and my colleagues at Di-LOG have a responsibility to the industry to keep critical safety equipment affordable and easily accessible.

Over the past 12 months, Di-LOG has invested well over £30,000 in the product development and marketing of safe isolation test equipment and our message has remained clear throughout: safely isolating all electrical circuits saves lives.

When preparing this piece, I contacted Louise Taggart – an associate of mine, who I've had the pleasure of meeting on several occasions – for her input. Louise should be very familiar to electrical industry professionals after sharing her own tragic circumstances (Michael’s Story) and the tireless work she has undertaken to promote best practice and safety within the electrical industry.

Michael's Story has sadly reinforced just why taking a few extra minutes to implement a safe isolation procedure is so critical for the safety of yourself and others around you.

HSE statistics Although it's difficult to know how many of the following statistics were caused by inadequate safe isolation, in the five years between 2015 and 2020 there were 21 fatalities reported to the HSE under RIDDOR which were caused by contact with electricity. This reduced to one death in the year 19/20, but there has already

been at least one fatality that I'm aware of so far in the year 20/21.

The facts are simple – you're more likely to die if you're involved in an electrical incident than you are in other types of work-related incident. The following extract, taken from the HSE's training brochure, supports this point: "In Great Britain, roughly 2 in every 50 electrical accidents at work result in a fatality, compared with 1 in 500 from other

“DON'T BE AFRAID TO STOP THE JOB” My brother died at a time when safe isolation had been taught to apprentices for the 20 years previous. We’re now 15 years further on, and it breaks our hearts a little more each time we hear of an incident caused because safe isolation isn't being put into practice. Employers should provide the right tools and equipment so their workforce can do their job safely. As an employee, if you’re not being provided with voltage testers, proving units and LOTO kits, simply STOP THE JOB. There is no element of your job that is more important than you arriving home safely to your loved ones at the end of your day's work. My wee brother didn’t make it home to his fiancée. He didn’t get to become an uncle to my two wee boys. He didn’t get to become a dad to children of his own. He died at the age of 26 in an entirely preventable incident. Safe isolation saves lives and stops such heartbreak.

ADD EV TO YOUR CV IN ‘21 The increasing adoption of EVs in the UK presents big opportunities for electrical installers to increase work in this area or diversify into new markets, as Craig Slater, UK Sales Manager at CTEK explains.

ou may have seen in the media that whilst new UK car registrations fell 1.6% year-on-year in October, plug-in electric cars saw a growth rate of 172% for the same period, which is a market share of 12%.

A report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts that EVs will account for 7% of global new-car sales by 2023. With every new EV registration, there's an increased demand for charge points, either as a new domestic installation or as part of a communal charging solution that may need to be extended to cope with additional demand. As more EVs drive on our roads, charging points will be increasingly required at home and in public places.

Most, if not all, EV owners will want to have some sort of charge point installed in their home. Whether they live in a privately owned property or a rented one, they can claim support of up to £350 off the cost of purchasing and installing a home charging point via the government-funded Homecharge Scheme OLEV also offers a separate Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant which can be claimed by any business, charity or public authority and provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing and installing workplace charging points (up to 40 sockets).

Making the move into EV charge point installation, at a time when demand for this type of service continues to rise exponentially, could prove to be a shrewd move for electrical installers.

Clive Hutchinson, electrician and founder of Plug + Go, started installing EV charge points two years ago and hasn’t looked back since. He says: “As EV adoption has increased and the technology continues to develop, I could see the opportunity to grow my business.

“As a relatively early adopter, I’ve been able to build up a reputation locally as a specialist in this field. EV installations are normally straightforward to carry out, as they don’t throw up many unexpected issues once surveyed. We continue to see a steady increase in enquiries, and it’s a growing part of our business.”

Know your stuff When installing EV charging points it’s important to do your homework.

Customers look to installers as the source of knowledge, so it pays to throw yourself in to learning all about charge point manufacturers and their units. At CTEK, for example, we offer the SKILLBASE training programme to educate electricians on our products and how to install them.

Adding EV charge-point installation to your list of services presents some great opportunities for installations, even within your existing customer base. If you’re working on a new build project, you should consider offering EV charging as an additional option.

CONTROLLING INTERESTS Neil Baldwin, Managing Director at ESP, looks at why door entry systems are in high demand throughout the pandemic and beyond.

A

s much of the country is once more facing some sort of lockdown restrictions, efforts continue on all fronts to create safe environments for people to work, shop, dine and keep fit.

With the emphasis on ensuring minimum risk of exposure to the coronavirus, building owners have been following guidelines and implementing ways of restricting access to premises to authorised personnel only. This has resulted in a huge rise in demand for access control systems.

Sales uplift Since the summer of last year we’ve seen a continual and striking uplift in sales across the whole of our access control product category. All types of businesses are seeing the benefits of installing door entry systems to control access to the buildings as a means to help reduce the transmission of the virus. This is evidenced by the fact we’ve had orders for work on hotels, GP surgeries, schools, dentists, office premises and building sites.

As a leading security products supplier, ESP offers a broad range of door entry solutions – from simple

lexibility has always been important in the commercial office sector. Occupiers’ needs change over time and the occupiers themselves can change too, bringing with them new working practices, sectors and hardware that require revised layouts and changes to the electrical fit-out.

Agile work environments The pandemic has escalated the pace of change and highlighted the need to future-proof commercial buildings to enable more agile work environments in the years ahead.

Against this backdrop, the amendment to BS 7671 for the requirements of electrical installations has made it advisory to include dedicated RCD or RCBO protection for each individual workstation, either via the floor box or as part of the under-desk power distribution. This not only makes the fit-out more time-consuming for the electrical contractor, but also potentially less flexible for the building owner/manager and occupier.

That’s why modular under-desk power distribution systems, like CMD’s Rotasoc solution, are becoming such a ‘go to’ product for office fit-outs. Rotasoc offers significant ease of use benefits for incorporating compliant circuit protection installation into flexible,

reconfigurable office layouts.

Due to the amendments to 411.3.3 of BS 7671, which called for socket-outlets up to a rating of 32A to be fitted with RCD to provide additional protection, the required protection from both faults and earth leakage was built into the switchboard, but this presented a risk of outages to all workstations if the supply was tripped at a single desk.

The requirement to install circuit protection specific to each workstation protects against unwanted tripping, which is a benefit to the occupier, but it does mean that any reconfiguration of workstations could be an onerous and time-consuming affair.

Flexible solution A modular under-desk power distribution system, combined with a powertrack installation in the raised access floor, provides the ideal solution for a flexible, plug and play installation that can be installed and reconfigured quickly and easily while delivering individual circuit protection at each workstation, in compliance with wiring regulations requirements.

This can be combined with plug and play RCD units at the floor boxes for areas of the office layout that don’t contain workstations, such as break-out areas and tea/coffee points.

Paul Allen, Sales Manager at CMD, discusses the advantages of a modular approach to circuit protection at the workstation.

The benefits of modular under-desk distribution systems are also being felt in the office retrofit market. Any upgrade or fit-out work within an existing office environment must comply with current regulations, which means that circuit protection for each workstation must be added retrospectively.

For office environments that already have a modular Rotasoc system, this is a straightforward process, requiring the plug and play addition of an RCD or RCBO residual current circuit breaker to the Rotasoc unit.

For offices that don’t have an existing modular system, adding circuit protection can be a time-consuming business, unless the under-desk distribution is upgraded to a modular system.

Tailored options Available for standard earth, clean earth and dual circuit installations, the modular circuit protection units supplied by CMD for use with Rotasoc installations provide a choice of RCD and RCBO protection, enabling the installation to be tailored to the specific environment and risk of residual current, overcurrent, fault and earth leakage.

he enforced lockdown that our country has been under for many months has certainly had both its negatives and positives.

Clearly the downsides have been obvious and don't need much explaining, but a significant upside that I've noticed is that more of my customers have had the chance to assess their existing properties and which elements require an upgrade.

One such customer, an elderly gentleman, got in touch with me to see if I could recommend a new domestic fire alarm system for him post-lockdown. The good news (for both of us) is that I'd not long taken delivery of C-TEC's Hush ActiV Grade C Domestic Fire Alarm Kit (product code: HAK/1) so I suggested that it could fit the bill for his particular needs.

C-TEC has a strong reputation in the fire safety industry and, although I'd not used this particular kit before, I'd read plenty about it beforehand and had full confidence of the C-TEC brand behind it.

The kit, as supplied, comprises 1 x power supply, 1 x central controller, 1 x sounder complete with cover, 1 x smoke detector, 1 x heat detector, 1 x multi-sensor (combined heat/smoke) and 3 x detector diode bases. The psu and controller are each designed to fit on a standard dual socket box and wiring to the single zone is by use of 1mm - 1.5mm triple cable which, following standard commercial fire/evacuation technology practice, is then looped through each unit, including the sounder.

Essentially the method is the same as that used in commercial applications, the main difference being there is only one zone on the HAK/1 kit. The psu is a simple modular unit that provides 24V with an indicator LED, that once installed can be mainly ignored. The controller will then monitor most functions, including end of line terminators for both sounder and detector circuits, any removal of detectors and battery health/life.

The battery is a lithium-ion type which is claimed to last 72 hours, ensuring all functions of the controller remain available during a power outage. In this instance, the controller itself will exhibit a fault condition (both visual and audible), with the ability to silence most fault conditions if necessary. There are four LED indicators on the controller labelled: 'supply', 'fault', 'alarm' and 'hushed', and the two buttons for the operation are labelled 'test' and 'hush'.

To ensure the system offers a good degree of flexibility, different detectors – such as gradient heat and set temperatures – can be used, while various sounders, LED extensions and visual audio devices are also available.

The sounder supplied with this kit has a multitude of tones and frequencies. A dip switch is accessible from the top of the sounder when its cover is off and, with 31 available options, it is able to cover most European, US and southern hemisphere standards.

In operation the system is a simplified version of a commercial fire alarm system but one great feature is there are no codes required for a reset as the 'hush' button will achieve this on its own. If the unit is 'hushed' by the resident after an unwanted alarm such as burnt toast, a timer is activated for 120 seconds. If, after this time, the condition is cleared, it will then return to a reset state and, if not, it will continue with the alarm.

The detector indicators are able to be viewed through 360˚, making detector

identification fairly easy.

The photos supplied with this review show a Hush controller installed in a lobby area, a detector base ready for a heat detector and the sounder unit installed (without cover) outside the bedroom area. The connections for the sounder are different than that of the detector bases, so the cable loop needs assessing prior to installation. The dip switch can be seen, which determines the alarm tone/intensity and flash rate of any visual alarm device (if fitted).

In conclusion I've been really impressed with C-TEC’s Hush ActiV kit and found it very simple to install and set-up for the customer. Something that I hadn't realised prior to the installation was that the kit's use would raise the level of fire protection in my customer’s home (from the typical grade D level to grade C with additional monitoring) which he was thrilled to discover.

The product is built to a high standard and comes with the assurance of a monthly occupant test function and lower future maintenance costs, thanks to the separate detectors and sounders used.

My customer has been particularly fulsome in his praise for the HUSH function, which removes the need to climb on a chair to silence an unwanted alarm and makes clearing fault codes and messages a much simpler process.

My customer commented that he would feel safer with the system installed.

For me, the installer, I have the peace of mind that my customer is protected by a quality system from a reputable manufacturer.

Runpotec XB500 Cable Roller

I

f you're using any sized drums of cable up to 800kg the Runpotec cable roller is the perfect aid.

The compact size of the product allows for easy set-up and the inclusion of rubberised feet ensures the unit works well on uneven surfaces. It has bevelled sides, so if the cable drops from the drum it will continue to reel off, unlike some rollers I've used where the cable can become entangled.

The Runpotec cable roller also benefits from being able to run two coils of cable in one go, by turning the top plate around as a second layer. This second layer is fully adjustable to accommodate different sized coils of cable or flexi conduit packs.

A very useful accessory – the Runpostock – is available separately and will prove essential when you're

using the larger cable drums.

You simply pull the Runpostick through the drum, then tip the drum over to begin reeling the cable off – no more muscle damage as a result of lifting heavy drums.

The inclusion of two rubberised handles makes it easy to carry and transport the unit around.

Although the product is made from robust plastic, I believe that it could further benefit from having its own storage bag or some sort of protection while it's in the back of the van, as I've found that my unit becomes scratched quite easily when its not securely stashed away.

Overall, this is a really well designed product and one that any electrician is likely to find useful.

Unilite CRI-2300 Site light

I

'm a big fan of Unilite’s products and this site lite is no exception. The CRI-2300 boasts super bright LEDs with five staged dimming settings that are useful for different jobs. In confined spaces, for example, you don't need as much light, but in larger work areas that spread of light might need to be bigger, so it's great to have the option to control those settings.

The battery is good for the full working day when you're using the dimmed setting, and will last around two hours in total when used on full brightness.

Additionally, if you're working in a premises with power available the light can be plugged in with the extra long 5m power lead with IP rated connector and you can use it to your heart's content.

The super tough aluminium

construction with rubber surround can withstand most working environments that trades and industries encounter. Another plus point is the stand that the product comes with so you can prop the light up on its own or hook it over things like door frames or metal struts.

Other useful accessories include a super strong magnet (which came with the unit I reviewed) and a tripod.

One really novel way I've found of utilising this product further is that if a client asks to see what different colour temperatures they can choose from for lighting installations, you can actually use the CRI-2300 to give them a demonstration, as it has five different colour temperatures, ranging from 2700K to 6500K.

f you’re anything like me I'm sure you have countless issues with keeping your work van tidy and dirt-free – particularly the seats.

Dirty jobs on quarries, holiday parks or just general bad weather has caused my van seats to get particularly mucky and, although I've managed to clean them in the past with a stain remover, this doesn't stop the issues of the seats getting dirty again.

These made-for-the-trade seat covers from Van Guard should go a long way towards solving that problem.

Having used them for a few months now I can safely say that they've been up to the job. When my seats get dirty I can just wipe the seat covers with a damp cloth and they're as good as new. They also give a professional look and impression to customers, even if you're in an older work vehicle like mine.

The only downside I've found is that because the seat covers are a universal fit, you can't extend the head rest on the seats as this pulls the seat cover out of shape, which can make your seat feel uncomfortable. Forunately I'm not the tallest, so don't need to extend the head rest anyway!

The quantity of core adaptors really depends on the number of core bits within the set (typically five).
