Data demands
A
quick glance through this issue once again reveals a preponderance of references to the ever-growing importance of data in modern merchanting operations. For example, more suppliers have signed up to share standardised product information through Data Yard while we also report on a new AI-enabled platform developed to boost sales and customer engagement in the kitchens & bathrooms category. Similarly, you’ll find deliberations on the technology underpinning everything from fleet management software, more efficient stock control processes and even the ‘connected energy ecosystems’ discussed in an insightful feature from Ian Brookes, Head of Merchant Sales at Viessmann Climate Solutions (pages 16-17). In short, effective data is now an essential component of today’s trading environment. The topic is central to STARK’s latest Sustainability Market Outlook report, entitled From Sustainability Ambition to Market Access: How the Building Materials Market is Changing (page 10), which considers how requirements for product climate data and environmental documentation are “moving from a specialist requirement in selected projects to a market standard across the construction industry.” It is a transition the group says is both “creating new requirements and new roles for suppliers, distributors and tradespeople…” and becoming an “important prerequisite for market access,” as comprehensive and verified product data is insisted upon ahead of specification, influencing who customers chose to employ or work with on any given project. The report assesses that the share of

The document notes that 40% of SMEs are concerned about increasing compliance requirements, while 65% “already seek guidance on sustainability and documentation requirements from their building materials distributor.” Equally, while the report’s focus is self-evidently concerned with what it terms ‘future-fit building materials,’ this is not the somewhat niche ‘green’ products of old but a condition “expected to become a baseline requirement across the building materials market.” Overall, the findings contend that merchants need to redefine the role they play at the heart of the supply chain, becoming “not only suppliers of physical products, but also of data.” As STARK Group’s Louise Askær-Hune deftly summarises: “The companies that can turn data, documentation and guidance into simple and value-adding solutions for

customers will be best positioned in the market of the future.” The broader point, therefore, is the sector’s necessary evolution from trusted local stockholders into something more akin to ‘information-rich, integrated supply chain partner.’ I don’t like sounding as though I’ve swallowed a corporate marketing handbook, but can you actually remember the last time anyone described a merchant’s core raison d'être as simply ‘breaking bulk’…? It’s a different world now. The language has changed, just as customer expectations have changed. Accordingly, the offer also has to change… That still means service, availability and reliability. But evolution is the imperative, especially in a challenging market and one where customers have more alternatives, including online specialists and the ‘convenience store’ formats offered by the likes of Screwfix. There is less margin for error. In all senses. Customers want to know what you hold in stock before they call in, not when they arrive. They want to know precisely when you can deliver materials, not just that you can in theory. Similarly, you need to know who your customer is — what are they buying, and how often. And how can they be targeted to spend more. And that brings us right back to data…

MORE MOMENTUM FOR DATA YARD AS LEADING SUPPLIERS SIGN UP
Data developments The Pallet LOOP has announced that Lime Green, a leading UK manufacturer of lime products and natural insulation systems, has signed up to use its distinctive green pallets, supporting the recovery, repair and reuse of pallets across the construction supply chain. More than three million LOOP pallets have now been issued, and the supplier joins the likes of Keepmoat, British Gypsum, Isover and CEMEX in the initiative. It also follows the recent news that The Pallet LOOP has returned more than £1.5million to the construction sector (with £8 million still available to be claimed) through its pallet PayBack scheme over its first two years of operation. James Ayres, Co-founder and Operations Director at Lime Green, said: “Sustainability is central to the way we develop our products and how we want our business to operate. Working with The Pallet LOOP gives us a practical way to reduce avoidable pallet waste while making it easier and more rewarding for our customers to return pallets.”

Keylite Roof Windows and Setcrete are two of the latest manufacturers to be listed on Data Yard, the builders’ merchant industry’s centralised product data exchange platform, which simplifies access to key product data in a standardised, consistent format. Developed through collaboration between the BMF and NMBS, Data Yard provides a single source of manufacturer-verified product information from over 140 supplier members to simplify product selection, improve efficiency and satisfy increasing demands for compliance, transparency, and traceability. The centralised platform enables manufacturers to publish product data once, in a standardised and structured format that allows authorised merchants and buying group partners to access consistent, validated information without the need for multiple bespoke templates or duplicate data requests. Data Yard also integrates with ERP systems, e-commerce platforms and catalogue management, reducing manual data entry and the risk of error. This helps improve product listings, reduce customer queries and returns, and enhance online sales performance. Ross Telford, Head of Marketing at Keylite, said: “We’re delighted to launch Keylite’s PIM data onto the Data Yard platform. The data
covers product descriptions, features and imagery, giving customers everything required for a full e-commerce listing of Keylite products on their own website platforms. “We’ve seen increasing requests for richer product data, and standardisation of information is key in the construction industry with the diverse range of products available. This partnership makes it far easier for our partners to access what they need, when they need it.” For Setcrete, National Sales Manager Michael Hoe commented: “The platform hosts a comprehensive range of information, including product specifications, packaging dimensions, technical data, imagery and video content (and) we will continue to review and enhance our product data, as new content becomes available.” Data Yard MD Gareth Thomas added: “Having leading product manufacturers integrated into our platform affirms the benefits and importance of a centralised online platform of product data that is readily accessible to merchants and buying groups to simplify and streamline their product data acquisition and processing.”
Haulage solutions Specialist Driver Resourcing’s (SDR) sister company, Building Materials Logistics reports it is “already enjoying rapid growth” following its initial launch earlier this year. Sitting alongside SDR, a specialist provider of temporary drivers to builders’ merchants and building materials suppliers, BML gives merchants access to a combined vehicle and driver service, supporting businesses with both short-term requirements and longerterm transport needs. Responding to growing demand from merchants and manufacturers for a more complete logistics solution, BML is currently operating in South-East England to offer a service to all builders’, timber and plumbing merchants within a 100-mile geographical radius of Southampton and north to Reading,
Berkshire. This will continue to expand steadily until the business “operates right across mainland UK alongside SDR.” CEO Simon Pritchard said: “Through BML we can supply haulage solutions to merchants whenever they’re needed, giving merchants a complete transport solution to make sure that they’re tight delivery schedules can always be met.”

LIGHTHOUSE CHARITY LAUNCHES URGENT APPEAL TO SUPPORT CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN CRISIS
“A lifeline under pressure” For 70 years the Lighthouse Charity has been delivering life changing and life saving support to the construction community, but it is now facing “one of the toughest years in its history as demand for their services reaches record levels.” As we approach the busiest and most challenging quarter of the year, the charity has launched an urgent appeal to raise £200,000 to ensure it can continue to meet the increased demand for their services. So far this year the number of families reaching out for financial, emotional and physical wellbeing support has increased by a staggering 51%. Food deliveries are up 65% and the charity has funded over 7,000 counselling sessions, providing immediate support to those who are struggling. The resources required to meet this unprecedented demand are under pressure as the construction industry and those within it continue to face huge challenges, with the charity estimating it needs an additional £200,000 to ensure its impactful services are maintained. CEO Sarah Bolton said: “The demand for all areas of support continues to grow. Every day our team are hearing firsthand about the incredible pressures people are under; workers who are unable to cover the cost of even basic necessities, travel costs and people who are trying to cope
with caring for sick children and relatives. “We’re receiving calls from people who are in full-time work but still can’t afford to feed their family, as well as paying for increased fuel, housing and energy costs. It’s a perfect storm and we need to act now.” Sarah continued: “We need the support of the industry to ensure that we can continue to deliver our vital services. To achieve that, we need to raise £200,000 by Christmas and we’re urging our industry leaders to join together in a unified force to support our community. “This is an urgent appeal from the heart for donations that will help us deliver a life changing and life saving difference to someone today.” Individuals and organisations can donate today via the dedicated Winter Appeal webpage via www.rdr.link/mcf001 which also details how donors’ money is spent and the impact it makes to someone in need.

Supporting sales growth Bushboard has reported double-digit sales growth of 19% for its Omega worktop range following a significant increase in its retail and merchant presence for the first half of this year, with 865 new stand placements secured. The total figure was driven by a 17% increase in uptake of displays for its Omega range and the same increase in adoption of displays for Bushboard’s Options range of “affordably stylish” laminate kitchen worktops. During the period, the company also installed over 280 stands of its aluminium composite splashbacks and 170 stands of its Zenith compact laminate worktops, which are “designed to look, feel and perform like stone at a more affordable price point.” Among those new and reactivated stockists to display products from across the range are Huws Gray, Jewson and JT Dove. National Account Manager David Goode said: “Retailers and merchants only dedicate precious showroom space to products they trust to perform so securing so many new stand placements in a relatively short space of time is a strong vote of confidence from our customers nationwide.”
RDT support “at every step” Supporting those working in the home improvement and home enhancement sector for over 180 years, the Rainy Day Trust has launched a new brand identity and website to mark its evolution from “crisis-only support to being at hand at every step of a working life.” For nearly two centuries, the industry charity has been “the sector’s safety net,” providing crisis grants to people working in DIY retail, builders’ merchants, housewares, garden centres and
potteries when life is at its toughest. That safety net stays firmly in place, but Rainy Day Trust says its evolved mission goes further — preventing hardship, enabling early intervention, and providing vital support when crisis strikes. CEO Anna Skeats said: “Our new brand is a promise; we will be there sooner, at hand from someone’s first day in the sector and at every step after it, helping our people live happier, healthier and more fulfilled lives.
When our people thrive, our industry thrives.” To support its vital work, the Rainy Day Trust is seeking industry support with businesses “to build proactive, ongoing partnerships that matter.” Employers can start the conversation at www.rainydaytrust.org.uk or by emailing anna@rainydaytrust.org.uk.

LAWSONS GROUP DAF XD ELECTRIC TRUCKS Lawsons has taken another major step towards reducing the environmental impact of its fleet with the purchase of two New Generation DAF XD Electric trucks, becoming the first UK merchant to fully purchase the model. Their arrival follows that of seven Ford E-Transit dropsides as the business continues to expand the use of electric vehicles throughout its fleet. The first electric trucks in the merchant’s fleet, the DAF lorries were developed through a collaboration between Lawsons, Ford & Slater DAF and commercial vehicle bodybuilder Massey Truck Engineering, with the vehicles specifically configured to meet the demands of builders’ merchant deliveries. Dan Hearne (pictured), Head of Transport at Lawsons Group, said: “As a business, we’re constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, particularly as we frequently deliver into urban areas close to homes, schools and other built up areas. “We have a responsibility to keep looking for innovative ways to operate more sustainably, and these new vehicles are an important part of that. Our fleet already includes 45 electric forklifts, with more to be introduced, while the majority of our company car fleet is now electric.” The DAFs incorporate a number of specialist features designed around the demands of merchant operations. These include a modified 10-tonne front axle and an onboard crane, powered directly from the truck’s battery, which uses a ‘power-on-demand’ system to minimise overall energy consumption during deliveries. The two vehicles have also been configured for different operating environments. One is designed for longer regional routes, providing the range required for greater stem mileage, while the second has been optimised for deliveries in Central London with a smaller battery capacity that allows for increased payload, alongside a shorter wheelbase to provide improved manoeuvrability in busy urban environments. NU INDEPENDENT WHOLESALERS NMBS MEMBERSHIP PATHWAY
JEWSON ALNWICK BRANCH
Minehead-based Nu Independent Wholesalers first began working with NMBS in 2024. The business has recently become a full member of the buying society after initially joining on an affiliate basis, making it the first business to complete this innovative route into NMBS membership. The merchant was formed in 2019 by gas engineer, James Cox. With the nearest merchant 26 miles away, James spotted a gap in the market and wanted to offer trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts both an alternative and a more local choice. Initially, the business focused on plumbing, heating and electrical products, reflecting James’ professional experience, but it has since diversified to cater for a wider range of building and related needs. Helped by its NMBS affiliation, the business saw strong growth and made major investments back into its operations including relocating to larger premises and the creation of a dedicated bathroom showroom. The showroom has an emphasis on accessible living, reflecting the older demographic of the population of Minehead and the surrounding area. Overall, NU Independent’s journey from affiliate to full NMBS member took just 14 months. James said: “Without doubt becoming an NMBS affiliate made sound commercial sense for Nu Independent. It has given us access to valuable support, expertise and events, as well as a larger pool of suppliers, more quickly and on better terms, than we would have achieved alone. “In fact, it has accelerated our success and enabled us to surpass our own ambitious growth targets by at least two years. I would thoroughly recommend the NMBS affiliate to full member route to other growing or new merchants.”
Jewson has recently opened a purpose-built branch at Lionheart Enterprise Park South in Alnwick, replacing its former site off Wagon Way Road in the Northumberland town. Creating four new jobs, it now offers 7,000 products and materials including an extended range of timber products (stored undercover), a dedicated bathroom selection centre with plumbing specialists on hand, paint-mixing facilities and much more. Amidst a plethora of special offers and other activities, the grand opening saw former footballer Jimmy Bullard and darts champion James Wade hosting sporting challenges and a live Q&A. Branch Manager Malcolm Wootton said: “It was fantastic to officially open the doors to our new Alnwick branch and welcome so many customers, local families and members of the community to celebrate with us. The atmosphere throughout the day was brilliant, with everyone enjoying the activities, meeting our team and taking the opportunity to explore what the new branch has to offer.”

OTFORD BUILDERS MERCHANTS BUSINESS CLOSURE Otford Builders Merchants (OBM), one of Kent’s longestablished independent builders’ merchants, has announced it will cease trading later this year following a prolonged period of challenging market conditions. The closure will result in the loss of 34 jobs. The company has confirmed that it remains fully solvent and will “undertake an orderly wind-down of operations over the coming months.” The decision follows three consecutive years of financial losses and an assessment that current trading conditions make a return to sustainable profitability unlikely in the foreseeable future. Founded by John Sparrow in 1971 to support his property development activities, OBM grew into a respected regional supplier serving builders, contractors, tradespeople and homeowners across Kent and the surrounding area. However, the company says that rising operating costs and a sustained slowdown in construction activity have significantly affected the economics of the business in recent years, adding that “increasing interest rates, regulatory costs, energy prices, employment expenses and business rate increases have all contributed to a prolonged deterioration in profitability across the sector.” In a statement, the company paid tribute to its workforce, customers and suppliers, acknowledging their contribution to OBM’s success over more than five decades of trading.
HUWS GRAY ST HELENS PLANT AND TOOL HIRE Huws Gray has been rolling out its Plant and Tool Hire offering at existing branches across the country, with 88 sites now having this service. The firm also provides tool repair and servicing, with customers able to use their Huws Gray accounts to hire equipment. Selected due to growing local demand, St Helens has become the latest location to offer the service, creating an additional three roles at the branch. The site now provides equipment including brand new 0.8 micro diggers, 1.6-ton Excavators, Hi-Tip Tracked Barrows 1 Ton Dumpers, Bumpa hoists, and Trench Rammer Aluminium towers. CEO Daksh Gupta said: “We are confident that Plant and Tool Hire represents an attractive proposition, representing part of our mission to provide ultimate convenience with everything under one roof for our customers’ building needs. We look forward to continuing the rollout across the country, building on a successful performance in St Helens.”

MARKET MONITOR in association with
Data & documentation In what should be essential information across the building materials sector, STARK Group’s latest Sustainability Market Outlook Report maps how new requirements for product climate data and environmental documentation are expected to change the building materials market towards 2030.
T
his shift, according to the group, is both “creating new requirements and new roles for suppliers, distributors and tradespeople… (as) data and documentation are becoming an increasingly important part of the decisions made across the value chain.” Subtitled From sustainability ambition to market access: How the building materials market is changing, the report reveals that product environmental documentation is “moving from a specialist requirement in selected projects to becoming a market standard across the construction industry.” In turn, this is becoming an important prerequisite for market access as “new requirements for carbon footprint data and environmental documentation mean that the ability to document the environmental performance of products increasingly influences which products are selected for construction projects.” This is changing priorities across the value chain, says STARK, as “suppliers will need to provide more comprehensive and verified product data, while tradespeople and builders will increasingly need to document their material choices.” This gives distributors / merchants a more central role in ensuring customers have access to the documentation, product data and guidance they need to navigate the new requirements. Distributors such as STARK Group are therefore becoming “not only suppliers
of physical products, but also of data.” Louise Askær-Hune, Senior Director Group Sustainability & ESG at STARK Group, said: “The construction industry is facing a significant shift. Data and documentation are becoming an increasingly important part of the decisions made across the value chain. At the same time, we see a strong need to make this new complexity manageable. “The companies that can turn data, documentation and guidance into simple and value-adding solutions for customers will be best positioned in the market of the future.” Accordingly, STARK Group has invested in climate data, digital tools, and training sustainability ambassadors to help customers and suppliers navigate increasing requirements for product data and documentation. Louise explains: “We have been preparing for this development for several years. The report shows that documentation, data and guidance will become an increasingly important competitive factor in the construction industry. This gives us, as a distributor, a new and more central role as a partner helping customers and suppliers navigate increasing requirements.” The development is driven in part by new European legislation, including the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which from
2026 will gradually introduce stricter requirements for environmental data, carbon footprint and documentation for building materials. The Sustainability Market Outlook Report was developed by The Footprint Firm in collaboration with STARK Group and is based on analysis of regulatory developments, market dynamics and trends across Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Austria and the UK.
Key findings
l
l
l
Environmental documentation is becoming a market standard: The share of building materials sold into projects requiring environmental documentation is expected to increase from approximately 14% today to around 40% by 2030. The market is moving towards documented products: Products without verified environmental data are expected to decline from approximately 55% today to around 35% by 2030. At the same time, verified environmental data is expected to become a baseline requirement across the building materials market. Customers need more guidance: 40% of SMEs are concerned about increasing compliance requirements, while 65% already seek guidance on sustainability and documentation requirements from their building materials distributor.

FLEET MANAGEMENT
Forty years on the road From just three vehicles at its inception to the 500+ of today, the FVTH story now spans forty years of collaboration with customers and suppliers; of moving with — and understanding — legislative change; of building relationships and weathering the storms of the market. PBM charts the contract hire and vehicle rental firm’s evolution as it celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
E
stablished in 1986 by two brothers, Jim and Colin Brown, FVTH began with three trucks (one 7½ tonne box, one Transit and one Luton) and started a short-term rental company. House-moving and retail initially made up a large part of the business, working out of their grandfather’s general dealer’s yard in Farnborough where they had been brought up in the vehicle industry. Marketing was a little different then, and Yellow Pages was the place to be — an ad in 1986 got the phone ringing and started the business growing, and that same phone number is still in use today! In 1992 came the first big step of buying a brand-new truck — this time an Iveco box tail-lift — while maintenance was a little different back then too. A good mechanic could often repair a lorry on the side of the road and get it rolling! However, things did change and the brothers quickly realised that they were now in a team game — and getting good and reliable suppliers on board was essential. Looking to the future, FVTH became a founder member of United Rentals, then a new concept in the rental world, and have been partners now for nearly 35 years. The second step was to buy more fleet, and this is when FVTH turned to DAF and the start of a 30-year relationship with Greenhous. The first vehicles were DAFXF95 4x2 — a trusted workhorse built from 1987 to 2005.
12 PBM OCTOBER 2026
And by 1995, the fleet reached the milestone of 100 vehicles. A move into trade customers began the partnerships “that have endured for decades.” On the customer side, this includes PML Seafrigo, Cougar Couriers, CBI, Arun Meats and Around Noon to name a few. On the supplier front, the likes of HIAB, Greenhous, HTC, United Rental Group and more. These are partnerships which have been built over time, allowing a real understanding of needs and requirements, meaning best advice — described by the company as a testament to high standards, experience and knowledge: “When you have strong relationships, then all parties benefit — challenges become smaller, solutions become better.” Expanding to Uxbridge, the Heathrow depot served the airport as well as customers further afield. And over that time, new legislation started to be introduced, particularly around emissions — Euro 3 in 2001 is described as “probably one of the biggest changes for the industry in many years”. “Large increases” in the cost of new trucks was matched with a big incentive for fleets to modernise, and since then, FVTH has navigated Euro 4, the introduction of Digital Tachographs, Euro 5 and Euro 6... Each time, the new legislation appeared to be a difficult choice for fleets — with

unknown elements, speculation about fuel efficiency (“mostly exaggerated”) and questions around residual values after the vehicle had finished its first life. And on top of all that, legislation centred on drivers, maintenance and compliance followed — all making running a fleet more complicated. Indeed, challenges which at the time were just as complex and unsettling as the cleaner fuel debate is now, encompassing moves to electric and other alternative vehicles. Entering the merchant market In the early 2000s, FVTH moved into servicing the builders’ merchant sector and allied fleets. For over 25 years now, these relationships and partnerships have been built with well-known industry companies, such as Lords and Raven Roofing. And for FVTH, developing an “understanding (of) the real needs of an industry ensures that the partnership

with classic livery has been a labour of love, and the stunning vehicle now goes to many shows across the country. With the fleet constantly expanding, it soon reached over 500 vehicles. The firm’s maintenance offer was extended with dedicated facilities at a new depot in Colnbrook and, in more recent months, to an improved, purpose-built facility in nearby Wraysbury. In addition, the introduction of new technology to help fleets be more effective and efficient is now one of the areas that FVTH has embraced with its customers, ensuring that “running a fleet is as simple as possible, utilising data to best effect and working with many technology companies.” Reflecting on reaching its 40th anniversary, the business is described as “strong and still growing” with its enduring partnerships with customers and suppliers alike “built on trust and knowledge.” Moreover, it asserts that its “continual search for solutions and knowledge” will stand it in good stead when it comes to further new legislation and challenges in the market: “There will be difficult times ahead, as indeed there have been throughout the last forty years, but FVTH will weather these with (our) customers and suppliers and come out stronger to work through the next challenge.”
ncreasingly, the merchants that stand out are those whose teams have the confidence and knowledge to support customers with informed advice. And when it comes to roofing, investing in staff training can deliver significant commercial benefits, from increasing basket values to improving customer loyalty. Roofing projects rarely involve a single product. While a customer may arrive looking for roof tiles, a knowledgeable merchant can identify opportunities to recommend the complete roof system, including ridges, eaves tiles, battens, underlay, ventilation products and dry-fix components. This not only helps contractors source everything they need in one visit but also increases sales opportunities and average transaction value for merchants. Upskilling staff also gives them greater confidence to sell and upsell. A basic understanding of roofing terminology, system components and current standards enables teams to have more meaningful conversations with customers. For example, knowing that tiles require mechanical fixing in multiple locations allows staff to identify whether additional clips or accessories are needed. Similarly, understanding the importance of roof ventilation or the differences between dry-fix and traditional mortar-bedded systems can help merchants recommend the right products for the job. Beyond product recommendations, roofing knowledge can enable merchant teams to provide even greater value. Training in estimating and specification support can help staff create fixing specifications or material estimates, strengthening customer relationships while positioning the merchant as a trusted technical partner rather than simply a supplier. To help merchants build this expertise, Marley offers a range of learning and support resources. Online training modules available through My Account cover topics including: • An Introduction to Pitched Roofing • Introduction to Dry Fix • Estimating • Roof Integrated Solar • Maximising Sales with a Full Roof System For businesses looking for more tailored support, Marley also provides in-person product knowledge and estimating training sessions delivered by roofing experts. Alongside training, merchants can also access Marley’s technical tools and Technical Advisory Service, which offers support with roof design, legislation and building regulations via phone or email. In a market where expertise increasingly influences purchasing decisions, investing in roofing knowledge is an investment in stronger sales, better customer service and long-term business growth.

SOLAR ROOFING ACCESSORIES
Flash forward
A
s homeowners and commercial clients push for renewable energy, the roofing and solar trades are turning to merchants for products that make the job faster, cleaner and genuinely watertight. And for builders’ merchants, this shift is a chance to build a reputation as the go-to supplier for solar-ready roofing solutions. “Solar installers need flashing solutions that go in quickly, seal properly and hold up for years,” said Ollie Janes, Managing Director of DEKS Industries EMEA. “at’s exactly what we’ve built our range around.” Indeed, Ollie asserts that DEKS has spent decades refining flashing technology for the roofing and solar trades, and its SolarDek range is intended to “bring that experience together in products designed to solve the problems installers face on site every day.”
A lead alternative “that works harder” According to DEKS, traditional lead flashing is “slow to fit, particularly around solar panels, roof lights and chimney stacks where junctions get complicated.” Its Fast Flash solution was therefore developed as a genuine lead-free alternative, with a self-adhesive backing that “removes much of the fuss from installation.” Built with an aluminium stretchable grid embedded in a polymer rubber compound,
Fast Flash “shapes easily around awkward roof profiles and forms a tight seal in tough weather.” It suits roofs with a minimum pitch of 5° and works with almost every common roofing material. Ollie explained: “Fast Flash was designed with the realities of roofing and solar fitting in mind. Installers get a quicker, cleaner job (and) merchants get a product customers keep coming back for.” It comes in four standard sizes and a choice of colours — black, grey (to match older lead) or anthracite grey (to match new lead) — to give merchants a flexible option to suit different jobs and finishes. Cable management solutions Cable entry points are said to have always been “a solar installation weak spot,” where extra penetrations can mean extra risk of leaks. Built to close that gap, DEKS’ BattleShip multi-cable solar entry solution was developed to give installers a single, robust fixing that creates a watertight seal around multiple cables, cutting down on fitting time while delivering long-term weatherproof performance. As Ollie asserts, it “takes a problem installers have dealt with for years and gives them a proper fix. It’s simple to install, strong and built for the demands of modern solar work.”
“Availability is everything in this trade. Our merchant partners need to know that when a customer walks in asking for a solar flashing solution, it’s there.” www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
Solar installations are no longer a niche request, meaning that the full range of essential components for an efficient and effective installation — such as solar flashings — are increasingly becoming “the next big stock opportunity for merchants.” Stock when it is needed Importantly, the business is keen to state it “understands that merchants can only sell what’s on the shelf.” With strong stock levels and a distribution network “built for reliability,” it works to ensure its flashing range is available exactly when installers need it, not weeks later. “Availability is everything in this trade,” said Ollie. “Our merchant partners need to know that when a customer walks in asking for a solar flashing solution, it's there. at’s what we deliver.” Beyond this, more is on the way too. DEKS is “putting the finishing touches” to SolarDek Slate Flash — a fixing solution built to mount solar arrays onto slate roofs with no slate removal and no pressure on the roof surface. According to Ollie, the early signs “suggest it could change how installers approach slate roofs entirely.” He continued: “is is going to be a genuine game changer for the solar trade. “We’d encourage merchants to get in touch now to make sure they’re first in line to stock it.” n For more information on DEKS full range of solar solutions and support services for merchants, use www.rdr.link/mcf006

CONNECTED ENERGY SYSTEMS
Beyond heat pumps
F
or years, heat pumps have been sold as standalone heating appliances — indeed, as boiler replacements. Increasingly, however, they’re becoming the centrepiece of a much wider home energy system, integrating with solar PV, battery storage, electric vehicle (EV) chargers and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR). That shift has important implications for distributors and merchants. It means product compatibility, technical support and after-sales service are becoming just as important as the price and performance of the heat pump itself.
Energy management An EMS (Energy Management System) is a set of hardware and software tools used to monitor, control, and optimise how a building, factory, or power grid uses energy. It collects real-time data from sensors and meters to track electricity, gas, or water usage and automatically adjusts equipment to lower costs and reduce carbon emissions. Connected heat pumps offer a major advantage in this context. By shifting operation towards periods when electricity is cheaper or when solar generation is
available, they can reduce running costs without compromising comfort. But to do this, the heat pump must be capable of communicating with other technologies throughout the home, to ensure occupant comfort is not compromised. At the same time, customers need systems that can grow and be upgraded over time as budgets allow. A homeowner may begin with a heat pump or solar before later adding battery storage or EV charging. If all those products cannot communicate effectively, much of the potential benefit of dynamic load shifting is lost. Product selection is therefore increasingly about futureproofing, not just meeting today’s heating requirements. Why openness matters All this means interoperability is becoming a key consideration during specification. For merchants, this represents an important evolution in conversations with installers. Meanwhile, manufacturers are responding by developing products that can form the foundation of a wider energy ecosystem. This is the thinking behind Viessmann’s new Vitocal 200-A ie (intelligent energy) monobloc air source heat pump (see images).
“As heat pumps become part of connected home energy management systems, merchants have scope to increasingly position themselves as trusted advisers, helping installers select systems that will remain flexible as homeowners expand their renewable technologies over time.” 16 PBM OCTOBER 2026
Ian Brookes, Head of Merchant Sales at Viessmann Climate Solutions, explores the role of heat pumps as part of a “connected energy ecosystem,” outlining what merchants need to know and how this presents a strong opportunity to grow sales. Built around the company’s One Base Intelligence platform, it can integrate not only with Viessmann products but also with a large number of compatible third-party PV, battery storage, EV charging and ventilation systems. This means customers are not locked into a single technology pathway. Any future additions to their set-up can be incorporated into a single control platform, operated via an app on their phone. Plus, using open logic controllers in this way removes the need for merchants to stock expensive, proprietary external gateways. The launch of the Vitocal 200-A ie plants Viessmann firmly in the mainstream heat pump market, arguably for the first time. With competitive pricing for the growing entry- to mid-market sector and outputs from 4 kW to 12 kW, the range addresses approximately 70-80% of UK residential properties — without sacrificing the engineering quality associated with the Viessmann brand. The growing importance of support As systems become more interconnected, local, trusted technical support inevitably becomes more vital. Products from China or Japan that come with parts only warranties or limited UK engineering resources can create huge admin headaches for distributors when problems arise.

016_PBM_OCT26_Layout 1 15/09/2026 02:27 Page 17
Merchants therefore increasingly need confidence that manufacturers can provide end-to-end technical assistance throughout the product lifecycle, including spare parts, software updates, engineering expertise and an in-house nationwide after-sales fleet of engineers. Manufacturers with established and comprehensive UK after-sales infrastructure are consequently likely to become increasingly attractive partners. Designed for the UK Alongside connectivity, ease of installation remains a critical consideration in the heat pump sector. The Vitocal 200-A ie was therefore developed using feedback from renowned UK heat pump installers. Practical details such as pipe locations, wiring arrangements and installation layouts were refined specifically for British housing. Logistics have also been considered. Unlike many imported products, the outdoor unit fits on a standard Euro pallet, simplifying transportation and handling throughout the distribution chain. Forthcoming proposed mandates is another factor tipping the balance away from East Asia and in favour of European manufacturers. The proposed Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) is expected to limit government grant funding schemes, to ‘Made in EU’ products safeguarding local jobs and supply chains. It introduces controversial low-carbon mandates for public procurement and green subsidies in strategic sectors like steel, automotive, and clean tech to lift manufacturing to 20% of EU GDP by 2035. An opportunity for merchants As heat pumps become part of connected home energy management systems, merchants have scope to increasingly position themselves as trusted advisers, helping installers select systems that will remain flexible as homeowners expand their renewable technologies over time. That means stocking products capable of integrating with wider energy ecosystems, working with manufacturers providing robust UK technical support and understanding how digital connectivity, interoperability and future legislation will shape customer demand. The next generation of heat pumps is no longer simply about heating. It’s about creating a platform for the fully electrified home. Merchants that recognise this shift early will be well placed to support installers as renewable technologies become increasingly interconnected and homeowners seek solutions that deliver value not just today, but for many years to come. n For more information, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf007

APPOINTMENTS SPOTLIGHT
Fresh perspectives Chris Osborn has recently joined independent agency Marketing for Merchants as Commercial Director, moving away from the rather more corporate environs of Kingfisher. Here, Chris discusses how his prior experiences with businesses both large and small alike are shaping his approach to the new role.
“No committee required. Leaving the Kingfisher’s pond…”
B
ack in August, I joined Marketing for Merchants as Commercial Director. Four years ago, I’d never have considered moving from a FTSE 100 to a business you could fit round a dining table, but now I’ve swapped a very large pond for a much smaller one — and it turns out the water’s far nicer here! For those four years at Kingfisher, I was mostly on the Commercial Range Team, analysing sales, building ranges and shaping strategy for some of the biggest names in the trade such as B&Q, Screwfix, Castorama and Brico Dépôt across stores in Europe. I started in building materials before moving onto kitchen sinks and taps for the group, which taught me commercial analysis, range strategy and gave me a decent view of where trade is heading — B&Q rolling Trade Point out further and pushing loyalty harder isn’t just for fun, and Screwfix has been fairly open about its own B2B ambitions too. Whatever you make of either move, it tells you where the big retailers think growth is coming from. It also gave me a close-up view of how AI is actually used in commercial analysis — it’s coming, and it’s exciting, but really useful automated reporting is still some way off, even inside a huge business investing heavily in it. My advice to merchants is not to build anything yourselves. Wait for the affordable, packaged version (your current providers are probably already working on one) and in the meantime give someone in the business room to go and play. Curiosity costs very little, and
AI is already making a difference to individual efficiency. at’s the corporate half of the story, but the other half of my CV looks nothing like my time at Kingfisher. Previously, I’d spent nearly nine years at Supertracker, a small business with no marketing department, no HR department, really no ‘department’ for anything at all, helping to drag it out of paper-based orders and into digital — a CRM system, remote tech support, a real website and social media. What I took from my time at Supertracker is that small businesses don’t have a rulebook for everything, and they

don’t really need one. What they do need is people who just get the job done. at’s real agility, and it’s rare in big business. Corporates love saying ‘agile,’ but in my experience it tends to arrive with more process rather than less, and another approval step tacked on every time. Every new system brings its own set of boxes to sort things into, but the work rarely stays inside one box. It needs someone willing to follow it through, rather than handing it off the moment it stops being their department’s problem. So that’s what I’m bringing to Marketing for Merchants: the rigour of a big retail group and the get-it-done instinct of a small one. Mostly, though, I’m just glad to be somewhere the answer to “can you help with this?” is always yes. n For more information on the full range of services provided by Marketing for Merchants, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf008

family behind The Unintended consequences The Walsall Wheelbarrow

arlier in the summer, the acker family, the third generation to lead the family-owned and operated British manufacturer, delivered a clear statement on the “unintended consequences of the Government’s new steel tariff measures and the introduction of CBAM in 2027.” And while some minor details are now currently under further consultation, the implications of the proposed changes could still have a significant unintentional impact on British industry, reducing the viability of domestic production. Here, PBM presents their initial message in full: “For more than 31 years, British manufacturing has been at the heart of everything we do at e Walsall Wheelbarrow Company. We have always believed that successful UK manufacturing depends on long-term investment, skilled local people, strong supplier partnerships and a commitment to making products in Britain rather than simply importing from overseas.
Each year we purchase approximately 2,000 tonnes of steel sheet and coil and a further 2,000 tonnes of steel tube, helping sustain jobs and businesses throughout the UK manufacturing supply chain. Over the last 14 years, we have invested more than £5 million in plant and machinery to improve productivity and modernise operations. In 2025 alone, we invested £500,000 in solar energy to support our Net Zero ambitions while reducing energy costs. We have also upgraded our facilities, invested in new vehicles, introduced an apprentice programme and continued to upskill our workforce without making redundancies through automation. Today, we remain the only company manufacturing complete wheelbarrows in the UK. is means British jobs, British wages, British investment and British tax revenue staying within the UK economy. However, despite this commitment, we are increasingly concerned about the unintended consequences of the Government’s new steel

Like many manufacturers, we are already managing rising employment, energy and operating costs while continuing to invest to remain competitive. ese additional pressures threaten our ability to compete effectively. As a result, we have reluctantly begun exploring overseas sourcing options to help offset the impact of future steel tariffs and CBAM requirements. As the seasons change, merchants need to consider the importance of supporting their trade customers with suitable safety gear ahead of the colder, wetter and typically more challenging winter months.
Fit for purpose W
hile the summer may have been a scorcher, the Met Office predicts strong winds and frequent rainfall heading into the autumn months. Inherently, colder weather can impact workplace safety as rain, ice and snow increase the risk of slippery surfaces, reduced grip and uneven or hidden ground. So, just as millions of school children recently kitted themselves out with new shoes for the September start, it is essential for the building trades to ensure they have the right footwear as winter conditions set in. Peter Lawson, Brand Manager at Overland Shoes — the distributor of Bobcat Safety Footwear, comments: “Although we may have experienced an incredibly hot summer, the changing seasons serve as an important reminder that the UK’s weather remains as unpredictable as ever — and working conditions can change quickly. “As seasons change, so do the demands on your boots so having the right footwear is essential. Autumn and winter bring cold, wet and slippery conditions, so workers need boots that offer reliable protection, comfort and grip. Features such as thermal linings and waterproof materials can help keep feet warm and dry, while slip-resistant soles can provide
22 PBM OCTOBER 2026
improved traction and help reduce the risk of slips and falls on icy or wet surfaces. “Ultimately, the right boots can prevent injuries, enhance performance and help workers remain prepared whatever the winter throws their way.” Key autumn/winter solutions from the Bobcat Safety Footwear range are said to include the Omaha (pictured) and Fargo boots, featuring waterproof construction and
“a traction-focused outsole for all-day performance in even the harshest outdoor conditions.” In addition, and available in Black or a contemporary Honey colourway, the Summit is billed as a durable mid-height safety boot that features enhanced ankle protection and rigidity along with “slip resistance, water resistance and reliable traction.” Stockist support Launched as a new range set on “redefining the mid-market safety footwear sector,” the full Bobcat Safety Footwear brand continues to be taken on by new stockists across the country. The latest names include MacGregor Industrial Supplies (MIS) in North Scotland, while London and South East Bobcat dealership Versatile Equipment has added the brand’s innovative boots and shoes to its customer offering alongside its renowned construction and industrial equipment. Peter Lawson said: “Since introducing the Bobcat Safety Footwear range just months ago, the response has already surpassed our expectations. Clearly, the market has been crying out for a range that combines standout style, all-day comfort and uncompromising protection — and Bobcat delivers on all three at a mid-market price point.

Bobcat Safety Footwear has launched an all-new women’s collection
“Quite simply, there’s nothing else like it today. We encourage any merchants or distributors interested in stocking our products not to delay and to get in touch, we’ll be happy to help.” Women-specific safety wear In response to recent research exposing Britain’s growing trade skills gap, Overland Shoes is also stressing that the importance of purpose-designed PPE in helping to attract more women into the trades must not be overlooked. According to the Skills England Annual Skills Report 2026, demand across the priority economic sector — particularly construction — will grow by 24% in the next decade. To meet this need, the UK will require up to 1.8 million additional workers, all while separate reports continue to highlight that trades including electrical, construction and installation are among those at greatest risk as demand rises and new entrant numbers decline. An obvious solution lies in attracting more women into trade industries, with female representation still inherently low. However, the consensus is that inclusivity is still not as highly prioritised as it should be — with evidence suggesting that unconscious bias and inequality continues to be an issue, not least, according to Overland Shoes, when it comes to PPE. Peter argued: “It may sound simple but the importance of gender-specific PPE in supporting women in the trades cannot be overstated. For too long, the industry has relied on a ‘shrink it and pink it’ approach to women’s workwear, paying little, if any, attention to the significant anatomical differences between men and women. “As a result, many female workers have been left with ill-fitting, uncomfortable PPE that simply isn’t fit for purpose.” He continued: “This outdated approach only reinforces inequality. If we want to build a truly inclusive future workforce, we must first equip it properly. Every worker deserves PPE that fits, protects and enables them to do their job with confidence.” In a bid to help close the gender PPE gap, an all-new Bobcat Safety Footwear women’s collection has been launched. Engineered specifically to deliver the “perfect mix of safety, comfort and style for women across all industries,” the range spans over five distinct design handles and is said to offer “proper fit, proportional safety and enduring comfort.” Offering a “significant opportunity for merchants to both help close the PPE gender gap and tap into a lucrative new revenue stream,” the launch is supported by a national marketing campaign alongside dedicated PoS materials and social media promotion. n For more information on Bobcat Safety Footwear from Overland Shoes, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf010

Maintaining a safety mindset Justin White, MD at WernerCo and Zarges UK
T
he latest Health and Safety Executive figures once again highlight the devastating human cost of falls from height, with the provisional HSE data showing that 31 workers lost their lives following a fall from height during the reporting period. While this represents a decrease from the 35 deaths recorded in 2024/25, such incidents remain the leading cause of fatal workplace accidents and account for around 25% of all workplace fatalities (126 in total) in Great Britain during 2025/26. Furthermore, the statistics reinforce that — despite ongoing improvements across the industry — working at height remains the single biggest cause of fatal workplace accidents.
Following the publication of the latest HSE report into deaths and serious injuries in the workplace, Werner has renewed its call for working at height safety awareness as figures reveal falls are to blame for one-in-four workplace deaths. toolbox talks and digital content, the campaign encourages safer working at height across the construction and trade sectors. Its wider commitment to supporting the industry is said to be evident through “safer product design, technical expertise and practical education,” alongside measures such as its Ladder Safety Hub. Managing Director Justin White explained: “These figures are a stark reminder that, despite all the progress our industry has made, falls from height continue to take far too many lives. One in four workplace fatalities is one in four too many. “The encouraging news is that the vast majority of these incidents are preventable. Safe working at height starts long before
“By choosing the right equipment for the job, following best practice and putting safety first every time, we can continue reducing falls from height and, ultimately, save lives.” For Werner, the latest data reinforces a message it has championed for many years, namely that falls are preventable when safety is treated as a mindset rather than a mere compliance exercise. From selecting the correct access equipment for the task, to inspecting ladders before every use, setting them up correctly and avoiding overreaching, the supplier believes that “the decisions made before leaving the ground can make the difference between a safe day’s work and a life-changing incident.” This philosophy underpins its ongoing commitment to improving safety standards across the industry, for example illustrated by the inaugural April Falls Month campaign it launched this year. Bringing together practical guidance, educational resources,

anyone climbs a ladder. It starts with proper planning, selecting the right equipment, carrying out pre-use inspections and never becoming complacent.” Justin continued: “At Werner, improving safety is a year-round commitment. While April Falls Month helped shine a spotlight on the issue, our focus on raising standards continues every day through product innovation, practical guidance and working alongside the industry to encourage safer behaviours. “Everyone has a role to play in improving safety standards. By choosing the right equipment for the job, following best practice and putting safety first every time, we can continue reducing falls from height and, ultimately, save lives.”
n Werner has announced the launch of a re-
engineered Telescopic Tower with an upgraded design said to offer greater versatility, portability and practicality, in addition to offering a number of safety-conscious features. Compliance Manager Dave Elson said: “As a business, we continually review our products to identify opportunities for improvement. The Telescopic Tower is a popular choice among trade professionals, and these latest refinements make it even safer and easier to use. “The integrated rung bumpers create additional spacing between the rungs, helping to reduce the risk of pinched fingers during setup. While seemingly minor, finger injuries can be painful and disruptive, so this enhancement provides an important additional safety benefit.” Dave continued: “The tower can be erected by one person in as little as three minutes and is available in five platform heights: 1.1m, 1.3m, 1.55m, 1.75m and 2.0m. Designed for quick and simple assembly, it can be adjusted to provide a working height of up to four metres. “Portability is another major advantage. The tower folds down into a compact size, making it easy to transport and store, even in smaller vans.” Additional features include toe boards to help prevent tools and materials from falling, integrated stabiliser bars for enhanced safety and stability, and a five-year guarantee against defects in workmanship and materials.

It comes in a loose fit for easy layering, with multiple pockets inside and out. The Detroit Jacket (103828), meanwhile, has been doing its job for more than 70 years. First introduced in blue denim in 1954 as the ‘Zipper Jacket’, the short, practical design was originally referred to as an ‘Eisenhower jacket’, after the waist-length military style made famous by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Brown duck followed in 1955 and, after decades of different fabrics and linings, the design officially became the Detroit Jacket in 1998. Today’s version keeps the cold out with a blanket-lined body and quilted nylon sleeves, while the corduroy-trimmed collar, full-length front zipper, snap-adjustable cuffs and drop-tail hem “deliver the practical detailing that has helped make it a workwear mainstay.” Then there’s the garment that started the whole Carhartt
Billed as being “always in style, on and off site,” Carhartt has unveiled its new Iconic range. PBM presents a closer look at the collection. story. The Bib Dungarees (102776) trace their roots right back to 1889, when Hamilton Carhartt launched the company with a denim bib overall built for railroad workers. The manufacturer patented its overall design in 1915 and went on to develop versions for everyone from farmers to carpenters, painters and masons, constantly adapting the garment around the people wearing it. More than 135 years later, that same approach continues — today’s Iconic bib has been developed with input from the ‘Carhartt Crew network’ of real-world testers, adding reinforced kick panels, double-layered kneepad pockets and stretch side panels to the heavyweight duck construction without sacrificing the durability that has defined it since day one. The Iconic range also extends across sweatshirts, t-shirts and trousers, for both men and women with the supplier asserting that the range “isn’t about nostalgia; it’s about workwear that has proven itself over decades, brought bang up to date with modern stretch fabrics and fits.” n To view the full Carhartt range, use the

AMBLERS SAFETY RHEON METATARSAL PROTECTION BOOTS
BUNKER VAN STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Amblers Safety, part of Footsure, has launched a new range of metatarsal safety boots to support workers across industries where falling tools, heavy materials and machinery are part of the job. Footsure holds the exclusive rights to use RHEON metatarsal protection within the safetywear category, meaning that Amblers Safety is the first to introduce the advanced material into a commercial safety footwear range. The range introduces “advanced super-polymer protection that delivers high-impact resistance without compromising comfort or flexibility.” Described as being ultra-thin, lightweight and flexible, RHEON remains soft during movement but instantly stiffens on impact, absorbing energy to protect the foot. Three styles are available in the range, with each new boot named after gods associated with protection. Firstly, Empanda (AS360C) is a versatile 6” safety boot with waterproof protection, thermal insulation and reinforced toe and heel durability, said to be ideal for general site work. Salus (AS361C) is an 8” ankle-high boot offering enhanced support and protection for more demanding industrial environments, while Seia (AS362C) is a dealer-style boot with a flexible pull-on design, combining ease of wear with comfort, grip and all-weather protection.
The Draper brand notes that the safety and security of tools remains a huge source of concern for tradespeople, with tool theft from vans a particular issue. Since its launch in 2025, the Bunker Van Storage range has sought to address this issue with tough lockable storage boxes, each with discreet internal holders for Bluetooth trackers. The collection, which was recently awarded ‘Security Product of the Year’, has now been expanded with three ultra secure additions to the range. The latest lines again all feature a discreet built-in holder for an AirTag or similar Bluetooth tracker, and also hold police-backed Secured by Design status and a silver rating by Sold Secure. Available through Draper stockists, the new products include the large Outback box to securely store larger tools and equipment in either the van or as a site box. The tough Tipper box is designed for tipper trucks (and as a site box) and is especially suited for landscaping jobs and storing large equipment such as chain saws and strimmers. Finally, the Slim Slider slimline storage solution “sits perfectly at the side of a van’s sliding door or rear double doors, making tools and equipment easily accessible from its smooth sliding drawer.”

SNICKERS BAND OF BUILDERS The workwear brand has recently announced its new charity partnership with Band of Builders which will see them work together on a range of initiatives designed to raise vital funds and support for construction workers and their families facing challenging circumstances. The supplier will also provide free workwear for hundreds of volunteers as they carry out the charity’s projects across the UK. Ben Stacey, Snickers Workwear’s UK Sales Manager, said: “The construction industry is built on teamwork, resilience and looking out for one another. We are proud to name Band of Builders as our chosen charity and look forward to working together on a range of initiatives that will make a real difference to construction workers and their families.” n For more information, head to www.rdr.link/mcf015
PIONAIR RX-3000 ALL-IN-ONE PAPR SYSTEM Combining TH3 respiratory protection, EN397 head protection and an impact-rated flip-front visor in one compact unit with no waist-mounted blower or hose, the specialist supplier has launched the RX-3000 Hardhat All-in-One PAPR. The compact powered air respiratory protection system is designed to help improve protection against hazardous dusts including respirable crystalline silica, with the launch coming as silica dust exposure is under growing public and regulatory scrutiny, particularly in relation to engineered stone and quartz worktops. Indeed, recent reporting has highlighted severe cases of silicosis among workers cutting and finishing kitchen worktops, while the Health and Safety Executive has strengthened its guidance and enforcement activity around engineered stone dust. The blower, filter and battery are built into the helmet system, giving the wearer one complete unit to put on before starting work. Furthermore, the rear-mounted filter is positioned away from the direct dust path to help reduce filter loading, while three adjustable airflow speeds allow users to balance comfort and airflow during work. The front flip visor can also be lifted when needed without removing the full helmet system. n Discover more about becoming a distributor via www.rdr.link/mcf016

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS When it comes to colour, texture and material choices, homeowners are becoming “more expressive in the way they want their kitchens to look, but most are still balancing individuality with caution and longevity,” according to recent research conducted by Häfele UK. PBM reports.
The perfect blend
O
verall, the data from Häfele UK “shows a shi towards warmer, soer and more natural kitchen styles.” For example, wood and wood-effect cupboard doors have seen the strongest growth, rising from 8% in 2023 to 13% in 2026. Beige, cream and cashmere tones have also increased from 14% to 16%, making them the joint most desired door colours alongside white. Conversely, cooler grey schemes — which have shaped kitchen design for much of the past decade — are shown to be losing ground. Light grey has fallen from 16% to 13%, while dark grey and metallic finishes have also declined.
“Customers may draw inspiration from social media or magazines, but they often need help understanding how colour, finish, worktops, lighting and storage can work together in a kitchen that suits both their home and the length of time they expect to live with it.”
Meanwhile, natural or unfinished wood finishes have increased to 20%, suggesting homeowners are placing “greater value on texture as well as colour.” Granite and granite effect, as well as marble and marble effect, are the joint most desired worktop options at 16%, followed by wood and wood effect at 15%. However, the research also points to a more complicated relationship with colour. More than a third of homeowners (37%) now say they are “brave with colour choices in their kitchen and happy with the result,” up from 17% in 2023. Likewise, almost 40% say they have played safe with colour in the past but would choose something bolder next time. Despite this, in reality, neutral schemes continue to dominate the choices homeowners. Nearly 4 in 10 say they would like a more colourful kitchen but tend to stick with neutrals, while 33% believe colourful kitchens may date quickly. Rachel Tuckey, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Häfele UK, said: “e findings suggest homeowners are not necessarily looking for a dramatic departure from neutral kitchens. Instead, they are seeking ways to introduce more warmth, texture and personality without committing to a scheme that feels difficult to live with over time.” is “cautious approach” is also revealed to be shaping the way many homeowners tackle home improvements. e number who say they use “accessories to keep their kitchen on trend” has risen from 35% in 2023 to 44%, while 51% would consider upgrading part of a kitchen rather than undertaking a full renovation.
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
e findings are part of Häfele UK’s latest Homes for Living report, which explores changing homeowner priorities and what they mean for kitchen retailers, designers and manufacturers. Rachel continued: “Homeowners are becoming more confident in their own tastes and more open to kitchens that feel warmer and more individual, but colour is only part of the story — texture, material, and the overall feel of the space are also an influence. Wood finishes, soer neutrals and more natural surfaces are giving people a way to move beyond the cooler schemes of recent years without feeling they are taking a major design risk.” Significantly, Rachel believes this has an impact on the way homeowners will look to engage with their suppliers as they make their purchasing decisions. She explained: “is makes the consultation process increasingly important. Customers may draw inspiration from social media or magazines, but they oen need help understanding how colour, finish, worktops, lighting and storage can work together in a kitchen that suits both their home and the length of time they expect to live with it.” n For more information on Häfele’s Homes for Living report, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf017

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
Commercial break It has been a busy few months for nuie as the Roxor Group brand launched a new specification-led platform for commercial bathroom projects, in addition to opening its first dedicated, trade-focused showroom in the south. PBM catches up on the latest developments.
B
illed as a “platform that makes product selection easier for commercial and contract bathroom projects,” nuiepro made its debut at this year’s InstallerSHOW. Created as a solution to a familiar sourcing headache often faced by specifiers, contractors and procurement teams, the tool brings together existing products from across the Roxor family of brands — covering ceramics, taps, showering, heating, furniture and accessories — and organises them into ready-made collections built around the specific demands of different project types. The platform caters to the needs of six project environments, grouping together the products best suited to the most common applications that specifiers are asked to quote for: l Student/HMO — hardwearing, spaceconscious solutions for high-turnover, high-use settings l School/hospital — durable, hygienic products built for demanding institutional use l Caravan/lodge — compact, efficient bathroom solutions for smaller footprints l Bars/restaurant — hardwearing products that can handle high footfall l House/apartment — flexible options suited to residential developments

Hotels — stylish, comfortable products for guests, without compromising on durability or ease of maintenance. Furthermore, to support different budgets and finish levels, nuiepro is structured across three specification tiers. Premium offers “dependable, good-value products built for everyday use” while Premium+ provides products with “greater design choice, enhanced finishes and improved durability.” Lastly, Prestige is a higher-spec offering, featuring “products using premium materials, with stronger design detail and a more premium finish.” Sales Director James Abrams said: “We’re always looking at how we can make bathroom specification and installation smarter for the trade, so this is a natural next step in that ambition, giving professionals a clearer route through product selection while helping projects stay consistent, practical and commercially viable.” Significantly, merchants can assist their customers by accessing nuiepro via the existing nuie marketplace platform. The portal also provides details on Roxor’s wider product range in addition to a variety of design tools and render features that support bathroom planning and visualisation. In recent weeks, the business has officially opened its first dedicated trade
showroom in the south following a six-figure investment in a new 800sqm site. The nuie marketplace facility in Waltham Abbey, Essex gives merchants, retailers and trade partners access to more than 70 display bays to showcase the Roxor Group’s full bathroom portfolio, providing a dedicated space for customers to explore the breadth of its product offering in person. Said to have been “created with its trade network front of mind,” partners can visit the showroom with their own clients, using the space to explore products and support specification decisions. For business needs beyond the showroom floor, customers can also book the site’s 30-person boardroom for meetings and project presentations. A spokesperson said: “The showroom makes it easier for customers to explore our brands, compare ranges and see the quality and choice of the collection in person. As our portfolio continues to grow, we want the support around it to grow too. “The showroom strengthens that offer, creating a practical, customer-first resource for trade partners across the south.” n For more information on nuiepro and the Roxor Group, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf018

Feeling flush With research showing that 85% of people have “felt frustrated by a toilet flush not working properly,” Geberit has expanded the range of WCs featuring its innovative TurboFlush technology.
I
ntended to give stockists “access to enhanced flush performance at every price point,” TurboFlush is now available across Geberit’s Aspire and Bathroom Collections, with the move said to mean greater choice for all customer groups irrespective of their budget or design preference. rough the expansion, the manufacturer is urging retailers to ‘focus on the WC system’ — highlighting that the “most important decision in the bathroom is the one people don’t realise they’re making.” is follows research from the company which revealed that 85% of people have felt frustration with a flush that didn’t work properly. Furthermore, only half of people can remember being given information about flush performance when buying a toilet, even though 42% said it was more
important than ‘look and style’ while 39% said more important than colour and 42% said more important than price. Geberit says TurboFlush technology “sets the standard by powering and directing water into the toilet interior to boost performance, minimising cleaning requirements and reducing noise.” It uses what is described as an “asymmetrical inner geometry to guide the flush water in a powerful vortex through the bowl,” ensuring thorough and complete cleaning. As a result, the supplier states it exceeds the flush performance required by international standards by up to ten times and minimises flushing noise. Head of Marketing Sophie Weston said: “We know from our research that flush performance is important to
homeowners, and remains a source of anxiety for some. Yet retailers often ignore the opportunity to promote this feature, focusing on aesthetics instead. “With TurboFlush now available at all price points, we’re giving the opportunity to focus on the flush — providing innovative technology that boosts performance, reduces cleaning effort and delivers a whisper-quiet flush, across all price points.” e technology is now available on 20 designs at all price points across wall-hung and floor-standing designs, including the iCon, Acanto and Geberit ONE ranges (Aspire collection), plus Selnova and Smyle ranges (Bathroom Collection). n For more information, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf020
Panel partners Since becoming the solus UK distribution partner of Fibo Wall Panels last February 2025, PJH reports it has expanded the range “as a result of increasing demand and continued sales growth.”

ear-on-year growth (to July) has seen an impressive 40% increase in sales for the brand, with over 300 SKUs now stocked by PJH in comparison to 225 SKUs when the partnership began. e distributor has collaborated closely with the Fibo team to expand access to the waterproof wall panel systems across its extensive distribution network, enabling merchants, retailers and installers to benefit from “fast, reliable nationwide next-day delivery to store or home,” making the range easier to order, specify and install than ever before. Over the past year, the partnership expanded beyond bathrooms with the introduction of Fibo kitchen wall panels, offering a contemporary collection of splashback designs that complement modern
kitchen interiors. During the spring, PJH added further new wall panel designs to both its Bathrooms to Love and Bathrooms2GO brands, offering customers an even better choice of the latest wall panel designs, profiles and accessories including the popular stone tile-effect bathroom ranges such as Pebble Granite, Arctic Onyx and Rustic Granite. Jenny Gibson, Head of New Business Development at Fibo, commented: “Since PJH became our UK distribution partner in early 2025, the growth we’ve achieved together has been a real testament to what the right partnership can deliver. Expanding into kitchens and introducing our new stone-inspired designs is a direct response to that rising demand for a faster, low-maintenance alternative to tiling.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
Relationships, not transactions Graham Mercer, MD of Glasgow-based bathroom and kitchen surface supplier Rearo, explores why relationship building has never been more important.
U
ntil recently, so we were told, relationships in business were an unnecessary thing of the past. Globalisation meant seeking out the most cost-effective options anywhere in the world and modern methods of communication and logistics would do the rest. At the touch of a computer keyboard, you could do business with anyone, anywhere in the world without ever having to meet them — and it would all be justified as long as the price was right. The supply chain was a cost to be managed, a process to be optimised, all in the name of ‘just-in-time’ efficiency. The approach was not only short-sighted, it was also practically and commercially wrong-headed. While it has taken a global pandemic and a couple of wars to bring the world back to its senses, it has thankfully been confined to the dustbin of history. Indeed, if the last few years have taught us anything, it is human relationships are the foundation upon which a successful manufacturing business is built. Manage those relationships, cultivate them and nurture them, and you can weather any storm. Ignore them, and you risk the integrity of your entire operation, regardless of how impressive your sales figures might look. At Rearo, we have had this lesson reinforced time and time again, most notably as we navigated a world reshaped by geopolitical tensions and a shifting economic landscape. Our experience has led us to a single, fundamental conclusion — a safe, effective supply chain is not simply a logistical pipeline, it is a strategic asset that requires the same
34 PBM OCTOBER 2026
level of care, investment, and relationship management that we afford our most valuable customers. The geopolitical wake-up call Perhaps the most profound realisation came when the world changed in an instant. For years, our core raw material for many of our products was birch plywood sourced from Russia. It was a cost-effective, reliable resource but, when the invasion of Ukraine occurred and sanctions were imposed, we faced not just a logistical challenge, but a profound ethical and strategic dilemma.
“A safe, effective supply chain is not simply a logistical pipeline, it is a strategic asset that requires the same level of care, investment, and relationship management that we afford our most valuable customers.” In seeking the right partner for the future, we looked to the West, forging a deeper, more strategic partnership with Medite Smartply in Ireland. We made a conscious decision to source FSC-certified, exterior grade MDF from sustainably managed forests, a move that aligned with our values and those of our customers.
By shortening our supply route from thousands to a few hundred miles, we achieved several objectives at once — reducing our carbon footprint, enhancing our resource efficiency, and building a more resilient, secure supply chain that is less susceptible to the unpredictable whims of geopolitical disruption. Taking a proactive approach to supply chain management was the first step in ensuring responsible and sustainable growth for our company. We learned an important lesson, that supply chains are fundamentally about relationships, rather than simply transactions to be recorded on an invoice. To ensure stability and a sustainable future, both have to be cultivated, developed, and nurtured. Meeting people face-to-face, forging long-term relationships with them, gaining and reinforcing their trust and respect will always be more important than seeking out the cheapest option. We understand that a safe and effective supply chain is a commercial necessity — a pathway to providing customers with the confidence that we can deliver, not just on price but on reliability, quality and sustainability. n Rearo specialises in the manufacture and supply of bathroom and kitchen surfaces for the UK trade and retail markets with a product range that includes kitchen worktops, splashbacks and upstands, as well as a variety of bathroom wall panel options.

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
Reassurance and reliability Steve Boyer, Chairman of Marsh Industries, tells PBM readers how the business has proactively responded to market demand to deliver a proposition that meets the ever-evolving needs of its customers.
F
or contractors, consultants, specifiers and builders’ merchants, product performance is only part of the equation. Certification, technical support, availability and confidence that equipment will arrive when required are increasingly important considerations. And at Marsh Industries, these needs are shaping the development of our business. As an independent UK manufacturer specialising in off-mains drainage and water management, Marsh has developed a portfolio serving domestic, commercial and civil engineering applications. From sewage treatment and pumping through to hydrocarbon separation and large-capacity engineered systems, our objective is straightforward — to provide technically robust, independently verified solutions, backed by responsive UK manufacturing and knowledgeable support. Indeed, despite volatile trading conditions across the construction sector, Marsh Industries has achieved sales growth of more than 10% over the last 12 months. This reflects our continued investment in products, capacity, people and customer service.
A comprehensive portfolio The Marsh range includes domestic and commercial sewage treatment plants, pump stations, septic tanks, cesspools, attenuation tanks and hydrocarbon separators, in addition to specialist engineered systems for demanding civil engineering applications. Our commercial sewage treatment capability supports projects from smaller developments to substantial installations
36 PBM OCTOBER 2026
where population loading, discharge requirements and site conditions demand an engineered solution. Pump stations are available up to 100,000 litres, designed around project-specific flow, storage, pumping and control requirements. Our separators, meanwhile, provide solutions where protecting the receiving environment from oil contamination is critical. Furthermore, continued product development is addressing emerging requirements including data centres, major infrastructure and high-capacity water storage and treatment applications. Independent certification Beyond all this, third-party certification now matters more than ever. For specifiers, certification provides confidence that declared product performance has been independently assessed rather than simply claimed by the manufacturer. Accordingly, Marsh has made independent testing and third-party certification central to its product development strategy. Across our portfolio we hold an extensive range of BS EN product certification, with products independently tested through third-party test centres. This is particularly important in sewage treatment, where process performance must be demonstrated under controlled conditions, giving consultants, contractors, regulators and end users independently verified information for specification decisions. Our philosophy is that certification must be supported by good engineering, consistent manufacturing
standards and products designed to provide long-term service in demanding underground environments. Delivered at speed One of the biggest challenges facing contractors is increasingly not product selection, but product availability. Civil engineering programmes change rapidly, and extended equipment lead times can affect groundworks, lifting operations, labour and project completion. Marsh has therefore invested significantly in manufacturing capability, production planning and capacity, all with the specific objective of reducing commercial lead times. For many of our commercial sewage treatment plants and separator systems, our target manufacturing lead time is approximately three weeks, subject to specification and production scheduling. And for contractors accustomed to substantially longer lead times from competing systems, this can make a significant difference. We believe manufacturers must recognise that lead time is itself part of the service offered to the construction industry. Our dedicated Sales and Contracts Offices assist with enquiries, quotations, product selection and project requirements, while our 12-person external sales team provides nationwide field support to builders’ merchants, contractors and specifiers alike. This means a merchant branch does not need to become a specialist in sewage treatment, pumping or hydrocarbon separation to develop these opportunities. Marsh provides the technical and commercial expertise behind the branch, helping take an initial enquiry through specification and quotation to order and delivery. This support is complemented by an extensive library of BIM product models, technical literature and specification information, providing consultants and designers with the resources required to incorporate Marsh products into their projects. The objective is not simply to supply a product. It is to help ensure that the correct engineered system reaches site when the contractor needs it. As civil engineering projects become more technically demanding and construction programmes tighter, contractors, merchants and specifiers need manufacturers capable of combining independently verified performance with a low carbon footprint, responsive manufacturing and knowledgeable support. For Marsh Industries, the direction is clear: continue investing in UK manufacturing, expand our independently certified product range, support our builders’ merchant partners, develop solutions for emerging infrastructure markets and reduce the time between specification and delivery. Independent certification provides confidence. Engineering provides the solution. Manufacturing capacity provides availability. Experienced people provide the support to bring them together. n For more information on Marsh Industries’ product range and support services for merchants, use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mcf029

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
Prevention is better than cure Silt from construction sites poses a significant risk to drainage systems, often leading to blockages, flooding and environmental implications which can result in sanctions should watercourses be affected alongside reputational risk to the firms involved. However, according to Wrekin Products’ Technical Specification Manager Paul Thompson, the UK construction sector still needs to take greater responsibility and do more to prevent immediate environmental damage.
I
n a nutshell, silt pollution is the contamination of watercourses by a granular sediment composed of rock and mineral particles. This form of pollution is primarily caused by construction site runoff, as well as natural erosion and agricultural activities. Even minor silt discharge is capable of significant environmental impact, such as reducing oxygen levels in waterways, infiltrating fish spawning grounds and harming aquatic vegetation. In recent years, as environmental awareness has continued to rise, pollution fines have more regularly appeared in damning news headlines. Though many of these headlines have focused on the wrongdoings of water companies, construction sites and housebuilders have not escaped the unwanted limelight. For instance, after several silt pollution incidents between 2022 and 2024, a well-documented case in North Wales late last year led to £150,000 in fines for damage to a tributary of the River Alyn in Wrexham. For construction companies, environmental penalties don’t just carry financial implications and potential project delays. There is also a reputational risk, which will make public sector authorities and communities question whether they trust a guilty party in the future. Tumultuous recent years have caused local authority confidence in the construction sector to yo-yo, but the current UK-wide development ambition means
38 PBM OCTOBER 2026
construction companies must do all they can to ensure they are operating responsibly and can deliver reliably. The message from regulators is clear — prevention is always better than cure. Section A10 of the Design and Construction Guidance (The Code) requires developers to control pollution during construction and prior to adoption. In addition, national sustainable drainage system (SuDS) guidance includes the requirement for drainage networks to maintain water quality and flow, which is not possible where silt pollution is present. There is an expectation that construction companies provide details on planning and control of silt pollution, to prevent foul play and prosecution under the Water Resources Act 1991 or Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975. However, issues persist within the sector. Yet proactive pollution prevention solutions exist, such as silt fences and settlement tanks, but our industry feedback made it clear that something even more simple, yet still effective, was required for temporary use. This led to the development of the Armadillo SiltShield (pictured), which is a retrofittable option comprising only three components — a robust steel silt bucket, a simple-to-install locator plate and a geotextile filter bag. Together, these components provide a reliable system for filtering debris and contaminants before they enter drainage systems, offering a solution which can be used multiple times before being fully recycled at the end of its life cycle.
Sometimes, a bit of innovation is required to simplify complex challenges. Now, it’s up to the construction sector to decide whether environmental damage, regulatory non-compliance, financial penalties and reputation are worth continuing to risk or not. n Wrekin, alongside its subdivision Geoworks, recently opened a brand-new customer experience centre adjacent to its Lichfield headquarters, allowing visitors to see how its wide range of ductile iron, steel and geosynthetic products work in practice, where they add value and showing “where poor choices can cause long-term issues.” MD Simon Turner (pictured at the facility’s official opening with BMF CEO John Newcomb) said: “Although information about our products is easily accessible online, we believe that the Civils Hub offers a unique inperson experience that will benefit professionals in various positions with different responsibilities.”

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
Rain check T
he UK has recently undergone heatwaves in what has now become a well-established annual pattern. Coupled with this is the increase in droughts in many parts of the country. As extreme heat becomes part of UK life, it is vital that those in construction and landscaping projects think first and foremost about water resilience. The way our homes handle water has to evolve. The UK has been used to comparatively cheap, on-demand water piped into our homes to drink, water the garden and clean the car. The assumption many of us have is that, when rainwater runs off rooftops, stormwater drains will provide an adequate exit. The boom-and-bust rainfall patterns we’ve witnessed over the past several years, along with the sealing over of rain absorbing ground to accommodate population growth, has shredded these long-held beliefs. The results of this are that our news is often dominated by macro-level concern around water security, as sewage overflows into watercourses. Construction professionals working on any project involving a landscaping element are encouraged to keep in mind that there were around an average of 800 spill events per day in 2025, moments in which surface water overflowed the infrastructure in place to handle it. If rainwater is sent safely into the environment or its path to the sewer slowed, this will have a beneficial impact on the UK’s sewerage systems, benefit biodiversity and
help reduce the spills that contaminate natural watercourses. Rethinking our approach When we think about our own homes, presumptions of readily available water tend to shape our habits and behaviours. Meanwhile, solutions, knowledge and objectives around rainwater runoff are fragmented across professions, trades and the homeowner’s wish list. Garden water features are designed with little connection to rainwater runoff, and guttering and soakaway capacity is usually specified with the only goal being that rainwater is removed quickly. Homeowners often overlook rainwater management. For example, drainage

Ali Murtaza, Design Services Technician at ACO House & Garden, looks at how rainwater can be managed to help tackle the impact of climate change. components in place to handle patio runoff can sometimes be seen as an unwelcome expense rather than an asset worth investing in. Rethinking our resources The relationship between homes and rainwater needs to be rethought. Water must be properly thought of as a resource to be collected rather than a problem to be disposed of quickly. By adjusting our thinking to see water in this way, we can find solutions that allow homes to work with water instead of against it. This rethinking would see impermeable roofs, patios and driveways as catchment areas that can be used to channel rainwater towards storage for later use. It would also

see channel drains feed rainwater gardens that overflow into soakaways, using drainage design to combine functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. In cases where the site is compact, has heavy soil or a high water table, rainwater may be better slowed by green roofs and rainwater planters prior to its release. Paths and drives can be made permeable by using
gravel or grass embedded in ground reinforcement tiles, which also deliver hardwearing surfaces that are accessible to all, from prams to SUVs. The quality and quantity of water are increasingly important issues for the construction and landscaping sectors, and it’s vital that we shift from an attitude of solving the problem to conserving the resource. Professionals whose projects have a landscaping or drainage element will benefit from learning about the rainwater management solutions available and engaging experts early. At ACO, we have a portfolio of solutions
that support sustainable drainage for projects of all sizes. The Met Office says that the odds of the UK seeing 40°C plus temperatures in the next 12 years is 50-50. We recently saw temperatures close to that in June, and exceeding that in July 2022. Conditions we once labelled extreme have now occurred twice in close succession. It is our responsibility to do what we can to mitigate the impact of such heat waves and conserve water through our projects. n For more on sustainable water management for homes and gardens, visit www.rdr.link/mcf031

R
eputedly one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of External Wall Insulation, render and plaster solutions, the business is rolling out MonoPlus stock while campaign point-ofsale materials are appearing at selected builders’ merchants and specialist render distributors around the country as the company continues to grow its Merchant Partner network. Significantly, the supplier states that the broader strategic aim of the initiative is “not simply to increase distribution, but to create an active merchant network that gives applicators more opportunities to discover MonoPlus, take part in the promotion and engage with Baumit through their local branch.” The campaign is also designed to provide a platform for the company to “strengthen relationships with merchants and applicators and build longer-term engagement with the brand.” Sales Director James Wilson said: “Builders’ merchants are an essential route to market for Baumit UK and are central to our wider growth strategy. That’s why developing a strong Merchant Partner network is so important to us.
“The Finish Faster. Win Bigger. campaign gives our Merchant Partners something more than simply stock on the shelf. By combining strong in-branch visibility with digital promotion, Trade Days and a £15,000 applicator prize campaign, we can help merchants create conversations at the counter while giving applicators a genuine reason to engage with Baumit.” He continued: “While MonoPlus is at the heart of this campaign, we also see it as an opportunity to introduce merchants and applicators to more of the Baumit range, from our External Wall Insulation systems and renders through to paints and finishes. We want that initial engagement with MonoPlus to open the door to a much broader relationship with Baumit. “Our ambition is to build a strong network of active MonoPlus Merchant Partners across the UK and, importantly, to support those partners after they join. Every successful branch strengthens the network and helps us introduce Baumit and our wider range of solutions to more applicators across the UK.”

For the campaign itself, participating merchants are being supported by counter displays, promotional leaflets, QR materials, NFC-enabled counter cubes, branch photography and Trade Day activity — giving merchant teams a strong in-branch story to share with their trade customers. Applicators who purchase MonoPlus from an approved participating merchant can upload their receipt to the campaign platform. Approved receipts earn one Baumit Point for every £1 spent on MonoPlus and unlock a prize-wheel spin, with prizes including Baumit Points, vouchers and prepaid Mastercards. Applicators can also upload examples of their finished MonoPlus work, with “standout content” giving them the chance to compete for the campaign’s larger prizes. Across the campaign, applicators can win prizes from a fund of up to £15,000, including a £5,000 hero prize. The promotion runs until 31 October 2026. n Baumit MonoPlus is described as a specifically formulated through-coloured, one-coat scratch render available in six colours. Designed for new build and renovation projects, it is said to offer a low-maintenance, weather-resistant and durable render solution, with finish options including monocouche, rough cast, wet dash and dry dash.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES ARCTIC HAYES SMART FREEZE CLAMP Arctic Hayes by DiversiTech UK has unveiled what it bills as “a global first in professional plumbing innovation” with the launch of the Smart Freeze Clamp — a connected solution designed to bring unprecedented accuracy, control and confidence to installers looking to isolate pipework on live systems. Building on six decades of pipe freezing expertise, the new solution is said to represent a “significant step forward from traditionally disruptive, costly and messy drain-down methods,” combining the best in precision freeze technology with digital intelligence, via real-time app monitoring and ultrasonic sensing. As a high-margin tool that drives demand amongst increasingly tech savvy trade professionals, and equips the sales team with a clear value story, the supplier states that it will help to open a whole new revenue stream across merchants and their digital channels. At its core is a simple but powerful concept: giving plumbing and heating engineers clear, live feedback on exactly what is happening inside the pipe as it freezes. Using a dedicated and interactive iOS/Android app connected via Bluetooth, the Smart Freeze Clamp provides real-time temperature monitoring, visual countdowns and alerts throughout the freeze cycle, allowing installers to see precisely when an ice plug has formed and when it begins to thaw. Lee Parsons, UK Business Unit Director, explained: “Merchants are excited because this is a true category expanding product. It drives footfall, creates repeat refrigerant sales, and gives installers and plumbers a compelling reason to work smarter and upgrade their toolkit. “With 70% of installers never having tried a pipe freeze product, there’s a huge opportunity to build sales and customer loyalty.”

To be implemented in phases, with larger capacity cylinders (170L+) being delivered first, this removes the need for a separate expansion vessel, reducing installation time and space as well as simplifying the maintenance. Rob Pearse, Residential Business Director at Baxi, said: “We set out to provide installers with a Megaflo that can cater to all budgets and installation requirements while maintaining and refining the renowned Megaflo quality and reliability. Whether engineers need a slimline cylinder for a smaller property, a solution for an air source heat pump or compatibility with solar PV, there’s a Megaflo cylinder designed for exactly that application.” The manufacturer has also optimised its premium offering Megaflo Eco direct and indirect cylinders with the same enhanced internal expansion system.
VELUX MID-PRICE FLAT-ROOF WINDOWS AND GLASS DOMES Expanding its flat roof range with a “visually appealing solution in the mid-price segment,” the roof window manufacturer is offering the base element of an older flat roof window generation with a high-quality glass top element in a robust aluminium design. This makes it possible to achieve high-quality design for roof lights in flat roofs, even outside the premium segment. The new product, launched under the name VELUX Standard Glass Rooflight, is fitted with a flat glass pane as the top element, making it well-suited to use in roofs with a pitch of 2-15°. It is available in both fixed and openable versions, with the latter “standing out in the market” thanks to its standard rain sensor and motor integrated into the frame. TAKE A BREAK My perennial frustrations with international breaks eating into the domestic programme is slightly tempered this year by the fact that the usual two autumn ‘windows’ have been condensed into a single slot. It’s a longer break, but it was the stop-start disruption that really used to get my goat… Anyway, the League is on hold until 10h October, which it gives a helpful moment of reflection to assess things, especially from an FPL perspective! Admittedly, the data isn’t exactly huge, but writing this after just four rounds however it seems clear that Arsenal defence can be once again relied upon and it looks as though Man City’s rebuild should allow them to challenge the Gunners after all (we’ll put the Community Shield showing down to a blip…). We should give a special shout out to Chelsea’s forward line too. Freed from the distraction of European football, Xabi Alonso’s charges look to be deploying their very own tribute to the late Kevin Keegan by playing blistering attacking football, irrespective of the impact on any defensive solidity, with their attacking trio of Joao Pedro, a rested and rejuvenated Cole Palmer plus big money signing Morgan Rogers all in scintillating form.
Down at the bottom, it might not be the forgone conclusion we were expecting of the newly promoted sides being mere whipping boys, as Hull in particular look a tidy unit. The likes of Fulham and Bournemouth have stuttered a little, perhaps feeling the impact a little harder of the widespread managerial changes across the division, but every team pretty much seems capable of beating any of their rivals on any given day — and accordingly, there looks to be a very healthy FPL player pool this year. From the real bargains at Hull to pack your bench (at least) and clearly underpriced essentials like Ezri Konsa now he’s at the Emirates, Odegaard’s form gives you relatively cheap route into the Champions’ attack. Brentford, Leeds and Brighton also all look to present some great value points potential (for example, the solid ‘DefCon’ floor of Sangaré and Muharemovic or the ‘Out of Position’ advantages of De Cuyper…), while the squad overhaul at Newcastle perhaps warrants more attention than previously thought. Even their former star Alexander Isak is showing hints of past glories... In short, there’s plenty of variety to balance the inevitable choice of big hitters like Haaland and Bruno, while the post-internationals momentum will now carry us all the way to the new year.
THE WRONG END? Loved the recent story about goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr — son of former Netherlands defender Ronald — scoring two penalties for Dutch side Telstar to level their league match against Cambuur, the second of which came in the 11th minute of added time. He’d also scored the winner (another pen) in May against FC Volendam to confirm Telstar’s safety from relegation. And while nothing will ever beat Jimmy Glass and his rescue act against Plymouth back in 1999 to keep Carlisle United in the Football League, it’s always fun to see a keeper hit the back of the net — partly because the celebrations are usually ridiculous as noone quite knows how to react! Only six have ever scored in the Premier League with Peter Schmeichel the first, bagging an impressive volley for Villa against Everton in 2001 (incredibly, one of 10 he scored across his career). Brad Friedel also demonstrated a tidy finish for Blackburn against Charlton in 2004 (though his side went on to concede and lose 32) while, most recently, Alisson became the first to score a header
— and net the actual match winner — in Liverpool’s 2-1 success over West Brom in May 2021. The above were all the result of Hail Mary, last-ditch corners while the other three were rather less exciting, fortuitous long clearances — Paul Robinson for Spurs, Stoke’s Asmir Begovic and an especially freakish, windassisted punt from Everton’s Tim Howard (the bounce is CRAZY…). Must be about time for it to happen again!
