viewpoint the bigger picture

You can be excused for wondering what year we are in, let alone what season we are currently experiencing, given the tumultuous events of the past eight months or so, but traditionally the Autumn is an especially hectic time of year for builders. The threat of inclement weather grows ever greater as workable daylight shortens, exacerbating the obvious potential for emergency call-outs, whilst concerned homeowners are demanding a lid on their extensions and renovations so they are not only ready for the inevitable onslaught but completed well before the threat of any more local or national lockdowns. (Unfortunately, at the time of going to press that doubly depressing scenario was looking a distinct possibility). And it’s also emerging that, whilst there may have been very few silver linings to Covid19, the lockdown has indirectly led to a highly significant boost to small builders’ workloads. Apparently, it’s all thanks to our old friend, the hapless DIYer with thousands upon thousands of botched do it yourself projects now in desperate need of professional intervention. In fact, a survey by Direct Line found that workloads have shot up by a staggering 49 per cent for jobbing builders over the summer months, with plumbers and electricians enjoying more modest but “The image you portray to your nevertheless significant additional work customers has never been under from this unhappy source. greater scrutiny than in this In effect, it’s been like a hundred bank digitally led world!” holiday weekends rolled into one, with all those cooped up homeowners being tempted to tackle the sort of tasks which almost inevitably they wish they had left to the professionals. In fact, we have commented many times in the past how A&E departments across the UK traditionally resemble war zones after a long weekend of botched home improvements and, whilst the virus may have seen some trips to the hospital being avoided at all costs, the financial implications of getting it wrong are not so easy to put off. And this at a time when finances in most homes are already stretched to the limit. Of course, now more than ever is the not the time to gloat at the misfortunes of others and, whilst the extra work is certainly welcome, it is vitally important in these uncertain times to remember that, however busy with work you currently are, it is nevertheless crucial to keep half an eye on the future, and be sure you know where your next jobs are coming from. Consequently, a little bit of self-promotion doesn’t hurt at all. The vast majority of contractors know by now the value of promoting their business by using workwear branded with company logos, and ensuring company vans are clean and eye-catching. Doing a good job – not only technically, but also by keeping customers informed of progress – will also raise your profile. Word-of-mouth remains the best marketing tool out there. But with the emergence of the digital world it is increasingly necessary for business promotion to also reach into this arena. An online presence is increasingly required, as potential customers will often search for your business on the internet to see what your work is like. Social media (like it, or not) is also hugely influential. Demonstrating your work and engaging with the community can help to promote your business. While many engage with the digital world seamlessly and enthusiastically, for others it can feel like a leap into the unknown. Before lockdown our Toolfair shows in London and Manchester included some seminars related to brand building. One presentation that stood out was from Sarah Toon, a specialist construction photographer. Sarah offered her expert advice on how to take better photos of installations using the camera on a smart phone. For those who missed it, Sarah’s camera phone tips can be found on page 77 of this issue. Whether you are taking photos solely to demonstrate your work to future customers on your phone, or uploading them to the broad variety of social media platforms, good images are hugely important. Not only do they demonstrate the quality of your own work, but they can also help to show the whole sector in a positive light. Self-promotion doesn’t come naturally to everyone. But, by using a camera phone to get some decent images, and sharing them, you can help to promote your business and – hopefully – secure more work.

THE MIGHTY GREEN pay as you grow

Get involved in Green Homes Grant work, urges industry bodies

© Bilanol/Adobe Stock

Officially launched last month, homeowners across England are now able to apply for funding to make energy efficiency improvements to their properties. All work carried out under the scheme must be completed by a TrustMark Registered Business, who will have demonstrated high technical

standards, quality assurances and a commitment to customer service. The scheme could benefit more than 600,000 homeowners as well as create new jobs and opportunities for training and protect existing jobs across the construction and energy sectors. Businesses wanting to complete work under the scheme can do so by signing up to TrustMark using the link below. Whilst welcoming the new initiative, the FMB has urged that the grant scheme needs to be part of a wider and more comprehensive long term retrofit strategy. The trade body is already working with organisations across the construction sector to develop an energy and water efficiency retrofit strategy for the nation’s homes.

The Governments ‘Pay as you Grow’ initiative is designed to reduce any shock from the winding down of current relief measures, such as the furlough scheme. Through the Jobs Support Scheme Whitehall will top up wages whilst the terms of repayment on bounce back loans will be extended. FOR FURTHER FULL DETAILS VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BU003

CHANGING STREAMS

INSPIRATION IN THE TRADES

Dickies is calling on tradespeople to nominate someone whose work inspires them

A new not-for-profit organisation, Changing Streams, has been established by an entrepreneur from Liverpool in a bid to remove plastic from the construction industry.

The global campaign, United by Inspiration, United by Dickies, is calling on tradespeople to nominate someone whose work inspires them by tagging them on social media, and by telling the workwear brand why – in words, photos or to camera and using the hashtag #unitedbyinspiration. Both nominators and nominees will be entered into a draw to win their own Portland shirt. Share your nomination on social media, using the hashtag #unitedbyinspiration, tagging dickiesworkwearofficial using the following details: On Twitter: @DickiesEurope.

Neal Maxwell, who has worked in the construction industry for more than 30 years, founded the organisation alongside researchers from the University of Liverpool, after a trip to the Arctic left him appalled by the levels of plastic pollutants in the Arctic Ocean. Businesses can pledge their support by joining a new membership programme that has been set up with the aim of raising awareness of the global plastic problem and funding research into the development of environmentally friendly alternatives.

Construction must be made a strategic priority for life learning, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB)

Professional Builder exclusively interviewed Neal Maxwell in our September edition and you can read the feature on the Changing Streams campaign on our website by using the link – WWW.RDR.LINK/BU007

“The Government intends for us to ‘build, build, build’ our way to economic recovery, but the construction industry is facing a skills shortage which is hampering our ability to do so” declares Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB. His comments come as the Prime Minister outlined an expansion of post-18 education and training. Berry is arguing for “stronger links between SMEs and colleges so that they have access to the communication and support that they need. Extra funding for colleges needs to include ringfenced funds for them to employ industry liaison officers who could act as a conduit between the colleges, students and employers.”

As part of the ‘Plan for Jobs’ businesses are being incentivised to take on young people through a number of different measures. Under its ‘Kickstart Scheme’ the Government will cover 25 hours’ Minimum Wage costs per week for each new job created for 1624 year olds. It is also offering a £2,000 incentive payment for each apprentice employed under 25, a £1,500 payment for apprentices aged over 25 and £1,000 for every new traineeships provided.

PLANNING AHEAD

Change of use planning reforms welcomed

Bureau Veritas has asserted that the decision to remove red tape when changing the use of buildings into residential is undoubtedly a positive one. Andy Lowe, from the Building Control team at Bureau Veritas, believes that “It unlocks the potential of unused spaces for conversion planning applications, ending years of delays in some cases, and in doing so, it can help to revitalise town centres.” In other reforms, homeowners will also be able to add up to two additional storeys to their home through a fast track approval process, providing they meet certain conditions surrounding impact, appearance and neighbour consultation. YOUR LETTERS... DOUBLE TROUBLE Dear Professional Builder

LATE AGAIN

Over half of the UK’s largest building contractors are taking longer to pay suppliers The construction industry supply chain risks pushing many contractors and subcontractors to insolvency through late payment, according to research by M&DH Insurance Services. 84 per cent (72 out of the 86 construction businesses to have disclosed payment practice data for the first six months of 2020) are failing to meet government targets for paying suppliers under the Prompt Payment Code. The Prompt Payment Code states that 95 per cent of invoices should be paid within 60 days of presentation. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BU012

I would like to question the warranties on PVCu and double-glazing products through your magazine. Most companies give a 10-year warranty on these units, and over the past couple of years, I’ve had problems with double glazed units failing, some after a few months and, in the latest example, after 8 years. It’s been stated to me that if the customer doesn’t have the warranty, that it passes from the unit maker, to the window manufacturer and then the building supply company. If there’s a problem the customer contacts the installer but, if he no longer trades, the warranty can’t be traced through the chain of supply. If any of the chain no longer exists the warranty becomes invalid. My experience with of all of this has been with major suppliers. Most are not members of any glazing federations and they never give a warranty certificate that can be passed to the customer. The customer pays for every part of the process and that includes any warranty.

I feel there’s a great injustice to the customer with this and that if these companies are saying there’s guarantee, that it should be underwritten to safeguard the customer. Could you give me your opinion on this? ● Joe O’Rourke, via email

PB: We asked FENSA for their expert response and here it is: My first observation, as you might expect, is that such products should always be purchased from a supplier that is a member of a known and established representative body and, even more so, one that subscribes to any of the recognised ‘Competent Persons’ schemes, of which FENSA is the largest. If the installer in question is a FENSA Approved Installer and the homeowner receives a FENSA certificate, then they will also receive an Insurance Backed Guarantee as an obligatory requirement. This is the case with any member of a CP scheme. The homeowner does not have to pay for this policy. An Insurance Backed Guarantee is a guarantee issued by an insurer that they will honour the terms of a warranty originally issued by the installer. In the event of the works they have undertaken being defective and the installer ceasing to trade, then the insurer will honour any bona-fide claim for the remainder of the original guarantee. The IBG only kicks in if the installation company ceases to trade but the product installed still comes within the original terms of the guarantee, up to 10 years. It is the homeowner’s policy. If the installer no longer trades the homeowner contacts the IBG provider. They do not have to chase up the supply chain to get a replacement. The IBG provider will then process their claim as any insurance company would. See here for further information, typical of such a policy: WWW.RDR.LINK/BU014 If installers are not with a CP scheme, they do not have to provide a warranty policy. It’s why choosing a company that subscribes to a relevant scheme, such as FENSA, is so important as it protects the homeowner automatically. However, within the organisation that runs FENSA (the commercial division of the Glass & Glazing Federation) there exists another service that is established to provide assistance in the case of disputes, including companies that do not belong to a CP scheme. Called RISA – and established for domestic window and door replacement services only – the organisation can help if an installer is in dispute with a homeowner, to provide Expert Witness services that included report writing to help avoid litigation. This can also help the installer further up the supply chain if it’s found that the fault lies with the manufacturer. ● Tom Butler, FENSA s t

Professional INVENTORS’ CORNER

AT your door

The Remedial Hinge could well open the door to a faster and more secure installation for chippies. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to its inventor, Harry Radford. hilst builders might work with their hands they make their money with what’s in their head, and it can be the very bespoke on site solutions that are the most lucrative. That’s certainly the case with Harry Radford, a Gloucestershire-tradesman who has experienced what so many in the industry have before him – come up against an obstacle, and been convinced that there must be a better way. “I was replacing some fire doors at a school that had been kicked off their hinges by some teenagers, and the

W

Gloucestershire tradesman, Harry Radford is the inventor of the Remedial Hinge

caretaker there gave me some pencils to insert into the holes in the frame. Of course, my reaction was to politely decline and point out that we needed to dowel them back in and fix them

properly, or install an entirely new lining. In truth, trying to fix timber doors into previously used and abused linings will be a problem many chippies have encountered, and replacing the frame just for the sake of broken hinges is both expensive and time consuming. I’ve actually uncovered all kinds of makeshift solutions – even golf tees – the likes of which are clearly going to undermine the performance of a fire door.”

Remedial hinge

Harry decided that the issue could be resolved with a new design, and took to his drawing board to prove it – and the result is the Remedial Hinge. “The principle benefit of my product is the eccentric inserts that rotate the fixing position, not to find the old holes, but to make new ones, and provide a better fixing. Not only that, both sizes – the 3in., and 4in. – have been designed and manufactured oversize, so the 3in. is actually 80mm rather than 75mm, for example. It’s the same principle as when you have a rebore in the pistons on your car, which means you can put it on your hinge jig and be confident you are cutting into completely fresh material. As a result, the fixings are deeper, and more secure, and you’re finished with the whole job

much quicker. If you’re working in a commercial or public sector environment, or for a private landlord, where, to be frank, the client just wants you off site as quickly as possible, using our product rather than replacing door linings is always going to be the better option.” In fact, so complete was Harry’s initial conception that his original drawings were the foundation for the finished product, as well as forming the basis of the documents supplied to the patent office, as Harry recalls: “Once we had our patent pending, we found a manufacturer locally to produce them for us and, when we subsequently tested them on our own jobs, we found that they worked first time and every time.” Whilst Harry moved quickly from that first brainwave to physical product he would soon realise that this was only the first steps on a much longer journey. “The

idea is definitely the easy part but there are many more hurdles that need to be overcome,” explains the Gloucesterbased tradesman. “The product is still patent pending, and we’re in the process of organising the British Standard approval, but when you come from a sitebased building background it’s the distribution, marketing and corporate side

of things that is most alien to me.” Undeterred, however, and buoyed by the positive feedback from his fellow builders, the Remedial Hinge is now available to the trades. The 37-year-old’s company, Harry Radford Bespoke Construction, has worked primarily on self-build projects, a market which is inherently high end, and where shortcuts are not option. It is that ethos which permeates through his approach to building, and his latest venture, as Harry explains: “Of course, you want to get a job done as quickly as possible, and get onto the next one, but you want it done properly and that’s really the principle behind the Remedial Hinge. It’s often the case with repair jobs that you don’t really know what you’re going to uncover, even when you’ve priced it, so if you are in the business of hanging doors, the Remedial Hinge could well come to your rescue.”

Made Great in GRASS ACT With Grass Concrete marking 50 years as a ‘growing’ concern, Professional Builder’s Lee Jones examines the company’s unique contribution to sustainability ost of the products we take for granted in the building industry have been developed as a reaction to prevailing trends, but there are those very few that emerge way ahead of their time, and Grasscrete certainly falls into the latter category. When Huddersfield architect, Jack Blackburn first developed this unique grass paving solution some fifty years ago issues of sustainability were at the periphery, whilst they now take centre stage. “We were actually publishing pamphlets on sustainable drainage management back in the ‘70s,” explains Grass Concrete MD, Bob Howden, “and

M

in the early days it was perceived as occupying a particular niche. Today, Grasscrete is more relevant than ever, and pitches at a much wider marketplace.” When the first green shoots of Grasscrete emerged from the drawing board of its inventor all that was available at that time were pre-cast concrete blocks. Their shape is largely determined by the fact that they have to be removed from a mould during manufacture, providing a form that doesn’t make them particularly conducive to growing grass, or to permeability. By contrast, the Grass Concrete solution is a cast-in-situ,

reinforced product with inherently improved grass growth and hydrology. Indeed, Grasscrete now sets the benchmark in its field and can boast both flood alleviation and prevention credentials. It can permeate at up to 90 per cent of the flow of natural grass and, thanks to a uniform percolation, will slow that flow of water and manage drainage much more effectively in the process. It is a property which is as equally effective on large flood storage areas, designed to prevent downstream inundation, as it is in the humble domestic driveway. Unlike impermeable block paving surfaces, the system will replenish the ground in a very natural way, optimising

Britain the drainage capability, and easing the pressure on rainwater infrastructure during heavy rainfall. Add to that a robust construction that can comfortably accommodate heavyweight vehicles, a surface that can absorb CO2, and the aesthetic appeal of a grass covering, and you have a product that is set to quite literally grow and grow. So just how does it work? All of the products that make up the Grasscrete concept are manufactured in the UK, in sites that include Buxton and Shrewsbury. Moreover, in order to ensure an expert installation every time, Grass Concrete has its own contracting division. In a testament to the robustness of the system, the company reports that examples of its grass paving on specific project are going strong some fifty years on, with some significant structural advantages over the alternatives.

Grass Concrete also has the British licence for the modular Betoconcept retaining wall system

Sustainable solution

The components that make up this sustainable paving solution begin with a sub-base material, a 10-20mm sand layer, 600x600mm formers laid side by side, and steel mesh positioned between the up-stands of those formers. It’s then time to pour the self-compacting, flowing concrete, which is levelled to the top of the formers. When the concrete is cured, it is the formers that create voids that are then filled with topsoil, seeded and watered. Bob Howden outlines the benefits: “Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) has become the catch all term for anyone looking to mitigate the effects of surface water run-off, but they can have their problems, especially if they’re transporting water to one particular area or hole in the ground. Grasscrete is designed to operate as a natural solution rather than an engineered one, with the added benefit of an aesthetic appeal.” “We work closely with developers in delivering the system on driveways,” he enthuses, “and with many developments now including a surface water storage

pond we are often called in to line the side and slopes of these, or construct an access road. Again, it’s the kind of application which can offer a natural look to the finished project.” The product range itself has also evolved, with grass roofs, retaining walls and variations on the grass paving theme, all introduced over the last five decades, as Bob recounts: “From the success of Grasscrete it was evident that there was a market gap that couldn’t be filled with that product alone so the next step was the launch of the pre-cast concrete Grassblock.” The latter provides a safer walking platform and a lower level of traffic vibration than is often associated with studded blocks. Furthermore, the interconnecting lugs help to form a tight interaction with neighbouring blocks to limit movement, whilst a continuous concrete surround to

each soil pocket makes this solution ideal for slope protection in helping to prevent soil from being washed down the slope. Elsewhere, its Grassroad plastic pavers originally hail from the USA, with Grass Concrete now owning the exclusive European licence. The company has also acquired the British rights to the dry build, concrete and modular Betoconcept retaining wall system. Most of that range is plantable and includes the low height Betoflor interlooking block walling, right up to the 22m Betotitan and a number of options in between. In the modern world, almost every company is at pains to promote its green credentials, but Grass Concrete is an enterprise that has held that ethos dear since its inception. It is a principle that is reflected in the raw materials of the Grasscrete system, where its void formers have always and continue to be manufactured from recycled plastic, and where recycled fill materials are used in sub-bases wherever possible. With a product range that scores not just in terms of sustainable drainage, but equally through carbon sequestration and a reduction in the urban heat island Continuing investment inwill newcontinue manufacturing effect, massive the company tofacilties be a keep the company a nose in front of the competition. green giant in ground engineering.

SPECIAL REPORT GARDEN ROOM

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

Chris Burdett, Director of PipeSnug and building company Urban Spaces, takes us through a garden room build.

G

arden rooms are becoming more popular, and even more so today as people work from home. They are an affordable build which in many cases do not need planning permission. I recently launched a company, Urban Spaces which specialises in designing and building garden rooms using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Here, I take you through the build from base to cladding.

STEP 1. FOUNDATIONS There are a few different systems available including easy pads and a traditional concrete base. We use the UK Helix Screwpile system because it requires little or no excavation which not only speeds the build time up, it’s also more environmentally friendly, as it requires no cement. STEP 2. WALLS, FLOOR AND ROOF The most popular types of wall and floor construction are still traditional timber stud walls, and timber rafters, but recently SIPs have gained traction and trust in the industry. SIPs construction has started to gain real momentum over the last 5 to 10 years mainly due to its speed of construction, superior air tightness and performance, and lack of waste due to it being made off-site to the exact measurements. Care needs to be taken to fill any gaps with expanding foam to retain the heat performance. Installation is very quick, and you can generally have the floors and walls formed within 24 hrs. It’s important to add that you need to avoid getting the panels wet, so we suggest an EPDM or single ply covering that can be laid over the roof instantly for weather protection and finished at a later date.

STEP 3. ELECTRICS Always follow Wiring Regulations and stay safe. One downside to SIPs over traditional stud work is that the 1st fix electrics can be awkward if you are not experienced. In the US, where they have been using SIPs for generations, it’s quite popular to heat a ball bearing and drop it down the SIPs cassettes pre-install, creating neat cable runs and little disturbance to the air tightness. The other way, and what I prefer, is to batten out the whole frame with 2x1 batten. Because the SIPs are polyurethane sandwiched between OSB boards, this batten method provides easy cable runs with less planning and also means the electrical back boxes require just a small cut out of the OSB boards rather than deep incisions into the insulation.

020_PB_NOV20_Layout 1 06/10/2020 12:12 Page 21

STEP 4. WINDOWS, DOORS, AND PLASTERBOARD Consideration has to be taken into account for the height of the threshold when installing bifold or sliding doors. If the client has paid for the luxury of aluminium, they won’t appreciate having to jump over the threshold to get out! In most cases, we install a decked area as part of the build, and this provides the opportunity to install a low level or no sill threshold detail. If you are fitting without a sill, remember to install a DPC or aluminium tray and completely fill the perimeter of the frame with silicone to stop water ingress at a later date. According to most SIPs manufacturers, foil backed plasterboard is not essential with SIPS as long as you are not in a high humidity environment. A vapour control layer is achieved externally with house wrap but foil back certainly won’t make the structure any worse either. If you’re building using stud work and rigid insulation, you must use foil backed and tape and seal the insulation. You also need to consider rigid roof insulation with firring pieces on top of a traditional joist roof, all of which adds to the final overall height, which may take you above the permitted development restrictions.

STEP 5. CLADDING Once you have applied your house wrap to completely envelope your garden room, battens are applied to form an air gap and vapour control area prior to cladding. There are many options for cladding a garden room. Colour render systems can be applied on suitable render carrier boards, but most clients choose timber cladding. You get what you pay for on cladding, and woods like Cedar & Siberian Larch can last a lifetime if you provide a little care and maintenance and they are installed correctly. Shou Sugi Ban, or charred timber, is very in vogue with designers, and can last up to 100 years, but it’s messy to fit.

Once the cladding has been completed, the roof trims can be fitted, and the EPDM roof completed. We powder coat our own slim profile steel trims individually so we can colour match each design seamlessly. Gutter and downpipes need to be fitted and we always place these out of sight on the rear elevation, and into an accessible water butt if possible. Internally, finishes vary but we recommend smart vinyl flooring which looks good, is very hard wearing and quick and easy to fit. Prior to fitting, we also fit tongue and groove chipboard flooring over a vapour layer. This levels out the floor and also decreases the door threshold height further, providing a really minimalist look. Skirting boards can now be fitted along with the second fix of all electrics followed by the decorating. Then, it’s decking if you want it! SPECIAL REPORT GARDEN STUDIO PROJECT

WORKING THE ROOM Earlier this year we reported on carpenter, Ollie Allen’s home improvement project and, like many tradespeople, lockdown has provided the perfect impetus for further progress.

A

fter a good few weeks of working on the garden studio framework, and the structure, the time to get it all weathertight has finally arrived. I’ve chosen a flat roof system that could have a green roof added in the future to help it blend in with the wildlife. I chose Rubber4Roofs one-piece EPDM system. It can be cut to any size you need easily, and ordering online was really great, with their online calculator adding in trims and kerbs where needed. I originally ordered the EPDM sheet in two sections for two roof platforms, but changed the design for simplicity when building the studio. The sealing tape gives a permanent bond to join multiple pieces together on site, and ordering in two pieces proved to be a wise decision because they were heavy getting them up there by myself! Having said that, weight and robustness is exactly what I wanted for a roof covering system, and I feel safe knowing it’s not going to rip or tear if the odd branch or tree part falls on it in a storm. It was easily installed on my own with the water-based rubber adhesive, and cutting out for the roof windows was pretty straightforward. It’s flexible enough to easily mould into the upstands and, really helpfully,

Using Norbord’s 12mm OSB I cut my own design of shingle based cladding strips on my CNC router

Rubber4Roofs have a video of each stage of the install. After cutting out the holes in my OSB roof surface, I added raised batons to create the desired fall on the RoofMaker rooflights. I’ve chosen a pair of stunning 1m x 1m fixed rooflights, which add loads of light into the building. After

lifting the units onto the roof, I sealed the perimeter with sealant, set them in place and screwed down ready for trimming and sealing up the EPDM to create a watertight seal around the windows. Simple as that – which was a nice way to finish the day of roof-based tasks! They have an intelligent profile design on the edge, which you can feed the EPDM sheet into really easily to create that final seal. Following on with the exterior of the building I have been working on a few design ideas to make the building look a bit more creative and give it that WOW factor. Creative ideas, together with using different materials, can help you to build incredible looking projects, which don’t blow the bank! Using Norbord’s 12mm OSB I cut my own design of shingle based cladding strips on my CNC router, using as much of the boards as possible to reduce

wastage. Once these are cut and secured in place, I can leave the OSB raw or add a weatherproof paint, or coating, to create an even more modern look. Inside the garden studio, I have clad the whole building in OSB – which is perfect for a hardworking workshop space – using thicker 18mm sheets of Norbord in areas where I know I need to hang cabinets or shelves to take that extra weight. I called my mate Greg the electrician to run all my conduit and install a new supply in armoured cable, along with connecting it all up to a nice new consumer unit just for the workshop circuits. I’m sorry to say Mr Mole’s time as sole destroyer of our garden is over, as my mate and I got busy with some spades and dug a nice long trench to run the armoured supply in. Maybe next summer’s project is the garden landscaping – just don’t tell the wife because that was the summer 2020 project she had in mind for me! Now I’m well on the way to a finished

The budget on this project is achievable for the average homeowner, or in your own back garden if you’re a tradesperson who needs that extra workshop space and doesn’t fancy taking on the rent of a unit in these uncertain times. I’m now ready to finish the final cladding and flashing, which is a good stage to be at before the bad weather hits for winter. building. It makes a big difference having installed the LED panel lights, because I can see what I’m cutting now instead of using that one dodgy strip light I borrowed from the plasterers a few years back! I’m really pleased with the hard work so far and it has transformed the space into a warm and exciting place to work in, which is pretty important now more than ever.

SPECIAL REPORT TRAINING & UPSKILLING

TOP FLOOR The Setcrete range of subfloor preparations products are supported by extensive training provision for the trades

etcrete’s range of products are formulated to be as easy to use as possible, creating a super smooth, flawless base onto which a floorcovering can be installed. If the products are used correctly a perfect result is virtually guaranteed. The company also provides training to builders who want to take advantage, and is able to provide tailored training (free of charge) to builders relevant to their level of experience. Setcrete has its own purpose-built training facility at its Staffordshire manufacturing headquarters and also provides training and product demonstrations at builders’ merchants around the country. While training courses have understandably been on hold for the majority of this year, because of Covid-19, the company will restart them as soon as it is confident that they can be safely delivered. In addition, the company’s training centre is currently undergoing an extensive redesign and fit out to create a more hands on learning space, with training courses offering more practical content.

S

Saving time and money

Much of the training provided is focused on the preparation work required on a job, as much as the actual application of

I

the products. At the same time, it is intended to inform attendees how to get the best out of Setcrete products and save time and money when undertaking floor-covering installations. An aspect of this is preventing simple and easily avoidable mistakes from spoiling a job and, in serious cases, threatening the integrity of the entire project. For example, the number one cause of floor failure is damage due to damp in the subfloor. But it is the failure to check for the presence of moisture in the subfloor and/or not installing a suitable moisture barrier that causes problems. Subfloor moisture can be the result of rising damp (normally in refurbishment projects) or because a recently laid concrete subfloor is still drying out (it takes around a day per millimetre of concrete to dry). Excess subfloor moisture must be supressed by the use of a suitable DPM treatment.

26 NOVEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

Prime importance

The importance of priming is another key topic covered in the training. When installing levelling compounds priming is important for two reasons. The first is to optimise the bond between the levelling compound and the subfloor. Secondly, if the subfloor is very absorbent, it can lead to unacceptably rapid drying of the levelling compound, which can compromise its strength. An absorbent subfloor can also lead to ‘pinholing’; the formation of tiny ‘craters’ on the surface of the levelling compound created by air bubbles rising through the compound and bursting when they reach the surface, resulting in small, but very visible pinholes. This not only looks unsightly, but again threatens the integrity of the levelling compound. While Setcrete products are designed to allow a degree of tolerance in their use, and are fairly forgiving if not used in

a textbook manner, certain product benefits depend on following preparation and mixing recommendations correctly. For example, using only the prescribed amount of water in water-mix products, so that the levelling compound doesn’t take too long to dry (critical for Rapid Set 30; a 30 minute-setting compound) or, in Deep Base applications, where excess water could cause the material’s constituent parts to separate out. The correct mix is equally important to enable a liquid consistency that flows easily, but has the required viscosity to manage an even thickness across the floor.

Product knowledge

Setcrete training also focuses on product selection, which equips builders with the knowledge to use the best product for the job; either for specific performance benefits – such as using a flexible levelling compound over a plywood subfloor – or to minimise the time to complete a job without taking unnecessary and risky shortcuts. It’s also useful for builders to refresh this knowledge as ongoing product development means new products and enhancements to existing products will offer further ways of making a job faster, easier or more cost effective. Correct application of products is, of course, part of Setcrete’s structured training, covering tools and tips for achieving a perfect result. Further one-to-one support is also available over the phone or by video call to address specific installation advice. In addition to in-person training, Setcrete has produced individual product installation videos to explain how a product should be used; highlighting the critical points that relate to preparation and application. SPECIAL REPORT ENERGY EFFICIENCY

S G N I H T T S R I F FIRST Don’t destine retrofit to fail, urges Hudson Lambert, director of Safeguard

he Government’s green retrofit campaign – driven by its Net Zero Carbon target and embodied by PAS 2035 – will be time and money wasted if buildings don’t have the fabric fixed first, especially in the case of Cavity Wall Insulation, according to Safeguard. The Government – thanks to its 2019 commitment to achieving a Net Zero Carbon economy by 2050 – is pressing to for a massive upswing in energy efficient domestic retrofit projects. The thinking is that as it’s too difficult to decarbonise our energy supply, we need to make our homes more energy efficient as in 2017 they accounted for 13 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions. This drive to retrofit for energy efficiency sits under PAS 2035 Retrofitting Dwellings for Improved Energy Efficiency which is designed to underwrite installation quality and the competence of the installers, and that any works undertaken are complementary. It is intended that these works are funded under the ECO obligation, although there

T

is doubt that the monies available will be sufficient to cover the estimated 19 million properties that would benefit from them. Alongside PAS 2035, we now have the Green Building Grant which – like the new retrofit standard – relies on TrustMark as a hub for those sourcing tradespeople. However, the Government should be mindful of the patchy history of these schemes where ill-advised, hasty, or poorly thought-through measures have actually resulted in more problems than they have solved.

Cavity wall insulation

All the types of energy efficiency measures likely to be installed – primarily External Wall Insulation (EWI), Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) and Internal Wall Insulation – have the potential, where a building is in poor condition and/or damp is already present, to ‘seal in’ problems for the future.

These problems can include EWI insulation installed on top of damp walls, exacerbating the issue; damp and mould growing behind IWI; poorly installed CWI that has caused damp; and rotting floorboards as homes have been made airtight leaving no way for condensation to escape. The consideration, detection, and treatment of even the most minor cases of damp prior to moving forward with any of these programmes is, therefore, imperative. Failure to do so will result in waste, expense, inconvenience and – possibly – homes that are even less accommodating to residents than before – all thanks to exacerbated damp problems. The main system to consider in terms of its problematic potential is CWI – largely as it is the most cost-effective of

I

SPECIAL REPORT ENERGY EFFICIENCY

the three measures available and most accessible in installation terms. And with up five million homes with cavity walls still to be insulated, the market – and waste – opportunity is massive. CWI is a highly effective measure that improves the energy efficiency of housing stock and cuts carbon emissions. Cavity walls were introduced primarily as a means of defending homes from penetrating damp caused by heavy rain. The thermal performance benefits of cavity walls, though, are hard to establish and cavity wall insulation (CWI) was introduced as a means of improving it.

The greatest risk to CWI is penetrating damp – either directly through sodden brickwork, via cracks in masonry or mortar, or through failed pointing. Thus, it is vital to survey properties carefully and ensure external walls are in good order prior to installation. This means cracks, mortar losses, poor pointing and other defects need to be rectified first: otherwise CWI will itself become wet through moisture penetration. This not only negates its insulation properties, it can potentially result in slumping and complete failure. This failure is almost always a function of the installation, rather than the products themselves. Trying to sort out failed CWI after the fact is inevitably expensive – according to a 2015 BRE report, CWI extraction then cost £1,500 for a terraced house and £3,700 for a semi. Incidentally, having ensured exterior wall condition is satisfactory, the application of a masonry protection cream – especially on west facing properties –

will also prove beneficial to the overall installation. This allows the wall to breathe, while acting as a water repellent. Apart from underwriting the dryness of the CWI, it can also improve thermal performance in the building as dry walls have better insulating qualities than wet ones – dry bricks have twice the thermal resistance of wet. (In cases where CWI has already been compromised by moisture, masonry protection cream can also assist in retrieving the situation – assuming it’s not too late by allowing the CWI to dry out, albeit slowly, while preventing further moisture ingress). So, we must be mindful that, despite the considerable energy benefits CWI bestows, there cannot be an unthinking move to install it without proper consideration of building conditions – we must fix the fabric first. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS BOOKKEEPING & TAX

NICE ONE TOMMY! Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to Tommy McNally, the developer of a new app that aims to take the time and trouble out of financial management and tax. ccording to the old adage death and taxes are life’s two great nailed on certainties and, whilst the manner in which you might shuffle off this mortal coil is largely out of your hands, you can make your encounters with HMRC rather more painless. That’s exactly Tommy McNally is the developer what a new app, of the Tommy’s Tax App Tommys Tax, is designed to do and, what’s more, it’s a service that the trades can access for free. “Because it’s not within their skillset many builders can find the financial side of their business stressful and intimidating,” explains time-served tax and issued, with builders then getting expert, Tommy NcNally. “The ethos paid by clients through the app. All behind our company has always been to incomings can be added, whilst it will provide smaller companies with the kind calculate an estimated end of financial of support that larger organisations take year tax bill, and any refunds that are for granted, and the Tommys Tax App is owed. Many builders will be unaware of central to that mission.” the huge range of expenses that they can The app hands builders the tools they claim for and the app includes a complete need to complete the job of organising database of these, and there’s a tax their finances, and all through the assistant on hand for any further convenience of the now obligatory questions.” smartphone. “80 per cent of our existing client base works in the construction sector and we’ve added some really builder-friendly features,” continues Tommy. “It’s essentially a comprehensive business management app where users can log expenses and take pictures of receipts, which can then be recorded and stored digitally. The guiding principle of Tommys Tax is simplicity for the end user, but behind it lies a complex architecture of data that is working on their behalf. What sets this service apart, however, is that it is the only bookkeeping app available that is entirely free. “With a lot of the existing accountancy software that’s out there, builders are paying for a subscription but they’re still having to pay out significant sums to an accountant to make sure that their finances are in order. If the users of Tommy’s Tax do need additional support that is, of course, something we can supply for a fee, but we’re effectively stripping away a lot of the monthly costs. It’s actually very easy for us to then provide a further service, because we would have access to all of the client’s

“People can’t, or don’t want to meet face-to-face at the moment, so the more that can be done through devices that we all routinely carry in our pockets the better. It’s about making the maximum use of the digital tools that are already out there.” financial records through the app.” When social distancing brought the shutters down on our society it opened a space where digital technologies could move in and they have proven to be our saviour. In 2020 the increase in users of the Tommys Tax app has been exponential, with the significant milestone of the 20,000th download recently recorded. Indeed, Tommy expects the business to have grown by 900 per cent by the end of the year, as more and more builders make use of online services. Tommy gives his view on the impact of

the pandemic on the financial sector, and how builders will be sourcing its services in the future: “We’ve actually been operating an app since 2015, and the market was already moving in our favour, but the Covid19 pandemic will undoubtedly accelerate that process. People can’t, or don’t want to meet face-toface, so the more that can be done through devices that we all carry routinely in our pockets the better, and once they’ve realised just how much easier it is, it’s not something that they’re just going to stop doing. It’s about making the maximum use of the digital tools that are already out there. We’ve set up a self-employed help group on

Facebook, for instance, that’s been guiding tradespeople through the various grants on offer during the lockdown, and we post regular videos on YouTube, all of which has been very well received.” Any discrepancy in your financial records can prove costly, and what the Tommys Tax App promises is a more precise bookkeeping experience. “From the work we do with the trades we know that it’s the accuracy that tradespeople often struggle with, and if you do find yourself with a significant debt with HMRC it can have serious implications for the rest of your life, and that’s where the Tommys Tax App can help.” THE TOMMYS TAX APP IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE APPLE STORE AND GOOGLE PLAY. YOUR LUX IN! Compact, Italian design is at the forefront of Ariston’s new Andris Lux unvented electric water heater, which is also convenient and easy to install, providing hot water at all times of the day to suit a property’s needs.

he unit is fully compliant with the latest ErP legislation (with units rated up to ‘A’ class), and available in three over-sink and four under-sink units respectively. The 1.5kW, 2kW and 3kW under-sink models have capacities of 6, 10 and 15 litres, while the 3kW over-sink units are available with capacities of 10, 15 and 30 litres. The range has a contemporary aesthetic, with its distinctive design incorporating a prismatic shape to maximise capacity and

T

save space. For added durability, it boasts a robust four-bolt flange, nickel-free copper element and TBS rod thermostat. Units also benefit from a waterproof structure and ELCB safety system to prevent electrical shock. All models feature a central regulation dial with a wide range of temperature settings, located above a heating action LED. There is also an “E” economy setting, enabling optimisation of comfort alongside energy savings.

THE FOLLOWING STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF HOW TO FIT A 10-LITRE CAPACITY ANDRIS LUX ELECTRIC WATER HEATER:

1 UNPACK Clean and prepare the work area, before carefully unpacking the Andris Lux from its box and check it is not damaged. Be sure to read the installation instructions thoroughly.

2 CHECK THE CONTENTS Ensure all the fitting components are present. These are: the 6-bar pressure relief valve, the dielectric junction connections for the unit and the wall-hanging bracket.

3 FIT DIELECTRIC JUNCTIONS Fit the dielectric junctions to the inlet and outlet water connections. These help protect the unit against corrosion. Using PTFE tape and silicon jointing compound on the inlet and outlet terminals will also help ensure a watertight fit. Tighten the junctions with an appropriate spanner.

4 HANG THE UNIT Check the wall where the Andris Lux is to be mounted is strong enough to support the weight of the unit. Then, mark the wall where the unit is to be installed according to the instructions, before drilling and fixing the hanging bracket – ensuring it is level. Once securely in place, carefully mount the unit on the bracket. Check it is stable and level.

5 CONNECT COLD PIPEWORK Turn off and isolate the cold water supply. Tee into the supply to make the connection and, if required, fit a pressure reducing valve and expansion vessel. Fit a 6bar PRV and connect the cold water supply to the appliance inlet. Secure the pipework with a mixture of compression and solder fittings.

6 CONNECT HOT PIPEWORK Connect the hot water outlet on the unit to the domestic hot water system, using 15mm copper pipe going to an approved flexible tap connector.

7 INSTALL DISCHARGE PIPEWORK Install the discharge pipe from the 6-bar pressure relief valve to terminate either into a drain or a point of safety outside. One method is to run the (sleeved) discharge pipe straight through the wall to a drain outside, conforming to G3 and British Standards. Another option, as shown here, is to run the discharge pipe through the wall via a tundish – this is done when unable to terminate at a safe location or if pipe lengths are excessive. In these circumstances, Ariston’s ‘Kit C’ tundish should be used.

8 CONNECT THE ELECTRICS Unscrew and remove the fascia panel of the Andris Lux to access the electrics. Connect the 13 amp electrical supply to the water heater. The cable is threaded through the rear of the unit and connected as per the wiring instructions in the manual. The electrical connection is via a 13 amp spur – in most cases, a standard switched fuse spur is sufficient. Once connected, reaffix the fascia panel.

IF YOU WANT TO WATCH AN INSTALLATION VIDEO OF THE ANDRIS LUX UNVENTED ELECTRIC WATER HEATER VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BU036 FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ARISTON’S ELECTRIC WATER HEATING PRODUCTS, VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BU037

9 COMMISSION THE UNIT To start the commissioning process, turn on the cold mains water supply to fill the unit, allowing any air to flush through the pipework. At this stage, check all pipework thoroughly to ensure there are no leaks and that all connections are well made.

10 TURN ON THE POWER Switch on the electrical supply at the fuse spur. Set the temperature using the dial on the front of the unit – with the “E” setting available for economy mode. Allow the water to heat up – the heating lamp on the front of the unit will go out once the water has reached the desired temperature. The water will heat up within 15 minutes. Once this is done, open the hot tap and check hot water is available. The installation is now complete!

ALL HANDS TO THE PUMPS The Green Homes Grant is making heat pumps even more attractive, according to LG.

he leading provider of energy efficient, renewable energy solutions, LG has greeted news from Government regarding the Green Homes Grant positively. The announcement has provided clarification that the Grant can be used alongside the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (DRHI) as an upfront payment to provide an immediate offset for the capital cost of the heat pump, rather than having to wait for quarterly payments to cover this cost. Government has advised that a Green Homes Grant can be used in conjunction with the Domestic RHI (DRHI). In this scenario, the homeowner will first need to apply for a Green Homes Grant and then subsequently can also apply for a DRHI. The amount of their Grant is then taken off the value of their projected DRHI payments. It should be noted that this cannot work the other way around. It will not be possible for claimants to apply for a DRHI,

T

or currently be in receipt of a DRHI for a specific installation that constitutes a measure under the Green Homes Grant, and then subsequently apply and receive a Grant. As the DRHI applies to a specific installation, identifiable via an MCS certificate, a homeowner could choose to have a further renewable heat measure using the Green Homes Grant. For example, they could already have a heat pump attracting the DRHI but then, under the Green Homes Grant, opt for the addition of solar thermal. The solar thermal installation would then attract a separate MCS certificate.

Green giants

LG’s Heating Manager Andy Hooper says this announcement will help bring clarity to what has been a slightly confusing picture: “Since it was first announced, understanding the introduction of the new

Green Homes Grant has been evolving bit by bit. Whilst the latest interpretation isn’t how we might have hoped it would be, it is a far better outcome than we feared, so we are pleased to see that the Grant can be used in conjunction with the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, although the grant will be claimed back from the amount of DRHI that a householder can claim. At least claiming the Grant will not now negate the ability to claim the DRHI at all. This gives us a better chance to step up the sales of domestic air to water heat pumps across the UK in conjunction with other renewable heating or cooling elements.” Both the product and the installer need to be MCS certified and, in addition, to receive the Green Homes Grant, the installer must also be TrustMark registered. LG sees this decision as a boost to its

sales of air to water heat pumps, with the company’s well-established LG ‘Therma V’ range of heat pumps already selling well in the UK. There have been a number of new additions to the range, including the new R32 versions of the Therma V Monobloc – of particular interest to specifiers and traditional heating installers who can install this option without the need of having any F-Gas qualifications. The LG Therma V series of heat pumps comprises a full suite of options – monobloc, splits, and high temperature options. The popular monobloc Therma V air-to-water heat pump operates on the low GWP R32 refrigerant and is available in 5kW to 16kW 1Ø and 12kW to 16kW 3Ø, in a wide operating range of between 10135Hz and water temperatures up to 65°C without an electric heater. It comes with an energy label rating of A+++ with the latest units incorporating a new type scroll compressor, designed and manufactured by LG Electronics with ‘wet vapour’ injection. The unit has excellent

performance at low ambient temperatures – 100% at -7°C. Heat pumps stand ready to replace the carbon emitting fossil fuel heating and hot water systems in new build homes and in replacement heating installations. The growing interest in AWHPs will see the need to train a significant number of installers to be able to install heat pumps. LG has stepped up its training efforts at its two training centres – at its head office in Weybridge and at the GRE Energy Training Centre in Chesterfield. The courses cover the basics of heat pump technology, design, installation and commissioning, and a practical demonstration of the Therma V R32 Monobloc unit. heating, plumbing & wetrooms

here’s nothing worse than stepping out of a piping hot shower or bath into an icy cold or inadequately heated bathroom or wet room – and today, with the selection of quality heating that exists for people to choose from, there’s absolutely no need for that to happen. Twenty years ago or so, there were two options: a standard panel radiator along the lines of those in the rest of the house – assuming it had central heating – or one of the original chrome plated ladder towel rails, which were pretty basic, and great for heating towels, but not up to heating the space around them – leaving the bathroom a little on the chilly side. Today, some people go for underfloor heating, and others for radiant panel heaters, but the vast majority, given the choice, will always opt for a quality dedicated bathroom or wet room radiator, such as those offered by leading radiator manufacturer Stelrad. They know it will provide the heat required, it will be ‘on’ as part of the heating throughout the house most of the day and, frankly, because today’s specialist bathroom radiators look so good. No longer just functional ‘heat sharers’, they are often very much the focal point of many rooms, with a wide range of sizes and shapes – contemporary, modern and traditional designs that are exactly right for whatever style of home you’re looking to install one in. The market for specialist bathroom radiators is around the million mark each year, so its far more than an interesting niche market. The growth in demand has allowed manufacturers like Stelrad to give it the attention it deserves and concentrate on this sub-sector of the radiator marketplace, providing a wide selection of designs, colours and finishes, allowing specifiers and homeowners to select radiators for their bathrooms and wet rooms that complement or contrast with the décor – even making the radiator the ‘stand out’ feature of the room.

True colours

To paraphrase the famous statement from Henry Ford, it wasn’t so long ago that you could have “any colour of radiator you wanted, so long as it was white”! Well things have changed hugely, particularly in the last two or three years. Before that a coloured radiator was a relatively rare thing but today there are readily available coloured options. If you can wait a few weeks for delivery, Stelrad’s range sees most of their offering available in up to 36 different RAL colours. Last year, in fact, the company

became the first in the UK to actually hold some of their best selling coloured radiators in stock, available for delivery in 72 hours. These were mostly a selection of anthracite grey models, which have been really popular, particularly as monochrome bathrooms have come back into fashion and anthracite grey complements chrome brassware perfectly. Stelrad’s latest release of specialist bathroom, kitchen and living space radiators – marketed under its Boutique branding – features a selection of stainless steel radiators for the first time – with a selection of finishes – polished and brushed stainless steel, and a number of brand new designs that are being warmly received by a wide cross section of purchasers – from homeowners and installers to specifiers of up market hotels and commercial properties. It seems the desire to incorporate designer and decorative radiator options has really caught on and Stelrad’s ‘stats’ for 2019 show the sales of these attractive designer options really beginning to take off.

“We are offering a comprehensive, stylish collection that genuinely provides the total radiator offering under one roof,” Chris Harvey – Head of Marketing at Stelrad

The manufacturer’s new ‘Boutique’ series offers a comprehensive, premium range of bathroom radiators and towel warmers for installers, designers and specifiers looking for quality products to include in new build and refurbishment projects. This collection offers the marketplace the widest range of styles and by far the largest selection of sizes of specialist decorative and designer

bathroom radiators on offer from any manufacturer in the UK. You’ll find familiar and welcome products in the new Collection – with names such as Caliente, Concord and Column – but equally you’ll find new styles and names such as Como and Lecco – products exclusive to Stelrad, along with Silhouette as well as new additions and designs for established styles like the Concord Side Concept and Concord Side Chrome – and even Concord Chrome Vertical. FINISHING TOUCHES Kevin Belben, Technical Applications Manager at Cistermiser and Keraflo discusses the role of the latest infrared ‘no-touch’ bathroom products in the Covid-19 landscape.

ith the focus now firmly placed on regular hand washing to minimise the spread of the Covid-19 virus, bathroom washbasin taps are firmly under the spotlight. Deckmounted IR taps offer hygienic, handsfree operation, and are typically supplied with either 3.5 or 5 litres per minute flow rate nozzle options. With Cistermiser’s curved-bodied Vectatap, or modern-styled Novatap, for example, water flow is turned on when the user presents their hands to the IR sensor located on the lower body. When the user’s hands are moved away, the flow of water stops after just a 2-second delay. Also suitable for situations where lessabled or elderly users may find it difficult to operate conventional taps, these products can provide a practical solution for delivery of cold or temperature controlled hot water supplies. Water flow run-on time and the IR sensor range between the tap and the user’s hands are fully adjustable. In order to prevent water wastage, however, these mains or battery-powered touch-free washbasin taps will automatically switch off after 60

W

seconds continuous flow. Bathroom design must continually evolve to meet the changing needs of our society and IR is entrenched in the heart of ongoing product development. A rise in multigenerational households means that not only do WCs need to be appropriate for toddlers and young children, they are also increasingly being called on to suit an ageing population, who may also be living with dementia and require help when using the toilet.

Young and old

If a carer is trying to perform multiple tasks in the bathroom, the use of IR notouch activation can definitely help to get everything done quickly, easily and hygienically. Indeed – initially in commercial washrooms and now in domestic bathroom settings – IR has started to consign traditional toilet flush handles to history.

Infrared sensor-activated WC flushing valves, such as the Easyflush combined flush and filling valve from Cistermiser, can be installed in either Walkaway or Wave options. With solutions for close-coupled or concealed cistern-fed installs, they’re programmable in a variety of ways, giving full control over the volume of water used and whether the toilet flushing is activated by ‘touchless’ operation (with a wave of the hand), or ‘occupancy sensing’ operation (by simply standing up and walking away from the WC). Intelligent IR-activated washbasin taps and toilet flushing valves are easy to operate, minimise water wastage and help to give peace of mind to family users across all age groups, regardless of their physical or mental capabilities. A SAFETY VALVE It’s crucial that thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) are installed in the property to keep homes safe and comply with the Building Regulations, explains Richard Bateman, Product Manager for Plumbing and Heating at RWC.

ast year, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE) raised awareness around a worrying rise in the number of incidents with scalding and burn injuries. The trade body found that from 2017-2018, people who were treated in hospitals for scalding from taps jumped up from 713 to 755 (nearly 6 per cent), on those admitted the previous year. However, hot water incidents can easily be minimised, so long as thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) are installed and used in the right way.

L

Why are TMVs so important?

TMVs are crucial because they allow hot water to circulate at a high temperature to prevent Legionella bacteria from breeding in the system, while ensuring safe water temperature from outlet to prevent scalding injuries. The key to avoiding Legionnaires’

disease is to kill the bacteria in water supplies themselves. Water needs to be stored above 60°C in domestic buildings to kill Legionella. However, these temperatures are hot enough to cause scalding. To resolve these concerns TMVs are installed before water outlets. They allow the hot water system to run at a higher

disinfection temperature, which can be blended with cold water at the point of use to achieve a pre-set safe temperature from the outlet. Alongside this, TMVs are also responsible for ensuring a safe outlet temperature even when water pressure fluctuates due to the simultaneous use of other appliances.

Regulation around TMVs

In 2010 it became a legal requirement to install TMVs in all domestic new builds. This is to comply with The Building Regulations 2000, Approved Document G – sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency. The regulation extends to any properties undergoing a ‘change of use’ after 2012. Further to this law, TMVs are also regulated by the Recommended Code of Practice for Safe Water Temperatures by the Thermostatic Mixing Valve Manufacturers.

Choosing the right TMV

There are several TMVs to choose from – but for domestic applications, you need TMV2 certified valves to comply with the regulations and the TMV2 Scheme (formerly known as the BuildCert scheme). Under this scheme TMVs must always maintain a safe and stable temperature of

under 48°C from outlets and quickly shut off in the event of hot or cold-water failure. At RWC, we have a range of TMV2 certified valves to choose from in our Reliance Valves brand, which additionally feature a rapid fail-safe mechanism to shut off the valve for stopping the water supply to outlet, in case either hot or cold supplies are cut off/interrupted. When choosing a TMV, you also need to consider how fast and easy it is to install and service the valve. The quicker and simpler it is to install the TMV, the faster you can move onto the next part of the project.

This is where the Easifit TMV can help. TMV2 certified, this valve is ultra-compact and lightweight and, with its small footprint, it lends itself to tight spaces underneath baths and basins. Its flat faced union connections also make any future maintenance much simpler and more efficient. Designed to run at exceptionally low flow rates, it helps reduce the property’s water consumption as well. The valve is WRAS approved and reduces the risk of scalding, while reducing bacteria growth by enabling hot water systems to run at a higher temperature.

CIPHE further highlighted in their report, that of the 755 finished consultant episodes allocated to scalds from taps between 2017-2018, a staggering 185 were for children aged under-four. With the correct specification and use of TMVs, compliance can be met, and your project can run smoothly. Most importantly, potentially fatal injuries can be prevented, and homes can be safeguarded. RAISING THE BAR Dan Martin, Installer Channel Marketing at Mira Showers, looks at the advantages of bar shower valves and how these have been developed ommon the world over nowadays, bar mixer valves have become a staple product within our industry and come with many advantages; they’re familiar, affordable and easy to install or replace with minimum disruption to the rest of the bathroom. Even though bar valves have been about a long time, however, it doesn’t mean we don’t give them any less attention than any other product, in terms of innovation and improvement. We’re always speaking to installers and specifiers, and they’re telling us that bar valves are still an essential product; so, as a market leader in the showering industry, we’ve put a renewed focus on these products so that they remain the very best available.

C

The sandwich generation

A new phrase that you’ll hear more and more is the ‘sandwich generation,’ where parents are caring for their own children, whilst simultaneously also providing some, or a similar amount of care, for their parents or in-laws. These households need to make their living space work for all ages within the family, including the functionality of the shower. These changes include making sure there are more safety elements considered and installed within the shower. To address this demand, all Mira mixer showers feature our innovative CoolShield technology. Thanks to this innovation, the valve stays cool throughout operation and removes the risk of vulnerable users touching the hot surface of the valve.

Any plumbing system

In addition, all our bar valves function on any plumbing system, whether it’s our

Coda Pro or some of our latest additions, such as the Relate EV and Relate ERD. With a five-year guarantee, they also include Magni-flo technology – this provides up to three times more flow, even when fitted to low pressure, gravityfed hot water systems.

You get what you pay for

We’ll be honest, there will always be

cheaper alternatives available on the market, but these don’t benefit from the innovation, quality and assurance that comes with buying a Mira Showers product. The phrase ‘you get what you pay for’ has never been truer. For instance, there are retrofit options to replace existing showers, as well as the opportunity to upgrade to a competitivelypriced luxurious experience with an ERD

necessary adaptations in both design and functionality can be made for every shower we produce. We also listen to our customers via our customer service call centre and hear from installers through the Mira Installer Club, face-to-face at trade events, and social media. We know how important it is to use these opportunities so we can learn more about the problems that can materialise, and how we can learn from these and make adaptations in the future to make everyone’s lives so much easier. (overhead deluge option) – a great chance for installers and specifiers to upsell and add even more to the customer’s showering experience.

Feedback, feedback, feedback

We’re always talking with installers and specifiers to get their valued opinions about our products. And where we can, we take this feedback on board, and share this with our R&D team, so the

Fast-fix kits

Take our fast-fix kits as an example. Long gone are the Z-connectors that we were told people hated, and all-brass compression fast-fix kits have been introduced, now provided as standard in all our bar valves. Mira bar valves also come with the handles that are separate to the valve – something which we’ve also implemented following feedback. This means that, to

set the maximum temperature, the valve no longer needs to be dismantled, removing the fear of potentially damaging a brand new product.

What about the customer?

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, which means we’ve also adapted our bar valves with our customers, and their overall experience, in mind. These now come with easy-clean fittings and spray plates, including rub-clean nozzles, so the customer can keep their shower looking and operating at it’s very best for longer.

IN GOOD HANDS Knipex UK marketing manager, David Barnes looks at the latest trends in hand tools for installers. anufacturers, such as Knipex, are moving towards more compact tools with multiple features, and that’s reflected in our new products. Take the Cobra XS, for example, the smallest water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability, measuring just 100mm long. The tool can adapt to eleven adjustment positions and grip nuts up to 24mm in width. In 2020, we launched a selection of tools that have features designed to save time, effort and cost for professionals. The TubiX pipe cutter makes it easy to cut pipes up to 35mm in diameter and with a wall thickness of 2mm accurately – with just one hand thanks to the QuickLock quick adjustment guide. It locks the tool onto the pipe, then accurately positions the cutting wheel for different pipe diameters. After you have cut the pipe, an integrated, retractable deburring tool can be used to smooth out the cut surface. The cutting wheel is made of quality ballbearing steel and can be exchanged quickly with a spare wheel, which is also located in the feeding barrel.

M

Sensitive type

Hand tools are also being adapted for use on chrome and other sensitive surfaces too. For instance, the new 300mm Pliers Wrench can now grip width across flats up to a diameter of 68mm (2 1/2”) thanks to two additional adjustment positions. It rounds off the range of six pliers wrenches (125, 150, 180, 250, 300 and 400mm). For especially sensitive surfaces, Knipex now offers plastic jaw covers as accessories for the 180, 250, and 300mm variants. The protective jaws are easily

attached by hand and snap into place to suit the geometry of the pliers’ jaws so that they do not slip during work. Hand tools are also extremely powerful, thanks to their design. For instance, the 160mm CoBolt S has a 25fold amplification of manual force. It is now available with a recess on the cutting edge, so the popular compact bolt cutter can cut through round materials even more effectively. Bolts, rivets and nails with a diameter up to 4.4mm, and particularly tough materials, such as piano wire and spring steel with a diameter up to 3.3mm, can now be cut in a single movement thanks to the recess located close to the joint. The enhanced leverage effect close to the pivot point makes cutting larger cross-sections easier. Cable strippers are also being designed with more features. The PreciStrip16, for instance, quickly and precisely strips fine, flexible and solid cables, holding all materials tightly and

firmly in its semi-circular grooved holding clamps. The pliers have a wide capacity range (which is easily adjusted) from 0.08 to 16mm2. The cable cutter on top of the PreciStrip16 reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16mm and solid conductors up to 6mm. Parabolic stripping blades separate insulation from both extremely finestranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip the insulation off backwards. The PreciStrip16 has an adjustable length stop, so accuracy is guaranteed time after time, even on repetitive jobs. When needed, the blade cassette can be easily replaced. The ergonomic handle makes cable stripping easy, and it comes with a description label that can be personalised, meaning no more mix-ups and no more lost tools. BARGAIN HUNT re you looking for a cheap builders’ van? Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a big budget to get a practical and efficient commercial vehicle. In fact, armed with a modest £5,000, you should be able to get a reliable used van that’s large enough to carry all of the tools and equipment you need to get the job done. Honest John Vans has picked out its top five used vans for £5,000 or less from Ford, Vauxhall, Citroen, Peugeot and Volkswagen. These compact but capable commercials are generally found in large numbers on the second-hand market, which means you can be quite picky when it comes to condition, spec and mileage. What’s more, these vans are all rated highly for ease of use, comfort and fuel economy.

Dan Powell, Editor of Honest John Vans, names his top five bargain used vans.

A

Ford Transit Connect The mk1 Ford Transit Connect is – in our opinion – the best budget used van for £5,000. Simple to work on, cheap to run and practical, the Connect is a dependable buy for builders in need of a cheap and reliable small van. What’s more, a £5,000 budget will easily secure a 2014 model with a full MoT and dealerstamped service history.

Citroen Berlingo The Citroen Berlingo is a versatile van that’s available in two lengths – L1 or L2. The standard version will carry 625kg, while heavy-duty models will haul up to 850kg. A budget of £5,000 should get

you a six-year-old Berlingo. Most of the deals are for the 1.6 HDi models; however, with a bit of searching in the classifieds, you should also find more powerful versions with the 2.0 HDi diesel engine.

Peugeot Partner Like its Citroen stablemate, the Peugeot Partner is a compact van with big potential. All versions are cheap to run, easy to drive and practical. Spend £5,000 and you’ll get a five or six-year-old Partner with a full 12month MoT and dealer service history. We’d recommend finding a van in Professional trim, as these include air-con and Bluetooth connectivity for your phone.

Volkswagen Caddy The Volkswagen Caddy has lots to offer used van buyers, with car-like handling and big carrying capacity. Mileages on Caddys in the £5k classifieds vary wildly but don’t be afraid of higher mileage examples. Indeed, short drop vehicles with lower mileages may well have had harder lives and it always pays to check the van’s usage and history.

Vauxhall Combo

HONEST JOHN’S GOLDEN RULE FOR BUYING A USED VAN A used van should always come with a V5C logbook. This important document will have the name and address of the person you’re buying it from (or the details of their company). Always ask the seller for ID (driver’s licence or utility bill) so you can check that their details and address matches the V5C. Take time to check the registration number and the VIN (vehicle identification number) too, so you can confirm that the V5C matches the vehicle.

The previous-gen Vauxhall Combo is a rebadged version of the Fiat Doblo Cargo which is good news, as this Fiat is a capable and quality van with proven mechanicals. A budget of £5,000 will tap into 2015 models with average mileage and one or two previous owners.

time to van up again! Laid up like the rest of us on the hard shoulder of life during lockdown, the commercial vehicle market is showing some welcome signs of a turbo charged drive to the 2020 finishing line.

The NISSAN NAVARA already had a reputation as a hard case amongst commercial vehicle 4x4s, and that’s a status that will be reinforced with the arrival of the OFF-ROADER AT32. Created through an ongoing partnership between the Japanese manufacturer and world-famous off-road experts Arctic Trucks, there’s full underbody shielding, and new 31.6” Nokian Rotiiva AT Plus tyres. Dual valves allow fast and accurate adjustment of tyre pressures when moving between different terrains, whilst the advanced Arctic Trucks Bilstein performance suspension system has been added.

T

he unavoidable cancellation of the Commercial Vehicle Show in April effectively curtailed what was, until then, a bullish van and pick up market, and deprived key manufacturers of a traditional shop window for new models and technological innovation. Yet, with so many of these new vehicles conceived and designed several years previously, and delivered to precise launch dates, it was a case of pressing on regardless, although, as a result, a large number of significant updates have inevitably passed under the radar. Fortunately, in the past few weeks, there has been a lifting of restrictions on gatherings, and an increasing number of opportunities have presented themselves to talk to people at the sharp end of the commercial motor industry, and actually get behind the wheel for a proper on-theroad driving experience.

No matter how rough the road gets the FORD TRANSIT will continue to be a builder’s faithful companion. The new Transit Trail and Transit Custom Trail models have been designed specifically to operate in tougher working environments, with the enhanced traction of a new mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD) on front-wheel drive Transit and Transit Custom variants, and Intelligent AllWheel Drive on Transit. There’s some fittingly rugged looks for these champions of challenging terrain, together with an mLSD system that automatically transfers engine torque in low grip conditions to the wheel with the most traction.

Based on the already popular, high specification Barbarian version, the MITSUBISHI L200 Barbarian+ offers a GST PLUS II Hardtop with pop-out side windows and sliding bulkhead window. Other load area upgrades include tailgate central locking integrated with vehicle central locking/alarm, loadbay lighting, hardtop roof rails, and a protective under-rail load bay liner.

씱 Professional Builder will be road testing a number of options from the ISUZU D-MAX in the coming issues but, in the meantime, here’s a sneak preview of the new tipper. Based on the Utility Extended Cab, the load bed is 1,977mm long by 1,800mm wide. The rugged ‘Tippadeck’ bed is constructed using 18mm thick interlocking alloy floor panels and loads are kept secure thanks to 300mm high sideboards and tailboard, also made from lightweight alloy, and heavy-duty underfloor tie points.

“The role of so-called white man in all his entrepreneurial guises has never been more crucial in helping our flat lining economy back on the road to financial stability. And the good news is that the choice of vehicles to help him achieve those goals has never been more extensive or impressive.”

쑿 At the more exclusive end of the LCV market only 100 examples of the FIAT DUCATO Shadow Edition will be made available to UK van users. The long wheelbase model features an exclusive exterior look 7-in. DAB radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and full air conditioning. Rear parking sensors are also fitted as standard.

쑿 Designed to group together some of the range’s most popular options, standard equipment on the new IVECO DAILY Business trimline will include manual air conditioning, cruise control, front fog lights as well as electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors. The Daily range spans 3.5 tonnes GVW to a range-exclusive and sector leading 7.2t.

씱 The MERCEDES BENZ VITO is already one of the slicker commercial vehicle presences on our roads and the van has further evolved in 2020. There’s already a choice of two van models, three lengths, four engine derivatives, two transmissions and three trims – Progressive, Premium, and Sport. The latest updates include a choice of five solid and six metallic paint colours and a range of alloy wheel options.

쑼 Other additions to the D-Max range include a dramatic new look for the flagship model in the ‘Adventure’ range. The XTR Colour Edition has a distinctly premium appearance, with front bumper guard, bonnet protector and headlight frames all colour-coded with the body.

씱 Radical sports styling on the Ford Transit is now firmly within reach with the news that the MS-RT Transit Custom and Transit Connect will be available direct from Ford Transit Centres. The authentic motorsport design and – for Transit Custom – the option to personalise with a huge range of colours, means these vehicles are like no other vans on the road.

e r e h p s o m t a the is electric

As Renault continues to connect with a surging electric vehicles market, Professional Builder’s Lee Jones examines the latest developments in the range.

f the coronavirus pandemic teaches us anything it’s that our world can change very quickly, but that we are equally resourceful enough to adapt and overcome. Indeed, the demands of climate change and air pollution have already been driving the automotive sector on its own journey of transformation towards zero emissions solutions, and it is a road along which the commercial vehicle sector will continue to accelerate in the years ahead. It is, of course, not all about keeping Greta happy because in the longer term, with ever tighter legislation, there will be a compelling business case for switching to electric vehicles (EV), not least if you want to comply with the increasingly stringent demands of ultra-low emissions zones in our urban centres. For builders, the time may well have come to look beyond the internal combustion engine.

I

I

“A key priority for all businesses is the total cost of ownership savings that switching to an EV van can bring,” explains Steve Whitcombe, Head of Pro Plus. “Not only that, but the infrastructure for plug in vehicles continues to grow, with 2019 seeing a 54 per cent increase in charge points. According to data from Zat Map [a UK-wide database of charging points] there are over 18,000 devices available across the UK in over 11,000 locations, allowing customers to charge up to 32,000 vehicles through individual connectors.”

Bright sparks

Renault can already point to considerable experience in EVs, having sold a quarter of a million such vehicles worldwide since 2011, and boasting a 31 per cent market share in a sector that grew by a prodigious 190 per cent in 2019 alone. The French manufacturer can now boast a

considerable choice of payloads and body options across its electric portfolio and the launch of the new 3 ½ tonne Renault Master Z.E. is a further extension. Previously only available as a 3.1 tonne, the new model is available in panel van, chassis cab, and platform cab versions. Crucially for the end user, thanks to an additional 375kg of payload compared to the previous Master Z.E., there’s no compromise on cargo carrying capacity. The EV panel van version will, in fact, deliver the same builder-friendly 1,490kg capability as its diesel counterpart, in a rear load space that ranges from 8 - 13m3 across the three different lengths and two heights available. The lithium ion 33kW hr battery provides a range of 75 miles, whilst the 57kW power unit delivers torque of 225Nm. The likes of regenerative braking, and eco mode will help to optimise the

range, and the vehicle can be charged in just six hours from a seven-kW wall box. Prices for the Master Z.E. 3 ½ tonne model start from £52,000 plus VAT. Since going on sale in 2017, the Kangoo Z.E. continues to be a hit, with a 217 per cent increase in 2019 compared to the previous year. Now, with the introduction of the Business variant, the trim levels on this popular EV have been expanded to mirror those on its diesel sibling. The new model retains a 33kW hr battery and 44kW motor and 143-mile range, with payloads between 605 and 640kg. The Business+ features £1,070 worth of equipment for just £600 compared to the Business version. On the outside, it benefits from metallic paint with bodycoloured bumpers front and rear, while electrically operated and folding door mirrors are finished in gloss black. Inside, driver and passenger can enjoy a central armrest with storage below and an overhead parcel shelf. At the business

“A priority for all businesses is the total cost of ownership savings that switching to an EV van can bring” end of the vehicle, the load area is equipped with a practical rubber floor covering, whilst tradespeople can make short work of navigating tighter sites with rear parking sensors. The Kango Z.E. also benefits from the

Renault Pro Plus 3-year, 100,000-mile warranty. In addition, access to living these electric dreams can be facilitated through a range of attractive new finance packages, including a five year 0 per cent hire purchase agreement. Renault’s new Drive Now, Pay Later initiative provides a three month payment holiday on chosen vehicles, whilst the Select & Collect stock reservation tool allows van users to pick their preferred model from existing stock, which can then be ready to drive away immediately. A four day test drive programme gives customers a true experience of owning a Renault commercial vehicle and an ‘EV café’ has been introduced, initially in response to lockdown, to allow customers who were pondering the move to electric to discuss it with the experts. charging ahead

When it comes to new vehicle launches it’s certainly an electric avenue. Professional Builder looks at the current trends in battery powered LCVs he automotive industry is in the grips of the most transformative changes it has experienced since the internal combustion engine emerged, and the result is cleaner, greener vehicles. Manufacturers are now on the charge to produce electric vehicles that can match their diesel counterparts and it has sparked a storm of new launches.

T

PEUGEOT E-EXPERT The Peugeot E-Expert can now pack a slightly heavier punch with a payload of up to 1,275kg. If you think range anxiety will be problem then consider that nearly 80 per cent of commercial vehicle drivers travel, on average, less than 124miles (200km) per day, comfortably within the 143 to 205 miles distances across the EExpert range. WWW.RDR.LINK/BU061

MERCEDES-BENZ E SPRINTER It is one of the industry’s most iconic vehicles and can now be supplied in an L2 H2 front wheel drive electric version. Available exclusively in the Progressive trim, the eSprinter has a range of up to 96 miles, there’s a Government OLEV grant of up to £8,000, eligibility under the Transport for London’s scrappage scheme and exemption from ULEZ charges. Thanks to the configuration of the batteries under the floor, the load space also remains uncompromised.

FIAT E-DUCATO Coming in at the larger end of the panel van spectrum, the Fiat E-Ducato will keep you on the road with a single charge from 99 – 192 miles. Charging times are impressive, moving from zero to full capacity in just 2 hours and 25 minutes, whilst the 47kWh battery is available with AC or DC charging capability. As one of the bigger beasts of the sector, payload is a mammoth 1,950kg, with volumes between 10m3 and 17m3, depending on vehicle height and length.

VAUXHALL VIVARO-E Tradespeople might prick up their ears at the prospect of towing a trailer with the Vauxhall Vivaro, not to mention a 1 ¼ tonne payload, and choice of panel or double cab. The ‘myVauxhall’ app will keep you connected, with information on state of charge and charging points accessed from your smartphone. Vivaro-e customers can choose between two sizes of lithium-ion battery. A 75kWh unit provides up to 188 miles of range, while business users with smaller areas to cover in the working day can opt for a 50kWh battery with a range of up to 125 miles.

ABT E TRANSPORTER Across its many variants the Transporter is actually the biggest selling van of all time, and that extensive portfolio now completes a full circuit with a battery option. The manufacturer promises a high load capacity and fast charging, with a range of 82 miles, cargo space of up to 6.7m3, and 80 per cent charging in just 45 minutes. WWW.RDR.LINK/BU064

CITROEN E-DISPATCH Compromise on payload is not an option for builders and the Citroen E-Dispatch offers the same vital statistics as the existing diesel model. Available in three lengths, with load volumes up to 6.6m3 and payloads up to 1,262kg, there’s two operating ranges available – 148 and 211 miles, depending on the model. As with electric vehicles in general, where the EDispatch departs from diesel is in zero emissions and CO2, as well as dramatic running cost reductions. It can facilitate access to urban low emissions zones and, of particular appeal to builders, has a class-leading towing capacity of 1 tonne.

! w o n r e t t e b loads

It’s been a long haul, in more ways than one, but there are a loads of reasons why Professional Builder has enjoyed getting into bed with SsangYong’s new LWB Musso Rhino pick up.

ho would have believed it? Us getting all misty eyed as our lockdown companion of more than nine months finally disappeared down the road in a squeal of rubber on tarmac. But then global pandemics do strange things to men and machines, and we have grown unusually attached to our long-term vehicle test, the SsangYong Musso 4x4 LWB Rhino Pick-up. Ever since that first tentative trip to the local shops for essential provisions, to that triumphant foray into the re-opened builders’ merchant’s yard in search of precious sand and cement for that new patio, the Rhino has been there for us on every step of an unprecedented journey. Of course, even with an easing of some restrictions some things have remained resolutely off limits. For instance, we would have liked to have had the opportunity to thoroughly test its much vaunted off road capabilities, which claims to draw on SsangYong’s long pedigree in all wheel drive technology.

W

I

The Musso comes with one engine option, a 2.2 litre turbodiesel, and features a selectable 4-wheel drive system with power delivered permanently to the rear wheels and front wheel drive dialled in electronically in the neutral position. Hill decent control and hill start assist help to provide optimum grip traction and, of course, extra safety during inclement weather and difficult site conditions.

Watch this space

Social distancing also meant that we couldn’t ask four burly builders to join us in the dark tinted rear privacy glassed cab to test leg and bum room, but the overall impression is that the passenger space is clearly on the more generous side than many similar vehicles we have driven. The door apertures are wide and rectangular without intrusions and, although not adjustable, the rear seat back is inclined slightly, rather than the bolt upright seating in most double cab pick-ups and has a high base for a good all-round view.

64 NOVEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

The cabin, which is very closely related to its Rexton car cousin, is fitted and finished impressively enough with everything where it should be. Although a word of warning…. always make sure ‘Park’ is engaged when stopped as the battery will drain very quickly if left in neutral – as we discovered to our cost! No doubt the Covid-postponed official launch day back in early March would also have been used to highlight the Rhino’s impressive towing figures. It’s generally accepted that most pick-ups cannot tow a trailer at maximum weight, and carry a full payload at the same time, but the Rhino is different in that it can comfortably tow 3.5 tonnes to give it a segment leading advantage. With the sector’s largest load bed offering capacity for over a tonne, this is a serious shifter of crew, materials, and plant. And build quality feels reassuringly good, with the use of ultra-strength steel for a stiffer chassis, and rear traditional leaf springs instead of the standard Musso car like coil

OTHER BUILDERS HAVE A CHOICE OF THREENGE….. MODELS IN THE MUSSO PICK-UP RA

springs. Occupants can take comfort that they are also surrounded by a total of eight safety bags and impact absorbing elements within the steering wheel and column. With Musso translating to Rhino in Korean, the new revamped pick-up offering is well named, and not just because the company has needed a thick skin over the years to deflect some barbed criticism of appearances and handling. Like its animal counterpart you certainly wouldn’t want to be in the way of a rampaging one coming at you at full charge, although design features have been incorporated in the frontal area to improve pedestrian safety as well. Clearly, the company has taken on board some of those earlier negatives surrounding the ride quality of its original line-up. Now, with all round improvements to the general aerodynamics, the fitment of eight body mounts, large rubber engine mounts helping to dampen vibration, and polyester wheel arches to help reduce road noise, the company are confident they can make serious inroads on their better known big beast rivals.

MUSSO EX The short bed offers the market entry level that is built for a hard day’s work at a competitive price. It comes with 17in. alloy wheels, a DAB audio system, six air bags, electric windows, remote central locking that includes tailgate, manual air conditioning, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers and AdBlue. WWW.RDR.LINK/BU068

MUSSO REBEL Again short bedded, it builds on the EX specification adding roof rails, floor mats, 8in. smart audio infotainment system with goggle car play and android auto rear reversing camera, leather look seats, front seats that are heated, together with steering wheel and black and silver side strips and Rebel graphics. WWW.RDR.LINK/BU069

And without these fundamental changes, it’s probably fair to say that the Musso could have quite easily gone down the same path as its animal namesake and become something of an endangered species. Simply being robust and workmanlike is not enough in this increasingly highly competitive market, with customers demanding something that also drives like a car and looks good for both work and pleasure. Clearly there are many things that we will be quite happy to see the back of as 2020 draws to a close but our Musso Rhino is most definitely not one of them! MUSSO SARACEN Adding a premium feel to the short bed offering it has 18in. alloys, leather seats, 9.2in. screen with TomTom navigation, cruise control front and rear, parking sensors and Saracen graphics. Prices start from around £22,000, rising to £30,000, and all come with a market-leading 150,000 mile or seven-year warranty. WWW.RDR.LINK/BU070

R E L I A R T E H T HOT ON

Professional Builder’s Lee Jones gets the ‘load down’ on the latest plant transportation solution from Towmate hen it comes to plant and machinery one of the biggest challenges for builders is not using the equipment, but its safe transportation. As a brand of ATE, Towmate can point to over 25 years of know-how in supplying trailers and parts, and has poured all that experience into the development of the Rhino TXDP, a unit that can boast a number of industryfirst features. The guiding principle of the TXDP design has been safety. 70 per cent of the tragic deaths that occur when loading or unloading equipment from a vehicle are attributable to the machinery overturning, with poorly secured loads and items falling out of vehicles also areas of concern. Rather than rely on traditional ratchet straps, this trailer introduces a strapless system, making for a simple, quick, and effective one-man operation. It’s simply a matter of driving the digger onto the load bed in a forward-facing position and securing the dozer into the specially constructed Load Sentry system. Similarly, thanks to gas assisted technology, a single individual can raise, lower and position the 1,400 or 1,700mm ramp and its support legs.

W

I

Excavator owners already familiar with manoeuvring plant onto trailers will be alltoo aware of the disconcerting lurch in the machine between ramp and load bed. Thanks to the TXDP double angle ramp, however, that toppling effect is reduced, enhancing the safety and confidence of the driver. Not only that, but Towmate has incorporated steps adjacent to the mudguards so that the operator can move on and off the machine whilst maintaining three points of contact at all times, reducing the risk of a fall or trip.

The wheel deal

In transit, thanks to the TXDP pivot axle system, all of the wheels are kept on the ground at any one time, providing a much smoother ride. Continuing the idea of safety on the move, a digger arm lock will prevent the boom swinging, whilst an extended drawbar ensures the arm never comes into contact with the vehicle. Often breakers and buckets will be secured between the tracks of the digger, making them vulnerable to theft, and damage. The TXDP addresses this issue with a demountable bucket locker and breaker store at the

66 NOVEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

front of the trailer. A special safety bar means that separate store can be only loaded or unloaded from kerbside, and it can be removed completely if required. Indeed, thanks to a one-trailer-fits-all concept that allows components to be added or removed, a modular design is a recurring theme. As a result, the load bed can just as easily accommodate a roller as an excavator, as well as specific equipment for a particular job. Tougher than the job that it’s designed to do is the promise from the manufacturer and that’s a pledge that is backed up with a three-year warranty, whilst features that are normally available as an option, such as LED lights, are included on the TXDP as standard, and that includes eight lashings points, each rated at 2 ½ tonne. A piece of plant is a significant investment for a small building firm, which makes ensuring that it is securely and safely delivered to the job of paramount importance, and that is what the TXDP Plant Trailer provides. Not only that but, as your arsenal of equipment changes and the work you do evolves, it is versatile enough to adapt to your needs. vehicles & plant 씱 Peter Cook of NEC Contracting is continuing a long association with Takeuchi mini excavators. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones investigates the appeal. f you want an indication of the reliability of a product then the loyalty it inspires in its customer base would be a decent barometer. As a brand Takeuchi has acquired a faithful band of followers ever since they first entered the UK market in the late ‘90s, and amongst them is Peter Cook, who has been investing in the Japanese manufacturer’s equipment from those very earliest days. As the former Managing Director of W&H Roads, the 64-year-old has over those years sanctioned a number of significant Takeuchi deals. Having retired from that business, Peter decided that it was too early to hang up his hard hat just yet, and has since set up NEC Contracting, and is now the proud owner of a Takeuchi 217R, 1.7 tonne mini excavator.

I

The Essex-based company specialises in commercial and residential groundworks, together with small civils contracts and, despite the constraints of the lockdown, has been relatively busy throughout 2020. “The day the lockdown started we were actually digging the

footings on a substantial extension to a domestic property, and we’ve kept going throughout,” explains Peter. “In the past I’ve bought Takeuchi machines from just about every weight class, from micros up to 14 tonners, and they were an automatic choice for me when we needed to invest

in a digger. In my opinion they are the best of the minis.” Introduced as the companion to the existing TB216 model, the 217R delivers the same performance as its already popular sibling, with a dig depth of 2,390mm and a dump height of 2,545mm. It’s chief attribute, however, is its manoeuvrability with a reduced tail swing that allows for excavation hard up against buildings, and other obstacles, and an extendable track frame from 900mm out to 1,300mm, offering access through garden gates and the like. Add to that a slew radius of just 730mm and you have a very nimble machine at your disposal. “I was already familiar with the TB216, and was originally going to go for that unit, but the reduced tail swing does provide additional versatility. We haven’t noticed any reduction in break out force, or power, with the short tail swing, and the unit is very stable in operation. We

vehicles & plant were excavating a footpath around an existing school building recently and being able to position the machine tight against walls or other barriers does have benefits in terms of productivity. Not only that, but I’ve been running Takeuchi’s for more than twenty years and I can testify to their reliability.” Indeed, with a design that includes a top mounted hydraulic boom cylinder, and internally routed hoses, these are units that are built to avoid damage and downtime, and withstand the rigours of site use, whilst a proven <19kW Stage V engine with 11.5kW output provides the power. It is an opinion that is shared by NEC Contracting’s experienced excavator driver, Tony Smith. “They’re very smooth in operation, have got plenty of grunt, even with the smallest machines, and you can’t fault them for reliability. I’ve been using them since the early 2000s, and I know that the first machines that I drove back then are still going strong on site.” Plant theft is a perennial problem, and with lockdown leaving equipment suddenly abandoned on many sites, a sharp rise in thefts has brought the issue back into focus. Peter has his own bitter experience of being a victim, which makes the TSS, Takeuchi Security System – which is now fitted as standard – of particular appeal. The technology will only allow programmed keys to start up the machine, and if an attempt is made with anything other than the 1 red master and 3 black user keys supplied (with the option of up to 13 keys in total) an alert is issued to the owner, operator or fleet manager. Supplied by Hertfordshire-based Takeuchi Dealer, Robert Owen, the 1,680kg unit can be comfortably transported via NEC Contracting’s Brian James trailer, and towed on the back of a pick-up, along with the addition of an Arrowhead breaker and quick hitch transforming this mini into a multi-tasker. “Given the previous experience we’ve had with the manufacturer, and the excellent service we receive from Robert Owen, we’ll be looking to make a further investment in Takeuchi, probably with a 5 tonner,” concludes Peter. “In their weight class, we’ve never found anything better.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON TAKEUCHI VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BU072 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON TAKEUCHI DEALER, ROBERT OWEN VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BU073

The end of this refill is removed with scissors before the nozzle is attached as normal. The sealant can then be dispensed using an ordinary skeleton gun and, once the refill is used up, the aluminium slug can be simply and cleanly removed and disposed of before another refill is reloaded.

Going green

As well as being incredibly easy to use, the Reload system also offers significant environmental benefits. In particular, both the cartridge and the nozzle are completely recyclable while Reload’s

Bond It’s new refillable sealant system is the sustainable choice or most of us involved in the building industry, reducing our environmental impact is an increasingly important priority. One small step that can make a big difference is taking a fresh look at your use of sealants. Every year, it’s estimated that a staggering one hundred million used sealant cartridges are sent to landfill in the UK. That equates to around 6,000 tonnes of non-degradable waste – with at least some of it being produced by the glazing industry. One company which has found an innovative way of addressing this problem is British-based, Bond It. As David Moore, Managing Director at the manufacturer of sealants, adhesives, grouts and other building chemicals, explains: “For all businesses – including those in the sealant applicator sector – the case for adopting more sustainable products and working practices has never been stronger. Aside from protecting the environment for future generations, going greener can deliver major benefits in other areas, such as potentially reduced

A prime example of this can be found in our Reload range.”

POT BLACK Through its exclusive distribution rights to EZ Street Asphalt in the UK, Red Stag Materials is making a cold asphalt pothole repair solution available to the trades. t may have taken something of a back seat of late – for obvious reasons – but the bottomless pit of pothole problems in our extensive network of highways and byways has most definitely not gone away. For its part, the Government is poised to inject millions of funds into the road maintenance sector but, on a smaller scale, the general builder now has the opportunity to play his part. It’s all thanks to the launch of a cold asphalt solution which is being made available through the builders’ merchant channel via Red Stag Materials. Unlike hot asphalt, which is normally purchased in large quantities directly from plants, cold EZ Street Asphalt 1-tonne and 22kg bulk bags have a long shelf life, meaning that builders’ merchants can stock them and sell them directly to where they are needed. In fact, the material is already being used across the country from the north of Scotland to the south of England by councils looking for an effective solution to permanently repair public roads. Grant Shewan, Managing Director of Red Stag Materials explains: “EZ Street Asphalt is a fully HAPAS approved permanent repair cold asphalt and with the 1tonne and 22kg bags uniquely available to the UK through a network of distributers. It could be an ideal opportunity for small contractors to offer effective repairs to private driveways and paths.”

refillable nature also means that any excess silicone in the nozzle doesn’t go to waste. But the green benefits don’t stop there. The reusable nature of Reload also results in a considerable reduction in the amount of waste generated and subsequently requiring disposal. “Aside from helping to reduce the enormous number of sealant cartridges currently being sent to landfill, the Reload system also delivers a significant reduction in packaging use and subsequent waste,” explains David. “In fact, compared to traditional spent sealant cartridges, a used Reload refill is up to 60 per cent lighter and 80 per cent smaller in volume. “This offers major benefits against a backdrop where site waste disposal costs are now determined by waste type and weight. It’s also particularly pertinent when we take into consideration the legal requirement for Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) on all building projects over £300,000 which seek to increase waste reduction, recovery and recycling.” Coupled with landfill shortages, and increasing site costs imposed by the Government, this will lead to increased transportation costs, as waste will need to travel further. As a further benefit, the aluminium foil packaging employed on the refills ensures that the silicone boasts twice the product shelf life of traditional cartridges. This helps to significantly “Reload is a prime example of a reduce spoilage. Plus, the reduction green commitment. Its more in packaging also sustainable nature makes it an helps to make the refills lighter and ideal choice for any organisation or individual that more space effective than uses silicones and sealants and traditional that wants to reduce their alternatives. As David environmental impact.” concludes: “As a business, Bond It has always had a firm focus on product development, and on pioneering new solutions that meet the evolving needs of the industries we serve. As a result, we continue to enhance our range with products that not only set new standards in terms of performance and technical innovation, but also environmental credentials. “Reload is a prime example of this commitment. Its greener, more sustainable nature makes it an ideal choice for any organisation or individual that uses silicones and sealants and that wants to reduce their environmental impact.” Potentially, it will also be a more cost-effective option to consider if the Government pass legislation in 2022 to tax imported plastic packaging that does not contain at least 30 per cent recycled content. With current cartridges being produced from 100 per cent virgin plastic there will be a cost increase that inevitably will be passed on to end users of these products. Switching to greener systems, like the Reload concept, will reap commercial benefits as well as tackling the increasing issue of single use plastic and its devastating effect on the planet.

SEALANT & ADHESIVE

Tibby Singh — www.TibbySingh.com

L A E S R U O Y T E S

Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh Chodha is sticking with Everbuild’s EB25

Given that there are so many to choose from these days, selecting sealants and adhesives can be confusing. Personally, I like to stick to one because if it’s not broken why fix it? Everbuild is a trusted brand that produces over 55 million cartridges a year, along with a range of PVAs, wood adhesives, fillers and building chemicals. To add to this wide range of products, the company has fittingly added a new product called EB25 The Ultimate Sealant & Adhesive to celebrate its 25th year. The silver lining to this anniversary is that the manufacturer has gifted us a product that is both a sealant and an adhesive. On the particular job I was working on, I needed to fill a gap between the plasterboard ceiling and the exposed brick wall. It was imperative to achieve a seamless finish, so I was reluctant to try a product that I’ve never used before, but there were certainly no worries about sealing the deal with EB25. The consistency is perfect, as it’s not too thick or thin, making it easy to work

I

with. A tip that has stuck with me, is to spray a bit of soapy water along the joint after applying the sealant and then running your finger over it. This results in a nice smooth finish while preventing the sealant from sticking to your finger. Alternatively, Everbuild do produce a couple of accessories to assist with this. Although I’m not usually a big fan of these, their smooth-out tool and a strip-out tool do work very smoothly.

Multi-tasker

I’ve often found with tubes that claim to be sealants and adhesives that they are good at one or the other, but not both. However, this EB25 is actually just as good when it comes to bonding. You don’t find yourself waiting around holding the material until the adhesive goes off. It creates a bond almost instantly but it does start to skin over within approximately 30 minutes. If it’s a heavy item it’s recommended to clamp or prop it in place until the EB25 cures and, once it does, it is bound like a clamp.

72 NOVEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

The product has list of other properties that are clearly listed on the tube itself, so you can see quickly if it’s suitable for the job you’re working on. It is both food safe and sanitary certified, making it suitable for food preparation areas, and perfect for sealing showers and baths. Would you believe it even works under water? That was a property that I did actually test myself, so, if you need to temporarily repair a leaking gutter, then crack on. In addition, it can be used both indoors and outdoors and is able to withstand extremes temperatures from -40° to +70° Degrees Celsius. This is an exceptionally user-friendly sealant and adhesive. The list of materials it can be used on is endless, low emissions makes it more pleasant to work with, and there’s five different colours available – black, crystal clear, white, grey and anthracite. I did use the EB25 in combination with Everbuild’s own Power Pro Sealant Gun but it would work with any similar tool. To get you out of any sticky situation Everbuild has produced its Multi-Use Wonder Wipes and Multi-Use Wonder Wipes Spray, which can be used with its Paper Glass Wipe Rolls to clean any sealant/adhesive from any surface. Then for your hands the manufacturer supplies the Everbuild Citrus Hand Cleaner if required. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON EB25 FROM EVERBUILD VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BU080

No.13 in the series

EXPLORING THE COSMOS Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, explains more about the company’s Cosmos Blade System.

Some construction cutting tasks are harder than others. Similarly, contractor requirements can also vary greatly between job to job. Therefore, it stands to reason that some blade technologies need to be stronger than others. When optimum performance is required, Makita’s Cosmos Blade System offers the ideal choice. The premium range of products have been carefully crafted to best meet the demanding needs of professional users. Additionally, the range includes reliable blades that are more suited for general application, but still available at an affordable price. To meet all types of purposes and budget requirements, the Cosmos range is split into three categories:

Quasar Whilst speed and durability are crucial, it is also essential that tradespeople, when dealing with difficult cutting projects, are able to work with precision. To this end, we have designed the Quasar Blade System: A premium solution with 3D diamond grid (3DDG) technology, to include a reinforced, fixed metal boss. Quasar blades feature a built-in silent core, which helps to reduce both vibration and noise – which is a benefit on projects where noise pollution guidelines are in place. This performance is further enhanced

through the addition of cooling holes, which help guarantee smooth cutting action, reducing fatigue for the operator and potential damage to the power-tool.

Comet Next in the collection, are the Comet range of high-quality blades, which are also fitted with Makita’s 3DDG technology, with quick start 10mm segments. The Comet is a universal blade, aimed at applications where superior quality is required.

Nebula Finally, the Nebula range offers very good quality, affordable blades for those who want something more reliable than a single-use solution. To improve productivity and speed of cut, the blade segments of the Nebula range have been laser welded onto the body of the blade to give additional strength and durability when cutting.

Diamond Grid Technology All three solutions feature our unique diamond blade technology, which helps to provide outstanding cutting performance. As such, the blades are able to cut faster and last longer than traditional products, which rely on the conventional random bonding method. In fact, thanks to its advanced design, the Cosmos

Blade System offers up to 30 per cent longer lifespan when compared to traditional blades and can operate at speeds of up to 50 per cent faster. Additionally, the Quasar and Comet ranges feature our unique 3D Diamond Grid Technology, which perfectly aligns and precisely distributes the diamonds throughout the bond during the manufacturing process. This ensures that the blade delivers optimum performance at all times and with accurate diamond segment placements, the blade can effortlessly accelerate into cuts during the initial stage. Similarly, this design choice also helps to reduce the friction emerging from the blade, which, in turn, helps to improve the system’s cooling performance significantly. At Makita, we produce a range of blades to suit every cutting job, including Rapide blade segments, which offer faster cuts into moderate or hard materials. We also supply the Enduro blade segments, which are ideal for use in mid to abrasive materials. By choosing our solutions, tradespeople are able to achieve precision work across a wide-range of materials at a low cost-per-cut. That’s why solutions like the Cosmos Blade System are ideal for tradespeople requiring reliable performance on tough jobs. TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COSMOS BLADE SYSTEM GO TO WWW.RDR.LINK/BU081

P U G N I N A CLE Metabo’s new cordless vacuum cleaner offers versatility, power and convenience A clean working environment is indispensable for health protection, and a powerful vacuum cleaner for professionals in the wood or building trade is, therefore, essential. With the new cordless vacuum cleaner from Metabo, tradesmen now have a unit that allows them to work without a cable getting in the way, and still not have to compromise on suction power. “Thanks to a powerful brushless motor, you will not notice any difference to standard mains-powered vacuum cleaners,” declares Metabo product manager, Sebastian Koch. “The cordless ASR 36-18 BL 25 M SC is classified as dust class M and provides first-rate suction power. It holds back 99.9 per cent of the dust generated, which means that professionals who are exposed to the likes of quartz dust, for example, are suitably protected.”

The new cordless vacuum cleaner ASR 36-18 BL 25 M SC from Metabo scores with a high degree of health protection in dust class M and, thanks to the brushless motor, is particularly powerful.

A clean solution

The new machine can be operated with two 18V battery packs, or one 36V battery pack, and has three different levels to which the suction power can be regulated, depending on the application. Continues Koch: “For example, if the professional uses a cordless orbital

sander that generates less dust, he can reduce the suction power accordingly, and increase the battery pack runtime in the process. In this way, he can work longer and make full use of the battery pack’s energy. A particularly large amount of fine dust is generated when sanding wood or plaster filler, for instance. The filter of the vacuum cleaner gets clogged with dust during longer applications. We also have a solution for this: the semiautomatic filter cleaning. The technology is already in use in mains-powered vacuum cleaners, now we have developed it further for cordless vacuum cleaners. The filter cleans itself

automatically during breaks, whilst cleaning can also be started manually by operating a switch.”

Extraction with automatic start/stop

The “CordlessControl” system takes over the automatic start and stop of the vacuum cleaner. Thanks to an intelligent transmitter-receiver system, the cordless tool is connected wirelessly with the vacuum cleaner. The receiver is installed directly in the vacuum cleaner and attached to the suction hose. A vibration sensor in the transmitter then detects when the machine is switched on or off. If the vibration in the machine is not strong enough, the transmitter can be attached directly to the device using the multi tape included. “If the user starts operating his cordless tool, the vacuum cleaner will automatically start in parallel and, thanks to this innovative solution, the operator is very well protected from dust”, explains Koch. For manual cleaning, it is just a matter of pressing the remote-control button on

SAFETY FOOTWEAR

Tibby Singh — www.TibbySingh.com

! P U R E L K BUC Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh Chodha finds the BuckViz Boots are a sight to behold! Buckler Boots is a relatively young brand that started in 1997 with a blank piece of paper on to which all the shortcomings which bedeviled outdoor safety footwear were poured. It’s true that young minds have fresh ideas, as Buckler Boots has proven with the birth of its BuckViz Boots, which are literally taking safety to the next step. These are high visibility safety boots which have been sight tested to in excess of 150 metres. Not only is it the first time I’ve seen anything like them, it also has you wondering why it hasn’t been done many moons ago. The concept emerged from the horrendous stats that have been frequently reported from the Health and Safety Executive regarding accidents and fatalities, particularly on constructions sites where there was moving machinery and sometimes poor visibility. It’s clearly a bright idea so I couldn’t wait to buckle up and get stuck in. My first thoughts were that they looked chunkier than my usual preference but, when I slipped into them, I didn’t expect them to be as light as they were. The reason for the weight reduction is the 100 per cent metal free design, but there is a composite toe cap and non-metallic anti penetration midsole to

I

protect you. A common problem with the top of the toe area is they wear quickly, especially from constantly rubbing on the floor whilst on your hands and knees. I’ve even had a steel toe cap fall out on me in the past, but these boots have the added protection of super tough anti-scuff protection on top of the toe.

Take to the heels

Moving to the back, a solid and robust protective heel piece wraps around the boot, providing additional support and preventing your heel from twisting. This also means that, when you’re slipping into these boots, they won’t fold in on themselves easily, whilst the slip in heel piece reduces friction. Speaking of slipping, as you would expect they’re oil and fuel resistant, but also achieve the maximum slip resistance standards, whilst the rubber outsole can withstand heats of 300 degrees for 30 seconds. These hi-vis fluorescent boots are available in three colour combinations; black

leather with hi vis yellow or hi vis orange and brown leather with hi vis orange. They are also waterproof and made from Cordura, one of the toughest man-made fabrics on earth, and already renowned for its use on products such as luggage, backpacks, trousers, and even military wear. I’d like to add that Buckler Boots also provide a number of complementary accessories – so fill your boots. These include the company’s Footbedz Insoles that give you a supreme soft step by moulding themselves to the contours of your feet, and prevent fatigue when on your feet for long periods. Furthermore, you have the choice of two types of Buckler Socks – Cool Socks to optimise temperature control for all seasons and Cordura Socks with reinforced heel and toe areas. Then there are care products like the Beezwax Leather Spray to improve water resistance and restore colour, as well as a Gel to clean and condition your shoes. CAMERA PHONES

PHOTO FINISH With more tradespeople than ever using images of their work for self-promotion – or to share on social media – Professional Construction & Architectural Photographer, Sarah Toon, reveals her secrets to taking great photos with your phone. Taking great photos for your social media on your camera phone is an art form. No one really wishes to see your hard work in shadow, bright light, unfocused or blurry photos. So here are some simple hints and tips on how to improve them. Perhaps most importantly, always frame your ‘subject’ within your phone screen – regardless whether it is a boiler, new kitchen, pipework or building site. See and look at your screen as if you were the ‘viewer’.

Then it’s time to think of four things:

Is it in shadow? Can you turn on a light? Can you use your phone flash? Are you looking into the sun or showing your own shadow? Here’s what I suggest…. You are the photographer so, as far as you can do so safely, move into the position that you need to take a great photo. If in doubt, and it’s too sunny, for instance, wait for the sun to move – a few more minutes won’t hurt. If you are in a confined space, try crouching down, or lay down if necessary, so you can photograph your work. Also, ensure there is plenty of light, although this can be edited later.

Thinking like a photographer can be hard

It’s all about ‘composition’. The art of composing your chosen subject within your frame (screen) is to show it to the best of your ability. Does the photo have mess around it? If so, move it out of the way if you can. Keep your photo focused on your work at hand. Show the viewer exactly what you are doing and not the surrounding area.

Touch your phone screen

That’s right, touching your screen will change your focal point. Change the lighting of your photo and ensure you have the correct ‘exposure’ for your photo before you take it.

Editing

All camera phones contain editing tools. So many people never dabble into the editing software within a camera phone but please, always do. Beforehand take several images at the same spot, then you can edit.

Have a play with:

cropping/straightening/zooming, sharpening, brightness, highlights, shadows, brilliance & saturation. All these, and more besides, are at your disposal within your phone. Move the sliders, play with the photos, and if you get into a muddle don’t save the edit and try again. Social media images are essential these days for showing your business in the most professional way possible. Your photos are your shop window. The gateway to your potential customers, demonstrating how well you can do your job, and often the first thing people will look at. TECHNICAL TEAM TIPS – NO 20 ROOFING

TAKE IT AS RED When it comes to battens, make sure you get what you pay for, urges Stuart Nicholson, roof systems director for Marley he lockdown in the UK has led to a huge subsequent increase in demand for treated timber for garden projects, domestic refurbishment and new build housing. This has led to concerns about the quality of some timber products coming into the market, particularly roofing battens. Whereas, in the past, a substantially cheaper price for roofing battens should have sounded alarm bells about the quality, now pricing of these inferior products has gone up, and it’s much harder to distinguish a quality batten by price alone. There have also been concerns in the industry that some battens on the market have been dipped in preservative rather than pressure treated, which is hard to detect from sight alone and can give inadequate protection against rot and insect attack. This means contractors could unintentionally be using inferior quality battens, which has serious implications for their safety and reputation. As well as supporting the dead weight of tiles and the imposed wind loads, BS 5534 graded roofing battens can also be used as a secure foothold during installation. Building control inspections are also becoming increasingly stringent when it comes to checking the right battens have been used. Non-compliant batten use could lead to contractors bearing the cost of stripping and redoing the whole roof and could also invalidate

any warranties, such as NHBC. The good news is that there are some quick and simple steps roofers and builders can take to make sure they are getting the roofing battens they have paid for: ✔ When you buy the battens, specifically ask the merchants for BS 5534 compliant roofing battens. ✔ Buy from a trusted brand or manufacturer, such as JB Red, as this will give you peace of mind that battens have consistent quality standards and guaranteed compliance with BS 5534. Our roofing experts are also easily contactable should you ever have any queries. ✔ Order your roofing battens early, to ensure stock is available when you need it. ✔ When the battens are delivered to site, open the packaging and give the battens a visual check yourself before use – see advice below.

Visual batten checks

✔ Grading stamp – Only battens that have been pre or factory graded to BS 5534 can be called roofing battens. Make sure there is an indelible stamp on the batten saying BS 5534. ✔ Third party accreditation – Look for an independent quality mark, our JB Red battens have a BBA stamp to demonstrate this. ✔ Check for defects – If you pick it up from one end, the batten should not snap, and it should also be straight

78 NOVEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

(within the agreed BS 5534 limit of 5mm distortion). ✔ Timber – The species of tree from which the timber has come from should be stamped on the batten. We only use slow grown imported redwood or whitewood for our JB Red battens. Also look out for an FSC or PEFC stamp to ensure sustainable sourcing. Colour is not a guarantee of a quality preservative treatment. If you aren’t sure about the battens you are using, ask the manufacturer to see the treatment certificates. JB Red battens are pressure treated using a patented next generation technology preservative called MicroPro, which has a unique red pigment and carries a 60-year lifetime expectancy against insect attack and wood rotting fungi (when installed correctly in accordance with the requirements of Usage Class 2). If you have any doubts at all about defects, strength or quality, don’t risk using the batten. Instead, contact the manufacturer or supplier for advice. ADE’S TOP WINDOW & DOOR TIPS

! ’ L L A C ‘ S ’ ADRIAN

No. 20

Adrian Barraclough runs Quickslide, one of Britain’s leading window & door manufacturers.

Thanks to Quickslide, you don’t need to sacrifice security for good looks (and vice versa) With dark nights closing in homeowners quite rightly become more conscious of security in their homes….sadly the fact is that burglary spikes in the winter months for the simple reason that the darker nights provide cover to would-be thieves who are prepared to force their way into our homes. However, most burglars are opportunists, and the image of a stripey shirted, masked scallywag with a bag full of jemmies and other tools, couldn’t be further from the truth. Possession of burglary tools is an offence in itself, and more often than not these scallies will take advantage of tools that householders leave around, such as ladders, screwdrivers, hammers and crowbars. Most professional burglars also case their victim’s properties before they attempt a break in and are, therefore, more likely to be deterred by windows and doors that are obviously fitted with effective locks; and the newer the doors and windows then the more likely are they to be up to scratch. However, in the past specifying high-security locks on new windows and doors could mean a sacrifice in style, as windows, such as box sash replacements and ‘new’ heritage style flush sash frames, could not be specified to the latest ‘PAS24’ certified security specification that assures the

I

most effective resistance to intruders. Now all that has changed… When your customers demand the latest high security locks for their brand new windows and doors, not only can you promise them security that will keep all but the most determined wolf from getting through the door, advances mean that you no longer have to sacrifice their aesthetic desires to accommodate the toughest security hardware. For example, a beautiful repro-box sash vertical slider that looks stunning in the setting of a period or mock heritage home, can now enjoy the full benefits of PAS24 certified locks, bringing the ideal combination of elegance and brute strength – beauty and the beast, in fact! And the attention to detail even now extends to fully mechanical joints, adding that extra element of authenticity that customers of this type of home often demand. PAS24 security can now be effectively applied to window styles that include vertical sliders and the increasingly popular flush sash frames, as well as standard casements and stylish flush sash French doors. These days, there is no excuse for not specifying the highest standards of

security to new windows and doors, including – and perhaps especially – sliding and folding garden doors, which have traditionally provided villains with an easy opportunity to break into properties stealthily. With the latest designs large span doors of all types can be fitted with high security locks, and also laminated glass to provide ultimate resistance to break ins, although most burglars prefer not to make any noise. The cost of fitting ultrasecure hardware and other measures to new doors and windows will be relatively little but your customers will appreciate your concern for their security and welfare when you explain why you recommend fitting PAS24certified locks. Sticking to this standard ensures the best performance and is easily referenced by your customers with a simple Google search. And, as always, buying your windows and doors, from a reputable manufacturer will ensure that you provide the very best for your customers. But my goodness, it’s become hard to get around town, hasn’t it? I’m talking about the traffic restrictions and road closures that have recently appeared, ostensibly in the name of making it easier for people to walk and cycle. I understand it’s not just London. Other towns and cities have also been hit with sudden anti-car measures. Not before time, some would say. Air pollution near busy roads has been scientifically shown to be harmful to health – especially to young children, whose faces are more likely to be at the same height above pavement level as vehicles’ exhaust pipes. And traffic congestion is a big problem for the economy. In the building industry alone, the amount of time wasted by workers sitting in traffic jams and tailbacks must take up a significant proportion of the average working day. However, without our cars and vans, how are we ever going to get to site, buy materials, and “Build back Better”, as the government is urging us to do? If I might make a small suggestion, it would be to target the “school run”, which comprises millions of car journeys every year, involving (usually) one parent driving one child a short distance from home to the school gate, and then home again later the same day. Given that the enrolment

criteria for a primary school is supposed to include living within half-a-mile, I cannot fathom how the bulk of these journeys can be justified. Surely these are the journeys that could better be done on foot or by bike? Most builders cannot easily walk or cycle to work. If they could, then they would. I have been cycling and walking all my life, and I do so whenever I can. But I can’t walk or cycle far with a bag of cement, or a few 4.2 metre lengths of timber. I have building mates who are doing their best to deal with the “new normal” of driving restrictions – commuting by public transport, and getting all their materials delivered. It takes a bit of planning ahead, but it can be done. It used to be possible to drive through the central London congestion charge zone free on Sundays – so you could do a tools and materials drop, and then travel by bus and tube the rest of the week. But even that small concession has been withdrawn now. Eventually the politicians will have to see sense. Perhaps when they get builders in to work on their own central London town houses, and they notice that rather large “travel and contingencies” items on the invoice.
