viewpoint quality is still the ‘buy’ word It’s yet another of those irritating phases which is clearly set to dominate our lives for many years to come, but there is no escaping the fact that individuals and businesses have had to massively adapt to the “new normal” in order to keep their heads above water. And, as a society, the digitisation of the way we work has been massively accelerated during the Covid-19 crisis.

With unprecedented restrictions in place regarding the opening of certain premises, there has been a huge focus on the way that businesses operate. In turn, this has inevitability led to end users exploring new options outside of the traditional supply chains they may have previously been reliant on – whether through convenience, necessity, or price considerations.

The construction sector is one that is far from sheltered from this change of attitude, especially as contractors have most thankfully been given the green light to keep on building throughout the pandemic and have, therefore, been heavily reliant on distributors and suppliers to make sure the products they need are available conveniently and on time.

We are aware, of course, that price is always a constant consideration in any transaction, but is it always the most important thing to the professional? Certainly not if the results of our recent 2021 reader survey are anything to go by. When we asked respondents to choose the key influencing factor in their choice of builders’ merchant, price (21 per cent) generated the lowest number of responses.

Instead, availability/choice of products (34 per cent), customer service (25 per cent) and relationship/loyalty (23 per cent) all ranked higher. What many will often forget to take into consideration, however, is that these three leading influencing factors also come at a cost to those businesses. For a merchant to employ a member of staff who has the building industry knowledge, experience, and human touch to advise and serve its customer base correctly, the investment is significant.

They’re also, in many cases, operating online ordering facilities and deliveries while still retaining either a fully or partially functioning physical store. Think about the money and time that will have gone into making that viable in comparison to a reseller that may have been set up from day dot to offer direct online purchases only, and will, therefore, have had to do very little to change the way it operates throughout lockdown.

The fact remains that there are still a significant number of benefits to buying local, not least the ease of the process involved with damaged goods or returns – something that is seldom guaranteed when buying through online resellers. The issue of counterfeit and inferior quality products is also alleviated as well as the reliance on so-called loss leaders to tempt the unwary in to making an initial purchase. Our own Jeff Howell, in his always highly pertinent column raised this very issue last month when he himself fell foul of the small print after ordering a product online only to find that he had exceeded the stated 48hr time period to report a missing part. He won’t make the same mistake again!

So, before you even consider abandoning your traditional supplier based on price alone, take some time to think of how you would feel in the following scenario. A long-term customer of yours, that you’ve been loyal to and knows you’ve invested in the expertise, knowledge, and equipment to do your job safely and professionally, asks you to quote for an extension. You spend an hour in the evening working it all out before explaining exactly what needs to be done to the customer.

Said client then gratefully accepts your expertise and goodwill but not the price you are fairly quoting and then scours the internet for the builder who provides the cheapest quote to do the work. Miffed doesn’t do it justice! That alone is worth some food for thought over a well-deserved and quality builders’ brew!

THE PERFECT FIT BMF is applauding the widespread endorsement of the proposed National Retrofit Strategy The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has expressed its delight that the consultation document has received widespread endorsement. Britain’s 28 million homes contribute 20 per cent of the country’s carbon emissions so unless these are retrofitted to make them more energy efficient, we won’t achieve a zero-carbon economy by 2050. The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) National Retrofit Strategy calls on the Government to invest an initial £5.3bn over the next four years to help kickstart the retrofit market. The benefits of this investment would lead an additional 100,000 new jobs and a reduction in householders’ energy bills by as much as £436.

Replace the Green Homes Grant with a National Retrofit Strategy, urges FMB “The misguided scrapping of the Green Homes Grant scheme sends entirely the wrong message to builders,” warns Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB. “Flaws with the scheme should have been addressed, in consultation with industry, with a commitment to training. The Government needs to be more ambitious in its thinking and set out a long-term plan to upgrade our existing homes to make them more energy efficient. A national retrofit strategy would address this need.”

Tradespeople without a licence are falling foul of strict waste disposal rules – and are putting their customers at risk – reveals a rubbish removal expert. Female Trades

A new study by GoCompare show increase in female trade entrants The results found there has been a huge 366 per cent increase in young females taking on apprenticeships in construction and engineering in the past five years.

For course starters in 2019/20, there were 10,170 females in construction but there’s still a huge difference in pay across males and females in the trades. Women are most likely to become painters, plumbers and heating engineers.

Over many years of working in the building trade as a bricklayer I have become increasingly concerned about the structural damage being caused to properties by replacement windows. Many of the old wooden windows being replaced did not have a lintel over them because the wooden frames were considered structurally strong enough to support the brickwork.

However, when you replace these windows with PVCu then you have a problem. Most companies do not inform their customers of this problem, but simply put in the new windows, take their money and go. It is only over a period of time that the problem appears. I could take you to countless properties on my own village alone where this problem is manifest. I think that there needs to be an urgent review of the regulations concerning replacement windows. ● Geoff Spratt, Bricklayer PB: Thanks for your letter, Geoff and we’ve ran your enquiry past the experts at RISA (a GGF Group Company). Here’s what they had to say:“Houses must be built with adequate support in place above openings.

Although you don’t have to specifically use a “lintel”, you must adequately support above an opening. In the past some buildings were constructed with the brickwork being built upon the original timber window frame – window replacement companies were a twinkle in someone’s eye at the time, and they thought these windows would last forever, so didn’t think of any consequences upon subsequent removal.

When the windows in these properties come to be replaced then the installer must make the homeowner aware, and either quote to install an adequate support, or ensure the customer engages their own builder in order to sort it prior to replacement of the window. At no point should a window replacement installation take place without the masonry above being fully supported throughout the works and after completion.”

Having been the victim of tool theft myself, a couple of years ago I sent you over some ideas on tackling the problem. Since then it looks like some of them have actually been taken on board by manufacturers, including building technology into the tools themselves! Hopefully the royalty cheque is in the post. Keep up the good work on the magazine! ● Jason Kent, via email PB: It is true that technology is moving fast but often the thieves are able to move faster, especially when it comes to van manufacturers.

Most of the big players will only update their vehicles once every three years as a minimum, and in that time the criminally inclined could have found a way to thwart whatever security measures are in place. The first line of defence should always be physical security – removing tools from the van, strong locks, loud alarms and the deterrent value of cameras.

There is, however, still no shortage of amateurs who are quite literally threatening to bring down the house with a rather less than professional performance.

There are, of course, very strict regulations on what gas and electric works can be conducted by the unqualified, but almost any

construction job can have hidden dangers for the uninitiated. These are hazards which time served tradespeople are well-versed in mitigating against, but not so the amateur.

Was called in to ask if I could install a second hand commercial dishwasher in a small cafe. The owner tried to see if it would work alright, and he said he’d had a few bevvies. Last month, Terry Renshaw and the other members of the Shrewsbury24 finally had their miscarriage of justice recognised and overturned by the Court of Appeal.

Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the former tradesman about his experiences.

t is a fight that has lasted a lifetime, and some of its campaigners would not live long enough to see their own vindication. Unbeknown to Terry and his companions the largely unremarkable events in Shrewsbury and Telford of 6th September 1972 would determine their destiny for nearly half a century, but there was no inkling as to its significance at the time. “We were picketing around Shrewsbury all that day and visited several sites, accompanied all the while by uniformed officers. The police actually thanked us for our conduct, wished us well on our departure, and not a single name was taken at the time,” he recalls of that fateful day. “Then, a full five months after the event, on the 14th February 1973, we were arrested. The only thing that had changed was that the strike had reached a very successful conclusion, and we had secured better terms for workers on site.”

It has been the contention of the group and its supporters ever since that the indictments were politically inspired, motivated by a bid to change picketing laws, discourage further industrial action, and part of a wider operation to characterise trade unions and their activists as extremists. Thanks to the tireless work of campaigners like

At 73 years old, Terry Renshaw is now the youngest of the group, whilst Kevin Butcher, at 87 is the oldest member. It is their tenacity in refusing to accept the judgement of the courts that has seen justice done. We asked Terry what wider impact his conviction had over those years? “None of us ever considered ourselves to be criminals and that was a stigma that we had to live with and were determined to eradicate. Official papers relating to our trial have still not been released, and we want to know why that is the case? It is evident that there had been a level of state intervention in our conviction,” he concludes, “which shouldn’t have happened. It was that knowledge that made us determined to continue to fight.”

cutting a fine figure If you’re ‘board’ with the bother of fitting PIR insulation on site then an experienced chippie has a device that can make the cut. s a company, Stephen C. Roberts and Sons is part of that time-honoured building industry tradition of passing a business through the family, and now the eponymous proprietor’s son – also called Stephen – is largely running the Salford-based firm. Indeed, with grandsons Bailey and Henry also now onboard, there are three generations of Roberts’s now wielding a saw on site, and it is a development which has precipitated the emergence of a new building industry invention.

“We’ve been in business since 1979 and I previously focused on a lot of workshopbased joinery,” explains Steve senior. “When my son took over we moved into extensions and working on bespoke house builds, and it was that change brought the R.I.C. Jig into being.”

Like so many on site innovations, it was a device born of the bitter experience of a job that builders would sooner baulk at. “Nobody really likes cutting PIR insulation boards on site because it’s a messy business and there’s dust issues,” he continues. “Even for a moderatelysized extension we’d be making use of about 10 sheets, which typically requires around 60 cuts and, with the marking out and fitting, that’s going to take most of the day.”

When the team of Lancashire tradesmen took on a substantial residential new build job that required the cutting of 120 sheets he decided that there must be a better way – and the result is his rigid insulation cutting R.I.C.

“With my R.I.C . Jig inventio n we were able to ma ke over a thousa nd cut s and insta ll all the boa rds in less tha n two days.”

Jig. “I actually had the idea a few years prior but never really took it any further,” admits the 68-year-old. “Not relishing the prospect of wrestling with that much PIR, I set to putting together a wooden prototype in my workshop with whatever scraps I had about the place.

“With my invention we were then able to make over a thousand cuts and install all the boards in less than two days – and

that’s a huge time saving. In fact, it would have saved the client up to two weeks in labour costs. Not only that, there’s virtually no fine dust produced, and the amount of waste we swept up when we’d finished wouldn’t have filled a bucket, and the only additional tool required is a tape measure.”

Just a couple of weeks later the experienced chippie had the jig made in metal to a much more precise specification, but the patent-pending design itself has remained true to the original concept – but just how does it work?

Steve describes the process: “In the first instance it’s a straightforward

question of inserting the board into the jig. The R.I.C. Jig is 100mm wide so if, for instance, you’re looking for a 300mm cut, you’d measure 200mm.

Then just measure with a tape and mark the board at either end, moving the board into position. The cutting action is made through an integral wire which is simply pulled upwards to make the initial insertion and then through the material.

“There’s no power source needed, and it’s virtually maintenance-free. All PIR boards are not of the same quality.

Those with a flat, straight foil, rather than a wrinkled surface, are easier to cut, but the device will slice through board up to 100mm thick, producing a fast, straight cut with no fine dust, and what you’re left with is a very clean and accurate finish every time.”

Steve’s invention is of such inventive

simplicity that at first he thought that there must be something already in existence that works on the same principles, but exhaustive research has proven the originality of his idea. Whilst scaling up the business has been complicated by the restrictions imposed as a result of Covid-19, he believes that it is a tool that should be indispensable to anyone who is regularly cutting insulation board.

“I’ve been selling the jigs we’ve had made so far through a local builders’ merchant,” he concludes. “The feedback has, in fact, been very positive and everyone who’s seen it work has bought one, and a contractor who works on a national basis has also shown interest. The next step is obviously to widen the market, and increase production, and we’re looking for the right partners to help us do that.”

he construction industry has been facing a skills shortage for a number of years, which is something that has been compounded by an aging workforce and the effects of Covid-19. It is an issue particularly relevant when it comes to water management, as unpredictable weather places more importance than ever on effective drainage.

The skills shortage within the construction industry is widely acknowledged, and the challenges associated with providing Covid-secure training over the last year has further exacerbated the issue. Less well documented, however, has been the growing urgency of water management training – specifically ensuring that contractors are equipped with the skills and expertise to mitigate against climate change.

Getting to grips with drainage

Increasingly unpredictable weather in the UK has renewed focus on the critical role of effective water management.

Previously 1 in 50-year storm-level events are occurring more frequently and mitigating the effects of flooding is becoming a core element of any project.

Consider, for example, the fact that one in ten of all new houses in England have been built on flood-prone land since 2013. The National Trust has also recently claimed that a fifth of its properties are at

risk from coastal erosion, extreme heat, and flooding, which further highlights the extent of the problem.

Drainage solutions, therefore, are more important than ever, and those tasked with implementing them should get to grips with the optimum solutions. This includes an understanding of the products available, as well as an awareness of the varying factors that inform water attenuation across different projects.

A flood of opportunities

Previously, developing knowledge would have taken place face-to-face in facilities such as ACO Water Management’s training academy. This allowed for indepth, hands-on learning across applications and products, but in light of ongoing social-distancing protocols, it has

become less viable.

While there is scope to return to this form of training in the not-too-distant future, the move to more remote processes has highlighted a number of advantages. First and foremost, not having to physically travel to a centre ensures that more professional builders than ever can take advantage of upskilling opportunities.

Taking time to undertake in-person training means being away from site. This is a constant balancing act for builders and could often mean facing a difficult choice over whether learning and building on existing knowledge was possible within a busy work schedule. However, the ability to log on to webinars and other e-learning platforms from home or on-site, maybe even during a lunchbreak, has widely expanded the possibilities for upskilling.

Targeted learning

The other advantage of the enforced shift to remote training has been the ability to offer more targeted and bespoke sessions. ACO Water Management’s 2021 webinar series, for example, covers a variety of different topics – from highways and rail stations, through to key considerations when installing geocellular storage tanks.

Crucially, these CPD webinars are available on demand for anyone who can’t make the live session. For those that do attend, there is the option of asking questions to specialists in that particular field. More in-depth follow-up training is also available, and in terms of providing a general awareness of the wide range of water management issues, online webinars have proven invaluable.

By working in conjunction with manufacturers such as ACO Water Management, there is even the possibility to tailor CPDs to a particular audience and topic. This level of targeted learning is best highlighted by the product and training videos on ACO’s YouTube channel. These serve as a handy tool for quick reference and ad hog learning, and there is still the possibility to receive certification for completing this content.

Building skills

Whether it’s through online learning or in-person training, building professionals should continue to enhance their skillset wherever possible. Keeping up with emerging trends and new technology will help tradespeople to stay at the cutting edge of their trade, and as we’ve outlined throughout, this is especially important in water management.

Flooding events are likely to happen more frequently, and there are a number of sustainability focused initiatives and pieces of legislation that it is important to keep abreast of. For those tasked with delivering drainage, ongoing training and CPDs are vital in achieving effective water management solutions.

rchaeological evidence shows that head protection – in one form or another – has been around since before 2,500BC. It was likely invented to protect the wearer in battle and archaeologists have found evidence of helmets made from a huge variety of materials including copper, leather and even boar tusks. The hard hat is not, then, a new concept by any means – although I have a feeling today’s helmets are rather more effective – but that doesn’t mean those of us in the industry are happy to rest on our laurels and accept that the modern hard hat represents the ultimate solution to traumatic brain injuries.

A

Accidents happen

Industry standards ensure that safety helmets are capable of providing good absorption of linear impact, something that is proven through the EN397 test which sees a linear force directed onto a helmet from height. In most instances, the helmet remains intact, thereby proving its effectiveness.

However, the assumption that the biggest risk to our heads comes from falling objects is a common misconception. In actuality, the most common type of accident to occur on-site is a slip, trip or fall, which is much more

likely to cause a rotational injury.

A rotational brain injury comes as the result of a rapid change of the rotational velocity of the head. This rapid change can be caused by a direct hit to the helmet or skull, or by an indirect hit to the shoulder leading to a rotational motion of the head and forcing a twist or sheering of the brain within the skull.

Preventing rotational injury

This is where the Mips Elevate cradle solution comes in. Swedish-based helmet safety technology company, Mips, has spent the last 25 years researching and developing its low-friction Multi-directional Impact Protection System technology, which is designed to allow the head 1015mm relative motion in all directions inside the helmet. This can redirect harmful rotational motion that would otherwise be transferred to the head, potentially causing traumatic brain injury.

This safety technology is already relatively commonplace in the sports market but until now, has not been seen in an industrial safety helmet. The newly designed Mips Elevate cradle solution has made this a reality.

Layers of protection

THE ‘RUNG’SIDE OF THE LAW The Test & Research Centre is urging the trades to be vigilant when it comes to the equipment they use on site

T

est & Research Centre, the not-for-profit testing facility for work at height equipment, has seen its fair share of dodgy ladders. But when their team was asked to examine a suspicious shipment intercepted by Trading Standards at the Port of Felixtowe in February 2021, even they were shocked at just how dangerous these products turned out to be.

The ladders were a type of telescopic standing ladder – ones that can be used in standing mode (like a step ladder) or leaning ladder mode (like an extension ladder). They were labelled ‘EN 131’, implying that they complied with the European standard for ladders.

However, missing contact details, product codes and manufacture dates, plus the presence of an illegal ‘CE’ mark, raised suspicions with Suffolk County Council Trading Standards. Within a few days, the ladder was in the test lab at Test & Research Centre undergoing an assessment.

A load is suspended from the ladder to see if it remains rigid, but it bends 100.5m – over 4x greater than the 23mm limit.

In a bending test, you’d expect the stiles to deflect up to 105mm – this ladder deflected 290mm – over 3x the limit.

There’s a whole range of tests a ladder must pass before it can be labelled ‘EN 131’, including strength tests, slip tests and cyclic tests of the joints and connections.

There are also specific requirements for materials and dimensions. This gives consumers confidence that their ladder meets basic safety standards.

The ladders in this shipment might have been labelled ‘EN 131’ but they would fail many of the standard’s safetycritical tests in spectacular fashion.

The authorities are warning the trades to source safety equipment from reliable retailers: “When you’re shopping online, it is tempting to pick up those amazing deals that you see on social media or in online marketplaces,” declares Graham Crisp, Head of Suffolk County Council’s Trading Standards. “But if a price looks too good to be true, there’s usually a reason why. We encourage people to only make purchases from reputable retailers and to check the product for conformity to standards – if these marks are missing, the product hasn’t been tested to ensure it complies with the necessary safety requirements and could be a serious risk.”

CHANGING PROFILES What’s been happening to timber? Formerly in abundance on merchants’ shelves, builders have been experiencing shortages alongside the rest of the construction sector. The Timber Trade Federation look at the reasons for the tight supply situation and options for builders. nce regarded as a commodity product in construction, timber is now a means of mitigating climate change, as it locks CO2 away in its fibre for the useful lifetime of the wood.

It’s no wonder, then, that global demand for timber is at an all-time high, never before experienced by the trade. Factors well beyond the shores of Blighty, including massive demand in Europe and the USA, where timber-frame house

building has been ramped up on an unimaginable scale, are putting a strain on UK supply chains. Some European countries have implemented log export bans, adding to problems, and in the USA forward pricing of timber is higher than

spot pricing, which suggests the general direction of travel on price in their markets and potentially beyond.

Add to this the knock-on effects from the pandemic, which have temporarily shut sawmills from time to time over the

past year and more, the sudden huge rise in demand for timber for DIY projects and home-working offices during the past three lockdowns, plus the effects of Brexit on obtaining haulage to transport deliveries of timber, and it’s easy to see why shortages of some building-critical products have occurred.

Timber is coming into the UK – in fact, the volume of timber arriving during pandemic-hit 2020 was only a little short of the total imported in 2019. Yet timber product stocks, normally refurbished over the winter months – when less building trade activity occurs – have not been rebuilt to their usual levels. Construction continued apace through the winter months as contractors rushed to catch up in between lockdowns, further compounding supply issues. This means less availability of extra stock for builders’ merchants to spot purchase, in order to keep their shelves filled to formerly plentiful levels.

Major national house builders, who forward buy materials, have been less affected as they plan their needs in advance. Builders’ merchants are now starting to change their purchasing patterns towards long-term planning. Yet timber and panel product demand is still exceptionally strong and unlikely to ease any time soon. Builders should plan their needs as far in advance as possible, as the supply situation may persist throughout the rest of 2021.

Adapting to demand

Timber products, such as OSB, P5 chipboard, and structural plywoods, are also in globally tight supply and likely to remain so, as there is little extra manufacturing capacity that can quickly open up the supply pipeline. I-joists and metal web joists are both made using structural timber and panel products, so supplies there too may remain constrained. Yet there is some light at the end of the timber tunnel. Whilst during this catch-up year we may all have to adapt to more advance thinking and working methods, the strength of demand for building and retrofitting with timber means there’s likely to be plenty of work for the foreseeable future.

Builders who can demonstrate

superior understanding of timber species and their uses, alongside their natural carpentry and joinery skills, will reap rewards from their wealth of knowledge.

Hardwoods for the kitchens market are an illustration. Hardwood worktops now come in a range of different species from lighter-shade timbers like Beech to FSC certified tropical hardwoods. If Oak supplies are difficult, can another species take its place, depending on the application? Sustainably grown hardwoods such as Red Grandis from Uruguay offer options when it comes to skirtings and architraves, for example.

Laminated hardwoods are available for applications like stair newels and windows. Expanding your choices beyond familiar species will expand your reputation for good advice to householders.

Another area of advice through which builders can underline their credentials to homeowners is through the correct use of both products and language when it comes to ‘treated timber’. This summer a new Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) will start rolling out from

suppliers to merchants and into the building sector. This means that old, nonspecific terms such as ‘green treated’ will disappear. Factually correct terminology will take their place.

Timber treated to Use Class 2 is only suitable for internal use, or where the only likelihood of the timber getting wet is, say, through an occasional leaking pipe.

Timber treated to Use Class 3 is for use outside but above ground e.g., as shed cladding or decking boards. Anything which either sits on or is used in the ground, such as the sub-frame of a timber deck, must have received a Use Class 4 level of timber treatment.

Although it may look the same, not all ‘treated timber’ at the builders’ merchant has had the same level of preservative treatment loaded into the wood. If you want the timber to last for your homeowner, then ask the merchant for timber treated to the correct Use Class.

America – land of the free, home of the brave and also, it seems, the birthplace of next generation Sawhorses. Professional Builder finds out more.

BORN IN THE USA W hether carpentry and joinery tasks are something you face on an everyday basis or just from time-to-time, a decent pair of Sawhorses is an essential piece of kit.

The combination of Makita’s innovative LXT battery technology and brushless motor means that this machine can deliver high power equivalent to corded machines – but with the added benefits of cordless. It has a no-load speed of 12,000rpm, a maximum cutting depth of 3mm per pass and rebate depth of 25mm, making light work of any task.

The DKP181 has three chamfering grooves, that can be easily aligned with the edge of the workpiece to create different groove dimensions. To ensure top results, there is a foot on the base plate that protects the material from scratches and damage. The DKP181 also benefits from ADT. It is important to make sure that measures are taken to reduce the amount of inhalable dust produced during operation. With the DKP181, this is easy when fitted with an AWS chip.

Makita’s Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS) connects the cordless tool to a compatible dust extractor via Bluetooth, so that when the tool is powered on, the extractor automatically starts – and when the tool is shut down, the extractor stops.

he construction sector has seen a massive upsurge in builders choosing materials that are easy to install and require less time on site. Whether it’s for modular building, offsite construction, or simply the need to get traditional buildings constructed and sold as quickly as possible, every builder is under pressure to get projects finished to help meet increasing demand.

Manufacturers, in turn, are looking to create high-tech products that cut down on installation times, often supplied prefinished to reduce the time that the wet trades need to spend on site.

At W.Howard Group, we have seen a huge uptake in the specification of MDF profiles across the entire industry, ranging from new-build projects with national housebuilders, right through to modular

buildings and apartment blocks. MDF is even being specified in renovation projects and for period properties, as it can be supplied in any profile, and is easily painted and finished to match any colour or décor style from Edwardian, to Georgian or Art Deco.

Take door frames and door linings, for example. Once, these products would have been manufactured out of softwood and fitted on site as part of the first fix. Then, during second fix, builders would return to site to sand, prime and paint them as needed. This traditional method is very labour intensive and, with labour costs being the most expensive part of any project build, housebuilders have long been looking for a

more cost-effective alternative to minimise the amount of time spent on site and the number of site visits.

Over the past 10 years, there has been a steady move away from traditional softwood door linings, as the sector embraced the convenience of MDF products. Unlike softwood, MDF is a dimensionally stable material that doesn’t warp or bend and comes without the knots and varying grains that are found frequently on natural timbers.

These knots are a feature of softwoods and natural timbers, rather than a defect, but frequently cause problems for builders who try to use them for doorlinings, as they need a clean, straight piece of wood that can be easily painted and finished. The different grains and knots in natural timber can result in a lot of wastage during the creation of a single door set, whereas any part of an MDF profile can be used.

primed, pre-trenched and ready to fit, making it by far the easiest and best option for builders looking for a quality product that still saves time on site.

Despite the price increases seen across the MDF sector over the past nine months, MDF has remained the number one choice specifically because it is an easy material to work with, and can be installed quickly.

This stable material is already primed and ready to paint, minimising preparation times and resulting in fewer site visits to apply the finish as the project draws to a close.

Reduce finishing times Suppliers such as W.Howard Group have taken the time benefits MDF can offer one stage further, by offering a wide range of fully finished, wrapped door linings, door frames and architraves.

TOUCH WOOD Professional Builder focuses on two women who are forging a career in woodworking

Philippa Skinner Cardiff-based Philippa Skinner retrained as a carpenter at the age of 25 at Bridgend College. She originally relocated to the Welsh capital to complete an undergraduate degree and a masters in philosophy. Having previously worked in a pub, and as a care worker, Philippa eventually started working for a local carpenter.

A progression into managing projects by herself led Philippa to make the jump to go it alone. She now specialises in alcove wardrobes and shelving as her principle jobs because it’s “what people want.” Small, terraced houses are a feature of Cardiff City Centre in particular, which makes maximising space a priority.

Overall – and very pleasingly – Philippa hasn’t experienced any issues regarding her gender within the trade.

She is very positive about her experiences and reports that most tradesmen she meets are really excited to tell their wives and daughters about her.

Philippa is really bubbly and clearly enjoys her work. When quoting for jobs she admits that she “gabbles on about all

road into carpentry has been an interesting one.

After a year of site-work she moved into theatre with the CTS Welsh National Opera where she continued her apprenticeship making sets. This continued with Bay Productions (another theatre company) for a further two years.

Leanne found the theatre work a fun and creative experience whilst the team aspect in working with metal workers and painters also appealed.

Her experience as a woman in carpentry has been “challenging” but she is grateful that she was able to get into it straight away through her connections. It has inspired her to help other women looking to get into the industry.

Always looking for opportunities to develop, she is currently doing an evening course in electrics. “You can’t be closed-minded to new things as a carpenter,” she reveals, “and I would also like to try wood turning and furniture making one day.”

Its versatility and maneouvreability on site makes the Festool plunge saw her favourite tool. She does, however, have a rule of thumb of using hand tools where possible and loves the skills involved in woodworking.

Having moved on from scenic carpentry to managing her own business, Leanne is more likely to be putting up shelving or fitting cupboards, doors and skirting, but she has retained her links with theatre companies.

The pandemic has forced her into the workshop a bit more as she has, of course, respected the rules enforced by Covid-19. It has also blunted any opportunity to take on an apprentice, but she remains committed to supporting other women coming into the field by offering advice over the phone or sharing contacts.

Going forward, Leanne hopes to continue to grow her business and remain self-employed but, importantly, she wants to change the way people view tradespeople and leave a positive impression of women in woodwork.

Regular Professional Builder contributor Mark Humphreys hits the deck

ALL HANDS ON ING K C E D I was asked to supply and fit a raised composite deck to the rear of a house and so went on a hunt for the best product. What I found were a range of composite decking companies all selling similar products but all varying on guarantees. The product I plumped for in the end was called Silvadec. The manufacturer’s credentials looked good and the product sounded just what I was looking for.

The decking board pattern I chose in this instance was wood grain, so it stepped away from the traditional groove decking look which, quite frankly, in my opinion, looks a little dated now. To keep the cost down I used treated timbers from a building supplier and made a frame. I was raising the floor level by about 180mm, to which I was attaching the decking boards. The boards I used were 200mm x 20mm x 4m. They were solid and heavy, which is just what I wanted.

They cut like a dream and, unlike some timbers, didn’t chip or splinter on the edges. You could take fine cuts too if required and still have the same result.

The units are held with a clipping system that is simple to use and also gives you the required gap between boards. The decking is made with grooves along the edges, so the clips are never visible too, which made the overall look incredible.

The decking was easy to use and the finish is beautiful. There are a range of colours to suit as well. This particular product comes with a 25-year guarantee is non-slip in the wet, as well as being environmentally friendly. The makers claim it is also anti fungi, and will not be affected by wood eating insects, so it’s a Dec without the Ant then eh? (see what I did there?)

It feels like a quality hardwood and

apparently is maintenance-free so, all in all, it’s a highly recommendable product with a superior finish that I believe anyone with a basic knowledge would be able to cope with.

On the deck I installed I used an aluminium capping for the front edge, which only adds a non-slip element but also hides any slight discrepancies with the cuts to the front edge.

There are also other innovative ideas, like lighting strips that lock in between the boards too – a smart and classy option for outdoor lighting systems.

Overall it’s a very nice product and one that is best described in the age old saying ‘you get what you pay for’.

W

ith the warmer months just around the corner, it’s the ideal time to take on outdoorbased decorating projects such as improvements to exterior masonry and woodwork, which are likely to have felt the full force of the winter weather leaving them in need of some TLC. But with so many factors to consider when it comes to exterior projects, it can be easy to overlook the key elements which make all the difference to the outcome of a job.

Choosing the right product One of the most important considerations when it comes to planning an exterior project should be the product itself.

Bearing in mind what the substrate type is, as well as how long the finish needs to last, and how quickly the job requires completing – together with external factors such as footfall and exposure to pollution or UV rays – is essential when specifying the right product for the job.

For example, if an exterior masonry job needs to be completed quickly and the building won’t be exposed to extreme conditions, a product like Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth would provide the ideal solution as it’s designed for everyday conditions and is re-coatable in just three to five hours. Preparation, preparation, preparation Once the ideal product and colour scheme have been chosen, it’s vital to take time to prepare the surface properly.

The first step should be to check the condition of the surfaces, particularly as these can be damaged in the cold and wet conditions regularly experienced throughout winter – and if these aren’t correctly dealt with, they can have a big impact on the quality of the finish.

Mould and mildew are common issues when it comes to exterior surfaces, and they won’t simply go away on their own – they need to be treated with the right solutions. It’s important to invest in a good quality fungicidal wash when working on surfaces susceptible to these issues, and pre-treat them before painting.

Moisture is another common problem

encountered when it comes to exterior projects, with rain and heavy snow causing hairline cracks to appear as surfaces expand and contract. When these cracks are identified, they need to be filled and matched to the surrounding area – choosing a ready-mixed masonry filler that is quick-drying will help to save valuable time on site.

Why would you choose a specialist sealant for each specific job?

There are a range of factors that can affect how a sealant performs, so choosing one that has been specifically formulated for the job at hand ensures a long lasting, high-quality finish can be achieved. For example, some applications, such as glazing, require a sealant with a degree of elasticity to cope with movement in the joint. For bathroom and sanitary sealants, durability and mould resistance are key factors.

What are the different types available?

Part of the reason why choosing the right product can be tricky is that there are many different chemistry types, such as silicones, acrylics and MS Polymers. The properties of each mean that they are suited to different applications.

Silicone sealants are versatile and generally adhere well to a wide range of construction substrates. Silicones have excellent UV and colour stability and offer excellent temperature and water resistance, elasticity and durability. Finally, there are a number of specialist sealants such as fire cement and flue sealant that have been formulated specifically for those applications, where a

What needs to be considered when choosing a sealant?

It is important to keep in mind the environment and requirements of the application. Some basic factors such as interior versus exterior use can help narrow down the choice but it is also important to consider the materials used, the temperatures it will be exposed to, the flexibility required, the level of UV and

THE FLOOR IS YOURS James Burton of Bradite examines what is involved when undertaking the painting of both domestic and industrial flooring.

egardless of the floor you’re painting site preparation and product selection are the keys to success. It is important to remember that not all floor paints are the same. Generic products include alkyds, polyeurethanes, epoxies, single pack, twin pack, water-based, solvent-free, moisture cure, chlorinated rubber and more. They may be described as domestic, industrial, garage, hard wearing, tough and flexible. James provides his advice for selecting the correct product for the job: For domestic use, you may require a quick drying, low odour product that is easy to apply such as a single pack, cross linking water-based paint. For a light industrial situation, the coating should be hard wearing, grease resistant and able to cope with light to medium traffic. A single pack polyurethane, or a water-based

cross-linking product may work well.

For heavier traffic areas, such as a workshop floor where oil and grease are present, you could try a moisture cure, chlorinated rubber or twin pack epoxy. To achieve quick-drying and recoat times, try a water-based cross linking moisture cure or chlorinated rubber. In a working environment, such as an area for food preparation, you should use an odour and solvent-free product. Consider waterbased cross linking or twin pack waterbased epoxies.

There are certain circumstances where the coating must resist specific chemicals.

In these cases, identify the chemicals and check the coating suitability directly with the product manufacturer.

In settings where regular deep cleaning is required, such as a brewery or kennels, consider chlorinated rubber or twin-pack epoxies.

Substrates

Whether it’s concrete, steel, timber, or something else, the substrate upon which the coating is to be applied is critical.

When choosing a coating, consider whether the substrate is new or aged, inside or outside, or previously covered with a different coating.

New concrete should be left for a minimum of 30 days before painting to allow time for it to completely dry out. This can be checked by laying a rubber mat on the floor and leaving it overnight. When removed, if the floor is discoloured or condensation is still visible, then moisture is still present, and the floor should be left until fully cured.

New concrete should also be checked for laitance, a milky deposit on the surface usually caused by excess water in the mix.

failure of any coating. This can be removed by blasting or acid etching.

Power floated, shiny or unpainted nonporous concrete flooring should be thoroughly blast cleaned, ground, acid etched or primed using an adhesion promoting floor primer before applying floor paint. The correct application of screeds is important so check with the manufacturer to ensure the screed is suitable for overcoating.

Turning to timber, softwood knots should be wiped and sealed using knotting compound or aluminium primer.

Resinous hardwoods should be wiped with methylated spirits prior to priming with aluminium wood primer. The moisture content of the timber should be below 15 per cent. Damp wood should never be painted as this will give rise to blistering, flaking and cracking. Damaged, rotten and darkened timber should be repaired prior to product application.

When covering previous and existing coatings, if possible, identify the existing product and check its compatibility with

any new coatings. Existing coatings should be well adhered to. Any flaking, damaged or loose material should be removed back to a firm edge. Substrates should be clean, free of oil, grease and dust and completely dry before application of any product.

Preparation

Clean with high pressure wash and sweep to remove all loose debris.

Degrease using an industrial degreaser and rinse. Lightly abrade the surface, blast or acid etch, vacuum to remove all dust and ensure the substrate is completely dry prior to application of the new coating. With power floated floors, once the surface is cleaned, they can be prepared by vacuum blast, grinding or diamond grinding, acid etching or the use of adhesion primers.

Application

With product selection and preparation now complete, we can move on to application.

The method of application will depend on the product selected and the manufacturer’s instructions. As with any application, it is important to understand the product’s recoat, drying, and curing times.

WITH In the next instalment of our series, we asked Chris Fletcher, Technical Services Chemist for Thompson’s at Sherwin Williams to explain more about the company’s One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Our One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal works to protect and seal high traffic, exposed areas such as patios and driveways. It protects block paving, flag stones, sandstone, limestone and granite from water ingress and subsequent damage – as if water is left to seep in, the substrate will soften and over time the surface can become uneven.

HOW TO APPLY IT The first step is to make sure that the surface is clean by removing any dirt and contaminants.

Using a stiff wire brush, remove any loose debris like dust, moss and cement – or for larger surfaces, a jet washer can be used. Next, Advanced Patio and Block Paving Cleaner should be applied to remove dirt and grime and kill mould and algae – as well as protect against regrowth. Leave for 15 minutes before washing the product off and leaving the surface to dry.

Once the surface is completely dry, the One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal can be applied. For the best results, we recommend using a brush as this will give you a better chance of achieving full coverage – and creating a

thicker, tougher layer of protection that can withstand everyday use. However, for a faster process the product can also be applied with a long pile roller.

One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal will be touch dry within just one hour and it can be walked on after four hours, so you can get the job done in one day. It is important to avoid heavy foot traffic or parking vehicles on the surface for a further 24 hours, to ensure it is fully cured through.

Due to its solventbased formulation, the product should be removed from tools and equipment immediately after use with brush cleaner. Always speak to your local authority to find out how waste can be disposed of safely.

SEAL THE DEAL! A Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh brushes up on his painting skills with Ronseal Trade’s 10 Year Woodstain

s a self-employed carpenter and joiner, I tend to find myself doing tasks that don’t exactly fall into the carpentry and joinery category. For example, if I fit an external timber door, I would usually treat it myself, and I actually find it satisfying to see the job through from start to finish. When it comes to choosing a wood preserver it can be overwhelming as there are so many products out there these days.

I was working on a summerhouse project and took the opportunity to wet my brush with some Ronseal Trade 10 Year Woodstain. Many know it as a household name, but I wanted to know if it actually “Does exactly what it says on the tin?”.

Wood stains are not a magic material that will make any project look amazing, so preparation is the key. That means any wood needs to be sanded first, preferably with 120 grit paper and then wiped down with white spirits and then left to dry. As they say, failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

I popped open the sealed lid, gave it a mix and decanted it into a paint kettle.

This is not my specialist area but this is recommended with many stains, varnishes and paints to prevent cross contamination. Whilst I put the kettle on for a cuppa, I had a quick read of the instructions, which is unusual for me but I’m glad I did. It is recommended to use a synthetic brush as the smoothness and springiness of the bristles help to achieve an even finish.

From my very first brush stroke in the direction of the wood grain, I knew that it would cover well. This was after just one coat and there are three coats that are recommended, leaving four hours between each coat. I had a 2.5 litre tin which states it has a coverage of 15m2, taking all three coats into account. It is water-based, so dries quickly and is easier to clean the brushes at the end of the day.

To add another layer to this review, I was impressed to hear that Ronseal Trade Products are the first woodcare range to receive a BBA accreditation. This means the product has been approved by the British Board of Agreement who are the UK’s leading construction products certification body. In order to get this stamp of approval it’s put through various

Choosing the right sealant and adhesive can reduce call backs, prevent damage, and make sure your installation won’t be compromised.

P

lastic fittings are an integral part of most bathroom, kitchen and toilet installations and play a crucial role in stopping noxious and toxic gases entering a home or building. In fact, plastic fittings are so popular that some manufacturers, like Glasgow-based McAlpine Plumbing Products, produce over 5,000 products, all designed to bring quality and performance to builders, plumbers, and heating engineers across the world. From plastic traps to waste pipes, from WC connectors to wet room solutions, there is a product for all applications.

Although the products are produced to stringent quality standards, it is important that some chemicals, in particular certain acids, are not used on plastic fittings. Certain silicones release acetic acid upon curing and you will know it from a strong vinegar-like smell.

“We decided to test sealants and adhesives to see what would work best with our range – and that’s when we decided to invest in our own,” explains Ross McAlpine. “So, we created MACXSEAL, and it is the only sealant and adhesive tested and approved for use on McAlpine Plumbing Products. It bonds, cures, and seals quickly and has a high strength grab. It is resistant to UV radiation and general weathering – and importantly, it won’t compromise the quality of your installation either.”

GREAT BARRIER RELIEF Stuart Nicholson, Roof Systems Director from Marley, explains how a new, easy-to-install fire barrier can help reduce the risk of fire spreading through roof voids

ire barriers are an unseen, but very important, product when installing a pitched roof on terraced or semi-detached housing. When a roof is compartmentalised, fire stopping is required between the top of the party wall and the roof covering, acting as a seal to prevent spread of flames and smoke between properties in case of fire.

However, there is some concern that some modern homes could have inadequate, incorrectly installed and, in some cases, no fire barriers at all. In terraced or semi-detached properties, this increases the risk that fire could spread rapidly through roof voids from one home to the next.

Why are fire barriers inadequate or incorrectly installed?

Fire stopping is often achieved with a flexible mineral fibre quilt or sock, but a potential fire passage still exists at the line of the roofing battens, above the rafters, which can span across the junction between properties. There are fire barrier products available on the market to close this gap, but these can be bulky and difficult to install in line with the roof tiles, especially with deep profiled tiles. It is also difficult to see if the fire protection is in the correct place once the tiles have been laid. This means there is a risk that a fire barrier is present, but it may not be installed correctly, or might not be sufficient to fully seal the gap.

How can contractors reduce their risk?

The new, easy-to-install, Marley Roof Defence fire barrier gives builders the confidence that it is correctly fitted and will provide full fire protection, from one roof to the next, achieving up to a 60minute fire rating. It features two strips of intumescent material bonded at 90

degrees, with an inverted T design, that can simply be installed under tiles and between roof battens to close all gaps in the event of fire.

How is Roof Defence different to other fire barriers?

Roof Defence has an inverted T intumescent seal, which expands when activated by heat, filling the space between roofing battens and sealing all spaces under the tiles, slates, and other roofing elements. The double intumescent strip and inverted T design, make it much more effective at filling both horizontal and vertical spaces.

Whereas some other systems are rigid, Roof Defence is flexible, lightweight and

is supplied on a roll, so it can easily be taken onto a roof and rolled out over the party wall. This also makes it easier to use on uneven surfaces.

Using a compressed mineral fibre option can affect the way the roof covering is fitted. This is because, to be securely fixed, the projecting nibs on the underside of tiles must have space to hook on the rear face of the roofing batten. A compressed mineral fibre quilt, or sock, occupying this space can interfere with this. It can also block important ventilation paths on large, compartmentalised roofs, causing additonal ventilation problems.

Roof Defence ensures clearance until activated by the heat of a fire, so it doesn’t affect the fit of the roof covering or block ventilation.

When it comes to fire stopping in the roof, often limited details are given in Building Regulations, so sometimes the responsibility is on builders to ensure correct detailing. Roof Defence is designed to make life easier because it removes any confusion and provides assurance that it has been fitted correctly.

It has outperformed all fire testing requirements and fills every void from the party wall to the bottom tile, meaning smoke and fire cannot pass through.

FULL OF FAITH Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh gets to grips with a Faithfull Bar Clamp and 11in. Philadelphia Brick Trowel

aithfull are a hand tool brand that have been going since 1989 and now offer the trade market over 3,500 products. It sounds like they’ve gone from strength to strength, so I was interested to see how a couple of their products perform.

In one hand I was testing the Faithfull 300mm Bar Clamp.

At first sight I was quite concerned about how much plastic has been used on the body but found out that they are made from Heavy-Duty ABS plastic. It is a recycled plastic compound that is itself entirely recyclable. The bar itself is made from a high-tensile steel, which feels solid and doesn’t have any flex.

The handle is ergonomically designed and feels effortless when pumping. I was also impressed with the release trigger, which you simply press down on with your thumb instead of pressing it in. Another exciting feature is that the clamp can rapidly be turned into a spreader by releasing the tool-free head, which ensures it locks into position, and reversing it on

Now, I know I’m a chippy and not a bricky but, being self-employed, I’ve quickly had to learn other trades, and I’ve enjoyed picking up tools I wouldn’t usually use.

They do have cushioned jaw pads to protect the workpiece from getting damaged and also have vertical and horizontal grooves. This prevents any slipping when you are clamping anything from one corner to the other corner.

Unlike some other clamps these won’t slip out and get lost as they are firmly engaged into position.

They do look slightly bulky, but when the clamping force is almost a quarter of a tonne (230kg) you can understand why they have that extra muscle. These clamps have a guarantee of 5 years, so it’s reassuring that Faithfull has full faith in their own tools.

When I started using tools like these I thought that a trowel is just a trowel and they all do the same job. I was wrong, and there is a difference, just like there is with a good saw and a bad saw.

I was wondering why it was called a Philadelphia Pattern Brick Trowel and little research found out that it has a sharp, square heel and broader blade, making it ideal for laying concrete blocks as it holds more mortar. Whereas a London Pattern Brick Trowel has a rounded heel, and smaller blade, and is more commonly used for laying bricks.

Anyway, seeing as I didn’t have any blocks to lay there was nothing stopping me from laying bricks with it and I guess it meant I could put more spread on and get more bricks laid quicker. No matter how much mortar is on the trowel there is no flex due to the solid tempered and ground blade, which is forged in one piece.

A soft grip handle, with a high lift design to save your knuckles, makes it very comfortable in use. The handle also incorporates a hardened end cap for tapping bricks and blocks.

ALL GUNS BLAZING Tibby Singh is trigger happy with Senco

recently wrote a review on Senco’s 55mm High Speed and Heavy-Duty cordless Auto-feed Screwdrivers.

Some may size doesn’t matter, but when you’re working with bigger wood it does. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see Senco’s NEW DS722-18V High Speed Auto-feed Screwdriver that screws up to 75mm.

When I need to assemble or fix something rapidly that requires 75mm fixings the first thing that comes to mind is a nail gun. However, a nail cannot replace a screw in applications when you’re wanting to clamp two pieces of material together tightly. I was recently fixing a summer house and needed to use screws that were longer than 55mm. When you’re trying to hold the timber and screw simultaneously it can become frustrating. With Senco’s Autofeed Screwdriver it speeds up the application enormously and I was screwing the timbers together with ease.

It’s not only great for 75mm screws, but it can also be used for driving anything as small as 25mm screws. It can be quickly adjusted to other

measurements via a locking pin without the use of any tools. There’s a depth gauge on the side of the tool and, once it’s set, it is locked into position, ensuring the setting doesn’t change accidently.

Thanks to the nose piece design you will also know exactly where the screw is going to be screwed.

When driving longer screws it’s natural to start slower than usual and that can still be done with the Auto-feed. On the other hand, the trigger can also be locked into position so you’re not having to keep pressing the trigger. This is ideal when using the DuraSpin ExTPro attachment, when screwing into floors and ceilings. It saves your back and knees, as there’s no more kneeling down. I used it when putting some extra screws into the floor of the summerhouse and the job was so much easier.

Another positive with this machine is that it has the option to run at 2,500 RPM or 1,600 RPM. This means that, when it

comes to screwing into tougher material – such as wood and metal – it can be slowed down, which prevents the screw from burning out.

The reverse function allow you to take a screw out by simply removing the collar, whilst this feature can be used to bury screws in flush if needed. The collar would also need to be removed if you ever wanted to change the bit, and the two provided are the Phillips bit and the Square Head drive. The Phillips is perfect for when using dry wall screws and the Square Head drive is exceptional when it comes to screwing into harder materials. I admire how Senco provide screws with Square drive which ensure a good grip and prevents any camming out. The brushless motor means it will last and it runs off a 18V, 3Ah battery, with an indicator to allow you to keep an eye out when it’s running low. It also has a hook on the side which means you can hang it off something without having to bend down, and there’s a handy light. I think I’m hooked on this Senco myself. It’s an absolute pleasure using this machine and it makes work feel like play!

Honest John Vans is urging the Government to listen to the nation’s motorists and replace the current road tax system with one that is fairer and simpler for all. The call comes as the first submissions have been made to the Parliamentary Transport Committee’s inquiry into the future of road pricing.

The Westminster committee has been established to find a solution to what is expected to be a £40billion black hole in revenue as a result of the increased uptake of electric cars and vans. The Government has committed to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030; however, with electric cars and vans being exempt from road tax VED (vehicle excise duty) and fuel duty, it will result in a huge decline in Government revenue.

Huw Merriman MP, Chair of the Transport Committee has admitted “something will have to change” with ‘pay-as-you-drive’ being one of the schemes under consideration.

Our survey said Honest John Vans and Heycar has commissioned extensive joint research into the future of road tax by consulting over 10,000 car and van drivers on their views on what the future of VED should look like.

They discovered that motorists overwhelmingly favour a wholesale overhaul of the system – to make it fairer and easier to understand for all.

One in five (19 per cent) favour the introduction of a pay-per-mile system of road charging. At the same time, over a quarter (28 per cent) of drivers say they would like a flat-rate of vehicle tax introduced – resulting in petrol, diesel, EV and hybrid owners paying exactly the

same. An increase in fuel duty was supported by 16 per cent while road tolls emerged as the least popular option – favoured by just 8 per cent. The findings also revealed that two out of three motorists were unaware that the consultation is even taking place.

As for the van and drive itself, it is hard to find any discernible faults. All electric vehicles take a little adjustment from the off, but Peugeot have cleverly dialled back on the often-startling instant response to make for a smoother ride in general. You can accelerate to 30mph before you know it, although it’s fair to say our vehicle came unladen, and there was a noticeable tail off at higher speeds.

Nevertheless, given the weight of the batteries, Peugeot have done well to maintain over a tonne of payload on all versions, ranging from a 1,001kg up to 1,226kg. It can also tow up to 1,000kg and interior load space, depending on wheelbase, is up to a respectable 6.6m3.

Charging with a 100kW fast charger will top up the larger battery from 15 to 80 per cent full in around 45 minutes.

maximise performance, that you first comfortably familiarise yourself with the various driving modes. There are three with the e-Expert. The least powerful, Eco limits top speed, cuts off the air conditioning and throttles back power to just 82hp in a bid to extract the last drop of range. The default mode, Normal produces 109hp and sticking with this for most of our journey it was never found wanting. There’s a Power mode that unlocks the full potential of the electric motor but, of course, acceleration comes at a price, not least to those allimportant anxiety levels.

One of the best things about electric is the smooth and almost insulated bubblelike operation, with no gears to worry about – simply, Park, Neutral, Drive and Reverse – all selected by a simple toggle.

There is also a B mode which ramps up the regenerative braking for more pronounced slowing when the foot is removed from the accelerator, which again is probably the go to normal daily driving position.

One of the issues we have had previously when driving the Diesel version of the Expert has always been the slightly claustrophobic cab compared with

its competitors, and it seems we may have to wait a bit longer for a full redesign with only small alterations made to accommodate the electric info data.

The driver seat is pretty rigidly set and, although we didn’t try (social distancing and all that) one wouldn’t like to contemplate the prospect of three burley builders packed in on a long journey.

Storage is a bit limited too.

For now at least going fully electric is an option which all businesses can weigh up and, despite the significant improvements consistently being made to range, and impressively low running, maintenance and servicing costs (The eExpert comes with a standard three years or 100,000 miles warranty), it clearly won’t suit the daily requirements of everyone involved in transporting men and materials. But if you are thinking of making the leap in the not too distant future then be sure to call in an Expert first!

Professional Builder welcomed the opportunity to get more “acCUSTOMed” with Ford’s popular mid-sized van offering.

I

t might be well into its sixth decade but, in simple van terms, the Ford Transit has never been remotely close to being classified as in the vulnerable category. In fact, it appears to have had a built-in immunity to competition ever since its launch way back in 1965, and latest sales figures suggest that it is in the best shape of its life, outperforming competitors half its age. And, talking of shape, it is the Custom – the medium-sized van offering in a massive portfolio of Transit configurations – that contributes most to making it – amazingly – Ford’s third bestselling vehicle after the Fiesta and Focus.

It first arrived on the scene almost a decade ago now, but a full face lift in 2018, and a constant round of updates and revisions, make it the go-to vehicle for a vast array of multi-tasking tradespeople – not to mention, of course, all those home delivery carriers which have been such a feature of the Covid crisis. In fact, way back when we were coming out of the first national lockdown Ford very carefully negotiated the rules and regulations to enable a small press contingent to road-test vehicles by

making a scheduled visit to a food bank in the capital city.

One good deed leads to another, of course, and we jumped at the opportunity to take a Custom on an extended loan to see why it has other leading van manufacturers eating their own hearts out. Ford has long had a nose for design trends and the front of the latest Custom is now based on its passenger cars, which also applies to an upgraded interior with the higher spec models featuring the multimedia system and the latest Ford Sync3 voice control system.

The Transit Custom is available with a Powershift automatic transmission

In terms of body styles, the Custom comes in L1 and L2 wheelbases, both offered with HI and H2 Roofs. All come with double sliding doors and 50/50 split rear doors, with a tailgate offered as an option. Power is provided from a fuel saving EcoBlue 2.0 litre diesel unit which offers four different levels of horsepower and six speed manual or Powershift automatic transmission. Load volume is competitive for a mid-sized panel van at between 6.0m3 and 6.8m3, whilst the largest version will accommodate an impressive 8.3m. The bulkhead on the regular panel van has a useful load-through facility for longer items to slide under the passenger seat, enabling pipes etc up to 3m long to be carried safely and out of temptation. A sturdy hard rubber floor liner with tie down rings set in the floor, and lower walls, are useful in preventing materials from flying around in the back, whilst a number of features, including extra bright LED load area lights, and an integrated roof rack capable of carrying up to 350kg, are optional extras.

There’s plenty of storage space in a very accommodating and comfortable threeseater front cab with the passenger seats flipping up to reveal hidden compartments that can accommodate a laptop or small toolbox. And with all those valuables you will want a reliable alarm, with two options which are standard on Limited versions and above.

Thanks to a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating since launch in 2012, the Custom has long been a benchmark within the sector, but the latest version takes it a step further with Ford’s ESP Electronic stability programme designed for its larger vans with side wind mitigation technology built in. Al models are front wheel drive, and you can expect around 47mpg driven well.

And talking of which, the long and winding road out of lockdown isn’t quite done with yet, but you would be hard pressed to find a vehicle better equipped to help you find some light at the end of the tunnel.

This month, Quickslide’s Ade looks at how windows and doors can be the fix or fail of add-on space During the past year or so we have adapted our homes, to create more space, more flexibility and perhaps even more separation, as locked-down families created more space and zones for working, exercise, study, relaxation and entertainment and, actually, just to have a break from each other.

The demand continues for home extensions, loft conversions and even independent garden rooms and annexes, and this shows no signs of abating. But as you would expect me to urge, don’t forget the glazing when you are helping your customers put their designs together, because the windows and doors chosen can turn a good space into a great one – or even a massive fail.

Space and light are the main drivers for extensions, conversions and garden rooms, and careful thought about the types of windows and garden doors, can make a huge difference to how successful the new space is.

Garden Doors…

High on the wish list for many homeowners are bi-folding doors, and why not? They can transform a space from being a stuffy dark room into a bright, attractive area that can directly

connect the house to the garden. But in tighter spaces, the folding mechanism of a bi-folding door requires space to operate that may severely restrict smaller room and patio layouts. If lateral space is available, install a sliding door instead.

The latest aluminium framed sliding ‘patio’ doors are magnificent. The advantage of these over bi-folds is simple: even with the best of British weather they will be closed most of the time, and sliders simply offer minimal framing and, therefore, the least obstructed view at all times.

And for smaller openings, don’t discount good old fashioned French doors. They are often a better choice than smaller bi-folds, offering just as wide an opening but with a tad more style.

Windows…

The balance between light and ventilation must be considered for windows. Larger unfettered glass areas will increase heat build-up, which should be offset by ventilation.

Like most things in life, balance is everything! Choose just enough openers for decent ventilation but which still allow the clearest view in and out.

Hardware…

Don’t stint on security. Garden rooms and annexes might be a target so make sure that the locks and handles and even the glass (choose laminated), are top spec to protect your valuable computers, gym gear and other expensive kit.

Glass…

There is no such thing as ‘standard’ glass and building and installing something new offers the opportunity

to ‘tune’ the windows and doors to be more fit for purpose. Whilst the standards of thermal insulation are defined by the Building Regulations to prevent heat loss, you can choose solar control glass when speccing garden doors and especially windows that are south and west facing, to reduce heat gain. They won’t stop heat build-up entirely but they will reduce it and it’s worth thinking about.

For work and study rooms near noisy roads, railways or neighbours, if you are piling in the wall and roof insulation to counter this, have a look at noise control glass, which is widely available.

And as always, make sure you buy your windows and doors from a company that can give you all the answers you might need!

Apparently one of the leading search words for online home searches is now “garage”.

Not that buyers are looking for somewhere dry and safe to keep their precious vintage car, oh no. Most garages on existing houses are far too narrow for modern cars. You might just about be able to drive in, but you won’t be able to open the car door to get out of it.

No, garages are at a premium because they can be converted into offices or other home work spaces.

Care is needed, though.

Converting a garage onto a habitable space does not usually require local authority planning consent, but in some cases it might.

In some urban areas, for example, the conversion of a garage is viewed as losing a parking space, which might have implications for highway safety.

(Those will be the “home offices” that look nicely finished on the inside, but which unaccountably still have a steel up-and-over garage door on the outside.)

Lots of garages get used for noisy children’s hobbies. Table tennis is a common one. As is musical instrument practice. This might be fine in the summer months, but it’s no fun in the winter. I wonder how many budding musicians have given up because of being banished to a draughty, uninsulated,

windowless garage.

Another pandemic favourite search term is “garden”. All those high-rise flats look great on plan. And trendy architects in the post-war period were keen to rebuild Britain in the model of European cities. You don’t need your own garden, was the philosophy, because you’ll be surrounded by beautiful green public spaces, cared for by professional gardeners.

Well, the pandemic has finally put that idea to bed. After a year of being cooped up in a flat, and only allowed out occasionally, the appeal of a private garden has never been greater. The market for sheds, garden lodges and other outdoor shelters, has grown correspondingly. All with power supplies and some with heaters.

The idea that we can now entertain friends, and have family gatherings again – as long as we do it outdoors – will only increase the importance of the domestic garden. And of course a paved area is far better than a lawn for that kind of use. Timber planters are attractive, and make the vegetation easier to manage.

The pandemic has been a rubbish time for most people, of course it has. But we builders are adaptable, and there are opportunities to be had, even in these difficult days.

RHINITIS...

THIS MONTH, GP ALICE FITZGIBBON EXAMINES A CONDITION THAT IS A COMMON COMPLAINT – THE BLOCKED, RUNNY NOSE.

Rhinitis itself as a condition is not harmful. As I mentioned before, people seek help because it is often upsetting their quality of life. In some cases, avoiding any triggers identified and starting to use a nasal rinse spray made of salty water can really help symptoms settle down.

These can be bought over the counter or made up at home.

If symptoms are severe, the GP may prescribe a steroid nasal spray to try and reduce the inflammation. These sprays need to be used on a daily basis and do take 6-8 weeks to fulfil their best effect. I often have patients complain to be that the spray did not work so they stopped using it after a week – this is a waste of time. If you have a steroid nasal spray the best thing you can do it stick with it for last two months before writing it off!

In some cases, non-allergic rhinitis can be linked to other problems such as nasal polyps, sinusitis (inflammation or infection of the sinuses) and middle ear infections. The treatment for nasal polyps will still include nasal steroids. Sinusitis and middle ear infections can often be managed with painkillers; occasionally antibiotics may be prescribed to help with So why does this happen? longer lasting infections.

Non-allergic rhinitis can be difficult to diagnose as there is no test for it. Your GP will ask many questions to ensure there are no obvious triggers for the symptoms. People often come to the GP as they are fed up of their persistent symptoms and the effect they are having on their quality of life. Constant congestion, sniffing and snoring can get tiresome after a while.

The symptoms of rhinitis happen because there is inflammation from swollen blood vessels and a build-up of fluid in the tissues that line the nose. The swelling blocks the nasal passages and stimulates mucous production leading to the constantly runny nose.
