viewpoint what do you think of it so far? rubbish! It’s been a particular hobby horse of ours for years, of course, but finally there are signs that this one at least could finally be destined for the knacker’s yard. Or more appropriately, perhaps, that it should be sent to the local recycling centre, because it’s been announced this month that fees to dispose of certain types of builders’ waste could be scrapped. Consultation documents published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) propose scrapping charges for getting rid of small quantities of rubbish such as shed or fence panels, tiles, plasterboard, and paving slabs. It seems that the Government has finally woken up to the fact that the big stick approach to recycling is not necessarily the holy grail for a better world, and that a more relaxed approach will actually save local councils much needed cash in the long run. Paradoxically, the change of mood seems to be the result of one of the consequences of the pandemic, which has seen an explosion in home and garden improvements these past two years. Good news on many levels but, unfortunately, even the smallest DIY project creates waste which needs to be disposed of and faced with unprecedented queues – and a bewildering scale of fees for various types of rubbish – some unscrupulous members of the public invariably choose to dump their waste down quiet country lanes and local beauty spots. In fact, one of the Professional Builder team almost came a cropper on a dark mid-winters evening when he just managed to stop just short of a huge pile of rubble which had been unceremoniously dumped right in the middle of a road near his home! Apart from the obvious risk to life “Charging the public for disposing of and limb, of course, there is the not inconsiderable time and resources home improvement building waste is invested by local authorities to remove nothing more than a charter for the this unsightly and potentially verminous waste from blighting our communities. fly tipper and must be binned now!” In fact, in 2021 local councils recorded a mind blowing – but almost certainly conservative – one million incidents of fly tipping, and those appalling numbers show no sign of abating despite the return to some semblance of normal post-Covid life. Not all of the blame can be laid at the door of anti-social home improvers, of course. Unfortunately, we are only too aware of those who operate on the fringes of our own industry and will cut all manner of corners to secure a contract for lucrative renovations and repairs. Doing away with a skip, or ignoring the legal requirement to secure an appropriate waste licence, or commercial vehicle permit, can make the difference between winning a job or not, but should immediately ring alarm bells amongst potential customers who must never be afraid to ask probing questions about where their waste will end up. Perhaps it’s too much to ask, but a bit of common sense at the recycling centres wouldn’t also go a miss. In our experience the whole process varies tremendously from one depot to another with some staff adopting a very different stance with certain items. Overzealous enforcers seem to view the casual visitor with deep suspicion as though, instead of being a responsible member of society, they are somehow trying to get one over the system. Woe betides anyone who attempts to put a non-designated item in the wrong container! And who considered it was a good idea to charge an annual fee of £40 for green waste wheelies? The only thing that has achieved is the proliferation of something we really thought had long been condemned to the dustbin... back yard bonfires and all the implications that has for a cleaner environment. Hopefully, this new document will see the light of day and bring in a generally much lighter touch to the whole process of rubbish disposal. It’s a rare opportunity to right a growing wrong and one that none of us can afford to quite literally let go to waste. If you have a view let it be known with the consultation running until 4th July. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON DEFRA VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH001

More clarity needed on regulation changes says FMB With changes to the Building Regulations coming into force in England, on 15th June, the FMB is urging the Government to provide clear guidance to help make sure small builders are informed of the changes. In the most recent State of Trade Survey from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), a startling 52 per cent of builders are not yet prepared or aware of the changes. The revised regulations aim to improve the energy efficiency of

RoSPA’s Safer Stairs campaign achieves breakthrough The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is delighted to confirm that the Government is now proceeding with a consultation on updating the Building Regulations to include British Standard 5395-1 on stair design. The changes would, according to RoSPA, significantly improve the safety of all new-build homes, with the updated stair design associated with a staggering 60 per cent reduction in the risk of falls. RoSPA has called falls on the stairs “a hidden killer” which claims the lives of over 700 people in England every year and hospitalises 43,000 more.

Turning the cables!
Builders are being urged to prioritise electrical safety after the trade was involved in the highest number of cable damage incidents during the past year.
UK Power Networks which distributes electricity to 8.4emillion homes and businesses across London, the south east and east of England, is issuing the warning after finding more than a fifth of all accidents with its networks involved builders. In 2021 builders were involved in 23 per cent of incidents where members of the public came into contact with electricity cables, more than any other trade. The company has stressed the importance of pre-planning, by requesting cable plans in advance and avoiding working too closely to live services. One area of concern is private builders carrying out work such as small house builds or extension, laying driveways and excavation work. Workers could be at risk when carrying out building, construction and excavation work using diggers, lifting equipment, ladders, pneumatic drills and hand tools. Cable plans can be obtained before starting any work via the UK Power Networks website www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk or www.linesearchbeforeyoudig.co.uk. Any emergency incident or damaged cable can be reported by dialing 105. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH004

‘WATER’ DISASTER
Plumbing professionals are called in more often than any other trade to fix a botched DIY job
Water Regs UK compared a range of typical jobs that are carried out in UK homes and recorded how many people have tried but failed to complete the jobs themselves. Over 2,000 people across the UK were asked which home maintenance jobs they or a family member or friend had attempted, only to end up calling out a professional to fix the problem. Almost a fifth (18 per cent) of those surveyed said that they had called in a plumbing professional to complete a job they had tried to do themselves. FOR MORE DETAILS VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH007

Government's energy strategy criticised for focusing on the use of solar panels. “Solar panels will raise costs,” argues NFB housing and planning policy head, Rico Wojtulewicz. “You have to get a qualified person to install them, they require grid reinforcement, smart systems or home energy storage, and a change of electrical supply system." He stressed moving from gas to electricity for powering heating and vehicles would entail upgrading the grid from single-phase to three-phase capacity. Potentially, this could mean that a development of 20 homes might cost an extra £100,000 to deliver. Property finance intermediary Hank Zarihs Associates said development finance lenders were worried that SME builders could be faced with unsustainable costs if asked to invest in infrastructure upgrades. “The Energy Security Strategy completely misses the mark in tackling energy consumption in our homes,” laments Brian Berry, Chief Executive at the FMB. “While the strategy does deliver 0 per cent VAT on energy efficiency improvements – a welcome move that the FMB has long been campaigning for – this only helps those with the money to pay in the first place. A broader, insulation led, retrofit strategy would have been an immediate solution to reduce energy consumption, boost the economy and, importantly, help save homeowners money on their bills during a cost-of-living crisis.” FOR MORE DETAILS VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH010

Tradespeople use social media to help combat tool theft, finds Direct Line
Nearly four in 10 tradespeople (37 per cent) are using social media to combat tool theft, according to new research from Direct Line business insurance. They are using these platforms to warn each other about suspicious sellers, as well as educate themselves on criminal and suspicious activity in their area. The same study revealed that only a small number of tradespeople are taking additional steps to help minimise the effects of tool theft, such as keeping their insurance up to date and engraving or marking their tools to make it harder to resell them and make it easier to recognise the owner if the items are recovered. PUMP ACTION
Government must incentivise hybrid heat pump systems, says Baxi
Baxi is calling on the government to incentivise hybrid systems which combine a specially adapted heat pump with a traditional gas boiler, potentially reducing gas usage by up to 70 per cent. The government is about to offer a grant of up to £5,000 to customers for switching to a pure heat pump solution as well as a VAT cut on the technology. Hybrids could, however, provide a way to reduce gas usage, reduce bills and decarbonise the nation’s heating. FOR MORE DETAILS VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH012

WHY SOFTWARE HAS NEVER BEEN MORE IMPORTANT “Hefty inflation, material and labour shortages, and project delays are placing a huge pressure on building firms. If they drop the ball even for a moment, there’s a chance they’ll lose serious money. Estimating software is vital,” says Joanna Mulgrew, HBXL Building Software’s Managing Director. EstimatorXpress tracks the latest prices and can work out not just today’s cost but the job start date cost as well - which is almost definitely going to be more. Material schedules are produced automatically so suppliers can be given advanced notice. The clever on-board dashboard provides loads of analysis including a visual overview of profit, cash flow and progress. Managing a building firm with the help of software is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but a necessity, according to Joanna. “Building firms that are still reliant on pen and paper and spreadsheets risk being left behind, or worse still, disappearing. The interest in construction software over the last 12 months has risen significantly, and with good reason,” she explains. “The more profitable businesses today are letting digital solutions do the heavy lifting - from the quoting and project management, through to health and safety and contract writing.” HBXL’s ‘Go Digital’ campaign is designed to take any fear factor out of software programmes, by making them accessible to smaller 1-5 person building firms. According to Joanna, IT skills are really not needed for using HBXL’s software. The suite is made up of five end-to-end construction software tools: As well as EstimatorXpress, there’s PlansXpress; Health & Safety Xpert; ContractsXpert and ProjectXpert. Each one has been re-engineered to be even more straightforward for the user. The whole process is ‘step by step’ with visual aids and hints and tips that appear in the window as you go. The project data in the estimate also populates the health and safety, contracts and project management software, saving the user even more time. As for the design side, their PlansXpress software helps builders draw architect quality buildings plans and models - without the need for qualifications. Less costly than architect services, the software’s impressive graphics are job-winners. SUPPORT AND FREE TRAINING All new users receive an onboarding session, help with their first estimate or CAD drawing, and have the option of eight free hours of live-streamed training to sharpen their new found skills if they feel they need it.
In the first instance builders are being invited to have a short online demonstration. The number of slots has been expanded to meet the demand. Call 0117 916 7898 to book your demonstration or go online to www.hbxl.co.uk/online-demo

SPECIAL REPORT HEALTH & SAFETY
#KneelSmartKneelSafe
KNEE TO KNOW ADVICE
According to statistics from the Health & Safety Executive, the building industry has one of the highest rates of workrelated knee injuries of any sector. ToughBuilt is on a mission to change that. Professional Builder discovers more.
eing in the trade can be tough on your knees. Whether you’re laying floors, installing services, roofing, tiling or carrying out subfloor repairs, time spent kneeling for long periods of time on hard, unforgiving surfaces could be doing more harm than you think. Much, much more… “Broadly speaking, knee injuries that can be sustained at work fall into two categories,” explains Matt Handley, ToughBuilt’s European Head of
B
Marketing. “Impact injuries – such as those caused by kneeling on a sharp item or striking the knee against a hard object – and longer-term ‘wear and tear’ injuries. “This latter group includes those caused by extended periods of kneeling without the proper protection. This subjects the knee and surrounding tissue to excessive and unhealthy levels of pressure with the damage building up over time. “These longer-term, cumulative conditions are perhaps the most
concerning as they have the potential to be a ticking timebomb. In a similar way to asbestosis, the harm isn’t immediately apparent and it’s only further down the line that the consequences come to light.”
Crippling consequences? Just one of the conditions Matt is referring to, which can often be caused by prolonged, non-protected kneeling, is knee bursitis. This entails a small fluid-filled sac called the bursa – which reduces friction and cushions pressure points between your bones and the tendons, muscles and skin – becoming inflamed. In chronic cases, the bursa may need to be removed by a surgical procedure known as bursectomy. Another knee condition, which can be work-induced, is osteoarthritis. Widely known as wear-and-tear arthritis, osteoarthritis involves the cartilage, which provides cushioning for the knee joint, wearing away. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the UK and can be caused by activity that places constant stress or pressure on the knee

joint. Again, this includes kneeling. Worryingly, 71 different studies, involving nearly one million workers, have shown that the building trades and construction workers have roughly three times the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis compared to those in more sedentary, arguably less punishing professions. Plus, this isn’t the only concerning statistic. According to Business in the Community, a network established by the Prince of Wales to champion responsible business, musculoskeletal (MSK) problems, such as back, shoulder and knee pain, are the leading cause of lost working days in the UK. It is estimated they cost the country’s economy an alarming 31 million days every year. Similarly, research published by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in late 2020 highlighted that of the 480,000 work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) recorded for 2019/2020, some 93,000 affected the lower limbs – including the knees. The same HSE statistics listed the construction industry as being an area where WRMSDs are particularly prevalent with higher-than-average occurrences.
#KneelSmartKneelSafe “When it comes to the risk of work-related knee injuries posed to those in the trade, the facts speak for themselves,” comments Matt. “Adequate knee protection on the jobsite shouldn’t be seen as a nice-to-have; it needs to be viewed as an absolute necessity. “It’s for that reason that we launched our #KneelSmartKneelSafe campaign. This initiative aims to engage, inform and educate people across a variety of professions on the importance of protecting their knees.” He continues: “As a company which
I

manufactures knee pads, ToughBuilt is exposed to some of the frightening consequences of work-related knee injuries on a regular basis. Given this knowledge, our efforts to raise awareness of the need for adequate knee protection isn’t motivated by commercial gain, but by a duty of care. We see it as our moral responsibility to share our insight and understanding for the greater good of the industries we serve.” To ensure greater knee safety at work, ToughBuilt’s #KneelSmartKneelSafe campaign is a coordinated programme of activity that includes working with the media to produce educational articles, lobbying key policy makers and collaborating with leading authorities such as the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF). The business is also offering advice to individuals and organisations to help them choose knee protection which is fit for purpose. As a rule of thumb, the company advocates looking for suitable levels of performance in three key areas – penetration resistance, force distribution and shock absorption. “Penetration resistance is measured in levels between zero and two with two being the higher,” explains Matt. “A knee
pad with a zero rating will not prevent impact injuries like those caused by accidently kneeling on a nail, stone or other jagged or sharp-edged surface. “Perhaps the simplest way of choosing knee protection is to always opt for knee pads that carry CE or UKCA markings. This applies to the majority of the ToughBuilt range. Alternatively, look for pads that are certified to relevant standards such as BS EN 14404.”
A commendable commitment ToughBuilt’s determination to raise awareness of work-related knee injuries and of the need to wear appropriate knee protection where necessary has recently received independent recognition. In April this year, the company received two commendations at the Safety & Health Excellence (SHE) Awards in conjunction with the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF). It was commended in the BSIF Product Innovation category for its development of the ToughBuilt GelFit™ Rocker Knee Pad. These pads use a patented SnapShell™ system to offer users unparalleled levels of versatility as well as the ability to tailor one pair of pads to provide protection across a variety of jobs. “The SnapShell at the front of these kneepads is interchangeable and can be swapped to suit different tasks and work environments,” says Matt. “Three types are available – non-marring, rocker for use on rough terrain and stablisers. The pads can also be used without any SnapShell.” The company was further commended in the BSIF Safety Solution category. This second commendation was for the business’ on-going #KneelSmartKneelSafe campaign. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TOUGHBUILT’S RANGE OF KNEE PADS VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH014

SPECIAL REPORT DRAGONS’ DEN
FACING THE DRAGONS! When PipeSnug founders Alex Lever and Chris Burdett entered BBC’s Dragons’ Den, they left with an offer from not one, but two Dragons. Here, they tell Professional Builder about the big day.
How did you feel when both Peter and Deborah said they would invest? Chris: I was quite surprised to be honest. It’s not a sector Peter has invested in much before, but it just seemed too good an opportunity for him to turn down!
Q What made you decide to apply to Dragons’ Den? Alex: We were looking for investment to help take the business to the next stage when out of the blue we received an email from a researcher for Dragons’ Den who asked whether we were interested in applying. Chris: We thought it was a wind-up initially, but the timing worked, so we thought, why not give it a go!
Q
Did you know beforehand precisely what figure you were willing to accept for a stake in PipeSnug? Alex: We had a figure that we felt comfortable with and discussed that with a couple of independent advisers to make sure we weren’t way off the mark. So yes, we had a strategy to work to when we were in there.
Q
What happened on the day? Did you just walk out of the lift, into the den and pitch? Alex: We were one of five entrepreneurs filming that day. There was a lot of nervous tension in the building. We were kept in the lift for what felt like an eternity, but when those doors open, you walk out and it’s straight into the action! Chris: The pitch itself is only two to three minutes, but there is a long period after that for the Dragons to ask questions. We

were actually in the Den for around two hours. Then you also have the interviews with the production team before and after. That sounds tough! How difficult was it to pitch? Alex: We’ve pitched PipeSnug quite a bit over the years to a wide variety of people, but nothing quite prepares you for pitching in the Den. I did actually freeze for a few seconds just after starting my section of the pitch but luckily the editors were kind on me and removed that from the final programme. Once the pitch was over and we got into the questioning, I relaxed and bizarrely actually quite enjoyed the experience!
Q
Are the Dragons as scary as they seem? Alex: No, we didn’t find them that scary. They can be direct and brutal, but you have to learn to take knocks in business and have the confidence and belief in yourself and your product or idea to respond accordingly.
Q
It ended very well for you but it seems like a ruthless process – what advice would you give other entrepreneurs who might want to apply? Alex: Have complete confidence in yourself and your business. Make sure you prepare thoroughly and anticipate all the questions you are likely to be asked. You will be found out very quickly, so don’t try and wing it.
Q
Q
So what’s next for PipeSnug?
Alex: Growth! In the short to medium term, we want to increase availability and sales of our current products and develop new versions of PipeSnug for different sizes and different applications. Longer term, we want to explore the export markets, as we have now secured patents in the USA, Europe, Australia and elsewhere. Chris: I think securing a deal in the Den with the Titans of the programme has given us a confidence boost and even more belief that we have a great product and great business that we need to grow much bigger. SPECIAL REPORT READERS’ LIVES
Singing plumber, Kevin Crane’s vocal talents have won him a record deal and he will soon be the subject of a new movie. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the tradesman about his sudden fame.
he quiet village of Quorn now has its very own recording star, and it’s all thanks to a chance encounter between a producer and a tradesman. Plumber and bathroom installer, Kevin Crane has been plying his trade since 2008 but has equally harboured a life-long love of music. “I was in a band in my youth, called Reprise and we played together for a good few years,” recalls the Leicestershire tradesman. “Eventually reality overtook my youthful ambitions and I left my album of original songs from that period unfinished.” After a hiatus of two decades, lockdown would provide the time and inspiration to take up his songwriter’s pen once again, but little did Kevin know where his musical talents would take him next. “I wrote a couple more original tracks just to entertain the village when the pandemic first hit,” Kevin explains. When they enjoyed an equally positive reception on Facebook, Kevin was inspired to finish the album he’d begun 25 years earlier and utilised his skills as a tradesman to put together a soundproofed recording studio in his cellar. “To be honest the reason I built it was because the empty house next door to us was sold and I couldn’t be singing and playing a keyboard with new neighbours to disturb. I’m far from being a sound engineer, and didn’t have a clue how to mix. I spent whatever time I could spare learning how to operate some of the equipment on YouTube and the result was my debut album, Why Can’t I Be You? Even then, I didn’t really have plans to do anything with it. My motivation was purely a personal satisfaction in finishing

what I’d started so many years before.” All that was destined to change in dramatic fashion. Some months later, when Kevin got the call to renovate three bathrooms in a Loughborough property, he had no inkling that it would be a step on the path to a record deal. “I’ve always had my radio on at work and will sing along when my apprentice isn’t around,” he recalls. “The client, Paul Conneally, had actually started up his own label, New
Reality Records during lockdown, and he said he really liked my voice. I told him about my home studio and the album and I think there was a real synergy between up because we’d both turned to music as way to cope with the strange times we were all going through. Once he heard my songs Paul said he loved the sound I’d achieved and wanted me to sign for his record label.” When a friend and journalism lecturer from Kevin’s village interviewed him, and then sent it to the BBC, interest in his story gathered momentum. “The media attention has been pretty crazy,” he admits. “I think the idea of an ordinary working man following a dream has caught the public imagination and featuring on the likes of the Drew Barrymore Show, as well as appearances
018_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 09:49 Page 19
with Holly and Phil on This Morning, have been pretty surreal.” The sudden notoriety is set to intensify, however, with a movie now planned that will tell Kevin’s fairy tale story on the silver screen. “I’ve now signed the official contract and – although I can’t tell you just yet who’s going to play me in the film – I can reveal that Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement have penned the script, it will be coproduced by Stacy Sherman and Billy Ray – who wrote the Hunger Games – and will be called The Music Inside. There’s been talk of the likes of Jude Law or Jason Statham starring and that’s when it will get very weird for me!” Why Can’t I Be You? has been available to download since September of last year across multiple streaming platforms, and a number of singles have also been released from the album. In addition to that, Kevin has added to his repertoire with three more original tracks. “‘80s music has always been my biggest influence, and it’s a sound that dominates the album,” Kevin reveals. “At the same time I’ve brought my own style and take on the period.”
Future plans “We’re now planning on getting out on the road with some live gigs and I would like to explore the idea of writing for other perfomers, as well as producing a second album. In truth, because it’s all streaming these days there’s not a lot of money to be made for the artist – you do it because you love it – and that’s why I’ll carry on regardless. If my songs are used in the movie there’s a chance that I could benefit financially from that but it’s not something I’m giving much thought to.” Instead, Kevin is determined to enjoy the moment, and hopefully be given the licence to spend more of his time indulging in his first and abiding love. “I worked very hard in my twenties to try and make it in music and it never happened, so it’s not something you expect when you’re a 50 year old tradesman,” concludes Kevin. “Most of all I’m determined to just see where it all goes without any preconceptions. It was Paul’s idea for the Why Can’t I Be You? album cover to feature me sitting at the back of my van and it encapsulates the story quite nicely. I’m a pretty ordinary guy who’s been able to fulfil at least part of a dream I had as a much younger man.” TO DOWNLOAD KEVIN CRANE’S ALBUM WHY CAN’T I BE YOU? VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH017

SPECIAL REPORT TOOL THEFT
ARMD SUPPORT As tool theft puts more builders out of business, Professional Builder speaks to Stephen Holland, co-founder of ARMD, the new platform designed to protect the trade from thieves.
Q
Tool theft isn’t going away, is it?
Stephen Holland (SH): Sadly not. There is one tool theft every 23 minutes, which equates to approximately 23,000 a year – and that shocking figure is only those that are reported. When tools are stolen the average daily loss of income is around £350, not including damage to vehicles and reputation. Approximately half of all tradespeople do not even have insurance to cover them if they suffer a tool loss.
We have heard some terrible stories from builders who can’t even claim against their insurance? SH: In February of this year, a 21-year-old carpenter in Bournemouth had £8,000 worth of his tools stolen, which he had been saving for since he was 16. He had to Crowdfund to replace them. We have also heard horror stories about tradespeople who have been unable to claim after something bad happens, because they were unaware of what level of proof of
Q
purchase they need to claim or even by how much their tools depreciate over time. Where did the idea for ARMD come from? SH: Our CEO, Devin Chawda’s, last company was a smart home security business and we kept getting asked by installers if they could use our technology in their vans because their tools kept getting stolen. From this the idea sprang and consequently the ARMD App and website were developed to address the many different pain points the trades experience when trying to protect themselves and their tools. Essentially, we are here to make tool insurance easy and accessible to all tradespeople, so if you suffer a loss, we can help you get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Q
Q
How does it work?
SH: It is specifically designed to give the trade four ways to protect your business; Record, Insure, Protect, Replace. Firstly, the free ARMD Tool Inventory lets you easily record and see your tools in one place. When you buy a tool, you record it here. The insurance is fit for purpose – you

do not have to take tools out of your van at night and you are covered 24/7, with tools in transit. We also give you access to security products for your van, protecting your tools with a range of powerful locks, alarms and even smart sensors that automatically call you when someone tries to break in. Then ARMD allows you to replace and insure. How much does it cost and how long does it take to claim? SH: It is free to download the App and the Tool Inventory is free too. You can get an instant no obligation quote on any tools you own as well. Insurers always talk about how easy it is to insure, but not always about how easy it is to claim. Our dedicated tool insurance is underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance and can be bought in the app, alongside power tools. If a claim should be made, and your tools are in the inventory, a Claim Report can be generated and submitted in a few simple clicks and submitted to the insurer from the app – there is no need to go
Q
through the tedious, cumbersome, and stressful process of talking to a claim handler. One of our latest claims was approved in under 72 hours. That meant no business was lost and tools could be replaced really quickly. The customer was really happy. What other plans do you have in the pipeline? SH: We are now developing our wireless IOT hardware which will protect your tools

while they are in your van. The ARMD smart van alarm uses motion sensors to provide immediate phone notifications to tradespeople when their van is attacked and includes a GPS tracking facility to track down vehicle location. SPECIAL REPORT TRAINING & UPSKILLING
Inside the
ACADEMY REWARDS Professional Builder is going ‘Inside the Dulux Academy’ to find out what the manufacturer is doing to support decorators through every step of their career emand for highly skilled professional painters and decorators is on the rise again following lockdown, yet the decorating industry itself is facing a long-term labour shortage and skills crisis. We’ve seen a lack of new and young workers moving into the trade, leading to a shrinking and ageing workforce. Recent research shows that the average age of a UK decorator is 50, while 66 per cent of decorators are set to retire within the next 10 years. Recognising this issue from an early stage, Dulux took matters into their own hands by launching Dulux Academy at its Decorative Paints UK Headquarters in Slough in 2016, approved by City & Guilds and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). With the objective of training up to 4,000 tradespeople a year, it became the UK’s first dedicated training centre for professional painters and decorators. Today, the facility offers over 50 courses – delivered by its team of expert Skills Development Consultants – designed to support every element of decorating, split into five core areas: Product, Application and Innovation;
Sustainability; Colour & Design; Health & Safety; and Business Skills. To help realise its ambition of having its training facilities within 100 miles of a decorator, Dulux Academy has also been expanding its reach across the UK. This includes bringing its courses to several partner colleges, and to new sites across

RACHEL BATES, BATES&MISONS, CHARD, SOMERSET Rachel Bates said Dulux Academy courses were invaluable to her when she decided to move into decorating after making a career change to better support her family. She says: “When I started my decorating Rachel Bates career, I went on numerous Dulux Academy training courses to learn as much as I could about painting and decorating. This includes their digital murals, wallpapering and kitchen spraying courses, which have been hugely helpful, and we receive great support and advice through the Dulux Academy Facebook page too.” Rachel says she is proud to be a female decorator and would encourage other women to join the trade. “It’s a brilliant job to be in and you’re able to turn out beautiful work that you can take real pride in. apprentices enrolled at a college or with a learning provider, the Apprentice Season Ticket provides users with access to an online learning hub and face-to-face courses at venues across the UK, online subject clinics and a network of peer-to-peer advice and support, among other benefits.
An industry for everyone With women making up just 20 per cent of UK appliers, Dulux Academy says it is strengthening its commitment to promoting gender diversity and equality across the industry with incentives that promote the success and achievements of tradeswomen, while also highlighting the benefits of choosing painting & decorating as a profession. Dulux Academy has sponsored and contributed to a whitepaper that identifies the inequalities and challenges faced by women in decorating and construction, while also offering solutions to how these industries can adapt to promote a safer and more welcoming environment for female workers. At the same time, it is continuing to offer both face-to-face training courses and online Free Academy Live sessions that were first introduced to support decorators during lockdown restrictions. These are now helping to meet the needs of female decorators looking for more flexible work options to fit around their family and other commitments. Over 40 per cent of trade professionals currently learning with Dulux Academy online are female, while women make up 20 per cent of Academy attendees on face-toface courses.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS WINNING WORK
ALL THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS An app with an established global presence has arrived in the UK and promises to bring clients and builders together quicker than ever before. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the team behind Spetz. e live in a society where consumers demand an instant response from service providers and the repair, maintenance and improvement sector needs to adapt to that reality. A relatively recent entrant to the UK is helping do just that, with an app that promises to quickly and easily match property owners with the right tradespeople. A global company with a local ethos, the Spetz app has been 10 years in development and seen an investment of over $5 million dollars. “We’re providing something new to the market,” enthuses the company’s Ofir Friedman, Vice President, Business Development and Marketing. “From the consumer perspective they can find the best service provider for them in their area, and the tradesperson can connect directly to customers and grow their business more effectively.”
W
Time saving service A fundamental component of the Spetz proposition for both side of that equation is speed. By harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence, the platform can connect a homeowner with a service provider within 30 seconds. Yossi Nevo, the founder and CEO, explains more: “If a customer has a leaking roof, for example, we can eradicate a lot of the frustration in the process of finding someone to repair it. Instead of wading through directories, making multiple calls, and waiting for callbacks, they can post a job in an average
of ten seconds – and they can add images or a description of what’s required. The result is a connection at a time of their choosing with the most suitable person for that job and location. As a consequence of that detailed matching with the right consumer, Spetz can also point to a high conversion rate, with initial contacts regularly turned into actual work. Not only that but a rating system on the app demonstrates the individuals who have been most valued

by their clients for previous services rendered, which in turn will win the builder in question more jobs in the future through the app. Essentially, the best people get the best jobs.
Online presence Builders who are registered will have their own profile, detailing their catchment area, availability, and trade. Where Spetz also departs from many existing lead generation sites is that there is no subscription payment for a trade business to have an ongoing presence on the app, or commission fees on jobs won. Instead, they’re charged a small fee – which can be as little as £6 – when the customer makes direct contact with them. That means the payment is levied at the point at which the builder is most likely to win the work, whilst a potentially high value project can be secured with a modest initial outlay. “This is crucial to the Spetz model,” declares Yossi, “because big opportunities can be opened up with relatively small amounts of money. Not only that but the rates can be further reduced through our loyalty programme, and there are also introductory offers for new service providers.” If a job is delayed and there’s a sudden gap in a work schedule, then the Spetz app could be on hand to fill it, whilst the builder can also declare him or herself as

unavailable if they’re particularly busy – or exclude certain locations that they don’t want to work in or travel to. Moreover, with over 400 service types on the Spetz app, the consumer can be confident that they’ll access a provider with the right skills for that project. The user-friendliness doesn’t end there because there is also full 24/7 online support, and each service provider is allocated an account manager, who is also

contactable by phone and trained to help. The technology is constantly evolving and there are future plans to expand the information that the service provider’s profile communicates, including a gallery where tradespeople can showcase a portfolio of previous work, and a live chat function. “Our two most important values are speed and quality,” concludes Yossi, “and that’s for both the consumer and the
service provider. It empowers a builder, plumber or electrician to access the kind of work they want to do, when and where they want to do it. It’s a flexible system that can be put to work for them and their business.” As lockdown ably demonstrated, the nation’s tradespeople are often undertaking vital jobs for the general public, and their services are frequently required urgently. That’s why speed is at the heart of Spetz, coupled with a commitment to finding the right person for the job. Spetz can now boast over 10,000 service providers, and 250,000 consumer app installs worldwide. It is already a successful business in Australia and Israel, and it enjoys an excellent rating on Trustpilot of 4.5 – 5. There’s now a growing UK-wide presence – and plans to launch to the United States. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE SPETZ APP VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH023

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS RECRUITMENT
JUST THE JOB
Gemma and Clive Wheeler are the father and daughter team behind the Trade Jobs App
f a homeowner is looking for a builder there are now any number of web-based find a tradesperson and lead generation services that they can consult. The contractor in need of reliable subbies, however, is not so blessed, nor indeed are the tradepeople who suddenly find themselves with a short-term gap in their work schedule. A new digital network is seeking to redress that balance and it’s been developed by an individual with an acute understanding of the challenges of recruitment in construction. The Trade Jobs App brings contractors, sub-contractors and tradespeople together, with an ambition to improve the management of on-site labour in the process. Clive Wheeler’s extensive experience

There’s now an app to fill your trade jobs gap. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones hears from the developers of a new digital recruitment platform in the sector amounts to over 40 years, and his time at the coalface had included founding a company that provided carpentry sub-contractors to some of the industry largest housebuilders. “Whilst we had a successful business it was always a struggle to maintain a steady workforce,” explains the 65-year-old. “Site agents would often tell us they needed another couple of guys for the next day and, whilst you do your best, and phone around to the people on your books, that’s not exactly ideal – or achievable. By the same token there were periods when we had too many tradespeople looking for work, and you’re frantically trying to find them suitable roles.” It was from these dilemmas that the Trade Jobs App would emerge as a
solution. “I actually had the idea around ten years ago,” Clive reveals, “but didn’t really know how to make it a reality, until a chance meeting with the organisation who would go on to develop the app for us.” Like so many of the companies in the building industry that this new network serves Trade Jobs is itself a family affair, with Clive’s daughter, Gemma Wheeler, coming on board in a Director Operations role. “Apps are very technical,” admits Clive, “and it’s taken about a year to build before the launch in March 2022. That’s where Gemma’s IT skills have been invaluable.” So, just how does it work? A trade user registers with the site, providing contact details, availability and CSCS qualifications. Once that’s complete, they’re ready to go,
030_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 09:53 Page 31
as Gemma explains: “If, for instance, you’re a carpenter and you want to view jobs in your area, it’s a simple of matter entering your individual trade skill, postcode and how far you’re willing to travel. That will then generate a list of jobs – it really is that straightforward.”
Online network Currently free to use, serving both sides of the recruitment equation is the guiding principle of this online platform, as Gemma reveals: “Essentially, a contractor who’s short of work can post an advert, whilst also search for labour with immediately availability, and contact them directly. Every tradesman will be able to tell you about the calls they’ve had on a Friday afternoon where they’re told that the job they thought they were going to next week has suddenly been postponed. If they’re registered with our app, they can then potentially plug that gap very easily, as well as receiving notifications when new and relevant jobs are posted.” Clive, Gemma and the team will be
continually analysing user interaction in order to introduce additional functionality. In the future, user profiles could include a CV, for example, or testimonials and references from previous employers, as well as information on more specialist skills. “Our plan is to respond to our users and react to what they want,” Clive continues. “As we all know even some of
the smaller contractors can have several jobs on the go at any one time and the app can help manage workloads across them all, ensuring you have labour when and where you need it. The technology can be used to fill unexpected staff shortages, or for the recruitment of longer-term workers. We now have 36 different trades listed on the site and that’s growing all the time.” “It’s a network that can be quickly and easily accessed anywhere from your phone,” concludes Clive, “with the capacity to provide several options, and bring tradespeople and contractors together. Instead of a construction company laboriously contacting multiple individuals or agencies themselves our facility saves time because everything is brought together in one place.” THE APP IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY AND APP STORE. GO WEST! West Fraser is championing environmentally friendly construction. Steve Roebuck talks to Professional Builder’s Lee Jones about the company’s products and production processes. hilst every manufacturer is putting its sustainability credentials front and centre, if your products are derived from one of the most environmentally favourable construction materials available then you’re in a pretty good place to begin with. That’s certainly the case with the West Fraser range of wood-based panels but that’s not to say that the manufacturer is not taking further steps to tread with an even lighter and more inconspicuous carbon footprint. “Sustainability has been a focus of ours long before it was as high as it now is on the policy agenda,” explains West Fraser’s European Director of Environment, Health & Safety, Steve Roebuck. “We have developed independently verified Environment Product Declarations EPDs for our entire European range, for example. These clearly demonstrate that our products are net carbon negative, with
W
I
34 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
a net negative global warming potential. In practice that means that – from cradle to customer, or from the sustainable managed forest right to the joiner’s workshop or on-site carpenter – the products lock in more carbon than is emitted in their manufacture.” West Fraser has equally concentrated its attention on fossil fuel consumption in its production processes. Up to 50 per cent of timber is water and that requires heat to drive it out. As a result, the wood panel industry is classified as an energy intensive user. In order to mitigate that demand, West Fraser derives the vast majority of the heat required in manufacture from renewable sources,
with any leftover material from the making of the product also then used to generate heat. Indeed, the company is recognised as one of the largest generators of renewable heat in the UK. All three of the UK manufacturing sites – South Molton in Devon, Inverness, and Cowie – take part in the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive initiative. In order to participate in that scheme the energy that’s used to generate heat must be from renewable sources. Moreover, West Fraser has also entered into contracts with its energy suppliers that will guarantee that all of its electricity is sourced from renewables, a state of affairs that is again independently audited
034_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 09:54 Page 35
through the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme. “We recognise that most of the measures that we’ve implemented to improve environmental performance have a financial cost for us,” admits Steve. “Essentially, it’s about trying to do more with less – less energy and less raw materials – but with the same outcomes. What’s more important is the principle behind what we’re doing.” So, what then of the products themselves? How do the individual panel solutions qualify as green building materials? West Fraser’s particleboard is made from 80 per cent post-consumer wood waste, and whilst MDF is virgin material, it is actually the residue of the sawmilling industry, all of which contributes to the circular economy. In addition, all of West Fraser’s wood is FSC and/or PEFC certified, which is fully demonstratable to a builder’s own clients. The MDF and OSB wood panel solutions supplied are manufactured on these shores, from UK-grown virgin material, under the auspices of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard, an organisation which independently verifies sustainable woodland management.
Homegrown The homegrown status of SterlingOSB Zero stacks up very favourably against its ply alternatives, all of which have to be imported – often from as far afield as South America or the Far East – with an obvious environmental impact in terms of energy miles. In fact, West Fraser’s OSB is a truly local product with all of the wood used for its manufacture in Inverness coming from approximately a 70mile radius of the plant. Environmental considerations are not just about global emissions, of course, but are also concerned with local air quality and that’s why West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero is now the only OSB panel available to be free of added formaldehyde. Trials are also on-going with MDF and particleboard to reduce the use of formaldehyde in these panels as well. Moreover, wood is the material that just keeps giving because any on site waste, or product at the end of its life, can be recovered and recycled, or utilised as biofuel to produce heat.
“Using OSB on building projects as an alternative to brick and block is effectively locking in carbon that has been taken out of the atmosphere by growing trees,” continues Steve. “The only large-scale tool we have for taking carbon out of the atmosphere, and reversing the damage that has been done by emissions historically, is through planting trees, and the wood panel industry is at the vanguard of that initiative.” With ready access to the raw material it’s not surprising that virtually all housing schemes in Scotland have been timber frame for some time, but the rest of the UK is waking up to its benefits in terms of sustainability and speed of build, and West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero OSB3 is the perfect solution in structural and loadbearing applications. The beauty of timber frame is its thermal capacity and the insulating properties that can be achieved in the finished build. West Fraser has made a global commitment in 2022 to sign up to a Science Based Targets Initiative (“SBTi”) to achieve near-term greenhouse gas (“GHG”) reductions across all its
operations. Furthermore, the world’s largest producer of lumber and oriented strand board has made a further pledge to be net carbon neutral by 2030, with a 45-50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by that time, thereby aligning its own ambitions with the maximum 1 ½ºC temperature rise agreed by governments around the world. West Fraser is putting its money where its mouth is with an investment of $50 million each and every year to 2030 to achieve those aims. If a brand becomes the generic term for a product then it is as clear an indication as can be had that it’s an industry stalwart and that’s certainly the case for SterlingOSB Zero. For many years now builders have been asking for ‘Sterling Board” at the merchant counter when they’re specifying OSB, so synonymous is the West Fraser product with Oriented Strand Board. Today, the manufacturer is also committed to achieving that same association with sustainability. “It’s a journey, and there will always be more to do,” concludes Steve. “We’re publicly committed to reducing greenhouse gases, but when one ambition is achieved there will be another, because we only have one planet. A renewable raw material is the basis of a product that is manufactured using renewable energy, producing buildings which are less energy intensive, and which can then be recycled at the end of its life – it really is the essence of sustainability.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON WEST FRASER’S RANGE OF WOOD PANEL PRODUCTS VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH031

DECISION OF THE BOARD Paul Midgley, Marketing Manager – Trade, at Knauf UK & Ireland highlights the importance of product selection.
ontractors working on domestic projects often have to fill multiple roles, with choosing and buying the products regularly falling on their shoulders. Homeowners can be more focused on what the final room will look like, so the products behind the build don’t tend to factor into their consideration. Therefore, understanding the different types of products available, becomes increasingly important for contractors. It’s often said that the construction industry can show some reluctance to trying new things. SME contractors and installers often prefer to fall back on experience for product selection and building methods. When a contractors’ job book is full, it’s completely understandable to optimise jobs as much as possible, either by relying on products they know, or bulk buying where possible, across jobs.
C
High Performance Plasterboard is a prime example of where contractors might fall back onto what they know rather than selecting the right board for the job. Some contractors might not even know of the wide range of High Performance Plasterboards that are better suited to specific rooms. Alongside their respective performance benefits, the added payoff is these boards are installed using the same methods as standard
plasterboard, meaning no extra installation costs for a lot of added value. Understanding which boards are best suited to the project starts with identifying what the customer wants from the room. Each High Performance Board provides specific advantages when installed. With a wide range of properties, including sound, moisture, and fire resistance, it starts with figuring out the purpose of the room or what problems that room must account for. Take, for example, a renovation on a
family bathroom. It’s a room that could be prone to moisture-related problems further down the line, resulting in a call to come back and fix the issue, if the right products aren’t installed. We would recommend contractors use Knauf Moisture Panel, a high-performance moisture resistant board. Designed for use in high humidity rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, it’s the perfect choice to ensure longevity. Using a standard wallboard without any moisture resistant properties would require extra components to prevent moisture damage long term. Moisture Panel contains additives to prevent moisture ingress caused by high humidity. This reduces damp related issues and the associated snagging costs, helping the contractor to achieve a better build.
Sound solution If the customer’s goal is to minimise noise, there are options which contractors can rely on. Sound proofing is an important requirement in modern living, so choosing a board with the right acoustic properties is key. Knauf Sound Panel offers improved levels of sound performance making it ideal for residential applications where a minimum of 10kg/m2 is required to reduce noise transfer between neighbouring rooms. Putting this into context, as more companies adopt hybrid working, a customer might want a quieter room for their office space or to reduce ambient

noise within the house. In this instance, Sound Panel is the ideal solution to provide enhanced sound insulation between rooms. Homeowners chasing peace and quiet will be thanking their contractor when they’re able to work in a quiet room without disturbance! While there are specific boards designed with singular property benefits, such as Knauf Fire Panel or Sound Panel, there are also performance boards which provide multiple property enhancements. Not every room has a singular focus so there will be needs for boards which provide sound insulation while being tougher or more resistant to fire.
Soundshield Plus which combines impact and fire resistance with enhanced sound performance, is a perfect example. At the top of the range is Performance Plus offering greater levels of impact, fire, and sound performance alongside additional moisture resistance. These boards are ideal for high traffic areas such as hallways or corridors which need to account for constant wear and tear. Over time, these high-performance boards reduce maintenance requirements versus standard boards.
Added value As important as it is to choose the right
board for the job, it’s also about the added value contractors can offer customers. Being able to go above and beyond by introducing more appropriate solutions demonstrates knowledge and experience. Knauf Performance Boards make for the ideal upsell to meet and exceed customer needs. When contractors start exploring the range of boards available to them, they’ll soon find the right solutions for the rooms they’re building. Knowing which boards to use and understanding their properties might be a daunting prospect at first. Knauf make it streamlined by detailing each performance board, with key information and resources, on our website. This helps contractors build with clarity, following the motto Knauf live by – Build for the world we live in. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE FULL KNAUF RANGE VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH032

STICKING WITH A WINNER When it comes to sealants and adhesives it pays to go premium, according to Bostik
on packaging can be a pain, so we’ve compiled a guide to cut through the jargon and help you quickly pick the best product for your job.
The all-rounder
ore and more tradespeople are embracing premium adhesives and sealants, valuing a higher quality product that can offer increased reliability. The latter is a growing priority; there is still a backlog of jobs delayed due to the pandemic, so having to revisit a job can eat into your valuable time. The number of premium adhesives and sealants on the market presents a great range of choice yet narrowing down the best solution can be difficult. While quality and a strong performance are key considerations, premium adhesives and sealants should come with an added value. Sifting through the various terms

Hybrid adhesive and sealant products, such as Evo-Stik The Dog’s B*ll*cks, can be extremely versatile and useful for lots of bonding and sealing jobs, which makes them the ideal product to keep in the back of your van for sudden emergencies. Technological advancements have really pushed forward the development of more products like these that use silane
modified polymer (also known as SM Polymer, SMP or MS) technology. They provide strong characteristics such as resistance to extreme temperatures and movement, superior bond strength in both wet and dry weather, and fast setting

times. This ensures you can finish the job on schedule, whatever the conditions, and sometimes in a shorter time frame.
Waterproof vs weatherproof Conditions are one of the most frustrating parts of the job. The time of year, the environment and the weather can all adversely impact your work on a project, either delaying work or ruining work already completed. High performance products that work in all sorts of conditions can make things easier. There are two descriptions that tend to trip people up. Isn’t waterproof and weatherproof the same? Well, no. A waterproof adhesive or sealant will not be affected by water, and when used correctly it shouldn’t let any water past it once cured. A weatherproof (sometimes described as an ‘all weather’) product, such as EvoStik Gripfill Max, can be waterproof, but it will also provide protection from other elements, including extreme temperatures. When you’re selecting a product, you should consider where it will be used. Remember that indoor areas can still be affected by high temperatures and, if it’s a sealant, the product may be exposed to UV rays, especially if the building has large glass windows or doors. You should also check whether your chosen product can be applied in wet or damp conditions, as this varies, with some products only waterproof once they have cured. SM Polymer sealants such as Sticks Like Sh*t Waterproof Sealant can be used on almost any building material or substrate and have excellent flexibility. As they’re solvent-free, SM Polymer products are also ideal for use in occupied buildings.
Solvent-based grabs Often considered a more traditional option, solvent-based grab adhesives are renowned for their superior final bond strength. Once applied, these adhesives rely on the evaporation of solvent in order to set and fully cure. After the solvent evaporates, the adhesive will become stronger until there is no solvent left in the solution and the adhesive reaches its maximum effectiveness. Some solvent-based grab adhesives, such as Gripfill, offer gap-filling properties that remove unevenness between two substrates, making them ideal for the application of skirting and coving. It’s important to check that surfaces will not be adversely affected by solvents before applying this type of adhesive.
Water-based grabs Water-based adhesives, such as Gripfill Solvent Free, offer all of the benefits of a regular, solvent-based adhesive without the odour. As they’re water-based, these adhesives have low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), making them a more environmentally friendly option. With no corrosive qualities, waterbased grab adhesives can be used on almost any building material without the risk of a chemical reaction. Their properties make them suitable for both porous and non-porous materials. However, they’re generally slower to set than their SM Polymer and solvent-based
counterparts and are often only suitable for use indoors.
Smarty paints Lots of people are unsure what ‘paintable’ really means in practice and can end up making a mess of a job. Adhesives and sealants usually need to fully cure before you can paint over them. This involves the evaporation of water, which means the products shrinks, so if you paint them too soon your paint will crack. To achieve a paintable sealant joint, it’s important to select the correct product in the first place. For example, paint won’t adhere to a silicone sealant, but it will adhere to an SM Polymer sealant such as Sticks Like Sh*t Waterproof Sealant. However, although these products ‘skin over’ rapidly within 15-30 minutes, they often need to be left for 24 hours before they’re paintable. Always check individual product details as timings can vary, even on very similar looking products, while some products are only compatible with certain types of paints. Premium adhesives and sealants can provide you with a range of advantages, so you should prioritise what’s most relevant for the job and your needs to ensure you find the ideal solution. THE FINISHING TOUCH Toupret Technical Manager, Adrian Smith gives his top preparation tips for achieving a great quality finish on interior renovations.
ith the current trend to expand and renovate homes rather than selling up and moving on, now more than ever, customers are asking how that garage space could be turned into a home-office, whether the loft could provide that desperately needed extra bedroom, or how a few extra square metres could give the kids a playroom. And with many clients spending more time at home using their improved spaces, they want a quality finished result. First, taping and jointing. Creating perfectly smooth surfaces on new plasterboard walls needn’t be a hassle and can be expertly achieved with jointing and skimming fillers, providing a super fine finish, ready for painting. After applying your filler along the edges between your plasterboards, you can bed your paper jointing tape: measure and cut out the length you need before hanging the tape and gently pressing it into the filler with either a blade or trowel to eliminate any trapped air. Adrian says: “You want to avoid dragging the tape, so never smooth it from top to bottom. Instead, always work from the middle out.” As soon as you’ve finished, apply a thin coat of filler over the top and feather out beyond the first coat.
W
I
44 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
If the job is substantial, you could cut down on time and effort with an automatic taper, designed to apply your tape and filler simultaneously. If you use an adhesive scrim tape, instead of paper, there’s no need to apply an initial layer of filler onto the joints. Simply measure, cut and apply your scrim before overcoating with filler. Adrian advises: “Watch out for corners! Scrim tape doesn’t fold easily, so it’s not suitable for edging jobs.” Once dry, and if needed, you can apply a second coat. And Adrian recommends extending the filler out to skim over the whole wall. Toupret’s Joint, Skim & Fill range is specifically designed for this kind of work. Available in both powder and ready mixed forms, these
products are smooth and easy to apply, will not shrink, and their special formulae make them easy to sand. You can paint over them with no need to spot prime. This is because, unlike plaster, fillers have breathable properties which help prevent moisture from building up.
Architraves and skirting A second preparation task that makes a huge difference to the overall finish quality is filling architraves and skirting. These areas are often tricky with narrow gaps and can be subject to movement between the wood and walls, but the superior finish always makes it worth the effort. Technical Manager, Adrian Smith continues: “Movement can generate reappearing cracks, particularly in older
044_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 09:57 Page 45
properties where changes in temperature are more common. That’s why I recommend a flexible filler as a solution for these difficult gaps.” Toupret’s Fill-Flex is a highly flexible filler that moves with the substrates, making it a better choice than a traditional caulk.
Application To get the precision you need for these areas, it’s a good idea to use a filler in a cartridge. Adrian says: “I always cut the nozzle at an angle as it gives me an easier flow of filler and makes it much more comfortable to apply.” He also recommends cutting the nozzle to the same size as the gap you’re filling, to avoid any spillage. Rake out the gap first, to remove any dust and debris, before gently squeezing the applicator to apply the filler. Once filled, use a damp cloth to wipe off the excess… or even a wet finger! Finally, it’s always a good idea to check the surface for little nicks, scratches or holes which often appear on the job, with the biggest culprit being where you rest your ladder! A fine surface filler is ideal for very small touchups and smoothing. If you’re confronted with larger holes or scratches Adrian advises: “Deeper holes are best tackled with a powder filler, such as our Interior Filler, because they hold their structure more effectively as they dry. If you’re pressed for time, our Quick Fill dries in just 30 minutes, or our Quick Dry Filler powder is also a great solution.” Be liberal with your application on larger holes. You want to avoid any air being trapped behind the filler once inside the hole or crack. To help him achieve this, Adrian says: “I always smooth from the middle outwards. It helps ensure there are no air pockets and stops the filler from dragging” The final step to getting your walls ready for decorating is to sand the filler back once dry. But be sure to use the right grade sandpaper. Adrian says “240-grade sandpaper is my go-to on our Fine Surface Filler, but you could go as low as 180. Anything lower, and you’ll be scratching off the filler completely.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE TOUPRET RANGE VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH038

Marshalls explains how to create a low maintenance driveway
hether you are creating a customer’s forever home or renovating their investment property, kerb appeal is still an important factor when it comes to the exterior. Creating a driveway that is not only practical in terms of access and space but that also complements the period and style of the house can seem a daunting task. The key to creating longlasting kerb appeal is building a lowmaintenance driveway; choose the right drainage, materials and overall style and it will remain impressive long after you’ve left the site. In this article we take a look at the key considerations when it comes to driveway design, and include some tips to help you make the right recommendations to your customers.
W
Sub-base and drainage Your customer won’t consider the driveway sub-base and approach to water management to be the most exciting parts of the plan, but make sure they
I
48 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
understand that getting them right will save time and money in the long-term. The majority of the cost of groundwork is hidden beneath the surface; the structural
layers that provide the structure of the installed system. Cost analysis on pavements, for example, demonstrates that the surfacing element makes up just 20 per cent of the total cost of the project. If you’re inexperienced, seek professional advice and consider using a specialist contractor to do the job. If it requires some excavation, make sure no existing tree roots or services (water pipes, TV cables etc) are going to be damaged during the process. Drainage design is another important factor in the initial plans; the aim is for the drive to deal with water run-off efficiently and within the legal guidelines. If you get it wrong, you could end up with a sunken surface, pooling water and even put the home at risk of flooding. The surface area of the driveway will dictate the size and design of the drainage needed. If it has a slope or incline towards the property you’ll need to make sure the drainage system is robust enough to take away the surface water and not allow it to undermine the house footings or structure
048_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 09:58 Page 49
of the house. Driveway legislation varies across the UK and in some cases the homeowner may need to seek planning permission, so make sure you understand what the local rules are to offer advice and guidance. Permeable paving is a popular option and can often remove the need for planning permission, those sold by reputable brands allow the water to drain straight back into the ground through the paving and sub base, saving the overloaded drainage systems in a sustainable way. Alternatively, recent innovations include stylish drainage systems, which can discreetly manage water, comply with legislation and give no compromise on style.
Driveway design The driveway design should reflect the space needed for the size of the property, so make sure you talk to your customer about how many vehicles they might want to park, and the size of these. There’s no set minimum width for a drive, but take into account the amount of vehicles that could use the space, and do the calculations to make sure car doors can open easily. Ensure the design gives easy access from the highway, with little or no obstructions that might get knocked or damaged, and make sure it is wide enough to allow reversing from the road, if needed. Driveway planting is a great way to add privacy to the front of the house and create biodiversity. The majority of people
want their drive and front garden to be low maintenance; evergreen and perennial plants and shrubs require the least work, but avoid options that send the roots into the ground, as that could undermine the sub base. If it’s a large space, a lawn might be an option, to bring colour to the space. Artificial grass is becoming increasingly common for front gardens, creating a lawn which looks good all year but requires very little work to keep it that way. Look for British made options that have a low carbon footprint, and aim for a product which comes with a good guarantee against UV damage and filament loss.
“Encourage your customer to consider details of what they want from their driveway – it’s the first thing people see when they arrive and it’s so much more than a practical space to park cars. If their focus is a low maintenance space then research all the options.”
Paving materials There are an abundance of options when it comes to the surface of a driveway and the colour and finish should be determined by the period and style of the property. When it comes to choosing a low maintenance option, porcelain is a great choice for all garden projects, including driveways. Due to the manufacturing process, it absorbs very little water, meaning it has a good resistance to stains, frost and, to an extent, prevents moss and algae growth. Whilst porcelain requires less cleaning and weeding it is also a durable paving choice, giving peace of mind that the outdoor space will stay looking good for a long time. Porcelain paving comes in a range of colours and finishes and is particularly suited to modern and new homes. Other low maintenance options include concrete, which is engineered to be longlasting and durable and can be found in a range of finishes including traditional cobbles and driveway setts. Mentioned earlier, permeable paving is a great sustainable option which helps combat issues of drainage and flooding and therefore reduces the risk of related issues further down the line.
In summary Encourage your customer to consider the details of what they want from their driveway – it’s the first thing people see when they arrive and it’s so much more than a practical space to park cars. If their focus is a low maintenance space then research all the materials and design options open to you, let them take the time to make their choices and seek expert advice where needed. Chris Ingram, founder of Continal Underfloor Heating, offers some top tips on how builders can use underfloor heating in any home extension.
TURN ON THE HEAT
he current ‘race for space’ in our homes is fuelling the private RMI market as people look for ingenious ways to add much-needed space to their homes. Whether homeowners need permanent office space for their new hybrid working lives, or want extra living rooms or bedrooms as their families grow, they are increasingly turning to skilled and experienced builders to help them find the most creative ways to improve their properties and increase the footprint. Many people think extending a heating
T
system will be a challenging process, but it doesn’t have to be, and modern underfloor heating (UFH) systems are making it easier than ever before. UFH is one of the most efficient heating system types on the market, which is more important than ever given the extremely high costs of gas and electricity. UFH also provides comfortable heat through the extension without heat emitters taking up valuable wall space. The importance of this benefit cannot be overestimated, considering the extension is being built specifically to maximise every inch of
space in your customer’s home! You may have been asked to add UFH to a ground floor extension at the rear of a property, or you might be going up into the loft and need to combine UFH with an existing radiator system – either way, with proper planning and the right technical support, fitting UFH as part of your renovation project can be quick and easy.
Do your research UFH is not a one-size-fits-all solution, so you can’t buy the same product for every project you work on. Overfloor systems will be better suited for projects where there is an existing subfloor that needs to be covered with UFH, such as on a first-floor extension, whereas solid floor systems are usually installed on ground floors when a new screed floor is being laid. The single most important thing you can do before you begin an extension project is to make sure you understand the building you’re working on. Is there insulation in the walls and floors already? Does the existing heating system run on a boiler or heat pump? Does the homeowner plan to switch to a lowtemperature heating system in future? The answers to all these questions will affect the building’s heat losses and will
I

extensions & home improvements
help determine which type of UFH system is best for you to use, and which pipe spacings will give your customers the most efficient results.
How do you lay your pipe? Another important consideration is the type of living space being created, and how much of the floor area is available for use as a heat emitter. A ground-floor kitchen extension that has a large island in the middle of the room may need a different UFH pipe layout than a groundfloor conservatory, or a first-floor extension that adds a new bathroom. The simplest layout for pipes in a modern, well-insulated home is a straight, back-and-forth pattern from one side of the floor area to the other. Some tradespeople prefer a snail pattern, and these work well in certain buildings, but a straight pattern is almost always easier to install, and will provide solid heat transfers and great efficiencies. If you are laying UFH by external windows or next to large expanses of glass you may wish to close up the pipe spacings to provide a higher heat output – much of this depends on the type of glass and what the expected heat losses are. When building a bathroom or en-suite you may need to lay the pipes closer together to achieve the desired heat
I
52 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
outputs, because you won’t be laying any pipe beneath baths or showers in the room, reducing the available floor area. But remember that if you’re using closer pipe spacings across a large floor area you’ll be laying more pipe, so you might need to consider fitting a bigger manifold. If you’re unsure, contact your UFH manufacturer, who should have technical advisers who can help you create the best design – or even do it for you.
Check floor and ceiling heights One of the biggest things that will determine the type of UFH system you choose concerns the floor and ceiling heights. If you’re extending a property then you may find a mismatch between the floor height of the existing building and the new extension. Alternatively, if you’re building a loft extension, you need to check the roof height (particularly around the stairs) and consider whether an ultra-slim system such as Continal’s OneBoard® structural panel will give you those precious extra inches of headroom that could make all the difference to the finished product. Our OneBoard composite chipboard panel can be installed directly onto timber joists without the need for a sub-base, replacing the normal chipboard or plywood layer and helping to reduce floor
build-up heights. Even taking into account the required coverboard, by using OneBoard your floor depth will increase by just 6mm. Pipe channels are prerouted into the panel at 150mm centres so that pipes can be laid quickly and easily. If you’re in any doubt over which system to choose, or you would like help designing the most efficient pipe layout for your project, it’s always best to seek advice from a trusted manufacturer such as Continal Underfloor Heating. GO WITH THE PLAN Marcus Jefford, managing director of Build Aviator, explains how using intelligent estimating support and services can help builders to make lighter work of extensions.
ccording to Barbour ABI, residential planning applications submitted in March this year equated to around £4.6bn – this takes the value of work for the first quarter of 2022 to the highest value before the pandemic. While a huge positive for our industry, helping many builders establish a strong diary of jobs for months – even years ahead – the demand for their time is greater too. This means it’s more important than ever to improve productivity while also maintaining profit, yet with extensions there are unique challenges that can sometimes impact time and return. By working with estimating providers with real on-site experience of both extensions and new build projects, there are ways these challenges can be overcome.
A
Starting with a plan Often homeowners contact a builder when they’ve got an idea of what they want to do, rather than when they have
physical plans in place. Previously, a builder might then direct them to an architect they know or advise them to get back in touch when drawings are done, but this can bring issues. As well as breaking the link between the builder and the customer, meaning they might then go to another builder for the work – or go with the architect’s preferred supplier – it can also mean plans are drawn up without a realistic budget in mind. Closing this loop, leading estimating services are now offering plan drawing services as part of an end-to-end package for builders and their customers. This means plans for an extension can be drawn up with the builder involved and critically, costed using genuine pricing and the builder’s real rates from the outset. Not only does this cut down on back and forth between architect and builder – and potentially local authority planning – as a project progresses, it is better for the customer too who will get a more accurate estimate for their extension upfront.
A clearer scope This early engagement with the customer also helps the builder get a clearer brief on their role and scope within the project. When working on an extension, it’s just as easy to have too much information from the customer as not enough and to make assumptions and then under price or overprice a job. Is the customer expecting a completed shell or a turnkey finish? Investing time here will stop builders spending hours estimating for work that’s not needed. Conversely, without the full picture, oversights can start to creep in: did you ask about existing drains or manholes? Or if only delivering part of the extension, who’s accounting for scaffolding? Asking these questions upfront will help produce a clearer, more accurate estimate but also means, if the builder wins the work, both they and the client know what’s in and what’s out of scope. That said, with many builders already short on time and estimates often done out of hours, things often get missed.

By working with a dedicated, experienced estimator, they’ll take plans and work through each element to create an estimate that’s based on specifics. They will look for the details such as the right thickness of plaster and how many boxes of fixings are needed. They will also base costs on current materials pricing and produce a full, professional report, with a full materials list, schedule of work and a quote using defined labour rates and profit margins. This helps remove the pressure for builders, with someone else providing a clear head and a fresh pair of eyes when demand for extensions is eating up their time.
Expecting the unexpected Another benefit of producing a thorough, accurate quote versus a simple text message or email is that when the unexpected happens – as often does with extensions – the builder is in a better position to have an open conversation with the customer. Changes and ‘can you
justs’ are part of a job, but if they aren’t part of the original estimate, they can be overlooked or mean a customer is landed with an unexpected invoice. By using intelligent estimating software at the start of an extension project, however, the builder and customer will have a clearer picture of what the estimate is based on. Better still, leading estimatorled services allow for changes to a job to be made quickly to show the builder and
client the cost difference of having to go down another six inches on the foundations or swapping material spec. This makes justifying a price change much easier and helps a client make an informed choice about whether they want to go over budget. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BUILD AVIATOR VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH045

A GLASS ACT Eclisse provides a guide to installing an 8mm or 10mm frameless glass door in a Classic pocket door frame
ack in the April edition of Professional Builder we showed you how to install a timber door in an Eclisse Classic Pocket Door System. This followed on from an article in the January edition that took you through assembling and installing the pocket door frame itself. Here we are going to take you through installing an 8mm or 10mm frameless glass door in a Classic pocket door frame. The beauty of a glass pocket door is that it is both a functional and elegant addition to any project. The frameless glass doors that come with Eclisse pocket door systems come in a wide variety of designs and styles to suit all interiors and can be transparent, satin (obscure), patterned, smoked, coloured and even hand painted. Glass pocket door systems are great in ensuites and bathrooms as a way of adding more usable space and light without moving walls or adding a skylight; a great addition to divide interior spaces such as a kitchen and dining room or living area and dining area, and they are perfect for home offices too.
B
Which glass door thickness are you installing – 8 or 10mm? Both 8mm and 10mm frameless glass doors are available. Both are tempered to the latest European standards and come as single and double pocket doors. The main difference is that the 8mm doors come with super strong clamps fitted on the door by the installer whereas the 10mm doors have ingenious dovetail hanging brackets that are pre-installed. The 10mm glass doors can also have a range of different handles and locks too. In the January article we mentioned the importance of installing the pocket
Q
door frame at finished floor level. This is hugely important when you are installing a glass pocket door. If you get this wrong with a timber door you can save the
situation by planing the bottom of the door to make it fit. You can’t with a glass door! So, installing the frame at finished floor level is crucial. ✔ TOP TIP: Take care when unpacking the glass door, it’s a two-person job! When handling a tempered glass door take EXTRA CARE to ensure you do not bang the corners or edges against anything. The glass is toughened by the tempering process but, like any tempered glass door, if you bang the edges, it will shatter. Eclisse glass doors comes with corner protectors but care is still needed. ✔ TOP TIP: Discard the timber floor guide that comes with the frame and install the glass floor guide which comes with the instructions with the glass door. The floor guide comes with 1mm packing plates but these are only required if you are fitting an 8mm glass door. Do not fit them if you are installing a 10mm glass door.

HANGING THE GLASS DOOR COULDN’T BE EASIER ✔ TOP TIP: Find the capstan head bolts in the glass door kit box as these replace the hexagonal head bolts supplied in the kit box with the frame. These bolts are needed as the two aluminium brackets fixed to the top of the door do not have room for adjusting hexagonal head bolts. Once installed, the capstan heads can be adjusted using the adjustment tool supplied. First wind the toothed locking nut onto the capstan headed bolts about half way down, then wind the bolts into the rollers in the top track. Hook the rear door bracket on the capstan headed bolt and feed the base of the door into glass floor guide. Partly slide the door into the pocket and hook the leading door bracket on to the remaining capstan headed bolt. Using a spirit level ensure the door is perfectly vertical. Adjust as needed by turning capstan headed bolts clockwise/anti-clockwise using adjustment tool provided until the door is level and square against the floor and doorpost. Provisionally tighten the locking nut down on to the top of the brackets using a 13mm spanner. Now test the smoothness of the running by sliding the door forwards and backwards into the pocket to ensure free movement
of the door. The door should open and close at the same speed when using the same amount of force to operate it. If you are happy with final position of door, hold the capstan headed bolt still by using the adjusting tool whilst tightening the locking nut with a 13mm spanner to achieve sufficient tightness. You are now ready to install the Eclisse jamb kit.
FITTING THE SPECIALLY DESIGNED JAMB KIT The specially designed jamb kit with a paint or stain ready beech veneer includes a door post with a recess the correct size for a glass door, a bumper strip that fits into the recess to stop the door from banging when it closes. It also includes vertical pieces for the pocket entrance, a top horizontal jamb and grey brushes that stop you seeing into the pocket. The jamb kit is fitted the same way as for a timber door. ✔ TOP TIP: Attach the top architrave with silicone. This is because if you would like to remove the door or access the extractable track in the future it is easier to remove the archtrave without damaging it if it has been attached with silicone rather than pinned in place.

STELLA PERFORMANCE
Stella Rooflight Director, Paul Trace, addresses the new rules for rooflights and thermal performance
Why the need for new regulations?
Q
A major part of the UK’s commitment to meeting its targets for carbon reduction is being driven by a tightening of the Building Regulations surrounding energy efficiency standards for homes. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) argues that by making our buildings more energy efficient and embracing smart technologies, we can cut energy bills, reduce demand for energy, and boost economic growth while meeting our targets for carbon reduction and maintaining healthy environments. As such it has introduced ‘The Future Homes Standard’ to ensure all new homes achieve a 30 per cent improvement in energy efficiency standards by 2025. The new Building Regulations aimed at achieving these targets will comprise five new Approved Documents, which will come into effect in June 2022. Manufacturers, architects, specifiers and customers looking to install rooflights and roof windows will be most interested in uplifts to the Approved Document L, Conservation of fuel and power Vol 1: Dwellings.
What do the new regulations state?
Q
For rooflights, skylights and roof windows (of which the definition is crucially important), the relevant consideration is the thermal transmittance. This is measured as a U-value in units of W/m²K, which stands for Watts/metre square Kelvin. The lower the U-value the more efficient the construction is at keeping heat flow through the structure to a minimum. The new regulations deem the worst acceptable U-values to be 2.2W/(m²K) for rooflights and 1.6 W(m²K) for roof windows. Rooflights v roof windows – what’s the difference? To correctly assess whether an element meets the new limiting U-value figure, the U-value must be calculated for the
Q
element in the appropriate plane – either horizontal or vertical. Now this makes a big difference, as testing the same product in either a horizontal or vertical position will make a significant difference to the resulting U-value figure. With the vertical position providing a much lower (better) U-value figure. According to the Approved Document the following definitions apply: Rooflight: A glazed unit installed out of plane with the surface of the roof on a kerb or upstand. Also sometimes referred to as a skylight. Roof window: A window installed in the same orientation as, and in plane with, the surrounding roof. Therefore, while we might refer to our product as a rooflight or skylight, the official terminology for a conservation rooflight, which is designed to sit flush within a roof line, should be a roof window. According to the Approved Document, the U-values for roof windows should be calculated based on a vertical position. For rooflights, U-values should be calculated based on a horizontal position. Further guidance in the Building Research Establishment’s BR 443 tells us that U-values for roof windows and

rooflights are usually quoted for the in the vertical plane. This allows comparison of different products that could be used at different inclinations. However, for the purposes for calculating heat losses from buildings, U-values should relate to the plane of the component as installed in the building. This can be done by calculating the Uvalue of rooflights and roof windows, allowing for the angle of the roof in respect of both surface resistances and gas space resistances. Alternatively, the following adjustments can be made to Uvalues assessed for the component in the vertical plane. See Figure 1 (below). What is the best U-value that you are likely to achieve? It is important to understand that there is much ambiguity surrounding rooflights, skylights and roof windows and the Uvalues quoted by various manufacturers. The much-coveted U-value figure has become a powerful sales tool for those claiming to be ‘the best performing’ or ‘most thermally efficient’ rooflight on the market and you will often see figures
Q
advertised that are misleading at best, at worst, completely untrue! Some companies might even try and confuse you by quoting the centre pane figure for the glass, rather than a whole frame Uvalue, which is the legal requirement. In any case, caution is advised when researching the various products available and you should always request evidence to support the thermal performance claims made. U-value calculations for roof windows and rooflights must be undertaken by an approved UKAS accredited product certification agency, who will calculate accurate thermal performance figures based on the individual make up of components in the product’s construction. Given that Stella use only the finest quality materials in our manufacturing processes, from the highest specification glazing, to our high quality handmade hardwood liners, through to the best quality rubbers and seals, we are confident in claiming that our roof windows are among the best performing on the market, with our triple glazed, fixed product achieving a U-value of 1.1 W(m²K).

A huge caveat for conservation properties – exemptions for historic and traditional dwellings While it is not always the case, it stands to reason that the majority of conservation rooflights are installed in traditional properties, barn conversions, and listed buildings. If your project involves such a property, you may find that there are exemptions to these new regulations. The Approved Document states that the energy efficiency of historic and traditional dwellings should be improved only if doing so will not cause long-term deterioration of the building’s fabric or fittings. New extensions to historical and traditional dwellings should comply fully with the energy efficiency standards, unless there is a need to match the external appearance or character of the extension to that of the host building. In which case, the work should comply with standards in the approved document to the extent that it is reasonably practicable. In determining whether full energy efficiency improvements should be made, the building control body should consider the advice of the local authority’s conservation officer. Matt Castles, technical manager at Cedral, looks at the differences between warm and cold roof insulation and its implications for contractors. hile we all know that about a quarter of all heat energy in homes escapes through the roof, the number of poorly insulated houses in the UK is less well understood. In 2019 the UK government introduced a legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Making houses less energy intensive is all part of this.
W
Warm and cold roofs There are two ways to categorise how a roof has been set up to manage heat – a warm roof or a cold roof. It’s a simple concept, but amazing how many builders A cold-roof
I
66 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
get it wrong when constructing a house or extension – especially where condensation is concerned. ‘Cold roof’ insulation is usually positioned between the ceiling joists and is often used when planning dictates a lower roof. As the roof rafters and remaining roof structure are not directly insulated, the loft remains ‘cold.’ This is why careful consideration of condensation is needed to ensure the roof system works correctly. If the installation is not correct – through either poor fitting or low-quality products – the temperature of the house can also be significantly affected through thermal bridging, with the cooler A warm-roof
temperature of the roof rafters transferring to the structure below or heat escaping into the loft. When it comes to meeting the criteria for the Future Homes Standard, correctly installed continuous insulation takes less time to fit and costs less. Insulation usually takes place during the initial building construction as it can be a significant task to retrofit later in the building’s life. Installation of insulation layers within the roof structure can be accessed more readily without expensive retrofit costs, especially the insulation at the eaves. A ‘warm’ roof is usually a lot easier to build – in the case of extensions, for example – and involves putting insulation
066_PB_JUNE22_Layout 1 04/05/2022 10:17 Page 67
on the ‘top’ of the roof – ie. directly beneath the roof tiles and breather membrane panel. Installing a warm roof with insulation sheets and a vapour control layer is important to prevent the build-up of condensation, as the increased overall temperature of the roof usually combats the creation of unwanted ‘dew points’. When a roof pitch is made higher to accommodate a warm roof system – and hence has longer rafters – fibre cement slates are a good option as they are lighter than natural slates, and last just as long on the roof when installed correctly.
Coping with condensation The Building Regulation Part C sets out that “roofs should be designed and constructed so that their structural and thermal performance are not adversely affected by interstitial condensation.” The key for roofers is to ensure that the ventilation in the roof space is well considered and delivered when installing a roof. There are a wide range of products
designed to assist roofers with any ventilation challenge – from specially designed eaves, concealed tile options, ridge and top abutment ventilators. Which device to choose will be dictated by the dimensions and pitch of the required roof design. It is recommended that a ventilation system within the roof is installed to create a circulatory air flow and crossflow ventilation. There is a lot of industry guidance on this issue, and Cedral Roofs cites BS 5250 which provides the minimum requirements for roof ventilation. Another important aspect of managing condensation in the roof is the installation of underlay. Here in the UK there are three main types of product on the market. Non-breathable underlay is a more traditional solution and needs to be installed with appropriate ventilation systems to be as effective as required. Vapour permeable underlay is very popular in the UK and is designed to let moisture out without letting moisture back in. It is BBA certified for use in tiled ventilated cold roof constructions but
needs to be secured and draped correctly so following the manufacturer guidance during installation is essential. Thirdly, air permeable underlay systems are a relatively new entrant to the market. They can release more moisture than a vapour permeable underlay. However, there are two key notes of caution: 1) they are not yet acknowledged by British Standard BS 5250 which means they should be selected carefully depending on the project and 2) they are more expensive and if a strong ventilation system is in place the impact of the air permeable underlay is no better than other underlay solutions. The best way to control condensation within a roof space is to not cut corners. Use and install the best underlay solution for the project at hand and install a suitable ventilation system to ensure the long-term performance of the finished roof. TECHNICAL TEAM TIPS – NO 37
Sam Tebbs, Training Manager at Marley
There are several key factors at play that are pushing the drive towards sustainability – the current energy security crisis, climate emergency, changes to Part L of the Building Regulations and, most recently, the government’s spring statement which announced that VAT on installing energysaving materials in residential properties would be cut to 0 per cent.
Why upskill? Significantly, the VAT cut will likely provide a host of opportunities in the retro-fit market to roofing contractors and, whilst investment will be necessary to ensure that they have upskilled their workforce, and are qualified to fit solar panels, the benefits and ongoing opportunities far out-weigh the costs.
Why MCS? Importantly, residential solar systems in the UK must be MCS accredited in order to be eligible for a Smart Export Guarantee – which is the new way that homeowners are paid for their power. If they generate more than they require, the surplus will be put on the grid. As well as giving customers peace of mind, the certification can also help grow a roofing contractor’s business as people will often search specifically for an MCS Certified installer for this important reason – if their system is not MCS certified, they can’t get a Smart Export Guarantee and they can’t sell their surplus energy back to the grid. Being MCS certified means that you
With increased demand for cleaner, renewable energy sources such as solar, roofers need to make sure that they are upskilled and qualified – for example, MCS accredited – to take full advantage. Sam Tebbs, Training Manager at Marley, explains. can offer solar services yourself, including managing the process and pricing for customers, without being reliant on other contractors. In addition, having the capability to offer a full roof system installation, including solar, will boost your business as the need to engage with different contractors is reduced, streamlining the process.
Help and support all the way Upskilling your workforce may seem like a daunting prospect, especially for smaller companies who may not already have the quality systems in place that are required for the MCS accreditation. However, when it comes to demonstrating the operation of a Quality Management System (QMS), for example, MCS provides a host of online resources for roofers to utilise, such as templates found within the Standards and Tools Library section of the MCS website: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH061
In addition, Marley can help with proof of solar PV installation quality and training course attendance. For roofing contractors purchasing the full Marley SolarTile® system, on-site installation training (for the first installation) is provided. Counting towards the MCS certification, this documented and verified
installation training represents a real bonus to roofers working towards the MCS accreditation.
Next steps To become MCS certified, you need to get the appropriate training for solar PV connection and apply to a certification body to arrange assessment. There are four elements that are required to become MCS certified: 쎲 A commitment to quality workmanship – including assessment against MCS 001 Standard and the specific technical standard for solar. 쎲 A commitment to customer care – membership of a Trading Standards Institute (TSI) such as the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) or the Home Insulation & Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme (HIES) is required. 쎲 Demonstrating competency – via qualifications or demonstrating experience. 쎲 Quality Management System (QMS) – demonstrating the operation of a QMS. If you need guidance with any aspect of MCS certification, call the MCS Helpdesk Team on 0333 103 8130 or visit: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH062
Finally, the application normally costs £595 + VAT for the company – not for each individual. However, as part of Marley’s ‘Supporting the Roofer’ initiative, all roofing businesses can claim a £50 discount on their MCS certification application via a collaboration with NAPIT. INSULATION
No.10
SAFETY FIRST Buildings must be built to minimise the risk of fire and provide safe escape routes. This month Bradley Hirst, Technical Services Manager from Knauf Insulation, explains the important role insulation plays in the fire safety of buildings.
How is fire safety performance measured? There are two principal fire safety performance measures relating to insulation; fire resistance and reaction to fire. It’s important to understand the difference because they contribute to fire safety in different ways.
What does reaction to fire mean?
What is fire resistance? Fire resistance measures the ability of a material or system to resist and ideally prevent, the passage of fire from one distinct area to another. Building Regulations state that certain elements, such as partitions, separating walls, ceilings and beam and column constructions, must provide specified amounts of fire resistance. Insulation products designed and rigorously tested to provide fire resistance, such as Knauf Insulation’s Fire-teK Beam and Column Slab, protect load-bearing structures so occupants can escape. Manufactured from Rock Mineral Wool, Fire-teK Beam and Column Slab is non-combustible with a melting point of over 1,000°C and can provide up to two hours fire resistance for structural steel.
Reaction to fire measures how a material or system will contribute to the fire’s development and spread, particularly in the very early stages when evacuation is crucial. The Euroclass classification system measures whether a material will ignite, produce smoke or flaming droplets. Ratings range from F (the lowest) to A1 (the highest). Building Regulations in England and Wales ban the use of combustible insulation on buildings above 18m tall (11m in Scotland). But there is growing pressure to use noncombustible insulation on every project. For example, the recent Homes for Londoners standards ban the use of combustible materials in the external walls of all homes, regardless of their height. Using non-combustible insulation as standard, such as Knauf Insulation Glass and Rock Mineral Wool, is the best way to minimise fire risk and gives your customers peace of mind that their buildings are safe to use, occupy and enjoy.

Adrian Barraclough runs Quickslide, one of Britain’s leading window & door manufacturers.
OPEN SEASON... It’s June so you will already have been fitting your fair share of bifolds/sliders/French and every other type of garden door that we Brits buy in the tens of thousands. It’s a consistently buoyant sector and one that is well served by hundreds of different suppliers, and at every price point. Which often means that it is difficult to choose one over another or to make a decent margin as prices are so openly quoted by suppliers. So why not go in with something different? What’s Hot: Art Deco Garden Doors…Strike whilst the aluminium is hot! We are now doing a lot of aluminium Heritage-style doors in single or double/French configurations, that beautifully emulate the old ‘Crittall’ style steel windows and doors and once again led by ‘Grand Designs’ influence. Many homeowners and even professional designers, are installing these not just as a replacement for old steel frames, but to introduce a minimalist ‘art deco’ elegance into ordinary

homes. The effect is very pleasing and makes a statement that ordinary bifolds and sliders simply don’t make anymore, if only for the reason that everyone has them these days! Choose Heritage doors in single or double configuration with or without side and toplights, with a choice of inward or outward configurations, the ultra slim 47mm profile providing maximum glass area and minimal sightlines for virtually uninterrupted vistas. Surface bars add an extra element of intrigue – choose two or four to suite the client’s taste, without seriously impeding the view out. And with modern security and insulation performance too! Colours? Has to be black for the full art deco touch and for a lovely extra touch, my factory will shortly be producing some hand-made matching internal doors. That is how big we think this trend will be…get in at the beginning before every man and his dog sells them! What’s Cool: Rooflights are on the up! Rooflights have come a long way since the first leaky, difficult-to-fit types and you can now design them into extensions and loft conversions

WITH with complete confidence in the knowledge that the quality will be bang on and installation will be simple and fault free. Designs suit all building styles and performance is way up there and besting the Regulations to ensure you don’t build any cold spots into your project. Clean slim lines and top security are a given but make sure you push your customer towards self-cleaning glass to keep them clear and spotless.
Watch out for: June 15th! Why? Because that is the day when the revised Building Regulations kick in. Install any windows and doors that perform to the old standards on or after this date, and they will fail any building inspection. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that every door and window that you buy from now on will automatically meet the new regs. I have been alarmed at the number of manufacturers that are still offering products to the old standards of insulation as well as completely ignoring strict new requirements for trickle vents – which are the easiest things for the inspectors to check!

GONE IN 60 SECONDS A builder’s van is a tempting target for criminals. Dan Powell from Honest John Vans shares his top security tips. Getting your van broken into is every tradesperson’s nightmare. From losing the tools of your trade to the disruption of having to sort out a suitable hire van, it can mean a lot of lost time and money. Luckily, there are some precautions you can take to help protect yourself from thieves. Here are the top five security tips from Dan Powell, Editor of Honest John Vans.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
No.16
To conclude our Toolbox series with Makita, we are giving one lucky reader the chance to get their hands on the DK0014G202 XGT 40VMax 2piece Combo Kit – in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary of trading in the UK. There are over 270 products in the Makita LXT range The power tool and equipment industry can generate some lively debate on job sites up and down the country. Many professionals have strong opinions when it comes to the colour of the tools in their toolbox and what the best products are. The tealblue colour associated with Makita is one that many are familiar with and will associate with expertise in cordless tool technology. In fact, the company, founded in 1915, has been active in the UK for 50 years this year – plenty of time to build a legion of Makita fans and brand advocates – which is to be expected, given the company’s investment into product
development and battery performance. Through this investment – and with this experience – Makita has a strong understanding of what professionals need. Many will agree that the company offers an extensive product range that equips the end user with the equipment needed to handle a wide range of tasks with ease and aid on site efficiency and productivity. With over 100 years of heritage and since entering the UK market 50 years ago, the manufacturer has evolved its cordless ranges to provide users with an array of machines that offer the improved flexibility and safety needed for regular, professional use.
Looking back
LXT
Makita launched its first battery-powered product in 1969; the 6500D Drill could be connected to a rechargeable battery using a short lead. In 1978, the company launched the 6010D – its first power tool with a built-in rechargeable 7.2V battery. Since then, the company has introduced several more efficient battery technologies and has perfected a wide range of cordless products that deliver the power, speed, and run-time to handle any project.
2005 saw the launch of the 18V LXT platform, offering professionals a safer and more flexible solution that also enables them to work disruptionfree for longer. Due to their energy density capacity, lithium-ion batteries offer high output and can work for long periods of time between charges. The introduction of LXT batteries enabled tradespeople to charge their tools at any time – as these batteries do not have to be drained down completely before charging. They also have minimal selfdischarge, which enables users to ensure that their batteries are

always fully charged at the beginning of the workday. Since then there’s been further work to optimise the battery charging process, to ensure that LXT batteries continue to perform at their optimum. Makita has designed its batteries to communicate with the charger and this allows the charger to identify any issues with the battery, such as over discharge or overheating. The charger will then work to rectify any issues (for example, by cooling the battery down before charging commences) to ensure no damage is caused to the battery – and make the charging process faster and more efficient. As a result of this process, the company’s 18V LXT lithium-ion batteries can be charged in as little as 22minutes (for 3.0Ah batteries) up to 55minutes (for 6.0Ah batteries) – enabling professionals to keep their tools going throughout the day.

With over 270 LXT products in its range, professionals can easily switch between applications and tasks using the same battery to provide the power.
XGT Most recently, Makita launched its XGT 40VMax and 80VMax battery platform, engineered to achieve the optimum power required for heavier load applications without sacrificing run time. In fact, the XGT 40VMax and 80VMax machines can deliver output that rivals the equivalent petrol and corded products without the noise, emissions, and challenges of working around trailing cables and storing, transporting, and handling fuel. Similar to the LXT platform, XGT batteries have been designed for rapid charging and optimised run times. A 2.5Ah XGT battery will charge in just 28 minutes,
a 4.0Ah battery in just 45 minutes, and a 5.0Ah battery in approximately 50 minutes, minimising user downtime. They have also been built for durability and feature a secure connection mechanism that prevents accidental detachment and a heavy duty, shock absorbing outer casing and cell holder that protects from accidental heavy impacts. What’s more, the batteries are IPX4 rated with a triple layer waterproofing, which means they are splash and shower proof – ideal for those working outdoors in unpredictable weather. The expanding XGT range now comprises over 50 machines, including construction tools such as circular and mitre saws, impact drivers and brad nailers – and outdoor power equipment such as blowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, linetrimmers and split shaft multifunction tools.
XGT machines can deliver outputs that rival the equivalent petrol and corded products

WORKWEAR
KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER
Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh reviews some of Scruffs favourite summer products Working on a hot day can feel like running a marathon in a heat wave, so the correct workwear in the warmer weather is important. I’m not one to usually wear work shorts, not because I think they look scruffy, but simply as I’m so used to wearing work trousers. So, I was open to the suggestion of some Scruffs Trade Flex Shorts. It felt strange at first as I’m used to having knee pads on, but I suppose when wearing shorts, you can always wear the strap on knee pads which give you the option to put them on and take them off as and when required. However, as well as keeping you cool, they felt cool. They’re slim fit, so won’t easily get caught when walking around on site and, if you did happen to catch them, they are made from ripstop fabric. Looking closer at the detail, they have a triple stitch seam for durability and flexible panels that are stretchy, allowing for greater freedom of movement. I’m also used to having loads of pockets, which is one thing these aren’t short of – with six in total.
I also tried Scruffs Argon Safety Trainers. The tough nylon upper makes them extremely durable and, thanks to a composite toe, they are light in weight. It’s a lot to absorb in terms of all the technology used and they even have shock absorption to reduce stress on the foot and ankle. They also have a memory foam insole, which provides extra cushioning. As well as that, the Microfresh technology reduces odours – even after a long day on your feet.

I also got hands on with Scruffs Cut Resistant Gloves. I usually find the gloves that claim to be cut resistant a bit difficult to work in because they tend to be thick. However, the snug fit of these gloves means that the fingers can move freely, and I can even pick up screws, which is always a good test. At the same time, it means you can get hands on with the toughest jobs and at the end of the day your hands will feel and look like you’ve not done a day’s work.

THE TOUGH GET GOING Tibby Singh is working smart with the ToughBuilt Quickset Work Bench I’ve used a few work benches in the past and found that their legs start to wobble at the first sight of a load. When I found out that ToughBuilt has recently launched its new Quickset Work Bench, I was intrigued to see if it is really is tough enough. The first thing I noticed – apart from it obviously being a flat pack – was that it weighs more than any other work bench I have come across, which is a good initial sign – because as I would hope that weight translates to stability. Next I thought the instructions were missing from the box but in fact you don’t need any, as you just press and play. By pressing one button, that says ‘1’, it sets up in one second – and then you can get to play. The metal legs certainly help to stabilise the unit and, with quick reference measurement markings in inches, centimetres and degrees on the work surface itself, it’s not only strong but
smart. It’s also got holes and slots in the top which can be used as clamping points. This is important from a safety perspective because if you’re cutting or drilling anything you know it’s not going to be jumping around and putting your fingers at risk. ToughBuilt also produce ClipTech tool belts, pouches and bags, which can be interchanged quickly and effortlessly using the clip system. This is also incorporated into the Quickset Work Bench, which means you can have your tools in the pouch, keeping the work surface safe and tidy. It has one ClipTech hub with the option to fit four, one in each corner. The pouch isn’t included with the work bench, but there are various options available separately. I’m not a betting man myself but, having previously taken the same manufacturer’s Sawhorse for a run – which could carry some extreme weight – I had good odds on the work bench being
able to as well. You’ll get a good return on your money, as it can support up to a huge 454kg (1,000 lbs). It’s fair to say that this ToughBuilt Quickset Work Bench isn’t a DIY work bench but ideal for both DIYers and tradespeople alike. Its versatility allows it to be folded up, minimising the space it occupies, whilst making transport easier in the van or a car. If you’re starting off as an apprentice, for example, don’t have a van, and want to look and feel professional, it’s a great go to work bench. ToughBuilt has lived up to its name again and it will be tough going to bring this work bench down. FOR MORE INFO ON THE TOUGHBUILT QUICKSET WORK BENCH VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAH070

WORKWEAR
YOU CAN BET YOUR BOOTS! Guard against joining the ranks of the working wounded with a new style of safety footwear from Buckbootz. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones looks at the bANG guardz.
As a brand Buckbootz was founded on the principle of identifying the flaws in existing safety footwear and taking steps to eliminate them. Following the company’s inception in 1998 one of its earliest propositions was a safety dealer boot, for example – or Chelsea boot as they are sometimes called – and these have developed into a popular form of on-site footwear. Not only are they easy to slip on and off, without laces to break – or spontaneously untie at inopportune moments – but the clean, uncluttered lines of a design which tapers smoothly up the ankle will also satisfy the style conscious. At the same time, the stretch panels at the sides that are essential for all that convenience in fit will equally negate the inclusion of a padded collar – or additional ankle support – which means there’s inherently less protection
in that area. Thanks to two years of research and testing the bANg guardz range from Buckbootz is taking the next step in dealer safety boot design with a unique, deceptively simple and rather clever solution.
Ankle protection “Why not”, suggested the boot boffins at Buckbootz headquarters, “move the stretch area into the front?” That then allows for the addition of protection panels at the point of both the inner and outer ankle, as well as the aforementioned padded collar, and the added reinforcement of a back heel piece – all to EN/ UKCA standard. Indeed, if Achilles had been sporting a pair of boots like the BSH014 BR model we were asked to test in the midst of the sacking of Troy then the story might have been very different – as would the name for that particular anatomical feature. As it is the eponymous bANG guardz are strategically placed to cover the

Lateral Malleolus and surrounding joints, which is the bony protrusion on either side of the ankle – and a body part which never acquired the kind of kudos of being named after a Greek demi-god. (Funny bone was already taken but the effect of a whack on it is much the same – it’s really no laughing matter). Indeed, for the self-employed in particular on-site injury can be a very serious problem – not least the loss of earnings whilst incapacitated. Any detail in the design that can fortify your feet against the multiple threats they face on a daily basis will be a builder’s friend. Of course, the more features a boot has the more weight you’re potentially introducing but the beauty of the bANg guardz concept is that it’s one component in a non-metallic whole. As a result, remaining relatively fleet of foot further reduces stress on the joints and provides all-day working comfort. Work your way down that elegantly fluted dealer boot body, and you’ll reach

wise howell
a non-slip heat resistant sole, a durable anti-scuff toe guard, and Nail Stop midsole, for instance, all of which combine to create the kind of defence for your feet that looks like it’s been engineered for a war zone. In fact, so confident is Buckbootz in the durability and robustness of its products that the manufacturer offers a unique “Body And Sole Together Forever” guarantee. The boots are fully waterproof, including the elastic element, with a maximum S3 HRO AN SRC safety rating and maximum slip resistance. Not only does a non-metallic toe cap reduce the weight it will also prevent the conduction of cold and heat to the feet. Add to that reflective strips on the rear and you have footwear that seems to have thought of everything. Our test pair was in an attractive dark brown but they’re also available in black.
Fit to a T The first thing you will notice when putting on these boots is how effortlessly they slide in place, all thanks to an inner heel construction which facilitates fit. We’re also assured by the manufacturer that it’s a feature that will prevent any damage to the back lining over time. Once acquainted with your feet these dealer boots are a satisfyingly snug wear. Whilst we all may have learnt to tie our shoelaces during our formative years, it can still be a rather hit and miss affair in terms of comfort, especially if we’re in a hurry, but the elasticated panels provide a consistently firm grip around the ankle, with no discernible slippage. If, however, you prefer laces then there is a version for you with the product code BSH012, which benefits from all the same bANG guardz features as its dealer boot sibling. Whilst the bANg guardz panels provide protection they are in no way obtrusive. In truth, it’s a concept that satisfies safety, aesthetics and convenience for the wearer all at the same time. They’re reassuringly sturdy, stable in the wet and don’t overheat or tire the feet after prolonged wear – and should go down with a bANg amongst builders. Do you charge by the hour? If so, what are you actually charging your clients for? Is it your brute strength, or your understanding of the Building Regulations, or your cunning knowledge of the best mortar mix for bedding paving slabs? In reality, it’s all of those things. Your current hourly rate is a payback for all your years of learning, training and practicing your skills, so that your client gets a good job done, in the shortest possible time, using the best methods and materials, according to the latest industry standards. Well, that’s the theory, anyway. When I take my van into the garage to have the clutch fixed, the garage owner charges me £55 per hour for his mechanic’s time. It hurts me to pay this, especially if it takes him four hours to do it. But he has to pay for the rent on his garage, for his insurance, his car lift and his other tools. And the mechanic knows how to fix a clutch, whereas I don’t. On the occasions when I have needed to employ a solicitor, they have charged me £250 to £300 per hour. And they don’t even have to rent a garage or buy a car lift or get their hands dirty! But they have had to study for donkey’s years to get where they are. And they know exactly what’s what in the legal world, whereas I clearly don’t. Professional builders, too, have their tools, their overheads, and their years of education and training. They
should be proud to charge a proper professional hourly or daily rate for their expertise. The only problem is that most private clients don’t have the slightest idea about how much training and experience goes into making a good builder, which opens the door for any Tom, Dick or Harry to start calling himself a “builder”, and charging the same rates as the rest of us. I know a bloke exactly like this, who charges himself out at £300 per day cash, and has no building industry training at all. He is quite handy at carpentry, in a DIY sort of way, but nowhere up to the speed that you’d expect from a tradesman. He knows how to wallpaper a bedroom, and he can paint anything that’s not moving, as we all can. But the last time I saw him, he was trying to lay bricks, and mixing the mortar with his client’s garden spade. Yeah, I know – whilst charging £300 per day. Still, it’s not for me to grass him up. The British building industry remains totally unregulated. Fortunately, most of us have the training, the skills, and the experience, and we should be proud to charge the going rate for our work.
