“You don’t have to be mad to work here – but it helps” …. So says the old adage, and one which will certainly resonate with a good few who make their living from construction, given all its intrinsically linked economic turmoil, endless red tape and customer and supplier frustrations. And, of course, that was long before all the collateral damage to potential earnings of a worldwide pandemic. It begs the question, of course, was there a screw loose in the first place? Or does the industry itself drive these otherwise sane persons to the point of distraction?

Remarkably, it would seem, the unimaginably destabilising events of the past twelve months have actually done nothing to dissuade budding entrepreneurs that their long-term future lies in the building sector. In fact, a new survey by Circleloop confirms that specialised construction activities currently tops the list of the ten industries with the most active start-ups and new businesses, with an impressive 245,230 taking the plunge.

Significant sales increases have been reported by most of the chains and this is backed up by another survey from Rated People, with almost fifty per cent of households undertaking a project during 2020. Of course, there is no way of knowing just how successful those improvements were in reality, but you can safely assume that a pretty large percentage were unmitigated disasters requiring professional assistance along the way. (See our DI-WHY? pages for confirmation!)

In the short term this is certainly good news for already established contractors, but the proliferation of home improvements could also have wider implications for our industry.

Those trying their hand at DIY jobs for the first time may have discovered a penchant for the practical and learned first-hand the actual skill levels required to undertake certain tasks. With long periods of furlough, changing work patterns, and the lurking threat of redundancy, some individuals may have stumbled upon a new-found love for a particular trade, and are looking to take those new-found skills and passion to a much wider audience. In the process they will almost certainly have a new level of respect for tradespeople – especially those who may have had to come to their rescue.

Whilst some may well groan at the prospect, or be wary of increased competition, we should remember that the sector is always in need of new blood and ideas. The average age of building contractors needs lowering, with reports suggesting that a fifth of all construction workers are over 55 or will look to retire by 2030. Plus, there are persistent calls for more to be done across the board to bring more individuals – especially young people let down by the current education system – into the industry. The recent National Apprenticeship Week highlighted this worrying disparity and showed how employers and young people can benefit from vocational opportunities. With the proper on the job training, and a guiding hand from more experienced professionals, these youngsters can very quickly be making a serious contribution to the well-being of a business and could well be fronting up their own enterprise, whilst many of their contemporaries are still working their way through University.

It hasn’t been easy to take any positives out of the past twelve months but, as the dark clouds start to recede, a new-found interest and respect for the construction industry, and its participants, could be a very timely silver lining.

Encouraging economic data reveals continued growth in the construction industry The Prime Minister’s call to ‘build, build, build’ has been taken on board by tradespeople as the bounceback becomes a boom in some sectors.

Housebuilding is performing strongly, and the level of job creation is running at its highest level for two years. Moreover, the IHS MARKIT/CIPS UK Construction Total Activity Index rose by its sharpest pace since September 2014, and the built environment remains the fastest growing part of the economy.

Growth projections are now at their most upbeat since June 2015, with requests for development and refurbishment finance on an upward curve.

In addition, the Construction Product

Association’s (CPA) State of Trade Survey has revealed that 41 per cent of heavy side manufacturers, and 46 per cent of light side manufacturers, have reported an increase in sales in Q1, with the same organisation’s Spring Forecast further forecasting double-digit growth for the industry this year. The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) is, however, warning that materials shortages remain a concern and is asking builders to plan ahead, with timber, aggregates and cement among a long list of products likely to experience supply issues.

The FMB has welcomed the ‘Help to Build’ fund

Small to medium-sized (SME) house builders will need access to more small sites to help a new generation of people build their own home, according to the Federation of Master Builders. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “With almost 1 in 2 (46 per cent) SMEs saying that their output is hampered by a ‘lack of available and viable land’, local authorities must allocate more small sites in their local plans for incremental development. The Government must also urgently bring forward more funding for time-poor local authority planning departments to help them make decisions more quickly on planning applications.”

Self-employed tradespeople have enjoyed their best month for earnings since the start of the pandemic, according to Hudson Contract.

Average weekly pay rose by 3.7 per cent to £920 during March, the highest figure since February 2020. This is 57 per cent higher than the median weekly pay for full-time employees. “Our latest figures show that self-employed tradespeople are reaping the rewards for their enterprise and efforts,” enthuses Ian Anfield, managing director.

“Self-employment in construction offers financial freedom and flexibility for highly skilled individuals and enables projects to be completed safely, on time and on budget.”

The best-performing regions for earnings growth were Yorkshire and the Humber (+7.5 per cent), the East of England (+5 per cent) and the West Midlands (+4.9 per cent).

Environment Agency calls on builders to follow duty of care Over the past year, the EA has taken action against those illegally collecting and dumping significant waste originating from builders. In some cases, workers have been admitted to A&E following the collection of contaminated waste, unscrupulous skip businesses have collected building site waste only to dump it, and career criminals have made millions dealing in waste that they go on to burn or bury. The Environment Agency is calling on all construction and demolition sites that produce, transport, treat or dispose of waste to fulfil their duty of care.

BAND OF BUILDERS

The construction industry has come together to help Band of Builders transform the home of a chartered surveyor left paralysed after a fall at home.

Rob Lamb, 58, suffered a severe spinal cord injury when he fainted due to low blood pressure at home in October, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. After hearing about his situation, national construction charity Band of Builders stepped in to make the changes needed to make Rob’s home safe, comfortable and accessible. In just nine days a total of around 60 tradespeople carried out a raft of changes including the creation of a downstairs bedroom and wet room, installation of underfloor heating and air conditioning.

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) has described the relaxation of planning rules as “laying the foundations for a postpandemic future”. According to the organisation’s Hannah Vickers this “brownfield first approach” will “support the revitalisation of the high street and bring life back to town and city centres across the UK.” Other built environment bodies have, however, been less positive, citing potential issues with quality, and the eradication of essential services. The Royal Town Planning Institute has joined forces with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) to call on the Prime Minister to reverse the regulations changes that will enable unused commercial buildings to be changed into homes.

DEVELOPING ISSUES Dear Professional Builder Whilst most of our work is refurb stuff, we’ve also combined that with sub-contracting on new build projects. It’s been a bit of an ambition for a while now to try our hand at developing our own sites, because there is big demand for new homes in our area, but I have to say the early experiences have not been positive. Finding a suitable plot, and planning permission, is an effort in itself, but the finance is also a hurdle. We thought we’d approach a few lenders, and not just our own bank – and had the Gross Development Values and all our numbers prepared – but every potential financer had a different answer, so it’s a huge amount of additional work just to find the best terms.

A firm like ours is not interested in producing a volume product with the highest possible mark-up. Instead, we focus on quality, and there are a lot of SME building firms like ours that see the merit in undertaking property development projects. The problem is that the system is not making that easy for us. ● Eugene Byrne, Colchester, Essex PB: If the government is to achieve its own house building targets it is true that it will need more small builders taking on the work and there are signs that it is starting to recognise that imperative.

The recently introduced Help to Build Fund and Self and Custom Build Action Plan are designed to give SMEs more leverage to enter the market, for instance, but it is true that significant barriers still do remain.

ith their vans parked up for much of the day builders are acutely vulnerable to opportunistic thieves. That’s an all-too familiar tale for tradespeople, of course, and a lament that Greg Smith, MP was hearing from his constituents on a regular basis. The Conservative politician is now championing the fight against the thieves with the introduction of a ten-minute rule bill to parliament.

“We had a spate of vans being broken into in the town of Buckingham,” recalls Greg, “and these were predominately in the day while tradespeople were actually on a job. Beyond the usual arguments of more boobies on the beat and CCTV, the challenge for legislators is to ask ourselves what practical measures can be put in place to prevent this from happening?”

However illicit their trade might be criminals operate on familiar principles of supply and demand. Whilst there is a market for second-hand tools – and the means to dispose of them – there will be those who will be willing to overcome whatever security might be in place to protect them. There are many welldocumented ways that builders can make it harder for the light-fingered fraternity to relieve them of what is effectively their livelihoods. Strong locks, loud alarms, removing tools from vehicles at night and

recording serial numbers should all be prerequisites, but what builders can’t control is what has become a huge online marketplace for stolen equipment.

“The way we’ve approached the idea is to think about how we cut off the means to sell on stolen goods online and monetise the crime,” continues the Bucks MP. “Clearly it’s not the case that all stolen tools are sold on the internet, but a lot are, and closing down that route could potentially make these offences less profitable for the perpetrator.”

The legislation that Greg has introduced to the House of Commons as a Private Members Bill would compel online marketplaces and auction sites to include

the serial number as part of the description of any tool that’s for sale on its sites. “The authorities could then search against stolen items, and identify illegal sales,” he explains “It would then, of course, be beholden on builders to make sure that they have recorded the serial numbers of any tools they own, and for these to be recorded by the police when the crime is reported – and subsequently stored on a database – but it would have the effect of introducing a degree of traceability into the system. There could even be procedures in place where these online platforms are being continuously searched for stolen items for sale.”

Because there is often an assumption that it will be a waste of time, it is a fact that the likes of van break-ins are an under-reported form of crime, but here again Greg believes his plan could encourage more people to come forward.

“Tradespeople have told me that they’ve had tools nicked but haven’t reported it because they know they’ll never see them again, and the police won’t do anything, but if we can empower law enforcement to be able to search against the serial number and uncover the proceeds of these crimes, we can remove the excuse from the authorities that they don’t have the resources to do anything about it.

Indeed, they’ll be able to act upon it without having to leave their desk. A builder themselves could even search these sites to see if any of the tools

they’ve lost turn up on them.”

When presented to parliament, Greg’s Ten Minute Rule Bill was ultimately unsuccessful in entering the statute book as law, but he believes that it could still form the basis of a much wider recognition of the issue, whilst encouraging further debate, and it’s a problem on which he is determined to continue to campaign. “I’m not trying to pretend that this proposal is going to solve the problem, because it isn’t, but it is a practical way of removing some of the incentive for committing these crimes in the first place. I think there is a perception that commercial crime, such as stealing from tradespeople or businesses, is less injurious to the victim than, say, a home burglary,” concludes Greg. “In reality, however, these thieves are depriving an individual of the means to make a living. We all recognise the authorities have to balance competing priorities – and resources – but there should be more of an acknowledgement of their seriousness.”

Training remains the backbone of the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) espite a year of unprecedented challenge and change, training and standards remain at the very heart of DHF’s objectives and operations.

The Tamworth-based trade association – also one of the UK’s oldest, having been formed in 1897 – represents all the key players in locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates sectors. It works tirelessly towards the maintaining and raising of quality and standards across the industry.

And, as an experienced organisation with significant longevity, it has certainly witnessed its fair share of economic uncertainty and societal shifts since its inception, never more so than during last year’s Covid19 crisis. Yet, it remained a solid and steadfast beacon of hope and positivity for its members, adopting a ‘business as usual’ approach from the outset and a rapid ability to adapt to the unpredictable industry changes.

Installer courses

Fully committed to continuing to provide a first-rate level of training, by April 2020, just as the first lockdown had started to take effect, the organisation had already launched online courses for its members, regardless of their locality. Level 2 Award courses in Automated Gate & Traffic Barrier Safety and Industrial & Garage Door Safety, ideal for installers, were filmed and edited to enable DHF to successfully share knowledge with its learners. Classroom learning was re-

instated at DHF’s Tamworth-based training academy in June, albeit limited to six delegates in total and, in the weeks that followed, a ‘Distance Learning Programme’ (DLP) was delivered via Zoom by DHF’s Training and Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins, with examinations taken via the online facility. This unique undertaking has enabled those at a distance to maintain their training obligations.

During 2020, the federation held a number of two-hour virtual seminars for members’ customers on the importance of safety – and their legal responsibilities – for owners of automated products. And

USE YOUR HEAD Hard Hat Awareness Week highlights the importance of appropriate head protection, as Chris Tidy, Technical and Training Specialist at Centurion Safety Products, explains

Rather than the more modern concept of protection from accidental injury, the first forms of helmets were likely developed to protect the wearer in battle. In fact, archaeologists have found evidence of helmets made

id you know that the average spend for a pair of safety boots in the UK is £25-£30, yet for a safety helmet, the average amount paid is between £5 and £8? It’s a statistic that got us thinking: why are we so reluctant to invest in protecting what is arguably the most important organ in the body?

The brain is responsible for controlling and coordinating actions and reactions, it allows us to think and feel, and enables us to have memories and feelings – all the things that make us human – yet the risks posed by head injury are so often overlooked, dismissed, or simply not considered.

That’s why in 2020 Centurion Safety partnered with leading charity, Headway, to launch the first Hard Hat Awareness Week: a week of activity designed to drive awareness of brain injury and Head protection encourage best practice around accounts for only 3% of safety equipment. Following the PPE purchases, yet for success of last year, we’re back over 20% of the injuries again for 2021 with an exciting programme of events running from the 14th to 20th June.

The concept of a hard hat is something that is by no means a modern invention. Way back in 1882, Centurion – then known as The Patent Pulp Manufacturing Co. – developed the earliest version of the modern-day helmet. Initially produced to protect miners, the helmets were made from pulped tree roots which were lacquered to produce a hard, waterproof shell.

Throughout history then, there has been a clear recognition that our most valuable asset to protect is our head, because that is the bit that works everything else. If something happens to that, then there may be serious implications including anything from brain injury to death.

DON’T TAKE THE FALL UK Charity, the No Falls Foundation is dedicated to saving lives by stopping falls

he No Falls Foundation is devoted to preventing falls from height and helping people affected by the lifechanging consequences of a fall.

Supported and championed by the Access Industry Form (AIF), the Foundation has three principal objectives: raising awareness of the risks associated with working at height; researching the causes of falls and providing advice and support to those affected by a fall.

The need for a charity dedicated exclusively to the work at height sector is clear. Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of fatalities in the workplace. In the 12 months to March 2020, 29 people died and there were 5,214 non-fatal falls reported under RIDDOR. 2021 will see the Foundation begin work on creating the No Falls Charter, a document which embodies best practice taken from existing regulations, policies, standards, guidance and a wide range of industry bodies. Intended for adoption and implementation by industry at large, it will enable companies to make a tangible commitment to preventing falls and to make that commitment both transparent and demonstrable.

2021 will also see work proceed on framing a research project to investigate the root causes of falls from height and the changes and advances that need to be made in behavioural psychology to prevent these falls.

Meanwhile, the Foundation continues to advocate its support for a more comprehensive system of recording falls from height – as recommended by the enquiry report of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Working at Height – to better inform policy making and decision making.

Just launched by the charity is a Support and Information Pack signposting those organisations and resources available to provide advice and assistance following a fall from height. The free pack covers a wide range of topics, including: ● What to do immediately; ● What financial assistance may be available; ● How to begin a personal injury claim; ● Support with transport and home adaptations; ● Using the No Falls befriending service; ● Organisations that can help with issues of mental health.

For those who have experienced the loss of a loved one as a result of a fall from height, the pack also provides details of those organisations that can offer help and support.

Comments the charity’s manager, Hannah Williams: “What should have been a perfectly normal day has ended in a potentially life-shattering accident. What do you do now? Who can you turn to?

What help is available? The pack attempts to answer these questions and provides contact details for the Foundation.”

A newly developed digital tool is helping tradespeople to unleash the marketing power of social media. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the developers of the Foreman App ost builders would now recognise the opportunities that social media can bring in promoting their business to a much wider audience. At the same time there is now a plethora of platforms with which to engage. Add to that the time it takes to regularly update a company website, and it can become just another time-consuming task.

Created by Brad Monks and Ian Hannaford as an extension to their existing web design service, the Foreman App has ambitions to liberate more of a tradesman’s precious working hours so they can devote it to showcasing their skills and services through social media.

“We already had a number of tradespeople who were clients of ours and that’s really where the idea came from,” explains Brad. “Through the Foreman App a site-based builder can post on multiple platforms simultaneously without having to log into each individually. If they’ve got a job they’re particularly proud of, or a testimonial from

a satisfied client, that can then immediately be shared across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, saving huge amounts of time in terms of compiling separate posts, and significantly increasing a builder’s engagement with existing and potential clients.”

The Foreman user simply writes the content for the post, takes photos or shoots videos and that is then syndicated across all of the social media sites linked to the app. Where Foreman stands apart from what is already available, however, is that it can at the same time share that content on the tradesman’s website, whilst the user is able to select which individual social media sites they want to post on.

“Every social media provider has different requirements in terms of word count, image number or video content and much of the labour involved in building the app has been dedicated to resolving those issues,” reveals Ian Hannaford, “but the Foreman App enduser is ultimately oblivious to those intricacies. The technology behind it is essentially an API (Application

Programming Interface) and, whilst the back end is a complex beast, and has required huge amounts of hard work on our part, the app has been specifically designed to be as easy to use as possible. Basically, if you can type and take a picture you can use it, and engage with more channels than you did previously in the process.”

“It’s beneficial to the builder, of course, but the social media giants were happy to engage with us because they recognise

that its users will no longer have to prioritise what platforms they use. We’ve started with the big three – Facebook Twitter and Instagram – but have plans to extend to Google My Business, LinkedIn, TikTok and Tumblr, and it’s very straightforward to link those sites to the App. Future updates will also allow other people to create posts on the App as drafts which can then be reviewed and approved.”

The extent to which the Foreman App can transform the marketing output of a small builder is graphically illustrated by the experience of one of Brad and Ian’s early clients. “Matt Dawber of MBD Carpentry is a real craftsman, and some of his work is phenomenal, but he was only posting on social media five or six times a year. Despite being a self-confessed technophobe, he now considers Foreman to be part of his daily routine, and indispensable when he finishes a job.”

It is a view that Matt himself endorses: “I’d post on Facebook sometimes but not very often,” recalls the Sussex-base chippie, “but Foreman made it dead easy. I post almost

every day now and it takes minutes rather than hours. I’ve already had two new jobs come from seeing my posts on Facebook, and we’re averaging two extra enquiries a week, so Foreman has already paid for itself for a few years ahead!”

HD Builders equally found that they were comfortable using the app: “We aren’t great with tech but lots of our business is done from online recommendation so we like the way an app on our phones does everything for us. To be able to take a picture whilst on site, and get it up online in seconds, saves us loads of time.”

Paul Cassidy, Portfolio Development Director from British Gypsum, explains how some plasterboard and plaster products have been developed to reduce pollutants and improve air quality

CLEARING THE AIR he events of the last twelve months have changed many aspects of our lives.

Mandatory mask wearing onsite and in refurb projects is just one example of how we’ve had to adapt our ‘normal’ behaviours. One topic that’s risen to the top of the news agenda is indoor air quality. Not just in terms of improving ventilation to limit transmission of the virus, but how the quality of the air we breathe inside can impact our own, our work colleagues and our family’s health.

That’s where plasterboard and plaster can give a breath of fresh air and offer greater value for homeowners having plastering work done.

According to the World Health Organisation exposure to indoor air pollutants can lead to a wide range of adverse health conditions in children and adults. These can range from respiratory

illnesses, such as asthma, to serious eye problems and more life-threatening cancers and diseases. As large swathes of the population continue to work from home it’s estimated that homeowners in the UK are spending up to 90 per cent of their time indoors – either working, sleeping, or relaxing. However, the true extent of health problems caused by poor indoor air quality isn’t widely understood, and neither is the role that technologies in plasterboard and plaster products have on reducing health risks for the homeowner.

It’s not uncommon, for example, for people to complain about feeling ill or groggy after spending long periods inside. This is often down to airborne pollutants found in the indoor spaces in which we live and work. These pollutants, called VOCs (volatile organic compounds), are naturally emitted by

pets, cleaning products, furniture, carpets and most paints. The most common VOC is formaldehyde, a human carcinogen found in adhesives in wood products such as MDF, carpets, furniture, paints and varnishes and known to cause headaches, nausea and fatigue. It also affects breathing and concentration.

A study conducted for Clean Air Day analysing homes in Birmingham, London and the Home Counties found 45% had levels of VOCs that exceeded healthy levels, with 28% of householders in homes with high VOC readings reporting multiple respiratory difficulties.

Around a fifth of homes in the UK currently have double the safe levels of formaldehydei. With walls and ceilings being the largest exposed surface areas in properties, the choice of plasterboard

and plaster products used can significantly improve the quality of air inside a property.

Activ’Air technology, developed by British Gypsum’s parent company, Saint Gobain, actually absorbs and breaks down formaldehyde, decomposing it into non-harmful inert compounds. The technology is included in a number of our products including Rigidur H fibre plasterboard, Rigitone and GypTone acoustic ceiling boards, which are used predominantly in commercial building projects, and circulation spaces of multioccupancy apartment buildings.

For domestic housebuilding and refurbishment projects, we have developed the ThistlePro PureFinish plaster range that comprises Activ’Air technology. Once applied to a wall or

ceiling the surface can then be painted with a breathable emulsion paint where it will continue to absorb formaldehyde for up to 50 years, even after a number of redecorations.

Although ThistlePro PureFinish is more expensive than standard plaster there are tangible health benefits for the homeowner. Indeed, our feedback from installers and contractors state that customers are more than willing to pay a premium because of the associated longterm health benefits to themselves and their families, which more than outweigh the small cost differential We’ve also received really positive feedback on the quality of these added value, healthier products. For example, feedback from plasterers is that ThistlePro PureFinish plaster is creamier, has a thicker texture and produces less dust when applying to walls and ceilings compared with standard plaster finish. It also gives excellent results on a range of backgrounds, so is ideal for new-build and refurbishment projects where both undercoats and plasterboards need to be covered by the same skim finish.

It’s likely that the issue of indoor air quality, and how to mitigate pollution will remain at the forefront of consumers’ and contractors’ minds over the coming months and years. BACKING A WINNER

When it comes to tiling and wetroom installations the N&C Nicobond catalogue features a product for every conceivable application.

Professional Builder’s Lee Jones discusses some of the options with the company’s Richard Hill.

ith a pedigree that stretches back to 1875, N&C Nicobond has had the time to develop its expertise across a wide portfolio of products in the tiling, flooring, bathroom & healthcare sectors.

Indeed, the company prides itself on offering the trades total system solutions, together with all the technical support they will ever require.

“Essentially, if it’s possible to tile on it, N&C Nicobond will have an answer”, declares company director, Richard Hill.

“Our solutions are all designed to work together, and the floor to ceiling technical substrates, tile backing boards and adhesives that sit behind the finished project – and safeguard its success – are all designed to ensure that a builder won’t be getting a call back.”

Despite being a habitual practice for many years, it is now the case that BS EN standards no longer recommend the use of plywood for walls in wet areas, with floors likely to follow within the current update. In substrate systems with wooden floors, N&C Nicobond now offers a range of options. Its expanded polystyrene, Nicobond Tile Backer Board is reinforced with fibreglass

mesh and a polymer enriched cement layer on either side. It’s rigidly and dimensionally stable and, even if fully immersed in water, won’t expand, contract, delaminate, or warp. That makes it the perfect substrate for wet areas, where there is vertical, and horizontal movement, or on uneven floors, whilst it can be either be mechanically fixed or adhered to the floor to create a level. It’s particularly easy to work with and cut, and the Nicobond Tile Backer Board installation can be continued up the tiled walls, with part cut boards used to create curves and design features.

Reinforcing sheet

“As well as our Backer Board, our patented Plastic Ply product makes us unique as a manufacturer,” enthuses Richard. “It’s a timber floor reinforcing sheet, designed to deal with vertical vibrational movement, and it’s such an easy product to use. If the builder’s confronted with a bathroom with timber floor boards,

the first steps are to screw the boards down to the joists and apply Nicobond PVA and water, which will dry in twenty minutes. The Plastic Ply is a mesh product supplied in 600x500mm, 2mm thick sheets, with a selfadhesive backing. In installation it is as simple as peeling off the back and sticking to the floor in a brick bond pattern. It can be cut with a flooring knife around toilets, for instance, and a Nicobond S1 polymer-rich adhesive can then be applied ready for tiling, or a self-adhesive tanking system if it’s a wet room installation. The averagesized bathroom can be completed by a general builder in just half an hour, and there should be no subsequent issues with deflection, and tile failure.”

Disconnecting sheets

In projects where its lateral movement rather than vertical deflection that’s an issue in a timber floor, builders should choose Nicobond D-MAT 3L. This disconnecting and anti-fracture matting, will accommodate the lateral expansion and contraction inherent in chipboard floors, disconnecting the tiling from the floor below, and preventing floor failure.

“It’s also very good on screeds”, reveals the N&C Nicobond Company Director,

“particularly if there are differences in the co-efficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the substrate and tiles. Similarly, our 1.2mm thick Nicobond Disconnecting Sheet can allow builders to tile on screeds that are cracked but remain stable, whilst this product, or D-MAT 3L, should be specified under any type of natural stone flooring, where the tiles need to be routinely disconnected from the substrate.”

In addition, the Disconnecting Sheet stands apart from its competitors in another crucial respect. BS EN standards also specify that building tile bays should not extend any further than 40m2. Open plan designs in larger properties can, however, easily extend beyond those dimensions, which then require the addition of an unsightly movement joint, but there is a Nicobond answer: “By using our Disconnecting Sheet it’s possible to tile up to 80m2 bay, with a maximum of 10m in one direction. Apply the sheet over the screed floor, allow a 10mm gap around the perimeter, with skirting coming down over the top, and the whole floor can move if required.”

Adhesives

Continuing that theme of single source of supply for the industry, there is a full range of adhesives under the Nicobond banner. Its Rapidflex Adhesive is a dependable material in up to 60 per cent of projects but there are instances where a more specialist product will be required.

Large format tiles are still very much in vogue, for instance, and here Richard would recommend Large Format Flex.

“Today, 60x60cm porcelain tiles are not uncommon, and an adhesive which has been developed for just that job will make an installer’s life so much easier. It’s

a low viscosity, pourable flow bed adhesive that can be easily moved around with a trowel. There’s a 100 per cent wet transfer to the back of the tiles, and that prevents any prospect of cracking at the edges. In addition, our Rapid Tile and Stone Adhesive will lock in the moisture in the mix preventing the water from coming up and staining natural stone tiles.”

Five times faster to install than traditional tiles – and without the need for specialist skills – Scott Beattie, Managing Director at Fibo, provides a step-by-step guide on how to correctly fit its waterproof wall panels orget backer boards, membrane, glue and grouting, wall panels are perfect for both refurbishment and new construction projects as they can be fitted directly to existing walls, including tiles, or onto stud partitioning. The installation process is very straightforward and transforming a bathroom, kitchen or wet room can be completed in just a few hours, depending on the size of the room.

The good news is that panels can be

fitted by anyone with basic carpentry skills, so there’s no need to sub-contract the job to tilers. Fibo’s Aqualock tongueand-groove system means the panels are up to five times quicker to fit than traditional ceramic tiling, with no grouting needed. In addition, wall panels can cover large wall areas quickly, with standard 2,400mm high panels covering the full wall height in most bathrooms, and further options available for rooms with greater ceiling heights, or for kitchen splashbacks.

FOR BEST RESULTS, WE RECOMMEND USING FIBO’S RANGE OF ACCESSORIES TO INSTALL THE PANELS PREPARATION Before installing your panels, check that the walls are completely dry and, if installing over ceramic tiles, ensure that they are degreased. The wall should be able to support a firm screw hold. If the surface is uneven, attach panels to battens using screws and plugs or nails. There also needs to be a vertical batten under every panel joint.

Where heavy items are to be attached to the wall, such as a hung basin or toilet, extra battens must be installed to carry these (whether the substrate is square or uneven). The battens should be placed at 600mm or 900mm vertically, and 800m horizontally.

MEASURING AND CUTTING THE PANELS The panels are easy to cut. Simply measure your walls then measure the panels and choose your cutting method: Jigsaw: You’ll need to use this for irregular widths or to accommodate fittings. Use a firm and stable table or work bench and cut the panel with the decorative side face down.

Handsaw: With the decorative side facing upwards, use a fine-toothed saw. The cut should only be made on the downward stroke.

Openings/holes e.g., for pipes: The hole should have minimum 5mm clearance.

Seal, even if the pipe is to be fitted with a collar. For larger holes, drill first with the largest drill possible before cutting.

SECURING THE PANELS Fix the other side of the panel to the wall or batten by screwing or nailing along the tongue, ensuring it is correctly aligned before securing. Screw/nail the panel into the wall using 1 ½in. No.6 screws or gypsum-board nails, with 200mm space between them. The lowest screw/nail should be max 20mm from the bottom of the panel.

USE A BASE PROFILE IN WET AREAS A base profile must always be used in wet areas, whether a bathroom, shower or wet room. You will need to ensure that the height is adjusted, where the panel meets the ceiling.

FIXING THE PANELS For a whole room installation and for best results, start fixing the panels furthest away from the door. When setting up the first panel, fix an internal corner profile to the wall and Fibo Sealant into both channels. Cut the tongue/groove off the edge being inserted into the profile, then cut to size from the top.

Push the clean-cut panel edge firmly into the profile and fit into place.

If you’re gluing directly to walls, apply Fibo Adhesive to the back of the panel in a zig-zag pattern.

APPLY SEALANT AND CLICK THE PANELS INTO PLACE Apply sealant when the panel is upright against the wall, next to the previously installed panel. Run a bead of sealant along the length of the panel groove and lock the two panels together into position, ensuring they’re aligned.

Use the manufacturer’s Clean spray and Wipes immediately to remove excess sealant.

Working in both directions towards the door, continue along the wall and apply sealant into each join before clicking panels into place with the Aqualock tongue-and-groove system.

FINISHING OFF To complete a full wall, you can either swing the final panel into position with the internal corner profile already attached and fasten to the stud or batten on the return wall.

Alternatively, fit the corner panel first and insert the last panel tongue-first on one side with the lip of the other edge removed to fit flush to the adjoining panel. Fix by gluing the back edge.

If you’re only applying the panels to one section of the wall, swing the final panel into position with the end profile already attached. Ensure that sealant is applied into the profile channel first.

Once installed, the wall panels can massively reduce bacteria build-up and, thanks to a non-porous laminate covering, makes it much easier to clean and maintain. Grime and dirty grout are a thing of the past and, with the manufacturer’s 25-year warranty, you can provide customers with peace of mind, and ensure a high quality and long-lasting surface.

PREPARE TO SUCCEED! Next up in Makita’s Toolbox series, the team open the lid on the products that decorators should always have to hand.

t is the invisible part of the job but, the preparation of surfaces is crucial in achieving the perfect finish for any painting and decorating task. When it comes to plastered walls and ceilings, choose a sander that offers maximum flexibility to cover the entire work area quickly and effortlessly.

A typical working day will often encompass tasks that produce high quantities of dust and it is vital that measures are taken to reduce the operator’s (and customer’s) exposure. As well as wearing the correct PPE, professionals should ensure that dust extraction is used. Always make sure that the dust extractor is suited to the application, material and machine.

For example, when using the DSL800 to sand plasterboard or for general cleaning the VC2012L L Class dust extractor can be used. Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh is on board with Knauf ike a lot of builders work has been packed to the rafters recently, quite literally in the case of a plasterboarding job we’re undertaking on a 6m high pitched roof. With the height, and a huge area, the last thing that was on my mind was plastering, and that, of course, is the benefit of drylining.

I’ve been using Knauf’s Fire Panel Plasterboard Tapered Edge, with the pink colour indicating that this is a Fire Panel.

Other boards are colour-coded too, with the standard board being white, sound board blue and the moisture boards green.

Both Knauf’s Joint Filler Premium and Joint Cement Premium are in powder form, and it’s as simple as adding water and mixing until the consistency is right.

The good thing about the powder form is that you can mix the amount you need as and when you need. I don’t like to see materials go to waste, so this is ideal for me, and there’s a shelf life of 9 months for the filler and 12 months for the Cement.

L

JOINT FORCES When filling the joint, it’s imperative that a tape is used over the joints to prevent cracking, and I used Knauf’s Paper Joint Tape. I suppose you could use a mesh tape but there’s many benefits of using a paper tape. Firstly, it’s cheaper, secondly it has a crease down the middle making it ideal to use on corners and finally, if the joint is over sanded you will hardly notice the paper tape, which would be more visible with a mesh tape. Although I would still recommend repairing any area that has been over sanded.

The paper tape doesn’t have a sticky back to stick it to the joint, so you would need to use Knauf’s Joint Filler Premium or Joint Cement Premium on the board before applying the tape. Although the tape is paper thin it doesn’t seem to tear very easily when running the filler knife down the joint to make sure it sits flat to the surface, which is great.

To prevent any confusion both the Joint Filler Premium and Joint Cement Premium can be used as a bedding coat.

The advantage of using the Joint Filler Premium is that it sets in 90 minutes and, given that it’s a case of not just applying one coat, but two, that is very welcome.

The first finishing coat of Joint Cement Premium should be approximately 10” wide; the second coat 12”, and it’s an easy and satisfying material to apply.

The Joint Cement Premium’s drying time is typically between 12 – 24 hours, but the advantage of using this one is that it enhances workability. So, even if it’s the first time you’ve picked up a spreader, you can take your time and not worry about the filler drying quickly. Another benefit is that it can be machine applied. The machine is called a bazooka which runs along the joints and it holds a substantial amount of Joint Cement. It makes sense if you’re doing large areas day in day out, and it would allow you to fill the joints from ground level, which is perfect for high ceilings. It can then be simply smoothed with a long reach spreader.

I’ve been using Knauf products for many years now and they’re very reliable, whilst the manufacturer’s System Performance Warranty is also reassuring.

TALE OF THE TAPE n recent years the benefits of fibreglass jointing tapes have gained significant traction with the trades, but paper-based products still have a place. Indeed, whatever the project, or type of board a builder might be confronted with, they can be confident that there is a Gyproc solution to hand.

So just what differences are there in application and performance between the options? “Within the tapes range there are two broad categories – fibreglass and paper,” Ted explains, “whilst we also supply a Gyproc Corner Tape in the latter material that features two strips of metal in order to fit either side of a corner.

Generally speaking, fibreglass tends to be plaster orientated, but with reference to plasterboard joints, however, paper remains a popular specification for taping and jointing.”

When it comes to any of the Gyproc self-adhesive fibreglass tapes it’s the fast and straight-forward application process that has made them such a popular proposition. Simply place the product over a joint of no more the 2mm width, cut to length with either a taping knife or the edge of a finishing trowel, and apply Gyproc Joint Filler or Gyproc EasiFill over the top. Once the filler has set, it’s ready for the next coat of jointing material,

which can be applied using either taping knife, trowel, finishing boxes or using an increasingly popular spray-applied finish coat system. The primary purpose of the tape is to give the joint strength, which is why, when taping and jointing by hand, it should always be ‘bedded in’ using a setting compound. The mesh construction of the fibre tape works rather like a traditional timber lath, where the filler is effectively pushed through the gaps to the substrate behind, thereby forming one single, solid, and reliable joint.

Unlike its fibre counterpart, the paperbased Gyproc Joint Tape is not selfadhesive. As a result, a joint filler is first applied over the joint, with the tape then embedded in that material. Using a taping knife or trowel apply pressure when running down the tape to squeeze out any excess material from behind before applying a second coat over the top to a width of approx. 125mm, effectively creating a sandwich construction.

“Gyproc Joint Tape is often still in evidence in larger commercial applications”, continues Ted, “where a large expanse of taping and jointing is undertaken. Although it can also be fixed by hand, in these instances, it is generally applied via an automatic taping tool, where the tape and jointing compound is run onto the boards in one continuous action, with the machine then cutting the tape to the required length. As a result, paper rolls tend to be longer at 180m, compared to 90m for most fibre tapes.”

At the same time, whilst plasterers will make use of metal beads to create a perfect straight edge on external corners, taping and jointing systems often still utilise a paper corner tape. The two corrosion resistant steel strips offer suitable protection for the external corners and, as with Gyproc Joint Tape, it is embedded into the joint filler.

High in fibre

It would be fair to say, however, that the faster application times of hand-applied fibre tapes, particularly on jobs where there’s smaller areas of joint to cover, have won favour with the trades. As a result, Gyproc has utilised its expertise to develop the concept still further with the offer of a full range of products for

specific applications, each of which can be easily identified by their colour, as Ted explains.

“Gyproc FibaTape Classic Drywall Tape is a general-purpose product that’s blue in colour and can be used on either taper edge, for when taping and jointing, or square edge boards when skimming.

Gyproc FibaTape Mold-X is green in colour and has a micro-bacterial coating, which makes it ideal for being specified for use with moisture resistant boards and, as the name suggests, is intended to inhibit mould growth in areas of high moisture.”

“One product where we’re beginning to see increasing levels of interest is in our Gyproc FibaTape Xtreme product,”

enthuses the Artex technical expert.

“Atmospheric conditions can have a part to play in how well a tape will stick, particularly in winter months when the boards are cold. The additional adhesive properties of Xtreme will provide greater peace of mind for tradespeople at either end of the temperature spectrum, providing a reliable joint from 5 up to 30ºC. Once builders get this product in their hands, they realise its value, and we’ve recently launched a wider option with a further benefit. Across the range Gyproc fibreglass tapes are 90m in length and 48mm in width, whilst the latest Xtreme version is 100mm wide and 75mm long. Plasterers are finding a use for the wider product, because it will cover both the fixing that’s been used to attach the plasterboard to the wall, as well as the joint, thereby reducing the risk on joints even further.”

Extended range

Elsewhere in the range, the white in colour, Gyproc FibaTape Perfect Finish Tape is approx. 30 per cent thinner than the other fibre tapes available, and is particularly adept at disguising butt joints in plasterboard. If, for instance, there’s a job where one tapered edge board sits on top of another, and the abutting edges top and bottom will not, therefore, be tapered, the thinner tape means less jointing material to cover, yet still allowing a much smoother finish. “This is a really useful product and, because the mesh is slightly tighter, there’s plenty of glue on the back of it, so it has the added advantage of being a very tacky adhesive solution.”

The advantages of fibre tape in terms of speed and user-friendliness have rapidly converted contractors, and it is a testament to their success that there is now a whole range available. “There was a time when we only produced one type of fibreglass tape,” concludes Ted, “but their popularity, together with the recognition that we need to accommodate different performance parameters, means we can cover just about any job.”

LOFT IN SPACE Chris Ingram, founder of Continal Underfloor Heating, offers some top tips on how underfloor heating can take a loft conversion from good to great.

nderfloor heating (UFH) systems were once confined to new build properties and ground floor renovations, but advances in heating technology mean this is no longer the case. Today, it’s as easy to fit UFH in a loft conversion as it is on any other floor in a property.

UFH also brings with it benefits that traditional radiator systems simply cannot offer – benefits that we believe make it the best heating system to specify for a loft conversion.

Consider, for a second, why someone decides to convert the loft in their home.

Invariably it’s because the family has outgrown the existing home and is in desperate need of more space, wanting either an extra bedroom or bathroom, or both. But going up into the loft is actually a relatively expensive way to create more space in a home. It usually costs more per square metre than putting an extension onto the back of the house, but if there isn’t the space out back to extend into the garden, the loft conversion becomes the best option if the family isn’t looking to move.

Once the decision to convert the loft has been made, it’s vital to maximise every possible inch of space, and that’s where UFH comes in. Wall space in a loft is always at a premium, and so trying to work out the best places to install radiators between the dormer windows, low roof heights and staircases, while still giving yourself enough space for a bed, wardrobes and any other furniture can be a real headache. By specifying UFH instead, builders can maximise the usable space within the loft while also giving the homeowners the sense of warmth and luxury that UFH always provides.

Get the floor height right

Wall space isn’t the only thing that can make the difference between a successful and unsuccessful loft conversion. Ceiling heights are equally important and can often be tricky to get right. The original plans for a loft conversion are often created long before any real thought is given to how the space will be heated, so it’s very important to choose a system that isn’t going to dramatically increase the floor height from what’s shown on the plans. Otherwise, this can cause real problems around the stair area, leaving mismatched heights for the top step compared to the rest of the flooring that could be awkward for the homeowners to traverse, even if the system raises the

floor height by as little as an inch or two.

Luckily, modern, quality UFH systems offer a number of different options to overcome any such floor height issues.

The floor of a loft conversion is usually a suspended timber construction, and so the UFH system installer would typically lay diffuser plates onto the suspended timbers. But as part of the wider loft conversion, a lot of other building structures also need to be run within the floor area. Steel beams are often inserted into the floor to help take the weight of the additional floor, as well as a lot of other metal and timberwork. Consider the electrical systems, wires and drainage/water pipes that also need to be run through the floor, since there’s usually

very little space in what remains of the ceiling above the room.

All of this means the floor is already pretty full of other services, before you start trying to run a pair of UFH pipes between every wooden joist. Our answer to this problem is to instead choose a system such as our OneBoard structural system. Regardless of what heating system you use, every loft conversion needs a layer of composite board or chipboard, which is placed directly onto the joists to act as the structural floor.

OneBoard consists of a composite chipboard panel that forms the structural floor, but which also incorporates SUPERflex-12 pipe embedded within the chipboard, and a heat dissipation foil for excellent heat output and response. The system can be used with any choice of floor covering when a capping of 6mm ply is added, providing a highly efficient UFH system without any significant increase in floor height or weight, and which can run seamlessly beneath carpet, tiles or any other floor covering.

Plan ahead

Loft conversions alone are rarely big enough to require anything more than a one-zone system, even if the area comprises a bedroom and adjacent ensuite bathroom area. The living space might be divided into two rooms, but the en-suite would usually be considered as part of the bedroom when it comes to planning the heating controls, so in almost every situation a single-area control pack is all you will need.

As long as that control unit can be connected to the property’s existing heating, the UFH can be run alongside it with no need for additional manifolds or

actuators. The control unit itself can be placed discreetly out of sight inside the eaves storage that is usually created at the far end of the property, beneath the gable-ended roof. The single-room pump unit and control would usually be stored there as well, so they are always easily accessible for service and repair. The pump unit will be wall-mounted, but we would always recommend that you make sure the pump comes properly sound insulated – ours always are – as they are usually right next to a bedroom.

WINDOW ON THE WORLD When it comes to roof windows there are now a dizzying array of options, but Dakea can be your guide. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones asks the manufacturer’s Andrew Birch what the company is doing to help the trades get product selection and installation right. pecification is, of course, central to the success of any building project but that also means partnering with a company with the product range and support that can satisfy any requirement. “I was recently asked to quote for a customer who wanted to bring more light into quite a dark kitchen space,” explains Dakea Sales Manager, Andrew Birch. “It was quite a large expanse of roof and that, together with the size of the room, should always be your starting point.

Generally, it’s better to have two or three smaller windows rather than one large one, and that’s what we’ve suggested to this particular client. Moreover, any area that will generate condensation, such as a

kitchen, will benefit from a greater overall expanse of roof window because it increases ventilation and, in terms of material, we would invariably recommend PVC in these applications.”

As a general principle, the window area in the room should represent 20 per cent of the floor space and it follows that going beyond that figure will flood the space still further. At the same time, every job needs to be approached on a case-by-case basis, with not just the size and shape, but also the purpose for which the room is intended, what direction the windows are facing and the pitch of the roof all critical considerations – and these are far from the only factors, as Andrew reveals.

“For a tradesman, more than one unit might have increased cost implications but there is also labour to consider. In order to complete the installation safely,

fitting a window of 1.2m2 or more should always be approached as a two-man job, but two or three 780mm or 980mm units can be easily handled by one person, thereby making a saving on manpower.

“The minimum pitch for any roof window is 15 degrees but that angle, and the roof material, will determine the type of flashing specified, for instance, and at the very lowest end you’d be looking to make use of a product that provides the maximum level of protection against wind uplift and water ingress, such as the Dakea Universal Flashing KUF. Similarly, the sound of rain on a window, which will increase at a lower pitch, can be 50 per cent deadened with the sound-attenuating properties of the manufacturer’s triplepaned Ultima Energy.”

satisfied customer but Dakea is also working hard with its trade customers to smooth the fitting. It is recognised as industry best practice to install an additional water barrier in the shape of an RUC Roofing Underfelt Foil Collar, for example, and all of the products that make up the Better and Ultima models are supplied with this one piece, no joint installation accessory that ensures watertightness. Similarly, a pre-cut Insulation Foam Collar saves time and facilitates a better finish.

Paul Trace from Stella Rooflight offers some advice on things to consider when planning a conservation rooflight project.

What material should I choose?

Genuine conservation designs should be manufactured with slim, clean lines and a low-profile to match the roofline. A number of skylight companies try to produce conservation rooflights using modern bulky aluminium profiles, which sit proud of the roofline, particularly slate.

It is widely accepted that most authentic conservation rooflights are manufactured from steel because it provides great strength while offering a slim profile and excellent glass to frame ratios. There are many types of steel conservation rooflights and, for unrivalled protection and lifespan, all Stella rooflights are manufactured from marine grade 316 stainless steel.

Internally Stella rooflights are finished with real wood linings. American ash is the most popular choice, but we can produce these from any timber required.

The use of real wood gives a neat, warm appearance to the internal element of a conservation rooflight. Nowadays most rooflight suppliers tend to use cheaper softwood or plastic, which is painted white as an internal finish, and these liners can result in deeper frame profiles or reduced viewable areas. While a white internal frame can be sold as ‘clean’ or ‘neat’, these can sometimes feel a little soulless, and is a finish more often associated with modern flat rooflights than traditional conservation products.

Single or double glazed?

Victorian rooflights would have been single glazed, However, today’s modern building standards are much higher, and so single glazing does not meet the minimum requirements for thermal efficiency (Part L). Double glazing is now the most popular option for genuine conservation rooflights because glazing technology is such that a modern doubleglazed unit can provide a number of benefits while remaining reasonably slender. The units used in a Stella conservation rooflight offer both self-clean and solar control elements, while also providing excellent thermal efficiency with

an inner pane of Planitherm One. Using warm edge spacer technology, and argon gas, our units are also silicone edge sealed, which gives them greater protection against UV light.

Some conservation rooflight suppliers are keen to boast about offering triple glazing in their products but, while this does offer a slightly improved thermal performance, it comes at the expense of appearance. The optimal spacer bar thickness is 16mm so any decent triple glazed unit is going to be almost 50 per cent thicker than a double glazed version.

Now with a flush fitting profile being one of the main requirements of a

conservation rooflight, the introduction of triple glazing makes that almost impossible on some roof types.

Glazing bars?

It is often a stipulation from the Conservation Officer that a conservation rooflight should have a glazing bar to replicate that original Victorian appearance. If your conservation rooflight does require a glazing bar then it should be a genuine one. This is an area that separates those producing close replicas to the original Victorian rooflights and those who are trying to pass off modern skylights as something more traditional. A genuine glazing bar should be something which not only divides the glazing but also provides additional strength to the casement.

So many conservation rooflights have something simply stuck or glued onto the outside of the glass which neither looks good nor provides any benefit to the rooflight. In addition, these stuck on bars (usually plastic) often attract dirt and mould, and the lifespan of anything which is simply held on by tape or glue is unlikely to compare with a genuine steel glazing bar. A stuck on glazing bar is one step up from a felt pen but certainly should not be seen as a way to make a modern bulky framed profile meet the criteria of a conservation rooflight.

Top hung or centre pivot?

Once again, if you are looking for a close replica of a Victorian rooflight then a top hung profile will be the one you should opt for. Not only does a top hung design offer a more authentic appearance, it maximises the space below because the casement doesn’t stick into the room.

Smaller top hung rooflights also utilise beautiful brass ironmongery to operate the casement, whereas centre pivot designs tend to rely on modern plastic handles, which are out of reach and offer nothing to enhance the internal aesthetics.

building types. If your building is Listed or in a conservation area then the criteria for using conservation rooflights are much stricter and you should always gain approval, not only for their use but also the manufacturer that you would want to use.

Is there anything else I should consider?

With the UK Government pursuing a carbon neutral environment it is imperative that every action is taken to reduce energy consumption. Rooflights are energy efficient as they let in large amounts of natural light thus reducing the need for artificial lighting. Bringing natural daylight into your home is about much more than creating a bright, welcoming environment, it’s about protecting your health and wellbeing and achieving a more positive way of life.

One way to ensure that you maximise the amount of available light is to increase the size of your rooflights… or is it? Just because you have a large rooflight this does not always guarantee lots of light and you should always check what the finished viewable (often referred to as clear viewable) area of the rooflight will be. You might think that a conservation rooflight with a whole frame size of 900mm (w) x 1,200mm (h) would have a similar clear viewable area regardless of the manufacturer, but you would be wrong and bulky framed modern types or the flat rooflights posing as pitched conservation styles will let in considerably less light than a genuine steel framed version.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST Colin Knight, National Sales Manager at Saint-Gobain Abrasives, discusses how tradespeople can find the right tools to ensure a smooth, clean cut every time.

hen working with laminates, one of the biggest issues that tradespeople face is the risk of chipping and damaging the surface – and as this material is often used in areas that are highly visible and used daily, these are mistakes that will certainly not go unnoticed.

The demand for laminates has rocketed over the past year – particularly for Antimicrobial High-Pressure Laminates (HPL), Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and wooden composites for flooring, countertops and wall partitions. With homeowners seeking high-end finishes without the hefty price tag, laminate materials are overtaking their solid wood counterparts – which, although in many cases are easier to clean, maintain and install, are also more at risk of damage during the cutting process.

A high level of finish is expected and required for laminates, often used in some of the most visible and well-used areas of a home. This means any chips, scratches or damages to the surface results in materials being scrapped or

hours of labour time lost on trying to resolve any imperfections. So, how can tradespeople ensure a smooth, quality cut every time? Well, it’s mainly down to the tools used.

Melamine-faced boards, plywood, laminated panels and HPL sheets all require a specific type of saw blade.

Ensuring that the cutting equipment being used is suitable for the application is critical, as saw blades have different shaped, angled teeth for different materials. When shopping for circular blades for laminates, a Triple Chip Grind (TCG) blade is usually a good place to start.

When looking closely at a TCG blade, it’s easy to identify that the teeth aren’t all identical but actually consist of a mix of trapezoid and flat shaped grooves. The first trapezoid tooth makes the initial cut, and removes the majority of the material, while the second, flat shaped tooth widens and cleans the cut for a better finish. Finally, the third trapezoid will clean and finish the cut, and therefore complete the process.

These alternating teeth, and cutting actions, minimise the stress and wear on the blade to ensure durability – particularly when compared to a normal Flat Top Grind (FTG) saw blade.

It’s clear that more and more clients and the industry as a whole are prioritising sustainability in builds. As we look to minimise waste, and incorporate more sustainable approaches on site, reusing and prolonging tools where possible is a great way to reduce the impact on the environment, as well as saving money for trades in the long run too.

A good TCG saw blade will usually have high quality Tungsten Carbide Tips which, with the help of a saw sharpening expert, can be resharpened if there are signs of the tips becoming blunt – ensuring a consistently quality cut, longer product life and cost savings on replacements.

When using jigsaw blades on laminates, it’s vital to ensure that the

blade is capable of providing an extra clean cut, due to the chipping nature of the material.

To do this, check the packaging to see if it clearly states that the blade is suitable for cutting laminate materials, and look for blades made from BIM (bi-metal) with a pointed design to the teeth.

To ensure user safety, it’s important to check the bore of the machinery that will be used, and what diameter of blade will fit. If a blade is too big or too small for the machine, it will interfere with safety guards and actually be dangerous to use.

For those who already have the correct circular saw blade but are hiring machinery for a certain job – if the diameter is suitable but the bore of the machine is different to the blade, reduction rings can be purchased from most merchants to adjust the arbour hole. This will allow users to operate machinery safely, without having to purchase another blade just for one-off, short term use.

For materials such as wood and composites, the question that trades should be asking when looking for the right blade is whether a fast, ripping type cut is required, or rather a cleaner, smoother cut. For laminates, the aim is to always achieve an extra-clean cut, so blades should be designed specifically for this purpose alone.

BEST SUPPORTING ACT W Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to a ‘Prop’ star that’s quite literally going from strength to strength

hilst it might be all smiles to the client, when it comes to propping up walls for extension knock-throughs, or when hiding steel beams in the ceiling, there’s often a certain amount of concealed anxiety. It’s far from an exact science and could well involve some sleeplessness nights. In 2018 we reported on experienced bricklayer, Stephen Cheshire and his Prop Pal invention, the only needle support in the building trade to include a lockable jacking support system, and the concept now benefits from an upgraded design.

Available to hire or buy, Prop Pal has been steadily developing a following since its launch. “We never fail to get positive feedback from the tradespeople who’ve used it,” reveals the Manchesterbased tradesman, “and safety, security and ease of use is what it always comes down to. I’m a builder myself and I know that there’s often reluctance to introduce new ways of working, but it really does offer peace of mind.”

Steve was finding that, in order to create a flush ceiling effect, more of the work he was undertaking involved concealing steel beams in the floor void.

The problem is that the supporting systems used can often be makeshift and, with holes cut through the ceiling or floor to send a prop through and catch a needle, there’s significant disruption to the property. “I literally woke up early one morning with the idea fully formed, and got up to draw it out on paper straight away,” recalls the 60-year-old. “I then made up a prototype in plywood, before having it made in stainless steel. We went through three separate metal versions before I had something I was happy with and then had that proof tested. We then fabricated another model that could take even more weight – and we’re now up to an SWL of 1,500kg. When I first came to use it on site, I had a real smile on my

face, because I know what it would mean to builders. It is purpose-made with proven strength and, because the props are locked into the frame, they won’t be dislodged if knocked.”

The Prop Pal is a safe method for propping the wall above the upstairs floor level in order to leave the ceiling void clear to install the beams. It is the only needle support to include a jacking support system for extra stability, with the adjustable foot allowing the inner and outer leaf wall to be picked up evenly. In addition, because it features a knuckle joint, if the courses are slightly out of level it can be tilted, and the actual foot can be secured to the floor.

“The original Prop Pal was designed for propping above the floor void only, and we did get a lot of enquiries about

making use of another Prop Pal the other end to further support the floor from the underside. We’ve now redesigned the product so that the adjustable foot is removable and added a U-shaped plate.

That means the prop can be slide in, and then secured. As well as that, the current length is 1,200mm, and we are being asked for longer versions, and that’s something we’re looking at.”

“If you add up all the benefits – minimal disturbance, more space to insert steel beams and, of course, the safety element – and the Prop Pal has the potential to become the industry standard for this kind of work”, concludes Steve. “In short, it takes all the stress out of the job and is dead easy to use.”

GLOVE STORY Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh gets a helping hand from Wonder Grip understand it is difficult to wear gloves at all times, especially when the job demands manual dexterity. I can’t emphasize enough, however, the importance of protecting your hands, even if it’s a two-minute task – because without our hands we can’t perform twominute tasks, so make it a habit. I used to think gloves are gloves, but, when my old pair got ruined from sparks while using a grinder to cut metal, I quickly learned there are different types – and qualities.

It has a brushless motor and, to prep the firing mechanism, it uses a cylinder of compressed nitrogen to pressurize, shoot and repressurize over and over without any external air source. The advantages of this, is that there’s no hose and it’s also completely odourless.

It actually fires the nail into the surface within nanoseconds, which is one billionth of a second and, to put that into perspective, one nano-second is to one second as one second is to 31.7 years.

Impressively, it only runs off an 18V 3ah lithium-ion battery, which takes 30mins to charge to 80 per cent and around 1 hour to fully charge. When it is fully charged it can apparently nail up to 600 nails per charge. It does come with a charger that indicates when it is charged, and also if there’s any problems with the battery itself. On that battery it will also tell you how much juice is in the tank. I love that it has this additional feature because you can have a quick look before you’re already at the top of the scaffolding.

For a complex piece of technology operating the machine is so simple. It’s turned on from a button just above the battery which allows you to switch from

sequential mode to bump mode. In the sequential mode it will show a solid green light, and this allows precision nailing, which means you’ll need to press the trigger each time you want to drive a nail into the surface. The bump mode allows you to keep your finger on the trigger and fire nails continuously. This mode is indicated by a flashing green light, and is perfect when you need increased speed, such as when nailing boards, for instance.

It is compatible for nails ranging from 2” to 3 1/2” including smooth shank, ring shank and screw shank, which covers various applications and, as expected, it does have a depth drive dial on the top.

One thing I wasn’t expecting was it to have a nose piece which prevents marring the surface. You don’t usually see this on a 1st Fix Framing Nailer but I think it’s a good idea, especially if you’re working on something that is going to be visible.

The SENCO is also equipped with a multi-purpose light on the tool handle which acts as an instant troubleshooting guide. When it shines a solid green light, it means the tool is energized and ready to fire. A slow fading light means it’s detected an internal high temperature and a flashing red light a fastener jam problem.

The tool is equipped with something called jam reduction intelligence, so it will attempt to recover. If it doesn’t, however, it isn’t complicated to fix. There is an allan key provided on the tool and it’s a case of loosening three bolts to remove the magazine. Once this is off, it will allow you to access and remove any jammed nails with pliers or a screwdriver. Safety precautions, such as removing the battery, must be taken first.

The nailer also has a joist hook which can be adjusted to six positions and is ideal for hanging on rafters and joists whilst working. Finally, it comes in a tool bag instead of a box, which has the advantage of being able to carry a selection of nails in there too.

HOW TO APPLY IT It is important to clean the surface before applying Quick Drying Drive Seal. Use a stiff bristle brush to remove any dust, dirt or moss and then apply Thompson’s Oil and Drive Cleaner to remove stubborn oil, grease and petrol stains. The cleaner can be used neat for tougher stains – or for general cleaning it can be diluted with water (1litre of cleaner should be mixed with 4litres of water). For the best results, leave for five minutes before using a stiff brush to clean the whole area with water.

It is important to let any surface water dry before applying. However, unlike alternative products available on the market, it can be applied onto damp surfaces. This is because of its unique water-based acrylic resin that offers a level of breathability and lets water vapour out, without allowing larger water droplets to seep in, so the surface can continue to dry even after Quick Drying Drive Seal has been applied.

To ensure full coverage, we recommend applying two coats using a roller. Always allow four hours between each coat and, once the second coat has been applied, leave for a further four hours before parking any vehicles on the drive.

The product’s water-based formulation also makes the cleaning process quicker and easier, as tools can be cleaned simply using water and detergent. However, when disposing of leftover product always contact your local authority to find out how waste can be disposed of safely.

It is also important to remember that new tarmac should be left to dry for 90 days before applying Thompson’s Quick Drying Drive Seal. It is also recommended that it is used in dry conditions (and not when it is raining or forecast to rain), to ensure quality end results.

New drivers are waiting up to 18 weeks for a practical test, according to new research from heycar and Honest John Vans.

Apprentices and younger tradespeople are facing an uphill battle to get hold of a driving licence after research revealed that some new drivers will have to wait over four months for a practical driving test.

According to official DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) figures obtained by heycar and Honest John Vans through a Freedom Of Information request, some driving test centres are quoting an 18-week wait for a driving test.

The news will be met with dismay by young tradespeople and apprentices who are hoping to get the keys to their first van in 2021.

The problems have been caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic and lockdowns, with the DVSA cancelling a whopping 241,127 practical tests between April 2020 and March 2021. The pandemic has seen the national average waiting time increase from 9 to 14 weeks. But the national figures only tell half the story, with some areas faring worse than others.

The areas worst affected include Halifax (Maltings), Cheadle, Isle of Scilly, Crieff in Scotland and Llandrindod Wells in Wales.

Bradford (Manningham), Northwich, Isle of Mull and Bristol

(Jubilee House) are among the places where waits stretch to 17 weeks. Learners in Bridgend and Llantrisant face delays of 16 weeks while it is 15 weeks for those in Merthyr Tydfil and Newtown.

However, while the backlog of driving tests has caused waiting times to spiral, the research from heycar and Honest John Vans has also revealed the areas with the shortest waiting times. Carlisle has a fourweek wait while Galashiels in the Scottish borders is quoting five weeks.

Kendal (Oxenholme Road), Boston, Inverness (Seafield Road) and Pembroke Dock are among the towns that boast a six-week delay. While learners need only wait seven weeks in Whitby, King’s Lynn, Dundee, Elgin, Cardigan and Carmarthen.

While those lucky enough to live in or near Carlisle enjoy the shortest wait in the UK of just four weeks, it’s a very different story elsewhere, including Halifax where residents face the longest waits of 18 weeks.

The DVSA says it is putting measures in place to reduce the wait for practical driving tests. These include offering overtime and annual leave buyback to examiners, asking all those qualified to conduct tests, but who do not do so as part of their current day job, to return to conducting tests, and conducting out of hours testing (such as on public holidays).

In addition, the DVSA says it has started a recruitment campaign to increase the number of examiners. Yet, even with all of these measures in place, it could be many months before waiting times return to pre-pandemic levels.

builders’ vehicles s Jesse, one of our favourite characters from the highly amusing Fast Show of a few years back, would have extolled: “this week I have mostly been driving Ivecos.” In fact, we could go even further and say, for us, it was quite literally a Daily occurrence during April, as we took a crash course in what this iconic Italian motoring giant has to offer those at the sharp end of the construction industry.

It began appropriately enough on April 1st and, yes, that fool on the hill was us as we made our way from the Iveco press garage in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, up and over the windswept Downs in the flagship 3.5t panel van. Conceived more than forty years ago, and manufactured in Turin at the foothills of the Alps, the 2.3 litre engine positively purred as we swept past the famous Whipsnade Zoo and we could have sworn that was a roar of approval from the famous White Lion carved into the chalk of the rolling Chiltern Hills.

It’s fair to say that the International Vehicle Corporation has consistently pursued its own automotive agenda and, in a world of big beast collaborations and amalgamations, the fundamental design for a heavy-duty commercial vehicle has remained resolutely independent. In fact, the Daily in all its multitudes of configurations remains the only LCV offering where the chassis is separate from the body, just as in the heavy truck world.

That makes for greater potential payloads, up to six tonnes and above thereby providing an alternative to a seven-tonne truck without any loss of payload.

The clever bit, of course, is combining all that extra carrying capacity with a vehicle that drives and performs like the more familiar 3.5 tonne panel or dropside

vans, which are the backbone of so many small businesses. The range under the Daily badge is certainly extensive, but it clearly doesn’t try and be all things to all workmen. If, for instance, you are looking for the cheapest way to transport tools and materials to site, then probably best to look away now because this will not be the solution for you. It’s always been resolutely a premium product at a premium price but, once experienced, businesses keep signing up for more of the same peace of mind which comes with all that structural strength and toughness.

Driver comfort

What you also get in spades is a level of technology and comfort that betrays that HGV heritage, and which was quite obviously taken to unprecedented levels following the launch of the 2019 version. Outwardly, little changed from a

major refresh a couple of years previously but, in the ensuing years, Iveco doggedly canvased its customer base on what they would like to see included to improve their ‘Daily’ driving experience. Not surprisingly, this centred around three core elements, driver comfort, fuel economy and technology, both in the cab and in safety and driver assistance departments. The “Change Your Business Perspective” which was proudly emblazed on our test vehicle is all about megatrends and buzzwords, such as digitalisation, automation, electrification, and serviceability, but in simple layman’s terms, the object here is to provide a

properly earn its keep with a full payload in this case of up to 1,232kg.

At its core, the most current Daily remains instantly recognisable with a tweak to the front grille, providing improved ventilation and protection whilst accident prone builders will welcome the introduction of a bumper that is divided into three sections, so that in a small bump, only one damaged piece needs to be replaced, reducing repair costs and down time. vehicle which significantly increases the owner’s profitability, which has to be a good thing.

Fundamental to this is the engine, with a choice of four large, Euro 6LD compliant diesel engines, the FIA 2.3-litre option with ratings from 116 to 156hp (our model was rated 136) in both light and heavy-duty homologation and the 3-litre heavy duty FIC engine with increased performance from 160 TO 210hp. All are available with a choice of Hi Matic automatic or six-speed manual gearboxes – more than enough power there to cope with load volumes that start at 7.3m3 and expand to a positively cavernous 19m3 with added fuel savings claimed over previous incarnations.

Some of the finer intricacies of the in-cab technology would trouble an Oxford Don, let alone a humble construction worker – or trade journalist, for that matter – but business operators are empowered with all the necessary data to maximise the efficiency of every journey.

Safety in mind

A range of headline grabbing driver assistance systems are also part of the package, including advanced emergency braking and city Brake PRO, adoptive cruise control with queue, active lane, and crosswind assists. One of the areas which received notable input from the Iveco boffins is the steering system, which has been completely redesigned to provide axial and angular adjustment to set up the optimum driving position. The smaller leather multi-functional steering wheel feels more car like and puts a wide range of controls at your fingertips creating more legroom and adding to overall comfort. Our ride experience certainly benefited from a significant load and this after all is a vehicle which is designed to

The 3.5t version is quite clearly a lot more dough than the average builders’ van but, then again, this is a vehicle which has a well-deserved reputation for delivering the bread on a ‘Daily’ basis.

The standard Daily 100,000-mile, 5year warranty is also amongst the best in class.

ne of the few advantages of falling in to the more mature age bracket (apart from being first in the queue for the Covid Jab, of course) is that those acquiring a car driving licence before 1st Jan 1997 are entitled to drive vehicles up to 7.5tonne under the so called grandfather rights. In actual fact, having youth on your side would probably be preferable, because you certainly need all your wits about you to drive a vehicle of this not inconsiderable bulk around a congested town or city centre. It’s certainly the closest most of us will ever get to feeling like a proper trucker. The surprising thing with the mighty Daily 70C19HA8V, to give its full title, is that if you forget the sheer vastness of the space behind you, it still has the driving position and sizing feel of a van. The only obvious concession is a heavy truck like suspension seat, which rises up and down to absorb bumps in the road, but can leave the uninitiated feeling a bit queasy after negotiating a slalom of speed humps.

The Daily’s chassis like structure allows for some absolutely enormous body variants, especially in terms of length, so if you need maximum space, and some particularly high payload options up to almost 4,000kg on a regular basis, then it’s worth considering. The mind boggles as to the manoeuvrability of such a beast, but it is also very capable of heavy-duty towing usage.

Our heavily laden test vehicle was powered by the FIC 180HP Euro VID engine which needs every bit of its max torque of 44kgm and 9,430Nm @1500rpm and power of 132kW(180hp) @ 3,500rpm but remember that all vehicles of this size are restricted to 56mph, which can be a tad frustrating with an open road and an obvious surplus of on tap testosterone. The rest of the interior spec is pretty much the same as for the 3.5tonne, version so if you think of that vehicle on steroids, you have a pretty good idea of what is in store. As we say this unequalled level of LCV carrying capacity comes at a premium – currently almost £60,000 – including a raft of optional driving aids and gismos, so you would need to have it earning its keep quite literally on a daily basis. Rumour has it that there is an even larger offering at 10tonne, but we are neither old nor brave enough to take to the high road in that particular specimen!

CATCHING THE SUN Stuart Nicholson, roof systems director from Marley, is advising builders not to miss out on solar PV installations.

t the moment, only around 10 per cent of new houses in England include solar photovoltaic panels on the roof. Fast forward to 2025 and we predict that as many as 80 per cent of new builds will feature solar PV as standard.

That’s because the Government’s 2025 Future Homes Standard will require all new homes to be highly energy efficient, with low carbon heating, and be zero carbon ready by 2025. To ensure the industry is prepared for this, new homes will be expected to produce 31 per cent lower carbon emissions from 2022, as part of changes to Part L of the Building Regulations.

This improvement in energy efficiency cannot be made by simple enhancements to the building fabric. At this stage, solar PV on the roof – with an efficient gas boiler – appears to be the easiest and most cost-effective way to meet the new Part L targets, and that means the

potential for builders to add value to projects with solar is huge, whether it be an extension, a roofing replacement or a new build.

Solar PV represents such an important part of the future roofing market, that we have recently acquired Viridian Solar, the manufacturers of the PV panels in our Marley SolarTile. Integrated PV systems are designed so they can be installed by any roofer because they simply replace a section of tiles or slates, acting as a seamless part of the roof design. Arch topped windows are just one of the little styling touches that house builders have added to the homes they’ve built over the years to make them a little more interesting.

But fear of not getting the installation right can often drive builders towards persuading the homeowner to get rid of them rather than preserving the feature.

But they can be remarkably easy and inexpensive to replace.

Arch topped windows are renowned for their aesthetically pleasing appearance – offering a grand look and unique character.

When they first existed, they were difficult to manufacture and install – and only existed in religious buildings and homes of the rich and royalty – and that means arched windows offer a certain element of luxury to houses.

That’s why you will often find them in traditional homes – housebuilders have a long history of nicking the best bits to stylise and sell the properties they build.

Arch topped windows and door frames in PVCu have long been available, of course. But there have been significant advances in recent years to the technology and techniques used to manufacture these

styles in modern materials. In essence they are made using standard PVCu profiles that are quite literally heated so they can be bent into shape.

However, in the earlier days this process – which essentially means distorting a precisely extruded profile into a form it was never intended to be – was quite hit and miss and could end with shapes that were less than perfect and with joints that could be seen to have been forced.

These days the best manufacturers are equipped with kit designed for the task that allows the process to be precisely controlled. At Quickslide we invested in automated state-of-the-art equipment that uses a cooler working temperature and multiple 3D cameras – which means that the profiles retain their structural integrity – to give consistently perfect results.

For replacements in more normal homes, even in quite average semis, they can, of course, cause a slight headache. But arch tops really should not cause any more grief than measuring and fitting more normal styles.

Measuring arches is simple. At Quickslide we require very little from our customers: If the arched opening is a true arch in a new build, we may not require a template as the curve will be even across both sides.

However, for any bespoke or unique arches, we will require a template to ensure your new window will fit into the opening. We are used to working with all sorts of templates – paper, cardboard, wood. You name it, we’ve received it. And we have produced some cracking results with them too!

With these measurements we can calculate and manufacture your arched window or door.

And you can take on any installation job that you might encounter and even write bolder designs into a job spec to give you an extra edge over less imaginative competitors!

Surely this is the modern world gone mad. Placing a slice of cucumber and a sprig of parsley on top of a bit of bread and cheese – can that really be described as artistic design?

But it got me thinking about how we builders describe ourselves. The dictionary definition of an artist is someone who uses their hands and minds to create new things. And as builders we do that most of the time. We are creative people.

When we’re not demolishing old stuff and chucking it in skips, that is.

In my experience, however, builders tend to be quite selfeffacing, and rarely brag about their abilities. How many times have you heard a carpenter describe himself as a “wood butcher”, for example? Or a plasterer say that he’s a “muck chucker”?

But good carpenters can produce woodwork to equal the accuracy and beauty of the finest sculptures. And plasterers can turn the roughest old house wall into a dead-flat finish to rival the perfection of the Sistine Chapel.

As a brickie myself, I wouldn’t claim to have been the best, although some clients and passers-by have occasionally kindly complimented my work by telling me I’m a true artist. But I have worked with others who I

thought really were artistic.

I once worked with a stone cladder, for example, who would spend his lunchtimes making birdbaths and other garden ornaments out of sandstone offcuts. I was amazed at his skill, but he would have none of it.

Anyone can do it, once you’ve been shown how, he would say.

And let’s not forget the building services guys. When a plumber describes himself as a spanner monkey, he’s deliberately talking himself down. Pipe bending and pipefitting are skills that evolved from blacksmithing, and that is one of most artistic trades in the history of civilization.

So maybe we builders should learn to walk a bit taller and take due credit for our skills which – let’s face it – we have spent many years learning and practicing. We can do things with wood and metal and bricks and plaster that the average person cannot do. That’s why they have to call us in and pay us for what we are good at.

If people putting bits of food between two slices of bread are artists, then the blokes who construct and maintain the buildings in which they do it, most certainly are.

This is a condition many people have never heard of, and some may be completely unaware they have it. NAFLD is often, but not exclusively, related to being overweight or obese. In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 3 of us will have early NAFLD. NAFLD is a liver disease related to a build-up of fat within the liver. A normal, healthy liver should contain little or no fat. Along with so many other conditions we have covered, the health of your liver is closely linked with your overall health. Having high levels of fat in the liver is linked with diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. If you have diabetes and NAFLD, your chances of developing heart disease also increase. This is why, once again, early recognition of this condition is important as we can stop it getting worse and manage it at an early stage.

A small proportion of people with early NAFLD will go on to develop the more serious stages of NASH, fibrosis and cirrhosis. This may happen over a number of years.
