New avenues The aftermarket has often been disregarded as an old-fashioned and stale sector that refuses to move with the times. When compared to the rest of the automotive industry, a relative lack of infrastructure and investment would, on the surface, paint a negative picture of our industry, but this doesn’t tell the whole story.

Yes, life in the aftermarket may not be as flashy as it is in, for example, the R&D facilities of vehicle manufacturers, but there are plenty of ambitious and modern-minded individuals and businesses within it that want to push it forward. Industry bodies are constantly trying to maintain a level playing field against franchised dealers, with the IAAF’s consistent lobbying on the subject of block exemption regulation testament to this.

Aftermarket businesses go to great lengths to stay at the forefront of the relevant technological developments that affect their field; new products are regularly being made available and new facilities seem to be opening all the time.

So, despite humble appearances, the aftermarket does have the framework to prosper. This month’s issue of PMF sheds a light on how the businesses that exist within the industry have been attempting to push beyond their limits and grow. For example, a Special Report on page 27 takes a look at Mannol UK’s brand new distribution centre. With the company’s previous warehouse no longer big enough to fulfil its orders, it sought out a newer, larger facility in an area that would enable it to service its growing customer base. Here, Mannol displayed the nous and decisiveness that is required to flourish; it wasn’t afraid to leave its comfort zone.

This ‘out with the old, in with the new’ attitude is also on show in regard to new products. In this issue’s Batteries feature, Banner introduced its 50Ah Running Bull AGM battery (page 34).

With many questioning what lies ahead for lead-acid batteries in the automotive sphere, Banner has stood firm and argued that the battery type certainly has a future within the aftermarket. The company quoted from Ricardo Strategic Consulting’s ‘Automotive Battery Technology Trends Review’ that “Lead-acid batteries are the only technology capable of fulfilling all the major 12V requirements, from start-stop functions to reliable auxiliary batteries.” It is this belief that has driven Banner’s strategy to develop the next generation of start-stop lead-acid batteries.

Aftermarket ambition isn’t just measured by new premises or products, it can also be represented by clever initiatives, such as investment in software. This is examined on page 15, as Capricorn Car Parts reflected on its decision to utilise MAM’s Autocat program to help with its distribution of Facet products. Director Richard Walkden pinpointed the company’s hope that the incremental improvements made by using Autocat would boost orders and enquiries for the Facet range, and eventually lead to greater recognition from buying groups.

For now, initial customer feedback has been positive, so Capricorn seems to have taken a step in the right direction.

With the right application, the entire aftermarket can move forward in this way. Whilst the industry may not have the same infrastructure as other parts of the sector, its will to develop, as has been demonstrated throughout this issue, can only stand it in good stead going forward.

Alliance Automotive Group UK (AAG), a subsidiary of Genuine Parts Company (GPC), has acquired J&S Automotive Distributors (J&S).

The acquired business, which includes its subsidiary Auto Components Northern Ireland, trades from three distribution centres in Dublin, Cork and Omagh, with annual sales of approximately €35m.

For AAG, the transaction represents the first step in building a distribution infrastructure in the Irish market to match that of its UK infrastructure.

Block exemption update With the block exemption regulation deadline getting closer, the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) provides an update on the current predicament.

The consultation by the EU into Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (MV-BER) began in 2019 and has been ‘backwards'looking in examining the effectiveness of the legislation. The forward-looking consultation that goes deeper into the maintaining and possible modernising of MV-BER starts later this year. IAAF, through FIGIEFA, has been extremely active at putting forward the perspective of the independent automotive aftermarket.

The current EU MV-BER still applies in the UK until 2023, but after that, it will be up to UK Government bodies to come up with their own legislation, if they wish to do so. Whilst the UK Government is expected to adopt a modernised BER in line with the EU, the IAAF has formed UK AFCAR to lobby the Government.

If BER were not to be renewed in the UK, then using parts of OE quality or matching quality within the warranty period could invalidate the vehicle warranty. However, neither the UK Government nor the EU can force independent repairers to use only Original Equipment Supplier (OES) parts.

For many years, the EU has been very pro-SME and pro-choice, and the IAAF has heard favourable noises from within the commission supporting its stance. It now seeks to ensure the same happens within the UK Government.

BM Catalysts celebrates 20 years of Reed Mill facility UK manufacturer and exporter of catalytic converters, DPFs and front pipes, BM Catalysts, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of its Reed Mill manufacturing facility.

In 2001, BM Catalysts purchased the 83,000ft² premises to expand its production and develop its processes. Reed Mill is one of two sites owned by BM Catalysts, and is home to almost 200 staff members, along with key business functions, including product development, CNC tube cutting, bending, final assembly, warehousing, dispatch, and head office teams.

At Reed Mill, BM Catalysts took delivery of its first high-tech CNC machinery shortly

after purchasing the premises, which allowed for precision engineering and large-scale production. This gave the company the platform to significantly increase output and improve product quality, which in turn helped BM Catalysts to establish its reputation for high-quality standards that is synonymous with the company today.

Commercial Director at BM Catalysts, Mark Blinston, commented, “The investment in Reed Mill was very significant, and a bit of a gamble really. But it certainly paid off! It meant we

Through its Hella Gutmann Solutions brand, Hella has partnered with Pro-Align.

The purpose of the partnership is to provide the market with the ultimate solution for wheel alignment and ADAS camera and radar calibration.

“With the inexorable rise in the number of ADAS-equipped vehicles entering the workshop, ensuring these systems are correctly calibrated will, for the foreseeable future, become one of the core principles that every independent will have to put into practice,” explained Neil Hilton, Head of Workshop Equipment at Hella.

“However, performing calibration successfully relies upon the vehicle having the correct alignment of all four of its wheels, as this is the mechanical baseline to ensure the vehicle’s steering geometry is true.

“It is therefore logical that the leader in ADAS calibration equipment for the aftermarket should team up with the primary specialist in wheel alignment to ensure the calibration procedure is completed successfully, to enable these safety critical systems to perform with complete accuracy, and to make sure that drivers, and other road users, are protected.

NEWS Ben’s Big Breakfast fundraiser to launch in October Automotive industry charity Ben has announced the launch of its first ever Big Breakfast fundraiser in October.

The event runs for a week, starting on 4th October and ending on World Mental Health Day, 10th October.

Ben is encouraging automotive people to set themselves up with the most important meal of the day and get together with others over a cuppa and breakfast butty. As World Mental Health Day is the finale of the weeklong event, the focus is also on opening up, talking about mental health, connecting with others and sharing experiences.

With the factor having fallen foul of being able to mark its 30th anniversary this time last year due to COVID, Banner’s Business Development Manager Russell Shea was adamant the event wouldn’t be overlooked. So, 12 months on, he made a surprise visit to mark the occasion and did so by presenting Wheels’ founder Mayoor Patel with an overdue but tasty celebration cake.

Mayoor had this to say: “The pandemic obviously took the gloss off being able to acknowledge and rejoice 30 years in business last year, so for Russ to remember 12 months on is really quite touching.

Indeed, it is partnering with the likes of Banner and the team that attracted me to setting up a motor factor business 30 years ago. It was a huge and risky step at the time, as it involved investing the family’s entire savings, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The last 30 years have really flown by, and the automotive aftermarket is an interesting and ever-changing sector to operate in.

Russell added, “I had planned to mark Mayoor’s 30th anniversary last year and was determined not to let it slip by unnoticed.

It’s fair to say that we enjoy a fair ‘slice’ of business with them, so a celebratory cake seemed an appropriate way to mark what Mayoor and his team have achieved over a whopping 30 years.

Partbusters donates £1,500 to Great Ormond Street Hospital UK automotive parts distributor Partbusters has made a generous donation to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, raising approximately £1,500 for the charity.

The figure included £600 from takings from the company’s coffee machine, which was then doubled by Ricky Bassi, Partbusters’ Director and Founder, before other members of the Partbusters team rallied round to raise a fantastic £1,500 for the charity.

Ricky commented, “Great Ormond Street Hospital is a fantastic cause and one close to our hearts at Partbusters. We’d like to thank everyone who has bought into this initiative and we will continue to raise as much as we can for the hospital.”

PMF introduces this month’s movers and shakers as they begin a new stage of their career in the UK aftermarket.

Dayco

Kevin Lee has been recruited to Dayco’s UK sales team. On the appointment, the company’s National Sales Manager Steve Carolan had this to say: “Doncaster born and bred, Kevin is a familiar face in the industry having been with a number of aftermarket businesses over the last 20 years. This experience, along with his friendly and enthusiastic nature, makes Kevin a great addition to the Dayco team.”

Kevin added, “Although I started in the dealer sector as a salesman for BMW, Mercedes and VW, for the last 20 years, the aftermarket has been my life blood, and many of the customers I’ve come to know over that period have now become friends.

“I’m delighted to join the Dayco team and to help these same customers and friends learn more about the high quality products we have in the range.”

Morris Lubricants

Morris Lubricants has added to its experienced sales team by appointing Addison Howe as its new Field Sales Manager.

With a proven and impressive track record of mentoring sales teams, Addison also has 16 years of oil, lubricant and grease industry experience to call upon. His focus will be to coach the team of Area Sales Managers so that they can deliver exceptional customer service to Morris’ customers.

Addison claims that the company’s “absolute and no compromise attitude towards product quality” has always appealed to him. He added: “This is reinforced by its close ties with the UKLA and the VLS. Morris Lubricants is highly regarded in the marketplace and is focused on doing the right thing.”

Critical to Addison’s success will be maintaining good relationships with the Morris Lubricants client base. He commented, “We want to understand a customer’s requirement and their business needs at an in-depth level so we can help them. Schaeff ler

The role of Schaeffler's Automotive Aftermarket Sales in Central Europe, Middle East, and Africa will be undertaken by Martin Klein. The 56-year-old business economist has assumed the newly created position and is responsible for a total of 44 countries. He will also take over the tasks of Stefan Knaack, Vice President Global Key Account Management Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket, who has been responsible for the Western Europe region.

"The structure of the automotive aftermarket will change over the next five to 10 years. The aftermarket ecosystem is evolving rapidly. It is therefore even more important for us to position ourselves in a future-oriented way in order to secure our leading position in the aftermarket," commented Michael Soeding, CEO Automotive Aftermarket at Schaeffler.

Sascha Lechner, President Automotive Aftermarket EMEA, added, "With Martin Klein, we have gained an internationally experienced and customeroriented sales manager who will lead our business in Central Europe, Middle East and Africa in an even more focused and efficient way.”

Unlocking new opportunities Ravi Kotecha, Autowave’s Director, explains why the time is right for motor factors to invest in automotive key programming. ey programming was once seen as a taboo subject for garages, technicians and motor factors.

Recently, however, there has been a change of scene, with a large uptake in these services across the automechanical sector, which, naturally, creates an exceptional opportunity for motor factors that has, up until now, remained largely unexplored.

There are two avenues that any motor factor could take. One is stocking spare keys, remotes and transponders in the same way they would brake pads or hoses.

By doing this, they can be the local hub for their garage customers for a same-day service, something which can be very hard to come by. This will increase their footfall, as customers that may previously have used other outlets for parts will shift their business to accommodate their key programming aspects.

A second option is to be the autolocksmithing contact for their local garages, as well as the general public. These factors will be able to provide a key programming and cutting service, and become a hub for auto-locksmithing work. One such customer of ours, Moffats Motor Accessories in Lancashire, has reported that it is immensely pleased with its decision to use Autowave to introduce it to the world of key programming. With a relatively small outlay, the factor has seen large profit margins and a great return on investment, all without

disturbing the flow of a very busy auto shop.

Within weeks of the initial purchase, and with no prior experience, it has already recouped a large portion of its costs and has seen an increase in sales of non-locksmithing items as a result of the increased customer base.

Many key programming jobs take a mere 15 to 20 minutes to complete, which enables factors to schedule plenty of jobs into their working day!

New portal simplifies returns process The new warranty and returns process, brought to market by Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) and PACT – a sales and marketing initiative from Fourth and TecAlliance – is successfully reducing the number of returned goods. PMF finds out more.

With the significant effort involved in the returns process by all sectors of the supply chain, such as logistics, handling, storage and associated costs, the new standardised, largely automated portal for managing warranties and returns makes it easy and offers the recipient complete control and traceability of the process.

Using QR codes, claims can have images and videos added using any smartphone device. These images can often provide the supplier with enough information to ensure a claim can be processed without having to physically return the goods. The resulting time

saving improves the service experience throughout the supply chain and has benefits for the environment, as the unnecessary return transport of damaged goods is no longer required.

Mark Rudge, PACT director, said, “The traditional returns process has hampered the automotive industry’s progress for many years, and so we’re delighted to be able to bring to market a solution that will assist businesses on a daily basis. The rate of returns, among distributors in particular, is too high, and so this new portal effectively manages the process, removing hassle for all involved.”

Traditionally, the process for submitting warranty and returns claims has been time consuming, inefficient and costly, but now, the new standardised warranty and returns portal, accessed through www.rdr.link/FB003, ensures accuracy and compliance of the entire process.

Reigniting an old flame

apricorn Car Parts is an automotive parts distributor based in Birmingham.

The company’s primary brands are Facet Srl – for ignition, engine management and cooling parts – and Borg Warner – for fan drives, blades, and assemblies.

Distribution for Facet began in 2000, and from the offset, we quickly realised that as Facet produced more technologically-based parts, we faced the grey area of competitor product interchanges coupled with very specific vehicle enquiries from our customers.

In response, Facet in Italy got its data on Tec-Doc and from a web-based application guide. From this point, we were left looking at the MAM system as a purely UK-based online data provider. As the company already served both factors and the large

buying groups, we deemed it as essential to get on board, and so we paid for our Facet data to go live around 2010.

By late 2017, we were advised that our data on MAM was being phased out to comply with the software company’s new ‘makes and models’ indexing. Why then, in 2021, are we going live with MAM? Well, COVID-19 aside, there was a shift in Facet’s position regarding support, and the pros simply outweighed the cons. Nigel Clemett at Autocat helped us every step of the way, and we eventually agreed to his proposal.

Trade Shows and specific advertising will always have their place in our industry, but both are hard to appraise in terms of ROI, so we reviewed a market with ever more complex parts being produced and a prevalence of increasingly influential buying groups, and concluded the best way to combat both would be to re-look at MAM. With buying groups only able to offer tenders every two to four years, we questioned how a specialist supplier could get their data and new products in front of their members and then the branch managers and decision makers. For us, the only option was to choose Autocat.

C

atalytic converters (CATs) are a critical part of the exhaust system, providing emissions control and ensuring legislative compliance. Like any car component though, the demands of the road can mean that periodic replacement is required. The issue for stockists and distributors is that CATs are bulky and expensive to stock on-site, and there are literally 1,000s of part numbers. Thankfully, Klarius Products seems to have it covered.

Keeping up

More recently, the company has introduced a new range of oil feed pipes as part of its one-stop-shop turbo solution. Responsible for supplying oil to the turbocharger, feed pipes have become a must replace part in any turbo job, and therefore, a must have item for any factor’s shelves.

Whilst oil has always been critical, with modern turbos spinning over 300,000 revs per minute – fast enough to whip the air through the intake at near-Mach 1 speeds – and enduring temperatures close to 1,000°C, the demands placed on these parts are now even greater. In these conditions, even the smallest particles of dirt, soot, fuel, water or other combustion

residuals can contaminate the oil and build up in the pipe, restricting its supply and eventually starving the turbo of any lubricant. This can lead to premature wear, damage and ultimately complete failure, all of which can happen in just a few seconds.

In fact, running a turbo without oil for only five seconds is said to be as harmful, if not more, as running an engine without oil for five minutes, making a consistent flow of clean oil to the turbo an absolute must.

This is why it’s now advisable to fit a new feed pipe when replacing or reinstalling a turbo. Whilst it may add a few pounds to the bill, it is much more cost-effective than having to fit a whole new turbo, saving both your customer and their customers valuable time and money in the long run.

Offering insight into the buying behaviour of trade customers, PMF casts an eye over sister publication Professional Motor Mechanic’s September issue to explore the products, services and industry news that have been the talk of the trade.

PMM’s September issue kicked off with Ingenia Recruitment’s insight on the ongoing skills shortage within the automotive industry. Noting that workshops are currently at a “critical stage”, the company acknowledged that the demand for technicians has never been higher – 65.4% of Ingenia’s vacancies are for technicians. One factor in this situation is the long term neglect of recruiting apprentices, as well as the recruitment of lower skilled staff. It is hoped that these individuals can develop their skills to a satisfactory level, but they tend to eventually move on after being unable to do so.

Ingenia’s Director Steve Shaw admitted that although recruiting apprenticeships is “the right thing to do”, it will take these apprentices some time to reach the level of the technicians that are leaving the industry. He also suggested “Recruiting and training semi-skilled people”, although “they need a lot of training, mentoring, support and patience; things that we generally tend not to be very good at”.

Witham Motorsport, exclusive distributor of Motul products, was up next. Running a limited series of articles within PMM, the September issue’s article focused on handling lubricants in the workshop. Technicians must be aware that if oil hasn’t been changed to OEM requirements, the overall engine’s lifetime duration will be dramatically reduced. Witham recommended that technicians use lubricants that comply with OEM standards, that they change oil before winterising for seasonally used vehicles, and that top-up oil is sold actively. The company then went on to point out certain things that technicians should be aware of when assessing an oil change, such as checking if the oil level is too high because of leaking or damaged injectors, or too many incomplete DPF regenerations. It also suggested that one of the best ways to ensure a clean and easy lubricant change is to make sure that the workshop has the appropriate equipment and tools for an oil change.

In the Engines & Turbos feature, Melett highlighted the need for technicians to opt for quality over cost when repairing or replacing a faulty turbo charger. With the automotive turbocharger market estimated to grow by 10.5% over the next five years, the company is imploring technicians to choose their turbo repair partners carefully. To compound the problems caused by poor fitment of turbochargers, the industry is experiencing an influx of low cost, low quality parts. These products perform significantly lower and are less durable than high quality turbochargers.

Premature turbocharger failure will occur if these poor quality parts aren’t capable of performing under the extreme operating conditions of modern engines, and this can lead to an increase in warranty returns, additional rectification work, and a loss of customer confidence in repairs. Therefore, Melett emphasised that the aftermarket considered the real cost of using low quality repair parts, and seeks to supply the industry with the highest quality parts and service.

Next up, Ken Clark, Managing Director of Rotronics, discussed the importance of testing and charging vehicle batteries in the Batteries & Ignition feature. In a recent Rotronics webinar, 63% of the participants said that they test every vehicle that comes into their workshop, but only 31% could claim to charge every vehicle. Ken admitted that he had hoped for the testing figure to be higher, because technicians that test and charge every vehicle reap far higher efficiency rewards and return on investment than those who do not. He also said that the low charging figure of 31% shows that there are far too many vehicles that are not charged to the optimum level. Without testing and charging, a large percentage of battery defects will be missed, and this is likely to result in higher battery replacement budgets. The webinar also revealed that 76% of the participants rarely or never have their battery management equipment serviced, repaired or calibrated, whilst only 18% claimed to have annual servicing, and a mere 6% adhered to the requirements set out on the equipment guarantee.

According to Ken, this tells us that many workshops are using equipment that may not be fit for service or providing accurate results.

Managing Risk Although the risk of electric shocks with electric and hybrid vehicles is extremely low owing to the extensive safety protocols within the vehicle, it is common sense to apply the following advice from the government website: ■ Do a visual risk assessment for damage to the vehicle during your pre-checks – this should include the battery, charging plug, cables, and other visible high voltage components ■ Assume that the high-voltage battery and

associated components are energised and have sufficient charge ■ Do not interfere with the high-voltage system – you do not need to dismantle anything when carrying out an MOT test ■ Abandon the test if any orange cables or components are damaged or the wires are exposed – these could be a potential shock hazard ■ You do not need to vent any batteries when carrying out an MOT test – this can pose a risk in a confined environment

A note about Hydrogen Hydrogen fuel cell technology commonly uses high voltage systems. Oxygen and hydrogen are fed into the cell and under the action of catalysts, water (in the form of super-heated steam) and electricity are produced to provide energy to drive wheels through electric motors. This technology works extremely well for public transport solutions, including some buses currently running in London. The number of models available for private transport is low. For testing purposes, the same guidance applies as for high voltage systems and there is no reason to interfere with the fuel cells. On presentation, check the latest government advice regarding testing, carefully read any testing advice within the portal, ask the presenter and check manufacturer’s data.

The Life and Times of Lubricants In this limited series of articles, Witham Motorsport, exclusive distributor of Motul products, tracks the journey of the humble lubricant. Each issue of PMM will focus on a different stage.

This month we look at how technicians should best handle lubricants in the workshop. ● What are some tell-tale signs the oil hasn’t been changed in a while?

If the oil hasn’t been changed according to the OEM requirements and adapted to the operating conditions, the lubricant will be contaminated with solid impurities i.e. soot, dust, metal wear, which will cause sludge, heavy wear and tear on all engine components such as main bearings and turbo charger bearings. This will dramatically reduce the overall engine lifetime duration. ● What are some good tips when it comes to using lubricants? ● Use lubricants which comply with OEM

In the same feature, Denso detailed how using modern spark plugs is crucial in the fight against emissions. With older vehicles not designed to adhere to current emissions regulations, enhanced replacement parts, such as advanced spark plugs, can help to bridge the gap between the original and current regulations, and allow the engine to run more efficiently and deliver improved performance. Spark plugs transfer ignition energy into the combustion chamber and create a spark between the ground and centre electrode, igniting the air/fuel mixture. They operate within a volatile atmosphere with high fluctuating temperatures. Therefore, spark plugs are one of the key ignition components in petrol, compressed natural gas and liquid petroleum gas engines, determining exactly how much fuel gets burned in the combustion cycle. Over time, spark plug electrodes wear, increasing the ignition voltage required for them to work properly, and so workshops are advised to fit spark plugs that match OE quality and, when servicing an older vehicle, opt for a version incorporating newer technology than the OE part.

With increased oil temperature the viscosity is reduced. This has impact on time needed for the oil change procedure and how much used oil quantity will be drained. ● If the engine runs under heavy operating

conditions, it will cause additional deposits in the lubrication circuit. The use of a cleaning additive like Motul Engine Clean before an oil change allows you to remove dirt with the oil change from the entire lubrication circuit. ● Use the right oil quantity. If there is

too much engine oil in the lubrication circuit it will damage seals and the exhaust gas after treatment system e.g. lambda probe, catalytic converter and particulate filter.

BELT IT OUT Dayco talks about the latest developments in belt technology and offers its advice on how best to handle replacements. s an established power transmission system expert, Dayco is a preferred partner for many vehicle manufacturers and its expertise has enabled it to develop highly efficient solutions for their many and varied needs, particularly as they endeavour to meet the emissions targets demanded by governments around the world.

Among these many product developments, and one that will be very familiar to technicians in workshops across the country, is the Dayco High Tenacity (HT) or ‘white’ belt, which, with its PTFE film on its inner teeth and fibreglass core, has become the mainstay timing belt for many engine variants used for multiple applications by numerous vehicle manufacturers.

Just as the constant evolution of engine design led to the development of new materials that are able to guarantee higher

performance levels, like those used in the manufacture of Dayco HT belts, further advances have raised the bar still higher.

Dayco HK belts, originally designed for the requirements of specific Peugeot/Citroën applications, encompass the highest level of technological development and feature a tooth lining fabric and weave that incorporates aramid fibres. This combination achieves extremely high wear performance and greater adaptability to tooth geometry, which makes them particularly effective for high-stress transmission systems.

Other notable solutions include the belt-inoil (BIO), a technology that Dayco originally developed to drive the high pressure fuel injection pump for Ford’s 1.8-litre ‘Lynx’ engine, and which has subsequently been used in several other applications, but where space is of particular concern, the company has produced a double-sided timing belt.

Dayco PV Belt

Another development is the Dayco belt-start generator (BSG) 48 V, a stop/start hybrid engine system designed to enable torque to be transmitted in different directions. The BSG is an unorthodox alternator system that, as well as charging the battery when needed, provides engine starting and braking energy regeneration through the alternator, via the auxiliary belt.

The Dayco Poly-V belt for this system, which has a white, high-strength fabric coating the rib side, is particularly durable and designed to operate in winter temperatures of minus 40°C and then be subjected up to 90°C within the engine department.

Check & Change Unlike the previous generation neoprene rubber based auxiliary belt, the EPDM formulated belt used nowadays, wears very

differently. So whereas during use, the previous technology would gradually lead the belt to perish by cracking or chunking – when a section of belt actually comes off – the current EPDM technology belt wears gradually, not unlike the wear to a tyre, which actually makes it more difficult to detect.

As a result, technicians should use the vehicle’s mileage as their first point of reference, which means that if the vehicle has covered 60,000 miles or more, the belt should be thoroughly inspected and if it shows any sign of damage or wear, should automatically be replaced.

To help technicians correctly assess the condition of the auxiliary belt, Dayco has designed the aWEARness gauge, which provides them with three ways to check whether the belt needs to be replaced or is okay to be reinstalled. The two most relevant to an EPDM belt are the wear indicator bar, which highlights material loss and the profile indicator, which reveals whether the belt retains its correct form. Both reflect the level of wear and if the belt fails either check, it must be replaced.

Wear on the belt could also indicate wear to the other components in the auxiliary drive system, which is why technicians also need to thoroughly assess the condition of these associated parts. Particular attention should be paid to the tensioner, because, in common with the timing drive system, the wrong tension on the belt can exacerbate wear and contribute to the potential failure of the drive system.

As a further step to help technicians check the condition of the auxiliary belt, while stocks last, Dayco is offering workshops a free aWEARness gauge, which they can get by simply contacting their Dayco stockist and requesting one of the useful tools.

■ Disconnect the battery ■ If needed, remove the spark plugs ■ Only rotate the engine in its normal operating direction ■ Ensure that replacement belts are treated with respect and not handled with greasy hands, crimped or otherwise damaged before installation ■ When fitting a replacement water pump, sealing compound should only be used when the gasket is not included, otherwise just wet the mating surfaces and the supplied gasket with coolant ■ As Dayco kits contain all the components that manufacturers state must be changed in accordance with the specific service procedure, technicians must fit all the components supplied in the relevant Dayco timing or auxiliary belt kit, during the replacement process ■ Specific torque sequences and values must be followed In short, the basic principle for technicians is to simply follow the original manufacturer’s instructions, without adding ‘just in case’ additions like lots of sealer or thread adhesive etc. In other words, don’t improvise and fit it the way they think is best, just follow the directive, which is best.

Finally, Gemco argued the case for garages purchasing lifts in order to meet the MOT rush. As a result of the MOT exemption, the entire aftermarket supply chain suffered. The smart way mart charge – or intelligent charge – alternators have been available in the automotive aftermarket for some time.

However, the complexity of their design has evolved over time. Consequently, rotating electrics remanufacturer, Autoelectro, has invested heavily in the latest test equipment, to ensure it stays ahead of the technological curve and offer the latest applications to the marketplace as quickly as possible.

Vehicle manufacturers, under pressure from governments and environmental policies, have had to find ways to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency, according to Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick Hood.

He believes the introduction of engine control units (ECUs) has allowed for closer interaction between the different vehicle components: “Sensors can now constantly monitor the performance of all the critical areas of the vehicles, such as air flow, engine speed, manifold pressure, fuel burn performance, temperature and voltage. All of this information is collated by the ECU to maximise the performance of the vehicle and reduce emissions.”

Smart charge alternators can usually be identified from their regulator plug type – LIN, BSS or COM, for example.

Essentially, a smart charge alternator is controlled externally by the ECU, with information communicated between the two via a cable.

The output of these alternators can vary, depending on the information sent to the ECU

Autoelectro provides a look at smart charge alternators. from the various sensors: the condition of charge of the battery, demands from the vehicle’s electronic parts and accessories, such as heated screens/seats and infotainment systems. The benefit of the smart charge system is it can output a lower voltage over a longer period, thus reducing the drag upon the engine, leading to improved fuel efficiency.

A battery accepts charge more efficiently when it is cold. For this reason, a smart charge alternator will charge at a higher rate to maximise the performance and bring the battery back to optimal operating level. Once this level is achieved, the ECU will reduce the alternator output to supply the vehicle’s demands.

It should be noted that the battery charge light affiliated with smart charge alternators is no longer actuated by the alternator itself – but via the ECU. The battery charge limit can illuminate for various reasons, and the vehicle should always be checked for underlying faults before condemning the alternator.

Nick provided an example of this scenario: “This is common on three-pin regulator Ford type alternators fitted to Fiesta, Focus, Kuga and other similar models (AEK2815). A common fault exists on the vehicle’s wiring loom, which is around 40cm long, in that it has been found that corrosion can occur and can interfere with the connection between the alternator and ECU. “This can lead to the battery charge light

illuminating and possibly low or no output from the alternator. Removing the three-pin plug from the back of the alternator will slip the affected part into ‘limp’ mode and should produce between 13.4 and 13.8V, which signifies that the alternator is functioning correctly, and the problem lies elsewhere in the circuit. A vehicle should never be run for a long period of time with the ECU communication cable unplugged.”

Autoelectro’s website allows visitors to check if an individual application has a smart charge and contains information on the plug regulator and pin functions.

Tips for diagnosing a smart charge alternator When testing a smart charge alternator, the communication between the alternator and ECU is in a ‘wave’ and requires a suitable device to read the pattern, such as an oscilloscope. Technicians should use the VM’s guidelines for assessing wave patterns.

The signal from the ECU to the alternator should be a square wave pattern that will change with load request; if there is no change in the pattern, it is likely there is an ECU communication fault.

The signal from the alternator should remain a constant square wave pattern; if this pattern mirrors the signal from the ECU, the issue may lie with the smart charge alternator.

Dealing with E10 With E10 now the standard petrol sold at petrol pumps, there’s much confusion about what this means for the UK car parc. Dan Morgan, Sales and Operations Director for Lucas Oil Products UK, is on-hand to explain.

T

he Government’s awareness campaign advised that any car built before 2011 might experience problems once the new E10 petrol standard was introduced, which it will be in Great Britain this month, and in Northern Ireland early next year. Some motor factors and garages have ignored the issue so far because the E5 option continues to be available. Similarly, many consumers expect that only classic cars will be at risk.

The realities of the story are more complex.

Early estimates suggest that the switchover to E10 will make a significant difference to air quality across the UK. The move is likely to remove about 750,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, which is essentially the equivalent of taking 350,000 of the most polluting cars off the road.

A downside is the potential for damage to internal combustion engines (ICE) fitted to many of the cars still on the road. Lucas Oil already offers a quick-fix solution. The company’s Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner with Stabilizers was developed to provide protection for US cars when that market adopted higher ethanol levels in 2014.

What problems does it cause?

Ethanol is hygroscopic; it ‘pulls’ water from air. When enough water contaminates the petrol, phase separation occurs. Two distinct layers form in the tank. On top is petrol, while underneath it is an ethanol/water mix. It’s this layer that promotes metal corrosion to exhausts and injectors, as well as causing other internal running problems.

High sulphates and copper contents promote gum and carbon deposits on injectors. The ethanol dries out unprotected rubber in certain types of hoses that may swell and rupture from the inside. Seals and other plastics are also likely to be adversely affected. E10 is a less stable fuel that inhibits ignition in cars that are infrequently driven and those that make large numbers of short journeys.

Factors can get ahead of the game by informing their garage customers how to prevent these problems. Lucas Oil’s best advice is to: ●

Add smaller amounts of fuel to the tank to discourage phase separation Make more frequent oil changes Consolidate small trips into fewer longer journeys Use an E10 additive such as Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner with Stabilizers to protect engines and components

Meanwhile, garages need to be monitoring air intakes and EGR systems for increased deposits. They must also be proactive by providing advice about preventive maintenance and the use of additives. This is particularly important in areas where fuel stations have just one petrol fuel pump, as supplies will be difficult to access. So, although E5 fuels (95 Octane) will still be available, they will only be supplied by fuel stations with more than one fuel pump. Moreover, it’s likely that in future, such fuels will be sold at a premium rate.

For now, Lucas Oil recommends that the owners of all cars equipped with an ICE should use additives to protect their investments. The company says that it’s not yet clear which models and which components are already E10 proof.

Furthermore, there will be concerns about the quality of any replacement hoses that may have been used in any fuel system repairs.

This means that the fuel additive route is the best way forward. Lucas Oil’s own product has a long track record of success and some high profile users. According to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, for

example, its vast and valuable collection of vintage cars is well protected: “If the National Motor Museum uses any vehicle that runs on normal petrol, we ensure that we add Lucas Ethanol Fuel Conditioner on every occasion.” The museum added that its tours have recently been reintroduced and, as a result, requests for information about how to protect older cars against the potential threats from ethanol have risen significantly.

In addition to the threats posed to car engines, Lucas Oil has identified potential E10 issues for petrol engines in other markets. These include motorcycles, leisure craft, such as ATVs and boats, as well as equipment used in the garden machinery sector.

There seems little doubt that while E10 fuels pose problems for many cars in the UK car parc, there are significant revenue opportunities for motor factors that are able to supply the appropriate additive protection to retailers and garage proprietors. Are you one of them?

A grand expansion Following Mannol UK’s recent expansion of its distribution centre, PMF takes a deeper look into the new facility. s is the case with many fast-growing companies, a decision needs to be taken on whether or not to take the next step. Mannol UK, a supplier of lubricants and parts to the aftermarket, was established in 2013 and, having experienced rapid growth, found that the time was right to expand its distribution centre.

The previous warehouse covered 28,000ft². Although fairly large, the company’s leadership deemed this to be too small for its growing popularity amongst technicians. With the expansion of Mannol’s network of clients across the country, the company was distributing more orders, rendering the former warehouse capacity insufficient.

The new expanded logistics facility – based in Northampton – covers 65,000ft² and currently has the capacity to hold in excess of £3million in stock. On top of this, the company can increase this even further – up to five times as much if required.

In terms of location, operating out of Northampton enables Mannol to be at the heart of the UK’s motorway network. This perfectly suits the company’s needs, as it

PMF was in attendance at Motul’s stand at The Classic, which took place at Silverstone. n a miserable and wet British summer’s day, PMF took the trip to Silverstone Circuit. Invited by the representatives of Motul, the team first took the opportunity to walk around the famous venue before attending the lubricants formulator’s unveiling event.

Despite the dreary weather, the public turned out in their droves. This passion for motorsport throughout what was merely a day filled with qualification races was certainly impressive. The technician’s centre would whet the appetite of any automotive enthusiast, with the classic vehicles that were being prepared for the track going through their paces in the garage.

Whilst we were on our way to the event, we came to realise how strong Motul’s commitment was to its partnership with the retro racing festival. We came across a Motul mobile laboratory, which was suitably housed in a classic bus. The lab was available to be used as a service for participants at The Classic throughout the weekend, carrying out lubricant analysis

and offering help or advice on lubricantrelated matters. On top of this, Motul provided competitors with a free top-up service for lubricants, coolants and essential vehicle fluids.

As we turned up at Motul’s main stand, the company launched two products for classic vehicles – classic eighties 10w-40 and classic nineties 10w-30. These ‘Youngtimer’ engine oils are suitable for cars that date back to the 80s and 90s.

Also on display was the presentation of the prototype Motul-Edition GBS Zero sportscar. The sports car, built by hand, has a distinctly classic look to it and features a host of Motul-specific features. It sported the livery that won the nationwide design competition, and Motul hopes that this design will make the vehicle instantly noticeable wherever it goes.

The main event

From our point of view, the most exciting part of the day – yes, even more exciting than the racing – was the unveiling of

Motul’s BioClean, its sustainable parts cleaning system for workshops, garages and industrial plants.

Despite cleaning parts being an inevitable and vitally important part of the service and repair process in automotive workshops, it is usually done using harmful cold cleaners and solvents. Motul’s BioClean system is regarded by the French company as a sustainable alternative to standard cold cleaning technology.

Traditional cleaning systems employ fluids that pose a danger to people because they are harmful substances, unpleasant odour-producing solvents, are a hazard to the environment, bring with them the danger of fire, and risk damaging surfaces. They also require high energy consumption, and incur expensive downstream disposal costs, together with all of the hassle of managing the waste they produce.

Motul BioClean is an all-in-one, efficient, environmentally-friendly parts cleaning system that consists of a wash stand and a

water-based cleaning fluid that gets its cleaning power from natural biomicroorganisms.

A longstanding issue CTEK’s Training Manager Tony Zeal sheds some light on the toll that lockdown restrictions are still taking on car batteries. ith many people continuing to work from home and travelling less despite lockdown restrictions being lifted, there continues to be significant reports of flat car battery cases. This presents factors with the opportunity to help workshops protect against battery failure during service or repair, whilst raising awareness to their customers about the importance of regular battery maintenance to prevent vehicle breakdown and extend battery life by up to three times.

Help workshops be prepared

Pre-lockdown, CTEK research identified that as many as 50% of vehicles entering the workshop had a battery that either needed recharging or replacing. We anticipate this figure is now considerably higher. This is a

threat that could cause workshops problems when carrying out work on their customers’ vehicles. So, whether a workshop is repairing a vehicle, testing electrical circuits, carrying out diagnostic procedures, flash programming ECUs, or programming vehicle keys, workshops need to ensure they use battery support.

Keeping vehicles on the road

Utilising battery chargers can help save drivers time, battery costs, towing costs, repair costs, and the environment, through regular battery maintenance. ● Regular charging: A battery should be kept above 12.4V to prevent

desulphation, which is the biggest battery killer. It should be charged at least once a month to extend battery life by up to three times.

Long term storage: If a vehicle is parked next to a power supply, it is worth connecting a smart battery charger to the battery. A smart charger can be attached for months at a time; there is no risk of overcharging or undercharging. The smart charger will keep the battery in peak physical condition, ensuring the vehicle is always ready to go.

Temperature aware: Battery performance can be reduced by as much as 35% when temperatures hit freezing, and by as much as half when the temperatures go even lower. Conversely, heat is also a common killer of car batteries. Motorists should be extra cautious in extreme temperatures, being sensitive to any vehicle changes, such as the way their car starts, or the operation of the electrical system in general. Any changes can indicate a weak battery or problems in the electrical system.

Start smart: If the battery is drained, some motorists seek to solve the issue by using jumper leads, push-starting a manual car and going for a drive, or leaving the car idling. However, this won’t fully recharge a car’s battery, and could in fact create long-term damage. The most reliable way to restore the battery is to use a charger or adaptive booster.

First time’s the charm Varta is on-hand to dispel the myths behind selecting the right battery for the right vehicle. nowing which battery to recommend to a customer has become a daunting task. There are now multiple lead-acid technologies, vehicles with more than one battery on board, and of course the added complexity of what happens when a hybrid or full electric vehicle turns up at a workshop.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to know what type of battery is needed for each different vehicle type; what if it has a startstop system or a micro hybrid system? The days of just offering a 063 as a one-size-fitsall solution are behind us. The question is, though, are factor staff getting the support they need to accurately recommend the right battery to a workshop first time?

Start-stop

Nowadays, there are several types of leadacid battery technology. Not only are there conventional ‘flooded’ lead-acid batteries which have traditionally been used as the starter battery (often referred to as ‘SLI’ for Starting Lighting Ignition), but there are also two newer lead-acid types – Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB). The type of vehicle and the amount of electrical power needed to supply the starting functions and electrical

consumers is what determines whether an AGM, EFB or conventional battery will be required. If the vehicle has a start-stop system on board – and over 95% of new vehicles do – it will need either an AGM or EFB so it can cope with the vastly increased number of starting cycles. Rather than cranking the engine just once per

journey, the battery supports multiple startstops. This happens every time the vehicle comes to a stop in traffic or at junctions, meaning a more robust battery is required.

When replacing an old battery, it is important to replace like-for-like or like-forbetter technologies, and not to fit a conventional battery to a vehicle with a

start-stop system (the vehicle won’t function properly for very long). Fitting the correct battery technology type first time will keep customers happy and on the road, and help workshops avoid costly repeat repair work.

Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, a car with start-stop will have either an AGM or EFB, so be sure to check the correct type is sent to the workshop.

Auxiliary power

Some vehicles with an internal-combustion engine now have two batteries: a regular 12V starter battery and an auxiliary battery.

This is known as a ‘dual-battery system’.

More than 10% of the car parc with startstop technology is already equipped with dual-battery systems in order to meet the increased power demands. This percentage is expected to grow even further with the ever-growing number of electrical consumers in start-stop cars. Auxiliary batteries are designed to support back-up applications. Popular vehicle models, such as the BMW 5 series, Volvo V40 / V60, and many Mercedes models, are all equipped with an auxiliary battery. Depending on the make and model of the car, auxiliary batteries service different functions. These include: the increase of the start-stop function’s duration, support of comfort functions during engine start, support and protection of electrical systems (i.e. brakeby-wire), and emergency systems support.

So it may be worth checking, when a battery is being ordered, is this the main starter battery, or the auxiliary battery that needs replacement? They are not normally

the same battery, so be sure to check which battery on board the vehicle needs sending to the workshop.

EV and hybrid

There is a misconception that electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles don’t require a lead-acid battery, but have you ever wondered what happens when the lithiumion battery stops working? If you look under the bonnet, you will find your answer.

Alongside the high voltage lithium-ion traction battery, you will likely find a second one: a 12V battery acting as a second power source to ensure the uninterrupted function of safety critical systems, in case of a traction battery failure, but also for key off-loads like the central locking system.

Lead-acid AGM and EFB batteries have proven their reliability for years, making them the perfect companion in supporting the 12V electrical system of electric or hybrid electric vehicles.

Lithium-ion batteries are considered the successor for lead-acid technology when it comes to the drivetrain of electric or hybrid electric vehicles. However, they are not as inherently robust as other rechargeable technologies and require continuous monitoring. Lithium-ion cells need protection from deep discharge and being overcharged. Additionally, they need to have the voltage maintained within safe limits, making a special protection circuitry mandatory. A further aspect of the protection circuitry is that the cell temperature needs to be monitored to detect and avoid critical malfunctions.

This is where already proven solutions like AGM and EFB play to their strengths.

They step in when the high voltage battery fails or switches off, to lock and unlock the car, and also serve as an additional power supply to buffer the electrical system. They ensure that important safety functions such as ABS and ESP are working at all times.

AGM and EFB batteries are far from being obsolete. Their construction and behaviour, as well as their lack of electronics, make them a reliable and robust power source.

As the number of electric and hybrid vehicles continues to grow each year, the replacement of the lead-acid battery on board these vehicles will also increase.

A positive landscape Banner’s CTO Thomas Bawart looks ahead at the future prospects of traditional lead-acid batteries in the automotive industry.

Given the rapid emergence of lithium-ion batteries within the automotive sector following the development of hybrid and electric vehicles, it begs the question: is there a future for traditional lead-acid batteries and, if so, how is this likely to shape up?

Looking at the evidence currently available, the landscape actually looks very bright indeed. Newly-elected Chairman of the Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) Dr. Christian Rosenkranz, for example, outlines a positive future for lead batteries. Indeed, he predicts a highgrowth performance for lead-acid batteries over the coming years and sees it as a technology necessary for a decarbonised future.

He stated: “Lead batteries will deliver a low carbon future, with market analysts Avicenne Energy predicting the lead battery market to increase by 61,000 MWh between 2025 and 2030.”

Such confidence in the demand for lead-acid batteries also emanates from a recent study commissioned by a consortium of industry associations. Written

by Ricardo Strategic Consulting and entitled ‘Automotive Battery Technology Trends Review’, the study’s executive summary concluded: “Lead-acid batteries are the only technology capable of fulfilling all the major 12V requirements, from startstop functions to reliable auxiliary batteries.

No other alternative technology can achieve this functionality at this time.”

It will come as little surprise, therefore, that prominent original equipment battery manufacturers such as Banner have signalled their intention to develop the next

generation of traditional start-stop leadacid batteries. These companies are hopeful that their batteries will deliver further refinements in relation to charging and power output through the deployment of optimised cell design and other technology-driven design improvements.

Thomas Bawart, CTO at Banner, commented, “Combinations of 12V leadacid starter batteries and lithium-ion-based, high-voltage drive batteries are standard to the latest hybrid and electric vehicles, and this will remain the case in the coming years. The main advantage lead-acid batteries bring to the fore, however, particularly in relation to today’s modern and highly efficient absorbent glass mat

(AGM) and enhanced flooded batteries (EFB), is their sustainability.

Taking a load off GYS’s Neil Pulsford explains the latest developments in battery support units. ar makers first started using battery support units in the mid-to-late noughties. The first units were low powered, perhaps 25A, and had little or no functionality; you switched it on or you switched it off.

The requirements for battery support are now widely understood. Technicians are aware of the electronic loading that a vehicle can place on the battery when the vehicle is in a ‘key on, engine off’ condition. With a vehicle drawing 20A, or

40A, or even 100A, a typical 60 or 70Ah battery will be unable to sustain that demand for more than a few minutes before the voltage drops, with the result being the electronic control system in the vehicle starting to run into difficulties.

Whilst we know the products as battery support units, they are really ‘voltage stabilisation units’. During diagnostic or programming work on a vehicle, the critical element is that the voltage operating in the vehicle is at both a sufficient level – typically 13.5V, or even up to 14.8V on some vehicles – and that the voltage is constant and stable. Due to the power consumed by the vehicle, the battery cannot sustain the electronic system for long, so the battery support unit takes over. It performs two functions for battery support, maintaining the voltage at the set level and instantaneously providing current to the vehicle to match the current draw at that moment.

Without even considering alternatively fuelled vehicles, the increase in complexity of the electronic systems on ICE cars over the last 10 years has been transformational. This has resulted in car makers specifying ever more output capability to support vehicles during programming, with 100A, or even 120A, being typical

nowadays. Considering that to charge a battery typically around 7A is what is needed, we can see that 100A is at another level.

Though GYS is now the largest manufacturer of battery support units, much of the functionality expansion of the product comes from the car makers.

Consequently, last year, the company launched the GYSFlash 121 CNT – CNT denoting ‘connected’ – which not only raised the output to 120A, but opened up comprehensive connectivity to the product.

With new development having been developed, these units now offer future upgradeability and the ability to record the charge data.

As well as increasing energy demands for the vehicle, the occasions when battery support is essential are also expanding.

Originally for basic diagnostic and programming tasks, including service resets and electronic hand brake adjustment, we now see windscreen replacement needing programming and battery support. The proliferation of ADAS and its maintenance now requires the windscreen and bodyshop sector to be as engaged to the mechanical sector as to the battery support requirements.

When motorists repeatedly drive through potholes, suspension componentry can bend, snap, sever or deform. The continual wear and tear of these components can lead to complete part failure.

The extent of the damage depends on

the depth of the pothole, the speed that the vehicle hits the pothole, the load on the wheel, and the pressure in the tyre (as different pressures will absorb forces differently). The exact moment of damage occurs when the initial force of driving into the pothole travels from the tyres into the suspension componentry. In modern cars, elastic suspension articulation points will enable a rearward motion of the wheel relative to the car body, which will lessen the harshness of the impact.

Nevertheless, a pothole will often jar the steering system, causing a misalignment to the wheels. Similarly, if the steering isn't as responsive as it used to be, or if the car pulls to one side or another, the roads have already done their damage.

A Spanish touch PMF reports on KYB’s shock absorber manufacturing facility in Spain.

YB Advanced Manufacturing Spain (KAMS) is at the forefront of specialist high technology shock absorber manufacturing, and was built specifically for that purpose.

Based in Los Arcos, near Pamplona, and with investment of over €20m, KAMS was approved in June 2008, and the first production line testing began in August 2009. Full production commenced four months later, with the first OE project between KYB and BMW — the supply of front and rear shock absorbers for the new 5 Series. A few months later, supply for PSA and Audi was transferred from KYB’s other Spanish factory, KYBSE. The facility boasts six production lines, and its production capacity is currently 1.45 million shock absorbers. KAMS has 184 employees, 145 of which are based on the production lines.

When you enter the production area at KAMS, the first thing you notice is how clean it is in comparison with a regular manufacturing area. The team works hard to maintain optimum conditions for this

level of specialist manufacturing, including continuous audits over the processes and the products, plus high level cleaning audits every two weeks.

The manufacturing process is highly automated – operators start the process by adding the raw components, and they are not touched again until they are manually removed from the end of the production line. The quality check of the final product is a fully manual process.

The two main types of shock absorber manufactured by KAMS are the REAS and the IDC. REAS is a damper system that controls vertical vibration and damping force on cornering without electronic devices. It links shock absorbers by a special third shock, which has a floating piston and distributes a damping force on the left or right shock absorber.

There are two configurations for this system: Parallel Connection, where the left and right shock absorbers of one axle (front and/or rear) are connected through a central valve; and Diagonal Connection,

where the right front shock is connected through a central valve unit with the left rear shock, as well as the left front shock with the right rear shock through the second central unit.

The system controls the behaviour of the car during braking, cornering and acceleration to manage weight transfer and minimise body roll. It improves contact between the tyres and the road through balanced tyre forces, as well as improving tyre wear and handling, and providing better driving safety in critical situations.

It is used on Audi RS 6 Avant, Audi RS 5 Coupé and Sportback, and Audi RS 4 Avant vehicles under the name DRC – Dynamic Ride Control. Each set of REAS shock absorbers is connected to the central valve unit, ensuring optimum operation and precision for these high performance vehicles.

KYB’s Intelligent Damping Control (IDC) suspension system is the latest innovative technology developed by KYB and is used on a selection of prestige vehicles. In Europe, it is used by PSA on the Peugeot

508 and on the DS7 under the name DS Active Scan Suspension. It will also feature on the new DS9. In Japan, it is available on the Lexus LS and LC, and Toyota Crown and Avalon.

This smart technology analyses the road profile and sends it to the IDC electronic central unit. It works with four height sensors and three accelerometers to measure the vehicle’s reactions, including speed, braking and steering angle, among others.

The control unit continuously calculates the optimum shock absorber settings to mitigate any irregularity, improving comfort to create a unique and smooth driving experience. It does this via a proportional solenoid valve on each damper, which adjusts the inner pressure between the upper and lower chambers, giving individual control of both the compression and rebound on all four wheels.

Testing shows that the benefits are especially noticeable in the rear seats, with the scanning system reducing the oscillation which can occur over bumps.

This may sound like mere improvements in driving comfort, but it will also have a positive effect on safety. Smoother driving means all four wheels will maintain a better contact with the road, allowing for safer steering and braking. A smoother ride will also reduce driver fatigue.

KYB has three shock absorber factories in Europe; two in Spain and one in Czech Republic, where it also has one purposebuilt coil spring factory.

The KAMS factory currently supplies 15% of the top 200 shock absorber part numbers sold to the UK aftermarket, covering Audi, BMW, Ford, Peugeot, Skoda, Vauxhall and VW applications. Automotive pump manufacturer Airtex has added six new references to its range.

There have been two new references for water pumps introduced: 2090, which is for a range of BMW applications, and 2124 for an array of Mazdas.

The company has also expanded its water pump kit offering with WPK-199808, which will fit Audi, Seat, Škoda and Volkswagen models, WPK-182701 for the Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily, WPK-167303, covering Citroën, Ford and Peugeot models, and finally, WPK-189101 for Citroën, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar, Lancia, Land Rover, Mitsubishi and Peugeot applications.

To improve its product and application information, Dayco has released the latest update to its mobile app. Version 7.0 of the app contains technical information and details about Dayco replacement parts for passenger car, light and heavy trucks, buses, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, powersports, agricultural equipment, and off-highway applications, and is now available in the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).

The app, which allows customers anywhere in the world to search more than 40,000 Dayco SKUs, includes features such as make and model search, interchanges, technical information, installation instructions, and product spec data, as well as graphic design enhancements. In addition, it also provides direct links to Dayco social media pages.

Version 7.0 has also been updated with a new design to make it easier than ever for users to access product information and the most relevant vehicle data, such as pictures, routings and layouts, technical instructions, videos, and it allows users to save their own searches and filter products by categories.

TRACK ROD ADJUSTING WRENCH

Laser Tools’ latest track rod adjusting wrench is designed along the traditional pipewrench style, but with added features to make a comfortable and efficient method of removing and adjusting track rods and track rod ends.

The 18" (457mm) rubber-gripped handle gives great leverage, and the quick-fit, spring-loaded jaws help prevent slippage and damage. The jaws adjust between 10-35mm, which will fit the track rods of most cars and light commercial vehicles.

British aftermarket brand Comline has pledged to grow its steering and suspension portfolio by more than a third throughout 2021, and continues its drive towards its goal with a burst of part numbers carefully chosen and developed to suit British and Irish markets.

In July, Comline introduced control arms for the Audi A3 (2003-2013) and TT (2008-2014), SEAT Altea (2004-2009) and Altea XL (2006-2009), Škoda Octavia (20082013) and Superb (2009-2010), Volkswagen Caddy (2008-2015), Eos (2009-2015), Golf (2009-2012), Golf Plus (2009-2013), Jetta (2008-2010), Scirocco (2009-2017), and Touran (2009-2010).

In terms of stabiliser links, Comline now offers an option for the Chevrolet Trax (2012-onwards), Opel Mokka (2013-onwards) and Mokka X (2012-onwards), as well as the Vauxhall Mokka X (2012-onwards).

It also provides a suspension bush for a Škoda Superb (20092015) and Yeti (2009-2017), and Volkswagen Caddy (2004-2015) and Jetta (2010-onwards), in addition to a tie rod end for a Hyundai i10 (2013-onwards).

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AND CONNECTING PIPES

BM Catalysts has extended its range with six additional products, including four catalytic converters and two new connecting pipes.

CLEANER AND DEGREASER

Henkel has released a sustainable, eco-friendly cleaner and degreaser, LOCTITE SF 7840. The product is water-based, solvent-free, non-toxic and non-flammable, and can be used to soak, pressure wash, spray or wipe.

Supplied as a concentrate, this biodegradable product is diluted with water in accordance with the substance being removed and type of surface being cleaned. It can be used for heavy cleaning and degreasing of engines, motors, castings and dip tanks, as well as less demanding tasks such as cleaning concrete floors, work areas, windows, walls, furniture and counter tops.

LOCTITE SF 7840 is available in 5L and 20L pack sizes, as well as in a 750ml spray bottle.
