Taking responsibility As the decision-maker of a motor factor, responsible for the day-to-day running of it, you have to juggle many things to ensure it runs smoothly, turn a profit and keep your staff happy.

After a long day, perhaps you like to kick back with a binge of your favourite TV series, pop on your running shoes and head out for a 10km jaunt, or treat your nearest and dearest to a lavish meal out.

Either way, balancing both work and home life can throw curveballs. In charge of a business means that it might be difficult, nigh-on impossible, to switch off. You may always be on-call. Perhaps that comes with the territory of being someone the buck stops with.

For me, since originally leaving Professional Motor Factor back in 2016, both professionally and personally, life has changed: I now run a PR agency, which now includes the editor’s role of this title, and I am responsible for ensuring my business allows me to put a roof over the heads of my wife and children – perhaps you can empathise with that level of responsibility?

The job of Professional Motor Factor is to make your professional life that little bit easier and help with that responsibility; its role is to provide you with stories and advice from industry professionals that allow you to make better decisions, generate greater revenue streams and run an even better motor factor.

From sharing the latest trends and products, to business tips and case studies from other motor factors across the country, I will endeavour to carry on my predecessor’s excellent work and produce a title that you’ll want to receive every month.

In this month, for instance, Lucas Oil has produced a fantastic, well put-together article, in which it analyses whether motor factors are missing a trick when it comes to E10 petrol (page 32). Despite a 400% increase in sales of its Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner with Stabilizers, Dan Morgan revealed that a lot of distributors are still asking if they can make money out of additives – unequivocally, he said, the answer is “yes!”

He added: “We’ve been telling motor factors that selling our additive to workshop customers is a new revenue opportunity. It protects their customers’ cars against E10 problems in the future, and that it can also work out cheaper to do this than to remain on E05 fuels, which are currently being sold at premium rates.”

Flicking through other stories this month, you’ll notice invitations to send your thoughts and tales. I want to generate more engagement among readers and share their feelings on aftermarket talking points, and I hope you’ll be one of those that gets in touch.

As the year edges closer to the trap door, my aim is to end 2021 on a high, and share the content that matters to you. Enjoy the issue and have a great month.

NEWS SMMT welcomes ‘additional targeted funding for electric vehicles’ The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has responded to the government’s Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener report, in which it pledged further funding of £620 million for zero emission vehicle (EV) grants and infrastructure.

In the same report, the government revealed it will allocate a further £350 million to support the electrification of UK vehicles and their supply chains, and it will introduce a zero-emission vehicle mandate, setting targets for a percentage of vehicle manufacturers’ new car and van sales to be zero-emission each year by 2024.

The policies are part of the government’s determination to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

At the time of writing, these announcements come before global leaders meet in Glasgow to discuss and negotiate further policies to curb climate change.

SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes, said: “The automotive industry is putting zero-emission vehicles on Britain’s roads at pace beyond all forecasts, such is the choice and appeal of these new models.

“A well-designed, flexible regulatory framework could help maintain or even increase this pace to ensure we deliver on our

shared decarbonisation ambitions.

“Consumers need choice and encouragement, irrespective of where they live or what they drive. The additional targeted funding for EVs is welcome and will help ensure affordability for certain models.

To ensure we have the reliable, accessible and nationwide charge point network this transition needs, however, requires a similar regulatory approach. The announcement of additional funds for on-street residential

charging must energise much-needed private sector investment, but consumers will only have confidence in the future if there are commensurate and binding requirements on the infrastructure sector. Combining regulatory commitments with financial ones is the key to a successful transition to zeroemission road transport.”

BookMyGarage.com: ‘One-in-five classic cars fail the MOT test, despite not legally requiring one’ Exclusive new data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has revealed almost 20% of classic cars aged over 40years-old failed MOT tests, despite there being no legal obligation for owners to have one carried out.

Obtained via a Freedom of Information request by BookMyGarage.com, data showed 121,204 classic cars aged over 40 voluntarily had an MOT test between January 2019 and June 2021.

Since May 2018, cars aged over 40-yearsold have been exempt from MOT tests and road tax, though owners are still responsible for keeping their vehicles in roadworthy condition. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points.

Of the cars tested, Dodge had the

highest failure rate with over half (55.2%) failing, followed by BMC (Austin-Morris) at 39.3% and Volkswagen at 31.9%.

However, numerous renowned manufacturers also had clean sheet records with zero recorded failures, including Bentley, Wolseley, Saab, Peugeot, Opel, Toyota and TVR. BookMyGarage.com Head of Marketing, Jessica Potts, said: “The fact that almost a fifth of classic cars failed voluntary MOT tests highlights the importance of classic car owners carrying out regular checks and keeping on top of maintenance.

“Even if a classic car covers a limited number of miles each year, it’s not uncommon for potentially dangerous faults to occur.”

First Brands Group joins OESAA The Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) has welcomed First Brands Group as a new member of its organisation.

First Brands Group, which originated from TRICO Group in 2020, also includes the Airtex brand. Both are original equipment manufacturers in their respective fields of wiper blades and water pumps.

First Brands Group Brand and Marketing Manager, Sam Robinson, said: “Joining OESAA was an easy decision for us to make, as it’s a highly respected body in the industry and with our plans for the UK, it was the perfect organisation to align ourselves with.

“TRICO has been well established in the industry for many years, but with the big brand awareness campaign we’re undertaking for Airtex, it’s a great way to share our messages with the aftermarket and reiterate the premium quality message that is so important to raise, especially with technicians.”

Schaeffler updates REPXPERT workshop portal Schaeffler has redesigned its REPXPERT portal, to provide an “even greater resource to technicians, workshop owners and part distributors”.

NEWS OPTIMAL UK confirms new ownership structure OPTIMAL UK Distribution Ltd has announced changes in its ownership, with LKQ Europe selling its shares in the business.

Midlands-headquartered OPTIMAL UK was established in 2009 as a partnership between Geoff Jones (pictured) and Germany-based OPTIMAL AG & Co, which subsequently became part of LKQ Europe.

Now that LKQ Europe has sold its shares in the business, OPTIMAL UK is owned outright by Managing Director, Geoff.

Commenting on the changes, he said: “Being part of the wider OPTIMAL family has been a great help to us and has played a major role in allowing us to establish our brand in the competitive UK market. We will

always be grateful for the support that has allowed us to build the foundations of our company.

TRICO and A1 Motor Stores raise thousands for charity Wiper blade manufacturer, TRICO, recently raised more than £6,000 with its distributor, A1 Motor Stores, for a charity that hosts driving days for disabled people.

During a six-week period in the summer, TRICO and A1 were able to raise the money for charity, Speed Of Sight, which is based in Bolton and run by blind race car driver and multiple World Record holder, Mike Newman and his co-founder, John Galloway.

To celebrate the money raised, TRICO and A1 recently sponsored a track day Speed Of Sight hosted at Teeside Karting.

Eighteen participants drove around the track, with a driving instructor also in the car, in case they needed support.

Kym Smith, A1 Motor Stores’ product manager for wiper blades, was able to experience a blindfolded driving experience on the day and said: “The experience of driving round a racetrack, in a blindfold, with nothing more than an instructor correcting your mistakes so you don’t crash, can only be described as terrifying. All your knowledge and experience of how to drive are thrown out of the window!

“However, when I took the blindfold off, reality set in of what it means to those that experience it. It made me very overwhelmed at

Ben unveils new Silvercloud programmes for younger people Automotive charity, Ben, has launched a new range of programmes on SilverCloud, its digital mental health and wellbeing platform, which are specially tailored to help younger automotive people aged 16 and above.

Free for anyone who works, or has worked, in the automotive industry, including new apprentices, SilverCloud gives people round the clock access to tools that can help them to better manage their mental health and wellbeing.

Programmes on the platform use an evidence-based, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, which focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. SilverCloud also helps individuals to develop positive coping strategies.

The new SilverCloud programmes focus on key areas of mental health and wellbeing affecting young people, such as anxiety, depression, resilience and positive body image.

Each programme features a range of interactive tools, such as videos, activities, quizzes, and audio guides, as well as a personal online support journal.

Total UK partners with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust for a greener Yorkshire Dales Total UK has joined forces with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust to support the planting of 300 trees in 2021 across the Yorkshire Dales.

The partnership, which is expected to run for the next three years and beyond, will see Total UK planting more native broad leaf trees.

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust works with partners to plant trees that will provide habitats for endangered wildlife, prevent flooding, and help make them more resilient to climate change.

The launch of the partnership coincides with the recent rebrand of Total to TotalEnergies, and its mission to become an energy company committed to producing and providing energies that are more affordable, clean, reliable, and accessible to as many people as possible.

The initiative with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is part of Total UK’s Action! Foundation employee volunteering programme, through which employees are given the time and resources to make a difference in society by offering their skills, mentoring capabilities, or a helping hand.

The tree planting activity took place at Ormsgill woodland, a natural wetland habitat in the Dales that is home to a diverse range of native plants and wildlife. As part of the partnership, Total UK employees will also be able to get hands-on with nature and get involved with a range of projects, from dry stone walling to woodland maintenance and springtime lambing.

John Ryder, general manager of Total UK’s Lubricants Division, said: “At Total UK, we’re committed to corporate social responsibility, and that means helping support the local communities and environments we work in.”

PMF introduces this month’s movers and shakers, as they begin a new stage of their career in the UK aftermarket.

VLS

The Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) has installed Mike Bewsey as its new chairman. Mike takes over from Andrew Goddard, who has become Chairman of the United Kingdom Lubricants Association (UKLA).

Currently business unit director of Moove Lubricants, Mike has been involved in VLS since 2016 as a board member.

According to a statement, in his time as chairman, Mike is keen to build on VLS’ achievements to date and make the transition to dealing with specifications built on new technology for vehicles irrespective of the powertrain, including plug-in electric hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles.

Mike said: “VLS has an important role to play in assisting members to meet new market challenges. The recent announcement of the ACEA 2021 sequences, the possible impact of Euro 7, as well as the transition to alternative fuels, including electric and hydrogen, are all impacting lubricant producers.

“Whilst assisting members in working through those challenges, VLS must also continue to support end-users by upholding industry standards, ensuring that retail consumers are protected and workshops can fit with confidence, whatever type of vehicle or engine they are working with.

“I also see a role in VLS undertaking greater outreach with other similar programmes, from Germany’s FSQ programme to the Australian Lubricant Association’s product quality programme, API’s product quality surveys and even ATIEL’s product compliance and monitoring, to ensure a joined-up and cohesive approach in sharing our experience here in the UK.” Mike has penned a column on how hydrogen might impact the lubricants sector (pg 36).

WAI WAI has revealed the appointment of Richard Davies as its business development manager.

Richard has been tasked with helping develop WAI’s activity in the commercial vehicle (CV), passenger car, agriculture and plant markets, as well as increasing presence in the auto electrical business.

Richard brings a wealth of knowledge to the role, with more than 30 years in various roles and extensive experience in the CV and passenger car sectors.

WAI is a worldwide manufacturing, sourcing and distribution company, offering its aftermarket customers ready access to an extensive range of products. The brand invests in research & development, as well as offering in-house electronics manufacturing.

Richard said: “WAI is a strong global brand, offering a wide range of products to the aftermarket, and I’m really looking forward to joining the company and getting stuck into the new role to help push the brand further.”

Banner hopes technicians seek out battery from distributor As one of the founding members of the Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) and Lee Quinney sitting on its advisory board, Banner Batteries is a manufacturer committed and unequivocal about the importance of OE within the automotive aftermarket.

W

hen Lee joined the company as UK country manager almost seven years ago, one of his priorities was to showcase Banner’s OE credentials in the aftermarket. Consequently, the Banner team delivered a number of different campaigns – all glued by its OE history.

Lee said: “A number of technicians are unaware that when they open a bonnet of a Golf or Mini, for example, they will find a Banner battery inside, hence the reason for bringing our OE pedigree to the fore and why it was one of my most important objectives.”

Step forward OESAA

The OESAA platform has proved a helpful tool – live training event, Autoinform Live, for example, has always been a highlight in Banner’s calendar – but Lee believes the organisation is about to take an important step forward, with its chairman Nigel Morgan steering the membership into a new and exciting chapter: “We’re on the right trajectory, thanks to Nigel’s clear strategy of growing

Another one of Banner’s quests is to ensure the technician, when speaking to their distributor, seeks out a Banner battery.

Lee acknowledges that price is likely to have a bearing on that decision, but, so long as the product is “priced competitively, there’ll always be a place for an OE supplier” in the aftermarket, and this is driven through an assurance that product quality and technical performance is guaranteed.

He continued: “If BMW or Aston Martin, for example, choose a Banner battery, there will be good reasons for that! It’s about the quality and development that an OEM can bring to the table. For the medium and long-term, that’s the message that we need to build on.”

UK AFCAR

UK AFCAR has now been formed with the intention of lobbying the UK government in a post-Brexit era. The coalition, comprising of commercial and trade organisations, had already submitted information to the Competition and Markets Authority on Vertical Block Exemption Regulations, ahead of a review on Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (MV-BERs)

NI MOTs

The Northern Ireland Assembly has issued a call for evidence on the subject of extending the MOT frequency in Northern Ireland to 4:2:2, rather than the current 4:1:1.

The IAAF, which opposes the extension, has been holding discussions with the Driver & Vehicle Agency on MOTs; since the exemptions from lockdowns has ended, the number of vehicles now being presented for tests

with issues that need fixing has increased.

Access to data

IAAF is continuing to produce articles on what it is fighting for with regards to access to data, tapping into FIGIEFA’s expertise on the subject. IAAF will also be lobbying the UK government on the issue.

SERMI

While Type Approval had been among the retained European Union (EU) legislation following Brexit, the latest amendments enacted since January were not and this included SERMI, the association created to further develop, own, operate and maintain a scheme and process on access to vehicle repair and maintenance information (RMI).

SERMI approves and authorises independent operators working in the European automotive aftermarket industry sector, to enable them to access security related RMI. Because of the Northern Ireland Protocol, the new SERMI requirements apply in Northern Ireland and IAAF is working with authorities on its implementation.

Block Exemption Regulations (BERs)

The consultation by the EU into MV-BER began in 2019 and has been ‘backwards’ looking, examining the effectiveness of

the legislation. The forward-looking consultation that goes deeper into the maintaining and possible modernising of MV-BER starts later this year. IAAF, through FIGIEFA, has been extremely active in putting forward the perspective of the independent automotive aftermarket.

The current EU MV-BER still applies in the UK until 2023, but after that, it will be up to UK government bodies to come up with their own legislation if they wish to do so. While the IAAF expects the UK government to adopt a modernised BER, in line with the EU, IAAF has formed UK AFCAR to lobby UK government.

If BER were not to be renewed in the UK, then using parts of original equipment quality or matching quality within the warranty period could invalidate the vehicle warranty; however, neither the UK government, nor the EU, can force independent repairers to use only original equipment supplier parts.

For many years, the EU has been very pro-SME and pro-choice, and the IAAF has heard favourable noises from within the commission supporting this stance.

We have to ensure the same happens within the UK government.

Captive parts

FIGIEFA has set up a working group, as the issue of captive parts has been an increasing concern. IAAF will report back on its findings.

VARTA workshop campaign gathers momentum As the nationwide restrictions began to ease in the spring of this year, VARTA was quickly out and about in the field, with the launch of its new VARTA® Promoter concept, designed to support motor factor customers by creating brand awareness and highlighting the technical challenges technicians are up against.

he campaign involves a team of VARTA ‘promoters’ dropping in on independent workshops in a number of regions to deliver a VARTA Power Your Business box of snacks, goodies and promo material. The campaign driver, in addition to building brand awareness and free of charge support to the trade, has been to focus on ensuring technicians are ready to embrace the technology changes, which are accelerating and to be ready to profit from them.

Throughout 2020 and 2021, the VARTA team have encouraged technicians to test every car’s battery, as part of the company’s Back to Better campaign, due to the fact that many drivers haven’t used their vehicles regularly and have experienced battery issues. An upsurge in battery-related problems has been widespread across Europe, and it is vital that a battery test-check is carried out when vehicles are brought into the workshop, VARTA reported.

During the workshop visits, the VARTA team reminded workshops of this and advised technicians not already doing so, to start testing, and not to let a vehicle with a potential battery issue enter and leave without inspection.

VARTA Technical Representative, Ashley Craig, said: “We felt it was the right time to start doing workshop visits again and start

connecting with installers once restrictions were removed. We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country, visiting workshops and engaging with their employees about the challenges of modern vehicles’ battery replacements.

“The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with many workshops not having any face-to-face interaction with a manufacturer for over a year. As some technicians have said, despite many parts of the economy have been closed, the aftermarket has continued to operate, and the support is very welcome.”

The start/stop challenge

Feedback from workshops has also emphasised the challenge of increasingly complex battery jobs, according to VARTA. Most vehicles entering the workshop now have start/stop and with many of them, the battery isn’t under the bonnet anymore; it is in a more-difficult-to-reach location, often hidden from view.

The five-to-ten-minute job of replacing a battery is now likely to be closer to an hour and usually requires re-coding to the car’s ECU via a diagnostic tool.

The manufacturer stated that the added matter of trying to explain to a customer of why their car requires an AGM or EFB battery, rather than a traditional flooded battery can also be challenging; in reality the driver might not have heard of these terms before and be surprised about the cost of newer technology, despite their car being absolutely packed full of electrical consumers.

To help overcome these challenges, VARTA offers the free-to-access VARTA Partner Portal; the platform uses original equipment information to help identify the correct battery for every vehicle, and also includes step-by-step fitting instructions, location of the battery, job time and recoding information.

Continental Automotive ‘adds value’ with electric vehicle training Continental Automotive is an approved Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) centre and can deliver a full electric (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle training programme from its Birmingham headquarters.

ontinental Automotive reported it was pleased to see “such a lot of interest” in its EV training courses, with “very positive feedback” from those candidates who have already attended.

“We really do feel these courses are crucial, given the direction of the automotive industry towards electrification,” explained Continental Automotive Tachograph Product Manager and Training Centre Co-ordinator, Stuart West.

“There is currently a serious deficit in the number of automotive technicians trained to work on EV and hybrid vehicles – latest data suggests just over 5% are currently qualified. We have, therefore, invested in enhancing our training to bring these new technologies into scope to support automotive professionals who want to enhance their skills, and give motorists confidence that their EV and hybrid vehicles can be serviced and maintained safely.

“It is great to be a part of such an important movement, and we are delighted to be able to continue supporting the automotive industry in offering courses that will help to fill this skills gap, making a real difference in the automotive world.”

Continental Automotive cited Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders data in May 2021, which showed that EVs filled 23% of the new vehicle market; however, the IMI reported that only 6.5% of the automotive workforce were ‘EV ready’ at the end of 2020.

The company said many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have communicated ambitious targets to make their vehicles electric, in some cases, converting their full range to all electric as early as 2024. The IAAF recently shared a GiPA forecast stating that by 2025, EVs will

potentially represent up to 21% of the UK passenger car vehicle parc – now, more than ever, there is a need for EV training!

This is also great news for technicians, when considering over the last four years, the average salary of a technician with EV skills is around £7,000 higher than a technician without, according to the IMI (UK Automotive Sector Baseline Report 2021).

TALK OF THE TRADE MyCars, a new app launched to help put independent workshops on a “level footing with main dealers when it comes to customer interaction”, was announced to readers. In an interview with the one of the app’s developers, Adam Fox, he told PMM’s editor, Kieran Nee, that MyCars is unique in its ability to allow workshops to provide their customers with a value-added service in the form of a white label app, which allows them to see key information about their car, make bookings and view exclusive loyalty offers and rewards. Adam said: “The app aims to increase the amount of online bookings workshops get, whilst reducing the amount of time it takes to confirm them, and is designed with a focus on profitable repeat business from existing customers, rather than paying for bookings from price comparison websites.”

Determined to steer our readers in the right direction when it comes to both interesting and valuable content, we’ve flicked through the October edition of PMM and highlighted six stories that were of particular note.

In the second part of PMM’s investigation into cybersecurity and data issues, Neil Pattemore answered the question of whether cybersecurity threatens the very basis of workshop businesses. In a thorough column, renowned figure Neil said: “As an example of the impact that cybersecurity is already having, virtually all vehicle manufacturers (VMs) have introduced a security gateway behind the OBD port on new vehicles, which requires an independent operator to register with the VM to obtain a security certificate. “This also requires them to disclose who they are, their customer’s vehicle details and the work which needs to be performed. This creates anti-trust and conflict-of-interest issues, so there may be a ‘middle ground’ where an intermediary company, such as a diagnostic tool manufacturer, can reduce the exposure of the independent workshop. Unfortunately, this is just a ‘sticking plaster’ for the bigger problem of remote access to the vehicle, where embedded applications now run the diagnostic, service and maintenance functions.”

The impact of COVID-19 continued to make headlines; CCM Operations Director, Tina Drayson, revealed how the pandemic affected the business and what customer service means to her and the company. She said: “One of the immediate effects of the pandemic was that we greatly increased the amount of pick up and drop offs.

We’re lucky in that we have a large courtesy car fleet we can rely on. “We had quite a few customers compliment us on our COVID measures, but the way we see it, it was our duty – everyone had to play their part. It’s true, we were very proactive in reassuring customers that we were doing our best to keep everybody safe, which I believe worked in our favour.” She continued to report that, by June, the business was “back to full steam”.

In a special report, remanufacturing specialist, Shaftec, explored the factors that enabled the company to, not just “weather the storm” of the previous two years, but actually flourish. As a UK-based business operating from one facility in the midlands, it has almost complete process control. This business model means that it can always guarantee constant availability. This stood them in good stead as the world faced up to the global pandemic and Brexit uncertainty. Everything from old core acceptance through to the boxing of fully tested, shelf-ready product happens in one place. That, together with careful and strategic planning and the fact that it has stockholding of over £5 million, meant that apart from the initial couple of months when the industry came to a global standstill, the business and brand have seen continued growth.

INSIDE THE ISSUES

Switching to its winter servicing, PMM teamed up with Rotronics to share both simple and speedy checks to build into everyday workshop routine and service inspections. The company’s managing director, Ken Clark, said: “Independent workshops have a really strong revenue option through battery testing and charging, and our data shows a very positive opportunity. “The increased power demands on a vehicle, due to the darker nights, can create havoc with the vehicle battery, and these excessive drains mean that charging every vehicle entering your workshop is vital. “The battery is one of the single most important components in a vehicle, yet as part of a routine service, the brakes, oil, tyres, exhaust and all fluid levels are all checked – but not the battery.”

Finally, Scantec Automotive’s Ross Kemp began his series of articles, highlighting some of the issues facing today’s workshops when it comes to diagnostic fault finding and the common pitfalls frequently faced with when dealing with modern vehicles: “I am starting off my series of articles with a basic breakdown of fault codes and how they, not only aid in the diagnostic procedure, but how they can commonly lead technicians down the garden path in the absence of (critical) due diligence. “I could safely say that a very large majority of the vehicles we see in our workshop are accompanied by a list of parts that have already been replaced. In most cases, the reasoning behind this appears to be “that’s what the fault code indicated”, or there was a fault for a particular component, and it was replaced. “It, therefore, almost goes without saying that the replacement of said component did not achieve a suitable rectification of the fault; otherwise, the vehicle would have probably not ended up at our door.”

NGK reiterates call for workshops to seize advantage of MOT surge following distributor statement In response to LKQ Euro Car Parts’ call for the independent automotive aftermarket to ‘ride the MOT wave’, NGK Spark Plugs backed the distributor’s calls for workshops to take advantage of the surge in demand for MOT tests.

ehicles due an MOT between March 30th and July 31st last year were eligible for a six-month extension due to the nationwide lockdown – and 5.5 million owners (more than a fifth) took up the offer, according to Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency figures.

Motorists who took advantage of the six-month extension from the end of March last year would have deferred their car’s annual check-up, with the knock-on effect resulting in high numbers of vehicles now needing the annual test.

Randstad argues that the government should “look more carefully” at the technology already at its disposal to help cut emissions of the vehicles currently being driven on the roads, as, despite the 2030 deadline that will see the banning of new petrol and diesel vehicle sales, the company believes owners may choose to “eek out the last miles” from their internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Infrastructure and whole life emissions from the production, maintenance, charging and disposal of electric vehicles remain points of contention, so is enough being done to embrace current technologies?

Randstad Managing Director, Martin Dowd, doesn’t think so – he said: “We’ve said on numerous occasions that, coupled with the advances in ICEs, here are very effective and proven emission-reducing technologies available.

“From our own experience with TerraClean, we’ve seen these benefits first-hand, as it prolongs the life and efficiency of a vehicle, while protecting the environment.”

DPF removal remains a problem

Martin went further with his assessment; he believes there needs to be a greater clampdown on companies offering a diesel particulate filter (DPF) removal.

The company claimed some workshops are still known to be offering removal services, despite the law specifying that a missing DPF, where one was originally fitted when the vehicle was manufactured, will result in an MOT failure being in place since February 2014.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has previously warned that any MOT tester knowingly passing a car, which doesn’t have a DPF or is involved in its removal process, faces serious consequences.

This was illustrated in 2017 when two Sheffield testers received a two-year ban after the DVSA found they were advertising and selling DPF removal services. The testing station in question was also banned for 28 days.

As well as harming the environment, removing the DPF constitutes as fraud, so Randstad is continuing to campaign for workshops to work ethically, within the law and revive blocked DPFs instead of taking them away.

Martin concluded: “The reality behind the engine ban and its implementation of an alternative solution means that petrol and diesel cars are, in whatever form, going to continue to dominate UK roads.

“The solutions available – from brands, like TerraClean, in the efficient removal of carbon deposits and DPF cleaning – are a clear opportunity for motorists, businesses, and government to act now and improve air quality for the UK public.”

FAI Automotive acquired by Motus Aftermarket Parts Originally founded in the 1960s by the Walker family, FAI Automotive plc (FAI) has expanded in the automotive parts distribution aftermarket, generating a turnover of £35million in the UK, Europe and beyond. In this issue of PMF, though, the company announces a change in ownership.

nder Sean Walker and Karen Walker’s stewardship, FAI’s product range has grown from just eight product lines and 24 part numbers, to more than 30,000 part numbers spread across 37 product lines.

In 2020, Jonathan Alexander (pictured) became CEO, with Sean Walker taking the role of chairman. Over Jonathan’s 19 years with FAI, he has helped guide the business through many key events, culminating with the next chapter that will see FAI become part of international group, Motus.

Motus is a South African automotive group. It is a diversified business in the automotive sector, offering a “differentiated value proposition with a fully integrated model across the automotive value chain” through four segments, including aftermarket parts.

Motus Aftermarket Parts (MAP) is a distributor, wholesaler and retailer of parts and accessories for out of warranty vehicles through a combination of owned operations, as well as a franchisee base.

As part of MAP’s expansion strategy,

Motus has acquired 100% of the share capital of FAI. While Motus already owns a network of franchised commercial and passenger vehicle dealerships in the UK through its subsidiary Motus Group (UK) Ltd and has been present in the UK market for many years, this will be the first UK business acquired by MAP.

“FAI’s strategy fully aligns with that of MAP” FAI has an established client base both internationally and within the UK, with 50% of sales generated outside of the UK. Products offered by FAI are complementary to those offered by MAP. Sourcing strategies are also synergistic, according to the company, with more products being sourced from the Far East and Eastern Europe.

One of FAI’s objectives was to establish a distribution centre in China, to better serve its international client base. As this already exists within MAP, this plan will be fast-tracked with a combined presence in a

single facility. Added procurement resources, to assist the South Africa and UK based operation, will also be deployed where required.

The FAI Board will be led by Jonathan Alexander (CEO), with Peter Guinn (CFO) and Tracy Payne (Systems & Procedures Director) being joined by Malcolm Perrie and Carel de Klerk of Motus. Jonathan will also join the MAP Executive committee.

Castrol determined to get motorists back into workshops following ‘decline in service visits’ Motor factors could be about to reap the rewards of Castrol’s new marketing campaigns, designed to encourage motorists to pay their workshop a visit. The company also reveals details of a new product, perhaps perfect for the shelves, in a bid to maintain efficiency of petrol and light diesel engines.

elaying regular vehicle servicing can increase the likelihood of sludge accumulating in the engine, as this is not removed during a standard oil change. Sludge can potentially have fatal consequences for the engine, clogging vital oil passageways and reducing power, efficiency and overall durability.

Many motorists can go without noticing the build-up of sludge. The use of low-quality oil can contribute to the thickening and breaking down of engine oil. Even with normal patterns of use, a car engine’s oil can degrade at very high temperatures, and, over time, this can manifest as a build-up of sludge. To make matters worse, this process is exacerbated by frequent, shorter journeys, as well as poor quality fuel, late or missed oil changes, and by stop-and-go journeys.

A new pre-oil change treatment, Castrol Engine Shampoo, helps maintain the efficient operation of petrol and light diesel engines. It also reduces harmful sludge deposits by up to 85% in petrol engines, according to the company.

Since the pandemic, many technicians have noticed a decline in service visits and, therefore, a reduction in engine checks. Castrol recently conducted nationwide research amongst 1,000 UK car owners, to understand why there is still a drop.

Taking on the Oil Check Challenge This autumn, Castrol launched its Oil Check

Challenge marketing campaign, encouraging car owners to take their vehicle to a workshop, if they are unsure of how to assess the oil level of their car.

The company has created a free marketing pack for workshops to help promote the campaign and to encourage customers and prospects to bring their car in for a check.

The marketing kit comprises promotional email templates, digital advertising banners for use on a workshop’s website and Facebook page, posters to put up in a reception area, leaflets that can be used at point of sale or mailed out and oil check reminder stickers that can be left in customers’ cars.

E10 petrol: are motor factors missing a trick?

Lucas Oil’s Dan Morgan highlights new revenue opportunities from E10 petrol, as he believes many motor factors have yet to join the party!

400% rise in sales of Lucas Oil’s Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner with Stabilizers in the run up to the switchover of ‘greener’ petrol shows a positive response to the government’s campaign, but feedback suggests many sales opportunities are being missed, according to Dan: “Right now, the FAQs we are getting from motor factors – and their workshop customers – are can additives help, can I make any money from them, and have you got something that works? The answer for everyone to all those questions is ‘yes’.”

from several threats to individual components, as well as the engine block.

Put simply, according to the manufacturer, the solvent properties of ethanol attack certain types of rubber seals, hoses and diaphragms, particularly in older vehicles; therefore, motorists need to appreciate E10 is a higher concentration level than E05 and that although most components in cars built after 2011 were designed with the higher level of ethanol in mind, these cars can’t prevent gum and carbon deposits building up more quickly on fuel injectors and other components.

More importantly, they can’t prevent the build-up of water in the fuel tank.

The hygroscopic nature of ethanol means that it readily absorbs water from the air.

When enough water contaminates the petrol, phase separation occurs. This produces two distinct layers of fluid in the tank. On top is petrol, while underneath is

an ethanol/water mix that eventually compromises engine performance. It’s this layer that promotes metal corrosion and other internal problems. E10 standard petrol has double the capacity of E05.

Dan added: “We’ve been telling motor factors that selling our additive to workshop customers is a new revenue opportunity. It protects their customers’ cars against E10 problems in the future, and that it can also work out cheaper to do this than to remain on E05 fuels, which is currently being sold at premium rates.”

Perhaps the fuel crisis has demonstrated that E05 might not always be available when the tank is running low. With a bottle of Safeguard Conditioner in the glove compartment, Lucas Oil believes the car can always be protected.

New markets for the additive are emerging “There’s a good chance that the motorist with a car owns petroldriven garden equipment and/or a boat or another type of leisure craft,” Dan said. “These investments require protection from ethanol, too.”

For anyone with a car that’s usually ‘laid-up’ over winter, there are additional problems to consider.

It wasn’t that long ago that people were removing fuel from the tank before a lay-up; however, modern fuel system designs make this less practical, which means there will be fuel with an increased amount of ethanol lying stagnant inside the system until the spring – contaminating unprotected fuel pipes, seals and diaphragms.

Moreover, the octane levels in the new E10 fuels fall more rapidly than those of E05. The smell of stale fuel is not the only problem, according to the manufacturer, as there may be ignition issues to deal with at the restart.

Lucas Oil’s Fuel Stabilizer is designed to address this; it protects against fuel degradation and ensures a healthy restart.

Helpfully, it’s also appropriate for the fuel tanks of petrol-driven garden equipment, boats and other leisure craft.

Dan concluded: “One of the things we’ve been telling retailers is that that our experience in the US shows that the notion of using additives to solve problems is very attractive to motorists who are reluctant to pay for preventive vehicle maintenance. Our additives range is one of the most extensive on the market. In many cases, all the customers need is information, guidance and an opportunity to buy.”

Engines running on hydrogen fuel ‘could spell good news’ for lubricant manufacturers New chairman of the independent trade body, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS), Mike Bewsey, analyses whether hydrogen could be a viable solution to the emissions challenge and how it might impact the lubricants sector.

T

o date, the debate about the future of automotive transport has centred almost wholly on electric vehicles (EVs). From governments and original equipment manufacturers alike, for both passenger and commercial vehicles, many see battery-powered EVs as the key to achieving carbon neutrality targets; however, EVs might not be a tenable longterm solution if lithium shortages, limited range and the relatively short lifespan of batteries continue to hamper technological advances for these types of products.

Also, the sheer volume of charging infrastructure required, in such a short space of time, means some companies are investigating other options, such as hydrogen. Voices are saying that pure electric might not be the only solution.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology has actually been with us for more than 100 years since the 19th century, first developed by Sir William Grove in 1839.

Hydrogen fuel cell engines require hydrogen and oxygen to react together in a special cell to produce electricity, which can then be used within a battery to power an electric motor. The first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell powered

vehicle to appear was the Hyundai Tucson in 2013, followed two years later by the Toyota Mirai. JLR has recently begun testing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Shell, Volvo and Daimler are all looking at hydrogen as an option for goods vehicles.

Hundreds of filling stations all over Europe are primed to dispense hydrogen fuel for these vehicles. Hydrogen itself is produced from a variety of domestic resources, including renewable power, like solar and wind, as well as natural gas, nuclear power and biomass – but what are

the lubricant challenges to this technology that Toyota calls the future of motoring?

Hydrogen fuel cell or battery-powered EVs have totally different fluid requirements to diesel or gasoline-powered internal combustion engines (ICEs). Lubricant manufacturers have been busy developing fluids to suit these EV needs, catering to the increase in oxidation and the need to dissipate an increase in generated heat around the power units.

But hydrogen can also be used as a fuel itself to drive vehicles, mixing it with air to produce combustion in a near conventional type engine. This could be good news for lubricant manufacturers, as engines running on hydrogen fuel will still need some form of lubrication in the crankcase, to keep them functioning effectively.

Pistons and other moving parts will need to be lubricated to keep the engine functioning properly.

The low ignition energy of hydrogen ensures easy ignition of an ultra-lean mixture with air; however, like any fuel solution, it has its drawbacks with premature ignition and knock. The combustion process of a hydrogen-fuelled vehicle would produce NOx, which would

need to be cleaned by selective catalytic reduction prior to exhaust emission, much as we have at the moment with traditional ICE vehicles and the requirement for exhaust after-treatment devices.

Additionally, in order to be operable, hydrogen needs to be converted from a gas to a liquid, which means the engine needs to run at very high pressures. During engine operation, blow-by will always occur due to the rapid pressure rise and the low density of hydrogen gas.

When exhaust gases enter the crankcase they can condense, when there is no provision of proper ventilation. With gasoline or diesel, water is produced as a by-product of the combustion process and the same applies to hydrogen, only more so!

The water produced as a by-product of the combustion process will mix into the lubricant and reduce its lubrication ability.

As a result, there is a real risk of a higher degree of engine wear. Specific lubricants need to be developed to cope with this dilution. A lubricant that is compatible with increased water concentration in the

In summary It remains to be seen whether hydrogenfuelled or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will become a viable alternative to batterypowered EVs; however, the UK government has signalled its intent to consider hydrogen as a worthwhile option for some forms of transport at least, by recently announcing £11.2 million of funding to

develop and manufacture low-cost hydrogen fuel cell technology for buses and create a hydrogen centre of excellence in Northern Ireland.

Whatever solutions the automotive industry develops, lubricant manufacturers will be watching closely, ready to develop the products required to keep engines functioning properly.

LIQUI MOLY reveals new oil for Ford models With Top Tec 6610, LIQUI MOLY has launched a new motor oil that meets the latest Ford requirements (WSS M2C 952-A1), among others. “

T

his is a top-of-the-line oil that reduces fuel consumption and at the same time offers the engine comprehensive protection,” explained Oliver Kuhn, deputy head of the LIQUI MOLY oil laboratory.

This Ford oil specification is primarily required for the 1.5l Duratorq TDCi engine, but the oil is also officially approved by Mercedes (MB 229.71), Jaguar and Land Rover (STJLR.03.5006), Opel (OV0401547) and is recommended for General Motors (GM dexos D).

In addition, it complies with ACEA C5 and API SP, is suitable for both petrol and diesel engines and, with a viscosity of 0W20, it is one of the low-viscosity motor oils.

Oliver commented: “It, therefore, follows the trend of vehicle manufacturers (moving) away from thick motor oils. With a low-

viscosity oil, the engine needs less power to pump it. This is one of many adjustments made by the carmakers to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.”

This new oil was developed on the basis of Top Tec 6600, which is approved by BMW. After adapting the formulation, the

Ford specification could now be covered: “This makes Top Tec 6610 a good addition to our premium oils,” Oliver added.

Mannol reveals importance of antifreeze to ‘protect engine and operating systems’ Batteries, tyres, lights and wipers will all be in focus this winter, but, according to German lubricant specialist, Mannol, antifreeze should be high on the list as well.

The company believes many drivers think the additive is only there to keep the cooling system from freezing in bitter temperatures.

he reality, though, is that this is just one of the vital tasks that antifreeze has to perform to keep a modern vehicle functioning correctly and to protect its engine and operating systems.

As well as the prevention of freezing, antifreeze also raises the boiling point of the cooling system in hotter temperatures to avoid overheating, and it also has the vital role of protecting the engine and cooling system from corrosion and impurities that can lead to expensive mechanical issues.

As vehicles have become more sophisticated in recent years, and many engines more compact, the demands on the cooling system have increased, according to Mannol. Also, the types of parts used in the

cooling system are no longer just brass, steel or rubber, but could be made from a variety of materials, such as silicon, copper, nylon, magnesium and aluminium. This means that different vehicles now require specific types of antifreeze to function correctly, and use of the wrong product can affect vehicle performance, or even cause cooling system damage.

The best recommendation is to always use an antifreeze specification recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

BG Products director firm on importance of flushing engines

Paul Dobbyn, of Powerflow Limited, BG Products distributor for Great Britian, shares a comprehensive insight into the importance of engine flushing for diesel particulate filter (DPF), turbo and engine longevity. “

S

hould or should we not flush engines?” A question that is often debated amongst technicians.

BG Products has carried out research into deposit control and has identified that a quality oil flush is essential to restoring performance, protecting turbos and DPFs. This research has been supported by both turbo and DPF manufacturer’s findings.

Let’s start by looking at the challenges that a DPF has in maintaining functionality: original equipment manufacturers, under pressure from fleet operators, demand longer service intervals, which is creating a need for longer oil change intervals and putting extra demands on the oil.

Oil has to deal with heat, pressure, moisture, fuel and soot. Oil circulates freely in most parts of the engine, but a tendency for the oil to get behind the piston ring means this oil is no longer flowing as normal, but actually slowly cooking.

If that oil isn’t removed, it will gradually change from liquid to sludge and then to a hard carbon. This interferes with the ability of the rings to flex and centre, as the piston

moves up and down, and this influences both compression and the seal between the combustion chamber and crankcase – “so what?” you may ask.

Vicious circle when piston ring function is jeopardised First, compression is lost, so, in a diesel engine, combustion is compromised. This produces even more soot to deposit on injectors, DPFs, exhaust gas recirculation valves and into oil to handle.

Secondly, the seal between top and bottom of the engine is compromised, allowing more fuel, moisture and soot into the oil and, critically for diesel engines, evaporated oil up into the combustion chamber. Evaporated oil part combusts, resulting in oil residue and ash deposited into the DPF, which shortens the DPF’s life, as it cannot incinerate ash.

Studies show that in as little as 30,000 miles, half of a DPF’s loading is ash (from combusted oil) and so the life of the DPF is compromised dramatically by ash from the burnt oil.

“Regeneration cycles were significantly reduced; in one case study, for example, the number of miles needed to complete a regeneration dropped from 16 miles to 10. Furthermore, the number of miles driven between DPF regeneration cycles rose from 121 to 244 miles.”

BG Products demonstrates effectiveness of restoration flush BG Products’ own research has revealed impressive results on the life of a DPF after using BG EPR (Engine Performance Restoration) Engine Performance Compression Restoration Flush, to restore ring function.

Regeneration cycles were significantly reduced; in one case study, for example, the number of miles needed to complete a regeneration dropped from 16 miles to 10.

Furthermore, the number of miles driven between DPF regeneration cycles rose from 121 to 244 miles, thus halving the need for the fuel consuming regenerations

and so having a positive effect on consumption.

Tests on a 44,000-mile 2008 Ford car showed major performance improvements.

Compression average across the car’s cylinders increased by 2.8%, horsepower improved by an even more striking 7.8% and torque increased by 8.2% following the BG EPR. The improvement was maintained well after the service too, with only a minor deterioration 5,000 miles later.

Debunking the myths The technicians who fall into the ‘anti-flush’ camp often worry about carbon forming a seal, which, if removed, means that the

engine suffers compression loss – this is not well founded.

There may have been some truth in that in the past, or for older vehicles it may be sensible to avoid flushing for other reasons, like moving old, compacted sludge that may interfere with an oil pickup, but not true for modern engines. These have much tighter tolerances than older counterparts; they work better when all components, including injectors, valves, sensors, hydraulic actuators and piston rings, are kept clean – as they were designed to be!

Turbos also benefit from making sure that the oil feed pipes are kept clean, as blockages in that pipe are a major cause of turbo failure.

The conclusion is that using a modern advanced flush, with ring clean technology, is critical to help prolong DPF life in diesel vehicles, plus maintain and restore engine economy and performance, in petrol or diesel vehicles!

Nissens bullish about turbo programme Nissens Automotive says it has a reputation for providing the independent sector with matching original equipment (OE) quality replacement components and repair solutions that give motor factors and their workshop customers confidence. he Nissens turbo offering falls within the company’s engine efficiency & emissions product category. It consists of more than 180 part numbers, catering for more than 2,000 OE references and providing coverage in excess of 30% of the British and Irish car parc. The range is designed and manufactured to match OE specifications, in order to replicate the engine performance, fuel economy, emissions standards and durability stipulated by vehicle manufacturers.

When it comes to installation, each is designed to mirror the existing vehicle system and engine layout, and comes with all the important additional parts, like gaskets or stretch-bolts, that are needed to make fitting an easy and straightforward process, as well as comprehensive fitting instructions in both printed and online formats.

Nissens claimed turbo failures are often accompanied with, or caused by, problems with related components, which is why the Nissens programme also helpfully includes additional products, such as turbo intercoolers and oil feed pipes (OFPs), which, as a best practice procedure, it recommends are replaced at the same time as the turbo.

The turbo OFP is a particularly important component within the turbo system, as it delivers vital lubrication to the turbo from the engine’s lubrication system, ensuring the turbo shaft is sufficiently lubricated and cooled, so is key to the turbo system’s proper operation.

Nissens’ current OFP range caters for 99% of the company’s turbo programme, but reflecting the growing importance of the component, is poised to increase over the next few months. All the related

Melett celebrates remanufactured turbochargers Melett, a supplier of turbochargers and parts, is working with specialist turbo repairers to support motor factors, so that they can take advantage of remanufacturing opportunities and maintain the highest set of quality standards. Melett Group Sales Director, Darren Johnson, shares his views.

T

here is a bright future for the turbocharger in a diverse vehicle parc, thanks largely to the efficiencies it brings. Smaller capacity engines are more powerful than ever before and, thanks to turbochargers, more economical.

New vs reman – quality perceptions and new channels Many people get confused as to the difference between remanufactured and new aftermarket turbos and can often think that they are the same thing.

To remanufacture means to return the turbo to as close to new as possible.

Components are inspected against original equipment (OE) specifications for correct dimensional tolerances and worn components are replaced. A remanufactured turbo should meet OEM standards for quality, performance and durability.

Through Melett’s extensive research, it is feasible for a remanufactured turbocharger to be subject to greater scrutiny by independent workshops than a ‘new’ unit, despite the new unit potentially being of lesser quality than the remanufactured equivalent.

A remanufactured turbo can tick all the boxes for OE quality specification, price, technical quality and performance, while also having a reduced environmental impact; however, low cost and lower quality ‘new’ turbochargers are also widely available and can have a detrimental, disruptive effect on the market.

Promoting higher standards of reman Melett, through its ‘What’s in Your Turbo’ campaign, is reminding the market that when comparing a high-quality product with a lower cost alternative, it is risky to assume that they are equivalent parts, even if they look the same. It is important to consider more than just the visual appearance of a component.

While components look very similar to their higher quality counterparts, premature component failure is common, as poorquality products cannot perform efficiently under the extreme operating conditions. It is important to recognise the point at which cutting margins turns into reducing quality, as this can harm customer relationships.

Every component has a minimal price point and anything lower than that point

can only be achieved by using lower grade raw materials in the manufacturing process.

The consequences of using lower quality components affects the entire supply chain and the reputations of businesses within it. To get it right first time, every time, quality is key.

As an aftermarket supplier, Melett is recognised as the reliable supply partner by small turbo repair workshops through to large volume and OE turbo remanufacturing facilities. Melett is also an approved supplier to several vehicle manufacturers for their own aftermarket turbo programmes.

SPARK PLUG THREAD CHASER A service tool designed to get technicians out of trouble and allow them to pick up the pace, this special spark plug thread chaser from Laser Tools (part number 8083) also features an integrated flat seal-seat milling tool.

Designed to clean and restore threads in the engine block, to allow new spark plugs to be fitted with ease, it ensures that not only are the spark plug port threads cleaned, but that the plug seat is skimmed at the same time. This process removes any contaminants and corrosion, improving the spark plug sealing.

Klarius Products has expanded its range with new aftermarket exhausts, catalytic converters (CATs) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs), including full systems for the trusty Honda Jazz for models from 2015-onwards.
