Is there a storm brewing? I was awoken the other night by a violent storm, one I’d not experienced for many years, but I guess that’s one of the consequences of the sudden warm, sunny weather we’ve enjoyed recently. On the subject of storms, suggestions that the government is considering relaxing the frequency of MOTs to tackle the cost of living has, understandably, created a lot of noise within our industry. At the time of writing, inflation has hit a 40-year high of 9%, as the cost of food and energy soars. The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, is being pressured to support low and middle-income families, but is stretching the annual MOT to a biennial process really the way forward to save families money? We have produced a report (pg 14), where figures within the automotive industry have had their say. Spoiler alert: we’ve not received any comments that support the proposal. Also, this isn’t the first time the frequency of the MOT has been discussed… Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Chief Executive, Mike Hawes, said: “The industry shares the widespread concern over rising prices and the squeeze on household incomes. Safety, however, must always come first and, whilst today’s vehicles are more reliable than ever, regular MOTs ensure safety-critical components, such as brakes and tyres, which wear out as a function of as a result of normal operation, are properly inspected and maintained. “Stretching MOT intervals will undermine the safety net at a time when vehicle miles driven are increasing. To ensure the safety of our roads, drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users, inspections and maintenance must be carried out annually following their first presentation in year three.” There are other proposals being discussed in the cabinet, to ease the burden on families, and I’m sure we’ll discover imminently what the government is going to proceed with, so watch this space… Also in this issue, Boswell Aftermarket tackle the issue of cyber security (pg 20) – do you have ‘cyber liability insurance’? Boswell’s director, Joe Howard, goes into depth about the dangers of the crime, how you can protect your business and what’s covered by the insurance. He explained: “The modern motor factor, like most businesses, will hold and process data on a daily basis and, therefore, run the risk of attack from cyber criminals. At Boswell Aftermarket, we have definitely witnessed an upward trend of cyber-attacks within the trade, and it’s unlikely to relent anytime soon. Motor factors are losing thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of pounds in these attacks and need to be aware of a way to protect themselves.” This piece isn’t one to miss, along with the rest of the articles within this edition of Professional Motor Factor! As always, I welcome your feedback. Have a great month.

NEWS GSF Car Parts opens branch in Yeovil The latest team to join the growing GSF Car Parts network opened the doors to their new Yeovil branch in mid-May. The branch supplies a range of car parts, tools and accessories to members of the public and the trade. The portfolio covers all makes of car and light commercial vehicles. The Somerset site marks another greenfield addition to GSF's portfolio of more than 180 branches, and it is the first business to open on the brand-new Glenmore trading estate west of the town centre. GSF Car Parts Regional Manager for Dorset and Hampshire, Mike Humphries, said: “Yeovil is an area that has a wealth of excellent local garages, so we know there is a market here where people are prioritising the kind of quality parts and service we provide day in, day out across the GSF network.

“This brand-new trading estate is a spot that should quickly become a real hub for the area, so we’re looking forward to establishing ourselves as the go-to motor factor for service, value and availability in Yeovil.”

Experienced GSF Car Parts Branch Manager, Josh Tizzard, has taken the reins at Yeovil, and he is joined by a team that blends a mix of experience at nearby GSF branches and out of industry talent.

‘Used vehicle market has continued to benefit from the backlog on new vehicle production lines’ Following the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ announcement that the used car market grew by more than 5% in the first quarter of this year, LKQ Euro Car Parts CEO, Andy Hamilton, offered his thoughts: “The used vehicle market has continued to benefit from the backlog on new vehicle production lines, which has been exacerbated by the tragic events in Ukraine. That said, momentum has slowed throughout the quarter, as millions of households are now feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis. “These factors – which are also squeezing the new vehicle market – mean the average age of the UK’s vehicle parc continues to increase. For independent garages, this bodes well in terms of inbound work volumes – provided MOTs continue to be an annual requirement. Policy makers ought to note that MOTs are even more critical to road safety as vehicles age. “Our advice to garages is not to get too comfortable and to futureproof their operations through investment in training and equipment. Record numbers of drivers purchased pre-owned zero-emission cars in Q1 – highlighting the need for garages to get hybrid and EV-ready.”

New ACEA heavy duty engine oil sequences published A 2022 edition of the ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines has been published. Developed by the European Association of OEMs, the ACEA sequences are a set of performance standards specifically tailored to the needs of the European market. In the 2022 heavy duty sequences, new E8 and E11 categories have been introduced to replace the now obsolete ACEA E6 and E9 categories. The E4 and E7 categories have been updated with new piston deposit tests, replacing CEC L-101-09. Claims can already be made against the 2022 ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines and will become mandatory for all new claims made from 1st May 2023-onwards. The latest ACEA Oil Sequences for LightDuty Engines are already in operation, having been published in April 2021. UK independent trade body, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications, has welcomed the publication. VLS Chairman, Mike Bewsey, said: “The sequences provide for a modernisation of the requirements for heavy-duty engines and corresponding engine oil specifications that bring them up-to-date in the market. They recognise engine developments in this critical area and align the automotive requirements with the latest heavy duty engine emission standards. Products conforming to the new specifications will provide performance benefits to operators of heavy duty commercial vehicles.”

A driver for LKQ Euro Car Parts, who saved a young couple from a submerged vehicle, has been named the winner of Trakm8’s Road Safety Hero award, an initiative launched by the vehicle technology solutions provider and road safety charity Brake. Gary Nicol was carrying out his usual internal branch-to-branch deliveries for LKQ Euro Car Parts when he noticed a car travelling at speed across the junction whilst waiting at the lights. Moments later, Gary spotted an upturned vehicle submerged in water down the embankment. Initially thinking that the vehicle had perhaps been there overnight, Gary realised the engine was still running. After summoning some passers-by to help, Gary led the efforts to free the couple who were trapped inside. They first went to the female passenger, believing her to be in the driver’s seat due to the angle of the car. Having managed to lift her above the waterline, ensuring she could breathe, Gary then turned his attention to the driver’s side. The driver was trapped in the vehicle because of his seat belt, but some quick thinking from Gary saw him use the

penknife of a bystander to cut him free. Speaking of the rescue, Gary said: “I just did what I think anyone else would have done. When I saw the car in the water, my adrenaline kicked in and I knew I had to help – I didn’t really think about doing anything else. I’m just very glad that they both got out ok and that I was in the right place at the right time. Anything else just doesn’t bear thinking about.” Alongside his award, Gary has also won a one-night luxury London break, with a view from The Shard and a three-course meal at Marco Pierre White’s restaurant.

Checkpoint bought by American company North American tyre equipment specialist, Martins, has acquired Checkpoint. Checkpoint, started by Mike Marczynski (left), comes with 30 years of expertise. Martins CEO, Martin Dépelteau (right), said: “We’re proud to now count in our ranks the extensive know-how and knowledge of the Checkpoint team, as well as the reputation for quality the brand has justly acquired over the years.” Martins plans to integrate Checkpoint within its identity in the “most seamless way possible and without changing anything that makes the wheel safety brand great”. The message from Martins to Checkpoint team members, partners or clients, is that it’s “business as usual”.

NEWS Comline Richardson Racing victorious at Brands Hatch Comline Richardson Racing and title partner Comline Auto Parts (Comline) has celebrated a maiden Porsche Carrera Cup GB victory, following a sensational drive by Will Martin at Brands Hatch. The opening race of the weekend’s double-header was full of drama; starting on pole, Will was in complete control, cruising to victory, before heavy rain intervened and the race prematurely halted. With wet tyres on, the race resumed but was reduced to a five-minute sprint, during which Will held his nerve and fought off his challengers to take the chequered flag and earn a first win for Comline Richardson Racing. Meanwhile, rookie team-mate, Jack Bartholomew, took advantage of the slippery conditions and made up a position to finish fourth on track – his best result of the season so far; in fact, his day got even better, as a penalty for fellow racer, Matthew Graham, saw him promoted to a podium place in third overall. Race two of the weekend saw the rain intensify, and although Will couldn’t secure back-toback victories, he did record a second-place finish. Jack completed his weekend by placing eighth. Comline General Manager – Marketing & Communications, Leigh Davies, said: “The weekend was a phenomenal success for the Comline Richardson Racing team and for the Comline brand as a whole. Watching these two talented young drivers battle it out for honours in their Comline-branded race cars was both enthralling and nerve-racking in equal measure. “It was these moments that we were hoping to experience when we sealed our partnership with Richardson Racing, but seeing Will Martin on the top step of the podium with the winner’s trophy and the Comline logo emblazoned on his chest, was an incredible moment for everyone connected with our brand.”

Ben reveals social anxiety support program To support individuals struggling with social anxiety and loneliness, Ben has launched a new Space from Social Anxiety program on its SilverCloud platform – designed specifically to help people find out about symptoms, understand its causes and develop coping strategies to manage their social anxiety.

Following two years of disruption and periods of social isolation caused by the pandemic, Ben said loneliness became, in itself, an epidemic. Though we are now emerging from the depths of the pandemic, Ben said that many of us found the social restrictions hugely challenging. Social anxiety is playing a major role in the rise of loneliness

“Social anxiety is playing a major role in the rise of loneliness...” as well; naturally, now that COVID restrictions have eased, social interactions are returning to ‘normal’ – but for many, a sudden return to socialising is also a daunting prospect. Social anxiety makes it difficult for people to meet socially with others, to reach out for help and to maintain relationships – which, in turn, contributes to loneliness. The new program, like all of Ben’s SilverCloud programs, is completely free and can be worked through at the user’s own pace – using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques to develop coping strategies to help deal with life’s challenges. To sign up to the SilverCloud Space from Social Anxiety program, visit https://ben.org.uk/how-we-help/forme/articles/silvercloud/

SPECIAL REPORT

MOT

Two-year MOT proposals widely condemned by automotive industry “The counterproductive measure will see motorists paying more for their car maintenance and increase danger on the roads,” said CO-FOUNDER OF BOOKMYGARAGE.COM, KAREN ROTBERG. While nearly a third of vehicles failed the MOT the first time, even more worryingly nearly one in 10 (8.49%) of vehicles failed the test on at least one dangerous item. By relaxing the MOT interval to every two years, up to 2.57 million cars and vans will be on the roads with dangerous defects, according to the real-time comparison site. It is not uncommon for vehicles to fail MOT tests on safety critical components. DVSA data, based on Class 3 and 4 MOT tests conducted between October and December 2021, showed approximately 7% of vehicles failed on brake defects, a further 7% on tyre defects and 10% on suspension defects. Karen said: “This could be genuinely dangerous for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians and we would be seeing cars on the roads with serious defects. And when it comes to the cost of living, this proposal won’t help at all. Having your vehicle checked less regularly is akin to putting off visiting the doctor and just like with healthcare issues, things can get a lot worse if you delay.”

Government proposals to lengthen the MOT interval to every two years have been met with fierce criticism from automotive organisations, brands and personnel. At the time of writing, more than 7,000 people have signed a petition against the idea. Here, we share some of the feedback:

THE INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET FEDERATION CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MARK FIELD, said: “Each time the MOT test frequency has been called into question, it has been proven beyond doubt that extending the test frequency would actually mean an increase in repair costs for drivers, insurance premiums and harmful emissions, as well as reducing road safety as there will be an increase in defective vehicles on UK roads. “It would also be a significant blow to thousands of independent garages and the entire automotive supply chain, who were able to remain open throughout the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring the safe and affordable mobility of essential workers and members of the public.”

AVIA AUTOS OWNER, HAYLEY PELLS, said: “It is surprising, given the decision to end the six-month extension during the pandemic prematurely (when it was actively demonstrated how important this costeffective check is to road safety), that this VAT-free inspection is considered as poor value for money. “In order to maintain the legal obligation of the motorist for road worthiness, the only option would be a VAT-applied solution. I question if this is of better value to the motorist and have concerns regarding the safety of more vulnerable road users.”

MOT

SOCIETY OF MOTOR MANUFACTURERS AND TRADERS CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MIKE HAWES, said: “The industry shares the widespread concern over rising prices and the squeeze on household incomes. Safety, however, must always come first and, whilst today’s vehicles are more reliable than ever, regular MOTs ensure safetycritical components, such as brakes and tyres, which wear out as a function of as a result of normal operation, are properly inspected and maintained. “Stretching MOT intervals will undermine the safety net at a time when vehicle miles driven are increasing. To ensure the safety of our roads, drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users, inspections and maintenance must be carried out annually following their first presentation in year three.”

CEO OF LKQ EURO CAR PARTS, ANDY HAMILTON, said: “MOTs are a critical means of protecting drivers at the wheel. The purpose of an MOT is to ensure vehicles are roadworthy – they can help to identify issues with key systems and components, including brakes and tyres, before they begin to compromise vehicle safety.

“Every year, MOT testing standards are rigorously refreshed to ensure garage technicians are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to maintain maximum vehicle safety – so effectively halving the time they spend in the workshop could lead fixable problems to worsen. The suggestion that this move will save consumers money is a red herring, as it risks exposing drivers to costly repairs further down the line. The MOT has also arguably never been more important. The ‘new normal’ of hybrid working means many people are driving far less frequently than before the pandemic, which has a knock-on effect on vehicle health. Brakes, for example, can begin to corrode when there isn’t sufficient motion to prevent rust from building up, and particulate filters can become blocked if vehicles aren’t given the chance to burn off any deposits. “As well as these vital safety considerations, MOTs are also a key revenue driver for independent garages. So any move to scrap annual testing, stripping away this source of regular work, would place huge pressure on an industry already grappling with challenges from supply chain disruption and skills shortages, through to the rise of so-called captive parts by original equipment manufacturers and dealerships. “In practice, a reduction in the frequency of MOTs is unlikely to save consumers money. A more effective solution would be to promote the availability of MOT testing within the UK aftermarket – independent garages have the flexibility to offer more competitive prices than dealerships, with equivalent – if not better – service quality. We would encourage the government to rethink this suggestion and explore more effective ways to reduce the squeeze on household finances.”

PEOPLE & INDUSTRY

INTERVIEW

Factor One Marketing offers a ‘very personal service’ Fresh from joining the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), Factor One Marketing Director, Simon Mullin, answers our questions and explains how his and his team’s experience is crucial.

Q

Hi Simon, it’s great to have Factor One Marketing make its debut in PMF – can you tell our readers what the company does? Simon Mullin (SM): “Our niche area is primarily producing bespoke publications and promotional activities, which help support the motor factor and manufacturers/suppliers. “Currently, we write a quarterly technical parts magazine for and on behalf of the PDP buying group and also for individual factors, to help promote their businesses. “We also produce a quarterly equipment and tools magazine, which is distributed by numerous factors across the UK. Additionally, we scope and run promotional activities for manufacturers through the motor factor.”

Q

What experience do you and your team have within the automotive aftermarket?

SM: “I’ve (left) always worked in garages or factors, ever since I left school – 28 years at Andrew Page – sales and marketing director. “Likewise, Rob Croft (right), always worked in factors after leaving school – 26 years at Andrew Page, primarily running the technical and training division, while, Rebecca (centre), our graphic designer, spent 12 years at Andrew Page, marketing manager.”

Q

The company has quite a portfolio of clients – what services do motor factors utilise most? SM: “The publications mainly – we do not create advert-driven publications. Instead, we work closely with the suppliers to scope and produce technically driven articles that relate very much to the factor staff and workshop cliental. “The tools and equipment magazine offers a full support service to factors, who may already sell, but want to sell more, or

where they currently don’t sell any at all. We personalise the magazine’s front and rear covers for each individual motor factor, so it, effectively, becomes their publication. “We also provide a communication link between the advertisers and our factor distribution partners, full price files to accompany, as well as online training before each publication lands.”

Q

When a motor factor approaches Factor One Marketing, what’s the process from enquiry to finished product? SM: “As we are a small team, it’s a very personal service – we work closely with each client to establish a strong and clear brief. Once this is set in place, we project manage on a personal basis to ensure we deliver exactly was agreed. “Having spent so long working in the industry, we pretty much know most of our clients, or they know of us and the quality of what they can expect.”

Q

Is there a project that stands out as one of your favourites? SM: “Not really, but we do very much enjoy producing the PDP publication, Auto Evolution, and the tools and equipment magazine.”

Q

If a motor factor is undecided, how would you persuade them to utilise Factor One Marketing’s services? SM: “Based on our history and experience, we fully understand how the processes behind running a factor branch works, so we engage closely with the personnel to help ensure a promotion, or publication, gets out to where it is most effective – in this case, the workshop.” For more information about Factor One Marketing, www.rdr.link/FFK002

OPPORTUNITY

Capitalising on its expertise to meet the demand for improved mechanical performance, Motul has developed a wide range of additive products for professionals. Andy Wait, Motul UK's head of PCMO, says Motul’s Professional additive range offers effective solutions and revenue opportunities:

Motul additives ‘add value and opportunity’ M

odern engine fuel consumption is conditioned by the combustion quality of the fuel used. Also, combustion and friction of internal parts leads to wear, metal abrasion, and increased operating clearances. The Motul additive range allows professionals to provide customers with efficient solutions to fulfil their desire for increased engine performance – covering engines and related parts, ranging from transmission to cooling system. The Motul offer, however, is not simply about the quality and effectiveness of the products themselves: Motul sees its additives as something to enhance the service offer; therefore, it has developed additive injector systems, which are compatible with the Motul product range,

and which provide you with opportunities to both generate potential customer interest in the range, and, of course, benefit from a further additional revenue stream.

Fuel additives

Engine fuel combustion is never perfect, due to residues from unburnt fuel molecules or fuel impurities. These create deposits on the valves, piston heads, rings, and injectors, or in the carburettor. Injector or carburettor fouling increases the size of fuel drops dispersed in the chamber, resulting in poorer fuel combustion and increased consumption. Such fouling gets on the valves and pistons, disturbing the movement of mechanical parts among themselves. Friction is then higher, especially between the piston rings and cylinder walls, and disturbs optimal engine operation. Last, poor combustion in the engine also causes clogging in the exhaust aftertreatment system. This leads to a sharp drop in its efficiency. 씰 PETROL ADDITIVES: Motul’s Fuel

System Clean (left) removes contamination from the entire fuel system and cleans it, while binding moisture and condensed water. 씰 DIESEL ADDITIVES: Diesel System

Clean removes contamination and binds moisture and condensed water throughout the whole system, while DPF Clean maintains the diesel particulate filter, when used regularly, and supports regeneration.

The Motul fuel additive range integrates detergent molecules, which decrease and even eliminate such fouling.

Oil additives

Engine fouling, due to incomplete fuel combustion in the engine, is not limited to the combustion chamber. It can also contaminate valve lifters and the rest of the cylinder. This fouling hinders the interaction of metallic parts and increases abrasion, causing abnormal wear, which can mean frequent oil changes, and even cause engine failure. This wear can also damage the oil system, causing leaks. Motul’s oil additive range includes a

choice of products to decrease and eliminate fouling, while also stopping leaks: Engine Clean cleans by dissolving contamination and deposits in the oil system, while Engine Oil Stop Leak puts a stop to leaking engine oil and helps to regenerate engine gaskets, while keeping them soft and supple. Hydraulic Lifter Care prevents pressure loss and reduces worrying noises caused by friction.

Transmission and cooling system Motul’s Automatic Transmission Clean removes contamination and deposits in automatic transmissions, while Radiator Clean eradicates deposits throughout the cooling system and Radiator Stop Leak is self-explanatory.

Service at the heart of everything Motul sees its additives as something to enhance your customers’ service offering, and for this reason it has developed its 2 in 1 and 3 in 1 (top-right) injector systems.

OPPORTUNITY

These allow a workshop technician to apply two to three additives at one time. Once the machine is connected up to the relevant vehicle system, it is simply started and can then be left to run through the additive programmes automatically, leaving the technician free to focus concurrently on other tasks at hand. Should you stock Motul products to sell into workshops, these machines are available; thereby, you would offer a complete additive and injector system – a potentially attractive revenue generating opportunity for both you and your customers. SECURITY

What do you know about cyber security? Has your insurance broker been speaking to you about cyber insurance? If the answer is ‘no’, then they should be! Boswell Aftermarket Director, Joe Howard, explains why:

T

he modern motor factor, like most businesses, will hold and process data on a daily basis and, therefore, run the risk of attack from cyber criminals. At Boswell Aftermarket, we have definitely witnessed an upward trend of cyberattacks within the trade, and it’s unlikely to relent anytime soon. Motor factors are losing thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of pounds in these attacks and need to be aware of way to protect themselves.

What is cyber-crime?

Cyber-crime is criminal activity carried out via computers or the internet. Individuals or criminal groups target networks to steal personal information for profit. Cyber threats can include: 씰 Phishing emails: bogus emails asking for security information and personal details 씰 Webcam manager: criminals takeover your webcam and then blackmail you with the images

I

씰 File hijacker: criminals gain access to

files and hold them to ransom

씰 Keylogging: criminals record what you

type of your keyboard, which can include important passwords 씰 Screenshot manager: criminals take screenshots of your computer screen 씰 Adclicker: fake adverts that give criminals remote access to your computer through a specific link

These types of crime can impact any business both financially and reputationally. These days consumers are aware of the potential risks; according to Zurich SME Risk Index, 25% of mediumsized businesses said they have been directly asked by customers what cyber security measures they have in place. Under the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), where a customer’s personal identifiable information (PII) is lost, stolen or leaked, a company can be fined up to €20 million or 4% of turnover – whichever is the higher figure.

“Under the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), where a customer’s personal identifiable information (PII) is lost, stolen or leaked, a company can be fined up to €20 million or 4% of turnover – whichever is the higher figure.” How can you protect your business?

There are a number of ways that you can improve your cyber security to help both yourself and your customers: Identify the risks: if you understand the risks your business could face, you can

protect against them. Under GDPR, businesses have 72 hours to report a breach of personal data or face significant fines, which could have major implications for your business Update your passwords: this is a very effective way to protect against cyberattacks. A password generator is a good way to come up with robust passwords Email vigilance: delete emails that look suspicious, and have a training schedule in place to help staff spot anything that looks unusual. Phishing emails are becoming more convincing, and criminals change tactics regularly, so staff need to be updated regularly on what to look out for

What is cyber liability insurance? Cyber liability insurance can help protect your business assets with cover for: 씰 Loss or damage to digital assets, such as data or software programs 씰 Business interruption from network downtime 씰 Cyber exhortation where third parties threaten to damage or release data if money is not paid to them

씰 Customer notification expenses when

there is a legal or regulatory requirement to notify them of a security or privacy breach 씰 Reputational damage arising from a breach of data that results in loss of intellectual property or customers 씰 Theft of money or digital assets through theft of equipment or electronic theft Third-party cyber insurance can also be arranged to cover the assets of others, typically your customers. Virus

An engineering client had a virus planted into its system and was unable to use its IT for five days whilst its IT support resolved the issue. It cost £22,000 to rectify, while all accounting, invoicing, stock control were affected. No payments could be made or received, and it coincided with monthly payroll time, which delayed paying the employees.

SECURITY

System breach

A client suffered an IT breach where 400,000 fake credit card statements were sent to its customers and other companies throughout the UK. The IT costs to rectify the damage, along with the estimated loss of revenue, was £24,000.

System hack

Hackers gained access to a motor factor’s email system and sent emails to all of its customers purportedly from either the chairman or finance director, saying that the company had changed its bank details. Considerable time was spent contacting over 200 customers to tell them to ignore the email as it was not true. Several had already changed their records.

E-CATALOGUING

‘Staying ahead in a digitalfirst world’ Remanufacturer and technical services provider, Carwood, explains why and how it is supporting its customers with new tools and innovations, the latest being its online part finder and ordering system at carwoodecat.co.uk.

N

ever has the saying ‘time is money’ been truer. Exacerbated by a growing fast-service culture, aftermarket companies are under constant pressure to save both, whilst still providing great service. Garages must turn ramps faster, and at the same time, ensure a rightfirst-time, quality job. You need to convert calls into sales quicker, then get the right part, to the right place, at the right time. With every level being squeezed, the challenge is for companies, like Carwood, to make themselves easier to do business with and drive much-needed time and resource gains through the distribution chain – but how?

Introducing Carwood’s new eCat

Carwood believes that its new eCat and ordering system is one such solution. By adopting more agile, user-friendly ways of working, the original equipment (OE) approved remanufacturer plans to help professionals throughout the chain improve both their productivity and service.

I

22 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JUNE 2022

“We’ve been using Carwood’s eCat for a few weeks now,” commented Ian Sutcliffe, branch manager, Autovaux – Leeds. “Whilst the online catalogue is a good addition, the game changer for us has been the ability to quickly access realtime pricing and stock availability online, so that we can quote for, and confirm the order, whilst our customer is still on the same call. As well as making for a better customer experience, this can shave valuable time off each sale – when you consider the amount of calls we take every day, this can soon add up.”

Automotive Parts Distribution – Norwich Branch Manager, Keith Swann, said: “As well as the service benefits for our counter team, Carwood’s eCat has ensured our back-office staff can work more effectively too; for example, the stock builder allows us to quickly add parts into the basket and check stock. Similarly, the handy reorder function means we can replicate previous stock orders with the hit of a button. This has enabled us to streamline key processes, saving valuable time and resource that can be channeled into other business opportunities.”

Available on desktop, tablet and mobile, the platform provides access to Carwood’s full aftermarket portfolio of new OE and OE-approved remanufactured fuel pumps, injectors and turbochargers, plus ancillary parts. Users can search by VRM, OE part number, competitor cross reference, Carwood number or year/make/model, and in just a couple of clicks, access the latest cataloguing data. As well as up-to-date part information, users will be able to view product images, technical documents and installation guides, helping to ensure accurate part identification and fitment on vehicle. What’s more, going beyond a cataloguing function, by logging into an easy-to-set-up account, you can use the

tool to access live stock feeds and pricing, place next-day and stock orders, and track the status of current and historical orders, further streamlining the purchasing process.

Continuous development

“The eCat is just one of a number of tools that we’re developing to help us and our customers thrive in an increasingly digital world,” said Carwood Turbo Sales Manager, Will Johnson. “By the end of the year, the eCat will also include a warranty portal, which will allow our customers to manage and track warranty online, speeding up the claims process.” For more information about Carwood, www.rdr.link/FFK006

SOFTWARE

Bradford Auto Parts enjoys ‘efficiencies of digital transformation’ Bradford Auto Parts has implemented Autopart Online from MAM Software to deliver a wide choice of parts to more workshops across the city.

T

he company already used Autocat, MAM Software’s electronic parts catalogue, to find all the automotive components for its customers; however, its new joint-owner, Kabir Hussein, wanted to incorporate a fully integrated ERP SaaS solution, so it could offer its customers a quicker and more comprehensive service while enjoying the benefits of cloudcomputing. “These days, it’s important to go digital,” Kabir said, stating why his company integrated Autocat with Autopart Online. Kabir had used MAM Software’s business management solutions at a previous company, so he recognised that Autopart Online could help his new company achieve greater efficiencies. At the same time, being a cloud-based system, Kabir knew that Autopart Online offered security and convenience of automatic backups.

James Mitchell, managing director of MAM Software’s parent company, Kerridge Commercial Systems, said: “We’re delighted Kabir chose Autopart for his company’s business management software. The control his team has gained from being able to quickly assess sales and stock is one of Autopart’s many benefits.” Kabir added: “Autopart delivers much value to our business. Firstly, we have complete control of our stock, and we can see what we are and aren’t selling at a glance, but we can also see what our customers have paid for products in the past. This functionality is handy when building those long-standing relationships with customers.”

Bradford Auto Parts started life as a local motor factor in 2006. The company built-up a loyal customer base, but in 2019, Kabir bought into the business. Since then, the company has developed its strategy and accessed new markets through established online channels, like eBay. Kabir said he was also happy with the integrated ledger system and the way Autopart Online creates professional invoices with a few clicks of a mouse: “It was hard before with pen and paper, but the way the system integrates with Autocat’s online catalogue saves us a lot of time. “We can also instantly look up parts, making us more efficient. And this gives the customer a great service because they know we can work with them quickly.” Since implementing the software in late 2021, Kabir and his partners feel Autopart Online has brought a transformative boost to their business: “We wouldn’t want to do without it now. From accounting to sales, stock management, and reporting, Autopart Online makes running a modern motor factor much easier!” For more information about MAM Software, www.rdr.link/FFK007

MARKET TRENDS & ANALYSIS

Having worked in the emissions industry, for European Exhaust and Catalyst (EEC), for more than 18 years, Ben Kendrick’s friends, family members and colleagues in the industry often start a conversation with the same question: what’s going to happen to you guys with all these electric vehicles (EVs) now?

I

t’s not difficult to realise that EVs do not require an exhaust system, and no demand for these parts obviously has a direct impact on our core business. Now, the shortest answer I would give to that question is that I remain sceptical of the government’s ambitious target and not everyone wants an EV, for varying reasons. However, to expand on that we need to look at a few statistics: 씰 The government’s plan is to phase out sales of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, with an exemption for a limited number of hybrid vehicles until 2035 씰 Currently, around 1.3% of vehicles on the UK roads are fully electric The first thing to consider is whether the UK has the infrastructure to charge these EVs? There are huge amounts of public funding being budgeted for charging stations around the country and, additionally, BP has announced a £1 billion investment in rapid charging stations. But that would suggest we are nowhere near yet, and that is for the 1.3% of vehicles currently on the road – how much closer will the infrastructure be when only EVs are to be sold (as new) in eight years’ time? Consider also what this means for the EV owners; the ideal choice would be to charge a vehicle at home – how is this possible if someone lives in an area with shared parking or on a roadside where sometimes it isn’t possible to park in front of their own home. Also, does this mean streets will be lined with charging cables? What does that mean for health and safety? What does it mean for crime rates for the

I

ELECTRIFICATION

Where is the industry heading? materials in the cables? Since the announcements were made, two things have happened to the used car market: 씰 Used car prices rose by 30% on average last year 씰 The market boomed with sales up 11.5% What does this tell us? In my opinion, it’s a market prediction that used petrol and diesel cars will be around for a long time to come. A good proportion of the country will hold onto their cars for longer before changing them, as they do not want to move to EVs or cannot afford to; the average cost to buy an electric car in the UK is around £44,000, prices range from £17,350 up to £138,826 or even more. So, looking at the original question in terms of future sales of catalytic converters (cats) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs), I think the demand for these products will continue well past the government’s axe blow on the internal combustion engine. If vehicle owners keep their cars longer, then they will require regular maintenance and continuing MOT tests; therefore, the likelihood of a cat or DPF replacement is higher. Another thing to consider is our markets outside the UK. We have a large customer base throughout Europe and beyond, and there are a number of countries that will not apply the same bans as the UK. Developing countries often run older vehicles and their emission laws may still be catching up with other countries. EEC’s current and future development plan is well placed to cover the vehicles still being produced up to 2030. The demand for our

SUMMER

Streetwize encourages customers to stock up for summer As we approach the summer months, many motorists will be planning a holiday yet again. Streetwize, boasting a wide range of car accessories, explains why you should start to consider stocking up for the summer season:

R

esearch by Hoseasons, the staycation trend is set to continue here in the UK this summer. Motorists will be keen on ensuring their vehicles are in tip-top condition and that they will have all necessary travel essentials before they set off on their trip. However, while we have seen the worst of COVID-19 behind us, lockdowns have been happening in major cities of China, which could have a knock-on effect on stock availability, and it could lead to an increase in shipping rates. Along with the surge in demand for products, mixed with the rising cost of both raw materials and energy, Streetwize is preparing for a bumpy ride. Streetwize Director and Co-Founder, Murray Silverman, said: “After trading for 35 years, we have been through both the best and worst of times, from achieving record sales, sailing through economic downturns to having our old site being flooded by the local river. These things have taught me that we must be ready for all kinds of challenges that may lie ahead.” While Streetwize’s stock availability is at a healthy level, at this time of writing, Murray is encouraging you to stock up for the summer, as the ongoing situation in

SWBMS1

China may lead to shipment delays. That said, it is important to keep in mind that this situation is affecting businesses and suppliers right across the world.

Navigating through the transition

In addition to encountering the aforementioned situation, the purchasing and sourcing team at Streetwize have been working hard in exploring new avenues to expand its product range, to come in-line

with what appears to be the early stages of a transition in the car industry. Streetwize currently boasts over 1,600 products and is expanding. Recently, it added a new collection of car top covers (SWCTC5-9), which protect the vehicle’s roof, windscreen, side windows and wing mirrors against dirt, dust, droppings and other pollutants. These car top covers complements Streetwize’s breathable and waterproof full car covers. Also, new to Streetwize’s valeting range, is its smear-free mirror/glass cleaner spray (SWCHEM47). When it comes to sourcing new products, Streetwize looks at two things: the first is identifying what consumers want, and the second is to see what is likely to be adopted in the future. Streetwize is already catering to the electric vehicle (EV) market, with its range of EV cables. Upcoming products include a Bluetooth vehicle battery monitoring system, emergency tyre repair kit (SWCHEM48) and professional socket wrench set (SWTOOL61). DIAGNOSTICS & TOOLS

With the growth of hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) sales, workshop customers need to accurately and safely take high voltage (HV) electrical measurements associated with the technology – Hella Gutmann supplies the equipment, and Neil Hilton offers the insight:

Hella Gutmann introduces MT-HV high-voltage measurement module F ollowing the recent introduction of the mega macs X and macsRemote diagnostic devices, Hella Gutmann has again addressed the future with the addition of another ‘must-have’ tool for workshops. HV vehicles are here to stay, so the safe and accurate measurement of their electrical voltage is a necessity for workshops that intend to stay in the game, because they don’t want to be turning away business to the vehicle manufacturers’ (VMs) franchised dealers or other more future oriented competitors; therefore, they need a tool to allow them to undertake repairs and diagnosis on these vehicles.

I

28 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JUNE 2022

Introducing…

The Hella Gutmann MT-HV module, was specifically created for work on electric and hybrid vehicles and utilises permanently integrated HV measurement technology; however, it also incorporates a slot where the more familiar MT-56 and MT-77 low voltage (LV) modules can be inserted, which transforms the MT-HV into a wireless measurement module for both LV and HV measurements – it’s the perfect tool to offer your workshop customers. Specially designed for HV measurements, the MT-HV’s cables, which have a thick cross-section that makes them easy to hold while wearing protective gloves, also encompass safety features, such as the contact switch that must be held when taking the measurement. In addition, if necessary, the measuring tips can also be easily replaced and even be used with VM specific, HV adapters. As an internal battery provides its power supply, apart from the measuring cables, there is no lead or connection that could be a distraction or safety risk when work is being carried out on HV components. The MT-HV operates wirelessly, with its control unit communicating with a Hella Gutmann mega macs X, for example, via Bluetooth.

Just as we have done with the mega macs X, we have also changed the way the software licences for the device can be set and changed to suit the immediate requirements of the workshop. For instance, provided that the right accessories are used, such as the appropriate measuring tips and terminals, as well as the correct ampere clamps to match the current, the MT-HV with a LV module inserted, can be used with a basic X3/X4 software licence. This allows the measurement technology to function as a two-channel, digital multimeter and ultrafast oscilloscope, exclusively for LV measurements. In addition, in conjunction with a MT-77, it can be connected to LPD kit sensors and is able to perform pressure measurements.

The mega macs X

The mega macs X provides flexibility with an array of options when it comes to both hardware and software configurations. It allows individual workshops to choose whether they wish to combine their existing desktop browsers or tablets with the mega macs X or move to a totally mega macs driven platform. This variability means that, should the workshop’s requirements change, then it is able to alter the mega macs X setup to match.

028_PMF_JUNE22_Layout 1 25/05/2022 10:00 Page 29

DIAGNOSTICS & TOOLS

The mega macs X is not only flexible in terms of hardware, thanks to the different software modules that are available, workshops also have a choice when it comes to the scope of the services that can be accessed. This ensures that the workshop is always able to gear the service level it requires to the needs of its customers and, if necessary, the software module altered to do so. The mega macs X is also very different in appearance, as it has neither a display nor a keypad. At first glance, the wired OBD plug with integrated LED lighting looks like a modern, neatly designed Bluetooth VCI, which incidentally it is, but this future-orientated and flexible solution

is also the most advanced diagnostic tool Hella Gutmann has developed. Another major selling point is that it incorporates the processor, diagnostic software and integrated diagnostic protocols, which includes among others, the CAN FD and DoIP for recent vehicle models, such as Škoda Octavia, Volvo XC 90 and Golf 8 of Volkswagen, and communicates on wirelessly. The mega macs X approach also allows workshops to control their overheads, as beyond the one-off costs to purchase the mega macs X hardware and relevant SDI X software, the only ongoing costs are for the associated annual licence, which includes any updates and system improvements. As with the other mega macs devices in the Hella Gutmann line-up, the mega macs X is equipped with ADAS calibration software, which is now a ‘must-have’ feature. In addition, however, it also comes with a Cyber Security Management (CSM) function. This means that instead of having to register individually with each VM portal to obtain diagnostic releases for their customers’ vehicles, a one-time

authentication, activated by proof of identification by passport or identity card, is all that’s needed for a mega macs user to have a clear path to work on all vehicles with a security lock, at the usual diagnostic depth.

The macsRemote

The macsRemote provides diagnostic access to newer vehicles and allows independents to legitimately access VMs’ own tools, to diagnose diagnostic faults and activate solutions, from the moment it leaves the showroom.

Here, Ian Holt at Univar Speciality Consumables, explains what causes NVH and what products you can stock in your branch: NVH is a measure of how much unpleasant aural and tactile feedback the car delivers when it’s being driven. Put simply, the noise is what the motorist can hear, the vibration is what they can feel, and the harshness is how much of an effect bumps, noise and vibration have on the cabin and its occupants. NVH reduction is a globally recognised issue, spurred on by consumers who want increasing insulation from the environment they're driving through. Today, car drivers expect even sporty convertibles to be NVH minimal.

What causes NVH? There are three main sources of NVH in a vehicle, which revolve around the interaction of the tyres with the road surface, the movement of airflow around the car as it travels forward, and the car’s engine and drivetrain components. Automotive companies are in a constant battle to reduce

NVH in these areas and spend millions of pounds annually to help achieve this. As technology advances, motor car design has become more complex too, with car design engineers needing to take more factors into consideration when designing a car. Not only do they have to cater to the more discerning customer who already demands a quieter cabin and a smoother ride, they now must consider the future of automotive propulsion. Thirty years ago, if someone was travelling at high speed, for example at 70mph, in a 2l diesel car, they wouldn’t have been able to hold a conversation in the cabin of the car, let alone worry about low-level squeaks, vibrations and rattles. In 2022, road surfaces are quieter, car shapes are more aerodynamic, and – possibly offering the biggest NVH challenge of them all – electric vehicles are about to transform the automotive industry. It means that all those small and insignificant noises around the cabin of the car that would normally

be drowned out by the noise of the engine, are now easily heard. The primary reason for NVH issues results from the car’s mechanical and electrical systems, and their origins can be as varied as the challenges they present. Anywhere where there is friction between two materials there is the possibility of noise and vibration. Sliding components, like windows, seats, sunroofs, switches, electrical actuators, and all other interactions between surfaces and components as the vehicle travels down the road, can present an NVH challenge. The ideal situation would be to design these issues out at source; however, this is virtually impossible. The only way to mitigate NVH issues is by using specialist, carefully designed products specifically for NVH reduction.

Combatting NVH At Univar, we work closely with specialist partners and manufacturers, including DuPont, an innovative, science-led provider of technology-based products and solutions to the automotive industry. One of DuPont’s leading brands is MOLYKOTE, a widely recognised specialist industry lubricant brand specifically designed to reduce NVH. Other examples include noise-reducing greases for motors and actuators, lubricants for friction events involving cockpits, consoles, and interior trim and dry film, as well as antifriction coatings for lock mechanisms, catch plates, and seatbelt components. The world of NVH is going to become more prevalent in vehicle design as consumers demand more from their car, electric-powered motors become mainstream, and vehicles get quieter. It’s vital, therefore, that aftermarket professionals research the range of solutions that are at the forefront of NVH reduction, with smart lubrication technology that includes oils, greases, pastes, semi-dry fluids, and dry film coatings. They must choose wisely and, despite working under pressure and to tight deadlines, not hastily.

PIPE CUTTER

The KNIPEX pipe cutter for multilayer and pneumatic hoses (90 10 185) “makes life easier in the workshop”. The tool is ideal for all liquid, multilayer and pneumatic hoses or pipes commonly available on the market in the wide application range from four to 20mm. KNIPEX said, with universal support for right-angled positioning, the tool is easy on the hands even in continuous use, thanks to the low force required to operate it. The pipe cutter has ergonomically shaped handles made of fibreglassreinforced plastic for comfort. The pipe cutter also features an automatic opening with a spring mechanism, which is useful for repetitive work. The tool has an exchangeable blade made of high-strength special grade steel, which is oil-hardened and tempered. The blade uses a design that produces clean, burr-free cut surfaces, and there are supporting base plates that hold the hose or pipe at a right angle in relation to the blade. WWW.RDR.LINK/FFK015
