Mind the gap! Some worrying news hit my desk between issues, following on from the news and overwhelmingly negative feedback from industry personnel about the potential plans to extend the MOT frequency to every two years: more than eight out of 10 (84%) used car buyers would support this move. Irrespective of which direction we turn, we cannot escape price hikes at present, so I can understand why the public would seize any opportunity they could to save a few quid, but the general industry consensus is that it'd be 'short-term gain but long-term pain' for the consumer. That belief isn't universally held by motorists: the monthly Startline Used Car Tracker, which assesses evolving trends in the used car market, showed that 69% of used car buyers questioned believe their vehicle would remain safe, despite the longer gap between testing. I raised this topic with my extended family recently – once the post-mortem of Liverpool’s european final defeat had concluded – and my brother argued that the MOT frequency should be determined by a vehicle's mileage, not the vehicle's age. There was a survey published a few years back, suggesting that the majority of motorists would be in favour of that policy. While I can see merit in that concept, I can also see flaws, such as consumables in vehicles not driven regularly potentially perishing – what do you think? Send me your views. UFI Filters’ Karl Ridings has his say on the subject in part one of our interview (pg 18) – he said: “Firstly, what is important is that the market understands the need to follow the recommended service period of the vehicles. Relating to the MOT being extended, my opinion is that the aftermarket fought for this to be scrapped for many years and thankfully was successful. To keep our roads safe and to identify potentially dangerous cars on our roads, I believe it should not be extended to two years.” Moving on, this issue features another great interview – this time with CTEK Global Aftermarket Division and Product Manager, Gary Brown (pg 12). Following the expansion of CTEK’s UK team, in order to strengthen its presence in the electric vehicle supply equipment market, I asked Gary if this changed CTEK’s stance on internal combustion engines (ICEs) – he was emphatic: “This announcement doesn’t change CTEK’s focus on battery chargers for ICE vehicles at all.” He continued: “It’s also important, of course, that motor factors and professional workshops consider both sides of the coin, as an increasing number of customers will be looking to buy products for both ICE and electric vehicles (EVs), as we see a gradual but sustained change in the type of vehicles on Britain’s roads. “One thing that remains constant though, whether customers are buying a product for an ICE vehicle or for an EV, is that all our customers are assured the same top-quality products and service from CTEK.” It’s a great read, and I encourage you to do exactly that, along with the rest of this combined issue of Professional Motor Factor. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer, embrace it, and I’ll catch-up with you in September.

GSF Car Parts President and COO, Mark Eburne, said: “We’ve been delighted with the way the rebrand has gone and it’s fantastic to finally draw the curtain on this period of transition. City, Wigan, Wirral and Yeovil. NGK Spark Plug to change name NGK Spark Plug has revealed that its English language company name will change to ‘Niterra’, coming into effect in April 2023, but NGK and NTK brands will remain for the company’s respective businesses. Niterra is a coined word, which combines the Latin words ‘niteo’ meaning ‘shine’ and ‘terra/earth’. It expresses NGK’s desire to be a company that “not only contributes to a sustainable society, but also one that makes the earth shine: a goal formulated in the company’s 2040 Vision”. While synonymous with spark plugs, NGK Spark Plug said it had achieved
significant success in other departments, such as sensors and technical ceramics. Considering the company’s sustainable business objectives, including mobility, medical, environment, energy and communications, as well as the forecasted shift away from internal combustion engine powertrains, “the name NGK Spark Plug no longer accurately describes the company’s future direction as a whole”. “Niterra is a key milestone in the transformation which we are undergoing,” said President and CEO of NGK Spark Plug Europe GmbH, Regional President EMEA and Corporate Officer of the global
headquarters in Japan, Damien Germès. “In the coming generations, it will be necessary to think even more about sustainability and what is good for the earth. With our new name, we have taken one more step on our journey to become a company that not only is successful, but also provides new value to the world.”
Schaeffler honours global Climate Action Day Schaeffler recognised 2022’s global Climate Action Day and its aim of reducing the negative impact of humanity on the environment – by planting pear trees in the grounds of its UK headquarters in Hereford. Schaeffler has committed to becoming a climate neutral company by 2040, and demonstrated this commitment by engaging with every single member of staff at its 202 sites around the globe in June. Schaeffler Managing Director, Mark Dolloway (far-left), said: “In addition to raising awareness of Climate Action Day, with a shared interactive event designed to inspire passion, engagement and personal responsibility for climate protection among all our employees, Schaeffler AAM UK went one step further. “The Common Pear trees – or pyrus communis – (were) planted as a statement of Schaeffler’s ongoing commitment to the environment as much as for their positive effects, so all that see and benefit from them in the years to come will remember how seriously we take our environmental responsibilities. They are also a link to Herefordshire’s traditional orchard fruit heritage that will hopefully provide some edible rewards in the future!”

Back-to-back Porsche Carrera Cup GB wins for Comline Comline Richardson Racing and title partner, Comline Auto Parts, were victorious for the second successive weekend in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB following a dominant win by Will Martin in the opening race at Oulton Park. Will was in a class of his own; starting from the front row, he took the lead from polesitter, Kiern Jewiss, before the race was temporarily halted to clear debris and damage from incidents behind him. Upon the restart, he surged clear and took the chequered flag by more than five seconds – setting the fastest lap in the process and breaking the lap record too. By contrast, Jack Bartholomew endured a tough first race; he sustained damage after starting 10th and was embroiled in the opening melee. He managed to nurse the car home to finish 13th. In race two, starting fifth, Will drove a solid race. Due to the narrow confines of the Oulton Park track, he was unable to find space and take advantage of the strong pace he had in the car to move through the field – he finished in the place he started. Fortune didn’t favour Jack in race two either, as contact at the hairpin on lap 12 dropped him down from 12th to 16th place, which is where he finished. Leaving Oulton Park, Comline Richardson Racing leads the entrants’ championship, while, in the drivers’
standings, Will is just three points off top spot and Jack is seventh. Comline General Manager – Marketing & Communications, Leigh Davies, said: “It was another terrific weekend for the Comline Richardson Racing team and the Comline brand. Will was in fantastic form; he showed searing pace all weekend and
fully-deserved his victory. As for Jack, we know he’ll bounce back stronger! “Seeing the Comline brand on top of the podium once again is something we’re becoming accustomed to – let’s keep the momentum going and hope for more success next time!”

Klarius has announced the appointment of Mark Raines, its new associate marketing director. With a proven track record in industrial and retail markets, both in the UK and abroad, Mark will provide “strategic support in further driving forward the company’s diversification and expansion”. He said: “I am thrilled to join the Klarius team at such an exciting time for the business. The expansion and growth that the group is experiencing is fantastic, and I’m very pleased to be able to get involved with the company’s success in both new and existing markets.” Mark started his career in 2005, spending the first six years working as a salesman in industrial consumables, before moving into a marketing role for the same business. In 2014 he joined Bosch Power Tool Accessories in Switzerland, where he worked with a team of product managers, development engineers and key account managers looking after a globally sold, multi-million Euro portfolio. After building strategic experience and involving himself in market research, competitor analysis and user experience projects, Mark returned to the UK in 2020 as head of marketing at C.K Tools.

Original equipment (OE) manufacturer and system supplier, HELLA, has appointed experienced aftermarket professional, Ian Boyle, to the position of sales and marketing director for its aftermarket division in the UK and Ireland. Ian brings considerable sales and product knowledge to the role having spent 11 years at First Line, progressing to UK sales director, and previously 12 years at Quinton Hazell in a product management capacity. Ian said: “My role at HELLA combines the knowledge and experience gained over my career in the aftermarket in both product and sales environments. “For me, the personal love of cars has always been the main driver in my ongoing enthusiasm for the industry, but it’s my ability to analyse and understand trends in order to help customers identify opportunities, that allows me and my
colleagues to put it to practical use. “Joining one of the big global players is a very exciting opportunity, as HELLA offers an insight into the future of the aftermarket through its focus on new technologies developed and supplied as OE to vehicle manufacturers around the world and, subsequently, its ability to support the independent service and repair sector over the long-term.”

EVs and ICEs: CTEK urges industry to consider ‘both sides of the coin’
CTEK Global Aftermarket Division and Product Manager, Gary Brown, takes on our questions and offers us a comprehensive insight into CTEK’s strategy after announcing major investment in a new team and infrastructure:
Q
CTEK has expanded its UK team, to “bring local focus and unrivalled expertise to the provision of electric vehicle charging solutions” – how big a step is this for CTEK? Gary Brown (GB): “The expansion of our UK team is a highly significant step for CTEK. “We have made a substantial investment in both people and infrastructure in the UK, in order to expand and cement our presence in the fastgrowing EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) market, alongside our continued provision of 12V and 24V charging equipment to our UK customers. “The UK is expected to see rapid growth in EV sales over the next eight years, growing at around 30% per annum. And by 2030, when the government’s ban on sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles takes effect, the UK is expected to be the largest market in Europe. “As such, the UK market presents a tremendous opportunity in terms of growth and demand for EV charging solutions, and
I
12 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JULY/AUGUST 2022
that’s why we have made this investment.”
Q
Training, maintenance, sales, marketing and technical support all fall under this development – a huge task awaits the team? GB: “We do not see this so much as a huge task, but more as a huge opportunity. “We have established a multi-disciplined 12 strong UK team, which goes so much further than simply having a regionally based sales force in place. And for us, that’s vitally important. “At CTEK, we are focused on providing complete vehicle charging solutions, regardless of the type of vehicle. And to support this, we need to have a multiskilled team in place. “We have five new sales managers with a sole focus on EVSE, with sales manager, Mark Poole, focused on the aftermarket. Then, our dedicated three-strong Skillbase team provides external and in-house training on all CTEK’s products and solutions, both ICE and EV, with our
support alliances and partnerships manager, Stewart Allen, and our technical and marketing team, also working across our entire product portfolio. “Our experienced staff work with and support customers right through the process. For EVSE specifically, this includes helping to scope and plan an installation based on customers’ needs and expectations, advice on the government grants available, assistance during the commissioning process and full technical after-sales support.
012_PMF_JUL22_Layout 1 08/07/2022 11:10 Page 13
PEOPLE & INDUSTRY
“It’s not just a case of selling EV charging units; it’s about helping the people we work with – be that a motor factor, a professional workshop, an installer or a property owner – to understand the requirements of this fast-changing market and keep on top of the latest developments. “We also provide advice and training on all aspects of EV charging, including choosing the right equipment, best practices, integration with third-party software, as well as other aspects that customers may not have considered; for example, how motor factors can specify an EV charging solution that not only works for their customers’ current needs, but also has the capacity to be expanded, should the need arise in the future, and how load balancing can reduce strain on the grid and avoid hefty grid connection costs. “There is certainly a lot to do, but CTEK is not new to the EVSE market. We are backed by 25 years’ experience in traditional vehicle charging technology and more than 10 years’ experience in EVSE. Over the past two years, we’ve expanded EV sales from our home market in Scandinavia and are now operational throughout Europe, with new bases and customers in France, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as the UK. “For EVSE installations of all sizes, from a single socket at a business premises to 1,000 charge points at a 100% EV parking garage in Hagastaden, Stockholm – one of the biggest EV installations in any parking facility in the whole of Europe – CTEK has, as they say, “been there, done that and got the T shirt!” We are certainly the experts to talk to!”
Q
CTEK also announced a partnership with Rotronics – how does change the dynamic? GB: “CTEK has a long and successful relationship with Rotronics for our 12V and 24V products and solutions, so it was a natural next step to partner with the company for EVSE as well. “This partnership will ensure we can fulfil orders for EVSE in the UK quickly and efficiently, to meet growing demand from UK customers. Rotronics is providing a dedicated warehousing, fulfilment, and distribution operation for CTEK’s electric vehicle charging products and solutions. It holds stock of our products at its West Midlands base, looks after order processing and manages UK distribution. But not only that, its highly skilled team has also been fully trained to configure CTEK’s Chargestorm Connected 2 EV chargers to
customers’ specifications. “We know it can deliver, and we are really pleased that Rotronics is now an integral part of our supply chain for the provision of EVSE in the UK. “However, this doesn’t change the dynamic for the aftermarket in terms of the way it works with CTEK in the UK.”
Q
How does this announcement affect CTEK’s focus on battery chargers for ICE vehicles? GB: “This announcement doesn’t change CTEK’s focus on battery chargers for ICE vehicles at all. “CTEK develops products and solutions to meet the needs of the vehicle charging market as a whole - and as long as the market requires charging solutions for ICE vehicles, CTEK will continue to supply them. “We have a highly successful distribution chain in the UK, with CTEK colleagues supporting all aspects of our business, so it’s business as usual. Our team is here to ensure we can support our customers, and, in turn, their customers, with their vehicle charging requirements, whatever they may be. “Within the automotive sector, we are seeing more and more synergies between our EVSE and 12/24V solutions, especially when we consider that even an EV still has
INTERVIEW
a reduced size 12V battery! In an EV, the 12V battery keeps accessories, like heating, air conditioning and computerised systems functioning efficiently - but in a hybrid vehicle, it is actually the 12V battery that starts the car. As such, it is important to keep this 12V battery charged and in best health, in the same way a motorist would for the battery on a traditional ICE vehicle. “It’s also important, of course, that motor factors and professional workshops consider both sides of the coin, as an increasing number of customers will be looking to buy products for both ICE and EVs, as we see a gradual but sustained change in the type of vehicles on Britain’s roads. “One thing that remains constant though, whether customers are buying a product for an ICE vehicle or for an EV, is that all our customers are assured the same top-quality products and service from CTEK. “We remain firmly at the forefront of global vehicle charging solutions and are also proud of our deep commitment to reducing the impact of motoring on the environment. As well as the development of EVSE, our smart, technologically advanced battery chargers and maintainers, that can extend the life of 12V and 24V batteries by up to three times, also deliver environmental benefits by reducing wastage.”

Is there anything else CTEK wants to share with PMF readers? GB: “CTEK has recently reached a significant milestone – our 25th anniversary! During this time, CTEK’s bold vision, keen Swedish entrepreneurship and focus on technological innovation has seen us launch several world product firsts and win a raft of prestigious awards. “CTEK launched its first ‘smart’ battery charger 25 years ago, a pioneering development that literally changed the battery charging landscape, setting new standards for charging technology. Waeco: Joining OESAA a proud moment Back in March, the Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) welcomed air conditioning (AC) specialist, Waeco, to its organisation. Waeco’s territory sales manager for workshop equipment, Andrew Bastable, has called the group’s determination to prioritise education in the automotive aftermarket “refreshing”.

aeco boasts more than four decades of AC engineering and manufacturing prowess, delivering systems and consumables suitable for passenger, truck, bus, agricultural and construction vehicle markets. Andrew said Waeco’s expertise is invaluable to vehicle manufacturers (VMs) and sprinkling that know-how into the aftermarket is equally crucial. Utilising OESAA, therefore, suits Waeco, as it can collaborate with other members to create powerful and informative content that will support professionals, particularly as electric vehicles (EVs) trickle through to the aftermarket. Andrew commented: “There are some fantastic brands within the organisation, and putting Waeco alongside the likes of Schaeffler, Brembo and DENSO is a proud moment. “We want to educate at both motor

factor and workshop level, and I believe there’s an incredible need for that knowledge to be shared. We’re already working with DENSO and Hayley Pells, a member of the OESAA garage forum, to educate the marketplace, raising the awareness of using the correct oils, the importance of flushing a vehicle and using the correct parts. “There’s a huge opportunity in the AC market, with monumental changes happening in the sector, so having the backing of OESAA to help push these messages through the supply chain will help build confidence.”

Andrew believes AC systems have, traditionally, been labelled as an “easy fix”, but that is all set to change; the days of simply using PAG 46 or universal compressor oil, then recharging the
refrigerant during a service, are numbered. He argued: “Focusing on EVs and hybrids, it’s vital that moisture is removed from the AC system. That is why correct, specific compressor oil must always be used when replacing old oil from the vehicle whilst servicing the AC system. Always bearing in mind that the correct refrigerant and vacuum is carried out on the system as per any AC service. “However, the most commonly seen AC service format from technicians is to unscrew a bottle of compressor oil, pour it into a plastic bottle on their AC service unit, then allow that moisture to go back through the system. Because the oil has been exposed to moisture through the atmosphere, thus, undoing all their hard work, technicians need to understand the consequences of this format with future vehicles, along with the right specification of oil!” The moisture issue got Waeco thinking; it now provides a patented Profi Oil canister, and these have laminated bags inside them – Andrew expanded: “There is no way of allowing any exposure of moisture into the system. These canisters click onto the machines. We produce them in 150ml and 500ml bottles for manufacturers. “We’re able to reuse that oil too; previously, once the oil seal was open, air and moisture would mix in with the oil and would likely be redundant in less than three days. Oil used after that has the potential to cause severe damage to the vehicle and also the AC service unit – we’ve seen a huge increase relating to electric compressor failures.”

Working with factors and technicians to offer solutions Determined to share these nuggets with distributors and workshops alike, Andrew said: “Motor factors (in particular) will have the opportunity to educate and expand on the potential that lies ahead for the present and future garages to come within AC and thermal management systems. “There’s a selection of AC compressor oils that are pushing through into the marketplace. VMs are bringing out their own, individual compressor oils, such as SPA2 (VAG) and ND-11 (Tesla) – are motor factors picking the correct oil for the customer?”
Still focused on internal combustion engines (ICEs) All of Waeco’s AC machines come with the ability to add on a flush kit to the bottle, so they are able to jump between EV and ICE powertrains. It completes an internal threeflush cycle and removes any potential dangers of cross contamination. Andrew added: “That flexibility allows technicians to look at vehicles that are 10years-old and cars that will be filtering
through into the aftermarket over the next few years. We also sell hybrid flush kits. “It’s crucial that workshops are prepared for now and the future. Working with OESAA will help Waeco convey the aforementioned messages. From revenue opportunities to upskilling staff, AC has a buoyant future.” For more information about OESAA, www.rdr.link/FFL002

INTERVIEW
‘Innovation is in the DNA of our company’, says UFI Filters In the first part of our wide-ranging interview with UFI Filters Sales Director UK and Ireland, Karl Ridings, he responds to our questions, which focus on strategy, how the company is handling volatile market conditions and MOT proposals:
Q
Karl, thank you for taking the time to talk to us – what is UFI Filters’ main focus right now? Karl Ridings (KR): “We have several focuses right now: one being the recently introduced range of heavy duty filters to the UK and Ireland. For passenger cars and light vehicles, we have enjoyed tremendous growth in the last five years, even during the pandemic. For UFI, it’s very important to maintain the service level our customers expect, in terms of availability, sales support and customer service, but also the continued growth with existing and new customers. “Being a company with a strong original equipment (OE) pedigree does not simply mean that we are OE suppliers, it also

demonstrates that we have specific technologies and expertise, such as our inhouse production of the filter materials that make up the media of our filters. “To this end, the company has developed six different recipes – ‘FormulaUFI’ – which cover the entire range of filtration: fuel, air, oil, passenger compartment and hydraulics. These can be customised according to the needs of individual applications, to meet the requirements of the most important manufacturers. Indeed, innovation is in the DNA of our company. This has allowed us to develop new technologies, underlined by, to date, more than 280 patents. “UFI Filters Group continues to build its OE range, thus laying the foundations for

the further implementation and enrichment of our aftermarket offer. Our distributors can always count on the OE pedigree of our products. The aftermarket filter programme incorporates our OE filters and our philosophy of already meeting tomorrow’s demands, today.”
INTERVIEW
Part two of Karl’s interview, which includes how UFI Filters is beating the counterfeiters, will run in September’s edition.
Q
The COVID-19 pandemic and, most recently, crisis in Ukraine has caused disruption in many ways – how is UFI Filters faring, particularly with the UK’s aftermarket division expanding only in 2019? KR: “The team also expanded in 2021 and 2022, adding additions to customer services, warehouse operatives and salespeople. The pandemic gave us many challenges, but we chose to stay fully operational with all of our staff during this time, ensuring our customers knew that they had their usual full sales and customer services support. “We offered some additional customer support in the hardest times of 2020, with additional payment and discount terms and introduced a brand-new email marketing campaign, to keep our customers up-todate on new products and company news.
“Brexit also provided some additional challenges, such as port delays, but prior to that, we took the opportunity to take on additional stock coverage. In my opinion, having been operating now in the UK for only five years (we launched in March 2017), we are ‘faring’ extremely well and looking forward to the exciting future that UFI Filters has in the UK and Ireland.”
Q
Under UK government proposals, the MOT could be extended to two years – what does UFI Filters think about that? KR: “Firstly, what is important is that the market understands the need to follow the
recommended service period of the vehicles. Relating to the MOT being extended, my opinion is that the aftermarket fought for this to be scrapped for many years and thankfully was successful. To keep our roads safe and to identify potentially dangerous cars on our roads, I believe it should not be extended to two years. It is important to make sure that vehicles are functioning correctly in order to prevent the wear and guarantee a longer lifetime of the vehicle.” For more information about UFI Filters, www.rdr.link/FFL003

Shaftec’s warranty and credit control under the microscope Continuing our interviews with Shaftec, in this combined issue we’d like to introduce Kirsty Slater in credit control and Aidan Vellender, who is the warranty lead – let’s kick-off with him:
Q
Welcome, Aidan! Tell me about your day-to-day role? Aidan Vellender (AV): “Thorough investigation makes for a long claim process – thankfully, we get few! Once the part is back, re-engineering begins. I deal with our technicians and keep customers informed. Alongside this, I issue goods inspection and corrective action reports to ensure stock is correct and rebuilt to our standards.”
empt situations and prevent them becoming real issues. This allows us to proactively react and organise inspections and corrective actions, with minimal disruption.”
Q
If you could sum up Shaftec in one sentence, what would it be? AV: “Growing, adapting and reacting to the automotive sector to keep ahead.”
Q
What are the most frequent warranty claims? AV: “Few claims are testament to our quality processes, supported by operating under one roof. Of the few we do get, ‘leaking’ items top the list, but it’s usually due to unions not being refreshed on the pipes or a fitting issue, such as overtightening.”
Q
What warranty processes are in place? AV: “We offer two types: quibble (labour fee requested from garage) or no quibble (no labour fee requested from garage), along with newly increased warranty periods on our products, which reflect the quality of them and the workmanship we offer to our aftermarket customers.”
Q
What are the most common reasons for a ‘defect’ product? AV: “We have a very low failure rate, and returns are usually due to a handling/fitting error. A ‘defect’ product is usually down to electrical faults or coding issues where customers are unable/don’t have the correct equipment to remove error codes or code racks ready for use on the car. This is an area of opportunity for the independent aftermarket. If they can’t deal with recoding in-house and must enlist the help of the main dealer, it adds cost to the customer and may be the deal breaker in securing return business.”
Q
How can Shaftec guarantee quality within its product? AV: “Keeping abreast of industry trends, I’m able to work closely with my team to pre-

Kirsty, tell me about your day-today role. Kirsty Slater (KS): “No two days are the same! I raise daily credits, process paperwork and answer queries. I also help the sales team with ongoing stock orders or cleanses.”
Q
As a team leader, what responsibilities do you have? KS: “Making sure all queries from both customers and colleagues from other departments at Shaftec are answered and resolved.”
Q
As a stock profiler, what methods do you use to ensure accuracy and efficiency? KS: “At Shaftec we assist customers with stock profiling and forecasting, allowing a
more accurate ordering process. A dedicated programme collates the customers’ current stock levels, so we can advise on what they should purchase and what they should return for credit.”
Q
What’s the most important aspect of your role? KS: “Improving efficiency and ensuring the correct credits are processed in a timely manner.”

Carwood: Bosch distribution deal gives factors more choice Carwood Deputy Managing Director, Simon Quantrell, explains why the remanufacturer’s relationship with Bosch is a natural, long-term fit – for both the company and its customers:
T
here’s no doubt that sales of diesel and petrol-powered cars have suffered in the wake of the emissions scandal, growing consumer acceptance of their electric counterparts and looming regulatory changes. Yet they are, and will be, an important part of the powertrain mix for all but a few automakers for many years to come. Indeed, by 2030, forecasts suggest that 80% of the UK vehicle parc will still be powered by some form of internal combustion engine (ICE), be it petrol, diesel or a hybrid combination. When you factor in the average age of a car on the road – currently 8.4 years – coupled with the fact that diesel registrations were at an all-time high not that long ago, it’s clear that there will still be a significant parc of ICE equipped vehicles, even when new legislation is introduced in 2030.
An important service opportunity Of course, these vehicles will all require expert servicing for at least the next couple of decades, meaning that ICE will be an equally important part of the aftermarket mix for a long time too. It’s also why Carwood is continuing to invest in its evergrowing fuel systems business, most recently becoming a Bosch distributor for the UK and Ireland. As an official distributor, we now stock and distribute a full programme of Bosch fuel pumps, injectors and spare parts for diesel and petrol vehicles, including Bosch

new, Bosch eXchange and repair components. Together with Carwood’s existing lineup of authorised solutions, diagnostic tools, test equipment and technical support, you can now access everything you need to service more than 23 million vehicles equipped with a Bosch injection system – over 60% of the UK parc – from just one supplier. This will save time, money and the inconvenience of ordering from multiple sources.
Offering more choice Although remanufacturing will remain a core part of our business, the addition of a full Bosch line-up means that you will now have more choice – a choice of where to buy from and what to offer customers. With Bosch new, eXchange and repair solutions, on top of Carwood’s own original equipment (OE) approved remanufactured range, you can offer a choice, tailored to
your customer’s needs; for example, a new OE unit, a more cost and eco-friendly exchange unit, or the spare parts for a more economical repair. The latter the preferred option for older diesel vehicles, where maintenance costs are often disproportionately high compared to their value. With OE parts, equipment and knowhow, you can now access everything you need to take advantage of an exciting service opportunity, direct from one company: Carwood. TALK OF THE TRADE
We’ve picked some of the most intriguing stories from the June edition of Professional Motor Mechanic, which featured Comline Auto Parts (Comline), Garage Equipment Association, European Exhaust and Catalyst (EEC), along with a product test.
Comline wrote of its dedication to steering and suspension, which has intensified with a free poster for workshops: “Focusing on the latest technical poster, Comline has revealed that the lower wishbone bush bolts on the Land Rover Discovery III, IV and Range Rover Sport (2005-2012) often become corroded, making them difficult to remove. This makes lower wishbones (CCA1263L, CCA2263R, CCA1405L and CCA2405R) tough to replace. The bolts are usually destroyed when removed. “Comline now provides the answer with a fitting kit (CSK7000K), which comprises of all the necessary add-ons with the new wishbones – two camber bolts and camber washers, two washers, four nuts, one strut mounting bolt and one driveshaft nut – for a straightforward replacement. “The bulletin, along with the aforementioned information, is a segment of a wider strategy and campaign to highlight Comline’s steering and suspension prowess and is the perfect complement to the growing product range.”
EEC offered some guidance when it comes to replacing and installing exhausts: “The key function of the exhaust system is to reduce noise. The correct exhaust system is tuned to the vehicle’s engine characteristics to ensure noise levels and resonance are kept to a minimum. An exhaust can become ‘noisy’ as the system deteriorates through corrosion, generally manifesting in porosity of the muffler or tubular parts of the exhaust system or a general breakdown of muffler internals. Porosity in any part of the exhaust system can have a detrimental effect on the effectiveness of the catalytic converter. “What happens if the back pressure is low? When the exhaust system has a lower back pressure (holes, degraded internals), the gases will escape faster from the combustion chamber during the exhaust stroke. During the overlap time, the burnt gases will flow easily and faster through the exhaust system. Because of this, a small part of the new airfuel mixture entering the chamber, via the intake valve as a result unburnt fuel, will escape into the cat and exhaust. This will cause damage to monolith within catalytic converter.”

INSIDE THE ISSUE
The Garage Equipment Association’s Chief Executive, Julian Woods, chatted with PMM Editor, Kieran Nee. Julian had his say on the problems facing the supply of garage equipment and, specifically, was asked if rising prices were being passed onto independent workshops: “Inevitably, yes, the cost will go to the end user. But if you buy in the UK from a European supplier, if you try to bring that into the UK, you’re then liable for that product. So you can’t just buy it cheaply from Europe and ship it in because you still then become liable. So there’s no advantage in doing that. “Most members are trying their best not to put the price up on
equipment. Obviously, the equipment market is a very competitive market. But inevitably, costs are starting to creep up because of the added import costs and the complications involved. But where possible, they are trying to keep the costs down to a bare minimum. “Fortunately, the general feedback is that the supply issue is easing. It’s not as bad as it was, but it is still quite bad. Certain products still have extremely long lead times, but most manufacturers now pipe that into their supply line. So they’re aware that if it’s a 16-week lead time for certain parts, they can now get over that and work as best as they can.”
Des Davies put Traction Charger’s CSU2-50B battery support unit through its paces: “On taking delivery of this unit I could see that it was well constructed, easy to use and looked solid. “These are original equipment manufacturerapproved by the following manufacturers: Ford, Nissan, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover. All of these products are either made or sourced in the UK, which reduces the carbon footprint. The battery cable leads are approximately 2.7m long and the input supply cable is approximately 5m long, and these proved to be very generous lengths and helped with connecting vehicles with hard-to-access battery locations. They are also of a good build quality. “This CSU2-50B unit can be used with any 12V automotive battery, including AGM, GEL and LiFeP04, which was very adaptable across a big range of batteries. The status of this BSU unit is indicated by three LEDs: POWER, POLARITY and DEMAND.”

BEAT THE DEALER
Borg & Beck turbo hoses in at Marathon Turbo hoses have traditionally been ‘dealer-only’ components, according to First Line Ltd; however, its Borg & Beck agreement with Marathon Warehouse Distribution means the wholesaler can now offer you these parts.
P
ressing emissions standards in vehicle manufacturing have resulted in smaller engines going into today’s passenger cars. Often though, to make up for the loss in power delivered by a smaller engine, the horsepower is topped up with a turbocharger. As the use of turbos become more ubiquitous, so do the parts associated with fitment and operation such as turbo hoses. The hose needs to withstand severe heat and be constructed to prevent splits and defects, which will cause the turbo to rev higher, and, ultimately, fail sooner. Turbo defects will also result in a drop in performance, increased emissions, and can cause the vehicle to fall into ‘limp home’ mode.
The range The Borg & Beck portfolio covers more than 680 references, including air filter, emission control, intercooler and turbo hoses. What’s more, the range features original equipment (OE) connectors, is manufactured with materials to ensure performance and longevity, and it is supplemented by a range of more than 35 hose clips. When it comes to turbo hose product identification, it is difficult to explain which hose is required; therefore, helpfully, there is a Borg & Beck technical layout drawing for every reference. First Line Ltd. Global Marketing Director, Jon Roughley, said: “It’s often overlooked how important it is to check the condition of the turbo hose and replace where necessary, especially when replacing a turbo, to maintain optimum performance, whilst ensuring longevity of the components. “Traditionally considered a dealer only product, we provide the aftermarket an extensive range of high-end turbo hoses. Our products use OE manufacturer materials and connectors, with a thorough testing regime throughout the various stages of manufacturing to give the aftermarket the best product possible.” Marathon Director of Marketing, Adrian McComas, added: “Turbo hoses have

EXHAUSTS & EMISSIONS
‘Lubricant formulations have had to evolve to meet new challenges’ The strive for lower emissions has driven significant development in lubricant technology, according to Mike Bewsey, chairman of the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS):
contributing to kinematic viscosity, are essential in all multigrade oils, as lubricants are formulated to provide excellent wear protection and fuel efficiency.
T
he drive to reduce emissions has had a significant impact on engine development. To meet government requirements for reduced emissions and consumer needs for economy and performance, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have developed smaller engines that run at higher temperatures to maximise efficiency, power output and fuel economy. Lubricant formulations for passenger cars, vans and trucks have had to evolve to meet these new challenges to provide the lubrication required in these high-stress conditions, with uncompromised engine and emission control systems protection over even longer drain intervals; for example, OEM requirements for lubricants to deliver fuel economy via reduced frictional losses have led to a general reduction in the viscosity of both light-duty and heavy-duty engine oils. Careful evaluation of lubricant shear stability is essential to ensure lower viscosity oils offer sufficient protection. This is defined in the lubricant specification. Viscosity modifiers with a chemistry and architecture that can deliver the correct shear stability, while
Apparent in latest ACEA sequences
These developments are evident in the latest ACEA sequences, which identify relevant performance standards for lubricants specifically tailored to the European market. The ACEA 2022 sequence update for heavy-duty engines raises anti-oxidation performance and piston deposit control with pass levels for the new OM 471 test in ACEA E4 and ACEA E8 more severe than those previously set. According to Paul van de Heijning, cochairman of the Industry Liason Committee for the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry: “The new OM 471 engine tests set a new industry standard in terms of engine test severity and test duration of one month. This increased piston cleanliness performance is needed to cope with the significantly higher operating temperatures of the latest Euro VI HD engines using SCR systems, driven by Euro VI [nitrous oxide] emission legislation in combination with extended oil drain intervals.” But all this change to engine and lubricant technology is happening on the back of a shifting vehicle parc. Whilst fleet operators and drivers are under pressure
to adopt lower emission technologies, the vehicle parc itself is ageing as motorists and hauliers hold on to their vehicles for longer than ever. Despite increased registrations in recent years, alternatively powered vehicles still remain only a small part of the market. As an independent trade body, VLS is working with lubricant manufacturers, distributors, motor factors, mechanics, and motorists alike to ensure lubricants are marketed and used correctly in this changing market. If an engine oil sounds too good to be true or you have any concerns about it being mis-sold or mislabelled it is vital to double-check. Poor quality or incorrect engine oil can cause accelerated wear or damage emission control devices, such as particulate filters, leading to increased emissions, maintenance costs and, if left unchecked, eventual engine failure. The Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) is an independent trade body that provides a credible and trusted means to verify lubricant specifications, bring transparency to the lubricant marketplace, and protect and educate end users. You can report a product if you have concerns to VLS, who will independently investigate it to confirm if it really can deliver what it claims. For more information about VLS, www.rdr.link/FFL008

EXHAUSTS & EMISSIONS
‘Smart consolidation of lambda sensors offers benefits’, says DENSO DENSO Pan EU Strategic Marketing Manager, Fatiha Laauich, explains why DENSO’s lambda sensor range is optimised for smart consolidation, thus maximising benefits without incurring negative impacts:
T
he aftermarket has always been tremendously adept at evolving to remain competitive in a business landscape driven by fast-changing technology. Workshops demonstrate this daily, with an ever-growing diagnostic knowledge and ability to carry out repairs using the right tools and methods. To offer this full-service package to their customers, they rely on wholesalers to supply them with the correct parts. Thanks to continual advancements by parts manufacturers, there is a trend for wholesalers to stock a smaller, but just as widely applicable, range of parts, enabling them to meet their customers’ needs while reducing their overheads. However, the challenge for the wholesaler comes in working out how far it can reduce its stock without compromising its offering to workshops, or inadvertently introducing issues with fitting or efficacy. That’s where the DENSO concept of ‘smart consolidation’ comes in: merging
I
30 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JULY/AUGUST 2022
products in a range to just enough for wholesalers and workshops to benefit, but not too much that they experience problems.
Lambda sensors: an optimised offering One group of components where smart consolidation is already at work is lambda sensors, as some manufacturers have identified these parts as a target for range consolidation – and with their variety of wire lengths and fit types, it is easy to see why. Lambda sensors are a crucial component, not only for optimising engine performance, but also for reducing emissions – something the entire industry knows to be important in the context of global governments’ climate goals; therefore, their performance cannot be compromised. However, by taking a group of 10 different original equipment sensors, which all share an identical sensor core, connector type and pinout – the only
difference being the length of their wires – DENSO has put smart consolidation into practice by selecting only three optimised wire lengths, thereby greatly improving the stock efficiency of servicing all the related vehicles. As a result, wholesalers can provide workshops with maximum vehicle coverage without having to buy a prohibitive amount of stock. Having fewer parts, therefore, makes the lives of wholesalers easier and supplying the right parts that result in efficient and error-free fitting will reflect well on them from their customer’s perspective.
Be smart… The DENSO lambda sensor range is optimised for smart consolidation: maximising benefits without incurring negative impacts. Not only do the sensors themselves match strict quality standards, but the segmentation of the range also confers the maximum possible benefits to wholesalers, calculated across the entire life cycle of a product from purchase to installation to use, while maximising vehicle reliability.

EXHAUSTS & EMISSIONS When is a saving not a saving?
Consequently, the question could be whether it’s possible to take the concept further and reduce the range all the way down to one cable? In theory, yes, but reduce the range too much, and the constraints start to outweigh the benefits. In the case of the example in the diagram, the longest possible length would mean an excessive wire length that needs to be secured with cable ties; however, with high temperatures, fast rotating parts and heavy vibrations, wire harness fixation is a
safety and reliability issue that DENSO will not compromise on. In general, depending on the actual wire length, DENSO does not allow the wire to be more than 35% over length. The most extreme version of consolidation is universal fit sensors. Such sensors will always require additional preparation time by cutting the wires to length and splicing them onto the original wire and connector. When done correctly, with the right tools, materials and methods, this provides a perfectly reliable result. Preparing the sensor will significantly extend the installation time. Additionally, there are many ways that a
less experienced technician could make a mistake, such as confusing any of the four wire connections, or using a wrong method of connection (soldering instead of mechanical crimp), the wrong equipment or insufficient sealing. If any of these occur, obviously the sensor will not work properly, which will be noticeable in the car’s driveability and fuel consumption. ‘Fight for quality braking mirrors emissions battle to uphold standards’, says BM Cats BM Catalysts, highlighting its own fight over emissions compliance, has called for greater enforcement following the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) report into UNECE 90 Regulations.
T
he DVSA’s market surveillance unit found that three out of eight braking brands tested failed to comply with UNECE 90 Regulations and Toby Massey, managing director of BM Catalysts, has seen parallels with the company’s fight to uphold standards: “We welcome the DVSA’s continued market surveillance activity. It’s a complex process, but it’s essential that we maintain standards and ensure attention to detail over the rules in place.” The UK manufacturer and exporter of catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and front pipes, has been campaigning for compliance within the industry for a number of years. It has also been trying to educate on the complexities of type approval legislation against the “volatile prices” of platinum group metals used in the production of catalytic converters, which “could see quality ■ Meanwhile, BM Catalysts has expanded its offering by adding selective catalyst reduction (SCR) references to its range. To coincide with the launch, the manufacturer has also produced some useful point of sale content, including a technical poster, which goes in depth about SCR technology and its effectiveness in reducing vehicle emissions. SCRs work with diesel exhaust fluids (DEF), such as AdBlue, and can reduce a vehicle’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 90%, according to BM Catalysts, while also reducing hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions. The technology has become commonplace to treat emissions from

standards within the market taking a backseat in a bid to offset costs”. Catalytic converters and DPFs that require homologation go through a type approval process before being legal for sale. Toby added: “While the process of type approval is complex, the message from DVSA is consistent in that everyone in the diesel engines over 1.6l, following the introduction of Euro VI emissions standards in 2015, which cut permitted NOx emissions by more than 50%. Mark Blinston, commercial director at BM Catalysts, said: “The demand for SCR systems within the automotive industry is set to rise, as many Euro VI emissions vehicles feature this technology and will now be entering the aftermarket; therefore, it’s important that the industry has access to this product group in order to continue to service the vehicle parc. “As a company, we are always looking ahead and will continue to invest in our extensive product development programme to further support the aftermarket.”
supply chain needs to make every effort to adhere to the regulation on the supply and fit of compliant products. “This issue won’t go away, and we’ll continue to work with distributors and workshops to ensure the automotive aftermarket supply chain is better informed over type approval legislation and the important role they can play in its enforcement, for the benefit of the entire sector.” For more information about BM Catalysts, www.rdr.link/FFL011

SMP Europe gets technical: exhaust gas temperature sensors explained Exhaust gas temperature sensors (EGTS) are becoming more popular in modern vehicles due to tougher emissions legislation, according to SMP Europe. Here, its engineering director, John Wass, delves deeper into what the sensor does, its key components, why it’s a high-failure part and how it fails: What is an EGTS? An EGTS measures the temperature of the gas in the exhaust system. This information is then reported back to the ECU where appropriate action can be taken. Commonly in petrol engines, the sensors protect key components from higher temperatures common in smaller engines. In diesel engines, meanwhile, EGTS are also used to monitor the temperature of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to maximise efficiency of regeneration and reduce harmful emissions. It is common to have three or more sensors fitted to the same exhaust system, one before the turbocharger and one either side of the DPF.
Why does an EGTS fail? Commonly, EGTS failure is caused by exposure to extremely high temperature – in some cases, over 900°C. As with many components, particularly sensors, sever vibrations can loosen internal connections and bending/twisting can cause wire failure. Combining these with contamination from fluids, such as oil or antifreeze, can affect the EGTS response efficiency, causing it to drift out of tolerance and provide the ECU with inaccurate information. Symptoms of failure include the engine light appearing on the dashboard, a reduced fuel efficiency, unnecessary DPF regeneration, a failed emissions test or component failure.
SMP Europe’s range of EGTS With more than 300 part numbers available, we constantly monitor the aftermarket to update our offering to ensure customers remain up-to-date and have the parts they need for every repair. All of our EGTS are developed with the latest in sensory technology and tested rigorously in house at our testing facility in Nottingham, to ensure they meet or exceed original equipment tolerances and can withstand the harsh working environment they are situated in for a long service life.
How does an EGTS work? There are two types of EGTS: with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensing elements. The difference between the two is how they measure temperature: 쎲 PTC element sensors are the most common, where resistance increases in line with temperature 쎲 NTC elements have a high resistance at low temperature and low resistance at high temperature In both cases, a temperature is assigned to resistance in the engine control unit (ECU), allowing it to act based on the feedback.

Klarius price rises ‘kept to a minimum’ To combat price rises to the aftermarket, Klarius has relied on its UK stock of exhaust systems, components and accessories; however, as well-reported, the continuing rises in global energy costs are now being compounded by direct sanctions on trade with Russia, which is also pushing up raw materials costs for the manufacturing industry. This means price rises are set to continue – but are being kept to a minimum: “
C
onflict has translated into energy and raw material supply issues, which is causing price rises across all markets,” said Klarius CEO, Mark Brickhill. “For industries particularly reliant on energy, like steel, this has caused an exponential rise in prices. As we use highquality steel and aluminium to produce our type-approved aftermarket exhausts, we are directly affected, which means we are raising prices, but only by a small proportion compared to the energy and commodity markets.”
Strong position
Klarius said its position as a UK manufacturer has allowed it to absorb the worst of commodity price rises. Less reliant
“At our Staffordshire manufacturing base, we have extensive warehouse capacity, holding over 130,000 items ready for immediate dispatch. The complete range covers over 11,000 parts and provides solutions for over 24 million vehicles on UK roads,” said James Ellison, sales director at Klarius. Stock levels for both popular and niche components are maintained through demand driven manufacturing – in short, they are topped up as needed. This ensures total availability across the entire range and the same short lead times for every part – whether you’re after an exhaust for a modern Renault or
an old Saab! Klarius possesses exhausts, catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters and bespoke mountings available to fit vehicles of almost any make, model and age. Next day delivery times are possible thanks to the company’s in-house logistics operation, AutoLogistiks. It can distribute stock to customer facilities nationwide, thanks to a dedicated van fleet.
Regular new-to-range updates This range of aftermarket exhausts is constantly growing too. Klarius is continually introducing new components for the latest models, sometimes on a daily basis, with a handy list of new to range parts released every month. All products are developed and tested in-house, with every applicable part independently type-approved with the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) in the UK and the TÜV in Europe. Doug Bentley, head of research and development at Klarius, said: “Rigorous quality standards mean that every part in range matches or exceeds the performance levels of the original equipment manufacturers’ item. All Klarius products (are) available with a two-year warranty and a fit first time guarantee as standard. Our customers not only get speed and choice, but exceptional quality too.”

Nissens Automotive introduces exhaust gas recirculation coolers Perhaps best known for its popular air conditioning range, Nissens Automotive continues to add to its portfolio. This allows its wholesale customers to provide independent workshops and professional installers with replacement part solutions.
N
issens Automotive has developed its offering to encompass three product groups: climate, engine cooling, and efficiency and emissions. In common with its ongoing development strategy across all its sectors, the company continues to establish a solid footprint within the green automotive systems sector, which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of the internal combustion engine (ICE). Nissens Automotive’s efficiency and emissions product group consists of intercoolers, turbochargers, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves and modules, and now, EGR coolers. This means that wholesalers supplying Nissens Automotive products can now benefit from being able to source a comprehensive range of EGR parts solutions from a single supplier. Nissens Automotive Efficiency and Emissions Product Category Manager, Christian Germain Rosendahl, said: “While the car manufacturers strive to limit the impact that the ICE has on the environment, the aftermarket has the opportunity to mirror this policy when it comes to the replacement parts it supplies to independents. “There is, therefore, an obvious need for reliable components that conform to the correct specification and continue to allow these vehicles to emit the level of emissions to which their engines are designed. “As a result, Nissens Automotive continues to strengthen its position as a leading supplier, with the ongoing aim of assisting technicians to successfully service and repair these vehicles and by providing them with a wide range of premium quality components to allow them to do so.”

material improvements that contribute to their high thermal performance and overall durability. A further benefit for wholesalers comes in the form of the company’s ‘first fit’ concept, which, in common with every component in the Nissens Automotive range, means that whenever extra parts are needed for the EGR coolers’ correct installation, these are automatically included in the box, making them easy to install, as well as saving professional installers time and effort. Sara Høegh Nyholm, the quality engineer responsible for the product extension, said: “During their production, we utilise only the industry’s highest-rated stainless steel and thoroughly test all the critical functions and the calibration of their inner mechanisms. “We also methodically examine the thermal performance of each part, simulating the typical working conditions they are under with the very high temperatures and pressures of the exhaust gases. “As a result, these EGR coolers are premium aftermarket products that replicate the performance and fitment of the original equipment (OE) component to provide an extended, trouble-free function in the harsh conditions resulting from the frequent temperature and pressure fluctuations within the exhaust system.” For more information about Nissens Automotive, www.rdr.link/FFL014

aerosols. This is achieved by a unique, progressive multi-layer design that effectively filters, captures and suppresses harmful environmental gases, as well as inorganic and biological particles and aerosols. Corteco said the fine particle filtration layers in the micronAir blue filters offer protection against virus transmission and, demonstrably, separate not only droplets but also critical viral aerosols.
Comprehensively tested
The first two layers of the micronAir blue filter can trap approximately 90% of viral aerosols. Corteco said this has been conclusively proven by a comprehensive series of tests at an independent facility, specialised in microbiological analysis. In addition, the fourth bio-functional layer inactivates collected viral contaminants, thus, suppressing the release of active viruses back into the cabin air.
Corteco reported that the high particulate and viral aerosol filtration performance will significantly reduce the concentration of airborne viral aerosols. This way, micronAir blue cabin air filters make a “substantial contribution” to minimising the risk of virus transmission inside vehicles.

MAHLE Aftermarket General Manager, Andy Lees, explained: “Modern service intervals can be long, which means they require filtration that goes the distance. Recommended service intervals are set by manufacturers after extensive research in all operating conditions to help to ensure maximum performance of the vehicle, reducing the chance of component
failure and protecting drivers. “This means replacing the filters during a service at the recommended interval will result in a significant improvement in engine response, along with improved economy. This is a direct result of changing filtration at the recommended interval.”

Comline underlines importance of cabin air filter replacement during servicing Did you know that a sneeze at 60mph can render a driver blind for 30m? That sneeze could be a sign that the cabin air filter needs replacing. Comline Auto Parts (Comline) is urging your trade customers to replace a cabin air filter during routine servicing to ensure they give their customers the best and healthiest service.
Like its ever-growing steering and suspension portfolio, Comline is continuing apace with its growth in the filtration sector; the brand said its product team remain committed to carefully filling gaps in the market where demand is clear. The brand currently boasts a library of more than 1,800 filtration references and recently brought a plethora of new part numbers to market:
T
echnicians should know the importance of a cabin air filter; it protects the inhabitants of the vehicle from harmful contaminants, but, unfortunately, it can be overlooked during a service. Allergens, odours, dust mites, pollen, toxic fumes and dirt are all potential, nasty threats – just 1m3 of air contains 10-80 billion particles, according to Comline, many of which are contaminants – but the brand can help stop, prevent and protect against airborne pollutants with its range of cabin air filters. Comline prefers activated carbon cabin air filters; these offer “outstanding protection” thanks to an additional layer of media within the part. These remove microcontaminants, typically toxic gases, like Benzine or Ozone, and filter out unpleasant smells to keep the cabin fresh.

REMANUFACTURING
‘Little recognition for environmentallysustainable remanufacturing option’ Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick Hood, reveals why the remanufacturer chose the practice back in 1986, how the process has evolved and what the future may look like: Hi Nick, thanks for talking to PMF about remanufacturing – why did Autoelectro decide to go down this route when it was launched in 1986? Nick Hood (NH): “Back in the mid 1980s, there were significant factors that supported remanufacturing: firstly, the vehicle parc was more consolidated on common components, in alternator and starter motor terms; for example, what fit a Cortina also fit a Sierra, Granada, Capri, Transit and so on. Back in those days, using a Ford 2.0 Pinto engine, as an example, it could be found in nearly all of Ford’s vehicle offering, which meant that old units were readily available and the economies for remanufacturing were good: low inventory, wide vehicle parc coverage. “I think another defining factor was that new replacements were more expensive; there were no low-cost options available, so original equipment (OE) was the only

I

real new option and, typically, this was two to three times more expensive than remanufactured products. Of course, the technology was, by today’s standards, reasonably basic so remanufacturing offered the most cost-effective solution.”
charging. “The benefit to the customer is still fundamentally the same; however, what has changed is the huge influx of new copy product available in the market and the varying qualities of those units.”
Has remanufacturing evolved and to the benefit of the customer? NH: “For Autoelectro the principles of remanufacturing remain the same: fully dismantle and rebuild the unit with the replacement of all wear components. What has changed significantly is part number proliferation, so there is no longer a Ford Pinto unit being used in six or more Ford vehicles – more like six or more alternator options for a Ford Focus! For the remanufacturer, this has created a far more complex process, coupled with changing technology to support a vehicle that has much greater requirements for starting and
Q
Q
Do customers seek Autoelectro because of its remanufacturing pedigree? NH: “The one thing that hasn’t changed between 1986 and present day is the customer is looking for the best deal and, naturally, price plays a part in that, but you can’t buy luxury for pennies, and people understand that because they can see the difference. It’s not so easy when judging a starter motor! “Of course, there is a huge irony here, which is that as we are all becoming more environmentally aware, a point highlighted by the desired move by the government to
042_PMF_JUL22_Layout 1 07/07/2022 13:29 Page 43
REMANUFACTURING
switch to electric vehicles: remanufacturing is environmentally sustainable; however, there is little recognition of this point when it comes to replacement vehicle parts. The government is doing nothing to acknowledge this opportunity.”
Q
On your point about “little recognition”, do you therefore worry about the future of remanufacturing? NH: “No, quite the opposite, as the increasing complexity and more model specific starter motors and alternators produced creates a situation where, for a growing number of applications, the
replacement opportunity is low, and this situation lends itself to remanufacture. “Also, I believe that the low recognition by the government and the general public is a timing issue. If you are not aware or have not given thought to this, how can you start to change your behaviour? Some European countries already acknowledge the environmental importance of remanufactured or used/reclaimed replacement parts and have legislated to support this practice.”
Q
How has the continued pressures on availability and the new car market
influenced remanufacturing? NH: “There is some associated effect, particularly with component manufacturing and pandemic issues continuing in Southeast Asia. Autoelectro, as a UK-based remanufacturer, has control over its manufacture and product availability, and our sales in 2022 have been very good, coupled with people retaining vehicles for longer. This has resulted in more opportunities to secure that remanufactured starter motor or alternator sale.” For more information about Autoelectro, www.rdr.link/FFL019

In addition, the continued rising cost of living in the UK means that for many, the prospect of a staycation has, once again, become their main option for a getaway in 2022. As a result, pet travel is likely to be a hot topic this summer and owners will need to be prepared. The Highway Code states that “when in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained, so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars”. For pet owners who are constantly in and out of their car, or regularly drive somewhere to take their dog for a walk, the new SS5490 (pictured) is a two-in-one dog lead and seat belt strap that covers both pursuits. Featuring the same harness and universal seat belt clips as the travel strap, once the pet leaves the vehicle the seat belt clip tucks tidily away into a Velcro-secured pouch, turning the strap into a fully adjustable dog lead, allowing safe travel on foot. These two new leads join Sakura’s best-selling dog guard range, which comprise multiple products to suit all vehicles, all of which can all be fitted without the need for tools. The SS5260 universal dog guard is fully adjustable to cover the full height and width of the vehicle and features four vertical bars to allow good visibility of the dog in the boot, whilst stopping them crossing over to the back seats. The SS5259 mesh dog guard clips directly behind the rear headrests, is fully adjustable in width, and comes with three different fittings to ensure a snug fit in all vehicles. Meanwhile, the SS5453 SUV guard is shaped specifically with SUV interiors in mind and, once again, secures to the headrests and is fully adjustable in width.

CONTINUOUS EXPANSION
ROTATING ELECTRICS EXPANSION
Apec has ‘sparked’ excitement with the launch of starter motors and alternators. The announcement sees Apec enhance its range of non-braking components with a selection of rotating electrics: “Rotating electrics have to operate under extreme pressures during the winter months,” said a spokesperson for the Apec product team. “They must be able to handle the demands that the colder weather brings, and Apec starter motors and alternators are designed with reliability and quality in mind.” Every Apec starter motor and alternator is subject to a testing process, and, as a result, the range is backed with a three-year/36,000 mile warranty guarantee. What's New? VERSATILE RANGE
While families may be gearing up for their holidays, Comline Auto Parts (Comline) isn’t taking it easy, with the award-winning British brand releasing a host of hubs and bearings for popular family models. Comline reported that these undergo tremendous amounts of testing to guarantee consistent performance, with the range encompassing a variety of design styles – from two-piece ‘generation 0’ to ‘generation 2 and 3’ variants – and arriving at the workshop as a complete kit, thus, containing all the needed accessories. The Ford Kuga II (2012-onwards), Kuga III (2019-onwards), Volvo XC60 I (2009-2017), Toyota C-HR (2016-onwards) and Honda CR-V all feature in the latest bulletin. What’s more, Comline has increased the amount of hub assemblies for light commercial vehicles too, like the Volkswagen (VW) Crafter (2016onwards). Land Rover Range Rover, Peugeot, Kia, Citroën, Nissan, VW, Jaguar, Hyundai, Vauxhall/Opel all feature in the latest raft of wheel bearing part numbers, demonstrating Comline’s versatility in bringing new references to aftermarket professionals. Comline has also bolstered its brake caliper and filtration
ranges, with the latter including air, fuel and oil filter additions. Every brake caliper is manufactured from either cast iron or lightweight aluminium, with the portfolio also including electronic park brake applications. Meanwhile, with 25 years’ experience, Comline has its finger on the pulse when it comes to filters. WWW.RDR.LINK/FFL030
MARINE AND LEISURE BATTERIES
Exide Technologies has expanded its Marine & Leisure Equipment Li-Ion range with six new batteries, which covers most applications within the marine and leisure market. This includes boats, caravans and motorhomes, and all offer “strong levels of safety, performance and a prolonged lifespan”. One of the ‘smart features’ is an intelligent heating function; users will no longer need to remove the battery from its original source and store it in a warm location until it’s heated up sufficiently before recharging. Instead, even if the temperature dips as low as -20°C, the battery will heat itself and automatically recharge once the temperature reaches 0°C. This also keeps the overall recharge time short: from -20°C and with just 10% of power, the battery will take just four hours (one hour of heating) to complete a standard recharge. The Bluetooth function runs parallel with Exide’s expanding digital strategy. By downloading the Exide-exclusive ‘M&L Li-Ion Monitor’ app, users will have complete control of either one or multiple batteries’ key features and performance levels, particularly helpful if batteries are installed in difficult-to-reach places.
