Beginning a new year with added resilience First and foremost, let me wish you a Happy New Year! I hope you’ve returned to work recharged and prepared for another busy 12 months. As always, I’m actually writing this before the Big Man squeezes down the chimney and Big Ben rings its chimes to signal the start of another year – but that’s between me, you and our 4,000 readers! I’m writing this at the conclusion of the traditional year-end event, the IAAF Conference and Awards. Once again, this was hosted at Stadium MK, the home of Milton Keynes Dons. And, once again, it was well choreographed by the supporting staff and hosted by the organisation’s CEO, Mark Field – he was particularly chipper, but I suspect that was down to yet another victory for his beloved Aston Villa! More than 250 delegates were due to appear at the conference, while more were crammed into the hall for the grand dinner and awards. Greeted by cheerful Christmas carol singers, I walked into the conference and got down to business. The line-up featured conference veterans, Neil Pattemore and Quentin Le Hetet, while there were some new faces, all of whom stuck to their task and batted away any tough questions that came their way. The theme this year – ‘The Brilliance of Resilience’ – was summed up beautifully by keynote speaker, Claire Lomas MBE. She has overcome adversity and turned her life around, showing what can be achieved with the right attitude and approach, following an accident in 2007 that left her paralysed from the chest down. In 2012, for example, she became the first paralysed person to walk a marathon using an exoskeleton suit – taking 17 days! Motorbike and pilot licences have since followed, while skiing has become one of her favourite hobbies. Her fundraising has taken her to more than £850,000, all in aid of curing paralysis. There were tears in the audience; every single one of the delegates was glued to her every word. I could’ve listened to her all day. Inspiring, motivating, moving and fascinating all in one hit. Her resilience is a positive message to all of us: I came away ready to take on the world and question why the things I moan about are even a bone of contention. An extraordinary person – her books are on my shopping list, that’s for sure! I congratulate the IAAF for such a brilliant booking. As I reflect on Claire’s speech and story, I am ready to take on 2024 by storm, and I hope you’ll join me on that journey. Of course, there’ll be bumps on the road, but, as illustrated, a positive mindset, a resilience, can go a long way. Have a great January.

Can you tell us about Q HiLeisureways and its transformation? “Leisureways of Rotherham was acquired by Autosupplies Group in 2019. It has been turned into an automotive state-of the art superstore, to house growing ranges of leading aftermarket products and brands. “Our most recent refurbishment delivers an increased stockholding capability, new retail area, office facilities and improved facilities for the 25 members of staff at Rotherham. “Autosupplies Group has been gradually improving the premises since we took over in 2019, but due to increased retail and trade business, we took the decision to completely refurbish the entire building, which boasts an

impressive selection of parts, paints, refinish products, tools and accessories. “The total in-store transformation is now complete with further improvements being made externally including new signage. “It has taken a lot of time and effort to get to where we are today, and the efforts of its branch manager, Tom Clarke, and the wider team have paid off. Retail sales have increased by more than 50% since the new store was unveiled. The majority of products in-store are now priced up, and we are also seeing an uplift in trade sales. “Leisureways is part of the Autosupplies Group, which comprises Butlers Automotive of Barnsley and Autosupplies Chesterfield. We employ more than 200 staff and have over 100 vans, serving customers across Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.”

After a renovation of the Leisureways of Rotherham branch, David Clarke, Autosupplies Group’s managing director, took time out of his schedule to answer questions about the transformation and bring us up-to-speed with other developments within the organisation: Leisureways has been Q Given around for four decades, how important was it that the history and loyal customer base were respected during the renovation? “With all our businesses, we take time to see how they develop organically under our ownership and then look at the opportunities to invest and make them better. The transformation of Leisureways has been substantial, and the investment underlines our commitment to both the Rotherham area and automotive industry. “Leisureways used to be a sports brand and was originally opened by Sebastian Coe who lived in the area, so it was important for us to ensure the transition was as seamless as possible and respect the history of the brand name.

would you summarise life as Q aHow motor factor at present? “Our three biggest challenges are A recruitment, price increases and stock availability. The latter is probably less of an issue, as we have invested so heavily in putting in ranges across our three sites. Our pick rate is at least 9/10, which is market leading. “Recruitment and training of motor factor staff is where we’re going to place a bigger emphasis next year and hopefully work closer with our trade association, IAAF, in training parts people. We have great teams across all three businesses, are one of the largest employers in the region and offer varied roles – we hope to share our expertise with other liked minded people in the aftermarket.” What trends/challenges are you Q observing at present? “The entire aftermarket supply A chain has faced challenges, including rising price of parts, utilities and people. We try and work with our customers to support them with passing on these increases to motorists. “We now have two or three suppliers on a product group to ensure choice and availability is there, and we pride ourselves on our pick rate. “With these changing requirements and evolving customer base, our future is all about our people, the team. We must ensure employees are fully trained and our recruitment process is the best it can be. “We can’t hide from the electrification of vehicles and new powertrains entering the market; we invest heavily in our brands, products, staff and technology to ensure we are well-equipped to meet the needs of the future.” For more information about Autosupplies Group, www.rdr.link/FAB001

INTERVIEW

RS Automotive Core: Its green initiative and revealing the growing role of core in the aftermarket Throughout last year, we brought you brands aplenty that champion remanufacturing. It’s a practice that looks to give previously discarded parts a new lease of life, only replacing parts that absolutely need to be – but where is the core sourced from? RS Automotive Core is one such company that buys and sells used vehicle parts – our editor, Tom Henman, caught-up with one of the two owners, Ryan Webster, Finance and Operations Director, Robyn Webster, alongside Managing Director, Alastair Whatmore:

I

not just about making a profit; it’s “ t’sabout protecting the environment through recycling and sustainability. We want to keep as many parts as possible out of landfill,” began Ryan when quizzed on RS Automotive Core’s aims and objectives. RS Automotive Core is a ‘core dealer’ with more than one million units stocked in various locations across the UK with a total of 90,000sqft of warehouse space. These locations are ready to supply both domestically and internationally. It employs

I

14 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2024

an open-door policy, meaning customers can pay its site a face-to-face visit and buy off the shelf, send a requirement list to the company’s dedicated ‘customer relationship’ team or, vice-versa, ask the team to send a list of parts in stock. Keeping that large number of units in stock means locating stock from a vast number of places, which must be a challenge, right? Ryan responded: “It’s always a challenge finding new sources of core, but we are fortunate that our supplier base continues to grow, and we believe this will continue.”

Taking a punt! At this point, Alastair joined the conversation. Before joining RS Automotive Core, he was the joint owner and managing director of Autostores Motor Factors. The factor was a multi-branch site based in Worcestershire and the Southwest. For more than 15 years, the company enjoyed “considerable growth” before being sold to Alliance Automotive Group in August 2019. During this time, Alastair was also the chairman of the Parts Distribution Partnership – or PDP as it is better known – and oversaw an increase in purchases from suppliers of over 250%, alongside a considerable growth in members of the buying group.

PEOPLE & INDUSTRY

INTERVIEW

“A massive pool of motor factors”

Alastair began: “Remanufacturers supply lists of part numbers they need to replenish their stock, and they will purchase from core dealers who have the best availability and price. A core dealer has to take a bigger punt than most other suppliers in the aftermarket due to the core supply not being on a contracted basis. “We pride ourselves on our team of experts; they have great technical knowledge of market movements and have the tools in place to track lost sales and future market trends.”

“Recyclers first and foremost” Alastair, clearly experienced, has many long-standing industry relationships. He is well-placed to offer a perspective in terms of how the automotive aftermarket operates and potentially will evolve. He continued: “I believe that core dealers will progressively gain significance in terms of the growth in remanufacturing. A discernible shift is occurring, driven by the challenges imposed by COVID, such as escalating

transport costs and availability of products. The market felt a commercial strain at that time, and this has shown us that competitively-priced products that are remanufactured closer to the UK has to be a benefit to all. “In this landscape, if a remanufacturer can consistently deliver a high-quality, easily accessible, and competitively priced product, I anticipate that this specific market segment is poised for substantial growth.” Robyn added: “There is also the environmental benefit; this is important to us and our team. We are proactive in adapting our processes in how we source core to make sure that as many parts as possible are remanufactured. “The environmental aspect is also important to our customers; they want to illustrate their credentials to their own customers and showcase the importance of remanufacturing and recycling.” Ryan then made the point: “We are recyclers first and foremost; we consider ourselves to be a valuable element of the remanufacturing process.”

Alastair said joining RS Automotive Core made complete sense with his background and expertise within the supplier and motor factor market: “There are motor factors around the country that are selling products to a workshop that could attract a surcharge – that’s it, sale over! “Nowadays, though, there are more and more motor factors that are recognising that if they put a modest surcharge on a new unit, for any product that could have a surcharge value, there is an additional margin to earn. This is where a relationship with us is beneficial; we will buy those returned units, which will be remanufactured, and offer additional revenue for the factor.” Ryan added: “Many motor factors don’t like the idea of a surcharge; we’re trying to market it as a green incentive. This is an opportunity for factors to be more environmentally active whilst enhancing margin. “We can confirm that those motor factors that have started to embrace this philosophy of introducing a small surcharge have seen absolutely no reduction in sales, as their garage customers also like the idea of being part of this sustainable initiative.” Alastair came back in: “We are seeing a consistent trend to the benefit of factors: for every £1 million worth of turnover for a factor, we are typically purchasing £6,000 to £9,000 of core. We are giving them opportunities to earn more revenue, while giving products a second chance, so it’s a win-win for them.”

Conclusion With over a million units in stock and an expansive warehouse space ready to meet both domestic and international demands, RS Automotive Core’s dedication to recycling and reducing environmental impact is commendable. The company, under the leadership of Ryan, Sonny Wymer, Robyn and Alastair, anticipates a promising future. They recognise their increasing significance in the remanufacturing landscape. By fostering strong relationships with motor factors and promoting a green incentive over traditional surcharges, RS Automotive Core believes its business model not only generates revenue but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable future for the automotive industry. TRENDS

Duckhams Oils vows to support the industry – whatever the powertrain! Duckhams Oils, a brand that has been around since 1899, is likely to have plenty of experience in adapting to changing markets. Jabir Sheth, its chairman, delves into the ICE-ban delay and its likely effects:

A

ccording to a What Car? survey of inmarket car buyers, nearly two-thirds of UK drivers (60.1%) were in favour of the UK government’s decision to push back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles to 2035. Their reasons varied from concerns over the lack of charging infrastructure to the cost of EVs, range fears and those who simply prefer driving petrol or diesel vehicles. EVs are generally more expensive to buy than petrol or diesel vehicles. Cheaper running costs are expected to offset these higher upfront costs, but higher insurance, the end of the vehicle excise duty exemption from April 2025 and soaring electricity costs may narrow the gap. The sector is making good progress regarding workshops for EVs, but data from IMI reported a potential shortfall of 16,000 qualified technicians by 2032.

ICE vehicles are likely to be around for many years after 2035 Drivers and fleet operators are holding onto their vehicles longer than ever before. According to the latest ACEA Vehicles in Use 2023 report, passenger cars are now, on average, 12 years old in the European Union, vans 12 years, trucks 14.2 years and buses 12.7 years – a marked rise since 2018, when cars were, on average, 10.5 years old, vans 10.5 years old, and trucks and buses 11.7 years old.

“Whilst alternatively powered vehicles are increasing their share of new car sales, petrol was still the most popular choice for new registrations in the EU in September 2023, with petrol and diesel accounting for 46.8% of all registrations. Diesel continues to dominate new truck registrations and is still the most popular choice for new van registrations. These vehicles will still be on the roads by 2035 and beyond.” Catering to the diverse and ageing vehicles on our roads, since 1899, Duckhams Oils has been offering highperformance engine oils formulated to keep engines of all ages moving. Improved reliability and the cost-of-living crisis means motorists are in no rush to switch to EVs. Whilst alternatively powered vehicles are increasing their share of new car sales, petrol was still the most popular choice for new registrations in the EU in September 2023, with petrol and diesel accounting for 46.8% of all registrations. Diesel continues to dominate new truck registrations and is still the most popular choice for new van registrations. These vehicles will still be on the roads by 2035 and beyond.

Duckhams under the microscope Alexander Duckham founded Duckhams in 1899, and his entrepreneurial, pioneering spirit has been at the heart of the company ever since. Over 100 years ago, Duckhams developed new process oils that controlled the build-up of carbon deposits. In 1951, Duckhams was responsible for the introduction of Europe’s first multi-grade oil, an innovation which transformed lubrication technology forever. Duckhams has always strived to blend innovation with quality to create products that make movement frictionless. It will continue to innovate and support motor factors, technicians and motorists alike – whatever the future vehicle parc requirement, be that petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles. Duckhams QS & QXR synthetic engine oils, for example, are formulated with modern additive technology and high-quality base oils to meet current specifications and provide advanced protection for modern passenger cars. Hypergrade Plus engine oils are formulated to meet the requirements of older vehicles and provide complete protection.

BATTERIES & IGNITION

Niterra UK backs NGK products for seasonal peaks Navigating the intricacies of seasonal demand in the automotive industry, particularly during winter, can be a formidable challenge. Niterra UK emphasises the critical role of quality diesel ignition products, like glow plugs and ignition coils, especially in the face of sub-zero temperatures affecting over 17.3 million diesel cars in the UK.

T

he ability to hold the right stock at the right time is vital – and never more tough than during the winter months when the cold weather can cause a surge in workshop demand that might not have much advance notice. With our changeable weather in different parts of the country even, you also have to navigate there being high demand in some areas but not others, making projecting trends and supply difficult. One product area where this is particularly true is for diesel ignition products, according to Niterra UK, where component performance can be tested – and fail – with the advent of sub-zero temperatures. There are more than 17.3 million diesel cars on the UK’s roads facing this exact challenge, so it is crucial that you provide trade customers with accurate application coverage and technology needed to take advantage of the seasonal service opportunities, such as glow plugs and ignition coils. Niterra UK advised to not compromise when it comes to stocking quality ignition solutions, even when navigating seasonal

peaks. Choosing a component on lowest price alone rather than performance often means a greater possibility of premature failure, poor vehicle running, and an increase in returning faults leading to disgruntled repairers, the supplier claimed. NGK glow plugs meet cold weather conditions “head on” while boasting more than 70% market coverage, renowned for their cold start performance and efficiency optimisation. NGK ignition coils also feature the “very best” quality production methods, selection of premium materials, strict quality processes to ensure long life. As an OEM supplier to many VMs, Niterra UK is confident its NGK products have a strong reputation, with the OE fitment benefiting end-users, and you can leverage this technology for your aftermarket customers. Niterra UK Marketing Manager, Becca Knight, said: “We work closely with our distributors, so they have the correct stock levels geared to UK car parc and the flexibility required to deal with the increase in seasonal demand. “The factors who will serve their

customers the best this winter season are the ones who can combine the right technologies with responsiveness, and the coverage from our NGK portfolio will allow motor factors to maximise those revenue opportunities. “Many part numbers are brought into the aftermarket from the OE side of our business, meaning factors have the highest quality aftermarket solution for popular applications. Vehicle owners can be confident that their engines are fitted with components which meet or exceed VMs’ specifications, and the resulting customer satisfaction is good news for the garages that fit the parts and the distributors who supply them.”

BATTERIES & IGNITION

Ecobat Battery emphasises stock control best practice While its message to workshops is to test the battery of every vehicle that enters the premises, Ecobat Battery’s advice to you centres around ensuring you have enough battery stock – and how to best protect that investment! Its training manager, Christopher Jones, tells us more:

A

lthough demand has naturally dropped since the flood of sales following the end of the pandemic lockdowns and returned to more seasonal norms, as has been demonstrated by the unseasonably cold weather in late November and early December, it is wise for you to carry a reasonable battery stock to be able to react to such opportunities. However, it’s equally as important to ensure that the batteries you supply are in good condition and ready to be used.

How to store them It might sound completely obvious, but all batteries, whether traditional lead acid SLI

(starter/lights/ignition), EFB, AGM, Gel – or even lithium – should be stored upright, in a well ventilated and dry storage area, with an average temperature of around 15°C, which also has the facilities

I

24 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2024

to charge them. In addition, try to keep them on shelves rather than standing on a concrete floor, but if the floor is the only option, sit them on a wooden pallet, not directly on the ground. This is not because it will in anyway affect the rate of discharge, it is simply a sensible precaution to prevent damage to the plastic case from any debris that might be on the floor, that could possibly crack it and cause the electrolyte to leak out. To manage stock well, it’s useful to understand some of the battery basics, such as the fact that each one contains six, nominally 2V cells, which when they are fully charged hold 2.11V and 1.95V when completely discharged, so the operational window is actually very narrow, between 12.7V for a fully charged battery and 12.4V, at which point it needs to be charged as soon as possible, because

prolonged periods at this level of discharge will causes damage due to a chemical reaction called sulphation. Even when disconnected, a typical SLI battery will self-discharge at the rate of 0.1V per month, which means that a fully charged battery will be discharged to the point that it would struggle to start an engine (11.8V), in just nine months! So, to minimise this phenomenon, make sure they are fully charged when first stored, keep them clean, cover the positive terminal, and check the voltage every eight to 12 weeks. Should the voltage drop to 12.5V or below, fully recharge them immediately.

Effective stock control This also includes rotating stock to make sure that the oldest battery of its type is sold first. So, another best practice principle is to nominate someone within the business to generally look after the battery stock and test, and if necessary, recharge them, as well as order replacements, whenever stock levels become low. Before despatch to the customer, one final check to ensure the battery’s state of

024_PMF_JAN24_Layout 1 19/12/2023 02:04 Page 25

BATTERIES & IGNITION charge (SOC) is above 12.5V is required, because, obviously, your reputation would be severely undermined should a discharged battery be delivered. However, it is not necessary to check its state of health (SOH); in fact, to do so is likely to be misleading due to the fact that replacement batteries manufactured in Europe are not ‘fully formed’, which is a piece of battery terminology that needs to be explained. Fitting a fully charged, but yet to be fully formed battery, is the best way to maximise its lifespan and performance. Being used and charged in situ helps with the battery’s overall endurance, as it goes through its final forming process over several weeks of cycles (charge, discharge, charge), during its use.

Availability vital Naturally, when it comes to restocking, or should you urgently need a battery type that is not normally on the shelf, as the UK’s largest independent automotive battery distributor, supplying the likes of Exide, VARTA, Lucas and Numax, Ecobat Battery is ready and willing to provide the solution.

However, in addition to its ability to supply the batteries needed, when customers require them, the company is also able to supplement this discipline with other support functions, including highlighting the environmental responsibilities that affect both workshops and wholesalers. This is a role that Ecobat Battery, through its associated group companies, can provide further practical help with, through scrap battery collection and recycling.

Underpinning the Ecobat Battery sales team is a 13-stong national branch network across the UK and Ireland, which means that as well as outstanding knowledge and service, customers also benefit from excellent availability of the industry’s most prominent brands. BATTERIES & IGNITION

In 1996, DENSO developed the car industry’s first, compact stick type ignition coil, which is currently the most common ignition coil seen in the aftermarket, but the story of ignition coils started long before then, as DENSO Pan European Strategic Marketing Manager, Fatiha Laauich, reveals:

DENSO highlights the evolution of the ignition coil I

n today’s low emission and highefficiency engines, the key to effective combustion is consistent, high-energy ignition output. The high voltage required for this ignition, generally between 10 and 40kVs is provided by the ignition coil, which is a type of transformer that features primary and secondary coils of wire wrapped in layers around an iron core. The role of the ignition coil is to transform the nominal 12V in a car’s battery into the thousands of volts that are required by the spark plug to generate the sparks needed to ignite the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber, but where did it begin?

Introducing the Kettering system Although ignition systems have certainly evolved over time, particularly as they incorporate evermore electronics, they still bear the hallmarks of the original coil ignition systems that were introduced more than 100 years ago.

I

26 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2024

The first coil based ignition system is credited to American inventor, Charles Kettering (top-right), who developed it for a major VM in 1910, by devising an electrical system that powered the starter motor and ignition at the same time. The battery, a generator and a more complete vehicle electrical system provided a relatively stable electrical supply to the ignition coil. Amazingly, this became virtually the only type of ignition system for petrol fuelled engines until electronically switched and controlled ignition systems started to replace

mechanical systems, during the 1970s and 1980s. The Kettering system used a single ignition coil to produce a high voltage, which was passed to a rotor arm that effectively pointed the voltage to a series of electrical contacts located in the distributor assembly – one contact for each cylinder – and then connected to the spark plugs with wires in a sequence that made it possible to distribute the high voltage, in the correct cylinder firing order. Following the introduction of the first electronic ignition systems, another

BATTERIES & IGNITION

significant step came at the beginning of the ‘80s with the development of the ECU. With its arrival, instead of the high voltage for the spark being controlled by a mechanical rotation inside the distributor assembly, the ECU, using additional and more accurate engine operating information, such as crankshaft position and speed provided by various sensors, could dictate when this voltage should turn on or off. Over time, demand for higher engine speeds and higher spark voltages resulted in the introduction of the distributor-less

ignition system (DIS). This uses one ignition coil for each pair of cylinders and is completely controlled by the ECU, delivering high voltage directly from ignition coils fitted with an integrated igniter to the spark plugs. Then, in the ‘90s, came single DIS and coil on plug (COP) ignition coils. These are directly mounted onto the spark plugs, followed by the single ignition stick coil, which is still the type that is used on most modern applications today.

DENSO champions OE quality Although the quality of OE coils is very high, in common with many automotive components, over

time they do deteriorate and must be replaced, but workshops considering fitting anything other than an OE quality replacement should consider the important role they play, as without a fully functioning coil, the engine would simply not perform correctly. DENSO offers the aftermarket sector a range of OE quality ignition coils, which encompasses block, distributor, stick and COP types. It is, therefore, able to cater for the needs of many applications. For more information about DENSO, www.rdr.link/FAB014

Comline unravels the mystery of ‘brake crazing’

While technicians need to stay up-to-speed with the latest best practice techniques when it comes to repair and diagnosis, Comline Auto Parts believe it’s equally important that you stay informed of the latest developments, terminology and procedures, to offer the best service to your customers. With a wealth of knowledge in this area, Comline’s renowned braking expert, Dr Keith Ellis – or Dr Friction as he is affectionately known by – delves into the intriguing phenomenon that is brake disc ‘crazing’:

T

echnicians may have encountered a scenario where they are inspecting a vehicle’s brake disc and notice an unusual pattern on its surface: a cluster of small, hairline cracks resembling ‘orange peeling’ or the appearance of crazy paving. This phenomenon is what experts refer to as brake disc ‘crazing’ – heard of it before (far-right)? These clusters of cracks can vary in size and are particularly noticeable, especially on vehicles with open-style alloy wheels. So, what’s causing it? Essentially, it’s a tell-tale sign that the brake disc has been subjected to high temperatures, indicating that the driver has been

I

28 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2024

pushing their brakes to their limits, quite literally driving their brakes crazy!

Quality assurance It’s crucial to understand that ‘crazing’ is not necessarily indicative of a quality issue with the brand of brake disc chosen for the vehicle. Instead, it’s an occurrence that affects all traditional cast metal brake discs when exposed to high temperatures. The good news is that these cracks are typically superficial and should not pose any serious issues beyond their unsightly appearance. However, we emphasise the importance of a professional mechanic supporting motorists with a thorough

inspection and expert diagnosis, as there are other types of cracks that can occur within a brake disc which might be more serious. Whilst cracks typically associated

with crazing are largely superficial, any crack that appears to go part, or all of the way through the disc, must result in the disc being replaced immediately. Of course, safety always comes first in the world of automotive maintenance, so in the event of doubt, we would strongly recommend the brake disc be changed – that’s where you come in, of course!

The ‘blueing’ effect Sometimes, crazing isn’t the only visual indicator of high braking temperatures. Technicians may also come across the ‘blueing’ of the brake disc surface. This issue manifests as patches of the disc

“It’s crucial to understand that ‘crazing’ is not necessarily indicative of a quality issue with the brand of brake disc chosen for the vehicle. Instead, it’s an occurrence that affects all traditional cast metal brake discs when exposed to high temperatures. The good news is that these cracks are typically superficial and should not pose any serious issues beyond their unsightly appearance.” take on a blue tint, also in response to intense braking temperatures. Notably, it is possible to observe disc blueing without crazing.

Conclusion Understanding brake disc crazing is essential for every aftermarket professional – not just technicians. Our extensive experience in supplying highquality brake discs sheds light on this intriguing issue, reassuring professionals that ‘crazing’ is often a benign problem related to high braking temperatures.

TMD Friction provides best-practice braking tips this winter

The car’s braking system consists of many components, most of them exposed, which makes them susceptible to all kinds of pollution, road grit and moisture – and in the winter, to slush and snow. Here, Scott Irwin MIMI, head of technical training at TMD Friction, explains the impact that winter conditions can have on the functioning of the braking system:

T

his applies to brake pipes and rubber hoses, calipers, ABS rings, as well as brake discs and pads. It is important, therefore, that you have access to the highest quality parts and the technical know-how on best-practice braking tips, to share with your customers. Particular attention should be paid to brake pipes and hoses, both rigid and flexible. Under the influence of slush and snow, old brake fluid with a lot of moisture in the system can be a harmful influence on these parts, as they can start to corrode from inside or outside. To verify a brake hose defect, you should encourage technicians to carefully examine the hoses and their metal terminals for leaks, rust or mechanical

I

30 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2024

damage. The hoses need to be in good technical condition, as they act as the carrier of the brake fluid and are crucial for the proper functioning of the brake system. The operational efficiency of the brake fluid itself can be checked using a special tester, such as TEX1000BFT from Textar, which allows the technician to determine the exact boiling point of the brake fluid. Manufacturers recommend replacing it on average every two years or 60,000 km, whichever comes first. When replacing the brake fluid, we must remember that boiling point is not everything; for proper operation of all systems, such as ABS/ESP, it is not enough that the fluid does not ‘boil.’ It must have the right viscosity, which ensures sufficient fast pressure changes

in the system. It is important to choose not only the DOT classification by number, but also the proper viscosity, such as DOT4 or DOT4LV.

ABS plugs and rings are vulnerable too ABS plugs and rings are another element susceptible to adverse winter conditions. Some replacement plugs do not have factory seals, for example.

“To verify a brake hose defect, you should encourage technicians to carefully examine the hoses and their metal terminals for leaks, rust or mechanical damage. The hoses need to be in good technical condition, as they act as the carrier of the brake fluid and are crucial for the proper functioning of the brake system.” In this case, the most dangerous element is the moisture, which can cause corrosion of electrical connectors. The problem of rust can also apply to calipers, brake pads and discs, which means in all places where moisture gets. The brake pads can corrode together with the guides, which will prevent their free movement during brake operation. The winter period is conducive to these phenomena due to the increased humidity; for example, a characteristic rust coating may appear on the surface of the brake disc. If these are traces, when braking, the

driver will hear the characteristic sound of scraping, similar to that of grinding steel with coarse sandpaper. After a few braking operations, rust will come off and the specific noise will stop. In extreme cases, after a long standstill, corrosion can permanently damage the structure of the disc, so it is important that the technician can access high-quality parts and the owner is advised to drive the car regularly. On the rear axle, the most common fault is the corrosion of the handbrake cables, which, if not used too often, tends to

corrode faster. If the cable has a broken shield, water will get inside it. This causes contamination and progressive corrosion of the cable, especially of its ends, which in conditions of minus temperatures can lead to a blockage. If the water in the cable shield freezes, it may not be possible to release the hand brake in the cold.

How to avoid winter problems First of all, it is recommended to regularly check the brake system’s condition and if necessary to replace individual elements with new ones. From the point of view of the correct operation of the brakes, assembly and maintenance of the system is very important. It should be remembered that the appropriate points should be protected against corrosion with a dedicated ceramic or synthetic grease, depending on the purpose, such as Textar’s Ceratec. It is also worth using VM operating instructions. For more information about TMD Friction, www.rdr.link/FAB016

Product Spotlight

Morris Lubricants launches new antifreeze coolant range As Morris Lubricants unveils a new portfolio to the industry, its technology manager, Adrian Hill, explains the logic behind the creation and the variants now on offer: The developments in petrol, diesel and hybrid engine designs, across a multitude of market sectors, has meant that engine oil formulations have had to follow. As new engine oils have been used to keep these low emission engines efficient, technicians, maintenance engineers and end-users may have overlooked the equal importance of antifreeze coolants. These often-forgotten products, just as engine oils do, need to meet the correct manufacturer specifications to get the optimum performance out of the vehicle.

All-year-round protection Antifreeze coolants are essential fluids for all-year-round protection of the engine, and they have to accomplish many things: they need to keep the engine working at the optimum temperature by controlling heat, but also stop the water in the antifreeze coolant from freezing at low temperatures which can cause damage. Modern engines are made from a multitude of metals and alloys, and it is essential that rusting and corrosion are controlled. Whilst performing this task, the antifreeze coolant must also be compatible with sealants, gaskets, elastomers and hoses. Antifreeze coolants are often sold as a concentrate and are diluted with water before use. Compatibility with hard water is,

therefore, a must to stop ‘furring up’ of the radiator and coolant system, as well as being inert to flux residues left over from the construction of aluminium radiators. Ideally demineralised or distilled water should be used when diluting antifreeze coolants. Up until recently, the antifreeze coolant market has been dominated by traditional blue two-year antifreezes using older inorganic chemistry and five-year red antifreezes that employ newer Organic Acid Technology (OAT). These older products have now fallen into the commodities bracket, as the OEM and global qualifications that these products meet are limited and may even be outdated. Engine designers are now not only specifying increasingly tailored engine oil formulations but are extending their demands to antifreeze coolant formulations.

Products specifications and requirements To accommodate these new requirements, Morris Lubricants has released a new range of antifreeze coolants. These have been formulated to offer refined levels of protection to engines employed across a range of market sectors, including passenger car, LCVs and heavy-duty diesel CVs. The Ultralife antifreeze coolant range covers 169 different engine specifications. This means workshops can have confidence that they are selecting and using the correct antifreeze coolant.
