Reaching the heart of every motor factor I love Christmas; I’m fortunate enough to enjoy time with the family, get tetchy with my children’s grandparents for ignoring pleas to not “overdo it” when it comes to presents and complete the ritual of starting and finishing a bottle of port with my father and brother-in-law. These are my Christmas traditions – and I’m not alone in enjoying these annual rituals, with many automotive suppliers unveiling their yearly seasonal promotions over the last few weeks. For instance, Carwood, the remanufacturing and technical services provider, is getting into the Christmas spirit with a virtual advent calendar, with a Nintendo Switch among some of the headline prizes in its campaign (pg 13) – I thought of entering that one myself! – while the tools and workshop equipment supplier, Sealey, has not just one but two promotions to tell you about (pg 17) in this year-ending edition of Professional Motor Factor. I thought Carwood Deputy Managing Director, Simon Quantrell, summed it up rather well when explaining why the company decided to go down the advent calendar route: “Christmas is a time for giving. We know how tough the past year has been for a lot of people, so we wanted to give a little something back, in a no strings attached, fun way. With promotional offers and no purchase necessary giveaways, designed exclusively for this calendar, there is something for everyone.” What else to look out for in this issue? I’m confident readers will be intrigued and keen to hear IAAF CEO, Mark Field’s thoughts on his first 100 days in office (pg 10), with particular focus on how the association intends to engage with motor factors in the future: “The IAAF should – and will – reach into the heart of every motor factor business, providing tangible benefits. We are looking at numerous ways to significantly enhance our support to motor factors, particularly in the area of skills and training.” I’d like to end my viewpoint by wishing all Professional Motor Factor readers and all industry professionals a very happy Christmas and prosperous new year. I hope 2022 is full of joy and happiness – both personally and professionally! You may have enjoyed a superb 2021, you may have done enough to keep things ticking over, or you may look at 2022 as a great opportunity to put the previous 12 months behind you. Whichever tag suits you, Professional Motor Factor will endeavour to support you and your business with both informative and interesting content, pinning down industry personnel to offer their views on how they’re supporting motor factors. Until January, take care!

NEWS Arnold Clark Autoparts turns 30 Arnold Clark Autoparts has reached three decades of motor factoring in the automotive aftermarket. The award-winning parts distributor, with branches across Scotland, northern England and the Midlands, has recently announced a significant extension to its South Street premises in Glasgow, a key central distribution hub for its branch network. Arnold Clark was originally established in 1954, when Sir Arnold Clark left the RAF and bought a Morris 10/4, and in 1991, Autoparts was established to focus on the sale of aftermarket parts. In 2010, it moved into its South Street distribution centre, which has been extended several times and now holds over 70,000 parts with a stock value of more than £3million. In 2015, Midwest Motor Factors became part of the company adding 80 staff and more than 40 vans across a five-branch network throughout the West Midlands. Arnold Clark Autoparts Group Factor Manager, Craig McCracken, said: “The growth of Arnold Clark Autoparts has been nothing short of phenomenal and the people – customers and team – have helped make this happen. “We’ve had tremendous support along the journey, and we look to continually reward and thank customers for their loyalty. High availability of quality products has also played a major part in our
Automotive data publishers launch a quality label The European Independent Data Publishers Association (ADPA) and its eight European data publisher members have launched a quality label, which, ADPA stated, symbolises their commitment to a continuous use of reliable data sources and processes at European level. ALLDATA Europe GmbH (Germany), Autodata Ltd (UK), HaynesPro (Netherlands), Hella Gutmann Solutions A/S (Denmark), Robert Bosch GmbH (Germany), TecAlliance GmbH (Germany), Tekné Consulting Srl (Italy), and TOPMOTIVE/DVSE GmbH (Germany) are all holders of the ADPA label. “With regard to current and future developments and the everincreasing complexity of vehicle repair and maintenance information, an extremely high-quality standard in terms of data publishing is more important than ever before – and all our members live up to this,” said President of ADPA, Ralf Pelkmann. With the advent of electro-mobility and connected cars in particular, processes to service, maintain and repair vehicles are becoming increasingly complex, claimed ADPA, making it more crucial than ever for workshops to get “state-of-the-art, up-to-date and harmonised repair and maintenance information”. The label is based on requirements, making it possible for automotive data publishers to join the association and obtain the label – if they follow the highest standards in terms of data sourcing, ADPA added in a statement.

success and our future investment plans will see us develop this further.” Craig McCracken will feature in a full-length interview in the January 2022 edition of Professional Motor Factor.
Parts Alliance rebrands as GSF Car Parts The Parts Alliance has rebranded to GSF Car Parts, introducing one trading name across its 170 sites for the first time. GSF Car Parts President and COO, Mark Eburne, said: “This is a milestone moment for our business that marks the beginning of an exciting journey. “Operating nationally as one brand for the first time enables us to streamline more of our processes and to implement improvements across the business more quickly and efficiently. This rebrand precedes an exciting period of investment in stock, staff, innovative technology and a larger UK footprint.” Following the rebrand, The Parts Alliance will revert back to its role as a trading group, allowing GSF Car Parts, Dingbro and Qualvecomm to service customers. Mark continued: “The Parts Alliance was built on the strength, experience and success of every member brand it had acquired over the years. It was formed to bring together the best and brightest of the UK’s motor factors, and it’s this fantastic heritage that has enabled us to reach this point. “GSF Car Parts already has an established national presence with both the independent motor trade and the general public, so we have an excellent springboard on which to launch this unified brand.”

Partbusters and Sogefi Filtration enter into strategic partnership
TRICO Area Sales Manager UK & Ireland, Andy Taylor
TRICO scoops the Product of the Year award
Automotive parts and crash repair products supplier, Partbusters, has signed a global strategic partnership agreement with Sogefi Filtration. During a ceremony, Partbusters Chief Strategy Officer, Haroon Hussain, took the opportunity to demonstrate the company’s vison for the automotive industry as a tech innovator. He said: “We work together with our partners to bring efficiencies for the enduser, innovate and futureproof their legacies
and, most importantly, bring direct end-user engagement to the manufacturers, whilst empowering manufacturers to better perform, giving them more control over their brand growth.” The partnership also includes a commitment from both parties to engage in joint marketing activities, work on innovating data and systems and invest in 360 training, as well as collaborate with other strategic partners to explore potential efficiencies.
AAG adds two more branches to portfolio Alliance Automotive Group (AAG) has completed two new acquisitions, both of which were existing members of UAN. Beverley Motor Factors and Cotswold Motaquip, both of which are single branch LV businesses, boast 12 and four employees respectively. These two announcements make it a hat-trick of recent acquisitions for AAG, having taken over CMF Canterbury, as reported in the November edition of Professional Motor Factor.
TRICO has been presented with the Product of the Year award for its Flex range, by A1 Motor Stores. After relaunching in 2020, the Flex range offering provides more vehicle coverage – including the latest fitment for late Mercedes A-Class, B-Class and C-Class models – as well as being engineered with the latest TRICO original equipment blade structure. The Flex range utilises TRICO’s new TRICO SYNCTM connection system – five clips covering the nine most-popular wiper arm types, which can be added or removed in just one second – and newlydesigned laser cut beam technology for superior pressure distribution. In response to customer feedback, a new ‘top mount’ retrofit connection system has been developed to upgrade older style conventional blades to modern beam technology. The Flex range allows customers to stepup from the conventional wiper to premium beam blade technology – but at a reasonable price, the company said. First Brands Group Brand and Marketing Manager (Europe), Sam Robinson, enthused: “I am absolutely delighted that TRICO has won A1’s Product of the Year award. We worked very hard on the redesign and relaunch of the Flex range to ensure it remains ‘best in class’ in terms of multi-fit wiper blade ranges, and winning this award pays testament to that! “I would like to thank the members that voted for us and look forward to seeing the partnership between TRICO and A1 Motor Stores continue to thrive.”

Graham has also prioritised technology to be at the heart of the organisation by investing in digital platforms and applications, including AIMS and AIMS Lite, which are designed to anticipate and respond to the opportunities and challenges repairers face on a daily basis, such as order fulfilment and stock management. Graham said: “I’m delighted to have been asked by the ACIS board to extend my role with the business as a non-executive director to help the group achieve its ambitions and strategic goals into the future. “My passion remains with this vibrant and dynamic industry, and I’m relishing the opportunity to help drive forward change to enable ACIS customers, members and business partners to secure new business opportunities and realise their growth plans.”

INTERVIEW
IAAF CEO pledges: ‘We should – and will – reach into the heart of every motor factor business’ In an interview with IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field, he summarises his first few months in charge, unveils the trade association’s plans for motor factors and assesses the current state of the market. Mark, you’ve racked up a century of days in-charge of the IAAF, how would you sum up your first 100? Mark Field (MF): “It’s been incredibly varied, typifying the work the IAAF does on behalf of its members. The IAAF has held over 70 meetings in the past 100 days with members, fellow associations and government departments and participated in a number of discussions around issues affecting our trade. “We’ve also been very active, launching new initiatives, such as our new products and services ebulletin to 7,500 garages, holding our first hybrid industry briefing network meeting, and also participating in numerous consultations on the connected car and Northern Ireland MOT test frequency. “We have significantly increased our digital reach and used these platforms to provide clarity on the numerous issues affecting automotive businesses, particularly those of the global supply chain.”

Q
What have you enjoyed most?
Q
What has surprised you?
MF: “There are three things: firstly, the people! I am always in awe of the efforts the IAAF team, board, council and wider membership undertake to support the Federation and the automotive aftermarket. It is always appreciated. “I’ve also enjoyed expanding my knowledge of member businesses and understanding the issues they face on a daily basis. Thirdly, having been in this industry well over 20 years, I’ve enjoyed being in a position to take the excellent work the automotive aftermarket does to a wider audience, in particular, government departments.”
MF: “The IAAF has been in existence for more than 90 years, and I’ve been pleased to see it enjoys a high standing within UK government, and that it’s keen to hear what the Federation and its members have to say.
“In a pro-Brexit era, it’s important we continue to promote the amazing work and value the automotive aftermarket provides to hard-pressed motorists.” Motor factors reading this are likely to be intrigued about your plans, especially now you’ve got your feet under the desk – can you reveal what you and the IAAF has in store for distributors? MF: “The IAAF is a protector of our trade and fights day and night to secure its future prosperity. It is imperative that motor factors engage with the Federation. The IAAF should – and will – reach into the heart of every motor factor business, providing tangible benefits. We are looking at numerous ways to significantly enhance our support to motor factors, particularly in the area of skills and training. “The career path in our trade should not be confined to a particular sector – how do we get more people into parts distribution? What is the career path for the distribution aftermarket? How do we stimulate new ideas and innovation? Motor factors need support across many areas of their business, and IAAF will work tirelessly to provide clarity and pathways to future growth and development. “Plus, in 2022, we’ll have a new

networking programme that offers more meetings and opportunities to engage with IAAF and fellow members in both a leisure and business environment.” Sticking with distributors, how would you assess the market at present? MF: “It’s very busy right now, particularly with the additional number of vehicles requiring an MOT test following the extension in 2020. This can, however, create its own issues with regards to availability and supply, but I know suppliers are working extremely hard to ensure the supply chain runs smoothly – IAAF has produced a number of articles titled The Perfect Storm, to add clarity on global supply chain issues, such as raw material prices, container prices and skills shortages.”
Q
The 2021 Virtual Conference was an opportunity to get to grips with all that’s happening in the automotive aftermarket – what stood out? MF: “The conference took place on 2nd December and was incredibly well received, having attracted more sponsorship support
Q
than ever before. We looked at the present challenges and opportunities but also the future for the aftermarket, as we count down to a number of notable dates, such as Block Exemption renewal in 2023 and also the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2030.” Businesses looking at the future may wonder what’s in-store for them – why should they be excited? MF: “The current vehicle market is growing in size and age, and this benefits the
Q
automotive aftermarket. If we can embrace change, invest in people, skills and technology, we will be best equipped to meet the needs of an evolving vehicle parc in the decades to come. Through this evolution, the IAAF’s role will be to promote positive change and ensure our membership of suppliers, motor factors and garages are not locked out from providing a quality choice in vehicle service and repair.” For more information about IAAF, www.rdr.link/FE001

MyComline merchandise portal offers distributors ‘simple but effective way’ of promoting the brand MyComline provides a platform for customers to enhance their brand marketing and promotional activity, according to Comline Auto Parts Marketing Manager, Jo Emmerson, who reveals how the doorway to the portal opens, as well as give a rundown of her top-five.
W
alk into any motor factor in the land, and it’ll be kitted out with literature, branded clothing, banners and signage. Comline makes the process of obtaining its own merchandise straightforward and offers its customers a wide array of marketing services, most of which is available for personalisation and made to order, in parallel with its own campaigns; for example, in 2021, Comline has been aiming to grow its steering & suspension range by a third, and this has been fronted by the innovative ‘Your New Reality’ campaign, which brings Comline Augmented Reality to the fore. To complement that initiative, the awardwinning British brand is offering an eclectic mix of bespoke steering & suspension merchandise, such as notebooks, winter jackets and even virtual reality (VR)

headsets. These tools, and many more besides, enable motor factors to promote the Comline range and deliver promotions that will entice their customers. Also available at MyComline are a variety of promotional leaflets to download, detailing product features and benefits, as well as a vast library of images, logos, social media content and inspiration for factor vehicle branding. The end-result is a stronger and more dynamic relationship between supplier and motor factor, but, most importantly, the portal is a platform for stockists to grow their Comline business. Comline customers interested in accessing the portal are advised to contact their regional sales manager. In addition, there is a ‘how to’ video guide available directly from the MyComline login screen, which illustrates all the features and functionality available on the portal.
THE FAB FIVE! As demonstrated in our recent Salvage Rebuilds film, Comline-branded kneeling pads are forgiving on the knees, meaning technicians can replace brakes without feeling discomfort or pain when taking the job on. Of course, a distributor may wish to keep this for themselves, particularly if they’re stocking shelves close to the floor!
More and more motor factors are utilising social media, and, as a result, Comline offers a variety of social media tiles, which are dedicated to certain product categories; therefore, they can now promote different Comline products online.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Pandemic highlights opportunity for factors to analyse health and wellbeing procedures of staff Demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, health and safety is such a hot topic at present, but how has COVID testing affected the way organisations and employees feel about other types of health screening? Drugs and alcohol expert, AlcoDigital, investigates.
E
mployee safety has always been the responsibility of the employer. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states: “You could be breaking the law if you knowingly allow drug-related activities in your workplace and you fail to act. It is just as important to know the implications to both your employees and business of not tackling drug misuse, particularly where safety is involved.”
Greater acceptance of testing in principle Research suggests that employees are more receptive to workplace alcohol and drug screening, as the principle of widespread testing becomes an accepted part of everyday life. Indeed, breath testing for alcohol, and saliva testing for other drugs seems far less invasive than the combined oral/nasal swab required for a COVID test.
A strong case to continue with testing Over the past year, many companies and organisations paused or scaled down their alcohol and drug testing operations, either because staff were not in the workplace due to lockdown, or because of hygiene and safety concerns. However, with the correct hygiene procedures in place, it’s possible to test employees for drugs and alcohol in a
I
16 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR DECEMBER 2021
completely COVID-safe way. It’s worth remembering that workplace drug and alcohol screening protects both employees and wider society and also reduces the impact on other healthcare services. During the pandemic, police forces continued to test at the roadside for drugs and alcohol using similar safety protocols to those recommended for the workplace. Police reported that more arrests were being made for drug driving than drink driving during lockdown, and in some forces the drug driving figures were up 50%. Many of those arrested were drivers on their way to work, emphasising the importance of introducing – or reinstating – alcohol and drug screening in the workplace. Suzannah Robin, an alcohol and drug safety expert at AlcoDigital, said: “Introducing a drug and alcohol testing policy can seem like a huge step, and many employers worry their staff will find the process intrusive. “Even before COVID, we were able to show that this isn’t the case, and when introduced correctly and sensitively, most staff actually welcome the process. The pandemic has further proved that testing can become an everyday part of life, and the vast majority of employees realise that the goal is safety and protection, not interference or intrusion.”
HSE guidance – consult your employees before acting It’s important to speak to staff members or their representatives to gain their views and insights before instigating major changes to health and safety policies. HSE also advises that businesses should educate staff on the effects of drugs and alcohol on overall health. Screening is particularly appropriate for safety-critical occupations; for example, workers using machinery, electrical equipment or ladders, or anyone driving or operating heavy lifting equipment. But as with COVID-19 testing, staff cannot be forced to take a test. If they are reluctant to comply, the employer should talk through any concerns and try to resolve them but may take disciplinary action if an employee continues to refuse a test: “Mandatory testing needs to balance an employee’s right to privacy with the overall safety and wellbeing of the workforce,” added Suzannah. “It’s a balancing act that many have grappled with over COVID testing and vaccination. Employees’ views should always be considered, but, ultimately, businesses do have the right to take disciplinary action where clear risks have been identified.” For more information about AlcoDigital, www.rdr.link/FE006

INDUSTRY INSIGHT
TALK OF THE TRADE One of Bosch’s braking experts answers common questions on brake pads and gives their best practice advice. On what makes a good quality brake pad, the expert said: “The requirements for good friction material can be sorted into three categories: safety, comfort and durability. Depending on their specific application, all of these factors need to harmonise in the best possible manner. Consistent braking performance in every driving condition improves safety. “Bosch brake pads operate comfortably by reaching a high level of vibration and noise absorption. This is achieved, among other things, by modifying the shims on the back plate of the pad. This decoupling reduces vibrations and improves the braking comfort. When developing brake pads, the response behaviour, the pedal ‘feel’ and the wear and tear depend first and foremost on the composition of the friction material.”
Reflecting on the previous edition of PMF’s sister title, Professional Motor Mechanic, we share five stories that the editor has picked that should interest motor factor readers.
Kärcher UK Head of Professional Product Marketing, Daniel Took, explores the process for keeping workshops clean and in good working order to prevent undesired health and safety risks. “An unkempt, messy workshop can easily lead to extensive health and safety risks with the potential for trips, slips and, ultimately, injuries. Maintaining a clean and tidy workshop is imperative to protecting workers as they go about their everyday jobs. A good place to start is by focusing on the flooring to avoid potential obstacles that can get underfoot. “The amount and type of dirt will determine the level of cleaning that is required and what machines should be used. Push sweepers, for example, are adept at collecting loose dirt and debris from workshop floors for daily cleaning. However, for a deeper clean to target stubborn dirt, scrubber dryers are more efficient and cost-effective.”

While staff shortages climb to the top of the agenda for workshops across the UK, one Oxfordshire garage prides itself on its exemplary record both in retaining existing staff and attracting young talent. PMM introduces Faringdon Garage, the multi-generational garage making things work. “The garage’s first service technician, employee number one, left us last year after 50 years of service,” explains Aftersales Manager, Steve Neale. “He was man and boy here at Faringdon – he worked no other job in his life. Sadly,
the pandemic disrupted his last working day, and we weren’t able to give him a full send-off.” The shop floor is now overseen by master technician and the second-ever payrolled employee, Stephen ‘Barney’ Bint. His 42 years with the business are closely followed by service technician, Graham French, who will celebrate four decades with the company in the coming months. This year also marks 20 years at Faringdon for service advisor, Laura Carter, and 20 years with Fish Brothers for Emma Payne in parts.
CEO of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), Steve Nash, talks to PMM about the electric vehicle (EV) skills gap and the initiatives the professional body is leading to help the independent sector get EV-ready. “2021 has been a pivotal year for the electric vehicle revolution. Even before the fuel crisis in September – which saw searches for new and used electric vehicles leap by 28% and 61% respectively – the government was clearly focused on its Road to Zero strategy, which aims to have at least half of new cars ultra-low emission by 2030, with big commitments made to building the charging infrastructure. “However, the latest data from the IMI highlights the skills gap that could severely undermine the government’s ambitions. According to our calculations, 90,000 automotive technicians will be required to provide sufficient workforce to service the volume of zero emissions vehicles predicted to be on UK roads by 2030. The pace of EV adoption is accelerating, even while the issues around infrastructure remain a barrier. However, once the charging network is fit for purpose and electric vehicles have become more financially accessible, the race will really be on to ensure we have a workforce adequately qualified to provide the essential servicing, maintenance and repair to keep these vehicles safe on the roads.”
It’s awards season in PMM! Over the past year, it has featured some fantastic articles, contributed from a huge range of excellent sources. Every year, it rounds up the best ones and presents the winners with that year’s PMM Award. PMM Editor, Kieran Nee, said: “This year, we had a real struggle going through the articles we felt made the most impact and gained the most responses from our readers. We weighed up the most popular articles on the e-newsletter each week, the most requested rdr links, the most popular articles on our website and across our social media platforms – in short, compiling this list now encompasses a wider range of media than ever before. Because of this, we are confident it represents every aspect of the automotive aftermarket.”

20 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR DECEMBER 2021
Factor-Sales data has been used to review the value/unit trends that measure key product categories in the UK aftermarket. The tables below are based on sales transactions and credit notes collected daily from over 800 motor factor sites. Factor-Sales’ Ian Penny commented: “Interesting patterns developing as we see that the aftermarket has had a strong year, even allowing for the fact that COVID-19 had such an impact on sales in the first half of 2020. Noticeably, of course, the increase in value far outweighs the increase in unit sales across all product categories. Rising costs, that are affecting so many areas in production and transport, have spiralled so dramatically and seen inflation rising to a 20-year high. Not reaching the levels of the early 90s yet but expect further increases as we move into 2022. “The latest quarter shows a different pattern, as it’s comparing the boost in 2020, as we were allowed out and the MOT ‘period of grace’ ended. This year, we’ve returned to a more normal market without such outside influence. “Like many people, my car continues to spend more time on the driveway than on the road; in fact, it has asked me whether it’s done anything wrong, as it feels so neglected! Less mileage, less wear and tear and, therefore, less spend for the parts and consumables necessary for running a vehicle now doing fewer than 10,000 miles a year when it was used to an annual 35,000-mile workload. Clearly, that still affects so many people, but on the plus side, the significant decline in new car sales in the last few months might just present an opportunity for us all – long may it continue. “Hopefully one good outcome for the independent garage and, therefore, the motor factor, is that more drivers will continue to take their cars to their local workshop rather than the main dealer. We know that the leasing of cars is weighted in favour of the dealer with so many plans having a service plan built into the cost, but that’s always been the case and, anyway, is just another challenge that has to be overcome.” For more information about FactorSales, www.rdr.link/FE008

SPECIAL REPORT
COMPANY INSIGHT
Ferdinand Bilstein UK places emphasis on reliability When it comes to umbrella brands in the independent aftermarket, the bilstein group, with 21 international subsidiaries, is one that stands out. The company sheds light on Blue Print and febi, as well as a tool it says makes finding parts much easier.
I
n 2017, Ferdinand Bilstein UK opened a 205,000sqft logistics centre, which houses more than 50,000 different articles. At the heart of the building is a Witron order picking system that picks and transports orders to bilstein group operatives, who then pack each order ready for delivery. The semi-automated operation allows the company to fulfil around 2,500 orders from motor factors each day.
Blue Print
The Blue Print range consists of more than 24,000 parts, over 160 product types. The company said that, since 1994, the programme has exceeded expectations through dedication to consistently delivering in five key areas: accuracy, identification, quality, range and cataloguing. New products and the latest vehicle releases are continually being researched. This ensures that Blue Print is fast to market and continues to provide motor factors with the right parts to meet customer demand. Built upon the strong coverage for Asian vehicle parts, Blue Print offers an all-makes range for filtration, braking and clutch.
I
22 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR DECEMBER 2021
febi
Established in 1923, the febi range covers more than 40,000 technical replacement parts, and it specialises in steering & suspension, rubber to metal and engine management components. What’s more, the febiPLUS range often includes articles that are otherwise only available from the original equipment (OE) or vehicle manufacturer. High-quality standards are reflected through in-house bilstein group engineering production of precision parts and quality control inspections at the on-site laboratory test facilities. Ferdinand Bilstein UK Marketing Manager, Traci Varley, explained: “One of our greatest strengths is reliability. This is guaranteed by constant product quality, combined with the timely delivery of goods. The same quality standards apply for the entire production line, which are assured by extensive and repeated product tests. These tests constantly question and continually confirm the claim of OE matching quality for every bilstein group component. “To ensure consistent product quality in
every delivery, extensive inspections of incoming goods are carried out following random sample checks. In state-of-the-art testing laboratories, parts are examined in full detail. “These quality assurance measures are not carried out solely for the products produced in Ennepetal, but also for the components manufactured by carefully selected production partners.”
partsfinder – Searching becomes finding
In 2017, partsfinder was introduced to make finding parts across the bilstein group brands easier. The core of the system is the direct search by a spare part description box. partsfinder determines the correct result based on just a few keywords. Also, motor factors have additional options to search for a part, such as using the OE number. Irrespective of which path is selected, results are never more than three clicks away. Many product pages even feature 360-degree illustrations, functional descriptions, or safety data sheets. Additional functions are also available, such as a ‘Car Park’ that allows the user to save frequently used models to be quickly called up when required. On top of this, the VIN now displays when registration numbers are entered to help identify correct parts for a right-first-time fit. REMANUFACTURING
Autoelectro: ‘Our remanufacturing knowledge and background is priceless’ Remanufacturing has been at the heart of Autoelectro’s business, ever since it was founded back in 1986. After celebrating its 35th anniversary and welcoming its one millionth starter motor and alternator off the production line in 2021, its UK sales manager, Nick Hood, is well-placed to explain how the practice of remanufacturing helps protect the environment and how technology has evolved.
I
t is estimated, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, that the UK remanufacturing industry is worth £2.4 billion, and the automotive sector is one of the most ‘established’. With more than three decades under its belt, Autoelectro certainly matches that label. Its team of experts, using its bespoke testing equipment, will dismantle a frail old core, strip it down, before reengineering it back to at least its original specification – even exceeding performance at times, as a result of the quality of the new components fitted, according to the company. The ability to iron out any original design flaws, combined with the support and knowledge behind the product, should be an appealing proposition.
Remanufacturing offers environmental benefits Over the years, Autoelectro has earned internationally-recognised accolades for its continued commitment and investment in
environmental practices, such as the Green Apple Environmental Award in 2015. Nick said: “We try to save as much original material from the old core and reduce the use of raw materials. The fewer raw materials, the less energy is consumed during the whole process. Products can also enjoy longer durability than some original parts.”
Advances in technology The advances in technology over the last decade have presented a new set of challenges, but, at the same time, the data and understanding gained from those trials has meant it is equipped to share its knowhow with its customers. “Remanufacturing has become more complex over the years, with the introduction of ECU controlling, stop-start, and smart charging. The experience and knowledge gained has meant we can assist both technicians and distributors, whether it be workouts, online technical support or a handy guide inside the box.”
Reputation on the line Nick believes that remanufacturing continues to face an image issue, in that there is still a perception that remanufactured goods are classed as ‘second-hand’ or not as good as brand new units. The practice also continues to be threatened by poor quality, low-cost imports, but, despite the challenges, Nick advised: “As a remanufacturer, whose brand is steeped in 35 years of history, we have a clear understanding of how the components go back together. To dismantle the old unit, diagnose why it originally failed and then fully rebuild it to at least its original specification takes experience, knowledge and resources – all attributes that the company has significantly invested in over the years.”

REMANUFACTURING
Remanufacturing part of ZF’s #greenaftermarket roadmap A pivotal topic of both the recently held Automechanika Digital Plus 2021 and ZF Live, ZF’s own digital show, which was held in parallel, was ‘sustainability’. Offering remanufactured solutions to save materials and reduce emissions was unveiled as one aspect of ZF’s sustainability roadmap; continuing to source green energy for its factories being another – PMF learns more.
Z
F claimed its products are worldleading in terms of efficiency, helping customers to reduce fuel consumption and thus emissions. The global challenge is to achieve climate neutrality along the entire value chain: for all primary products and associated transport routes, but also for the product, the vehicle itself, its use and disposal – ZF is working towards neutralising these emissions by 2040. Furthermore, ZF is reducing CO2 emissions across all production steps and processes, like controlling machine tools according to demand or by substituting
I
26 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR DECEMBER 2021
gas-based processes, such as hardening. As a result, these sustainably manufactured products are available to the aftermarket as one element of ZF’s #greenaftermaket roadmap. Another element is remanufacturing – reducing material requirements by up to 90% compared to the manufacture of a new product. At the same time, around 90% of energy can be saved, stated ZF. A wide range of vehicle components, such as brakes, transmissions, steering systems, and torque converters, are remanufactured to original equipment (OE) quality at more than 20 locations worldwide – and the
trend is rising. Furthermore, ZF Aftermarket’s experts are already working on remanufactured solutions for electric drives, in readiness for demand. Philippe Colpron, head of ZF’s Aftermarket Division, believes ZF Aftermarket and its partners are in a good position: “ZF Aftermarket has the ambition to be the green and sustainable aftermarket frontrunner, with aspirational goals in many areas, such as carbon neutrality, plastic-free packaging and education. “Based on the technology leadership of the ZF Group, ZF Aftermarket brings sustainable OE technologies and approaches to the aftermarket. Our recipe for success is a combination of strong customer focus, service presence exactly where the customer needs it and a steadily growing product and service portfolio, including digital solutions. In an increasingly complex world, we want to offer simplicity, convenience and added value at the same time.” For more information about ZF, www.rdr.link/FE012

AISIN launches automatic transmission remanufacturing service In the powertrain field, in a bid to curb global warming, AISIN promotes vehicle electrification and has been involved in the development of automatic and hybrid transmissions, as well as engine components. Now, the company says urgent action is required to address climate change and is focusing on powertrain advancements in helping achieve the goal of zero emissions.
A
ISIN technology will create innovations to help solve environmental and social issues. By 2030, AISIN said it will raise the share of electric products to 50% of total sales. AISIN has already proposed a range of fluids in the aftermarket. Engineered for drivability and smooth shift, the AT fluids provide improved step-off and acceleration, with optimal flow and temperature characteristics while
protecting against corrosion. Now, a new AISIN partnership with STELLANTIS offers a “new lease of life” on a damaged automatic transmission. Using the power and reliability of the AISIN service network, customers can have a workshop send their automatic transmission back for remanufacture and expect the piece back within (usually) a week. The process is designed to optimise repair time and allow professionals to
remain competitive. AISIN said this new service is in line with residual value of the vehicle and proposes an appropriate, sustainable remanufactureand-return offer. What’s more, the partnership offers customers high-quality of service and cost savings, plus they keep their repaired automatic gearbox, saving up to 80% of energy and materials versus a standard replacement, the company claimed. This partnership is a direct response to market trends where the share of vehicles with automatic gearboxes is increasing. For more information about AISIN, www.rdr.link/FE013

Shaftec’s ‘healthy stock holding’ beats Brexit and COVID challenges In this year’s final issue, PMF talks to Shaftec Marketing Manager, Joe Toakley, about 2021, what’s new and what’s in the pipeline for next year.
W
hile this year has certainly been an interesting one with new faces and many positive changes, and with next year shaping up to be just as exciting with major trade shows, new products and new European business opportunities on the horizon – one thing that hasn’t changed is Shaftec’s ability to always deliver on quality, availability and customer service. At Shaftec, we are aware of how fortunate we’ve been to not only have weathered the Brexit and COVID storms, but to have actually thrived in 2021; growing the business both in the UK and across Europe in an incredibly difficult business climate. It would be wrong, though, to attribute this position to pure luck, as we invest heavily in long-term planning and strategic forecasting and work closely with partners TecAlliance to be able to offer our customers the most reliable and up-to-date technical data. I’d like to pay tribute to every single Shaftec employee for their hard work, tenacity and innate ability to understand that if we weren’t able to offer the excellent customer service that we do, I’m not sure that things would be looking so positive. A constant healthy stock holding of more than £5 million has meant that whatever the situation in terms of Brexit and COVID, our customers have seen no change in supply
I
28 PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR DECEMBER 2021
chain status. We’ve ensured a seamless supply of our full range of remanufactured and new braking, steering and transmission components from our UK-based business has, via our customers, consistently reached the UK garages, allowing the wheels of businesses further down the supply chain to keep on turning. Operating under one roof from our central midlands-based facility means that we have almost complete process control. Literally everything, from old core acceptance through to the boxing of fullytested, shelf-ready product, happens in one place.
“Next year is already shaping up to be a fantastic year for the Shaftec brand” In order to safeguard the interests of our customers – and in turn their customers the garages – we’d been planning for Brexit for years. I think because of that, when the world was literally upended with the shock that was COVID, we were already in a good position. It helped that in order to enhance efficiency, bolster productivity and amplify our square footage we consolidated the entire business into one facility in 2015. In 2018, we further increased capacity by 8,000sqft by adding a mezzanine floor, giving us a total of 50,000sqft of production and storage space for finished stock and ancillary parts that are sourced from original equipment suppliers abroad, like brake caliper seals. And because we maintained a healthy stockholding and excellent availability helping to keep our customers satisfied, we’ve been able to dedicate time and effort to think about the future – post Brexit and post Covid. We’ve got stands booked at major industry exhibitions, including Automechanika, where we’ll be able to
increase the exposure of the Shaftec brand to our European markets. We’ll also take this opportunity to announce some exciting product developments. While the majority of our business lies within the remanufacturing sector, we monitor our markets very closely, listen to what our customers need and make sure we operate in line with current and future business trends. The new products we’ll introduce reflect all of this. We’ve also made some major changes to our senior management team structure, to better equip the business as it enters the next stage of its development.
Welcome to the team!
In April this year, we welcomed Charlie Towle as our warehouse project leader, the first woman to undertake this role and another woman joining our senior management team. Responsible for the day-to-day management of goods in, packing, carriage, improving stock processes and for all the people on the shopfloor, Charlie has already made some important changes which have improved efficiency. It’s also great to have another woman working in a senior role at Shaftec. As 2021 draws to a close, we’re all set to continue to be the supplier of choice across our key areas for the garages of the UK. Our mantra is that range and availability are key: this message I don’t think has ever been more important. For more information about Shaftec, www.rdr.link/FE014

DIAGNOSTICS & TOOLS
Delphi Technologies’ diagnostic tools present ‘welcome opportunity to drive revenue growth’ Motor factors can take advantage of continuously evolving vehicle technology by ensuring they’re supporting their workshop customers, offering the appropriate tools and equipment. Delphi Technologies offers an insight into which of its diagnostic tools is helping distributors achieve that.
W
ith today’s vehicles becoming increasingly complex, and even the most modest of cars now equipped with an array of sophisticated electronic systems, workshops must ensure their problem-solving skills and tools are up to the job if they are to secure their longterm future. For motor factors, that creates the need to understand their customer’s requirements and respond with the right equipment for the job, and nowhere is that more critical than in selecting the right diagnostic tool. However, the benefits to motor factors go beyond the initial sale. By recommending a tool that expands the range of services a workshop can offer, it creates the opportunity to drive sales growth both through increased parts sales and through licence renewals. Delphi Technologies said it understood how important that relationship is when it launched its new BlueTech VCI diagnostic tool. Its intuitive design belies the complexity beneath, with a simple LED icon panel and colour-coded surround lighting that ensures its status is visible to the technician from almost any angle. Its processor is five times more powerful than its predecessor, delivering faster vehicle scan times than ever before, while new integrations, such as CAN FD, multiple
CAN channels and Diagnostics over Internet Protocol, offer workshops costeffective and access to the latest troubleshooting methods. That includes features, such as DTCassist, connecting technicians with guided diagnostic assistance, while Pass-Thru capability opens the door to services, like ECU programming and ADAS calibration, which were previously the preserve of franchised dealers and their OE-specific tools, the company said. By supporting the widest range of vehicle brands and types, from cars and vans to trucks and buses, the BlueTech VCI expands the scope of work workshops can offer, maximising their revenue and growth potential. This, in turn, creates the opportunity to increase parts sales, and as workshops evolve and expand their service offering to welcome new vehicles
through their doors, this, ultimately, benefits motor factors. But it’s not just part sales that motor factors stand to benefit from, with the sale of every BlueTech VCI a chance to develop both new and regular income. The accompanying software is offered with a one, two or three-year licence, and its renewal is an opportunity for motor factors to generate an ongoing revenue stream that ensures regular contact with their customers and strengthens the relationship: “Access to regular updates is vitally important as our vehicles become ever more complex,” said Delphi Technologies Aftermarket – Northern Europe Marketing Manager, Julian Goulding: “Our diagnostic tools are constantly updated, increasing not only the number of supported vehicles, but also the scope of functionality on offer. “While the task of ensuring a garage’s knowledge and toolset are kept up-to-date may seem a daunting one, in truth, it presents a welcome opportunity to drive revenue growth – both for the garage as they expand their services and cater to the needs of a wider customer base, but also for the motor factor through the sale of new tools, software, and parts.” For more information about Delphi Technologies, www.rdr.link/FE015

DIAGNOSTICS & TOOLS
Hella Gutmann Solutions launches mega macs X The mega macs X is a product that changes the operational method and communication with the vehicle from a diagnostic standpoint, providing a solution that can adapt to whatever size of workshop. Head of Hella Gutmann Solutions UK, Neil Hilton, explains:
R
eflecting the changing world in which we live, where smartphone and apps are part of day-to-day life, Hella Gutmann has taken this successful formula and translated it into the world of vehicle diagnostics to produce a fully scalable device that can provide the highest level of multi-brand capability and has made it able to communicate with a workshop’s existing IT infrastructure. The mega macs X provides utmost flexibility and an array of options when it comes to both the hardware and software configurations. It allows individual workshops to choose whether they wish to combine their existing desktop

browsers or tablets with the mega macs X or move to a totally mega macs driven platform. This level of flexibility means that should the workshop’s requirements change, then it is able to change the mega macs X setup to match. However, the mega macs X is not only flexible in terms of hardware. Thanks to the different software modules that are available, workshops also have a choice when it comes to the scope of the services that can be accessed. This flexibility ensures that the workshop is always able to gear the service level it requires to the needs of its customers and, should these requirements

DIAGNOSTICS & TOOLS
change, the software module can likewise be altered to make sure it always fulfils the needs of the workshop. Not only is the mega macs X different from previous diagnostic solutions in its approach, it’s also very different in appearance, as it has neither a display nor a keypad. At a first glance, the wired OBD plug with integrated LED lighting, looks like a modern, neatly designed Bluetooth VCI, which incidentally it is, but this futureorientated and most flexible of solutions is also the most advanced diagnostic tool Hella Gutmann has ever developed. It incorporates the processor, diagnostic software and integrated diagnostic protocols, which includes among others, the CAN FD and DoIP for new vehicle models, such as Škoda Octavia, Volvo XC 90 and Golf 8 of Volkswagen, and communicates on a wireless basis. The well-thought-out design comprises sophisticated details, such as useful cable duct and a magnetic surface, for easy and secure fixing, and the compact dimensions means it can be placed easily on the charging tray when not in use. A green LED progress bar on the front and back of the
“The well-thought-out design comprises sophisticated details, such as useful cable duct and a magnetic surface, for easy and secure fixing, and the compact dimensions means it can be placed easily on the charging tray when not in use.” device indicates active vehicle communication when performing diagnostic work. The mega macs X approach also allows workshops to stay in control of their overheads, as beyond the one-off costs to purchase the mega macs X hardware and relevant SDI X software, the only ongoing costs are for the associated annual licence, which obviously includes any updates and system improvements as they are issued. Naturally, as with the other mega macs devices in the Hella Gutmann line-up, the mega macs X is equipped with ADAS calibration software, which is now a must have feature for forward thinking workshops, as a standard feature. addition, however, it also comes with a CSM (Cyber Security Management) function. This means that instead of having to register individually with each vehicle manufacturer portal to obtain diagnostic releases for their customer’s vehicles and subjecting themselves to extensive checks and potentially significant extra costs, a one-time authentication, activated by proof of identification by passport or identity card, is all that’s needed for a mega macs user to have a clear path to work on all vehicles with a security lock, at the usual diagnostic depth. Ring MAGflex Utility Lamp ‘every technician’s best friend’ The MAGflex Utility Inspection Lamp is proving popular, according to Ring, thanks to its flexibility to get super bright light in the right places.
T
he versatile inspection lamp can also be used hands-free, as it has two adjustable magnetic bases and dual hanging hooks, allowing it to provide illumination without needing to be held in place. This means it is ideal for placing under the bonnet, on the underside of vehicles or on ramps, acting as site light to illuminate a large work area. Ring’s MAGflex Utility Lamp has wideangled illumination and emits up to 1,000 lumens of white light. Technicians can position the light exactly where it’s needed, thanks to the lamp’s 360-degree rotating body. It’s
rechargeable, cordless and has an operating time of up to two-and-ahalf hours. The RIL3700HP comes with mains and 12V DC charging cables, offering technicians an allrounder for illuminating a wide range of workspaces. Ring Automotive Workshop Lighting Product Manager, Roisin Gaughan, said: “The MAGflex Utility Lamp offers more flexibility when it comes to inspection
lighting. It has a wide-angle illumination source and is also portable, powerful and hands-free, making it every technician’s best friend.” For more information about Ring, www.rdr.link/FE017
