Keeping things under review I’ve been back on Professional Motor Factor for a few months now, and I’ve been encouraged by the level of interest and feedback received on some of the articles produced by our excellent contributors.

Whether it's in the palm of your hand or on a screen, I'm delighted that readers have been enjoying the magazine. Naturally, I won’t get everything right and as my own worst critic, I’m always hoping the next issue is better than the last – as a motor factor, are you forever analysing your performance? Whether it’s the profit and loss account or ability to manage your staff, are you constantly reviewing?

In this month’s issue, Ecobat Battery offers a superb, in-depth insight into how its staff are continually strengthening their skillet (pg 23). It’s a crucial part of the company’s ongoing strategy to assist you and your colleagues, not just to maximise battery sales opportunities, but to ensure they’re always by your side and ready to offer support when it’s required.

Its training manager, Christopher Jones, explained: “It’s important that we are fully informed in all aspects of the battery business, including how they (factors) work and how to care for them.

“By following this course of action, we are properly equipped to inform and guide our customers, which in turn helps them when they are speaking to their workshop customers and supplying them with the replacements they need.”

Sticking with batteries, VARTA offers its expertise and experience to estimate how the increased pressure to go electric will impact you, your customers and the industry as a whole (pg 20). Spoiler alert: the company doesn’t think traditional work – the bread-and-butter, as one of the company’s technical trainers, Andy Cook, put it – will be drying up anytime soon.

That said, the company does allude to workshop businesses preparing for the changing car parc: “Some forward-thinking independent workshops are taking advantage of it, by specialising in the aftermarket electric vehicle segment. News on these types of workshops report business is booming, particularly because, at present, they are few and far between and often have little local competition.”

Going back to reviewing performances and looking at how improvements can be made, how far along are you with e-commerce? NEWS LKQ Euro Car Parts expands branch network in South West England LKQ Euro Car Parts has opened its first branch in Cirencester, offering drivers and workshops in the area “convenient, local access” to the distributor’s 160,000-strong range of car, light commercial vehicle and speciality parts.

LKQ Euro Car Parts said its range is designed to help local businesses futureproof their operations and cater for the latest, cleanest vehicles on the road. It stocks the likes of Bosch, Duracell and Continental, as well as having its own line of brands.

While the Cirencester branch is LKQ Euro Car Parts’ first in the

town, it already has sites across South West England, including Gloucester, Bristol and Bath.

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has welcomed Maverick Diagnostics to its organisation.

Maverick Diagnostics provides automotive IT services and original dealer diagnostic equipment, specialising in technical areas, such as vehicle manufacturer (VM) registrations, set-up of dealer tools and training of dealer diagnostic tools.

The company partners with a European vehicle technical support business to offer its end-to-end support for all aftermarket workshop types, equipped with or without dealer tools. It also provides other types of workshop equipment, such as aftermarket diagnostics tools, key programming products, ADAS and air conditioning products.

The brand is also looking to develop and produce its own diagnostics tool range specifically aimed at electric vehicles.

Maverick Diagnostics Managing Director, Andy Brooke, said: “By joining the IAAF's membership, we would like to contribute to the ongoing 2023 BER situation. Kalimex celebrated two awards at the recent JLM Lubricants Distributor awards’ ceremony held at Circuit Zandvoort.

The UK distributor of JLM Lubricants not only won top sales for the second consecutive year, but Colin Benzie (bottom-left) was named Marketing and Sales Employee of the Year.

VLS offers its support to motor factors New Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) Chairman, Mike Bewsey, on why he took the top job, his to-do list and offers motor factors advice on missold or mislabelled engine oil.

Mike, congratulations on your new role as VLS chairman – what made you want to take on this job?

Mike Bewsey (MB): “I was delighted to be invited to become the chairman of VLS. I have been involved with VLS since 2016 as a board member and have seen first-hand just how vital our work is in upholding standards in the lubricants industry.

“VLS aims to achieve an open and level playing field that benefits all lubricant companies by verifying the performance claims and technical specifications upon which lubricants are marketed to the end user. It allows all companies to compete on service, value and product quality whilst assuring the claims made on lubricant products are valid and reliable.

“As well as chairman of VLS, I am also business unit director of Moove Lubricants, a key player in the lubricants industry. Over the years, VLS has given Moove the assurance it

needs that if we come across a product in the marketplace that has a conflicting technical specification or performance claims that simply don’t make sense, then we can have it checked out. If necessary, it can be tested by an independent third party to validate our concerns and resolve any mislabelling issues.”

What are your main objectives going to be moving forwards?

MB: “I am very proud of everything that VLS has achieved to date and very much want to build on those solid foundations.

“Over the years, the types of cases that VLS have handled have changed. VLS has adapted to reflect market needs. In 2019, VLS launched new marketing claims guidance in response to cases involving overclaiming of specifications. In 2020, VLS entered into a primary authority relationship with Buckinghamshire & Surrey

Trading Standards to support greater compliance for members and the industry by providing assured advice on lubricant marketing issues and the basis of claims in consumer law, as well as providing an intervention and escalation route for noncompliant products in the case of noncooperative lubricant marketers.

“In 2022, our main objectives will be to support the transition to dealing with specifications built on new technology, including plug-in electric hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles. With original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) pushing forward with new technology to meet the upcoming internal combustion engine ban planned for 2030, whilst motorists are holding onto their vehicles for longer than ever, lubricants manufacturers, distributors, mechanics and motorists alike will need our support to understand how to correctly market lubricants and use them in vehicles, as we begin to transition away from petrol and diesel engines. We can provide stability during change and maintain that all-important level playing field for those involved in the lubricants industry.

“I also see a role in VLS undertaking greater outreach with other similar

programmes, from Germany’s FSQ programme to the Australian Lubricant Association’s product quality programme, API’s product quality surveys and even ATIEL’s product compliance and monitoring, to ensure a joined-up and cohesive approach in sharing our experience here in the UK with other national and global product compliance programmes.”

Are lubricant manufacturers prepared for Euro VII emissions standards?

MB: “We are expecting the European Commission to announce its draft proposals for the new Euro VII emission standards in early 2022. The industry has been debating for some time how far these standards should go. The German Association of the Automotive Industry has already warned that the move could result in the combustion engine being phased out from as early as 2025, as the stricter CO2 and NOx emissions limits being introduced will result in combustion engines no longer being competitive.

“We are also expecting new tests which will require vehicles to meet stricter

Why are there fewer cases going through to VLS now as opposed to two years ago? Despite the pandemic, do you feel the message around compliance is being heard and understood within the industry?

MB: “When VLS was first formed in 2013, there was clearly a lack of understanding in the marketplace. VLS initially worked through a higher volume of cases, improving education and standards across the industry. As a result of better compliance, the number of cases reported to VLS is now lower; however, those that are being reported are more complex and often take longer to resolve.

“We are confident that the message around compliance is being heard and that

MB: “If an engine oil sounds too good to be true or a motor factor has any concerns about it being mis-sold or mislabelled it is important to double-check. You can report a product you have concerns about to VLS, who will independently investigate it to confirm if it really can deliver what it claims.

Poor quality or incorrect engine oil can cause accelerated wear in gears and bearings, leading to increased maintenance costs and, if left unchecked, eventual engine failure.”

EMPLOYMENT LAW

Driving for work: the employment law issues I f an employee is entitled to a company car, it is advisable that this fact and any conditions about use of the car are set out in their employment contract. Likewise, for anyone who must be able to drive in order to do their job properly, it is important to state in the contract that loss of their driving licence might lead to their dismissal (if no jobs that don’t involve driving are available as an alternative).

It is also a good idea to have a Driving for Work Policy in a business, setting out rules for use of company vehicles, reimbursement of fuel costs, insurance, safe driving etc. Some employers will want to go further and have specific rules about withdrawal of a company vehicle if the employee has too many accidents or convictions.

Driving licence

An employer is entitled to know the status of their employee’s driving licence if they need to drive on company business. The most efficient way to check an employee’s licence status nowadays is for the employee to produce a check code to allow the employer access to their driving record on gov.uk – visit www.rdr.link/FG003

Trackers

Many employers will install trackers and other devices to monitor the location of their vehicles and the speed they’re being driven. If factors do use trackers in their company vehicles, it is vital that they issue employees with a Privacy Notice under the Data Protection Act, specifying the purposes for which they will use the data recorded on the device(s); for instance, if tracker information will be used to discipline employees for speeding or careless driving, employees need to know in advance that this might be done.

Family-friendly leave

As personal use of a company car is classed as a non-monetary benefit, employees on maternity, paternity or adoption leave will normally be entitled to keep their vehicle during periods of such family-friendly leave. It’s advisable to discuss with employees whether they do

If employees drive as part of their job, whether in their own vehicle or a company vehicle, it’s important to know that complying with the law is not just about dealing with issues, like insurance and maintenance.

There are various employment law issues that ought to be covered too. Pauline Hughes of Just Employment Law highlights the main issues motor factors should be thinking about. want to keep their vehicle during periods of extended leave, as they will still need to pay tax on the benefit while their earnings are likely to be reduced.

Termination of employment

If an employee who has a company car is paid in lieu of notice when their employment ends, it’s important to understand that they will normally be entitled to a payment in lieu of the value of the benefit they are losing if their company vehicle has to be returned right away.

Some employers will avoid this problem by writing into employment contracts that a payment in lieu of notice will cover basic salary only, and there is no right to a payment in lieu of benefits.

‘Meet your customers’ demands with an e-commerce website’ Customer shopping habits have been shifting for some time, but the past 18 months have really expedited the pace of change. MAM Software wants motor factors to “embrace the Click & Collect trend”.

ccording to a 2021 report by Retail Economics, 46% of consumers have shopped online for a product they would previously have bought in store.

The convenience that e-commerce provides is here to stay, and it’s up to motor factor businesses to make sure they have a platform that is up to the task.

MAM Software has expanded its offering, not only by providing ERP solutions, but also a range of e-commerce platforms that are fully integrated with its software. Many businesses are already reaping the benefits of B2B and B2C online trading by using these platforms, as are their own customers.

Embrace the Click & Collect trend

One shopping trend that has gained popularity over recent months is Click & Collect. GlobalData’s report forecasts it will account for 13.9% of online sales this year, making it a lucrative option for any business that’s serious about trading online.

Giles believes that during the national lockdown, it was the safety of Click & Collect that made it so appealing; however, consumers are now recognising it as a convenient way to shop in the long term: “There has recently been a cultural shift,” he revealed. “People can still go shopping, but they realise they can now get exactly what they want before they visit a store. It’s a very powerful offering if a company has the right website to provide the service.”

Outperform the competition with an e-commerce website

One of the biggest advantages of an ecommerce platform is that it opens up businesses to their customers 24/7. In an age where having a website is very much the norm rather than exception, it has become a necessary tool for staying competitive in a challenging market.

Giles said: “A lot of people are using mobile devices out of normal working hours. If they can’t find what they need from you, they will go straight to your competitors to see if they have it, who will ultimately secure the sale.”

An e-commerce site also has the potential to inspire greater customer loyalty. If someone knows they can get a product, night or day, they will return to that website time and time again for the sheer convenience it has to offer.

In some cases, ultimately, they might not make the purchase online. An e-commerce website acts as a shop window, so the customer can see what’s available, they might then head into the branch for a conversation before they finally make a purchase.

E-COMMERCE

Don’t overlook mobile optimisation

When choosing an e-commerce website, it’s essential not to overlook the importance of mobile optimisation. An increasing number of consumers now search for and purchase what they need using a mobile device, with a study by Centre for Retail Research suggesting 43% of online retailing in the UK is now carried out via smartphones and tablets.

Giles added: “Make it easy for a mechanic to get hold of the part they urgently need to fix a car. The days of having to call a supplier are over – making a website mobile-friendly will make it infinitely more appealing to the modern consumer!

“With a diverse range of e-commerce solutions, we are perfectly placed to help with the next stage of digital transformation.”

n addition to providing details on the wide range of products from JLM, the publication includes a series of useful articles on exhaust and emissions issues, which will help factors give good advice to their customers on which products to recommend and when to use them.

On page seven, for example, journalist, Rob Marshall, looks into the problems related to GDI engines and emissions. GDI engines use high-pressure direct injection technology to reduce greenhouse gases and improve efficiency and although this ticked the box for car manufacturers, the downside was that engines became dirtier.

Repeated forced regens or use of multiple additives, especially low-quality iron-based products, can quickly lead to terminal damage costing the motorist thousands, all of which could have been prevented with a bit of additional knowledge and diagnosis.”

Darren expands on this major problem on page 48, together with Stephen Kasapsis, a DPF Doctor in Australia.

Further detail on this serious issue is covered on page 50. The DPF Doctor network is seeing hundreds of terminally damaged DPFs every month, almost all of which could have been saved and repaired if the problems had been addressed correctly earlier on.

Darren Darling added: “Most garages appreciate that DPFs require relatively high temperatures to regenerate. What they may not know is that higher temperatures are not always better, and the car has measures to protect itself.”

PMF has pinched a copy of the most recent edition of Professional Motor Mechanic and picked out four stories that should perk readers’ interest this month.

GYS Marketing Manager, Richard Fothergill, explained the differences between the three types of booster packs offered by the company: traditional, lithium and super capacitor.

He said: “In winter, we see many problems (when it comes to) starting vehicles. The once humble booster pack was always the solution but, as with all things, technology has created more options for the technician. As well as conventional booster packs, we now see super small lithium booster packs and the very exciting development of batteryless boosters which operate with supercapacitors.

“Booster packs are a popular and effective means of starting a vehicle where no mains supply is available. Traditionally, and still very much the popular, are the units with a specially designed starter battery inside; however, technology has now enabled alternative solutions; there are now three technologies each offering different advantages to help drivers get a vehicle started.”

Meanwhile, MS Motorservice dives under the bonnet to reveal all about electropneumatic valves.

Within the article, a company spokesperson said: “Electropneumatic valves are small, unobtrusive and frequently fitted within areas of the engine compartment which are difficult to see or access. The function of the valves within the pneumatic system of the vehicle is equivalent to the function of switches and dimmers in electric circuits.

“In connection with a pneumatic actuator, it is thus possible to operate valves or to control turbochargers, for example. They offer the following advantages: 쎲 High actuating forces from within a small space 쎲 The necessary low pressure as auxiliary energy is available in almost all vehicles (due to the low-pressure in the intake manifold or generated by a vacuum pump) 쎲 Only a small amount of electric power is necessary for the actuating processes”

PMM also ran a product test on WD40 Specialist Penetrant. Dixons of Pudsey got to work on some particularly hard-to-budge parts and found that a few sprays were enough to save a lot of hassle and money – here’s an extract from the test: “When the opportunity arose to use the penetrant spray on a particularly awkward rusted jeep suspension job, the expectations were high. The promises on the can were that the spray “specifically targets corroded or rusted components and mechanisms. Its formula loosens stuck or seized parts quickly and easily...” – now was the opportunity to see whether it lives up to the hype or not.

“We used it with and without the spray straw, using the straw to get into the harder-to-reach areas and gave the bolts and ball joint a thorough coating. We left it to work its magic and kept returning to try and spanner off the nuts. It did eventually work. One application wasn’t enough for this job and in the

end, it took three coatings to get there, but get there we did – without the use of added heat.

“After leaving the penetrant to soak, we removed the nut and could see where it had done its job. The alternative in this situation would have been to use heat and possibly cut through the nuts. This would have been time consuming and costly.”

There was also an interview with Ferodo’s Jonathan Allen, who opened up about Fuse+, the company’s latest technological development.

PMM Editor, Kieran Nee, asked how Ferodo developed its Fuse+ technology, with Jonathan revealing it took “three years of engineering, extensive laboratory and real-world testing of 75 different materials”.

He added: “(It took) the careful selection and combination of 20 of those materials to produce this latest innovative and unique pad.”

When asked how Fuse+ ensures cars are fitted with the most environmentally sustainable option, Jonathan replied: “By including our exclusive zero-copper Eco-Friction Technology, which cuts pad emissions by 60%, Fuse+ Technology helps to protect the environment, and workshops can be assured they are providing motorists with a sustainable solution.

“Ferodo’s parent company, Tenneco, was one of the first companies to offer low and zero-copper brake pads. Its zero-copper formulations were developed using a tribological fingerprinting process to identify alternative materials that can provide the same stopping performance; noise, vibration and harshness characteristics; durability performance as traditional copper brake pads.”

VARTA: ‘The bread-and-butter business of a garage will remain for many years to come’ VARTA lends it expertise and experience to predict how ‘increased pressure’ to go electric will impact the independent aftermarket and how the battery manufacturer can steer customers in the right direction.

A

s higher emission restrictions imposed by governments around the world come into place, and a consumer mind-shift to greener options and more environmentally friendly footprints, vehicle manufacturers (VMs) have come under increased pressure to go electric.

The UK government ban on petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 is not an uncommon approach in achieving a reduction in emissions – most European countries have similar plans to enforce the restriction on traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales.

As drivers become more accepting of electric vehicles (EVs), this is reflected in new car registrations, with full EVs expected to be 30% of European sales by 2030.

In the UK, alternative fuelled vehicles (hybrids as well as EVs) accounted for 44% of new car sales in 2021 – 10% of which were full EVs, according to GiPA; in fact, the BBC reported that EV registrations rose by 75% last year, from 108,000 to 191,000 – this is a strong indicator that the car parc is changing.

What does all this mean for the automotive aftermarket?

There are workshop businesses preparing for the changing car parc already; some forward-thinking independent workshops are taking advantage of it, by specialising in the aftermarket EV segment. News on these types of workshops report business is booming, particularly because, at

present, they are few and far between and often have little local competition.

Despite all the developments mentioned above, the aftermarket should still consider that by 2030 forecasts suggest only 7.5% of the vehicle parc in Europe will be full EV. The vast majority of cars on the road will still be a mix of traditional ICE and those with a start-stop system, and so the traditional work and repair jobs carried out in workshops across the UK will remain.

VARTA Technical Trainer, Andy Cook, expanded: “Even though the very latest vehicles are increasingly electrified, the bread-and-butter business of a garage will remain for many years to come. Yes, there are those businesses preparing for the future, but garages shouldn’t be alarmed; there is still plenty of traditional work (and will be) for the foreseeable future.”

VARTA has predicted that what the vehicle parc will see developing in the immediate future is the rise of start-stop vehicles. New ICE models being released without a start-stop system are minimal, and by 2023, 53% of the UK parc will have a start-stop system. This is key for the battery replacement market, as these types

It is clear that cars being developed currently will be packed full of computer modules and electrical features – less mechanical, more software-based.

of vehicles require a different kind of battery, either an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) or Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB).

Andy said: “A traditional flooded leadacid battery cannot be used on start-stop vehicles, and, therefore, the aftermarket share of AGM and EFB batteries will continue to increase dramatically from 16% in 2018 to 41% in 2023.

“Factor staff and those fitting batteries in the workshop need to be aware if the battery required for a vehicle is a start-stop type, as fitting the incorrect technology can result in a vastly shortened lifespan, or some functionality on the vehicle not operating correctly.

“It is essential that an AGM or EFB is fitted to these start-stop cars, (as) an older style lead-acid battery simply will not do the job on a car that is constantly stopping and then starting again; they were not designed to handle the increased number of start cycles.”

In addition, VARTA said it is vital to have an up-to-date battery tester in the workshop, which has the capability of accurately testing the vehicle’s battery, and this includes AGM and EFB types. Many

older testers will not be able to test these types, and so it is worth workshops investing in the latest test equipment.

Ecobat Battery further increases its in-branch training to benefit factors As part of its ongoing strategy to assist motor factors in maximising battery sales opportunities, pan-European and multi-brand distributor, Ecobat Battery, continues to train its frontline team throughout its branches across UK and Ireland. Ecobat Battery Training Manager, Christopher Jones, explains how the company is proactively helping them.

t’s important that we are fully informed in all aspects of the battery business, including how they work and how to care for them.

By following this course of action, we are properly equipped to inform and guide our customers, which in turn helps them when they are speaking to their workshop customers and supplying them with the replacements they need.

With the advent of micro hybrids (vehicles fitted with a start-stop function), battery technology underwent a significant transformation with the traditional starter, lights and ignition (SLI) battery – that was the staple fitment for vehicle manufacturers for decades – taking a back seat in favour of first, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM), then Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB).

The shift in the aftermarket was somewhat slower, as demand for SLI batteries remained very strong well into the micro hybrid era. This was in no small part because many motorists simply turned the start-stop function off, which meant that the AGM/EFB batteries fitted to their vehicles were not making anywhere near the number of engine starts they were

designed for, so they just kept on going; however, this anomaly is now much less common, so sales of AGM and EFB batteries make up an increasingly large segment of the market and it’s these batteries that we really want to help our customers understand.

As now, more than ever, the performance of the battery is a key factor for the correct function of many of a vehicle’s systems; assessing its condition is a best practice principle that should be adopted by every workshop, and factors are a vital link in the chain to get this message across.

It is important to note, however, that there is a distinction in the way this assessment should be made, depending on the type of battery being tested. A conventional SLI battery in a vehicle with a traditional system only requires equipment to measure its state of charge (SOC), whereas to check AGM/EFB batteries, technicians require a device that also tests the battery’s state of health (SOH).

While the SOC can be simply determined with a voltage measurement, to make a reliable statement about the SOH

requires a complex test procedure, which among other things, considers the cold start power (CCA), the residual capacity (Ah) and the charge acceptance (CA).

Importance of battery validation tool

When fitting a replacement AGM/EFB battery in a start-stop equipped vehicle, another important consideration that factors need to highlight, is the need for technicians to use a battery validation tool, such as Ecobat Battery’s EBT 420, to ensure the new battery is correctly assimilated into the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS).

This element is an important step that is often overlooked and means that even if the battery is of the appropriate technology and correct specification, incorrect validation will result in the wrong charge algorithms being applied to the new battery via the BMS, which will considerably reduce its service life, could lead to an unsuccessful warranty claim and result in an unhappy customer.

CTEK: ‘Be ready. Be charged.

Be smart.’

Vehicle charging specialist, CTEK, shares what advice motor factors can offer their non-trade customers when seeking help on batteries. They can help them gain a better understanding of a car battery, which, when combined with the regular use of a reliable battery charger, can ensure they enjoy a care-free journey.

Understand how the cold affects a car battery. Drivers need to be aware that it can take as much as two-and-ahalf times more power to start a cold engine. Also, a battery can lose as much as 35% in performance when temperatures hit freezing, and up to 50% if temperatures sink below that.

Look out for signs of a weak battery. If the battery isn’t sufficiently charged, the car will gradually turn off ‘non-essential’ functions to focus the remaining charge on keeping the engine turning, and drivers of cars with a start-stop function may find it failing to kick in. Drivers should look out for any signs of change, like the way the car starts, or the operation of the electrical system in general.

Check and charge. Ideally, drivers should check their batteries and use a battery charger to top it up before any cold weather takes hold. A smart battery charger, like the CTEK CS ONE, uses patented APTOTM ‘adaptive charging’ to check what type of battery the customer has – lead acid or lithium – and then establish how much charge is needed

to safely top it up. The CS ONE is designed to be as simple as possible for the customer to use; just plug the charger in, pop the two black clamps on either terminal, and the charger will do the rest.

For the last 20% of charge, the CS ONE gradually reduces the rate of charge, so there’s no danger of overload. It will then let the customer know when it’s finished, and when the battery has enough charge to start the car safely.

Are you getting enough? If drivers are nipping out on lots of short journeys, the alternator won’t have the time or capability to replace the 150-350A of battery power it takes just to start the car, causing gradual drain on the battery. Also, driving around will only ever charge the battery to 80% capacity so, to top it up to 100%, drivers will always need a battery charger.

On-board computers, heated seats, heated steering wheels, tracking devices, keyless entry and other technology also draw a lot of power from the battery, even when the vehicle is stationary, and an inactive car battery will lose 0.1V of energy every month. Even a small drop in charge can compromise the battery health –

causing sulphate crystals to build up, degrade the battery and reduce capacity – so it’s important to check the battery regularly and keep it fully charged.

Get into a regular maintenance regime. Charging a car battery at least once a month prolongs its life by up to three times, so investing in a charger like the CS ONE, with built-in functionality for both maintenance and troubleshooting, is a smart choice. It uses adaptive charging to measure the battery’s health, then delivers the right level of power to get it working at optimum capacity, with a built-in temperature sensor that automatically adjusts the output voltage for cold conditions.

Autoelectro aims to bolster distributor technical know-how Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick Hood, explains some of the ways a starter motor, fitted to a Ford Fiesta MK8 (2017-onwards), can burn out. This should help stockists when liaising with their workshop customers and improve their own knowledge of the system.

Excessive cranking

This will run down the battery, and the technician is likely to hear the engine turn over slower than normal. The effect of prolonged cranking causes the starter motor to burn out due to low speed/high current.

Autoelectro advises technicians to check for a loose or corroded connection and that there is no resistance in the main feed lead from the battery, check the earth points for signs of corrosion and ensure good contact from battery to chassis and chassis to engine block. What’s more, they should also check the battery condition by fully charging the battery, which should show 12.6V or above, before performing a ‘load test’ with the correct equipment – the battery should maintain 9.6V for at least 15 seconds.

Ongoing engine starting issues, such as leaking fuel injectors, faulty coil pack, fouled spark plugs and vapour lock, can put excess strain on the starter motor and, if not resolved, can lead to a complete failure of the starter motor.

Running on

The starter will continue to run or stay ‘in mesh’ while the engine is running, which will, generally, cause a whining noise and, if prolonged, a burning smell. This can be seen on a starter motor as a bluish discoloration of the armature shaft and pinion.

The usual cause for this is a sticking ignition switch or relay sending a constant feed to the starter motor. This must be resolved before running the vehicle, as it will cause permanent damage and, ultimately, failure of the starter motor.

Fitting issues

Certain starter motors come with locating dowels and guides, which should always be used when fitting a new unit. Not using dowels or guides may mean the unit won’t sit flush onto the bell housing, causing meshing issues and, ultimately, permanent damage to the starter and/or the flywheel.

DENSO is an original equipment (OE) supplier to VMs worldwide and also has a long-standing commitment to the aftermarket, where it supplies OE quality products that are designed and manufactured in the company’s own QS 9000 and ISO 9000 certified factories.

Few part numbers, large range coverage

The DENSO Twin Tip or TT spark plug was originally developed for VMs for OE applications in 2003, with the original Nickel TT introduced to the aftermarket in 2009; however, the range was boosted in 2015, when the company added its Iridium TT plugs, which feature the world’s smallest diameter iridium alloy centre electrode (0.4mm) and a platinum ground electrode of just 0.7mm diameter, which improves performance by up to 20% compared to conventional nickel spark plugs, as it allows the spark they generate to grow 360 degrees in all three dimensions.

In addition to emission reductions and increased fuel economy, Iridium TT plugs provide better cold starting performance, which is an important factor for motorists in the depth of winter. They also deliver an extended lifespan of up to 75,000 miles – more than three times that of a standard nickel plug, meaning they also make sense economically for owners looking to reduce their running costs, without jeopardising their vehicle’s reliability.

Additional benefits for both distributors and installers are that the entire Iridium TT range consists of only 19 part numbers and

just 10 of these account for 97% of the total range coverage, which means that neither party has to make huge stock commitments to effectively cater for the relevant vehicle parc.

Delivering OE quality solutions Today, the complete TT range is made up of 35 consolidated part numbers, 16 for Nickel TT and 19 for Iridium TT, which, together, cater for 83% of the European car parc. HELLA urges factors to remind customers of importance of correct fault diagnosis Although not seasonal products in themselves, other factors can contribute to ignition coil breakdown that are often due to the effect of worsening weather on associated components. In turn, this puts additional strain on the coil and causes it to fail. HELLA says it is the original equipment (OE) fitment for almost 130 million vehicles throughout Europe, so availability and quality are a given.

ven without any additional strain brought about by winter, ignition coils operate in a demanding working environment where they are subject to high electrical, mechanical, thermal and chemical stress, so they need to be manufactured to the strictest standards, using the highest quality materials to work perfectly and over a long period, the company said.

Insufficient output voltage or energy will cause misfiring and incomplete fuel combustion in the cylinder, which can increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and potentially, damage its catalytic converter.

Therefore, if a problem arises, irrespective of the type of ignition coil – single, dual or four-spark or contact/transistor controlled – factors must remind their workshop customers that the correct fault diagnosis is critical and basic principles for the right procedure to assess them must be followed (right).

During all testing work on the ignition system, faults established during tests with the oscilloscope are not necessarily faults caused by the electronic system: they can

NGK offers NTK Lambda sensor top-tip NGK manufactures and supplies a sizeable range of Lambda sensors to the aftermarket under the NTK brand name, and the company says there are good reasons why NTK Lambda sensors are a popular choice for vehicle manufacturers (VMs) around the world.

GK said the experience it has in supplying VMs worldwide allows it to offer exactly the right sensor for every vehicle application.

The company urged distributors to encourage workshops to always go with a bespoke OE-quality Lambda sensor. A ‘universal’ Lambda sensor is designed to cover as many applications as possible by splicing in the connector from the unit being replaced and while, in theory, this sounds like a good idea, in practice, the potential for a mismatch with the vehicle’s system or subsequent premature failure is high, NGK claimed.

NGK also told distributors to help educate workshops by ensuring they fit a new NTK Lambda sensor whenever they replace a vehicle’s catalytic convertor.

A worn or failed sensor can result in drastically reduced control of the fueling system, which could result in increased fuel consumption, uneven running, generally poor performance or failure of an MOT emission test, so replacement is good news for the customer, garage and distributor.

NGK recommends that the function of

the sensor is checked every 20,000 miles or annually. The emissions check, as part of the current MOT test, samples the exhaust gases to monitor the efficiency of the engine, exhaust system and engine control systems. The Lambda sensor is a vital part of this system, and its function is, therefore, influenced by many other components.

A malfunction of an associated part may directly affect the performance of a sensor, NGK reported. An oscilloscope and gas analyser are “more accurate ways of assessing sensor performance than relying on fault codes alone” and workshops “need to look for slow response times, output range and heater function”.

Contaminants from poor quality oils and fuel, which remain in the exhaust gases, can become deposited on the sensor element affecting its operation. Even coolant from a leaking head gasket can reach the element.

INJECTION RAIL BLANKING PLUGS When working on common-rail diesel fuel systems, it is important to avoid dirt getting into the fuel system, according to Laser Tools. It is important that the fuel rail is sealed off to prevent dirt ingress and allow individual injectors to be blanked off to allow further diagnostic tests.

The company’s new set of injection rail blanking plugs (part number 7668) is designed to let the technician seal off the injector ports on the rail, one by one, to assist in the diagnosis of fuel system pressure loss.

Twelve plugs are included in the set, in two sizes – M12 x 1.5mm and M14 x 1.5mm — and fit the most common-rail injection rail sizes.
